Value for money would be felt by all players if green fee included caddies fee, not tip, after all the caddies are compulsory. Thailand needs to look at “value for money” especially as the Baht is so strong. The pure beauty of Thailand will start to pale if things don’t start to change......... I can hear surrounding countries rubbing their hands.....

This is a familiar intersection to Hua Hin Today staff as it is very close to our office. As someone who has witnessed accidents, I would support this suggestion although I haven’t seen the petition. Temporary plastic ‘witches hats’ that feature at the intersection are not really a solution to the apparent dangers.

Could you do an article on villa burglaries in Hua Hin? Red Mountain is an easy target for the thieves, already 2 burglaries in Waterside Red Mountain, 3 in Boutique Red Mountain and 1 in Woodlands Red Mountain. I have recently joined many others who have petitioned the Hua Hin government to install traffic signals at the dangerous soi 116 intersection.
I liked the letter about caddies; it is an added cost which mounts quickly especially if a husband and wife play. However the cost of the caddie is small when put against the exorbitant green fees. HUA HIN TODAY, July 2018
This is a very dangerous intersection with Phetchakasim Road where there have been many accidents at a confusing and busy crossing. Speeding vehicles coming from the direction of Pranburi come across local traffic without any controls and traffic lights would make a big difference. I hope that you can bring this matter to the notice of the local government. (unnamed)

3 Content 4 Cover Story This month has become the focus of environmental concerns worldwide and dubbed ‘Plastic-Free July” There’s a global awakening about the devastation that waste, especially single use plastics, is reeking on the environment with disturbing news items on this subject frequently coming across my desk. The oceans are particularly vulnerable with visible evidence of floating ’islands’ of plastic and marine animals suffering after being entangled or ingesting discarded plastic. The problems may seem rather overwhelming, but there’s also an understanding that individual actions can make a difference. It’s a bit like the story of the young boy throwing starfish back into the ocean after a storm had washed them up onto the beach. When asked why he was throwing them back, he replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die unless I throw them back into the water.” The cynical reply suggested, “There must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach; you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.” The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he smiled and said, “I made a difference to that one!” The point is that your refusal to take one plastic straw with your iced frappé or one plastic bag at the 7-Eleven means one less item of plastic waste that may end up in the ocean. Everyone can make a difference in reducing plastic pollution. Get into the plastic-free habit this month and spread the word!

King Rama X; the Royal Birthday
July 28th is His Majesty King Rama X’s birthday. Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun was born 28thJuly 1952 and has been the King of Thailand since 2016. It has been announced that this year 5th December will remain Father’s Day, and that the birthdate of 28th July will be also be a national holiday. King Vajiralongkorn will turn 66 on July 28. His Majesty the King’s heraldic colour, like his late father, is yellow. Patarut Dardarananda, permanent secretary to the Bangkok governor, has said that the city will decorate major streets with lights and flags bearing the king’s insignia.The City Hall has encouraged Bangkokians to wear the king’s colour – yellow – the entire month of July to mark his birthday. Government leaders and civil servants will hold a candlelit ceremony at Sanam Luang to wish His Majesty well on his birthday, Patarut added. With the passing of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King MahaVajiralongkorn, now known as Rama X, the 10th ruler of the Chakri dynasty, became the oldest Thai monarch to ascend to the throne at the age of 64. His Majesty King MahaVajiralongkorntshirts are being sold at the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister Office which is located inside Government House. Printed with pictures drawn by His Majesty the King himself, the shirts can be worn on all occasions and throughout July which is the birthday anniversary month of His Majesty. agencies related to the palace, including the gigantic Crown Property Bureau, the largest landowner in the country. Political scientist Pitch Pongsawat said King Rama X’s first year has been notable for his interest in solving the bloody insurgency in the three southern provinces, as seen in the number of development initiatives and projects he’s established. In fact, just a week after Rama X assumed kingship in December 2016, he made his first trip outside Bangkok as king to the Deep South region. “I think His Majesty gives more importance to the Deep South than Bangkok society does,” said Pitch, who teaches at Chulalongkorn University. Veera Somkwamkid, a transparency activist who has campaigned politically on a pro-palace platform, said the most apparent change brought about by the new king is increased discipline in the armed forces. “Since he ascended the throne, we can see that discipline in the military has become
more strict,” Veera said. And His Majesty appears to be more prone to intervention than his predecessor. In January, the king ordered the government to change portions of the new constitution regarding royal power, even though there were no existing legal mechanisms for doing so. To solve the dilemma, the interim parliament had to retroactively amend a clause that would allow the king’s wishes to be satisfied. In a sign that his influence will likely extend to the armed forces as well, the king introduced a new form of salute and stricter haircut to the military and police. A new police uniform colour has been implemented per his royal wishes. With an election looming in 2018, political observers are also anticipating what role King Vajiralongkorn will play in shaping the civilian government set to replace the junta after more than four years in power. 8 Charging Ahead to a Solar Powered Motoring Future
Sion is the electric car of the German start-up Sono Motors. Its battery can be charged using or its own solar cells or the electric grid . The founders have been working on the realisation of the Sion since 2012. In 2016 and 2017, crowd funding campaigns were used to finance the implementation. The drive is a three-phase asynchronous motor with a power of 80 kW (109 Hp). The motor voltage is 400 V. With the rear wheel drive, a top speed of 140 km/h can be achieved. The Sion is to have a range of approximately 250 km under realistic conditions. The owner of the vehicle is able to use his / her mobile phone app to offer other people electric power (power-sharing), ridesharing or car-sharing. The Sion will cost 16,000 euros (600,000 THB) plus the battery in its standard configuration. The battery will be offered either at a monthly amount or for purchase. The one-time purchase price of the battery is projected to be less than 4,000 euros. The Keyless Ignition Trap
It seems like a common convenience in a digital age: a car that can be powered on and off with the push of a button, rather than the mechanical turning of a key. But it is a convenience that can have a deadly effect.
One commuter drove his Toyota RAV4 into the garage attached to his home and went into the house with the wireless key fob, evidently believing the car was shut off. Twenty-nine hours later, he was found dead, overcome with carbon monoxide that flooded his home while he slept. “After 75 years of driving, my father thought that when he took the key with him when he left the car, the car would be off,” said the deceased’s son. The man is among more than two dozen people killed by carbon monoxide in the US since 2006 after a keyless-ignition vehicle was inadvertently left running in a garage. Dozens of others have been injured, some left with brain damage. HUA HIN TODAY, July 2018
Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, depriving the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen. Victims are sometimes found with a cherry red rash, a symptom of carbon monoxide molecules attaching to red blood cells. Some who survive live with irreversible brain damage. The keyless ignition was introduced as a luxury feature in Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Germany in 1998, a year after DaimlerBenz filed for a German patent, and entered the American market in 2002. Some carmakers called it the “smart key,” a wireless device sending a code to the car’s computer so the driver can start the engine with a button, instead of a mechanical key. It was meant as an
additional selling point for luxury cars: no more fumbling for keys. Keyless ignitions are now standard in over half of new vehicles sold annually, rather than a physical key, drivers carry a fob that transmits a radio signal, and as long as the fob is present, a car can be started with the touch of a button. But weaned from the habit of turning and removing a key to shut off the motor, drivers — particularly older ones — can be lulled by newer, quieter engines into mistakenly thinking that it has stopped running. Safety measures have been a matter of contention among automakers, sometimes even internally. Toyota, for example, has a system of three audible signals outside the car, and one inside, to alert drivers getting out of a vehicle that the motor is still running. But when Toyota engineers determined that more effective warning signals were needed — like flashing lights or a unique tone — the company rejected the recommendation. Toyota says its keyless ignition system “meets or exceeds all relevant federal safety standards.”
At Mazda, keyless ignition is now standard, and some vehicles have an “advanced keyless entry” system that helps alert the driver to a running engine. If the driver gets out, the doors are closed and the engine is running, six repetitions of a double beep sound inside and outside the car, and a warning light activates on the instrument panel. On other Mazda vehicles in the same circumstances, the external warning sounds only if the key fob is still in the vehicle. Some automakers have designed newer models that alert drivers more insistently when the engine is left running — or that shut it off after a certain period. Ford’s keyless vehicles now have a feature that automatically turns off the engine after 30 minutes of idling if the key fob is not in the vehicle. In the meantime, in a society increasing growing older, the hazard is likely to be compounded by demographics.

We Want our Homes Back, Not Money, Say Kaeng Krachan’s Karen forest Dwellers
Karen Forest dwellers have vowed to fight on for their right to return to their old homes in Phetchaburi’s Kaeng Krachan National Park, despite a June court ruling.
Pinnapa Prueksaphan, the granddaughterin-law of Karen community’s 107-yearold spiritual leader Ko-I, at the Supreme Administrative Court. The right to return means much more than “financial compensation” to the ethnic community’s 107-year-old spiritual leader Ko-I, who lived at Ban Bangkloi Bon long before it fell within the boundaries of the national park created in 1981. Ko-I is one of the six plaintiffs in the case filed with the administrative court after forestry officials burned down more than 100 houses at Ban Bangkloi Bon in 2012 in a bid to evict their Karen owners. “Actually, we don’t want money. Grandpa Ko-I just wants to go home,” Ko-I’s granddaughter-in-law Pinnapa Prueksaphan said after the Supreme Administrative Court awarded more than 50,000 THB compensation to each of the six plaintiffs.

documents or permits issued by authorities to occupy any part of Kaeng Krachan National Park. “We will try to prove that these ethnic Karen people had been living there before the park was created,” said Surapong Kongchantuk from the Lawyers Council of Thailand. He said a Cabinet resolution issued on August 3rd, 2010 gave guidance on how to rehabilitate the Karen’s ways of life and protect their communities in the disputed areas. “The Supreme Administrative Court mentioned this Cabinet resolution in its verdict. So this means all relevant authorities should comply with this Cabinet resolution,” Surapong said. He said his team would cite the Cabinet’s resolution to trigger the process and prove that Ko-I and his community had lived inside the area that is now part of the national park. Ko-I is a leading campaigner for the rights of the Karen people. One of his grandsons, Pholachi “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, disappeared in 2014 after last being seen in the custody of

10 Asaha Bucha & Khao Pansa Important Buddhist Commemorations
Wan Asana Bucha and Wan Khao Pansa are very important Thai Buddhist holidays in July. This year Wan Asana Bucha is on Friday 27th July and Wan Khao Pansa on Saturday 28th July. Buddhists throughout Thailand will make merit this month during the morning alms rounds of Buddhist monks and the faithful will attend candle-lit processions at nearby temples in the evening to mark Asana Bucha. Wan Khao Pansa Wan Khao Pansameans the day of entering the rains retreat. This is a three-month annual retreat usually undertaken from July to October, during which monks must stay at the same temple, and refrain from wandering around the countryside. In India, it is known as Vassa. It begins on the day after Asana Bucha. The tradition dates from the time of the Buddha, when he forbade monks to travel during the rainy season for fear that they might unintentionally harm crops or insects in the places where they walked. The Rains Retreat in Thailand In Thailand, monks use the retreat to meditate more intensively. Lay people will often use this period to adopt more ascetic practices, abstaining from meat, alcohol or cigarettes for example. Wan Khao Pansa is often referred to as Buddhist Lent, with an emphasis on reflection and selfdenial.It is also a time when many young Thai men ordain and join the monkhood for part or all of the period of the rains retreat.
Many businesses, government offices, schools and the like will be closed. There will be restrictions on alcohol sales as well. There will be many activities around the temples, predominantly listening to sermons, making merit and feeding the monks. Wan Asana Bucha Wan Asana Bucha commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park at Benares (Varanasi) in India. In this sermon, known as Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion, the Buddha first spelled out the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. This day is also regarded as the founding day of the Buddhist sangha (monkhood). Many Thai people will return to their ancestral homes to worship in their local temple and to bring offerings for the monks. In the evening they will often perform a wian tian, where they walk clockwise around the main shrine of the temple carrying a candle, three incense sticks and a lotus bed. During the day, monks chant mantras or repeat the first sermon of the Buddha.
Global Warming May Have ‘Devastating’ Effects on Rice As carbon dioxide rises due to the burning of fossil fuels, rice will lose some of its protein and vitamin content, putting millions of people at risk of malnutrition, scientists have warned.
The change could be particularly dire in southeast Asia where rice is a major part of the daily diet, said the report in the journal Science Advances. “We are showing that global warming, climate change and particularly greenhouse gases -- carbon dioxide -- can have an impact on the nutrient content of plants we eat,” said co-author Adam Drewnowski, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington.
Global warming may affect the nutrition of rice
“This can have devastating effects on the riceconsuming countries where about 70 percent of the calories and most of the nutrients come from rice.” Protein and vitamin deficiencies can lead to growth-stunting, birth defects, diarrhea, infections and early death. Countries at most risk include those that consume the most rice and have the lowest gross domestic product (GDP), such as Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, Drewnowksi said. The findings were based on field studies in Japan and China, simulating the amount of CO2 expected in the atmosphere by the second half of this century -- 568 to 590 parts per million. Current levels are just over 400 ppm. For the experiments, 18 different strains of rice were planted in open fields, surrounded in certain areas by 56-foot wide (17-metre) octagons of plastic piping that released extra CO2. According to study co-author Kazuhiko Kobayashi, a professor at the University of Tokyo, the experiment is designed to be more accurate than growing in a greenhouse. “This technique allows us to test the effects of higher carbon dioxide concentrations on plants growing in the same conditions that farmers really will grow them some decades later in this century,” said Kobayashi. Vitamins cut Researchers found that iron, zinc, protein, and vitamins
B1, B2, B5, and B9 -- which help the body convert food to energy -- were all reduced in the rice grown under higher CO2 conditions. “Vitamin B1 (thiamine) levels decreased by 17.1 percent; average Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) by 16.6 percent; average Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) by 12.7 percent; and average Vitamin B9 (folate) by 30.3 percent,” said the report. On average, protein content fell 10.3 percent, iron dropped eight percent and zinc was reduced by 5.1 percent, compared to rice grown today under current CO2 conditions. Vitamin B6 and calcium were unaffected, and vitamin E levels rose for most strains. The reasons for the changes have to do with how higher CO2 affects the plant’s structure and growth, increasing carbohydrate content and reducing protein and minerals, said the study. Higher CO2 means less exposure to nitrogen, which also may affect vitamin content, researchers said. Not all rice varieties saw the same drops in nutritional value, raising hope that future research could help farmers develop strains of rice that would be more resilient to atmospheric changes. A separate study out last year by researchers at Harvard University found that global warming would cut protein in a number of key staples, including rice, wheat, barley and potatoes. The result: an additional 150 million people globally may be at risk of protein deficiency by 2050.

The inspections followed reports that budget frauds have occurred in this important service for children at government schools.
Mr. Jeerawat is eager to encourage local administrators to follow the government financial audit guidelines to prevent corruption in this area. The contents of lunches need to be fully described, including the cooking methods and carefully monitored to ensure that standards issued by the Ministry of Education are met. The checks conducted found that each school had a healthy nutritious food with a clear schedule of lunch items and that the schools were meeting the required standards.
11 Largest Train Station in Southeast Asia to Open in Bangkok
A new train station in Bangkok, destined to be the largest in Southeast Asia, is set to transform rail travel in Thailand. Construction of Bang Sue Central Station is now more than 50 percent complete and is on schedule to open in 2020. The station, which is located near Bang Sue intersection on Thoet Damri road, will become the hub for Thailand’s high speed rail links, from Bangkok to Nong Khai and Bangkok to Chiang Mai. The station will also be used for the proposed Eastern Economic Corridor highspeed rail line which will link three airports - Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-Tapao
in Rayong, and which promises travel from Pattaya to Bangkok in less than one hour. It will also service the Bangkok to Hua Hin line. Thailand Pledges to Beat Plastic Pollution
World Environment Day (June 5th) has seen the start of a campaign led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, 20 ministries and the private sector to reduce the use of plastics under the theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution: If you can’t reuse it, refuse it.” “All government agencies under 20 ministries will set examples for others to follow. They will reduce their use of plastic bags and foam containers,” Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Surasak Karnjanarat said. He said ministries would pursue tangible results so as to encourage all other sectors to halt their unnecessary use of plastic. The government had declared waste management a national agenda item, Surasak added. The move follows Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s April 17th order for the ministries of the Interior, and Natural Resources and Environment to campaign for reduced use of plastic. Thailand has generated about two million tonnes of plastic waste per year over the past decade. Of that amount, just half a tonne annually has been reused or recycled. “Most of the plastic waste is discarded bags, which will take about a century to decompose,” Surasak said, adding that both the environment and the economy were being damaged as a result. He also noted that Thailand had been ranked the world’s 6th biggest contributor of plastic pollution to oceans among 192 countries. Thailand’s 23 coastal provinces generate an estimated 11.47 million tonnes of waste daily. Pictures of rafts of plastic garbage in the ocean and its effects on marine life including sea turtles, whales, dolphins and rare sea animals clearly show that the environment problem caused by plastic waste has become more serious, Gen Surasak said. “In 2016 alone, the country had 27 million tonnes of garbage, of them 3.2 million was plastic. The figures coincide with information of the United Nations Environmental Program which says that as many as 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide each year. One half of the plastic products are for one-time use – including spoons, forks and cups. Each year more than 13 million tonnes of plastic garbage were dumped into the sea. . World Environment Day also saw an announcement by the Department of Medical Services (DMS) that 30 state
hospitals are to stop giving plastic bags for take home medicine from October 1st. Those who visit these hospitals are advised to provide their own cloth bags to carry medicines they may be given, DMS directorgeneral Somsak Akkhasilp said. The DMS will also ban cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers and balloon sticks, unless these products are made exclusively from more sustainable materials. In an effort to tackle the problem for the next five years, the Plastic Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Thailand Environment Institute Foundation have launched the “Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Plastic and Waste Management”. Its objective is to halve the amount of ocean waste Thailand produces by 2027. U n d e r t h e p ro j e c t , s o m e 2 0 organisations from the public, private, and civil sectors are supporting the implementation of sustainable plastic and waste management via the Circular Economy principle, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. An autopsy revealed more than 80 plastic bags were in the stomach of a pilot whale which recently died in southern Thailand To do this, it will: promote the recycling business, support entrepreneurs to develop innovation and technology for sustainable plastic management using the “3Rs” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle, educate consumers about waste management and disposal, encourage behavioural changes, pilot a clean city model in Bangkok’s Khlong Toei and in Rayong province, and develop a Thailand Plastic Material Flow Database to measure the project’s success by international standards. Relevant parties signed a memorandum of understanding on the project yesterday. Supant Mongkolsuthree, Federation of Thai Industries president, said the project was an important step for sustainable plastic and waste management in Thailand, since it was the first time that the public, private and civil sectors had partnered to declare their commitment with support from 177 companies in the industry sector. “The goal is to achieve tangible results in plastic waste management along the supply chain,” said Supant. Last month the ‘King of Fruits’ was in the news following record Chinese sales. Exporting the fruit in huge quantities to China benefits both the Thai economy and boosts the income of local producers; however the export of durian saplings is prohibited. Border checks have now been stepped up to prevent smuggling of durian saplings and the Agriculture Ministry is seeking cooperation from border officials to watch out for durian saplings being taken into Myanmar, according to a senior official.
Suwit Chaikiarttiyos, director general of the ministry’s Agriculture Department, said he has instructed officials from his department to step up their checks at border checkpoints in Ranong and Prachuap Khiri Khan following a spate of attempts to take durian saplings into Myanmar. In the latest incident, Suwit said many durian saplings were found at a house near the Singkhon border checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan. He said the Agriculture Ministry prohibits the exports of durian saplings for fear that it would affect the durian industry in the country.

A local farmer stated that the production volume of volcanic durian is extremely small. This year the production volume only reached around 3000 tons.
Fried Durian in Space!
Fried durian will soon be the first Thai food item to be sent into space to see how it is affected by weightlessness. The experiment is part of the “Thai Food to Space” project with advisor Dr Amarin Pimnoo, who heads the National Space Exploration Project of Daily Foods Co. If everything goes as planned, the first batch of fried durian will be sent into space in July. The fried durian will be floating in space around 4-5 minutes before it is sent back home, after which scientists will see how weightlessness affects the packaging and the fried durian.

As durian fever sweeps Thailand, comes a warning from Thai doctors. The department of public health has said that you should not overdo your durian intake. They said that eating the flesh surrounding two kernels each day is more than enough. But that is just for healthy people – for those suffering from chronic

In fact, a study conducted by the Swiss Society of Food Science and Technology found that when a durian is ripe, it contains higher levels of antioxidants than other Asian fruits of a similar ripeness, such as mangosteen, lychee and mango (in descending order). But here’s why you shouldn’t go wild over the tropical favourite: It’s a fruit with one of the highest fat content. “Apart from avocado, durian is a fruit that contains a significant amount of fat,” says Natalie. Plus, it can pack up to three times more calories compared to most other fruits. A saving grace; the high-fat content gives it a lower glycaemic index, says Gladys Wong, chief dietician at Alexandra Hospital. Durian also contains some protein, but it’s nothing to shout about – only around 3g per 100g of flesh, says Natalie. What’s more, protein from plant sources is “nutritionally incomplete,” she adds, meaning it lacks a balanced set of amino acids that are critical for muscle building. With the average portion in Thailand costing about 100 baht, it is unlikely that many people will eat it every day, however – even though many agree that it is the most heavenly taste on earth.

Police Captain Ronachai Chopkha Prachachai, a Deputy Inspector of the Hua Hin Police has been notified of a fruit shop snatch and grab and rushed to the premises named the King of fruits, Hua Hin. The owner of a shop gave testimony to police officers that, whilst waiting to serve customers, two men riding a Honda motorcycle and wearing full helmets, making it impossible to see their faces, approached the shop then the man on the back seat jumped down from the bike and grabbed two durians. He then and rushed back to the bike and fled the scene/ The culprits only held on to one durian as the second one fell to the ground. As they were in a hurry to escape, it was not retrieved. The durian that has stolen was unripe, weighed about 6 kilograms and is worth about a thousand baht. The owner of the shop said that if you want to eat durian, you do not have to run the risk of prison; just let him know. 15 Do You Need A Noise Diet?
A podcast during your morning chores, some classical music to drown out your noisy neighbours and a running playlist to get you through an evening jog. Experts fear our constant exposure to audio played straight into our ears could be creating a prematurely deaf generation. What about kids?
“We are very concerned. Many people working or travelling are now wearing ear buds, but they don’t necessarily know the sound levels they’re exposing themselves to,” Professor David McAlpine says. The World Health Organisation estimates more than 1 billion young people are in danger of hearing loss from portable audio devices, including smart phones. But it’s not just teenagers who are at risk. Anyone who uses headphones for more than 90 minutes each day could be jeopardising their hearing. A 2017 study by National Acoustic Laboratories found one in 10 regularly cranks up the volume on their headphones to more than 85 decibels — the equivalent to standing next to a running lawn mower. “When hearing damage starts, then you’re really on an irreversible journey. If you don’t protect your hearing, you’re going to damage it for life,” Professor McAlpine said. It’s currently estimated one in six will suffer some degree of hearing loss during their lives. That’s expected to rise to one in four by 2050, thanks to an ageing population and regular exposure to dangerously loud noises. The recommended maximum use of headphones is for no more than 90 minutes a day and the volume should never go beyond 80 per cent. A good rule of thumb is that if others can hear the sounds coming out of headphones while you are wearing them, they are too loud. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s heavy metal or classical music — what’s important is the volume and duration of your listening session. The global earphones and headphones market is worth about $12.6 billion, but it’s expected to grow to $20.8 billion by 2025. “The price doesn’t really strongly correlate
with the sound quality or the protection, so you have to be very careful about what you’re actually buying,” Professor McAlpine said.
The standard ear buds that come with your phone are okay — as long as you are disciplined about volume. But Professor McAlpine is not a fan of many of the chunky, overear headphones on the market because they emphasise bass, prompting listeners to crank up the volume. “You should think about getting some noise-cancellation headphones, because they stop you increasing the sound level of your audio to get above background noise,” he said.
Kids today are the first generation to have access to portable audio and headphones from birth. But experts say it’s too early to tell what impact a lifetime of headphone use will have. Parents who are concerned about their child’s exposure to noise can set restrictions to limit the maximum volume on most devices. Apple allows parents to secure volume restrictions on their child’s phone or mp3 player with a special password. If your child likes to watch videos on their computer, you download web apps which let you restrict the volume setting. Professor McAlpine says everyone should approach noise the same way they would junk food, alcohol or sun exposure. “We need to go on a noise diet. We should be protecting ourselves from intense sound. If we don’t, in the future we’ll have big problems.” ABC News
Eating Eggs without Raising the Cholesterol Bar
How many eggs are OK for your health? Is it OK to consume eggs every day? Eggs are highly nutritious and there are many benefits from consuming eggs and the price is also good.. Some consumers opt for egg whites and avoid the as it is the part that contains cholesterol. However, it is important to mention that egg yolks contain more minerals and vitamins than egg whites. Egg whites only contain protein, so by avoiding egg yolks, you are missing all the nutrition you will get from consuming the whole egg. Research shows that consuming food with high cholesterol does not affect the accumulation of cholesterol, which relate to heart disease. Such accumulation results from sugar, saturated fat from milk and meat and due to a lack of exercise.
The American Heart Association, or AHA, recommends those with good health consume one egg every day. However for those with a cholesterol level higher than 300 milligrams, or those with heart disease, diabetes, conditions related to blood pressure or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol; AHA recommends consuming an egg of a smaller size. The AHA also recommends that people with such conditions should not eat more than three egg yolks per week. They can consume egg whites as usual. The amount of consumption varies for each person. Normally we can consume eggs every day. However those with high cholesterol should pay more attention to what they consume. This can be easily determined by a health check covering cholesterol levels. Then you will be able to estimate the appropriate amount of eggs to consume. Consuming raw eggs is not recommended due to the risk of infection. It is also harder for the body to digest raw protein. If you are concerned about high cholesterol levels, it would be more effective to avoid saturated fat and transfat; such as junk food; red meat; or animal skin, rather than avoiding eggs. 19 Thailand as the Prime Asean Centre for Beauty Pageants Thailand is increasingly becoming the prime centre for the staging of international beauty contests in Asean, a trend that a key industry player says is in line with the government’s Thailand 4.0 model to promote the tourism sector and related businesses.
Pawina Bamrungrot, managing director of Miss Aura International Co (MAI), said that the holding of beauty pageants is a business that falls under the tourism industry. Benefits to the country include money generated from sponsorships, transport, media activities and advertising. “We estimate that more than 500 million THB per year is being generated by Thailand’s hosting of beauty contest activities, working out at between 15 and 20 million THB for each content,” she said. “That can be a starting point for boosting other related businesses, such as business travel, hotels, air and land transport service, as well as advertising and public relations. The move will reinforce the government policy, backed by the private sector, to mobilize the tourism sector in Thailand under the Thailand 4.0 economic model.” “These factors show that we are more than just an organizer of beauty pageant contents,” Pawina said. “If you look at the overall beauty pageant contest industry in Asean, we (Thailand) are at the center of it in the region. “This is not only to seek the most beautiful and talented girls, but also to create a good image of Thailand” and to help strengthen the economy. “We are ready to help promote Thailand’s tourism industry and help the government achieve the target of driving Thailand toward the top 10 of tourism countries,” Pawina said. – The Nation
New Airports Approved for Phuket and Chiang Mai The AoT Board of Directors has approved the construction of second airports for Phuket and Chiang Mai with a combined budget of 120 billion THB.
Each new airport is budgeted at 60 billion THB, said AOT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, with construction beginning in 2019 and completed no later than 2025. After four years of false starts and rumours it looks like Phuket will now get a much-needed second airport to feed the island and the surrounding region. An announcement by AoT (Airports of Thailand) comes after extensive studies to examine the extension of the current Phuket airport runway which is hemmed in by Thepkasattri Road at one end and the Andaman Sea at the other.
The newly announced airport won’t actually be on the island. It will be in Phang Nga, north of Phuket. Bangkok Airways has been discussing the proposal with the Government of a privately run airport for Phang Nga. Bangkok Airways operates the privately owned airport on
Koh Samui. It appears that the Government will build and manage the new airport through the AoT. The second Chiang Mai International Airport would be built in Lamphun’s Ban Thi district.
Defiant Hotels to Feel the Heat in Hua Hin, Governor Promises
Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Panlop Singhaseni said he has formed a committee to find a legal path to close 10 hotels in tHua Hin that continue to operate in defiance of licensing laws. The Online Travel Agent (OTA) system is the root of the problem, said Udom Srimahachota, vice president of the Thai Hotels Association. Only 197 hotels in Hua Hin have proper licenses, while some OTA websites have posted 699 Hua Hin hotels for people to book daily-rented accommodation, said Udom. Authorities should require the OTA post the hotels’ license numbers in their ads, so that consumers could feel confident of the facilities’ safety standards, said Udom. His group has urged Tourist Police Bureau deputy chief Pol MajGeneral Surachate Hakparn to crack down on illegal hotels in Hua Hin to prevent problems for tourists. Following a May 15 complaint from provincial administrators accusing 10 hotels of forging state-issued documents, using the forged papers and illegally operating hotel businesses, the hotels have continued operating. As bureaucratic red tape has posed a challenge in quickly shuttering the hotels, Panlop said he has set up a committee to look for a way to close them. He said the authorities had not issued licenses as the
hotels have claimed and was confident the investigation would bring the truth to light. “Hua Hin Municipality and Tambon Hin Lek Fai Administrative Organisation can order a ban for hotels to use these buildings, if the buildings were modified illegally or used for purposes other than for personal residences as
stated in the building permits,” Panlop said. He conceded that this has been a longstanding issue in the province. Panlop said he instructed all municipalities and tambon administrative organizations to check on buildings in their jurisdictions to discover if any had been turned into a hotel without proper permission, and to suspend such building use pending an investigation. A source said the province’s fact-finding panel had reported to the Interior Ministry about 10 hotels that used fake hotel licenses with forged signature of a deputy provincial governor who had retired in 2015, resulting in a serious disciplinary probe against four accused officials. The four unnamed persons, who served at Hua Hin during 2014-2015, also faced a police complaint over charges related to state-document forgery. Those officials are a former district chief officer who now serves in another province, a district clerk, a former district chief officer in charge of administrative affairs who now serves at the AntiMoney Laundering Office and a district office typist – the latter of whom had implicated the others. – The Nation

An advisory committee of the Royal Thai Police said it will recommend that fines for drink driving be dramatically increased. Police Major General Ekkarak Limsangkat said that the present rate of 10,000 THB and/or a year in jail is not enough of a deterrent. He wants to see this increased to at least 100,000 THB and possibly even 200,000 THB in more serious cases. Courts can raise the fines in the case of repeat offenses but the police want the power to issue far greater penalties to those who flout the law, even the first time. Ekkarak also said that his committee would like to see fines that are commensurate with the level of alcohol in the blood, punishing the most serious offenders the most. The committee that has members from the top echelons of the national police is going to make recommendations on a list of new measures designed to help improve the situation on the roads in the kingdom. The Phetchkasem Hua Hin Foundation has organised ‘Run for Life’ as a fundraising event to purchase an ambulance and rescue equipment. On June 9th, at the Huay Mongkol Temple, Mr.Sahachart Limcharoenpakdi, President of the Hua Hin Foundation and volunteers attended a ceremony to ensure the success of the event before runners embarked on the run of 215 kilometres from Hua Hin to the Dusit Palace in Bangkok. The need to raise funds followed an accident which damaged one of the Foundation’s two ambulances used to transport patients in urgent need of medical care. The event was able to fund over 2 million THB needed for a new ambulance which will be equipped with life-saving equipment and emergency lights. A gratefully received donation from the P & A Interest Company Limited of 20,000 THB commenced the fund raising efforts. Runners started from Hua Hin’s clock tower on June 16th at 6 AM and reached the Dusit Palace on June 25th. Around 25 Kilometres was covered each day with donations being received by people on the roadside along the route.

Police have said that the points system for driving offenses will definitely be introduced in 2019. But the categories of points might raise some eyebrows, especially for foreigners used to more severe penalties. Driving through red lights and going the wrong way are only classified in the “medium” problem bracket. In total drivers and riders have 12 points to play with each year before getting a ban. Category one feature minor offences such as no helmet or non-wearing of seat belts. Category two includes going through red lights and going the wrong way on roads. Category three is described as serious and includes drink driving, driving under the influence of drugs, speeding and fleeing the scene of an accident. For these offences three points will be awarded. Collect 12 points in a year and you will suffer a three-month ban. Get three bans and you will be banned from driving for a year. Employers responsible will face 10,000100,000 THB fine for each illegal immigrant, with up to 1-year imprisonment for repeated offenders, or 50,000-200,000 THB fine, or both, and a 3-year ban from hiring migrant workers. The provincial employment official said the province had so far processed work permit to some 21,000 migrant workers from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos who have passed through nationality verification and visa registration, allowing them to legally work and stay in Thailand. Public Health Ministry Warns of Rising Pneumonia Risks
The Public Health Ministry is warning Thais to beware of the rising risk of pneumonia during the rainy season, particularly among both young and elderly family members. Deputy Permanent Secretary and spokesman of the Public Health Ministry Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong said today that unstable weather conditions, which bring both heat and rain, pose a risk to people with health problems or a low immune system, especially those who are younger than five years old as well as older people with such chronic illnesses as heart disease, pneumonitis or diabetes.
Dr. Opas noted that people with these issues may contract colds or influenza easily and their condition may be further complicated by pneumonia, which is the No.1 cause of fatalities among those suffering from any type of infectious disease. According to Dr. Opas, there are seven groups of at-risk people, including women at least four months pregnant, children aged between six months and two years, people with chronic illnesses, the elderly aged over 65 years, cerebral palsy patients, people with thalassemia, immunodeficiency or HIV, and people who weigh over 100 kilograms. The Public Health Ministry spokesman is now urging all at-risk people to be vaccinated to prevent the chance of catching influenza or pneumonia as soon as possible. NNT

Sornkhiri Buajaeng and his wife, Sunaree Meemak put one ton of their produce in a pickup truck and drove from their orchard in Ban Kha district to the Khao Prathab Chang Wildlife Feeding Centre in Chom Bung district to donate the fruit to wild animals. The couple said they decided that donating the fruit would be better than watching it rot at home. Their decision reflects growing unhappiness among growers with the glut of fruit that has sent prices tumbling. “Sales this year are very bad because the price is very low,” said Sunaree, who grows pineapples on 30 rai of land. Pineapple processing plants in the first five months of this year were paying an average of 3.14 baht per kilogram, a 50% drop from 6.29 baht last year, according to the Office of Agricultural Economics. Even worse for those in the business, the average selling price of pineapples for consumption has also averaged 3.14 baht per kg, compared with 12.28 baht a year ago. But in some areas such as Chaiyaphum, pineapples are selling for as little as two baht per kilogram. The Agriculture Ministry has blamed the low prices on an oversupply. It did not give production statistics for this year but last year the country produced 2.5 million tons of pineapples. The plunging prices are affecting 40,000 farmers in 46 provinces. Prachuap Khirikhan is the country’s top
pineapple-growing province, followed by Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Rayong and Chon Buri, according to statistics from the Agricultural Extension Department. In a bid to alleviate the problem, provincial governors and other agencies have been ordered to promote consumption, while the Commerce Ministry has been directed to find new markets. Other promotional activities in recent weeks have been aimed at helping the farmers. Wat Phothiyan in Muang district in Phitsanulok bought five tons of the fruit to give away to visitors to the temple. On June 1, Royal Thai Army officers in Khon Kaen bought seven tons from farmers in Prachuap Khirikhan to give to soldiers on duty in the province. As authorities step up efforts to assist farmers, the ministry says their pain will be eased soon. Prices should improve from now, as more than 60% of the crop came onto the market during the first half of the year. – Bangkok Post
Fire Destroys Souvenir Shops in Hua Hin Last month a large fire destroyed six shops in Hua Hin near the main beach and Centara Grand Hotel Resort & Villas.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Samer U-samran coordinated with the fire station in Hua Hin to send three fire engines to the scene. This are 24 retail shops in the area however a rapid response and firefighters controlled the fire without anyone being injured and minimal damage being reported. Inspectors found that the fire had burned out three shops selling souvenirs with 6 shops being affected and damage estimated to be valued at around 300,000 THB.The fire is likely to have been caused
by an electrical fault however an expert report will now be completed to determine the cause.

For the third consecutive year, a combined CSR event by many of Hua Hin’ leading resorts has resulted in the donation of motorbike helmets to local school children.
Helmet Heros 2018 was held at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa with children from three schools learning the importance of road safety; particularly being encouraged to wear helmets after receiving and decorating their own helmets. Almost 400 children attended the event from the Ban Smor Prong School, Nong Kae School and BoFai School. They were able to enjoy a series of fun activities, including painting their new helmets, while also learning about the critical issue of road safety. This annual CSR event was supported by the local government, led by Khun Bussaba Chokesuchat, Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin municipality, Khun Sommai Sooksai, Director of Hua Hin Educational Department, officers from the Hua Hin traffic police and officers from the tourist police, who helped to educate the children. to improve the safety of its children, many of whom are risking their lives each day simply by travelling to and from school. 26 From HHQ to KLIA2; Forget About BKK or DMK!
Arriving at the Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA 2) less than 4 hours after walking out the front door of home in Hua Hin is now a reality. That’s allowing a generous 30 minutes to commute to the airport to check-in 90 minutes before the flight time and then a 2 hour flight. If you need to transit to KLIA (1) there are free shuttle options but don’t underestimate how long it will take to reach the check in counter at a different airport. Just make sure you know which of the two airports is your departure point to avoid any confusion. However there are plenty of friendly uniformed guides hovering to provide all the assistance needed. My flight time to Perth was another 5 hours 30 minutes, but many other destinations could be considered if you don’t just want to explore Malaysia. Singapore in just over an hour away, 8 hours to Sydney or even Chennai (India) and Manila are only 3 hours and 40 minutes further. Maybe the next time you are considering a trip away, the KL option is the way to go. Two hours on the ferry to Pattaya or two hours on a jet to KL? I know which one I prefer! My trip to Perth (Western Australia) was a chance to try out the new Hua Hin to Kuala Lumpur Air Asia flight. After all; “as the crow flies” from Hua Hin to Perth; you’d almost pass over KL en route. Being able to avoid Bangkok on an international journey is a major bonus. There’s many a optimistic website that describes commuting from Hua Hin to Bangkok in just two and a half hours; however if you are catching an international flight, especially from Don Muang Airport (that’s DMK); doubling that time is more realistic. With a flight time of 11.30 AM, I arrived at the Hua HIn Airport (that’s HHQ) around 10 AM for a stress-less checkin. Mind you with only one flight on the schedule, that’s hardly a stressful experience. Perhaps there will be some changes later in the year as unconfirmed reports suggest that flights to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Khon Kaen are under consideration. We’ll wait for an official announcement before speculating any on that possibility. From the check-in counter you’ll be directed up the escalator to the departure lounge via the usual hand luggage scan. There you’ll find a small snack counter and comfortable seating during the mandatory wait. There’s an expansive view from the lounge across the airport tarmac for some plane spotting, including the arrival of your airbus A 320 aircraft which will taxi to a bay below the departure lounge window. The only bad news was a 30 minute delay for the incoming flight. We learnt later that a runway repair in KL was the problem. It would have been nice if an earlier announcement had been made to the waiting passengers. The boarding announcement came as the last few disembarking passengers descended the mobile staircase to be offered sun-screening umbrellas for the 50 metre stroll across the tarmac.
Our flight was around half full, so it wasn’t long before take-off time and the opportunity to see a different view of the countryside and coastline for those (including me) who haven’t flown from Hua Hin before. Flying with a Low Cost Carrier (LCC) doesn’t mean compromising on safety or security but it does mean a few less creature comforts. Those in the over 6 foot bracket may find the leg (and elbow) space a bit limiting and the entertainment options are only what you bring. However a two hour flight is barely time enough to ponder the journey. The destination of Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) is the world’s largest airport for budget airlines. It is located approximately two kilometres away from KLIA’s Main Terminal Building and has its own runway and air traffic control tower. The airport allows seamless connectivity for both local and international low-cost carriers. It was built to cater for the explosive growth in the low-cost travel industry and capable of servicing 45 million passengers a year and officially opened on May 2nd 2014. After leaving probably one of the world’s smallest international airports, arriving at KLIA2 is a bit overwhelming. With 350,000 square feet of retail space spanning over 4 levels and an airport-within-a-mall concept, if there is time to be wasted in transit, you won’t be hungry or bored.

27 Increased Tourism: The Pressure of Unrestrained Growth There are more tourists now than ever before, thanks to the explosive growth of the Chinese outbound market and the ever-growing middle class worldwide. International tourist arrivals grew by a remarkable 7% in 2017 to reach 1.3 billion, according to UNWTO, and is projected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030.
But with record visitor numbers, many destinations and communities in Asia are starting to see the toll of tourism, and along with it resentment and backlash to the problems that unrestrained growth brings.
The forced six-month closure of Boracay after Philippine President Duterte labeled it a “cesspool” reflects the pressure Southeast Asia’s once-idyllic islands are now under.

The rising tide of plastic rubbish on Bali’s beaches has become a major concern for visitors and residents on the famed Indonesian island. For too long, long-term planning and development was sorely lacking in many destinations, as governments were caught up in the aggressive pursuit of tourism growth and numbers, pointed out Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). “A major trend in tourism has been that every government, every country in the world has been focused on demand and promotion. Tourism worldwide is mostly promotion, promotion, promotion, and in some cases nothing else,” Durband remarked. In the past 18 months, media attention on the problems surrounding mass tourism in such iconic destinations as Venice, Barcelona and Iceland has intensified worldwide, driving a greater awareness of overtourism and prompting calls to action in the global travel community.

“Finally, the world is waking up to the fact that we can’t put money only to promotion but into development and management; we have to measure visitor satisfaction and also community satisfaction,” Durband said.
But when asked how Thailand could cope with the influx of visitors from China, which alone contributed onequarter of Thailand’s inbound arrivals last year and is still a growing market, Tanes is confident the changing preferences of Chinese travelers will soon put such concerns to rest. “Mass tourism will become history in the future,” Tanes stated.

Thailand will likely be the envy of many destination marketing bodies, going by traditional tourism performance markers. With the exception of the coup year in 2014, Thailand’s inbound arrivals have been on an upward trajectory in the last decade, with the Chinese market a major driving force to push its annual tourist numbers to over 35 million in 2017, equivalent to half of the country’s population. But Tanes Petchsuwan, Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) deputy governor for marketing communication, acknowledged that a different game plan is now needed – and it’s no longer about pursuing numbers. “Increasing visitors is not a challenge – we’re already very good at it,” Tanes remarked. “But the challenge now is how to balance 35 million for different markets, segments, etc, to ensure that they’re traveling at the right time, to the right places and delivering true benefits to communities,” he continued, emphasizing that dispersal of tourists is critical. Of the opinion that NTOs should give greater weight to social and environmental responsibility in their destination marketing, Tanes revealed that the TAT takes into account the carrying capacity as well as the market segment that each destination is suited for.
Major infrastructure boost needed says Thailand’s Tourism Sports Ministry permanent secretary Pongpanu Svetarundra Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry permanent secretary Pongpanu Svetarundra says that “Thailand has under-invested in facilities when considering the country’s aggressive growth in tourists,” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the Asean-Korea Tourism Investment Seminar 2018 in Seoul. “If we continue to delay investment to develop the country’s infrastructure – such as investment for the third phase of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Laem Chabang Port phase three, high-speed trains, etc – the country will not have the capacity to serve the expanded number of tourists visiting the country,” he said. To speed up infrastructure development, the country must open up investment in projects to the private sector under public-private partnerships, and also make it easier for foreign investors to expand their investments in infrastructure or tourist businesses by offering them incentives, Pongpanu said. Thailand also needed to relax some of its rules that limit the opportunity for foreign investment in the country’s service sector, which now limits investment only to local investors, he said. This would help the country to improve services for foreign tourists. The country, meanwhile, needed to improve skills among service sector workers, particularly language skills, Pongpanu said, noting that many local people lack the ability to communicate with foreign tourists visiting Thailand. As well, the expected strong growth of the tourism business called for developing the nation’s innovation-based industries and digital transformation to meet the demand from foreign tourists, he said. “If we speed up improving the country’s capacity to serve a rising number of tourists, we are confident that Thailand will maintain its market leadership for international tourists in the Asean bloc,” he said. “Our Asean strategy is one destination for 10 countries. We try to cooperate to reduce the problems for foreign tourists to visit 10 countries in Asean, especially the process to create one Asean visa for 10 countries that is underway,” said the permanent secretary. Professional women’s tennis is heading back to Thailand for the first time since 2015 as Hua Hin is set to host the WTA Thailand Open 2019, a new International-level event on January 28 - February 3, 2019. “Thailand has not hosted any major professional tennis tournaments for a long time so it is with great pleasure that we announce this new tournament,” said Former Deputy Prime Minister and tournament Advisory Chairman Suwat Liptapanlop. “It is a wonderful opportunity for young Thai tennis players to compete against top players from around the globe and develop their skills at this tournament. “In the past, the seaside town has welcomed several top tennis stars such as Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters to participate in exhibition matches. He says “to construct a development of this scale, you need to be a builder, not just a property speculator.” Chris has a passion for quality and building standards. He understands the problems many building projects experience when taking short cuts, rather than ensuring best practice, becomes the building mantra. “She’ll be right mate” may be the Australian equivalent of the Thai expression “mai ben rai”; but you’ll never hear Chris uttering those words when it comes to his responsibilities at Sansara!
Chris has been instrumental in Sansara completing an Environment Impact Assessment or EIA. The EIA is defined as “an analysis of the potential impacts, both positive and negative, of different types of projects or activities on the environment, conditions or circumstances that may affect those projects or activities, and measures for prevention, control and rectification before commencement of the projects or activities.” The EIA process has been applied in Thailand as a tool for environmental planning and management on development projects since 1981. It establishes appropriate mitigation measures so that Thailand’s natural resources will be used efficiently to the economic benefit and continued development of Thailand.
Topics covered in the EIA include waste-water treatment, energy efficiency, solid waste management, traffic, air quality, soil and groundwater pollution, noise pollution, nature conservation, landscape, public health, visual aspects and social economic factors. It involves an independent environmental consultant to evaluate and draft a report which clearly identifies the environmental impacts related to the project under assessment. Completing this assessment is a major undertaking which may be avoided by developers not prepared to have this external scrutiny. That’s just one of the short cuts they may take. Chris says that if a new development is surrounded by protective fencing for dust management, it’s likely to be subject to the EIA. But as the EIA considers many issues which will later affect home owners such as ground water pollution, EIA completion should be on the radar of any prospective purchaser.

335 About the Rules The Pros Getting It Wrong
One of the most talked about rulings in professional golf occurred on the 18th hole in Valderramah when Seve Ballesteros needed a par to tie with Bernhard Langer for the Volvo Masters title. But Seve had pushed his tee shot right with his ball coming to rest in loose soil from a hole, behind a large cork tree. After carefully examining the lie of the ball the Spaniard called the Tour Referee, John Paramor, for a ruling. He felt that his ball was lying in earth which had been removed by whatever had dug the hole and that he may be entitled to relief from the condition under Rule 25-1, Abnormal Ground Condition.
Gophers, thanks to Caddyshack, are probably the bestknown burrowing animals to golfers; but not dogs! Paramor explained that relief without penalty would only be available if the hole had been made by a burrowing animal and the cast (loose earth) was deemed to interfere with the lie of the ball or the area of his intended swing. . “Note: A hole made by a non-burrowing animal, such as a dog, is not an abnormal ground condition unless marked or declared as ground under repair.”
After a thorough search of the area around the ball the official came to the conclusion that there was no evidence that the hole had been made by a burrowing animal and ruled that the ball must be played as it lay, or could be deemed unplayable for a penalty stroke. The position of the ball made this a crucial ruling; if Seve had been permitted to drop the ball within one club-length of the nearest point of relief from the condition he would have had a clear shot to the green. However, despite over 20 minutes of animated discussion, with Seve utilising his renowned expertise in pressure persuasion, Paramor refused to change his original ruling, so that the only possible shot that Seve could make was to chip out sideways, meaning that his chance of victory was gone. Seve’s fellow competitor, Colin Montgomerie, who had to stand aside as the debate raged on, was not so diplomatic when asked for his opinion on the incident. He curtly replied; “He was trying it on.”

6 34 Nationwide Crackdown on World Cup Gambling Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan has instructed police to crack down on football gambling during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
As part of the operation – dubbed “Pitakpai Dulaeprachachon 61” (guarding from harm and taking care of public members in the year 2018) – Police General Chalermkiat had also proposed that some 1,000 websites linked to football betting be shut down and around 1,000 “Net Idol” celebrities in Thai social media, who are based across the country and allegedly appear in football-gambling advertisements, be investigated. The nationwide crackdown has targeted both gambling dens and online betting sites. It has been reported that 3,000 people have been detained after physical raids. Although financial institutions and phone service operators helped shut down some websites, Thai police admit they are
fighting an uphill battle when it comes to the digital realm. “You can catch physical gambling pools or arrest gamblers in the den. But it is almost impossible to track down those masterminds, both Thais and foreigners, behind online football gambling rings as most of them operated betting websites from Cambodia where gambling was legal under the neighboring country’s law,” said Phanurat Lakboon, Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) deputy commissioner. If found guilty, under Article 12 of the Gambling Act, anyone who arranges for or promotes others to gamble can be punished with a one-year jail term and/or a 1,000 THB fine, he added. If children are involved, their parents can face a 10,000 THB fine or three months in jail.

Deputy National Police Chief Chalermkiat Srivorakhan noted that gambling activity was higher than recorded during the 2014 tournament “because people have easy access to football gambling websites via mobile phones.” Hua Hin police have recently investigated a number of local commercial premises which have been offering gambling services on a large scale and arrested over 20 individuals as well as confiscating computors and SIM cards. No reports that bars offering ‘cup sweeps’ or similar gambling activities have been targeted. However as the finals of the FIFA World Cup draw closer, it may be noted that such activities render participants liable to Police attention and prosecution.

Brooks Koepka First to Win Back-to-Back U.S.Opens in 29 Years
US golfer Brooks Koepka battled through two tough final days at Shinnecock Hills to become the first repeat winner at the U.S. Open since Curtis Strange in 1988-89 and just the second since Ben Hogan in 1950-51.
Koepka not only had to battle 54-hole co-leader and playing partner Dustin Johnson, he had to keep his eye on a leaderboard that saw Masters champion Patrick Reed make a run and Tommy Fleetwood shoot the sixth 63 in U.S. Open history earlier in the day. Fleetwood entered the clubhouse at 2-over par, and after both Koepka and Johnson bogeyed the 11th hole, Fleetwood’s score looked strong enough to put him in contention for a playoff. But when Koepka knocked his approach shot snug on 16 to push the lead to even par with two holes to play, there was no question that he was
going clear every hurdle Shinnecock Hills provided. Round 4 was all about execution. Koepka was all over the pins early in the round, with birdies on three of the first five holes. When the wind picked up in the afternoon, he did as good a job scrambling as anyone on the course. He was lights out on the greens, burying tough putts from 5-10 feet when his playing partner couldn’t buy a birdie putt. Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat finished in 15th place, finishing with a final round of 75 for 9 over par total to lock his PGA Tour Card for next season.

The Seniors World Cup is organised by the Seniors Football Association of Thailand and supported by the Thai FA. The inaugural tournament was played in 2006, following the devastating tsunami that had hit the country sixteen months earlier. It was part of the process to re-establish tourism, as well as bring additional football coaching to underprivileged children in the country. It has now been played annually for thirteen years with different provinces in Thailand hosting it on each occasion. Against all odds, the Thailand team won the cup in 2009 in Udon Thani, however as the invitational tournament has gone from strength to strength, the majority of countries now feature exprofessionals and former internationals in their squads. The England squad is comprised mainly of Professional Footballers’ Association members. Eight countries participated in this year’s event; they were Thailand, England, Scotland, Australia, Iran, USA, New Zealand and Taiwan. The youngest players permitted are 38 years old, but squads have seven players 44 - 49 years old and seven aged over 50.
Matches were split between one of Asia’s premier sports complexes, True Arena and the Hua Hin Stadium at Kho Takiab. The atmosphere in the stands was jovial, whereas on the pitch, things were much more competitive.
The final was played between England and Scotland, with the Kiwi team adding plenty of atmosphere in the stands as they sang all match long. Fall In Love With Prachuap Khiri Khan
TAT Prachuap and Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall came together on Friday June 15 to celebrate and showcase the wonders of the eight districts of the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan. This thirteen day event was officially opened by local dignities in the Blú Parc area.
After the speeches and the cutting of the ribbon, which heralded the opening of the event, there were performances of cultural dancing and local music, along with the giving out of over a thousand pineapples to visitors. Eighty nine chefs and local identities cooked one of the provinces favourite dishes for the onlookers; a Pineapple Crab Curry.
Throughout Blúport there were three further zones to attract visitors; Blú Hall, on the first floor, had over twenty five travel and tourism providers showcasing hotel and tour packages. The ground floor focused on local food in the Event Port area, with many of Hua Hin’s 5 star hotels setting up stalls. Port Walk, in the basement, focused on activities which appealed to all age groups; there were many sports including
archery, a playground for the younger kids, as well as a BB gun firing range; kids both young and old were entertained for hours. The One Tambon One Product
(OTOP) initiative again proved popular, with their stand inundated; they sold local fruits as well as products specifically from the area.

Charity Hua Hin provides help in the form of financial or medical support for local families who are unable to take care of themselves, due physical handicaps and in some cases old age disabilities. This monthly stipend will allow Charity Hua Hin to take on more families to help. Charity Hua Hin is run 100% by volunteers and all money donated to their organisation goes to their help these families with all administrative costs covered by the volunteers. The Hua Hin Hospital helps to identify families that are not coping financially or need additional help for a better quality of life.

Many disabled people in Thailand struggle to live and buy necessities, as they only receive an 800 THB handout from the government per month, which does not cover food or medical needs. This is where Charity Hua Hin steps in to give a helping hand by finding out what is needed for each specific family and helping them get the items needed. The Hua Hin Business Network is a Non-Profit organisation, made up of volunteers from the local business community that helps other businesses to promote themselves, but also uses their combined efforts to fund raise and donate it to deserving charities. Jelly Beans from Hell: The new Thai Snacks Made from World’s Hottest Pepper
Thailand’s Food and Drugs Administration has warned parents not to feed their children “Hell Spicy Jelly” jelly beans; advertised to contain Carolina Reaper, the world’s hottest pepper.
Dr. Poonlap Chantaweejittawong from the FDA warned people not to prank their friends with the jelly beans as eating ultra spicy snacks could cause irritation to the abdomen and could be very dangerous if their friends were allergic. Eating the spicy bear-shaped snacks, which have actually been approved by FDA, has turned into an internet challenge. The product is popular amongst celebrity Thai You Tubers, who may or may not have been paid to do a video on the product. Responding to the social media craze, Dr. Poonlap said the FDA suspects that the firm producing the treats may be guilty of mislabelling the product as it’s hard to imagine a jelly bean billed as 1 percent chilli could be this spicy.
Carolina Reaper – the hottest pepper in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. The candy’s manufacturer, C.M. Gummy, who originally registered the product as “chilli-flavoured gelatine snacks,” could be fined 30,000 THB for that.

The asparagus has a long and storied history. It was mentioned in the myths and the scholarly writings of ancient Greece, and its cultivation was the subject of a detailed lesson in Cato the Elder’s treatise, On Agriculture. But it wasn’t until the turn of the 18th century that discussion of the link between asparagus and odorous urine emerged.
In 1731, John Arbuthnot, physician to Queen Anne, noted in a book about food that asparagus “affects the urine with a
foetid smell ... and therefore have been suspected by some physicians as not friendly to the kidneys.” Benjamin Franklin also noticed that eating asparagus “shall give our urine a disagreeable odor.” Since then, there has been debate over what is responsible for the stinky pee phenomenon. Polish chemist and doctor Marceli Nencki identified a compound called methanethiol as the cause in 1891, after a study that involved four men eating about three and a half pounds of asparagus apiece. In 1975, Robert H. White, a chemist at the University of California at San Diego, used gas chromatography to pin down several compounds known as S-methyl thioesters as the culprits. Other researchers have blamed various “sulfur-containing compounds” and, simply, “metabolites.” More recently, a study demonstrated that asparagusic acid taken orally by subjects known to produce stinky asparagus pee produced odorous urine, which contained the same volatile compounds found in their asparagus-induced odorous urine. Other subjects, who normally didn’t experience asparagus-induced odorous
urine, likewise were spared stinky pee after taking asparagusic acid. The researchers concluded that asparagusic acid and its derivatives are the precursors of urinary odor. The various compounds that contribute to the distinct smell—and were sometimes blamed as the sole cause in the past—are metabolized from asparagusic acid. Exactly how these compounds are produced as we digest asparagus remains unclear, so let’s turn to an equally compelling, but there is more answerable question. WHY DOESN’T ASPARAGUS MAKE YOUR PEE SMELL FUNNY? Several studies have shown that only some of us experience stinky pee (ranging from 20 to 40 percent of the subjects taking part in the study, depending on which paper you read), while the majority have never had the pleasure.
For a while, the world was divided into those whose pee stank after eating asparagus and those whose didn’t. Then in 1980, a study complicated matters: Subjects whose pee stank sniffed the urine of subjects whose pee didn’t. It turns out we’re not only divided by the ability to produce odorous asparagus pee, but the ability to smell it. An anosmia—an inability to perceive a smell—keeps certain people from smelling the compounds that make up even the most offensive asparagus pee, and like the stinky pee non-producers, they’re in the majority. Producing and perceiving asparagus pee don’t go hand-in-hand, either. The 1980 study found that some people who don’t produce stinky pee could detect the rotten cabbage smell in another person’s urine. On the flip side, some stink producers aren’t able to pick up the scent in their own urine or the urine of others.

Central Plaza Hotel Plc (Centel) plans to invest 35 billion THB in hotel and food business over the next five years, aiming to double revenue to 40 billion THB by 2022.

For food, Centel will focus on expansion beyond shopping malls, including online and delivery services. This year, refurbishment of two flagship hotels, Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui and Centara Grand in Hua Hin, is expected to use millions of baht. “The two flagship properties will be operated under

new luxury brands after renovation,” the company said. Centel also will renovate Centara Grand at Central World in the fourth quarter, with the work expected to conclude within 1824 months. Under the five-year plan, Centel aims to enter non-mall markets such as hospitals, office buildings, train stations and standalone stores.
