4 HUA HIN CELEBRATES THE 64TH CORONATION ANNIVERSARY OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING

“We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” on the ancient royal tradition adopted from India, which specified five principal royal regalia as the symbols of kingship. On May 5, 1950 King Bhumibol Adulyadej was crowned Rama IX of Thailand, the ninth king of the Chakri dynasty. The royal coronation ceremony was first performed in the Grand Palace in Bangkok, four years after he assumed his kingship in 1946. After becoming King Rama IX at the age of 18, His Majesty returned to Switzerland to resume his studies at the University of Lausanne. He returned to Thailand in 1950, when the royal coronation ceremony took place. By tradition, the royal coronation ceremony signifies the official recognition of the ruling monarch by the Thai people. At that traditional coronation ceremony, His Majesty pronounced the traditional Oath of Accession: “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” Thailand’s revered King made a rare public appearance on Monday 5th May to mark the 64th anniversary of his coronation on Coronation Day. This celebration of the King’s reign is known in Thai as Wan Chatramongkhol and involves religious and civil ceremonies over a three-day period. King Bhumibol is the world’s longest-reigning monarch and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history. He is a father figure for Thais and was greeted by a sea of yellow – his signature colour – as his vehicle passed through Hua Hin, where he has lived since leaving a Bangkok hospital last August. Thousands of people took to the streets to wave flags and shout “Song Phra Chareon”. Translated this is “long live the King”, a sentiment expressed fondly by people nationwide. His Majesty granted an audience to members of the Royal Family and government officials at Rajapracha Samakhom Pavilion within the Klai Kangwol Palace. A short service was held with Monks from throughout the kingdom leading prayers.

The royal coronation ceremony was adapted in 1950 to suit conditions of the country in the post-war period, and, more importantly, to be in harmony with the spirit of the democratic era. The Television Pool of Thailand broadcast the ceremonies and twelve large LCD screens were installed on Phetchakasem Road near the palace for well-wishers to watch proceedings. The landscape around the Klai Kangwol Palace displayed decorations along both sides of Phetchakasem Road, from Hua Hin Airport to the Hua Hin Municipality Market. Flags and portraits of His Majesty the King were also displayed. Medical teams, water and snacks were also ready to help well-wishers cope with a hot day out in the sun. Looks of admiration and delight were very evident on the faces of everyone paying their respects, many of whom had travelled from places distant from Hua Hin to be a part of the coronation experience first-hand. Two days after Coronation Day, His Majesty again left the Klai Kangwon Palace to revisit the Chang Hua Mun project in Phetchaburi Province. This royal visit on May 7th was to follow the progress of the agricultural demonstration farm which he established in 2009 using royal funds. During the visit, His Majesty paid particular interest to the dairy cow project which he has previously visited since moving from Siriraj Hospital to Klai Kangwon Palace in August last year. On this occasion, His Majesty milked a month-old calf and visited a cow which had just given birth to a bull calf the previous day, raising the number of cattle, all Holstein Friesians, to 34.

After the religious ceremony, the King graciously assigned His Royal Highness Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn to preside over a Brahmin ceremony celebrating the Throne.

Chang Hua Mun project has served as a demonstration farm to provide knowledge on animal husbandry and cash crop cultivation to farmers. At present about 1,000 young farmers and agricultural students from nationwide visit the farm daily. Produces from the project are supplied to Golden Place shops nationwide.

The royal coronation ceremony was formalised as a royal court tradition in the reign of King Mongkut, Rama IV. He based the ceremony

His Majesty spent over two hours at the Project before returning to Klai Kangwon Palace.

Hua Hin Tennis Club Launched Hua Hin to Host ‘Walk & Run’ Tennis players in Hua Hin have set up a tennis club to welcome international tennis players and help upgrade the city as a focal point for tourism and sport of Thailand. A past Mayor of Hua Hin, Mr. Athikhun Butying, told Hua Hin Today that he and local tennis players had launched the club, following the recommendation of Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, the Chairman of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand. Mr. Suwat said that many world-class tennis players visit Hua Hin to join national tennis matches a couple of times every year. Setting up a tennis club will increase the profile of Hua Hin in the sport. The Hua Hin Tennis Club is chaired by Mr. Athikhun with Mr. Supot Meesawad and Mr. Amnart Pinkaew as deputy chairpersons. The Club has around 50 youth and adult tennis players and is based at the Thawimuk Sport Complex Hua Hin. Novice tennis players will learn the sport from professional trainers while those with experience can also instruct the young ones.

In April a national tennis tournament took place in Hua Hin and Mr. Santi Bhirombhakdee, representing Boonrawd Corp., gave financial support for local tennis players in Hua Hin to join this event. Mr. Athikhun said that Hua Hin already has tennis players who have played at international competitions, namely Sakolwan Khacharoen and Suphot Meesawad.

On 15th May 2014, the Chair of National Olympic Committee of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (NOCT) Gen. Yutthasak Sasiprapha and the deputy chairs Maj. Gen. Jaruek Areeratkaran and Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop attended a meeting at Intercontinental Resort and Spa Hua Hin to discuss preparations for June 2014.

In recent times tennis in the City has received little support however with the Club opening it is hoped that more top level tennis players will emerge be involved in international matches in the future.

After the meeting, Mr. Suwat, who was appointed an administrative chair for the charity event, said that its aim was to honour Their Majesties who are now staying in Hua Hin and recognise the sporting achievements of His Majesty the King. On 16th December 1957, His Majesty won a gold medal for sailing in the 4th SEA Games.

Foreign and Thai residents in Hua Hin who would like to encourage their children to become tennis players are welcome to become members of the Hua Hin Tennis Club. Their children can practice the sport regularly with other members. All young trainees who sufficiently undergo the training from the club may later be able to take part in both national and international tournaments.

New UK Visa Application Centre in Bangkok The United Kingdom has officially unveiled a new and improved visa centre in the capital, aiming to facilitate an increasing number of visa applicants with a wider range of services. Paul Bute, Chargé d’Affaires of the British Embassy, together with Australian Ambassador James Wise and a senior official of VFS Global jointly presided at the inauguration of the Australia & UK Visa Application centre. The UK’s visa application centre relocated to its new home on the 28th floor of the Trendy Office Building on Sukhumvit Road Soi 13, which are shared premises with the Australian visa application centre. The visa application centre aims to process to non-settlement visas in 15 working days

as well as to provide improved services and facilities for an increasing number of Thais who are choosing the UK as a destination for travel, business and study. In 2013, almost 70,000 visas were issued to Thai applicants, up 17 per cent from the previous year. The UK’s visa application centre also provides other services: a passport pass-back service enabling visa applicants to retain their passport while their visa is being processed, a 3-5 day priority service and a prime time appointment service, which allows applicants to submit their application out of regular business hours. However, the centre encourages the UK visa applicants to apply for their visa as early as possible. They can apply up to three months in advance of travel. (MCOT online news)

The event will recognise International Olympic Day on 22nd June. The run will support sporting activities around the world and promote amongst Thai people. “Last year, the Walk & Run for Charity took place in Nakhon Ratchasima. This year, it will be organised in Hua Hin. Actually, we hosted it here in 2010 and we hope that up to 30,000 participants will come to join us,” said Mr. Suwat. “

“The route for walking and running will be in Hua Hin municipal areas, including the Klai Kangwon Royal Residence. Apart from a T-shirt in yellow which is the colour of His Majesty’s birthday, all participants registered for the event will receive a special medal which has a symbol of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the front side and a portrait of His Majesty sailing on the revese side. We will also organise for 800 students to take part in the event. Although the National Broadcasting of Thailand (NBT) will televise this event, I’d like to invite Thai people to participate in the activity to express gratitude to Their Majesties.” The Walk & Run for Charity 2014 consists of a 4.2 kilometre walk and a 10.5 kilometre run. Thailand Driving License:

Tough new tests from 1st June 2014 The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has announced the start of a strict new testing and examination process for obtaining a driving license in Thailand.

The new, more stringent tests will be effective nationwide from 1st June 2014 and are in response to urgent calls for Thailand to improve its appalling road safety record. The key points to the new driving tests will see an increase in the number of training hours for learner drivers from 4 hours to 12 hours or more under the new proposals. New drivers will also have to get to grips with a more thorough and comprehensive driving curriculum that will include 4 hours and intense lectures, as well as a written examination on driving theory consisting of 50 questions. In order to pass the written examination, drivers will need to obtain a score of at least 90% or answer 45 questions out the 50 correctly. This is compared to the current driving examination test that includes

HUA HIN TODAY, JUNE 2014

30 questions, with a passing grade of 75%. The new tests will be mandatory for all new drivers in Thailand. Any driver who wishes to renew their 5 year Thai driving license will also need to attend a one hour ‘refresher’ lecture in order to bring them up to speed with the new curriculum. Drivers who are applying for a 5 year license for the first time will not need to take this class. The Department of Land Transport believes that the new test will bring driving in Thailand to that of international driving standards, making drivers pay more attention when driving and therefore reducing the number of accidents on Thailand’s roads. A spokesperson for the DLT also went on to confirm that it plans to expand the number of driver training centres nationwide in order to accommodate the increase in training and studying time and that the DLT is actively seeking new trainers to help teach the revised driving curriculum.

First Class or Comprehensive coverage is the most expensive insurance option. However finance companies and lessors will often require that the car owner provide this level of insurance. This coverage pays for repair work or the replacement of your vehicle if it is stolen or damaged. Comprehensive

Houses & Condos

Your home may or may not look like a castle. Whatever the case, that old saying is true; your home is your most valuable and expensive asset and should be protected. Home Insurance offers financial and liability protection for your home and possessions.

You need Home Insurance to cover the structure of your house or condo, your personal belongings, the cost of living expenses in case your home is damaged and

Something very important to consider in the amount of coverage; companies offer different levels; from 500,000 to 2,000,000 THB per person (bodily injury or death)

coverage protects against disasters including theft, falling trees, most acts of nature, fire, vandalism and animal accidents. If you are in an accident and are at fault, causing other people’s bodily injuries or death, Bodily Injury Liability will cover medical bills, pain or suffering, loss life of another party and a legal defence if a lawsuit is filed against you.

Many Car Insurance companies insure only 80% of the vehicle’s value, refusing to cover 100%. It is done to prevent loss when owners are fraudulently trying to improve their financial position. It is important to thoroughly scrutinise what is covered and what is not covered in your policy.

you have to move out during the repair work period. It also covers liability claims that result from property loss and injury caused to other people. Purchasing enough Home Insurance provides sufficient coverage in the event of a total loss of your house and its contents due to a disaster. It is also important that you are insured in case someone gets injured on your premises and sues you, or in case you or your family members cause damage to other people’s property. Some policies also include damage caused by household pets. Homes should be insured for 100% of their value so that your insurance company will have to pay you the full amount of the costs to rebuild. If you don’t have enough Home Insurance, you will be paid only some portion of your home’s value, which may be insufficient to replace or repair lost or damaged property.

Medical Insurance

Personal Accident

Most westerners are fortunate to have obligatory medical insurance. When you are in Thailand, see to it that cash or credit cards are always available and have on hand the most pertinent medical insurance documents. In cases of hospital admissions, you are required to pay up front treatment. There have been stories appearing in a local Thai newspaper about a young Thai couple that was turned down upon arriving at a private hospital just because they could not show their money. This is a major ethical flaw in Thailand’s health care system.

Personal accident insurance covers expenses incurred from an accident with a lump sum payment for loss of life.

Although general treatment and admission to private hospitals is quite simple, demanding money up front may be considered very impolite and inappropriate. In most European countries, problems like these are normally avoided because in the first place, patients have obligatory medical insurance and hospitals are confident enough about being paid. Staying in Thailand is generally very desirable however some health care issues are quite concerning. In order to avoid problems, see to it that you already have in place international health care system insurance before you relocate to this Southeast Asian country. Then you will not have to worry about health issues, especially in a medical emergency.

Several types of policies supplement a general insurance program. Often, accidental death and injury insurance is inexpensive. Other policies are similar to disability income, but they pay a cash sum when you have an injury due to an accident. There are several ways to buy personal accident insurance. Some policies only pay for specific types of accident. For more information contact Siam Consulting Tel. 085 962 2232

8 Fashions & life style BIKINIS AND SHOES - TRENDS FOR SUMMER For the last few months Hua Hin Today has been presenting fashion, make-up and hairstyles to adopt for this spring-summer but yet the most important things of the summer haven’t been mentioned yet. What I mean are Bikinis and Sandals to head for the beaches around Hua Hin and Cha-Am.

Saying summer, of course, one of the first things we imagine is the beach and the sun. The thought that crosses our minds right after is the swimwear we just need to choose for maximum attention and the best and the trendiest looks possible. After looking through the best and the most creative suggestions by the fashion giants, we can make sure about our choices and looks, taking into account basic fashion tips for choosing the right swimwear to flatter your body. Trend #1: Mono Suits & Long-Sleeved Pieces

innovation for the season is long-sleeved swimsuits. These options remind us of the suits that the sportsmen and the athletes usually wear for their exercises. However this is and will be the fave options of many girls in Asia to avoid the sun. We just have to wait and see whether long-sleeved swimsuits will gain popularity and put into practice or not. Trend #2: Bandeaux This is a very frequent and cool trend for the coming season, offering its creative and eyecatching strapless design for the various creative interpretations of the brands. Bandeau is one of the everlasting and never-fading options, being at the top of the list for every season. Its design accentuates the fragile and sweet image of a girl to a create and a very romantic feeling with stones and jewels on the centre. Trend #3: Tankinis and Trikinis for Absolute Comfort and Chic Going on with the top spring/ summer 2014 swimwear trends, we can’t but also note some cool and all-time fabulous tankinis and trikinis, each presenting a unique principle of design and functionality. In the case of the tankinis, you can transform them into a bikini any time you want, and combine the benefits of the two. Trikinis are a bit trickier especially in terms of figure, since you really need to be flawless to be able to wear them without fear. Still they are included in the list of top popular and stylish trends of the season and will surely find their owners. Trend #4: Skirts and Fluttery Elements for the Bottom

of hips and skin. So have your skirt bottom for the best looks. Trend #5: Some Retro Inspiration

for this time. Generally, the swimwear options we saw were made of all the energising and sunny colours possible, absolutely fitting into the summer, beachy and jungle tropical mood. Still the timeless black and white are also in with the nice accents of white and the body-flattering effect of black. For these shades, polka dots and stripes remain as the primary design patterns. We do hope this list will help you make up your mind about the best wanna-have pieces and will help you find some good and useful additions to your summer wardrobe. Men’s swimwear trends summer holiday 2014

The following trend we would like to present is the one of the retro-inspired high waist swimwear. This is quite versatile and a great option for combining the high waist bottom with the variety of the tops including triangle, bandeau, and even experimental one-shoulder variants. This type of bottom will delicately shape your waist and hips, hiding the imperfections and give you a sassy look. My tip for wearing retro swimsuits, it is not a good idea for who are not that tall, because such bottoms will make them look even shorter. Trend #6: The revealing mesh suits The revealing mesh bikinis are not for every woman. This is for the girls who like to expose as much as possible of their lady parts. It’s a nice trick of seduction and sexual emancipation, so if you are not ashamed of your body or ashamed of exposing more of it, you must try at least once to wear a revealing bikini at the beach. This more intimate version of a bikini is available in many shapes and colors, and depending on the amount of skin you want to show, they can have mesh placed on the sides of your hips and breast and can go as far as being completely made of mash and expose everything. The last version is perfect for honeymooners but they must be worn in private for obvious reasons. Trend #7: Spectacular and Catchy Prints

This is the first and one of the most impressive variants we saw during the swimwear shows. The huge variety of the looks presented as mono suits ranged from halters and bandeaus to plunge and high-neck variants, which are rather comfy for some sports and physical exercises as well as for walks to the beach. The mono style swimsuits are a universal suggestion for any body type and preference offering their stylish and functional benefits to everyone. Another

creative

and

quite

unexpected

The next interesting trend we would like to introduce is the skirt-bottom or the fluttery details used for complementing the bottom. If you think this is no longer stylish and modern, this season proves just the opposite. In fact, this is a very suitable swimsuit style not only for having stylish looks, but for hiding the imperfections

Finally we would like to talk about the prints and the design patterns the designers opted

Nowadays very often men are much more fastidious than women. Many fashion trades are now presenting on the market plenty of different styles for every taste. Here are some of them, in which all men will look amazing on their next summer vacation. This summer they will be extremely fashionable. If you choose swimwear in vivid colours, you will be the most attractive person on the beach. The large variety will give the chance for all men to express their individuality and personal preferences. Choose the best one and make everyone turn around after you next summer.

SAY HELLO TO THE SHOES YOU WILL BE WEARING ALL SUMMER! We love a good heel, but we are always excited when comfortable footwear gets a moment in the spotlight. So when we saw this new style trot down the S/S 14, we knew we were in for a good season.

Trend #2: A Bit of Manly for the Total Charm

Trend #4: Waouh Wedges More summer inspired open variants, include cool and creative variants wedges for the most feminine and sweet silhouettes. Trend #5: Stylish Sandals

Lets Go on and introduce the hottest spring/ summer 2014 shoe trends. Like all the others, these trends also proved to be super diverse and multi-coloured, from time travelers to specific and extravagants styles. Trend #1: Luxurious and Shiny Shoes One of the most incredible and absolutely effective shoe trends that is awesome, manly and inspiring mixes and accentuates a woman’s charm and allure. For some of them the cute feminine and girly details predominate. Hits were ties and bows made of very delicate and cool fabrics.

This is the very trend we observe every seasons. They are your best friends at weddings and summer parties by the pool to dance till the end of the night. The essence of this trend lies in the silver, golden shine and jewels of the texture the shoes. We could also see some more extended versions with iridescent tones and transparencies.

HUA HIN TODAY, JUNE 2014

On the other hand we have explicit masculine inspirations for such footwear options. The material diversity used for this type of options includes variants from plastics to wood details. The colour palette is again diverse and catchy. Trend #3: Pointed Toe MaryJane Another alternative observed was the pointy details, accentuating the cool look and making a real mini-revolution in the world of fashion, by staying chic and classy even on flats.

prints, we can’t miss a touch of leopard prints, reptile skin hints are also in the list, presented with the green and blue tones. Colourful and printed shoes are eye-catching for the coming season, completely influenced by the World Cup taking place in Brazil and bringing one of the most pleasant and energising options. The suggested colours include coral, oceanic blue, classic red, yellow, sweet pink, as well as patterned options like checks made of black and white, and dots of black and blue. Don’t wait any longer. Hit town and discover the most fashionable shoes of spring/summer 2014. Start at the night market for comfy and classics and the Cicada Market for the trendy ones. It’s high time to start a new shopping session and to obtain a few more killer pairs!

Cute and comfy sandals carry the most diverse ethnic origins from ancient Greek to wild and free styles. Trend #6: Fantasy of Colours, Textures and Prints Finally, here comes the last shoe trend we would like to introduce. This is a combination of textures and prints with the classy silhouettes, introducing the most diverse and stunning shapes possible. From leather to velvet and knitted materials and from animal prints to floral designs, all can be found with these pieces. Continuing on animal

10 people in Business This Month INTERVIEW: Mury, General Manager of in History Jacque Centara Grand Hua Hin Resort & Spa Tell us few things about your background.

I studied in Lausanne in one of the best hotel schools of the world. Then I was few years as a trainer, and then instructor for 3 years. Then as the school asked more and more to teach in English I had to go the USA to learn English and that’s where I went and I never came back to Switzerland.

I work basically 12 years in the States, 20 years in Thailand, 1 year in Malaysia and 1 year in Switzerland. I always worked in England 2 years the same business. I never changed and I am very happy I didn’t do. The very first time in 1985 I was transferred from the Regent in Albuquerque in New Mexico to the 4 Seasons Hotel in Bangkok where I was food and beverage director. Then I went back to America and I moved to Meridien where they transferred me to London for a few years. They noticed that I have been working in Bangkok so they transferred me back to Bangkok. Practically since 1993 I always stayed in Bangkok but mostly Thailand. I am a cosmopolitan person but limited to the USA and Thailand and of course my home country Switzerland. I worked many years in Bangkok Regent, Meridien, Dusit Princess and then I worked 9 years for Centara in Koh Samui and now 5 years here in Hua Hin for Sofitel and Centara. I am a Centara and a Resort specialist.

How Hua Hin compare to other places in Thailand?

Hua Hin is very unique. I cannot compare it to Bangkok maybe more to Samui. Samui is more a foreigner destination just because is so far from Bangkok. Samui is a young destination and offers better beaches but I believe that Hua Hin, the city of the Royal family and a city so full history, is a treasured destination for Thai people and it is a golf paradise and a beach city. I believe slowly but surely it will become an attraction park destination and it soon will be the Disney world of Thailand if the developments go on the way it should be. I haven’t been much to Pattaya but I think it doesn’t compare at all, it is a totally different market. The history of Hua Hin and being the 1st resort town in Thailand is the huge advantage for this destination.

Tell Us about The Centara Grand Hua Hin Resort & Villas

This hotel was the first Resort in Thailand; it was commissioned by the Royal family 91 years ago. The history is amazing. The King’s Palace being too small and the Royal family had to enlarge its possibilities of accommodation that’s how the hotel was started. Then become the railway hotel and was bought by Central group in 1985 as a joint venture with Accor.

It is one of the two hotels the most referred I could say in the country. It was managed by Sofitel until recently but it was always owned by Centara with the majority of the hotel shares.

What about the Centara Gardens?

Mostly trees have been here more than 100 years but in the storm last November we lost some of them. If we lose one tree we plant another one. We are famous for these sculptured bushes in the garden that look like animals. The gardens are part of the image of Centara Hua Hin.

Have You Had Mentors in your life and how these people make an impact?

Senator Robert Kennedy Assassinated 1968

HUA HIN TODAY, JUNE 2014

There are actually three important personalities. The first one was a very meticulous person Bill Nasikas from the Stanford Court who taught me the following: “The ever present menace of Mediocrity calls for internal vigilance”. Meaning if you are not attentive every minute your business might run away.

He was a very successful man; we had a 400 room Hotel with 95% occupancy all year long.

I will also never forget either the lesson received by Mr. Georg Rafael who was very respectful for all the operating equipment. At one time I neglected the silver maintenance, then a Director of Regent International Hotel he pressed me on the importance or taking perfect care of the operating equipment, particularly the big 4, china, glass, silver and linen. I also developed great respect for Mr. Gerd Steeb, President from Centara Hotel Resort who helped and advice in difficult issues related to human resources who told me actually to put some water in my wine occasionally.

Is Team Building Important?

I came here and the team was already very good. Of course I motivate the team and in 5 years period people are leaving and coming. I keep believing very much if the team members no matter what position there are in, if there are not happy they cannot make our guests happy. This is probably what I believe the most. To make our guest happy I have to make the team happy. I always try to make them play together with team sports like football; if they work well together they will be happy. I never heard so many positive comments in any other hotel about the staff. We have a lot of activities. For example today we had a family lunch. Every team member can bring their families, wife, husband, children and grandparents. We have lunch, singing competitions and all the family from the hotel family is happy. Each staff member can stay one day a year as a guest when they have their birthday. They can sleep here, they can have breakfast here and also they can invite one person of their family. So this alone means a lot to them. We have a lot other activities for team building.

What core values and vision made your business successful?

We give to our members, to our staff a lot of importance only because we are expected to give to our guest more importance. Obviously we also need to ensure that the financial numbers are right because if there are not right we can’t give too much weight to the first value. We attach a lot of importance to details. The most difficult decision of all relates to the selection who is going to be in or not in the team and one of the toughest decision is when you have to decide who any long cannot be part of the team. When business is rough like when you have to downsize, close restaurants or limit your service is one of the most difficult decisions to take. When it is caused by circumstances not related to the hotel it is always very difficult and painful

Tell us about your Customers

This hotel has over 50 % returning guests all year long, in the winter we have returning long stay guests, some for over 4 months. It is a destination in itself, not only as Hua Hin but as Centara Grand Hua Hin. People enjoy the fact that there are recognised, we know exactly what they like. We are going back to details. Most of our customers are German, Thai, British and Scandinavians in winter. The Chinese also have increased by 10-15%.

Did the situation in Bangkok affect your business?

We were obviously affected but not as much as Bangkok. We had a few cancelations and we tried to manage with special promotions. We did not see too many problems in the beginning of the crisis. We now see a slowing down and we are working on marketing to fix this. The situation in Thailand did not help us to keep the same business level as last year.

How do you think Hua Hin Is developing?

I believe in Hua Hin I think it is going to be and it is already the number one destination for some of the 16 million people living in Bangkok. It has everything to offer; sea, golf and attractions parks. So I can only think positive. More people will come, more hotels will be built. The only danger, the only risk, is the lack of the structured developments. We all know there are some monstrosities in terms of buildings. The day this is monitored and controlled Hua Hin will be the number one place to go. It is got to be controlled development and it is going to be beautiful. As long the destination is a domestic destination maybe the airport is not so important but the potential of a high speed train will be fantastic.

Are you concerned about the infrastructure in Hua Hin growing so fast?

When I think about the hotel will not suffer from many infrastructure problems I can foresee like everywhere else some water problems. We almost have 5 months without rain. I am not knowledgeable about the electricity but I think that’s enough. A big problem is the access into Hua Hin. It is 2.5 hours by road from Bangkok but too many times longer than that. There is really no other way to come to Hua Hin. We have to build better roads. Access is key to Hua Hin.

What do you enjoy personally In Hua Hin?

Whenever I can, I go to Bangkok, but this is a joke. I like to exercise a lot; I walk, I jog, I read and of course I like swimming. I like to do 6 months outside exercise and six months swimming. I also like to go and eat outside. It is a city without stress.

A Jacque Mury Message?

I want tell the readers one thing; they selected a very good town to live in and there are fortunate to be in Hua Hin because it has everything including quietness and lack of stress. I wish they can stay long because the development will be good and I see how many foreigners are coming to retire in Hua Hin and that is perfect.

News 11 Many Problems To Be Solved Before ASEAN 2015 The Federation of Local Tourism Business of Thailand (FLTBT), the Association of Tourism Business in Hua Hin/Cha-Am and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) conducted a meeting on 8th May 2014 at Regent Cha-Am in Phetchaburi.

Chaired by Dr. Rungrot Sileungsawad from the Association of Tourism Business in Hua Hin/Cha-Am, the aim of this meeting was to encourage participants to discuss ways to solve major problems about tourism in Thailand. Among many speakers who gave a special presentation and joined group

discussions were the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Sport Mr. Khachon Weerajai, the Prachuap Khirikhan Governor, Mr. Weera Sriwattanatrakul and the Director of TAT, Mr. Somchai Chomphunoi. Mr. Khachon said that the Thai government had already coordinated with other ASEAN member countries for 600 million people and the eight registered professions which can work in any ASEAN countries once they have an ASEAN work permit. These professions include doctors, survey engineers, tourist guides, business entrepreneurs, hotel personnel, industrial and hotel accountants.

political conflicts which have been prolonged in Bangkok. However in the northern and southern parts of Thailand, many Thai and foreign visitors are enjoying their vacations.

When the political turmoil comes to an end, Thailand will enjoy a better situation, especially in tourism which yields a major income. However the current political conflict is not as bad as the economic crisis that took place in 1997.

In 2016, there will be many ASEAN people outside Thailand applying for a job here, especially Filipinos who are more fluent in English than Thais. Additionally labourers from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia will come to work in Thailand.

Mr. Weera added that, despite the political situation, Prachuap Khirikhan remains a major income source thanks to its natural wonders, beautiful beaches and mesmerising archeological sites. Additionally, the Province has officially opened the Singkhon checkpoint, allowing major businesses such as Tesco-Lotus, Home Pro, Thai property and five-star hotels to invest more in Hua Hin and other districts in the Province.

The advantage for Thailand is that resources for the tourism industry are abundant. However business people need to be wellprepared for internal problems, particularly

As the Governor of Prachuap Khirikhan, Mr. Weera said he was confident that the local economic growth of the Province would continue and expand more once

Thailand becomes a member of the ASEAN Community. The TAT Director also stressed that the TAT was promoting “green” zones in each region of northern, central, eastern and southern Thailand. This means the tourist sites have to take care of themselves in terms of prevention against pollution problems and physical damage for sustainable tourism. Realising how important the green zones are, 21 private companies have already signed an agreement to protect the areas the same as in other countries. In Thailand, major income from tourism depends on tourists’ use of local transport, local restaurants, local stores, staying at local hotels and participating in traditional social activities, said the TAT Director. If public and private sectors address these concerns and cooperatively work to promote tourism, Thailand will become number one for tourism development in ASEAN, concluded the TAT Director.

HUA HIN ASIA JAZZ 2014 “Keep Love & Music In Your Hearts” The setting was perfect. A calm, balmy evening on the sands with a backdrop of distant lightning, well-lit ships on the horizon, the sultry sounds of international jazz musicians AND all for free.

of Thai and foreign jazz lovers this was a concert which showed that live music and world class entertainment on the beach is really appreciated.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) supported local authorities in Hua Hin, Ignite Asia Co., Ltd. and the Centara Grand Beach Resort to stage this international jazz music event on the Hua Hin beach on Saturday, 10th May. International names on the program included The Dan Phillips Quartet with guitarist Dan Phillips from the USA, Richard Jackson, Yuki Makita, Mailow Motif from Singapore, Fried Pride from Japan and Banana Grooves from Lao PDR. Thai jazz artists included Koh Mr. Saxman, Pui Duangporn and the Vie Trio jazz band.

The introductory lyrics ‘summer time and the living is easy’ said it all. For a mixed audience

and Thai. A multilingual approach to both the audience and the performers added to the international focus of the evening. It’s really appreciated when everyone can learn about the performers and understand proceedings. However Khun Todd, (we didn’t get his Thai name), who spent some years living in New Zealand was a little disappointed he couldn’t find any Kiwis in the crowd. Richard Jackson, originally from the USA but now a resident of Singapore, accepted an invitation to perform an unaccompanied and impromptu vocal rendition of ‘days of wine & roses’. His message to the crowd “keep love and music in your hearts” added to the clear

Hua Hin Today had the opportunity to chat with the ‘Masters of Ceremony’, Khun Todd and Khun Ploy who were a big part of the event’s success. They were able to both introduce the performers and talk with them on stage in a combination of perfect English

statement of everyone on stage that Thailand is a welcoming and safe country for visitors. The music was a combination of very cool jazz and a fusion of rock and popular music to satisfy all tastes. For me the highlight was the Japanese duo ‘Fried Pride’ who gave us a jazzed-up version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ and the chance for audience participation, whistling along during the chorus of Stevie Wonder’s ‘I just called to say I love you.’ During a relatively cool evening with some relief from the summer heat, there was a lot of warmth in the air and smiles on faces at this fine concert that you really shouldn’t have missed!

WEBSTER UNIVERSITY GRADUATION DAY 2014 RECOGNISING INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVERS It’s easy to see why Webster University Thailand is eager to promote itself as a truly international university. At the 2013/2014 Graduation Day, graduates from eighteen different countries were amongst the 67 students receiving their Bachelor Degree and Masters diplomas. To add to the international flavour, participants entered the Hilton Hua Hin Ballroom to the refrain of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, an English patriotic song, before standing to the Thai and USA National anthems.

Rector Ratish Thakur welcomed participants including the Webster academic staff and the families and friends of graduates. The transformation from freshman to graduates was now complete with the fulfillment of both Thai and USA educational requisites. The Guest of Honour, Mr Nopporn Supipat, described his own personal journey from being a youthful speculator on the stock market and innovator in the energy sector, then experiencing financial disaster brought on by world monetary collapse. Mr Supipat is now enjoying success once again as the founder and Chairman of Wind Energy Holdings, the largest operators of wind powered energy plants (wind farms) in South East Asia. His message was that success depends on knowing yourself, finding out your passions in life and using all your personal energy without compromise. His personal admission was that, contrary to his introduction by Rector Thakur, he did

not complete his tertiary education at Miami University. He failed to complete one unit in Political Science, a subject he could not enjoy. No real regrets, but not completing something started goes against his personal ethic. After the formal presentation of the diplomas and conferral of degrees, the student representative spoke about the uncertainty of the future for graduates facing the world outside academic life with encouragement

in moving forward. These sentiments were made by Mariel Anne Layosa Pandaan, an International Relations Double Major from the Philippines. Prior to the Graduation Dinner, everyone joined together in congratulating the graduates with many very proud family members taking photos which are sure to grace households around the world. A very memorable day for those recognising the endeavors of these tertiary achievers.

14 GOLF CONSIDER YOUR CADDIE

An understanding between golfers and caddies in Thailand can make the difference between a golfing round being good, bad or indifferent. It’s worth taking the time to consider how to improve this relationship. Here are some tips we hope will help. First the Golden Rule! Always treat your caddie with respect and good humour.

When you arrive at the Golf Course a Course Controller and caddies meet your vehicle. A caddie is then assigned and takes control of your bag and clubs. Find out your caddie’s name and introduce yourself before the start of play. Consider buying your caddie a drink when you call into a refreshment station. Getting on well with your caddie may improve your play and will make the Round even more enjoyable! Your Caddie’s Advice Advice may include the best line for the shot, distances, how to avoid trouble, club selection and most importantly reading the putt. The slope of the green is often hard to gauge without Course experience. Caddies are typically experienced, knowledgeable and friendly. Although their advice is usually very good; it is only an opinion - the decision is always yours! Figure out early your caddie’s ability to read the greens. Perhaps accept the early reads and see how accurate they are. If the reads are consistently off, laugh about it and make a mental note to rely more on your own judgment for the rest of the round. Each caddie’s knowledge of english language varies. Please don’t get upset about any misunderstandings, suspect advice or if you are just having a bad day! If your caddie becomes quiet and withdrawn you may need to ‘lighten up’!

About The Rules First, Rule 6-1 specifies that, “the player and his caddie are responsible for knowing the Rules”. This means that you incur a penalty if your caddie breaks the Rules. However be aware that a caddie’s knowledge of the Rules of Golf may be limited (perhaps because they have learnt from golfers!). Together with your marker, you decide where to drop the ball and when to apply penalty strokes. If in doubt check with your marker, don’t just believe the caddies they may encourage an illegal ‘free drop’. As long as you authorise the caddie to mark, pick up and replace the ball on the green, this is OK. You’ll never see this happen in professional competitions because if a mistake is made, it could result in a costly penalty. The caddie is likely to want to mark your card (up to your group!). However if you are in competition mode the score recorded and signed for is your responsibility. Caddies have been known to be ‘helpful’ by underscoring, be careful. Another possible penalty relates to protection from the elements when a stroke is being played. An umbrella can be held over a player for protection from rain or shine during preparation but not during the stroke. Tipping – How Much? A frequently asked question by inexperienced golfers is how much should I tip? Of course the only real answer is; up to you! The local etiquette is that a ‘par’ tip is the same amount as the caddie fee, typically around 300 THB. More is always acceptable however too

much means that you are setting a precedent that other golfer may not appreciate. ‘A cheap Charley’ will not win the respect of either caddies or playing partners. Don’t hand over a 1,000 THB note and expect the caddie to have change; plan ahead. Good Caddies / Poor Caddies Many golf courses have a system for golfers to provide feedback by returning a rating of the caddie after the game, please take this seriously. If caddies need further training or have some deficiencies, the course management needs to know. A false rating could result in undeserved penalties or for that matter rewards for being cute (na laak) rather than being a good caddie. Just be honest and real!

Some Thai Words To Use On The Golf Course Followed by Khrap (men) or Kha (ladies) What is Your Name? khun chuu a-rai? My Name is ……… phom chuu ……… Go Left bpai leow sai Go Right bpai leow kwaa Go Straight tonk bpai or tonk-tonk Go into the water tok naam Go into the sand (bunker) tok sai Iron lek Wood mai Joking poot len Stop yoot Help! chuay duay!

It’s a rare event but there have been justifiable requests from golfers for a caddie change mid round. This would need to be a serious incident or unacceptable behaviour. In extreme circumstances go ahead and ask the course controllers. There have been reports made by caddies when a golfer’s bad behaviour has justified suspension from the Golf Course and Club Membership. Our congratulations to the caddie for being assertive and to the Course management for their supportive response. One Request To Caddies! If your golfer is having a bad round and still smiling, so should you. It wasn’t his fault that you made a somewhat foolish side-bet with the other caddies before he showed the day’s form!

SCHWARTZEL AND KIRADECH ADD STAR POWER TO CHIANG MAI GOLF CLASSIC Former Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel and reigning Asian Tour number one Kiradech Aphibarnrat will lend their star credentials at the Chiangmai Golf Classic in July. Title holder Scott Hend of Australia and Korean star K.T. Kim, a multiple winner in Japan, have also confirmed their participation in the prestigious US$750,000 full-field Asian Tour tournament at the Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai from July 3-6. The powerful quartet will join US PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner of the United States who was earlier announced as the first marquee name for the Chiangmai Golf Classic, which was successfully launched in the northern city of Chiangmai last season. Chiangmai’s Governor Wichien Puthiwinyoo

said: “We are honoured to host the Chiangmai Golf Classic on the Asian Tour for the second time. We are delighted that four more worldclass stars have confirmed their participation in the Chiangmai Golf Classic. With the inclusion of Charl Schwartzel, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Scott Hend and K.T. Kim, along with Jason Dufner, golf fans in Thailand and television viewers from around the world will be treated to a great tournament.” Schwartzel, the world number 18 said: “I am looking forward to my first appearance at the Chiangmai Golf Classic. I have enjoyed some success in Thailand in the past and it would be fantastic if I can produce my best golf once again to secure my second victory in the country which I truly enjoy visiting. The exciting talents of Kiradech, who became the third Thai player to win the prestigious Asian Tour Order of Merit title last year, will be on full display once more at the Chiangmai Golf Classic. Last year, the long-hitting Thai finished tied fifth at the Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai. “I am looking forward to playing in Chiangmai again. I played pretty well in the inaugural tournament and I hope to put on another good showing in front of my fans.” said Kiradech, who finished fourth in the recent CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters. The powerful Hend is looking forward to a return to the Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai, which served up one of three victories for him last season en route to finishing second on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit behind Kiradech.

16 NEWS HOW CAN HUA HIN & CHA-AM CONTINUE TO GROW?

Some New Ideas Needed; Thoughts By a Leading Property Developer Srettha Thavisin, the President of Sansiri, a very prominent Thailand land and property development Company was recently quoted in ‘THE NATION’ offering some thoughts about the growth of Hua Hin and Cha- Am into the future. He’s what he had to say: “The town has been a holiday destination for me and my family since I was young. It usually took about six or seven hours to get there, driving from Bangkok and it had to be a well-prepared trip for all, since there were no 7-Elevens along the way back then. We usually thought of Hua Hin as a long holiday destination to justify the long drive, not a weekend getaway as it is today. Then the highway was expanded and trees lining it were cut down. Hotels and condominiums started popping up along the beach strip from the former Railway Hotel to Khao Takiab. Tourists started flocking to the town.

Where there are people, there are cars, but the town itself has only one main road separating the beachfront and the other side, connecting the market to beachfront plots, unlike Pattaya, which has a few roads running parallel to the main one. Hua Hin’s main road used to have one lane for each side. Now it has been expanded to accommodate two lanes of traffic each way, but it is still not enough.

If you have been to Hua Hin during big holiday periods you know what it is like. There are cars everywhere, and there is no way the town can grow bigger to accommodate them. Meanwhile we are seeing more hotels and condominiums opening on the opposite side of the beachfront, as land is getting very scarce and too expensive. This is because people still love Hua Hin for what it has been and what it still offers, and we all want a piece of it still. For a town like Hua Hin, it is obvious that if

we go on like this without any introduction of new ideas that people will embrace, it cannot. Seeing one big condominium development in the Cha-Am area that consists of more than 6,000 units currently under construction makes me wonder what will happen when it is complete. Will there be 6,000 more cars travelling to the town during Songkran period, and all going for dinner in the Hua Hin Night Market at the same time? Not only for Hua Hin but for other holiday hot spots, one of the ideas that I think might alleviate the pain for locals and visitors is another way for holiday lovers to get there without driving, as well as putting in place a more efficient city public-transport system. What if we had an updated and upgraded railway system that punctually commuted between Bangkok and Hua Hin or Pattaya? Would people still drive their own cars there if there were a tram or something that could take them around the town? Similar to many business ventures, a town cannot keep on growing unless new ideas are embraced by the people who live there, run it, and have a say in how cities as well as country are being developed and governed.”

THE BEST PLACE TO RETIRE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

‘Live And Invest Overseas’ Magazine compares Nha Trang Vietnam with Hua Hin Hua Hin, Thailand, and Nha Trang, Vietnam, two pretty, coastal towns in Southeast Asia, are also two of the most appealing choices in this part of the world for the would-be retiree. Both boast lovely beaches perfect for lazy afternoons; both are friendly and welcoming to foreigners; both are home to sizable populations of retirees and expats; and both offer the kinds of amenities that Western retirees typically look for, including good restaurants and nightlife, recreational opportunities, and an all-around comfortable standard of living for an affordable cost. Both towns are set in scenic areas, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure, and, in both places, the climate is comfortably tropical year-round. Yet, Hua Hin and Nha Trang are very different overseas retirement choices. Hua Hin is one of the few classic retirement havens in Southeast Asia, complete with golf courses, factory outlets, and gated communities. Located less than three hours south of Bangkok, Hua Hin has a population of 70,000. Foreigners make up approximately 15% of that population, and most of them are retired. With 12 golf courses in operation and another 3 under construction, this is definitely the place to go if you’re a golf enthusiast. Although Hua Hin isn’t the cheapest destination in Southeast Asia, the cost of living is reasonable by Western standards. The infrastructure is good, health care is modern and affordable, and the overall standard of living is excellent. Nha Trang’s cost of living is a major attraction. If you’re a budget-minded retiree with an interest in Asia, this town should be on your list. Nha Trang provides great value for money. In Hua Hin, a retired couple could enjoy a comfortable, uppermiddle-class life on a budget of about US$2,000 per month. A comparable life in Nha Trang would cost half that. Thailand offers formal retirement visa options,

HUA HIN TODAY, JUNE 2014

meaning that foreigners of modest means can arrange to live (legally) long-term in the country. Vietnam does not offer any such visa at this time, though staying long-term in this country is possible with an extendable tourist or business visa. Although both Hua Hin and Nha Trang are located in the tropics at close to the same latitude and the climate in both qualifies as comfortably tropical, Nha Trang sees more seasonal temperature variation than Hua Hin. During winter months, you might want a jacket or a sweater, something seldom required in Hua Hin. Here is a bottom line synopsis to help you see how these two top Asian choices compare: Land Ownership: Not an option in either location, though land leases in Thailand are renewable and transferable. Home Ownership: You can own your home or condo in Hua Hin. This is not currently an option in Nha Trang, though, as Vietnam is interested in attracting foreign capital, the relevant laws are expected to change. Cost of Living: Nha Trang is the winner hands down. A couple could live here comfortably on a budget of less than US$1,000 a month. Infrastructure: Hua Hin and Thailand in general boast a well-developed infrastructure, whereas the infrastructure in Nha Trang and in Vietnam in general is much more developing world. Health Care: Hua Hin is the undisputed winner here. If you have ongoing health issues, Nha Trang is probably not a good choice. Visas and Residency: Thailand has formal options for long-term and retirement visas. Vietnam’s visa situation is more fluid and creative, although an open-minded expat who wants to stay on a long-term basis should have no difficulty accomplishing that goal. Safety: The biggest risk in both places is traffic accidents. Scams are also a risk for the naive and unsuspecting in both towns. Petty crimes of opportunity are more likely in Nha Trang, though easily avoided by using common sense. Violent crime is rare in both locales. Climate: Warm and tropical with monsoon cycles. Winters are slightly cooler in Nha Trang. Organized Activities: Many clubs, teams, and events in Hua Hin. You make your own fun in Nha Trang. Nightlife: A tie. Lots of great choices in both places. Sounds like the winner in Hua Hin!

So our question is; where are these ideas? Here are some examples of what could be considered but solutions are really needed right now: H A way to travel through Cha-Am without navigating the main beach road intersection – an overpass, underpass or bypass is essential. For example, it’s not too hard to travel through Petchaburi City.

H A way to travel through Hua Hin without negotiating the CBD – once again, an overpass, underpass or bypass is essential. H A public transport system and way of commuting around the Cha-Am beach area which is much more than individual motorbike taxis, even circulating song taews would be a vast improvement. Mum and dad and the kids can’t get around on a motorbike taxi! H A way for walkers to use footpaths on the Cha-Am beach road. The current necessity to walk on a road congested with motorised traffic is both unpleasant and dangerous. Perhaps a significant part of the beach road could be a ‘walking street’? Every solution will have critics, costs and disruptions. However without a bold and visionary approach and real action the Cities can’t just keep growing.

THAILAND JET SKI CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND AT CHA-AM BEACH

For the third year Round Three of the 2014 Thailand Jet Ski Championship will be held

on the beach at Cha-Am on the weekend of the 7th and 8th June. The Event will be supported by the Cha-Am Municipality and the Petchaburi Provincial Government in support of the region’s tourism promotion strategy. The venue is ideal for both competitors and spectators with plenty of vantage points near the viewpoint and a dedicated racing area to allow the racers to give their best on the open waters. Water sports at the Cha-Am beach provide another focus for the city to showcase its

tourism potential. We’ve already had kite flying, banana boat racing, the bikini beach run and there’s more to come! The Jet Ski Championship features some outstanding world-class Thai professional racers with machines rated from 800 to 1,600 cc. It gives competitors their chance to compete for Thailand in the upcoming World Jet Ski Championship and for spectators a chance to see the thrills and spills of this exciting sport up close and personal.

ANOTHER WAY TO COOL DOWN Petchaburi’s River Playground

If you are looking for a way to escape the heat, an alternative to the beach and salt water, don’t have access to a swimming pool but long for a dip in some cooling fresh water, we have the answer! If you take the exit from the main Cha-Am to Bangkok highway west heading towards Kaeng Krachan National Park you’ll find yourself following a narrow canal or klong before veering right through a small village. After that you’ll come to a relatively new bridge crossing the Petchaburi River. Just drive over the bridge then immediately turn right. You will

come to a parking area with a small number of food and drink vendors and families sitting alongside the river under shading shelters. The distance from Cha-Am is around 15 kilometres. The river at this point is just below a gate regulating the amount of water released, so there is a clean, clear, gently flowing river, only waist deep and refreshingly cool, not cold. No floating debris or aquatic creatures to be concerned about and smooth pebbles are on the river bed. It’s easy to stand or wade, although maybe ‘flip flops’ if your feet are on the sensitive side.

Kids love it here. It’s a very user friendly picnic place where you can easily join in the aquatic fun or just keep as eye on the kids enjoying the stream. Seating mats, inner tubes or small plastic dinghies can be rented or bring your own inflatable may be the go. We spotted one green inflatable elephant (chang naam?) which really suited the surroundings. Foreigners are few and far between but that’s not an issue, the locals are very welcoming. w For some this will be a reminder of the local river ‘swimming hole’ enjoyed during their own childhood after school. We hope that

our photos will give you an appreciation of this very pleasant chill-out venue, well worth an afternoon’s drive to relive those innocent times.

20 NEWS Thailand Launches New 500 Baht Bank Note

Lampang Woman Set To Be First Thai In Space

A diminutive Lampang woman is set to go where no Thai has gone before after triumphing in a string of contests and camps to win a six-minute ride in space next year. Pirada Techavijit, 30, was at the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang in Bangkok to help the university open its Ionosphere and GNSS Data Centre and to encourage Thai youths to study science.

Thailand’s Central Bank has announced the launch of a new 500 Baht bank note. The new banknotes commenced circulation on Monday 12th May 2014 and will be much more difficult to forge, according to Bank of Thailand deputy governor, Thong-urai Limpiti. The new notes are the same size as the existing ones, although they will be more easily

distinguishable from other denominations, making it easier for the visually impaired to differentiate between notes. The old 500 Baht banknotes which have been used for more than 12 years can still be used and will remain in circulation for the next two years before being totally replaced with the new generation of bank notes.

A satellite engineer for the Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency for the past five years, Pirada began her journey into space after earning a specialised master’s degree in embedded systems from Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique in Toulouse, France. Upon returning home, she prepared aggressively to win the “Fans of Apollo 13” television contest, knowing the top three

finishers would qualify for a “trip into space” contest sponsored by Axe-brand deodorants and Space Exploration Corp. of the U.S. Pirada and her two male co-contestants trained with the Royal Thai Air Force and at a “space camp” in Florida, where she was selected as Thailand’s representative. She told the media she believes she was chosen because of her science and engineering education, which both Thai men lacked. She is just one of 62 people worldwide selected for the ride into space above the Lynx Mark II sub-orbital aircraft. The flight will reach a top altitude of 103km and will cut engines for six minutes to allow her to float weightlessly, take photos and possibly perform a science experiment. Pirada will next undergo training in the U.S. before making her flight.

Tour Bus Passengers Now teaches Asian kids survival tips Required To Wear Seat Belts

The Department of Land Transport is reminding tour bus passengers to fasten their seat belts when seated, with the enforcement date of a penalty looming near.

Department director-general Atsa Thairattanadilok Na Phuket has visited Mochit bus terminal in Bangkok to make sure stickers publicising the new regulation were visible at the bus terminal. According to Mr. Atsa, the department has required, since April 1, that seat belts be available for every seat of every tour bus. The department has asked the Transport Ministry to issue a ministerial regulation requiring that passengers must fasten their seat belts at all times while seated. The regulation will take effect on May 11th, and violators are subject to fines of no more than 5,000 THB. According to Mr. Atsa, some passengers refuse to wear their seat belts despite continued promotion of the benefits. Based on research conducted in Thailand, passengers who did not wear seat belts were 1.52 times

More than 800 people, including dozens of children, were among the victims of devastating floods that hit Thailand in 2011, affecting 65 of 77 provinces. In an effort to prevent further deaths, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural

Organisation (Unesco) hatched the idea of a free education mobile game app to spread the word. “In Thailand, everybody has a mobile phone, so why not convey our message through an application?” said Mr Ichiro Miyazawa, who oversaw development of “Sai Fah: The Flood Fighter”.

Department of Civil Aviation To Expand Regional Airports

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) plans to invest a billion baht in upgrading the old and constructing new regional airports under its supervision, as part of its preparation for the expansion of domestic routes after the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community next year.

Massage is a serious business in Thailand. With dozens of massage services available in both Hua Hin and Cha-Am, it’s a real feature of our streetscape. If you have the need, the only problem is which one to choose. We took the opportunity to talk with two business owners to get some personal insights. Although the businesses are within a few hundred metres of each other, they are not really in competition as these two ladies are mother and daughter! One of the reassurances a massage business can offer is certification from reputable training organisations. Rujira Changuan (Khun Tang) is the mum of the duo and proudly displays an impressive series of framed certificates from arguably the original and best. Bangkok’s Wat Phra Chetuphon, or “Wat Po”, is well known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, as well as being Thailand’s first “open” University. Wat Po Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School was opened in 1955 inside Wat Po and is acknowledged worldwide. Khun Tang is very proud to have trained and then also contributed as an instructor at Wat Po. Commitment to age-old Thai massage principles is the basis of the business. Regardless of the background of incoming staff, Khun Tang insists on instilling her personal ‘touch’ and instruction before allowing any ‘hands on’. Herbal House Spa and Massage offers many options including the use of traditional medicinal Thai herbs. She is eager to maintain this traditional focus to both the services provided but also the ambience of the premises. She refers to this as ‘old house’ but really traditional rather than just old. Another source of pride for Khun Tang is the achievements of her three children. The eldest daughter is a lawyer teaching at a Bangkok university and the youngest son has a construction business. Kamonwan Wayunij (Khun Bee) is the one following her mother’s

footsteps; although she was heading for a different career path after completing a Master’s Degree in economics and business administration. After a short stint as a resort owner’s secretary, the option of being self-employed and living in a less stressful environment, meant a move to Hua Hin and then as the owner of Thai Thai Massage. The difference between this business and Mum’s down the road is not the standard of the services. Khun Bee has a modern approach and has given the premises her personal touch with a contemporary feel. She also is able to offer confident and fluent English language conversation. Mum is prompting her take on another language (perhaps Chinese or Russian) before too long. Khun Bee’s only complaint about business is that Mum is a very eager and seasoned overseas traveller. This means she has to manage both businesses when Mum takes off to Europe to get some more stamps in her passport. The two premises are situated at the entry to Khao Takiab, on opposite sides of the main road and near to the Cicada Market. Nearby resorts are a good source of business although about 30% of customers are Thai people from Bangkok; they have often heard about Khun Tang’s reputation. Location is always important and plans to expand to additional premises are being considered with perhaps a new marketing strategy, that’s Khun Bee’s job. Our advice……………. maybe a new logo to recognise the Wat Pho origins below?

In particular, Mr. Seree Jitsopha, Deputy Director General of the DCA, said his agency would develop Mae Sod Airport as a gateway between the kingdom and neighbouring Myanmar, saying the airport’s runway would be expanded from 1,600 metres to 2,100 metres. He said the DCA would spend 200 million baht to acquire land to build the airport’s temporary passenger lounge, boosting the capacity from 150 passengers to 250 passengers per hour. Mr. Seree said next year the DCA would request another 320 million baht budget to

construct a permanent lounge, enabling the Mae Sod Airport to receive a total of 350 passengers per hour. The airport is currently welcoming 100,000 travellers annually, and handling 10 flights daily. He said the DCA also plans to invest 225 million baht to expand Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport, doubling the airport’s capacity to handle aircraft from the current 3 to 6. The Deputy Director General, reports that the department has also purchased 920 rai of land worth 250 million baht as it plans to construct an airport in Betong District of Yala Province, adding that the passenger terminal would be erected and the runway developed once it receives the necessary budget next year. The department expects 100,000 passengers would visit the airport per year.

Egg Prices Increase Due To Hot Weather

According to the Commerce Ministry, the hot weather has caused many hens to lay a lower number of eggs, causing decreased egg supplies across the market.

The ministry announced that egg prices were continuously increasing. Number-3 sized eggs have been priced at 3.50 baht per pack, which is an increase from last month. Apart from that, the prices of number-0 size eggs, the largest egg size, have crept up to 4.30 baht per egg in May. This price adjustment is an increase of 40 satang since April. Meanwhile, the farmgate prices of chicken eggs have been adjusted to 3.20 baht per egg, which is an increase from the previous price at 2.60 baht. The shortage of eggs into the market was a result of hot weather, which

has caused many hens to lay a lower number of eggs. In May, there were only about 33 million eggs being distributed into the market. However, Thais consume an average of at least 34 million eggs per day nationwide. Needless to say, the supply of eggs is about a million eggs short in meeting the demands of consumers.

COUGHING THIS SUMMER? A change of seasons brings some different pathogens. The summer cough is one of them. And it isn’t one of those coughs which go away in a couple of days; some are suffering for a couple of weeks or even longer. There are many reasons for epidemics such as these, and most occur with the change of seasons, hot to cold, cold to wet and so forth, but with the vast majority, the common carrier of the bug is the human race. This time we can’t blame an innocent mosquito! We are the ones who spread our germs everywhere we go, exploding an aerosol of potentially debilitating diseases into the air, every time we cough. This is the commonest way of transferring the bugs, by what is called droplet infection. Every droplet is capable of carrying thousands of microbes and looking for another human to infect. The latest bout has been a form of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection. This is inflammation of the bronchus, that part of your breathing tube to the lungs before it splits to become the right and left bronchus. The medical name is therefore “Bronchitis”.

Infection and irritation of the breathing tubes is very common. The most usual predisposing cause is cigarette smoking! If you don’t believe that cigarette smoke is irritating, try letting cigarette smoke waft into your eyes and see how they will sting and water. Your Sinuses and Bronchi do just the same! Once the irritation begins, the mucosa becomes swollen, and it becomes easier for the germs to take a hold. With Bronchitis, it generally begins as a slight irritation deep in the back of your throat. There can be some soreness as well, even on swallowing. Unchecked this develops into a ‘productive’ cough, with loads of gunk being coughed up, which we refer to as ‘sputum’. If you have gone over a week and your cough is showing no sign of letting up then it really is time to line up with all the other coughers at the outpatients department. Just make sure you can describe the colour of your sputum! I should have mentioned that if you are a smoker, the chances of the cough lasting longer are much higher, as well as being more likely to catch the cough from someone else.

News 27 FINGERPRINT SCANS IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN to debut at Immigration ON “VISA RUNS” ONE ENTRY VIA to catch known criminals ONLY A LAND BORDER CROSSING Thai Immigration aims to begin scanning fingerprints of all foreigners arriving in the Kingdom by the end of the year under a project costing 342 million baht.

Border runs have been cut short due to the very recent change in rules regarding overland entry by Thai immigration. Foreigners entering Thailand via border posts at Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Malaysia without securing a prior visa will now be granted only 15 days of stay in the country as opposed to the previous Visa on Arrival, which was valid for 30 days.

“The budget has yet to be approved, but we hope to introduce fingerprint-scanning machines by the end of 2014,” according to Immigration Commissioner Pharnu Kerdlarpphon. The scanners, to be introduced at every immigration entry point in the country, are part of the bureau’s effort to prevent foreign criminals from entering Thailand, Lt Gen Pharnu explained. Fingerprint scanners were chosen over biometric passport scanners as they are better able to identify criminals who have officially changed their names and have passports under their new identities, Gen Pharnu said. “We are aware that some of our target groups, such as Russians and South Koreans, are issued biometric passports,” he explained. “But biometric passport scanners would not catch people travelling with new documents or those using fake passports. “You can change your name or your appearance, but you can’t change your fingerprints.”

According to a spokesman for the Thai Immigration Bureau, the new regulation was created to encourage foreigners to secure the proper visas in advance from a Royal Thai Embassy prior to their arrival. The new rule will also limit the amount of back-to-back visa runs being made by foreigners to extend their stay. The general recognized that scanning fingerprints would not flag any inbound foreigners unless they had a criminal record in Thailand or were wanted by Interpol. “But at least we will have a better system for collecting information on which foreigners enter Thailand, how often they enter and when,” he said. “Immigration queues will get longer, but this needs to be done. They already do it in other countries, such as Japan.”

ARTIST AGRRES TO REPAIR CHIANG RAI’S WHITE TEMPLE

Foreign tourists and expats in Thailand will reportedly no longer be able to continuously exit and then re-enter the kingdom via a land border crossing. Instead, foreign visitors will be restricted to a single entry into Thailand via a land border crossing. In other words, so-called “visa runs” or “border runs” e.g. to the nearby Cambodian border, as have been popular with long-stay “tourists” who effectively reside in Thailand for many years, will soon be a thing of the post. Visitors can only enter into Thailand via a land border once, after that they will be refused entry to the Kingdom and are advised to fly out and return with a visa obtained from a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in a neighbouring country or overseas. Non-Immigrant visa or tourist visa holders

with remaining entries on their visa will not be affected by this new regulation and may exit and enter Thailand as before. These new measures are targeting foreign visitors without a visa who are regularly entering and exiting the kingdom every 15 or 30 days as a way of extending their stay in Thailand. Under the new rules, visitors who leave and then try to come back immediately may be stopped and told they must first obtain a proper tourist or non-immigrant visa before returning. Officials at border points will use their discretion on a case-by-case basis. If a re-entry is made once or twice, a foreigner may be allowed to re-enter Thailand. But if he has done so multiple times, he may need to be interrogated. Foreigners who cannot convince officials they are tourists will be advised to apply for a proper Thai visa if they wish to remain in the country. Immigration officials recommend getting visas prior to arrival in Thailand, as they remind visitors that back-to-back short visas are not the proper way to extend a stay in the country on a long-term basis.

THAILAND IS STRIVING TO BECOME ASEAN MEDICAL EQUIPMENT HUB

After declaring Chiang Rai’s White Temple a total loss to be left in ruins, the 59-yearold artist’s mind was changed today after many locals and tourists poured out to visit the renowned, unique temple that occupies a special place of both spiritual and secular merit. Instead of abandoning his life’s work, the artist announced he’ll get back to work on Wat Rong Khun to repair the structure, sculptures and paintings damaged by the 6.0 magnitude quake. He estimated those repairs will take him at least two years to complete. Many

The Industry Ministry is planning to position Thailand as the production hub for medical equipment and health products in the ASEAN region, by 2020.

paintings cannot be repaired, he said. The pieces will have to be repainted completely. Wat Rong Khun is still open for visitors. Only the chapel will be closed due to its severe damage.

Industry Minister Witoon Simachokedee said the nation would achieve the feat by emphasising innovative products, and ensuring the production standard is at a global level of excellence. Prices must also be reasonable and competitive. Mr. Witoon also said the kingdom would in time relinquish its dependency on the more expensive imported supplies while creating opportunities for local industries to establish production networks on an international scale. Already the Industry Ministry has assigned the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) to initiate three special projects to engender a greater awareness of the nation’s medical equipment industry.

Minister Witoon said these projects started two years ago, claiming there’d been good progress during that time. He said, that additional promotion had been put in place this year, giving as examples a project that encourages the use of local materials to produce medical equipment and a move to amend various policies that hinder production.

THAILAND EMBRACES AUTO BIOFUELS

Thailand is increasingly taking to plantderived biofuels for automobiles, with government support measures encouraging carmakers to debut vehicles that can use this form of renewable energy. Daily consumption in the Southeast Asian nation surged 60% to 2.26 million litres in 2013. Automakers are rolling out offerings that can run on E85, a blend consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. Mazda began local output of E85-compatible Mazda3 subcompacts at the end of March. Honda offers E85-compatible versions of nearly all its mainstay vehicles, including the Civic. General Motors has begun launching autos that can burn E85, including the Chevrolet Captiva sport utility vehicle. The Thai government is offering subsidies for

biofuel and tax breaks for vehicles powered by it. E85 cost half as much as ordinary high-octane gasoline at the start of May. The excise tax stands at 30% for conventional automobiles, compared with just 22% for E85-compatible vehicles Thailand is a Southeast Asian leader in efforts to promote biofuels. It is ramping up production of sugar cane and cassava, raw materials for ethanol, thereby helping farmers. The government is also working to reduce dependence on gasoline, which is increasingly imported. Sales of regular gasoline that does not include biofuels for autos came to an effective end in January 2013. The Energy Ministry seeks to lift daily biofuel consumption in the country to 6 million litres by 2021 -- 2.7 times the 2013 level.

THAILAND AIMS AT PRODUCING 3 MILLION AUTOMOBILES A YEAR BY 2017

The Thailand Automotive Institute is aiming to achieve a production target of 3 million vehicles annually by 2017, as set by the Industry Ministry. The institute’s new Director Vichai Jirathiyuth made the declaration, adding he would also retain the institute’s main policy of pushing Thailand as the number one automobile producer among the ASEAN member countries. The Thailand Automotive Institute has projected the number of this year’s automobile production to reach 2.45 million units, a 10% decrease year-on-year, thanks to the ailing economy.

Mr. Vichai was confident that the nation would be able to maintain the number one position despite the presence of Indonesia, a competent rival in the region whose auto

industry has an expected growth of 15% this year. Thailand’s automobile sector this year is expected to grow at 12%. Mr. Vichai said, despite a modest projection the kingdom has a higher potential for auto production, while holding the advantage of having the Eco-Car Phase 2 Policy, the government’s campaign promoting the production of automobiles with low fuel consumption rates.

Director Vichai said currently Thailand ranks 9th in the world as an automobile producer and the 13th auto exporter. He said the current hurdles the institute is facing at the moment are the preparation for local SME operators related to auto production for the arrival of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

3 Spinach Spinach is a healthy and nutrient-rich food you should certainly include in your everyday diet. You may hate spinach, but it is a wonderful source of iron, folate, chlorophyll, Vitamin E, magnesium, Vitamin A, fiber, plant protein, and Vitamin C. Due to their antioxidant abilities, Vitamins C, E, and A are especially great for your skin.

4 Celery Another food to eat daily for perfect skin is celery. Many of us underestimate this veggie, but celery contains Vitamin K that keeps the blood circulation healthy and helps to reduce high blood pressure. This can reduce your stress level, and as you know stress can cause bad skin, migraines and even cancer. A great beauty food, papaya is low in fructose and is excellent for digestion. The antioxidant nutrients found in it, including Vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, are great at reducing inflammation and acne. Moreover, Vitamin C may also protect your skin against sun damage.

Celery also contains natural sodium, potassium and water, and can help to prevent

FIVE FOODS FOR A HEALTHIER HEART Oranges

Reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and the risk of heart failure

THE EVIDENCE: Oranges contain a chemist’s worth of balms for the heart. Their soluble fibre, pectin, acts like a giant sponge, sopping up cholesterol in food and blocking its absorption—just as a class of drugs called bile-acid seques-trants do. And the potassium in oranges helps counterbalance salt, keeping blood pressure under control. But wait; there’s more. New research reveals something even more startling: citrus pectin helps neutralise galectin-3, a protein that causes scarring of heart tissue, which leads to congestive heart failure—a condition that doctors often find difficult to treat. TRY to eat orange pulp and pith; both contain pectin. You’ll get more pectin in pulp-rich juice, but it’s better to eat your oranges whole.

part of a healthy diet, but it’s time to reach beyond the prebagged spinach. “Kale has everything you’d want in a superfood,” says Dr Joel Fuhrman, who helps patients reverse their cardiovascular disease with diet and exercise. Kale boasts a bumper crop of heart-healthy antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, folate, potassium and vitamin E. It’s also rich in lutein, an antioxidant that promotes eye health. Kale even contains glucoraphanin, an unusual compound that activates a special protective protein called Nrf2. “This protein creates a sort of teflon coating in your arteries that stops plaque from sticking,” says Fuhrman. TRY to look for fresh kale in the produce section of your supermarket. “Choose smaller bunches, as their leaves are more tender than those of larger bunches,” advises Prevention food editor Judy Davie. “Kale is tougher and more fibrous than spinach, so it takes longer to cook. Trim the stalks and then boil, steam or stir-fry the leaves. You can also cook it in stock.”.

THE EVIDENCE: Green is good. We all know that dark leafy greens are an essential

THE EVIDENCE: Research suggests that garlic acts much like ACE inhibitors, drugs that fight high blood pressure. This clever bulb suppresses angiotensin, an enzyme that constricts blood vessels. This effect is modest compared with that of medications, but garlic still seems to have a significant impact on the build-up of plaque. In three

5. Papaya Papaya is a wonderful fruit which has a rich history and numerous nutritional benefits. It is very low in calories (only 39 calories per 100 g!) and also contains no cholesterol. So if you are trying to lose weight, consider eating papaya every day to maximize its health benefits.

THE EVIDENCE: Any alcohol nudges up HDL, the ‘good’ cholesterol that fights plaque. “But it’s not about resveratrol [the phytochemical in the skin of red and purple grapes that benefits the heart]—you’d need to drink 16 bottles a day!” says John Folts, PhD, professor emeritus of cardiovascular medicine and nutrition. The effect is instead due to polyphenols, compounds that help keep blood vessels flexible and reduce the risk of unwanted clotting. But this news isn’t a green light to polish off an entire bottle. “Many studies show that drinking one to two serves of red wine a day is fine,” says

THE EVIDENCE: The omega-3 fats in fish are crucial for heart health, and sardines’ levels are among the highest. These healthy fats raise protective HDL cholesterol, lower harmful triglycerides, and reduce both inflammation and the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias. It’s inflammation that ultimately destabilises plaque, causing it to rupture and produce a heart-attack-inducing clot. Although you can find omega-3s in plant sources, such as flaxseed, the longchain omega-3s in fish are far more powerful. Last year, a large Danish study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed a 38% reduction in ischaemic heart disease among women who ate the most of these little fish.

32 Spa & Health Last month I was invited to go and try the Royal Rose Facial at the Intercontinental Resort and Spa and I loved every minute. It was exactly what I needed after so much sun and stress from work. Atmosphere The spa is full of soothing fragrances and quite tones to relax you immediately.

The Treatment The Royal Rose Facial is for all skin types. The treatment started with cleansing. My therapist wrapped my hair with a towel and began a thorough cleansing using cotton pads and sponges. She cleaned off all my make-up and then scrubbed my face. Every movement was so smooth and relaxing that you could easily fall asleep.

Then a gentle rose mask was applied to my face which smelt like Turkish Delight. The mask is so unbelievably soft and friendly to sensitive skins. The mask was applied for around 20 minutes and at the same time a head massage sent me to heaven. The Result When the eye pads came off, I felt really rather bouncy and my skin, although naked, looked clean, smooth and moisturised. Suppleness and softness was restored and my skin glowed with radiance. My experience I believe that this facial is one of the best, 60 minutes of pure indulgence. Certainly worth the money (2,800 THB). For Spa Booking, please call 032 616 999 or email spa@ichuahin.com

OVULATION AND PREGNACY PREVENTION This month, we will continue discussing pregnancy and focus on the ovulation calculator and birth control. We understand that this may be general for some people, but it still a subject that many people do not understand.

We will start with the ovulation cycle and calculator. In normal cases, the calculation is based on the menstrual cycle of 28 days for each cycle. Ovulation will usually be on the 14th or

the 12th – 16th day. The approximate surviving period of the oocyte is around 12-24 hours before the atresia folliculi event occurs which will happen when there is no fertilization.

For sperm, the approximate surviving period is around 2-3 days. It is suggested that those who want to have a child should have sexual relations during ovulation. To make it easier to understand, we would like to give this example. Assuming that the first day of menstruation is on 4th April, the ovulation period will be around 16th – 20th April. If the oocyte is fertilized on 20th April, the result would be detected about 6-8 days

Blood Test after the fertilization if tested by blood which would be around 28th April or about 14-21 days after the fertilization if tested by urine which would be around 4th – 11th May. However, we have to understand that these dates are just estimations and we cannot define the specific date in the calculation.

HUA HIN TODAY, JUNE 2014

One of the well-known methods for the gentlemen is to use a condom which in addition to preventing pregnancy also gives the benefit of preventing sexual diseases. For the ladies, there are intrauterine devices and the oral contraceptive (the use of a birth-control pill). Today we will be focusing on the use of birth-control pill. Typical birth-control pills are either the 21 pills type or the 28 pills type. Both these types focus on the adjustment of hormones. The small difference is that the 28 pills type has the additional 7 starchy pills to complement the 28 days period, which is suitable for people who tend to forget taking their pills. There also other benefits in taking birth-control pills. In addition to preventing pregnancy, it will help with skin problems such as acne, make the skin looks healthier or even help with the body figure a better look. The reason for this is that these pills will not only adjust hormones when a person has to little or

too much. The balance resulting solves problems caused by hormonal imbalance. This is the reason why some women take birth-control pills although there is no concern in preventing pregnancy. Another kind of birth-control pill is called Emergency Contraception (EC). Its use is only for emergencies for example when we forget to take the general birth-control pill for 2 consecutive days or the use in for an adverse event such as sexual assault. The EC package contains 2 pills per one package. The idea is that it must be taken within 72 hours after the sexual relationship. The first pill should be taken as soon as possible and the second pill should be taken 12 hours after you took the first pill. EC gives an approximate prevention percentage of 75% and if you can take the pills within 24 hours after the incident the prevention percentage will increase to 85%. But it is only for use in an emergency. It is stated on the drug’s label that these pills should not be taken more than 2 times per month as the side effects of taking this pills include the stimulation of cancer cells such as breast cancer, increase chance of extra-uterine pregnancy, and also problems with infertility. Usually, I would tell my patient that they should not take EC for more than 2 times within their lifetime because of the severe side effects from taking the pills in the long term, particularly with teenagers. Should you have any query or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact “Healthlab Medical Laboratory”; the blue building located next to PTT gas station.

34 OFF BEAT WORLD NEWS USA: Powdered Alcohol Off The Shelf

Powdered alcohol poised to hit US stores A US company says its new powdered alcohol product was approved by US regulators and poised to hit stores in coming months. Palcohol is made by an Arizona company called Lipsmark and made in six varieties of single-drink pouches.

reportedly in short supply. In response, the Cuban government has approved the sale of expired condoms. In 2012, when millions of condoms imported from China were set to expire, the government ruled that the expiration labels were incorrect and that they should be re-dated for 2014. The ensuing backlog pushed up the price of a condom from a few cents to about $1.30 (a day’s earnings for the average Cuban), and is the proximate cause for the current shortage. Cuban bloggers first started reporting the scarcity last month, when pharmacies in one central province began running out of the government-subsidized condoms. Now, the shortages have reached Havana suburbs (where Cubans apparently also frequently use condoms to smuggle cheap rum into nightclubs).

Drinkers can stir in simple water for a shot of rum or vodka, add cola or orange juice for a mixer or create a cocktail - eithera Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Margarita or Lemon Drop. The company said the product would be sold to people of legal drinking age and could even be sprinkled on food. “Think of Palcohol as liquor... just in powder form. It will be sold anywhere where liquor can be sold,” said the company, adding it will be available in the United States, as well as abroad and online. A patent for the mixture is pending. In response to consumer inquiries about whether the product could be snorted, the company described the askers as “goofballs” and said it would take a half cup of powder to equal one drink. “Don’t do it! It is not a responsible or smart way to use the product,” it urged.

Now, Cuba’s remarkable achievements in keeping HIV/AIDS rates low - admittedly by unethical means, at times - are now imperiled, not by a dearth of advanced medical treatment, but because of a scarcity of the most basic and inexpensive sexual health product. The volunteers fattened up the worms on plants grown inside the Moon Palace One biosphere at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the South China Morning Post reports. They had various preparations for eating the worms - using a bean sauce and other seasonings to make the dish as appealing as possible.

Villagers in west Sri Lanka have said they have been surprised and delighted by an unusual rainfall of small fish. The edible fish fell during a storm and are believed to have been lifted out of a river during a strong wind. Villagers in the district of Chilaw said they heard something heavy falling and found scores of fish with a total weight of 50kg (110lbs). It is not the first such incident in Sri Lanka - in 2012, a case of “prawn rain” was recorded in the south. Scientists say that “fish rain” usually occurs when swirling whirlwinds over relatively shallow water develops into waterspouts and sucks in almost anything in the water including fish, eels and even frogs. The marine life can be carried long distances by buffeting clouds even when the waterspout stops spinning.

EGYPT: Massive Necropolis With Some 50 Mummies Found

CUBA: Running Out of Condoms

A vast necropolis with some 50 mummies, including pharaonic royalty, has been discovered in Egypt’s famed Valley of the Kings near the temple city of Luxor.

Cubans have grown accustomed to shortages. From food staples to energy to toilet paper, basic goods regularly become unavailable due to the island’s isolation from key international markets. The newest item on Cuba’s list of dwindling commodities is condoms, which are now

Archaeologists, including experts from the University of Basel in Switzerland, found wooden sarcophagi, death masks and canopic jars used to store organs removed during the embalming process. The mummies included newborn babies. An examination of the inscriptions on the jars allowed them to identify more than 30 of the dead by name, including previously unknown

But other classic Stones numbers passed muster, including Street Fighting Man and You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

Powdered alcohol has already been approved for sale in Japan and some European countries.

The Australian Financial Review’s editor has since apologised to readers over the “unacceptable state” of the issue. Attempts to recall the early edition were unsuccessful.

Three researchers have been eating worms for 105 days, while living in a sealed laboratory in Beijing, to test whether astronauts could use them as their main source of protein.

The enduring rock band played in commercial capital Shanghai once previously, eight years ago, when several songs fell victim to the censor, including Brown Sugar.

“The immense necropolis contains the remains of mummies that could have been members of the royal family, in particular the sons of the Kings Tutmoses III and Tutmoses IV of the 18th dynasty,” which ruled from 1550-1292 BC, the Antiquities Ministry said.

The cover of a weekend edition of a usually rather conservative Australian publication was recently released with a series of copy mistakes that certainly raised eyebrows.

“It is an extreme one-off and we are going through our processes to make sure it does not happen again,” he said.

“About now we’d usually play something like Honky Tonk Woman ... but it’s been vetoed,” front man Mick Jagger said at the show. The song describes a “bar-room queen” who “tried to take me upstairs for a ride” and another woman who “blew my nose and then she blew my mind”.

However the product then lost federal approval, with some experts saying it could provide a serious health risk to those who consume it. A representative from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau said in an email to The Associated Press that the approvals were issued in error.

AUSTRALIA: Financial Review Newspaper Cover is a Hot EBay Item

The idea of feeding protein-rich mealworms to astronauts was apparently raised as early as 2009, but scientists at western space agencies worried they would be unappetising and lower astronaut morale. But researcher Hu Dawei says that throughout the current experiment the volunteers seemed “healthy and happy” on their worm diet. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has said edible insects could make a “promising alternative” to traditional protein sources. “It did take them some time to adapt,” Hu adds. “None of them had ever tried them as food before. Worms may look disgusting at first glance, but they are actually the cleanest and healthiest food source.” But one restaurant owner is more sceptical, saying: “Worms on the menu might put off some people who dreamed of being an astronaut.” The experiment’s results may be reviewed by China’s space authorities in the planning of future manned missions. China put its first man into space in 2003, and has plans to launch a space station by 2023.

Villagers say that the “fish rain shower” included creatures falling on the village green, roads and roofs. Some of the fish - each three to five inches (5cm-8cm) in length - were still alive and were put in buckets of water to eat later.

36 Pet Care FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS…

The essentials to know before welcoming a new family member to your home.

Before adopting a dog:

If you have just brought a new puppy home for the first time, it may be tempting to cuddle, spoil, and shower your adorable puppy with affection. But just as important as love and affection, is taking the time to train your puppy from a young age so that he can learn good behaviors that will stick with him for the rest of his life.

H Treats are earned, not given : It can be tempting to give a new puppy treat after treat for being so playful and loving. But a puppy will respond best to treats that are earned for good behaviour, such as chewing on chew toys instead of furniture or using the toilet successfully outdoors. This will teach your puppy early on that treats are a reward that can be earned through obedience, not bad behaviour. H Exchange toys with a treat: Your puppy should only have access to his toys at playtime. With overpopulations in shelters around the country, adopting a dog is one of the best things you can do to help this problem. But, before you go out and adopt a dog, there are some important steps you need to take and questions to ask yourself to make sure you are ready. These tips will help prepare you to step up as the pack leader from day one! • Take your family and children feelings about adopting a dog into consideration. • Are you honestly ready for the responsibility of a dog? • Figure out how well you can schedule your dog into your life. • Check out how dog-friendly your neighbourhood is. • Choose a dog with an energy level equal to or lower than your own. • Consider Fostering a Dog First. If you’re unsure of whether the new dog you’ve chosen is right for your family and lifestyle, consider fostering before making a commitment. Plus, fostering takes them out of the shelter and if you are armed with the proper information, you can help transition the dog from shelter life to home life. • Don’t overlook the senior dogs. Senior dogs need homes just as badly as the cute puppies. • Don’t make an emotional decision when choosing a dog. • Know what it means to be your dog’s pack leader. • Enjoy the Process of Adopting a Dog. Balanced dogs bring us calm, peace, joy, and love, as much as we bring them. So get started on the right foot and you can look forward to a lifetime of happiness and fulfillment with them.

10 Essential Puppy Training Tips

H Give treats while your puppy is eating : When your puppy is eating, place your hand into his food bowl to give him delicious treats.

H Stay consistent in training not to nip: Puppies are known to nip and chew on different items as they explore their environment.

H Train at the right time: Puppies are eager and willing to learn, especially with reward-based training. But make sure that you train your puppy in a short 5 minutes sessions before mealtime so that he has enough energy and is hungry enough to earn treats for obedience.

H A puppy is growing and developing on a day by day basis, so it may take him time to learn a number of basic commands. Start out slowly with 2 to 3 commands at a time. H Do not provide negative attention. Use positive reinforcement to train your puppy instead of scolding or yelling to prevent negative associations.

Discipline and punishment are not synonymous: Invest heavily in dog training, and there will be no need for punishment. It takes time and effort to see real improvement in your dog’s behavior. Don’t let your frustrations distract you from your goal to properly and successfully train your pet.

A dog is a dog: Treating a dog in a humanised manner is perhaps the cardinal sin dog lovers commit. Love your dog, but do not treat him as a baby. Only dogs that understand their role within a family unit are actually trainable. Dogs need boundaries: Follow Millan’s example, and set boundaries in your home. If your dog’s barking at company bothers you, make this a focal point of your training. If a dog’s presence in an off-limits room annoys you, focus on this aspect of the dog’s behaviour instead. Consistency is key: It is easy to let a dog get away with eating off your plate “just this once,” but in so doing, you are setting a dangerous precedent. How is the dog to know that tomorrow morning this is no longer acceptable behavior?

Get all family members on board: It takes a household to properly train a dog. You, your partner and all household members need to be on the same page when it comes to acceptable and unacceptable behavior. While there only is one pack leader, the other family members still are dominant to the dog, and they must treat their relationship with it as such.

Start today: It never is too early or too late to start working with a dog. Whether your canine companion is a puppy or a more mature dog, commit to start today and achieve with your dog what Millan refers to as “balance between people and dogs.”

Simple Methods to Teach Bite Inhibition

H Socialize from a young age. You can socialize your puppy through basic leash training on a walk down the street or at a park. This can be used to train your puppy to follow you instead of pulling on the leash and will also acclimate him to new people and other dogs.

Cesar Millan, better known as the The Dog Whisperer, is known for offering tried-and-true dog-training solutions to frustrated, struggling pet owners. Among his most helpful tips are the following 10 that are sure to have even new dog owners leading the pack in no time. This dog whisperer often meets pet owners who have failed to provide their dogs proper exercise. In his book, ‘A Member of the Family’, Millan explains that dog training becomes virtually impossible without a daily exercise routine. Check his website at CesarMillanInc. com.

Just like kids, dogs need a schedule: Like a temper tantrum-throwing toddler without structure in its life, a dog without a set schedule is bound to become irritable and act out. Leadership is the foundation of training: Dog training relies on the presence of one pack leader.

Half the battle takes place in your mind: You must have unwavering mental strength and confidence to gain the trust and respect of your dog during training sessions. Your dog can sense if you are uncertain or fear it, so you must control situations by maintaining the role

confine her for a few minutes until she calm. Then take her out and resume play.

3. Leave it, Drop, & Touch. Teaching your puppy cues that involve when and how to put their mouth on things, including when to release, is also very important. The Touch cue teaches your dog to put their nose on a person’s palm, which is a great way to allow a mouthy dog an appropriate outlet.

4. Tie Down. If your puppy gets really excited or you have children in your family, a tiedown can really help with this training. Put your puppy on a 4-6’ rope tied to something they cannot move. Then commence play, grooming, etc. If they begin to get to excited or to bite, you can get up and walk away and they are not able to follow. This is great for the puppies with little self-control or if your kids are nervous about the puppy biting

H Enroll in an obedience class. Taking at least one obedience class will help you to understand how to better communicate with your puppy in a positive way.

of an authoritative pack leader.

Bite inhibition should actually start when the puppy is still with its litter. Some of the first “manners” a pup will learn will be when they are playing with their littermates and dam. If they bite too hard, the other puppy will cry out or the mom will correct the pup.

This is just one reason why it’s important to leave puppies with their litter until at least 8 weeks, so they can start developing this social skill.

Once home, your puppy should start “bite training” immediately. The following tips are a great way to start. Contact a positive reinforcement trainer immediately if you are having trouble. This is one behaviour you do not want to allow to continue.

1. Hands are not toys. Never use your hands to play with your puppy. Instead of chasing your hand, have them chase a long tug toy that they can grab, with enough space for you to hold your hand out of puppy’s reach. A long toy you can hold at a safe distance is best for your pup

2. Time Outs. If you feel teeth on any body part at any time, let out a yelp and immediately stop all play. If your puppy releases your hand, praise him and continue the game. If your puppy is overly excited and will not let you get away (tries to bite more, grabs, jumps, etc.)
