3 From The Managing Editor April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand and it’s time for us all to take some common sense precautions to stay in good shape. We are also hearing about water shortages and so please use water wisely.

Hua Hin Today has continued to grow over the 13 years since the first edition. Below are the important ten team members that ensure that the content and quality continues to improve. The latest member is Ornusha Pinvorasarn, the newly appointed General Manager, who has just arrived and will be getting out and about in February. We will be featuring her in the next edition so that you can get to know her more.

However this month Songkran heralds wetter months to come, so it’s also time to rejoice and join in the fun of the Thai New Year. The Thai football season is underway and we’re glad to report on the opening success of our local team Vana Nava Hua Hin City. Part of the success of any sporting team comes from the support of the fans. It’s also a great evening’s entertainment on a warm balmy evening. Check out the match reports and schedule (page 49) and maybe get a group together to cheer on the team. Division One is beckoning! In recent times I’ve been asking for your feedback and this month we’re published some reader’s comments (page 53). Thanks to those who took the time to provide such encouraging remarks, it’s nice to be appreciated.

Joining The First Prachuab Khirikhan To Myeik ‘Cultural Caravan’ The first Prachuab Khirikhan - Myeik Cultural Caravan of 2016 was organised by the Prachub-Myeik Trading and Investment Development Association, and consisted of 49 vehicles with 182 travellers from Prachuab Khirikhan and other Thai provinces in total. Hua Hin Today was invited on this ‘cultural adventure’ and joined the lead vehicle driven by Khun Wijanprida ‘Lek’ Isararee, the Managing Director of Mazda Hua Hin, driving a Mazda BT50 Pro Myeik is a city in Tanintharyi Region in Myanmar (Burma), located in the extreme south of the country on the coast of an island on the Andaman Sea. Situated on a peninsula jutting out into the Andaman Sea, Myeik has been a busy and strategically significant port for over 500 years. The journey started at 8 o’clock in the morning after a farewell ceremony presided over by Prachuab Khirikhan Governor Dr. Thawee Narissirikul, along with distinguished and honorary guests including the Chief Officer of Mu Dong District in Myanmar. The Singkhon Checkpoint is located at the narrowest part of Thailand where the distance from the Gulf of Thailand to the Checkpoint is only 18 kilometres. The Singkhon Checkpoint is not yet a border crossing, but a pass which is expected to be upgraded when a joint agreement is signed

by the Thai-Myanmar Joint Boundary Commission. The Checkpoint remains unavailable as a transit point for foreigners and is restricted to being an entry point for citizens of Thailand and Myanmar. It was then a further 180 kilometres from the Singkhon Checkpoint to Myeik. The first 40 kilometres was travelled on a long rough unsealed road, followed by 40 kilometres on an even dustier and rougher road. With driving reduced to only 30 kilometres per hour, the trip took about 6 hours on these roads and was a really adventurous experience. Mergui was the name given by the British to this southernmost part of Burma. The Mergui archipelago was off-limits to foreigners until 1997; although it is now open for tourism, access is limited as permits are necessary and it remains largely unexplored. “Beik” as the locals call their home, inhabitants around 300,000 people. It has been a significant port town for centuries. First were people from India to trade with Myeik. Portuguese traders followed later in the 16th century.

Despite having no beaches Myeik is not lacking charm. The Thein Daw Gyi Pagoda right in the middle of town offers a splendid panoramic view over the town and the islands. Walking along the streets can be like on a farm as many goats, chicken, even cows, dogs and cats roaming around, something like I remember from my home town of Chiang Mai around 30 years ago.

The town itself was for centuries under the rule of the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand). The Burmese King Alaungpaya reconquered Myeik in the late 18th century. It was then under British rule from 1826 to 1948.

Myeik has been cut off from the rest of Myanmar for very long time. Overland travel, which is now possible for tourists, was prohibited and only possible with a special permit. The charm of the city is also based on the unique architecture of the buildings, historical sites and Buddhist temples. The people have their own traditional dress and costume and their own unique way of life. There is a unity in the diversity of the people, including those of Islamic faith and ethnic Burmese. Some of the local people of Myeik can speak Thai, as they often come to Thailand. The region boasts many islands with undisturbed flora and fauna. Development has resulted in many new roads in Myeik, full of cars and motorcycles, and hotels and guesthouses are mushrooming. Since many people also live on islands not far from the city, water transport is also favored with an active fishing industry. Thanks to economic development and an ideal location close to Thailand, Myeik is becoming an attractive tourist attraction and a place for investment by Thais

HUA HIN TODAY, April 2016

and other foreigners. Thai people are establishing restaurants and Thai business people are investing in the fishing industry. Some Thais are also involved in tourism boats, taking visitors to the islands. The road from Thailand to Myeik is improving. From the Singkhon Checkpoint, there is public bus to Mu Dong Village and it is not difficult to travel from there to Myeik, especially for Burmese people. This is enabling the city to become an economically developed city in southern Myanmar. Our trip included visits to many of the historical places of Myeik. We took in the sites and paid our respects at Tanao Sri City Pillar, the Thai Buddhist Temple of Pin U, the Chedi Thong Buddhist Temple as well as the Teng Do Ji Buddhist Temple. One more thing that the travelers learnt during the trip was how the closure of the country by the Burmese government has resulted in local art and traditional culture being well preserved. People are still enjoying a traditional and modest way of living. With the country opened officially, it may soon become difficult to experience such traditional ways of life. We are grateful to the Prachub-Myeik Trading and Investment Development Association in Prachuab Khirikhan and Myeik, especially the Chairman Mr. Weera Sriwattanatrakul, and the Association’s Members who allowed us such a precious opportunity to participate in this fascinating and unique cultural trip.

9 Kaeng Krachan Park Fire Brought Under Control A big bush fire was brought under control last month after destroying about 1,000 Rai of a forest in the Kaeng Krachan National Park. The fire had been spotted on the Tanao Sri mountain range a few kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar border on 17th March. Rangers and forest firefighters tried to reach the site but strong winds forced them to withdraw. The firefighters, together with soldiers and volunteer hill people, renewed the effort the following morning.

Firefighters spent hours carrying water and equipment to make 30-kilometre-long firebreaks to contain the blaze and protect a water catchment area near the Pa La-u waterfall.

Thasanet Phetkhong, assistant chief of the Kaeng Krachan National Park who joined the group, reported later they had managed to contain the fire, he said the fire had eased thanks to high humidity.

Source: Bangkok Post

Firefighters saw traces of poachers who were believed to have set fire in the forest to facilitate their hunts. The practice is common despite warnings; it took four days to put out the previous fire.

Trash Hero Hua Hin Takes On Pranburi Forest Park Trash Hero Hua Hin with 39 volunteers, has removed 350 kilograms of trash from Pranburi Forest Park. On Sunday March 13th, Trash Hero Hua Hin, together with students from Mahidol University International College and other volunteers totaling 39 people helped to clean the beach at Pranburi Forest Park. The team removed 350 kilograms of trash in 2 hours. Trash Hero Hua Hin is one of the 11 chapters in Thailand of the non-profit organisation Trash Hero, which also has another 4 chapters in Indonesia. Trash Hero Thailand is also the winner of Thailand’s Green Excellent Awards 2015. It has been almost a year since Trash Hero Hua Hin was started. They have already removed 1,332 kilograms of trash with the help of 330 volunteers in 43 cleanups.

A special request from one Trash Hero: “To all the smokers on the beach; a request. I don’t mind your habit, done it myself for a long time, but please could you take your butts with you when you leave? Or collect them in a soda can or empty water bottle during the day? So much easier to dispense and the beaches will look so much better. Thank you in advance, cleaning up starts with you.” For more information and the weekly meeting point of Trash Hero Hua Hin and your opportunity to get involved, please see www.facebook.com/trashherohuahin

11 Christian Wurm, An Experienced & International General Manager at the Hyatt Regency Around a month ago the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and THE BARAI announced the appointment of a German national from Neustadt/Weinstrasse, Mr. Christian Wurm, as General Manager. Christian has an international perspective based on previous hospitality positions in regions including the Maldives, Canouan Island (Caribbean) and Dubai. In 2008, he began his career at Hyatt as Executive Assistant Manager at the Park Hyatt Sydney and was appointed General Manager of Park Hyatt Chennai in 2013. Christian has arrived here with his wife and two daughters only weeks ago and they are in the process of ‘finding their feet’. His daughters (aged ten and seven) are settling in to school life at the International School at Black Mountain and the family is yet to move to their own family accommodation. Christian believes that Hua Hin offers a blend of the best features from his previous experiences in a familyfriendly environment. His biggest surprise so far is that this haven has only recently been ‘discovered’ by the international tourism industry. “I am delighted to be back in the ‘Land of Smiles’ and working in the charming city of Hua Hin after visiting Thailand many times during the last few years. With the great increase of tourists around the world visiting every year, I am confident that Hua Hin has a promising future and will continually grow internationally in wider markets”. Christian’s experience in hospitality began with a culinary ‘apprenticeship’. From working as a chef he entered Hotel Management School and economics in Berlin followed by strategic management studies at Cornell University in New York. One of the important strategies of the Hyatt Regency management group followed by Christian is to always enquire about guests’ preferences and to modify services to match. Perhaps asking simple questions about why a particular refreshment drink is being presented when something else may be favoured. That’s one of the benefits of a new management perspective; a fresh pair of eyes and a fresh enquiring mind based on experience aiming to provide the best guest hospitality experiences. With over 20 years in the business, Christian aims to use his expertise to further strengthen the overall performance of Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and THE BARAI. With a young family, Christian’s leisure time has been somewhat restricted in recent years, although we have seen photographic evidence of beach runs and the golf courses are beckoning. Maybe when the seventh annual Hyatt Open at Banyan Golf Course comes around in mid July he will be in the field.

Our thanks to Khun Tubtim Premyodhin, the Hyatt Regency’s Marketing Communications Manager, and to Christian for their valuable time spent away from the settling-in process. Our best wishes go to Christian

and his family for many enjoyable times to come in Hua Hin. Under his guidance the Hyatt seems destined to continue in its award winning ways as one of Hua Hin’s premier hospitality destinations.

With the extra holidays, next year’s Coronation Day break is extended to four days and Asanha Bucha Day break to five days. Worldwide Panda Parade Now In Bangkok

Thailand Top Spot for Chinese Tourists Last Year Thailand was the top destination for Chinese tourists last year, according to new research data

Pandering to us with their cuteness for a good cause, 1,600 paper mache pandas, the famed work of French sculptor Paulo Grangeon, are now in Bangkok.

A total of 7.9 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand in 2015, an increase of 70 per cent on 2014, Bloomberg reported. This was despite the August bombing of a Bangkok shrine popular with Chinese tourists, an outbreak of the Mers virus, and Thai’s general condemnation of Chinese tourists for bad behavior, including a temporary ban on Chinese visitors to Chiang Rai’s White Temple.

Graph showing increase in Chinese tourists to Thailand. Picture: Bloomberg Thailand overtook South Korea as the top country destination for mainland visitors, which had a 2 percent decrease in Chinese tourists. The Land of Smiles was closely followed by Japan, where visitors from China more than doubled to 5 million last year.

This massive herd has toured Europe and is now making its way throughout Asia. From Mar 19th the pandas appeared at 10 major landmarks around the city (plus Ayutthaya), for three hours at each location. A more relaxed opportunity to view the pandas is now at the Central Embassy (Ploenchit Road, Pathumwan) until April 10th. The sight of all those cute little pandas occupying a large public square makes for an impressive and jovial scene, but when you realise that 1,600 represents

www.facebook.com/huahintodaynews HUA HIN TODAY, April 2016

the number of pandas left on the planet, you start to understand the big picture of an endangered population. The Bangkok visit is part of their world tour, which was launched in 2008 by WWF France and the artist to increase public awareness of panda conservation, and remind people of wildlife and environmental sustainability. Chiang Mai resident pandas, Chuang Chuang and Linhui successfully artificially bred and produced an offspring named Lin Ping in May 2009. This begs the question; should there really be 1,601 pandas on parade?

13 Chakri Memorial Day in Thailand

April 6th is a public holiday in Thailand known as Chakri Memorial Day or simply Chakri Day. It commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty that has been ruling the Kingdom of Thailand since 1782. The Chakri Dynasty is the current ruling royal house of Thailand. The House of Chakri was founded by Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke also known as King Rama I. He was a prominent military leader. In 1782, he defeated a rebellion which had ousted his longtime friend King Taksin. On April 6, 1782, he took control of Siam and crowned himself as the monarch, establishing the Chakri Dynasty. , King Rama I was responsible for re-locating the capital of Siam from Thonburi to Krung Thep, the site of modern-day Bangkok. King Rama I also built the magnificent Royal Palace and began a dynasty of monarchs who have had a very significant influence on carving and shaping modern Thai culture, heritage and society. King Rama I’s policies laid the foundation for modern Thailand. He is one of the most significant figures in the Thai history, therefore the anniversary of his ascension was declared a public holiday. The official name of the holiday is King Buddha Yodfa Chulaoke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day. The present and much revered ruling monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the ninth king. People take flowers and incense to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to pay respect to him and the eight former kings of the dynasty. The Pantheon, a building on the temple grounds adjoining the Grand Palace, housing statues of each king, is open to the public only on this day of the year. On this day, the national flag is displayed on buildings. Traditional ceremonies are held on the occasion, attended by government officials and members of the community. People lay flowers at garlands at numerous statues of kings of the Chakri Dynasty throughout the country.

Songkran 2015 – The World’s Biggest Ice-bucket Challenge?

In the afternoon of the same day there is bathing ceremony of the Buddha images and also of the abbot of the Wat. The bathing of images is done as ritualistic ceremony, but it is no other than a New Year’s purification. Younger people will also on this day or the succeeding days go to pay their respect to and ask blessings from their elders and respected persons. They will pour scented water into the palms of the old people and present them with a towel and other bathing requisites. In the old days it was an actual bathing where the young people helped the old people to take a bath and to change their old clothing and put on the new clothes which the young people presented them as an act of respect to the aged on the occasion of the New Year.

Over the last couple of years the ‘ice-bucket challenge’ has been a fashionable and fun way of being soaked in freezing iced water for the sake of charity. However the rest of the world may not be aware that ritual submission to this form of humiliation on a grand scale and over three consecutive days each year has long been apart of Thai culture. It’s definitely the world’s biggest ice-bucket challenge! If we would take a look at the history, Songkran actually originated from Burma. In fact, there are also other countries practicing this festivity including Vietnam and Laos. The word Songkran was derived from “Sankranti”, which means “to move or to change”. Celebrated on 13thApril – 15thApril, Songkran 2015 is the longest holiday in Thailand. Songkran is not only about fun and the party atmosphere that will be found on the streets of Thailand no matter where you are.

The period has associated religious activities and important family activities. On the eve of Songkran Day, i.e. on the 12th April, the people clean their house and burn all the refuse. This is a spring Cleaning Day done as a duty in the belief that anything bad belonging to the old year will be unlucky to the owner if left and carried on to the coming New Year.

Another duty to be done during the Songkran Festival is a religious service called Bangsakun performed in sacred memory to the dead. On Songkran Day a religious service in sacred memory to the dead may be officiated by a monk or monks at the place where the ashes and the bones have been deposited, or as in some localities the

people bring their dead bones to a village Wat in company with others where a joint memorial service is performed. In some parts of the country the guardian spirits of the village and town receive also their annual offerings on Songkran Days.

Chiang Mai – Perhaps Thailand’s biggest Sngkran happening! If you happen to be in Chiam Mai for Songkran you may expect to come across a procession and bathing of Phra Buddha Sihing, local Lanna women riding a Kang Chong (a Northern vehicle) in the street procession, bathing and paying respect to elders by pouring scented water (nam op), building sand pagodas, local art and cultural shows, Lanna’s man and lady beauty contests, water splashing around the moat of Chiang Mai and delicious international foods along Urban Culture Street. So welcome to the 2015 Thai New Year; we hope it’s a good one for you!

Early on the first day of Songkran, the 13th April, the people both young and old in their new clothing go to the Wat or monastery belonging to their village or district to offer food to the monks there. A long table is erected in the compound of the Wat where monk’s alms bowls stand in a row on either side of the table. Into the alms bowls the gathering people put boiled rice and into the covers of the alms bowls, food, fruits and sweetmeats.

14 Staying Cool In April

April is the hottest month in Thailand. During extremely hot weather, the body can become dehydrated which can cause a range of health problems from relatively minor issues such as heat rash or heat exhaustion, to serious conditions, such as heat stroke. To prevent these heats - related illnesses try our tips to stay cool and hydrated on hot days.

Air Circulation

Use fans to promote air circulation throughout your home. Opening doors in the house and using fans to push hot air outdoors can function as an “exhaust” system and draw cooler evening air into the house. In the cooler evenings, open all windows for the same reasons. When the sun rises, close all doors and windows, making sure to close curtains and blinds as well, to keep the indoors cool for as long as possible. When the outside air cools to a lower temperature than inside (usually in the evenings or at night), open up the windows and turn on the fans again.

Eliminate extra sources of heat. Incandescent light bulbs can generate unnecessary heat, as can computers or appliances left running. Eat fresh foods that do not require you to use the oven or stove to prepare.

Eating & Drinking

Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine, as both of these substances can act as diuretics and promote dehydration. Don’t eat large, protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body.

Water Cooling

Take advantage of the cooling power of water. Fill buckets or basins and soak your feet. Wet towels and bandannas can have a cooling effect when worn on the shoulders or head. Take cool showers or baths, and consider using a spray bottle filled with cold water for refreshing spritzes throughout the day.

Stay Hydrated

Remember to maintain an adequate level of hydration, which means you’ll need to consume more water than you usually do when it’s hot. If you’re sweating profusely, you will also need to replace electrolytes by eating a small amount of food with your water or by drinking specially-formulated electrolyte replacement drinks. Thirst is the first sign of dehydration; you should drink sufficient amounts of fluids before you feel thirsty in order to prevent dehydration.

Finally ……………

Try to visit public buildings with air conditioning during the hottest hours of the day if the heat becomes unbearable. Shopping malls and movie theatres can all be good places to cool down.

For a homemade “air conditioning” system, sit in the path of a box fan that is aimed at an open cooler, or pan filled with ice.

Be able to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and true heat emergencies (heat cramps, heat rash, heat exhaustion, heat stroke). Don’t delay seeking medical help when these symptoms appear, they can be life-threatening. Try to cool the victim until help arrives.

Avoiding Heat Sources

Head downstairs because hot air rises, the upper stories of a home will be warmer than the ground floor. A basement may be a cool refuge from the midday heat.

Your Pets

Remember that pets also suffer when the temperature rises. Cooling animals (dogs, rabbits, cats) by giving them a “cool” bath or shower will help keep their body temperature down. A cool towel on a tile floor to lay on, a cool towel or washcloth laying over the skin next to a fan will also help cool the animal. Make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink as well.

Doctors Say These Are The Symptoms You Should Absolutely NEVER Ignore

No one knows our bodies better than ourselves — so when something’s wrong, it doesn’t take long to notice. Paying attention to the way we feel and to new sensations or pains can be one of the most important tools in detecting and preventing many fatal conditions, like in detecting a heart attack. Dr. Len Lichtenfeld of the American Cancer Society writes, “You know your body best. When you see or feel something different or just feel ‘off’, pay attention. Don’t dismiss it.” While there are some ailments that we can solve ourselves — like minor aches and pains — certain symptoms tell us that we should seek medical attention right away. Neurosurgeon Dr. Keith L. Black writes, “The things that we doctors are most concerned about are new symptoms that develop quickly, rather than things that develop over a long period of time.” While this list should never take the place of medical advice, these are quick and easy indicators to know if something major might be wrong.

Chest pain

Chest Pain very serious and requires immediate medical attention. Pain or lingering tightness in the chest can be an indicator of a heart attack — but it could also be a sign of heart disease or even a blood clot. Dr. Shilpi Agarwal writes, “Any chest pain, especially accompanied by sweating, pressure, shortness of breath, or nausea, should be evaluated by a medical professional right away.”

As with any symptom, chest pain does not automatically mean that something terrible is wrong. But in this case it is always better to be safe than sorry!A sudden onset of extreme pain in your head, particularly if it feels worse than any headaches you’ve had before, is a strong indicator that you should see a doctor right away. These terrible headaches could be a sign of an aneurysm or even a burst blood vessel. There are also other possibilities such as meningitis or shingles. Sudden Severe Headache The Cleveland Clinic writes, “A sudden, severe headache could be a sign of a more serious, life-threatening condition. Up to six percent of the population could be living with an unruptured brain aneurysm.” As with the onset of any sudden symptom, seeking medical attention is always the smart move with a terrible, unexpected headache! Sudden confusion or an inability to concentrate are actually extremely serious indicators that something is very wrong. Medical attention is definitely needed for confusion or a large change in personality. The strange behavior could be an indicator of a brain tumor, bleeding in the brain, or even a stroke. At the very least, it could be a sign of low blood sugar, dehydration, or an infection. Dr. David Bronson writes, “The mortality rate for severe confusion is pretty high. You have to figure out what’s going on.”

Unexplained weight loss Unexplained weight loss of five percent of your body or more over a relatively short period of time is a serious indicator that you should see a doctor. One of the biggest symptoms of several types of cancer is this type of weight loss, and it is important to catch it as quickly as possible. Other possibilities include diabetes, depression, and problems with your endocrine system. Dr. Julian Schink writes, “Colon cancer is commonly associated with unexplained weight loss.” While shedding a few pounds is not cause for concern, if you find yourself unsure of why you are losing weight, it is best to get things checked out! Flashes of Light Seeing flashes of light, unexplained bright spots, or other oddities in your vision is certainly a reason to see your doctor. These flashes or the presence of a large amount of floaters in your vision could be a sign of a detached retina, which can quickly lead to permanent loss of vision. The National Cancer Institute writes that although these symptoms do not cause pain and may seem harmless, getting fast treatment can save your vision. Persistent Fever A persistent fever or one that is abnormally high certainly requires medical attention. As a fever indicates that your body is battling some kind of infection, a more

serious fever indicates a more serious infection. Possibilities include meningitis, a urinary tract infection, or even some forms of cancer like lymphoma or leukemia. Dr. David Bronson writes, “Fever of 103 degrees and higher warrants a trip to the doctor — period.” And while the likelihood of cancer being the problem is low on the list, most of the potential causes require antibiotics, making a doctor’s visit extremely necessary! Short Of Breath There are many situations, such as extreme physical activity, that can cause you to be short of breath. But if you can’t catch your breath for an extended period of time, or if it is accompanied by chest pain, a fever, circulation issues, wheezing, or gasping, you should see a doctor right away. This inability to catch your breath could be a sign of a blood clot or pulmonary disease, both of which are extremely serious. Dr. Shilpi Agarwal writes, “Without urgent evaluation, breathing can quickly become labored, and it can be catastrophic if not evaluated and treated quickly.” Swollen Legs Swollen legs mean that fluid is accumulating that shouldn’t be there, and it may be a sign of heart failure, thyroid problems, or even vein problems. And if it is accompanied by pain in the back of your lower leg, it could be an indication of a blood clot. In any case, you should seek medical attention.

Officer of NCADD, “and parents can make a difference. The longer children delay drinking and drug use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it. That’s why it is so important to help your child make smart decisions about alcohol and drugs.” Each April since 1987, the US National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. With this year’s theme, “Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference in Teen Alcohol Use,”aims to educate people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism, particularly among the youth, and the important role that parents can play in giving kids a better understanding of the impact that alcohol can have on their lives. Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous—both to themselves and to society, and is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviours, even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction. Adolescence is a time of heightened risk-taking and as alcohol and drugs enter the picture, parents are faced with a unique set of challenges. They can simply sit back and hope their kids will “get through it,” or they can take an active role in learning about alcohol and drugs and helping their kids do the same. It can be daunting to talk with children about drinking and drug use, but it is well worth the effort parents put into it. In fact, research has shown that kids who have conversations with their parents and learn a lot about the dangers of alcohol and drug use are 50% less likely to use these substances than those who don’t have such conversations. “Alcohol and drug use is a very risky business for young people,” says Andrew Pucher, President and Chief Executive

Sansara Seniors’ Village Planned For Black Mountain BuilderSmart PCL is currently targeting the property market through the development of a Seniors’ Lifestyle Community adjacent to the new 9 holes at the award winning Black Mountain Golf Course. This well located project will be exclusively for residents aged over 50 years. Chief Executive Officer for BuilderSmart Public Company Limited, Mr. Suresh Subramaniam, said that the company was pioneering the fast growing retirement property market by introducing a Sansara, a 500-million THB lifestyle residential community that includes ready access to a wide range of services for residents with 13 resort-style villas and 30 condominium units. “Sansara is a retirement-styled village, which is considered a high-growth industry. With its resort atmosphere and five-star hospitality services, we expect it will receive a good response from the market,” he said. Sansara’s villas are scheduled to start construction by the middle of this year and completed later in the year, while the three condo buildings are scheduled for completion late next year. Sanchai Nueangsit, BuilderSmart’s managing director, said the company is setting up a new wholly owned subsidiary to handle property development with registered capital of at least 200 million baht. The Lifestyle Community will be managed by Sansara Lifestyle Management, a joint venture between Buildersmart and Independent Management Group (IMG), an Australian Seniors specialist management company.

Executives from IMG were at Black Mountain during last month’s True Thailand Classic together with staff at an information booth. Hua Hin Today was able to speak with Ms Chloe Bedlow, the Operations and Training Manager and the Managing Director Ms Susan Malone who were very enthusiastic about this new project, although the full details are yet to be finalised. IMG’s Managing Director, Mrs. Susan Malone said, “IMG is experienced in managing communities for the retired for a long time in Australia. During the last five years, the company has also been working in China and South East Asia, so Sansara will be well positioned and able to provide residents with the security, community and services they seek to live with comfort and peace of mind.” The Beaumont Partnership is Thailand’s leading architect firm and has been appointed to create luxury floor plans for villas and condos along with community facilities which will facilitate an active and healthy lifestyle.

because European people, whether they are golfers or not, like to have peaceful living after retirement in Hua Hin. The company is confident that the customers are going to like it.

The Beaumont Partnership’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Timothy Beaumont, said that Sansara Black Mountain would showcase exuberant design and respond to the need of future residents because of its meticulous details and excellent architecture. He stressed that the development was not only for seniors, but for anyone over 50 years of age.

With the concept, “Live the life you love”, Sansara Black Mountain encourages seniors to enjoy their life and will provide options for activities, food and beverage services, home services, care, fitness, recreation and emergency services. It will be a ‘first’ for Hua Hin with further information and floor plans to be released soon and reservations are expected to be available from June, 2016.

Mr. Harald Elison, Managing Director of the Black Mountain Golf Club, said that he was excited by the Sansara project being launched at Black Mountain

There are groups of eight story apartment buildings behind the imposing entry and sports complex with a ‘6 Star’ hotel still under construction. It’s a ‘white forest’ of condominiums buildings stretching between the main road and ocean frontage. We joined MBA and business studies students from Stamford International University who were given the opportunity to learn on site from Chanok Chaisin, Marketing Director Baan Rajprasong, the development company. His presentation; ‘Hua Hin Millionaire Talk’, delivered investment words of wisdom from an industry leader as invaluable exposure for the students to the real business world away from more theoretical campus lessons. The group then visited display units before riding in golf buggies to take a look at the expansive project area (around 130 Rai) to understand more about ‘The Energy’ first hand. First it must be stressed that this development is all about offering holiday homes for people from Bangkok with around 80% of the new owners in that category. The units vary in size and do not attempt to include all the necessities of a permanent home environment. Something similar to a ‘condotel’; available for a weekend away from the ‘big mango’ anytime. Mr. Monthien Innoi, CEO of Baan Rajprasong Co. Ltd., has said, “After The Energy Hua Hin, a holiday home that renews your energy was launched, many people came to take a look and book units. Most customers bought their condominiums as holiday homes.” The sales staff commented that about 90% of the units have sold. The commencing price started at 1.8 million THB, with remaining limited sales now at 2.1 million, going up to 17 million THB for those with ocean frontages and on a larger scale. We drove our golf buggies along wide avenues between the now completed stage one (6,000 units) towards the ocean and stage two (500 units). Between the condo blocks there are green spaces and meandering swimming pools so that the feeling is not too enclosed or confining. The 130 Rai of land has 95 Rai (73%) retained as communal common areas. Unit owners are starting to make use of the facilities although with building work still ongoing, it may be some time before there are more visiting holiday makers.

The sales literature describes an unusual concept for the payment of common fees. Owners only pay for the first year and no more thereafter. This includes the inclusion of lifetime membership of the Sports Complex.

The Energy is not about to become the destination of a many new residents to our region though it could be anticipated that the economic opportunities will become significant to both local businesses and to the region in general.

Mr. Monthien Innoi, CEO of Baan Rajprasong Co., Ltd. says, “Owners will only pay fees for the first year and no more thereafter. The Communal Fees and a contribution to a trust fund will be collected from condominium owners only once at the transfer of ownership. The company will also make a significant contribution and the total amount from these three components will be used to establish a Condominium Juristic Person’s Fund, which will be managed by BBL Asset Management Co., Ltd., a professional company fund management. They will invest the fund in a proper manner and will cover the annual common maintenance expenses with the profits.”

Infrastructure needs, including traffic management for Cha-Am and Hua Hin is perhaps a looming issue; often discussed by the local population. Holiday makers to Hua Hin are always welcome; assuming that these needs can be met. A site visit can be made without appointment each day from 9 AM from the Sales Office. 215 10 Tips To Create An Asian-Inspired Interior Asian style interiors instantly evoke an image of serenity and tranquil calm. With most of us engrossed in a fast paced urban lifestyle, it helps immensely when we can come back home to a peaceful abode that allows us to escape this never ending rush. Asian themed interiors accomplish this goal in inimitable style by ushering in harmony and balance.

the Far East! For those looking to add a timeless decor addition that bridges the gap between the East and the West with a more modern silhouette, we suggest dipping into the stunning Akari Light Sculpture Collection from Isamu Noguchi.

4. A Cool Water Feature

7. Organic and Sustainable Design

But creating an Asian inspired room is much more than just adding a few distinct decorations. It takes care, precision and a clear thought process that allows you to do away with the unwanted additions. At its core, Asian design is a fusion of several different styles that range from the Japanese and the Chinese to exotic Indian themes. Yet, for most, it is often dominated by oriental influences that have originated in the Far East several centuries ago. Here is how you can incorporate some of these mesmerizing elements into your own home design while keeping the fresh, contemporary vibe intact. 1. The Perfect Backdrop

Speaking of creating an atmosphere of equilibrium, water is another wonderful way of ushering in Asian style with ease and simplicity. The sound of flowing water is considered both harmonious and positive according to Feng Shui, and a small water feature in the entrance room, living area, or even in the backyard is a welcome addition. Reflecting pools make for amazing additions and have a calming influence that is undeniable. For those looking to add a water feature that is lively and effervescent, a beautiful koi pond is the way to go. Water features not only bring an element of fluidity, they can also double as stunning sculptural installations that become the focal point of the room. 5. A Fusion of Styles

Asian designs and themes are largely inspired by the colors of nature, and often decorations mimic scenic landscapes and reinterpret natural colors to suit the interior. Hence, it is best to keep the backdrop as neutral as possible. That does not mean white is your only option. Gentle cream, understated light blues and even an elegant grey work just fine. Remember that you are going for a soothing backdrop that offers a relaxed and laidback ambiance.

We did talk earlier about how popular Asian themes are in reality a fusion of several different styles. It is important to know each style and its distinct elements before you make a choice regarding which one suits your home the best. The Japanese design style is innately simple, minimalist, and one that is closest to nature and its many hues. If you are a looking to add the essence of Zen to your residence, this is the theme for you. Traditional Chinese decor is far more opulent, expansive and grand with regal reds, lavish gold, captivating jade and plush purple tones.

This is one aspect of Asian design that is simply irresistible and should appeal to the ecoconscious homeowners out there. Smooth polished stones such as river rocks, sustainable bamboo blinds that replace the traditional drapes, intricately woven tatami mats, and potted plants and shrubs that bring in nature’s goodness tend to come together to paint that picture perfect look. It’s the little details that tend to make a big difference to the ambiance of the room. Make sure you keep the accessories and furnishings as sustainable and organic as possible to induce a truly Asian vibe. 24/3/2559 10 Tips To Create An AsianInspired Interior 8. Fragrance of Nature Think beyond the decor itself to fashion a more authentic Asian themed interior. Sandalwood incense, scented candles

2. A Hint of Vivacious Colour One popular misconception is that Asian styles are bereft of any vivid and rich hues, while in reality the truth is exactly the opposite! An Asian themed interior is truly complete only with vibrant accent hues that stand out when placed in a calm, neutral setting. The lovely pinks of cherry blossoms, ravishing reds and luxurious purples are all an integral part of the Oriental style. If you are opting for a Chinese inspired decorating style, these colors become an absolute must. For those who love a hint of mystic charm, carefully placed subtle black hues are the ideal choice. Another visually spellbinding option is to combine the soft neutral backdrop with exquisite golden tones to create a majestic living room. With gold being touted as one of the hottest colors this winter, it makes a trendy, fashionable statement as well. 3. Visual and Textural Balance

The typical Indian style is a colorful, unabashed celebration of life showcasing traditional Indian motifs and cultural icons. In case you are trying to create a fusion of Asian styles, it is best to stick to Japanese interior influences in the public spaces and opt for indulgent Chinese designs and colors in the bedroom. Add a few art pieces and rich textiles from an Indian backdrop and you have a truly Asian style! 6. Sculptural Lighting and Paper Lanterns Lighting can make or break the look of your interior, regardless of the theme you have going. But in the case of Asian style, it adds to the entire visual and elegantly accentuates the theme. Stylish hanging paper lanterns, sculptural lighting installations and a few carefully placed candles go a long way in creating a home inspired by

While trying to plan for Asian style interiors, the word ‘balance’ is something that you will come across time and time again. And we simply cannot overstate the importance of this singular aspect of oriental design. Balance is often the key defining aspect of an Asian theme. You need the right harmony of not just the colors but also different textures and elements that surround you. If your home is just one big block of concrete, think about adding glass partitions, natural stone decorations, wooden floors, bamboo blinds and a few organic textures in a poised fashion.

and beautiful wind chimes elevate the Oriental feel to a whole new level. Add to this a few potted plants and shrubs that bring in nature’s goodness and you will instantly notice the transformation of the modern home into a comforting and serene hub. Both sound and aroma play a critical part in shaping our perception of various settings and in making the room a far more pleasant space. They also do not demand any repainting of the walls or renovation of your home and redefine the aesthetics in a costeffective manner. 9. Sleek Minimalism Clean and welldefined straight lines, minimalist decorations and sleek symmetry are all a natural part of Asian design influenced by a Japanese style. These elements allow you to effortlessly incorporate the theme into a contemporary setting with a few simple furniture and color changes. Borrowing from Feng Shui values that have been tried and tested for centuries now, clutter is an absolute no no, and Asian themes encourage you to surround yourself with only the things that you absolutely love! 10. Inimitable Oriental Decor Not too sure if your residence is cut out for an Asian theme? If you have a home that is already clad in cool neutral tones, then all you will need is a subtle decor change to test the waters out before committing to the theme. Small statues laughing Buddha, decorative fans, Asian scroll paintings, a few jade statues, some oriental parasols, a shoji room divider or two, and throw pillow covers with Asian motifs should get the job done without forcing you to make permanent changes. Whether dramatic or understated, calming or classy, Asian themes offer an amazing way to give your home an impeccable and exclusive appeal. Keep an eye out for some oriental decor pieces next time you visit the thrift shop or the flea market so that you can redecorate on a budget. Get it right and you are guaranteed a tranquil getaway right at home!

April 2016

The 15th Hua Hin & Cha-Am Golf Festival 2016 Confirmed Khun Suwit Ruengroongrueng, as the President of the Petchaburi – Prachuap Khirikhan Golf Association, has confirmed with Hua Hin Today arrangements for the 15th Annual Hua Hin Cha-Am Golf festival 2016 during the months of August and September. Major golf courses in Hua Hin will offer very special green fees during these 2 months.

This year The Eagle Milford is an unlikely participant, however there may also be one more surprise addition.

Green Fees of 1,000 THB and Caddie Fees of 300 THB will apply to most of the golf courses from 1st August until 30th September. However the full pricing details, including golf carts are yet to be confirmed.

The Hua Hin Cha-Am Golf Festival is a great opportunity to become familiar with some of the best golf courses in Thailand and for visiting golfers to enjoy some real bargains. The so-called ‘low season’ maybe during the wet season but our region’s climate poses few restrictions to those ‘in the know’.

Additionally, there will be a weekly (Sunday) tournament at one of golf courses culminating in a winners’ tournament to complete the Festival. During 2015 the golf courses involved were Black Mountain, Banyan, Royal Springfield, Imperial Lakeview, Royal Hua Hin, Palm Hills, Majestic Creek, Kraeng Krachan, The Eagle Milford and Suanson/Sea Pines.

Before too long more information will become available at www. ppgathailand. com. Khun Suwit commented that final arrangements will follow meetings of the PPGA Members soon to convened.

August and September may be during the European summer, so that enticing travellers who prefer to escape long winter months poses some difficulties, However southern hemisphere golfers are very different. The marketing opportunities to these countries are obvious, particularly ‘golf mad’ Australia and New Zealand. These countries are obvious targets to put ‘low season’ golf on the map.

Chiang Mai To Host The AGTC in 2016 as Asia’s Largest Golf Tourism Event Returns to Thailand Northern Thailand will be the focus of the Asia Pacific golf industry when the city of Chiang Mai stages the 5th annual IAGTO Asia Golf Tourism Convention from 24-27 April 2016. It will be the second time in three years that Thailand will have hosted the convention, which is organised by global golf tourism organisation IAGTO – the previous occasion being when the second edition of the event was staged in Pattaya in 2013. Last year’s AGTC gathering saw 510 delegates, including almost 180 tour operator buyers from 35 countries around the world, spend two days meeting with golf courses, golf resorts, hotels and other tourism suppliers from golf destinations throughout the Asia Pacific region. Unveiling the 2016 location, IAGTO Chief Executive Peter Walton said: “Thailand is

not one single golf destination but a collection of uniquely different golf experiences throughout the length and breadth of the country. In selecting Chiang Mai as the host destination for AGTC 2016 we will be able to showcase Northern Thailand to well over half of all golf tour operators selling golf holidays to and within the Asia Pacific region.” Tanes Petsuwan, Executive Director for Europe, Africa and the Middle East for the Tourism Authority of Thailand commented that: “We are very proud that we are getting AGTC back to Thailand. We like to maintain the positioning of Thailand in golf tourism. Two cities in Thailand have received the best golf destination awards in Asia from IAGTO in the last three years. That is a significant indicator to ensure to the golfers that when they think about golfing in Asia, Thailand is the ideal place for playing golf. The Asian Tour enjoyed yet another exciting season in 2015 highlighted by defining moments that showcased the strength of the Tour and talented players. Undoubtedly, the year belonged to India’s Anirban Lahiri, who not only won the Asian Tour Order of Merit thanks to two victories, but also broke into the world’s top-50, posted a top-five finish in the PGA Championship, featured in his maiden Presidents Cup and earned his PGA Tour card, all within a span of 12 glorious months. Australian duo Scott Hend and Andrew Dodt, who were also victorious in 2015, finished second and third respectively on the Order of Merit. The Asian Tour also

heralded young and exciting winners in Thai duo Danthai Boonma and Natipong Srithong, as well as other first-time winners in India’s Chiragh Kumar and young Filipino Miguel Tabuena. 259 True Thailand Classic: Australian Scott Hend is the 2016 Champion

Following the win by Australian Andrew Dodt in last year’s inaungural event, fellow countryman Scott Hend held off a fast-finishing Piya Swangarunporn of Thailand to win the 2016 True Thailand Classic presented by Chang by one shot on Sunday 13th March. The 42-year-old Hend birdied the 14th & 17th holes for a closing four-under par 68 and an 18-under par 270 winning aggregate at Black Mountain Golf Club after Piya set a new course record of 63 in his final round. Belgium’s Thomas Pieters settled for third place following a 68, three strokes behind the new champion while USA’s Peter Uihlein was a further stroke back in fourth. Ten different nationalities featured in the first ten names on the leader board, with eleven in the first thirteen! “I stuck to my game plan and it came together. Hole 17 was obviously a crucial shot, being tied for the lead and on that tee, you hit a good tee shot you have a chance to get one in front. And on 18, it’s about not messing up the hole.”

Thongchai Jaidee, Johan Edfors, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Gunn Charoenkul and 2015 champion Andrew Dodt alongside Harald Elisson, General Manager of Black Mountain Golf Club and Vit Suthithavil, Managing Director of Panther Entertainment, pay respect to the royal statues of Thai Kings at Rajabhakti Park.

Even the 2016 Champion Scott Hend commented after day three: “It was a good grind; out of ten, I felt like a two, I felt really tired, no energy”. The day after his win Scott’s energy level was likely to be even lower, but out of 10? .................... at least an 11! Editor’s Note: Overheard from the caddy of a Thailand player who finished off the pace after the first two rounds. “Well my player is going on to the final rounds anyway.” What he didn’t get was that making the cut was for the best scoring 63 players plus ties; not plus Thais! Best final scores of the True Thailand Classic presented by Chang 2016 played at the par 72, 7,492 Yards Black Mountain course: 270 - Scott HEND (AUS) 68-64-70-68. 271 - Piya SWANGARUNPORN (THA) 68-68-72-63. 273 - Thomas PIETERS (BEL) 73-66-66-68. 274 - Peter UIHLEIN (USA) 64-71-69-70. 275 - Pelle EDBERG (SWE) 65-67-73-70. Hit Down and Through with Your Iron Shots

Golf Tip 25 Because of the dry conditions we are witnessing in Hua Hin at the moment I see a lot of my students trying to lift the ball off the grass instead of hitting down and through. This results in a lot of thin or topped shots. Try this simple exercise and you will be striking the ball better after only a few try’s. If you don’t take a divot on your approach shots, you’re probably pulling up or falling onto your back foot during the downswing. Here’s my favorite drill for learning to take good divots. Get into your normal setup, then lift the clubhead a few inches off the ground. (Pic 1). With the clubhead hovering, make your regular swing back and through. You’ll instinctively know you have to go down and through the shot, or you’ll miss the ball completely. That’s a pretty strong incentive, and it’ll have you taking ball-then-turf divots in no time. The wine tasting series at both resorts continues as more and more connoisseurs are discovering what the resorts have to offer their wine buds each month. Our evening was hosted by Leonard Faust, Director of Culinary & Service and Patrick Dowling, Penfolds Winemaking Ambassador for Asia. This time, four different tastes of Penfolds highlighting its popular Koonunga and Bin series were the heroes of the night, matching perfectly with scrumptious dishes like foie gras, Alaska scallop, roasted honey, clove studded ham carving and delicious canapĂŠs created to complement the wines and the night.

Hua Hin Hills Vineyard; The Harvest Festival 2016 About 45 km west of Hua Hin, you’ll find the picturesque Hua Hin Hills Vineyard. The vineyard, with the elevated Sala Bar and Bistro overlooking the vines below, is set amidst rolling hills and jungle, and close to the Myanmar border. This is in the same direction as Huay Monkol temple and on route to Pala U waterfall. To celebrate the annual harvest season, Hua Hin Hills Vineyard invited Hua Hin Today to experience the beauty of its mountainous property. This is the first and only vineyard in Prachuap Khiri Khan and also home of Monsoon Valley wines. Hua Hin Hills Vineyard was filled with lush green vines and grapes ready for harvest during the ‘Hua Hin Hills Vineyard Harvest Festival 2016’; a special festival during the month of March. The festival provided the experience of enjoying feature activities such as picking the freshly ripened grapes from the vines and making fresh grape fresh juice (‘from grape to glass’) and sampling fermenting white juice so called Federweisser in German; something like fresh beer. Live bands performed cool jazz in the vineyard’s romantic atmosphere every weekend. Now fully refurbished, The Sala Wine Bar and Bistro, in the heart of Hua Hin Hills Vineyard, also prepared a special Harvest Festival Menu. For the event Siam Winery announced two new wines on offer.

The highlight of the festival was the ‘Harvest Full Moon Dinner’Harvest Sunset Dinner , a special 4 course dinner held on the night of the full moon, March 8th. All dishes were paired with premium Monsoon Valley wines. The Harvest Festival is over for another year but there are many more reasons to visit this vineyard, take a guided tour and sample fine food and fine wine.

34 6 Our Selection of Must-Try Thai Desserts ขนมไทย

Eating Thai desserts (Kanom Thai, ) is one of the things you can’t miss in Thailand. They are everywhere, super cheap and very delicious. Many of Thai desserts have coconut milk as one of the main ingredients; this is why they taste and smell so good. Kanom bueang My most favorite! Every time I see it, I buy it. It normally has two flavors; sweet and savory. Some stalls / restaurants may offer something more sophisticated but these two are the most common and are simply the best.

most famous and most liked Thai desserts (by both locals and foreigners). However, not many food stalls / restaurants sell this dessert because of its price and shelf life. So If you find one selling it, don’t let it go as there could be no second chance for you

Kanom Krok

Kanom thuai

Mortar is used to make this dessert so Thai people call it Kanom Krok which means Mortar dessert.

Kao neaw ma muang

Mango and sticky rice… sounds like a weird combination. but this is one of the

FOOD & Entertainment, April 2016

Another banana dessert menu which is very easy to find on street. It’s normally sold together with deep-fried potato. You can choose to buy one of them or both (In my opinion, deep-fried banana is more delicious). Deep-fried foods are never good for your health (as no one, except the sellers, knows how long the oil has been used to fried bananas). So It’s best to buy it just a bit and share with your friends.

Tako

This menu tastes best when it’s hot. However, it’s not recommended to put it into your mouth right after you buy it as the creamy coconut could burn your tongue. Some stalls / restaurants will put corn or parsley into the dessert to enhance its taste. I personally don’t like it as, for me, Kanom Krok doesn’t need anything else. Its crispy skin and creamy coconut are the perfect match.

Kluay tord

Thai coconut milk custard or Kanom thuai is worth a try. If you ask me, I feel like this is a room-temperature version of Kanom Krok.

From its appearance, Tako looks like Kanom thuai. In fact, it’s quite different. Firstly, for coconut topping, its texture is creamier. Secondly, sellers usually put chestnut, sago or corn in the layer cake under coconut topping, while there is only the layer cake for Kanom thuai (Menu 8).

Ice cream Kati Sod Everyone knows ice cream but, for

Look choup This dessert is one of the most beautiful Thai desserts all the time. Some kids will fall into this food trap as the fruits look so real. They look almost too colorful and you are unsure whether these fake fruits are eatable. My advice is that you should avoid buying Look choup on the street as there is a chance that they will use artificial food coloring instead of natural food coloring. Buying Look Choup from reputable restaurants or cafes should be fine. Look choup’s main ingredients are green beans, sugar and natural food coloring.

coconut, coffee, Thai tea and even durian. Apart from that, you can also select 2-3 additional items such as sliced pumpkins, coconut jellies and peanuts.

Kanom tung tak As far as I know, there is no English name for this dessert. Kanom tung tak means a dessert for poor people (it’s cheap as it’s mainly made of flour and sugar). Nowadays is a lot more than just flour and sugar. Sellers normally add Custard cream, coconut meat and sometimes sliced corn as well.

Our Tip

original Thai-style ice cream, it’s kind of different. There are many flavors of Thaistyle ice cream for you to choose such as

You will find a lot of decent (and also notso-tasty) Thai desserts on the street but quite a few great ones. If you just wander around and you smell or see some of the menus above but you are unsure whether they taste good. You can ask sellers to give you a try before you buy. Thai people are kind, especially with foreigners, and some would be happy to hand you a small piece of the dessert they sell. If it tastes good, go for it. If it doesn’t, just say thank you to the sellers and leave.

Fifteen Years of The Anantara Hua Hin

Fifteen years ago the Anantara opened its doors in Hua Hin. The Anantara collection includes 35 luxury hotels and resorts in city, island and desert settings across Asia, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and Africa. At this five star Resort the quality of service, as well as food and beverage is just beyond the most discerning of expectations. The anniversary celebration was in an authentic Thai style atmosphere. The chilled drinks were served just before the sunset, with a combination of splendid Thai ‘starters’ such as rice/ shrimp crispy snacks and taro or sweet potatoes; so tasty. I especially enjoyed the Thai musical

instruments; a Thai dulcimer makes the atmosphere perfect for a 15th years anniversary celebration. This year celebrations were made even more special by the attendance of loyal regular guests, especially Mr and Mrs Garland. The couple has been valued guests for their holidays at the Anantara Hua Hin Resort and Spa since opening. I truly enjoyed the quality of the Anantara’s offerings to the guests; no matter whether they were a new face or as close as a family member. Seventy percent of the guests were regulars, not really a surprise me after this night, I can easily see why they return time after time. Congratulations to The Anantara, many more fabulous anniversaries to come! FOOD & Entertainment, April 2016

The Alpaca Restaurant; Amongst Cha-Am’s Finest

The first visit to the Alpaca Restaurant was an unplanned and very enjoyable evening. It then occurred to me then that Hua Hin Today really needed to feature this restaurant. First; about the alpacas. Yes there is a ‘family’ of these somewhat beguiling creatures in an enclosure in front of the restaurant in daylight hours and on show as a photographic opportunity. Second; alpacas are not on the menu, even though marketing alpaca as a gourmet delicacy has been on the rise in some countries for some years. The reason for this added attraction is the owner’s family connection with the Alpaca Hill Farm in Ratchaburi. This also means there is an understanding of what’s needed for alpaca care and welfare. But beyond the ‘alpaca viewpoint’ a level of sophistication and the prospect of dining in real style become apparent. There are three options however they meld together and share the same very extensive menu. First an attraction to families with young children may be to dine alongside a ‘kid’s playroom’ where children who have become bored with behaving themselves at the dining table can expend some energy amongst slides, castles and a multitude of other kid’s activities. Within parental gaze, but without disturbing the adult part of the family dinner.

Next; outside seating alongside a stream winding between tables, still casual but a step-up in sophistication. There’s a retracting roof which stayed that way during our moonlit evenings, but some insurance against an unexpected rain shower. This is also alongside a duo playing ‘music to dine with’ and adding a mellow background to the scene. The alpacas retired to their evening quarters around sunset and this seemed to be a signal to commence the entertainment. We know alpacas don’t appreciate flash lights, so maybe they’re not musical either. The third level of sophistication is for those who prefer to dine inside. This is where the Alpaca Restaurant reveals a claim to be a m o n g s t t h e m o re c l a s s y d i n i n g establishments around town and way above my ‘drive-by’ expectations. Customers who demand the elegance of the surroundings to match a fine culinary experience can be satisfied; stylish and refined without compromising privacy or creature comforts. We’ve already mentioned an extensive menu which incidentally also a work of graphic art. It’s just as well that the kitchen is also extensive with so many choices from Thai to Italian to seafood to grilled beef with sauces for all palates, soups and desert. My choice during the first visit was a Grilled Lamb Rack with Savory Fries. Maybe not all that adventurous, but so succulent and flavorsome and just what I was hoping for. The second time around our host Khun Chet provided the recommended menu which was also described on the table mat at the table. An enormous crispy pork knuckle and a full sized fried sea bass with a variety of

FOOD & Entertainment, April 2016

sauces and soups to complement these lavish offerings. But then desert; I had no idea what to expect before the ‘honey toast’ arrived. Really something like a half loaf in size (big enough for four), honey laden but also laden with cream, caramel filling, fruit alongside with a vanilla icecream topping. A celebration of all things sweet and very indulgent. Dining at the Alpaca Restaurant is a very pleasant experience. Surrounded by large scale condo developments on the Hua Hin to Cha-Am strip this is already a favourite for these residents wanting an accessible and stress free fine dining experience without needing to negotiate city traffic snarls. There’s even a coffee house and bakery on site to satisfy the need for a meeting place for a mid-morning break with the same advantages.

42 14 Provenance At The Centara

Words such as heritage, tradition or even colonial readily come to mind during afternoon tea at the Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin.

That’s because provenance; an attribute that can’t be either built or bought, is part of the fabric of the Centara. This is due to a history going back to 1923 when the resort, then known as the Railway Hotel, was opened to accommodate visitors to King Rama VI’s summer palace. This was an era of elegant opulence that’s now on show at The Museum Coffee & Tea Corner. Afternoon tea is one of the most quintessential of English customs. There is a wide selection of hotels in London offering an afternoon tea experience, including Claridges, the Dorchester, the Ritz and the Savoy, as well as Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Faithful to this custom, afternoon tea at the Centara offers a traditional setting with visual mementos of the past and an outlook over topiary gardens and scenic vistas towards the ocean. Afternoon tea can commence with a glass of Moet & Chandon champagne while considering the vast array of teas on offer from the more traditional English Earl Grey, Ceylonese or Indian (Darjeeling) through to fragrant Pink Flamingo or perhaps Moroccan Mint or Jasmine Queen. TWG Tea from Singapore is featured as the island has historically been a trading post for teas, spices and fine epicurean products. TWG Tea is recognised as the finest luxury tea brand in the world with the largest collection from well over 800 different single-estate, fine harvests and exclusive tea blends from all of the tea-producing countries. Afternoon Tea began as a tradition because the English gentry preferred dinner at around 8 PM, but needed to satisfy their hunger pangs well before that time. Following this tradition, afternoon tea at the Centara includes the presentation of a double layered platter; savory on the upper level and sweeter treats below. The traditional selection of dainty sandwiches and scones served with clotted cream

and preserves is honored but with a much wider selection than would ever have been imagined in bygone days. Afternoon tea is also an opportunity to enjoy the company of old acquaintances and a great way to meet new friends. Our companions included Thanyaporn Thirawat, Public Relations Manager at the Centara (Khun Bee) who was able to take ‘time-out’ from her demanding role. With music as a topic of conversation; we discovered that Khun Bee’s father introduced her to The Beatles and other Western popular music on the car radio when she was a teenager. One reason for the musical theme was being in the company of Centara Resident Harpist Chiara Capobianco. Chiara is a solo performer on her harp named ‘Daphne’; both being of Italian origin. Chiara was classically trained in Milan and has performed worldwide since 1990 before accepting the residency position at Centara after a holiday visit with her mother some three years ago. For Chiara a solo career is preferred over the restrictions of following an orchestra and the conductor’s demands. As a ‘free spirit’, solo suits her inclination to offer her own musical interpretations and inclinations. As a backdrop to afternoon tea, it’s hard to imagine anything better than the gentle and understated sounds of the harp. Chiara is not restricted to classical compositions but tries to gauge the audience preferences and is eager to respond to requests. She’ll even do some homework and learn something new if a request is outside her extensive repertoire. Apart from the sort of music you may expect to be played on a harp (Für Elise or Greensleeves), also included are Thai favourites, including compositions from the King of Thailand, as well as from the Beatles, Celtic melodies or even Led Zeppelin.

Khun Bee commented that for her the music of the harp conjures ‘heavenly’ images. Chiara’s version of ‘Stairway To Heaven’ certainly follows that theme. An introduction to ‘Daphne the harp’ revealed that she is a complex instrument with 47 strings and seven pedals to give half tones to the seven-note diatonic musical scale (do, ray me etc.). Daphne weighs around 80 lb (36 kilograms) and with a value of around 600,000 THB needs to be treated with respect and care. The harp may not be as mobile as some musical instruments; however it’s just ‘place and play’, so moving between the venues of the Centara is not too hard and the harp is much more flexible than a bulky and largely immobile piano. Afternoon tea at the Centara is a pleasure for all the senses. Guests can enjoy the sense of history and ambience of days gone by, whilst the taste buds are treated to delightful morsels and refreshing drinks. Add the pleasure of the company of an accomplished and welcoming harpist and you have all the ingredients for this Henry James quote to be realised. “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” (1917) More information Where: The Museum Coffee & Tea Corner, Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin. When: Every Friday to Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Museum Coffee & Tea Corner. Facebook: www.facebook.com/themuseumatchbr Phone: 032 512 021 FOOD & Entertainment, April 2016

15 43 Delicious Thai Dishes You Might Not Know About Yam Tua Plu

salad, is one of the most common Thai street food dishes. However, I much prefer the same blend of herbs and spices made with roasted catfish instead of pork. The smoky flavored catfish is deboned and merged with toasted rice flakes, chilli flakes, galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, fish sauce, and maybe a few sprigs of mint. What Are The World’s Happiest Countries?

The world’s happiest country is Denmark, followed closely by Switzerland and Iceland, according to a March 2016 report from the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network. All of the top 10 happiest countries are highly developed countries, and most are in Northern or Western Europe. All are rather ethnically homogenous, with strong social support networks. Burundi, a landlocked country in East Africa, scored as the least happy country, coming in behind Syria, Togo, Afghanistan and Benin. Most of the lowest-scoring countries are found in subSaharan Africa, are poor, and many have been recently ravaged by war or disease (or both). Among the most populous countries, China came in at 83 (out of 157) on the list, India at 118, the United States at 13, Indonesia at 79 and Brazil at 17. Thailand was rated at number 33, not as happy as fellow ASEAN country Singapore (22); but happier than Malaysia (47), Philippines (82), Vietnam (96), Laos (102) and Cambodia (140). The list was based on polls of people’s well-being in each country; the report’s creators talked to about 3,000 citizens in each. This was used to create a happiness score between zero and 10. Also factored into the final happiness score was real gross domestic product per capita; life expectancy; degree of social support; and perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity. The report was released ahead of the United Nations International Day of Happiness, on March 20th, which recognizes “happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world.”

48 Think About Saving Water, Even At Songkran

With the spectre of dry taps and water rationing looming, one question comes to mind - what can we do to play our part in saving water?

1. Wash your car less - or not at all. Do not wash your car often, human beings and animals need water more than these feeling-less gadgets.

2. Take quick showers Bathe once a day and have a quick bath instead of singing/ dancing/partying while having a bath and spending 45 minutes showering. With multiple baths a day, have one complete bath and use a minimum amount of water for the others.

5. Catch warming-up water Put a bucket in the shower while you’re waiting for the water to warm up, and use the water you catch for watering plants or cleaning.

6. Throw, don’t flush Don’t flush things down the toilet to dispose of them. Throw away tissues and other bathroom waste in the garbage can, which doesn’t require gallons of water.

3. Wash all your dirty dishes in one go

7. Wash full loads only

You can save water by washing plates and kitchen utensils in one go, using two big basins of clean water.

Only use your washing machine when it’s completely full.

Wipe any left-over food or stains away before dipping the used utensils into the first basin; put them into the second basin for a final cleaning.

4. Do not use running water for washing Don’t wash clothes or kitchen towels under running water. Instead, soak them in in a small bucket with soap powder and just enough water to cover them. Wash them once they are well soaked.

8. Water, not flood your plants Before watering your plants, check the soil in the pot with your finger first. If it’s damp, it doesn’t need any watering! Water only if the soil feels dry and hard.

9. Boil only what you need Boil food in as little water as possible to save water and energy. You only need to submerge your pasta and potatoes, for example. Also, with less water, you keep more flavour and nutrients in your veggies.

10. Songkran There have already been messages from high ranked government officials about saving water during Songkran. These messages are typically greeted with a cynical response by those who don’t really think that the ‘water warriors’ will be taking any notice; they’re probably right. For many regular Songkran victims, one wet day is probably enough, so maybe that should be the strategy. If you are on the bucket end, think about reducing your H2O attacks to only the first day or even half day. Of course if you are one of the victims, staying inside during the later days reduces targets and therefore water use. Chok Dee!

Geneva International Motor Show 2016 Opel Astra Is Car of the Year From ultra-luxury sports cars to 4x4 urban conquerors, the Geneva International Motor Show had gas guzzlers see their popularity rebound during the oil price slide.

While more practical, even modestly priced cars often win the top award, the Geneva show is synonymous with luxury and performance and the 2016 edition did not disappoint.

More than 120 new models from manufacturers across the world will be introduced at the 86th edition of Europe’s flagship auto show, with industry leaders boasting of a positive mood after the financial crisis of 2008-2013 fades for some consumers.

Bugatti unveiled the Chiron -- successor to the Veyron -which aims to take its place among the most powerful and fastest cars in the world. At an estimated price of 2 million euros ($2.2 million) it is also one of the most expensive.

That optimism comes despite the ongoing fallout from the Volkswagen pollution scandal.

Appealing to a broader market, the Geneva show included a full line-up of 4x4s, or SUVs -- a segment that now accounts for around 22 percent of overall European sales.

The show opened to the public on March 3rd, but an earlier ceremony awarded Opel/Vauxhall the coveted Europe’s Car of the Year title for its 2016 Astra commenced proceedings.

With oil prices plummeting from more than $100 in 2014 to below $35 a barrel, analysts said cheap fuel is making hybrid cars less of a priority for some buyers.

It beat off six challengers, including the Audi A4, the BMW Series 7 limousine, the Jaguar XE, Maza MX-5 roadster, the Skoda Superb and a Volvo 4x4, the XC90. It was the third time Opel has taken the big prize at the Geneva show, winning with a hatchback the 58-member jury of motoring journalists deemed “good value for money”, combining a compact frame with a roomy interior, a statement said.

Volkswagen dampens mood Last year’s Car of the Year winner was Volkswagen’s Passat, but the company kept a low profile this year after the scandal that followed revelations its diesel engine cars were secretly outfitted with devices to cheat US emissions tests. “Volkswagen will be more modest than usual. The company is trying to appear more open, more transparent and we

should see this new culture in Geneva,” said German car expert Stefan Braztel. In Geneva, the biggest European show since the scandal broke, Volkswagen aimed to change the gloomy narrative surrounding the brand. Organisers expected 650,000 to 700,000 visitors at the show which ran until March 13th, with 200 exhibitors from more than 30 countries. Source: Bangkok Post

Thailand Plots Course for An Electric Vehicle Future The Thai government is planning for 1.2 million electric vehicles in Thailand by 2036 and up to 1,000 charging stations to support them. A roadmap approved by the National Energy Policy Council sees the EVs introduced in three phases. It will begin this year with 200 electric bus fleets operating by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, The Nation newspaper reports.

“We would like electric vehicles to happen fast and hence we have come up with a clear-cut road map, because the world’s trend is moving that way,” Energy Minister General Anantaporn Kanjanara is quoted as saying: “By 2036, there will be 1.2 million EVs in Thailand. They will need at least 700, 800 or even 1,000 charging stations.” Twarath Sutabutr, Director General of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, says during the first phase officials will prepare related infrastructure, taxation, laws, regulations and service-fee structures. Deployment of EVs will be expanded during the second phase from 2017 to 2019, when the private sector will be allowed to get involved, but this will be limited to public fleets. EV use will be opened to the public in the third phase in 2020 when the government says it will offer support to help develop basic infrastructure, smart charging and vehicle-togrid systems. Meantime, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Ministry of Industry to devise a plan to promote investment in automotive industry with a focus on the manufacturing of future cars. The government’s National News Bureau says the Prime Minister has met with CEOs from Toyota, Isuzu,

Nissan and Honda to exchange opinions about automakers’ problems and obstacles in doing business in Thailand. He has told the executives that the government is urgently revising regulations while promoting free and fair trade in support of foreign investment in Thailand. Prayut wants Thai automakers to make the country a production hub of the “cars of the future.” He has told the Ministry of Industry and other agencies to offer a promotional package to launch next year. Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Chutima Bunyapraphasara tells The Nation the CEOs assured Prayut of their continued investment in Thailand and will continue to develop the cars of future – hybrids and vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen. The four automotive CEOs told Prayut they view Thailand as a manufacturing base with solid support from the domestic market. If the government has a new policy, they are ready to make the needed investment, Chutima says. Toyota, Isuzu, Nissan and Honda together account for 58% of Thailand’s auto exports, shipping 1.25 million units, led by pickup trucks, in 2015. The main markets for eco-cars are other ASEAN members, Australia, the Middle East, New Zealand and Mexico.

51 Grand Opening of True Arena, As Hua Hin moves to the International Sporting Stage There were guided tours, previews, football and tennis matches (including Fed Cup matches) and many more opportunities to check out the extensive sports and fitness facilities of the True Arena Hua Hin Sports Centre in the weeks leading up to the official Grand Opening.

Establishing True Arena was about a vision for Hua Hin to be a centre for international sporting events in Thailand as well as to enhance the recreational and fitness opportunities for both locals and visitors. That vision has been realised with the Grand Opening.

The Grand Opening on 18th March was a presentation of many Thailand elite sport’s performers demonstrating their skills with volleyball, futsbal, rugby, badminton, basketball, tennis, boxing and football players ‘strutting their stuff’ either at the indoor gymnasium or on the outdoor football fields and tennis courts.

Hua Hin is now ‘truly’ in the international sporting arena!

The main ‘100 plus’ tennis court was transformed with a stage to allow the presentation of Muay Thai and acrobatic performers before entertainers from ‘The Voice’ and ‘AF’ joined the show with a mini concert.

52 Off-Beat Holidays in April With April fool’s Day and Easter to take the cake this month, we are now counting down some of the off-beat yet surprising holidays to celebrate in the month of April.

14 April Reach-As-High-As-You-Can Day th

4th April Tell-A-Lie Day

Your Country’s National Day

April like any every other month has some National Days to celebrate across the world.

Evacuation Day (Syria)

Whoever coined the phrase the ‘sky is the limit’ will forever be wrong when it comes to Reach-As-High-As-You-Can day. Why to aim at the sky when you can’t even reach 10 feet; be realistic in what you aim for, that way even if you fail, it will hurt less! And when you achieve it, don’t say you won’t be glad that you did!

17th April Haiku Poetry Day

Evacuation Day, (also called Independence Day) is Syria’s national day commemorating the evacuation of the last French soldier and Syria’s proclamation of full independence and the end of the French mandate of Syria on April 17th, 1946. Not even a century later, how ironic that we are talking about Independence Day amidst desperation, ruins and devastation. This day is in our pick to shine a light on the refugee crisis and to recognise those who are desperately in need of help.

Be it a white lie, or ‘lie-lie,’ National Tell-A-Lie Day gives you just the opportunity to lie to your heart’s content. Sorry Parents and teachers, apparently ‘honesty is not the best policy’ this particular day. And whoever created Pinocchio, give this boy some rest, let him lie without his nose growing on this dishonest day!

“No one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land”

6th April Sorry Charlie Day Haiku having roots in Japanese poetry, is the 3 line poem. The first and last lines have 5 syllables and the middle line have 7.bbHaiku encourages an attempt to write very short but striking poems that can move souls; if one is blessed with such a gift.

Warsan Shire

Independence Day (Zimbabwe)

Wrote you a haiku Now it lies amidst the dust With forlorn faint words. Fair enough, a visual Haiku! 19th April Hanging Out Day

18th of April is observed as Independence Day in Zimbabwe, on the very day in 1980 Zimbabwe achieved independence from the Colonial British rule, for ninety years Zimbabwe was administered by a South African Company.

As much as we wish not to think about past mistakes and move forward, sometimes it’s just seems too much, this Sorry Charlie Day drown yourself in the pit of your past and recollect everything you ever did wrong, just so you know that you have made it this far having learnt your lessons.

‘Happy Birthday Zimbabwe!’

Independence Day (Sierra Leone)

7 April National Beer Day th

By Hanging out literally, in this sense, just clothes! Hanging out day is celebrated to shine a light on unnecessary consumption of energy, demonstrating that we humans can do basic task without relying too much on machines and save a penny or two.

30th April National Honesty Day

The world’s third most popular drink needs some appreciation and here comes ‘National Beer Day’ – what a lovely coincidence. Let’s utepils and watch the world pass by! (side note; Utepils is definitely not the English word, ah Norwegian, Google says.)

It is definitely parents and teachers’ way of getting back at us for National Tell-A-lie day, Enough, enough you guys won, but seriously in the same month. Anyways Honesty day does have its purpose, be honest as much as your conscience allow!

On 27th of April, 1961, Sierra Leone proclaimed its independence after British Colonial rule for more than 150 years. The streets of Freetown will see Independence parades, marches and concerts.

53 Sir Tom Jones The ‘Sex Bomb’ in Bangkok

Colouring Books For Grown-ups

Colouring books for grown-ups may be the new lifestyle craze, promising ways to combat stress, unleash our creative spirit and generally take time out from our increasingly tech-frazzled, gadgetobsessed lives.

Staedtler is a small family-run firm employing a workforce of around 2,000 and has seen demand for some of its coloured pencils explode, more or less overnight.

Bangkok will be treated to all of Tom Jones’ classic hits when the “Sex Bomb” singer performs at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani on Tuesday April 5th.

is receiving the best reviews of his career for his three most recent albums: Long Lost Suitcase, Spirit In The Room and Praise & Blame.

Tom won over the world’s hearts with his unforgettable tunes ‘It’s Not Unusual’, ‘Kiss’, ‘Delilah’, ‘What’s New Pussycat’ and of course ‘Sex Bomb’. He’s the undisputed king of romance and his powerful, unique voice remains unmatched throughout the years.

Queen Elizabeth II is a fan. She bestowed knighthood on Tom Jones in 2006. He’s also received BRIT Awards for Best Male and Outstanding Contribution to Music, a Silver Clef Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Hitmaker Award from the [US] Songwriters Hall of Fame, GQ Man of the Year, and the prestigious [UK] Music Industry Trust Award.

The Welsh singer was influenced early on by American soul music, blues and R&B. He idolized singers like Little Richard and Elvis Presley, who soon became his peers in the music world. Now at age 75, he’s sold over 100 million records and can boast a career spanning 50 years. But getting older definitely doesn’t mean slowing down. Tom

Tom’s concerts in Bangkok have always been a hit with Thai fans both young and old. Ticket prices are 2,500 THB, 3,500 THB and 4,500 THB. Tickets are available at all ThaiTicketMajor outlets, by calling 02-2623838.

But for the makers of crayons and colour pencils, the trend also poses a fundamental strategic question: is the current boom in demand just a passing fad or is it a new sustainable trend? “I dream about crayons at night,” says Andreas Martin, who manages a factory of the manufacturer Staedtler in Nuremberg, southern Germany. Staedtler is a small family-run firm employing a workforce of around 2,000 and has seen demand for some of its coloured pencils explode, more or less overnight. “These are models we’ve been making for years and demand always chugged along unspectacularly,” Martin said. “But then all of a sudden, we weren’t able to manufacture enough. It’s incredible.”

Just behind him, a machine spits out yellow ink pens at a rate of around 6,000 per hour. Another next to it is currently programmed to produce orange ones. On the next floor down, finished crayons in a kaleidoscope of different colours are packed into boxes of 20 or 36 for shipping to the United States, Britain or South Korea. Those are the countries at the centre of the current adult colouring craze, said Staedtler chief, Axel Marx.
