From the Editor Today

After a very quiet October with events in Bangkok dominating the thoughts and sentiments of everyone in Thailand, November arrived as the ‘storm after the calm’. It seems like the changing of the seasons began in more ways than one. The most obvious sign was the severe weather event near the end of last month when a massive deluge brought both Hua Hin and Cha-Am to a halt with many roads impassable. Some say this was the wettest day in memory. Although flooding was short-lived for many, our thoughts go to the residents of Phetchaburi town as the real casualties from dam overflows. My November ‘obligations’ included too many very social gatherings which included sampling some of the best cuisine in town day and night. As a small joke I posted a series of pictures of some wonderful dishes over one week which drew many responses from unsympathetic friends. For example: “someone is having a lot of fun there!!!”, “you are really being spoilt”, “is this for the paper or are you on holidays somewhere”, “great work if you can get it” and finally “you most likely went straight out for a Big Mac afterwards......!!” Thanks to all the commentators their words of encouragement but more importantly thanks to the hosts of the various establishments for their gracious hospitality. Christmas and New Year is the most significant time of the year for many foreigners in town. Some struggle to recognise a festive season without snow and ice although warm weather is very normal if you are from the southern hemisphere. A beach bar BQ is a great alternative to ‘chestnuts roasting on the open fire’. The management and staff of Hua Hin Today wish all our readers and friends the very best for this Festive Season. 4 Golden Triangle is ‘Ground Zero’ for Wildlife Trafficking - WWF

Tigers, elephants, bears and pangolins are four of the most widely traded species in the Golden Triangle border area where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, according to a report released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

Rhinos, serow, helmeted hornbill, gaur, leopards and turtles round out the list of endangered species that are openly sold in a region considered “ground zero” in the illegal wildlife trade.

Endangered species are often seen for sale in a criminal trade that threatens wildlife A major driver of the trade is tourists from China and Vietnam travelling to areas such as Mong La and Tachilek in Myanmar, and border areas such as Boten and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos. “Illegal, unregulated and unsustainable trade is driving wild populations of hundreds of species into endangerment, not only in the Greater Mekong but around the world,” Chrisgel Cruz, technical adviser on Wildlife Trade for WWF-Greater Mekong. “Border areas like the Golden Triangle are where this trade thrives and where we must work hardest to protect the defenceless.”

Many of the Asia’s poached and farmed tigers pass through the Golden Triangle, where they end up in tiger wine, on dinner tables, in dubious medicines, or as luxury items and jewellery.

Two sun bears at a bear rescue centre. The bear’s gall bladders are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Bear meat, particularly the paws, is considered a culinary delicacy. Killing bears is illegal in all bear range countries but is largely uncontrolled. They are banned from international commercial trade. “Bear farms and tiger farms, along with wide open wildlife markets across the Golden Triangle, are menaces to wild populations of these species and should be closed,” said Bill Possiel, WWF-Greater Mekong regional conservation director. “This region has a deserved reputation as both a destination and source of some of the world’s most endangered species and that has to stop or these species could go extinct.” Also covered in keratin is the pangolin, which is in high demand in China and Vietnam for its scales and is considered the most trafficked animal in the world. Another species, the helmeted hornbill, has a massive helmet-like structure on its head that is ideal for carvings similar to ivory.

The serow, a mountain-dwelling, goat-like species, is highly prized for its meat and body parts, which are used in traditional medicine in Laos. Leopards, which were once widely found across Southeast Asia, are now poached for their skin and skulls. Turtles are widely sold, both alive and as decorative objects. Meanwhile a new great ape species—the Tapanuli orangutan — has been officially announced by an international team of scientists. With no more than 800 individuals, the Tapanuli orangutan is the most endangered of all great apes. Previously, two species of orangutans were known; the Bornean orangutan and Sumatran orangutan. This new third species lives in North Sumatra, but is genetically and behaviorally distinct from the two other species. “This discovery not only demonstrates how much we still don’t know about the biodiversity on our planet, but also sheds further light on the precarious position species like the Tapanuli orangutan are in as their forest homes are increasingly threatened by conversion,” said Nilanga Jayasinghe, senior program officer for Asian species, WWF. “It’s critical to address the many threats to their habitat if we want to secure their future.” http://www.wwf.or.th

8 Holiday Remains; King Bhumibol to be known as ‘the Great’

The government is in the process of honoring HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej with the prestigious designation of “The Great”

“We have already started the process,” said Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. The government has been preparing to honour King Rama IX as “Somdet Phra Bhajdhara Maharaja”. The name can be interpreted as the “Glorious” or “Best King”.

He said the attendance at the ritual to lay sandalwood flowers was the biggest showing in Thailand’s history for a royal ceremony. “The Great” is traditionally attached to the name of a king who was outstanding and had a major influence during his reign. King Rama IX will be the seventh king with “The Great” designation once the process is complete. In Thai history, other kings granted the designation included King Rama I, who founded the current Chakri Dynasty, King Rama V, who abolished slavery in Thailand and significantly modernized the country, and King Naresuan and King Taksin, each of whom restored Thailand’s independence at different periods. King Rama IX was the longest-reigning Thai monarch to date. His reign lasted seven full decades from 1946 to 2016. During the period he was devoted to his people and worked tirelessly to improve their well-being, becoming known as the “Father of the Land”. Over the seven decades, Thailand transformed from an underdeveloped nation to an upper-middle income country with significant developments on many fronts. As a result, King Rama IX won the near-universal love and respect from his people. Steps such as building a monument or offering a designation to the late monarch would require the Cabinet’s approval and the Royal Household Bureau’s endorsement. Athisit Chainuwat, deputy government spokesman, said the Cabinet had approved three categories of activities to be held to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday: physical, verbal and mental activities. Physical activities include cleaning temples, visiting sick people, reading to the blind and hosting exhibitions; verbal activities included taking an oath of loyalty, performing good deeds and singing the Royal Anthem in front of the King’s portrait; and mental activities included meditating and praying.

The cabinet has resolved to keep December 5th as a public holiday each year in honour of his Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Assistant government spokesman, Col Athisit Chainuwat, said the cabinet decision follows its acknowledgement of a recent Prime Minister’s Office announcement signed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. According to the announcement, which is in accordance with a royal command, December 5th will from now on be observed as an important national day to remember the late King’s contributions to this country. The day is designated as the birthday anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the country’s National Day, and Fathers’ Day, according to the announcement. The Nation/Bangkok Post

Municipality Urges People to Help Toon Help Thai Hospitals

The Hua Hin Municipality asked local people to give moral and financial support to Toon Bodyslam, the famous Thai rock singer and the host of the charity campaign for 11 hospitals throughout Thailand. In this campaign, the lead singer of the rock band Bodyslam is running from the from southernmost Betong district in Yala province to Mae Sai, the northernmost district of Chiang Rai in a 2,191 kilometre charity run . The main objective of the running charity campaign hosted by Toon Bodyslam is to encourage Thai people to donate some money for the country’s medium-sized hospitals currently in need of medical equipment. Mid November the rock singer had covered one-third of his charity run, or 700 kilometres, and has collected over 280 million THB in donations. He also became a role model for Thai people to stay healthy by jogging every day. A few months ago, Toon Bodyslam did this running campaign to help Bang Saphan Hospital in Prachuab Khirikhan. However, a lot of hospitals in Thailand need financial support for infrastructure improvement. Realising the problem, the Thai rock star reinitiated the project and made it bigger to help more Thai hospitals, namely Yala Hospital, Surath Thani Hospital, Ratchaburi Hospital, Chao Phraya Yomarat Hospital, Saraburi Hospital, Khon Kaen Hospital, Chao Phraya Aphai Phubet Hospital, Nakhon Phing Hospital, Chiang Rai Prachanukhroh Hospital, Nan Hospital and King Mongkut Hospital in Bangkok, where patients from other provinces are admitted daily.

The present running charity campaign is designed to be bigger and take more time so that donation becomes a lot more than the previous one. Also, no one in the country has done this before. It started on 1st November in Yala and is planned to end on 25th December in Chiang Rai. The host believes that, if each of 70 million Thai people donates 10 THB, he will receive 700,000,000 THB in total at the end of the campaign. Apart from seeing Thai people help each other, Toon Bodyslam would like them to take exercise to stay healthy. Since this campaign is the last activity of the rock singer, all Thai people are encouraged to help him make this mission possible. 10 Don Mueang Bridge Renovations Started

The bridge to enter Don Mueang International Airport is closed until next September, with renovations for the bridge and its surrounding roads. The Department of Highways (DOH) has initiated the renovation project after persistent bottle-necking on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road affected passenger traffic and caused congestion in the area around the airport. The renovations will allow the outbound road to support three lanes of regular traffic. Construction and heavy machinery will be moved into the area. The bridge is set to be demolished, and reconstructed with a new design prior to reopening next year. During the renovations, outbound Vibhavadi Rangsit Road will be closed from 10pm to 4am daily, with two detours being

provided for motorists in the left lanes. During the daytime, traffic will be able to flow as usual. In the meantime, passengers heading into Don Mueang International Airport may choose three alternative routes. Passengers may choose to enter the airport via the first U-turn bridge located in front of the airport warehouse, the Don Mueang tollway or the third U-turn bridge, which is also known as the Royal Thai Air Force U-turn bridge. Heavy congestion is expected throughout the duration of the renovation project. Passengers should be prepared to leave two to three hours earlier than they would normally, to make sure they do not miss their flights. – Bangkok Post

Dutchman Arrested in Hua Hin for Alleged Child Sex Offences

Protection from Wrongful Tourism Business Practices Foreign tourists who feel they have been scammed by tourism businesses in Thailand can now file for compensation from the Thai government.

Tourism Department Director-General Anant Wongbenjarat said foreign tourists can file compensation claims from the department if they were swindled by registered tour companies that fail to operate as planned or advertised. He said the compensation will be paid by the Tourist Business Protection Fund, NNT reported. The fund requires tour companies and operators who have a valid license to deposit anywhere from 10,000 to 200,000 THB, depending on the size of their organisation and whether they offer inbound, outbound or domestic tours. The fund will then be used to speed up the payment of compensation to tourists who have been scammed by unscrupulous tour companies. Once the compensation has paid to the claimant, the Tourism Department will then go after the tour company to recoup the money. If the company fails to comply, they will lose their deposit and could have their license suspended. However, a compensation claim can only be made against a registered tour company or operator. A claim cannot be made against an unregistered tour

A Dutchman arrested in Hua Hin for alleged sexual abuse of a child aged 15 or under had been investigated for an alleged similar offence before leaving the Netherlands. Songsak Raksaksakul, deputy directorgeneral of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), told a media briefing that Reinold Klunder, 51, was arrested at house in the Bo Fai community of Hua Hin district. A boy aged about 10 years was with him. Sex toys, eight computers, many memory cards and compact discs were seized. Police charged Mr Klunder with molesting a child and separating the child from his parents for paid molestation,” Police Colonel Songsak said. The investigation was being expanded. Police Colonel Songsak Raksaksakul, deputy director-general of the Department of Special Investigation Mr Klunder had moved to Thailand from the Netherlands, he said. In his homeland he had allegedly been charged with child molestation, but was not convicted. In Thailand, he had been in the property business for five years. He allegedly played music to lure children into sharing activities with him. Investigators said he had regularly taken children aged 15 or under to his house. Dutch authorities had asked Thai authorities to collect evidence against him, Pol Col Songsak said. A representative of the Netherlands Embassy was with the officials during the raid. He warned that child sex abuse was growing in Thailand and other Southeast

Asian nations. Foreigners who were released temporarily after such offences in Thailand often repeated them in Cambodia, Myanmar or Vietnam. In Thailand, child sex abuse was reported in Chonburi (113 offences since 2010), Chiang Mai (25 offences) and Bangkok (seven). Bangkok Post

By definition the contract made with a credit card does not change the consumer’s right to cancel the purchase of goods or services within 45 days from the date of purchase of goods and services, or within 30 days from the due date of delivery of goods or services. If you have already been charged, the money will be returned to the consumer within 30 days from the date the consumer informs the company concerned in domestic cases. When the consumer sends a letter to terminate the contract, they should make two copies, keeping one for themselves as evidence and another to send to the credit card company. The letter to terminate the contract must be sent within 30 days from the date of the contract and should be sent as registered mail at a post office as proof of the notice. If the contract is terminated and the company does not refund the payment, the matter may then be brought to court. 12 Roll-Out Biometric Checks for SIM Cards Nationwide

Thailand will introduce biometric checks nationwide for mobile telephone users to register their SIM cards from December 15th in a bid to stamp out fraudulent electronic transactions. The new rules require users to either have their fingerprints verified or their faces scanned. Biometric subscriber identity module (SIM) registration which is described as a process of identifying the personal information of a subscriber by using their biometric characteristics has been recent Governments’ efforts in fighting crimes and curb possible terrorist attacks. Biometrics has proved to be an effective and optimal choice in the SIM card management. As many crimes triggered by mobile phones threaten nation security, an increasing number of Governments has urged to look for a more secure and convenient way to monitor those. In the future, there will be more and more countries realise the advantages of biometrics and adopt its use in the telecommunication to reduce mobile phone related crime such as money laundering, cyber terrorism, and prank calls.

Secretary-general Takorn Tantasith of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) demonstrates ‘fingerprint enrolment’ The regulator first launched the system in June in Thailand’s troubled south. Officials say insurgents in the largely ethnic Malay Muslim provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat have used pre-paid SIM cards to trigger bombs. Biometric registration in the south was adopted for national security reasons but elsewhere in Thailand it is aimed at mobile banking security, said regulatory official Takorn Tantasith. “This is not aimed at tracking users, but enhancing security, especially in case of mobile payments,” said Takorn, the secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission. Similar biometric systems are already in use in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. From December 15th, Thais will be required to register new SIM cards, both pre-paid and post-paid, at service centres and retailers across the country, which will be equipped with biometric tools, he added. SIM cards for postpaid accounts are now registered on purchase, while pre-paid SIM cards can be bought with no identification.

Mobile operators will shoulder the cost of card readers, which range from 500 baht ($15) to 9,000 baht ($271), he added. The verification process might alternatively involve facial scans, depending on the equipment available. After verification, service centres will send users’ data to mobile operators for record-keeping, without storing any information on-site, Takorn said. According to a survey of telecommunications fraud and security experts, global fraud loss in the industry for 2013 is US$46.3 billion, a 15% rise from 2011. The primary reason for the increase was fraudulent activity targeting the wireless industry through new ways of stealing identities, devices and network access.

Thailand’s Fragrant Hom Mali Rice Voted World’s Best

The World Rice Conference has declared Thailand’s fragrant Hom Mali variety the world’s best rice, maintaining Thailand’s number one position after several years of lower rice quality.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said that the conference in Macau has declared the Hom Mali 105 variety the world’s best rice in 2017, while the second and third rankings went to Cambodian and Vietnam. He said the referees were chefs from hotels in Macau, and the criteria were the taste and shape of the rice grain. It was the second consecutive year that Thailand’s fragrant rice won the championship. It had lost the title to Myanmar in 2011, Cambodia in 2012-2013 and the US in 2015. Winning the title again this year would boost Thai rice revenues, Chookiat said, as

it would increase both global demand and prices. He added the price of Thai Hom Mali rice was already much higher than that of Cambodian and Vietnamese varieties, with Thai Hom Mali quoted at US $850 a ton, compared to Cambodia’s at $750 and Vietnam’s at $550. Over the past four years, the price of Cambodian rice approached the Thai price, Chookiat said, as Cambodian rice was judged the world’s best rice in 2012 and 2013. Waste Management Campaign at Boh Fai School In 2004 the Boh Fai Municipal School launched a waste management campaign, starting with a bank to recycle waste and garbage with the main objective to promote waste selection and separation prior to dumping.

This campaign has been extended from the school to the students’ homes with the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion awarding it a HRH Princess Sirindhorn trophy in 2015. Realising the importance of the campaign, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion wanted to encourage the active cooperation of the community where the school is situated to raise awareness about waste management among Thai people, reducing the amount of dumped garbage and promote recycling it wisely. The Department has now approved a project to establish 9 learning centres about waste management at Boh Fai School and community. On 10th November, the Zero Waste School Learning Centre was officially opened at Boh Fai School by Mr. Ratchada Suryakul na Ayudhaya, the Director General of the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion and the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul. The Hua Hin Mayor said that setting up the learning centre at Boh fai School integrated education about environmental conservation and promoted the participation of students and teachers.

He also said that the amount of garbage increases every day and sustainable waste management is needed with the cooperation of public and private organisations. Finally, the Mayor would like Hua Hin people to take greate care of the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling garbage wisely before dumping it. To promote waste free zones in Hua hin, students should realise the impact of waste on the environment and practice selfdiscipline about environmental protection.

at Hua Hin Witthayakhom School Officials of the Basic Education Commission have visited Hua Hin Witthayakhom School and attended a meeting with the instructors and executives at the Hua Hin Grand Hotel and Plaza. The meeting’s main agenda included formulating an integral education plan under current governmental policy and presenting awards to teachers. Because the monkey is a primate and close to humans, if the monkey has a disease there is also the chance of spreading this disease to humans.

Over the years, there have been many new or emerging diseases and some of these diseases are spread from monkeys, e.g. monkey’s smallpox, dengue hemorrhagic fever, Ebola dengue, especially dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue Ebola fever are a very dangerous disease and there are no vaccines against these diseases. Viruses from monkeys are easily to spread to Human. Symptoms may not appear in monkeys, but when caught up with people there can be serious consequences. A virus could be transmitted from monkeys and gibbons to humans from bites, scratches, saliva, stools, and urine, and mucus. The Public Health and Environment Division of Hua Hin Municipality want to educate people not to approach wild

monkeys and not to feed them to prevent the spread of diseases from these monkeys. For people who have a monkey they must watch for sickness, fever or not eating food. In these circumstances the monkey should be taken it to a vet for a diagnosis. Be careful not to make monkeys stressed or irritability, because this is when someone can be bitten or scratched and a wound prone to infection. The Health and Environment Division of Hua Hin Municipality is trying to solve the monkey problems at Hin Lek Fai and Khao Takiab by capturing and sterilising monkeys. It is planned that in the year 2018 the Monkey Population Control Program will sterilise more than 500 monkeys.

The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and businesspeople have recently built a new classroom building for students with autism at Ban Nong Khon School in Hua Hin. According to the Rotary Club’s Chairperson Mrs. Wassana Ra-e, the construction of the building cost over 500,000 Thai Baht. The initiative belongs to two businesspeople from Bangkok, Mrs. Waneeporn Phanthutecha and Mr. Phakdee Phaknara. Located at Ban Nong Khon School in Hua Hin, the new classroom building has one floor and boasts exquisite traditional Thai architecture of Pan Ya, featuring the sloped and trapezoidal roof. Inside the building, there are a lot of learning and teaching materials for students and teachers. The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin helped the businesspeople to build the new classroom building because this activity conforms the major objective of the club which is established to take care of disadvantaged and disabled people.

Every year, the club’s members and private business owners join in many social activities to help poor and disadvantaged people. The new classroom building was offered to Ban Nong Khon School where kindergarten students with autism will study. Mrs. Wassana added that the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin was launched over a decade ago by 30 local people in the city. The club’s meetings are is held four times a month to consider ways to help poor and disadvantaged people. Social activities are usually initiated by donation of all members and other people. Next year, the club is planning to build a playground at Ban Nong Ta Phao in Hua Hin to honor His Majesty King Bhumibhol and provide the students with more space to play and take excercise. Those interested in making donation or participating in the club’s social activities are welcome to do. 14 King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Last Encounter with Foreign Press In April 2008, nine members of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand were granted an audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej to present him with the second edition of “The King of Thailand in World Focus,” a book showing how his life had been covered by the foreign media since his birth in the U.S. in 1927.

When the name of a senior army officer eluded him, he called over the general. The officer crossed the carpet on his knees, but the name eluded him too. “You see what I have to put up with,” the king joked, lifting his arms in mock despair.

“The King of Thailand in World Focus” There was no doubt that the king liked the book, which included a photograph of his U.S. birth certificate stamped “Commonwealth of Massachusetts.” He expressed his thanks three times, but not, it seemed, because the book flattered him. “It will show people what we tried to do,” he said. The audience, lasting over 135 minutes, took place in the Chitralada Villa of Dusit Palace, set in an area large enough for an 18-hole golf course — a game he despised as a burden on the environment. “I am an enemy of golf courses,” he said — not that he had anything against golfers personally. King Bhumibol was standing dressed in a dark lounge suit, and he shook hands with everybody in the group individually. A general and a member of the king’s personal secretariat were the only other people to remain in the room in the hours that followed. The king, 80 at the time, had been suffering from serious back problems that had required surgery in 2006. His condition may have been exacerbated by his passion for sailing heavy wooden dinghies in his younger days. He sat on a sofa with a cane by his side, and appeared comfortable throughout, responding immediately and often humorously. On 6th November, the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul chaired an opening ceremony to ordinate Brahmin nuns at the Ratana Phithak Buddhist Meditation Centre in the Nong Kae Community. Also attended by the Deputy Mayor, the Permanent Secretary of the Hua Hin Municipality as well as distinguished guests, this event was held to honour Thai monarchs, particularly His Majesty King Bhumibhol. It was hosted by Hua Hin Temple, the Social Welfare Division of Hua Hin Municipality and local communitiy officials. Over 80 women were temporarily ordained with Brahmin nuns taking part in Dhama teaching sessions, medication practice, praying and observing the eight Buddhist precepts for purified and peace of mind. Slow brain development, causing the person to have a low IQ Abnormality in the functionality of their organs; such as valvular heart disease, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid hormone disorders and low immunity. In general, we would have 23 pairs of a chromosome or 46 chromosomes (23 from the father and 23 from the mother). People with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes.

Down syndrome may be divided into three main types: Trisomy 21 is the extra chromosome in chromosome 21 from an abnormality in the motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s egg cell division. This is the most common disorder 94 percent. Translocation is where a part of chromosome 21 moves or switches with another pair of chromosomes (mostly chromosome 14). Cha-Am Set To Welcome More Country & Western Music

They tell us that they strive to make the first draft of Santa’s “Naughty” and “Nice” lists by this day. Santa told us that doing extra chores, or something special to help out around the house between now and Christmas, will get you off the “Naughty” list, and onto the “Nice” list.

We wish he could have been born on the 5th, too. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still listen to his famed 5th Symphony to celebrate his birthday. But if we’re playing the numbers game, he did happen to compose exactly 16 string quartets.

22 Beachfront Cha-Am; What Does the Future Hold?

Cha-Am’s beach road with open access to the foreshore has long been the focus of the town’s attraction to visitors. However a recent survey of Cha-Am expats, many are looking for a development plan with questions being asked about the quality of some recent changes and the neglect of some important infrastructure Cha-Am also has a Tourist Advice Centre operated by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Why this is positioned some 1.5 km south of the town centre traffic lights and about 2 kilometres away from tourist precincts is beyond anyone’s understanding. It’s inaccessible, out of sight and out of mind!

At the northern end of the beach a real working fishing harbour, pier and village should provide an unusual cultural experience for visitors along with the freshest seafood and some of the best seafood restaurants anywhere. Travelling north along the beach road a small bridge is crossed before reaching the entry to the fishing village. There have been recent changes near to the entry with seafood restaurants being dismantled and a new development under construction on the ocean side. Soon after crossing an entry portal the road changes into an unsealed track with large and deep potholes posing a hazard to any vehicle and maybe only suitable for a fourwheel drive. The deterioration of the main acess to the fishing port and to the adjoining pier has been happened over some years, but it now almost impassable. Locals are hoping that there is some grander plan so that anyone can enjoy the sights and sounds (and smells!) of one of Cha-Am’s most important attractions.

A renovated bridge welcoms visitors to the fishing port but a deeply cratered entry soon turns them away. One example of a recent change has been the installation of new LED lighting on both sides of the beach road. Providing quality illumination for the verges has been very welcomed, but the quality of the installation is open to question. Being able to walk along the footpath was already difficult with street vendors and other stall holders blocking the way, but now the lighting posts add yet another obstruction. Not only the posts, but each base uses fixing bolts which are exposed. They are of varying height, often 30 mm above the surface, a perfect trip hazard for the unwary. Perhaps it’s just a visual illusion (we haven’t taken a spirit level) but many posts seem far from vertical. Locals have been shaking their heads at this good idea which seems to have been an opportunity lost.

The subject of official advice to tourists along the beach road may bring a wry smile to the face of locals. There’s long been a tourist police station but largely ignored by visitors. It’s never been ‘user-friendly’ or inviting with a very questionable level of English language being offered by the limited staff. Tourist Police on the beach have also lacked visibilty. However renovations to the building are underway so maybe that will see a welcome change.

A number of appealing new buildings (apart from the background pill-box) have appeared in recent years, however unsightly derelict buildings, overgrown and neglected for years can be found in prime locations.

The Tourism Police Station could be a centre for tourist advice and assistance.

The community is asking for a development plan which adresses deficiencies and allows for an understanding of improvements that may be on the horizon. Cha-Am has the potential to become a thriving tourism precinct but some fundamental changes are overdue.

Hua Hin and Cha-Am floods Recede, Southern Rail Line Reopens

Workers have drained water from Hua Hin after a downpour flooded Hua Hin and temporarily blocked roads and the southern railway. Officials from the Disaster Mitigation and Prevention office on Tuesday installed more pumps to drain water. Heavy rain flooded Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan at the end of November. The water levels receded but some areas remained flooded. The Cha-Am town area was also subject to flooding from the deluge, with locals commenting that they have never experienced such an event. Department chief Kittiporn Thepyuamnuay said about 300 houses in a low area in the municipality had been evacuated, as the water was up to two

meters high. Traffic police urged motorists to avoid Hua Hin by taking the bypass road linking Cha-am district in Phetchaburi with Pranburi in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Around 400m of the southern train line in the resort town remained flooded. The section was between Khao Tao station in Hua Hin and Wang Pong station in Pranburi. The southern track later reopened and the State Railway of Thailand is still closely monitoring the flooding situation in the area, the railway agency said. The downpour forced the Pala-u Waterfall in Hua Hin to close. The Meteorological Department still warned of more rain and possible flash floods in Prachuap Khiri Khan and 13 other provinces, including greater Bangkok due to tropical storm Kirogi.Â

24 R.I.P. Mrs Connie Heinecke; Hua Hin’s Iconic Grand Lady

Constance ‘Connie’ Heinecke was wellknown in Hua Hin society as a nonagenarian who spread her aura of elegance and humour wherever she graced an occasion with her presence. She has passed away at the age of 98 and her life is being celebrated by all her knew her. Constance ‘Connie’ Heinecke was born in Philadelphia in 1919. Connie came to Asia in 1952 when she and her two young sons followed her U.S. Marine husband to Japan. While her husband, Roy, served as a combat correspondent in Korea, Connie took a job as Women’s Editor for the Army, Navy and Air force Times. In 1956 Connie and her family moved to Hong Kong where Roy was Press Officer at the American Consulate. Connie wasted no time and opened Newsweek Magazine’s first Southeast Asian office. Later she became their regional advertising manager when the Heinecke family left Hong Kong for Kuala Lumpur and in 1963, Bangkok. Connie then continued to live in her adopted home in Thailand. Her son Bill is the CEO of the Minor Group of companies in Bangkok and a Thai citizen. With her two sons, three grandsons and one great grandson living in Ireland, U.S.A. and Thailand, she was a frequent world traveller when she wasn’t entertaining her friends and family with her amusing stories and jokes.

Golf has long been the most visible sport in Hua Hin commencing with Royal Hua Hin being Thailand’s original golf course opening in 1924 and award winning golf courses such as Black Mountain and Banyan often featuring in our golfing pages. Hua Hin’s sporting facilities include the multi-sport venue of True Arena, Vana Nava Water Park (flowboarding) and Kiteboard Asia. But this is just the ‘tip of the sporting iceberg’.

True Arena – the epicentre of Hua Hin’s Sporting Future We spent some time with George Grecia, the Director of Sport Development at True Arena Hua Hin to get a handle on how True Arena has progressed to become Hua Hin’s most versatile and progressive sports venue. At the time of our conversation the E@ Hua Hin Tennis Championships were happening on centre court. Our previous experiences had included the visit of the West Bromich Albion FC youth development squad to admire the ‘Premier League standard football pitches, including Chenaiyin FC, Yokohama FC, and several 1st division teams from Thai Premiere League making True Arena their preferred training ground. We also met the 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck during a road cycling event and seen the Women’s Fight Muay Thai World Championships. Coming soon, True Arena will be hosting group cycling training rides and offer novice running and swim training programs. But our conversation with George revealed there’s much more to come!

George is part of a very special team of sports promoters and trainers based at the most professional sporting venue in town. A big part of what’s to come involves Thomas Hallquist in his role as Head Coach of Multi-Sports. This includes grappling, mixed martial arts and triathlon training. Thomas is a past National Swedish wrestling champion but also excels in triathlon.

Thomas was very eager to reassure sports fans that the wrestling will not be the theatrical style we’ve all seen on the small screen but competitive sporting events (No Gi Grappling) similar to ADCC held in Dubai and various local and regional events. Aside from the martial arts future there’s also a change in focus for True Arena’s rooftop swimming pool. Lanes have been delineated so that swimming training as a very desirable form of exercise can be another feature of the already extensive exercise facilities and swimming lessons that are already a part of the BECC School program happening at True Arena. Football is also on the agenda with the ongoing development of a True Arena Football academy and rumours of a major overseas league being involved, but that’s another story that’s coming soon. From a surprisingly sexy electric coupe to a motorcycle with artificial intelligence, the 45th Tokyo Motor Show had something for any enthusiast interested in looking years into the future of cool mobility. Tokyo has turned itself into a techno-centric show. In addition, the Show, which ran until November 5th, showcased the latest concept offerings from Japan’s numerous manufacturers. Here are some of the best on offer from the show.

The Vision concept is an extension of the themes started by the RX-Vision concept two years ago, but it is grown and sexy in its own right. Mazda’s Kai is a very believable as what the next-generation Mazda 3 could look like. There is a deceptively long hood and rear-drive proportions, aggressive hunchback profile, and super clean body surfacing. Kai is the antidote to the busy bodywork of Mazda’s domestic rivals.

The Motoroid concept electric motorcycle has artificial intelligence that can recognize its owner via facial recognition (take that, bike thieves!) It can stand upright on its own without a kickstand and roll forward without its rider from a tightly packed parking space. The bike’s bodywork actively embraces the rider’s waist and chest, and its sensors quickly react to the motions of the rider. Lithium-ion batteries drive a rear-wheel hub motor.

Subaru has a knack of over-promising on design with concepts, only to then drastically under-deliver with the production version—the current WRX is the perfect example of that. Regardless, the Subaru Viziv Performance concept is just so cool. If the next-gen WRX retains even a portion of the Viziv Performance concept’s good looks, it will be in good shape.

Mitsubishi had the audacity to attach the Evo name to an electric vehicle, an SUV no less. Somehow this big-shouldered, tight-hipped, high-beltline, and shallowgreenhouse concept cuts through the clutter. It has one of the more dramatic floating roofs and looks strong and agile. Tech such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence are also destined for future models.

Daihatsu DN Compagno Concept

The coolest car in the show if you are looking for a groovy first car and live in an urban community with tight parking. Surging forward on its haunches like an energetic puppy, the DN Compagno concept has the face of a Volvo, the side profile and roofline of an Audi A3, and the back end like something out of Pininfarina’s 1965 catalog. One of the biggest hurdles electric cars have to tackle before they overtake internal combustion cars in the next decade is overcoming the stereotype of EVs being dorky to look at or uninspiring to drive. The low, wide, ’70s-inspired sheetmetal hides a battery pack and an electric motor, with the car’s proportions hinting at rear-wheel drive. Given how good to drive recent Hondas have been, the Sports EV appears promising.

The current Jimny is fast approaching its 20th birthday, and the Suzuki E-Survivor concept is a first official peek at what the next-gen Jimny could look like. Ignore the concept’s open cockpit and electric motors, because more importantly the E-Survivor shows that both dimensionally and visually, the next-gen Jimny hasn’t lost the plot.

The Tokyo Motor Show is where the wildest concepts see the light of day. This Cross Hub concept is based on a platform of two previous Yamaha concept cars. What’s crazy about the Cross Hub is the packaging and seating layout. Check out the diamond pattern seating configuration and cargo area just large enough to strap down an adult’s motocross bike (and child’s) on the diagonal. Funky? Cool? Yep.

OK, it’s not a coupe—it’s a four-door sedan. And it’s not Mazda’s normal fare because it is a full-size sedan. Mazda is not teasing a future large flagship sedan; it just wanted the proportions to show what its designers can do and the result is sexy, sinewy, and simply succulent. 30 Following an intrepid King

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) was an intrepid traveller, who had sailed over the western horizon to visit European capital cities that inspired him and also explored many places along our own Gulf of Thailand.

At Thansadet beach, on the then virgin island of Koh Phang-an for example, his ship used to called in at times for fresh water supply from the gushing waterfall there. There is a large royal sala built at the beach for his party to rest before his ship sailed further south to visit the Malay peninsula. Closer to Hua Hin and just south of Pranburi, at what is now Khao Sam Roi Yot (300-peak) National Park, the royal explorer around 1890 also climbed up to the Phraya Nakhon Cave, to no doubt marvel at the morning sun rays streaming down into the cave, as they still do now.

The royal sala here is the ornate Kuha Karuhas Pavilion that now gleams brightly in gold when it is bathed daily by the morning sun between 10.30 and 11.30 am. That heavenly sight, now made familiar in many tourist brochures, still takes some getting used to. It looks like a bit of our glittering royal history has floated gently down with the morning sun, through the large opening at the top of the cave, to land there for all to still enjoy. It’s a pleasant day’s outing from Hua Hin to follow in the steps of Rama V. Drive 60 kilometres south to that border of the national park on the main southern highway. Just south of Pranburi turn left towards beachside Ban Pu village, which is your launching place to the cave. Buy your national park tickets at the park’s little desk on the beach, then pay the 400-baht return fare for a small motor boat to take you around the headland south for a short distance to Hard Laem Sala beach which is the top eastern border of the marine national park. Those feeling more energetic can hike on the steep track over the headland hill for half an hour instead. Keep in mind the hike back to your car plus another steep and rocky half-hour climb to the cave itself still ahead. Wading in the surf off the boat onto the white sand of the beach, you have before you the temporary natural freedom of the largest marine national park in Thailand. It

has some 69 square kilometres of marsh land, making it also the largest wetlands in the country. Around 300 species of birds, half of them migratory ones, are protected here. It’s a real haven for bird-watchers, to observe the variety of birds flying from the northern Asian winter in January and February to the sun in Australia. Dusky leaf monkey, Malayan porcupine, crab-eating macaque, slow loris, fishing cat, Malayan pangolin, barking deer and dolphins also call this wilderness their home. So return visits are needed to properly lose yourselves in this fascinating natural place of wetlands and high peaks. No wonder many royal visitors and foreign naturalists loved to visit this park. On pristine Hard Laem Sala there are some basic national park cottages cottages to rent but renovation work was also being done to them. Take your time walking and sitting under the casuarina trees in the breeze of the deserted beach. One needs tranquility where one can find it. After the sweaty climb to the historic pavilion, following in the sprightly royal short strides, you can enjoy the sea vista of the return boat trip. Whale Watching Time at Chao Samran Beach

The Chao Samran Municipality in Phetchaburi and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are organising the 4th Whale Watching and Crab Eating Festival at the Chao Samran beach. At this time of the year the rare Bryde’s whales may be seen enjoying themselves hunting for food near the coast in the Ban Laem district of Phetchaburi Province. Bryde’s whales are often found near the coast to find food following fresh water run-off into the ocean. Adult and calf Bryde’s whales have been spotted in a pod by local fishermen. Whale watching boats can be hired which accommodate up to ten people. The fishermen who take tourists out to sea to watch the whales have been trained by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. Local fishing boats have stopped fishing and turn into tour boats to ferry tourists to have close encounter of the sea mammals. Sometimes up to 10 whales can be seen in a pod with whales snatching

anchovies into their mouth and flocks of gulls flying over the water to catch the fish that jump off the whale’s mouth. In addition, Irrawaddy dolphins may be seen as cute and colorful as a favourite of tourists.

A Bryde’s whale is approximately 13.7 metres to 14.5 metres long and weighs about 17 tonnes. In 2012, it was estimated that only 20 remained in the Gulf of Thailand. There are three main departure points for whale watching activities; Hat Chao Samran Pier, Laem Phak Bia Pier and Bangtaboon Pier. Every pier has the same facilities including life jackets. All travelers must be prepared with food, drinks, sun protection and any medicines. Boats typically leave at 08.30 am return to shore time between 3 and 4 PM. Booking 2-3 days in advance is advisable. Check the weather before departure as bad weather may result in cancellation. Of course there can be no guarantees that sightings will occur as the location of the whale, and whale sightings depend on weather, wind, feed of whales and also other environment al factors. 397 Kiteboarding in Hua Hin ‘Enjoying Life on a Windy Beach’

Kiteboarding gives a fantastic feeling of freedom. There’s no engine, the only thing you hear is the wind and the sound of your board cutting through the water. It’s ecofriendly as a water sport powered by the wind.

Like surfing, kiteboarding is a sport primarily enjoyed by individuals who don’t usually need competition or organised events. For them this is about selfexpression on the water and the satisfaction of joining with the elements in an environmentally way. The first kite school in Thailand was established in Hua Hin back in 2001. Since then Kiteboarding Asia (KBA) has opened many schools in Thailand and other parts of Asia. With almost 16 years’ experience, there isn’t much they haven’t learned so much about kiteboarding, teaching, and how to run the best kitesurfing services. This is by far the largest kiteboarding school and shop network in Asia. The head office remains in Hua Hin with three separate operations on controlled sections

Hua Hin is one of the best places to learn. The conditions couldn’t be better for beginners with lessons are the mainstay of KBA operations for newcomers progressing towards becoming a real kiteboarder year-round. Bookings for lessons (private, 1 day discovery and 3 day) are often made online, with free local transportation available. There is also a local club with equipment storage and ‘on the beach’ assistance available at all locations. A wide sandy beach, with shallow water and reliable wind conditions provides the best conditions for learning. The best conditions are from November to May, happily coinciding with the tourism high season. There have even been world championship kiteboarding competitions in Hua Hin going back to 2010. All nationalities are represented with a combination of rentals, sales and kiteboarder’s own equipment being used. There have been over 10,000 students over the years, including many who have gone on to make successful careers and continuing to embrace the sport. Materials are the backbone of Siam Old Teak design. Only the best are used: Burmese reclaimed teak, Italian Grade ‘A’ aniline leather, the finest of marble and granite; as well as a plethora of other materials, both modern and classical, used in interesting and ingenious ways. They don’t use any Rubberwood (also known as Parawood) Bamboo, MDF/Veneer in the manufacture of their furniture. These materials soon lose their showroom lustre and begin to show their age within a couple of years.

One thing that is clearly in evidence is Ya and Mark’s understanding of how to make a room comfortable. Their success lies in taking a mixture of traditional and contemporary elements, not forgetting their gorgeous neutrals, and creating a quietly glamorous, yet altogether cosy ambiance. It was exactly this mix of style and luxury that attracted the owners of the condo to Siam Old Teak. The clients wanted a cool, contemporary look which also needed to be comfortable and practical because they have three young boys. This transformation was easier said than done, given that the condo hadn’t been touched for over ten years. All the eight floors were replaced with beautiful reclaimed teak. Fortunately the existing layout was fine, so it was more a case of providing a totally new look and updating what was already there, a grande teak entrance door and interior doors were replaced to freshen the look of the clients home. All the bathrooms were gutted and new tiles fitted, new plumbing and beautiful custom made teak cabinets were set below granite tops. “The owners knew what they wanted, but didn’t know how to execute it” says Ya “They were very keen on taking part in the sourcing and decision-making, and they didn’t

The kitchen which was installed four years ago had been consumed by termites. Siam Old Teak installed a bespoke allteak kitchen with Italian marble work tops, all the handles and soft close hardware being sourced from Hafele. Expensive ? the same price that you would pay for a Rubber Wood, MDF/Veneered offering. The condo is very relaxed and elegant, it’s a wonderful beach house. Not showy at all, not a suit and tie experience, but still very smart indeed. Much of the furniture is free standing rather than fitted. Opulence is there but is very inconspicuous, and the overall look is super-elegant. This creates a very relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful natural fabrics, neutral colour schemes predominate in the main living space, progressing to subtle colour schemes in the bedrooms. The combination of old teak, leather and fabrics used is very successful and quite unique. The dining room has teak panelling, a very simple family dining set which leads out onto the deck, perfectly conceived for relaxed outdoor living. The clients home has a simple, elegant interior with clean lines. It has a timeless elegance, but with style and charm: low-key luxury at its ultimate, this is an intelligent interior without being too clever, and would appeal to families and the super-duper bachelor.

The 1st Young Thai Taekwondo Cup 2017 successfully ended on 4th November 2017 at Blúport, Hua Hin A total of 15 teams from Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Ayutthaya, Chanthaburi, Cha-Am, Hua Hin, and Pranburi had competed in this championship. In his first nine months as president of the United States, Donald Trump unofficially played 60 rounds of golf. Clearly, Trump, who sports a 2.8 Handicap, is not an average golfer. Trump may be controversial politically, but when it comes to golf, many experts agree — the 45th president really can play.

Barack Obama is another President not shy about professing his love for the game. During his eight years in the Oval Office, Obama averaged 38.25 rounds per year. That’s also a lot of golf, although Obama’s overall average is less than half of what Trump has played in his first year as president.

President Dwight W Eisenhower was in office from 1953-61 and managed to spend more than 1,000 days of his presidency playing golf or involved in some other golf-related activity. He had a handicap ranging from 14 to 18.

Καλή όρεξη! (Kalí óreksi!) at Hua Hin’s Greek Taverna

The Greek Taverna Is a small authentic Greek restaurant at the end of Naresdamri road (the Hilton road) decorated in the original colours of Greece; blue and white. This is an oasis in the city offering delicious original Greek dishes in a setting with the ambiance of the iconic Greek tavernas of Santorini. After being greeted by attentive waitresses with their traditional blue and white uniforms, the Manager Khun Thip, a lovely Thai lady with a big smile, offered a glass of traditional ouzo accompanied by pita bread and the famous tzatziki. She commented that this is the best way to start your dinner although an extensive wine menu is also available. When I asked her why a Greek restaurant in Hua Hin, she explained that her son-in- law Giorgos is Greek. He designed and built the restaurant around 4 years ago with a Greek cook who has trained the Thai staff. “All our dishes are homemade”, she said. “Proudly we use original ingredients, including olive oil, Greek feta, Greek yogurt and wine vinegar which are all imported. Fresh produce is collected every morning from the local market.”

The dinner to follow included moussaka (layered eggplant with a spiced meat filling and a topping of bechamel sauce), a hot plate of pikilia (a selection of pork and chicken),

souvlaki with biftek (feta sealed between two seasoned ground beef patties). This was served with homemade potatoes, a real Greek salad with feta and olives. Next a real surprise was whole Canadian lobster stuffed with risotto rice presented by; Executive Chef Sidtiporn. He is a recent arival from a Mediterranean restaurant in Phuket and is adding his personal touch with a number of select menu items. The taste of the food, the Greek atmosphere and the sound of Greek music brought back memories from when I was young and the rows of Greek tavernas along the small colorful streets of Santorini in Greece. If you are ever in Greece and you really want to taste original Greek dishes that is defiantly the place to go. For those who cannot visit Greece, The Greek Taverna in Hua Hin is the place to go so that you can understand why Greek hospitality and food is so famous around the world. Please note; Καλή όρεξη! Method

Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add green cardamoms, cloves and cinnamon and sauté for half a minute., Add onions and sauté till golden brown. Add Lamb leg and sauté on high heat for five minutes. Add garlic paste and sauté for two minutes., Add yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and coriander powder and cook for two minutes, stirring continuously Add tomato puree and green chili and stir., Add six to seven cups water and bring to a boil. Close the lid and cook under pressure until the pressure is released five to six times (5-6 whistles)., Open the lid when the pressure is reduced completely. Add garam masala powder, crushed peppercorns, coriander leaves and mint leaves and cook for a few minutes or till most of the water is absorbed. Serve hot with Biryani rice.
