HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, SINGAPORE!

HomeTeamNS celebrates Singapore’s Golden Jubilee with contests exclusively for members

I

n celebration of the nation’s 50th birthday, HomeTeamNS held contests for members to win a pair of tickets to attend the National Day Parade (NDP) at The Float@Marina Bay. A total of five contests were held at the different clubhouses in July. SG50 Wishes was one of the five initiatives to encourage members to pen down their birthday messages at our clubhouses. The contest garnered many wishes from staff, members, NSmen and

their families. The other contests include SG50 Selfie and SG50 ‘I’m so Lucky’ Dip. Said Mr Tony Ee, who won the pair of NDP tickets: “This win was unexpected. I feel excited winning the tickets as I wanted to witness the celebration of Singapore’s Jubilee year. This is one of the many privileges of being a HomeTeamNS member, and I feel appreciated as one.” HomeTeamNS would like to wish Singapore a Happy 50th Birthday!

KAMPUNG SPIRIT? GAME ON! Our NSman volunteers celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with traditional games

T

The annual event to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri just got a blast from the past. About 50 NSman volunteers from various committees and HomeTeamNS staff gathered at the Balestier Clubhouse on 5 August to play fun childhood games such as chapteh, congkak and five stones, and enjoy traditional delicacies. Mr Eric Yap, Vice-President of HomeTeamNS, challenged some SPF and SCDF NSmen in chapteh, and SUPT (NS) Edwin Ang emerged the winner when he juggled the shuttlecock 27 times without dropping it. “It was such an enjoyable evening. Everyone had fun playing the traditional games. This reminded me of the good old days when we enjoyed the simple

things in life, like the games we played – no such things as smartphones and computer games,” said CPT (NS) Hisham Hasim. The games of congkak and five stones also tested the volunteers’ mettle and abilities. Said MAJ (NS) Jason Chua: “I’m the goalkeeper in my football team, but trying to play five stones was such a challenge, as I kept missing one of the bean bags.” “Our NSman volunteers had been very supportive, and worked very hard to ensure that some of the new initiatives by the Association remain relevant to the NSmen’s needs. This is just one of the things we do to thank and recognise their efforts for supporting us throughout the transformation journey,” said Ms Agnes Eu, Chief Executive of HomeTeamNS. FRONTLINE 3

FRONTLINE pays tribute to two veteran Home Team officers who had served in their respective units for over 30 years

H

ome is where the heart is. This could not be more true for SSG (Ret.) Abdul Rahim Bin Mohd Taib, 65, who lived in Alexandra Fire Station with his family from 1977 to 1984. The veteran firefighter, who hailed from St John’s Island, was inspired by a fellow villager who left for the mainland to join the Singapore Fire Brigade. “When I signed on in 1968 at the age of 18, I served under a British fire chief,” said SSG (Ret.) Abdul Rahim. “Over the years, I had served in the Singapore Fire Brigade, which later became the Singapore Fire Service, and then the SCDF.” 4

SSG (Ret.) Abdul Rahim had responded to many landmark incidents, including the fire at Robinson’s in 1972, the collapse of the Lian Yak building (commonly known as Hotel New World) in 1986, and the refinery fire at Pulau Merlimau in 1988. “I could feel the heat well before I reached Pulau Merlimau,” he said, before adding that he only had a fire jacket for protection at Singapore’s largest-ever oil refinery fire. “We did not have a full set of firefighting gear then, only a fire jacket each to protect ourselves. It took us three days to put out the inferno.” Through his long years of service - he retired from SCDF in 2005 after 37 years of service - he had seen many changes. “Back then, we had to stand on the fire engine when we made our way to an incident site, and we had to scrub and dry our canvas hoses after using them. We also used canvas jumping sheets to catch people who wanted to jump off buildings! Now the ride to an incident site is more

comfortable, our synthetic hoses no longer need cleaning after every use, and we use an inflatable safety life air pack for jumpers. While the equipment is definitely better now, I must say that our firemen, past and present, are still as brave and committed to the lifesaving mission.” As a firefighter serving at the Alexandra Fire Station, SSG (Ret.) Abdul Rahim lived in the station’s living quarters with his wife and two sons. His elder son, SSG Shahrul Rizal, 38, is now a firebiker at the Alexandra Fire Station. “It is one big family living here in the station,” said SSG Shahrul. “I play with the children of the firefighters, and was exposed to firefighting equipment at a young age. I would have lunch with my dad and watch him get ready to respond to incidents. I lived there until I entered primary school.” SSG (Ret.) Abdul Rahim still visits the station every now and then. The living quarters behind the station may be no more, but the spirit to keep Singapore safe and secure lives on in his son.

KEEPING US SAFE

W

hen DSP (NS) Neo Son Chai saw that a PNSman on sentry duty was not careful in checking visitors to Bedok Police Division HQ, he pulled him aside and asked him: “Do you know who is the most important person in this place right now?” “The OC?” “No.” “The commander?” “No.” “So who is it?” “It’s you. You are more than just a sentry – you are the face of SPF, and you represent the rule of law in Singapore. Your job is important, and so are all our NSmen. So do your job right, and do it for the right reason.” This was just one of the many lessons in managing people that DSP (NS) Neo, 66, shared in an interview with FRONTLINE. The veteran policeman, who was a SPF regular from 1969 to 1981, first served as a PNSman, and gradually rose through the ranks from OC of a Multi-Task Group to NS Head Ops of Bedok Division, and finally NS Contingent Commander of Bedok Division. “In the late 1990s, I deployed officers to HDB blocks in the day for crime prevention and deterrence, and in the night to guard against housebreaking,” said DSP (NS) Neo, who has held senior management positions in auxiliary security companies. “Back then, most housebreaking incidents occurred between 2am and 5am, so we always made sure our officers were at their most alert then.” He had his way of keeping his men’s morale high. “A little reward such as

a post-patrol drink or a snack always helped,” he said with a smile. Although the duties assumed by NSmen – such as patrols and crowd control at events – tend to be less glamorous in nature, they are more important than most people realise. “It is the day-to-day patrols that help keep the crime rate down, more so than raids or special operations,” he said. “When your officers can appreciate the reason for doing what they do, you can be sure they

will go all out to do their job well.” DSP (NS) Neo has put his vast experience in security to good use. He has set up security firms in Dubai, where he worked for five years, and last year founded EJ Security Pte Ltd, which specialises in providing unarmed protection officers for various clients. Now a grandfather, he spends his time caring for his grandson with his wife – also a former police officer – and volunteers as a counsellor in Changi Prison. FRONTLINE 5

CUSTOMISE YOUR FITNESS

With the new partnership with Home United Football Club, members can now improve their fitness at affordable rates

O

n 22 June 2015, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between HomeTeamNS and Home United Football Club (HUFC) to develop the fitness of HomeTeamNS members via programmes that aim to meet their needs based on their body type and weight. Backed by medical research, these programmes include the Optizone Fitness Assessment and the Training and Functional Movement Screening. The former measures a person’s metabolism via a simple test and comes up with the best way to lose body fat, while the latter evaluates a person’s functional

movement patterns and musculoskeletal deficiencies to prevent injuries and enhance fitness training. “We conduct the metabolism test on a treadmill or bike – an equipment the participant is familiar with and often uses. This allows us to customise the training at a suitable fitness level for him, as it’s based on the results he wants to achieve,” says Dr Magdalena Schauenberg, a performance consultant at HUFC. Nelson Chua, 26, a NSman with the Singapore Police Force, signed up for the Train and Pass programme and lost six kilos over 12 weeks. “Back in the Home Team Academy, all NSmen are trained

at the same level. The programme now gives us different training schedules, and the speed of training and the weights are adjusted to each individual.” Interested in these fitness programmes? HomeTeamNS has a special place in the heart of Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah, who is the new face of our membership card

D

ealing with newfound fame can be daunting for many young starlets. But for Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah, it was something he learnt to take in stride, along with the media attention and hordes of new fans. It was in the midst of serving his national service as a PNSman that SC/CPL Batisah found himself on the winner’s podium at the end of a gruelling Singapore Idol competition, capturing the hearts of many Singaporeans and propelling him into the limelight. Not one to shirk his duties, the NPCO was back on the ground with his team after his win. That’s when he realised the full extent of his new fame. “I had to attend to a case shortly after winning the Singapore Idol, and it was chaos. Members of public recognised me and began to shout my name over and over again while I was trying to deal with the incident,” he said, with a laugh. A decade later, the singer is an established face in Asia’s music industry. And now, he’s lending his stardom to HomeTeamNS – as the ambassador for the all-new membership card. “The new card is really amazing,” he said. “It has everything inside, with all the perks and privileges!”

serve only two years! For those who think that it is long, you will realise that it will be done before you know it,” he said. His advice to current NSmen? “Make a lot of new friends! You never know who you might need to work with one day,” he said.

Membership Perks

Being an NSman

When asked how he felt about returning to assist HomeTeamNS in publicising the membership card, Taufik cited his memorable experiences as a PNSman as the main reason. “National service is a great way to build your character. No matter what posting you get, absorb as much as you can, and use it to grow and build your character,” he advised. With national service now taking two years to complete instead of two and a half years back in his time, Taufik has this to say to national servicemen who are currently serving the nation. “NSmen are so lucky now, having to

As a HomeTeamNS member for more than a decade, Taufik has many fond memories of the clubhouses, especially the Bukit Batok clubhouse where he frequents the gym and the pool. His most memorable moment at the clubhouse dated back to 2005. “That year, after being crowned the Singapore Idol, one of my first gigs was at the Bukit Batok clubhouse for a major event. The thing that made it so special was that I got to perform in front of our ex-President S. R. Nathan, and also to meet him personally!” he recalled excitedly. Now, it has all come a full circle as he graces the cover of FRONTLINE to spread the word about HomeTeamNS’ new membership card. “I feel so honoured to be the new ambassador of this membership card, and I know every HomeTeamNS member will benefit greatly from it!” FRONTLINE 11

TOGETHER AS ONE

The 28th SEA Games, held from 5 to 16 June, gave Singapore and its athletes a chance to shine. And they did so in incredible fashion: the Republic won 84 gold, 73 silver and 102 bronze medals – a record haul. FRONTLINE talks to four dedicated men from Home Team who have helped make the Games a triumph for Singapore and local sports.

Honouring the True Spirit of the Games

2015 SEA Games International Technical Official, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police, (DAC NS) CO KINS ‘A’ Senior Lecturer, Physical Education & Sports Science (PESS) Academic Group, National Institute of Education (NIE), NTU

You officiated the Rugby sevens at the SEA Games. How long have you been an official and referee? I picked up rugby refereeing in 1996, and officiated my first international tournament in 2000. I’ve been in the Asian Top Referees’ panel since 2004, and have officiated in the finals of the Asian World Cup Qualifier, the World Games, and the World Sevens Series, among others. It’s great to be a referee at the recent SEA Games. Being involved in a multi-sports games in your home country is always special. What is it like to represent Singapore as a referee on the world stage? One needs to possess a high level of fitness and a knowledge of the sport’s laws and their application. My involvement in rugby started in secondary school as a player, and later when I represented the school team, the national age-group team, and finally Singapore. Having played the game at such level before picking up refereeing has given me an edge in terms of understanding the sport and anticipating the players’ actions, to name a few. Even so, there are specific refereeing skills that can only be acquired through refereeing numerous

games, analysing your own performance, and getting coaching advice. What kind of training did you go through for the Games? Rugby refereeing requires one to be close to the action, hence the need to be just as fit as the players. Leading up to the SEA Games, I have had to put in many training hours and work on my aerobic fitness, speed and agility. To be accurate and sharp, I had refereed at a few warm-up games and tournaments. How did SPF help and influence your success as a referee? Being in SPF and taking on various responsibilities have taught me much about discipline and managing people. I’ve applied that discipline to my training programme and diet. The people management skills have helped me manage players on the field. The discipline and skills are transferable to other aspects of my life, which have helped make me a better person, citizen, husband and father.

In front of 4,000 athletes and millions watching on TV, DAC (NS) Mohammed Azhar Bin Yusof recited the Athlete’s Oath to affirm the dedication by all participants to honour the codes of sportsmanship and competition. facilities, to help me train. That said, time is always a constraint. To maintain my fitness and be involved in international tournaments along with juggling my NS duties, work and family is a big challenge. I’m fortunate to have an understanding boss and family. My wife and two kids have been supportive of my involvement as a NS man and also as an international rugby referee.

How about the support from your colleagues and family? As a senior lecturer at PESS/NIE, I’ve the advantage with my knowledge of exercise and sports science, and access to training FRONTLINE 21

Motivated to Win

Muhammad Baqir Bin Asali, 23

2015 SEA Games Silver Medallist, Hockey Full-time NS Personnel with Operations Branch, 2nd SCDF Division HQ

Hockey may not be as popular as other sports, but you’ve been doing it for 13 years. What’s the journey been like? I was 10 when I got interested in this sport. My interest in hockey grew when I was chosen for the school team, and later when I got into the youth development team at 11. I’ve been training ever since. And then I made the senior men’s squad and played at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Did your commitment to the sport jibe with your duties as NSF? I had to attend training sessions five times a week after my full-time NSF duties. It wasn’t easy to juggle between the two, but my peers and officers showed their support in every possible way, enabling me to overcome the obstacles to prepare for the Games. I am also thankful to my friends and family. I was very proud to be given the 22

opportunity to represent Singapore in the Games, and also to serve my NS in SCDF. What about your hockey teammates – how did you bond and helped make the SEA Games experience better for one another? We considered ourselves a young squad, pitting ourselves against players who are bigger, stronger and faster. Being one of the older players in the team, and hence one of the leaders, I’ve learnt to shoulder responsibility. I saw to it that the juniors kept their cool during our matches at the Games. I felt that we had to be confident, and to show determination and resolve during

the competition as we were facing very strong teams. Good leadership is key, and my seniors are good leaders on and off the field. It played a huge part in us making it to the finals. We also had many meetings and watched motivational films for inspiration. Were the Games everything you expected it to be? The road to the finals was not easy. We didn’t fare as well in our first match with Myanmar, but it only spurred us on to do much better and win against Thailand. I feel very proud and happy about winning silver for Singapore. It’s been a long time since we had this kind of results.

PHOTO GETTYIMAGES

Can you tell us a bit about hockey? Unlike ice hockey, ours is done on a football-sized artificial turf. Using the foreside of the stick, you score a goal by entering a scoring circle that looks like a D. There’s 70 minutes of play.

Tough & Disciplined

Nadzrie Hyckell Bin Hamzah, 22

2015 SEA Games Silver Medallist, Lightweight Men’s Coxless Four (1000m) Completed Full-time NS as Section Commander, Banyan Fire Station

What are some of your firsts as an athlete at the SEA Games? I’ve been rowing for five years. This is the first Games I’ve been to where I was able to attend the opening ceremony, as the rowing competition usually takes place during the opening day of the Games. Do you think the event shed more light on your sport, as well as Singapore athletes? Yes, definitely. With the SEA Games being held in Singapore, it got quite a lot of support from everyone. I liked how the organisers managed to get people of different backgrounds and ages to get involved in the Games. Also, local athletes got to showcase their hard work in front of their family, friends and fellow countrymen. What kind of training regime did you go through? I tried as much as possible to cycle to work, which takes 45 minutes. I would also go to the gym for weights and a cardio session of 60 to 90 minutes on the bike. On my off-days, I would cycle for about 45 minutes and train on water in the afternoon. During the last six weeks leading up to the Games, I was fortunate

enough to be able to train full-time. I was training 12 times a week, twice every day with Monday being a rest day.

hold nothing back in their training, and that they would put their trust and belief in me to lead them to victory.

How did serving NS with SCDF help? The training SCDF has provided me has made me tougher; as an Emergency Response Specialist, you need to be physically fit and mentally alert at all times. It has made me a more disciplined person and it’s a huge honour to be representing Singapore. My job also taught me to be caring to the community and to give back as much as I can.

Any advice from your colleagues? The support I’ve received from my colleagues in SCDF was a big contribution to my success at the Games. They’ve seen me through the training sessions, and many of them consistently reminded me to work towards my goal, and to always keep a positive outlook no matter how challenging and demanding the preparation was for the Games.

What lessons have you garnered from the SEA Games? I learnt that you must always have faith in your coach and team mates in order to succeed. I trusted my coach’s approach to training and preparation for the Games. I believed my teammates would

Finally, is there one thing about rowing that you’d like people to know more about? Contrary to popular belief, rowing is not dragon boating or canoeing. FRONTLINE 23

Keeping the Games Safe and Secure

Darric Teo Chai Jing, 43

As NS Commanding Officer for the recent SEA Games, when did you start preparing for the event? We started training and preparing on 7 May, a month before the actual event. Did your participation change your usual routine? Day or night, workday or weekend, the SPF operates round the clock, 24/7, same for PNS and KINS. Our families are conditioned to this fact, but we do hope the public can recognise this too. SEA Games or otherwise, we have committed officers who will rise up to the occasion, any time and every time. In what other ways has your background in SPF changed you? Having the privilege of doing investigative duties in my early NS career had instilled the values of focusing on the tasks at hand, analysing facts and exploring options. These have made me versatile, nimble and ready for action, and also helped in my career as a businessman since they are interconnected and complementary. 24

Any lessons from the SEA Games? While contingencies were well in place as part of the operational SOP, a mindset change is necessary to address any eventuality. Complacency is a dangerous adversary, and we must guard against it. We had foreign guests who praised Singapore for being a safe haven, and it’s important not to take the safety and harmony for granted. The sacrifices from our officers made this possible.

Any inspiration during the Games? Azhar Yusof, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police who swore during the opening ceremony that the Games will be carried out with thorough sportsmanship. Plus, I also witnessed our talented and determined athletes performing at their very best. Truly, sportsmanship, respect and camaraderie were celebrated and displayed in glory during the Games.

Behind the scenes: Other NSmen who have supported the Games shared their thoughts. “I believe that what I had learnt during the SEA Games will not only see me through my career, but also help me when I’m serving my ICT.”

WORDS ASP HUANG HUIWEN, VOLUNTEER SPECIAL CONSTABULARY (VSC)

Unsung Guardians She certainly had the best job at the recent SEA Games, with the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a major event, according to Pauline Lim, one of the 310 Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) officers deployed at this year’s Games. The VSC officer was assigned by Singapore Police Force to be a photographer for the event. One memorable moment for Pauline was when she photographed Singapore Police Force athlete, Christabelle Lim, and her team mates from the Woman’s Rugby Sevens when they won a silver medal. “I can’t describe the feeling. When I managed to capture that moment, of these athletes who have made Singapore proud, I, too, feel very proud and happy!” When Pauline was not busy taking photos, she took on the operational duties to ensure security of the event. “During the closing ceremony, a member of the public tried to launch an unmanned aircraft. I spotted her in time and advised her not to operate it in view of the safety of the athletes, officials and fans. She complied,” she shared.

Due to the massive scale of the Games, the police and VSCs were called in to assist not only in the ushering but also maintain safety and security at the event. “Given the scale and duration of the Games, the manpower required was massive and SPF had to re-deploy officers across units and recall many NSmen. Luckily, we had the support of 310 VSC officers. I’m grateful for all those who had supported the event indirectly by staying behind in their respective units to support the daily operations,” said DAC Chua Chuan Seng, Commander VSC. Although the VSCs were excited about being involved in the Games, they had to sacrifice part of their family and work commitments to fulfil their duties. “Many put aside their family time during the June school holidays to help out, some even taking leave from work. Many also contributed by performing duties at their units so that their regular counterparts could be re-deployed. We appreciate their dedication that have enabled a very successful deployment for the SEA Games,” noted DAC Chua.

ABOUT VSC A vital part of the Singapore Police Force, the Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) comprises volunteers from all walks of life. They are trained to patrol the streets and participate in anticrime operations. These officers usually perform their duties after office hours or on weekends. They are also deployed with regular Police officers or with other volunteer peers, depending on the requirements. For more information on VSC, visit www.hometeamvolunteers. gov.sg or www.facebook. com/htvolunteers.

SAVE ME

Bet you didn’t know these fun lifeguard facts! Want to be a lifeguard? It’s not enough to be a strong swimmer. You also have to learn basic water safety, rescue techniques, CPR and first aid. And of course, it helps to be physically fit! Besides the physical ability and certifications, being a lifeguard also requires you to be responsible, meticulous and sociable, and to have excellent customer service and communication skills.

Did you know that the iconic red swimsuit seen on longrunning TV show Baywatch was modelled on the swimsuits worn by real-life California beach lifeguards? Contrary to popular belief, the lifeguards wore onepiece suits and not bikinis.

Just because lifeguards are trained to save lives doesn’t mean they do so all the time. Many lifeguards may work for years before they actually have to get someone out of the water. 40

WORDS SASHA GONZALES

Actors Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jack Nicholson all have one thing in common – before they became famous movie stars, they worked as lifeguards at their local pool or beach.
