MOTUL & MV AGUSTA A Global Partnership L
egendary motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta has signed a global partnership with leading lubricant company Motul. Rejuvenated in 2010 by the late Claudio Castiglioni, MV Agusta now makes state-ofthe-art machines, such as the new Brutale, F3 and radical F4. Its key ingredients are emotion, performance, speed and incomparable design. This partnership grants MV Agusta access to Motul’s extensive range of products, from the supply of industrial maintenance lubricants to a first-fill and service-fill. It also includes a joint venture in the Motul FIM World Superbike Championship with the MV Agusta Reparto Corse team. In WorldSBK, Léon Camier will receive the racing expertise that's brought Motul multiple world championship titles, while in the World Supersport category, Lorenzo Zanetti and Jules Cluzel will also benefit. Said Marco Baraldi, Motul Italy's General Manager: “We are delighted to announce
this new partnership with a brand as iconic, legendary and prestigious as MV Agusta. High quality and performance are our common denominators and we share a real passion for racing. We have no doubt this partnership will very quickly bear fruit both on track and through our distribution network.” Sharing his sentiments was Giovanni Castiglioni, MV Agusta President and CEO: “I do not consider this a simple business partnership with a leading brand in the lubricants industry, but a tribute to the fundamental ingredient in the process of manufacturing our motorbikes.” From the first round of the series at Phillip Island in Australia on 26–28 February, all MV Agusta 1000 F4 & MV Agusta F3 675 competition bikes have been using products from the Motul Factory Line range, especially the iconic 300V racing lubricants and Motul MC Care products.

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT I
love travelling by car. I have been organising convoy trips with friends since I was in my 20s. Getting outside of our urban environment to enjoy the roads and sceneries of new places, and, best of all, meeting new people are the things I like the most about driving holidays. As I’m very much involved in my work as the director of McWell Design, a furniture manufacturing and interior design company, I make an effort to achieve work-life balance by planning a driving adventure at least twice a year. I usually make these trips by convoy with friends and family, and our most frequent destinations are Johor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. One of my regular driving kakis is Mediacorp artist Henry Thia. We like to go shopping and visit our favourite eateries, and we may also explore new places. I also join autoventure groups like the HomeTeamNS Auto Adventure. My most recent trip was to Sekinchan, Selangor, in May; the convoy consisted of more than 10 people, led by chairman Edwin Ang. On that trip, my wife, then eight months pregnant, and our lovely little boy, who was 20 months old, joined me. 4
I often organise a convoy after I’ve been on an interesting trip on my own and wish to share the pleasant experience. After consulting with close friends, I’d plan the journey based on our knowledge of the place, such as its climate, food and local holidays. Three weeks before the departure date, I’d confirm the travel details with all parties. I’d also put in place assistance for the convoy car positions, medical backup, communication and welfare. While travelling, the ultimate concern is, of course, for everyone’s safety. Hence, the trip must be well planned and the respective roles and rules strictly observed by all members so that unnecessary trouble is avoided. Occasionally, someone inevitably loses his way, and we’d guide him or her back to the convoy belt, or in the worst-case scenario, to the final destination. Overall, we’re lucky not to have encountered any major bad incidents so far. Once, someone placed nails under one of my car tyres during our rest stop. Fortunately, we were back in Singapore before we noticed that the tyre was becoming flat. I think the most essential items on longdistance driving trips are food, a medical
box and breakdown tools. I also make sure the car first goes for basic maintenance servicing, or – at the very least – I’d check that the engine oil, water tank, tyre tracks, wipers, light fittings and other parts are in good condition. I currently drive an F10 BMW 520i. I have owned about eight cars, including a Lexus RX300 and Mercedes Benz E280, but I fell in love with my Bimmer because it has high torque and is powerful and roadworthy, and yet is easy to handle and feels so comfortable. As I’m a frequent traveller to Malaysia, I also have a prepaid telcom card that allows me to make calls and to activate data roaming. I also have a Singapore cash card and a Malaysia Touch-n-Go card, with sufficient cash value. There’s an extremely useful app called Waze, which can help track other drivers along the convoy belt. To help the kids cope with the longdistance travel, I’d try to ensure that they have adequate rest and proper amounts of food during their usual mealtimes. Bringing their favourite snacks and toys along helps too. Of course, I’d make sure child-safety accessories are secured properly, and plan for short breaks every hour or so.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED Two-time first-place winner of The New Paper SUVival Challenge SC (NS) Suhaimi Badri tells us more about all-terrain off-road driving
We hear that you’re very experienced in and enthusiastic about organising off-road driving trips. Please tell us more. Yes, together with family, friends and the members of our 4X4 group, I have been on so many 4X4 trips. Some of these places are Kota Tinggi, Selai and Bekok in Johor; Dubai and Janda Baik in Pahang; and Lubuk Kawah in Perak. Sometimes, in addition to the driving, we also do freshwater river fishing and waterfall abseiling – of course, with a certified instructor. The terrains we encounter vary from level 5 (most challenging) to level 2. Level 2 is considered a ‘playground’ even for SUVs with only two-wheel drive capability, so it’s not just the 4X4 SUVs that can enjoy these driving adventures. I do recommend building in a minimum set of safety features, however, which means that skid plates and all-terrain tyres are compulsory for a better grip across mud and for river crossing. 6
INTERVIEW LLEWELLYN LOW
What’s the most challenging drive you’ve done? The most challenging off-road trip I’ve taken so far is the one-of-its-kind exploration in Lubuk Kawah, Perak. That’s been the proudest accomplishment for me. Lubuk Kawak is sometimes called the ‘Graveyard’ because it has very challenging terrain. The cars belonging to my partner Ranjit Panu and me – both Toyota Fortuners – were, I believe, the first two Singapore cars to reach the top of the hill. I’ve also gone on a four-night drive-through, with four other cars: from Singapore, we drove to Penang, Krabi, Hat Yai and Kuala Lumpur, and then returned back to Singapore. What a friend, Desmond Lee, and I really hope to do now is enter the Rainforest Challenge, which is one of the ten toughest races in the world. Coming up in October this year, before the monsoon season kicks in, we’ll be going on our furthest exploration thus far, to the Royal Belom forest in Kedah. This will be a four-night expedition that
will include driving, camping, hiking and fishing! I really look forward to that.
Which type of 4X4 vehicle is the most popular or common in Singapore? There are limited SUVs in Singapore with a 4X4 capability. We usually see the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Fortuner and Daihatsu Terios, and occasionally we also have the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender. Interestingly, one of my friends, Jerrick Lim, has a Kia Soul. That’s really weird, because it’s a normal sedan and often seen on our roads. After buying it brand new, Jerrick took it straight to the workshop and ‘alienified’ it, so it now looks like an SUV with huge tyres! I dare say it’s the only converted Kia Soul in Singapore, if not in Asia.
that comes with driving off-road, and it definitely has the ‘cool factor’ with its open top – and possibly I’d drive it without the doors too. I’d just take along a wrench tool and dump the doors onto the back seat. There’s also plenty of accessories available for the JW.
Will you be watching the F1? Oh yes, I’d definitely love to. I’m currently planning on showing up together with my family and friends. I’ve been going to watch the F1 yearly since 2012, and I wouldn’t want to miss it this year!
What’s your fave off-roader? The Jeep Wrangler. I’ve owned it before and I’d definitely love to get on it again. It is robust and can take the beating

FOOTIE FEVER HITS HOME SPF ‘E’ Division crowned champions for the third time in the HomeTeamNS Futsal 5 Tournament

ark clouds loomed over the Home Youth Football Academy, but that did not dampen the spirits of the 15 teams participating in the annual HomeTeamNS Futsal 5 Tournament. Graced by Guest-of-Honour A.C. Manimaran Pushpanathan, General Secretary of HomeTeamNS, the event was held on 4 June and attended by over 100 NSmen from SPF and SCDF. Despite the drizzle, the players dazzled with flashy stepovers, cheeky nutmegs and wonderful goals that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Eventually, it came down to a showdown between SPF ‘E’ Division and SCDF 3rd Division. With their quick passes, counterattacks and pride on the line, SPF ‘E’ Division successfully defended their title! The team has held the title as the defending champion for three consecutive years. CPL (NS) Shamsurin from SPF ‘E’ division said, “We organise friendly matches every weekend, and we won because we have a strong bond, which we developed by playing together and defending each other. We are stronger as a team.”
INSP (NS) Haiqal from SPF ‘G’ Division said, “We are all from different Neighbourhood Police Centres, so we did not really know each other before today. It has been fun getting to know all the seniors and juniors – it’s been a true bonding experience for our unit.”

Nathaniel Tay, 31, a Community Engagement (CE) officer in the Singapore Police Force said, “I feel that engaging the residents is an important role as we are equipping them with the relevant skills to be better prepared during a crisis.” Justin Ong, 21, a full-time NS officer
with the SCDF 1st Division Public Affairs Branch, said, “I think it is a very meaningful posting: it allows me to show the public how to get trained in fire safety and have basic first-aid and CPR training.”

Enforcing the Speed of Life

W
hile many of us are sound asleep, a group of Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC) and regular officers from the Traffic Police come together to conduct routine island-wide traffic police operations. These operations are held several times a year. The main purpose is to take enforcement against errant motorists, and at the same time engage and educate the motoring community about the risks of speeding and danger of drink-driving. “These road-safety operations are usually held at night because the traffic conditions are less congested. We also see a higher percentage of motorists letting their guard down and driving more recklessly at night,” explained INSP (V) Eric Soh. The 46-year-old engineer joined the VSC in 1999 to fulfil a childhood ambition.

“I’ve always thought the Traffic Police look really cool on the bike, and I could do my part to make our roads safer.” Over the past 17 years, INSP (V) Soh has witnessed many errant drivers during these operations. “Especially on the weekends, many partygoers underestimate the influence of alcohol and insist on driving themselves or their friends home after a few drinks. This is actually very dangerous and will put other road users at risk,” cautioned INSP (V) Soh. “Some drivers will try their luck to see if they are able to escape the roadblock by bluffing their way through,” shared INSP (V) Soh. “However, they usually reek of alcohol and the odour is too strong to be ignored. Some drivers are so drunk that they even pass out or fall asleep in the police car while on their way to the

Motorists who do not exceed the legal limit can still be charged for drink-driving if they are unable to control the vehicle properly. If convicted, the drivers can be disqualified from driving for 12 to 48 months or even lose their driving licence permanently. “Many of these accidents can be prevented. If only more motorists would drive with care and not violate any traffic rules,” said INSP (V) Soh. “Through engagement, I hope we can help to improve the situation.” Other than enforcing traffic regulations, the VSCs are also deployed to manage road traffic during major events such as the National Day Parade and Singapore Grand Prix. “I am thankful to be part of the Traffic Police family because the regulars trust the VSCs and treat us as equals. I want to contribute as much as I can to make our roads safe for everyone,” said INSP (V) Soh.

July 2016 marked the commissioning of the Protective Security Command (ProCom). Commissioner of Police (CP) Mr Hoong Wee Teck was the Guest of Honour for the historic event. Deputy Commissioner (Policy) Mr Lim Kok Thai; Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Mr Lau Peet Meng; staff department directors and ProCom NS Key Appointment Holders (KAH) witnessed this significant milestone for the Singapore Police Force. The ceremony featured a turnout guard, consisting of PNSF ProCom trainers commanded by SSI Tony Lim, and donning the new ProCom uniform. During the ceremony, Director Police National Service Department (PNSD) and Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Manimaran Pushpanathan shared the transformative journey of KINs to ProCom, talking about its relevance in the current security climate and how to make National Service more meaningful. Following the ceremony, CP engaged officers in a dialogue session. A range of issues – from training, interoperability with the larger SPF, meaningful roles for NS officers and culture – were discussed. CP’s words of encouragement and expressed 26

They will undergo specialised training by ProCom and be deployed in December 2016.

PLAYING OUR PART AS SG SECURE MOBILISERS
T
WORDS LTC (NS) DENNIS GAY, COMMANDER, 31 PUBLIC SHELTER & RESILIENCE UNIT
he renaming of Shelter Battalion HQ to Public Shelter & Resilience Unit (PSRU) signifies an expansion of the roles that my subunits at the 31 PSRU must fulfil. In addition to managing public shelters, our responsibilities now also involve engaging the community in our fight against the threats of terrorism. On the first day of their In-CampTraining (ICT) this year, some of my men in the 305(A) MRT Shelter Company (Bartley) had the opportunity to learn more about the ‘SG Secure’ national movement. The ICT enabled them to better appreciate the importance of knowing what to do during a terror attack, and how to stay strong and
united after an incident. As Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam says, it is a question of ‘when’, not ‘whether’, an attack will take place in Singapore. We were thus enthusiastic about sharing the SG Secure message with Singapore households during our door-to-door visits, conducted during the ICT. On the afternoon of 16 July 2016, 31 PSRU HQ and 305(A) MRT Shelter Company (Bartley) were deployed to several HDB blocks in Yishun for door-to-door visits. My Deputy Unit Commander and I monitored and coordinated the movements from the command post. For many of the men, it was their first time being involved in face-to-face interactions with
residents. Most of the residents were very friendly and receptive towards the engagement sessions. As the PSRU commander, I was impressed by my men’s maiden doorto-door house visit engagement. I’m confident that the other PSRUs would also be successful in sharing the SG Secure message to the other residents in Singapore. Kudos to 31 PSRU HQ and 305(A) MRT Shelter Company (Bartley) for successfully engaging the residents on the ‘Run, Hide and Tell’ and improvised first-aid skills ‘Press, Tie and Tell’ advisories. We are confident that this important outreach programme will help better prepare residents for emergency situations.

TASK FORCE ALERT Keeping the country safe as a DSTF officer
Division Special Task Force
Serving my NS in SPF really showed me how we cannot take what we have for granted, even in peacetime. In my current role as a DSTF officer, we perform proactive policing along Orchard Road, projecting a strong police presence to deter and detect crime. The long hours on our feet is the single biggest challenge. Every tour of duty, we move up and down the shopping belt on foot, covering about 18 to 20km over 12 hours. The reward is knowing that I’m playing my part in keeping Singapore’s famous shopping stretch safe. This satisfaction is particularly strong because it was my team who recently assisted in the arrest of an individual for suspected theft.
The PNSmen of the Division Special Task Force (DSTF) perform anti-crime patrols during peacetime and conduct station defence and cluster patrols in situations of heightened tension or national emergency. Recently revamped, the DSTF retains officers in their same groups and sections for every recall cycle, so that stronger group identity and camaraderie are fostered.

uring my National Service, I was a Staff Officer, NSmen Affairs, at the Police National Service Department (PNSD). I assisted the NSmen Affairs Officer to coordinate with the respective Land Divisions in rolling out, tracking and evaluating initiatives affecting NSmen. We also planned and executed various silent and open mobilisation exercises to evaluate the preparedness of our national service reserves in times of unforeseen crises. Because of NS, I am more appreciative of the country, of the good planning and commitment of those further up the chain of command, who ensure that Singapore is safe and secure.
Outside of SPF, I am a consultant in the education industry, working with schools, JCs, polytechnics and universities to plan and execute outdoor education programmes. It is an immensely satisfying career. I’ve also actively volunteered as a Scout Leader with the Singapore Scout Association for the past eight years, and I spend Saturday mornings leading a Scout Troop at my alma mater. For leisure, I am really into electronics and computer gadgets, as well as computer games. My advice for NSFs would be this: National Service is a duty that we perform for our families and the families of everyone living and working in Singapore. Everyone’s contribution matters, no matter how small, boring or seemingly insignificant.

uring my full-time National Service, I was Section Commander at Bukit Batok Fire Station. The experience with SCDF positively influenced my perception of and attitude towards people and life. From dealing with life-and-death situations and learning to build camaraderie with people – even strangers – I realised how unpredictable life can be and that we should treasure every moment and cherish our loved ones. My forte is in hosting events, public speaking and conducting training for schools. I’ve been emceeing for over 10 years, and I started teaching in schools on a part-time basis after I completed my NS in 2013. Recently, I joined the Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group as a full-time trainer to continue inspiring young people.
I’m currently a member of the SCDF NS branding sub-committee and I occasionally emcee at SCDF events. In 2014, I was roped in as an emcee in the Singapore–Global Firefighters & Paramedics Challenge (SGFPC). Because of my background in hosting events, I was also asked to mentor emcees from the Force. It felt really intimidating at first because I had to train officers who were much more senior in years and rank than me! However, everyone was very cooperative, and we eventually had an awesome team for the event. On my Facebook page, I share my experiences as a firefighter, stories from the classroom or anecdotes of everyday life to more than 24,000 followers. Some articles went viral, reaching half a million readers, while a few others appeared deeply dividing. Regardless of appeal, I believe we all have stories to share and

I choose to use my social position from which to broach topics about life, love and other issues. To all new enlistees who are embarking on their NS journey, I would say, “Do your best and serve with pride. Being in the Home Team will challenge you to deal with many reallife situations, and the experience will certainly make a difference in your life and that of others.”
About SGFPC
For many years, SCDF has organised a series of rescue and fire-fighting challenges, known as the CD Skills Competition. In 2012, the competition was renamed as the Singapore-Global Firefighters & Paramedics Challenge (SGFPC) to reflect the international outlook of the event and to foster strong networks within and beyond the Asia Pacific region. Does planning earlier for retirement really make a difference? Absolutely. Here’s how you can put away less and still reap a lot more. Text by Ryan Ong
Mathematical evidence from Manulife Singapore on why putting a little away earlier is way better than saving more later. A recent study by Manulife shows that most Singaporeans start planning for retirement only around age 38. Perhaps as a consequence of this, only two out of five Singaporeans are confident about meeting their retirement needs. In truth, 38 is a late age in which to start retirement planning. Consider the retirement fund of someone who starts saving at 38, versus someone who starts saving at 25. Assuming they both put away S$500 a month with a plan to retire at the age of 61 (the most desired retirement age in Singapore, as indicated from the same Manulife Singapore study), with a plan that grows their money at a projected rate of 4.75 per cent per annum (typical rate of return for many insurance plans). The 25 year old, after building a retirement fund for 36 years, will have saved around S$602,114 by retirement. The 38 year old on the other hand would have amassed just S$260,134. This is a difference of over S$340,000 — almost sufficient to buy another three-room flat today. This difference is due to the power of compounding interest, which Albert Einstein famously called “the most powerful force in the universe”. Consider how quickly S$1,000 grows over 10 years, at a compounding rate of five per cent per annum, without even adding additional funds.

part of your earnings. You manage to save S$1,500 a month for retirement, at a projected 4.75 per cent returns, over 30 years. By the time you reach 55, you could potentially have a little over S$1 million. This is sufficient to provide you with around S$80 per day, until the age of 90. You could, in effect, retire at 55 instead of working till 65. We know it can be challenging to start saving for retirement early. If you are not earning as much at the start of your career, even setting aside S$500 a month can be a challenge. The point is even a small amount saved over time can make a big difference — as long as you start early.
Notice that the interest earned increases each time. This is because it builds on (compounds) the previous end value.
Ready For Life.
There is also another reason to start planning for retirement early: if you’re ambitious, you may aspire to retire before the age of 61. Say you’re 25, and are disciplined enough to set aside a large
