This condo is homely, comfortable, and blessed with fascinating sun rise and sun set oceanic sceneries. Yet it is only 5 minute drive from downtown Hua Hin, including Bluport and Market Village shopping centers. The condo is well-maintained, not furnished, allowing for your own self-styled furniture designs. Given Hua Hin stature as Thailand’s Rivera, this high quality condo is promising in terms of stable, long-term yield, especially at the current price per square meter that is about half the price of equivalent condos in Bangkok and Phuket. This 118 SqM high rise condo is not only a wonderful home but also a far-sighted investment

2 Does anybody know what is supposed to be happening along the seafront from the fisherman’s pier to the Hilton?

Hi. In your March edition i read a letter to the editor titled “What will become of the expat community in Thailand?” I would like to give a different view on the subject. There are expats who fully understand and accept the stringenthed requirements. Firstly, expats should never involve themselves in such issue when they are visitors in a (for them) foreign country. Secondly why should Thailand allow foreigners in their country who cannot bring as little as 800.000 baht to the table? There are likely some among these who potentially only can be a burden for Thailand. Kind regards Soren Thyssen Dear Soren Thank you for getting in touch. Yes, you make some valid points. Thailand is absolutely well within its rights to update and more rigorously enforce the visa requirements for foreigners. Some may even say that it is well overdue. And according to the Thai government, there is evidence to suggest that some foreigners in Thailand are becoming a burden, particular those who do not have insurance and are unable to pay state hospital bills. And let’s face it, if someone has not got 800,000 baht in the bank or can show funds of 65,000 baht coming into a Thai bank account each month, then it is no longer financially viable for them to retire in Thailand.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

The fisherman’s pier was rebuilt with support from central government and many buildings were nearing completion. Then they decided to part demolish near complete buildings and the nearly completed and muchneeded toilet block has been treated the same. Now for over 2 years, the site has been an eyesore. Does anybody take any responsibility for creating this and finding a way to sort it out? The area from the pier to the Hilton was supposed to be brought back into public use as the land is public land. Furthermore, one can only assume that the beach which has been swallowed up by decking for restaurants and accommodation must also be made accessible to the public. I can understand the dismay of the businesses who are under threat and I for one would suggest leaving the quaint old buildings on the roadside as they are part of the character of HH. What is behind said the building should be returned to the public - a nice promenade from the Chinese Temple at the Hilton along to the pier would enhance the HH offering. However, what is happening - anything, nothing that is the delay etc. The Thais are easy going but all too often turn a blind eye, or take a back-hander, to wrongdoings such that they end up with people being displaced from places they should never have been allowed to settle in the first place. From the editor: Yes, a nice promenade along that stretch of beach would be fantastic. In fact, with some redevelopment, the whole area could become a real focal point of the town. To answer your question, we spoke with business owners in that area and they too were unsure of the what the future holds for that part of town. We then took the issue to the municipality, and were granted a meeting with the mayor, who was able to clarify the situation to us, full details of which will be in our next issue, so look out for that!

Hua Hin sizzles as Thai summer gets even hotter If you think it feels noticeably warmer this year than in previous Thai summers, you could be onto something. Thailand’s Meteorological Department has confirmed that this year’s hot or summer season is warmer and will continue to be hotter than the same period last year. “It will be about one or two degrees Celsius hotter,” the department’s directorgeneral Phuwieng Prakhammintara told The Nation. In the central and northern provinces of Mae Hong Son, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi, temperatures have already reached 42 degrees Celsius this hot season. In April, Lampang’s Thoen district recorded the hottest temperature in Thailand this year with the mercury hitting to 44.2 degrees Celsius. The temperature has not yet broken the country’s record for hottest day, which was recorded at 44.6 degrees Celsius in

Mae Hong Son province on April 28, 2016. The Meteorological Department said summer storms are forecast nationwide between the end of April and mid-May, which could help to reduce the heat. In Hua Hin, we’ve seen daily average temperatures of around 36 degrees Celsius throughout April. However, according to Accuweather. com, the ‘real feel’ of the temperatures in Hua Hin is actually around 42 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, due to the hotter than usual weather, Thailand’s Meteorological Department has warned people to avoid outdoor activities and make sure they keep hydrated. People have been also urged to be aware of the symptoms heatstroke, which include a high body temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart rate, low blood pressure, anxiety, hallucination, seizure and unconsciousness.

Early life and education

King Maha Vajiralongkorn was born on 28 July 1952 at 17:45 in the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall of the Dusit Palace in Bangkok. When the crown prince was one year old, Somdet Phra Sangkharat Chao Kromma Luang Wachirayanawong, the 13th Supreme Patriarch of Thailand of the Rattankosin Era, gave the child his first name at birth, “Vajiralongkorn Borommachakkrayadisonsanta-tiwong Thewetthamrongsuboriban Aphikhunuprakanmahittaladunladet Phumiphonnaretwarangkun Kittisirisombunsawangkhawat Borommakhattiyaratchakuman. He is the only son, the second of the four children of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. King Vajiralongkorn began his education in 1956, when he entered Kindergarten at the Chitrada School in Dusit Palace. After completing Mathayom 1 (grade seven), he was sent to be educated at independent school in the United Kingdom, first at a prep school, King’s Mead, Seaford, Sussex, and then at Millfield School, in Somerset, where he completed his secondary education in July 1970. His education at Duntroon was divided into two parts, military training by the Australian Army and a bachelor’s degree course under the auspices of the University of New South Wales. He graduated in 1976 as a newly commissioned lieutenant with a liberal arts degree. He had taken up his duties while serving in the Royal Thai Armed Forces, including frequent provincial tours and representing King Bhumibol at a wide variety of official functions and ceremonies before he ascended the throne

On 6 November 1978, the prince was ordained as a monk at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), at age 26. As is traditional for royals, he stayed at Wat Bowonniwet Vihara for 15 days and under the monastic name “Vajiralongkornno”. In 1982 he completed a second bachelor’s degree in law with second-class honours at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University King Vajiralongkorn was proclaimed crown prince on 28 December 1972 at the Anata Samakhom Throne Hall, making him the third crown prince of the Chakri dynasty an excerpt from the royal command to establish the title of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. As stated in the bliss or the royal statutes of the country, when a Royal Prince who is destined to be heir to the throne is mature, the King shall graciously bestow the rank upon him of Somdet Phra Yupharat Mongkutratchakuman. At this present time, all people including citizens of nations all over the world shall accept and acclaim that His Royal Highness Prince Vajiralongkorn shall succeed to the throne of the Kingdom. King Vajiralongkorn was second married with Sujarinee Vivacharawongse, and they were married at a palace ceremony in February 1994, and they have 5 children together. King Vajiralongkorn married a third time on 10 February 2001, to Srirasmi Suwadee, the marriage was not disclosed to the public until early 2005. She gave birth to a son, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, on 29 April 2005 and was then elevated to the rank of princess. Her son was immediately elevated to the rank of prince King Maha Vajiralongkorn has been Thailand’s official monarch for two years, following the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej in the fall of 2016. But his long-awaited coronation has still yet to occur—and a date for the event has finally been announced. The three-day celebration will take place on May 4-6, 2019. Ceremonies will take place on the first two days, with King Maha making a public appearance on the third. The date holds significance for the Thai monarchy, as King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s coronation was on May 5, 1950—a day celebrated annually as a public holiday in Thailand. “His Majesty deems it fit to hold the coronation ceremony per royal traditions for the good fortune of the nation and the kingdom, to be enjoyed by the hopeful people,” That said, King Maha has reportedly already expressed a desire to put his own spin on the ceremony, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said this past June that the new king wanted a “relatively modest” coronation, while still traditional. “I agree to accept the wishes of the late king ... for the benefit of the entire Thai people,” King Maha said when he accepted an invitation from the country’s parliament to succeed his father. “This royal succession highlights a desire for stability and continuity in Thailand.”

6 Meditation Expert & Medical Intuitive: Delphine Supanya Berger

Hua Hin Today is excited to interview Delphine Supanya for her upcoming retreat in from 7-14 July 2019: Travel & Transform in Lefkada, Greece. Tell us about your journey. I started meditation practices at a very young age. I grew up in a family which practiced daily chanting and meditation. This taught me to “check-in with myself” on a physical, emotional and energetic level and has helped me greatly in cultivating a sense of awareness.

The pursuit of the most effective daily practices became even more important when I started to experience chronic pain due to the neurological illness. Meditation became my tool to manage anything that would cause emotional, energetic and physical imbalance or misalignment. My path to becoming a facilitator of transformational experiences started when I emerged on the other side of a near-death experience. This is when everything shifted within me and I used what I now call Inner Voyage Integration, Neuromuscular and Somatic Movement with Yin Yang Nutrition to fully recover from paralysis, reverse years of

chronic disease, eradicate pain from my life, restore my eyesight, and become healthy enough to be able to conceive a child again. All we need to heal lies somewhere within us. Could you describe the therapy modalities you practice? Meditation Through meditation and hypnotherapy, we address specific areas of the human psyche to kick-start the body’s natural ability to self-heal and change the structure of the brain. As practice makes master, taking 60 seconds, at least once a day, to practice the techniques anchors new neurological pathways and within a few weeks we observe major shifts in people’s lives. It is this simple. If we allow it, the body remembers and the changes happen quickly. Inner Voyage Integration Inner Voyage Integration (IVI) is a deep meditation practice. IVI reestablishes communication pathways between the mind, body, and spirit to reactivate the human’s selfhealing capabilities from the inside out. It addresses the physical, psycho-somatic, emotional, and energetic aspects of your being and has been described as “one of the most rapid and accessible approaches to transformation and healing”. Neuromuscular Reboot On the physical side, I also practice Neuromuscular Reboot (NMR), an easy to remember practice that can be applied anytime anywhere and only takes 15 to 30 minutes to practice. NMR is a series of exercises which lay the foundation for a connected, efficient, leaner and stronger physique. What keeps you motivated? It is such a privilege to witness such deep transformations and self-healing. It is the most beautiful experience when someone rediscovers that all they need to lead a healthy life has been residing within them all this time. I have seen hundreds of people in the past two years and look forward to assisting anyone who feels called to transform like I did and like many others are every day. What are you going to cover during at the retreat in Lefkada, Greece? Every morning, we will be practicing morning rituals to detoxify and awaken the body. During class, we will share physical movement practices that will be adapted to each person’s body type and existing conditions to release tension, reorganise thoughts and rebalance emotional states. The delicious and highly nutritious food has been specifically designed to support the practices, transformation

and gentle detoxification on a physical, mental, emotional and energetic level. In the afternoon my co-facilitator, Johnson Chong and I will also host workshops and talks designed to allow you to go deeper into the practices to feel more expanded, to have more energy and to rebalance. To find out more about the retreat and listen to testimonials visit www.exodusretreats.com. Could you share one or two simple but effective tips? Tool 1: Check-in Body Scan Take 60 seconds a day to scan your body from the top of your head all the way down to your toes, notice and acknowledge how you feel on a physical level, on an emotional level and on an energetic level. Whatever it is, I invite you to notice and name those sensations. This will reduce your level of stress, irritation, and anxiety. The best part with this practice is that during those 60 seconds, you meditated. Tool 2: Smile Take another 60 to 180 seconds a day (several times a day if you can) to smile. Make the biggest full-toothed smile you can muster, feel your cheeks extend to almost touch your ears, and feel your eyes move diagonally towards the top of your head. Once you are there keep the smile and breathe. Smiling releases pleasure hormones called endorphins, which are natural painkillers, and antidepressant hormones such as serotonin.

innovation award in the contest of new generation inventions 2018. At present, students have helped to produce 80 Durian ripeness pens, which are handmade but not yet sold in the market because it is in the process of applying for a patent; which is a long procedure and it will also register the rights with the Department of Intellectual Property. The media in China and Malaysia have written and published information about the product demonstrating great interest. When patents and registration is completed, the price will be set at 3,900 baht per piece and will be sold only for those who pre-order. It is believed however that when sold in the market, there may be merchants copying the product to sell at a cheaper price because the internal mechanisms are not complicated. The product, a hypodermic syringe, pierces the durian and is able to record the results immediately. The device will determine the scale of durian ripeness over 3 levels: red means raw durian, yellow means half-ripe and green ripe durian. All testing has demonstrated 100 percent accuracy.

Remembrance of Pone Kingphet

On April 16th, every year, the Hua Hin Municipality organises a ceremony to commemorate Phon King Phet, which this year led by Mr. Nopporn Wutthikun and members of the municipality, along with relevant agencies, to attend the ceremony at the park Pone Kingpetch. For Pone Kingpetch or Mana Seedokbuab, nicknamed “Klae”, is a native of Hua Hin, he was born on February 12, 1935, and he had a passion for sports since his childhood, his sport is Thai boxing which is a very famous sport worldwide, it’s the true Thai mix martial arts culture that has been around for centuries. He has been training ever since he was a young child at a small boxing camp in Hua Hin. From his great boxing performance, everyone knew he was a gifted fighter with a great future so he got a great opportunity to move in to the big city to start a real life career out of boxing. He went to Bangkok to fight his way through, which enabled him to improve his boxing skills and gain great experiences really quickly, and he was able to win the flyweight champion of the Ratchadamnoen boxing Stadium, which is considered the biggest boxing Stadium that combines all the best boxers in Thailand where the best talents are found. With an amazing fierce boxing style and spectacular footwork that was just a work of art; therefore the boxing camp gave him the opportunity to participate in not only his Thai traditional boxing but also International-style boxing, in which he was able to win the Filipino boxer name “Danny Kit” in flyweight championship of the Far East Boxing Association (OPBF). Thailand’s first boxer to win a world title belt was Pone Kingpetch who became flyweight champion of the world on April

16, 1960 when he defeated Argentinian legend Pascual Perez at Lumpini Stadium in Bangkok in front of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Therefore, the Sports Reporters Association of Thailand has determined that every 16 April of each year is the “The Best Athlete Day” to give out awards to Thai athletes who make a reputation for the country. On this day every year for the remembrance of the purists boxer Thailand has ever produced. 10 Two killed, 20 injured after fire breaks out at Bangkok shopping mall

At least two people died and 20 were injured when fire broke out earlier this month at a shopping centre in Bangkok, forcing some people to jump from the burning building. The Central World Complex, which includes a shopping mall, offices, and a hotel, was evacuated, said operator Central Pattana. Among the 20 victims who suffered injuries, mostly from smoke inhalation, six were male and 14 were female. Six were later released, while 14 needed to stay in hospital for further treatment. Local media showed video of one person jumping from a smoked-filled window to escape the fire. “I saw smoke coming out from the building and two people jumped,” Thanusit Kidtham, an eyewitness, told Reuters. The blaze started in the parking garage of the complex, police said. The fire came in an area popular with

tourists, just days before the Songkran holiday on April 13 to 15. Meanwhile, Central Pattana, the company which operates the mall, said responded to comments that fire alarms did not ring during the incident. The company said that the mall applied a sectional alarm system. This is intended to prevent unnecessary panic if all the mall’s alarms are ringing at the same time, and could lead to accidents during evacuation. On the day of the fire, the alarm at B2 floor and eighth floor rang, the company said, adding that the mall has smoke detection devices and evacuation situation assessment in place The company said the mall immediately announced that people should leave the premises and security guards, who had been trained in regular drills, were at designated points to assist evacuation.

Maya Bay to remain closed “indefinitely”

People hoping to visit famous Maya Bay are going to have to wait a while longer to take in its stunning white shores and towering limestone cliffs. The popular day-trip destination which has been closed to the public since last year to allow coral restoration and beach recovery, will remain closed indefinitely, the head of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Woraphot Lomlim, has confirmed. Following its closure in June 2018, Woraphot said that nature is now slowly rehabilitating itself, citing the return of reef sharks and ghost crabs to the bay, while some 23,000 pieces of coral are also growing once more. Located in the Phi Phi islands between Krabi and Phuket, Maya Bay is home to some of the most spectacular and idyllic natural scenery in Thailand. After Maya Bay was made famous by the 2000 Hollywood film “The Beach” HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

starring Leonardo Di Caprio, it has been a must see destination for tourists visiting Thailand. At its peak it was estimated that 5,000 tourists per day visited the beach, while 200 boats per day would anchor in the bay. Its popularity with tourists resulted in catastrophic and long term damage to the surrounding natural environment, with officials claiming up to 80 percent of the coral in the bay had been destroyed prior to it being closed to tourists. Despite the positive news of wildlife and coral returning to the bay, officials have now said it is likely Maya Bay will remain closed for at least the next 4 to 5 years. Today, tourists wanting to visit Maya Bay are only permitted to go within 300 metres of the island. A special exclusion zone allows them to take photos of the bay and the surrounding area but they are unable to set foot on the beach itself.

Thai king awards Aussie doctors for Tham Luang cave rescue

Two Australian cave divers who were instrumental in the rescue last year of 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave received, on Apr 19, a royal honour from King Maha Vajiralongkorn in a ceremony in Bangkok. The “Wild Boars” soccer team, aged between 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old coach became trapped on Jun 23 while exploring the cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai when a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels. A 17-day effort to rescue them gripped the world with experts from various countries volunteering to help. Richard Harris and Craig Challen were members of the main rescue team, made up of 13 foreign divers and five Thai navy divers, that brought the boys and their coach out to safety. They received the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn at Bangkok’s Government House before meeting Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on their first trip back to Thailand since the rescue. Harris, a physician specializing in anaesthesia, was responsible for sedating the boys before they were brought out

one-by-one on a rescue stretcher through flooded tunnels. The pair were, in January, named Australians of the Year, one of Australia’s highest honours. King Vajiralongkorn has conferred various honours on 187 people in connection with the rescue, 113 of them foreigners including Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk, who were involved in the effort, according to the Royal Gazette last March. A former Thai navy diver died during the rescue.

386 killed during ‘Seven Dangerous Days’, huge surge in drunk driving 386 people were killed during the so called ‘Seven Dangerous Days’ during the Songkran holidays from April 11 to 17. The number of fatalities this year marked a slight decrease (down 7.7%) compared to the same period last year, according to the Road Safety Directing Centre. Udon Thani and Lopburi recorded the most deaths, with 15 each, while Chiang Mai and Nakhon Si Thammarat had the highest number of accidents at 128 each. Some areas such as Krabi, Sukothai and Phangnga did not report any fatalities. During the seven day period, a total of 3,338 accidents were reported, (down 10% from last year) resulting in 3,442 people injured. However, despite the decrease in accidents and fatalities, the number of people found to be driving under the influence of alcohol soared to 12,192, with Bangkok having the highest number of inebriated drivers at 727. According to Probation Department chief Prasarn Mahaleetrakul drunk driving accounted for 97 per cent of the 12,597

traffic law violations during the period, while 386 were cases of driving under the influence of drugs and 19 were related to reckless driving. In one day alone - Wednesday 17 April - there were 55,805 incidents of people caught riding motorbikes without wearing helmets and 48,183 incidents of drivers failing to present a driving licence. A total of 480 people found to be drunk driving were ordered to wear electronic tracking bracelets and were not permitted to leave their homes between 10pm and 4am for between 7 and 15 days.

Thai govt plans Bt20 bn stimulus to boost slowing economy Thailand will introduce economic measures worth about 20 billion baht ($629.52 million) to spur its slowing economy, the finance minister has announced.

The measures will be aimed at boosting consumption, tourism and helping low-income earners, Apisak Tantivorawong told reporters. Thailand’s economic growth is expected to slow to about 3 percent in the first and second quarters of the year, Apisak said, cooling from 3.7 percent in the last quarter of 2018. Official first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) will be released on May 21. Thailand’s trade-dependent economy has been affected by slowing global demand, while the country is waiting for the next government to be formed after the March 24 general election.

11 TAT relaunches “Thailand Travel Shield” insurance cover for foreign tourists

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently announced it will relaunch its “Thailand Travel Shield” project to provide online travel insurance for foreign tourists. The insurance coverage, which was first launched in 2014, is backed by three of Thailand’s leading insurance companies and offers coverage from as little as 400 baht. Available in English and Chinese, the platform allows several payment methods including credit card, debit card, Union Pay and AliPay, with the insurance policy being sent instantly to the insured via email. Visitors availing of the Thailand Travel Shield insurance scheme will be covered once they pass through the immigration until they leave the kingdom. In case of emergency, they can take advantage of the 24-hour emergency assistance by Allianz Global Assistance with staff who are able to speak 40 languages plus access to more than 300 hospitals across Thailand. These travel insurance policies provide instant coverage up to the value of one million Baht for the packages starting at 400 Baht for 1-7 days, and up to the value of two million Baht for the packages starting at 950 Baht. The period of coverage ranges

Immigration chief ‘Big Joke’ suddenly shunted from job, transferred to civil service

up to 60 days, but it can also cover visitors making annual trips to Thailand. Travellers planning a trip to Thailand can continue to buy the Thailand Travel Shield’s insurance coverage online at http:// thailandtravelshield.tourismthailand.org/. Thailand Travel Shield is not available to foreigners who live in Thailand permanently. The news comes after Thai officials last month revealed that uninsured foreigners in Thailand failed to pay a combined total of THB 300 million in medical bills after receiving treatment in state hospitals. The problem, which officials say mostly affects “tourist cities” prompted the Health Service Support Department to announce the launch new claim centres which would help officials track down foreigners who had not paid medical bills. A public-health official, who spoke to The Nation on the condition of anonymity, said foreigners often run out of cash during long stays in Thailand. “And when they need medical services, they simply don’t pay.” In some cases, the official said, foreigners have been hospitalised for months without paying a single baht.

Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, Thailand’s highest-profile policeman, has been abruptly transferred from his role as head of the Immigration Bureau. A rising star of the police force, Big Joke was widely tipped to be a future police commissioner. However, his career now appears to be over, having been removed from all police posts and transferred to a civilian position within Thailand’s civil service - a huge downgrade from his previous roles in the police force. Appointed to the top job in the Immigration Bureau less than one year ago, Big Joke has been rarely out of the headlines and featured almost daily in news bulletins in Thailand. Having amassed a large following across social media, he oversaw the aggressive pursuit of foreign criminals and those residing in Thailand illegally, as well as visa overstayers and so called ‘romance scammers’ and call centre gangs.

He became synonymous with the “Good Guys In, Bad Guys Out” slogan of the Immigration Bureau, as well as elaborate presentations to the media featuring large posters bearing successful cases. He also rolled out the “No Tips” policy designed to crackdown on corruption within the Immigration Bureau. The policy saw stickers and posters displayed at Immigration offices and border checkpoints nationwide informing foreigners not to offer ‘tips’ to officers. Announced in the Royal Gazette, it has been confirmed that Big Joke will be transferred to the position of a civil servant in the Prime Minister’s Office, effective immediately. It is understood the move is reserved for officials under ongoing investigation. However, at the time of going to press no reasons have been made public for the sudden transfer of Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn and his removal from his role of head of the Immigration Bureau.

The population of monkeys fast growth

Dr. Saroj Chanlad, Head of Animal Health Thailand, Livestock Office Prachuap Khiri Khan province disclosed, from an academic survey, that there are currently over 5,000 Macaques monkey in Prachuap Province: Khao Takiab, Suan Ling community and Khao Chong Krachok area. The Macaques have variety of eating habits from grains and fruits and even anything that they can find edible. The highly concentrated carbohydrate content of their foods makes theses monkeys plentifully healthy, resulting in high sexual desire which has led to a rapid raise in the population of these monkeys. Another contributing factor is the tourist. Tourists love to feed these monkeys which causes the monkeys then to change their eating habits moving them away from their natural diet. The monkeys will wait to be fed by people and tourists. This over population of monkeys is becoming a problem in our city. A monkey sterilization plan has been planned by The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation officials. They plan to patrol and catch the monkeys at their reproductive age for sterilization (April 2019). Hua Hin municipality will pay all expenses. 15 More Thais than ever are ditching cash in favour of digital payments: Visa

Four out of every five Thais tried going cashless in 2018 as confidence in digital payments grew, a dramatic jump from 50 per cent the previous year. The 2018 “Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes” study tracked payment habits and attitudes and explored emerging topics related to payments among 4,000 consumers in eight Southeast Asian countries, including 500 in Thailand, the Nation reported. The study showed that Thai consumers generally prefer digital payment methods such as cards, mobile apps and QR payments. Suripong Tantiyanon, country manager for Visa Thailand, credited the shift in preference and the rise in confidence to industry players and the government, which have actively promoted e-payments as part of the national agenda. “We also believe the increased preference for digital payments can be attributed to the proliferation of payment forms and acceptance points,” said Suripong. Consumers can make payments with a wider range of connected devices and payment applications on phones and wearable devices. “QR codes meanwhile offer merchants in traditionally cash-based sectors a fast, cost-effective and secure digital-payment solution,” he said. The study found that two in five Thais carried less cash than they did two years ago, compared to 26 per cent in 2017. They said they did so for security reasons, because they were making more payments digitally and because using cash was often a bother. The study also showed that, of those who tried going cashless, more than half

could manage a day without cash and 45 per cent could last without cash for more than three days. In terms of future expectation, more Thais are confident about the country becoming a cashless society. Nearly one in three is confident that this will be a cashless society within three years, compared to 11 per cent who said so in 2017. “The findings are encouraging,” Suripong said.

“We believe we’re on the right track and it’s important to help more consumers and merchants embrace the benefits of digital payments. At the same time, we’re committed to collaborating with all stakeholders in the payment industry as we continue transforming Thailand into a cashless society.” Source: The Nation

ASEAN finance ministers and central bank governors meet in Chiang Rai

Finance ministers and central bank deputies of 13 East Asian countries earlier this month discussed plans to increase the role of local currencies through currency swap transactions to avoid overreliance on the U.S. dollar. The plan was discusse, the ASEAN Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting, which was held in Chiang Rai on April 5. Lavaron Sangsnit, director general of the Thai Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Policy Office, said participants agreed it is time the 13 countries, rely more on local currencies, starting with swaps that will involve exchange of interest and exchange of currencies to lessen reliance on the U.S. dollar, which is subject to fluctuation. He said the 13 countries -- the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations members plus China, Japan and South Korea -- have yet to finalize when the scheme will be implemented, but it will be discussed in detail in the upcoming meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors. In their two days of talks, the

ASEAN finance ministers and central bank governors also highlighted collaboration on ASEAN payment connectivity, cybersecurity resilience and information-sharing platforms amid the emergence of electronic finance. The ministers also discussed the issue of making electronic payments across the border, as many countries have been developing the infrastructure needed for a cashless society. For instance, Thailand has developed the infrastructure to accommodate payments using QR codes, internet and mobile. Cooperation in this sector will make things more convenient for consumers and make financial transactions in Asean countries much easier. The region will also implement the Asean Single Window for sharing information and facilitating trade and investment, Lavaron said, adding that this is already in place in nine countries with the exception of Laos. ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

State schools in Thailand are forcing private schools out of business

Aggressive recruitment strategies by state schools in Thailand are forcing many private schools out of business, it has been claimed. Private Education Commissioner Nattawut Parapob recently told The Nation that private schools in Thailand have never had it so tough when it comes to student recruitment. “I have learned that several private schools have now gone out of business,” Commissioner Nattawut said. He said things are so bad that some private schools are even offering cash incentives to students who enrol. Commissioner Nattawut has called on the government to provide a level playing field for both state and private schools regarding the recruitment of students. He added that there was also no reason for state schools that have less than 10

Mathayom 1 students to continue operating. Nattawut said the Office of Vocational Education Commission’s policy to recruit students for pre-vocational education – which is equivalent to Mathayom 1 to 3 levels – had also dealt a heavy blow to private schools. “These schools also poach students from private institutions,” he said. Meanwhile, an informed source told The Nation state vocational colleges were known to have approached students from private schools even before they completed their Mathayom 3. “They offer scholarships just to ensure that the students will opt for the state school,” the source said. Currently, the government offers subsidies to both private and state schools based on the number of students enrolled – the higher the number of enrolled students, the higher the subsidy. 16 Tips on How to Stay Hydrated As anyone will know when it comes to caring for your body, hydration plays a key role. You could, in theory at least, go without food for a considerable period of time, try and go too long without sustenance from water and hydration, though, and you will be in a lot of trouble. This is why it’s so important that you can differentiate between facts, fiction and what actually should be done if you wish to stay well hydrated. Important hydration facts Of course, it’s important to also take into account the importance of staying wellhydrated in the first place. Some of the most important factors about hydration that you should look to memorize include: 1. We get hydration from a lot more than just liquids. If you want to stay in good physical condition, then you can get a lot of hydration from your food. Most of our foods will come with water in them, and obviously things like tea and coffee have water in them, too.

2. Your water intake is all about your own lifestyle. Someone who lives a lowimpact life from a physical standpoint will naturally use up less water than someone who is moving around all the time. The ‘right’ water intake for you might be totally different to what it will be for someone else at home. 3. Hydration matters in exercise. Since hydration plays a key role in making sure that our muscles and joints can work better, staying hydrated during a workout is about more than simply helping you to handle the excess sweating! 4. Hydration helps protect our spines. The more water that you take in, the more likely it is that you will have a strong and healthy spine. The spinal cord gets a lot of help from hydration, and this will make it easier for you to stay in good, strong and lean physical shape. 5. Staying hydrated regulates temperature. If you are too warm, or too cold, then drinking water will help to bring

up your temperature to the right level. When the body is hydrated, it can function properly and this allows the body to make sure your temperature stays at a happy and healthy level throughout the day. How to stay hydrated If you want to make sure that you do more of the fact and less of the myth, then, here are some tips. Stick to these, and you should find the challenge of staying hydrated will soon be far less difficult than it might appear at this moment in time. So, what can you do if you wish to stay hydrated? Have a water bottle with you at all times. It’s always good to carry around a water bottle with you. Keep it on your desk, in a visible compartment on your bag or even swinging from your keychain: whatever makes you drink more water, do it. Don’t allow yourself to fall out of the habit of regular hydration – if the bottle is visible, you are less likely to forget.

Set alarms. If you are going to be doing a task which will push your body towards its limit, then set a timer that you can follow. Set times every half an hour to stop and have a glass of water during a workout; to have a quick sip is very important. Add some fruit. Do you find it hard to drink water all day as it’s has a bland taste? Then change it up. Throw in some berries or cucumber, even some mint, and you can add a bit of taste to make your water a more enjoyable to drink. Don’t discount coffee and tea. Many of us try to cut back on our tea and coffee as we believe in the myth that caffeine is dehydrating us. Make your cup of tea/coffee as watery as you can, and you can easily enjoy your beverage whilst keeping yourself well hydrated. HHHHHHHHH HH

17 Pneumonia, a serious health risk from having influenza, in Elders We are living in an era of extreme weather, promoting more frequent outbreaks of influenza. Although the flu is a mild disease, that we can resolve ourselves, it can pose a great risk in elders or people with low immunity or underlying diseases, causing pneumonia and even death. Dr. Sirichai Saengngammongkhol, a specialist in pulmonary medicine and pulmonary critical care medicine at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shares that the severity of influenza depends on an individual’s immunity. People who have low immune system such as children, older adults, pregnant women as well as people with chronic diseases such as kidney diseases, diabetes and cancer, when having influenza, they are at higher risk of complications such as pneumonia and infection of the middle ear.

Lung inflammation or “Pneumonia” is a consequent condition caused by the influenza virus entering the body through the respiratory system. The severity of the disease varies from person to person. Elders with low immune systems are at more risk of

Some people can self-treat by using antipyretic drugs from a pharmacy, but for elders or people with underlying diseases, it may take longer time to recover and at the same time run the risk of further complications. Some types of pneumonia are caused by bacterial infection and require oral or injection antibiotics. The treatments also depend of the severity of the infection.

complications from pneumonia, conditions such as infection in the bloodstream or respiratory failure carry a 50% fatality rate. As a result pneumonia in older people is far more dangerous than in younger people. “Pneumonia is developed in a period of 3 - 4 days after the illness has begun. The main symptoms are coughing, changes of sputum color, shortness of breath, pain in the chest, exhaustion and a highgrade fever. These symptoms indicate complications other than an ordinary flu. The common symptoms of pneumonia in elders is alteration of consciousness or confusion which may or may not follow fever episodes or coughing.” Dr. Sirichai also shares that if a patient is suspected of having lung infections, the doctor will investigate via a chest x-ray and blood tests. The sputum is also collected for a culture and sensitivity test to find out what type of bacteria may cause the pneumonia. The results will lead to the appropriate treatment. Influenza can be resolved by itself with proper rest, however, the presence of a high fever, difficult and painful breathing or loss of appetite, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Dr. Sirichai emphasizes that all people should receive the influenza vaccination once a year and for people over 50, IPD vaccination to prevent pneumococcus pneumonia is also recommended. This IPD vaccine requires 2 injections with oneyear intervals in order to have long term protection. In addition, the prevention of influenza and pneumonia is still the priority. Enough rest and avoiding close contact with people with influenza are key. Moreover, frequent hand washing also helps to prevent contracting the illness along with regular exercises and a proper diet. Pulmonary Medicine Clinic, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin

Normally, patients will improve within 2-3 days after receiving the antibiotics. For viral pneumonias, the treatment is supported by lots of rest and good hydration. However, elderly patients or ones with underlying diseases may be hospitalized for closer observation to prevent or detect complications early. “We can reduce the risks of influenza by once-a-year vaccination and the reason for this, rather frequent vaccinations, is mainly because the strains of the influenza virus change all the time.”

Taking 10,000 steps per day isn’t magic, but it is great for your health

phone, making sure to keep your device in your pocket when you walk.

How to increase your steps

Alternatively, download Walk with Map My Walk, Runkeeper, Google Fit or the Pedometer app to your smartphone. These apps do a reasonable job at tracking steps. Perhaps less accurate than a fitness tracker but most of the apps are free of charge. Download one of the apps to your

Even if you don’t have a fitness tracker like a Fitbit or Apple Watch, you’ve probably heard that it is beneficial to take 10,000 steps a day. But where did the 10,000 step recommendation come from? And what happens to your body when you take 10,000 steps? Ten thousand steps was first popularized by Japanese pedometers in the 1960s under the name “manpo-kei,” which means “10,000 steps meter.” Taking 10,000 steps per day has since be integrated into one of the biggest global public health messages of the past decade. Today, taking 10,000 steps a day is a popular goal because some research has shown coupled with other healthy behaviors it can lead to a decrease in chronic illness like diabetes, metabolic syndromes and heart disease, according to Michael Roizen, a physician and chief wellness officer at Cleveland Clinic.

While there is nothing magical about the number 10,000 - it’s not like if you take 9,999 steps you’ll gain no benefit - aiming for 10,000 steps per day is a good indicator that you’ve been active. And taking 10,000 steps doesn’t just increase activity levels, it has other substantial benefits too. A study on postal workers in Glasgow, Scotland, who walked 15,000 steps a day, had fewer risk factors for heart disease than colleagues who sat throughout the day. At the end of the day, whether you’re walking 8,000 or 13,000 steps a day, it’s key to get moving.

Here’s how you can get started

Buy a fitness tracker such as a Fitbit, or one of the many similar fitness trackers available online on sites like Lazada. If you have an iPhone consider buying an Apple Watch - it’s the best smartwatch and fitness tracker available but also one of the most expensive.

Simple tricks you can use to increase your daily step count is to park your vehicle at the end of the parking lot so you get additional steps. If you live in a condo always take the stairs instead of the lift and when at the shopping mall always keep walking when using the escalator. Try to get up and move for 5-10 minutes every hour, making sure you are not sedentary for long periods. Make a wonderful stroll on the beach part of your daily routine. A brisk 30 minute walk will get you closer to your daily step goal.

22 Back To School Reality for Kids And Parents

I n Thailand, the school year ends i n mid-March and summer festivities are i n full swing by April with the amazing celebrations of Songkran, Thailand’s biggest w ater and New Year festival. Families e mbark on summer adventures and plan exciting activities for their kids to experience t he very best that Thailand has to offer d uring this overwhelmingly hot season. H owever, it’s that time of year again and kids and parents are probably feeling a lot of different emotions with the new school year commencing shortly. As we say farewell to the old and greet the new year with open arms, there are a few things we can do to get back into the swing of things. The new school year brings with it new t eachers, new friends, and new routines, some of which can be a little staggering, to say the least. Some kids may feel nervous while others may be excited for their first day back at school but soon kids, parents, and teachers get into the rhythm of routines. T he key to having a stress-free week or m orning before school starts is to have both a bedtime and morning routine which leads to a smooth transition into the new school year. Consistency means you have conquered part of the uphill battle that may or may not come with the ‘summer-is-over reality’. A nother reality is coming to terms with the fact that your child may never love school. This is a truth we have all had to deal with being children and there is not a lot one can say or do to force that love onto anyone.

E ncouragement to care is key. Motivating your child and focusing on their passions may help them find direction and purpose during those emotional times when school is just not cool. O rientation is important on the fir s t day back as children find their way to t heir new classroom and meet their new c lassmates and teacher. As students and p arents, making notes of the classroom number, teacher’s name, and perhaps even a locker number is always helpful and makes things easier to remember. Getting to know your child’s teacher i s important, as teachers, by the very d efinition, teach and spend a significant a mount of time with your children. At the same time, getting involved in your child’s school can be a r ewarding experience as you gain more insight into your child and his/her day-to-day environment. F inally, friendships at school are a necessit y in child deve lopment and a lthough t hey come with t he good and b ad, these friendships an d experiences foster soc ial and emotion al development a nd are an essential part of growing up. For some children, friendships can be hard t o navigat e while others find their tribes almost immediately. It is important to help your child build and develop social skills by inspiring them and helping them understand the importance of friendship and how to manage conflict should it arise, especially on their first day back at school or just starting out in a school environment.

RIP Google+: Tech giant officially closes its failed social network

G oogle has closed its failed social n etwork Google+, with the company announcing it is in the process of deleting all user content uploaded to the site. T he search engine giant announced in December that it would be closing the service “due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers’ expectations.” Google had announced back in August plans to shut down the service, then a major security breach in November last year, which saw the personal data of 52 million users leaked to third parties, prompted the firm to push forward with its April closure. F urther damage was caused to the r eputation of the site when Google was forced to admit that it knew that some user d ata had been comprised long before it publicly disclosed the breach. Google+ first launched in 2011 as a rival to Facebook and was lauded for its clean design and innovative features. While Google+ had millions of users anyone with a gmail account automatically had a profile created on the social network - very few people were actually posting to t he site, causing it to gradually fade into obscurity with the emergence of Facebook and Instagram. HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

L ast year, Google revealed that 90 percent of user sessions on Google+ “ended within five seconds”. By comparison, a user s ession on Facebook averages around 20 minutes. From April, users visiting the s ite will be greeted with a message that reads: “Google+ is no longer available for consumer (personal) and brand accounts. “From all of us on the Google+ team, thank you for making Google+ such a special place.” Some enterprise versions of Google+ w ill remain online, but personal accounts will be closed indefinitely, with all photos, v ideos and status updates shared on the site being deleted. G oogle said back in January that it would be contacting users with instructions o n how to back up their Google+ data. With its closure, Google+ joins the ranks of other failed social networks such as Wave, MySpace and Friends Reunited.

Grand Opening Jaya Food Court

Food courts can be amazing places to catch a quick bite to eat or gather with a group o f friends to enjoy great food at affordable prices. Jaya, a relatively new open-air food court, is located on Soi 94 and is definitely a ‘great bang for your buck’ type of place. 26 Tyto alba Barn Owl days a denser and longer shading is tinted yellow on the body top and gray on the under parts. The eyes open from the eighth day. The iris is initially colored blue and in the course of four weeks into a dark brown. The beak is whitish at hatching, but decreases rapidly to a gray color. The toes a re initially pink yellow, and have until fledging of young owls, a dark gray color.

Distribution

T he Barn Owl Tyto alba is a species of bird in the order of owls ( Strigiformes ) and the family of barn owls ( Tytonidae ) . The Barn Owl is a very bright, long-legged o wl that has no ear tufts. Among her most prominent identifying features include the heart-shaped face as well as the relatively small, black eyes. It is nocturnal and can be observed in the day only at their resting places or hatchery. The 33 to 35 centimeters long, light-colored, long winged and long-legged owl , reaches a wingspan of up to 85 centimeters and has fairly short tail feathers. Males and females are very similar, but females are slightly larger than t he male and stained slightly darker. The weight ranges from about 200 grams with the smallest forms (especially in the Galapagos Islands) up to about 500 grams (North American Barn Owl). The eponymous, distinctive heart-shaped face veil is very bright; depending on the subspecies, he is white to light gray or light rust. The top of the body is usually golden brown with a fine gray spot drawing. The base can vary from a very pure white to a light brown; also the drawings and spots of the individual species differ very much from each other. The beak is pale yellow, the claws are horn-colored, and the iris of the eye is dark brown to black. The toes are nearly featherless and dark gray brown. The nestlings have, unlike other owls, two consecutive shadings: The first shading is white and short. On the sides of its neck is almost completely missing. After about twelve

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus rats and small rabbits, birds, r eptiles, frogs and insects can locally or regionally play an important role. In case of unfavorable weather conditions as well as during the breeding season, t hey expand their hunting t ime, to include the day. T hey detect their prey by optical and audible means. The face veil enhances the sound collection for hearing, and shields other sounds. During hunting it often g lides only a few meters above the ground, and their f light is virtually noiseless. F low noise during flying is be avoided by the comb-like serrated outer web of its front swing arm, and hand by a dense white fuzz on the tops of their wings. O bservations suggest that it complies with regular routes in hunting and particularly flying along in hedges, f ences and ditches. If they discover hunting prey during flight, they can fall suddenly from the flight path, and take the prey with their clawed toes.

Habitat

T he barn owl settles in her huge distribution area, except closed rainforests, the interior deserts and mountain areas. Semi-open landscapes such as savannas, semi-deserts and steppes, and trees are preferred. Breeding grounds are barns and steeples, and rarely tree hollows. The long wings and gliding flights are adaptations to hunting in open terrain. During their rest period, daytime, they sit in hiding places like barns, ruins, in tree holes or crevices.

Behavior

The Barn Owl hunts at dusk and at night, especially small mammals. In 47 of 52 studies from the entire range of the species small rodents were at least half of all prey. Bats,

Voice; a variety of eerie screeching rasping and hissing sounds can be heared.

“Poetry in Motion” – The Bats of Cha-Am!

This poem, originally appeared in the December 2005 issue of Poetry Magazine, written by the well-published Canadian poet, Amanda Jernigan. At fifteen years old, she had spent a year in Thailand as an exchange student. We guess that a trip may have included a visit to the Nayang Bat Cave near Cha-Am where she received her inspiration and that Cha’am is ‘poetic licence’ for Cha-Am.

‘Billowing’ is a very apt description of the appearance e ach sunset of probably millions of fruit bats that flow out from the mountainside in what appears to be a rather sudden cloud of smoke streaming into the skies. Having said millions, some people only say hundreds of thousands, but others estimate 10 million in the swarms above, but there’s no one counting!

Nayang Bat Cave is north of Cha-Am, not really that easy to find, but if you travel about 5 kilometres north along the scenic route before reaching Puktien Beach; the locals will steer you inland towards a very large outcrop with a distinctive cave in the face. The nearby viewpoint, a platform on the roof of a private building, is likely to have a few visitors. The owner may want 20 THB for the privilege. A round 6.30 pm you’ll notice an increase of small flying creatures overhead before the masses emerge from the hillside.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

I t’s just starting to get dark, so best to choose a cloudless sky for a clear background if photography is on your mind. After 10 or 15 minutes of the steady stream flooding from the hillside to find their nightly succor, it’s all over. This is not a unique scene in Thailand, but many locals are oblivious to the spectacle. If you are into nature as a mass choreographed display, bats on this scale takes some beating. Take a drive some evening to be a witness. You may also be inspired to write poetry after the display!

Thailand - Income Tax

Everybody who has an income and is living in Thailand must have their own tax ID number. This can be issued by the tax office but you need to present ID such as your passport or ID card. You will also need to show why you need the number. The Revenue Office does have English speaking staff who can help with any queries.

T hose who live in Thailand for more than half the year are considered to be residents in the country for the purposes of tax. If you are a resident then you are expected to pay taxes on all income that you earn worldwide. If you are not a resident and are in the country for less than 180 days each year then you are only expected to pay tax on the income that you get from within Thailand. Those who do not have a work permit are not exempt from paying taxes. All income that is considered to be assessable comes u nder the heading of Personal Income Tax. This includes n on-cash payments such as accommodation or the use of a car. There are several different categories of personal income including income from employment, income from

a position held, income from royalties or dividends, income from rental agreements, income from construction work or income from any business. There are a series of deductions that can be made from assessable income and these need to be done in a specific order. A person completing a tax return will start with the assessable income amount, and then take away deductions such as expenses, then take away any personal allowances. The amount that is left is the amount that can be taxed. There are different percentages of deductions depending upon the type. These are reviewed regularly so the best course of action is to check the website of the Revenue office for the latest information. A n individual taxpayer has a personal allowance of 30,000 Thai Baht. If you are married and your spouse does not work then there is a similar allowance for them. You are also able to claim an allowance of 15,000 Thai Baht for each child under the age of 25 (a maximum of 3 children) if they are studying in full time education. If your parents are over the age of 60 and their income is less than 30,000 Thai Baht you can claim 30,000 Thai Baht each. If you are over the age of 65 then your own personal allowance becomes 190,000 Thai Baht. In addition to these there are allowances for education and life insurance as well as mortgage interest and contributions made to the social security system. Those who earn less than 150,000 Thai Baht are exempt from income tax. Anything over this amount and less than THB 500,000 is taxed at 10%. Between this amount and 1 million THB the tax rate is 20%. Over this amount and below 4 million THB is taxed at 30%. Anything above this amount is taxed at 37%. An individual is able to file their own tax return but all returns need to be in Thai, so non-Thai speakers should seek the help of an accountant. The Thai tax year runs from 1st January to the 31st December and the tax return should be with the tax office by the 31st March, to cover the previous tax year. Payments should be made promptly at the same

time as there are penalties for late filing and payment. It may be the case that you need to submit a return every six months if your income is from your own business or for the hiring out of equipment. E mployers will withhold a certain amount of tax at source and this amount is then offset against the tax bill when you file a tax return. This reduces the possibility of getting a large bill. This can be as much as the top rate 37% but will depend on the type of work that you do and your earnings. There are a number of double taxation agreements i n place with other countries which ensure that you are not taxed twice on any income earned in another country. Thailand currently has 51 such agreements in place and a complete list can be found on the website of the revenue office. 230 I n order to reduce this worry the Lessee should check the Contract and carry out the following actions: 1 Check the Contract, is there any Clause of Renewal? Renewal conditions should clarify the future rental rate, and whether the same or a change in Terms and Conditions will be used. 2 Is the Lessor alive? 3 Is the Leased Property still under the ownership of the Lessor or has it changed? 4 Before the expiry date of the Lease, the Lessee should notify the Lessor in writing that he wishes to renew the Lease Contract for another 30 years. I f the Lessor defaults or refuses to renew the contract, the Lessee may take the case to Court for legal e nforcement. The judgement will be made in favour of the Lessee in the end.

HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

634 Is Teaching Code Really That Important?

The simple answer is YES! Educators a nd parents are posed to engage in the ‘technology’ conversation regularly. These c onversations often revert to behavioral i ssues; lack of social interaction and for parents a serious concern regarding their child’s ‘addictive’ nature when it comes to on -line behavior. All of which are legitimate concerns for both parents and educators. T he real point that doesn’t seem to b e an area for discussion is the fact that our young generation, a digital generation, has little to no understanding of how their devices function. They have never known a world that is not interconnected to a device, the internet or a video screen. Children (and adults alike) simply expect the screen to be interactive and productive. G iven the argument that we have a d igital generation and knowing that the t echnological race is ever moving and developing, we should be most concerned a bout the ever-widening gap in our understanding of how these devices actually function. Our kids are users, some more than others, but users all the same and this gap is growing exponentially as is our dependency.

So, back to the question – why teach c ode? Like English or Thai, code is a language. Computer Science is the subject and code is this subject’s language – how w e communicate with it. All teaching philosophies identify core subjects. These subjects are the backbone of any curriculum a s they are often interdependent and t he core subjects are identified by their p romotion of key skills: problem solving, c reativity and communication. There is a plethora of arguments for and against the c ore subjects being limited to Language A rts, Maths and Science as many of the non core subjects, in their own right, also promote key skills. Computer Science and the language of code is being pushed by m any to take its position as a necessary member of the core subjects in any school’s curriculum. T he discussion regarding the i mportance of learning ‘code’ is not new; not by any stretch. Initially, many thought this push to ‘code’ was a flash in the pan – a tech coolness trend. However, we are n ow seeing the reality in our millennial generation and coming to understand how

t ruly important this skill is. Unfortunately, o ur classrooms are falling behind. It’s all a bout jobs! There is a significant gap in t he job market for individuals who can code. For parents, concerned about their c hild’s future this is a great argument to increase the understanding of code as it is a skill that actually affects a young person’s employment opportunities. For teachers, we always come back to ‘skills’. How does code hold up against other subjects that offer concrete opportunities for skill development? Here are some reasons to consider: 1 . Programming promotes problems olving: Problem-solving and better yet, l earning how to approach problems is central to learning. Taking a large problem and systematically breaking it down into a series of smaller problems is not only a key skill but a life skill. We all hope to develop critical thinking skills in our children; taking a logical, systematic approach to solving a problem is the cornerstone of well developed critical thinking skills. 2 . Coding promotes persistence: Children have the opportunity to experience ‘struggle’ or ‘failure’ that is not defeatist but actually offers an opportunity to learn from failure. They learn quickly that ‘debugging’ the code is half the fun. Here’s an ‘in situ’ opportunity to develop your child’s ability to ‘bounce back’. 3 . Coding promotes creativity: Learning code helps to create the balance between merely ‘consuming’ digital media and ‘creating’ digital media. Language offers us a forum to communicate and, as code is a language, it offers a new and exciting platform for communication. O pportunities to be creative and e xpressive as well as any opportunities t hat encourage positive thinking and self

a wareness are always welcome in the classroom. 4 . Programming offers concrete o pportunities to apply knowledge and s kills: The application of knowledge and s kill is how we can recognize a child’s understanding. Here is a concrete space to promote the application of their knowledge and understanding. Coding uses data and analyzing that data demands an organized approach. Math skills are exactly that and Maths’ relationship to coding is concrete and tangible. Children have the opportunity to use what they are learning to develop and create. What more could we ask for? 5 . Coding is collaborative: While we a re concerned with critical thinking, the a bility to communicate and seeing our c hildren persist in spite of ‘problems’, we cannot ignore the need to be able to work c ollaboratively. Opportunities to promote and develop collaboration are endless in a coding classroom. Students work together, s hare ideas and feel safe to take risks as they are in a group that is developing and learning together. 6 . Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Look anywhere o n line and you will find an article or commentary about the current gap in the job market for skilled programmers. Every generation is faced with access and entry i nto the ‘real world’. Currently, being able to code is a skill that can, perhaps, move a person’s CV from the pile of ‘maybe’ to the very important ‘short list’ for interviews. M argaret Mead is famously quoted for saying, ‘Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.’ School curriculums are designed to grow, develop and adapt. Code is a language and Computer Science is its platform. It’s time for this subject to take its place as a core part of a school’s curriculum.

10 38 Calling For a New Mindset for Golf in Asia!

The 13th Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2019 will be held at Gurugram in India; home of the DLF Golf & Country Club. Besides the Summit in October, the venue will also play host to the grand 20th Anniversary of the prestigious ASIAN GOLF AWARDS. Some thought provoking editorial comment about the future of Asian golf has been made prior to the event by the APGS Group. Here’s what the organisers had to say:

Smart Apps to promote unused tee times

The pride of super luxury communities of Gurugram, the impeccable DLF Golf, and Country Club was honored w ith the coveted ‘Asia Pacific Order of Zenith’ by Asia Pacific Golf Group at the Asian Golf Awards 2018. “The time has come for the golf industry in Asia, which incidentally is reported to have more than 14% of the world’s golf courses to take the industry seriously. I t ranks third after North America and Europe, and w ith this sort of critical mass in place, it’s time to start taking matters in its own hands. The industry is large and it’s growing in Asia and we need conscientious decision makers from the region to be responsible for charting and growing the game instead of adopting oftentimes failed cookie-cutter templates from other regions of the world. While the developed world struggles to arrest a decline in the golf industry, there is tremendous potential for the growth of the game in Asia. By just looking at population a nd economic megatrends, there is no denying the fact that Asia has all the right ingredients to throw into the pot to stew up a healthy and promising elixir for golf’s growth.

in China, India and ASEAN, close to 1 billion are in the tender 25 years and below age group. When viewed in the context of higher education, higher wages and more moving up into the middle class, the region really starts showing off its muscle. The middle class in China and India is expected to exceed 1 billion people by 2030. There is no denying the fact that the numbers speak for themselves and one cannot ignore the fact that even a tiny percentage from this huge prospect base can give golf a massive boost. The math looks good and if the golf industry comes together to start working on this potential market, the future of golf at least in Asia is very promising. To understand the potential for the future, the Asia P acific Golf Group conducted a random on-line survey amongst Asians under the age of 30 years to determine their perception of golf. We received over 1,300 valid responses and these were some of the key findings: Do you play golf? Only 9% of the respondents gave an affirmative answer. What do you not like about golf? 91% reported that it was too expensive while a further 93% thought that golf was only for the rich. Would you consider taking up the game if it was inexpensive? The response was overwhelmingly over 95%.

Young golfers say golf is for the rich N ote that the objective of this random survey was to get a read from the young in the region as to how they perceived golf and when analysed, it was discovered there was a high “aspiration factor” amongst this target group to give golf a try. With this knowledge, the industry must put its money w here its mouth is. For decades, the golf industry has talked about making the game more affordable and more accessible and more playable. Unfortunately, this has just remained as talk with no real action being undertaken.

F irst off, take the combined population of three geographic regions in Asia – China, India and the Association o f Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Collectively, these regions account for more than 3.3 billion humans. In any language, this is a massive number. Next, break down this number by age groups with the focus falling on those under 25 years old and we are looking at a number in excess of 1 billion. The latest figures available on the size of the combined economies of the regions under review hits the revenue barometer gauge at over US$20 trillion dollars. Note that Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are not included in this review. One just can’t ignore these staggering statistics and when projected against key demographics of the population HUA HIN TODAY, May 2019

The golf industry needs to engage with technology and make the game more accessible using Smart Apps like tee-time reservation services to promote and sell hours that go unused daily throughout the region. Special discounted tariffs should be looked at to convert the unsold times and this is where affordability comes into play. Allow flexibility where new and younger golfers can play a reduced number of holes instead of having to play a full nine or eighteen holes.

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat at a new GolfSixes format with fireworks, music and shot clocks Another way to attract the young is for golf course owners and operators to change their business models to give access to the general public to play the game. China, India and the ASEAN countries need to seriously look at c onverting from membership clubs to a more pluralised o perating system with the objective of promoting and growing golf. This infusion of new blood is urgently needed and, in an environment where very few public courses exist, ease of accessibility must be boldly pursued. In the case of India, around 160 courses are owned by the military. These ArmyNavy-Air Force owned courses account for 60 percent of all golf courses in India. The time has come for these courses to throw open their doors to a growing middle class so that golf no longer remains a game for an exclusive few. T here is most certainly an aspiration amongst the young to take up the game and with role models like China’s v eteran Zhang Lianwei and young superstar Li Haotong and Indian veterans like Jeev Milka Singh and youngsters like Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma together with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, there has never been a better time to promote golf to the region’s burgeoning young market. T he movers and shakers in Asia must show their initiative and take a bold leap forward to change for the better and grow golf. Everything is in place and the time for ACTION is NOW.” www.asiapacificgolfgroup.com www.golfconference.org

12 40 Tiger is the Master of the 2019 US Masters

Tiger Woods did something last month that he had never done before in his extraordinary career—he came from behind to win a Major in the final round.

H e did so by shooting a solid, grinding 70, not s pectacular but plenty good enough when third-round l eader Francesco Molinari came apart with two awful m istakes. Finding the water at both 12 and 15, to make double-bogeys, turned what had once been a three-shot lead into a final round 74 and fifth place. There were no fist-pumping bombs, but Woods didn’t need them. After bogeying the 10th, he played mistake-free golf the rest of the way, making two-putt birdies at 13 and 15. Hitting his tee shot to five-feet at 16 for his sixth birdie of the day gave him a two-shot lead, At that moment, the only thing that could stop him from claiming his 5th green jacket was the thunderstorms that were closing in on the golf course. His bogey at 18 was— more or less planned—he wanted to make certain he would make no more than 5 and played the hole very carefully.

How sweet it is; Tiger’s fifth green jacket

A fter an 11-year drought, golf’s most polarising and popular figure had outlasted a star-studded leaderboard. It’s his first major win since the 2008 U.S. Open, 15th of his career and first at Augusta National since 2005. With five green jackets now in his Augusta locker, Woods is second alltime behind only Jack Nicklaus, who won six times between 1963 and 1986. The joy on his face after he tapped in the final putt was evidence of how much Woods has changed since his last major win. The host of players who waited for him in t he scoring area to congratulate him as he came off the 18th green was another sign of how much he has changed. In his victory press conference Woods used words like, “blessed,” “fortunate,” “lucky,” and “amazing.” Those words were almost never a part of his vocabulary in the past. He was funny—even self-deprecating. Talking about the back nine leaderboard, which included five players tied for the lead at one point, he shook his head and said, “No wonder I’m balding.” The Tiger Woods who accepted the green jacket from last year’s champion, Patrick Reed is very different from the one who let then-nemesis Phil Mickelson slip the jacket onto his shoulders in 2005. As a golfer, this may not have been the transcendent player of old. He needed to overcome i njuries—back problems, knee problems and the various swing changes and swing coaches. U ntil last September, when he won the Tour C hampionship, Woods had gone more than five years without winning a tournament of any kind. But the fusion surgery he had in 2017 finally solved his back problems and he began to play well again in 2018. Apart from overcoming these physical problems, this was a much improved person; one who, perhaps for the first time, truly appreciated the greatness of Tiger Woods. F ollowing the victory, Woods made an appearance in Butler Cabin to receive his fifth green jacket from 2018 champion Patrick Reed. Sliding on the jacket, a wry smile c rept across his face. “It fits,” he said. Making his third appearance at the Masters, Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat enjoyed a promising start with his best round of 69.

It was such a thrill to welcome Robin Brooke, Olo Max Brown, Steve McDowell and Charles Riechelmann to the Sansara show gallery and nearly completed development last week. They were not here too long but they made a lasting impression on us all. 41 13 The Pros Getting It Wrong Don’t Assume a Short Putt is ‘Given’!

The Rules of Golf do not allow for intent, as Sergio Gracia found out at the quarterfinal round of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. Garcia lost the seventh hole to Matt Kuchar after back-handing—and missing a tap-in putt. for rules of golf and amateur status. “It’s just a question. Did you concede? Either the player did or didn’t.” K uchar’s obligation was to answer h onestly. He had not made a concession. That Kuchar said he would have conceded t he putt is irrelevant because, as Winter explains, “You can’t retroactively concede a hole.” ‘ I saw Sergio miss his 10 foot putt,” Kuchar said. “And as I looked up again, I saw he had missed the next one. I asked Robby Ware (referee), I said, “Listen, I don’t know how to handle this, but I didn’t concede the putt, Sergio missed the putt.” “He knew he made a mistake.

Although Kuchar acknowledged that h e would have conceded the shortie to G arcia, that’s not what matters. What m atters is that Kuchar didn’t concede it. That’s why the stroke counted. Garcia raked at his ball before Kuchar had a chance to say or do anything to indicate that the putt was conceded.

Let’s go to the letter of the law.

Under Rule 3.2 b, which covers matchplay concessions, not available in stroke play, a concession is only valid when it’s clearly communicated. That communication can be verbal. It can also be carried out by an action or a gesture, such as a hand-wave that tells your opponent, “That’s good, pick it up.”

I said I didn’t want that to be how a hole is won or lost. “Certainly I didn’t use any gamesmanship, it’s not a match play tactic, it’s not anything. It was just one of those mistakes that Sergio made. And I said it’s kind of one of those tough deals in the game of golf.” Garcia to his credit took full responsibility but to suggest Kuchar should concede the next hole for his mistake was probably a little cheeky. “It’s quite simple: I screwed it up, it’s as simple as that,” Garcia said. “Obviously I missed my putt and I kind of tapped it with the back of my putter before he said anything. It’s a loss of hole. I understand that.”

That part of the rule—allowing actions or gestures to communicate concessions—was made explicit in the revised Rules of Golf that went into effect this year. For most of us playing a friendly match at home, a scenario like this isn’t likely to be an issue. But this was a serious match-play competition carried out under the watch of a referee. The referee was PGA Tour rules official Robby Ware, and his job was to apply the rules by finding out if the putt had been conceded. “ It is not uncommon in a refereed match where you want to be a sure a player has conceded an opponent’s next stroke,” says Craig Winter, the USGA’s senior director

539 The rise of plant-based diets

Plant -based eating is surging in popularity although letting go off meat seems predominantly hard for the male part of our population. Devouring meat seems to go hand in hand with descending from the male human species as it shows in advertisement on tv and magazines, billboards and in our own back yard when firing up a BBQ. But, there is a new trend which is surging in status how people will eat in 2019………across the social media there is a big push to show that vegetarian and vegan consumption can be seen as a male choice in 2019.Plant based food blogs ,vlogs and new cooking recipes are showing how to ditch meat for producebased alternatives with a meaty flavor. They all trying to market a new product for our male counterpart based on veggies but with a “taste” of meat. How will they create this meaty taste which is apparently so important as a selling point for the vegetarian human male species? A big part of creating vegetarian or vegan meals with a meaty flavor is umami. What exactly means Umami? Definition of umami (Entry 1 of 2) : the taste sensation that is produced by several amino acids and nucleotides (such as glutamate and aspartate) and has a rich or meaty flavor characteristic of cheese, cooked meat, mushrooms, soy, and ripe tomatoes : SAVORY entry 2 sense 2Umami is often described as a meaty flavor and is particularly strong in aged or fermented products, like cheese and wine. Carla Ranicki— compare BITTER entry 2 sense 1b, SALTY entry 2 sense 1b, SOUR entry 2 sense 1b, SWEET entry 3 sense 2 Definition of umami (Entry 2 of 2) : being, inducing, or marked by one of the five basic taste sensations that is typically induced by several amino acids and nucleotides (such as glutamate and aspartate) and has a rich or meaty flavor characteristic of cheese, cooked meat, mushrooms, soy, and ripe tomatoes crab risotto made from local crabs is powerful with the big umami flavor of brown meat.— Jay Rayner: SAVORY entry 1 sense e— compare BITTER entry 1 sense 1a, SALTY entry 1 sense 1b, SOUR entry 1 sense 1, SWEET entry 1 sense 1 This is said about UMAMI in Merriam Webster Dictionary. There is a tale about a Japanise scientist who first discovered the savory taste of amino acid which occurred in soup stocks when made with seaweed. It is called the fifth basic taste, next to sour, sweet, bitter and salty. This savory taste can be found in mushrooms not just only your basic mushrooms, shitake and oyster mushrooms are gaining popularity and as for a profitable business growing mushrooms can be a very profitable choice now vegan and vegetarian food options are in the upswing. Umami can also be found in mature cheeses, anchovies and foods enhanced with msg. The latter is not something I would prefer due to allergic reactions a lot of people experience when eating msg. Besides Umami another trend in the upsweep of the food business is the exchange of flour for cauliflower or swapping your bun for lettuce. This is not solely related to vegetarian and vegan restaurants, but even fast food joints are swapping flour for plant-based packaging. Think of chicken wraps, wrapped in lettuce instead of flourbased wraps or think of rice which is replaced with milled cauliflower. With all these developments in the food business going on, one can see new opportunities business wise. Trends and their followers create a refreshing look on food whether you like it or not and that is a good thing. A mindset being stimulated to think outside the box opens a whole new world of opportunities business wise and health wise .
