Dear Michel Thank you for contacting us. We celebrated the news when Air Asia announced regular flights between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur. And we would welcome further still new routes to be available from Hua Hin airport.

However, this is not to be confused with the high speed rail project. This is a separate project, which is still yet to be finalised. It has been proposed that a station for the high speed train may be built in the north of Hua Hin, not far from the airport, although this is yet to be confirmed. Kind regards Editor Dear Beritt Thank you for contacting us.

Long Live The King The municipality of Hua Hin and Thais people will wear a yellow clothes, many made of Thai fabrics, or their government uniforms to pay respect by presenting gold and silver trays of flowers, incense and candles in front of the Klai Kangwon Palace. The crowd will sing the Royal Anthem and King Rama X’s Chalermprakiat song to demonstrate loyalty on his 67th birthday. We all thanks His Majesty for his beneficence towards the Thai people, by his generosity, his knowledge and his dedicated work towards improving the living standards of the Thai people. We pledge to be honest in our work and loyalty to our country. As Thai people we also swear to forever protect the monarchy.

HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

A flight to Utapao, for example, would be excellent and would make the Eastern Seaboard much more accessible to people living in Hua Hin.

Thailand’s street dog problem is well documented and you are not alone in feeling afraid or intimidated by packs of soi dogs, particularly when out running or cycling in Hua Hin.

Routes to Khon Kaen and Phuket have been rumoured in the past, but nothing officially confirmed.

There are some excellent animal welfare organisations in Hua Hin such as Rescue Paws in Khao Tao that work on rehoming and improving the welfare of street dogs in the area.

However, we do suspect that it is only a matter of time before more domestic and international flights are available from Hua Hin.

However, the volunteer organisations can only do so much. What is really needed is a government backed sterilisation program of soi dogs throughout Thailand.

Kind regards Editor. Dear Jens Thank you for your email. There are two major rail projects coming to Hua Hin. The first is the new dual track rail line which will be an upgrade to the existing single train line. It is this that you can see being constructed between Soi 88 and Soi 94.

But for whatever reason, probably financial, we’re not aware of any such programs being put in place in Thailand. There is the occasional sterilization of soi dogs carried out at the municipal level but never enough to make any kind of impact on the soi dog problem. You can find Rescue Paws on Facebook at: facebook. com/RescuePawsThailand/ Kind regards Editor

Regarding about the rumours that Hua Hin Today has changed ownership; well, that’s correct! There are lots of questions about what will happen next. As the General Manager and the founder, this is something I think about each day. I’m am always thinking about ways to keep Hua Hin Today Newspaper going on because it really belongs to the Hua Hin people after all. This includes the appearance of the newspaper in terms of modern advertising and being up to date with online news with variety and creative techniques. The new ownership team comes with strength, perseverance, confidence and experience in the print media business under the name of Media Expertise International (Thailand) Co. Ltd. The team has pledged to bring Hua Hin Today to the next level of information through the world of Digital 4.0’s technology. 4 Rare Turtles Laying Eggs on Koh Talu Island Officials of the Ao Siam National Park (ASNP) and Siam Marine Rehabilitation Foundation (SMRF) are delightful that a hawksbill sea turtle named “Mae (mother) Phrieng”, known because of a microchip implant, has returned to lay her eggs on Koh Talu Island beach, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Impressively, this is the second time this year that the hawksbill turtle has come to lay eggs. Mr. Patara Intarapiroj, head of the Ao Siam National Park stated, “this is spawning season when the hawksbill turtles come to spawn eggs on the beach at Ao Thian, Koh Talu Island, Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. Every year, park officials cooperate with SMRF to survey this area where hawksbills often lay eggs. During the survey, they saw signs of turtles on the beach. This enabled officials to know where spawning eggs would be and 156 eggs have been found.” Mr. Phaopipat charoenpak, secretary of SMRF said, “everyone feels overwhelmed to see a seriously endangered species of the turtle, the hawksbill, coming ashore to lay eggs. Officials of SMRF scanned the microchip implant on her and found information that her name is “Mae Phrieng” which laid 887 eggs during five visits last year.” From the officials’ observation, they found that the turtle spent one hour laying eggs before she returned to the sea. The officials moved the eggs from the egg cavity to ensure that they hatch safely. As of the late of May, hawksbills laid 157 eggs. Unfortunately officials could not check this information because they did not see the moment when the turtle was laying eggs. They expect that there will be more turtles

reconsider the marine protected area not only for sea turtles laying eggs, but also conservation in general. Recently, officials from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources surveyed the area of Laem Kum and Ta Wao beach and found that there are plentiful food sources for sea turtles. Hence, the officials requested for cooperation in refraining from entering certain part of beaches during the spawning season to prevent harming and stealing turtle eggs. An official also said, “To refrain from entering certain part of beaches does not affect tourists or visitors since Thap Sakae beach is 30 kilometres in length with only 2.8 kilometres closed to protect turtles spawning eggs.” coming to lay eggs in area of Koh Talu Island. Above all, it has been great that there have been are two turtles laying their eggs. The eggs are now moved to protection and they are expected to hatch in 60-65 days. After hatching, the baby turtles will be moved to the sea turtle nursery. They will be gently released into the sea when they are in a good health. Ms. Sureerat Taechootrakul, an environmental protection volunteer from Thap Sakae, called for all those involved in marine activities to protect the turtle spawning area on Ta Wao beach. As Ta Wao, including Thab Sakae and Lam Kum beach are located near land where the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand operates a coal fired power plant, it is inevitable there will be some jeopardy for turtles spawning eggs. He suggested that the relevant government agencies should

NONG TA TAM COMMUNITY WINS UN AWARD

Nong Ta Tam Subdistrict Administrative Organization is located in Pranburi district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. There are 12 villages with a hilly topography as well as basins. Agriculture is the main activity with villagers usually planting cash crops such as pineapple, coconut, and rubber trees. About 400 households did not have access to basic electricity, which greatly affected living standards. This was because these households are located on military safety land governed by the Thanarat infantry camp. They are not allowed to have electricity posts to provide electricity to the households. This issue has now been solved in an efficient and responsible way with every household able to access electricity from solar energy for pumping water and other uses. Mr. Montri Chuewongsakul, chief executive of the Nong ta tam SAO, said villagers in Ban Wang Won had long suffered from the problem of electricity scarcity. When the issue was raised with the administration, a budget was allocated for the project called ‘Self-reliant Solar Energy Community.’ The project also provided knowledge about solar energy to villagers. They learnt how to generate electricity from solar energy, using solar panels correctly and how to fix solar panels when they are out of order or broken. Before winning the award from UNPSA, Nong Ta Tam was second runner-up at a national level with an award of 3 million THB spent on purchasing solar energy equipment such as solar panels and batteries. “Since Nong Ta Tam created the solar energy system, villagers feel much better.” he said. “Not only do they use solar energy to improve daily life, but they also use it to support their incomes in the long term. This alternative energy source helps villagers to decrease monthly electrical bill,” he added. Mr. Montri said that “solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity. If any places in Thailand are facing the same problem, they can take learn from this initiative to solve their problems.”

6 A Brief History of Muay Thai and Why It’s Popular Today Developed hundreds of years ago and modernized over the last one hundred years, Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a combat-style sport known for its impressive power. Muay Thai historically referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” involves a unique combination of elbows, punches, kicks, and knees as well as an intense concentration in order to anticipate your opponent’s moves. This amazing orchestra of movement has proven to be effective and dates back to as early as 1238 (on the Buddhist calendar) when the first Thai military group was formed in the city of Sukhothai. Perhaps the most well-known recording of Muay Thai in history is that of the legendary Nai Khanom Dtom, who was captured during conflicts with Burma in 1774. While protecting the ancient city of Ayutthaya, Nai Khanom Dtom, along with thousands of others, was taken to the Burmese city of Rangoon and ordered to fight by the Burmese King during a celebration. Even with his bare hands, he can fell nine or ten opponent s. But his Lord was incompetent and lost t he country to the enemy. If he had been any good, there was no way the City of Ayu tthaya would ever have fallen“. By winning h is freedom and fighting for the honor of his country, Dtom became known as the Father of Muay Thai and is looked upon with great respect. The Thai military has fostered the art of Muay Thai for hundreds of years and train their bodies as weapons. In the early 1920s, the martial art was codified and introduced as the National sport of Thailand. Rules and regulations were put into place and gloves replaced the rope bindings. Since then, Muay Thai has become a way of life for both men and women, some learning from the early age of six.

According to the legend, Dtom defeated the Burmese boxing champion in a fluid whirl of punches, elbows, kicks, and knees. In absolute disbelief, the referee claimed the win wasn’t bona fide due to Dtom’s use of black magic during the Wai Kru which ultimately distracted his opponent and resulted in Dtom’s win by knock out. One after the other, King Mangra sent out nine more fighters in order to defeat Dtom. Each fighter was attacked with impressive skill and power, falling one after the other until Nai Khanom Dtom was the undefeated champion of the night. Impressed by his abilities, King Mangra granted freedom to Dtom and all others that had been captured, stating: “Every part of the Siamese is blessed with venom.

As this impressive form of martial art becomes more and more popular around the world, professional athletes agree that Muay Thai is an e ssential part of being a skilled fighter. Thai boxing has received provisional acceptance as an Olympic sport, gaining the global recognition it so deserves. Not only doe s the sport teach practitioners the art of using their limbs in one of the most effective forms of close-combat self-defense, but it brings people together through resp ect and admiration. There is also a spiritual and meditative aspect to the discipline as Muay Thai fights begin with the wai khru ram muay, a traditional dance where boxers invoke a spiritual force to protect them durin g rounds. Furthermore, the wai khru is a way of showing respect to the trainers and families of the fighter.

A balanced combination of mind, body, and spirit is an essential part of training as a Muay Thai fighter. In addition to enhancing the body, the sport promotes the discipline of the mind and em otional attitude of the athlete. There is a growing number of camps and gyms around the world as Thai boxing becomes more and more known. Recreational practitioners are turning to the sport to enhance their level of fitness. With both aerobic and anaerobic workouts, Muay Thai promotes an incredible level of fitness making it not only the best martial art but the ultimate form of exercise.

Mr. Jirawat Pramani, Permanent Secretary of Hua Hin Municipality together with Mr. Sungkhetp Chaemjamrat, Head of Education, Religion and Culture and other staffs participated in the inspection of lunches being served in schools around Hua Hin. According to the Department of Local Administration, educational institutions must comply with the food and health guidelines regarding supplies and accounting in order to avoid mishandling of each school’s food budget which has happened in the past. School’s kitchen department should also declare the food items and the amount of ingredients used in preparing lunch each day. “These inspections will be done regularly by the assigned personnel and the students’ diet must be monitored closely,” Mr. Sungkhetp said. “Meals served in schools should comply with standard nutritional requirements and must be displayed on the food daily board,” he added.

The evening saw a huge a fellowship dinner with the dress code being Southern Thai. There was excellent entertainment on stage and a superb Chinese style multi course meal. Sunday sessions, before the long return journey included Public Image and membership - new and retention. A good eventful weekend with many useful learning points drawn out, that will

enable the club to function and perform even more efficiently during the upcoming 12 months. President Brian Anderson said ‘’The DTA was another great annual Rotary event organized by D3330, and it was impressive that RCRHH had a high turnout of 10

members joining the event with nearly 20% of our club attending. We met our incoming DG Sakon and current DG Lt Gen Kanit and the training sessions were informative while the camaraderie soared while reuniting our old and new friends in the district.’’

After the autopsy, vets found no unusual foreign objects inside the stomach or in the abdomen that might have been the cause of death. Mr. Jakarin Saithong, a local fisherman says it almost took them 1 hour to drag in the whale to the shore. The Bruda whale is considered a very rare marine mammal.

Whales inhabit water around Ban Laem and eastern part of the gulf where they sometimes come face to face with fishermen and tourists. Immigration Police Repeat Offender Finally Caught focus on LawBy Hua Hin Train Police breaking Foreigners

Thai Immigration Police Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Sompong Chingdoung on Friday highlighted four recent cases to illustrate the agency’s success against law-breaking foreigners. In the first case, British national Reece Blain - wanted by UK authorities on charges related to Class A drugs trafficking - was arrested recently outside the British Embassy in Bangkok. His Thai visa was revoked while pending an extradition to face legal actions in his home country. In the second case, South Korean national Jaehee Cho – who is wanted in his home country for organising online gambling and money laundering and fled to Thailand in April - was nabbed this week after the South Korean Embassy last month urged Thai police to arrest and extradite him. In the third case, 26-year-old Iranian Kashayar Kharazmi was arrested as he was working as a

music DJ at a club in Bangkok’s RCA (Royal City Avenue) night entertainment area for overstaying the visa and working in Thailand without permission. In the fourth case, police arrested seven Chinese women on Thursday night as they were working (entertaining Chinese customers and drinking alcohol with them) at a karaoke bar in Soi Ratchadapisek 18 in Bangkok’s Huai Kwang district. It was reported that a service costing Bt5,000 per session - of which Bt 3,000 went to the woman who performed the service and Bt2,000 went to the bar owner. The seven women were able to present their passports to police with a tourist visa but failed to present work permits. They and the Thai bar owner who was identified as Hongman Wang, 51, will face legal action. Source: The Nation.

Detective police officers and the Hua Hin Railway Police, have coordinated the arrest of Mr. Prayad Dejsamran, 66 years old at Hua Hin Railway Station. Prior to the arrest, local police received numerous complaints from passengers onboard trains traveling south regarding robbery and snatching of jewelries and handbags. The police have stepped up the investigation and set up a surveillance team. On the morning of the incident, at around 03:00 a.m. the suspect snatched a gold necklace weighing 1 Baht (14.7 grams) from a woman passenger on a train bound from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok. The suspect then jumped off the train while it was about to leave Hua Hin railway station. Mr.Prayad sold the necklace in a local gold shop in Hua

Hin for the amount of 18,000 Baht. The police were able to trace the incident from a nearby CCTV and finally caught up with the suspect. During the investigation, Mr. Prayad confessed that he regularly sleeps in the front porch of Prachuap Khiri Khan City, (opposite the police station) and waited ‘til about 01:00 – 03:00 a.m. He will then buy a ticket at Prachuap Railway Station and board the train heading south. During the crime, he wears a cap to conceal his face and often chooses an elderly woman as his victim who’s wearing gold necklace. He would sometimes snatch their handbags while they’re sleeping. After the robbery he then jumped off from the moving train. Previously, the accused has committed the same crime more

than 30 times around the Prachuap province. In April 2019 alone, he committed 7 robberies. The money he got from the stolen goods was used to support his gambling habits. Mr. Prayad has shown neither remorse nor signs of contrition during the investigation and said that he’s already been imprisoned 3 times for multiple theft and robbery charges. He had just been recently released from jail and not knowing what to do for a living, he then decided to go back to his old career as a professional thief. The police officer has notified all the victims that has been robbed and requesting them to come and identify the suspect at Hua Hin Police Station.

11 Thailand Retailers Move to Be Free From Plastic Bags Central Group has vowed to stop automatically giving out plastic bags to their customers at its department stores across Thailand. That’s the key message behind the group’s newly launched “Central Love the Earth ‘Say No to Plastic Bags’” campaign that will start on Jun 5, to coincide with World Environment Day. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Nicolo Galante, chief executive of Central Retail Corporation, who said Central aims to become Thailand’s first plastic bag-free retailer by the end of 2019, cutting more than 150 million plastic bags in the process.

The campaign will cover all Central Department Stores, Zen, Robinson, Supersports, B2S, OfficeMate, CMG stores, Power Buy, Thai Watsadu, Baan & Beyond and Auto 1. Customers who say no to plastic bags when shopping at Central and Zen will be provided with paper bags and receive up to 40 “The 1 Card” points and 10 points at other participating stores. Meanwhile, Central Food Hall, Tops Supermarket, Tops Superstore, Tops Daily

and Matsumoto Kiyoshi will still provide plastic bags to shoppers, except on Tuesdays and the fourth of every month. Eight “The 1 Card” points will be rewarded for those who bring their own tote bags, while free paper boxes will be available to provide convenience to customers. Family Mart will also not give out plastic bags on the fourth of every month. However, three branches of the convenience store will stop giving out single-use plastic bags completely—these include ones at Mahidol University, Ministry of Health and Central Chaengwattana. Ten more branches are expected to completely forgo plastic bags this year. Thailand is the world’s sixth largest contributor to ocean waste, generating almost 2 million tonnes of plastic waste or 200 billion plastic bags each year. In June 2017, Thailand pledged at an international forum to reduce plastic use, with Thai delegates admitting that waste mismanagement was the major cause of the country’s poor record. As a result, the Thai government has included waste management in its 20-year national strategy. National parks and many public hospitals around the country ban the use of plastic bags, while the government has teamed up with retailers to help reduce plastic bag distribution to consumers. Tesco Lotus, Villa Market, Big C, MaxValu, Jiffy, Robinson, Foodland, Makro and Home Pro among others have all pledged their commitment to the agreement, launching their own initiatives to tackle plastic waste, which are mostly “voluntary” campaigns— an effort that may not be strong enough to tackle this environmental issue.

Toon – On the Road Again, Running for Charity

Artiwara (Toon) Kongmalai is one of Thailand’s most popular rock star and celebrity. He fronts the band ‘Bodyslam’. He’s also become somewhat of an inspirational fund-raiser, principally running to raise awareness of Thailand’s health system and raise funds for smaller and poorer hospitals in different provinces. In 2017 he famously ran from from the southernmost to the northernmost tips, raising money for some of Thailand’s poorer hospitals – from Betong in Yala to Mae Sai in Chiang Rai in the north. The run covered a distance of 2,215 kilometres. It was an epic and inspirational marathon raising more than a Billion Baht and turning the rock star into a national treasure and philanthropist.

“With or without me in the future, the idea and purpose will stay with the Thai people forever.” The new program of running for charity has kicked off in the northeast on June 15-16. That will be followed by subsequent running events in the southern, northern, eastern and central regions later in 2020. Artiwara said the south-to-north run was as much a personal challenge as it was a charity event. “This time it won’t be a one man show.” “I realised that I could use my status as a singer to do good deeds for the country. I’m so grateful and thankful to those who always believed in me. I promise to keep doing this until the day I run out of energy” he added.

Criers often dress elaborately, by a tradition dating to the 18th century, in a red and gold robe, white breeches, black boots and a tricorne hat. July 5th of every year, is a National Holiday in Algeria commemorating Algeria’s independence from France on July 5th 1962. The Algerian economy became increasingly dependent on oil, leading to hardship when the price collapsed during the 1980s oil glut. Economic recession caused by the crash in world oil prices resulted in Algerian social unrest during the 1980s; by the end of the decade, Bendjedid introduced a multi-party system. Political parties developed, such as the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), a broad coalition of Muslim groups. July 9th: Independence Day of Argentina

the bagpipe did not originate in Scotland. Instead, it started in the Middle East and moved west with settlers. The first documented bagpipe is found on a Hittite slab at Eyuk, and we find a bagpipe in the third chapter of Daniel where the “symphonia” in Nebuchadnezzar’s band is believed to have been a bagpipe. The first of what we might recognize as a modern type bagpipe is from Roman times. July 29: National Lasagna Day

The Independence of Argentina was declared on July 9, 1816 by the Congress of Tucuman. The congressmen who were assembled in Tucuman declared the independence of the United Province of South America, which is still today one of the legal names of the Argentine Republic. The Federal League Provinces, at war with the United Provinces, were not allowed into the Congress. At the same time, several provinces from the Upper Peru that would later become part of present-day Bolivia, were represented at the Congress July 21st : The National Day of BelgiumThe National Holiday of Belgium celebrated on 21 July each year. It is one of ten public holidays in Belgium. The festival’s formal establishment dates to a law of 27 May 1890 and commemorates an event on 21 July 1831 in which Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg swore allegiance to the new Belgium constitution, thus becoming the nation’s first monarch. The king’s vow marked the start of the independent state of Belgium under a constitutional monarchy and parliament. July 26th: The Independence Day of Maldives

Lasagna, or lasagne, is one of the oldest types of pasta. Although its origin has many theories, most sources say the beloved pasta was initially made in the city of Naples, Italy. The traditional way lasagna is made involves pasta layers with layers of sauce. All the different regions in Italy have a special way of making the traditional dish and in all cases the lasagna is oven-bake

In line with the broader British policy of decolonisation on 26 July 1965 an agreement was signed on behalf of His Majesty the Sultan by Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan, prime minister, and on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen by Sir Michael Walker, British Ambassador designate to the Maldive Islands, which ended the British responsibility for the defence and external affairs of the Maldives. The islands thus achieved full political independence, with the ceremony taking place at the British High Commissioner’s Residence in Colombo. After this, the sultanate continued for another three years under Muhammad Fareed Didi, who declared himself King rather than Sultan.

15 Electric Vehicles on the Rise but Remain Unaffordable in Thailand

Two EV trends will develop in Southeast Asia. The first is new operators of EV taxi fleets, and the second is Electric Buses for public transport.” Justin Wu, head of Asia-Pacific for Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) says the electric vehicles (EVs) remain expensive and unaffordable for individual buyers in Thailand and ASEAN. Mr. Wu says countries in South East Asia have sales of roughly 12 million motorbikes annually, led by Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. BNEF forecasts prices of EVs,

such as cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles, will remain high for individual buyers in South East Asia, including Thailand. The global electric-vehicle fleet reached 5 million last year, according to BNEF, supported by 632,000 public charging outlets around the world. In the event where EVs hit 30 % market share by 2030, the International Energy Agency projects a need for somewhere between 14 million and 30 million public chargers deployed globally to serve regular passenger vehicles.

“Countries in this region (SE Asia) are emerging markets and each should start with adoption of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and public transport vehicles. China has yet to develop fully, but prices for battery EVs there are very cheap for motorists.” For Thailand, BNEF expects twowheelers to lead the EV market going forward, as electric motorbikes have the

most registrations for EVs at the Land Transport Department. “Once each ASEAN country can adopt EVs for public transport and spread charging stations across the country, the cost of EVs will drop with the start of local manufacturing.” Source: Bloomberg By: The Thaiger

King Power Wins Auction to Run Duty Free Stores at Four Major Thai Airports

King Power has secured the rights to provide duty free retail outlets at major airports in Thailand. King Power promised the airport agency it would pay a guaranteed 23.5 billion baht for first-year operations of commercial areas at Suvarnabhumi, dutyfree shops at Thailand’s main gateway and shops at Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai airports. AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said the returns were much higher than market expectations of only 10 billion baht for the first year from all three contracts. The hotly-contested auction had lured international bidders, including a group of South Korea’s Lotte and Bangkok Airways Pcl, seeking to benefit from Thailand’s booming duty-free industry on growing tourist numbers, and powered airport operator AOT’s revenue growth. Tourist receipts account for about 12% of the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, making it one of the most important drivers of growth, and

in 2018, the country saw more than 38 million visitor arrivals, according to Thai government data. King Power’s winning bids came less than a year after its founder Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha died in a helicopter crash in a helicopter crash outside the stadium of the Leicester City Football Club, that he owned. His death led to analysts questioning the future of King Power’s franchise. King Power, which retains ownership of Leicester City club, offered 15.42 billion baht ($494 million) in yearly minimum guarantee of revenue without tax, topping the Lotte and Bangkok Airways consortium’s 8.52 billion baht bid, AOT said. Another group - the Royal Orchid Hotel Pcl and WDFG UK, a unit from travel retailer Dufry -- made an offer for 7.26 billion baht. For a separate concession contract for three major regional international airports in Hat Yai, Phuket, and Chiang Mai,

King Power also outbit its rivals by offering 2.33 billion baht. It also won a licence to operate commercial services such as restaurants and shops at all four airports, beating local retail giant Central Pattana with an offer for a yearly minimum revenue of 5.8 billion baht.

King Power ’s current duty-free concession at Suvarnabhumi airport is set to expire in 2020, and the new concession will expire in March 2031. AOT, Thailand’s second biggest company by market value, reported a 13% rise in concession revenue to 16.7 billion baht in the last fiscal year.

16 Eating Blueberries Every Day Slashes The Risk of Heart Disease by 15% Eating a cup of blueberries every day can improve your heart health and reduces the risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease by 15 percent, new research has found. Scientists found overweight adults who consumed 150g of the fruit daily had increased blood flow and less stiff arteries. Over a 6 month period, researchers from the University of East Anglia in the UK analysed 138 people aged between 50 and 75 who were classified as overweight. They looked at the benefits of eating 150g of blueberries every day and compared

them to another group who ate just 75g. The researchers found that eating blueberries can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by between 12% and 15% and people who eat blueberries have a reduced risk of developing conditions such as type two diabetes. “We found that eating one cup of blueberries per day resulted in sustained improvements in vascular function and arterial stiffness – making enough of a difference to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by between 12% and 15%,” Dr Peter Curtis, co-leader of the study explained.

“The simple and attainable message is to consume one cup of blueberries daily to improve cardiovascular health,” Dr Curtis added. Unexpectedly, we found no benefit of a smaller 75 gram (half cup) daily intake of blueberries in this at-risk group. “It is possible that higher daily intakes may be needed for heart health benefits in obese, at-risk populations, compared with the general population.” Lead author Professor Aedin Cassidy said: “Having metabolic syndrome significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.”

He said previous studies have shown people who regularly eat blueberries have a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. “This may be because blueberries are high in naturally occurring compounds called anthocyanins,” Professor Cassidy added. The compounds are responsible for the red and blue colour in fruits. Other studies have shown they can improve some markers of heart disease. Regularly eating blueberries has also been linked to helping reduce blood pressure.

Bladder Stones A bladder stone is a crystal/stone precipitated from body excretion filtered through the kidney. These stones can be found in different types and sizes. The patient could get the stones in their kidney, ureter, pelvis, or even bladder. There are higher risks to get bladder stone for the following group of people: Those whose favoruir food high in protein, sodium, and sugar; Those who do not drink an insufficient amount of water; Those who are experiencing obesity or overweight; Those who have urinary tract diseases, gout or arthritis;

People with a family member having or had lithiasis also have a higher risk of getting bladder stone diseases. The symptoms are varied from having no symptom at all to the stage of severe pain at the side of the body, aching to the back. Sometime the pain could be from the lower belly to the groin area. If the stones move lower until it reaches the urethra, it will clog the urethra causing difficulties in urinating, an abnormal amount of urine, or a burning sensation or pain when urinating. Patients experiencing bladder stones produce urine with blood brown or pink colour.

HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

Such symptom usually occurs together with an infection, causing the patient to feel nauseous, vomiting, having a fever, feels shivering and may lead to other complications — for example, severe bloodstream infections or damage in the kidney that may evolve to renal failure. A bladder stone can be prevented if you live a healthy lifestyle. You need to drink a sufficient amount of water every day to dilute the intensity of the urine to reduce the risks of bladder stones. Also, try to avoid foods that contain calcium oxalic; such as tea, chocolate, asparagus, spinach, nuts, and grains. It is also recommended to get an annual health check-up with urine examination, once you are 30 years old or older to prevent yourselves from the disease and stay healthy. By Health Lab

To prepare for the gastroscopy, the patient is required to fast (no food or drink) for at least 8 hours before the procedure. During the endoscopic procedure, the doctor will use local anesthetic to numb the throat before inserting the endoscope camera passing the esophagus and into the stomach, respectively. For those who do not want to

have gastritis, they should avoid spicy food. Some medications such as pain-relieving muscle pain or anti-inflammatory which can destroy the lining of the stomach. For colorectal cancer, patients who are at risk mostly are ones who are more than 50 years old with or without symptoms especially ones with the family history. The history of family members having colorectal cancer at the very young age is significant The symptoms such as bloody defecation, weight loss, distension, constipation, diarrhea especially chronic form are important and ones with such symptoms should receive colonoscopy which is a colorectal cancer screening procedure. Dr. Suthisit also shares that there are 3 methods of early detection of colorectal cancer. The simple method is stool examination. Other than that is a radiological examination using opaque material to see

the lining of the intestines but the most popular and most effective method which is colonoscopy. The risks for cancer increases with consumption of fatty diet and it is more recommended to eat a lot of fiber and exercises regularly for good health. At Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, we provided modern technology and safe endoscopy to early detect GI cancer. The technique called Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) promote thorough view of the lining of our intestines. This technology helps doctors to diagnose the disease and without the use of chemicals injected into the patient’s body. Moreover, it can help detect the abnormal tissues of the initial stage that can help patient receive treatment as soon as possible.

a history of GI cancers in the family. Dr. Suthisit Likitlersuang Dr. Suthisit Likitlersuang, our specialist in gastroenterology at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shares that most people with upper abdominal pain are mainly having conditions of gastritis. However, patients should be careful of having other diseases of the liver, pancreas or gallbladder. If patients are older than 50 years with the abdomen pain in the middle of the stomach or epigastric pain should have an examination of gastroscopy, especially ones with history of gastrointestinal bleeding such as vomiting blood, passing black stool or with weight loss without known causes and difficulty of swallowing,

19 Prayuth Chan-Ocha Confirmed as Thailand’s

New PM, Vows to ‘Do His Best’ Former military leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha has been confirmed as Thailand’s new civilian prime minister. Prayuth easily defeated Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, a charismatic political newcomer, by 500-244 votes in a combined ballot by both houses of parliament. The vote followed the general election which took place on March 24 and which was the first since Prayuth seized power during the 2014 military coup. The newly endorsed prime minister said he wanted all Thais to join hands with him to take the country forward. Prayuth vowed to “do his best for the nation, religion, monarchy, and the people”, according to government spokesperson, Lieutenant General Werachon Sukondhapatipak. Some Thais have taken to social media to express their disappointment that Prayuth is the new PM. However, others have said his election victory was well deserved as he helped to bring stability to the country after years of political turmoil. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Prayuth has said he expects to name his new cabinet by the beginning of July. Gen. Prayut said he has received the list of all candidates and their qualifications are now under review. Answering critics who said he lacks the political experience needed to be a successful civilian PM, he said that such criticism was inaccurate and politely reminded people that he has been governing the country for the last five years. He also called on politicians from all

sides to work together, respect the law and stop causing unnecessary conflict. One of Prayuth’s first official roles since his appointment as civilian PM was to chair the 34th ASEAN Summit which was held in Bangkok from June 22 to 23. The summit, with the theme “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability,” focussed on promoting cooperation and strengthening consensus process among ASEAN members to address new global challenges. During the two day summit, the leaders of the 10 ASEAN member states discussed issues related to security, economic and social affairs and measures to cope with the ongoing trade war.

22 Vanellus indicus : Red-wattled Lapwing

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Vanellus indicus is a medium-sized wader in the plover family (Charadriidae).

centimeters. They are therefore approximate the size of a lapwing. Males and females are similar in appearance. It has characteristic loud alarm calls which are variously rendered as; did he do it or pity to do it leading to colloquial names like the; did-he-do-it bird. The yellow legs and red beak with black tips are relatively long. The top plumage has a light brown color with a metallic-green approach. The bird has a black crown, black plumage on the front face area, black breast plumage and black tips on the tail feathers white. Located at the sides of the face, a red rag root of the beak to the eyes. At the rear face area, the plumage is white, which expires into white underside feathers . In flight, a broad white band is visible, which runs diagonally across the wing. Young birds have a duller brown and faded markings on the head. The chin and throat are whitish. The red flap of skin in young birds are less pronounced than in adult birds.

Taxonomy

Traditionally well-known to native hunters, the redwattled lapwing was first described in a book by the French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in his Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux in 1781. The bird was also illustrated in a hand-coloured plate engraved by FrançoisNicolas Martinet in the Planches Enluminées D’Histoire Naturelle produced under the supervision of Edme-Louis Daubenton to accompany Buffon’s text. Neither the plate nor Buffon’s description included a scientific name but in 1783 the Dutch naturalist Pieter Boddaert used the binomial name Tringa indica in his catalogue of the Planche Enluminées. The type locality is Goa in western India. It was subsequently placed in various other genera such as Sarcogrammus and Lobivanellus before being merged into Vanellus which was erected by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. Vanellus is the Medieval Latin for a “lapwing”. It is a diminutive of the Latin vanus meaning “winnowing” or “fan”. The specific epithet indicus is the Latin for “India”.

Description

Like other lapwings they are ground birds that are incapable of perching. They reach a body length of 32-35

Distribution and habitat.

The breeding areas of the Red-wattled Lapwing are located in wetlands and along rivers in Iraq, Iran and southern Russia. The birds that breed in the south of Russia, migrate in winter to South Asia such as India and East Africa and West Africa. The distribution of each subspecies is distributed as follows: The nominate Vanellus indicus indicus occurs in Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

The subspecies Vanellus indicus lankae is widespread in Sri Lanka The subspecies Vanellus indicus atronuchalis comes from northeast India Myanmar Thailand to Malaysia and Vietnam.

The Vanellus indicus resides mainly inland, near waters. It can be observed on mud surfaces at ponds, ditches, canals and rivers. He is particularly common in wide area irrigated fields, but can also be observed in grassy or rocky wasteland. Vanellus indicus are mostly resident birds with only short migration during dry periods or after rainfall. The small number of breeding birds in Turkmenistan, however, are migratory birds that winter in Afghanistan or Pakistan, and return in the second half of April to Turkmenistan. There are only a few information regarding the inventory figures. In Iraq, the population numbers probably decline dramatically after there were large-scale wetlands drained in the 1990s. Vanellus indicus especially search during the night for food. They eat mostly ground-dwelling vertebrates such as beetles, ants, grasshoppers and termites. In addition, mollusks, worms and crustaceans are taken.

Breeding

The nests are usually built directly on the ground and are usually located near water. The flat trough is often covered with small stones or other material. The nest consists of three to four eggs. These are buff with a yellow or green tinge and have brown spots and black spots on. Both parent birds breed, but the larger share of the breeding is done by females. The incubation period is 26 days.

23 Agriculture Department urged Farmers to Plant More ‘Siam Gold’

Agriculture Department urged farmers to grow more pineapples or best known as the ‘Siam Gold’. Demands are now greater than supplies as there is a significant growth in foreign markets, such as Japan, South Korea and China. These countries are requesting Thailand to increase their export of fresh pineapples. ‘Siam Gold’ or MD2 is a brand name of pineapple grown in Prachuap

Khiri Khan Province. Unfortunately farmers couldn’t keep up with the demand as productions are low. Mr. Anon Loadtanong, Vice President of the Agricultural Council Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and Secretary of the Thai Pineapple Planter Association said that due to high demand of the international market, the current price of MD2 pineapple is between 20 – 25 Baht per kilogram.

Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin

Prachuap Khiri Khan Province has the largest pineapple plantation in the country and has a planting area of nearly Five Hundred Thousand Rais or about 80,000 hectares. Although farmers prefer to grow pattawia (a similar kind of pineapple) which are used to make canned pineapples. Pattawia pineapple priced at 7.50 – 8 Baht per kilogram, is expected to drop in the future as a result of oversupply

in production, while the demands for fresh pineapples in overseas market continues to grow. “In the past, government agencies in Prachuap Province supporting large farms in various districts have divided the plantation into sections for pineapple planting so as to increase production and domestic pineapple consumption. But it has been difficult to purchase the different kinds of pineapple seeds or shoot due to high price. In addition, there is no marketing plan to support the production and farmers are reluctant to invest in pineapples due to low price of the product which is 5 Baht per kilogram. ’’ Said Mr. Anon.

Currently, leading grocery stores and supermarkets around the country has a high demand in ‘Siam Gold’ pineapples for exporting to foreign markets. It is also known that MD2 pineapples can be stored at normal temperatures longer than other kind of pineapples. It is said that Thailand exported more than 100,000 tons of MD2 pineapples to the Philippines every year. Therefore, the government urged farmers to grow more MD2 pineapples to cope up with the increase of future demands in foreign market. The government has now allocated a budget for growing MD2 pineapples in Sam Roi Yot District and experimentation is already being conducted.

Students Visit Mangrove Preservation Centre On 10th June 2019, a group of international high school students from NIST (New International School Thailand) in Bangkok visited Krailart Niwate Mangrove Preservation Center to plant trees and conduct research on the ecosystem. All of the students and teachers were provided with our RCRHH reusable shopping bag and reusable drinking water flasks from Chiva-Som International Health Resort. Chiva-Som is the environ-

mental preservation steward of Hua Hin’s last remaining mangrove forest and over 5,000 trees have been planted in the forest by various stakeholder groups since 2007. Chiva-Som sponsored the construction of the 1,000 meter elevated boardwalk throughout the ecosystem in 2015 to promote ecospiritual tourism in the region and to raise awareness of the important roles of mangrove ecosystems

in our world. RCRHH President Brian Anderson is the manager of the forest as well as the Head of Sustainability at Chiva-Som. P Brian stated, ‘Cindy Chen is the Earth Science teacher at NIST and the key driver of Sustainability at the school. She has been bringing students to the mangrove for the last six years to plant trees and the students are always delighted to see the growth of the trees that they have planted.’

Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin recently visited Naresuan Pa-La-U Border Patrol Police School to encourage students and teachers to understand more about waste separation and recycling, in support of World Environment Day. The activity called “Waste Recycle Bank Project”, which not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also raises awareness of border school on the importance of recycling and the value of waste materials that can become a source of income. Staffs of Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin took the time to arrange training and activities as this awareness involves us all. And the solution has to start with education, by changing the mindset of a young generation so they could adopt the more sustainable practice in daily lives, in school and everyone will benefit. Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin is committed to conducting business with a focus on quality as well as social and environmental responsibility. The hotel also sets its positioning as a sustainable travel destination. With that in mind, a hotel is looking for more to the future to integrate high-touch experiences with meaningful energy conservation and sustainability activities. With the updates on restoration design, a resort has more confidence to engage the ways of helping to shape industry standards. HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

26 TTM Plus 2019: TAT Connects New Buyers with New Markets

The Thailand Travel Mart Plus, the country’s leading B2B travel show, opened for business on 5 June 2019, ushering in a new era of business opportunities for new buyers from new markets looking for emerging new Thai destinations. The three-day TTM+ 2019 is being held under the theme of ‘New Shades of Emerging Destinations’ as part of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) strategy to promote 55 provincial destinations which are already popular with domestic tourists and now seen as being ready for an influx of foreign visitors. The objective is to create jobs and distribute revenue countrywide, from major cities to local communities, while creating sustainability by balancing the number of visitors to the destinations. Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, TAT D e p u t y G o v e r n o r o f International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) said that this year’s TTM Plus features some important changes

in the trade show component to ensure enhanced business opportunities for both buyers and sellers. She said “The total of 340 buyers from 51 countries is up 18.47% over 2018. Meanwhile, the TAT is seeking to step up its profile in the long-staying, high-spending Latin American market. For the

first time, the buyers list includes 13 companies from Brazil along with new buyers from Chile, Argentina and Colombia. First time buyers have also been invited from other new sourcemarkets; such as, Lebanon, Latvia, Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Slovakia, Ukraine and Israel.

The sellers list includes 370 exhibitors, mainly from the Southern and Central regions of Thailand. In order to help buyers home in on the emerging destinations, the directory of sellers includes a special listing of the 20 exhibitors from this segment. Mrs. Srisuda said, “We recognise that in this era of constant change in everything from customer segments to technology and demographic profiles, the value of travel trade shows needs to be constantly refreshed and enhanced to justify the investment in time and money by both buyers and sellers. We also have to marry the business objectives of the private sector with our national objectives to create jobs, reduce income disparities and better distribute visitors around the country. At the TTM Plus, all these objectives have been merged. It takes time and effort for emerging destination cities to be recognised and chosen by travellers, and this year’s TTM Plus has set the ball rolling.” As the trade show opened on World Environment Day, it also included some major environmental protection features.

All the printed materials, including the trade directory and press releases, are on-line, minimising paper distribution. Water coolers are placed around the hall, with delegates being encouraged to bring along their own water containers. There are no plastic bags in sight anywhere. The line-up of TTM Plus talks also included an all-Thai cast of 10 speakers covering a broad range of cultural, environmental, technological and historic topics under the theme “Making the World a Better Place through Travel”. The business sessions were on 6-7 June after which the buyers and media departed for posttours to various parts of Chonburi, Rayong, Chantaburi, and the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia. In 2018, the Thai tourism industry recorded a total of 38 million international arrivals, up by 7.54%, generating an estimated US$62 billion in earnings, up by 9.63% over 2017. This year, TAT has set a growth target of twelve percent in tourism revenue from the international market. For further details, please check www.thailandtravelmartplus.com

The Great Mekong Bike Ride 2019 elevates Isan province as sports tourism destinations The Great Mekong Bike Ride 2019, scheduled from 28-30 June, is ready to welcome more than 2,000 Thai and foreign road race cyclists and elevate the awareness of Thailand’s Northeast (Isan) provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan and Sakon Nakhon, as sports tourism destinations. This year marks the fourth edition of this epic, long-distance road race cycling event organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in cooperation with Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon and Mukdahan provinces, the Thai Cycling Association and Tri-League. Registration is now closed as full participation numbers have been reached, at 2,000 cyclists. These include 400 international cyclists from 22 countries and 1,600

HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

Thai cyclists. The event is expected to generate about 20 million Baht in tourism revenue for the local economy. TAT Governor Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn said: “The Great Mekong Bike Ride has earned its welldeserved place as a leading cycling event in Thailand thanks to the continued success of its last three seasons. “The staged race format has been carefully designed to promote tourism and sport in the emerging destinations in line with the government’s policy and TAT’s marketing strategy. It showcases the rich history, culture and natural attractions that these Isan provinces can offer memorable experiences for local and international cyclists.”

Hua Hin Ranked Among the 10 Best Places to Retire in Asia Hua Hin has been named as one of the best places to retire in Asia, according to an article recently published by news and information site U.S. News & World Report. The article by the U.S. site, which was first reported by Thaivisa, included Hua Hin in The 10 Best Places to Retire in Asia. Chiang Mai also featured in the list. I n i t s a r t i c l e , t h e s i te considered factors such as cost of living, weather and medical care, all of which were favourable in both Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. The article said Hua Hin “has good year-round weather and a large foreign community”. “A retiree can afford a high

standard of living, including days on the city’s golf courses and regular dinners out at first-class restaurants, on a modest budget. “The standard of local medical care is good, and you’re less than three hours from Bangkok, which boasts some of the region’s top hospitals. “Housing options include modern condos, beachfront homes and modern gated communities. “The big foreign community connects through reading clubs, festivals, cycling clubs, soccer leagues, wine tastings and darts tournaments”. Of Chiang Mai, it said “since the 1800s, the Thai city of Chiang Mai has been luring expats from the

west with its low cost of living, great weather, rich history and distinct culture.”

It added that Chiang Mai offers a mix of traditional Thailand alongside “mega malls, multinational grocery and department stores and other trappings of 21st century living”.

“The biggest advantage of retirement in Chiang Mai is the low cost of living and affordable health care. “A couple can live here

However if the insurer does not nullify the contract within a certain period of time as stated in Section 865, paragraph 2 and Section 866, the insurer has to cover all the costs throughout the term of the insurance. 634 Meditation as a Discipline Strategy in Schools

All schools develop policies which include discipline procedures and outline the school’s philosophy and practice. Interestingly, these policies and practices can differ dramatically from one school to another within the international school environment. In previous articles we have discussed the importance of understanding any potential school’s policies and practices and the subject of discipline practices should be closely reviewed by all parents and students. In our home countries, most families are regulated to attend the school within their home catchment area and as such are forced to blindly accept their local school’s policies. Much attention over the last decade has included a rejection of traditional methods of discipline such as exclusion and suspension and more attention is being paid to understanding and opting for ‘resolution’ strategies instead.

Discipline is defined as ‘the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience’. An alternative definition states: ‘a branch of knowledge, typically one studied..’ The latter proposes an alternative to our traditional methods, some of which still include corporal punishment activities, thus challenging educators and families to consider a broader perspective to managing behavior. Much of the research and trends in education call for schools to develop and encourage critical thinking as a cornerstone of the learning process and as such ‘discipline’ most certainly should be included within the curriculum. Looking at ‘discipline’ through the lens of ‘a branch of knowledge’ offers our schools an opportunity to include the study of human behavior and emotional development.

Schools and classrooms thrive on interpersonal relationships so it is no great leap to appreciate that conflict is a real possibility. So how are new trends challenging old traditions and is it effective? Exclusion, being removed from the classroom setting, is no longer considered a positive or effective method. Students and teachers are now collectively developing rules or rather considerations of behavior. Schools are being encouraged to include students in the development of ‘what is positive behavior’ whereby students play a pivotal role in the resolution or and correction of an inappropriate behavior. Classroom environments permitted and encouraged children to ‘police’ themselves. Children are permitted to request a time out, permitted to ‘go run around’ and encouraged to express how they are feeling at that moment in time. This all sounds wonderful but what does this look like in a classroom of 30 students and are

schools capable of offering the necessary supervision that this would definitely involve. After researching and studying many different arguments for and against one approach that stood out and seems to support and reflect the need and desire for developing ‘critical thinking’ across a curriculum. Meditation. The development and implementation of meditation rooms is growing. Schools are designating space and employing or training teachers to facilitate opportunities for children to sit, calm themselves and meditate. Sceptics argue that it is unrealistic to expect a child to understand the ‘complexity’ of meditation and lack the maturity to actively participate in meditation practices. However, the results present a completely different story; in fact, the most impressive results are seen in early childhood environments.

Rakuten’s Viber Asks: Do You Know Your Apps Are Listening? conversing, or voice and video chatting on our platform.” As part of our commitment to privacy and security, all chats on the Viber app are secured by end-to-end encryption. This includes all types of use: messaging, photos, videos, voice, and video calls. From

Viber, a leading messaging app, highlights that the importance of security and privacy in the messaging and communication industry is more significant than ever before. Many social app users around the world are still trying to get past the major data breaches that have recently become public; Viber is committed to protecting user privacy, however, by automatically using end-to-end encryption. Some messaging apps claim that they protect a user’s private conversations. In reality, however, they only take halfhearted measures; some even leave users completely exposed. Some of the apps even listen to users’ conversations and use them for commercial purposes, such as providing ads that relate to what they think users want via their platforms. The latest news of a security breach on WhatsApp calls into question the safety of anyone who communicates online – and these days, that’s mostly everyone. A vulnerability in the application enabled hackers to remotely install malware simply

the moment they are sent to the moment they reach the intended recipient, the data cannot be intercepted by anyone else – not even Viber. This is why users will not see ads relating to something they were just talking about with a friend on Viber. The private chats stay private.

by calling targeted phones. WhatsApp’s parent company also recently faced criticism after Cambridge Analytica was exposed for using the personal data from millions of Facebook profiles for advertising purposes without people’s consent. Major flaws such as this highlight the importance of security, and of being selective about what platforms one uses for communicating. “Having your most private conversations exploited for commercial purposes can be a scary thing,” Anubhav Nayyar, Senior Director of Business Development at Rakuten Viber for the Asia Pacific Region said. “We have seen people experiencing targeted ads right after they finished a conversation; for example, they would see a shoe ad after just discussing a new line of shoes from Italy. It makes you start to wonder what else they are listening to and reviewing within a user’s private chats or voice calls over the messaging app. Viber washes those worries away in the sense that users are in full control of their privacy in messaging, HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

10 38 Gary Woodland Shines in the 2019 US Open; Now For the (British) Open

US golfer Gary Woodland held his nerve to claim his first major with a three-shot victory at the US Open last month, bringing Brooks Koepka’s two-year reign to an end. Woodland had not managed a top-10 finish in his first 27 majors before last year’s PGA Championship, where he tied for sixth, but he handled the final round with the composure of someone who had been playing for golf’s biggest prizes his entire career.

US Open winner Gary Woodlands now at 50/1 for the British Open

Ending his round in style with a birdie at the last, Woodland carded a two-under 69 to keep Koepka from becoming the first man in more than a century to sweep three straight US Opens. Ko epka finishing three shots behind Woodland and in second place—but he actually accomplished something that no one has ever done. With a finalround 68, Koepka became the first player to shoot in the 60s for all four rounds in the event and not win. Going back to last year’s closing 68 at Shinnecock Hills; Koepka also became the first player ever to shoot five consecutive rounds in the 60s at the U.S. Open. After signing his scorecard, the World No. 1 was asked if he thought about the history he was chasing, most notably the three consecutive U.S. Open titles Willie Anderson won from 1903-1905. “I did when it was over, “I thought, ‘Wow’, I was just that close to accomplishing something that hasn’t been done in what, 110 years?’ That’s special.

US Open Runner-Up and World No.1 is 15/1 for the British Open

the Open returns to Northern Ireland for the first time in 58 years. That makes Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell emotional favorites. A Northern Ireland native, McIlroy is a 10-1 second choice. McDowell is a 50-1 shot to win at his home course. In the most-recent betting odds show Brooks Koepka is set as the betting favorite at 6-1. Koepka has won three of the past five majors and missed finished second in the two others. He finished second to Gary Woodland by 3 shots on Sunday.

Woodland is 50-1 to win his second consecutive major. Tiger Woods joins Dustin Johnson at 12-1. BETTING ODDS TO WIN AT ROYAL PORTRUSH; 20/1 or BETTER Brooks Koepka Rory McIlroy Dustin Johnson Tiger Woods Justin Rose Jordan Spieth Francesco Molinari Rickie Fowler Jon Rahm

Koepka was also attempting to win a fifth overall major in nine starts. He’ll try to “bounce back with a win at next month’s Open Championship (AKA the British Open), where he is already the betting favorite to win at Royal Portrush. The fact that Koepka’s caddie, Ricky Elliott, grew up playing at the tournament venue certainly won’t hurt his chances of making even more history in a few weeks. The British Open begins at the Royal Portrush (Dunluce Course) on July 18th to – 21st. Now the final major of the year on the calendar,

Teen Prodigy Atthaya Thitikul Shoots A Course Record on Her Way to Regaining The 2019 Ladies European Thailand Championship

Teen prodigy and reigning champion Atthaya Thitikul continued to demonstrate her extraordinary talent as she built a commanding eight troke lead heading into the final round of the Ladies European Thailand Championship at Pattaya’s Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club. The 16-year-old amateur, who won this tournament aged 14, broke the course record in round three and shot a five-under 67 on Sunday to win by 5 strokes on 22 under.

HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

The youngest winner on the LET at only 14 in the inaugural edition at the Pattaya venue two years ago, Atthaya started her record third round with a two-stroke lead with a birdie on the fifth, followed by a sensational eagle on the long seventh, taking a three stroke lead through the turn. The 16-year-old from Ratchaburi then made five birdies in succession from holes 10-14 and made another gain on the par-3 16th in a flawless, bogey-free nine-under-par 63, which was the lowest round in the three-year history of the championship. “It feels unreal, said Thitikul after coming through a rain-delayed finale. “I’m really pleased with all the things I’ve done in this tournament. The last time I had a bogey was in round two. I just put the ball where I wanted it. Since I won two years ago I’ve kept working hard and I’ve grown in confidence. “ Thitikul, who won the Youth Olympics gold medal in a mixed event last year, along with the Asia-Pacific Amateur c h a m p i o n s h i p, re m a i n e d a picture of relaxation and approachability, humming a song to herself as she plotted

her way around the course. “I don’t want to talk about the future because anything can happen but I will play my game and do my best.

12 40 Golfing Innovation on the European Tour

European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley is spearheading moves to make the game of golf more appealing to both spectators and the younger generation with a variety of innovations on the European Tour.

“While the biggest golfing events, such as The Ryder Cup, the Major Championships and our Rolex Series, continue to get bigger, the battle for regular events to cut through can be more complex and challenging, particularly when you factor in other sports and forms of entertainment which vie for the consumer’s attention”; says Pelley. “This weekend (8th and 9th June), you have the conclusion of the French Open tennis, the start of the women’s football World Cup, the continuation of the Cricket World Cup, the Nations League Football Finals and of course, my personal favourite, the NBA Finals. The prolificacy of consumer choice is why innovation is essential. Fail to innovate and you simply risk being left behind or crowded out;” he pointed out. Amongst innovations on the European Tour this year have been ‘Made in Denmark’, the ‘Belgian Knockout and ‘GolfSixes’. On the surface, Made in Denmark could be viewed simply as another 72 hole stroke play event, but the reality is somewhat different because of the promoters’ unstinting commitment to innovation and originality. Take the 14th hole at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort as an example. What could easily have been a routine, 262 yard par four was transformed thanks to the introduction of the Heineken Lounge, where players walked from the 13th green through the hospitality area to the 14th tee box which was incorporated into the structure. The result was a terrific atmosphere for the fans and the creation of some memorable content from many players. It also created some clever brand exposure for Heineken. Such creativity undoubtedly helped distinguish Made in Denmark from the norm in a congested and competitive golfing landscape. Both the Belgian Knockout and GolfSixes appeal to a younger demographic through head-to-head action as well as shorter form golf – nine hole battles in the former and six hole contests in the latter – which ensures that each shot has a consequence in the outcome of the match.

HUA HIN TODAY, July 2019

Thailand Wins the GolfSixes Final!

GolfSixes also features male and female teams competing against each other, players wearing shorts and using distance measuring devices, as well as a shot clock which gives players a countdown to their stroke. Events such as GolfSixes strive to appeal to a different audience. Last year’s event at the Centurion Club in England attracted a younger demographic on social media with more than 50 per cent of engagement from under 35s, while attendees were 20 per cent younger than the average age of spectators at regular European Tour events. “As well as underpinning our creation of GolfSixes, innovation is one of our central pillars. It drives our content, our use of technology and our introduction of different formats. In a crowded marketplace, this positioning has resonance with our partners, our broadcasters, but also increasingly with how fans view the European Tour as a brand.” Says Pelley The European Tour’s GolfSixes Cascais in June heralded a new era on continental European soil for the fast and fun six hole knockout format, which proved such a success in its first two editions in England.

The field included Ryder Cup winners Jamie Donaldson of Wales, Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and Edoardo Molinari of Italy With 16 teams taking part - 12 qualifying teams of European Tour players and four wildcard teams, two of them allfemale. Matches were played in a modified Greensomes format, with all four players teeing off on every hole. Each duo then chose their team ball for the second shot and then played alternate shots. GolfSixes Cascais innovations included: Players able to wear shorts in competitive play for the first time in European Tour history Players permitted to use measuring devices for the first time in European Tour history To reduce plastic waste, players provided with water bottles to fill at stops on course Drone footage used during tournament play for the first time A Shot Clock, with all strokes to be played within 30 seconds The sixth and final hole tee off from a platform located over a swimming pool, surrounded by fans, VIPs and a live DJ.

For the first time in European Tour history, a title was decided by a closest to the pin play-off as Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai and Thongchai Jaidee overcame Tom Lewis and Paul Waring of England in the final of GolfSixes Cascais at the Portuguese coastal resort. The two teams returned to the final tee – located in a bar and lounge area and overlooking a swimming pool - to play the hole in full once more, but neither team could be separated on the first extra hole and the match was decided by a closest to the pin contest. Khongwatmai, a promising 20 year old who in 2013 became the youngest winner of a professional tournament at 14 years of age, knocked his tee shot to four feet and Thailand became the first Asian team to win the innovative six-hole format event – which is in its third year. “First of all, I’m lucky today. We played a great round, played well today, but I think the team work is very important,” Thongchai said. “It was a good crowd, and hopefully next year there is going to be more crowds. The organiser is very good. Fantastic, atmosphere is very good, as well. And finally, we win the tournament. That’s why it’s fantastic. I’m very happy to win again. I never win two, three years, but now good time to win and thank you my partner, Phachara, and thank you, the caddies, as well, worked very hard.” Thongchai didn’t mention his hole-inone which secured an earlier round victory over defending champions Ireland! Spain overcame Italy in the third/fourth place play-off. GolfSixes Cascais is the third staging of a tournament regarded as vital to boosting the sport’s popularity among younger fans, and the European Tour is keen to take it to the widest possible audience. The format is being adopted at many different levels of the game. The Golf Foundation in the UK has established junior leagues in 22 regions involving 112 clubs and 1,500 players, 30% of whom are girls.

41 13 The Pro’s Getting it Wrong – Relief for an Embedded Ball Matt Kucher fund himself at the centre of an odd rules impasse at the US PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament, where multiple officials and a television replay were needed to sort it out.

Playing the 17th hole at Muirfield Village, Kuchar’s drive ended up in the edge of a pitch mark that he and PGA Tour rules official Robby Ware both agreed was not his. Kuchar, however, argued that he should get relief because he believed his ball had created a second pitch mark within the original. Players are entitled to a free drop from their own pitch mark but not from one made by another player “The rule says it’s got to be your pitch mark,” Ware said after being called to the scene. “If the ball rolled, there’s no way it’s gonna create a second pitch mark.” Kuchar continued to try to make his case, saying, “What if it rolls and it kind of hops up and hops down?” Ware wasn’t buying it. “Even if it hopped up just an inch or two it’s not gonna create [its own mark],” he said. Ware then brought in a cameraman from Golf Channel to view a replay of the shot, which showed the ball taking a couple of hops before settling into what all agreed

was not Kuchar’s own pitch mark. Kuchar still wasn’t satisfied, however, and maintained essentially that the second bounce had created a second pitch mark. “Oh yeah, you see that Robby?” he said to Ware after viewing the replay. “It popped straight up. That has potential to have broken a different ground than what was initially a pitch mark.” When Ware was unmoved, Kuchar asked for a second opinion. Rules official Stephen Cox sided with Ware. “Ultimately it’s already in a hole made by somebody else,” Cox said. “I’m not buying that fact on the second bounce we’re now gonna get you out of a pitch mark made by somebody else.” Kuchar then asked Cox to then take a look at the film. “I don’t need to look at it, Matt,” Cox continued. “The guys have already seen it on TV. Let’s get back into play.” Kuchar then asked if he could seek a third opinion. The answer was no, with the episode finally concluding more than

10 minutes after it began. Kuchar went on to par the hole anyway before finishing with a one-over 73. Afterward, Kuchar told reporters it was a “confusing rule.” “The only reason I did it is just from seeing the video,” Kuchar said. “I only asked for a second one because I thought there was potential and thought, you never know, you may get someone else who says there is potential for that to happen and we need to look further into that.” WHAT DO THE RULES SAY? 16.3 9 (A) Embedded Ball (1) Relief is allowed under Rule 16.3b only when a player’s ball is embedded in the general area. There is no relief under this Rule if the ball is embedded anywhere except in the general area. Exceptions – When Relief Not Allowed: When the ball is embedded in sand in a part of the general area that is not cut to fairway height or less, or

When interference by anything other than the ball being embedded makes the stroke clearly unreasonable (for example, when a player is unable to make a stroke because of where the ball lies in a bush). A player’s ball is embedded only if: It is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke, and Part of the ball is below the level of the ground. If the player cannot tell for sure whether the ball is in its own pitch-mark or a pitch-mark made by another ball, the player may treat the ball as embedded if it is reasonable to conclude from the available information that the ball is in its own pitchmark. “That is the most amusing thing I’ve ever seen someone try to get a ruling on,” 18-time major winner and Memorial host Nicklaus said on the TV broadcast.

14 42 ‘Baan Rim Talaysab’ at Sanctuary Lakes Hua Hin

One of the changes that we noticed during our most recent visit to Sanctuary Lakes was a simple yet prominent sign at the entrance to the first show home; the ‘Kingfisher’, which has now been sold and occupied by a European family. The family wanted to display a chosen name for their new home so ‘Baan Rim Talaysab’ is now proudly that name. Baan Rim Talaysab can be translated from Thai as a ‘Home on the Lakeside’.

Another feature is a system of lochs over the length of the series of lakes to allow for the control of water levels during periods of either extended wet or dry weather. This is not a new or untested system, but precedes the Sanctuary Lakes development and has stood the test of time. Lakeside living at Sanctuary Lakes is a very distinctive feature to this peaceful location with a variety of bird life as the residents able to take advantage of the waterways. A sanctuary is a place where birds or animals are protected and can live in peace. That’s the scenic environment that Sanctuary Lakes provides; it really is a development in harmony with nature.

A further addition is the completion of the ‘Safeguard Entrance’, a welcoming, but security conscious arrival point. Without being a gated community, Sanctuary Lakes now has the ability to monitor the arrival and departure of guests or to turn away any unwelcome visitors; and that’s 24/7. This really adds to the peace of mind of residents, as security and safety is often an important consideration for those settling in unfamiliar territory.

The current show home is the ‘Hummingbird’, but quality in design and construction has once again resulted in the sale of that completed property. After all it’s one thing to look at an artist’s impression, plans or models, but a show home really gives prospective buyers the best indication of the lifestyle to follow. Some time will elapse before the owners take possession, so time to complete the next show home and time for more visitors to understand what is on offer. Monkey Pizza “It’s All About The Base”

If you were to ask diners what their favorite part of a pizza is, what kind of responses do you think you’d get? Is it the cheese, the toppings or the sauce? What if we told you it’s actually all about the base! A poll conducted by seriouseats.com proved this point, with nearly 60% of respondents ranking the crust (AKA base) as most important — a clear winner over a distant-second sauce at 27% and cheese lagging behind at 13%. No doubt about it — crust quality can make or break an entire pizza and if it’s not perfected, the diners will notice. Making and cooking the perfect pizza crust maximizes the pizza-lovers experience, but providing that can be challenging.

That’s a point of view shared by Natkamol Khotchake or Khun Nui, the owner operator of Monkey Italian Pizza & Beer. This small pizza restaurant now showcases the pizza

Khun Nui also makes a trip to Bangkok around every two weeks where her skills and experience is in demand at ‘Thip’s Kitchen, a renowned cooking school. Of course the toppings and flavour choices cannot be ignored. Khun Nui advocates white mozzarella cheese rather than yellow. The white version is processed to filter out fat and have a higher protein. This means when cold, it should be soft, malleable, and moist. Yellow may have added colorants, an anti-caking agent or even ingredients such as potato-starch and corn starch. Not good enough for a Monkey pizza!

bases made at the company premises next door. This is where Khun Nui’s own recipe pizza bases have been made and sold to pizza restaurants across Thailand for the past 7 years, with the restaurant more recently opening. Khun Nui’s pizza bases are light and crispy with a thin crust and available in either 9 or 12 inch sizes. The choices are either the original recipe but also as spinach, whole wheat and black charcoal. There’s no way the recipes are going to be revealed, but one vital ingredient we know about is the flour. ‘Polselli Farina Per Pizza’ is a purpose made Italian pizza maker’s flour. This is the flour to enhance the rounded, unmistakable pizza flavour, making it lighter, more aerated and crispy. Another indication of crust quality is how well it supports pizza toppings. As a customer brings a slice to his or her mouth to take a bite, does it stay fairly parallel to the table, or does it droop downwards? The majority of customers want a crust firm enough to hold its shape when topped. For those who enjoy cooking their own pizzas at home and learn some of the secrets of pizza making, Khun Nui offers pizza making lessons at the premises but also the supply of pizza bases and the seasoned tomato sauce spread.

Monkey Italian Pizza & Beer (very cold beer!) is where you can test taste Khun Nui’s pizza bases beneath an imaginative choice of toppings, most of which are around the 150 THB mark. They can also be home delivered if you prefer and of course the frozen bases are on sale. Footnote: Why the name ‘monkey pizza’? That’s because the location is close to the base of Hin Lek Fai with monkeys as frequent early morning visitors. By the way, according to Chines astrology, Khun Nui was also born in the year of the monkey. MONKEY ITALIAN PIZZA & BEER Where: Soi 70 (Chomsin Road) Hua Hin. 2 46 A Guide to the Markets of Hua Hin Markets around Thailand offer a memorable experience whether you are a holiday-maker, an expat, or a local. Compared to the impressive malls around the country, the markets can be a sweaty network of alleys and stalls spilling out onto the streets. Every market throughout the country has its own unique flair and offers an amazing variety of food, souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, accessories, and tech goods available at fantastic prices. Those who visit are overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, smells, and insight into the local way of life in Thailand, offering an unrivaled cultural experience. Hua Hin offers a wonderful selection of day and night markets to appease even the most seasoned shopper. From vintage clothing and handmade accessories to arcane amulets and mouthwatering local food, shoppers are bound to find something to take home. More than just a shopping experience, visitors can enjoy live music, retro-themed bars, and beer tents that add to the bustling atmosphere of the markets.

Hua Hin Night Market

Hua Hin Grand Night Market

Cicada Market and Tamarind Market

For a more local experience, the Hua Hin Grand Night Market runs from Wednesday to Monday and opens from about 17:00. Here, you’ll find a large selection of clothing stalls, accessories, and cosmetics, as well as a food court alongside the market. The Grand is usually frequented by locals and expats and offers goods at very reasonable prices. Located between the Grand Hotel and San Paolo Hospital, the market is conveniently close to the downtown area of Hua Hin and some of the popular hotels.

Pae Mai Market

These popular weekend markets attract crowds of visitors every week. Nestled beneath hanging trees and set close to the beach in Khao Takiab, both of these markets boast a magical atmosphere in an excellent location. Cicada Market enjoys an international flair with many vendors selling hand-crafted goods and clothing. International cuisine is available from the food market and there is an amphitheater as well as a live music stage that offers amazing weekend performances under a starlit sky. The Tamarind Market, which is just next to Cicada Market, offers more of a relaxed atmosphere and a local vibe. There are some fashion and souvenir vendors but the market is mostly made up of food stalls with a great selection of pizza, corn dogs, kebabs, Pad Thai, and mango/sticky rice to try. In addition to the food stalls, visitors can purchase pitchers of beer and listen to the sounds of the live band before heading over to Cicada Market for souvenir shopping.

Chat Chai Day Market

Probably one of the most popular markets is the Hua Hin Night Market, located in the center of town. Running perpendicular to Petchkasem Road, the Night Market opens from about 18:00 to midnight every day and offers a wide range of vendors. Visitors will find everything from clothing and kitschy silk scarves to fish-shaped shoes and beer coolers, For a bite to eat or a break from the crowd, there are vibrant restaurants and bars nestled between stalls, offering fresh seafood menus that will take foodies on a unique journey.

One of the largest and busiest markets in Hua Hin, the Pae Mai Market is the go-to shopping destination for locals. The market is open on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, however, Tuesdays are the most popular days to visit as most of the stalls are closed on Sunday and on Wednesdays, visitors can only purchase fresh produce. The market opens from about 16:00 and offers an extensive array of food, clothing, electrical appliances, household items, and goods for pets, all at unbelievable prices.

w e N

For an authentic market experience, the Chat Chai Day Market is the place to go to purchase groceries. Located beside the Hua Hin Night Market, Chat Chai is easy to get to and usually the first stop of the day. The market opens from about 05:00 in the morning and boasts a fresh selection of vegetables, fruit, meat, and seafood. The market is popular among cooking schools and generally, a part of the cooking experience as students learn about Thai produce and spices.

Chiva-Som Wins Top Honours at Inaugural Travel & Tourism Sustainability Awards Chiva-Som International Health Resort has been awarded the Best Sustainable Travel and Tourism Initiative – Coast, Coastal Business/Operation at the inaugural Travel & Tourism Sustainability Awards presented by Travel Daily at a ceremony held at Primus Hotel. Believing that personal wellness goes hand-in-hand with environmental wellness, Chiva-Som has long maintained a strong commitment to developing and upholding sustainable initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and giving back to the local community. Chiva-Som has been the environmental preservation steward of the last remaining mangrove forest in Hua Hin, Thailand since 2007. Over 5,000 trees have been planted to reforest the Krailart Niwate mangrove and Chiva-Som funded the construction of a 1,000 meter elevated boardwalk throughout the forest to raise awareness on the importance of mangrove ecosystems and promote eco-spiritual tourism in the region. The resort employs a holistic approach to sustainability with a range of initiatives such as resource recovery practices where waste water is collected and treated onsite. This water is then reused for landscape irrigation and maintaining resort lake levels. Plastic, glass, metal, wood and paper go to a recycling facility, while perishable food items are distributed to local livestock farmers for animal feed. Plant waste from garden maintenance is converted into nutrient-rich compost for use at ChivaSom’s two IFOAM-accredited organic farms.

Energy efficiency, conservation and management are also part of Chiva-Som’s collective mission. The resort decreases usage and dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels and electricity through energysaving technologies and practices. With a focus on nurturing the local community, Chiva-Som supports social welfare programmes, hiring local staff and, whenever possible, purchasing local fresh food, products and services. The resort has thrown its support behind Preserve Hua Hin Group with all proceeds generated from sponsored events going to funding environmental awareness, education and preservation activities. From 1 May – 31 October 2019, ChivaSom will be closed for completion of its extensive refurbishment program. For more information and reservation, please send to reservation@chivasom.com or call the resort at Tel: +66 (0) 3253-6536

539 Hua Hin Run To Give 2019

Charity Fundraising Event Returns! Marriott International is delighted to announce the return of the successful “Run to Give”, annual charity fundraising running event organized by Marriott International involving participating Marriott hotels across Asia Pacific. It’s all part of Marriott’s “TakeCare” initiative that aims to encourage local communities to participate in runs for charity, and “Hua Hin Run to Give” is one of the program’s key events in Thailand. This will be the third consecutive annual Hua Hin Run to Give jointly staged by Sheraton Hua Hin and Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas together with Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa. Setting off from Suan Soan Pradipat on Sunday, 22nd September 2019, Hua Hin Run to Give 2019 features two race categories, namely: 5 km Individual running race (open to all genders and ages) 10 km Individual running racing (open to all genders and ages)

Helmet Event 2019

Teaching Hua Hin School kids the Value of Wearing a Helmet Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, along with other leading hotels and resorts in Hua Hin, recently held its “Helmet Event 2019” to donate 320 motorcycle crash helmets to schoolchildren at Baan Bor Fai School and Tessaban Baan Hua Hin and their teachers. The aim of the donation is to teach the importance of road safety. The schoolchildren in particular are encouraged to wear a helmet when riding on motorcycles by being facilitated to decorate the helmets themselves. All involved enjoyed painting their new helmets along with other fun activities while also learning about the critical issue of road safety. The annual CSR event was supported by the local government sectors led by Hua Hin Municipality, Hua Hin Highway Police, and Hua Hin Tourist Police.

This marks the fourth consecutive year for this collaborative event, as Hua Hin’s hotel community joined hands once again to improve the safety of local children, many of whom risk their lives everyday simply by travelling to and from school. Hotels taking part in the helmet initiative included: Sheraton Hua Hin Resort and Spa, Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas, Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa, InterContinental Hua Hin, Holiday Inn Vana Nava Hua Hin, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin & The BARAI, Amari Hua Hin, AVANI+ Hua Hin Resort, Ibis Hua Hin Hotel, and Chiva-Som International Health Resort. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin and San Paolo Hospital Hua Hin also contributed to the event.

The entry fee for each runner is only 450 Baht and includes one T-shirt. The top three finishers in each category will receive a trophy while every participant is entitled to a medal, a T-shirt and refreshments. Proceeds from the race after expenses will be donated to “Save the Children Thailand” to support the most vulnerable children through Education, Child Protection, Child Safety for Survival, and Health and Nutrition programs in Thailand and across the Mekong delta. Online registration is available at Facebook: Run to Give Hua Hin. For more information, call +66 (0) 32 904 666 or +66 (0) 32 708 123

11 55 One More Reason to Enjoy The Laksasubha With an ocean frontage adjacent to the iconic ‘stone head’ of Hua Hin, a blend of traditional and contemporary architecture and lush landscaped gardens, the Laksasubha Resort presents a link to Hua Hin’s royal history combined with the most desirable modern comforts and conveniences.

The decor reflects a traditional lifestyle influenced by Thai nobility. At Laksasubha Hua Hin Guest villas share the same grounds with the owner’s original family home, recreating the traditional lifestyle of the Thai nobility in a boutique resort at Hua Hin’s prime ocean frontage locations.

That’s the setting which remains an undiscovered hideaway unless you are amongst the growing numbers who have found this piece of paradise. The Rim Talay Restaurant and La Costa Bar are the Laksasubha’s beachside restaurant and beach bar. Both were given a makeover some months ago with Khun Mom Lak, the resort’s owner and resident host imparting her vision for an ‘East meets West’ experience. This is where guests partake fine wines, exotic cocktails, imported beers and amazing Thai or international cuisine.

FOOD & Entertainment, July 2019

12 56 Food Review - CENTROLINA RESTAURANT Two Thai entrepreneurs now offer Italian food at a small restaurant on Soi 88. Chef Jeab is very experienced in Italian food as he worked as a chef at the Dusit Thani San Marco and at the La Villa restaurants for almost 2 decades. The location on Soi 88 is ideal as there is a big parking seating Away from the road. Formerly, the

venue hosted a small waterpark 88 which was discontinued making space for food & beverage facilities. Chef Jeab recommended two different pastas and a special pizza accompanied by a cold beer or some red wine. With the higher temperatures this season, we chose to enjoy a cold beer, not breaking with the Italian tradition. Yes, Italians enjoy

beer as well, It doesn´t always have to be wine. Our first Primo Piato was Ligurian Pesto Spaghetti. The ingredients are composed of fresh basil, finely

grated Parmesan cheese, pine nuts, coarsely chopped garlic and extra virgin olive oil mixed with the Al Dente spaghetti. The taste was mild but very pleasant. As a second serving, our

Chef created a creamy Fettuccine al Salmone Affumicato (Smoked Salmon Fettuccine). We were surprised by the smooth taste and the rich texture. Definitely recommended! We will order it automatically on our next visit. Rounding off our dinner, our Chef Jaeb served a pizza with different toppings including ham , bacon, pineapple, tomatoes and a layer of Mozzarella cheese. What pleased us most of all was the price of our dinner. the spaghetti costed thb 69, the fettucini THB 89 and the pizza THB 89. The portions were not small. Taking into consideration that other venues charge more for the same portions, we can warmly recommend Centrolina Restaurant. Give it a try!
