EDITORIAL FOREWORD

ere we go again. It has to be said. If any country in this world who knows how to celebrate their royalties, it is the United Kingdom. Whilst William is only cueing for the Throne, with Prince Charles waiting for his mum to pass it on, he may have to wait for a while. I like the Dutch way of royal retirement a lot better. A young King or queen is just a bit more contemporary. I never knew that the UK has no constitution but a lot of international law is based on British law. However the Firm is well represented on facebook and twitter. So the youngsters do have a modern streak. Controversial Guru Sai Baba died in India after his body gave up which makes you think and wonder. He “cures” thousands but can’t help himself. With floating Gurus and a magical Sai, his opponents accused him of misconduct with minors but with no actions against the accusations as usual. Even charismatic John Paul is forgiven for looking away and his silence, soon becomes a saint and Benedict will probably be forgiven for going into a protective mode, if you know what I mean. It goes beyond my humble comprehension that big organisations as the one in Rome can get away with the crime of their members and are not punished by national or international laws, hiding behind their robes. But now I am getting too clear. It is the not the

usual editor with his massive confusion editorial, Well here I go: Solar Air is flying out of Hua Hin soon for 2,700baht to Bangkok at 5 pm, the right time to miss an appointment, spend the night in BKK and hurry for another appointment to fly back again at 3:30. With 1 hour drive or ride to the airport you might as well stay two nights. Great planning! What a world! First they play soccer with each other, celebrate Songkran and than shoot at each other. Earth day has got it in it. We collect plastic bags from the street, give them to a recycling company who recycles and sells the oil to a BKK refinery. At least it cleans up our back yards and side streets. The garbage depot on Soi 112 grows and grows and smells and smells. It was suggested to cover it and grow grass on it as they do in western countries as the smell, bacteria and gasses and sickering liquids, uncontrolled hospital waste contaminate our ground waters and atmosphere and are a danger to our health. In order to really tackle environmental problems, a plan should be made, time scheduled and supervised execution. No, not shoot people, but do the plans. With most of Arabia on fire and Manchester United going for the Championship, the World Bank´s forecast for a next financial disaster goes practically unnoticed. Friend Obama and party have a lot of dollars to make up for, to

save the nation from bankruptcy whilst a Mexican drug dollars found is burned as they could not re-allocate the 221 million dollars in the house. As we improve our website, we would appreciate your comments and suggestions. Had a positive experience at the new Bangkok Hospital as I dropped a 13,000 RPM flex steel cutter on my calf ( leg), at home, which then had to be mended. The flex survived and I was about 25 stitches richer. Service, surgery and efficiency were very nicely coordinated. Good job at the Bangkok hospital. Anyone interested in a 2nd hand Makita Flex ? Isn’t it amazing that, within only one week of Tiger Woods crashing his Escalade, the press found every woman with whom Tiger has had an affair during the last few years? And, they even uncovered photos, text messages, recorded phone calls, etc.! Furthermore, they not only know the cause of the family fight, but they even know it was a wedge from his golf bag that his wife used to break out the windows in the Escalade. Not only that, they know which wedge! And, each & every day, they were able to continue to provide America with updates on Tiger’s sex rehab stay, his wife’s plans for divorce, as well as the dates & tournaments in which he will play. Now here it comes : President Barack Hussein Obama has been in office for two years, yet this very

same press: Cannot find any of his childhood friends or neighbors; Or find any of Obama’s high school or college classmates; Or locate any of his college papers or grades; Or determine how he paid for both a Columbia & a Harvard education; Or discover which country issued his visa to travel to Pakistan in the 1980’s; Or even find Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis on racism. They just can’t seem to uncover any of this. Yet, the public still trusts that same press to give them the whole truth! Simply amazing, isn’t it? Yours Truly GMoss

Diverse Tourism in Style Central Thailand to Join

H

ua Hin will take part in the Diverse Tourism in Style project, a new tourism promotion plan for 2012 proposed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Tourism Business Association of Thailand and the Hua Hin Municipality. Serving as a new marketing strategy on tourism promotion of Thailand, the project will start on 4 November 2011. With an aim to create a new image of Central Thailand as a part of diverse and enchanting tradition and culture, this project covers such provinces as Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Ayudhaya, Suphan Buri, Lopburi, Petchaburi, Samut Songkram and Prachuab Khirikhan. To welcome tourists coming to Thailand next year, it features 6 main characteristics of Central Thailand: charming beaches, paradise in the west, everlasting tradition, untrodden historic sites, green adventure and delighting Bangkok. According to the Director of the TAT, this project will call for participation of local and provincial organizations who would like to promote their tourist attraction for more visitors.

By Chamnan Puengjoh

Once the project is approved, information of all participating tourist attractions will be sent to embassies of Europe and Scandinavia. As part of Prachuab Khirikhan, Hua Hin, a very famous beachfront town for Thais and foreigners, will play a key role under this project on revered tradition reflected through architectural heritages like Buddhist temples and festive events such as Songkran, Loy Krathong and annual sport activities. Since this project allows local communities to participate, all communities in Hua Hin have to think about how to attract visitors with their unique culture and tourist attractions as well. Should this marketing plan be successful, it will be expanded to other provinces of Central Thailand to accommodate visitors who come here in different time, not only during the high season.

8th Annual Preserve Hua Hin The Anantarak Nursing Heavy Half Marathon & Care School to hold Fun Run for Environmental causes Charity for Southern Thailand Supansa Kraiwaad

T

he 8th Hua Hin Heavy Half Marathon will take place on 29 May 2011 from 4 a.m. onwards at the Hin Lek Fire Mountain. Hosted by the Preserve Hua Hin Group and the Hua Hin Municipality, this year’s event aims to raise awareness on environmental threat in Hua Hin while promoting good health among Thai people. Mr. Kris Rojanasathira, the Chairman of the Preserve Hua Hin Group under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, said that the Group usually organized activities on environmental preservation in Hua Hin all year round since the city had many beautiful tourist attractions that attracted visitors. While some tourists are concerned over environmental threat that seems to rise gradually, others are still ignorant. The 8th Hua Hin Marathon is therefore an event that not only promotes good health for Thai people but also calls for their commitment on environmental protection.

This year, the event has two competitions: the 21.100 kilometer half marathon and the 10.550 kilometer quarter marathon for males and females. There is a jogging for good health but the winner for this category will be awarded a medal. Those who win the half and the quarter marathons will receive a trophy conferred by the Princess Sirindhorn. Moreover, both winners are entitled to a special lucky draw for a computer, a television and other prizes. Application for the event is now available. Registration can also be made at the Hin Lek Fire Mountain on 28 May from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. or on 29 May at 4 a.m. Registration Fee for the half marathon is 350 baht per person, 200 baht per person for quarter marathon and the 3 kilometer jogging. Further information on this event can be required at the Preserve Hua Hin Group at tel. 032 536 536 and the Hua Hin Municipality at tel. 032 511 047 ext. 101 and 102.

T

he Anantarak Nursing Care School is organizing a charity entitled, “Spirit of Hua Hin for Southern Thailand” on 4 May from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Phon Kingpetch Memorial Park. According to Ms. Pornrawee Sileungsawad, the Director of the Anantarak Nursing Care School, not only are many provinces in the south of Thailand facing constant insurgency caused by terrorists and separatists but they also suffer from natural disasters, particularly the recent flood that damaged property and blocked transportation to and from the areas. Both incidents are making life of local people there more difficult. Concerned over such problems, the school is calling for donations – whether money or things – for the people living in the flood-hitting areas of Southern Thailand. All donations will be

forwarded to the Thai Community Foundation who established the Baan Nam Khem Tsunami Relief Center. A survey done by the Foundation revealed that 100 households were in real need for temporary shelters, each of which cost around 25,000 Baht. So, fundraising has to be carried out immediately. As part of the fundraising activity, “The Spirit of Hua Hin for Southern Thailand” charity features a concert of local artists and music for life singers besides product displays and sales of 1,000 T-shirt, happy dolls made by the Anantarak Nursing Care School, and music CDs of the local artists. Visitors can attend the event and make donation there. Further information can be inquired at tel. 081 6466374 and 081 8743142.

R

ecently officially opened by the Commander of the Royal Thai Police Office and the Prachuab Khirikhan Police Commander, the Hua Hin 191 Emergency Center is the first following Bangkok to introduce a modern and high-tech innovation on emergency notification used in many countries worldwide. Those reporting any crime or call for emergency services anywhere in Hua Hin can do so via modern communication devices, such as mobiles phones, or mobile Pads and home phones. Once connected to the center by dailing 191 on their phone and inform an authority about the incident, an inspector in the nearby the area will immediately proceed to the scene. Within the Hua Hin municipal area, CCTVs are installed at electricity posts. Irregularities captured by the machines are be transmitted to the Emergency Center, thus helping officers to identify a wrongdoer or criminal action. Electronic recording boxes or so called red boxes will be located around the city. The boxes help police inspectors to work more effectively as they place their I.D. card on the box and the signal will turn up at the Emergency Center’s control room. Pol. Gen. Wichien Potphosri, the Commander of the Royal Thai Police Office, said that opening the Hua Hin 191 Emergency Center is an active strategy of the government and the Thai Royal Police Office to protect life and

he advisors to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Council of Thailand have monitored the Singkhon checkpoint in Prachuab Khirikhan and liaised with officials in Myanmar to map the watershed area as Thailand and Myanmar border and set up a checkpoint. The Singkhon will be open within this year.

property of people in Thailand. Besides, it is responsible for taking care of His Majesty the King and royal family members when they are staying in Hua Hin as well. “Since we already have technological improvements, we urgently need to increase our police force. Presently, the Royal Thai Police force counts 212,000 officers nationwide. This is not enough for the growing number of residents and visitors and the increasing crime rates in the country. Cooperation from residents, volunteers, community invigilators known in Thai as ‘Home Police’ and traffic police volunteers, is much needed,” added Pol. Gen. Wichien. “In Hua Hin, 7,000 more police officers are to be employed to work at the Hua Hin Police Office.” The pilot project on Hua Hin 191 Emergency Center, if successful, will soon be expanded to all provinces in other parts of Thailand, concluded Pol. Gen. Wichien.

According to the advisors, the recent monitor at the Singkhon checkpoint yielded 3 main processes Thai authorities have to carry out. The first one is indicating a clear Thai and Burmese border, using the watershed area to separate the two nations. This should be discussed with the Burmese authorities. The second process concerns how to set up a checkpoint system there. The Department of Public Works and Urban Planning of Prachuab Khirikhan Provincial Office will be responsible for this with the budget of 25 million baht. Finally, the Interior Ministry will work on setting up a Thai border checkpoint and an immigration center there. ...Read more on page 38...

Legal Advice 9

Volume 8 issue 7 May 2011

W

Rule One. Always be polite and even friendly with the police if you can manage it. In western countries it may (sometimes) be useful to be irate, angry or act like Perry Mason with public servants such as the police. Perry Mason, you’ll recall, was the famous TV lawyer who was always right, but told everybody off. In Thailand it is never the correct time to act like Perry Mason. Even if you are a lawyer.

e’re going to start our series on criminal law and procedure in Thailand with an explanation of the basic concepts. You must know these to understand how to deal with specific problems that we will discuss later. The first basic concept is arrest. This simply means the police take you into custody and you’re not free to go. In later columns we’ll expand on how long and where a suspect can be kept and what rights he or she has under arrest, but for now just assume arrest means the suspect is not free to go. If a police officer comes to your house or office and questions you about something, say a work permit violation, or asks you to come with him or her, are you under arrest? A police officer will normally tell you that you are under arrest if you are. If nothing is said, which can happen with foreigners if only because of the language barrier, you can simply ask if you’re under arrest. The police officer must tell you. A short aside. You’re practically always better off dealing with the police when you have a native Thai-speaking friend with you, ideally one who is adept at inter-cultural situations. Thus if you’re not under arrest and can politely arrange an alternative to an immediate trip to the police station, make an appointment to appear at a later time with your friend in tow. How do the police get the right to arrest someone? Under Section 66 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Thailand allows a court to issue an arrest warrant against you if there is

reasonable evidence to believe: • that you have committed a crime for which the maximum penalty is more than three years in jail or • that you have committed a crime and you are evading arrest or • that you may cause some danger to the public as a result of a crime. If you have no fixed address or don’t show up when summoned by the police, the court may decide you are evading arrest and also issue a warrant to have you arrested on this ground. There are other grounds on which a police officer can arrest you, and we’ll deal with these next week. For now, however, in the space alloted, we want to give you our two rules for

Rule Two. Don’t be without the basics, ever. Always carry a photocopy of your passport photo and visa pages and your work permit if you have one. These can be folded small enough to fit in your wallet. Always have a cell phone with the number of a Thai friend or associate who is culturally sensitive as discussed above. You should take these items with you everywhere—shopping, out with friends, on a short drive to the beach. Even (or especially) places where you would never expect to have a run-in with the police. Because that’s where it’s going to happen. More about arrest next time. * Chavalit Finch & Partners, Ltd. are lawyers specializing in real estate and business transactions. interest loan campaign

hailand’s Government Housing Bank (GHB) is considering launching a campaign offering zero per cent interest rate loans for the first two years for people buying a home under THB3 million (US$100,200). “The Finance Ministry has asked for a way to help middle and low income brackets buy residences with lower cost by offer a soft loan of THB50 billion (US$.167 billion) for this campaign,” a source from GHB told The Nation. The bank now is finding the best conditions for homebuyers and plans to launch the campaign on May 1, 2011, the source said. Currently, residential home sales of units under THB3 million cover between 40 per cent and 45 per cent of the Thai market for a total value about THB250 billion (US$8.35 billion) a year.

L

Development firms would welcome the campaign because it will boost the property market at a time when interest rates are rising. Pruksa Real Estate Plc’s director and chief business officer Prasert Taedullayasatit said that GHB campaign would improve the market because lower to middle income buyers will cut about 6 to 7 per cent of their costs in buying a residence for the first two years. The Bangkok residential market recorded THB36.7 billion in sales in the first two months of this year, down 27 per cent from THB50.1 billion in the same period last year, according to research by the Real Estate Information Centre. imitations on foreign ownership in Thailand are preventing overseas buyers from entering the market, it has been claimed. Bangkok, in particular, did not witness any notable deals and income through real estate during the fourth quarter of 2010, a new report from CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) has claimed. “Although there have been concerns regarding the influx of foreign capital into Thailand, the various restrictions on foreign investment ensured the real estate investment market remained largely dominated by domestic players,” the consultancy confirmed. Indeed, CBRE explained that the market was completely dominated by local buyers following a decision to raise the policy interest rate three times in the second half of 2010.

The Bank of Thailand also announced that it would be decreasing LTV’s for condominiums to 90 per cent and LTV’s for houses to 95 per cent. Despite this, CBRE concluded that the moves have not had any major negative impacts on the property market, with Thailand’s major property firms even announcing dozens of new building projects for 2011.

Listed developer LPN Development is a new name in the resort town market. The company recently launched its first condominium project in Pattaya called Lumpini Condotown North Pattaya-Sukhumvit, a THB1.2 billion (US$40.13 million) project that will feature 1,500 units with a price tag of THB699,000 (US$23,378) onwards.

Village and Crystal Park are two retail malls in Bangkok that are very different. Large open areas, low – slung buildings and lots of parking area make malls like this popular very quickly. Developers of these malls are newcomers in the retail business, but they have proved that having the right product translates to success in a competitive market. The right product in this case means good location, design and functions that represent what customers want. A mall like the low-rise, open-style K Village would possibly not be developed if the land were to be purchased at the current prices, because returns on investment would not be feasible. Options for developers who have purchased land at current market prices are definitely more limited. Most recently purchased land is typically developed at the ratio allowed, resulting in development options which offer high returns but do not guarantee success. As for landlords who have long been holding their land in excess of a decade or more, their original land cost would be negligible compared to the overall development cost. This certainly gives old-time landlords a competitive edge in product differentiation.

NC Housing is another listed developer who wants to focus more on Pattaya market this year. It plans to launch a new project in the second half of this year. Last year, the firm just launched the semidetached house project under the name The Green Park Jomtien. Other developers who have been key players in Pattaya market include Raimon Land and Major Development from Bankok, as well as the Pattaya-based developer Iguana Group. A real estate agent Bangkok CitiSmart has noticed that demand for properties in the area remains strong from both local and overseas homebuyers. Since the firm opened its branch in Pattaya last year, it managed to sell and rent about 400 units worth a total of THB2.4 billion (US$80.27 million). Meanwhile, international property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle also sees positive signs in Pattaya property market and is planning to open a management office here in the second quarter of this year.

Bangkok Mall Landlords Need to Think out of the Box for Best Option

“We see strong demand from both residents in Pattaya as well as Bangkokians, who want to buy a second home,” said Opas Sripayak, managing director of LPN Development.

be because sometimes the best option does not mean developing to a maximum plot ratio. The fact is that developers with little or no experience should not just aim for maximising profit, but consider minimising the risk as well. They should opt for small-scale developments, which would translate to low investment and risk. Bangkok has several flea markets selling everything from food to fashion. Most of these markets are located near office buildings and play a significant role in the lifestyle of locals. Given the right location and land size, developing a flea market is an option that should not been overlooked. One great example of this is Soi La Lai Sap, which has expanded into the successful Trinity Mall. Other options could be converting the land into a car park. This would work particularly well in prime CBD areas with a high concentration of restaurants and entertainment venues such as Langsuan or Thonglor, where there is often a lack of parking space.

These options require minimal investment, generate consistent income and allow the owner to hold on the land. In comparison, developing large-scale projects requires significant expenditure up front, and that often means taking Nowadays, owners of land in prime locations a bank loan with most of the receivables coming tend to stick to the proven formula of building in after project completion. residential condominiums for sale, or in some As a landowner, if you can think out of the box, instances, if they want to hung on to the land, a there are enough untapped opportunities and uses mixed-used development comprising of either a for your land that do not necessarily conform to shopping centre, hotel, office or residences for the norm. Malaysia’s Mah Sing confident Property Magazine of the Year of achieving US$667 million Kanchana Paha sales target for the year Kanchana Paha P M

roperty Report South East Asia has been named Property Magazine of the Year by the respected Singapore-based Marketing magazine. The annual Magazine of the Year survey looked at documenting the magazines preferred by agencies and client marketers in Singapore. There are currently more than 3,000 titles are available on the Singapore news stands. More than 78 per cent of client and advertiser respondents to the Marketing magazine survey were manager level decision-makers and above, with almost a quarter from the most senior ranks. Participants included advertisers from major banks, fast moving consumer goods companies, property developers, IT and telecommunications firms and the public sector.

T

he construction of the 22-storey, US$60 million Phnom Penh Tower is scheduled to be finished by the end of April, The Phnom Penh Post has reported. “We already completed 95 percent [of the tower],” said Hong Youvoin, Marketing Manager of the South Korean company behind the tower, Hyundai Amco Co. “We’re preparing the grand opening ceremony for the end of this month or beginning next month.”

The office skyscraper on Monivong Boulevard is one of many new towers recently completed or under construction in Cambodia’s capital including OCIC Tower and Gold Tower 41. Hong Youvoin said that since the beginning of 2011, demand for new office space has jumped

In its April edition Marketing magazine, commending Property Report South East Asia, said: “The monthly print and online publication has been voted the top property magazine by advertisers, and the second best publication to reach property buyers, along with insurance and investment buyers and middle income earners.” Terry Blackburn, Chief Executive Officer of Ensign Media, said: “This award underlines the position of Property Report South East Asia as the region’s leading luxury property magazine, and as a must-use brand for developers and agents who want to reach property buyers and investors.” Ensign Media’s www.property-report. com website is the online companion to the Property Report South East Asia magazine.

along with new investments from Vietnam, France, and South Korea. “We have already rented 40 percent [of the building to] international firms in banking, auditing consulting, airlines, embassies and especially real estate companies,” he said. Rents in the tower will average US$19 per square metre he said, adding that he hopes the tower’s occupancy rate will reach between 50 percent to 60 percent by 2012. Sung Bonna, President and CEO of Bonna Realty Group and President of the National Valuers’ Association of Cambodia, said he believed the tower was situated in the right location to attract clients.

“In this year, we have noted that occupancy rates increased because a lot of investors came to the Kingdom,” he said. He claimed that Cambodia’s property market in the first quarter of this year has been better than the same period last year, adding that there have been double the transactions since January 1.

Occupancy is at about 75 percent at the 14 Grade B buildings in the capital, according to the National Valuers’ Association. Sung Bonna said the price of rental office space in Grade A offices is between US$20 and US$30 per square metre, while Grade B has fetched between US$10 and US$20 per square metre. There are nearly 40,000 square metres of Grade A office space in Phnom Penh, Sung Bonna said, with another 30,000 square metres expected to come on line in the next three months. Now there are 10,000 square metres of Grade B office space in the city. Sung Bonna also said that when Cambodia’s stock exchange opens this summer it will boost demand for office space and, as a result, lift prices.

“Many investors will come to our country to invest here,” he said.

alaysia’s Mah Sing Group Bhd is optimistic of achieving its RM2 billion (US$667 million) sales target by the end of 2011, with sales RM738 million (US$246.3 million) in the first 15 weeks of this year and demand remaining strong. “We’re confident of meeting our target as the confluence of strong fundamentals and our branding, location, concept and products will make 2011 another good year,” said group

managing director and chief executive Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum as quoted by The Business Times. Last year, the group sold RM1.5 billion (US$500 million) worth of properties. Leong said the Economic Transformation Programme has proven to be catalytic and the Greater KL high impact project, like the construction of the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) was set to generate excitement for the property market. “Seven of our projects with gross development value of RM2.25 billion (US$751 million) should benefit from the MRT development. This is 37 per cent of our unbilled sales of RM12 billion (US$4 billion),” he said. With market capitalisation of more than RM2.2 billion (US$734 million), Mah Sing is the sixth largest property developer in the country. A favourite among investors, Mah Sing since 2006, has been paying out at least 40 per cent of its profits as dividends.

Kuala Lumpur skyline to be changed by planned Tradewinds Centre

A

new “multi-billion ringgit” development called the Tradewinds Centre in Kuala Lumpur will be built by 2016, the Business Times has reported. According to the GDP Architects’ website, the project will involve a total gross area of 3.17 million sq m and on a plot ratio of 10.55. The web page and the artist’s impression were, however, removed from the website late yesterday evening. “The Tradewinds Centre explicitly seeks to establish itself in the international arena of great financial developments. The Tradewinds project offers Kuala Lumpur many exciting features that will enhance and expand the city’s growing modern qualities, similar to Rockefeller Center for New York or Roppongi Hills for Tokyo,” the website said. The development, to be carried out by Tradewinds Corp Bhd, will encompass four towers and be built on a 2.79ha plot along Jalan Sultan Ismail. These towers will each have 60 storeys, 55 storeys, 14 storeys and eight storeys. They will house offices, serviced apartments, retail and a medical centre. GDP added that the development will be vibrant and active at all times through its complex programme mix. “Its signature profile will greatly contribute to the overall composition of the city skyline. Its large scale and memorable public plaza unites neighbourhoods in the urban fabric, creating a system of pedestrian friendly movement that is

integrated with the public transportation system,” GDP added. The architecture of the buildings establishes connections with traditions of Kuala Lumpur’s rich history by linking Islamic pattern making to its modern exterior design. Its sustainable strategy will make the building a leader in environmental design, it said. The entire centre will have a total of 2,888 carparks.

Hong Kong Yuan-denominated REIT raises $1.6 billion in initial public offering

T

he first ever yuan-denominated REIT – Hui Xian Real Estate Investment Trust from Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing – has raised 10.48 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) in its initial public offering, The Wall Street Journal Market Watch has reported. The Beijing-focused REIT sold 2 billion shares for 5.24 yuan each for a total 40 per cent stake in the company. The final pricing was at the bottom of the range of 5.24 yuan to 5.58 yuan supplied in marketing materials. Bankers involved with the deal told Dow Jones Newswires that there was interest in the offer

from hedge funds, long-only funds, and special investment funds that cater to rich individuals. The offer was popular among the general public, as investor orders for the stock exceeded the 20% of the total shares allocated to the retail side, according to reports. The REIT’s main asset is the Oriental Plaza, a retail, office, hotel and residential complex located in Beijing. The deal has attracted big headlines in Hong Kong’s financial press in recent weeks, mainly because of its novelty in denominating the offer in the Chinese currency.

Minachai Srichanya to lead the way for Thailand Golf Course Superintendants

anyan Golf Club was recently represented at the annual ‘Sustainable Turf-grass Management in Asia 2011” seminar in Pattaya by the course Superintendant, Khun Minachai Srichanya and Director of Operations, Stuart Daly. The seminar is now in its 3rd year and welcomed over 200 delegates from 12 countries. It is led by the Thailand Golf Course Superintendants Association and the supported by The R&A and the Asian Turfgrass Centre in Bangkok.

This year’s seminar focused its attention on subjects which are close to the hearts of every Superintendant. 1. What are the differences in methods to sustainably maintain different Turf grasses? Each variety of turf grass (Bermuda-grass, Paspalums, and Zoysia grasses) each require a different set of maintenance practices to manage the health and playability of the grass. There were several presentations on the suitability of different types of turf grass for specific uses. Dr. Micah Woods from the Asian Turfgrass Centre has long been a supporter of Zoysia grasses for use on golf courses. “It is a native grass to the region, and require much less water & fertilizer nutrients than other popular turf grass. It is very resistant to

disease and would be my choice of turf grass if I was to build my own golf course” 2. What are the most sustainable methods to control weed pressure on golf courses? Several discussion and examples were shown to prove the different effects of weed control measures. Test plots were shown as several of Pattaya‘s golf courses and the superintendant of each gave their own opinions. The use of salt as a herbicide was tested & discussed, as were several new chemical products. The Royal & Ancient were represented at the Seminar by Mr. Phillip Russell, Assistant to the Director to the Golf Course management (R&A). Mr. Russell spoke about the need for golfer worldwide to understand the importance of sustainable management of turf grass. He reminded delegates that the use of water in being increasingly measured by governments & municipalities all over the world. Golf Course Superintendants must learn to use less water & chemical treatments over the coming years. Mr. Russell presented Banyan Golf Club as a case-study for the R&A in it’s water management program and the reduced use of chemical fertilizers year on year. This is mainly due to the use of Zoysia grass on fairways & rough. The case study is due to be available for public viewing via the R&A’s website in the coming months. The R&A define Sustainability as follows; “Optimizing the playing quality of the golf course in harmony with the conservation of its natural environment under economically sound and socially

few weeks. We actively encourage Junior Golf development here at Banyan Golf Club and so therefore take an interest in local golfers who display the passion to progress to the professional level over the coming years”. Sheena plans to use the current school holidays to practice as much as possible and participate on several more tournaments to sharpen & develop here skills. Keep an eye on this girl. There is more success to follow!

H

ua Hin resident Khun Sheena McKenzie (14 years) has been very busy over the past few month participating in several national & regions amateur golf tournaments. She most recently has been taking part in the qualifying stages for selection to the Thai National Junior team under the eye of National coach Gerry Norquist. Over 4 rounds played at Lamlukka Golf Club, Sheena returned scores of 72-75-73-72 to finish 3rd in the overall standings. Earlier in March, Sheena suceeeded to win True Vision Junior Golf tournament at The Pine Golf Course, Bangkok, with 3 days scores of 76-75-72 Sheena is supported locally by Banyan Golf Club who keep an eye on her development in the game of golf. Stuart Daly commented “it is great to see Sheena doing so well over the past

responsible management” On the closing day of the seminar, the new committee of the Thailand Golf Course Superintendant Association (TGCSA) was presented. Khun Minachai Srichanya from Banyan Golf Club has been voted onto the committee to assist with the education & development of the other Superintendants in the country. Khun Minachai will use Banyan Golf Club as an example of how to sustainably manage turf grass while provide maximum playing conditions at all times. He intends to offer support to other Superintendants as they face issues with their respective courses.

Stuart Daly, Director of Operations at Banyan Golf Club commented, ‘we are very pleased that Khun Minachai has been recognized by his peers within the industry. Turfgrass management is an integral part of the success or failure of any golf course. We will certainly welcome the visits from other Superintendants from Thailand as Khun Minachai will be leading the educational program for the TGCSA”. “We sent Khun Minachai to Sentosa last year to be involved in the course preparations for the Barclay’s Singapore Open. Sentosa use the same selection of turf grass as we have here at Banyan. He is becoming recognized as one of Thailand’s leading Superintendents” “The correct choice of turf grass for a specific project or site is a key decision in golf course design, construction & maintenance”, comments Khun Minachai. “We see several golf courses under tremendous weed & native grass pressure simply due to poor decisions at early stages. Thailand’s Golf Course Superintendants need to understand the maintenance & nutrient requirements of their specific turf-grass in order to present better playing conditions for members & visitors”. Minachai added, “the TGCSA hope to grow the quality of all of Thailand’s golf course conditions. But we must do that in a sustainable manner.”

Manager´s Destiny F

By Jack Mairoo

arewell! But let’s not be dismayed at goodbyes, a farewell is necessary before you can meet again, and meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends! When you look at our lives, as an expat or a person working in the hospitality industry, you notice the number of times you have been welcomed and the number of times you have been saying farewell, very unusual don’t you think? People come and people go, to some it is hard to say farewell to, to others you are happy to see them leave… I hate cliché and I particularly dislike to see people I appreciate leaving, but all good things must come to an end, this is life I guess….! What I hate the most in our line of business, is that we are always running out of time to socialize and get to know each other more, jobs above all, the spirit of hospitality, professional consciousness, service and guest mind, you name it….. A lot of excuses, that often, we use excessively as a hotelier. A Hotelier must be a diplomat, a democrat, an autocrat, an acrobat, a aristocrat and a doormat. He must have the facility to entertain, Kings and Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers, princes of industry, movie stars or stars, pickpockets, gamblers, investigators, bookmakers, pirates, philanthropists, popsies and prudes. He must be on both sides of the political fence, and be able to jump that fence. He should be, or have been, a footballer, golfer, bowler, tennis player, cricketer, darts player, sailor, pigeon fancier, motor racer and linguist, as well as have a good knowledge of any other sport involving dice, cards, horse racing and billiards…… etcetera! In conclusion a hotelier must be perfect, is not a job any longer, it’s an attitude or a being, one, that you are born with. In conclusion a hotelier must be perfect, it is not a job any longer but an attitude or a being; one, that you are born with and must be accepted by your partner in life! Farewell! But let’s not be dismayed at goodbyes, a farewell is necessary before you can meet again, and meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends!

lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked : ‘How heavy is this glass of water?’ Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.’ He continued, ‘And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water : “You have to put it down for a

t doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain! I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it, or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human. It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not

betray your own soul; If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it’s not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!” It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children. It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back. It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Meditation as Mind Medication Sukkasart Health Institute

M

ore and more people are turning to alternative or non-traditional methods to treat medical conditions. One such technique, meditation, is gaining popularity as a legitimate medical therapy. Meditation is the practice of focusing your attention and mind on something that makes you feel calm and relaxed and gives you clarity about your life, says medical contributor Dr. Mallika Marshall. For thousands of years, people have recognized that meditation has wonderful health and psychological benefits. The medical community is becoming much more accepting of meditation as a legitimate treatment for many different medical problems, such as anxiety, stress and depression. It’s being used treat all kinds of chronic pain. People are using meditation to try to quit smoking. It’s also being used for alcohol and drug addiction. And the National Institutes of Health is even recommending meditation for high blood pressure. Studies have show also that it can help women who suffer from PMS, menopausal hot flashes and even infertility. Meditation helps your enter a relaxation state that can lower your heart rate, your blood pressure, slow down your breathing and relax your muscles. Some experts have compared it to a “reset button” for your body. Meditation is something that most people can safely try on their own, though there are many techniques out there -so you may want to read up on different ways to meditate. Here is a basic meditation technique to get started: Sit or lie in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Simply focus on your breathing, focusing all your attention on sensation of air moving in and out of your body. Then starts smiling down to your heart, sending a

positive energy to your heart, allow your heart to open and relax and letting go of the worries you may have. Do this for about 20 minutes every day if you can. In the beginning, your mind will wander and come back to the present, but don’t despair, simply refocus your mind and try again. By practicing this, it will allow your mind to rest and dealing with unfinished business, and noticing your emotion baggage. Since meditation involves sitting quietly for a period of time and simply breathing, it may be difficult for people who have breathing problems or can’t stay still. People with certain conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or psychosis may not be able to concentrate. And don’t forget traditional medical treatments in favor or just doing meditation. It should be used to complement any other treatments your doctor has recommended for you. Dehydration in The Tropics

e-hydration as the result of having Diarrhea accompanied by vomiting. Whenever I meet newcomers to Asia, I warn them that in the first few months here they may experience attacks of Diarrhea. It is not that the microbes in Thailand are worse than those in your home countries; they are just different and you are not used to them. Our first patient had this problem and a second european lady was admitted two days later with the same problem It is puzzling why sometimes six people will go out to dinner, eat the same food, two get ill, two feel a little uncomfortable and two are not affected at all. It is all due to one persons gut and immune system being able to deal with the microbe and others are not so lucky. It may be difficult to believe but Diarrhea is a good thing. It is the body getting rid of material that it finds to be unacceptable. That is why the general rule is that if you have this problem, wait for twenty-four hours before starting treatment. In most cases in that time the number of visits to the toilet will be reduced to a reasonable number. The young lady that we admitted had another problem; she was also vomiting. When you have diarrhea you need to replace all the fluid lost by drinking lots of fluids. But, if you are vomiting it is impossible for you to replace the fluids and you will rapidly become de-hydrated. We have to give fluids intra-venously through a drip. Preventing these attacks requires a few sensible precautions. Microbes are all around us, in fact we have billions living inside our digestive system, but there are certain ones that can contaminate food and cause problems. Health authorities have stringent standards for infection control and restaurants know that if outbreaks occur frequently to their customers then soon their business will be in trouble. Microbes are killed by exposure to high heat for several minutes and eating undercooked food is not a good policy. Be careful what you eat on the street. I hate looking at half-cooked food that is then placed back on the grill to warm it up and would not eat such food. For eating at home, select food carefully from well-maintained stores with good

My therapist, Khun Da took over from Miss Pim and suggested an oily, sandy body scrub to remove old skin residue and cells. I overcame a 30 minute sandpapering of my luxury body but felt like reborn. The Therapist actually did rub me gentle and the oil generated new life into my old bones. I could have taken up a match with Roger Federer at that moment. Not that it would last very long but nevertheless. After a hot shower just to remove the quartz, I had a full body massage with a healing and invigorating oil. I promptly must have slumbered or fallen asleep as I was waked up my soother with a “finished” sir and a lost match to Roger Federer. A great experience and a great massage, away from road sounds and barking dogs.

refrigeration systems. Wash the food before you put it away. Chicken is a particular worry. Wash each piece under running water for at least a minute. When you are cooking it makes sure it is cooked through to the bone. Microwave is very good at killing microbes. If you plan to barbecue chicken, cook it in the microwave for two minutes before putting it on the grill. Counters should be cleaned immediately having been exposed to uncooked food. Commercial disinfectants are available, but a teaspoon of bleach in a litre of water is more effective. If you should get an attack of diarrhea, start to rehydrate immediately, in our warm climate you can get dehydrated very quickly. You body looses water and many minerals particularly Sodium and Potassium. Orange juice contains plenty of Potassium. Take half a glass of orange juice, fill it up with water and add about three pinches of salt; drink this after every bowel movement. There are some medications that work only in the gut to solidify the motions. Kao-Pectate is one and Smecta another. They look like cement, taste like cement and set like cement. If you have a fever, are vomiting, the diarrhea contains blood or continues for over twenty–four hours come to our Emergency room. With small children, twenty-four hours is too long to wait as they can get dehydrated very quickly. Both of our young patients recovered vey quickly and were sent home after twenty-four hours in the hospital. It took several litres of fluid to re-hydrate them; three or four litres are often needed. We took cultures from their motions and they each had microbes that needed antibiotic treatment. This they were able to take by moth as the vomiting settled with some anti-nauseants and the intra-venous fluids. The Dutch, Swedish and a British group have tours of our hospital arranged and I will be happy to entertain any other group of interested residents. FAQ about Health & Wellness

Q

: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it… Don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake? A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you

get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up, and if you end up in alcohol rehab, you’re doing a great job! Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain…Good! Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you? A: You’re not listening…. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

amma Mia, Signore Claudio´s Italian Restaurant is among the very few that were established in Hua Hin 20 years ago. Located just in front of Hua Hin Port with a third floor Terrace overlooking most of the other buildings and a perfect incomparable view to the sea, Mamma Mia offers just a little more than just gourmet Italian Food. The menue ranges from simple starters and Pizzas to delightfully composed culinary delights from the European Mediterranean coastal and land areas of Italia! Claudio started off in 1986, arriving to Thailand as an innocent young man, in Pattaya. The restaurant went well but the coast needed to be defended with others which made him move to Cha Am after 2 years. Directly on the beach, he realized that Cha Am was not the right place for him and he moved to Hua Hin where Mamma Mia has been ever since. From the centre of Town, Mamma Mia moved to Naresdamri Road at the Hua Hin port. The restaurant now covers three stories of which the top floor is more like an after dawn romantic setting with a wet bar and splendid views of Naresdamri road, the port and the Gulf of Siam.

Mamma Mia´s Chef has been with Khun Claudio for 17 years. His prime waitress for 22 years! All his other staff have been with him for at least 8 – 10 years! The main dish was a pan fried Pomfret fish filet with a Safran cream sauce, green Asparagus on boiled sliced potatoes. Needless to tell you that this was the crown on our lunch setting. The Safran Cream sauce was just dreamy on the fresh fish. very popular Thai owner Western & Thai Congratulations Kuhn Claudio..an excellent Food Restaurant in the soi 56 area. lunch. comprehensive selection of Thai food adapted to Farang taste buds. The portions are very goods and plentiful, the food quality good. Thai Chef Gai (Papa), his wife Khun Arun and their family have lived in Sweden where Chef Gai learned to make western dishes as well.

I was welcomed with a Colutta Prosecco from Friuli which is located in the North Eastern of Ital close to the Austrian and Yugo border. The Prosecco would last us all through the five course meal starting off with a snack starter appetizer of Chicken Liver Mousse and Bruschetta, an Italian version of Salsa, chopped tomatoes with a assortment of breads and sticks. A thinly sliced marinated Swordfish and Tuna Carpaccio is also considered as an appetizer in Italy. Both deep sea fish were deliciously marinated and a perfect entrée to the upcoming Primo Piatto composed of a Spaghetti Vongole with Bottarga , dried fish eggs and a touch of Chili.

A special Easter fruit cake from Colomba, the famous white dove, imported from Italy and an espresso rounded up the smile on my face. Rommai - Thai – Western & Italian restaurant

By Piyanit

I

’m sure many foreigners in the neighborhood know Rommai better than myself. It opened its door about three years ago. The restaurant has already bonded with quite some Thai and foreign regulars. Rommai is conveniently located in NongKae subdistrict, opposite the famous Cicada Market. From my own experience the food is of a high standard and many Thai dishes taste very good. At Rommai you can choose Thai dishes with steamed rice or choose an easy meal (one dish meal as known to Thais) and also popular western and Italian food. Rommai uses good quality fresh ingredients for each any every dish they serve, Thai and International food alike. Prices range from 40-220 baht. Alcoholic drinks are also available. The owner, a middle aged man speaks good English, so it’s quite convenient for foreign customers.

Steaks and Chops are Charcoaled Grilled and fresh beer and wines are ready to be served. A very friendly atmosphere. A great place to enjoy a very affordable meal! Prices are low and in comparison to the portions and taste, best value for money! Check out is a must! Soi 56, over the Klong about 700 meters uproad and on the left at number 27/55 – Cant find it? Call: 089 035 8904 – they speak English.

Sitting here one Monday afternoon for lunch, I can tell from the numbers of its guests and from the mouthwatering dished arriving at my own table that this restaurant is another successful one. If you arrive when the place is packed the food, it might take quite some time before you can get a table. Be patient, it’s absolutely worth the wait. Rommai is open daily from 11.00-22.00 Contact: 081 944 5256

“Together Bakery & Café”

By Piyanit

C

raving for some exceptional sweets at 6 pm after long working hours, my friend and I were heading to the agreed destination to fulfill our craving. But that small café-like shop close to the railway station was closed, on the day we want to go there the most! Moving on to plan B, we decided to look for another bakery & café to get ourselves a piece of cake - COCONUT cake! Another friend

Wowww….” Our plan B didn’t disappoint us after all. The decoration in the bakery and café, I can’t really think of any other words to describe it , except “very cute”. You can see all the bottles of drinks, boxes of cookies, small décor, paintings which are also for sale. It’s perfect for such a lazy evening when you don’t feel like planning any other activities. As we were sitting there, unhurriedly enjoying our cake, there were many customers walking in to ask for coconut cake and got disappointed just like we did. This really urged me to come back some time soon for the coconut cake. Other alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine and cocktails are also available. Prices are very reasonable for such a good taste, quality and portions. I recommend Together Bakery & Café whenever you crave for coffee, cake, or cocktails. Together Bakery & café - 72/3 Dechanuchit recommended that there’s a good one right at the Road (Night Market upper zone) Night Market. It shouldn’t be difficult to find. Open: 08.30 – 23.00 -. Tel. 032 531 059 We finally found the “Together- Bakery & Café”. Coming here for a piece of coconut cake, we were disappointed for the 2nd time when we learned that, there was no more left. We had to choose something else out of different flavors of cake, pie, fudge, and many other bakery products. I stood in front of the glass shelf for a while before pointing at the “Rich Butter Raspberry cake”. I asked for the house recommendation for a drink. They gave me a few names and I ended up with the “Blueberry Yoghurt”. My friend went for a “Palm fruit cake” and “Banana Smoothie”. I realized later when the items arrived at our table that each of us had ordered the items of a similar color tone and probably, the taste. Yes, a perfect match for each of us! My piece of cake and the blueberry yoghurt turned out surprisingly good. The butter, so rich, as rich as it could be. The raspberry frosting on top has that smooth sweet & sour taste. The blueberry yoghurt is not too sweet and my friend also liked what she ordered very much. There were actually quite a lot of “Hmmmm…. &

SONGKRAN IN CHA-AM

T

his year, Songkran, again, was a very watery festival to much of the delight of tourists and residents of CHA AM. Songkran Festival is the traditional Thai New Year celebrated on April 13th. Families and friends gather to celebrate by visiting temples, sprinkling water on Buddha images in reverence, and sprinkling water on each other’s hands as an act of wishing good luck. In recent years, the tradition of sprinkling water has been interpreted by youngsters as a great excuse for a water fight, and it is not uncommon to have buckets and containers of water thrown at you by teams of merry makers in the backs of trucks as you make your way down the street - particularly in major tourist areas like Cha Am and Hua Hin. Even the Police is not spared of a good wash up.

Cha Am to have a Sea Port

Thai Government reveal plans for Cha Am T he Ministry of Tourism & Sport is preparing for a budget to build up a port at Saphan Hin in Cha-Am, according to the Royal Coast development plan. The new port will link the tourist destinations of the Gulf of Siam. The meeting was held on April 21 2011 and the budget approved for the fiscal year 2012. The new port is expected to persuade more tourists from the east coast to travel to Cha-Am and Hua Hin. A high speed Catamaran will connect Cha Am with Pattaya on the other side of the Gulf and in future other ports and Bangkok. In order to facilitate Tourist Cruise ships to visit Cha Am, facilities have to be provided for the ships to come closer to shore as the Gulf coast is rather shallow. Efforts to exploit the Cha Am – Hua Hin coast and make these top tourist destinations more popular and easier accessible, will also require investment from private sectors. HHT receive news about large projects just North of Cha Am whilst rumors and plans for a deep sea harbour close to Hua Hin cursor. Cha Am tourism has increased importantly in the last two years as the Bangkok highway was considerably improved and Hospitality increased their lodging capacities.

New Chairman for Hua Hin - Cha-Am Tourism Business Assoc D

r. Rungrot Sileungsawad has recently won an unanimous vote for the position of a new chairman of the Hua Hin-Cha-Am Toursim Business Association. The selection of the new chairman took place in the end of March at the general annual meeting for the Association because the two-year term for Mr. Manu Tharnpipitchai, the former chairman, already finished. Having learned that Dr. Rungrot is the new chairman, Mr. Manu told him about his 3 principles for social work: dedication, giving and patience since the chairman of the Hua Hin-ChaAm Tourism Business Association has to work hard under pressure. Sometimes, he may need to pay for a meeting and travel at his own expense. “Those who follow these golden guidelines will be blessed,” guaranteed Mr. Manu as he said that, throughout his chairman term, his contribution

greatly accounted for the prosperity of the Association. The new chairman, accepting that the job will be a tough one, talked about settling down at the office of the Association at the Hua Hin Grand Hotel. Since there are only 60 members registered, the sub-committee has to encourage more hotel, guesthouse and condominium entrepreneurs to become new members so that capacity of the private sectors on tourism business is enhanced. Dr. Rungrot added that networking was also crucial as it help much on coordination with local governmental organizations to provincial offices and the government. So, during his two-year term of chairmanship, networking should be laid out for the next 5 or 10 years, not only throughout the time he is taking the post. This is because people from all walks of life involved in tourism business can reap its benefit. If mobilization is carried out

under cooperation between the Association and local people, all tourism entrepreneurs can earn more. According to the new chairman of the Hua HinCha-Am Toursim Business Association, both Hua Hin and Cha-Am boast many ecological, archeological and cultural sites apart from unique lifestyle and tradition of the local people. This is a good selling point for foreign visitors, especially the European and the Scandinavian who admire diverse culture. Moreover, the two cities have 10 golf courses altogether which need to be used more by golf enthusiasts. The former Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin, Dr. Rungrot Sileungsawad is now a general manager for the Hua Hin Grand Hotel and a special lecturer at the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University (Hua Hin Campus). He is also a senior advisor for many institutions.

Insight English Summer Camp

In

sight English has been providing English lessons to nine local government schools in Cha-am in this April with finacial support from “The Independent Living Foundation” www.ilthailand.vpweb.nl Insight English hosted a summer camp for twenty-seven of the children from these schools, aged eight to ten years old. The children who were chosen to attend the camp were selected because of their keen enthusiasm to learn English and their good participation during their lessons. The camp lasted a total of three days and all activities provided were intended to be educational in some way. Therefore, we had a variety of games which developed English, critical thinking and team building skills. The children arrived at midday on Monday and once unpacked, the first activity began immediately! We began by playing a number of rather daft introduction games in order to encourage the children to feel more comfortable amongst one another and allow us to see their English ability. Once introductions were over, we set the children their first team building task. In teams of four, they had to build a parachute to prevent an egg from breaking when

dropped from a three metre height, using only the materials provided which were: eight straws, a plastic bag and two sheets of newspaper. Looks of stern concentration were seen around the room as they tried to create the best parachute possible; however, in the end, only one team was successful. More games followed before dinner and then the children spent the evening watching a film to help them relax before they all went off to bed. Day two began with a treasure hunt to develop the children’s English ability. For the first twenty minutes of the day, we practised vocabulary such as: beach, bridge, and swimming pool and then the children were sent off with a number of clues including these vocabularies to test how much they remembered. After a good thirty minutes, the first team frantically searched the classroom before finding the treasure, chocolate coins! all of which the children thoroughly enjoyed. After lunch, Before lunch we played a few more activities including; English lessons began with a chorus of moans from the three legged races, water polo and egg and spoon races, children, however, after ten minutes they were all enjoying themselves once again and worked on different topics such as: daily routines, foods, and body parts. The latter allowed the English teachers to teach the children a song, ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ which was instantly a hit and in the children’s heads for the rest of the day. Day three began with more English lessons before a very heated and competitive sand castle competition. There were temples, mountains and castles all created from sand and in the end we had to decide upon three joint winners due to the high standard of creations. This concluded the camp and made it seem as if the last three days had flown by. Insight English intends to run more charitable events and your help and donations are always very welcome and wanted.
