EDITORIAL FOREWORD

he floods have ceded, business slowly going back to normal. Tourists returning and the monsoon moves further South. Our King warned several times and gave good advice which was not always followed up. The King designed and forwarded plans for a safe water management. Unfortunately the implementation never really took place. Rapid urbanization is one reason why the inundations are affecting the sprawling city so badly, according to experts. For now, Bangkok is relying on a complex system of dykes, canals, locks and pumping stations to keep the rising waters at bay. The flood protection efforts, however, failed to prevent an onslaught of run-off water from the north from swamping at least one-fifth of the capital. The murky floodwaters, triggered by three months of heavy monsoon rains, are edging in on Bangkok’s glitzy downtown area, threatening luxury hotels, office buildings and shopping malls. It may sound like a drastic scenario, but there is little doubt that Bangkok will have to act if it wants to avoid the fate of the fabled sunken city of Atlantis. Experts say Thai authorities must address the capital’s land use and planning challenges and consider relocating factories or industrial parks in floodprone areas. Or even moving the entire city. If no action is taken to protect the city, “in 50 years... most of Bangkok will be below sea level,” said Anond Snidvongs, a climate change expert at the capital’s Chulalongkorn University.

No forecast on Eurozone. Greece got this “take it or leave it deal”, the premier meant well but cut into his own fingers. Greece being the oldest democracy will know how to handle a referendum and electoral decision. Greece has the highest income pro capita due to the immense rich handful of Greek businessmen who, of course, keep their money, fleets, assessments, wives, islands , offshore ! Sell land to the Chinese and you will prosper. And so they did. Italians offered shares in their energy concepts to China, probably beautifully designed but hardly profitable as most of businesses there. Make no mistake , don’t misunderstand me. They do make money but pay little taxes because the companies are not “profitable”. Tax returns forms carefully completed by a staff of top salary receivers give proof. Whereas a poor German, UK, Skandi or Dutch employee driving a company car is punished for that fact by being taxed on the value of the car he is driving, in some other countries in the Southern Eurozone, way over the Alps, drive Ferraris, Porsches, Lambos, have yachts, international residences and plenty write offs. Enough of that. Did you notice how fast Hua Hin is growing? We will have another Mall, making it 4 ( The Mall, The Colonnades, Market Village and one on Soi 94) With the Venetian coming to a grinding stop and Botaneo slowly developing, we are really in the market for a proper city. Big C around tzhe corner next to Index Mall. No more sleepy village. Doesn’t this call for

an improved infrastructure? I remember a honourable Dutch citizen, Khun Dan, architect and city designer offering his help and advise, practically pro-Deo, just to help Hua Hin, just being ignored. The many calls for a pedestrian street, for example in front of the Hilton are also widely ignored. Pity. There is so much we could do to improve fast growing Hua Hin. Fix the streets, get a more logic and overseable traffic flow on PK road. Did you see Khun Obama, Sarkozy and Angela Merkel avoid Signore Berlusconi at the G20 conference? Anyway Berlo´s comments and promises were quickly qualified as “most unrealistic and unfeasible”. It was also whispered that his hair pomade and after shave were too strong. Berlo meant well when he used the vintage Old Spice we all loved so much 40 years ago. It is long overtaken by Diors, Dolces and others. Anyway Berlo is out, ordered a 25 year old Escort, a Ford Escort was delivered, Berlo pissed off.Things were clearer, less complicated 40 years ago. The truth was true. Politicians were clean and not ruled by Multies or Lobbies. Cars were not called Hybrids, making them unaffordable. Affordable : did you notice the price of eggs doubled? It jeopardizes your British breakfast. Not only eggs but many other food stuffs got very expensive and increased by sometimes 50%. Since there is no consumer organisation, Tescos and friends are free to do whatever they wish. I did notice that Pranburi Tesco is cheaper with many articles and have

promotions focussed at the population there. With Makro and eventually BigC in Hua Hin, Tesco will hopefully get some serious competition. Hua Hin is a haven for Tailors and Optricians. I hope dear visitors, you notice that. Up to 70% on eyeglasses (70% of what initial price?), 80US$ for a suit with 2 pants, two shirts and a tie. Wow. Mc´s got more expensive too. Except Mr. Pintaburger. His Burgers are still the same, same price same quality. Superb and you can choose the restaurant or bar at Soi Pintabaht where you eat your burger with a Heini or simple Leo Yai! Enough for today. Watch January issue for a rundown on “What to expect” in 2012 and great holiday tips. Yours Truly…. GMoss

The King and Jazz

His Majesty King Bhumibol and Jazz

F

or six decades, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej has inspired, entertained and encouraged the Thai people in countless ways. One of these is through music, and His Majesty’s songs, ranging from jazz to classical to patriotic anthems, have been performed not just in Thailand but internationally by some of the world’s leading musicians and orchestras. On Saturday nights, a group of some 10 professional and amateur musicians, most in their 60s and 70s, gather together at Klai Kangwol Palace by Hua Hin beach for a jazz rendezvous. These well-seasoned musicians take their time to find their seats, with instruments in hand, lips to the mouthpiece, fingers to the keys, until the band leader looks up, “Ready? …” Suddenly, as if rejuvenated by the spell of the music, the gray-haired band members come alive with youthful exuberance, adroitly creating sounds as fresh as musicians in their prime. On the saxophone is none other than 78-yearold HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

King has produced 48 outstanding pieces ranging from romance to march to ballet suites, in classic, blues, jazz, pop and alma maters. Many of them have become all-time classics including Saeng Tien (Candlelight Blues) Sai Fon (Falling Rain) and Porn Phi Mai (New Year’s Greeting), to name a few. And not only in Thailand, some fine selections of his compositions have reverberated across the globe in prestigious concert halls and informal settings alike as his songs have been included in the albums of some leading jazz musicians and prestigious international orchestras. Hua Hin to Celebrate FROM CLASSICS TO JAZZ

His Majesty’s Birthday

By Supansa

As a school boy in Switzerland, His Majesty received early training in classical music. But saxophone lessons, which later became HM the Kings most favourite instrument, occurred by chance. In the book, Chaonai Lek Lek, Yuwa Kasat, by HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Princess recalled that it was King Ananda who bought a secondhand saxophone for 300 Swiss Francs and intended to take lessons. At the last minute, he changed his mind and sent his younger brother, Prince Bhumibol to the class in his place.

H

Despite their classical music training, both King Ananda and Prince Bhumibol were more inspired by the exciting beats of blues and jazz, containing rousing rhythms and freedom of expression. The teenage royals started collecting gramophone recordings of jazz icons with King Ananda preferring Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

In Thailand, the 5th of December is the birthday of His Majesty the King and since he is considered the father for all Thai people, the day is named Thai Father´s Day and declared an official public holiday as well.

ua Hin will celebrate the King’s 84th birthday anniversary on the 5th of December at the Hua Hin Clock Tower and the Queen Sirikit’s Memorial Park. The event will be divided into 3 sessions. The first takes place early in the morning at 7 am, when food is offered to 509 Buddhist Monks at the Hua Hin Clock Tower. The second session is at 9 am which allows people and tourists to sign a book to honor His Majesty and send him well wishes. This activity coincides with Buddhist merit making for the King at the auditorium of the Klai Kangwon Royal Palace School. Eventually, King Ananda joined the class Finally, at 4.30 pm., everyone will gather with his clarinet. The one-hour, twice-weekly together at the Clock Tower and walk to the classes with Alsace musician Mr Weybrecht Queen Sirikit’s Memorial Park for a candle lit ceremony to honor His Majesty The King. were split into two half-hour classes to accommodate King Ananda on clarinet. For Since this year sees His Majesty reach 84 years two years the classes continued and often old – the 7th round of age according to Thai ended with an hour-long trio session with Mr belief, the celebration will be big and colorful Weybrecht and King Ananda on clarinet and with glittering street lights and flags decorated at many buildings around Hua Hin. Prince Bhumibol on saxophone.

Local people in Hua Hin and visitors are welcome to join in the event on the date earlier mentioned.

Recent Flood affects Hua Hin Mailing Service C

urrent flooding in Bangkok is affecting incoming and outgoing mail services to and from Hua Hin. However, in-town posting for local people is not affected as 7,000 – 8,000 parcels and letters reach recipients daily. Mr. Somsak Aksornkuan, the chief of Hua Hin post office, said that the flood crisis that was taking place in Central, Northern Thailand including Bangkok resulted in problems on mailing of letters, parcels and postal money orders to and from Hua Hin. However, thanks to hard-working mailing staff at all post offices in Hua Hin, incoming mails to and outgoing mails from the city still reach local people quickly as usual. The chief of Hua Hin post office apologized to people who had to wait in the line for long time. This is because there are many letters and parcels yet to be sent out to other areas of Thailand and outside the country. So, all senders are informed to keep mailing slips for partial refund in case their mail is lost or damaged. At present, the flooding situation in Bangkok becomes better as water level is receding. So, mailing service in Hua Hin and Thailand are coming back to normal. The chief of the Hua Hin post office asked people who would like to send gifts and greeting cards for Christmas and New Year’s to do so early because overloaded mail usually occurs in December .

Student Group for Music and Art to be Launched at Nong Phlab Witthaya

By Chamnan

T

he Nong Phlab Witthaya School is now forming a big student group for music, performing arts and marching band to promote skills among its students and celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday anniversary on 5 December. All musical and performing instruments are donated by the Boonrawd Brewery Public Company Limited and the Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Athikhun Butying. According to the school director Mr. Jongrak Chantarawong, apart from improving teaching and learning curricular for 500 students and 18 teachers, he emphasizes the importance of extra-curricular activities, particularly music and performing arts. Consequently, the students are allowed to learn Thai or international music and Thai folk dance of the North, the North East, the Central and the South of Thailand. Everyday, music instructors from the Thanarat Military Base come to the school to train students on music and dance. The instructors also work closely with the teachers at the school. When an event in the school’s neighborhood calls for an entertainment show, the school will send the trained students to show their skill. This will

be an invaluable experience for the students as they can hone their music and performance skills in real life. Music that the school usually teaches to the students includes the songs composed by His Majesty The King and the songs for traditional Thai festive occasions like Loy Krathong, Thai New Year’s or Songkran. The students are also taught to play classic Thai and English songs. In terms of traditional Thai performance on stage, focus is on ‘Pong Lang’ – a woodwind musical instrument of the northeast of the country. This performance is taught to the students by qualified trainers. The reason why the Nong Phlab Witthaya School pays so much attention to traditional Thai music and performance is because foreign music is so overwhelming that Thai music is near extinction. This also results in the loss of Thainess among recent teenagers. Now, the school is asking its alumni and recent

So, we need to organize curricular that well suits the need of the learners,” added Mr. Jongrak. Oktoberfest at The Hilton – Munich in Hua Hin

K

lein aber Fein is the best way to describe the Oktoberfest at the Hilton Biergarten. Running from November 9 until 11th, the Biergarten was set up as you would find it in Germany, in the heart of Bavaria. They could not have done better. The Humpahumpa Bavarian Band originally and traditionally performing at the Hofbräuhaus in Munich did not only put up a performance but was very entertaining with many games for the guests. Ois Zwoi Zuffa! sounded frequently as guest were summoned to raise their mugs and perform a bottoms up ! In contrary to news headlines , beer now available in drops, here , beer flowed in every mug again and again, in Maß.

In order to feed the weary and hungry bodies, Chef Schlincky set up a gallery of typical Bavarian delicacies, simple but tasteful. It was all “on the wall” - Schlinckys Schweinereien. From Nürnberger Wurstchen, Weiswurst, Rote und verlängerten Nürnbergen, Schlinckyboy did not forget the Schwein am Spiess, a piglet which was BBQ´d before our hungry eyes. Mashed Potatoes and Sauerkraut to go with it all. A selection of home made mustards on the side. Lovely waitresses dressed in “Dirndl”, an original dress from Bavaria served the masses. All in all, a great job done by Tane “ The Man” Picken and his Team headed by Sam The Swiss, Schinky The Kraut and Team members. Great PR job by Khun Aor and team as well. Can we have a November- and Dezemberfest as well ? Ein Prosit, ein Prohosit zur Gemütlichkeit!

angkok Hospital Hua Hin (BHN) opened in November 2011. Both the Thai and International communities have embraced the hospital and the everincreasing number of patients who visit our Emergency room and out-patient clinics witness the appreciation of the Hua Hin community. Dr Somarch. the Medical Director, has recruited a team of personable, well-trained doctors to work at the hospital. Almost all of them have worked in the flagship hospital in Bangkok before coming to Hua Hin. This close association with the Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok is an important part of our structure and we like to say that we are a new hospital with forty years of experience. The first to join us was Dr Thawatchai. After initial medical school training in Thailand he continued his surgical training in the USA. He did full residency training in Detroit, Michigan and became certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Abdominal Surgery. He settled in Florida where he practiced surgery for thirty years in hospitals in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. He performed a very wide range of surgery and is an ideal person to head our surgical department because of the wide scope of his surgical abilities. His main interest is in surgery in the abdomen: Removing the appendix, gall bladder, repairing hernias and treating cancers of the breast and colon are his areas of greatest expertise. He has an easy-going manner and is perfectly fluent in English. Our second returning expert is Dr Kitti Loychusuk who arrived to head the Women’s Health Department. He is a graduate of Mahidol University and trained as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in New York State. He practiced there for 40 years and was a Professor at the Stoneybrook. University Medical Center and is a Board certified specialist in the USA. He took extra training in minimally invasive surgery using laparoscopes and hysteroscopes. Dr Kitti has returned to his homeland and is determined to bring the expertise that he acquired in America to our new hospital in Hua Hin. Dr Kitti is a relaxed easy to talk to person and is, of course, totally fluent in English. The Women’s Health Center will provide both preventative and active care. Dr Kitti

says that he is pleased that so much technical excellence will be available at the hospital and that minimally invasive surgery; Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy will be available. From adolescence to menopause, Women’s medical needs will be taken care of at BHN. Both Dr. Thawatccai and Dr Kitti are very experienced in performing minimally invasive surgery using the Laparoscope. We have performed operations, including removing the Gall Bladder, through the ‘scope. This enables the patient to leave hospital within one or two days after surgery. Our latest addition is Dr Varachati Soonjinda. A superbly trained and experienced Children’s doctor. After graduating in Medicine from Mahidol he served his internship in Thailand. He then went to New York and trained in Pediatrics at the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine and its associated hospital in the Bronx. He trained for eight years in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology and Neonatal Intensive care. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein Medical Center. He practiced for forty years in New York and Florida in hospital and private practice. In 2005 he returned to Thailand and worked in Phuket for three years before returning to work for the Indian Health Service in the USA caring for children in the Aboriginal communities. We are very fortunate that Dr Varachati has joined the staff of our Children’s care department. His wide range of experience means that he can care for children from their moment of birth, through their childhood and into adolescence. His skills with the care of premature babies is very welcome as it strengthen our Maternity services. These three doctors with their international training, their fluency in English and years of experience are a welcome addition to our staff. They will complement our enthusiastic younger doctors bringing great maturity to our staff. Starting December 2011, the BH is providing another new service. A very experienced gastro-enterologist from Bangkok is visiting weekly and performing Colonoscopies for the detection of bowel cancer. By Dr. Michael Moreton

Terra Selisa – Upcoming Beach experience at Dolphin Bay

By GMoss olphin Bay is located approximately 38 km from Hua Hin, an easy 30 minute drive South following the signs for Prachuap Khiri Khan.Approximately 20km from Hua Hin drive straight ahead through the first set of traffic lights in front of the Thanarat Army Camp, continue on past the Esso, Shell and Caltex service stations on your left and then turn left at the second set of traffic lights in front of the Tesco Lotus Superstore. From here follow the signs to Sam Roi Yot Park. Before reaching the Park entrance, a road off to the left, in front of the Wat (temple) will take you to Dolphin Bay. Once you reach the bay, to your left, on the corner is the Terra Selisa Resort. Terra Selisa means “Earth in Balance”. I found a friendly fresh looking Resort practically on the beach facing the Dolphin bay where at certain times a day one can see the Dolphins pass through from their feeding grounds to their night quarters. The resort consists of a series of fully serviced , air-conditioned bungalows, with a mini bar , satellite TV and a free WiFi system to keep you connected to the outer world.

Worthwhile mentioning is the Laudations on the Elephant Polo with a commented wish to market this event better next year and offer a wider variety of Hotel and Restaurant alternatives with a kid´s corner . It´s all about putting Hua Hin on the Map. On behalf of unmentioned organizers , HHT announced plans to hold an International Rhythm – Blues – Rock & Pop Festival next year. Bank of Thailand trying

to ease flood victims’ problems T

he Bank of Thailand is trying to help victims of the recent floods by delaying the planned implementation of the loan value ratio rule on low rise residential purchases by one year. The rule applies to low rise houses valued at less than THB10 million (US$3.2 million). The rule limits mortgage loans at 95 per cent of home value. The Bank of Thailand is also helping borrowers obtain loans for house repairs needed to fix flood damage by dropping the risk weight of mortgage loans for low rise residential houses to 35 per cent of the loan value until the end of the year according to The Nation.Close to 40 per cent of 2.4 million houses in Bangkok and 40 per cent of 4 million houses in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan and Samut Songkhram have been affected by floods.

Thai floods create demand

for short-term rentals in Hua Hin S

ansiri’s property management unit Plus Property Co Ltd has been approached by over 150 Thai clients in late October when the floods approached the capital, applying for short rental contracts in the resort city of Hua Hin.The units that have been shown most interest are those for a stay of under 3 months, with unit rental pricing between US$814-1800. The spiked interest in Hua Hin and other resort destination comes after residents of Bangkok realise the necessity of a second home for refuge. Real estate experts predict that there will be future interest for more projects with systematic management and permission for pets. Meanwhile, budget and economy hotels in Hua Hin and Pattaya are fully booked while serviced apartments in Bangkok have higher take up rates, particularly those with parking above basement level.

Singapore’s government

planning for population boom

T

he population boom in Singapore will not affect the quality of housing available to its citizens according to Deputy Prime Minister Tao Chee Hean.“Even as our city becomes more populated, we can still, with good design and planning, build facilities for our residents. We opened Punggol Waterway just a month ago and built a park around Punggol to illustrate that we can still find the space for good-quality housing for Singaporeans” he said.

The MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC was at the opening of the 1.2km Punggol Point walk. Located next to the Punggol jetty the walk features a viewing area, children’s playground, an events plaza and two lily ponds. A 2.5 km nature walk is expected to be completed next year in Punggol. The parks and walk areas are being built to help

residents escape the population boom and urbanisation in Singapore. Future residents of Punggol are excited about the changes happening in the area. “(The area) has a very nice view, compared to 10 years ago, when it was just a beach” said Anthony Tan who is moving to Punggol in February.

TAT plans to promote domestic tourism

15

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has designed a five-pronged strategy to rebuild domestic tourism after the severe flooding

T

hawatchai Arunyik, deputy governor for domestic marketing, said the first measure, intra-regional travel, is set to start this week and run until the end of January. People will be encouraged to visit nearby attractions rather than go across regions. That would continue to augment business in communities. The authority will not focus on already crowded destinations such as Hua Hin ,Pattaya and Kanchanaburi. Four plans are set for next year, as the flooding will have completely disappeared by then. It will begin with cross-region travel by encouraging people from all parts of the country to visit the Central region and Bangkok. “TAT also will invite 10 travel agents from each province or more than 700 agents in January to see attractions in the Central region so they can develop packages afterward,” he said. TAT later will boost niche markets like medical and corporate in unaffected regions, particularly the Northeast. The plan is expected to start in January. Health and healing will also get attention in the coming year in order to assist people to release

stress and ease their pains. Expat associations in major cities, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Samui ,Pattaya and Phuket would be asked to help promote domestic tourism as well as to communicate with their people overseas about the tourism situation in Thailand after the flood. “We call this project ‘Local to Global’. We’ll ask Scandinavians in Hua Hin, Japanese in Chiang Mai, Germans in the Northeast and Europeans in Pattaya to help invite tourists to Thailand after the flooding,” he said. TAT plans to spend Bt70 million on the strategy. All 35 TAT offices nationwide are involved in the preparations. Chumpol Silpa-archa, a deputy prime minister and the tourism minister, ordered organisations to prepare special relief campaigns and implement them immediately after the flood crisis dissipates. TAT predicts that the flooding would cause domestic travel to drop by 2 per cent or 1.8 million trips from the forecast 91 million trips this year. However, TAT has not yet revised the projection as it is waiting for the situation to settle down first.

Locals fleeing to Hua Hin as expats rush to Pattaya

Courtesy by www.nationmultimedia.com

Hua Hin and nearby Cha-am are the destinations of choice for Thais fleeing the floods, while expatriates are heading for Pattaya, Knight Frank Thailand has found

B

udget hotels in those resort cities are fully occupied, as are serviced apartments in Bangkok, especially in the Sukhumvit area. Risinee Sarikaputra, associate director of research and valuation for the real-estate consultancy, noted that the word “evacuation” has become popular in the media. And as the floods seep into the capital, the buzzword now is being applied to Bangkokians. Many Bangkokians have second homes in Hua Hin, more so than in Pattaya. Nowadays, infrastructure is relatively well developed in Hua Hin, and the city boasts supermarkets and restaurants with a range of international foods, international schools, universities and international hospitals, she said. While budget and economy hotels are brimming in both Hua Hin and Pattaya, the occupancy rate of luxury hotels is quite stable, although bookings by international visitors have been cancelled because of the flooding. These upscale hotels can boost their occupancy rate by accommodating Bangkokians, but their revenue is still diminished as locals’ spending power is less than foreigners’.

Another factor is that better-off Thais who own second homes in resort destinations are not likely to stay in hotels. So the hotels showing high occupancy rates during the flood crisis are the lower-priced ones, with average rates of Bt1,500-Bt2,500 per night. Meanwhile in Bangkok, the occupancy rate of serviced apartments has increased recently, especially those with upper-level parking such as Chatrium Suites. Bookings cancelled by international visitors avoiding the floods have been compensated for by locals, though the rental rates have decreased slightly. Many serviced apartments report that their units are fully occupied, especially those in the Sukhumvit area such as Grand President. A few expatriates have decided to go back to their own countries, while others have stayed in Thailand but moved out of the capital to such places as Pattaya. Many companies have rented hotels near their offices for expatriate staff, while the occupancy of hotels near Suvarnabhumi Airport is quite high. Under these circumstances, some sectors of the accommodation business are performing well thanks to demand by locals.

L

isted property developer Sena Development (SENA) plans to launch a residential project in Pattaya next year, according to the Bangkok Post. The company will ask shareholders on December 27 to approve purchase of a 100 rai piece of land in Pattaya Country Club with an appraised value of almost THB2 billion (US$64.9 million). The decision comes after widespread floods are

believed to increase demand for second homes in resort destinations such as Hua Hin and Pattaya and the company sees opportunities in the golf home segment of the market. The first phase of the project will comprise of 10.2 units. The project is the company’s first development in the provinces and it plans to alter the design of the buildings so that they will be raised from the ground

his unique program presents an exceptional variety of modern and modernist styles coming together in stunning unity. The first piece, “Le Cri” (the scream) is based on Edward Munch’s famous painting. This new choreography is a disturbing duet where each dancer in turn touches, gropes and feels the other. The created intimacy, undesired, initiates bothering results. The second piece is the classical piece “Faun” by Demetrius Klein, the noted American choreographer sees here its asian premiere: a tale of love lost and longing, it recreates the Nijinsky masterpiece in a modern style. The last piece, “Morphoses” by UBDC resident choreographer Philippe Saint-Paul starts from the same premise as “Entremains” but takes us in a very different world where space, time and dreams collide. We are taken back to the time in Paris where all artists from different generations, origins, dreams met and confronted their ideas in a unequalled dynamic: at the beginning of the 20th century in Paris, we see Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Rodin, Isadora Duncan, Fokine, Nijinsky, Stravinsky create a new world where nothing will ever be the same. A varied presentation, 1 hour 30 minutes long with 2 short transitions, it shows the richness of French choreography of today and its heritage from the 20th century. Tickets for 900, 700 and 500 Baht (students 50 % discount) are now available at Vic Hua

The Ultimate Residence Conveniences at GreenScape

H

ua Hin , being a top holiday destination is slowly also establishing as a top residence for second homes and retirements from Europe. The reason being is that Thailand offers the security and tranquility these homesteaders seek. Not only are real estate prices in Thailand very reasonable, the building quality is good and walled compounds offer 24 hours of security. One of these developments is GreenScape and Black Lotus. Located just about 4 km. towards the West of Hua Hin, a stone throw away from the Floating markets, a tourist attraction, on Soi 112, connecting the main road in Hua Hin to the By-pass Highway making it very convenient to the South or Bangkok. In order to make a compound attractive,

developers usually ad a few amenities such as clubhouse, sport and exercise courts and a food facility. GreenScape has done a surprisingly excellent job, hardly seen in Thailand in a residential compound. The Entrance as you approach the compound is clearly visible, can´t miss it and you practically drive straight to the Clubhouse. As you enter the Club facility, the Bar and Restaurant is right in front of you. Smartly furnished with white modern furniture. On the terrace, rattan furniture invites the guests for a sit-out. To the right, the half Olympic swimming pool is surrounded by sun chairs, facing the pool and ponds in front. A fitness room and Spa facility is still under

construction but should be finished within a few weeks. Planned is also a tennis court and further recreational facilities. The Banyan Golf Club is practically around the corner slightly sloped in the hills. From GreenScape and Banyan, stunning views of the Sun setting in the west

RICD Wheelchair Project asks for used wheelchairs

T

he RICD Wheelchair Project is a project of the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development (RICD) in Chiang Mai. The project started in March 2000 by Christian missionaries who wanted to help fellow-men who were less advantaged. The project has been ongoing since that time and is currently executed by Buddhist as well as Christian volunteers from Thailand and other countries. It is a joint venture between a government and non-government organizations. The RICD Wheelchair Project management is under supervision of the director of the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development (RICD). Volunteer /manager is a man who is himself using a wheelchair. The volunteers have many different passports: from USA, Australia, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Iran, Irak, Norway, Kenya and, of course, Thailand. All volunteers work for free in the project. The RICD Wheelchair Project provides mobility aid and other medical equipment free of charge to the people with disability who are too poor to buy mobility aid by themselves. As a consequence the project hopes to improve the value of the life of the disabled. Thus far wheelchairs have been donated by countries like United States, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands and Japan. Most of the wheelchairs have been used already but are still in very good condition. The second hand wheelchairs have been used e.g. by disabled children who grow out of their wheelchair and received a new wheelchair from their government under the condition that they return the ‘old’ wheelchair. Collecting wheelchairs from countries worldwide as well as the container shipments of these wheelchairs is a major task of the RICD wheelchair Project. The containers are imported duty-free in Thailand and transported from the harbor to the RICD- warehouse in Chiang Mai, where all inventory is administered. After administration

and a thorough check, the mobility aid is transported to all directions in Thailand. These transports are executed for free by trucks of the Thai ‘Tiger’ company. Applications for wheelchairs from all over Thailand are received via local hospitals. The patient who is allocated a wheelchair has been selected by his/her local health authorities on the basis of disability (and poorness). To receive mobility aid, certain procedures have to be followed. When a patient meets all the criteria, he/she will be invited to one of the distribution venues in order to receive a wheelchair or other mobility aid for free. Another possibility is that an individual fitting will be executed at the local hospital or at the patient’s home (i.e. Community Based Rehabilitation). Wheelchairs and other equipment are distributed out of hospitals and health centers all over Thailand. Other equipment includes crutches, cushions, walkers, bath-chairs, toiletchairs, rollators, canes, etc. During the distributions the equipment such as wheelchairs are adapted to the size and special needs of the disabled person by a professional wheelchair technician team in cooperation with medical staff. If a disabled patient is not able to come to a distribution venue, the RICD Wheelchair Team will visit him/her at home in order to fit the disabled patient in the wheelchair. In this regard it is important to emphasize that people with disability have to be integrated and should have the right to lead a decent life in their own community. For this reason the RICD Volunteers make an assessment of the home situation of the people with disability as follows: 1. In case there is a person in a wheelchair, a judgment will be made whether the home is accessible for a wheelchair. If not, suggestions for improvements will be made and assistance will be given for implementation of these suggestions to adapt the accessibility of the house according to the special needs of the person with disability (entrance of the home, toilet, etc)

2. In case the person with disability is in need for equipment, attempts will be made to supply the necessary equipment (mattress, wheelchair, hand grip, sitting devices, standing tables, etc). 3. One of the main goals of home visits is raising awareness towards the other family members and members of the local community (head of the village and neighbors) that people with disability also have rights. For this reason the abilities of a person with disability will be emphasized and never the disabilities. 4. In case of emergency, transport will be organized to bring people with disability to the local hospital to get proper treatment. To date, the RICD Wheelchair Project has received 35 container shipments of medical equipment, totaling over 4,500 wheelchairs along with many other types of home mobility aid equipment. All has been given to the people of Thailand in coordination with the Department of Mental Health of the Ministry of Public Health, via local hospitals, public health centers and other organizations. Another limitation for the RICD Wheelchair Project is the lack of funding. The Project is constantly looking for additional money in order to pay for the transport of seacontainers to Laem Chabang harbor. The more containers with mobility aid the project will receive, the more people with disability the volunteers can help. Donations are most welcome in the bank account of RICD Wheelchair Project no. 547-0-16147-1 with Krung Thai Bank, Kuang Sing branch in Chiang Mai. The RICD Wheelchair Project Team in Chiang Mai already has a close cooperation with Hua Hin Hospital. This means that patients who are too poor to buy mobility aid by themselves, can apply via the Social Work department or the Physical Therapy department of Hua Hin Hospital.

can be enjoyed every evening. The view goes across the plain to the hills separating Hua Hin and Burma. According to the management, a membership for the Club facilities will be made available for residents of surrounding compounds. Summa sumarum, a win win situation for Hua hin.

P

roperty firms are aiming to boost their end of year sales by launching projects in locations that were not affected by the floods in Bangkok, such as Pattaya, Hua Hin, Sukhumvit and Bang Na. LPN Development managing director Opas Sripayak said that the demand to buy residences at locations that did not face flooding will see strong growth. LPN Development is opening presales of Lumpini Park Beach Jomtien, worth THB4 billion (US$127 million), at THB1.49 million (US$47,650). Lumpini Riverside Rama 3 is averaging sales of 50 to 100 units a week. The recent resurgence of interest in residences in dry areas has seen LPN Development record pre-sales of THB12 billion (US$383 million)

during the first 10 months of 2011. LPN Development is not the only company doing this; Pruksa Real Estate is launching 3 residential projects in Chaeng Wattana Road, Khon Kaen province and Phuket. Raimon Land is launching its latest condominium project south of Pattaya. Raimon Land’s chief executive, Hubert Viriot, said that none of the company’s residential projects were flooded, which would drive sales growth. The company recorded pre-sales of THB3.43 billion (US$109 million) in the first nine months of this year. Real Estate Information Centre (REIC) said the floods have caused the property market to drop between 10 and 20 per cent this year.

Volvo China Open Champion Nicolas Colsaerts warms up at the award winning Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin prior to the World Cup at Mission Hills

H

ua Hin, Thailand. European Tour Golf Professional from Belgium Nicolas Colsaerts ranked 17 on the Race to Dubai money list got geared up last week at the Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin with Jerome Theunis working on his team match play plans in advance of the World Cup at Mission Hills, Hainan Island, China at the end of the month. His appearance was warmly welcomed by club members and guests of Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin as he also participated in the monthly golf and wine dinner event on Saturday, 19th November 2011. Prior to the 5-course wine dinner at The Terrace restaurant, Nicolas, Jerome, together with his coach Michel Van Meerbeck and caddie Brian Nilsson held a one hour clinic for local juniors at the driving range. Everyone was overwhelmed by the level of enthusiasm and excitement the juniors have for the game of golf and that those present enjoyed the golfing instruction that they received.

The golf competition was a stable ford competition for amateurs over 18-holes followed by prize giving at the golf club’s Terrace Restaurant and Wine Cellar

18 Holes of fun filled Mini Golf with good Food & Drinks

Jan and Mem are the hosts at Hua Hin Crazy Golf where kids and adults alike can test their putting skills on an 18 hole course with all sorts of handicaps. All little Tiger Woods and Michell Wies started their careers at Mini Golf courses. At Hua Hin Crazy Golf there is also a Petange court . Do French call it Jeux de Boules? There is a great playground with a 5 meter slide, a climbing sala with a jungle bridge connected to a second sala. Great

fun for kids. The Mini Golf Resort has a comprehensive menue from Sandwiches to T-bone steaks, Thai and Western Food. Soft drinks, beer and Icecream. How to get there? Follow the road along Kao Takiab village and divert to the right at the wider part, over the small bridge along the Wat. Just about 500 meters up the road take a right turn towards the railroad tracks and Petschkasem Road to Pranburi. After 100 meters you will find the Crazy Golf on your left. Can’t miss it. Hua Hin Prepares for Winter Sports

The Winter Sports Festival is soon taking place in Hua Hin, highlights in 9 types of international and traditional Thai games.

T

he highlight of the 5-course dinner was the Seared Angus beef tenderloin with colcannon potato, shitake mushrooms and green asparagus served with a glass of Concha Y Toro Trio Reserva Merlot Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile courtesy of IWS. During the prize giving dinner Nicolas Colsaerts was interviewed by golf club general Manager, Stacey Walton. Nicolas was asked several questions such as his favorite holes and spoke well about the back 9 and particularly 15 to 18 as the most memorable. Nicolas also mentioned how he played a driver and 3 wood to the back of the green on the long par 5, hole 12 to make birdie. During the interview, Nicolas touched on the equipment he uses in his golf bag and mentioned that he likes to use a selection of clubs & brands that best suit him as he hasn’t got an exclusive sponsorship to use any particular clubs. So, it’s all down to technique and we all know well that Nicolas is very capable of hitting over 300-yards from the tee. Nicolas mentioned several memorable achievements at both amateur and professional level and was humble to mention how much he enjoys meeting so many interesting people on tour and that golf has provided him with the opportunity to see so many places and have different experiences but life is tough as a touring golf professional. The dinner ended with the prize giving announcing the results of this month’s golf and wine dinner with the winner - Ms. Berit Ziegler achieving 32 stable ford points with handicap of 27. Nearest Pin’s were won by her husband Mr. Ingermar Ziegler and the longest drive on hole 9 by Gary Zinn. Monthly events at Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin have enjoyed much support over the years and they’ve a bumper of social golf and dinners scheduled in December. Stacey Walton comments that there is an event for everyone over the festive season; we’ve got lined up a series of social events from a golf day with BBQ dinner on 10th, our signature wine dinner on 17th, Christmas Champagne Dinner on 24th, Christmas lunch on 25th and New Year’s Party and Gala with live band on 31st. The interview with the Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Athikhun Butying, this event, organized jointly by the Hua Hin Municipality as well as the Boonrawd Brewery Public Company and is aimed to revive and preserve traditional Thai sports once famous among local people as well as to honor His Majesty the King. It´s name comes from December when Hua Hin enjoys a bit cooler weather. Highlights of the Winter Sports Festival are 9 sport disciplines, some of famous and widely practiced among local people in Hua Hin long time ago; Thai chess, Thai boxing, Cooing contest of red-whiskered Bulbuls and Thai Folk Song singing contest. Besides these, internationally known sports like Basketball, Futsal, Petanque, Badminton and Sepak-Takraw are also included in the event. Taking place at the Phon Kingphet Memorial Park, the Winter Sports Festival will begin from November to December. Programs will be changed and updated as each sport is rotated. This event is organized to promote some near-extinction sports of Thailand so that the younger generation realizes their existence. It also promotes international sports as Hua Hin is the city of famous Thai sportsmen, particularly Phon Kingphet, the international boxing champion, and Hern Harn Krailas

Silathong, the 2nd contender for Thai boxing. Since the Winter Sports Festival is taking place during the high season of Hua Hin, it is expected that a lot of tourists will come to the city and attend the events. Spa Reviews

Marriott’s Mandara Spa Review

or the past 26 years, the Marriott Resort and Spa has offered the Hua Hin hotel community an opportunity to experience quality and traditional tourism. A major contribution to the resort’s image came 11 years ago when the Mandara Spa opened, offering the first and only all outdoor spa experience in Hua Hin. The Marriott Resort and Mandara Spa, 107/1 Phetkasem Rd., are set in a lush exotic wonderland where the air is heavy with blooming flowers and wisps of incense. From every point on the resort grounds, the sound of running water can be heard, peacefully eroding all sources of tension and the rustic décor of rough wood, rich oranges and stone walkways keep you grounded with a sense of familiarity.

Much like the entire resort ground, the Mandara Spa is wild with tropical plants and flowers. From the moment you cross the small wooden bridge to the spa arena, it is clear, the Mandara Spa is in a class of its own. The mineral spa is like a garden, as it is cleverly woven into a jungle labyrinth of hidden rooms, trickling springs and private

relaxation coves. Mandara Spa Manager Charin Sangsuwan said the Mandara Spa is the only spa in Hua Hin to offer a completely natural setting where all the rooms are private, yet completely exposed and in touch with the surrounding nature. “We want guests to feel close to nature,” Sangsuwan said. “Mandara means journey to find the fountain of youth. We try to capture that feeling in our spa.” He said the five treatment rooms are designed with high ceilings to effectively shield spa guests from the intense Thai sun, while still allowing them to enjoy the benefits of fresh air. The Mandara Spa offers a variety of traditional and unique treatments including body scrubs and wraps, facials, lap pool and footbath services, Thai and Balinese massages, aromatherapy treatments and waxing. Sangsuwan said the Mandara spa’s most popular treatments are their aromatherapy massages. “We developed this treatments very carefully by our specialist who is certified in England. Also people like our Balinese massage. We were the first to bring this type of massage to Thailand,” Sangsuwan said. Sangsuwan said the aromatherapy massages help to get ride of stress as it focuses on specific areas of the body for each client. “We don’t use a standardized script, we make each treatment specific for guests,”Sangsuwan said. During my visit to the Mandara Spa, I was treated to the January spa special called the Herbology Treatment, which included a 30 minute soak and then a 90 minute Thai massage with hot herbal compress. The spa treatment room was like a secret garden paradise with plenty of warming sunshine and a beautifully arranged garden. I felt both in touch with nature and completely comfortable in the privacy of the concealing trees and shrubbery. My treatment began with a soothing foot soak of warm milk, honey and flower pedals, followed by a relaxing sea salt foot scrub. After a nice foot massage, I was instructed to soak in the large sunlit stone basin located in the garden terrace of the treatment room. Flower bushes surrounded the bath and butterflies flittered past as I lounged under a huge cloth umbrella in complete

T

he Imperial Beach Resort is located directly on the coast a little North of His Majesty´s Hua Hin Palace. These fine properties are located at Thailand’s major tourist destinations with the ultimate in world-class service and facilities, combined with the group’s traditional reputation for genuine Thai hospitality. Imperial Hotels and Resorts Thailand also proudly manages prestigious affiliated hotel properties throughout Thailand under the Eurasia brand. The Imperial Hua Hin Beach Resort preserves the Hua Hin resort atmosphere with 124 guestrooms, all beautifully decorated and equipped with modern facilities to ensure utmost comfort and convenience. The magnificent swimming pool and a restaurant facing on to the beach offer an excellent variety of dining and other entertainment options. The Hua Hin resort and spa offers a haven of beachfront tranquility and relaxation. The beach front Spa is a pleasant surprise. First of all, the reception is very friendly, professional and in depth about treatment application. My altering skin was examined whilst enjoying a refreshing cup of herbal tea. A Thai Herbal scrub recommended. The scrubs were presented on a tray to choose from. I went for the recommendation. After the scrub, a “truth” oil body massage was planned top freshen the skin. All to make me feel a bit younger again. The treatment room was on the beach side and the bathroom pool / tub facing the sea. The only

33

thing separating me from the gulf was a glass window. How romantic can it get? The treatment room was large and fitted two massage beds for couples. Smartly designed. Khun Oh was my therapist. Experienced and professional, she applied the body scrub with care and passion. Hard to stay awake with such treatments. The following body massage with special “truth” oil relaxed me further but waiting duties woke me up. Back to the office, deadlines waiting! After an invigorating treatment such as a body massage, you don´t feel like walking. Taking a look at the resort, I eyed this stretcher along the swimming pool and imagined myself swimming slowly to the pool bar and sipping a GT. The resort is equipped with all the amenities you would expect in a tourist hotel including a kiddies play ground, friendly staff and a dynamic GM. Matthew has been in Thailand for many years and has managed several Imperial group (Chang Beer) hotels. Recommendable Spa? Yes definitely. Good quality and reasonable prices. Where? : After the King´s Palace, heading out of town, at the traffic light, turn right and follow the road to the coast. Keep left. The Imperial Resort is on the right hand side. Plenty of parking spaces. For more info, just call : 032 520 162-6 Email : reservation@imperialhuahin.com Web: www.imperialhotels.com

relaxation. The bath was made with cleansing in mind as it combined lemongrass oil, sea salt and other herbal oils to activate antibacterial practices and naturally release tension. My whole body tingled with a hot sensation as the antiseptic lemongrass oil seeped into my pores. “The soak stimulates circulation and puts more oxygen into the skin. It draws out tension and reduces inflammatory muscle tissue,” Sangsuwan said. After a shower and a thorough application of the Mandara spa beauty products, I climbed onto the traditional massage table, unsure of what to expect. To my delight, the masseuse was especially skilled in even application of the hot herbal compresses. She fluidly moved from one sore body part to the next, pressing, dabbing and massaging the hot compress on my muscles. The massage consisted of four cycles, three applications of the herbal compress with different scents and increasing in heat, then the final round of a subtle Thai massage. I expected 90 minutes of rough, neck straining Thai stretching, but was instead only massaged and briefly stretched in a completely relaxing manner. It the most complete and uniquely effective Thai massage I have ever experienced. Each Mandara spa works with a treatment development center to best accommodate the specific clients each spa attracts, who Sangsuwan said are an even mix of local customers and visiting guests. “Our customers are fifty, fifty for Thai and foreigners. We have more women than men because we don’t do a rough sport massage,” Sangsuwan said.He said that one of the major appeals for

customers is their familiarity with their product line, which can be purchased at the spa counter. “We use a combine of local products and our own international brand from England, we use the Elemis anti aging system,” Sangsuwan said. The 90 minutes massage melted away all tension and when the masseuse said, “Ok, Miss, I am finished,” I was devastated the treatment was over. The hot herbal compress was like a drug and I wanted more. As I reluctantly left the Marriott Resort and Spa grounds, my skin tingled with relief and complete relaxation. Sangsuwan said the Mandara spa has a specific type of clientele it caters to and they focus on this level of quality and service. “We want people to come here and have a good time to relax,” Sangsuwan said.

Summerhill Education An educational Philosophy

lexander Sutherland Neill (17 October 1883 - 23 September 1973) was a Scottish progressive educator, author and founder of Summerhill school, which remains open and continues to follow his educational philosophy to this day. He is best known as an advocate of personal freedom for children.

Educational philosophy

Neill believed that the happiness of the child should be the paramount consideration in decisions about the child’s upbringing, and that this happiness grew from a sense of personal freedom. He felt that deprivation of this sense of freedom during childhood, and the consequent unhappiness experienced by the repressed child, was responsible for many of the psychological disorders of adulthood. Neill’s ideas, which tried to help children achieve self-determination and encouraged critical thinking rather than blind obedience, were seen as backward, radical, or at best, controversial. Many of Neill’s ideas are widely accepted today, although there are still many more “traditional” thinkers within the educational establishment who regard Neill’s ideas as threatening the existing social order, and are therefore controversial. In 1921 Neill founded Summerhill School to demonstrate his educational theories in practice. These included a belief that children learn better when they are not compelled to attend lessons. The school is also managed democratically, with regular meetings to determine school rules. Pupils have equal voting rights with school staff. Neill’s Summerhill School experience demonstrated that, free from the coercion of traditional schools, students tended to respond by developing self-motivation, rather than selfindulgence. Externally imposed discipline, Neill felt, prevented internal, self-discipline from developing. He therefore considered that children who attended Summerhill were likely to emerge with better-developed critical thinking skills and greater self-discipline than children educated in compulsion-based schools. These tendencies were perhaps all the more remarkable considering that the children accepted by Summerhill were often from problematic backgrounds, where parental conflict or neglect had resulted in children arriving in a particularly unhappy state of mind. The therapeutic value of Summerhill’s environment was demonstrated by the improvement of many children who had been rejected by conventional schools, yet flourished at Summerhill. Strongly influenced by the contemporary work of Sigmund Freud and Wilhelm Reich, Neill was opposed to sexual repression and the imposition of the strict Victorian values of his childhood era. He stated clearly that to be anti-sex was to be anti-life. Naturally, these views made him unpopular with many establishment figures of the time. Many within the educational establishment felt threatened by Neill’s work, and criticism of Neill was correspondingly harsh. Many published ad hominem attacks accusing Neill of various failings including naivety and unrealistic idealism, or even downright moral indifference. Neill was similarly criticized for bringing notions of Freudian repression into an educational setting

Summerhill School, which Neill founded, was in 2007 accepted by OFSTED as providing a good quality of academic education for children. Summerhill has also been recognized by the United Nations for its exceptionally good treatment of children. “The convention of the Rights of the Child makes particular reference to children’s rights to participate in decisions affecting them and Summerhill, through its very approach to education, embodies this right in a way that surpasses expectation.” - Paulo David, Secretary, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Halio of Hua Hin applies a lot of Summerhill´s philosophy. Please read below the comments of founder and MD of Halio School Hua Hin, Khun Padma. Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow

by Padma Fischer – White, founder of Halio HuaHin hen we moved to Hua Hin seven years ago, I felt confident that there would be an international school for my son by the time he was old enough to attend. My parents told me not to sacrifice my son’s education for my lifestyle. The local schools teach English, but my son needed to study in English. What could we do? We loved Hua Hin and wanted to stay. I got together with four other families and we created a little homeschool at my house. As we created the school, we had to ask: What is it that our kids really need to learn? What education will prepare them the best for success in the 21st century? What is the purpose of sending children to school? We did a lot of research and found that leading thinkers in the field agree that the rapidly changing, highly technological, unpredictable work atmosphere of the future demands: ♦ Critical thinkers – Being able to view a situation from many angles is an essential part of innovation. Children must be able to analyze and evaluate with their own intelligence rather than accepting what they hear at face value. ♦ Creative problem solvers – Life continuously presents us with problems and dilemmas. When children have experience in solving their own problems, they view these obstacles as challenges rather than defeats. They know that situations are workable, they take problems in stride and work to overcome them. They must have the mental flexibility that allows them to apply creative solutions to mundane situations, and think outside the box. ♦ Proactivity – They must have a sense of what needs to be accomplished, and know how to go about implementing their ideas and evaluating the results. ♦ Confidence – They must have the ability to go beyond common fears and inhibitions and act without hesitation. They must be able to interact and communicate with others from different places and different backgrounds. ♦ Responsibility – They must be able to manage

W

35

their own lives. Especially if they are to become entrepreneurs, independent contractors, or freelancers like much of the modern workforce, they must be able to manage their time and commitments gracefully. ♦ International – They must have a big world view, with an awareness of diverse peoples and an intercultural sensitivity that allows them to move between and among national borders, racial boundaries, and languages with comfort and ease. ♦ Communicative – The clear presentation of ideas to others is a critical aspect of success in any field. The extent to which we can effectively have others understand our needs and intentions is often the extent to which we can get things accomplished. ♦ Team workers – The dynamic ability to work well with other people builds leadership skills. Kids who can work on a team to complete a task, become adults who can organize and manage groups to achieve their goals. ♦ Curious – They must be interested and inspired to reflect, examine, explore, and discover the vast expanse of their world. Life is a continuous journey of discovery, and our kids need to be raised to be lifelong learners. The existing school models were designed over 50 years ago. Our kids are growing up into a world very different from the one schools are training them for. Today’s child needs to learn to be an innovator, entrepreneur, freelance worker who can think outside the box. The existing school models are not good enough for today’s children.

The Mixed Age Classroom

Accreditation

Some parents are trying to co-ordinate science groups and musical groups. If there is enough interest, we will take monthly trips to the skate board park in Bangkok, and to the cable-ski wakeboarding park in Ratchaburi.

Students are grouped by ability rather than age. This is among the most important reasons for our success. All students have strengths and weaknesses, and they all develop at different rates. Teaching to ability level keeps the quick kids interested and allows them to excel. Other kids need more attention and need to review more frequently. Currently, we are hosting children from Grades 2 through 6, and we will expand each year to meet their needs. Another advantage of the mixed-age classroom is that younger students will ‘spy’ on the older ones. They look up to the advanced kids and get interested in the work that other kids are doing. Almost every day, a ‘little kid’ will brag to me that s/he can spell a ‘big kid’ word, because s/he was eavesdropping on the lesson. They often progress more quickly because they take an interest in what’s next and as a result of their enthusiasm, leap ahead. The older students often step into roles of maturity and leadership when they are in the company of younger kids. I often see older students reading to a group of younger students. I studied a research project where kids who were doing poorly in their grade level were given the task of tutoring a younger kid. Both of the kids improved in subsequent testing. The younger kids were keen to learn from an older ‘buddy.’ The older kids reinforced their existing skills and developed some confidence and pride in their capability, which had previously been lacking. Curriculum The mixed age classroom really works for our We are quite traditional in our approach to children. English, Thai and Maths. The groups are small After School and Weekend Activities and the children get a lot of individual attention. All kids are welcome to join us for outdoor The books we use come from England, America, supervised play after school. We are also hosting Australia and Thailand. dance lessons, self defense and football clubs. We are not a licensed elementary school in Thailand. We get our accreditation from the United States. If parents need annual transcripts, the administrator submits the student’s course work to a school in California, and (for a fee) the Californian school issues the official documents. An American High School Diploma is the qualification we are currently able to offer upon graduation, but we hope to expand the program to offer the International Baccalaureate by 2014.

The “Campus”

Our schoolhouse sits in a neighborhood hit hard by the global economic crisis. Most of the neighborhood is vacant, making the swimming pool, clubhouse, and courtyard facilities an ideal playground for these kids. There is a “stage” area for theatre performances. They play basketball, badminton, dodgeball and schoolyard games in the courtyard. At the house itself, there is a playground with climbing structures, classrooms, kitchen and a yoga/dance studio. The kids write their own puppet shows and perform them in the puppet-theatre. The adjacent plots of land are vacant, so kids use those for planting, growing, gardening, digging, sand-play, and sometimes football, although there is a professional public football field just 1 km away, as well as a MuayThai training camp next door.

The Schedule

As westerners living in Thailand, we honor both the Thai and European summers. Teachers and students alike often complain that standard summer holidays are too long. Kids often regress over the holidays, losing ground in the progress accomplished during the year. We study for three terms per year and spread the holidays out over the year. Some people are excited about this revolutionary approach to education, but actually this isn’t something new. I didn’t make it up. Educators and social reformers have been talking about this kind of education since the ‘60s. Unfortunately, established systems are slow to change. We’re lucky that parents were dissatisfied with the other local schools and were willing to take a chance here. After a few months with me, they’ve all been convinced that alternative education is a more healthy and effective learning model for their children. Padma Fischer-White – Halio Hua Hin (On Facebook)

Santa, The Magical Person in other Countries

Christmas is a very special time for many children - the day presents are left by a magical person In the United States and Canada, his name is Santa Claus. He flies through the sky in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. In England his name is Father Christmas. He looks much like Santa Claus, but he has a longer coat and a longer beard. In Wales (a principality in the United Kingdom), Santa is called Sion Corn - this translates as “Chimney John” relating to the story that Santa comes down the chimney of each house to bring his gifts to the children within. Each child puts grass under their bed for the camels and in the morning the grass is replaced with gifts. In Sweden it is Jultomten or Tomten.

Jultomten visits in the evening before Christmas day, pulling a big bag of julklappar (Christmas presents) in the deep snow. På norsk (in Norwegian) “Julenissen” arrives on the evening of the 24th. In the Netherlands, he is called Kerstman. He flies through the sky with his reindeers and puts gifts under the Christmas tree on the 25th of December In Finland, he is called Joulupukki and his home is in Lapland in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturl. Also in Finland, the Swedish-speaking Finns (finlandssvenskar) call him Julgubben. Saturday Night BBQ Jazz at Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin

T

he reason why I called the Hotel for a food review, feeling a bit different, was because of the playful logo of the “three wise monkeys”, the hotel´s logo. Just like the Hotel Description, overlooking the Gulf Of Siam, The Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin offers guests a perfect respite from the outside world. In keeping with its name and playful logo of the “three wise monkeys”, every detail is anticipated to ensure you truly surrender to the charms of this tropical seaside resort,

By Gmoss

encompassing body, mind and soul .Gracious, friendly Thai hospitality and service. Unique modern design with chic colorful touches, together with a sumptuous cuisine will create special memories and a desire to return again and again. Now! Coming on Saturday´s BBQ & Jazz dinner at Rest Detail, the area of Saturday´s BBQ & Jazz is exposing the “Rest” scenery that the overviews the deep blue Gulf of Siam as well as the colorful swimming pool which made me feel like free for relaxing time after work and enjoy Jazz Music with my dinner concentrating now on the menue. I’m going to eat… Cold and Salads: Chilled New Zealand Mussels with Tomato Salsa dip ,Chilled Prawns with a cocktail sauce dip ,Chilled Smoked Sea Bass with mustard dill sauce dip and Sushi. Specially recommended by Chef de Cuisine is the Caesar salad. For a Soup, there is Tuna chowder, Sweet and Sour soup with Prawns. The main course contains Grilled Beef Tenderloin with mushroom sauce, Mackerel steak with lemon and almond butter sauce, Sauté Prawns with spiced tomato sauce, Steamed fish with soya sauce among others. The highlight of dinner at Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin is not only seafood BBQ but many kinds of European and Thai food. The BBQ

Menue contains popular Seafood, Prawn, Squid, Beef, Pork and Chicken with dips such as their cream sauce or Thai sauce. Check out the Pasta corner: If you are looking for Italian European food, you will also think of Spaghetti and Pasta .Oh.., there are hundreds of different shapes of pasta. How are you going to order? Don’t worry at Rest Detail Saturday BBQ & Jazz Buffet you can choose what you want or ask for a recommendation from the Chef or indulge in the Salad bar. The Dessert menue: Seasonal fresh fruit. A variety of Thai sweets, cakes and pies, homemade ice cream with condiments. One of the highlights is Crêpe Suzette Flambé together with Vanilla Ice cream. I could not imagine

Cool Breeze

Bringing Spain to Hua Hin C

ool Breeze, Spanish delight, on Naresdamri Road, the coastal road after the Hilton towards the Port discloses the Cool Breeze Café, Bar & Restaurant. The name may not reveal the nature of the Restaurant but it is almost an authentic Spanish ambiance with real Spanish Tapas, Pinchos, Food and Wines. The Tapas and Food are a mixture of Spanish Geography. Whereas some Tapas come from the Mediterranean coast and The Serrano Ham from the middle of Spain, The Pinxtos come from the Basque coast. The wine from Rioja! A cool Don Simón Sangria welcomed us with compliments from owner Vaughn who took over from Tapas Café, formery Monsoon. The furniture and arrangement was changed drastically and patrons are now welcome to have a drink or enjoy a meal in the cozy atmosphere of the Restaurant. On Soccer and Rugby days, a TV set silently shows the course of the game. A soft Jazzy background music is pleasantly played in the background. There is a Downstairs, Garden, Roadside and Upstairs section. The upstairs reminds me of a fancy gentlemen´s club in central London whilst the balcony part gives you views of Naresdamri road and yes, the Gulf of Siam. However, once the food came in, the feeling changes to Spanish! As the Tapas and Pinxtos are served, a flamenco atmosphere is born. The mixed plate of Serano Ham, Chorizo Pamplona, Chorizo Picante and Boquerón and chicken Liver Paté with a glass of Sangria made you feel on the Med Coast. We were treated with promptness and impeccable service, not over dover but

hot and cool mix together, but Hmm yummy. Before I like to order Ice cream after a hot Buffet but now I can have it together! I changed my mind! Finally, we got a presentation by Chef Noppadol Nucharoen Culinary Director. I really needed the Chef to recommend the food and teach us how to cook it. Chef commented that: cooking special food is beautiful just like a part of Art for those that love to create an idea of food. But of course it also depends on your training! The Chef of Rest Detail Resort was trained very well, the food was delicious Q!

White Truffle By La Grappa Hua Hin

By Gmoss

White Truffle: This wonderful mushroom comes in

friendly and almost unnoticeable. Smooth. Ever had crab cakes with red pepper mayonnaise? A must ! Goes together well with a glass of chilled sparkling wine or just white wine, from Spain of course. Didn´t want to beat around the bush, Paella it must be. Paella de Mariscos, Seafood Paella. It takes a while to make a fresh Paella as the rice, together with the tomato sauce, stock and Saffron is cooked on a flame in the Paella Pan before it is garnished with fresh seafood and shoved into the oven. Paella is originally from Valencia on the Med. Coast with either Seafood, Chicken or Rabbit. The Paella was delicious and very tasteful. They will even make a 1 person Paella, a 2 or a 4 Person Paella as well. Vino de Espana can be ordered by the bottle. My favorite is The blue Ribbon Rioja which is a dry wine from the Spanish Midlands. Rioja is made from grapes grown not only in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, but also in parts of Navarre and the Basque province of Álava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines

have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions though there is a slow growth in single zone wines. There are some great sparkling wines in Spain such as Cava and some greater Brandies – Veterano, Soberano, Osborne and Gran Duque de Alba. It definitely is a unique dining experience, just something different, something else. And if there is any special wish, they will make it ! Did I mention the desserts? Flan (Crème Brulee), Chocolate Soup, Brownies with Ice cream, Ice creams and fresh fruit Trifle. Upstairs there is also an exhibition of lovely paintings by Elsie Evans (www.attic-studios. com) Highly recommendable Cool Breeze. Parking nearby but within a stroll from the two large hotels. Cozy, social and friendly. Worth an evening out !o ree to contact us for more information. Address : 62 Naresdamri road – Tel. and Fax : 032 531 1062 – Web : www. coolbreezecafebar.com

season for a limited period of time each autumn in Italy. La Grappa gives our customers the opportunity to enjoy the “Alba White Truffle” with its full Aroma and Flavour presented with selected dishes to bring this unique product of Mother Nature to its best. These are some of the dishes that we will have until the availability of White Truffle ends: • Soft and Crispy Egg with Parmesan Cheese fondue • Veal tartar and green Asparagus • Angel Hair Pasta with butter sauce and Parmesan cheese • Hand made Tortellini stuffed with Veal and Mushrooms • Wild mushroom cream soup • Veal Tenderloin white Brie Cheese Fondue and baby Spinach

The “white truffle” or “Alba madonna” (Tuber magnatum) comes from the Langhe area of the Piedmont region in northern Italy and, most famously, in the countryside around the city of Alba; in Italy it can also be found in Molise and in the hills around San Miniato, in Tuscany. It is also found in Croatia, on the Istria peninsula in the Motovun forest alongside Mirna river. Growing symbiotically with oak, hazel, poplar and beech and fruiting in autumn, they can reach 12cm diameter and 500 g, though are usually much smaller. The flesh is pale cream or brown with white marbling. Italian white truffles are very highly esteemed and are the most valuable on the market: the white truffle market in Alba is busiest in the months of October and November when the Fiera del Tartufo (truffle fair) takes place. In 2001, the Tuber magnatum truffles sold for between US$1,000 and $2,200 per pound (US$2000 to US$4500 per kg); as of December 2009 they were being sold at €10,200 per kilogram. Personal Disappearance in Thailand Part II L

ast time we began a discussion of the law of personal disappearance in Thailand. The real issue for all these cases is what happens to the legal relationships and property of those who have disappeared. This may sound more sinister than it should. Very often a person confronts life problems that her or she can’t face, for example a bad marriage or a business relationship that has gone disastrously wrong. Sometimes a person in this situation will simply leave town and not tell anybody where he or she is going. Or maybe the person only tells a very few, who don’t let on to others what has happened.

By James Finch and Nilobon Tangprasit of Chavalit, Finch & Partners, Ltd.

are the heir of someone who has disappeared. In Thailand this can happen in two ways. The missing person could have a will in which you were named a beneficiary. Alternatively, you might be a statutory heir under Thai law, which means you have a right to inherit from a person even if that person doesn’t have a will. An example of a statutory heir is a wife, son or daughter.

Let’s say, then, as an example, that your father has disappeared and not been heard from in six years. Your mother is broke and you need money to go to school. Your father was the sole owner of a bank account that contains But the fact is that there may be people left several million baht and a house. Let’s say you The third situation is the missing business under Sections 61 and 62 would cause the

partnership to be dissolved and allow the other partners to resume active business. The final situation is that of the disappeared tenant. Thai law provides, in effect, that if a lease does not provide otherwise and if the tenant dies, the lease is terminated. This means all rights under the lease go back to the landlord. Let’s assume, for example, that your wife, a Thai, owns a plot of land. Ten years ago she gave a 30-year lease for the land to Mr. X, who built a house on it. He has disappeared, but his wife is there. She’s short on money, however, and is behind in the rent. Your wife could apply to have Mr. X declared disappeared. The lease would revert to your wife and she could take possession or rent it to someone else. Of course, Mr. X could have prevented the lease being terminated on his presumed death by providing in the lease that it survived his death and would, in this event, go to his wife. Likewise, he could have made his wife a joint tenant on the lease. In this case, Mr. X’s wife would take over, not your wife. Your wife would, in these cases, be limited to suing Mr. X’s wife for the rent or to terminate the lease for non-payment of the rent. Highlighting local tradition and culture of where it is located, the Hotêl de la Paix was once known as “The Hotel Cha-Am” or “Aleela Hotel”. With its present name derived from French literally meaning, “Peace and Serenity” in Thai, the hotel offers all rooms which harmonize its modern design with local nature. Spacious and comfortable, the rooms are surrounded with beautiful plants and trees as air filters and overlook the beautiful beaches of Hua Hin and ChaAm. Such perfect location and environment make the guests feel like staying in Maldives, said Mr. Nigel Tovey, the hotel’s General Manager. Apart from the beautiful and close-to-nature design, with 79 rooms and pool villas offers complete facilities: plasma TVs, Wi-Fi, bathroom with rainshower, Jacuzzi and an Indo-China spa shower set. Other amenities include restaurants, swimming pools and meeting halls. Thai and foreign celebrities, particularly singers, actors and well-known businesspeople from Europe and Scandinavian, are the target group of the hotel. They keep coming back thanks to warm hospitality by well-trained Thai staff and, most importantly, the local annual activities that the hotel organizes, such as Songkran and Loy Krathong.

The hotel’s GM said that the Hotêl de la Paix was located in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. In everywhere it is located; the hotel brings out local culture as a selling point so that guests learn the priceless value of local intellect. Mr. Tovey also added that, since they were the beautiful and tranquil beachfront cities with convenient location just 2 hours away from Bangkok, Cha-Am and Hua Hin were famous among Thais and foreigners in need of holiday relaxation. Therefore, Thai government has to work closely with local authorities in taking care of local and transnational businesses and local people’s life. Infrastructure and safety should be put into authorities’ concern on urban development of the two cities as these are the main factors that affect the stay of visitors. “The current flooding in Thailand has great effect to foreign tourists because news from local media makes them misunderstand about the situation in the country as a whole,” said Mr. Tovey. “Many tourists canceled booking at our hotel because they thought that Thailand didn’t want foreigners to come to the country.” At present, the hotel business entrepreneurs in Cha-Am and Hua Hin are calling for the help of the local Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to rehabilitate and improve the country after the flood, especially in the areas of Hua Hin and Cha-Am because the cities are still popular among tourists.

elcome to the latest edition of Language Corner, the easy to understand guide to speaking functional Thai. As New Year is coming, we are going to look at what we will say during this time of celebration.

The greeting in Thai remains the same for this event and is simple ‘Sa-wat-dee’ plus ‘New Year’ which is ‘bpee mai’. ‘Sa-wat-dee bpee mai!’ which is directly translated as ‘Hello New Year!’ Alternatively, you can say ‘Suk-san wan bpee mai!’. We say both phrases for ‘Happy New Year’ but for ‘Merry Christmas’ we say ‘Suk-san wan Christmas!’ If you just want to raise your glass and wish someone ‘Good Luck’ you can say ‘Chook-dee’ which is the Thai equivalent to the European ‘Cheers’ ‘Prost’ ‘Santé’ and ‘Skol’ Practice dialogue between Noi and James: Noi: Kun James ja bpai tiao tee-nai wan bpee mai ka? James: Pom kit waa pom ja bpai Chiang Mai krap. Noi: Kor hai tiao sa-nuk na ka. James: Kop-kun krap. Sa-wat-dee bpee mai na krap. Noi: Suk-san wan bpee mai chen-gan ka.!

Where will you go for New Year? I think I will go to Chiang Mai. Have fun on your holiday. Thank you. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you too!

Vocabulary Wan = Day Bpee = Year Mai = New Ja = Will Bpai tiao = Go on holiday Tee-nai = Where Kit waa = Think that Sa-nuk = Fun Chen-gan = The same
