Martial arts may be for the tough, but there’s a lot more to it than one might imagine – for instance, the late Bruce Lee was as much a philosopher as he was a kung fu master. Frontline speaks to two lads who tell us what it means to be a martial artist.
A commitment to perfection “Training and commitment is key to any martial art,” said NSPI Tan Jia Ming, 23, a second-dan black belt taekwondo exponent. “We practice our moves a hundred times, a thousand times… the repetitions may seem aimless, but they serve to hone every aspect of our art, until we are as close to perfection as possible.” Martial arts often place great physical demands on those who practice them. “Capoeira differs from other martial arts in that it requires lots of stamina,” said CPL Muhammad Danial Bin Rahmat, 24, a capoeirista and former national junior silat exponent. “We’re always moving to maintain a rhythmic momentum in both defence and attack, and you need to be fit and flexible to execute all the flips and rolls in capoeira.” CPL Muhammad Danial was the head of the Capoeira Club that he founded while studying in Republic Polytechnic. Today he continues to showcase the art in the form of public performances at Orchard Road and Clarke Quay. “I practice capoeira as a leisure activity, but nonetheless it still takes plenty of passion, patience and discipline to perfect these moves,” he said.
NSPI Tan Jia Ming, 23 • Assistant Ops Officer (Management), Central Police Division, SPF • Quarterfinalist, 5th National Taekwondo Expose, Poomsae Category • Silver medallist, 2nd Hwarang Meet, Heavyweight Category
Passion is a common force that drives both martial artists. “Taekwondo has been part of my life for 13 years, and the satisfaction I get is beyond appointments and grades,” said NSPI Tan, who practices more than five times a week when preparing for competitions or promotion grading. “Competitions are useful, as they help us push ourselves to become better in our art.”
COVER STORY
More than just brawn For CPL Muhammad Danial, it is not enough to just learn the cool acrobatic moves in capoeira, a colourful Brazilian sport that has its roots in the age of slavery. “In capoeira, we ‘fight like a dance and dance like a fight’… in order to appreciate why this is so, we need to understand the history, culture and musical instruments of the art itself,” said CPL Muhammad Danial. “With every new move or flip we learn, we also learn the songs and the rich cultural meaning behind capoeira, which was invented by slaves to overcome their oppressive colonial masters.” To NSPI Tan, taekwondo represents a balance of mind and body – to achieve physical endurance while preserving mental strength. “Training allows exponents to attain a state where our bodies are worked tirelessly while our mind remains calm, to keep strategising and planning our next move,” said NSPI Tan. “In taekwondo, there is a set of core moves relevant to each grade called poomsae, which teaches us to be patient, calm and focused in all aspects.” CPL Muhammad Danial is happy that the Capoeira Club that he founded in Republic Polytechnic continues to spread the art to his juniors. As for NSPI Tan, he makes it a point to share his experience as a coach with Megaforce Taekwondo. “It is rewarding to see my students shine in their own ways and grow as a taekwondo exponent,” said NSPI Tan. “Sharing my experience with people from all walks of life has allowed me to grow as an individual… this has made me enjoy the sport even more.”

Comrades with compassion
They say love transcends all boundaries. Few charitable organisations walk the talk better than the venerable Tzu Chi Foundation, which was recognised in 2011 by Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Mr Masagos Zulkifli for their volunteer work with the Singapore Prison Service. Tzu Chi’s Seeds of Hope bursary programme has helped more than 2,000 students, of which half are Malays, and it operates two free clinics that are open to everyone. Its blood donation drives, community recycling points, hospice visits and education initiatives require the help of a dedicated army of volunteers. Anyone – regardless of race, language and religion – can be a Tzu Chi volunteer, so visit their website for details on signing up. www.tzuchi.org.sg
Blood is perhaps the greatest gift anyone could give. A single donation takes only around an hour of your time and can save up to three lives. If you’re 16 to 60 years old and weigh at least 45kg, you’re eligible to be a true lifesaving hero (donors under 18 will need to fill in a consent form). Giving this gift of life is easier
than you think – you can do it at the three blood banks listed here. What’s more, the free medical screening, haemoglobin test, biscuits and Milo, and the knowledge that you will gain loads of karma will be enough to put a big smile on your face. www.redcross.org.sg/articles/save-lives

Local Singsation LCP Sairi Mohd wows the audience with his rich vocals
When he’s not saving people, LCP Sairi Mohd is busy mesmerising them with his smooth voice and slick moves. Frontline catches up with this young performer who has already been singing for more than ten years. What do you do in the SCDF? I’m currently a firefighter with the Bukit Batok Fire Station.
How did you become so good in what you do? Singing did not come easy to me. I had no vocal training but I got some tips on singing from my cousin, who is also a singer. I love singing, and I just make it a point to keep practising all the time – be it in the shower or a stairwell or any enclosed space. I also practise a lot at karaoke lounges. What’s next in your singing career? I will continue to sing as it’s something I love. I’m now learning hip-hop dancing, and my group won the Pulse! Streetdance Competition last November. For now I intend to sign on as a regular firefighter when I ORD, and then I’ll still join these talent competitions whenever I can. Any advice for aspiring singers? Practice makes perfect, so keep practising to improve yourself. Make use of your talent and give yourself a chance – sign up for singing competitions. Don’t stop singing and don’t give up!

WORDS JEFFREY KONG PHOTOs long fei/t2 pictures
How did you get started in singing? When I was nine, I joined a Malay singing competition in school, and I came in third. Since then I’ve been taking part in singing competitions whenever I can. In 2009, I came in second in the NTU Impresario Nationwide Talent Competition. In 2011, I won the People’s Association Youth Got Talent competition, and last year, I was among the top 40 finalists (out of 3,000 contestants) in the Anugerah singing contest organised by MediaCorp Suria.

Young Gun
SC Wu Wenyi is set to make his mark in the shooting arena
One of the youngest talents featured on Frontline, SC Wu Wenyi is preparing himself to represent Singapore in several international competitions – while juggling his duties as a police officer. What do you do in the SPF? I’m currently a Foot Patrol Officer with the Public Transport Security Command (TRANSCOM). My job is to patrol public transport areas such as MRT stations and bus interchanges. How did you get started in shooting? I took up air rifle as my CCA in Secondary 1 in Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School. When I was in Secondary 3, I switched to the 10m air pistol, which remains my main event. In 2010, Singapore won the bid to host the Youth Olympic Games, and so I signed up to compete for a chance to shoot, which I managed to do after six months of selection. Later on I also started to shoot the 25m standard pistol as a second event. How did you become so good in what you do? If you want to do well in something, you must most importantly have passion for it. Then comes all the hard work and perseverance. Of course talent also helps, but I don’t think I am particularly talented in shooting – all I have is passion and hard work. I practice three to four times every week without fail. What’s next in your shooting career? I have just competed in the Asian Air Gun Shooting Championships in China and the Thailand Open Shooting Championships last year, and I will be shooting in this year’s SEA Games in Myanmar. Any advice for aspiring shooters? Believe in yourself and have confidence in what you are doing. Never give up and persevere to the very end. When you’re shooting, focus on doing the right thing rather than the score, and you’ll find it easier to concentrate. Make every shot count!

Guardian introduced a webcam pharmacy service in 2009. This is a milestone for the pharmacy profession and Guardian, as Singapore is the only Asian country that supports such a service. This service utilises high-definition, audio and video facilities “to bring the pharmacist to the people”. Engaging for
Excellence
On 9 January, 20 APEX members had a dialogue session with DAC Manimaran Pushpanatan, Deputy Director of the Police National Service Department, and NS Key Appointment Holders (KAHs). During the dialogue session, APEX members presented their plans on how they could better engage the younger NS personnel through various initiatives, such as helping new enlistees cope with the new experience of joining the force, and how HomeTeamNS could play a key role in promoting a sense of camaraderie amongst their peers as well as a sense of belonging to the Home Team. They also shared how the APEX programme has helped them better understand and spearhead the SPF mission through continued dialogue with the PNSD management and the mentorship programme led by SUPT (NS) Raymond Huang. DAC Manimaran wanted APEX members to look into core mission-centric issues such as policies, training and internal communication

for PNS officers. The NS KAHs also shared their NS experience and how they balanced their work and NS commitments. They said their NS experience, although challenging, has enriched and equipped them with essential skills, such as leading a team and having to constantly adapt to different situations, and this has helped them hold senior positions in large organisations. The dialogue concluded with a surprise birthday celebration for DAC (NS) Lionel Chai, NS Commander “A” Division, who thanked everyone for celebrating the occasion with him.

he thought of having to clear IPPT can instill fear and anxiety in some NSmen. However, it is found that most NSmen do not dread exercise, but rather repeated failures in IPPT and the RT that follows. IPT: Ten sessions within nine months The enhanced IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) programme is designed to help NSmen to pass their IPPT. The IPT comprises ten training sessions to be completed within nine months (for those who sign up at the start of the workyear), giving NSmen a flexible timeframe to engage in voluntary training.
PPT: Just a little bit more each year Upon signing up for IPT, each NSman is assigned a Personal Performance Target (PPT). These targets are increased every year to motivate NSmen to seek continuous improvement in their fitness. While these targets are below the IPPT passing standard, the gradual raising of the PPT in the IPT prepares an NSman to ultimately pass the actual IPPT.
By setting intermediate performance targets, the programme seeks to gradually help the NSmen to pass their IPPT. Physical training instructors help the NSmen by training them in their weak areas of IPPT, recommending exercises they can perform on a daily basis, and even providing tips on how to eat healthily.
Another incentive of the IPT is that an NSman is deemed to have satisfied the IPPT requirement for the workyear if he is able to achieve the PPT at any point of time during the IPT. Said IPT participant SGT (NS) Tang Haojie from 41A Rescue Battalion: “The IPT was very helpful. The PTIs really helped me improve my techniques for the various stations, especially the standing broad jump. I’d recommend the IPT to fellow NSmen struggling to pass their IPPT, as the IPT helps you work smarter to tackle your weaknesses.”
LCP (NS) Muhammad Ridzuan Bin Kamil from 12B Rescue Battalion always found it difficulty to pass his 2.4km run, often taking more than 13 minutes to complete. After undergoing IPT, he passed with a timing of 11 minutes 34 seconds. “Without the PTI’s guidance, I really might never have achieved this result. It’s amazing what a little coaching can do for you.”
Although personal fitness is one’s own responsibility, achieving the desired level of fitness need not be an uphill battle. By introducing a flexible, structured and gradual approach to training, the IPT programme is expected to raise the fitness levels of more NSmen – for the benefit of both their NS roles as well as their personal health.
