July is a month during the so called ‘low season’. This often-used term is certainly not encouraging to those who may be interested in visiting our region during this time of the year.

The months from June to October are also called the ‘wet season’; again not a welcoming description. In reality we are in the driest region of Thailand; historically rainy days are not a big issue with holiday plans rarely disrupted or ‘rained out’. Apart from the unfortunate ‘low’ or ‘wet’ labels; there are other marketing issues for our region including the absence of a unique identity or ‘brand’. Confusion often follows when Cha-Am locations are described being in Hua Hin. Despite these two Districts being in different Provinces, they enjoy similar attributes; sharing resorts, cultural attractions, beaches and even golf courses. Many businesses say that our region deserves a more coordinated marketing approach to promote the coastal strip between Cha-Am and Pranburi (or further south) as one ‘brand’ with one identity. These businesses also rue the absence of direct air transport to our region. Finally events are often staged without coordination and timely promotion. Prospective overseas visitors have no chance to organise their trips and even the locals may be uninformed. Too many times the media, including Hua Hin Today, is not advised what is happening until it is too late for adequate promotion, if at all. To ‘hide your light under a bushel’ is an expression which means keeping desirable qualities (or happenings) a secret from others. That’s an expression which unfortunately applies to our region. We have all the attractions to be at the forefront of Thailand tourism, but the enthusiasm of local entrepreneurs is not enough. A bigger picture marketing plan is essential to end our region’s seasonal blues.

Now in its 10th year, Google Street View Covers All 77 Provinces in Thailand It has already been 10 years since Google Street View, a 360-degree map of the world, was first introduced. Google Street View car officially hit the road in 2006 and the first imaginary was published on Google Street View in May 2007.
Gathering Google Street View images in Thailand Look out for the Google Street View mobile cameras Today Google Street View provides panoramic views of every continent in 83 countries, covering about 10 million miles of the world. Google Street View made its official debut in Thailand in September 2011 and has started accumulating images of places around the country since. Six months after the debut, images of the first three provinces - Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai - were published on Google Street View. In August 2016, Google Street View cars and Street View Trekker team completed capturing all corners of Thailand’s 77 provinces. The most recent images around Hua Hin are dated 24th January 2017.
Last year, Google introduced Google Indoor Street View that allows users to explore indoor locations. At first, it could be used at department stores in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Today, users can access Indoor Street View for 15 department stores. Over the past six years of its operation in Thailand, Google Street View team has collaborated with various organizations to photograph roads, streets and tourist attractions around Thailand, enabling people from all over the world to explore and admire amazing places in the country through mobile devices and PCs. 4 Thailand International Airports Big Potential Limited by Capacity Phuket airport has a capacity of 8 million per year, but 14.7 million were crammed in the same fiscal year. A total of 34.7 million passengers were squeezed through Don Muang, against the airport’s 30 million designed capacity. Chiang Mai handled 9.2 million passengers in the year compared to its capacity of 8 million a year. Hat Yai is also facing a similar situation, with 3.87 million passengers passing through it in the year, surpassing its capacity of 2.5 million.
Push for Hua Hin Airport Revamp Hotel operators in Hua Hin and Cha-Am have urged the government to speed up a revamp of the existing airport to develop better links to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China and India. The idea was to strengthen tourism competitiveness in the area and facilitate airlines, especially budget carriers wishing to add direct flights from major cities in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia to the Hua Hin Airport. Tourism in Hua Hin and Cha-am has been increasing over the past decade. The region is a family destination for Thai tourists, a wellness destination for folks from Myanmar and a wedding and honeymoon location for the Indian and Middle Eastern markets. “If the Hua Hin Airport gets expanded and promoted as an international airport, more tourists will come to the area,” said Udom Srimahachota, vice-president of the Thai Hotels Association (THA) Western chapter.
Phuket Airport is under pressure

Thailand’s success in attracting huge numbers of tourists has put some infrastructure for handling the influx under pressure, according to Kiatipong Ariyapruchya, an economist with the World Bank. “Bottlenecks are building up in destinations like Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket, while infrastructure still hasn’t expanded.”
The expansion of the Suvarnabhumi airport, which includes the construction of a third runway and a second passenger terminal, together expects to cost over 110 billion THB will not be entirely completed until four years. When the work is completed in 2021, the annual passenger handling capacity will be raised to 90 million. Don Muang’s next stage of works to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 40 million from 30 million is not expected to be operational before 2022.
The Hua Hin Airport is owned and operated by the Civil Aviation Department, with a short runway that can accommodate only small aircraft. The airport is attracting a number of private jets to serve an increasing amount of upmarket resorts nearby.
Meanwhile major airlines in the Middle East are ready to offer attractive deals to draw more tourists to Thailand from October this year after signing agreements with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is teaming up with United Arab Emirates carriers Etihad, Emirates, Fly Dubai, and Qatar Airways to boost the arrival numbers from the Middle East by 13-15% this year, up from 585,633 last year, which had 10% growth. Additionally Thailand is seeking to take on Singapore’s dominance in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul. This would be based at U-Tapao Airport which has seen a continuous growth rate over the past few years. U-Tapao airport, sometimes known locally as Pattaya airport, has some big development plans for the future.

U-Tapao expansion plans U-Tapao has seen the quadrupling of passenger numbers year on year and the increased frequency of domestic and international flights, which has stretched the airport’s existing capacity to the very limit. At the beginning of 2016, U-Tapao had approximately 800,000 passengers. An expansion plan includes 49 new bays as well as two new aviation bridges. When these alterations are in place it will mean the capacity of the U-Tapao will rise to around 3 million passengers.
“The cost of traveling to Hua Hin and Cha-am is 30% lower than other destinations like Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui,” Mr Udom said. “Tourists are happy with the prices, but the problem is there is no direct connection from their homes.” Christian Wurm, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Hua Hin and the Barai, said an international airport in Hua Hin would give a tremendous boost to the local economy, ranging from hotels, restaurants and golf courses to tourism-related activities. “Tourists from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea will find their journey time to Hua Hin is halved with a new airport,” said Mr Wurm.

Volunteers during a ‘pit-stop’ en route The Jungle Aid Foundation has been making a difference to communities on the Thai/Myanmar border for over eight years. This organisation is made up of passionate and determined volunteers. They’re problem-solvers, doctors, nurses and creative thinkers who provide aid to those in less fortunate circumstances for a brighter future. Emma Neve is the founder of Jungle Aid and is the Chair of the Board and Jungle Aid’s Chief Executive. Emma is a British nurse, a professional health visitor and the founder and Managing Director of an international school in Hua Hin.
A community needs assessment to enable the providing of essential supplies for village people. Jungle Aid has just announced a project that has taken over a year to develop and to receive the necessary backing of local authorities. The Foundation now has permission to build a well at the Pala U Noi village to provide water for over 200 people. Pala U Noi is just one of the villages supported by Jungle Aid. This community has around 40 houses with 200 people living on about 500 Rai of Thai Government National Forest in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Jungle Aid has been actively supporting Pala U Noi for over 8 years and treated over 450 patients at this location.

Completion of this project will be life changing and provide the community with an essential requirement for a better future that we may take for granted; clean water. This will include a survey and well drilling, well construction, installation of solar powered pumps plus the survey and construction of a water pipe network. This is an ambitious plan with a total projected expenditure of almost 1.3 million THB. Support for the venture is a great opportunity for sponsorship, now being actively canvassed. Fund Raising Jungle Aid is always dependent upon many unsung, generous and involved supporters and is without any other source of income. Some of the main fund-raising activities have involved the annual Centara World Masters Golf Championship, Det 5 (a fund-raising venue in Bangkok) and Stenden Rangsit University in Bangkok through the ‘Universities Fighting World Hunger’ movement. Jungle Aid has dedicated sponsors from all over the world who donate private funds when projects need support.
Medical assistance may require these people to walk for one or two days. The elderly or mothers with children make such journeys when they hear that treatment will be available. Additional to emergency healthcare, educational opportunities for children and a regular food supply are also supported. As requests for assistance are received, Jungle Aid endeavours to meet them, albeit with limited resources.
Getting to and from remote villages poses a challenge to both villagers and Jungle Aid volunteers The village communities that are the focus of Jungle Aid’s work are largely made up of displaced people of mixed nationalities. Some are Thai citizens but many have an insecure residency status. Jungle Aid does not discriminate on any grounds; providing support irrespective of race, religion, ethnic background and residency status supporting these communities through regular visits. Assistance has included the training of a village nurse and health promotion activities about malaria, burn treatment, dental care and intestinal worms. Common illnesses have required various antibiotic, fungal, skin treatment, open wound and anti-diarrhea medications. The open air ‘clinic’ also receives many requests for birth control pills. Village children are supported to attend school and provided with school supplies and sporting equipment. Jungle aid also supports local Thai families with severe sickness or poverty with medical assistance, food or equipment to improve their quality of life even though some may be living with a terminal illness.
There has also been financial assistance or goods such as medical supplies and personal requisites from a wide range of Hua Hin supporters including hotels and resorts, sporting bodies, service clubs and private individuals. How to be involved Jungle Aid is made up entirely of dedicated volunteers. In addition to the core team there is an extended network of volunteers who help out with a whole range of activities. This includes joining jungle treks, helping fundraise, in the medical sphere, sorting donated goods or taking care of administrative requirements. Whatever skills you would like to share can be put to great use; particularly people who are able to volunteer on a long term basis. Committed volunteers have a huge impact and help so many people. Even a single hour a week can make a big difference. Jungle Aid also has a volunteer webmaster ensuring their website provides all the information you may need and informing you about funding events and opportunities; your involvement is easy.

8 His Name is Bertrand; But Call Him Khun Bee! Putahracsa Hua Hin’s General Manager
When first meeting Bertrand Margerie, the General Manager of the Putahracsa Hua Hin, I looked at his business card and foolishly stated the obvious, “your name sounds very French”. In perfect English with a slight French accent, he affirmed his nationality with a wry smile. Although extensive experiences in many different countries suggest that he’s really a citizen of the world. Before our second meeting, the Putahracsa receptionist referred to Bertrand as ‘Khun Bee’. She was a little embarrassed to admit that she had struggled with a correct pronunciation. This should be with a silent ‘D’; sounding more like ‘Bertron’. Bertrand accepts that he is now ‘Khun Bee’ in Hua Hin but he doesn’t mind.
Bertrand has been the Putahracsa General Manager since March this year. This is his first appointment to an independent ‘boutique’ resort although his résumé (note the French accents!) includes stints with global companies such as the InterContinental and the Mövenpick Groups. His 30 year management career with superior hotels and resorts has included management positions in Europe, Africa, the Middle East as well as South-east Asia. Just prior to joining the Putahracsa, Bertrand took a ‘sabbatical’ from the hospitality industry for almost two years to take on a consultancy role with Green Footprint Solutions in Bangkok, a company specialising in bringing to market green technologies. The green credentials of the Putahracsa are now assured with this GM’s practical experience and knowledge. One of the advantages of a resort with individual Thai owners rather than a broad corporate structure is the ability to get things done and make improvements in a timely manner. One example is Bertrand’s favourite spaces at the Putahracsa; the Ob-Oon Deli which was given a makeover last December. This became an enclosed space but retaining open areas and extensive natural lighting from floor to ceiling windows and translucent roofing. All the benefits of shelter and airconditioning but without feeling enclosed. This is a very pleasant and welcoming place for long conversations as we discovered during our time with Bertrand.

Bertrand’s Thailand experiences included early Hua Hin visits some 20 years ago. At that time he was travelling as a ‘backpacker’. After an early visit he travelling across Thailand but was drawn back to Hua Hin as his favourite location to experience Thai culture but without leaving behind ‘creature comforts’.
The expansive interior of a re-vamped Ob-Ooon Deli It goes without saying that Hua Hin bears little resemblance to the undeveloped town of the past, but Bertrand still believes this is the best place in Thailand for those experiences. However Bertrand is joining the throng of local entrepreneurs, especially those in the hospitality industry, who are concerned that a visible marketing plan for ‘Brand Hua Hin’ may be missing and that infrastructure needs, including direct access for overseas visitors to the airport, pose limitations to the region’s potential tourism growth. ‘Khun Bee’ has now had time to better know the Hua Hin hospitality scene. His next step will be to better know other General Managers and support the push for Hua Hin to be fully recognised as a destination on the world tourism map. Our thanks to Bertrand for his valuable time; we support his vision for tomorrow’s Hua Hin.

Electrical Car Recharging Stations Now Open in Hua Hin
Resolving Wild Monkeys Problems Due to the problem of monkeys troubling people in Hua Hin, especially in the areas of Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, Khao Takiab Buddhist Temple and Hin Lek Fai Hill, the Hua Hin Municipality, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department and Department of Livestock Development will provide sterilisation for the monkeys and install containment cages in the areas concerned. According to the Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Ms. Bussaba Chokesuchart, 2,000 wild monkeys roaming around the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course and Hin Lek Fai Hill are stealing food from tourists and nearby restaurants as well as damaging local houses.
The Governor of Prachuab Khirikhan, the Director General of Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister of Thailand have officiated at the opening of four new energy recharging stations for electrical cars along the route of BangkokHua Hin. According to the Governor of Prachuab Khirikhan Dr. Thawee Narissirikul, the energy recharging stations are exclusively for electrically powered cars. The stations, located in the premise of PEA offices from Bangkok to Hua Hin, will strictly follow standards formulated in Europe and Japan. New electrical cars, consuming electricity instead of gasoline and can be recharged at any time. Drivers can stop by one of the stations and recharge their vehicle in 20 minutes – the charging period which enables the car to go on for additional one hundred kilometres. Until the end of 2017, the stations will provide free service from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. There will be PEA staff available to give visitors assistance.
Opening of the new car recharging stations is one of many Thai government’s projects towards Thailand 4.0 which promotes new technology and innovations, especially alternative energy to replace gasoline. The electrical car exemplify a project expected to be effective in the future when the world needs a new kind of energy to reduce the use of gasoline and solve environmental problems at the same time. Apart from the four car recharging stations from Bangkok to Hua Hin, there are two more from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, three stations available along the BangkokPattaya route, one in Nakhon Pathom and one at the head office of PEA. By the end of this year, more stations will have been established in the north, south and northeast of Thailand.
The Hua Hin municipal office has erected signs in Thai and English with a message asking people not to give any food to the monkeys. However, while some people follow the instruction, others still leave food, fruit and drink for monkeys resulting in them continuing to be a problem. As the Khao Takiab Buddhist Temple does not give anything to the monkeys, the animals are seen at hotels and restaurants nearby. Some of them have been found at the ferry pier.

The plan for monkey control, including a budget will be proposed by the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department for approval by the Hua Hin Municipality as an urgent project to be carried out this fiscal year. If successful, it will be continued in following years. Municipal officers said that they were confident the plan will be effective as it had already been successful in other areas. In the future, some monkey containment will be installed at the Khao Takiab Buddhist Temple where visitors can also give food to the animals. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, along with the Deputy Mayor and members of the Hua Hin Municipal Council has visited Khao Takiab to help survey the number of the monkeys troubling people. He said that he would soon report about progress to resolve the problem himself.
After a meeting of the concerned authorities, around 600 monkeys from the golf course and Khao Takiab will be put into containment areas at Hin Lek Fai Hill. Staff of the Department of Livestock Development will sterilise them and provide daily food and drink. Hin Lek Fai Hill is an ideal tourist attraction
Dr. Thawee commented that Hua Hin was the gateway to Prachuab Khirikhan where both Thais and foreigners like to visit and stay. Many visitors come to Hua Hin by car. 10 Insurance for Drink Driving Ends
Drink-drivers with blood-alcohol concentrations of 50 mg/dL and over will have to pay for any damages they cause as they will no longer be covered by insurance firms, the Office of the Insurance Commission has warned. Gazette, reducing the limit to only 20 mg/ dL for some groups of drivers. Drivers aged 20 and below, and those with only a temporary driving licence or without a valid licence will be regarded as drink-drivers if their blood-alcohol level is measured above 20 mg/dL. – Bangkok Post From Police Traffic Chief, Ekkarat Plaidoung: “In Thailand, the standard Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is set at 0.05 per cent, which means you are legal if there is no more than 50 mg/ dl of blood, which can be tested through both blood or breathalizer test. In normal circumstances, 50 mg/dl means about two glasses of beer, so in general, you should try not to go above this.” OIC secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn said the conditions in insurance policies have changed to come in line with the Road Traffic Act, with the alcohol limit coming down to 50 mg/ dL, from 150 mg/dL allowed by insurance companies previously. “Drink-drivers should avoid driving. The insurance will not cover either life or property in the event an accident occurs
and it is found the insured driver has a blood-alcohol concentration of over 50 mg/dL. “The third party damaged by the person will still be covered but the insurance company will collect the money from the drink-driver,” he said. However, the insurance void is only for additional policy, not compulsory insurance according to the Road Accident Victims Protection Act 1992, he said.

Despite its medicinal benefits especially for severe pain management, marijuana is known to be one of the most abused drugs in the world, giving a euphoric high, and even delusions and hallucinations if smoked too much. province, said marijuana has been in Thailand for hundreds of years and is even mentioned in ancient Thai literature like Khun Chang Khun Paen. What the country needs when it comes to medical cannabis legalisation is proper management.
The unwanted psychoactive side effects of the drug make it divisive, particularly when it comes to marijuana legalisation, not just here in Thailand but across the globe. Cannabis is prohibited in Thailand under the Narcotics Act of 1979 and classed as a Category 5 narcotic. According the law in Thailand producers, exporters and importers are liable for imprisonment of between two and fifteen years and/or a fine of 200,000 to 1.5 million THB, as are those found in possession of over 10 kg with intent to supply. Possession with intent to supply of 10 kg or less may incur prison sentences of two to ten years and/or a fine of 40,000 to 200,000 THB. Simple possession is punishable by a maximum of five years imprisonment and/ or a fine of up to 100,000 THB.

Hemp Production Thailand exports small quantities of hemp clothing, and is currently one of the world’s leading suppliers of hemp, which is indigenous to the northern parts of the country. Cannabis plants for hemp production Earlier this year the cabinet has approved, as proposed by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, farmers to grow industrial hemp, or Cannabis sativa – the herbaceous plant of the same family as marijuana, or Cannabis indica – across 15 districts of six provinces namely Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Tak, Phetchabun and Mae Hong Son.
“Thailand is moving at a very slow pace when it comes to the decriminalisation of medical marijuana,” she said. “Weed has been part of Thai people’s lives since the old days. And we should not have looked at it as a mere narcotic drug. We should instead learn how to handle and properly control the use of it in a way that we can also benefit from it. The world has long awoken to the medicinal benefits of this plant.”
Raw materials processed from hemp can be used for the manufacturing of clothes, bulletproof vests, building materials, food supplements, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

So if the medical use of it is finally allowed and encouraged, we will be able to significantly reduce the production cost in the long run. Thailand already has perfect weather and terrain. Israel – One of the leading countries with medical marijuana research, Israel’s government announced in 2016 plans to make medical cannabis prescriptions available for patients through pharmacies across the nation. Italy – Italy allowed medical marijuana in 2013. Switzerland – Since 2011 cannabis can be sold and consumed legally. The Netherlands – The country started allowing medical cannabis products to be sold at pharmacies to patients with a doctor’s prescription in 2003. 11 Asaha Bucha & Tourists Asked to Wear ‘Polite Clothing’ and Avoid Bangkok Khao Pansa Important Buddhist Commemorations During the Royal Cremation
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is preparing to ask foreign tourists to wear appropriate clothing during the royal cremation ceremony of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, to be held between October 25th-29th.
Foreign tourists are also being advised to travel outside Bangkok during the royal cremation ceremony to avoid traffic congestion. October 26th has been declared a public holiday.
Tourism businesses reportedly want the government to announce its tourism policies for the period in detail so that they can manage their services appropriately. It is feared that a delay in the announcement could make some tourists reluctant to travel to the country. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will release an official travel advisory for foreigners coming to Thailand to inform them about the royal cremation, according to the Thai National News Bureau.
Wan Asaha Bucha and Wan Khao Punsa are very important Thai Buddhist holidays in July. This year Wan Asaha Bucha is on Saturday 8th July and Wan Khao Punsa on Tuesday 11th July. Many businesses, government offices, schools and the like will be closed. There will be restrictions on alcohol sales as well. There will be many activities around the temples, predominantly listening to sermons, making merit and feeding of monks. Wan Asana Bucha Wan Asaha Bucha commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park at Benares (Varanasi) in India. In this sermon, known as Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion, the Buddha first spelled out the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. This day is also regarded as the founding day of the Buddhist sangha (monkhood). Many Thai people will return to their ancestral homes to worship in their local temple and to bring offerings for the monks. In the evening they will often perform a wian tian, where they walk clockwise around the main shrine of the temple carrying a candle, three incense sticks and a lotus bed. During the day, monks chant mantras or repeat the first sermon of the Buddha. Wan Khao Punsa Wan Khao Punsameans the day of entering the rains retreat. This is a three-month
annual retreat usually undertaken from July to October, during which monks must stay at the same temple, and refrain from wandering around the countryside. In India, it is known as Vassa. It begins on the day after Asaha Bucha. The tradition dates from the time of the Buddha, when he forbade monks to travel during the rainy season for fear that they might unintentionally harm crops or insects in the places where they walked. The Rains Retreat in Thailand In Thailand, monks use the retreat to meditate more intensively. Lay people will often use this period to adopt more ascetic practices, abstaining from meat, alcohol or cigarettes, for example. Wan Khao Punsa is often referred to as Buddhist Lent, with an emphasis on reflection and self-denial.It is also a time when many young Thai men ordain and join the monkhood for part or all of the period of the rains retreat. Royal Birthday July 28th is his Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday, it has been announced that 5th December will remain father’s day, and that 28th July will be a national holiday. This year His Majesty turns 65 years of age however few public events have been reported to date.
Hua Hin Launches the ‘3 R’s Waste Management Program The Hua Hin Municipality is responsible for 39 local communities within the Districts of Hua Hin and Nong Kae and over 60,000 people. The amount of waste from these communities averages 150 tons per day with costs of almost 5 million THB per month for waste disposal. With the number of local people and visitors increasing, waste disposal problems are becoming a major concern for municipal authorities as they affect both the environment and the lifestyle of people. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, the Deputy Mayor and the Permanent Secretary of the Municipality have opened a new waste management program, initiated by the Division of Public Health and Environment, to address these concerns and to establish more effective and sustainable waste management.
The 3R’s needs the cooperation of household, temples and schools in Hua Hin as the main source of waste. The program compliments the Provincial strategy to enhance the effectiveness of environmental management, aiming for a zero waste zone and a better quality of life for everyone.

Officials will seek their cooperation to wear “polite clothing” to share their condolences with Thai people countrywide, said TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn. Thirty-six TAT domestic branches and 25 overseas offices have been instructed to plan for tourists to attend the ceremony and inform travelers of the schedule, he said. The royal cremation will be held at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, so tourism in other areas will continue as usual, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said. She says many foreign tourists understand Thai culture and the atmosphere of mourning will not affect their plans to come to Thailand.
Royal Palace staff do not allow vests, sleeveless tops, shorts, see-through clothing, shorts above the knee skirts, slippers, sandals or flip-flops. The Tourism and Sports Minister said that in order to avoid traffic congestion, foreign visitors are advised to stay outside of Bangkok during the cremation period. Information on tourist attractions outside the capital will be included in the advisory, she said. Water Tanks in Hua Hin Needed a Big Clean
A professional diver team has removed sediment found in water tanks at Khao Lang, part of the Hua Na Water Plant Mr. Atichart Chaisri, the Secretary to the Mayor of Hua Hin, had asked the professional divers to check the water tanks after complaints about murky and unclear water. Many were found to have sediment of as high as 2 metres. The divers spent 3 days cleaning the water tanks using an underwater vacuum cleaner to suck the sediment out of water.
Water released from the Water Plant to the areas of Bon Kai and Khao Pitak now looks clearer and cleaner. The water problem started in April and authorities then visited all water plants in the city and found sediment in the water tanks. The work was completed at the water plants in Hua Na – Nong Kae and will continue at Rai Nun, Damnern Kasem and other water plants throughout the city. Mr. Atichart added that some water plants had not been cleared of sediment for years. Sediment lies at the bottom of the tanks had caused water to be unclear and look red. He also said that asking professional divers to clean the water tanks was an effective problem solution as previously, staff of the Division of Water Works at Hua Hin Municipality had been unable to solve it properly. The Water Works Division is asking its staff to conduct a survey to ask local people if they are satisfied with the quality of their tap water. The result of the survey will be presented to next meeting of the municipal executive. Owning large fishing boats in Maha Chai, Mr. Atichart said the idea of using professional divers to clean the water tanks had emerged from his business. The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, along with executive members of the municipal office and council have attended a Buddhist ceremony to lay a foundation stone on the 7th floor of a new parking station for the Hua Hin Municipality.
The new parking lot is under construction next to the municipal offices, with 7 floors and an area of around 10,000 square metres for up to 200 cars. The building is equipped with elevators and modern electrical systems.
The ceremony was held according to traditional customs that to ensure that the construction will be trouble free and that future users will have prosperity in life.
Construction of the new parking lot started in December 2016 and is expected to complete by 6 July 2018. It will be available for both municipal officers and the public.

Bangkok: China Town, Khao San Road to Become Organised Street Food Areas The government is planning to transform Bangkok’s China Town and Khao San Road into well-organised areas for street food vendors.
“We will allow street stalls, as long as they comply with our regulations on zoning, stall designs, green packaging and hygienic standards,” Second Lieutenant Pornchanok Amphan, a spokeswoman for the Defence Ministry, said at a press conference.

How many of you started your day off by saying; “I didn’t get enough sleep. I want to sleep more?” We think many of you are familiar with the feeling. But do you know whether these feelings mean something? What are the possible diseases indicated by such symptoms? Excessive sleepiness is an abnormality. Those with such symptoms find it very hard to get up. When they do wake up, they would constantly feel like going back to sleep and that they never get enough sleep. These people get sleepy during the day and many times may fall asleep at an inappropriate time. In addition, lack of sleep may also cause them to be irritable, anxious, dull and depressed, or even to have memory problems. Excessive sleepiness is usually caused by the following three events, which involve getting poor-quality sleep or insufficient sleep. The first event is the accumulation of insufficient sleep. This is usually the case with people who often sleep late, work until late, are stressed or suffer from insomnia.. The second event is when your body clock or your biological clock stays in sleep mode, giving you an urge to sleep all the time. This is often the case for those who often travel oversea.
The third event is the malfunction of brain mechanisms that control sleep, such as narcolepsy, that give you excessive daytime sleepiness while being awake at night. Aside from these three events, excessive sleepiness may also arise from another physical ailment; such as diabetes, anaemia, stomach ulcers, ulcers in other body parts and even hypersomnia. Getting insufficient or over-sufficient sleep can both affect your health. Getting an appropriate amount of sleep is vital in keeping you healthy. How many hours of sleep are considered appropriate? Typically 6-8 hours of sleep is enough, however this varies depending on the age and activities that each person performs during the day. 18 To Bike or Not To Bike; That is the Question
Most readers will have seen or heard about the horrific statistics related to vehicle crashes and particularly motorbike crashes in Thailand. Too many Thai people and foreigners are the daily victims of injury and death. However riding a motorbike is also recognised as the most convenient, inexpensive and pleasurable means of transport. Riding in the rain adds to risks and should be avoided. If you are caught in the rain, pull over and take a real ‘rain check’.
The problem is that very few of us will make the sensible decision to leave the bike behind and find another way home, that’s part of losing common sense. The only way out is to plan and decide to leave the bike at home before heading for the bar or party. 4. Speeding - ‘Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly.’ The only place you will get to fast by speeding on Thai roads is to hospital. That includes meandering along narrow lanes, past vehicles with doors destined to open just as you draw level or through intersections where everyone but you has right of way.
‘Wind therapy; only motorbike riders know why a dog puts its head out the car window.’ Eventually many visitors, particularly those who stay for more than a holiday, will decide that riding a motorbike is the ‘way to go’. If it’s not for those romantic notions of freedom on the open road, it’s recognition that a motorbike is probably the easiest and quickest way to get around town. To legally drive a motor bike in Thailand, you need to have either an international licence or a Thai driving licence for that class of vehicle. Needless to say many don’t have this prerequisite and drive illegally for years. However this is likely to jeopardise any insurances apart from risking police attention. So if you’ve decided to join the two-wheeled set, here are some thoughts on how to avoid becoming a statistic.
The early days - ‘well-trained reflexes are better than luck.’
If you are inexperienced get some ‘street time’ near to home before venturing out and joining mainstream traffic.
Riding in the rain is not fun! Some bikes will still start and allow you to drive off with the stand remaining down. With a left side stand, the first time your bike leans in that direction (turning left) the stand will contact the ground. Get into a routine of raising the stand before starting the bike to avoid this ‘whoops’ factor.
Don’t try to keep up with Kamikaze teenagers riding mobile chain saws. Just keep calm, slow and steady on the highway with a maximum of something like 70 - 80 KPH and 40 KPH around town. You’ll arrive 2 minutes later but relaxed and in one piece. 5. Traffic Rules - ‘Expect the unexpected.’
Unlike a car, indicators don’t self-cancel. Frequently check (press the cancel button) as you travel and you will be surprised how often you have forgotten. Know Your Limits. If you don’t feel confident you probably shouldn’t be in a situation where there is heavy traffic or on a main road. Travel slowly! It’s not a race; just a form of transport. Don’t think that being passed by others is an insult or a threat to your ego.
Riding Rules Absolutely No. 1 Crash Hats - ‘Got a 100 THB head? Get a 100 THB helmet.’ It doesn’t matter if a helmet is hot, uncomfortable (it shouldn’t be), unfashionable or just plain ugly; always wear it! Not because it’s a legal requirement but because it’s for your necessary protection.
The rules of the road that you know back in Europe, Australia or the Americas are not the rules of the road in Thailand. Once you accept that as a given and stop trying to apply your driving attitudes to Thai traffic patterns, things get much easier. Motorcycles should stay in the left lane, but of course they don’t. They don’t even stay on the left side of the road and may head towards oncoming traffic. You should keep to the rules but expect others to make their own. Mystery Signalling (or non-signalling) by all sorts of vehicles is at best confusing. You must know that the vehicle is going to turn in the direction of the signal, don’t just trust the signal. Your own signals may be ignored if you are turning off a road. Don’t be surprised if that zooming bike behind passes on the left just as you are about to turn.

You should also be aware that bike indicators don’t selfcancel. Regularly check that you have turned off your indicators so that you are not guilty of being a mystery signaller yourself.
Don’t take passengers until you are at ease with your own abilities, including making sharp turns. A passenger, especially if he/she is not used to ring on a motorbike, may affect the bike’s stability.
WHAT IF? - ‘Accidents hurt - Safety doesn’t.’
We’ve all seen bikes with multiple passengers (mum, dad and the kids) but they’ve grown up riding a bike almost as soon as they could walk, that’s not you!
Don’t join in local bad habits Imagine that your skull is an eggshell, very fragile and very hard to mend. Even very low speed spills can be fatal without this essential shield. This rule is absolute and should never be broken even if it’s a two minute trip to the local 711. A helmet (or two) should be a part of any rental deal.

Be Confident but Wary - ‘Calling upon my years of experience, I froze at the controls.’ Stirling Moss Driving safely on Thai roads doesn’t depend on split-second reflexes but on observation and avoidance. A jittery tense driver can focus too much on the obvious and miss the unexpected, or vice versa. The whole point of a roving gaze and a relaxed driving mind set is to avoid getting to the point where split-second decisions are necessary.
Stick to riding in daylight hours. At night hazards are not so apparent and it’s not unusual for vehicles to be without lights as well as pedestrians and dogs wandering across the road. Check that your lights are all working and know that the missing headlights or taillights of others are a frequent reality.
You should be constantly checking rear vision mirrors but also being aware of anything potentially mobile that may suddenly dart out into your path. You need to be constantly aware and vigilant.

If an accident happens, first of all stay cool, anger doesn’t work in Thailand. If it’s serious enough to involve the Police wait calmly until they arrive. The best thing to do is to remain quiet and explain to the Police Officer what happened. Perhaps get on the phone for some support. However don’t be surprised if the ‘ruling’ about right or wrong doesn’t go in your favour, after all it wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t there! Don’t make any rash decisions or admissions until you’ve had the chance to reflect, get good advice, talked to your insurance provider or visited a lawyer if necessary. Don’t be talked into going anywhere but the nearest government hospital if you don’t have the means to foot a heavy medical bill.
Allowing for the passage of an oncoming motorbike only to collide with an unlit sidecar is one trap for the unprepared.

A Final Comment For many the advantages of riding a motor bike outweigh the dangers and risks. That’s a decision that up to you but it’s not compulsory and not for everyone. If that’s the way you want to go, think about how to manage your safety and never be complacent, that’s when problems occur. July 28th is His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday. It has been announced that this year 5th December will remain Father’s Day, and that 28th July will be also be a national holiday. With the passing of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, now known as Rama X became the oldest Thai monarch to ascend to the throne at the age of 64. This year His Majesty turns 65 years of age. The king’s coronation will take place after his father’s cremation, set for October 26th. The Thailand Post Company will showcase the first stamp featuring His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn on the occasion of his birthday.

Preparations for the Royal Cremation
The Fine Arts Department has booked some 3,000 performers in preparation for performances to take place as part of the royal cremation ceremony for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat said the Fine Arts Department was assigned by the government to organise the performances as part of the royal cremation ceremony, according to royal customs. Three performances will take place at the northern part of Sanam Luang Royal Plaza, namely the shadow puppet and traditional Khon performance telling the story of Ramayana epic where 1,420 performers will participate; a puppet show performed by 422 performers telling the story of Phra Mahachanaka, Enau, and Manora; and a musical performance of the late king’s compositions, honoring songs, and songs of condolences to be performed by 942 performers.
Meanwhile construction of the royal funeral pyre and its surrounding pavilions is more than 50% complete, according to Traditional Arts officials. Another set of Khon performance by 300 performers will take place in front of the royal pavilion. All performances will take place from 6.00 p.m. until 6.00 a.m. in the morning.
The team has also finished with painting the statues of eight sitting deities and 12 standing deities and is in the process of attaching clothing and accessories. As for the animal statues, the team has finished sculpting two north-facing elephants, painting the west-facing horses and southfacing cows, and is in the process of printing in silicon the east-facing lions.
Rehearsals for Khon performances will take place on 1620 October 2017 at Salaya Performing Arts School in Nakhon Pathom. National artists and folk artists are given the opportunity to express their loyalty by joining the performances.
The officials have finished building the funeral pyre’s framework on all nine four-post thrones, as well as the flooring, and stairways. They are currently in the process of installing surfaces and architectural elements on the first, second, and third platforms. The architectural team is working to scale up their model of the four-post thrones, before various pieces can enter production. The team in charge of the main ceremonial pavilion is currently installing the roof and applying interior decorations. The walls are approximately 50 percent installed.
Preparatory drawings for murals depicting royal-projects, to be created on the interior walls of the Royal MeritMaking Pavilion, have now been completed. The sketches will be enlarged to fit the size of the three walls inside the pavilion. Experienced craftsmen from the Department of Fine Arts, Bunditpatanasilpa Institute and Pohchang Academy of Arts will now start painting the walls. Government To Install 40,000 Security Cameras Nationwide Countrywide installations of 40,000 security cameras with a system enabling authorities to watch footage in real time are being prepared as the government seeks to solve the problem of a lack of surveillance capability in many areas. The move follows the inspection of 300,000 closed-circuit televisions (CCTV), owned by government and non-government agencies, across the country in March. The inspections found a significant proportion of the cameras were not working, while there were an insufficient number of cameras in many public areas, defense spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich said yesterday after a meeting of the “CCTV installation committee”, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. The meeting did not discuss the budget needed for the purchase. Under the plan, security cameras will be connected to national and provincial centers in order to allow police officers and
state officials to monitor what the cameras record in real time. Companies or people who own cameras installed in public places will be also encouraged to join the plan. The bomb that went off at Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok injuring 25 people on May 22nd spurred official interest in the state of security cameras. It was thanks to having security cameras installed at the hospital that led to the alleged bomber being tracked down and arrested. – Bangkok Post

12 million Tourists Visit Thailand in First 4 Months
Thailand has been visited by 12 million foreign tourists in the first four months of this year, generating more than 800 billion THB. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, 2,827 million foreigners visited Thailand in April, 1,877 million of whom were from East Asia, followed by Europe and South Asia. Thailand gained 139.9 billion THB from tourism in April, which represents an increase of 7.64% year on year. Between January and April 2017, the Land of Smiles welcomed 12.02 million people from overseas, creating a 2.91% rise in visitor numbers. The industry generated more than 800 billion THB for the country, an increase of 4.71% compared to the same period last year. The ministry has instructed tourism and security related agencies to keep all tourists safe and keep hospitality standards high, in the hope of increasing the country’s tourism revenue. (NNT)

Thailand to Launch New 10-year Multiple Entry Visa for Over 50’s Foreigners in Thailand will soon be able to apply for a 10-year visa. First proposed in November 2016 as a way to promote Thailand as a medical and wellness hub, the 10-year visa has now been formally approved by the Prime Minister. The new Non O X visa will be available to anyone who is over 50 years of age and from one of 14 countries. Applicants will need to have a minimum 3 million THB in a Thai bank account, or a combination of 1.8 million THB in the bank and income not less than 1.2 million THB. The 3 million THB must be kept in the bank as a deposit for a period of one year but can be reduced to 1.5 million under certain conditions. Criminal background checks are required on all applicants, who must also have valid medical insurance from a Thai insurance company for the duration of the visa. Foreigners are not permitted to work while staying in Thailand on the visa and 90-day reports are still required. The visa will cost 10,000 THB and will be valid for 5 years, before being renewed for a further 5 years. The new Non O X visa will be available from August 11th, with an official announcement soon expected. The Non O X visa does not replace the current annual retirement extension.

353 Janeric’s CABINET; 20 Years OF Home Design and Construction Janeric K Hogane is the Swedish Managing Director who founded The CABINET Interior Design company in 1996 in Bangkok with his wife Apinya. The Thai-Swedish business then expanded to Hua Hin and rapidly grew with an in-house design, installation and construction capacity and a large furniture production facility nearby.

For two days in June, Janeric offered an open house event to the public showcasing a wide variety of Nordic inspired products including home appliances from Electrolux and Siemens.
Many Hua Hin residents, particularly those without a need for home renovation or construction needs may have passed by the CABINET showrooms on Phetchakasim Road many times without a second glance or perhaps assumed that the premises was just another homewares shop.

This is a very significant business with over 5,000 interior design projects successfully completed in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Rayong and elsewhere. “We do about 800 kitchens per year,” says Janeric, “we also design and install many wardrobes and cabinets custom-made to the customer’s wishes.”
Taking a tour through the 1,300 square metre premises with more than 100 staff on hand, demonstrated the design, supply and production capability showing how the promise of a ‘turnkey’ service can be delivered. This means that at the completion of the work householders can open the front door and immediately start living in their completed home.

“We used a subcontractor to produce the furniture for us during the first 3 years. Then we started our own factory in Hua Hin,” says Apinya.

An unplanned safety demonstration ensued as one chainsaw stalled when the VIP operator strayed onto a flag draped across the timber. That’s a deliberate safety feature designed to save life and limb should a chainsaw accidentally move from wood to clothing.
“Everything tailor-made we produce there is ready to install or to assemble on site. This should be compared to many built-in companies who move the whole factory to the customers’ premises”. “What you want you can have, rather than what we have you can have,” adds Janeric.
We asked Janeric; what about tiles? “yes we can”, what about window treatment? “yes we can”, What about a swimming pool? “yes we can” and what about kitchen appliances and utensils? “yes we can.” He was quoted many years ago to describe ‘turnkey’ to mean “from bare shell to beer in the fridge”, referring to bare shell condos and houses. We didn’t ask; but we’re confident that even beer in the fridge can be arranged! Clients are a mix of private home-owners, property developers, general businesses, hotels and restaurants. The Palm Pavilion condominium was a project which provided some early reasons for Janeric’s interest in the growing future of the Hua Hin market.

375 West Brom’s Young Football Stars are coming to Town West Bromwich Albion Football Club, also known as West Brom, The Baggies, The Throstles, Albion or simply WBA, is an English professional football club based in the West Midlands of England.
The club was formed in 1878, is one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888 and has spent the majority of its existence in the top tier of English football. Last month the facilities of True Arena Hua Hin were under review by West Brom Youth Development Coach Peter Gilbert as a precursor to the Club’s U 16 squad visit to Hua Hin and to True Arena. Peter’s football credentials are impressive. He retired from a professional playing football career two years ago after playing at the highest levels with Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday. Coincidentally both are clubs with Thai ownership. Peter is a first time visitor to Thailand who had few expectations about what was on offer in Hua Hin. He was joined by Robert Traill, CEO of Traill International School and Traill Sports in Bangkok and Wasawat Tuntiprapha, (Khun Ong) the General Manager of True Arena. The review considered the standard of the football pitches, gymnasium, fitness and other sporting facilities. To say Peter was impressed is really an understatement. “Premier League standard”
was a frequent response when asked his opinion of the True Arena facilities. The visiting U 16 squad represents the future of West Brom football at the highest levels which meant the review was to carefully consider any potential jeopardy for these talented young footballers during their end of season trip. The squad’s visit is intended to help prepare them for a football future on the world stage without a compromise in standards; and that is what the review found is on offer. There’s no doubt that the facilities of True Arena, as well as accommodation at the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort passed the ‘inspection’ with flying colours. This will mean confirmation of the visit by the youthful squad of over 20 to Hua Hin from 14th to 17th July for a series of matches and workshops. There is an opportunity for Hua Hin’s young footballers to be involved and maybe some scouting of the local talent. Coach Peter is eager to involve local youth who may have had limited opportunities in their lives. West Brom is based in a very multi-cultural community and has a reputation for inclusion

IOC Approves Golf
for Inclusion in the 2024 Olympics The big headline out of the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board is the approval of awarding the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games at the same time, paving the way for both sites in the running for 2024—Paris and Los Angeles—to eventually hold the Games.
Less publicised but no less important to golf fans, however, was the IOC’s announcement that all 28 sports from the 2016 Rio program will remain on in 2024, meaning golf will return beyond its initial two Games guarantee. No doubt helping in the decision-making process was the successful return of the sport to the Games last August, with dramatic finishes on the men’s and women’s side, Justin Rose of England and Inbee Park of South Korea capturing their respective gold medals.
The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo Japan will be played on the Kasumigaseki Country Club’s East course, a frequent host of both the Japan Open and the Asian Amateur Championship. If Paris is awarded the 2024 Games, as many IOC observers believe will be the case when a final decision is made in September, Le Golf National, site of next year’s Ryder Cup, would be the course where the men’s and women’s tournaments would be contested. If Los Angeles is host in 2024 (or 2028), the current plan is for Riviera Country Club, site of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open, to be the venue for the golf competition. There was also some good news for those who hope the format of the golf competition in future Olympics might be more dynamic rather than just 72 holes of stroke play. At the 2020 Olympics, the IOC has approved additional events, specifically three-on-three basketball and mixed gender relays in track and in swimming. This suggests that the organisation might be willing to accept alternative formats in golf as well, such as two-person team competitions or even two-person mixed team tournaments, at either stroke or match play.

Penalty Drama at Football Tournament in Cha-Am The inaugural 10 a side Football Cup organised by the Cha-Am Municipality concluded on the afternoon of 18th June. A field of 32 teams was whittled down to just two with the final throwing up a local derby between Tessaban Cha-Am and Chomlom Cha-Am.

There was nothing to separate the two sides with the match finishing 1-1 during normal time meaning that a penalty shootout was required to decide the tournament winner. It made for some nail-biting drama at the Cha-Am temple pitch with Tessaban Cha-Am eventually winning 9-8 on spot kicks. As well as the trophy there was also a significant amount of prize money on offer. Tessaban Cha-Am walked away with 50,000 THB as the tournament winners while runners up Chomlom Cha-Am had to settle for a consolation prize of 20,000 THB. Earlier in the afternoon the two beaten semifinalists had gone head to head in the third and fourth place playoff.

42 10 The ‘Masters of Swing’ 2017 This night was a celebration of the Event’s success, with prize presentations, a sumptuous dinner and live entertainment, including several ladies performing in the pool! The mood of the evening was one of exuberance and jubilation. Our conversations with the party-goers were laced with lavish praise of the organisers, the quality of the golf courses, competition and the social scene. The caddies were singled out as one special feature of golfing in Thailand. From all reports tipping was very generous.
Expect the Centara to welcome even more golfers in the future The culmination of the 4th edition of the Centara World Masters Golf Championship was poolside at the Centara Grand Beach Resort for the June evening of the Gala Presentation Dinner. This followed four days of golf competition at regional Golf Courses; Banyan and Black Mountain. Within a short span of time, this event has become the biggest tournament for club golfers in Asia. The tournament is a major boon for tourism in Hua Hin during the low season. The event attracted 400 amateur golfers from around the world aged 35 and over who competed for US$ 30,000 in prizes. The tournament attracted big numbers from Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, India, New Zealand and China. Myanmar golfers featured prominently amongst the winners.
“By far the best managed event I’ve joined” or “so enjoyable” were common comments. Tournament director, Peter McCarthy, was singled out because of his “good looks, skills and ready wit.” Mr. Tanes Petsawun, Thailand Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Executive Director of Europe, Africa, and Middle East Region has said, “The immense interest in this golf tournament once again proves that Thailand is a golf paradise.” The TAT was an official sponsor of the event.

Joint Organisers, Peter McCarthy and Mark Siegel, Managing Directors of Go Golfing and Golfasian, respectively, said, “The support of TAT as a major sponsor is a great endorsement for the tournament.” The most visible (and vocal) party goers were Australians with something like 70% of the golfers hailing from ‘down under’. The only problem for the organisers with a large Australian contingency was to estimate the ‘beer budget’, not only for the opening and closing parties but for the 19th hole festivities every evening.
Golfers didn’t all remain poolside! Next year’s Masters will include an inter-club competition with the best 5 scores from each represented club being combined to determine the winning club. One golfer said he was one of four from his home club at this year’s event but he expects to be one of fourteen next year. The competition for this addition to the usual format is likely to be fierce. Once again the generosity of the visiting golfers will result in a more secure future for the remote village communities assisted by the Hua Hin organisation Jungle Aid. At last count, over 200,000 THB was raised this year to assist Jungle Aid, a very worthy beneficiary attested by Peter McCarthy from Go Golfing who has taken the time to visit a Jungle Aid village project. The Winners? With 11 tournament divisions based on age, gender and handicap; too many golfing winners to list! Playing golf with those of a similar age and standard is one of the event’s great traditions. The General Manager of Royal Hua Hin Golf Course Senior Captain Chao Pobtasnapong (Rtn.) as confirmed that the Singha Hua Hin Open 2017, an event in the All Thailand Tour, will be played at Royal Hua Hin from 6th – 9th July with around 200 professional golfers expected to compete. Prize money for the event will be over 2 million THB, with both men and ladies divisions. According to Senior Captain Chao (pictured right), wild monkeys have been causing some trouble for golfers, especially on the 13th to 15th holes by grabbing visitors’ bags or stealing golf balls. Staff have been carrying a slingshot to scare the animals away without hurting them.

During the low season, the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course has a promotional activity for golfers known as ‘Sports Day’. Each Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays from July green fees will be reduced to 800 THB.
Organized by Hua Hin Grand and Plaza Hotel, the Cha-Am/Hua Hin Tourism Association, the Billiards Association of Thailand and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, this event took place from 12 to 17 June 2017.
The aim is to encourage Thai youth to play snooker and promote and develop the sport throughout Thailand. The first competition to open the tournament saw Mr. Ratchaphol Phu-obom, or Tong Sitchoi a very well-known professional Thai snooker player ranked the 90th for the world and Mr. Huang Jia Hua from China.

If there’s one dish every traveller to Thailand must try, it is Som Tam - the wonderful, spicy green papaya salad. This dish is fast becoming the Kingdom’s national dish, if not already. It is listed in the World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011 Som Tam is the perfect dish for the heat and humidity of countries in SE Asia. In Thailand, from street food vendors to small family-run restaurants to more upmarket dining establishments, Som Tam is a constant on the menu. If you search online for Som Tam, most websites will show you only the fantastic salad of green papaya, yet there are so many more versions of this national icon. Most travellers to Thailand would have only tried the one style of Som Tam, yet locals know of so many more flavour sensations that travellers miss. Originating in Laos, you will find versions of Som Tam all around SE Asia. This dish epitomizes the flavour profile of Thai food: hot, sour, salty and sweet.
Som Tam Thai - This is the standard version of green papaya that is internationally famous and most popular with travellers. Only this style contains the added crunch and flavour of peanuts.
Tam Khao Pot - This version uses sweet corn kernels instead of green papaya. The corn is sweet, offset by the sourness of the dressing.
In Thailand, Som Tam is flavoured by chili, palm sugar, garlic, lime and fish sauce. Usual additions are dried shrimps, tomatoes and snake beans.
You can add any other protein to a Som Tam to make it your own; crispy pork belly, pork sausage, crispy fish or chicken virtually anything. Remember to always say how many chillies you want. Three chillies will give you a fairly medium spice level.
Below is a short guide to some of the best versions of Som Tam; often simply called ‘Tam’. Som Tam Boo - Boo is crab and in this salad, it’s raw, brined rice paddy crabs that are used. It’s known for its strong, in your face flavour, however for lovers of crab, this is for you. Som Tam Pla Ra - The version has the addition of Pla Ra, which is fish fermented for six months or more. From the NorthEast region, this condiment has a very strong aroma and a rather salty and sour flavour. It is not for the faint-hearted.
Som Tam Plate - This is a platter with Som Tam as the central food hero. Order this when you have a group people who love all different flavours as you can make it your own at the table by choosing from up to 8 different items. It’s also about discovering what makes Thai food so tasty.
As a replacement for green papaya, try green mango, cucumber, carrot or for a really local version, green banana is wonderful. Tam Phonlamai Ruam - This version substitutes mixed fruit like apples, grapes, pineapple and guava. It is like a spicy fruit salad and is a taste sensation. It also matches well to the tropical climate. The natural sweetness of the fruit also helps cut through the chilli heat.
Tam Sua - Vermicelli noodles are mixed with green papaya, brined crab and fermented fish sauce to make this salad. The noodles add a soft, unctuous texture to this strong and pungent dish.
Any of the variations are usually eaten with sticky rice and grilled chicken – Gai Yang, however it is also great with fermented rice noodles - Khanom Jeen, or pork crackling - Khep Moo. So be brave; order your new Som Tam favourite.

11 55 Hua Hin Spartans in Training for Their Big Race Spartan Race Courses are designed to challenge you physically. There is fire, mud, water, barbed wire, and occasionally Hell on Earth. Spartan Race is designed to pull you from your comfort zone and challenge you; perhaps something akin to a commando training course. That’s what’s ahead of the Hua Hin Spartans Training Group which is currently preparing for their entry to the first Thailand Spartan Race. Spartan Race is the world’s most challenging obstacle race, with over 240 races in 25 countries around the world this year. Spartan Race is not your everyday running race; contestants run, climb, push, pull, throw and crawl through walls, hills, trees and other diverse obstacles. Spartan Race is coming to Thailand September at the Siam Country Club, Chonburi on September 9th.
About Spartan Race Training in Hua Hin Training happens in Hua Hin in two locations with indoor and outdoor training to prepare for this exhilarating race with its 20 testing obstacles over five kilometres. 1. The Jungle / bush land training area is located up in the hills just past the Elephant Sanctuary 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town with many of the obstacle events that will be in the race. 2. Indoor training and the core work is at the Palapon fitness centre in Khao Takiab.

Choose a wine that can stand up to the spice levels of Thai food, that is lower in alcohol, has some level of residual sugar, as that is what helps it balance the spice level.
In Thailand, where room temperatures can be high, this is an even greater consideration.
An off-dry German Riesling is the perfect choice. As Thai meals comprise many dishes, flavours and heat levels, Riesling is able to cope. Other aromatic whites are Pinot Gris / Grigio, Gewürztraminer and Chenin Blanc. Thai food is quite diverse; southern dishes are very different to those of the north. These white wines have higher acidity to assist in cutting through the flavours from the different regions. For drinkers of red, look for wines with softer tannins and not much oak. Forego a big Australian Shiraz or Cabernet for a subtler Pinot Noir, Rosé or Beaujolais. The lack of oak and subtle palate is perfect. Match heavier dishes with heavier wines, again avoiding oak. Tempranillo and very lightly oaked Sangiovese are two that work. A style not to be forgotten is sparkling wine! There is a reason why beer is great with Thai Food and it’s not just about accessibility; the bubbles do help cleanse the palate of oil and spice. The same can be said of Champagne or other sparking wines. They are very versatile, pairing with stronger meat dishes, yet delicate enough to go with lighter seafood. Italian sparkling wines are particularly superb, as they seem to enhance the flavours of many Thai dishes. Another other tip for wine in Thailand is to drink it at the right temperature. It is commonplace to see red wine being consumed far too warm. The term ‘room temperature’ refers to the temperature of a wine cellar, not the room in which the wine is served.
