the Noble Eightfold Path. This day is also regarded as the founding day of the Buddhist sangha (monkhood).

Buddhists throughout Thailand will make merit this month during the morning alms rounds of Buddhist monks and the faithful will attend candle-lit processions at nearby temples in the evening to mark Asarna Bucha. Wan Asana Bucha and Wan Khao Pansa are very important Thai Buddhist holidays in July. This year Wan Asana Bucha is on Friday, 11 July 2014 and Wan Khao Pansa on Saturday, 12 July 2014. This creates a long three-day weekend, where many businesses, government offices, schools and the like will be closed. There will be restrictions on alcohol sales as well. There will be many activities around the temples, predominantly listening to sermons, making merit and feeding of monks. Wan Asana Bucha Wan Asana Bucha (pronounced wan ah sa ha boo cha) commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park at Benares (Varanasi) in India. In this sermon, known as Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion, the Buddha first spelled out the Four Noble Truths and

Many Thai people will return to their ancestral homes to worship in their local temple and to bring offerings for the monks. In the evening they will often perform a wian tian, where they walk clockwise around the main shrine of the temple carrying a candle, three incense sticks and a lotus bed. During the day, monks chant mantras or repeat the first sermon of the Buddha. Wan Khao Pansa Wan Khao Pansa means the day of entering the rains retreat. This is a three-month annual retreat usually undertaken from July to October, during which monks must stay at the same temple, and refrain from wandering around the countryside. In India, it is known as Vassa. It begins on the day after Asana Bucha. The tradition dates from the time of the Buddha, when he forbade monks to travel during the rainy season for fear that they might unintentionally harm crops or insects in the places where they walked. The Rains Retreat in Thailand In Thailand, monks use the retreat to meditate more intensively. Lay people will often use this period to adopt more ascetic practices, abstaining from meat, alcohol or cigarettes, for example. Wan Khao Pansa is often referred to as Buddhist Lent, with an emphasis on reflection and self-denial. It is also a time when many young Thai men ordain and join the monkhood for part or all of the period of the rains retreat.

Khao Pitak School Hua Hin Wins Energy-Saving Award Khao Pitak Hua Hin Municipal School has won first prize for its energy-saving scheme. The award, including a trophy and 250,000 Baht in cash, was given to the Mayor of Hua Hin on 5th June 2014. The school won the award after participating in the project: “Power of Thinking Changes the World”, organised by the Ministry of Energy, Thailand. According to the Director of Khao Pitak School Dr. Wirat Maneepruek, the Energy Ministry invited 8,000 municipal schools throughout Thailand to show their initiative with an energy-saving scheme at a Provincial level for completion by 4th June 2014. Selected by the hosting committee, the school took part in the final competition and won the first prize along with 4 other municipal schools which were also prize winners. Dr. Wirat said the project that the school proposed in the competition aimed to reduce using electricity usage with a model for their teachers to implement and for students to follow. For example, all light bulbs are to be cleaned before use, electric fans in classrooms can be turned on only when there is teaching in progress and air conditioners will be used only when there is a meeting or an important event. Not only is the model used widely at the school, but teachers and students also employ it at homes, so that the energy-saving

“Previously, we had to pay 18,000 to 20,000 Baht a month for electricity at school. Then we introduced this energy-saving model at the beginning of 2013 to save the unnecessary use of electrical appliances. The school has 20 classrooms, each of which has 4 electric fans. We then encouraged teachers to use only 1 electric fan for each of the classroom together with reducing the use of other electric appliances. The school has saved around 10,000 THB per month since then. If all 8,000 municipal schools in Thailand use the simple energy-saving model introduced by the 5 award-winning schools, over 100 million THB a month can be saved,” commented Dr. Wirat. The trophy and the cash given to the Hua Hin Mayor were returned to the school for development projects. Pleased with the award that Khao Pitak Hua Hin received, the mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul said that he would ask 7 other municipal schools here to use the energy-saving model together with all offices at the Hua Hin Municipality. Subsequently, the schools’administrators and municipal officers will consider how much expenses they have to pay for the electricity per month and how much money they can save once the model is used in practice.

Legal Negotiation Centre Now Open in Hua Hin

The Attorney General of Prachuap Khirikhan and the Hua Hin Municipality have opened a centre for legal negotiation to deal with cases between public officers, Thai people and foreigners.

mainly responsible for considering whether to proceed to court or not. The Centre allows for these cases to taken care of directly by legal officers who can also work as mediators mange the dispute.

The opening ceremony, on 10th June 2014 was attended by the Attorney General Mr. Rewat Suksiri from the Office of the Attorney General 7 and the Deputy Hua Hin Mayor Ms. Phailin Kongphan. Located at the main lobby of the Division of Legal Affairs on the 3rd floor of Hua Hin Municipality, the Centre will be responsible for mediating or resolving disputes and conflicts between local people and public offices including those related to

“Hua Hin has many civil and other legal cases between local people and public offices as well as between Thais and foreigners. Most cases concern property, land and business ownership. Anyone who has problems with these matters can come to the Centre and seek for advice from our legal specialists before deciding to proceed with legal prosecution,” added Mr. Rewat.

H Personal and public criminal matters H Advice about legal problems prior to prosecution or filing a law H Drafting legal agreements about land titles and property H Providing legal advisors and lawyers in cases of legal prosecution. Mr. Rewat said that the Centre would consider all legal matters and cases of legal prosecution to reduce this responsibility for police officers. Previously, anyone who had legal problems would go to a Hua Hin Police Office where cases had to be forwarded to public prosecutors who are HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

scheme is extended from inside to outside the school’s premises, added Dr. Wirat.

According to the Attorney General, Thailand has used community representatives or mediators such as village heads, community leaders, district chiefs or provincial governors to solve conflicts between people since the reign of King Chulalongkorn. Police officers are now facing too much work with legal problems, which is not their major task leaving insufficient to complete their responsibilities. Realising the advantages of negotiations, the Office of the Attorney General has bring back this method and promote it at all provincial offices. Centres for legal negotiation are expected to be launched in all Thailand Provinces.

7 This Month in History

Many of you already know ‘Dizzy Lizzy Bizzy, as she is best known. Lizzy is always actively promoting events in Hua Hin and started the extremely popular monthly ‘Multi Culti’ events in Hua Hin. Some months ago Lizzy met Andrew Stocks from the Power of Love Church and they clicked immediately. Lizzy said: “My life became so wonderful from when I met Andrew, without words we think same same”. Both are very passionate people. Rather than speaking about themselves, they share a very special dedication; to help people in need and they both are dedicating their hearts full time to this.

The bikini bathing suit made its debut in Paris, France, 1946

Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was born, 100 B.C.

Apollo 11 orbited the moon, 1969

In 2009-2011 Lizzy organised events for the German speaking community then in 20101012 for the Swiss community, but this was not enough. Something was missing, she always dreamt of multicultural community events and this was the next step. The very first ‘Multi Culti’ Event was in 2013 and it was very successful. A ‘Multi Culti’ Event is now held on the 28th of each month and there are never less than 150 people attending. From the income of the event, 10% goes to charities. Besides that Lizzy is also, even before she came to Thailand, involved with the R.I.C.D wheel chair project donating wheelchairs to the people in need.

Power of Love is a registered charity under the COC. They distribute food to people in need. You can see their projects on Facebook or you can be one of them and go with them to help. Both Andrew and Lizzy are involved in helping people that live in the slums of Hua Hin, providing them with food and helping them improve their quality of life. These people live under very harsh conditions and need our help. In Hua Hin we have around 38 small slum areas. When they say slums, they mean people who don’t have the basic needs of life. Their home is a cardboard box or made from pieces of wood, sometimes without even a roof. Many of them are not able to move because of their disabilities and there is no one to help them. They have been rejected from their families who cannot help them. We are not talking only about old people many of them are children, who because of the circumstances in life have no future. With many poor children in need of a good home that would provide protection and a real chance to change their life, Andrew decided that Hua Hin needed a dedicated Home for these children and so the idea for the Power of Love Home came into existence. The Home will be located in Khao Takiab on 1.5 rai of

Visit http://www.thailand-huahin.com/huahinmunicipality-news/RICD-wheelchair-project. htm to read more about this. Lizzy is trying to support this project for the disabled people of Hua Hin. Lizzy donates around 35,000 baht per month, money that she collects for the charity and also from her private income. Andrew came to Hua Hin 10 years ago, before that he was living to Pattaya. He comes from a business background but he left everything behind and is now dedicating his life to a very important purpose, helping other people. He is the creator of the Power of Love Church and their job is to help people in need, people with chronic diseases such as diabetes and disabled people who they have been forgotten by their families.

land and will house 40 children from 3 to 15 years old. As Andrew says, these poor children deserve a chance and this home will provide them with safe housing, food and education. They will be able to build a good life for themselves, breaking their cycle of misery. The location has ready access to two public schools in Khao Takiab. The kids will also be taught English by volunteers.

Construction will start in July with a total cost of THB 27 million. Lizzy and Andrew are actively looking for donations supporting this worthy cause. Lizzy arranges events that are great fun to join, but that also provide the very important funds to support this cause. So far they have collected THB 2.7 million. A great start, but much more is needed. If we put ourselves behind this, we can make this a great success story and change the life of these children. The Power of Love Home is looking for help and donations in the form of building materials, furniture and other essentials. You can contact Andrew on www.thaipolic.com for more information about how you can help. It is a great way to give and help the people in need around us in Hua Hin. You can help in so many ways, so please do what you can. Let us all do our bit to make Hua Hin a better place for everyone. Both Lizzy and Andrew have collection points where you can bring old clothes, bring food that will be distributed to the poorest in Hua Hin, you can also volunteer and work with them helping them in their great cause. I will close this interview with Andrew words: “Give back to community and give back to people. Action always speaks louder than words, we hope that this Home will be the first and more will come after that. Think big, have big vision. “ See you all of you at Lizzy’s next event together with Skal and Rotary clubs on 28th of July, the Swiss National Day at the Hyatt Regency. 8 Fashions & life style Sizzling Summer Dress Styles

If you’re heading to a Sunday brunch, a wedding celebration, a picnic to the beach or a barbecue/pool party to a friend’s place, and you aren’t sure what to wear follow our top four dresses styles which are the perfect summer afternoon look, showing your girly side, with floral prints, casual and chic styles. The Drop Waist Dress

Maxi Dresses

The drop waist dress and skirt has seen a glorious resurgence on the Spring Summer 2014 runway since the release of The Great Gatsby last year.

The maxi dress is one of those rare trends that is functional, fashionable, beautiful and most importantly comfortable. A trend that women throughout the decades have turned to is the maxi dress for both fashion and comfort. Another great thing about maxi dresses is that can then look fashionable year round, from winter well into summer.

It first came into fashion in the 1920s and was the dress of choice for frivolous flapper girls attending Gatsby-like parties where they would dance the Charleston all night long. But these days, the drop waist dress has been given a whole new meaning. A low-slung bag is essential for an afternoon of shopping.

During the summer time we highly recommend you rock a boho chic maxi dress with either a floral or paisley pattern. Have fun choosing then wearing your afternoon dresses ladies!

Midi Skirt “When women gave up their long skirts, they made a grave error…” The Midi skirt has taken the runway and the street by storm since late last year and has since been going strong. Midi skirts were widely popular in the 50’s. In year 2014 it has returned and landed as a full-fledged trend. If maxi length is not your cup of tea and you are already bored with a mini length, then opt for this refreshing new length which ends a few inches below the knees. With the right type of top and accessories, you’ll find yourself reaching for this skirt more than anything else this season.

How To Wear A Midi Skirt #1 Wear it high-waisted: The number one rule with wearing a Midi skirt – wear it high on your waist, where your natural waistline sits at the thinnest part of your natural curve. When worn correctly, Midi skirt looks great on all body types and accentuates the waist. #2 Pair it with a crop top or tuck in the top: The focus when wearing this skirt is the skirt itself. So wear it with a crop top or a top nicely tucked to look chic and fashionable. #3 Wear with or without heels: There is no doubt that Midi skirt + heels = fabulously feminine. Even if it is a kitten heel, it offers a classic look , you cannot go wrong. Wear it with sandals or sneakers for a casual day look.

HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

Floral Belted Dresses Floral belted dresses are this year’s “it” outfit for summertime. Floral print is always the perfect way to usher in the warm weather seasons. This year ladies are adding funky and fun belts. What we love most about the belted floral dress is that it’s super girly and ultra-flirty. This looks is exactly what you need for a date or a girl’s day out on a lovely picnic day. Finish off the look by adding a braided belt for a boho chic look. The belted floral dress is the perfect ensemble to attend a wedding. Try adding a lace blazer and pearl earrings for a simply sweet appropriate look for the nuptials.

10 News Asean Nations Taking Steps to Ensure Real Benefits

Sometimes the talks surrounding the establishment of Asean seem to be lacking real substance with the likely benefits being lost with many more symbolic, rather than economic benefits being prevalent. However beneath the hype there have been a number of projects which may give more weight to the long term success of this regional integration. Here are some of the changes that are projected. Transport Routes

Moves to facilitate the cross-border transfer of people, goods and capital to promote economic development are spreading within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The Strait of Malacca to the west of the Malay Peninsula lies midway between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. A key junction for east-west trade, the strait has now drawn attention as a strategic link between Malaysia and Indonesia. In 1996, then-Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad proposed to Indonesian President Suharto that the two countries build a 50km bridge over the Strait of Malacca. The proposed project to link the countries, which stumbled as a result of the Asian currency crisis, is again emerging under the initiative of a private Malaysian company called Strait of Malacca Partners. The company envisions building an undersea tunnel connecting Malacca State with the Indonesian island of Sumatra, said Managing Director Lim Sue Beng.

The project is estimated to cost $193 billion, which is expected to take 80 years to recover the cost through revenue generated by the operation of the tunnel. It is necessary therefore “to get a consensus from many people from both Malaysian and Indonesian sides,” said Datuk Seri Idris Haron, Chief Minister of Malacca State, who still thinks the tunnel is a good idea. If it is built it would be another success for bringing Asean nations closer together. Malaysia, with a gross domestic product of more than $10,000 per capita, is the third-wealthiest nation in Asean. And 3 million Indonesians are estimated to work and live in Malaysia. Energy Options

Tenaga Nasional, the biggest electric power company in Malaysia, is undertaking feasibility studies jointly with Indonesia’s state-run electricity supplier PLN and coal company Bukit Asam to lay a 50km undersea cable across the Strait of Malacca to connect the

Not Enough Time

To Prepare for Asian Games, Says Thailand A final decision on a country that will replace Vietnam as the host of the 2019 Asian Games will be made in September. That being the case, the question is whether Thailand, which has hosted many Games when others had thrown their hands up, will throw its hat into the ring. Vietnam laid out comprehensive plans to host the Games in June 2011 and won the bid in November 2012. Things turned sour when Vietnam backed out last month, claiming economic downturn and lack of experience in hosting such a mega-event as the two main reasons for developing cold feet. Malaysia and Indonesia have expressed their willingness to step in as a replacement. However, according to sources, the Chairman of The National Sports Committee of Indonesia, Rita Subowo, appeared to distance his country from the bid. Malaysia’s Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that they were not interested. Last Tuesday, the Indian Olympic Association, which lost the bid to host this year’s Asian Games to Incheon in 2007, expressed its strong desire to stage the 2019 edition. However, it has to bank on the new central government that will be set up this month to approve the plan. The final decision to pick the hosts will be made on September 20 during the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Some have wondered why Thailand, which has magnanimously hosted more Asian Games than any other country, did not raise their hands. In fact, the Kingdom has already ruled itself out because of the shortage of time to prepare for the Games. General Yuthasak Sasiprapha, president of the Olympic Committee of Thailand, was very clear in saying that five years is too short a period of time for any country, let alone Thailand. Hosting the Games means investing in infrastructure, people’s skills and branding. One top priority is the safety of athletes and officials. It’s clear that Thailand is suffering from general slowdown in economic activity and hosting the Games would mean more public debt and racking up more deficit figures in the national budget. Therefore, hosting the 2019 Games is too risky for Thailand. HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

two countries’ grids. Indonesia plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Sumatra’s Riau Province and sell electricity to Malaysia. Under the plan, Indonesia will sell electricity from coal-rich Sumatra to a power hungry Malaysia. Rapid industrialisation means Malaysia needs daytime electricity, and Sumatra will receive power from across the strait at night, when its energy consumption increases.

for automobiles to zero, effective from 2010. The remaining four, including Vietnam, are required to follow suit by 2018.

Singaporean and Malaysian leaders have agreed to soon launch the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Railway project. It is scheduled for completion in 2020.

According to the Asian Foundation report, commodity exports from Cambodia to Thailand and Vietnam will increase 30% from current levels and those from Malaysia and Myanmar to Thailand by 10%.

Singapore to Malaysia Connections

The line will connect the two international cities, around 300km apart, in only 90 minutes. Construction costs, excluding land purchases, are estimated at up to $30 billion. The two countries plan to simplify immigration procedures for commuters by the time the project is completed.

A total of 13.17 million visits were made to Malaysia from Singapore in 2013, up about 20% from five years earlier, while the number heading the other way doubled to 1.28 million. An estimated 400,000 Malaysians work in Singapore. The flow of people between the two countries will sharply increase when the rail line is completed. The project “will make a tremendous difference to the psychology of our people and to the overall interrelationship and cooperation between the two countries,” Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said. Motor Vehicle Tariff Removal

The port of Laem Chabang, Thailand’s biggest trading port, is 80km southeast of Bangkok. It is always busy, as it exclusively handles automobile exports from the country. In 2013, 1.11 million vehicles were shipped from Laem Chabang, up by a factor of about 4.8 over the past decade. “Shipments may exceed the port’s current capacity of 1.5 million vehicles per year in or after 2017,” Yutaka Miyaji, president of NYK Line (Thailand), said. Moves to reduce tariffs within Asean are a boon for Laem Chabang. Six member countries have already phased out tariffs

Export Benefits

If transportation time and cost in Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar are to be reduced to levels seen in Singapore, which has the most efficient system in Asean, benefits could be significant.

Historically Speaking

Countries and businesses cannot ignore the upscaling effect of dismantling national boundaries. Asean’s only choice is to integrate. Foreign Ministers from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore signed the founding Asean Declaration in Bangkok on August 8th 1967. Relations among Southeast Asian nations were turbulent at that time. For example, tensions were boiling between Indonesia and Malaysia a few years before the declaration, and Singapore got independent from Malaysia in 1965.

The East-West confrontation, symbolised by the Vietnam War, prompted Southeast Asian nations to pursue regional solidarity. After signing the declaration, then Indonesian Foreign Minister Adam Malik described Asean as “a region which can stand on its own feet, strong enough to defend itself against any negative influence from outside the region.” Nearly 50 years have since passed. At the Asean summit held May 11th in Myanmar’s capital of Naypyitaw, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung criticised China by name for the launch of oil drilling in the South China Sea. “In face of this extremely serious situation, Vietnam requests that Asean strengthen solidarity and unity,” he said. China’s rapid rise as an economic and military superpower seems to be urging the Asean countries to pull down their borders faster.

News 11 The Kra Isthmus Canal - Just a Distant Pipedream?

In a recent telecast budget meeting, opposition to the Kra Isthmus Canal project was expressed. ‘The Nation’ reported a comment as: “Why should we turn Thailand into an island out of the blue?”

Our question.......what is (or was) the Kra Isthmus Canal Project? The Kra Isthmus Canal would constitute a mega-project, a passageway that would connect the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand at the Isthmus of Kra, Thailand. An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas, in this case the narrow ‘neck’ of Thailand heading south with the provinces of Petchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon featuring. Although the proposal is projected to provide many economic and trade benefits to Thailand and to the region as a whole, steps toward its development have been problematic. Apart from financing issues, there has been much debate over the costs for trade, the costs for the environment, national and regional security concerns as well as major concerns related to political and economic relationships in the region. The current trade route to the Indian Ocean from the South China Sea is past Singapore and through the Malacca Strait. It has the problems of pirates, shipwrecks, haze, sediment and shoals. Its rate of accidents is twice as high as the Suez Canal and four times higher than the Panama Canal. An alternative shorter route is to build a canal connection somewhere south of Chumphon. It would save shipping costs and time as the route is shorter by 1,000 km. The 100 km artificial link would benefit not only China and ASEAN, but also Japan and other countries’ world trade. Mooted throughout Thailand’s history, the Thai Canal project is an infrastructure project that has been at the conceptual development phase for more than three centuries. The project was conceived back in 1677. Until the 19th century, technology constraints made it impossible for the project to proceed. Toward the end of the 19th century, it became technically feasible with several proposals made by France and Britain during the reigns of King Rama IV and V.

The 20th Century saw several attempts made to bring the project back, but came to an end every time for one of three main reasons: lack of funding, national security, and changes of government. The 1980s proved to be the most promising period for the project, though with several hiccups over political issues. The late 1980s saw the involvement of foreign investors from Japan and the U.S. as the project was deemed to be feasible from both the economic and engineering standpoints; it was once again halted at the beginning of the 1990s. This was followed the Asian economic crisis, sending the project six feet under in the late 1990s. The Canal project was reborn in 2001, with the hope of rebuilding the country’s economy and as a platform for sustainability. After many rounds of seminars, debates and a “preparatory” feasibility study, the House of Senates finally reached a consensus on the project in 2005, recommending that the “complete” feasibility study be conducted as soon as possible. China recently joined the proposal for building the canal, saying it would be an alternative to the Malacca Strait and because it badly needs imported oil to fuel its growth. Thailand has much to gain from a Kra Canal project at the same time as Singapore has just as much to lose. The Kra Canal, which has the potential of diverting half the shipping tonnage now calling at Singapore ports up north to Thailand, will have an impact on the Republic’s economy which will be huge and permanent. However it seems it’s been stymied once again and the right time is yet to come.

‘Village Health Volunteers’ – Learning About Stroke Life expectancy in Thailand was just 55 years when the volunteer system began in 1962, it is now over 70. Volunteers are respected local residents who serve voluntarily as connectors between the community and the health care providers to promote health. There are about 750,000 volunteers nation-wide, each responsible for 5 to 15 households. They function as a team at village level. Volunteers get a few perks, including discounts at hospitals and subsidised education for their children going into nursing. The government recently began paying volunteers a monthly stipend of 600 THB. In a show of cooperation and a joint commitment to health education, over 250 Village Health Volunteers spent a day away from regional communities to learn more about stroke in a training session at the City Beach Hotel Hua Hin on 12th June. This program was delivered by staff of the Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin and funded by the Hua Hin Municipality. Mr. Nopporn Vutikul, Hua Hin’s Mayor, with Doctor Veerasak Pongphatanaphun, Deputy Director of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin were there to welcome the volunteers who had come from 35 villages in the region. The theme of the training was “First Aid for Stroke before Transferring to the Doctor”. However as volunteers are also involved in helping villagers with the aftermath of a stroke, including an ongoing disability and a level of paralysis, Doctor Piphat Chumkasean, a specialist in stroke rehabilitation also addressed these issues of caring for victims in the community. Stroke is recognised as a growing concern in rural areas. The role of Village health Volunteers in understanding risk factors, early

signs and rapid responses is an important aspect of their community role. Village Health Volunteers – Providing Better Health Care in Thailand Villages for Over 50 Years

Eight times as many children died in infancy when the system of volunteers commenced. Thailand now has about 12 deaths per 1,000 births, considerably below most of its neighbours.

The Village Health Volunteers exemplify the spirit of community service and selfreliance in a society with a strong tradition of caring for family and neighbours. As one volunteer put it - “It’s in the culture,” she said, “we take care of one another.”

Village Health Volunteers are credited with a significant role in health care moving forward in Thailand. The volunteer system has helped even out inequalities in a society where wealth and medical resources are heavily concentrated in cities. Volunteers spread awareness of disease and screen for chronic illnesses. According to the World Health Organization there is “convincing evidence” that the volunteer corps, which it called the backbone of one of the world’s most successful public health systems, has helped curb many including, dengue and malaria. In campaigns against SARS, they are credited with making Thailand one of the region’s least affected countries. The Village Health Volunteers scheme has been in place for over 50 years and was established by a Thai civil servant returning from a stint at Harvard University. HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

12 GOLF Angry Golfers – With Fatal Results!

Playing with angry golfers who throw clubs, damage greens or other parts of the course or take out their frustrations on the caddie is never much fun.

There’s a legend about an irate golfer who, in a fit of pique pitched his golf clubs into a water hazard, then realized his car keys were in the bag, dived into the water to retrieve it, became entangled in the weeds, and drowned. We’re not sure about the truth of this story, however there are a number of true accounts about angry golfers who have vented their dissatisfaction with the game on an inanimate object, with fatal results. The life of a teenage boy was indeed ended by the very club he used on a bench as a way of venting his displeasure over a bad shot. In 1994, 16-year-old Jeremy Brenno of Gloversville, New York, was killed when he struck a bench with a golf club, and the shaft broke, bounced back at him, and pierced his heart. Brenno had missed a shot on the sixth hole at the Kingsboro Golf Club and looked to vent his frustration by giving the nearby bench a good whack in retaliation. The fatal club was a No. 3 wood. Brenno’s is not the only accidental death by golf

HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

club. In 2005, 15-year-old Rafael Naranjo of Gardner, Massachusetts, expired after playfully swinging a 5-iron he’d found in the street at a fire hydrant. His act caused part of the shaft, along with the head of the club, to break off and lodge in his neck. In 1951, Edward Harrison was playing a round at Inglewood in Kenmore, Washington, when the shaft of his driver broke and pierced his groin. He staggered 100 yards before collapsing and bleeding to death. In 2005, 12-year-old Chandler Hugh Jackson of Frisco, Texas, died in Cunningham, Kentucky, after apparently falling onto a broken golf club at Dogwood Hill club. A piece of the club’s shaft went through the boy’s chest and pierced his aorta. The message is clear. Golf Clubs have a way of taking out their vengeance if they are misused! Take it easy, take a deep breath and then gently return your club back in the bag, no matter how badly you played the shot.

14 GOLF Thaworn Claims Unprecedented 17th Career Victory at Queen’s Cup Thai veteran star Thaworn Wiratchant came from five shots back to win an unprecedented 17th Asian Tour victory with a classy onestroke triumph at the Queen’s Cup on Sunday June 8th. The 47-year-old Thaworn holed a five foot birdie putt on the closing hole to pip overnight leader Poom Saksansin with a final round of five-under-par 66 at the Santiburi Samui Country Club to lift the Queen’s Cup for the second time in three years. “It is so meaningful to me, whether it’s a small or big tournament. At every tournament, I am always trying my best. There was pressure this morning as I wanted to go out there and play some good golf,” said a delighted Thaworn, whose winner’s cheque of US$54,000 lifted his career earnings on Tour to over US$4

million. The unorthodox swinging Thaworn surged into a one-shot lead with a birdie on 14 but made life difficult for himself by dropping a bogey on 17 after missing a four-foot par attempt. With Poom, who was wobbly with an outward 39, fighting back with birdies on 16 and 17 to make it a three-way tie going into the final hole, Thaworn’s experience came through in the end. The home hero found the green in two at the par five 18th hole and with Siddikur and Poom both struggling after hitting wayward approach shots, Thaworn duly rolled in a fivefoot putt much to the delight of his adoring fans. “I knew I had to play well on 18. I wasn’t very confident as I made bogey on 17. I aimed for the green and if it didn’t get on the green, I knew it would be around the green which would give me a birdie chance. I was confident from there onwards,” said Thaworn, who totaled 12-under-par 272 for the week. “The putt for birdie, I felt I could make it. It was hard to say where I was in control. Siddikur played well and Poom was always there. Today, I think I got lucky.” Scores after round 4 of the Queen’s Cup Bangkok Airways - SAT Samui Golf 2014 played at the par 71, 6,823 Yards Santiburi GC course:

Thongchai Wins Nordea Masters In Sweden

It was supposed to be Sweden’s Henrik Stenson show, but Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, displaying the Black Mountain logo, crashed the World No. 2’s party. The 44-yearold took the title in a first hole playoff over Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and Victor Dubuisson of France held in June at Malmo, Sweden. Jaidee posted a closing 65 to book his place in the playoff. He took full advantage to win his sixth European Tour title, but first in more than two years on the first playoff hole when the trio had tied on 16 under totals of 272.

Stenson had a chance to win on the par 5 18th hole in the final round. He stood in the fairway at 15 under. He needed eagle to win outright and birdie to get into the playoff. He didn’t make either. Needing an up and down on the par 5 18th to join the playoff, Stenson pushed his approach shot wide then flubbed his third shot into a bunker. He then failed to hole a 10 footer on his way to a deflating bogey. Stenson has won eight times on the European Tour, but never in his homeland. He was desperate to win, but will now have to wait until next year.

Jaidee, a Lop Buri Province native, hit six birdies and an eagle. His only dropped shot of the day came at the seventh, but a lengthy eagle putt on the 11th was followed by birdies on the 14th and 15th - not that the former paratrooper felt he had done enough coming down the stretch. “I thought 16 under would be second or third with the last hole being a par five,” he added. “Then you never know in a play-off. A play-off was good for me as I finished early so I was very lucky.”

With a Swim Hua Hin teacher Palin: Palin: Palin: Palin:

What is your name, and how long have you been teaching here? My name is Matt Adcock. I am a qualified swimming teacher and a former competitive swimmer from Australia. I have been teaching swimming to students of all ages in Hua Hin for two years now. From your experience in teaching swimming, how quickly do students improve? Everybody is different, and some students improve quicker than others, but what I have found is that after 6 or more lessons most students start to show some dramatic improvements in their confidence and technique. After Children have lessons; do they practice at home, and how often? Most students don’t intentionally practice, but those that have the opportunity to get in the pool between lessons usually do progress faster. Not everyone has a pool at home, but I believe it is important that they get the opportunity to experience swimming and that they do not grow up with the fear of water. How do you want to invite other students who are interested in swimming? I would encourage anyone interested in enrolling their children in swimming lessons or organizing lessons for themselves, to visit our website www.swimhuahin.com or email me direct on swimhuahin@gmail.com or phone 0825911250. Children can begin learning to swim from 9 months of age, or when they start crawling. For adults and older children, it is never too late to learn. Swimming is not only a sport but a skill that will be used throughout your whole life and will make any water activities more enjoyable. HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

It’s not a Straw Hat, It’s a Sisal Hat Sisal handicrafts at the Hup Kapong Cooperative Sisal, with the botanical name of Agave Sisalana, is a plant species widely cultivated in many countries. It yields a strong fibre used in making various products. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as ‘sisal hemp’, because for centuries hemp was a major source of fibre. Sisal is grown chemical-free near the Hup Kapong Royal Project Learning Centre (also known as Sa Ha Khon) just outside Cha-Am. Something like 100 Rai is in crop and harvested as needed for handicrafts production. Products are made by housewives in the community commencing some 40 years ago. It’s a very labour intensive process with individual leaves being pulled through split

bamboo until only the fine sisal fibre remains. After naturally drying the fibre, it is dyed into a range of glorious pastel colours then woven into unique and eye-catching products. The project was initiated by the King of Thailand, and is a good example of best practice in Thai community development. Our host Khun Pen Tip is the Marketing Manager. Her customers are typically handicraft stores and markets throughout Thailand but also export oriented towards China and other Asian countries. She is also very welcoming to casual passers-by. Visitors are welcome to come and see the process with a wide range of very reasonably priced items on sale. Community Justice Centre Launched in Cha-Am

A Centre for Community Justice has been established for the first time in Cha-Am, in response to the national strategic plan of Thailand which aims to create social equality, justice and opportunity under legal systems to tackle social inequality in the country. According to the national strategic plan, a Centre of Community Justice has to be set up throughout Thailand. To successfully do so, the Provincial Court will select a local committee in each sub-district. The major tasks for the Centre are fivefold: 1. Prevention and safeguarding against crime; 2. Receiving and filing complaints made community members; 3. Dealing with conflicts in the community; 4. Enhancing social and community power; 5. Creating good human resources for Thai society. On 16th June, the main structure was organised by an Advisory Board that consists of the Mayor of Cha-Am, public officers of Cha-Am Municipality, representatives of the Phetchaburi Provincial Court and a Board of Committee members. The Board includes local people from different communities in Cha-Am and Members of the Cha-Am Municipal Council. The secretary is a legal advisor to the Cha-Am Municipality.

The Centre is supervised by the Phetchaburi District Justice Centre. The local Centre for Community Justice will carry out the following tasks: Developing, administrating and coordinating tasks assigned by the head office and cooperating with other Justice Centres in smaller local communities. Formulating and completing plans and projects to carry out its role and responsibilities. Enhancing the knowledge and understanding of justice issues of local people. Creating a database that helps the development of the Centre at the subdistrict level. Following and evaluating all the projects proposed. Appointing and designating subcommittee members or teams to complete projects; Giving basic legal advice to local people and finding ways for conflict resolution. Receiving complaints from local people and forwarding them to concerned authorities. Fishing Ban In The Upper Gulf Of Thailand For Two Months The Department of Fisheries has announced the closure of commercial fishing in the U-shape innermost area of the Upper Gulf of Thailand for two months to allow marine life to recover. The closure started on June 1st and will continue until July 31st. Fishing is now banned in this area during the two month closure period.

The two-month closure decision was reached during a meeting between the Department of Fisheries and fishermen’s representatives on April 3rd. It will be first year to implement the agreement which will be continued for three years. The fishing ban in the 4,940 square kilometre area of the Upper Gulf came after growing concern by the Department of Fisheries about the extent of fishing in the area with fishermen using high efficient fishing gear,

modification of fishing equipment and illegal fishing nets; threatening young marine life. The inner most of the Upper Gulf has an inverted U-shape and is the catchment basin of five major rivers; the Bang Pakong, Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, Mae Klong and Phetburi. The U-shape area covers large areas of eight provinces; Prachuab Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, Samut Songkram, Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, Samut Prakarn, Chachoengsao and Chonburi HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

New type of ATM skimmer found in Phuket

Police have warned ATM users to be on the lookout for a new type of skimming device discovered this week in Patong. The warning comes after police received a call alerting them to a suspicious device attached to the card slot of a Siam Commercial Bank ATM. The ATM is a fairly new one with a hemispherical card slot designed to deter skimming. The skimming device, however, was also hemispherical and fitted over the original. It was made of green plastic that precisely matched the colour of the original slot underneath. Police say this is the first time this sort of skimming device has been detected and are working on the theory that it was installed by an international skimmer gang. The gang members would probably send the stolen card information over the Internet to another country where depositors’ accounts would be robbed using cloned cards. Anybody who comes across a suspicious device attached to an ATM is urged to call police immediately. Police believe that the criminals are probably loitering not far from the suspect ATM, and a stake-out of the ATM could result in arrests.

Mayall was best known for his comedy partnership with Adrian “Ade” Edmondson, for his energetic “post-punk” style of acting and as a pioneer of alternative comedy in the early 1980s. He appeared in numerous cult classic sitcoms, including The Young Ones, Blackadder, The New Statesman and Bottom, and in the comedy films Drop Dead Fred and Guest House Paradiso.

An overly-handsome waiter, a snoring girlfriend and the sea being too blue are among some of the bizarre complaints made to hotel staff, according to a survey published.

Considering that people spend most of their working hours in the office, it is important that office space be comfortable and inspiring. After all, how would you feel if you had to work in a dull, drab office? Your productivity would probably suffer.

Mayall was described by Danny Cohen, Director of BBC television, at the time of his death as a “truly brilliant” comedian with a unique stage presence, whose “fireball creativity” inspired a generation of comedy stars.

One customer asked for a discount after his sleep was disturbed by his snoring girlfriend, while another asked for a refund as his dog had had an unhappy stay. Staff in a hotel in London’s Mayfair were taken aback when a client bemoaned the lack of an ocean view. Equally eyebrow raising are some of the requests, including one for a dead mouse. One guest asked for a bowl of crocodile soup, another for a bath of honey while one hungry punter demanded 15 cucumbers a day.

Mayall died at his home in Barnes, London, on 9th June 2014, aged 56. After being called to the house with a report of a sudden death at 13:19, the Metropolitan Police said that the death was not believed to be suspicious. His death was announced by his management team.

Travel search engine Skyscanner quizzed 400 international hotel workers to draw up a list of the top ten unusual grumbles and diva-like demands. Other complaints included sheets being too white, ice cream being too cold, the bath being too big and no steak on a vegetarian menu.

“There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real without me; selfish bastard.” —Ade Edmondson

Thailand has been voted the top wish-list destination in Southeast Asia by members of the London-based travel deals provider Travelzoo. Over 27 million subscribers of the website worldwide were polled. Travelzoo’s followers voted Thailand as the most desirable place to visit in Southeast Asia, which won over a third of the vote at 36%, ahead of Vietnam at 25%, and Cambodia 8%. The poll also found that long-haul destinations remain popular with European travelers, with China coming first in the Asia category and Australia topping the list in the Asia-Pacific region. Tourism, which accounts for about 7% of Thailand’s economy, was badly affected by months of protests that began last year. Operators have expressed optimism that, following the takeover by the Army, the country should be on track for peace and order.

How important is styling your office? Good office interior design brings together look and purpose to make your office inviting and aesthetically appealing. A well-designed office can impress clients as well as create an ambiance that is critical to the productivity of your employees.

By simply adding wallcoverings and carpet tiles to a space, you can transform the entire look into one that suits your image and style. Go minimalistic or vintage on all your walls with a little texture or create a stunning feature wall or office partitions with simple yet bold designs. Carpet tiles are another refreshing way to brighten up your office or commercial space. Carpet tiles are not only cost effective but also durable and hard wearing making it perfect for high traffic areas. Another fantastic way to create the ‘WOW’ factor, especially in reception areas, boardrooms or managerial rooms with digital wallcoverings to add dimension, drama and pops up any space. There are a variety of digital wallcoverings to pick from, architecture, nature, places and more.

Another aspect of interior decoration is to look into the functional needs of the office. Special attention should be given to the boardroom where the tools for presentations are required. One such tool is the WALLTALKER, a dry erase wallcovering or commonly known as Whiteboard where you can write or make illustrations. Walltalkers also provide a flawless backdrop for various presentations such as PowerPoint or video. Besides using walltalkers in a commercial setting, consider it for your home. Perhaps in your child’s bedroom or a study room at home. Expand your child’s creativity by allowing your child to mindmap, doodle or draw out inspirations on this dry erase wallcovering. It is easily cleaned and effortlessly maintained.

22 Your July 2014 Fifa World Cup Guide

The FIFA World Cup 2014 is underway with the elimination of half the qualifying countries and the commencement of the ‘Round of Sixteen’. We have all the results of the elimination round and the qualifying team fixtures. One of the big surprises so far was the failure of world champions Spain to continue on to the next round. However the followers of countries such as Costa Rica are jubilant, with results exceeding expectations. The highlight of the opening round (for some) was the 5-1 win by the Netherlands over Spain. The Netherlands were tipped by some to have little chance but with this performance they have certainly made many others sit up and take notice. The goal of the opening round was arguably Tim Cahill’s volley in Australia’s 2-3 loss to The Netherlands. Cahill said he didn’t expect to score, thinking the ball was heading straight for the keeper!

CABECAO, THE PSYCHIC TURTLE PREDICTS WORLD CUP WIN FOR BRAZIL

Citizens of the Australian City of Melbourne looking to the heavens could have been forgiven for believing they had witnessed the Second Coming as a 46 metre high Christ the Redeemer statue emerged through the mist. Jesus was seen wearing an Australian soccer football jersey with the slogan #KEEPTHEFAITH. The betting firm, Sportsbet said its replica of Brazil’s world famous landmark will give a muchneeded dose of divine intervention for our Socceroos this week. But the statue attracted criticism for its association between religion and gambling. Deputy Premier Peter Ryan said the balloon promotion was disrespectful. Sportsbet PR manager Shaun Anderson defended the stunt saying it was about sending a message of support to the team in Brazil using a Brazilian icon. “Let’s be honest — the Socceroos need divine intervention to progress past their three group games so the message we’re aiming to get across is that for all Aussies to keep the faith in the Socceroos,” he said.

A Fiery Night at The Electric Mango This was another Saturday night out in Hua Hin where the atmosphere was sparkling and magnetic at the Electric Mango Lounge Garden & Bar ‘Soft Opening’. Together with fire dancers, ladies of the town brought a sense of glamour, luminosity and intense femininity to the evening. This was an explosion of colour with a mixture of flora and fauna, jungle, gardens and islands. Something like a secret garden atmosphere with pastel pink and bright fuchsia tones where it seemed like we were plunged into a candy store, really feminine. Or perhaps a tropical garden spirit with the number one accessory trend of this summer, ‘the flower crown’, as the perfect choice to complement your gown. But to be the best dressed of the night and to put ‘fire on the grass’ you had to be in waterfall graphics print like the gorgeous Birthday Girl. My second choice was that long electric blue gown! What made it different from others??!!... The right choice of accessories with those turquoise feathers earrings looking as gorgeous as a flower of paradise!

Star Alliance: More Choice For Globetrotters

Additional Economy Class Round the World Fare Levels New Lower Business Class Round the World Fare

The Star Alliance network has expanded its offer to globetrotters through the introduction of four additional Round the World (RTW) fare levels. Customers can now choose from a total of 14 RTW fares; three for travel in First Class, four for travel in Business Class and seven for travel in Economy Class.

Nonthawan “Maeya” Thongleng, a 22-yearold model from Surat Thani was crowned this year’s Miss Thailand World on Saturday night. In a break with recent tradition, she was warmly welcomed by the press and Internet.

fair skin and a Eurasian heritage have often proved an advantage. “I’m happy with her! Enough with the fair skin,” one twitter user wrote. “She has a unique look, and she can answer questions very well. We might get into the finals after all.”

Maeya is a model and award-winning luk thung singer who will represent Thailand on Dec. 14 at the international Miss World contest in London

Others dreamed of a day we can quit our collective addiction to skin bleach.

Maeya seems to have won Thailand’s heart with a clean profile and waifish measurements of 31-23-31 inches, 173 centimetres and 49 kilograms. One of the most-discussed qualities of Maeya is her beautiful tan skin, which some hope marks a change in Thailand’s pageant culture, where

“I’m glad this tan-skinned girl will get a chance to represent Thai beauty on the international stage” another twitter user commented “I hope this will help get rid of the white-skin craze among Thais,” Meanwhile, second and third places went to Venus Nantachai and Chatrika Sitthiprom, respectively.

The most significant change is that for Economy Class the applicable fare is now determined through a combination of total number of stops and total mileage used. The best price option is the one which allows customers to travel for a maximum of 26,000 miles and make anywhere between three and five stops. Up to now, the higher mileage levels in Economy Class – 29,000, 34,000 or 39,000 miles – allowed a maximum of 15 stops. With the introduction of the new fare levels, customers can now select fewer stops in return for a lower price. For example, a traveller using a 29,000 mileage RTW ticket can now opt to make only seven stops and hence save 10 per cent on average. Travel in Business Class has been made even more attractive, with passengers now being able to select a lower fare covering up to 26,000 miles. This is in addition to the already existing fare levels of 29,000, 34,000 or 39,000 miles which will continue to be offered. The number of stops allowed also remains unchanged for all Business Class RTW fare levels, with a minimum of three to a maximum of 15 stops.

Travellers wishing to fly in First Class can continue to select between the 29,000, 34,000 and 39,000 fare levels. To put the mileage levels in perspective, the circumference of the Earth measured at the Equator is approximately 24,901 miles. The fare levels offered allow the customer to select the mileage requirement which best suits their personal travel needs. Actual fares vary by market and, in general, offer better value for money than purchasing individual one-way tickets on separate airlines to cover the same itinerary. Children between the age of two and 11 pay 75 per cent of the applicable adult fare, while infants under two who do not occupy a seat can be taken along for 10 per cent of the applicable adult fare.

‘On My Own In Hua Hin’ – An International Hit? Tala is a brilliantly talented newcomer to the burgeoning UK music scene. The Londonbased singer, songwriter, and producer is one the most exciting new artists to have emerged in 2014, combining hard-hitting beats and bright melodies into a uniquely modern package. Her latest contribution was released in June. “On My Own In Hua Hin” is a song that is bright and catchy, but underpinned by a powerful electronic production. Here’s an introduction from Tala “On my first visit to Asia last year I went to Thailand and Singapore. I’d never been to Asia so I didn’t know what to expect. I was so inspired by the two weeks that I spent there, which wasn’t enough. It was incredible.” “The sounds you hear at the beginning of ‘On My Own In Hua Hin’ are from that trip. I filmed some really awful footage on my iPhone at this Thai wedding. It was a procession and they had the drummers and stuff, it was all very traditional. They must have thought I was a real weirdo. But when I got back I was like, I’ve got to make something happen with this. It was just a proper moment where we were in Hua Hin, right by the sea and it was this amazing Thai band. So I made another version of ‘On My Own,’ chopped up and with these sounds from Thailand.” This is not a song which is gentle or traditional in the Thai music way. It’s a song that begs to be played loudly. it’s a defiant track, with Tala stating that she doesn’t need anyone else’s approval to do what she does. “I don’t need your time / I don’t need you / I do it for myself / Got nothing to prove,” she sings over a pounding drum beat and bass tinged synths. It’s unclear if the song is meant for

International Aids Conference 2014 a former lover or a less specific group of doubters. Tala lays down some seriously impressive electronic production. Striking, layered instrumentation combines with slithering synths as Tala’s strong vocals come into the spotlight. Want to check out a sound preview of this song? Go to http://summerinthewinter. com/listen-tala-on-my-own-in-hau-hin/ , or maybe on the local disco playlist soon? P.S., it’s a pity they couldn’t spell Hua Hin! We also need to let Tala know; the next time she visits Hua Hin there’s no need to be on her own.

A declaration affirming that non-discrimination is fundamental to an evidence-based response to HIV and effective public health programs has been announced by the organisers of the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014), to be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 20-25 July 2014.

“The enforcement of discriminatory and criminalising laws and policies against key affected populations is alarming,” said Professor Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, AIDS 2014 International Chair, President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) and Director of the Regulation of Retroviral Infections Unit at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. “Such practices clearly violate basic human rights and heavily undermine HIV programs by posing barriers to access to HIV prevention, treatment and care.”

All individuals and organizations involved in the global response to HIV and AIDS are encouraged to sign the declaration at: http://www.aids2014. org/declaration.aspx and to share it with their networks In preparation for the conference. 28 The Masters of Swing The culmination of the inaugural Centara World Masters Golf Championship 2014 took place poolside at the Centara Grand Beach Resort on the evening of Friday 20th June.

This followed four days of golf competition at four regional Golf Course; Banyan, Black Mountain, Majestic Creek and Imperial Lakeview. This night was a celebration of the Event’s success, with prize presentations, a sumptuous dinner and live entertainment.

The mood of the evening was one of exuberance and jubilation. Our conversations with the party-goers were laced with lavish praise of the organisers and the quality of the golfing, competition and the social scene. “Everything has been perfect” was a common comment. The Hawaiian theme of the evening meant that vivid colours and hula dancing were everywhere. Many nationalities were present from every continent including those from India, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and Singapore apart from Thai people. The event attracted 500 golfers who travelled to Hua Hin from 23 countries, representing 193 golf clubs. The most visible (and vocal) party goers were Australians with something like 40% of the golfers hailing from ‘down under’. The only problem for the organisers with a large Australian contingency was to under estimate the ‘beer budget’. Why so many Australians? Apart from a history of 18 years of managing this competition in Australia, holding the Event at this time of the year meant that Australians could escape the winter at home. It does get cold in Australia! Local promoters and businesses concerned about the low season please take note! Australians love golf, to compete and to party. The winners? With 15 tournament divisions based on age and handicap; too many to list! If you would like to check out those featuring and get more information about this premier event visit www.thaialndworldmasters.com Next year’s Masters is booked for 14th – 20th June 2015, although it’s likely to be fully booked early as testament to the success of this year’s success.

The peak torque is available from 1,400 to 4,500 rpm, so drivers can pull away and overtake easily.

Thailand’s Auto Exports May Set New Record Thailand may break its automobile export record by delivering 1.16-1.22 million vehicles to other countries this year, according to the Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC). Kasikorn predicts that auto exports can rise 6-11 per cent from Thailand’s auto export volume of 1.09 million vehicles last year. Statistics show that during the first four months of this year, Thailand exported about 357,000 vehicles, rising by 1.5 per cent year-on-year.

KRC attributes the increase to investors’ persistent confidence in Thailand and other positive factors including Thailand’s expansion of its export-oriented automobile production, the global economic recovery, the baht depreciation and new markets like North America. The centre predicts that exports of passenger cars will grow faster than that of commercial vehicles thanks to new markets. Australia, the Philippines and the Middle East region will continue to be the main markets where the export will grow well. Some emerging markets like New Zealand, the United States, the CLMV group (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam), and Peru are likely to support Thai automobile exports in the future. Kasikorn warned that Thailand’s export of passenger cars to Indonesia and Malaysia dropped significantly as investment in vehicle production rose in these countries.

Chinese Inventor Builds a Scooter That Doubles As a Suitcase

A Chinese inventor has developed a rechargeable scooter with a suitcase which helps in transporting his belongings and himself. Equipped with a GPS navigator, a burglar alarm and a horn, this seven kilogram vehicle can carry two adults and travel with a speed of 20 kilometres per hour for a distance of 50 to 60 kilometres on a full charge. He Liangcai, who recently obtained a patent for this invention, said he spent over 10 years to create the “urban scooter”. He suggests such a device can also be used for in city travel. The vehicle consists of a stripped down electric scooter embedded into the suitcase. The rider strides the rectangular luggage and grabs handlebars that control the throttle, breaks and lights. Liangcai, originally a farmer, said he got the idea when he forgot his luggage on his way to accept an award for an innovative car safety system in the US.

Wellness 31 Why we make excuses? Most people have the desire to improve their life; be it financially, emotionally, mentally or physically. However often health comes in last place. People put in endless hours working to make more money, learning to gain more knowledge or even going on meditation retreats to find calmness and serenity; but avoid being physically active and starting a training program that would give them the body and health they desire. Everyone now knows the dangers of inactivity, being overweight, too sedentary and overeating. Why then is it so difficult to live a healthy lifestyle and to maintain a training program that becomes a way of life?

trends and make ourselves whole and complete on the physical level. We do not like feeling the “pain of EFFORT”. We all think training and getting back into shape is painful and it often times is! So we avoid it like the plague. We can tolerate the low level consistent pain of being overweight, but we have a much more difficult time tolerating the pain of Effort. But this pain is temporary and needed. When you see a change, a difference in yourself, you begin to understand that struggling with your weight has kept you from really enjoying life itself. I am not at all against drinking, having a good time, eating a great meal or having fun. I only suggest balance and moderation in all things; even exercise. At POWERFIT 102, the only thing you have to do is show up; we will help you with the rest. We will train you in your initial sessions, usually for the first month or so. We teach you how to go through the basic functional fitness full body exercises. This is a part of your membership.

All too often I hear, “it’s too difficult”, “it’s so hard”, “it hurts so much”. When people start a new training program, they may feel some muscular soreness; a common physical response. But mentally, it turns people off; for reasons only they know. They don’t like feeling their body is uncomfortable, yet carrying around an extra 20 kgs. or more, feeling bloated and weak is ok. Dietary Habits For Healthy Seniors So where can we get some fibre? Try some cooked or baked vegetables, fresh fruit and high-fibre breakfast cereals as these are some denture-friendly ways to get fibre in the diet. Beans and black-eyed peas are also nutritious and inexpensive.

Another problem, especially in hot climates such as in Thailand, is insufficient intake of water. The elderly have a decreased thirst and often do not get enough fluids in their diet. Getting plenty of fluids helps prevent constipation, because the bowel is a water absorber. The constipation decreases when fluids are taken generously. Milk, tea, coffee, soda, ice cream and soup all count as fluids.

If you are one of the lucky ones, you are getting older. (The alternative is that you are already dead!) The average age of westerners is increasing. The more developed countries in Asia are also showing the same trends. Grey power is becoming an important factor, with the marketing of goods and services designed for this increasing niche market. That’s the up side, unfortunately there is a down side. That is just simply that the longer you live, the more parts of you that end up wearing out. Knees, hips, ankles, wrists, fingers come straight to mind. And if you didn’t look after yourself some years ago, your past indiscretions can surely come round to bite you now! And talking about ‘biting’, one of the organs that can show the ravages of time is your digestive organ, the gut. As the body ages, the gastrointestinal tract changes and people tend to develop more problems with constipation for one. The pundits will tell you a high-fibre diet can prevent that, but many elderly people, especially those with dentures, do not want to eat the seed-filled or crunchy food that is typically high in fibre. They go for soft food that is easily chewed, but is often high in fat.

Exercise plays a part here too. Get more physical, not less. The amount of exercise needed depends on the person, but in general, people need to step up their activity as they get

older. Elderly people often do the opposite, because of bad knees or arthritis. Instead of becoming a couch potato, they need to walk, bicycle, swim, garden and find other ways to stay on the move. As we age, our calorie needs decrease due to a drop in muscle strength from taking less physical activity (see above). However, vitamin and mineral needs may stay the same or even increase if the body absorbs them less efficiently. The daily calorific requirement varies from person to person, but as a very rough guide, males need to drop their calorie intake by around 20 percent after the age of retirement (2,500 cals down to 2,100 cals) and women from 2,000 down to 1,800 cals. There are many foods and ingredients needed to retain optimum health, including those high in Vitamin C, such as blackberries,

strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, peaches, mango, cantaloupe melon, and apples. Vegetables high in Vitamin A (beta-carotene) and Vitamin C including carrots, squash, sweet potato, tomatoes, spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, onions, leeks and avocado. Fish should also be included as many are rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids and high in Vitamin E, like salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, tuna and trout. It is also a good idea to substitute white fish in place of red meat. Some nuts and seeds are also rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids and high in Vitamin E, including unsalted nuts, walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts and almonds, and seeds such as poppy seeds, sunflower, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds. Proteins are also important in the diet for seniors and should include eggs, white fish, milk, cheese, yogurt, lean meat, chicken, beans and lentils. Fibre can come from lentils, chick peas (garbanzo beans), brown rice, whole wheat bread, wheat germ, whole wheat cereals and whole wheat crackers. A good spread of items, different dishes every day, plenty of water and moderation in all things seems to be the answer. A glass of red wine also gets our vote! HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

Why Do We Need Vitamins and Minerals? The pace of life has increased over time for both work and leisure. Sad but true, this change has lead to many health problem, either because of stress, not eating on time, not resting enough or even not having time to exercise.

One of the solutions to solve these problems is to take supplements in order to compensate for the things that the body is missing. I do not recommend or support taking supplements as I think it is not the right solution to solve the problem in the long term. However, if it becomes necessary it is important that we know how to take supplements properly and for the most benefit. But in this article I will talk about vitamins and minerals which are the nutrients that our body cannot live without. Vitamins are the nutrients which our body needs and requires to work properly, but our body only needs vitamins as micronutrients. This means the need for smaller quantities than other nutrients such as fat, protein or carbohydrates. We receive vitamins from the food that we take and from the synthesis system within our own body. The main purpose of vitamins is to create or transport other nutrients for the body to use. For example; vitamin D is one of the vitamins which pass on calcium for our body to build bones and vitamin K is a part of the process of blood clotting when our body has a wound. Therefore a deficiency of vitamins will cause our body to be malfunction. Vitamins can be divided into two types. The first type is Fat Soluble Vitamins which are vitamin A, D, E and K. These vitamins can be saved and stored in our body. The second type is Water Soluble Vitamins which are vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B11, B12, B15 and vitamin C. These vitamins are excreted from the body quickly causing a deficiency of these vitamins very easily as they cannot be saved and stored. Minerals ( or inorganic compound ) are elements in food. Minerals play many important roles in our body e.g. being a body structure; an element of cells, tissues and nerves; an element of enzymes, hormones and vitamins. Minerals also control the operation of every muscle in every organ of our body. However, in the same way as vitamins, minerals are only HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

needed as micronutrients. If we do not receive enough minerals, our body will not grow properly which might cause some disorders/malfunctions. The most basic source of minerals is food. Examples of minerals which are important for our body are calcium, iodine or iron. Minerals can be divided into a macro minerals type and a trace minerals type. Macro minerals are the minerals that our body needs in a quantity of more than 100 mg per day. These minerals are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium, sulphur and chloride. Calcium is the mineral which can be detected the most in our body as it’s the composition of our bones. Other minerals that can be detected are phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sodium. Trace minerals are the minerals that our body needs in a smaller quantity of less than 11 mg per day. These minerals are iron, zinc, selenium, manganese, copper, iodine, chromium, cobalt, fluoride, molybdenum and vanadium. Even though our body only needs these minerals in a small quantity, they are still important to our body. The details of the benefits, the sources or the types of food which contain vitamins and minerals will be shared in the next article. Should you have any query or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact “Healthlab Medical Laboratory”; the blue building located next to PTT gas station.

Goody Bags for Babies: Singapore

Babies born in Singapore in 2015 will get goody bags marking the city state’s golden jubilee. After a month-long vote in which 20,000 people participated, a special medallion or coin was selected from a list of 15 ideas that included shawls, clothes and toys, Channel News Asia reports.

like this before,” Sergeant Reece Munro tells the Otago Daily Times, adding the marijuana has a street value of about NZ$100. While the origin of the cannabis remains a mystery, Munro says that - until now - he’d never stopped to think about the sniffing potential of cats. “We certainly have police dogs trained to detect drugs - this might be something police could explore in the future,” he says. Divorce Parties Take Off: Iran

A fictional character associated with Borat a controversial spoof documentary about a Kazakh journalist - has found its way into a guide book handed out by the Kazakh embassy in Washington, reports say. The hard-back volume mentions someone called Billy Sexcrime in a section about Kazakh culture and traditions, suggesting he is a popular artist in Kazakhstan, the Washington City Paper reports. In fact, he is a character from Borat, a film about a made-up Kazakh TV reporter - Borat Sagdiev who travels to the US to learn about the American way of life. The book was being handed out at a Passport DC event, when embassies open their doors to the public.

“Some looked for items that would see the most practical use for parents; others chose items that would provide historical significance when the baby grew up and looked at the gift some 20 years from now,” says the government’s agency for population and talent. The package will also come with a commemorative birth certificate and other gifts, government minister Grace Fu says.

Billy Sexcrime is never actually seen on screen, but he is mentioned in a promotional interview given in 2006 by Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor who plays Borat. “It’s unclear how a Borat character snuck into a Kazakhstan embassy publication, whether due to an in-house mistake or prank by a third party,” the newspaper says. The Kazakh media are also confused. Time.kz website says no Kazakh performer appears to exist under the name Billy Sexcrime. “The same section about modern music also mentions someone called Super Star. We’ve never heard of them either,” it says. The Kazakh embassy hasn’t commented on the matter.

‘Hero’ Driver Stops Bus to Soothe Girl: Sweden

Sacha Baron Cohen has been criticised for the way the film pokes fun at Kazakhstan. “We consider this movie offensive, a complete lie and nonsense,” one film distribution manager said after Borat premiered in 2006. And Deputy Foreign Minister Rakhat Aliyev invited Cohen to visit the country so he could see for himself that “women drive cars, wine is made of grapes, and Jews are free to go to synagogues”. Aliyev said at the time: “I understand that the feelings of many people are hurt by Cohen’s show. But we must have a sense of humour and respect the creative freedom of others.” Craze for Hamster Bottoms: Japan

The Japanese obsession with all things cute has reached new heights, as a craze for pictures of hamsters’ bottoms gains momentum. More than 40,000 copies of photo books of “hamuketsu” - a word that’s a mash-up of the Japanese for hamster and bottom - have already been sold, and one of the publishers has set up a Facebook page dedicated to furry hamster behinds. The page has thousands of fans and hundreds of photos have been uploaded so far. “The great thing about hamuketsu is that it is delightfully cute,” a spokesman for Basilico, one of the publishers, tells the Wall Street Journal. “I can’t stop smiling when I see these bottoms.” Another book on the topic is called Hamuketsu: So Cute You Could Faint.

Faced with a falling birth rate, Singapore has a raft of government packages designed to encourage marriage and parenthood. Despite lower numbers of newborns, government statistics suggest that around 40,000 gift packs may be given out next year.

A driver who stopped his bus to comfort a young girl crying in the street is being hailed in Sweden, after a photo of his act went viral on the internet. Andre Grandin interrupted the bus journey between Vara and Lidkoping in southern Sweden when he saw 10-year-old Emilia Behrendtz crying at the side of the road, the Expressen newspaper reports. After comforting the girl, witnesses say he climbed back on to the bus “without a word” and drove on. It later transpired that the girl had been upset by some other children. “It came from nowhere,” says passenger Emma Gustafsson of the moment when the bus stopped. “We didn’t know what was going on. But then we saw that he walked up to a crying girl sitting on the road. It was really cute.” Gustafsson took a photo of the incident, which she shared on Twitter. After four days it had been retweeted 4,600 times and marked as a “favourite” by 7,300 people, with a further 50,000 interactions on Facebook. After he was tracked down by the Swedish press, the bus driver told Expressen it’s in his nature to help when he sees someone crying or in pain. He was reunited with Emilia for a photo opportunity, and Grandin says strangers have sent flowers to his home. But he doesn’t think his actions were anything out of the ordinary. Grandin believes it’s people’s duty to stop if they see a child lying on the ground Cat Brings Bag of Cannabis Home: New Zealand

The phenomenon is the latest development of an aspect of modern Japanese culture known as kawaii, meaning “cute” or “adorable”. The aesthetic rivals Japanese art’s traditional devotion to minimalism and nature, and is prevalent in everything from fashion to music.

The parties sometimes require extravagant preparations, complete with black roses and huge cakes, the conservative Jomhuri-ye Eslami newspaper reports. “You go to a florist to order a bouquet of black roses. Next you come to us to order invitation cards,” one card shop owner tells the paper.

Officials in the capital Tehran have recently expressed concern about the trend of celebrating divorce, the pro-government Iran newspaper says, and Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi, one of the country’s top conservative clerics, has spoken out over the issue. Last year, Iran saw a 4.6% rise in divorce cases, and a 4.4% decline in marriage rates. Nearly 20% of Iranian marriages now end in divorce. Catholic Church ‘Adopt a Priest’ Ads: France

The mud-slinger was later identified as Castislav Sam Bracanov, a veteran anti-royalist protester who was fined NZ$200 for his manure plot when the prince and the duchess visited New Zealand in November 2012. He was previously arrested in 1994 after spraying air freshener at Prince Charles. “I’ll do it again and again,” Bracanov said after his 2012 conviction. “I’ll win one day.” Bracanov has a history of protesting against the British royal family. Traffic Light Woman for Berlin: Germany

Politicians in Berlin’s central district want to modernise pedestrian crossings by adding a female companion to the iconic Ampelmann traffic light, it’s reported.

The Social Democrat party is asking for an Ampelfrau to be introduced, to represent the self-assurance of the modern-day woman, the German edition of The Local says. “It’s about equality,” district SPD leader Martina Matischok says. “We don’t want to replace the Ampelmann, we want to complete him.” Matischok also thinks any female equivalent should not be sporting any stereotypically sexist attributes - such as pony tails, skirts or high heels. Other countries have also experimented with alternatives to the walking man image. But the Ampelmann is considered by some to be a design classic and international cult phenomenon. Designed by Karl Peglau, it is seen as one of the positive symbols of Communist-era East Germany, and has been revived on all kinds of merchandise from coffee mugs to lamps.

The Catholic Church in France is offering worshippers the chance to “adopt a priest” in an attempt to raise funds. The campaign, launched by six dioceses in Normandy, apes an existing French dating website called Adopt a Guy. The campaign says men of the cloth of all ages are available from trainee seminary priests to retired (but still active) pastors - the 20 Minutes news website reports. The video promises “divine products” for potential adopters, and site users are given the chance to help pay for everyday expenses such as meals, clothes and transport. The online campaign at adoptuncure.com targets 18-40 year-olds, and is aimed at reviving the dwindling number of people giving to the church. According to French newspaper Liberation, donations are one of the main sources of the Catholic Church’s income. The diocese of Rouen, which reported 15,000 regular donors in 2013, loses 500-700 each year, and relies on those remaining to be increasingly generous.

Politician Splattered with Mud at Court: New Zealand

The worried owner, who has not been identified, apparently rang the authorities in Dunedin on the county’s South Island after she found the bag with 5g (0.2oz) of cannabis inside. ‘’You hear of cats bringing dead birds and rats home, but certainly in my career I’ve never seen anything

TV New Zealand showed what it called a bucket of “foul-smelling” mud hitting MP John Banks on the arm. The incident delayed the start of the trial, while Banks changed into a new suit. The MP is accused of filing a false electoral return after a failed bid in 2010 to become the mayor of Auckland. The court alleges Banks knew about NZ$65,000 of campaign donations from Kim Dotcom, who started the now-closed file sharing site Megaupload, and another media group which were listed as “anonymous”.

“I don’t miss you at all,” says one invitation, quoting the lyrics of a Persian pop hit. “I swear I will not fall in love again as long as I live. Even if I do, it’s ok, as long as it’s not with you,” the lyrics continue inside the card. The demand for divorce cards has been going up over the past two years, another shop owner tells the Shahr-e Khabar news website.

A retired, “still very active” priest is offered in a half-price sale

A woman in New Zealand has called the police after her cat left a bag of drugs on her doorstep, it’s been reported.

HUA HIN TODAY, JULY 2014

The divorce rate in Iran has been rising in recent years. In Iranian cities a new kind of celebration the divorce party - seems to be gaining popularity as more marriages meet a premature end.

A man fined for plotting to throw manure over Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall has struck again, this time hurling a bucket of mud at a New Zealand MP as he arrived at court to face electoral fraud charges.

Even in 1961, when the original Ampelmann was proposed, his appearance was a point of contention. The paper says Peglau’s first ideas for a hairdo - a side-parting or curly mop - were rejected as too Hitler-like or stereotypically Bavarian. The final, much-loved image was inspired by a straw hat. Kitten Train of Friendship: Ukraine

A train carriage adorned with kittens and a chequered background is due to make its maiden voyage between the Ukrainian city of Lviv in the west and Odessa in the south-east as a gesture of friendship. The venture has been put together by activists in the west who are trying to dispel rumours about anti-Russian neo-Nazi groups that have been circulating in the east, ZIK TV in Lviv reports. On the outside, the carriage has kittens, a patterned background, and a message saying “keep calm”. Inside, the carriage is furnished with teddy bears, books and cushions donated by the public. The Public Sector of the Lviv Maydan, a proEU group in the west, says it hopes the train will promote commonly-shared values such as “cosiness, calm and the long-forgotten feeling of confidence in what is going to happen tomorrow”, according to their Facebook page.

36 Pet Care How to feed your dog For this issue, we has made some research into the food we are giving to our dogs but before to go into details, it’s important to know the different types of commercial dog foods available and how to choose between them. While many people prefer to make their own dog food or even feed a raw food diet to their dogs, most dog owners still prefer to feed kibble or canned dog food. Most dogs can live a long and healthy life on commercial dog food, but you do need to take some precautions. Many commercial dog food brands use very poor quality ingredients that have even been linked to allergies in dogs. In some cases, ingredients have been linked to certain types of cancer and other serious illnesses.

How To Choose Dog Food? Even with all the dog food reviews we have made below available there is no substitute for educating yourself and having the ability to find the best dog food on your own. It’s not as hard as you think and you don’t have to be a nutrition expert to know which dog food is best. So follow your instinct and also don’t hesitate to buy a small bag first (some shops in town will have “trial size” bags) and make your dog to try it out. If he approves go for it.

Ever wonder what the differences are between kibble and canned dog food? The debate about which type of food is better for dogs has been raging since the beginning of the dog food industry. This is where we go over the pros and cons of each as well as how to compare dry and wet foods. From our personal point of view. A 3/4 of kibble with a 1/4 of canned which will make everybody happy and doggy too! ;-)

Grain Free Dog Food Facts Grain free dog food is the newest craze among many dog owners. Since dogs receive no nutritional value from grain, some dog owners are worried about the high levels of wheat, corn, and other types of grain or plant based materials found in most popular commercial dog foods. Just make sure when you pick your brand, the majority should be “meat” at 1/2 vs grains and other fats to the total portion.

Milo - Thai Dog - 3 months old has been our personal assistant for this food reviews take a look at the following specially tested and approved or not by Mister Milo! From the best (5paws to the worst 1paw)

Nature’s Variety Instinct (Duck & Turkey Meal) Nature’s Variety has 2 main lines of food, with Instinct being its grain-free formula, which I’ll focus on here. As expected, the protein pourcentage is pretty high (35%) and it’s loaded with quality meat meals (4 of them). Notice they are meat “meals” and not just labelled as “chicken” or “duck”. Because they’re weighing them post-dehydration, it’s an accurate statement as to just how much meat is in the product.

Tapioca is an interesting ingredient, but it serves the purpose of what potatoes typically do, which is to provide a starch and help bind the food together so it doesn’t fall apart. It’s a fine ingredient. Also, pumpkinseeds may seem off to some, but they are actually quite a good fiber source and help provide lineolic acid for skin & coat. What’s more, the line-up of fruits and veggies is present to help suppliment the vitamin HUA HIN HIN TODAY, TODAY, JULY JUNE2014 2014 HUA

Skin Allergies In Dogs Skin allergies in dogs are usually caused by improper nutrition and can normally be solved by changing to a different diet. The most common form of allergies in dogs is skin allergies. This can cause a great deal of discomfort for your dog, which can be concerning for any dog owner. Before you run out and start buying expensive dog allergy medications with nasty side-effects, try out some of the tips we present here. Imagine if all you had to do was change your dogs diet? Most likely, it really is that easy! Plain Steam rice and chicken broth will work all the time from sickness to skin allergies.

Sprinkle parsley on your dog’s food for fresher breath.

Reasons Why A Dog Won’t Eat There could be many reasons why your dog won’t eat and usually, it’s nothing to be concerned with. Most dogs will have episodes where they do not want to eat their kibble or regular food. The majority of the time, they are simply being picky eaters and they know if they “starve” themselves, eventually you’ll give in and give a tastier meal to them like human food or treats. Other times, a dog might simply have a lack of appetite as happens to humans occasionally. If it last more than couple of days don’t wait and ask some advices to your vet.

Feeding A Puppy

Kibble Vs. Canned Dog Food

Dog food review

Useful tricks around food and feeding your pet

So you went out and got yourself a cuddly, cute, adorable little puppy. That’s great! But feeding a puppy can be more of a challenge than some people expect, especially if you’re a first time dog owner. Opt for the puppy selection of the brand you like for at least until he reaches 10 to 12 months old.

An inexpensive and easy summer treat for dogs: Cut up apples in chicken broth and freeze in an ice cube tray.

Feeding Senior Dogs We all wish dogs could live forever, or at the very least, live longer. Unfortunately, most dogs have a very short life expectancy. As they age, we want to do everything possible to extend their life while at the same time, reducing the pains and discomforts that come with aging. Many dog food companies market special blends for senior dogs claiming a large number of benefits. Unfortunately, it is not always the case, so sometimes it is just good to go with what your dog is used to.

count. All in all, this is a very solid food and I’m glad to now be aware of it.

are used here are not so great. This includes “Poultry by-product meal”, which tells us they don’t want to let us know exactly what bird’s feathers they put into this food. They also use the infamous “animal digest”, which I pray you never have to watch being made. Oh, and caramel color, let’s not forget about that.

Science Diet (Lamb & Rice) They use lamb meal as the top ingredient and that’s great. A “meal” at the top is the best thing to see. Brewers rice, however, is not a good 2nd fiddle, and neither is rice flour at 3rd. Rice is a good grain, if the company uses it as such. The inclusion of corn gluten meal and wheat is also shameful, because Science Diet knows very well that the benefits of these ingredients are slim to none, while the drawbacks can be great.

Pedigree (with Lamb & Rice) Chicken meal is first, leading off with a meat “meal” product is the best way to start. It means it’s from the good part of the animal and is rich in protein. The next three grains are all good choices, a Chicken fat is way better than beef tallow, so that’s a welcome addition to add fat to the food. There is corn gluten meal. They have used no by-products, very few fillers, and a quality meat source. They’ve also used a fish (anchovy) oil for the Omega fatty acids, which is awesome. It misses out on 4 paws, but still earns a respectable 3 paws.

To their credit, they do use barley and soybean oil, which are pretty good ingredients. Flaxseed is also very welcome as a source for Omega fatty acids. This will not even come close to trumping the fact that they only have one meat source alongside tons of grains, however. For the money, you can do so much better it’s really not even funny.

Royal Canin (Medium Adult) This is the only food I’ve seen that most people have heard of that actually seems to have a solid lineup of ingredients, and it honestly surprises me. This is as good as Science Diet.

Put a ball in your dog’s food bowl if he or she eats too fast.

No matter what, nobody can take away from Pedigree that they have an awesome marketing campaign. First, the name just sounds distinguished, and it should, with what being a “pedigree” means in the dog world. Plus, they have that cute slogan of “Dogs rule”. I’m sure dog owners eat that one up. Due to loose regulations by the pet food industry as to what percentage of an ingredient a product needs to contain to be advertised, they can actually put it that low and still tell us it’s a lamb and rice food.

Purina One (Lamb & Rice) Purina One for dogs avoids a 1 paw rating because they did manage to put lamb as their first ingredient. The inclusion of oatmeal as a high-quality grain is appreciated, but it’s way too far down the line from where it should be. Now, let’s get into where it goes wrong. They insist on going the cheap and nonnutritional way. Then, there are two corn products in a row. Besides the lamb, the other ways animals

We have chicken by-products, ensuring your dog gets the proper number in his or her diet. Some wheat, since they apparently couldn’t spring for a a good grain like rice. And, of course, we have corn gluten meal….which I’ve covered extensively in other reviews.
