From the Editor Thanks to a reader’s tip-off, last month I was able to meet yet another visiting celebrity to Hua Hin, French artist Claude Valery. With the cooperation of Khun Nang from Baan Sillipin, a meeting was arranged between Claude and Malaysian artist Jansen Chow at the opening of his solo exhibition at the Hua Hin Artist’s Village. Our cover page photo shows that great meeting of these artistic minds.

Another VIP guest at the opening was Mrs. Orasa Awutkhom the local Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. We agreed that the burgeoning art scene is becoming another important focus for visitors to our growing region. However the less glamorous side of growth is the need for infrastructure to keep pace. The good news is that the Municipality has been keeping an ‘eye on the ball’ and taking steps to manage that need. Water supplies, traffic management and even the least glamorous of all; garbage disposal are all in the sights of the Mayor to ensure Hua Hin continues to provide these practical necessities. We have continued to follow the Pattaya – Hua Hin ferry story, although this remains a source of some frustration. The ferry service seems reluctant to provide essential information to the public, especially online. Hua Hin Today endeavours to keep locals and visitors informed, however we rely on others to communicate, including the ferry operators. If there is an event, news item or just someone with a story to tell, please follow the lead of our reader Alun and send me an email.

A sample of ‘Valerism’, Claude’s unique art style But the burning question; what is Claude Valery doing in Hua Hin? It’s fair to say that Claude’s past priorities have not really had an Asian focus. However his wife Christele commented that she has a different perspective and convinced him to join her in a trip to Thailand. Christele has long held a passion for travelling to the Asian region.
Claude Valery is a renowned French painter, artists, sculptor, choreographer, variety entertainer, author and the master of many other artistic pursuits. Most recently he has ventured into the world of fashion design but also venturing to Hua Hin which has been his temporary home away from home for the past few months. Hua Hin Today had the privilege of spending time with Claude and his very elegant wife Christele recently, what a privilege!
But first some insights from Charles Aznavour France’s popular and enduring singers. Aznavour is an international pop deity and a lifelong friend of Claude Valery. He provided a preface to the ‘Librio Mongraphico’ (Claude Valery’s published biography). A conversation with Claude inevitably reveals his connections with many amazing names amongst his favourite people. For example; Liza Minnelli, the Fellini family and other significant figures globally from the arts and aristocracy.
This became a few months in Hua Hin to just relax, recharge the batteries and re-stimulate the creative juices. Since arriving in Hua Hin the couple has spent time exploring the artistic scene downtown and was aware that the Hua Hin Artist’s Village (Baan Sillipin) was a must-see art experience. We were able to extend Khun Nang’s invitation to Hua Hin Today to Claude and Christele as Baan Sillipin VIP guests. This was to attend an important exhibition featuring the work of Malaysian artist Jansen Chow. About Jansen Chow Born in Kuantan, the state capital of Pahang Malaysia, Jansen Chow has been awarded memberships with renowned watercolour associations in the USA and Canada and has exhibited widely in both Malaysia and the international stage. The artist is famous for his signature techniques which include using stardust highlights, sequin effects and silver gelatin grains in many of his free-frame stills. A Coming Together of Artistic Talent

“He’s really a curious fellow this Claude Valery. He’s annoyed me ever since I’ve known him. He’s always annoyed me; he succeeds at whatever he touches. I swear it’s damned annoying. And it didn’t just begin yesterday. He had already succeeded at a number of things with the same joy. But never, no never, did he tell me that he was painting and then one day whamo, I got his shapes and colours right in the face. I would like to have said to him just once; well no, this time no, but I could hardly ignore the truth. I loved what I saw and I still do love his work. You ask why? That is difficult; it’s not because he is my friend no, no. It touches me, it simply touches me. His paintings make me dream, I get inside them like I get inside myself, I swim through them, I cross over them, I travel inside them. They end up by becoming part of my daily life. I love them, what more can I say, I love them.

Baan Sillipin Hua Hin provided the ideal venue for both the exhibition by Jansen Chow, but also for his meeting with fellow artist Claude Valery. This was a classic meeting of east meets west. A coming together of two likeminded artists with a passion for their craft who recognised and admired each other’s talent and abilities. One ability they share is the creation of art works from internal inspirations; an ability to transfer ideas of the mind to the canvas. Our thanks to Khun Nang and Khun Thawee from Baan Sillapin for their invitation to join the exhibition; but also to Alun and Ingrid for their introduction to their Hua Hin neighbour Claude Valery. Fashion Note: You may soon see the Claude Valery label at your favourite fashion outlet. If you spot these initials you will know that the item originates from a maestro in the world of art.

6 Just One of Khun Air’s Special Places It’s the Air Space Restaurant!
The founder of Khao Takiab’s Air Space Restaurant is a young entrepreneur. Khun Air has travelled the world in her quest to understand how the ‘best of the best’ offer their culinary delights and it shows. We were also honoured to meet Khun Air’s very gracious mother during her weekend visit. Visits to Hua Hin by the Bangkok based family have long been a tradition. Their affection and familiarity for our town is the main reason for choosing this location for Khun Air’s venture. The restaurant scene is not a part of the family background and Khun Air describes how she chose to become a Starbuck’s barista to show her family where her passion and future lay. That being accepted, her mother became the main influence and inspiration for the Air Space concept and unique presentation best symbolised by the ‘Wright Flyer’ suspended from one of the dining area interiors. Our unplanned lunch with ‘Khun Air’, or to use her full name Kornsiri Sooppakitkul, meant experiencing just a taste of what she has learnt during her travels. She regards New York and particularly the district of Manhattan as the most diverse and dynamic place to learn about international restaurant culture. After all, just one website lists 11,570 establishments in New York.
The Air Space take on A New York hot dog The humble hotdog was our very modest taste of New York. One expert says there may be as many as 5,000 pushcarts in Manhattan, most of them selling hot dogs. The New York hotdog specialty is a frank (sausage) wrapped with a snappy natural casing, cooked on a flatiron griddle, dressed with spicy brown mustard, sauerkraut, and griddled onions. I can’t comment from experience how the Air Space version compares but who cares; it was the best hot dog I’ve ever devoured! Apart from two years spent exploring New York, Khun Air’s travels have included around seven years in Vancouver but also travels to North and South American countries, Europe, Australia and even Cuba. Just last month she was in London for a few weeks and next in her sights is the Easter Islands.
Khun Air exploring the Arizona scenery
HUA HIN TODAY, March 2017
Perhaps that’s to consider the ‘stone heads’ of the islands compared to Hua Hin’s stone head; but maybe a new take on Easter eggs for April?
For Khun Air the journey is far from over. Also in her sights is the possibility of a PhD in hospitality. She’s contemplating a doctoral thesis which combines her interests in diverse cultures, cuisines, travels and hospitality. Any suggestions for the title are welcome. The founder of Air Space is probably one of youngest but also the most considered, travelled and entrepreneurial restaurateurs in Hua Hin. The result is a dining experience that is a class above most. Getting to know Khun Air is a very pleasant experience but be warned; our ‘brief’ visit stretched to a 2 hour expansive conversation in just the blink of an eye! To contact Khun Air or Air Space Phone: 063 916 0999 Email: team@airspacehuahin.com Website: http://www.airspacehuahin.com Footnote: Air Space is on the corner of the short entry road to the Pattaya ferry port. The Beaconhouse Yamsaard School Hua Hin is ‘Seeking the Light’
It seems like a strange thing to say, but our first impression was to notice the absence of that ‘school smell’. You know that reminder of your own school days; a combination of perspiration, dirty laundry and disinfectant with a hint of freshly sharpened pencils. It is a smell like no other, but not at Beaconhouse Yamsaard School (BYS). We asked International Principal Matthew Allen why this was so. He immediately understood what we meant by a ‘school smell’ and said a team of cleaners were constantly on the job, deodorising and replacing that unfortunate smell with something far more pleasant. His own take on school life is the slogan – “where friendships begin and long memories are made”; but no bad memories of that school smell here!
International Principal Matthew and some happy school children Apart from being student friendly with lots of smiling faces in the schoolyard, another feature of the BYS is being parent-friendly. Principal Matthew wants to welcome parents and always be on hand. He’s an Australian native from the Gold Coast of Queensland who has been in Thailand for some 16 years. He’s been at the BYS for eight of those years and principal for the last two years. As well the International Principal, there is also a Thai Principal, Ms Pilaporn Chamchoy. That’s typical of how the BYS operates, including duality in teaching staff with one Thai and one foreign teacher to each class.
That means Matthew has seen the school grow and prosper. The next step is to open year 11 in May of this Year and then to Year 12 in May 2018. He’s also very proud of the results of achievements in competitive environments, both in an academic and sporting context.

8 Wall Painting: Artistic Homage to King Bhumibol Beautiful paintings that depict His Majesty the King Bhumibol along the wall on Wong Prachan Road have recently become an eye-catching feature for the passersby. All the paintings were made from the heart by Hua Hin artists.
This art project was inspired by a volunteer group with cooperation of the Hua Hin Municipality. According to Mr. Akharadet Rawangwong and Mr. Thanakri Phramaneenil, members of the volunteer group, the project started when Mr. Akharadet had an idea about expressing gratitude to His Majesty and illustrating the King’s royal projects throughout his reign. Out of 4,447 royal projects, Mr. Akharadet selected 58 to be transformed into the wall paintings of this project.
HUA HIN TODAY, March 2017
The paintings were made by over 100 artists and local people from Silpakorn University in Bangkok and Phetchaburi, Ratanakosin Rajamangala University of Technology and Hua Hin Artist Village. The volunteer group took responsibility for the this project, which has received overwhelmingly good feedback and response. Besides enabling people to see the achievements of the late King, the art project symbolises the unity and solidarity of Thai people in working together and giving one another support.
The painters did not receive payment for their work, but were proud and happy to dedicate themselves for their beloved monarch. Mr. Akharadet asked those who admire the paintings to understand that the painters created their work because they would like to do give to the community, not to show themselves off. The project also transforms the featureless wall into a place of beautiful art.

Thai beats Englishman in National Crossword Puzzle Championship
A young Thai man has tasted victory at the National Crossword Puzzle Championships at The Mall in Bangkapi, Bangkok. Defending champion Tawan Sunathvanichkul won the two-day contest and took home the 25,000 THB prize. English Bangkok resident Gerry Carter, 55, was his main opponent up until the final round. The puzzle fest featured more than just English language crossword puzzles though. It also offered competitions in completing Thai crosswords, Scrabble in both English and Thai, Sudoku number puzzles and more. Of the 2,000 people that came to watch and play, there were many young students who enjoyed trying out the games on both small boards and a life-size board set up at The Mall, reported ThaiVisa. Word games, especially Scrabble and crosswords, have legions of fiercely competitive fans and players in Thailand. In July, the country hosts King’s Cup, an annual competition where the highestranking global Scrabble players come to Bangkok to compete at their beloved word game.

10 December 5th is now a Day of National Importance The cabinet has acknowledged the prime minister’s endorsement of a Royal Command designating December 5th as a Day of National Importance in remembrance of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej
At Government House, Assistant Government Spokesman Col Athisit Chainuwat revealed that the Cabinet has acknowledged the Prime Minister’s designation of the 5th of December as the birthday anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the National Day and the National Father’s Day in accordance with the royal mandate. In memory of the beloved King, the Cabinet also resolved to continue to observe December 5th as a public holiday.
Hospitals Must Treat Emergencies Without Cost
Hospitals that charge emergency patients will face legal action under the new sanatorium law, according to the Health Service Support Department (HSSD). Boonruang Triruangworawat, directorgeneral of the HSSD, has commented that the 2016 Sanatorium Act stipulates that hospitals must waive medical fees for patients who are admitted to the emergency unit. The law is aimed at standardising the quality of state and private hospitals for better patient care. The Act was published in the Royal Gazette on December 20th last year and has been in effect since December 21st. Under the Act, hospitals are also required to disclose the names of their medical staff, medical and drug fees and other expenses associated with non-emergency cases, and they must charge patients in accordance with the rates they announce. Hospital managers who charge their patients more than the stipulated rates will
face a maximum jail term of one year and/or a fine of up to 20,000 THB. Bureau of Sanatorium and Arts of Healing director Arkhom Praditsuwan said that along with the medical fees, the new law would help regulate exaggerated advertisements by sanatoriums. All hospitals in Bangkok are required to get permission from the HSSD before they can release public advertisements, while sanatoriums in other provinces must receive approval from provincial health offices for their advertisements. Under the Act, hospitals that are found guilty of exaggerations in their advertisements would face a harsher penalty than in previous years. The penalty has been increased from only a fine to a one-year jail term, a maximum fine of 20,000 THB or both.
Offenders will also face a 10,000 THB fine every day until they cease the advertising. Those who launch ads without
permission will also face a 20,000 THB fine, along with a fine of 10,000 THB a day until they stop advertising. – Bangkok Post
U Beauty! - The Latest Beer in Thailand Visitors to Thailand may choose to drink Thai brand beers. Favourites include Singha, Leo and of course Chang Beer. Now there is another choice, it’s called U Beer. U Beer is a new lager beer from Singha Corporation, the original Thai brewery since 1933, is the latest addition to Thailand’s domestic beer market. The beer is said to be inspired by the German beer and marketed to cater to the young generation who are said to be more designed conscious, hipster, fun and lifestyle savvy. To quote the promoters: “If you look at the design of U Beer, it is fun and modern.” Amateur reviewer have had their say and seem to be giving U Beer the thumbs up; or is that ‘bottoms up’? Here’s a sample of what’s being said: “If you don’t put any ice in, you will notice a subtle flavour.” (Editor’s note: ice in beer; never!)
“May become my beer of choice, will be out this weekend looking for the U girls”. “Today I have heard both that it is a Bavarian inspired beer, and that it tastes similar to Singha Light. I’m hoping for something better than camel %@##, but not holding my breath.” “Dreadful name, but I’ll enjoy asking the girls for “a bottle of U”.” “The rep I spoke to last night said taste - same same all other beer - his exact words”. 11 ‘Battle at the Beach’; for the Benefit of VIP’s
VIPs (very important persons) at last month’s big Cha-Am Muay Thai event, the ‘Battle at the Beach’, included officials from the Police, Provincial Government, the Mayor of Cha-Am as well as World Champion Muay Thai fighter Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee. However the real VIPs were the handicapped children on stage representing their school; the beneficiary of this Charity Event.
Cha-Am is eagerly awaiting the next “Battle at the Beach”
Knowing that they were ‘fighting for a cause’ was a big incentive which produced stirring performances by all eighteen fighters, a much greater motivation than personal pride, trophies or any other incentive. After early bouts between Thai boxers representing gyms in Hua Hin, Pattaya and Chumphon, foreign fighters from Italy, Denmark, Malaysia, England and Holland made their way to the square ring. It was evident that Thai and world champion Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee was in the corner of those who had travelled from Pattaya. Probably the best advice available anywhere resulted in all his protégés winning their bouts including the ‘Italian Stallion’ Fabrizio. The good-natured crowd had some doubts about at least one of these decisions, but judges are always right and who would want to provoke the ire of the champ?
The Cha-Am Mayor opening proceedings
The world champion in a winner’s corner
Dutchman Rick de Bies attracted a big crowd of orangeshirted supporters displaying his trademark brick ‘logo’. The fan club was not disappointed with a second round TKO performance; let’s just hope their dress sense improves! We were assured by the referee that Rick didn’t have half a brick in each boxing glove despite that suggestion (not by his bruised and battered Malaysian opponent) to explain Rick’s delay in entering the ring. This was a full night of excitement at the Cha-Am viewpoint, a unique venue for Muay Thai on a balmy evening by the ocean. Rosalie and Sakrungroj (Khun Port) from Chok Dee Gym in Cha-Am hosted an event that really whetted the appetites of the 700 or so spectators.

World Qualifying Line Dancing Competition in Hua Hin
Basking in the glory of victory
Bikinis On The Run
The 2017 Singha Bikini Beach Run will take place again this year on Sunday March 19th starting at 05:00 AM.
The Tamarind Ballroom at Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort is hosting Asia’s largest Line Dance Country competition, the Thailand Open from 10th to 12th March.
A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancing is practiced and learned in country and western dance bars, social clubs, dance clubs and ballrooms. The World Country Dance Federation was formed in Europe with the mission to further the art form and sport of country dance at all levels (social, competitive, and professional) through a variety of styles and music. The WCDF sanctions high level competition events in countries such as Germany, UK, The Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Denmark, Ireland, France, and Sweden.
There are 3 WCDF sanctioned competitions in Asia, two in Korea and now one in Hua Hin Thailand as a World’s qualification competition. More than 80 dancers are registered from all over Asia and Europe. The public is welcomed to be a part of the event on Saturday 11th March from 11 AM until 7 PM and Sunday 12th March from 10 AM until 11 PM.
For more information see www.thaiopenwcdf.com A conversation from the comedy movie ‘The Blues Brothers’ between blues band Member Elwood and country bar owner Claire: Elwood “What kind of music do you have here?” Claire “Oh, we got both kinds. We got country and western.”
Bikinis aren’t compulsory, especially for men and you’ll need to be up early to check out the scene. This is an annual event on the Cha-Am beach. Runners will include those who are highly experienced and well trained and those who rarely break into a gallop. At the top level this will be an international field including runners from African countries (Kenya seems to dominate), Japan, Australia as well as Scandinavian nations. Events of this nature have really taken off across Thailand in recent years and receive appropriate support from tourism authorities and government at all levels. Everyone is encouraged to get fit, with jogging for fun and good health an increasingly common choice of exercise. If you are ready to take that pastime to the next level, the Bikini Beach Run may be the way to go. Check out the website for all the details and registration. Or if you just want to be a ‘bikini spectator’ you’ll need to be at the beach in front of the Long Beach Hotel at 5 AM on the day. www.jogandjoy.com email: info@JogandJoy.com Tel.02-721-6009, 086-391-4834, 081-867-5262

12 The New Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism in Thailand is Appointed Somdet Phra Maha Muniwong, formerly the abbot of Ratchbhopit Temple, has officially become the 20th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.
The position was left vacant after the passing away on October 24th of the late Supreme Patriarch, His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, at the age of 100.
“The new Supreme Patriarch is very healthy although he is now 90 years old, partly because he has good heart and does not want objects,” Omsin said (The Nation).
The PM’s Office Minister Omsin Chivapruek who oversees the National Office of Buddhism, made the invitation during am earlier visit to the abbot to his temple. The event was described as being simple and was implemented according to tradition. The new Supreme Patriarch performed Sangha activities at Rachbhopit Temple’s Ubosot on February 13th and 15th.
To honour the new chief of Thailand’s Buddhism, an investiture ceremony has taken place at the Emerald Buddha Temple. At the start of the ceremony, the King presented saffron robes to senior monks from the Sangha Supreme Council (SSC). He then lit candles and incense sticks to recognise the Tripitaka (the earliest collection of Buddhist teachings).
Senior monks in the Racha Khana rank then chanted and granted religious precepts to the king. The King presented the golden plate and other items associated with this important rank to the Supreme Patriarch. At other temples in Thailand, monks rang their bells to mark the appointment of the new Supreme Patriarch.
True Arena Hua Hin Hosts a Women’s Fight to Launch Plans For a Muay Thai Centre
His Excellency Suwat Liptapanlop, former Deputy Prime Minister, presided in the opening ceremony of Women’s Fight Muay Thai world championship at True Arena Hua Hin. The championship was held to support and promote Women’s Muay Thai fighters who have increasingly developed boxing skills and gained worldwide recognition. True Arena Hua Hin transformed the centre court of the main tennis stadium, into a high standard boxing stadium. The highlight match of the night was Ticha Rongraenkeela Korat, 57 kg World Muay Thai Council WMC Champion from Thailand defending her title against Lisa Wor Santai from England. The Thai fighter aka “Wai Jadjan” scored with her left kicks and left punches then increased the pressure in the last 3 rounds to successfully defend her title after completing 5 rounds. Suwat Liptapanlop said that he is glad to be part of Thailand Women’s boxing
development. Not only skilled male fighters could bring fame to Thailand but also the female fighters who have a flair for Muay Thai as much as the males. Again True Arena Hua Hin demonstrated that it is a world standard sporting complex. There are now plans to launch a Muay Thai Development Centre to follow the pathway of a National Muay Thai Institute. The future True Arena Hua Hin will surely be part of Thailand Women’s boxing development.
First Restaurant Allegedly The Tipco Foods Company Donates To Dog Care Encroaching On Public Land Dismantled
One seafood restaurant allegedly encroaching on Hua Hin beach has been voluntarily dismantled, after more than 40 buildings, including several restaurants, were served eviction notice from Hua Hin municipal administration on encroachment charges. Saeng Thai Seafood restaurant was the first amongst several restaurants located on Naresdamri Road that agreed to move out and to dismantle the buildings. Others have refused to move out and vowed to fight on against the eviction. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul said the municipal administration invoked Sections 40 and 42 of the Building Act to order some 40 buildings allegedly encroaching on public land to be evicted and dismantled within 45 days from December 20th when the eviction order was served. Those who refused to move out have petitioned against the municipality eviction order and have appealed to the Prachuab Khiri Khan Provincial Governor.
The mayor stated that if the provincial authorities agreed with the municipality decision, the restaurant proprietors can still resort to the Administrative Court for help. If that was not successful, the buildings will have to be demolished, he added.
Besides the restaurants along Naresdamri Road, the Hua Hin district office has lodged complaints with the police against six hotels for allegedly encroaching on public land. – englishnews.thaipbs.or.th

13 ‘Garbage Island’ off Hua Hin Will Take Time to Clear
The huge floating garbage island in the Gulf of Thailand is largely plastic waste and a threat to marine life, according to authorities who say it will take 10 days to clear
Managing the Infrastructure Needs of Hua Hin Members of the National Legislature Council of Thailand and Thailand Senate have visited Hua Hin to meet with the Mayor, Hua Hin municipal executives and staff. The main purpose of the visit was to engage in discussions and solutions for the infrastructure needs of the city.
According to the Hua Hin Mayor, Hua Hin is currently facing three main problems. The first problem concerns the increasing number of garbage in the city. Garbage has been dumped near the Thanarat Military Camp; however an effective plan to deal with this problem has to be implemented.
For more information contact the Hua Hin Municipality Office by calling 0-3251-1047 extensions 301, 302, and 303 during office hours.
Water Supply Improvements
Traffic congestion in central Hua Hin is also a problem that needs to be solved immediately. Particularly during weekends and public holidays when traffic jams are frequent. Traffic police and local authorities must work together to find an effective way to tackle the problem. The trash slick was located again by an aerial survey 10th February, 10 kilometres away from its previous position. It was then drifting between Koh Talu in Bang Saphan Noi district and a headland of Ao Mae Ramphueng in Bang Saphan district. Koh Talu is a popular shallow-water dive site in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Authorities estimate the floating junk, which was first spotted a week earlier off Chumphon has been drifting northward and weighs 100 tons. Winds have already scattered some of the trash and made collection a more difficult task, said Sopon Thongdee, deputy directorgeneral of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. Officials expect to be working in the area
using speedboats and small fishing nets to collect the garbage, he said. He said he hoped winds and waves would gather the garbage into a single mass to facilitate the operation. The majority of the garbage consisted of plastic and was harmful to coral and marine life, especially turtles and dolphinst, Sopon said. When plastic garbage sinks, it could cover and kill coral, he added. “It is necessary to remove the garbage from the sea as soon as possible.” He said the trash might have been debris trapped in water draining off the land after the recent heavy floods, especially from Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. He said he believed it was the biggest floating garbage patch ever seen in Thai waters. – Bangkok Post
Meet the Our New Sales Manager – She’s “Mint”!
Here’s just one dictionary definition of Mint – “very good, excellent; cool”; awesome”. Hua Hin Today’s new Sales Manager is Jiratha Kerdparn, better known as Khun Mint. As the definition suggests, she’s the sort of person that guarantees her clients a level of service that’s second to none.
home; unless the singer goes ‘public’, a successful career will never happen. Although Khun Mint is a native of Nakhon Panom, Hua Hin has been her family’s home base for the past 10 years. She’s a graduate in hospitality and tourism from Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University and has a resume that includes sales, event and financial management. A Hua Hin resort staff canteen was where she met husband Khun Ton and a real case of love at first sight. The couple now has an eighteen months old daughter with husband ‘Ton’ operating ‘Ton’s Steak Hua Hin’ within the Soi Bintabaht beer garden. However he’s looking for a business name change as the restaurant offers a much wider range of menu items than steak; she’s helping him work on that!
Khun Mint joined the Hua Hin Today team in January this year. She is now getting to know our important friends and offering them her insights into advertising strategies that work for their business. But first and foremost she’s a listener and also a fluent English (and Thai) language communicator. Khun Mint believes that it’s all about introductions, both at a personal level but also about introducing businesses to the widest exposure possible. It’s like a great singer who only sings in the shower at
Khun Mint is an active Member of the Hua Hin Women’s Club and when she gets the time away from business and family responsibilities she’s an avid reader (real books; not digital) and tries to relax before a good night’s sleep with some meditation to make sure her mind is free from the stresses of the day. Hua Hin Today continues to offer very professional advertising services with Khun Mint on board. Give her a call if you realise that your marketing plans could use a fresh approach. Water supply issues were also acknowledged of the dependence on Pranburi Dam and Phetchaburi Dam. With the increasing future needs for water, steps have been taken to resolve water production and supply issues. The Hua Hin Mayor raised other equally important ways to improve Hua Hin. The visiting authorities said that they would present a report about the matters raised to the National Legislature Council of Thailand shortly.
Plans To Accelerate Improvements to the Canal Road and Railway Intersections
The Hua Hin Municipality wants to develop the canal road and develop improvements to vehicle access in nearby intersections as an important priority to reduce traffic congestion and safety. Cooperation by the Irrigation Department and State Railways of Thailand is vital to these improvements. Development of the canal road includes the western side of the canal with an allconcrete surface and with completed storm water drainage planned. Sections of this western side are currently unsealed and a dusty surface resulting in inconvenience for both users and local residents. Further work to this road requires the permission of the Irrigation Department. The canal road begins at Wong Prachan in the Bor Fai area and known as Kan Klong. It is an important bypass for traffic to move to and from the downtown area. Improvements to the canal road began in November 2016 and the work is due to be completed in September this year. Additionally there are plans to improve intersections and railway crossings in the Bon Kai area where vehicles travelling along Soi 88 encounter major traffic congestion. The railway crossing is a bottleneck for traffic especially during holidays and other busy periods. The Hua Hin Municipality has requested authorisation from the State Railways of Thailand to expand the width of the road and to install additional boom-gates to improve safety and traffic flow. The Municipality is also accelerating plans for the construction of a railway bridge at the Bon Kai intersection.
Mr. Montree Chuphu, the deputy mayor of Hua Hin, said that the Pranburi Dam had more water now than in the past three years, and Hua Hin principally depended on the water from this dam. In Hua Hin alone, there are 5 reservoirs where water is cleaned, filtered and chlorinated according to the international standard. About 67,000 cubic metres of tap water can be produced daily which is sufficient for about 300,000 people. However with more people visiting the city this may not always be sufficient, resulting in some areas experiencing sediment in their water. People in Hua Hin have been complaining about turbid water and inaccessibility of water resources in some areas. Mrs. Kamrai Phibulthai, 60, a seller of street food in Bor Fai, said that she needed water to cook but the water was turbid. Living in Soi Hua Na, Ms. Kingfah said that it had been almost 8 years that her family had to buy water for consumption at home. It costs her around a thousand THB every two or three months. The Hua Hin Municipality is currently building a new water pumping station in the area known as Bo Kham. The station will be able can pump 500 cubic metres per hour from the 1-Sai Yai or Sai Mai canal. The pumped water will be sent through a pipeline for treatment and use as tap water for the city. This Department of Irrigation project will allow the municipality to store water because of the supply from the canals in question is very reliable. The Hua Hin Municipal Office started these construction projects in December 2016 with completion due in August this year. The station will be able to at least 12,000 cubic metres daily to make water supplies more secure. Additionally some water pipes in Hua Hin are as old as 50 years without a sufficient budget to renew these pipes. The deputy mayor of Hua Hin added that new water pipes were being installed in Khao Takiab areas and in Chong Khao Dang. The Provincial Waterworks Authority is helping the municipal office to reduce expenses and to effectively solve water problems in a sustainable way. However local people see an increase in their water accounts.. For more information contact the Hua Hin Municipal Office, Water Works Division Phone: 032 511 667 during office hours.

The 2009 graduate from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) majoring in Business & Hospitality Industry Management, Alexander Eaton also worked at independent restaurants in San Francisco. Alexander Eaton was appointed General Manager of the 4-star Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa in August 2016. The hotel is a top family resort, and meeting & convention venue in Hua Hin. The hotel was inducted into the TripAdvisor’s ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2015 for being the fifth consecutive recipient of its ‘Certificate of Excellence’. In 2016, it won TripAdvisor’s prestigious “Top Hotels for Families” in Thailand in the Traveller’s Choice Hotel category. “We’re looking forward to welcoming Alexander Eaton to our Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa and benefiting from his proven experience in delivering results at our Phuket property, particularly in Food and Beverage” said Peter Lucas, President of Destination Properties. “My mission is to make this hotel Hua Hin’s top Themed Meetings and Events venue, through delivering personalised customer
Mr. Eaton started at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. in the US before transferring to the 5-star Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa in Queensland, Australia where he was Hotel Operations Manager and was instrumental to the hotel being ranked the top three in four categories among 14 Starwood Hotels and Resorts in the Pacific Region. Mr Pichit Akrathit, Deputy Ministry of Transportation and Communications has presided over the opening ceremony for the ferry across the Gulf of Thailand from Pattaya to Hua Hin. The ceremony officially launched the ferry service at both locations with Harbour Department, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Royal Passenger Liner Company and various government officers in attendance. More Sea Routes to Link Pattaya and Hua Hin to Other Ports Urged Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has urged the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to explore new sea routes that will serve as options for tourists to travel to tourist destinations. Ferry Service Frustrations The absence of online bookings through a ferry service website with a secure credit card facility remains a glaring discouragement to travellers. The absence of ticket sales from travel agents means
that bookings may only be made at the offices located at the Pattaya and Hua Hin (Khao Takiab) piers. Our last visit to the pier was on 17th February. We were told that in March the basic one way ticket price will revert back to 1,250 THB as the February price of 999 THB was a promotional offer for that month. The departure time from Pattaya remains as 10.30 AM and then from Hua Hin at 1.30 PM. And the website? …………………… next month! It’s difficult to fathom why this longawaited service remains unwilling or unable to communicate with potential passengers, local authorities and the media. Marketing of the service is virtually non-existent. Hua Hin Today remains committed to ‘spreading the news’, but the lack of cooperation by the operators is perplexing to say the least. The Development of Emotion
Human beings are social animals. In our life, we encounter so many events and stories that are both happy and unhappy. It’s all mixed together to spice up our life so that we are never be bored. We have to handle so many different emotions in one day, either from ourselves or arising from sharing emotion with others. But have you ever wondered what actually caused those emotions and where it came from?
An emotion is like a cluster of energy that is unstable and changes over time. It depends on the character and the feelings inside everyone’s mind. It affects and causes physical changes to our body, which is manifested in various forms of behaviour. For example, when we face certain situations that make us scared, the emotion will stimulate the brain to secrete a neurotransmitter called Adrenaline. Adrenaline has a stimulating effect on the nervous system causing our body to feel alert and results in an increasing speed of the heartbeat, more sweating, and anxiety. However, when our body adapts to the situation, the emotion of fear may be replaced by another emotion such as anger with aggressive behaviour.
Nevertheless, we can divide such emotional stimulus into 2 main categories as follows: 1. External stimulus that we face in everyday life may lead to satisfaction or dissatisfaction followed by certain emotions. 2. Internal stimulus: such as physical condition, hormone levels and neurotransmitters may lead to emotional changes. For example, women during menstruation could have unstable level of hormones causing them to have diverse and unstable emotions. Emotional experience, maturity, and the characteristics of each and every person lead to individual and different expressions. This is why we get excited and feel more eager when we see or do something for the first time and when we were young. After doing or seeing the same thing repeatedly, excitement and eagerness will usually fade away to impassive emotion or boredom. The different experiences of life also cause people to express their emotion and behave differently. To understand the causes of emotions is not as important as to learn how to handle different emotions. Impulsive actions could affect so many others, in both a negative and positive way. If you think Old Stuff Day is about commemorating the old stuffs you own, sorry to break it to you guys but you are dead wrong. It is to telling that life is so much more than drinking same old crappy coffee, life is mundane if you stick to same old lifestyle, to take control of your life, to have faith and to sail away wherever wind takes you, and that you would be surprised to find out that all along Rome wasn’t that far.
7th March Middle Name Pride Day
While some superstition has it that opening umbrella indoors will bring bad luck, but opening an Umbrella Indoors Day provides you an opportunity to see it for yourself, is it merely a coincidental superstition? Or it indeed brings a bad luck in real? They say ‘If you never try, you never know’ anyways here’s to breaking away from taboo.
16 March No Selfie Day th
A country situated in the western Balkan Peninsula of Europe received Independence just two decades ago when the citizens of Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina voted in the referendum and proclaimed their Independence from the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia on 1st March 1992. A very Happy Independence Day Bosnia and Herzegovina!
Ghana’s Nationhood Day
Just because people don’t call you by your middle name or even know your middle name doesn’t mean you don’t have one, this Middle Name Pride Day, make yourself a commitment and shout to the world your Middle name, it may be better than clichéd names you hang on to.
With selfies becoming ‘The Thing’, it is actually quite hard for one to stop taking pictures of themselves, given the perfect portable equipment to enable them to take quite prettier than reality pictures but Darling you don’t want to come off as Modern Day Narcissus, try No Selfie Day, it is bound to help you!
Yep! Middle is my Middle name.
18th March Awkward Moments Day
9th March Panic Day
Ever wished for the floor to swallow you alive because you won’t stop being awkward, ever suffered from nonstop awkward situations you don’t even want to think about it, if you are one of the awkwardly awkward people out there, good news folks, this day is for you, just be yourself!
6th March 1957 marked the end of British colonial rule in Ghana, since then the 6th of March is commemorated as their Independence Day, and this year it marks 59th anniversary of Ghana being a free nation. May you all celebrate in all the glory!
Mauritian Independence Day
31st March Eiffel Tower Day
In 1968 the Island country of Mauritius located in Indian Ocean received their independence from the British rule. The British has ruled Mauritius from 1810 to 1968, Mauritius experienced almost 160 years of foreign rule. To the world in which keeping sanity is almost like a religion, and ‘don’t panic’ is uttered on regular basis because we are humans and humans by nature is calm creature.
Mauritius and India shared the same sentiments as they were under same British rule, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, one of the leading figures in Indian Independence movement helped the Mauritian Indian Community to organize themselves and Mauritius celebrates its National Day on 12th March.
But we are not calm creature, our ancestral history have us linked with apes and apes are anything but calm. And sudden outbreaks of panics is necessary to keep us balanced, and there it is, Panic Day! Boom! If anyone as much as slightly utter ‘don’t pa…’ while you are having your perfect share of Panic Day, punch them in the face, or anyone who gives a look, punch them too but at your own risk.
Completed in the year 1889 by architecture Gustave Eiffel, Eiffel tower is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Paris, built mainly to commemorate French Revolution. For popular tower like Eiffel it sure deserves its own day and so Eiffel Tower Day be it.
Sir Seewoosagar Ramoolam went on to become first Prime Minister of a free country. Wishing Mauritius Happy 49thIndependence Day!

Economical Driving Tips
Small changes in your driving style can save a lot of fuel. Follow these tips and learn how to go further for less. Take care of your car
Are you turned on or off?
Slippery customer
Timing is everything
The fuel rule
A well-tuned engine will save a surprising amount of Fuel. And all it takes is some simple maintenance and routine servicing.
Idling gets you nowhere, but still burns fuel. As a rule, if you’re in a queue, or waiting for someone for more than 10 seconds – switch off your engine.
Opening your windows or piling bikes and boxes onto the roof can heavily impact your fuel economy by increasing the drag on the air. Driving faster will also increase the wind resistance you encounter, causing your vehicle to use more fuel.
Driving in heavy stop-start traffic is going to negatively affect fuel economy. So if you’re a commuter, avoid the rush hours when you can. You’ll really notice the improvement in fuel consumption.
Not all fuels are the same. Better fuels burn more efficiently and can improve your fuel economy. So always choose one of high quality.
Lighten up
Easy does it
No drain, no pain
Open your eyes
Get pumped up
Every extra pound or kilo can affect your fuel efficiency. So keep your boot and back seat clear of unnecessary items that can add weight to your vehicle (e.g. golf clubs).
The higher gear you drive in, the lower your engine speed is, which can improve fuel efficiency. So always change up a gear whenever your car comfortably can.
As a rule, anything that puts a drain on the battery will put a drain on your fuel economy – like air conditioning. But worse still is a battery in poor condition. So keep a check on your battery’s health.
Think ahead when you’re driving. Slow down early at red lights, rather than stopping completely, or speed up a bit before you reach the foot of a hill. All these little things can add up to improved fuel economy.
Correctly inflated tyres are not only safer and last longer. But they will also reduce drag on the road, improving your overall fuel economy.

28 The Stamford Student Centre; Encouraging New Ways of Learning Student life at Stamford International University now has a new dimension. At a prestigious opening ceremony last month the Governor of Phetchaburi Province officially opened a major initiative, the Stamford Student Centre.
The Governor Chatporn Ratsadudee, the Deputy Secretary of the Chai Pattana Foundation, the Vice President of the Federation of Thai Industries, the Director of the National Innovation Agency and the Associate Dean for Innovation and Research Stamford Graduate School were the guests of honour at the opening. They joined Dr. Andrew D. Scown, President of Stamford International University and Mr. Pierre Bourgoin, Assistant President, Hua Hin Campus who explained the ideas behind this initiative and offered their perspectives on Stamford University’s vision for the future. “The new Student Centre is a place where students can gather informally, yet productively, in collaborative, meaningful activities. This will be a place for cross-cultural clubs, industry projects, entrepreneurship assignments, and recreation so that – like in many innovative companies around world – people can also take a pause and allow their creative ‘juices’ to flow.” Pierre Bourgoin “It is indeed an exciting time for us all at Stamford – and for our students especially – who will benefit greatly from new facilities and will have the opportunity today to hear from thought leaders in the area about their vision on what may lie ahead for today’s generation of university students.” Dr Andrew D. Scown
This Month in Hua Hin
Now knowledge is open— not just facts and figures, but also analysis, interpretation, and curation of knowledge. This means that the traditional role of ‘lecturer’ is moving towards a ‘learning advisor’ to help students reflect on their needs and guide students through self-paced activities and resources to help them achieve their goals. The Stamford Student Centre recognises these changes. The traditional learning environment of the classroom and lecture venues will not disappear, but facilitating and guiding students in their discovery of information on-line is a new priority. Five years ago one University Vice-Chancellor said “Our major competitor in ten years’ time will be Google”. At Stamford, Google (and other online resources), are not seen as competitors. Information alone cannot fully meet a student’s needs without the context, guidance and social setting provided by a university campus.
And remember; you can’t always believe what you find on the ‘net!
A two-time Grammy award winner will jazz up a March weekend at a new Hua Hin venue accompanied by some funk, pop and mor lam sounds. Piano and organ prodigy Cory Henry will tag along with the Funk Apostles to bring melodious jazz to Hua Hin e at the upcoming Jazz Festival. The event will be held from 6pm to midnight, Friday & Saturday March 24th and 25th, at True Arena Hua Hin. Jazz artists to join include saxophone artist Benny Golson, American jazz fusion quartet The Yellowjackets and guitarist Al Mckay’s Earth, Wind and Fire Experience. Thanachia “Pod” Ujjin from Modern Dog will perform along with leading jazz musicians united in the Thailand All-Stars Jazz Orchestra.
Dr Scown also introduced a panel discussion “i see 2020”, which explored the four pillars described as essential for operations moving towards the future. They were also the pillars upon which the University was built just over 21 years ago: Internationalisation, Industry Connectedness, Innovation, and Integrity. Universities globally are responding to the changing relationship between information traditionally held within university domains and research institutes but now available to anyone globally with a device and connectivity.
Jazz at True Arena
Breaking some boundaries, Thai soul band Soul After Six will weigh in on the jazz vibe, as will mor lam sounds by the internationally renowned Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band. The Stamford Student Centre is Officially Opened

The River Kwai, or more specifically the ‘Bridge On the River Kwai’, is well known internationally and the main reason why many travellers visit Kanchanaburi. Ironically when the David Lean’s blockbuster 1957 movie of that name came out, thousands of tourists flocked to see the bridge on the River Kwai, but there wasn’t one; there was only a bridge over the Mae Khlung. This was something of a problem so with lateral thinking, the river was renamed. Since 1960, the Mae Khlung has been known as the Kwai Yai (‘Big Kwai’) north of the confluence with the Kwai Noi (‘Little Kwai’), including under the infamous Bridge. their respects to the fallen. Attending these ceremonies is a very sobering, solemn but uplifting experience especially for Australians and New Zealanders on their most important national memorial day.

The bridge on the River Kwai is part of the “Death Railway,” so called due to the number of Thai labourers as well as around 7,000 British, 3,000 Australians and many other Allied prisoners of war from the Netherlands, USA, New Zealand and other nations who died during its construction from 1942 to 1943. The World War II railroad was engineered by Japan in order to create a military link between Thailand and Burma. The brutal use of more than 60,000 Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the railway is considered to be one of the worst atrocities of the Second World War. The Bridge is now surrounded by cafes, shops and steam locomotives on static display. To learn more about the railway many visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum and the JEATH War Museum. Visitors also walk the trail through Hellfire Pass, a narrow gorge cut through solid rock as part of the Death Railway.

Try a trek following a nature trail surrounded by rainforest, maybe a boat ride along the River Kwai Noi or an overnight stay in a floating bungalow in nearby Sai Yok Yai National Park. You’ll have time to relax and enjoy the splendid scenery, swimming and body rafting in the river if you wish. Kanchanaburi is a bustling town some 230 kilometres from Hua Hin and a popular getaway. Perhaps the best way to get around town is by hiring a bicycle for 40 or 50 THB a day. Many guesthouses now offer bikes (as well as motorbikes), but there’s no shortage of rental shops. Given that Kanchanaburi is spread out for five kilometres along the river, it’s a practical way to explore the town. Getting To Kanchanaburi Driving to Kanchanaburi is a straightforward but uninspiring journey. First head towards Bangkok then take the more northerly route after Khao Yai towards Ratchaburi. You’ll bypass that city until taking the signed road towards Kanchanaburi. Public buses and private rental transport from Hua Hin is also easy to find. The final 60 or so kilometres you’ll be joining traffic from Bangkok on a two-laned road with frequent traffic lights making this part of the trip slow and tiresome. What could have been a two and a half hour drive becomes an hour or more longer, don’t underestimate the time it will take. Accommodation based around and on the river is plentiful and easy to find without prebooking. Searching online also offers all levels of hotel, resort or bungalow options. It’s worth doing some research about the location of your preferred accommodation before booking or you may find yourself isolated from the attractions of the town.

Which One is the Evidence for House Ownership? It is generally known that Foreigners cannot have Ownership of Land because it is forbidden by law, but they can have Ownership of a Building on the Land because there is no provision of law to clearly prevent this, therefore, to buy Property in Thailand it is often advised by a Lawyer or the Seller that Foreigners buy a Leasehold for Land and Freehold for House together. The evidence of Land Ownership is legally shown by the Land Title Deed which is issued by the competent Land Office, as provided by the Land Code. With regard to the House there is No Official Evidence, as provided by law, which has been issued by any Government Department, e.g. Title Deed, Certificate etc. This matter leads to legal problems of what is legal evidence of Ownership for the House or Building. In practice many different kinds of documents have been used to show Ownership of the House e.g. Blue Book / Yellow Book / Construction Permit / House Construction Contract / House Purchasing Contract / and Court Order, but which one of these can be legally used? Blue Book and Yellow Book - There is a misunderstanding that the Blue and Yellow Books are Evidence of House Ownership, but in reality it is actually not evidence. This document is only evidence of the Official House Address and a list of people living there.
The Blue Book is for Thai Nationals and the Yellow Book is for Foreigners, therefore, the Blue Book and Yellow Book are not to be used as Evidence of the House Ownership. Construction Permit – This type of document is issued by the Local Official under the Construction Control Law because before the construction of any Building / House the Owner or the Contractor must apply for Permission to Build and submit the Architectural and Engineering Drawings of the House to the Authorities to prove that the House will be constructed following to the Engineering Standards, then the Authority may issue the Permit to construct and will make an inspection of the construction to ensure compliance with the Drawings. The said Construction Permit is not actually the evidence of the House Ownership but in such a document the House Owner is named and it is issued by the Local Officer so that the Holder of that document can use this as the evidence of House Ownership. Occasionally when applying for such permission, the House Owner does not
submit the Application himself, he appoints his Construction Contractor / his Lawyer / Agent / etc to do this on his behalf, and the appointed person applies for the Construction Permit in his name as the Applicant and not the Owner. The Local Office occasionally issues the Permit in the name of the Applicant as the Owner and not the actual House Owner.
House Purchasing Contract – This is a direct evidence of House Ownership because you bought it. The House is an immovable property and when buying or selling the Purchasing Contract will be void unless it is made in writing and its Ownership Transfer must be registered with the competent Registrar (Land Office), paying Tax and Transfer Fees as provided by law.
When the house is constructed such person claims that they have Ownership of the House because they were named in the Construction Permit, in this matter the Contractor / Lawyer / etc cannot claim that they have Ownership of the House because the real Owner is the Employer, as defined in the Construction Contract, therefore, the real Owner is legally able to correct the Construction Permit at a later date.
For the First Transfer of Ownership of the House, the Land Office always asks the Seller to submit the House Construction Permit as the evidence of House Ownership for his consideration before approval. For Subsequent Transfers of House Ownership the Seller/s can refer to the evidence of the previous registration of transfer/s.
It is important that the Application for the Construction Permit needs is made correct from the beginning to prevent the legal issue of the House Ownership. House Construction Contract – This is the document made between the Employer and the Contractor. The House and its Ownership which is constructed under this document belongs to the Employer by law because he built his own House and did not buy or receive the House from anyone, therefore, this kind of House Ownership acquisition is not subject to Registration / Tax or any Fee the same as purchasing a House. The House Construction Contract is one of the best documents for legal evidence for House Ownership.
Court Order – In case there are many people who claim Ownership of one House e.g. Mr A claims that he has Ownership of the House according to the Construction Permit, and Mr B claims he has Ownership of the House via the Construction Contract, then they can take this matter to the Court for a decision. The Court decision, which is made in favour of any Party, is the evidence of House Ownership, binding to the Parties involved and also any Third Person as provided by the Civil Procedure Code. Hopefully this article will give you some insight into the actual Ownership of your House. Any reader who is suspicious regarding the acquisition of Ownership of their house can refer to the above.
Banyan’s Turf Expert is Royal Birkdale Bound Minachai was unanimously elected by the agronomy crew for his stand-out contributions and in recognition of his work, he has been presented with an award that will provide him with a unique opportunity where he will be able to work with the team at Royal Birkdale to assist in the preparation of that course for this year’s Open Championship.
Visiting Royal Birkdale as a spectator to watch the July 2017 Open Championship unravel is a huge treat. To be physically present on the turf where golf had its origins is almost a religious experience. But to be at Royal Birkdale and to be part of the team preparing the golf course for what is effectively the greatest tournament in golfing’s annual calendar is an opportunity and an experience that only happens to a few. The one man fortunate to be granted this opportunity is Minachai Srichanya (pictured), the chief agronomist attached to GLS, the management company behind the award-winning Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin, Thailand.
This has been made possible by Johnston who is a professional committed to upgrading knowledge and standards in golf course agronomy amongst golf course superintendents in the region. “This is really a wonderful opportunity for me”, said Minachai who went on to add, “It is a new milestone in my career and it is really the ultimate award for me.” Commenting on Minachai’s award, Stacey Walton, director and general manager of the Banyan Golf Club said, “We are very proud of Minachai - he has assisted the crew at Sentosa for the Singapore Open several times and to be awarded the opportunity to work with the R&A and the team at Royal Birkdale for the Open Championship is a chance of a lifetime and a testament to his hard work and professional development.”
Minachai, the proud recipient of the Best Golf Course Superintendent in Asia award presented by the Asian Golf Awards received the latest recognition for the outstanding role that he played in helping the team at Sentosa Agronomy to prepare the Serapong course for the recently concluded Singapore Open. “Minachai is an invaluable member of the team that we assemble annually to help with the preparation of the course and it is also part of our program to expose Asian superintendents to world class agronomical practices, “said Andy Johnston, general manager of the Sentosa Golf Club.

353 The Milford Estate Rapidly Becoming the Milford Community
There comes a time when a housing estate needs to offer residents much more than just a house to live in. It needs to become an integrated community with a sense of belonging and pride. The Milford Estate is offering that sense of community; location, nearby facilities and an identity so that residents feel like they are really at home. One very proud Milford property owner is Beatrice from Switzerland. She knew from her first visit that she had found her special place and has already stamped her personality on her home with a garden featuring her favourite statue, a birthday present all the way from Switzerland. “Meieli” is the name of a full-sized ornamental cow which Beatrice jokingly says keeps her grassed area in shape and the household supplied with fresh milk! Meieli even has a genuine Swiss cow bell around her neck. Beatrice is just one Milford home owner who has found that sense of community. The Milford Estate Sales Gallery Of course Soi 102 offers ready access to downtown Hua Hin with both Market Village and Blúport being the community’s ‘local’ shopping precincts. It’s a very desirable location with privacy and a peaceful way of life on offer. Jan Torpling the Swedish Sales Executive with 11 years Milford experience knows his way around this very international community. It’s not one of those enclaves where one nationality dominates and almost ceases to be a real part of Thailand.
Swiss resident Beatrice taking care of Maieli Down the road a beer garden is taking shape and ‘7 Grams’, the home of coffee roasters and restaurant which the locals call their home eatery providing breakfast through to an evening mixed Thai/European menu. There’s nothing like the aroma of fresh coffee to imbue that sense of home, especially when it’s just a short stroll away.
Within this community, Stage One of Mil Pool Villas has 128 pool villas completed. Stage Two has 54 two and three bedroom villas with 11 sold and 3 community members in residence, including Beatrice. Mango Tree & Coca Restaurants Forge Ahead Across Asia
Leveraging the group’s proven pedigree as a leading name in genuine Asian cuisine, Mango Tree & COCA Restaurants worldwide has announced aggressive expansion plans for 2017 with new restaurant openings scheduled in Yangon, Mumbai, Hanoi, Osaka and Guangzhou. Hot on the heels of the opening of COCA Restaurant at BluPort Hua Hin, the growth strategy will be supported by the launch of several new culinary concepts at different locations, all of which have been carefully planned to expand the group’s offerings and reach a wider audience of Thai and Asian food lovers.
“We significantly increased our regional brand presence last year in well established markets like Thailand, Vietnam and Hong Kong. We also added Nepal to the portfolio with the launch of Kathmandu’s first branded Thai restaurant, Mango Chilli Café,” explains Mango Tree and Coca Worldwide Managing Director, Trevor MacKenzie. “The next step is to extend our footprint even further and to diversify at the same time by catering to the tastes and service expectations of different clientele in a spread of new locations.” The variety of flavours and ingredients offered at Mango Tree and Coca Restaurants around Asia is as broad and eclectic as the locations covered by the two brands, and a brief tour of the new openings is as much a culinary journey as a geographic one. In Myanmar, a new COCA Restaurant will open in the first quarter of 2017 at the Yangon International Hotel to offer diners a choice of succulent imported meat and fresh seafood dishes, complemented by freshly prepared house-made noodles and organic locally sourced vegetables. Meanwhile in neighbouring India, Mango Tree Mumbai will open in April. The same month will also see the launch of a new Mango Tree Café in Osaka serving famous Thai dishes amid stylish
surroundings with a swift and playful service approach. A new COCA Hanoi also opens in April, hot on the heels of the brand’s fourth restaurant in Vietnam, which opened in 2016 at Aeon Binh Tan mall in Ho Chi Minh City. Rounding off a busy first half of 2017, Mango Tree will arrive in style on the Pearl River in June with the opening a new flagship in Guangzhou, the sprawling Chinese port city located northwest of Hong Kong. There have also been suggestions of a return to Dubai this year, causing considerable speculation on the local food scene where the brand was once an established favourite.
“Despite certain global uncertainties, Mango Tree & COCA Restaurants Worldwide remains committed to its mission of establishing restaurants in every major city around the world,” adds Mr. MacKenzie. “By working with the right partners to deliver quality Thai and Asian cuisine with authentic tastes and genuine service that exceeds customer expectations, we are confident of our continued success.”

2 46 The Chinese Influence on Thai Cuisine
Without doubt the biggest, single influence on Thai cuisine has come from the Chinese. To begin to understand that influence, one must first examine Chinese migration to Thailand over the centuries. Migration Thailand is home to the largest overseas Chinese community in the world. As of 2012, there were approximately 9 million Thais who claimed Chinese ancestry; around 14%. These people are spread the length and breadth of Thailand, with the majority in the Central regions and in Bangkok in particular. Slightly more than half of the ethnic Chinese population in Thailand trace their ancestry to eastern Guangdong Province. As history tells us, with poverty and rampant starvation in the mountainous regions of southern China, many Chinese ethnic groups embarked on the arduous journey towards a better life in places like Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. Many died along the way, but those that made it to Thailand worked very hard, many becoming extremely successful. The Hokkien were good sailors and had no problem making journeys by sea; southern Thailand was generally their destination. They were primarily rice merchants and when they arrived they continued in the trade. Many leading Thai rice merchants are of Hokkien descent.
Chinese-Influenced Dishes With the ever-growing immigrant communities from China came the introduction of different cooking techniques such as stir frying and deep frying, both employing the use of a wok. They introduced the making of broth and several types of noodles, Taochiao (fermented bean paste), Soy Sauces, and Tofu. They also brought different ways to eat the food. Chopsticks were foreign utensils to most in Thailand at the time, though now when eating a Chinese-style noodle soup; most Thais will opt for chopsticks. It is believed that the birthplace of Thai street food was in the Chinatown district, better known as ‘Yaowarat’, due to its prime location of Yaowarat Road. The vast bulk of Thai street food is influenced by Chinese immigrants. Much of the cooking of the entire Central regions of Thailand traces its heritage to China and much of the Southern Thai food bears the hallmark of having Chinese heritage including those introduced by the Hokkien people from around the 15th century, and by the Teochew people who started settling in larger numbers from the late 18th century onward. Many noodle dishes have clear links to China including Ba Mii (บะหมี)่ clear egg noodle soup, Khanom Jiin (ขนมจีน) fermented rice noodles with curry sauces, Guay Chap (ก๋วยจั๊บ) a seriously pork flavoured soup and Guay Tiaw (ก๋วยเตี๋ยว), a noodle soup that has many variations. Other dishes that exhibit Chinese influence are such dishes as Jok (โจ๊ก), a rice porridge, Salapao (ซาลาเปา), steamed buns and Khao Kha Moo (ข้าวขาหมู), fragrant stewed pork with rice. In 1939, Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram supported the change of name of the country from Siam to Thailand. Thailand’s very own Pad Thai became part of a campaign to establish Thai nationalism. At the time, Chinese wheat

noodles were very popular in Thailand; however the government promoted rice noodles to help establish the identity of Thai cuisine.
However the enduring influence of Chinese food can never be denied. Provided by Feast Thailand Food Tours Contact: +66 32 510 207 or info@feastthailand.co, www. feastthailand.com
473 Harvest Time at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard
The Hua Hin Hills Vineyard is no more; so charge your glasses to Monsoon Valley Vineyard, Hua Hin’s fine wining and dining experience in the perfect vineyard setting. threat of heat, rain, hail, and frost which can damage the grapes and bring about various vine diseases.
For more than ten years Monsoon Valley Wines have been producing awardwinning wines served in Thailand’s leading restaurants and five-star hotels and resorts. The wonderful aromatics in Monsoon Valley Wines bring out the best in international, Thai or Asian dishes.
The Monsoon Valley viticulturist Kriansak Thorarit had a beaming face as he added lent his knowledge and discernment to the workers so they pick only healthy bunches and the gently handle the grapes; no mechanical harvesting here. It’s been a fantastic season with the unseasonal wet weather of January being a bonus to the grape growth.
This is an opportunity to tour the vineyard, participate in grape-picking (free labour!) and even to join in the traditional ‘grape stomp’ turning grapes into juice in a wooden barrel and well, ……..’stomping’. It’s easy to see where the dance craze of that name associated with the surfing music from the 60’s got its name.
But having a brand name differing to the name of the vineyard has been confusing and after consideration of the marketing and branding implications a decision was made to give the vineyard the name as the product. From March 1st, visitors will be welcomed to the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. Our visit on 20th February preceded that name change but coincided with the first day of the 2017 harvest season which concludes the end of March. The harvesting of wine grapes is one of the most crucial steps in the process of winemaking. The time of harvest is determined primarily by the ripeness of the grape as measured by sugar, acid and tannin levels with winemakers basing their decision to pick based on the style of wine they wish to produce. The weather can also shape the timetable of harvesting with the

This is an appreciated source of income for local villagers unlike many countries who may use migrant workers. Up to 70% of the employees in the California wine industry are immigrants from Mexico. 539 InterContinental Hua Hin Resort Presents Michelin-starred Chef Jean-marc Banzo
InterContinental Hua Hin Resort is pleased to announce a visit by two-Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Marc Banzo. With a career spanning more than 40 years, the native of France’s Vaucluse region is acclaimed for his culinary approach blending tradition, sophistication and innovation. Chef Jean-Marc himself further describes his cuisine as based on three elements – product, technique and feeling – all of which are essential to creating the kind of Mediterranean-inspired dishes that have earned him two Michelin stars. Jean-Marc Banzo began his career in the early 1970s when he attended catering school in Grenoble, afterwards
apprenticing and working at some of the most highly regarded restaurants in France. Among venues where he developed his art and skill were La Mère Guy in Lyon, Les Santons in Grimaud and Pierre Hiély in Avignon, all two-Michelin-starred establishments. After having received his first Michelin star in 1983 at his Les Caves Henri IV in Aix-en-Provence, by 1986 Chef JeanMarc opened Le Clos de la Violette, also in Aix-en-Provence, where as chef and owner he would earn his second star in 1999.
In addition to two Michelin Guide stars, the chef has received three Gault & Millau Guide toques including for his La Villa Madie restaurant in Cassis. Of late Chef Jean-Marc has gained yet more acclaim for his work as consultant and chef at renowned Renaissance Hotel and Le Clos restaurant in Aix-en-Provence. Jean-Marc Banzo will present his inspired approach to French cookery and cuisine with his assistant, Chef Arnaud Davin at InterContinental Hua Hin Resort on

54 10 American Pastoral
It only the end of the world
follows Seymour “Swede” Levov, a legendary high school athlete, who grows up to marry a former beauty queen and inherits his father’s business.
Summary: After a 12 year absence, a writer (Gaspard Ulliel) returns to his hometown, planning on announcing his upcoming death to his family.
Swede’s seemingly perfect life shatters when his daughter rebels by becoming a revolutionary and committing a deadly act of political terrorism during the Vietnam War.
As resentment soon rewrites the course of the afternoon, fits and feuds unfold, fueled by loneliness and doubt, while all attempts of empathy are sabotaged by people’s incapacity to listen and love.

Trespass Against Us
But with his own son, Tyson (Georgie Smith) coming of age, Chad soon finds himself locked in a battle with his father for the future of his young family. When Colby learns of Chad’s dreams for another life he sets out to tie his son and grandson into the archaic order that has bound the Cutler family for generations.

Poncherello (Michael Peña). He’s partnered with wild rookie officer Jon Baker (Shepard), a former pro motorbiker trying to win over his unimpressed wife (Shepard’s real life wife, Kristen Bell). Their styles clash, but the duo will need to put aside their differences to investigate the illegal activity going on within the CHP. Grown-up fans of the TV show should know that there’s very little here for kids. In addition to action violence like explosions, shoot-outs, and even a beheading, expect frequent strong language, drug use, crude sexual humor, and graphic nudity.
He engineers a spectacular piece of criminal business involving a heist, a high-speed car chase and a manhunt, which leaves Chad bruised and bloodied and with his very freedom at stake. With the law cracking down and his father tightening his grip, Chad is forced into increasingly desperate measures.
TRESPASS AGAINST US is set across three generations of the Cutler family who live as outlaws in their own anarchic corner of Britain’s richest countryside. Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) is heir apparent to his bruising criminal father, Colby (Brendan Gleeson) and has been groomed to spend his life hunting, thieving and tormenting the police. Parents need to know that CHIPS is an action comedy about a pair of California Highway Patrol motorcycle cops. Based on the hit 1970s/1980s TV show of the same name, this version looks a lot raunchier. Starring, written by, and directed by Dax Shepard, CHIPS follows a cocky, hardened FBI agent who goes undercover as CHP officer Frank “Ponch”

Chinese Swap Hometown Comforts for a Lunar New Year Abroad
Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for Chinese people to reunite with distant relatives after long journeys to ancestral hometowns, but this year more than 6m are expected to go abroad.
By custom, the festival involves a return home for a family meal before midnight, followed by days of visits to relatives’ houses. However, observance of these customs is becoming less strict.
This year’s Spring Festival fels on Saturday, when the year of the monkey gave way to that of the rooster. It is one of only two lengthy annual holidays enjoyed by most Chinese people.
“There are only three people in my immediate family, said Ms Qi, 35. “We are not that close to other relatives, so there’s no need to get together with them.
“For us, the festival is mainly a vacation period, said a Beijing woman surnamed Qi, who will be in Okinawa, Japan, for the festival, leaving her parents at home. The number of travelers venturing outside the mainland for the festival is expected to break last year’s record of more than 5.7 million, officials say. Travelers are expected to spend more than US$14 billion on visits to 174 destinations this season, leaving the country for an average of nine days. Thailand, South Korea and Japan are the most popular destinations.
Air pollution has become a crucial factor driving international travel, the state-run China Tourism Academy said this week. FOOD & Entertainment, March 2017
