What it should have been In the Profile (SCDF) story on CPL (NS) Cheston James Ow in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue, there were a few incorrect points. Cheston started shooting when he was 13. He was in the National Youth Team from 2006 to 2008, and in 2008 he moved to the National Team. He was the silver medallist at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival held in 2009. old in the same bold visual style as blockbuster 300, this new instalment in the epic saga tells of Greek general Themistokles’ attempt to unite all of Greece against the colossal invading Persian army with mortal-turned-god Xerxes as their commander, and the Persian navy led by the vengeful Artemisia. The original title of the movie was Xerxes , after the recent Frank Miller graphic novel that it is based on.

Packed with epic fights on both land and (completely CGI) water, this sequel is set to provide you with a week’s worth of movie testosterone. Casino Royale beauty Eva Green takes control of things as the badass leader of the Persian navy and it’s a sight to behold. Just watch the trailers!

ADVERTORIAL A big name in two-stroke technology, Motul’s expertise in the GP500 motorcycle series has helped it develop lubricants specially for go-kart engines

Lube it for

performance Motul draws on its MotoGP experience to develop top lubricants for racing karts

G

o-karting is an exhilarating sport that has launched the careers of many F1 drivers – Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton first earned their stripes as karting champions. Such a demanding sport naturally puts plenty of stress on go-kart engines. For the moving parts to operate safely and maintain mechanical longevity, the use of the right lubricant is crucial. With more than 160 years of expertise in synthetic lubricants, and a range of products covering more than 300 applications, Motul is a leader in developing products for kart engines. Dr Katsuya Arai (inset), Chief Technology Officer of Motul Asia Pacific, explains how it’s done.

1. What are the key challenges in developing dedicated lubricants for go-karts?

Two-stroke kart engines face two big challenges – stress on parts and lubrication due to high engine revolutions (almost 20,000rpm) to deliver high performance, and the high temperature due to the engine being located behind the seat with less airflow.

2. Motul has gained a strong reputation with technology for two-stroke engines. How does Motul leverage on its expertise of developing 2T oil for MotoGP machines to developing products for other applications? Being a part of MotoGP, formerly GP500, when twostroke bikes were still the norm, has allowed Motul to understand which parts of a circuit put the most stress on the engine, and which parts of the engine are most

reliant on lubrication. We put this understanding to good use when we formulate products for other racing applications.

3. The Motul Kart Grand Prix 2T lubricant has gained a strong following in the go-kart community worldwide. What is the secret of the formulation? The secret lies with our knowledge from racing, and our expertise in putting this knowledge to good use. First, through racing with twostrokers in MotoGP, we understand the properties and performance levels required to produce a winning product. Then, we apply this knowledge by selecting the right esters and chemical compounds when we develop our Motul Kart Grand Prix 2T.

All you need to know to go fast and furious in a go-kart any years ago, Kallang Stadium was also home to a different kind of “Kallang Roar” – the rumble of go-karts racing in the old carpark. Those days may be gone, but the sport is still very much alive. “Karting is auto racing at its rawest,” says Mark Lange, 39, a motor sports enthusiast. A kart is a simple but sturdy four-wheeled vehicle with a low centre of gravity, built on a metal frame and powered by a small engine. Commercial rental karts usually provide around 5–8 horsepower and have a top speed of 24km/h, while

Even if you get your own kart later, the initial investment of equipment and subsequent maintenance costs, such as servicing the engine and replacing tyres, are much cheaper than that of a race car.” Track time on rental karts (also known as fun karts) are usually sold in blocks of 10-minute intervals. Virtual Vroom Take on the road anytime – in an auto simulator

f you’re keen to go racing, but have no time to hit the race track, sim (simulated) racing could be just the thing for you. In sim racing, you drive in a virtual environment where you get to choose your vehicle, the race track and weather conditions. To get started, you’ll need a set of steering wheel and pedals – from as low as $250 – which you’ll need to plug in to a computer with a broadband connection. You’ll also need to subscribe to a racing simulation service such as iRacing.com, which was voted “No.1 Racing Game of All Time” by PC Gamer. For less than $20 a month you can race online with drivers from all over the world. It’s like the auto counterpart of World of Warcraft, but instead of fantasy every effort has been made to ensure the racing experience is as realistic as possible. Be it NASCAR, the FIA GT Series or Formula One racing, iRacing.com has it all. iRacing works with major car companies and race car constructors to build digital recreations of vehicles using accurate scans and performance data to work with its sophisticated physics engine. Even the race tracks are digital replicas of real tracks mapped to millimetre precision with laser scanning technology.

I

6 frontline / MAR–APR 2014

You’ll need to know how to handle a real car in order to perform well in sim racing – for example, how to brake correctly, turn without losing speed and monitor fuel usage. This is what separates sim racing from arcade driving games. It’s probably no surprise

that many professional drivers use the simulation as a training tool. For an even more realistic experience, you can invest in additional screens for a panoramic view plus a motion rig with two or four actuators, which allows you to literally feel the simulated G-forces and the bumps on the road. Such a setup will set you back by at least around $8,000, but you’ll get to experience every knock of the race. Now that’s really as close as you can get to the real thing!

open-hearted and forgiving, as we move towards a global society. London is a very inspiring environment. There’s a lot of focus on the arts, culture and heritage, and there’s a lot of art shows, films and theatre. London is a city with so many talented individuals, and it is always very humbling and keeps me grounded. Cooking is my other big passion. I make good roast beef and I bake good scones. I dare say my scones are one of the best in the world – haha! I’m a real sucker for cooking shows. I follow Jamie Oliver, Raymond Blanc, Gordon Ramsey and many other chefs. I take their recipes and improvise on them. So if I stop making films, I might train to become a chef.

I am still promoting Ilo Ilo a lot in 2014 as the film opens in UK, US, Korea and China this year. So I’m looking forward to my ICT, but I hope I won’t have to defer it again! I missed our local food when I was away from home during the film festivals. I love cooking and eating, and can whip up a decent chicken rice or curry chicken whilst away in London. I also missed the Singaporean language when I was in London. The mix of different languages and dialects is just so unique. You can really identify a Singaporean from the lor and lah. What I don’t really like about Singapore is that Singaporeans sometimes tend to be insular and have the village mentality. People can be quite territorial and unforgiving. Maybe the next step is to be more

uring my full-time NS days in Public Affairs Department, HQ SCDF, I wrote articles and did interviews for the in-house publication Rescue 995. I also handled the liaison for foreign delegates – I helped my officers to plan the itineraries, handle their hotel and restaurant bookings, and pick them up and send them off at the airport. So I got to know Changi Airport inside out. It was a good two years and I learnt a lot. I deferred my ICT twice last year because I had to be in the film festivals for Ilo Ilo. The officers in charge were supportive and made arrangements for my deferments. With Ilo Ilo gaining so much limelight and becoming a subject of national pride, I reckon this year’s ICT will be an interesting one to look forward to as Ilo Ilo would probably be a topic of discussion with my ICT mates.

It really is a privilege to serve NS as a Police Officer, as police work actually applies to so many areas of our lives. I served my full-time NS as a Staff Officer (Manpower) in Tanglin Police Division (‘E’ Div). There I planned manpower deployments for operations such as raids on entertainment spots that did not comply with regulations, and dwellings that harboured illegal immigrants. bookmakers. Little did I know that the industry I was indirectly safeguarding turned out to be my lifelong career. I love horses because they are such magnificent animals. I joined the Singapore Turf Club because I was thrilled at the thought of being with horses and being in the exciting industry of horse racing.

As I learnt more about the trade, I decided I wanted to get more handson with them, and so in 2007 I set up my own horse stables in Bukit Timah. There was an outbreak of equine influenza in 2007, the year I started this business. Horse imports into Singapore were banned and it hit me hard. My stables were running at just 10% occupancy. At the same time, I got many unsolicited job offers from overseas in the same industry. It was tempting to just give up and go back to a stable career, but pride and family support helped me carry on. I’ve not looked back since. Horses need a break, just like we need a holiday. So said champion racehorse trainer Laurie Laxon on why he sends his racehorses to the Equine Sanctuary. Pace yourself and plan time to relax, so that you can really go the distance.

They also brainstormed on how extra aid could be given to the NSmen in their units to achieve better IPPT results, and which aspects they could improve on to achieve the Best SCDF NS Unit Awards. While the dialogue was an annual affair, it was the first time that the Public Shelter Unit Commanders joined in the session to share their views on how they could better contribute in their role. The feedback and suggestions gathered were

Here’s a toast to better perks and facilities in the Year of the Horse

Management Committee member, LTC Lee Bee Hong (left), with Asst. General Secretary of HomeTeamNS, LTC Lee Yam Ming are all smiles as they usher in the New Year

he Year of the Horse is set to be an exciting one for HomeTeamNS. With upcoming revamped facilities and greater perks and privileges, there’s plenty for members to look forward to! On 11 February, the management and staff of HomeTeamNS had a Lunar New Year gathering at the HomeTeamNS-JOM Clubhouse. Gracing the event was Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State (Ministry of Home Affairs & Foreign Affairs) and President of HomeTeamNS. Also present was SPF Commissioner Ng Joo Hee, Vice-President of HomeTeamNS. Mr Masagos presented everyone with mandarin oranges and red packets for good fortune. It was a delightful night with an energetic lou-hei session and hearty talk over dinner. HomeTeamNS would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their strong support!

part from recognising the contributions of our SPF and SCDF NSmen, HomeTeamNS also values the sacrifices made by their families. One way to acknowledge their sacrifices is to help them with their children’s education through our annual Children’s Education and Achievement Awards. These awards aim to encourage the children of HomeTeamNS Ordinary members to achieve excellent academic results and participate in cocurricular activities and community involvement programmes. The award amounts, which range from $300 to $1,000, help to reduce the financial burden of the parents. The HomeTeamNS Children’s Education and Achievement Award Ceremony was held at Shaw Lido Theatre on 27 December 2013 and graced by Mr Eric Yap, Commissioner SCDF. A total of $140,450 was disbursed to 279 children.
