Foreign workers in Thailand are in the news. There has long been a reliance on workers from neighboring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos who accept unskilled and unwanted jobs in the construction and fishing sectors as well as factory work. The Visa status of these workers is now being questioned, much to the distress of so many displaced, vulnerable and sometimes stateless individuals and families.

Working as an ex-pat in Thailand without a Work Permit is and also very risky, especially with tour guides or drivers being amongst the more than 30 occupations prohibited to non-Thais. Substantial financial penalties may be imposed on both the employer and the employee with custody before deportation a distinct possibility. As the proud holder of a legitimate Work Permit, I can say from experience that applying is complex, time consuming and frustrating. Many turn to legal companies or other agents for Visa services (at a price), although this is not required if the employer understands what is needed and is prepared to provide bundles of paperwork to multiple government agencies. There’s no one-stop shop for this process! At the time of writing this column my fingers are firmly crossed that the reported AirAsia proposal for flights between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur really takes off. We know there have been a number of start-stop services in the past. For me that would mean a huge travel time reduction to Australia. This proposal is really about putting Hua Hin on then International travel map at last; here’s hoping!

4 Thai Laws to Manage Foreign Workers in the Spotlight Thailand has introduced new laws aimed at controlling the number of illegal migrant workers in the country; however a 6 month suspension of the laws was announced soon after the enactment.
The new law requires all migrant workers to hold proper documents prior to be employed in Thailand, unlike past practices where some workers enter the country and work prior to have their nationality verified to obtain documents. The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) has stepped up its work to create understanding towards the intentions of the decree, underlining that it mandates proper treatment of migrant workers and adherence to labor laws.
Foreigners found working without a work permit face fines of between 2,000 – 100,000 THB or imprisonment for a maximum of 5 years. Foreigners who engage in work different to that which is registered in their work permit will be fined up to 100,000 THB. Under the new laws, people who employ foreign workers illegally will also face tougher punishments, with employers set to face fines of between 400,000 – 800,000 THB for each foreigner they employ illegally.

However in July Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs Wissanu Krea-ngam confirmed that invoking Article 44 of the interim constitution will delay enforcement of the migrant labor law. While the enforcement is suspended, migrants illegally working in Thailand are granted impunity to travel back to their home country to apply for a work permit. Following the suspension, the Prime Minister urged society not to overreact to the government’s new Royal Decree but affirmed that the regulation is needed and employers and employees must comply to its rules.

Migrant workers are employed at many construction sites. DPM Wissanu gave a strong assurance that during the 6-month suspension of the law, there will be no arrests, detentions, or charges pressed against foreign workers traveling in and out of the country. More than 500 illegal migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar have been abandoned by their employers or had left their jobs under threat of punishment. The workers were left stranded when their employers refused to take them back. In Mae Sot district, bordering Myanmar, more than 400 illegal Myanmar workers were reported to have crossed back into their country after Thai businesses decided not to hire them

It has been reported that a severe labor shortage will lead to a steep rise in seafood prices in Thailand. More than 3,500 fishing boats have remained in port as more than 80,000 crew members have left their jobs. Estimates indicate that the price of seafood may go up by 70% during the high season months of November 2017-February 2018. The Kasikorn Research Centre has warned that the new foreign labor laws could have significant impact on some industries, particularly the agricultural sector as it caused thousands of migrant workers to leave. The centre said the absence of migrant workers could cause 12.4 billion THB of damages to the economy, accounting for 0.03% of country’s GDP.
“In the case where the Head of the National Council for Peace and Order is of opinion that it is necessary for the benefit of reform in any field and to strengthen public unity and harmony, or for the prevention, disruption or suppression of any act which undermines public peace and order or national security, the Monarchy, national economics or administration of State affairs, whether that act emerges inside or outside the Kingdom, the Head of the National Council for Peace and Order shall have the powers to make any order to disrupt or suppress regardless of the legislative, executive or judicial force of that order. In this case, that order, act or any performance in accordance with that order is deemed to be legal, constitutional and conclusive, and it shall be reported to the National Legislative Assembly and the Prime Minister without delay.”

6 Thailand’s PM is Concerned about Alcohol Consumption
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is concerned about the drinking habits of the Thai people, especially among young people aged 15-19, says government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd. “Alcohol is the main cause of road accidents, especially during festivals and long holidays,” he said. “Alcohol also leads to other social problems such as family violence, brawls and crimes.”

Air Asia Aims to Commence Hua Hin - Kuala Lumpur Flights
“The airport can handle 300 passengers per hour,” he said. “The proximity to the town is a major bonus for travelers”. He said that some matters will need to be sorted; top of the list are the need for immigration and customs facilities as flights to KL are international. And discussions need to take place as to exactly what transport arrangements are put in place to ferry passengers from the airport to local destinations. International flights at Hua Hin Airport would be a major boost for local Tourism The airports authority (AO) has received a proposal from Air Asia to operate daily flights between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After few recent developments on the prospect of Hua Hin becoming a direct international destination, local tourism operators are hoping that will soon change. If the proposal is given green light it will mean commercial use of the airport that is just a handful of kilometres from the city centre and could be a major boon for tourism. Mr. Duntoon Sangcham, Director General of the Airport Department said that Air Asia want landing fees and rental charges for airport facilities waived in the initial stages of operation to get the route started. If agreed by the AO and related agencies, the first international flights could be coming to the resort by the end of 2017. A decision on the Air Asia proposal is expected to be made at in early August. 9 Celebrating HM The Queen’s Birthday & Mother’s Day 2017 August 12th is one of the most important days of celebration on the Thai calendar. The Queen’s Birthday is a
celebration to respect the mother of Thailand when people pray for happiness and long life for Her Majesty the Queen traditional Mother’s Day celebrations. Early in the morning, ceremonies are held to give offerings of food to Thailand’s saffronrobed Buddhist monks. Schools in Thailand typically host a Mother’s Day ceremony. Students may spend weeks beforehand rehearsing performances and the proper steps of the ceremony. On the special day, mothers come to their child’s school and each child kneels at his or her mother’s feet, paying respect to mom for all that she has done for them. Within these heartfelt moments, it’s common to see mothers wiping tears from their eyes and many children doing the same (and sometimes onlookers as well). It’s also become quite common for families to celebrate their love for mom by taking her out for a special meal. Many restaurants offer Mother’s Day specials. Hotels and resorts also offer Mother’s Day packages. So you may want to be on the lookout for restaurant and hotel specials. Mosquitoes use vision (along with scent) to locate humans, so wearing colors that stand out (black, dark blue or red) may make you easier to find.
You’re trying your best to enjoy an evening barbeque, but a constant swarm of mosquitoes follows you from grill to poolside. As you swat madly at the pests, you notice that others seem completely unfazed. Could it be that mosquitoes prefer to bite some people over others?
Movement Similarly, the more you move, the easier you are to identify as a living, breathing vessel. Avoid swatting (that’s hard!); they are attracted to movement and it encourages them. Blood Type Research shows that certain blood types are more appetising than others. One study found that mosquitoes landed on people with Type O blood nearly twice as often as those with Type A. People with Type B blood fell somewhere in the middle of this itchy spectrum. Additionally, about 85 percent of people secrete a chemical signal through their skin that indicates which blood type they
have. Mosquitoes are also more attracted to secretors than nonsecretors regardless of which type they are For the Mosquito Magnets The bad news is that if you are amongst the “high attractor type” there’s not a lot you can do to avoid being a target apart from applying repellents. Up to 85 percent of your susceptibility is purely genetic. There’s a commonly expressed view in Thailand that foreigners are more attractive to mosquitoes than Thai people. There’s no scientific backing but if it’s true then genetic factors may provide an explanation. Another unsubstantiated notion is that eating real Thai food provides some protection. If you are a mosquito magnet, why not try eating more of the local cuisine. Even if it makes no difference, the sensational flavours will mean you’ll be thinking less about those pesky mozzies!
Warnings Issued About High-flying Sky Lanterns, Rockets, Balloons and Drones Dangers to aviation and property, but also to national security, have been voiced with a variety of high-flying small objects under scrutiny and operators risking significant penalties. Meanwhile those who control drones and take pictures of the air bases or other military facilities may face legal action if their acts compromise national security, Air Force commander-in-chief ACM Jom Rungsawang has warned. The warning was issued after reports that the air force had ordered its legal team to examine a clip in the social media by someone who used a drone to take pictures of the Air Force base and posted this on social media.
A report made by a Thai pilot, referred to a sky rocket at 20,000 feet, both rockets and hot air balloons have been spotted and the problem to flying planes is increasing. Traditionally fire rockets made from bamboo have been used as a call for rain. However metal or PVC piping has increased the capability of these rockets without considering the dangers posed to aircraft. Rocket manufacturers must be officially licensed according to the Act of Firearm, Explosive Substances, Fireworks and the Firearm Equivalent of B.E. 2490 (1947) Additionally damage to property may result from forest or house fires. Balloons that are capable of flying longer and higher can potentially result in damage to planes if they are drawn into the engine. A campaign to highlight these dangers has also described existing regulations which includes a requirement that one week prior to the release of balloons or rockets, aviation and airport authorities be informed of the date, time, venue as well as the number of the balloons or rockets to be released. There are size restrictions on balloons and rockets with release near airports also being illegal. During the release, a coordinator should inform the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) which will then warn the plane not to pass the area where the balloons and rockets are launched.
ACM Jom said that taking pictures of the Air Force facilities were prohibited and may be deemed as violating laws on the security of military facilities. He noted that drone photography can be used by those with an ill-intent to plot sabotage or attack military facilities.
He appealed to members of the public who saw any such photography to notify the air force. He warned people not to fly their drones to take pictures of military facilities. Although not mentioned in these warning, reminders about the sensitivity of royal property is also relevant.
11 Rail Projects Progress
The cabinet has approved the proposed construction of the first section of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train project with budget of 179 billion THB. The project will be 100% government funded.
Kobsak Futrakul, a vice minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, said the State Railway of Thailand will build the first section between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima with construction to begin in September scheduled to be completed in four years, he said. “Thailand will be responsible for the construction, while China will be responsible for design,” said Thai Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith. Passengers will be able to travel from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima in 1 hour and 17 minutes with one-way fares costing 535 THB, the government said. Trains will cover the roughly 260-kilometre route at a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Traveling the same distance using a provincial bus takes 4-5 hours.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has used orders under Article 44 of the interim charter to grant multiple legal exemptions to the rail project, which has been delayed for almost two years. The project will add another metre gauge track to run parallel to the existing one, creating a double-track system with separate tracks for incoming and outgoing traffic. Stricter Anti-tobacco Laws Introduced
The updated Tobacco Products Control Act 2017 has come into effect with increased measures to protect non-smokers’ rights and to try and prevent youths smoking. Altogether 168 “beautiful” phone numbers were put on public auction – the second this year – but only 32 numbers were auctioned off. The number which fetched the highest bidding price was 095-999-999 at 4.8 million THB followed by 095-666-6666 and 096-000-0000 which fetched three million THB each. The phone numbers with six digits of the same number were auctioned off at a starting price of 500,000 THB with number 092-899-9999 fetching the highest bid at 1,004,999 THB. No bidders offered bids for phone numbers which have nine digits of similar number whose starting bidding price was 20 million
THB and six million THB for numbers which have eight digits of similar number. After deduction of expenses incurred by the auction, revenue from the auction will be handed over by the NBTC to the Finance Ministry.
Key measures in this law include a ban on selling tobacco products to people aged under 20, and a ban on people aged under 18 selling tobacco products. The measures also include a ban of selling tobacco products at religious sites, hospitals and pharmacies, all educational institutes, and public parks, zoos and amusement parks. There is also a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising and marketing, and on tobacco businesses conducting corporate social responsibility activities.
Violators of a smoking ban in a public place face a fine of 5,000 THB, while business owners must warn patrons not to smoke or face a fine of 3,000 THB. According to Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, up to 50,000 people die from smoking-related illnesses per year in Thailand. He said the government spends up to 75 billion THB each year on treating such patients.
Sponsoring individuals or organizations to promote products is also outlawed, while businesses are not allowed to display products for sale and can’t sell loose cigarettes.

12 Thailand’s ‘Super-Baht’ May Be Too Strong For Its Own Good
Two decades ago, Thailand became ground zero of the Asia financial crisis, when its government scrapped a dollar peg with the baht, a devaluation that unleashed a wave of speculative attacks on other regional currencies and shook the global economy. Now, the baht is again posing challenges for Thailand--but this time because it may be too strong. growth is accelerating on a nascent export recovery, tourism income and government outlays. But it remains the weakest in emerging Southeast Asia at just over 3 percent. The current stretch of military rule is the longest since the early 1970s, in a country that has endured about a dozen coups since putting an end to absolute monarchy in 1932. A new constitution promulgated in April set the stage for a possible return to some form of democracy next year.
Near-record foreign exchange reserves and a currentaccount surplus have burnished the baht’s appeal as a regional haven and attracted foreign capital to Thai bonds. The currency is the strongest performer in Southeast Asia in the past year. The super baht, however, is a complication for policy makers trying to nurture a recovery in an economy where exports account for about 70 percent of gross domestic product.

Amid the political uncertainty at home, Thai businesses invested a record $13 billion abroad in 2016, dwarfing inflows of $1.6 billion. The government is trying to turn the focus back on domestic opportunities. The administration has unveiled 56 major infrastructure projects worth about 2.3 trillion baht ($68 billion), Bank of Ayudhya Pcl research shows. Thailand 4.0 is partly focused on a proposed 1.5 trillion baht investment over five years to add railways, new cities and modern industry on the eastern seaboard, a plan the government says can link with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. 13 Cyclist in a Fatal Accident on the Beach Road at Cha-Am
A 60-year-old Thai woman died during the busy July long weekend after her bike struck a pedestrian on the Cha-Am beach road. The woman then came off her bicycle and finished under the wheel of an adjacent tour bus. The obstruction of foot pathways either beachside by vehicles parked just over the curb or by vendors blocking the footpath across the road remains a big public safety issue at the Cha-Am beach. A tragic irony of this incident is that many cycle hire shops on footpaths are serial offenders. The frequent presence of large multi-wheeled tour buses also poses a hazard to cyclists and motorbike riders apart from to walkers. Many say these vehicles should be kept away from this busy single laned road, especially on busy weekends.
The scene of the tragic accident The cyclist, wearing a cycling helmet, was named as Suchanan Santijitrungreuang, an assistant to the director of a school in Bangkok. She was rushed to hospital in Phetchaburi after the midday accident but was declared dead that evening. The accident, caught on CCTV, shows the pedestrian walking on the busy Ruamchit Road behind vehicles parked just over the curb, beach-side leaving no room to walk past and still stay off the road. The cyclist travelled along the road between the parked vehicles and a tour bus then glanced off the pedestrian into the path of the bus alongside. The bus was travelling at little more than walking pace but appeared to have no chance to brake. It is unlikely that the driver had seen what had happened. The accident happened across the road from the junction of Soi 3 (north).

The Hua Hin Thai Women Group has founded a traditional dancing group to take part in the upcoming funeral of King Bhumibhol and pay respect to Thai monarchy from past to present The new dance group, with the Mayor of Hua Hin as an advisor and Ms. Thipphawan Suthat, a Hua Hin Hua Hi Hhhhteacher as chairperson, has around 200 members. An early objective is to perform classical Thai dances at the funeral of the late King in October. The group will also perform the dances at Rajabhakti Park to pay homage to all Thai monarchs and promote exquisite classical Thai dance to both Thai and foreign visitors to Hua Hin. According to Ms. Thipphawan, the traditional dancing group will be launched on 3rd September at a Thai ceremony when art students pay respect to their masters organised by a famous Thai artist Bunlert Natphinit. This ceremony will also give the students morale according to traditional Thai belief. After the official ceremony for the group’s establishment, members will compose traditional Thai dancing music to honor Thai monarchs. The lyrics will be created by academics and poets from Burapha University and Cholburi Vocational College. Ms. Thipphawan said that the dancing group was set up because members respect the
King Bhumibhol and the monarchs who ruled Thailand in the past. The group will foster and pass on classical Thai dancing arts to the younger generation in Hua Hin. The group is welcoming more female members of Thai and foreign nationalities. Members will practice classical Thai dance offered by the group every month. “Traditional Thai dance started in the reign of King Rama II. Now, it is included in the area of the fine arts at university level. This consists of literary studies, painting, architecture, sculpture, music and dancing. This proves that Thailand is a culturally civilised and sophisticated country. Despite globalisation, Thai people, both young and old, should be eager to foster and pass on the knowledge to the next generation. Otherwise, it is forgotten,” concluded Ms. Thipphawan.
The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, the Deputy Mayor Ms. Phailin Kongphan and the Mayor’s Secretary Mr. Atichart Chaisri have met with fishermen from Khlong Takiab and Khao Tao following reports that some houses were intruding onto water course in the areas. Owners were asked to pay fines with the people then asking authorities to reconsider the regulations and the amount of fines and to postpone the date of law enforcement. Authorities from Harbour Department explained to the fisherman that the 17th Act of Navigation in Thai Waters of 2017 had been in effect since 23rd February. Those who own a houses or buildings intruding onto the water courses should
have informed the Harbour Department by 22nd June. The main objective of the Act is to take care of water courses and control any houses or buildings along the river or on the beach for the sake of commercial navigation, agriculture and natural disaster prevention. Due to the stress and problems being experienced by fishermen, the Harbour Department has proposed some measures to help them. This included fine payments, compensation and extension of the period to inform the authorities. The proposal was presented to the Transport Ministry and the authorities hope that the fishermen in the two areas would accept this resolution.

16 A Stretch or a Stroll at the Cha-Am Forest Park If you enjoy exercise by way of a gentle stroll, ‘power walking’, bicycle riding or even breaking into a jog, there’s probably only two places to do this within a few kilometres of the Cha-Am town centre.
Families and couples come here to chill out and picnic. You will see a mix of Thai people, tourists and expats who have found an alternative to ‘elbow exercise’ at the bar.
After all it’s no fun trying to negotiate Cha-Am ‘footpaths’ which are far from user friendly if you don’t appreciate dodging street vendors or bicycle hire shops. The likelihood is you’ll spend more time on the road with ‘footpaths’ crowded with everything except pedestrians.

The Forest Park entrance is just a couple of kilometres south of town off the main road. The area was established on the 4th March 1992 and part of Don Masang National Reserved Forest.
There’s also an area to set up overnight camps around the lakes, as well as park-operated bungalows. It’s not a campout in the jungle but a relaxing overnight excursion in beautiful natural surrounds.
It sits on a lowland area covered in shady trees and a wide range of tropical plants. Crisscrossing the park, a large, freeform lake is home to species of water birds and an island with colonies of white-handed gibbons and bird-life. It offers long walks protected by shady trees and natural flora and fauna.
This is not a sophisticated park and some maintenance is long overdue. One example is invasive grasses choking some waterways. However as a convenient ‘chill-out’ venue for family outings and school groups looking for relaxed parkland nearby but away from city traffic it’s hard to beat.
There’s plenty of options for a peaceful day’s outing One alternative is the beach. But if that’s not your thing, or for that matter a bicycle ride is preferred, then the ChaAm Forest Park is the place. An asphalted path invites you to meander through the forest setting, perhaps in the early morning or late afternoon. There are also many simple structures for your exercises.

Why it’s OK to Charge Tourists More
The subject of Thailand’s 2 tiered system with foreigners charged more for certain goods and services than the local population is often a source of angst. This abridged version of an essay from ‘theconversation. com’; a forum for online academic opinion, gives another perspective. It also shows that prices for tourists aren’t only controversial in Thailand! “It was recently reported that cafes in Bruges (Belgium) charge tourists 10% more than locals for chips. Explained as a discount for customer loyalty, tourists automatically end up in a higher price bracket.
Venice’s vaporetti, or water buses charge outsiders 7 euros for a ticket whereas locals are charged just 1.30 euros.
Philippe Thijs claims to sell “the best Belgian fries and says that his restaurant has “another button on the cash register’ especially for locals.
Such differential pricing may seem unfair. But if locals had to start paying the same prices as tourists, it’s likely that many of them would be prevented from enjoying heritage sites in their own communities. Many would be priced out of their own homes. Their wages are rarely anywhere close to the levels of their traveling guests.
Recognising the positive contribution that tourists can make is important, but, of course, one needs to be aware when informal “tourist taxes” and inflationary practices become exploitative and fraudulent. When a family in Rome was charged £54 for four ice creams, it made international newspapers, prompting concerns about the way some operators hike the price up for visitors.
This reminded me of a conversation between two tourists in Sicily who felt they were regarded as ‘walking wallets’ by local shop owners, a sentiment often hinted at by holidaymakers when walking foreign streets. As the summer holiday season fast approaches, it’s perhaps timely to question the ethics behind inflated prices for tourists. One of the most famous places for hiking prices up for visitors is Venice. The city’s ‘two-tier system’ became so extreme that a complaint reached the European Commission in 2015, which claimed discriminatory practices against tourists – the complaint was rejected. 24 Thailand’s Eco-Cars – A Good Deal for the Environment, the Economy & the Driver
The Thai government began the first phase of the eco-car program 10 years ago in July 2007, with stage two commencing in 2013 Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki applied for the first phase of the project and received exemptions for tax and import duty for machinery and equipment, and as much as a 90% reduction in import duties for raw materials and finished parts. The automakers earmarked at least 50% of their eco-car production for export.
The Nissan March was the first eco car in Thailand and launched in 2010. In July 2016 the company celebrated the 500,000th eco-car from the assembly line, with exports to 13 countries around the world.

Models must emit no more than 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, down from 120 grams per kilometre. Fuel efficiency must be 4.3 litres per 100 km, up from 5 litres per km in the first phase. Engine displacement should not exceed 1.3 litres for gasoline models and 1.5 litres for diesel models.

The eco-car movement has placed Thailand at the forefront of vehicle manufacturing in South-East Asia and across the world; but what is the ‘Eco-Car’ Program in Thailand? The policy aims to produce energy-saving and environmentally friendly cars. Or, as we now know them, “Eco Cars”. The second car I owned was a Morris 850, then known by everyone as the Mini. Some years later another Morris-inspired car was my 1967 ‘baby blue’ MGB; dramatically different from the Mini.
Small cars have come a long way since those ‘Morris days’. the MG badge was the same but otherwise a very different driving experience. The MG brand (Morris Garage) was purchased in 2005 by the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Group which merged into SAIC in 2008. The first all-new model from MG, the MG 6, was officially launched in 2011. The Rayong-assembled MG3 is the second MG to be introduced to Thailand. The hatch
tapped into its 90 years of heritage being designed and engineered at the company’s Longbridge facility in Birmingham. The MG 3 is a fresh-faced, handsome little car, bristling with sports-car styling cues: the wide mesh grille, the edgy up-turned LED running lights, and the blacked-out A-pillars that create a wrap-around look to the windscreen. It’s a very neat piece of design.
The new MG 3 is incredibly spacious, thoroughly practical, and far more engaging to drive than it has any right to be; it exudes a beguiling sense of British ‘cool.’ One could say the MG 3 is the spiritual successor to the old Mini with the sporting edge of my MGB. Kerala is a coastal state in the South West of India, is it regarded as India’s most affluent state and a tropical paradise and nicknamed ‘God’s own country’ or the ‘Spice Garden of India’. It is a safe and wise introduction to India.

Cochin or Fort Kochi or just Fort is a port city, it was known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, a spice trading centre from the 14th Century onwards. The city passed through many different hands, first the Portuguese then the Dutch and finally the British, traders flocked to these shores for over 600 years. Giant fishing nets are cantilevered and plunged into tidal waters at regular intervals. Each is manned by four people working tirelessly for meager returns.
A guide to navigate narrow waterways I employed a guide to propel me through the tiny waterways for a couple of days. I witnessed small scale family industries like coconut husk retting, a process used in the production of fibre from coconut husks to produce coir, a tough twine that has multiple uses. Local boat builders use techniques handed down through countless generations. It’s also a bird watcher paradise. Spice traders on the streets
Chinese fishing nets near the quay are a must see. Walk around Jew Town early in the morning and you will be rewarded with Muslim traders opening their dilapidated wholesale warehouses with sacks of spices, the aroma of cloves, turmeric, ginger, cardamoms and cumin is everywhere.

Mantacherry has many curio shops, the Dutch Palace and the 16th/17th Century Pardesi Synagogue. The maritime museum has exhibits from the early Dutch and Portuguese trading days, and information relating to the Indian Navy. Visit St Francis Church and you will find the gravestone of Vasco De Gama, who died and was buried here for 14 years before his body was transported to Lisbon. You shouldn’t miss the return public ferry from Fort Cochin to the New Town and transport hub of Ernakulum Town. The 30 minute journey will take you pass old and new, decrepit quay side buildings, stumbling into the sea, huge super tankers belching diesel fumes rushing to the markets of the world, and industrial cityscape views, all for a few rupees. Perhaps travel further south to enjoy the many canals or backwaters with public ferry boats and cruise boats for rent. From here you can catch boats to a number of homestays, a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban India. HUA HIN TODAY, August 2017

‘2 Person Best Ball’ is a golf format for teams of two. These two golfers play their own golf balls throughout and the lower score between them on each hole counts as the team score. That was the format for the inaugural InterContinental Pairs Classic 2017 played at the Banyan Golf Club Hua Hin last month. The trio of the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, Banyan Golf Course and Siam PGA (that’s Professional Golf Arrangements) presented an event which is destined to be a fixture on the local golfing calendar. Andy Harris, Managing Director of Siam PGA, was the instigator and is a Welsh born golf promoter with many years’ experience in golf promotion in the USA, apart from in Thailand and other parts of SE Asia. Andy is a fan of the format and was on hand to coordinate the day’s proceedings.

For golfers of all abilities who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Golf provided by Rules guru and author Barry Rhodes. Each month 5 new Questions & Answers will be shown; here are numbers 56 - 60. TRUE or FALSE? An Expats Guide to Playing Football in Hua Hin Hua Hin has eight different artificial football pitches which are currently in use. Whether it’s at Football Station, Superbo, Midfield, Lek FC, Monkey Field or any of the other venues there is bound to be a football game going on every night of the week.
The other team is called Xplode and they practice every Saturday night at 7 pm at Superbo, which is situated directly opposite Hua Hin Hospital on Phetkasem Road. They also play at 7 pm on Monday nights at the Midfield pitch which is on Soi 6.
There are two expat teams in Hua Hin who practice together on a regular basis. The Hua Hin Vikings are based at Football Station on Soi 94 and practice there every Monday and Friday at 4:30 pm, although every now and again they play on one of the pitches at True Arena.
Both clubs are very welcoming to new players. Initially the Hua Hin Vikings was formed by Scandinavians while Xplode was founded by an Englishman, but both clubs now have players from all over the world, including Thailand. On June 26th the Vikings took on Xplode in an 11 a side match at True Arena. The former were 6-2 winners at the end of a highly competitive game played in some blustery conditions. Competitions are periodically organised by local government organisations in Hua Hin and Cha-Am. There’s always prize money involved and the competition can be intense but anyone looking to get involved in a less formal tournament should check out the annual Hua Hin World Cup.

379 The West Bromwich Albion ‘Young Baggies’ Come to Town Last month’s visit by Premier League Club West Bromwich Albion’s Under 16 Academy young stars of the future has provided a huge boost for our youth football.
The visit was a memorable experience for young Thai footballers with clinics provided by WBA Youth Academy staff and a match to be remembered against Thailand’s young All Stars. However our visitors were also able to learn and gain invaluable international experience with their first taste of Thai hospitality and culture. This was the first time an official English Premier League youth team has come to Thailand; however the visiting Club is no stranger to Asia. It is now 39 years since Albion became the first English professional club to travel to China in an historic trip. The Club is again competing in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong against rivals Liverpool, Leicester City and Crystal Palace later this month.
Our discussions with the WBA Youth Academy Coach Peter Gilbert and members of the visiting squad confirmed that their trip had exceeded all expectations with the frequent comment that they have enjoyed facilities of a ‘Premier League’ standard. The visiting U16 team was touted one of the strongest U16 teams developed by West Bromwich Albion, having already beaten Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton this season. A number of future English star players came with this team, with more than five now playing for England and Scotland.

Golf’s third major of the year saw reigning champ Henrik Stenson ranked outside the top ten contenders at 25/1. Dustin Johnson was the favorite at 10/1. Behind him were Jon Rahm (12/1), Jordan Spieth (12/1), Rory McIlroy (15/1), Justin Rose (15/1), Rickie Fowler (15/1), Sergio Garcia (15/1) and Tommy Fleetwood (20/1). Thongchai Jaidee was making his 11th appearance at the British Open. The other two Thais at Royal Birkdale were teenager Phachara Khongwatmai and 51-year-old Prayad Marksaeng. Ranked number three in the world, US golfer Jordan Spieth was the eighth first-time Open winner in the last nine years. A three shot lead going into the last round was erased after just four holes. He went on to seal the deal late with a flurry of birdies and eagles on the back nine and won by three shots over fellow American Matt Kuchar to take the Claret Jug at 12 under with a 268.
This was also a big week for Banyan Golf Club Superintendent Minachai Srichanya who had been invited to demonstrate his agronomy skills at The Open Championship.
As the Champion Golfer Spieth won US$1,845,000 with a total prize fund of US$10,250,000.

Golf Tip Choose your Stance for the Club You might have been told that your ball position should change depending on the club you’re using. For shorter irons, many people contend that the ball should be played in the middle of the stance, but hitting longer clubs requires the ball position to be more forward. Their reasoning: Shafts vary in length, so you need to adjust because each club will bottom out in a different place. The problem with changing your ball position for every club is that it becomes guesswork as to where the ball should be played to hit it solidly and a reliable distance. For example, you might hit your 9-iron 130 yards on one swing,

but then hit it 140 on the next because your ball position changed a little. A far more reliable way to ensure you control your distance is to play the ball in the same spot -- no matter what club you’re using. To tailor your address position to match the club’s length, all you have to do is change the width of your stance (above). The longer the club, the wider the stance. You’ll notice that your right shoulder tilts slightly lower than your left as your stance widens. So where exactly should you play the ball? If you drew
an imaginary line from your left shoulder joint, at address, to the ground, this would represent the low point of your swing. Because you want to make ball-first contact and then have the iron bottom out just in front of the ball, you should play it just under your left pectoral muscle. The width of your stance will become second nature once you continue to keep the ball in the same spot. From Chef of the Month to Dining Experience of the Month Our visit to the Rest Detail Hotel was to review information for our regular feature – ‘Chef of the Month’. However hosts Khun Jack, Prawate Khumchart and his assistant Khun Jaa, had much bigger ideas. Before too long we were enjoying a delicious 3 course dining experience to remember!

The Rest Scene Restaurant shares the décor and colour schemes evident throughout the hotel. There is a consistent theme which is perhaps a little Scandinavian in its cooling and simple tones. Never austere or dull; just contemporary, gentle and inviting. The restaurant has a vista across an infinity pool to the open ocean, a scene of tranquility to match the surrounds. The months of July and August complete the mango season in Thailand, so I selected a Mango Margarita from the choice of five ‘Mango Lovers’ offerings as the perfect pairing intro to the seafood main course. With its perfect combination of sweet and sour, this cocktail was a great way to intensify the flavours of the dishes to come. First Asparagus Bisque as a light and creamy soup accompanied by garlic bread with
a swirl of cream adding an artistic touch and visual appeal to the delicate flavours. Something akin to the coffee cup art that is now so popular. Snowfish or Ocean Cod highlighted a delicacy which is much sought after in many parts of the world; in this case prepared from whole fish imported from Norway. The white flaky flesh of buttery fillets falls apart when prepared with expertise and is soft-textured and mildly flavored. Our main course of Teriyaki Snow fish (see Chef of the Month below) offered just that and more. Teriyaki marinade added a fusion element to the dish as a Japanese inspired glaze of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. The dark glaze against the snow white fish flakes and the slightly sweet though salty teriyaki flavours provided the perfect seafood marinade.
Our final course continued the mango experience with a frozen Mango Mousse accompanied by strawberries, dragonfruit balls and a raspberry sauce atop a biscuit base and garnished with mint leaves. This was a delicate, refreshing and artistic finalé which was a wickedly sweet though not overpowering conclusion to our unexpected gourmet experience. Dining at the Rest Scene Restaurant let us relish some of the subtleties that characterises the Rest Detail Hotel. Just as a stay at this resort (it’s much more than a hotel) is a relaxing but not an overwhelming experience, dining at the Rest Scene is delicately complex and understated. We left the restaurant feeling completely satisfied but not weighed down after experiencing a perfect combination of matched fusion flavours.

Name: Grilled Teriyaki Snow fish with Mayo Wasabi Sauce Description: The white flaking fillets of snow fish contrast with the sweet/salty brown crust of Teriyaki to provide a subtle and light flavour for this classic fusion dish. Ingredients: Filleted Snow fish (160 grams per serve) Olive oil Teriyaki sauce Lime juice Mayo wasabi sauce. Garnish: Consider Zucchini, Purple eggplant, Capsicums, Kaiware sprouts, Fried ginger, Ebiko Method: 1. Marinate the snow fish with salt, black pepper and lime juice. 2. In non-stick pan, grill the snow fish with olive oil until brown then turn onto the other side. 3. Heat the teriyaki sauce until boiling then pour onto the grilled snow fish, keep excess teriyaki in a small jug. 4. Remove grilled snow fish from the pan to the plate with the garnish and wasabi mayo sauce. In Thailand, sharing food is part of the culture. If you head to any outdoor eating area or market, you will see people sharing either a Thai BBQ or Hot Pot. For travellers to Thailand, this may seem a bit daunting; either how to order or to eat. Moo Graathaa First is the Thai BBQ or Moo Graathaa; the name literally means ‘pork pan’ in Thai, though often seafood, chicken or beef are also included. It resembles a combination of a Korean BBQ and a Chinese Hot Pot, with broth almost like a moat surrounding the domed grill plate. The Thai version is heated over charcoal, whereas in other parts of Asia, a small gas cylinder may be used. You are served a variety of sliced meats or seafood plus a raw egg on the same plate; the egg is mixed in with the proteins ready to go on the BBQ plate. A healthy serving of greens, vegetables and vermicelli noodles are also brought to the table; these go directly into the broth.
To round out the meal, several dipping sauces are served. A piece of lard is then placed on top of the BBQ; this melts and prevents the proteins from sticking to the grill; plus it helps flavour the broth as it melts. Then it’s all up to you how long you grill the proteins. Wilt the greens and noodles and choose sauces to flavour the end result. The egg coats the outside of your chosen proteins and cooks right along with them, adding additional flavour and texture. When ready, ladle the broth into the small bowls and away you go. It’s a delicious meal that everyone can enjoy. You can choose different proteins to cook and grab more broth as required. It’s all about sharing and enjoying the activity of cooking at your table.
Chim Chum The second you will see is the Thai Hot Pot or Chim Chum; the name literally means ‘dip and drop’ in Thai. Chim means to ‘dip in’ while Chum means to ‘drop something briefly into liquid’. Chim Chum, or Jim Jum, is a popular Thai street food believed to have originated in Laos or Cambodia. It is traditionally made with chicken or pork, however seafood is very popular as well. Served with fresh herbs and cooked in broth in a small clay pot over charcoal. The clay pot is brought to the table and filled with broth. When the broth is boiling, you add the vegetables, proteins, noodles and herbs. Again, a raw egg is mixed with the protein to add texture and flavour to the meat and broth. Remove each item as they are cooked and place in your bowl. Ladle in some broth

and flavour with the dipping sauces and eat. It is a very sociable way to eat and also one of the healthiest dishes you will find here in Thailand. I find that generally the broth is more flavoursome here in Thailand compared to those I have tried elsewhere in Asia. The addition of the spicy dipping sauces allows you to make the flavour ‘your own’ and is very suitable for the whole family; it’s healthy and delicious.

11 51 How Healthy is Thai Food? With many ingredients being rich in vitamins and minerals, the nutritional aspects of Thai food
are sometimes overlooked. We asked Leigh Higgins, General Manager of Feast Thailand Food Tours, about some of the healthier Thai food options to choose from. If you choose wisely, there are health benefits from the many fresh ingredients used and also the methods in which they are cooked. There is substantial use of plants, leaves and vegetables along with many herbs and spices used to create the distinctive flavours that are quintessentially Thai. Here are my Top 8 ‘go to’ dishes when I want to eat more healthily! To clarify, these are my criteria for healthier food options in any country; foods that are not deep fried, are lower in carbs, higher in protein and generally less in fats, creams and sugars.
2. Miang Kham
This one bite morsel is a super-nutritional flavour bomb. Finely chopped raw ingredients like shallots, garlic, ginger, chilli, lime and peanuts are placed in a ChaPhlu leaf, similar to a Betel leaf, then wrapped and popped in your mouth. The explosion of flavour is intoxicating, yet the healthiness of this small package is often overlooked.
8. Som Tam
In every market around Thailand you can buy a large range of nam priks; basically dipping sauces.
Close to the national dish of Thailand, this raw dish of fresh ingredients like green papaya, tomato, carrot and snake beans is just the thing on a hot day. Alternatively, try it with other fruits like green mango or even sweetcorn to give it that extra vegetable kick.
3. Laap
1. Steamed or Grilled Fish
A laap is a warm salad of minced meat, often chicken or pork, as well as sliced onions and lots of herbs with a spicy dressing. It’s normally served with a side dish of Thai basil, cucumber, cabbage and snake beans. Living in Hua Hin, fresh seafood is the #1 dish. Nothing beats a steamed fish topped with lime and lemongrass or fish or prawns grilled using a salt crust. These are normally served with fresh herbs and lettuce, allowing you to wrap the flesh and devour them.
5 Nam Prik and Vegetables
4. Tom Yum Goong Nam Sai
Often served with coconut milk, this famous Thai dish is full of protein and packed with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir limes leaves and tomatoes. When ordered ‘nam sai’, the coconut milk is replaced with broth. It is clear and full of flavour, yet with that hit of chilli for lovers of spice.
Some are designed for dipping meats into, yet there are others, such as Nam Prik Kapi, which are designed to be eaten with fresh, raw vegetables like snake beans, wing beans or eggplant. They are great as a snack or to eat as part of a balanced Thai meal.
6. Gai or Moo Yaang
Nothing really beats marinated chicken or pork grilling over hot coals. Served with a simple dipping sauce like Nam Jim Jaew, this is low in carbs and high in protein; there is nothing better.
7 Chim Chum
This is a great way to cleanse the body. A broth bubbles away in a pot at your table. To this you add leafy greens to wilt, various proteins mixed with egg are added and once cooked, you pick out what you want.
I arrived in Thailand just over 18 months ago and to date I have lost over 15kgs. I eat Thai food 2 to 3 times a day and I drink more beer and less water than I did back in Australia. I eat more rice than ever before and I love coconut milk based dishes. I love how fried food tastes, but it’s really the amount of vegetables and herbs I eat along with salads, grilled proteins and soups. I try to eat balanced meals with lots of variety; not too much of one thing! I’m not saying this will work for you, but it has for me; so I’m sticking with it!
