In the past Hua Hin Today tried valiantly to provide information about results, fixtures and other local football news but this proved to be ‘mission impossible’. We shared the frustrations of ardent football followers who were unable to find out even the most basic information. 6 Hua Hin City FC Reborn; a New Management Team For a New Future There have been some big developments on the local football scene and the future is looking bright for the Hua Hin City Football Club. New management, new sponsorship, new supporter friendly arrangements and new players coming suggest that the days of confusion and disappointment are in the past. Hua Hin City was founded in 2011 with the Club currently playing in Thai League 4 Western region. However all those connected with the Club are optimistic that progression to higher divisions and becoming a much more prominent force in the Thailand football scene is awaiting. The ‘Dream Bigger’ mantra about to be realised.

New Players Director Francis has moved quickly to secure the services of around 25 new players for a rejuvenated playing list based in Hua Hin which will become available for the second half of the current season from 17th June. Francis is also managing the ‘2 touch Soccer School’ for football education, sports activities and events for children aged 4 to 14 with coaching by ex-professional players and experienced teachers. Francis hails from Ghana and has a lifetime of football experience, coaching since retiring from professional play in Thailand in 2010.

8 The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin Welcomes a ‘Can-Do’ President
Following the installation night on 27th May, the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin has inducted a new President. Swedish national Dr Birger Rexed will be taking over from the outgoing and then Immediate Past President Gianni Battistini on 1st July. Professionally Dr Rexed is a Swedish medical doctor with the international Rotary movement long being at the forefront of his approach to life. He was virtually born into Rotary and has been a contributing Member for some 30 years. His ‘induction’ into the ideals of Rotary began as a Member of ‘Round Table’, an organisation for the younger generation to connect with peers which follows Rotary ideals. Rotary membership in Sweden followed and inevitably continued with residence in Hua Hin. Around six years as a Member of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin with responsibility for Club Membership and as Secretary was followed by acceptance of the Presidency position. As a doctor, Dr Rexed has broadened his perspective from general practice to obstetrics and gynecology to medical consultancy and occupational health. A theme that emerges is to look at the bigger picture; including working with companies to improve both the health of the organisation as well as the health of employees. It’s about bigger solutions to achieve sustainable outcomes. Healthier and happier employees and leaders mean improved and more profitable companies. Dr Rexed had been a frequent visitor to Thailand which led to him developing a holiday house in Hua Hin in 2008. He is now a resident with his wife Karina alongside the Palm Hills golf course, but certainly not as retirees. After a casual conversation with the CEO of MedHelp Sweden, he learnt about the difficulties for nurses providing advice to Swedish callers to a help line after hours and during weekends. The answer was to take advantage of the time difference of 5 or 6 hours between Sweden and Thailand.

His company MediCall now employs around 40 Swedish nurses who live in Hua Hin to take these calls. For the nurses this is ‘working in paradise’ rather than during long cold winter nights or weekends in Sweden. This has become a ‘win-win’ solution, imagined and put into operation by Dr Rexed’s company. Participation is a Rotary Club principle which means that members must be ‘doers’ rather than talkers. It’s very obvious that Dr Rexed more than meets that requirement. He loves a challenge, says “we can do this,” and then gets it done. That’s an approach which will guide his Presidency and continue the fine service traditions of Rotary’s work amongst the Hua Hin community. Footnote: A small snippet of our conversation with Dr Rexed revealed his sense of humour and a potential nickname. He mentioned that the first syllable of his last name; ‘Rex’, could be translated from Latin as ‘King’. Put that together with a slightly different version of his first name Birger and you have ‘Burger King’! Maybe fast food will be on the menu of the next weekly Rotary lunch meeting. 12 million Tourists Visit Thailand in First 4 Months Thailand has been visited by 12 million foreign tourists in the first four months of this year, generating more than 800 billion THB.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, 2,827 million foreigners visited Thailand in April, 1,877 million of whom were from East Asia, followed by Europe and South Asia.
The actual shows are slated for the soft sandy beach on Saturday and Sunday, June 24-25, 2017, with Thailand’s own Hitman Jazz and Koh Mr. Saxman leading the festival organisation and arranging the main orchestra.

Between January and April 2017, the Land of Smiles welcomed 12.02 million people from overseas, creating a 2.91% rise in visitor numbers. The industry generated more than 800 billion THB for the country, an increase of 4.71% compared to the same period last year. The ministry has instructed tourism and security related agencies to keep all tourists safe and keep hospitality standards high, in the hope of increasing the country’s tourism revenue. (NNT)

Budget Sought to Keep Elephants from Hua Hin Farmland
A local administrative organisation in Hua Hin district is seeking approval from provincial authorities to set aside 29 million THB to put up fences to keep wild elephants away from farmland. Sunantha Pimthai, chairwoman of Huai Sat Yai tambon administration organization (TAO) in Hua Hin district, said wild elephants from Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi had left the jungle to raid crops and farmland, affecting people in 11 villages in this tambon. Pineapples, as well as durian and jackfruit trees and other crops, had been damaged by hungry pachyderms which raided the farmland every year, particularly during the drought, said Sunantha. Frequent raids by jumbos forced villagers to stay overnight at their farmland to guard their crops. Park Rangers Keeping an eye on elephants on a rural road. The TAO has recently sought a 29 million THB budget from Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial authorities to put up fences in the eastern side of the tambon from Village Moo 1 to Village Moo 9, covering the distance of 40 km, said the TAO chairwoman. The fence project was a long-term measure to prevent crop-raiding elephants from entering farmland.
To solve the pressing problem, the local body set up patrol teams to prevent wild elephants from raiding crops. She has also sought cooperation from local people not to erect electrified fences around their farmland following the deaths of some elephants. Wildlife officials recently found three dead elephants in tambon Huai Sat Yai which they suspect may have died from eating contaminated crops. – Bangkok Post
11 Funeral Plans for the Late King of Thailand Confirmed Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej will be cremated on October 26th, says Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam with the palace confirming the government’s plan. A senior government official has added that the king’s funeral will take place over a five day period.
Several golden chariots are in the royal inventory, including one around 11 metres tall with a pinnacle at the top symbolizing the ascent to heaven that will bear the king’s body this year. Supaporn Saiprasith, a Department of Fine Arts official supervising 50 volunteers who are refinishing artifacts, said she has to make sure the royal chariot looks as if it was just made, “to make sure it is restored well enough to suit the honor of our late king.”
Confirmation of the cremation date sets a timeframe for the coronation of Bhumibol’s son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who ascended the throne in December but whose formal coronation has been put on hold until after his father’s funeral. Political observers say the new king’s coronation will formally kick-start politics following a year-long mourning period and a general election should follow soon after.
King Bhumibol died in October 2016 at the age of 88 following a long illness. His death ended a seven-decade reign that saw the king become a rare unifying figure in the nation. Officials have said King Bhumibol’s cremation will be a lavish affair befitting of a much-loved monarch. No budget has been publicly released for the funeral which is expected to attract huge crowds.

National Legislative Assembly Deputy Chief Launches Road Safety Campaign
The National Legislative Assembly’s (NLA) Vice President has launched a campaigning caravan promoting road safety, promoting awareness on the main causes of road accidents. The NLA Vice President Surachai Liengboonlertchai has presided over the road safety promoting campaign opening by the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation in cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Royal Thai Police and private companies.
According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT) led by its president Mr Stanley Kang had a meeting with Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Suvit Maesincee at Government House and voiced confidence in the country’s economy. The minister thanked the JFCCT team for the continued confidence in Thailand’s economic potential and good cooperation with the government, as well as the effort to push forward government’s policies and measures towards concrete results. The JFCCT chief thanked the minister and the Thai government for supporting foreign business operations in Thailand, but the JFCCT is now concerned with regulations
for work permits and visas which make it difficult for foreigners to invest in Thailand. The minister said the government is facilitating foreign investors, and is now considering the streamlining of unnecessary laws, and make amendments to laws which create unnecessary complex procedures aiming to improve the service to be quicker and more transparent. He said it is the government’s priority to improve the work permit and visa request procedures in order to enhance the competitiveness and assist foreign business persons. Agri Ministry Aims to Introduce One million Rai of Organic Farmland in Five Years
He has said the event is held in line with the United Nations’ suggestions for member states to promote road safety practices. The event calls for road users to cease all risky behaviours, including driving under influence, overspeeding, riding motorcycles without wearing helmets, and driving when sleepy. Global statistics show there are 1.2 million fatalities annually from road accidents, with Thailand being the second country with the most fatalities from road accidents. The Kingdom ranks as the country with the most fatalities from road accidents in Asia. The campaign held today is aimed to raise the awareness on road safety leading to the reduction of this number. Activities in this campaign include the caravan of ancient cars, the parade of volunteer cyclists, and vehicles from partner agencies and companies. The caravan traveled from the United Nations building in circle along Krung Kasem road to Sam Sen road, to Rajdamnoen Avenue passing by the Democracy Monument, the Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Royal Thai Army Headquarters, before finishing back at the United Nations building. Meanwhile the Director-General of the Department of Land Transport Sanit Promwong has warned of scammers who claim that they can issue a driver’s license without tests, saying that only the department or government transportation offices are authorized to issue a driver’s license. The director-general elaborated that application for any type of driver’s license must conform to the regulations of the Department of Land Transport and it has the same standards nationwide. People who apply for a driver’s license must complete all tests by themselves. ATTA Urges Formation of Tourism Watchdog The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) is proposing the appointment of a body to protect tourists and operators from fraud.
The Ministry of Agriculture will encourage farmers to turn to organic crops with an aim to increase organic rice-planting areas by one million rai within five years. Deputy Agriculture Minister Chutima Boonyaprapat said that rice farmers who join the program would be given subsidies for the first three years because, during the initial period, their organic rice yield was expected to drop by about half of what they used to get for traditional non-organic rice farming which is heavily dependent on chemicals such as chemical fertilizer and pesticides.

The ATTA Vice President, Surawat Akaraworamat has disclosed that ATTA members would put forward the idea of setting up a Watchdog group to assist the public sector and private tourism agencies in the crusade against tour scams.
Tourist police earlier reported that a group of 25 Thai people had been duped into paying 39,900 THB each by an unlicensed tour guide who claimed to have arranged a trip to Russia which in fact had not been confirmed.
Mr. Surawat said the watchdog would alert tourists to any risks involving bogus or illegal tour agents which would in turn enable police to capture the wrongdoers more easily. The idea came amidst growing complaints about illegal foreign tour agents taking advantage of their customers and local businesses.

The World Health Organisation provides shocking figures which show only 7% of children on the road wear helmets riding with their parents on motorbikes or 93% of children risking their lives every day going to and from school. 15 Fighting Against Dengue The most recent report by the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Disease Control reports that as of May 9th, 9,717 cases had been registered and 14 individuals had died.
There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Treatment is directed at relieving signs and symptoms. The dengue fever vaccine was approved by the Thai Food and Drugs Administration late last year and is now available at selected hospitals. However, it is out of reach for many Thais as the cost is more than 10,000 THB for the three injections. Efficacy is around 65.6 percent and is most viable for those aged nine to 45 years.
The latest campaign organized by the BMA adopted a new approach to awareness raising. Rather than handing out leaflets and conducting a massive fumigation program, the administration organised three days of activities at CentralWorld on the theme “Fighting against Dengue”. Other preventive measures include wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts or using a mosquito repellent containing DEET when visiting places where dengue is endemic. Avoid areas with standing water and stay indoors in the morning until two hours after sunrise and at sunset to further reduce your risk of being bitten. The rainy season appears to have arrived early this year and Dr Methipot Chatameteekul, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Communicable Disease Control Division, admits to being worried. Rain can increase the risks of an epidemic of the Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) virus and even though the public has learned that a “common” fever can lead to death, as occurred in the case of TV actor Trisdee “Por” Sahawong last year, there is still a need to raise awareness about dengue fever.
Dengue fever was first identified in Thailand more than 50 years ago, first in Bangkok before spreading throughout the country. In the last 50 years, dengue has become endemic in 128 countries that are home to some 4 billion people About 75 percent of the infection occurs in Asia, and most of it in Southeast Asia.
The new vaccine is expected to protect against the four dengue strains found in Thailand Mrs. Wiriya Yuyen, the chief officer of the disease prevention and control unit, the Division of Public Health and Environment of the Hua Hin Municipality, has visited Nong Kae Community with her staff and public health volunteers to launch a campaign about dengue prevention during the upcoming rainy season. According to WHO, more than 740 people around the world are infected by dengue every minute. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the Aedes aegypti species, better known in Thai as yung laai. They are most active in the daytime. According to Dr Methipot, the epidemic in Bangkok tends to soar from August to October. The latest severe epidemic was 2015 where Thailand reported 142,925 cases and 104 deaths.
Dr Methipot is also worried that the number of cases will be higher than last year. “The disease goes in a cycle, with major outbreaks occurring every two or three years. In 2015, we saw 50 new patients every day in each district. I am concerned that we will see a severe outbreak but hope it won’t be as severe as that of 2015,” he says.
Symptoms starts with a high fever (about 40 degrees C) that persists for two to seven days and is accompanied by any two of the following symptoms: severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands or rash.
The campaign primarily aims to raise the awareness of Nong Kae residents about the fatal consequences of dengue, the disease spread by aedes, a type of mosquito frequently found in the rainy season. Abate is added to water containers to prevent mosquitos breeding Protection from dengue is involves turning over any unused bowls and basins, and cleaning them regularly so that Aedes cannot breed. Abate sand should be put in objects that contain still water to kill the mosquito larva. Resolving Water Quality Problems In Hua Hin The mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, along with the deputy mayor Mr. Montree Chuphu, Municipal Council member Mr. Cheep Suksee, the director of the Municipality’s Water Work Division Mr. Prayuth Yeunnuwong and municipal staff, have visited a new water treatment plant and reservoirs in Hua Hin to monitor recent water problems.
The reason for the visit was to follow up from complaints made through social media and to the press in Bangkok by residents of Ban Takiab, Nong Kae and Khao Phithak that the tap water was not clean enough and looked murky. Upon the visit to Pranburi Dam, Khao Laeng and Khong Hua Na reservoirs, the municipal officers found that the amount of water in the dam was less than the last time with only 130 million cubic metres of water being stored. In addition, water released was murky and has some weed and algae. At the Khao Laeng reservoir and water plant, the amount of water for the filtering process was normal. However, some processed water released was murky
because of sediment remaining in the water pipe. After the visiting the plant, the municipal staff and executives went to a nearby site where a water pipe is being installed with a budget of 900 million THB. The pipe will be able to send more water for consumption to Hua Hin, beginning in 2019. Finally, the municipal staff and executives visited water filtering plants in Hua Na, Khao Laeng and Rai Nun to study the possibility of improving the existing water plants. The Hua Hin Municipality has another project to construct a new water plant in Boh Fai to solve water shortage problems in the long term.
The Hua Hin Mayor, Director of the Waterworks Division and the Manager of Pranburi Provincial waterworks Authority also conducted a press conference and presented preliminary conclusions. He stated that the filtering system at Pranburi Dam still had problems and water pipes are old. Municipal officers are now working hard to solve this problem. Mr. Nopporn also talked about water problems in Nong Phai Community where farmers burned some crops and accidentally damaged a 120 metre HDPE (high-density polyethylene) water pipe. After fixing the pipe, some sediment may remained in the pipe and then found in the water. The Hua Hin Mayor also spoke about new HDPE water pipes were being installed in many areas. As the pipes are replaced cleaner water will become available for consumption.
In terms of water development in Boh Fai, the Hua Hin Mayor and Prachuab Khirikhan Governor have formulated a plan to transfer water directly from Phetchaburi Dam to a water filtering plant by the Khok Ma valley. The Royal Irrigation Department will work with Phetchaburi Dam to launch closedwater system with budget of 994 million THB. This project will be completed in 2019 and local people living in the upper area from Phetchaburi Dam can have sufficient water for consumption. Mr. Nopporn also added that, if murky water is found in any areas of Hua Hin, it is more effective to inform either the Mayor or the officers of Waterworks Division than by posting complaints on Facebook or Line. He also asked the Waterworks Division to develop both short and long term plans to solve water problems in Hua Hin sustainably and propose them to the municipal executives for further consideration

You May Be Prone To Fatty Liver Disease Fatty liver disease, or Hepatic Steatosis, is becoming getting more common in Thailand. The occurrence of the disease signals metabolic abnormalities in your body; such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The disease usually occurs to those whose age in between 45-50 years old. This group of people may have a slow metabolism. This article is to raise awareness about fatty liver disease, and its importance. Fatty liver is a condition where fat build up in the liver in the form of triglycerides. Fat buildup is a precursor to disease. It may have no symptoms at all, or it may cause hepatitis. If hepatitis occurs and left unattended for more than 6 months, the liver may become fibrosis or cirrhosis. Nevertheless, fatty liver may also occur in people with other conditions; such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and more. However, only fatty liver caused by high triglyceride levels will be mentioned in this article. Triglyceride is a type of fat found in blood. It can be gained from the food we eat and also from synthesis of the liver. Examples of food that raise the level of
triglycerides are sugar, flour, dessert, fruit, and fat from animals and plants; such as coconut milk, vegetable oil, butter, milk; beef, pork, chicken, and more. Alcohol consumption also makes triglycerides level higher. So you can see that much of the food around us contains triglycerides, meaning we are all prone to fatty liver. In addition to fatty liver, high triglyceride levels also increase the risk of coronary disease, ischemic heart disease, paralysis, and paresis. In general, fatty liver symptoms slowly develop. It usually takes more than 10 years to develop cirrhosis. Its symptom is also not specific, which is why it should be of concern. Many patients become aware of abnormalities into their liver and found out about fatty liver accidentally from their yearly health checkup. If blood test results show a high level of AST and ALT, it usually means that you have hepatitis. Fatty liver can also be found through ultrasound. Pisuea Samut beckoning her lover Phra Apai Mani Puktien is a famous place and very popular with Thai people, including groups of school children, wanting to discover the legend of Phra Aphai Mani, an epic 3,000 line story from one of Thailand’s greatest poets Sunthon Phu. The largest statue out to sea may be reached during low tide is that of Pisuea Samut, the Butterfly of the Sea, a giant who transformed herself into a woman when she fell in love with Phra Apai Mani, the eponymous hero of the poem. She is beckoning her lover Phra Apai Mani with an outstretched hand. These unique and mystical statues either on land, on rocky offshore islands or just standing in the water. They provide a real surprise for those who stumble across the beach without knowing what to expect. 19 All Provinces Preparing for Cremation of the Late King
The Ministry of Interior is coordinating with all provinces to make preparations for the cremation of the late King Rama IX in October. The Mayor of Hua Hin has encouraged local people to join in these preparations Permanent Secretary for Interior Grisada Boonrach held a video conference with provincial governors nationwide to discuss various undertakings ahead of the royal cremation ceremony for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on October 26th this year. According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, so far 878 venues have been prepared by the provinces for the royal function, which is to take place across the Kingdom. The venues include royal monasteries and other communal places that are easily accessible to mourners. As a large number of people are participating in the making of artificial sandalwood flowers, the Permanent Secretary encouraged the provinces to incorporate their own symbolic flowers in the process. All the flowers will be gathered in Bangkok seven days before being used in the cremation.

New Christian Group Founded in Hua Hin
The assistant to the Hua Hin mayor has recently established the Forget Me Not group, a new Christian group in Hua Hin available for Thais and foreigners.
According to Ms. Natthawan Mitdee, an assistant to the mayor of Hua Hin, the group, located at a house No. 136/359 in Soi 102 of Nong Kae Community, was founded by Thai women married to foreigners. The group is chaired by Mrs. Lek Modekasem, a Thai woman whose husband is American. There are now more 100 prospective Thai and foreign Members. The major aim of the Forget Me Not group is to unite members and encourage them to take part in Christian activities, including giving help to the community, especially the disadvantaged. The deputy mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Montree Chuphu, on behalf of the Hua Hin mayor, has chaired a general meeting of the ChaAm/Hua Hin Tourism Business Association at the Marrakesh Hua Hin Resort and Spa.
The main agenda of the meeting was to promote making Dok Mai Jan, a kind of wooden flower placed at cremation sites. The Hua Hin Municipality will invite a specialist who can make Dok Mai Jan to provide a course for anyone interested.
The group’s chairperson teaches Thai to foreigners and her husband is providing English classes to Thai children and adults. There are also classes in Thai and international cooking, traditional Thai massage, facial and hair beautification. Members also promote ethics according to the Bible. When they are together members remind each other of positive thinking, solidarity and unity. The group’s policy has recently been presented to the mayor of Hua Hin and the chief officer of the city’s local administration office. Mrs. Lek said that the Forget Me Not group was a Protestant Christians; however other Christians or people of other religions and beliefs are welcome to become members and join social activities.

24 Safe Highway U-Turns – ‘If U Don’t Know, Don’t Go’!
Anyone who has spent time on the roads of Thailand would have seen an ‘Accident Ahead’ sign which probably resulted in a wry smile; understanding this is a hazard warning rather than a dire prediction. The Golden Rule
Unless you are absolutely sure that you can complete the U-Turn in safety, Don’t Go! Do you really know what’s coming?
Large Vehicles However U-Turns on major highways are a real predictor of an awaiting accident. Negotiating U-turns on the highways of Thailand have a major impact on the horrific road fatality statistics of the Kingdom. Thailand’s already dismal road safety record sank to new lows over the 2017 New Year holiday as more than 400 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. In all, 426 people died on Thailand’s road between December 29th and January 3rd up from 340 for same period last year. Featuring as the world’s second highest country (behind Libya) for road fatalities per head of population, means that almost three people die on Thailand’s roads every hour. Road safety remains one of Thailand’s greatest public health challenges.
With U-Turn lanes usually accommodating traffic travelling in both directions, clear vision of oncoming vehicles may be blocked when both turning lanes are occupied. Additionally vehicles may be in the ‘shadow’ of a vehicle in another lane. Clearly seeing oncoming vehicles is not always easy but vital. If you can’t see what is coming there is no choice but to wait, despite the urging of those behind you. Becoming a ‘lane creeper’ means there’s every chance that a vehicle which has not adopted a defensive mode will be unable to avoid impact on the way through. Arrival time of oncoming vehicles
As far as we are aware there are no specific statistics about fatalities or other serious crashes relating to highway U-Turns, but it’s a fair guess to say they are very significant. With underpasses or overpasses being few and far between in our region, getting to your destination on the other side of a highway means negotiating a U-Turn. A prime example is the highway between Hua Hin and Cha-Am. Frequent commuters on this stretch of six lane highway will know this as a relatively straight road with a good surface. At last count there were 14 designated U-Turns from the airport overpass heading north until Cha-Am. That means 14 ‘accident ahead’ zones with far too many crashes on this main link between the two towns. With continuing growth of condo and resort developments on both sides of this highway so the hazards increase. Imagine if (or when) 6,500 vehicles from ‘The Energy’ returning to Bangkok all need to make a U-Turn after a holiday weekend!
So Why Are U-Turns So Dangerous? This is because there is a genuine risk of the vehicle making the turn being hit by on-coming traffic. Not only being hit, but being hit at speed! Crashes in built-up areas at low speeds still have risks to life and limb, but when vehicles on highways are travelling at speeds well in excess of the 90 km per hour legal limit, crashes are likely to result in disaster. The highway U-Turn is an unfamiliar traffic hazard for many foreign drivers to carefully consider. In line with an April televised message from the Prime Minister suggesting that more information be provided about how to stay safe on Thai road rather than just dwelling on the problems; here are some of the ways you can consider U-Turn safety. Look ahead and consider a lane change well before the U-Turn when a large vehicle will clearly have a wide turning circle and use the lane you are occupying, Doubling Up You cannot change lanes alongside the turning lane but this is also not wise well before entering the crash avoidance zone. At any time on the highway you should know if urgent lane changes can be safely executed. Always know the position of vehicles next to your lane.
Estimating the speed of oncoming vehicles can be difficult.  Research has demonstrated that individuals gauge the time-to-passage of smaller vehicles (including motor cycles) less accurately than larger vehicles. Night time estimates are also problematic. Research also indicated that older drivers feel the need for a larger gap than did younger drivers. However one alarming finding was that older drivers’ estimates of the minimum safe gap deteriorated when the speed of the oncoming vehicle increased. Younger drivers lengthened the gap as closing speed increased. However a serious problem is that many young drivers have little or no experience when they start driving and take too many risks! A likely corollary is that being older and inexperienced (especially with motorbikes) is double jeopardy.
Road rage is never a good response to traffic issues, but when you are waiting for your turn and another vehicle ignores the turning lane and swings in front of you, it’s hard to resist. Our only advice is to stay cool and maintain a defensive, non-aggressive approach. Chances are these drivers will become another statistic before too long.

A serious problem is that for many impatience kicks in when vehicles have their vision of oncoming traffic blocked. Then drivers creep forward into the lane of oncoming vehicles with tragic consequences. When approaching a busy or congested U-Turn it’s wise to anticipate ‘lane creep’.
If you are just completing a U-Turn or intending to cross all lanes and exit, be decisive and plan your vehicle’s position well in advance. Indecisive lane choice is another cause of accidents.
Choosing a lane is important for either completing a U-Turn or just passing through. If you are passing through, chances are that the middle lane will be the best option. This is to avoid those who may ‘creep’ into the outer lane. It is also common for markets to be near the inner lane with vehicles blocking or entering the inner lane and traffic (not just motor bikes) going against the flow.
Often drivers say after a crash “All of a sudden they were in front of me, I had no warning!” These drivers were probably not driving defensively or looking for hazards that could enter their crash avoidance zone. When approaching a U-Turn there is a yellow and black sign just before the turning lane. This is a warning that you are entering a crash avoidance zone and is your chance to survey the situation and to make choices. Making choices includes speed, lane positioning and ensuring that you are in a defensive mode. Whether you have right of way or not; crash avoidance should be your focus. The key to defensive driving is anticipation. The best way to anticipate is to ensure there is enough time to react and to make the safest decision.

If you are looking for an area to eat in Hua Hin that is not on the regular tourist map, head for the corner of Naebkehart Road and Soi 51. Soi 51, now the home of the minivan depot, has always had a multitude of food options. This is very much a Hua Hin locals’ haunt. The daytime sees Som Tam Thanon Tok, a well-known Isaan restaurant, with queues of people waiting to taste their Som Tam or grilled meats on weekends. Service is fast, so you’ll never wait long; it’s a must try. Just around the corner on Naebkehart are two other Hua Hin food institutions: Baan Thong Kham, doing traditional Isaan food and Ratama known for it’s duck; Pet Peloe is it’s specialty. Two popular places from morning to night
are Icy Beans, with their extensive icy drinks list, a menu of rice, noodles and spaghetti, plus the quirky Gallery Drip Coffee, where you can have all day brunch, or just a great cup of coffee. The area really hots up as the sun sets with street food favourites of Guay Tiaw Moo, a Chinese style noodle soup with a rich, fragrant broth, and Kha Moo, a beautifully succulent stewed pork knuckle. There’s also Cooking Mama, with their retro fitout,
which does a simple, yet tasty Thai menu, or try something from one of the popup street food stalls. If sweets are your thing, try Roti Gu, who do simply amazing things with Roti; traditional style or paper thin and crispy with condensed milk and chocolate - delectable! Milkman, a real local favourite, offers every possible variation on beverages with milk as well as desserts. If you are in the mood for beer or a wine, try the newly opened Le La Moon. With its indoor and outdoor seating, you can order some drinking food, relax and listen to live music or watch international football on the big screen. This area has everything; for Sushi, try Ninja Sushi; Swedish, try Tre Kronor; if burgers are your thing, there’s Burger 31. There are plenty of seaside locations as well like
CoCo 51 and Living Room; both are perfect places to unwind, eat and enjoy the Hua Hin coastline. There are late night venues where the younger crowd hang out, like Rungthor with their icy cold beers, to live music venues like Maquid and InFin, with vibes playing late into the night. Mister National Universe 2017 is coming to Hua Hin

30 Malaysia’s Historic City of Melaka; It’s Not Malacca! On 3rd May this year, the state government declared that the English name for the state and city is Melaka, rather than the commonly used Malacca.
Now stroll up St. Paul’s Hill and wander among the majestic trees and historical remnants around St Francis Xavier Church. Here, you can almost imagine the glories and miseries of the besieged lives of the Portuguese all those years ago, there are great views at the top. Melaka is the centre of Pernanakan culture. First a brief history; Melaka was founded by Parameswara, a Malay Sultan who was also called the last Raja of Singapura (Singapore) following a Majapahit attack in 1377. Admiral Chengo Ho a Muslim from China visited with gifts in the mid-15th Century and trade intensified. In August 1511 the Portuguese arriving from Goa India, conquering the town. In 1641, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese and captured Melaka, with the help of the Sultan of Johore. The Dutch ruled Melaka from 1641 to 1798. Property Sector Welcomes 99-year Leases
The private sector has expressed support for the government’s plan to extend long-term 99-year land leases to foreign investors. Suphin Mechuchep, the managing director of the property agency Jones Lang Lasalle (Thailand), agreed recently that the plan would boost foreign investors’ confidence to expand property investments in the special zones. The government’s plan would extend leaseholds in the special economic zones of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) from 30 to 99 years, with an initial lease of up to 50 years and a renewal of up to 49 years. Thai Condominium Association president Prasert Taedullayasatit “If the government opens up the opportunity for foreign buyers to hold residential leases for up to 99 years, like Singapore and Malaysia do, it will boost residential demand, as the country is the gateway to the ASEAN Economic Community [AEC],” said Thai Condominium Association president Prasert Taedullayasatit, who is also president of Premium Market at Pruksa Real Estate Plc. He said longer lease contracts for both residential and commercial property were better for businesses because foreign investors would have confidence to expand on investments in Thailand. “Although the current law allows a 30-year lease contract and a renewal for another 30 years, long-term leases are more reassuring for foreign investors,” he said.
When foreign investors have leasehold contracts for only 30 years, they are concerned about the future even though landowners may promise them that they can renew for another 30 years, real estate experts have said. There is always uncertainty because of the possibility that landowners will change their mind |in the interim period. Issara Boonyong, chief executive officer of Kanda Group and an adviser of the Business Housing Association, said the extended leasehold contracts from 30 years to be 99 years, which is limited to the EEC zones, would be seen by foreign investors as a key reason to expand their investments. It will not have any effect on local investors because the leaseholds would not involve the sale of land to foreigners, Issara said. However, Issara warned that conditions attached to the leases in regard to what foreigners are permitted to do must be clarified. – The Nation

353 Veranda to Build Condo Complex at Khao Takiab
Hotel and residential developer Veranda Resort and Spa Co will launch a high-end condo project worth 2.5 billion THB in Hua Hin to absorb demand for beachfront condos where supply is limited. Veranda president Verawat Ongvasith said the company bought a 14 Rai site with a 40 metre beachfront near Khao Takiab last year to develop a low-rise condo project with five buildings and a total of 263 units. “We are confident to have sales of 80-90% by the end of next year.” Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, managing director of property consultant CBRE Thailand, said there were only two new villa projects with unit prices from 30 million baht newly launched in Hua Hin last year. Meanwhile, no condo supply has been newly launched either on or near Hua Hin beach since 2013. The outstanding amount numbers about 9,900 units with a take-up rate of 80%.
“If there will be any transaction of beachfront land plots in Hua Hin, the price will reach 70-80 million THB per Rai,” Aliwassa said. “With limited land supply, new condo development will be in the high-end segment.”
Verawat said Veranda will develop a boutique hotel on the same plot of the Khao Takiab site with two four-story buildings and 39 rooms, aiming to add hospitality and property management services to the residential project.
The new condo project, called Veranda Residence Hua Hin, will have fully furnished units from 3.9 million THB.

Russian tourist arrivals to Thailand have continued to rebound in 2017, as the Russian ruble stays stable compared with other world currencies, including the Thai baht.In short, Russia’s long recession is officially over, reports Bloomberg. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office in Moscow does not expect Russian arrivals to the Kingdom to decrease after the success of 2016. Last year, Thailand welcomed more than one million tourists from Russia. The growth of Russian tourist arrivals to Thailand depends on the economic situation in Russia and the strength of the ruble to major world currencies. Right now the number of tourists is growing; in January-February, growth of 33% was recorded.
Researcher, Thanadon Sattabongkot said this week that it took his team eight years to develop the replacement for natural mangroves with a demonstrated ability to
speed up the accumulation of coastal soil to foster the growth of mangrove forests. The project began in 2007. Made from eco-friendly materials such as wood composites and natural rubber wood, the mangroves substitute can yield tangible results within four months of installation, and can last for up to 10 years. The means of substituting for mangroves is now one of 56 innovations registered with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). National News Bureau of Thailand
According to Thai Department of Tourism records, January-February 2016 saw 248,947 arrivals to Thailand from Russia. At least one million tourist arrivals from Russia are anticipated in 2017, providing the economic situation in the country remains favorable. To support arrivals growth, the TAT is planning to continue close cooperation with Russian tour companies, including financial and marketing support. In 2017, the TAT also aims to promote various spheres of niche tourism, including segments such as sports, weddings and honeymoons, health and recreation, active and luxury tourism.
The TAT will also promote family tourism, which is the key segment in the Russian market. Thai tourism authorities would like to lure more Russian families to the Eastern seaboard. Russian travel agencies have already announced plans to keep maintain charter flights to Thailand during the green season (May-Oct), thus providing one of the key foundations for affordable tours throughout the year. According to TAT statistics, last year more Russians traveled to Thailand during the green season than before. In 2016, some 68% of Russian tourists visited Thailand in winter and 32% in summer. In 2015, the distribution rate was 90% versus 10%.
Working in Thailand – When and Where to Apply for the Non-Immigrant ‘B’ Visa and the Work Permit APPLYING OUTSIDE THAILAND First Step: Non-Immigrant ‘B’ Visa The condition for applying for a Type ‘B’ Visa at the Thai Embassy, within your Own Country, in compliance with Thai Immigration Regulations, the Applicant needs to submit a W.P.3 to the Embassy. To apply for a W.P.3, the Employer is responsible for applying on behalf of the Applicant while the Applicant remains outside of Thailand. Once this document has been received by the Employer from the Ministry of Labour, it will only be valid for 30 days. The Employer will, therefore, apply for the W.P.3 30 days before the Applicant next comes to Thailand.
Once the Employer receives the papers they will send the WP3 together with the Company Documents of the Employer to the Applicant via the Postal Service. The Applicant is then required to take the document to the Thai Embassy in their own Country to apply for the Type’ ‘B Visa. Second Step: Work Permit When the Applicant arrives in Thailand, the Applicant will apply for the Work Permit by submitting Application and documentation required as stated below to the Labour Department. After approval of the Labour Department the Applicant will receive the Work Permit.
APPLYING INSIDE THAILAND First Step: Non-Immigrant ‘B’ Visa After arriving in Thailand and obtaining the 30 Day Transit Stamp or Tourist Visa, the Applicant needs to go to the Employer, who will then complete the necessary Immigration Forms to apply for a Change of Visa Status to a Non Immigrant ‘B’ Visa, which is required to work in Thailand. The Application Forms will be submitted to the Local Immigration Office, who will check all the details. Once everything is satisfactory, the Immigration Office will forward everything on to the Main Immigration Office in Bangkok for consideration. This will take approximately 14 days. Once the approval has been received you will need to go to the Immigration Department for the 90 day Non Immigrant ‘B’ Visa to be stamped in your Passport. Within the last 30 days of the 90 day Visa expiring the Employee will then apply for the Visa to be extended for 1 year. Second Step: Work Permit The same as Second Step of Applying Outside Thailand Documentation Required The documentation required from the Applicant when applying for a Work Permit is as follows: 1 Copy of Education Certificates

Starting the final round tied for the lead with France’s Lionel Weber, Janewattananond closed with a level-par 72, forcing a sudden-death playoff which he won with a birdie on the first extra hole, becoming the first Thai player to win a MENA Tour event. A good four shots off the pace overnight, Rattanaphaibulkij produced a bogey-free 68, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, third, but his scintillating final-round charge fell agonisingly short

2 46 How to Continue the Legacy of Lizzy’s Multi-Culti Club? On Saturday January 28th Lizzy Ginsel, the ‘Grande Dame’ of Hua Hin, hosted her iconic Multi-Culti Club (MCC) monthly dinner. After 4 years of masterminding these events, it was sadly announced this was her finale. Lizzy is certainly multicultural. She was born and raised in Jayapura, the provincial capital of Papua Indonesia while it was an overseas territory of the Netherlands. Transition from colonial rule towards integration with Indonesia was a troubled time which meant that many fled to other countries with Lizzy travelling to the Netherlands and then to Zurich in Switzerland. Dutch, German and Swiss influences and languages are a big part of her background but also a desire to embrace other cultures, most recently during her past ten years in Thailand.
Lizzy is stepping back from the limelight What had begun as Swiss or German evenings back in 2009 evolved over the years into a celebration of an international community which is part of the character of Hua Hin. These events reject a tendency for national groups to isolate themselves from the broader community. Lizzy knows that isolated ex-pats are lonely ex-pats. The philosophy that Lizzy expands is that to successfully live here as an ex-pat means embracing diversity by mingling and socialising with all nationalities and very importantly Thai people. MCC events were always attended by a smorgasbord of nationalities with many influential Thai community members each month.

Apart from providing an occasion for all nationalities to gather together, raising money for charity was a big part of the MCC scene. Collaboration with Andrew Stocks, the founder of the Power of Love Church, lead to a focus on funding to build the Church Children’s Home, a mission accomplished. Andrew says that Lizzy was one of the kindest people that he has known and he knows many. “Lizzy, you did a wonderful job, we love you, and we will never forget you. There will never be another Queen of people’s hearts like you in Hua Hin”.

She is no longer as steady on her feet; or multi-coloured toenails and won’t be quite as ‘bizzy’ or as ‘dizzy’ anymore! It’s unlikely that the flamboyant, exuberant and somewhat outrageous personality will really disappear or that her colorful persona won’t be seen around town. But there is also a sense that a personal mission has been accomplished.

Eurovision Song Contest Ukraine 2017
The 2017 Eurovision Song Contest took place in Ukraine’s capital city, Kiev, which previously hosted the competition in 2005. The International Exhibition Centre, the venue for the contest, was filled to a capacity 11,000 spectators. Portugal’s Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Song Contest, the wildly popular annual competition that pits singers from nations in the European Broadcasting Union. The winning song, “Amar Pelos Dois” (“For The Both Of Us”) was written by Sobral’s sister, Luisa. Salvador Sobral from Portugal performs the song “Amar pelos dois” with his sister Luisa after winning. Sobral’s win delighted fans gathered in the Ukrainian capital for the grand final, in which 26 acts took to the stage in a riot of costume and glitter. The Sobrals’ ballad gave Portugal its first win in the 61-year-old contest.
The Portuguese singer won both the most points awarded by judges from each country in the contest and from residents of the nations taking part. The right to host the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest came after Jamala won the 2016 edition in Stockholm with her song ‘1944’. The 42 countries competing included Romania and Portugal who returned to the competition after a year’s absence. 11 55 ‘Tambun Baan’ – Blessing Your Home ‘Tambun’, the act of giving and merit making is an integral part of Thai Buddhist culture and one of its most widely observed aspects is at home in the ceremony known as tambun baan, at which a group of monks visit your house to bestow a blessing.

Extras were available to ‘borrow’, such as a mobile shrine and receptacles for the all-important food and cooking preparation. After invitations were given to neighbours, family and close friends, lots of shopping done and the scene was set. The ceremony, led by the chief monk or ajaarn, started mid-morning, so that everything was finished and more importantly, the monks fed, before midday, their religious cut-off time for food.
Five monks from the local Wat ensuring the Tambun Baan is a success This practice is not restricted to the important parts of building or moving into a home, but anytime it seems like there is a need to ensure that the home is ‘in sync’ with the elements. In this case there were two motivations. Firstly, the main householder was having a birthday which in itself could have led to ‘tambun wan gert’, but also there had been a string of small problems in the house. Just annoying issues such a water leak, the water pump was playing up and then the air-con was malfunctioning. Each of these problems was simply fixed, but when the TV screen started to show bright spots on the screen it was clearly time for action! This meant that a house blessing was required, so arranging Tambun Baan was the way to go. A visit to the local temple or ‘Wat’ to check that the date was in order and a deal was struck to invite some monks
Earlier, one member of the family set off to fetch the monks while the guests were arriving with lots of chatting, joking and catching up on gossip. On the monks’ arrival in their distinctive orange robes, a hush descended on the gathering and in a blink of an eye, the ceremony, with its wonderfully soothing low-level chanting, began. No idea how they each monk remembers all the words
between fingers and then handing on the ball to the next monk and then the next, until a holy circle is formed. With the chanting giving the thread and anyone within its circle a sacred quality, a blessing and protection was provided to prevent all things bad. At the end, one of the monks then moved around the congregation sprinkling holy water on the heads of all present. Even the children stopped playing at this point and knelt obediently to get a light dousing.

Those things over, the serious stuff started with a feast laid out at the monks’ feet. This had been prepared over the previous days with some of the guests donating to the feast to produce meat, fish and vegetable dishes, alongside delicious desserts (khanom). The monks, once sated, didn’t hang around but were delivered back to the wat (temple), with the guests then able to tuck in, helping themselves to two or three servings.
Plentiful ‘leftovers’ but no booze for the guests This was a no alcohol affair and in a charming manner reminiscent of children’s parties, left-over desserts are quickly packed in little bags for taking home and after just a few hours, with blessings given, evil warded off, good deeds done, everyone fed and watered and on their way home, the tambun baan was over.

Happily, this ceremony is a very common part of life, so no need to wait long till the next one. We expect that the household will no longer suffer from any more annoying defects. This was a much more enjoyable occasion and cost-effective than a visit from the home maintenance man (they hope)!

Robinson Lifestyle is a new model shopping mall which local shoppers have really embraced. Our visit on Saturday after the official Friday opening was nearly too hard! After a circuit of the huge building and failing to find a parking space we were ready to give up. Just then a nice new Mercedes pulled out from the perfect spot directly in front of us and we were in the right place at the right time.
