n 24 March 2015, NSmen, staff and members of the public dropped by Balestier and Bukit Batok clubhouse, where tribute corners were set up in memory of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Over 3,000 heartfelt messages and condolences were received during the Period of National Mourning from 23 to 29 March. A live televised broadcast of the State Funeral was also held at both clubhouses. NSmen, staff and members gathered to pay their last respects to Singapore’s first prime minister. Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister

for Foreign Affairs, and President of HomeTeamNS, wrote in his tribute to Mr Lee: “I always tell my friends, if you know you are going to be born a minority or poor, pray to be born in Singapore. Thank you Mr Lee for making this our home! Forever indebted, and eternally grateful.”

A Home Team salute

For five days, 60 vigil guards from the SPF and SAF stood beside Mr Lee’s casket in Parliament House – the nation’s highest form of respect. These officers were called back into camp after Mr Lee passed away on March 23 and underwent two days of training lasting eight hours each, to ensure that they execute their duties to perfection. Working around the clock

tribute

in shifts of 30 minutes each, each guard did around four watches a day, enduring numb feet and sore backs as more than 415,000 paid their last respects to Mr Lee. While the vigil guards have received extensive coverage in the local media, many members of the Home Team worked tirelessly as unsung heroes. SCDF and SPF NSmen were deployed at various functions during the National Mourning Week. These included receiving foreign dignitaries at the airport, working with regular officers to provide security, traffic and crowd control, as well as medical coverage during the lying-in-state at Parliament House, community tribute areas, the State Funeral procession and State Funeral service.

“Many of our NSmen willingly stepped forward and volunteered when the call went out,” said Mr S Iswaran, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Trade and Industry. “I am proud of our NSFs, NSmen and volunteers who once again showed that they are an integral part of the Home Team, and whom we can count upon at all times. Thank you very much for your dedication and commitment to service.” HomeTeamNS would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his family, and to thank all our NSmen for the good work. You have made us proud.

STANDING VIGIL FROM THE HOME TEAM

“The vigil guards put in a few hours to stand vigil for Mr Lee, who had committed his entire life to build Singapore. This is what we could do to honour him. The public who queued for hours to pay their respect also deserve much praise. Despite being frail the last few years, Mr Lee made effort to meet his residents. It showed how much he care about them.” — DAC (NS) CHAI YEE YUEN, LIONEL, NS COMMANDER, A DIV, SPF

“Being called for vigil guard duty is a first time for me. It is my honour to do this for Mr Lee’s final journey. I guess the executive decision for the lying-instate to go 24 hours surprised everyone. We (TransCom) quickly recalled our NSmen for duty, and all of them responded willingly. I am grateful to them for their support.” — DAC (NS) WAN CHEE TONG, JONATHAN, NS COMMANDER, TRANSCOM, SPF

“I feel privileged to be able to express my gratitude by standing vigil for Mr Lee Kuan Yew. As I stood with my head bowed down and sword inverted in Parliament House, I could feel the outpouring of grief of the public as they walked past to pay their respect. This is something I will never forget.” — SUPT (NS) PHUA YEOW BOON, NICHOLAS, NS HEAD MANPOWER, ADMINISTRATION AND LOGISTICS, A DIV, SPF

“…I saw how our Police officers worked closely with SAF colleagues to create the largest queuing areas I have seen on the Padang, in just a few hours. On the third day, our officers created a spillover area for the queue to loop to the floating platform, to absorb a surge in demand. But even that turned out to be insufficient. On the third night, when the queue had to be temporarily suspended due to public safety concerns, our officers on the ground handled the crowd firmly but professionally. Besides enabling the public to pay their respects, many of you were also involved in protecting the local and foreign dignitaries who came to pay their last respects. Your close collaboration with MFA and other government agencies was highly commendable, considering the many ad hoc requests by foreign leaders from around the world who came to say their final farewell to Mr Lee. CNB officers helped out during the State Funeral procession. And ICA officers were on standby to help with security screening. Day and night, our SCDF officers provided on-site medical and emergency response to ensure that the many thousands who were there for long hours were taken care of. SCDF sirens were sounded to bring Singaporeans across our country together for one minute of silence to show our united respect for Mr Lee. Our Volunteers and NSmen also played important parts, serving alongside their full-time and regular colleagues… …Thank you very much for your dedication, hard work and commitment to duty to make all this possible. Let us re-dedicate ourselves to continue serving in the same spirit with Honour and Unity. You have made Mr Lee and Singapore proud of the Home Team.” — MR TEO CHEE HEAN, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, COORDINATING MINISTER FOR NATIONAL SECURITY AND MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS, IN HIS NOTE TO HOME TEAM OFFICERS ON SUNDAY, 29 MARCH 2015

LUNAR BLESSINGS

Ushering in the Year of the Goat and exciting times ahead with an auspicious reunion!

M

embers can look forward to an exciting year ahead in 2015. It’s more than just Singapore’s 50th birthday – it’s also HomeTeamNS’ 10th anniversary! On 28 February, the management, NSman volunteers and staff of HomeTeamNS gathered at HomeTeamNS Bukit Batok for their annual “Lou Hei” session during Chinese New Year 2015 to celebrate our transformational journey and have a toss for good blessings. Gracing the event was Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, and President of HomeTeamNS. Also present were SPF Commissioner Hoong Wee Teck and Commissioner SCDF Eric Yap, both VicePresidents of HomeTeamNS. 6

The celebration was especially sweet for Mr Eric Yap, as he celebrated his birthday with the HomeTeamNS family. Said Mr Masagos: “It has not been an easy journey for the torch to be passed on, and for people to come together as one HomeTeamNS, yet HomeTeamNS has come a long way and made great progress. The Association needs to constantly reinvent itself so as to remain relevant and meet the lifestyle and recreational needs for our current as well as future members.” All present also received mandarin oranges for good fortune. The reunion served as a good platform for NSmen and staff to kick-start the new year as a Home Team family. HomeTeamNS would like to thank all our NSman volunteers and members for their support!

NO HOLES BARRED!

Close to 100 golfers pit their skills to break the green in the Annual Golf Championship 2015! We had a few birdies and many bogeys at Sembawang Country Club on 26 February. Yet, GolfLinks achieved a Hole-in-One when our members bonded beyond the green during the annual dinner, where we presented 70 lucky draw prizes, top 15 best golfers, jackpot cash giveaways and novelty prizes. From its humble beginnings in 1998, GolfLinks has grown to 700 members. Bonded with a passion for the swing, and a Hyundai Sonata 2.0 up for grabs, the annual tournament turned out to be a draw for members of all ages. After the battle in the green, our golfers had a happy reunion over dinner with games and singing performances. Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, and President of HomeTeamNS graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. “It was an enjoyable game within my flight, and I was pleasantly surprised with

my lucky draw win during dinner. This was a great game to remember,” said Mr Daniel Lee. “GolfLinks did well in organising this event and the food and prizes are great. Many golfers are already thinking of joining the next GolfLinks event!” Visit www.HomeTeamNS.sg for more info on the GolfLinks Interest Group.

MISSION OF FUN: MALACCA!

The Auto Adventure Club explores the historic town during the March holidays On 14 March, the HomeTeamNS Auto Adventure Club set off on a 2D1N road trip to Malacca. Led by its Chairman Mr Low Lai Choon, the convoy was flagged off by Mr Wilfred Yoong, Director of Operations HomeTeamNS, at the Bukit Batok Clubhouse. After a sumptuous breakfast at Gelang Patah, the group had their fill at

a new Peranakan restaurant called Aunty Lee, before heading to the city to play a game called “Break the Code” – great fun where they had to solve puzzles and break codes to escape from a room! Next, the group checked into King’s Green Hotel, and then tried the famous Satay Celup before having a feast at the Portuguese seafood centre. Everyone was

delighted when Chairman Low announced that the meal would be on the AAC! The next day, the group visited the famous Aunty Koh’s cendol, Klebang coconut shake, Baba Charlie for its nonya kueh and milk crepe cake (better known as “thousand-layered cake”) that they bought at the Nadeja café, before heading to AEON for their final stint of shopping. KEEPING FIT TO LEAD

Let’s shape up! While giving back to the nation is important, Home Team Volunteer Leaders also believe in living an active lifestyle

I

f you hear “We are Home Team Volunteers!” cheers at the Botanic Gardens, you might just want to join in the fun too! This was when Chairman of Home Team Volunteer Network, Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee, led a group of Home Team Volunteer Leaders for a morning run. “I run about four to five times a week. Exercise not only keeps your body fit but your mind agile and alert as well,” said A/Prof Ho. The Home Team Volunteer Network run was mooted by Assoc Prof Ho Peng 22

Kee, Chairman of Home Team Volunteer Network, who is a firm believer that one is in a better shape to head when physically and mentally fit. He wants to inculcate the value of leading a healthier lifestyle in the volunteer leaders.

The first run last year was organised by the Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSC). Various Home Team departments will take turns to organise the quarterly run. Invitations are also sent to senior officers and volunteer leaders from various volunteer schemes. As a treat, the group will end the session with going to a nearby eatery for a get-together breakfast. In one of the sessions, 20 SCDF volunteers from the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU), Crisis Volunteers, CD Lionhearters and National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) participated in the run and completed it despite the rainy morning. “These run sessions allow me to meet and interact with other schools’ CD Lionhearters and it’s heartening to run with like-minded volunteers who are motivated to adopt a healthier lifestyle,” said Mr Muhammad Azri Bin Ngadi, President of the Nanyang Polytechnic’s CD Lionhearters’ club. “This interaction also sparked inspirations for inter-club collaborations and activities.”

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY Former Rescue Battalion Commander Varella Alan Joseph, 51, now serves as a SCDF Crisis Volunteer

T

he year 2012 marked the completion of my 22 years of NS duty. I recalled my reluctance to clear my SCDF outfits from my wardrobe, which ranged from formal dining jackets to the number 4 uniform, for fear of losing the fond memories I had as part of our nation’s Total Defence. So I was delighted when the SCDF invited me to sign up as a Crisis Volunteer in 2014. However, I was initially hesitant because I knew my wife would be worried whenever I was in-camp or involved in an 24

exercise. After striking an agreement with my wife that I would be careful, I went ahead and had no regrets since. I enjoyed the activities planned by the Home Team Volunteer Network and the company of like-minded volunteers from various Home Team organisations. In addition to learning journeys to the ISD Heritage Centre and Changi Airport, I also attended the Skills@Home programme, which served as a useful refresher for the skills of first aid, fire extinguishing and counselling.

The writer is a former NS Commander of 32A Rescue Battalion SCDF and a Lead Physics Teacher in Temasek Junior College.

ABOUT SCDF CRISIS VOLUNTEERS SCHEME • I ntroduced in June 2007 to enable selected servicemen who have completed their ORNS training cycle to volunteer their skills and expertise during a crisis •C risis Volunteers are invited to participate in SCDF standby operations, major exercises and activities •S CDF conducts regular workshops for the Crisis Volunteers to keep them updated on the latest developments in the SCDF

WORDS VARELLA ALAN JOSEPH

SCDF Crisis Volunteer Varella Alan Joseph (right) and MAJ (NS) Sim Meng San at Exercise Rambo (inset)

In January this year, the SCDF invited me to observe Exercise Rambo – the ultimate test of field proficiency in the SCDF – to contribute my insights as a former Commander of a Rescue Battalion. I relished the opportunity to be part of this exercise in a different capacity. It was 31A Rescue Battalion that was tested with difficult and realistic scenarios at the Civil Defence Academy field training area. Although I was tasked to observe the forward command post, I also moved around to observe the rescuers at work. It was exhilarating to witness the discipline and skills of these NSmen. The activities I attended as a Crisis Volunteer have been enriching and I am already looking forward to the next activity. It felt great that the skills and experience I had gained during my NS stint could still be put to good use.

TOTAL RECALL Police Coast Guard achieves 100% turnout in nationwide Open Mob exercise

O

n 14 March, 200 NSmen were recalled to the Police Coast Guard Headquarters at Brani Base in a nationwide Open Mobilisation exercise by the Police Coast Guard (PCG) and Police National Service Department (PNSD). Planning for a mobilisation of this scale began during the PCG Management Retreat in February. Topics such as the number of personnel to be recalled and the flow of recall were discussed to streamline the reporting procedure and to ensure all recalled personnel report to base on time. A team of officers comprising of Key Appointment Holders (KAH), Command Appointment Holders (CAH), PCG PNS department, NS Provost and NS Service Support were appointed to take charge of the mobilisation. Additional processes were introduced to confirm and effectively manage the groups of reporting NSmen. This started with the Open Mobilisation pass issued out to each NSman registering at Seah Im Bus Interchange. This approach helped officers at Brani Base to anticipate the number of NSmen reporting. There were several challenges the team had to overcome during the mobilisation. Due to the location of the Brani Base, the team had to ferry a

large number of NSmen on to the island. Shuttle buses were specially chartered for this Open Mob at Harbourfront Bus Interchange to and fro PCG Brani HQ. As PCG Brani Base is situated inside PSA Brani terminal, which is gazetted as a Protected Area, a pre-screening counter was set up at Harbourfront Bus Interchange to ensure that only those NSmen in the recall listing were allowed to board the bus to PCG Brani HQ. In addition, the mobilisation date coincided with an ongoing PCG project,

“Threatcon D, in which higher security scans were expected at the PCG gates. This impeded the flow of NSmen reporting for the mobilisation. However, with thorough planning and strong teamwork, all 200 NSmen managed to report within the stipulated timing of 2pm to 6pm. The team also recorded a 100% turnout rate just 90 minutes after the exercise began at 2pm. Well done PCG and PNSD, and kudos to all our NSmen for reporting on time!

NS buddies Amos Chow (left) and Wilson Foo join forces to preserve our culinary heritage

L

ocal F&B heroes Amos (A) and Wilson (W) share their NS experience and what it takes to pursue their passion. A: My experience with the NS Personnel Department (NSPD) has taught me to be organised and systematic. I apply what I have learnt in running my own business. W: The work I did with NSPD was HRrelated – such as matching individuals to vocations based on their skills and qualifications. This helped me when I worked in Marina Bay Sands, where I was involved in hiring and training people. A: Whenever I witness an emergency situation, the SCDF is always quick to respond. I'm proud to serve my NS in an organisation that saves lives every day. W: One day, when I was still an NSF, I was out to buy food for my grandparents, who lived by themselves. On my way back I saw an SCDF ambulance downstairs. Little did I know it was here for my grandpa, who had just passed out. A medic noticed my SCDF uniform and told me: “Don’t worry sergeant, your grandpa is well taken care of.” That really touched me. A: Education is important to me. Not just in the academic sense, but in lifelong learning and knowing why we do certain things. With our “Past 2 Present” Restaurant, we plan to offer local heritage cuisine (such as a “1965 set meal”) with the aim of educating Singaporeans on their true meaning and origin.

28

W: By setting up “Past 2 Present”, I want to give back to the community by preserving our heritage. We plan to hold workshops for students to learn how to make mooncakes, murukku and other local snacks. We also support local F&B partners such as OnTap, a local craft beer brewer. A: In future, we plan to open two to three restaurants in prime locations, and work with local F&B partners to spread our uniquely Singapore cuisine to the world. We are both working on a concept called “Heritage Tree” to make heritage food available to tourists in a souvenir gift pack. W: Many tourists end up getting bak kwa or chocolates in the shape of the Merlion as food souvenirs. With “Heritage Tree”, we want to present authentic dishes – think Boon Tong Kee chicken rice mix, Ya Kun kaya and Ng Ah Sio bak kut teh spice mix – all in a classy gift pack.

A: If you’re thinking of going into F&B, do it if you have the passion. Don’t do it if you don’t have determination. Always be flexible to adapt to changes. W: We get to be our own boss, but we get no leave, no day off and work 13 to 15 hours a day. So do it for love, not money.

Cancer Fighter

Dr Abdul Qader is changing the world, one cell at a time

M

y dream is to find a cure for cancer. I’m part of an A*STAR research team developing Singapore’s first homegrown drug for cancer treatment, and we’re working to get it to reach clinical trials so that we can test it on humans directly. I love what I do because I get to test and develop any idea I have. If they don’t work, I tweak it and test it again. As a researcher, you are trying to solve a problem and learning at the same time. That, to me, is fantastic. I had a hard time with my PhD in cancer biology. I had to change my research hypothesis in my second year – a drastic move – but it turned out to be a breakthrough and the results became the cover story on the Journal of Clinical Investigation, an international periodical. This experience taught me that when you are trying to prove something so much, you don’t allow the truth to

shine through. You got to respect the experiment, respect the results and not be bullheaded about it. My NS days were the best years of my life because I made many friends. I grew up as an only child and suddenly I had to live with 40 guys in the same room! It was a great experience. ‘G’ Division has a fantastic PNS Department. Their support, and the mutual respect we have, is a model for effective NSmen engagement. The SPF made me feel like part of the force, because there is a lot of trust between NSmen and the regulars. Each time I wear my blue uniform, I feel like I’m just coming back to work on a normal day. I am proud to be an SPF NSman. As NS Commanding Officer Changi NPC, I also hold the secondary appointment of CO Geylang Bazaar, where my team and I keep the human traffic safe and orderly every Hari Raya season.

If you’re considering a career in research, go and do an attachment or internship first to understand what you are getting yourself into. If you still love it, go for it. Don’t go in without any firsthand experience of what research is like, otherwise you may be in for a shock.
