Accordingly comments in this column about festive happenings, about the variety of articles in this edition of Hua Hin Today or other light-hearted remarks would be inappropriate. Our readers may need to recognise that the current situation is unprecedented for the Thai Nation. As our cover story describes, there is a need for sensitivity and understanding by those unaware of the intensity of the emotions now being felt by the Thai people. The Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has described his hopes by stating “People should use this opportunity to support one another because all of us may be different, but we have one heart because we have a shared father of the land.” The Prime Minister also spoke the words that have been used over the centuries when a revered monarch has passed and the future seems imponderable: “Thai brothers and sisters, His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX has died. Long live the new King.” We can be confident that when the time is right and our focus returns to the future; colour, vibrancy and festivities will once again characterise our welcoming community.

4 Strict Measures for Loaded Trucks in Hua Hin The Hua Hin Municipality, police officers, soldiers, Prachuab Khirikhan Public Transport Officers and the Hua Hin Traffic Division have met with owners and drivers of trucks loaded with soil, sand and cement powder to address environmental concerns and traffic management in the centre of the city. The advisor to the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Siraphan Kamolpramote and the deputy mayor of Hua Hin Ms. Phailin Kongphan addressed those attending about dust and other pollution caused by some of the trucks, as well as road accidents. The Municipality has to find some measures to deal with these problems. The meeting

resolved to more strictly enforce the laws including the necessary driver’s licenses. The need to cover truck loads was also discussed. Trucks will not be allowed in the city centre from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the loaded trucks are allowed only after 9 p.m. Violation of the law will result in fines between 3,000 and 10,000 THB or legal prosecution. Mr. Siraphan talked about his experience of seeing materials on the trucks falling down on the street. The drivers and owners then ignored what had happened, leading to road accidents. He said that everyone must obey the law. The authorities in Hua Hin have allowed some loaded trucks to cause problems for some time but this will not continue. Of 14 invited truck companies, 7 were represented. The authorities were concerned about the level of cooperation and will take steps to ensure compliance.

Public Transport in Hua Hin to be Strictly Monitored Relevant authorities are to closely supervise and monitor public transport services, particularly motorcycle-taxis and taxis in the city centre.

In a meeting of Police, municipal and military officers, the main issue was illegal acts and law violation by drivers of motorcycle-taxis and taxis in Hua Hin, which taint the image of the city. Unlawful acts reported by passengers have included speeding, improper dress and smoking while driving. In addition, Hua

Hin authorities have been acknowledged that some motorcycle-taxi drivers have only personal driving licenses and have not correctly registered their vehicles. They are being the opportunity correct this from 10th October 2016 to 10th January 2017. After this period, the authorities will arrest those who have ignore the laws. There are now 545 legal taxis, each of which has a yellow license plate; however 126 are illegal with a black plate. The illegal, with the help of some drivers of motorcycle-taxis, have been working here for almost 2 years.

Black Shirt Prices Being Checked

Hua Hin markets have been visited by various municipal officers to monitor the price of black shirts sold at the market shops. The visit followed reported increases in the price of black shirts being purchased to wear in mourning for the deceased King. The government, concerned with the problem, requires all shops selling black shirts to show price tags and to sell them at reasonable prices.

Hua Hin is soon to enjoy the high season when many tourists visit the city again. Public transport helps promote tourism and legal compliance will create a positive attitude among the visitors.

5 ‘Red Arrows’ to Hurtle Over Hua Hin! The Red Arrows have embarked on the British team’s biggest overseas tour in a decade. More than 20 displays and a series of fly-pasts are now in progress across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team. The Tour visits Hua Hin on Friday 9th November. The Tour will see 12 Hawk T1s flown from the Red Arrows’ base of RAF Scampton, in Lincolnshire UK, to the deployment locations. The major tour will take two months to complete. The Red Arrows is the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force. During an aerobatics display, Red Arrows pilots experience forces up to five times that of gravity (1g), and when performing the aerobatic maneuver ‘Vixen Break’, forces up to 7g can be reached, close to the 8g structural limit of the aircraft.

The team uses the same two-seat training aircraft used for advanced pilot training, the BAE Hawk T1. The Hawks have an uprated engine and a modification to enable smoke to be generated; diesel is mixed with a coloured dye and ejected into the jet exhaust to produce red, white or blue smoke. Squadron Leader David Montenegro, said: “Ever since the team’s first season in 1965, the Red Arrows have performed on a global scale. The team, flying British-built aircraft, has displayed to millions of people in more than 55 countries around the world.” “Indeed, our colourful, dynamic aerial displays of precision, formation aerobatics; together with the associated events on the ground are a vivid showcase of British engineering, teamwork and creativity.” The Red Arrows departed their base in the UK on 29th September before visiting Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam and China in October and the first week of November. The Hua Hin fly-past and display, the only Tour destination in Thailand, is scheduled for Friday 11th November. India, Oman, Bahrain, UAE, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait are destinations to follow before returning to base on 1st December.

Marine Rescue & Aid Project

New Fresh Market for Hua Hin The Governor of Prachuab Khirikhan Dr. Thawee Narissiri, Hua Hin mayor Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, Bunthavorn Hua Hin and Hua Hin Hub have launched a project to launch the Saner Suk Hua Hin Fresh Market, where local products and Thai fruits are sold at a reasonable price. The market, located on a green space at Bunthavorn Hua Hin, is a centre for local food and fresh fruit, namely durian from Pa La-u, organic cabbages, tomatoes and cucumber, as well as dried seafood, and handicraft products made by the local people. All the products have been brought by Hua Hin Hub Co. Ltd. The sellers are Hua Hin locals who set up over 50 selling booths in the market. The aim of the sellers is to boost tourism of the city and promote traditional culture to Thai and foreign visitors who come to Hua Hin during public holidays or on weekend. The Saner Suk Hua Hin Fresh Market is now open on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of this year.

Jeerawat Phramanee, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of Hua Hin Municipality has taken part in a project on marine rescue and aid and marine rescue for kids. R.A. Chettha Jaipiem from Klai Kangwon Palace delivered a speech to many participants from Hua Hin organisations, including the Rotary Club of Hua Hin, Sawan Hua Hin Dhamma Sathan Foundation, the

The Governor said that the fresh market was a cooperative project between private and public sectors in terms of distributing local goods and products to customers. Bunthavorn allows local people to sell their products without charging them to encourage the sellers to reduce the prices, added the governor. The Hub Hua Hin manager who supports this project also said that she would like to support local people who have small and medium businesses to sell products that reflect the cultural root of the beachfront city so that visitors realise how priceless local culture is. The Hub Hua Hin is finding more areas in the city to set up more fresh markets, as there are around 50 local sellers working with it. If hotels or companies have empty spaces for sellers to use, they can contact the Hub Hua Hin at any time. Doing so will promote the trademark of Hua Hin fresh markets for Thais and foreigners.

Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Hua Hin Municipal School. The project included demonstrations of land and marine rescue for those affected by natural disasters from 13th to 19th 19 October. The aim was to promote the image of Hua Hin as a safe city and create more confidence amongst Thai and foreign visitors.

Thailand Begins Mourning the National Loss

As Thailand has now entered a one year official period of mourning, there has probably never been a more important time to be culturally sensitive and empathetic towards those around you Perhaps as a foreigner, you may not personally feel sad or shocked, depending on the length of time you’ve spent here and on the connections you’ve made with Thai people. But Thai people feel very emotional right now, so please behave accordingly. Find simple words to show Thai people that you understand their grief and sorrow; be sensitive, informed, and compassionate. Hua Hin has enjoyed a special relationship with the royal family over decades which means an even deeper sense of loss at our local level. Information and advice will continue to be offered by government agencies and others at a national and local level. Take the time to listen and accept some of the disruptions and restrictions that may apply. All public transportation, banks, hospitals and other public services will be operating as usual. Thailand remains open for business, including for tourists, but a more subdued and perhaps sombre mood now prevails especially during the early weeks and months of the mourning period. If you know of any visitors that have just arrived or who are arriving soon, spread the word that respect matters!

Some recommendations to acknowledge the mourning period and what you may expect. Clothing: The Thai government has suggested that black clothes be worn for a month although this cannot be mandatory (some people might wear white). In practice visitors should consider not wearing any vivid colours; dark clothes are OK, but avoid clothing that may be considered too revealing or provocative. This is may be no different from how you would dress at a

similar time of remembrance in your home country. Social Events: Loud music or other signs that there’s a party happening will be frowned on, especially during this month. Keep your celebration low-key and quiet. Although there will be cancellations of various festivals, Thai people will still be gathering for weddings, birthdays and other important events but these usually raucous and noisy happenings will become noticeably restrained. Entertainment Venues: There have been no changes officially made to the operating hours of restaurants, cinemas, shopping centres or bars or added restrictions to the sale of alcohol. Individually business owners may have chosen to make their own changes in recognition the mourning period and stop playing loud music, including live performances or your favourite football match may not be screened. Again the sombre mood of the nation prevails, especially during this month. Buddhist Commemorative Events: Expect to come across gatherings of Thai people at both official and unofficial levels which will include Buddhist rites and ceremonies. These gatherings may even be disruptive to traffic and public transport. Show patience, be undemanding and accept this is an essential way for Thai people to show their condolences. Taking photos or videos is unlikely to be acceptable. Stay quiet, unobtrusive and don’t be disruptive in any way. Lèse-majesté Laws: Please be aware that the government enforces Thailand’s strict laws which prohibit criticism of the royal family, including succession plans. Expect some increased sensitivity at both official and individual levels, including offensive

reactions to images of the royal family. Don’t join in discussions about the succession to the throne; let’s just see what happens. Although we may be affected as the situation evolves, it’s not really a foreigner’s business. Best not to comment, including on internet discussion groups or the social media on political issues but especially matters related to the royal family. Apologise: If you ever feel that Thai people are offended or feel upset by your behaviour, no matter how unintended that offence has been, recognise that you have made a mistake, apologise and show humility. Thai people will understand that foreigners do not always know what is correct and mistakes will be made, but showing indifference, being defensive or aggressive is not the answer.

HUA HIN TODAY, November 2016

Remember that for most Thai people, the King’s reign has always been a feature of their daily lives. The current times are without precedent, so some confusion and uncertainty is being experienced by everyone. Be ready to offer your condolences to Thai people around you, to pay respect to their grief. Try to understand the bond that connects them to their king, so that you may feel it too and they will be grateful for your understanding and compassion. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has asked that members of the public stay updated via media announcements and notices from the Bureau of the Royal Household as well as the Royal Thai Government about any changes. This includes changes affecting travel plans. The TAT has also asked tourists and visitors for their understanding and patience should they experience delays or changes.

8 Thailand Economics 4.0; What Do You Need to Know? The Thai government is working hard to promote “Thailand 4.0,” a new economic model, aimed at pulling Thailand out of the middle-income trap, and developing it as a high-income country.

If you don’t know what is “Thailand 4.0”, don’t blame yourself. A survey by the Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting showed that slightly more than half of the businesses knew little about Thailand 4.0. Why Thailand 4.0? In the first model, “Thailand 1.0,” emphasis was placed on the agricultural sector. The second model, “Thailand 2.0,” focused on light industries, which helped upgrade the country’s economy from the lowincome to middle-income status. In the third model, “Thailand 3.0,” the country is currently emphasising heavy industries for continued economic growth. During this period, Thailand has become stuck in the middle-income trap and faces disparities and imbalanced development. What is the middle-income trap ? The “middle-income trap,” is a situation in which a country’s growth slows after having reached the middle-income levels.

Middle-income countries like Thailand are squeezed between their low-wage competitors that dominate the mature industries on one side and the rich-country innovators that dominate industries of rapid technological change on the other side. In other words, Thailand is moving on from a country with abundant cheap, unskilled labour to an innovation “value-based economy” to climb to the next step of the ladder. Thailand 4.0, towards a value-based economy Thailand 4.0 focuses on a “value-based economy,” as the country needs to deal effectively with disparities and the imbalance between the environment and society. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha explained that Thailand 4.0 has three elements, which mark a significant change in the country’s economy and production. 1. Become a high-income nation The first element aims to enhance the country’s standing to become a highincome nation through developing it as a knowledge-based economy with an emphasis on research and development, science and technology, creative thinking, and innovation. 2. Move toward an inclusive society In the second element, Thailand will move toward an “inclusive society” with equitable

Minimum Wage to Rise by 5THB-10THB in 69 Thai Provinces

Minimum wages will rise to between 305 THB and 310 THB per day in 69 provinces from the current nationwide rate of 300 THB, effective from Jan. 1, 2017 Labour Ministry permanent secretary ML Puntrik Smiti said after chairing a meeting of the tripartite Central Wage Committee yesterday that the meeting approved rises of the minimum daily wage next year in 69 provinces, while the minimum in the other eight provinces will remain at Bt300. The wage in seven provinces – Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Phuket – will rise by 10 THB, while that in 13

provinces will increase by 8 THB, and in 49 provinces by 5 THB. The committee will submit its resolution to the Labour Ministry, which will forward it to the Cabinet. Chen Namchaisiri, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said the organization agreed that increases in the minimum wages should vary in each province. He said the proposed increases would probably be acceptable by employers in principle, but it needed to be considered whether the timing is suitable as the economic recovery is not yet certain. Although small and medium enterprises may be affected, overall employers would be able to adjust to the new figures. There have been no increases in the past three years. Wanlop Kingchansilp, President of the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Business, said the new rates were based on economic data. Sombat Noiwa, an employees’ representative on the Central Wage Committee, said he would like the minimum wage to go up in all 77 provinces but the new figures were acceptable. – The Nation

The Revenue Department of Thailand has proposed that the Finance Ministry keep the value-added tax (VAT) rate at 7 percent for another year until the end of September 2017. Revenue Department chief Prasong Poonthaneat said that the government, in the past year, has meted out various packages to help grassroots people who have been hard hit by drought while exports are contracting due to global economic slowdown. Increasing VAT rate from 7 to 10 percent will add more of a burden on the consumers and increase the production costs of business operators, he noted.

access to the fruits of prosperity and development.

Citing the slow economic recovery and impacts on business operators and the public if VAT is adjusted up; Mr Prasong pointed out that increasing VAT rate by just one percent will raise VAT revenue to 100 billion THB from 7 billion BHT annually. As for the collection of revenue taxes for 2016 fiscal year, he predicted that the collection would fall short of the adjusted target of 1.75 trillion THB by 140 billion THB due to substantial drop, about 100 billion THB, in petroleum taxes because of low oil prices. 9 The Art of Watercolour

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has supported a watercolour exhibition in Hua Hin featuring works by artists from more than 50 countries. The “Hua Hin BluPort World Watercolor Arts Biennale 2016 Thailand” was organised by the International Watercolour Society (IWS), founded in 2012 to promote the watercolour art form and to preserving and promote painting techniques. The society has 80 branches around the world and thousands of members. There were over 200 paintings on display and many of these were for sale with some of the money raised going to charity. Many of the pictures on display feature wellknown local sites such as Hua Hin’s famous railway station, and scenes from the fishing village.

Many artists visited Hua Hin to contribute to the exhibition and to talk about their work. These include local artist Tawee Kesangam, whose work is much soughtafter. The town was chosen as it a cultural hub with a lively local art scene. It is hoped that the World Watercolor Arts Biennale 2016 will help to enhance Hua Hin’s artistic reputation internationally and even encourage artistically minded tourists to visit and be inspired by the sights and scenery of Thailand. Also on display was an artwork made by 15 international artists using watercolour to create one of the world’s largest

watercolour paintings at nearly 12 metres long and 1.2 metres in height. This work was exhibited along with the 200 paintings at the Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall.

The exhibition was the result of the collaborations between IWS, TAT, the newly-opened Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort.

Tae Kwon Do – It’s Not Thai Kwon Do Thailand’s international performances on the international Taekwondo stage have provided a major impetus for the sport’s growth in the country. After becoming an Olympic Games sport for the first time in 2000, Yaowapa Boorapolchai winning a bronze medalist in the women’s under 49 kg event at the 2004 Summer Olympics was a remarkable achievement. At the 2014 Asian Games Chanatip Sonkham took gold with a decisive 10-3 victory over China’s Li Zhaoyi in the 49 kg final. Taekwondo is a martial arts discipline which originated in Korea and is based on the meaning of these three Korean words: Tae = kick; Kwon = punch and Do = “the way or the discipline”. The naive may see a Thailand connection by mispronouncing ‘Tae’ as ‘Thai’. This word should be pronounced as ‘Tay’ (as in play), so the name of this combative sport is not related to Thailand. However Taekwondo is widely practiced in Thailand with a rapidly growing following.

More recently Thailand again achieved Olympics honours as the 2016 games with Tawin Hanprab winning silver for the men’s 58 kg men’s event and Panipak Wongpattanakit winning bronze in the women’s 49kg event. Taekwondo’s introduction to Thailand can be traced back to the early 1970’s when Korean experts were sent around the world to develop and teach Taekwondo on an international scale. This followed the sport’s birth in 1955 in Korea.

Our introduction to Taekwondo meant a visit to Pranburi where Frenchman JeanPierre Berrie was instructing and training a very eager group of students in his newly established BJP Elite Academy or Hansoo Pranburi. Elite is not overstating the standard of instruction with Jean-Pierre as a former French champion and with his sons Alexandre and Benjamin also achieving that recognition being involved in showing students how. All teachers are graduates of the Kukkiwon-The World Taekwondo Federation. Hansoo Pranburi has instruction from Friday to Sunday each week for all ages and skill level. Otherwise Hansoo Pattaya takes up Jean-Pierre’s time on other weekdays as the largest Taekwondo academy in Chonburi. The youngest participant during our visit was a 3 year old girl also proudly wearing the two-piece white uniform or ‘dobok’. She seemed undaunted by the instructions with Korean words as the authentic way to convey the meaning of the moves. The children of police and military officers were

prominent amongst the trainees; all aiming for the coveted black belt status which can be achieved after three years instruction and dedication. It may seem somewhat incongruous that a native of Bordeaux, France is excelling in the instruction of a Korean martial art in Pranburi Thailand, although Jean-Pierre has been living in Thailand for around 20 years. He still commutes to his home country frequently, particularly as his sons gain more international recognition in their sport in Europe. Meanwhile the opportunity to receive the highest level of Taekwondo instruction locally provides a big incentive to become yet another champion of this rapidly expanding sport in Thailand. 10 Vana Nava’s New General Manager; He’s All About Water

If surfing, scuba diving, yachting and Water Park Management dominate your interests, there’s one very clear theme and it’s all about water! Tim Mow hails from San Diego in California and entered the amusement industry in 1986 as a summer holiday lifeguard at Oasis Water Resort in Palm Springs. His resume includes working through operational ranks to take on roles in park operations, maintenance and development in facilities such as: Raging Waters, San Dimas, Wild Rivers, Irvine, and Knott’s Soak City USA, San Diego, all in California. He has also been the Director of Engineering at Wild Wadi Waterpark in Dubai for the five years prior to joining Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi in 2009 as Assistant Park Manager. Tim has overseen that waterpark’s construction from the ground-up, including working on ride design and installation, as well as innovative technology upgrades.

Tim’s been a Thailand visitor for many years and taking on the position at Vana Nava has allowed him to combine his waterpark expertise with a love of Thai culture and just one more thing; leaving the extensive Arabian desert sands behind. One of the possible new products being considered for Vana Nava, which is popular amongst the patrons in the UAE is the burkini (or burqini). This is a type of swimsuit for women; the suit covers the whole body except the face, the hands and the feet, while being light enough for swimming. The design is intended to accord with Islamic traditions of modest dress. Tim figures that the tendency for Thai people to remain covered to avoid sun exposure and tanning could make this a top-seller at Vana Nava.

At 6’6” (or 198 cm) Tim towers over most locals. He described going to a shop in Pranburi where the locals were somewhat overawed; “they looked at me as if I was some sort of alien” he quipped. Tim has been joined in Hua Hin by his wife Salina who he met and married in the UAE. Tim says “She is Egyptian but has never been to Egypt!” Salina is apparently a fitness and health aficionado, who has relished the facilities at True Arena. Away from the world of waterparks, Tim looks for the open ocean with a 53 foot Jeanneau cruising yacht currently birthed in Phuket. He also admitted that some time

Vana Nava’s second year anniversary celebrations have been put on hold during the current period of mourning in Thailand, but when the time is right Vana Nava will be letting everyone know. However the usual thrills and spills are being experienced at the park. We welcome Tim and his wife to the Hua Hin community in the knowledge that whilst the water is often on his mind; he’s certainly not “wet behind the ears”!

Images of Springfield’s “Tranquil” Beach Most tourists that stay in Hua Hin or ChaAm and many long stayers are oblivious to the existence of Springfield’s “Tranquil” Beach. It is described as “tranquil” since it is far away from the maddening crowds of its big brother beaches in Hua Hin and Cha-Am. This is the beach to visit to “chill out” away from it all, have a soothing beach side massage and sample fresh seafood dishes with sand under your feet and watch the world go by. Getting to this hideaway beach is straight forward. Just follow the directions from our map.

There is road about 1km long with easy free parking. All of the many beach side bars and restaurants are great, most bars and restaurants offer refreshingly cool drinks and a superb range of food to suit all tastes from Thai to International.

For the more adventurous, you can decide to walk either north towards Cha-Am or south towards Hua Hin, along the sandy beach stopping on the way for refreshments. For me, I just like to chill. After the end of a very hard day on this tranquil beach, why not stop for a soothing massage followed by a drink or two prior to having an exquisite and not expensive evening meal as Anne and Ralf

from Germany are going to do later in the evening. In summary, if you have never been fortunate enough to try out Springfield’s “Tranquil” beach during your holiday, then I reckon that you are missing out. Going there just for one day will give you a different perspective on your holiday and something that you will remember very fondly for a long time to come.

Asia Pacific destinations welcomed almost 577 million international visitors during calendar year 2015 an increase of 24 million arrivals compared to the previous year. The figures are contained in the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual Tourism Monitor 2016 Final Edition. Japan, Chile, Thailand and Sri Lanka are the other nations achieving top five ranking. Japan was the dominant destination by annual increase in absolute numbers, adding more than 6.3 million foreign arrivals to its inbound count. A research team from Naraesuan University has successfully extracted chemicals from the latex of a Rak plant (Calotropis gigantea) which are capable of inhibiting the function of a protein which is essential for the growth of cancerous cells, said Dr Supawadee Pahera, a lecturer at the faculty of pharmacy of the university. She added that the chemicals were found to be capable of resisting H1N1 flu virus in the early stage of infection and stopping enzyme which causes tissue inflammation. Dr Supawadee said that this research work would pave the way for the search of new medicines for the treatment of certain ailments. The research work has been patented and also published in three international academic publications, she said, adding that the university recently

13 Re-Heating Leftovers–Be Cautious and Aware of the Hazards Occasionally, we all have leftovers. As convenient as it is to pan-fry one juicy chicken breast on a hectic weeknight, sometimes a casserole, a pasta dish, or soup; may be meals that weren’t necessarily created with single dinners in mind. When dishes are intended to enjoy for more than one meal, the microwave becomes a reliable companion throughout the week. However reheating certain items can be a health hazard. Certain cooked ingredients, if reheated (particularly after being stored improperly), can actually make you physically ill. It’s important to be aware of the fact that heating foods changes their chemical structure, and for some ingredients, these changes that are spurred by temperature shifts can make the food incompatible with the human digestive system. So if you’re all about the leftovers, play it safe and avoid warming up these eight common foods a second time:

quantity of nitrates, which provide vital nutrients our bodies need to function. When we eat certain vegetables raw, something magical happens in the body that turns those good-for-you nitrates into nitrites. Nitrates don’t become a problem until the heating process activates them, prompting them to release poisonous carcinogenic effects when the body processes them. Every time you reheat spinach or other veggies that are rich in nitrates, they become increasingly toxic.

Potatoes

Spinach

Sautéed too much spinach for a quick and nutritious side dish at dinner? If you can’t eat it all right after it’s cooked, it’s best to just toss it or eat the leftovers cold (maybe stir them into a pasta salad). To avoid food waste in the future, aim to cook only what you need for the meal at hand. Spinach contains a high

Here’s the deal on those spuds. When cooked potatoes are left out at room temperature or warmed up for a second time, they can take a toxic turn for the worst. Why? Warm temperatures promote the growth of the rare bacteria, botulism, that is commonly found in potatoes. If you can’t bear throwing leftovers away, the best solution is to refrigerate uneaten cooked potatoes immediately. Dont pull them from the oven and let them stand for an hour or so until they reach room temp, and then pack them away. If you find yourself with quite a few leftovers, store the potatoes in multiple plastic containers and refrigerate promptly so that they cool down faster.

Celery and Carrots

The same rules outlined above for spinach likewise apply to celery and carrots. When possible, it’s safer to take celery and/or carrots out of a dish before reheating it.

Rice

Beets

We all know how good beets are, both in their flavour and nutritional benefits. But beets, like celery, spinach, and carrots, are rich in nitrates. Your safest bet for beets is to only cook what you think you’ll actually eat in one sitting, or plan to eat them cold (like on salads and such).

Eggs

Same deal as the potatoes here, don’t leave rice out at room temperature after it’s cooked. If stored incorrectly, cooked rice can develop bacterial spores that may produce poisons that cause intense physical illness. These spores multiply faster at room temperature than in the fridge. To avoid food poisoning or other digestive upset, make sure those fluffy grains are stored in the fridge in an airtight container right after cooking.

A fantastic protein source for sure, cooked eggs can be a source of serious sickness when left at or re-exposed to higher temperatures. Whether boiled or scrambled, reheating eggs can be destructive to your digestive system. Not to mention… reheated rubbery eggs are kind of gross anyway. Just don’t.

Chicken

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are probably the most apt to make you ill of the items on this list, largely because of how vulnerable they are to microorganisms. When eating cooked mushrooms, it ’s best to eat them immediately after they’re prepared. And if you plan to eat on them again the next day, make sure you eat them cold from the refrigerator because reheating mushrooms can be bad news for your belly.

Another favorite protein source and dinner staple, chicken is kind of tricky when it comes to leftovers. The protein in chicken starts to deteriorate and causes digestive problems when it goes from cold to hot the second time around. A general rule of thumb if you want to enjoy leftover chicken warm is to reheat it in the microwave, a skillet, or the oven only one time after the original preparation. You also need to make sure it’s hot–as in completely hot through and through to the center of the piece of chicken, and eaten right away. The important takeaway here is that it never hurts to err towards the side of caution when it comes to what we’re putting into our bodies. And that includes being aware that some foods have a greater potential for toxicity when reheated than others.

Talking About Trans Fat: What You Need to Know There are two sources of trans fat, also known as trans fatty acids: Trans fat formed naturally – this type of trans fat is produced in the gut of some grazing animals. That’s why small quantities of trans fat can be found in animal products like meat, milk, and milk products. Trans fat formed during food processing – this type of trans fat is created when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil (a process called hydrogenation) to make it more solid. Partially hydrogenated oils are used by food manufacturers to improve the texture, shelf life, and flavour stability of foods. Eating trans fat raises the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol in the blood. An elevated LDL blood cholesterol level can increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Therefore, you should keep your intake of trans fat as low as possible.

Fats in Your Diet Limiting trans fats is one component of a healthful diet that also includes limiting saturated fat and dietary cholesterol.

Ready-to-use frostings Refrigerated dough products (such as biscuits and cinnamon rolls) Snack foods (such as microwave popcorn) Vegetable shortenings and stick margarines

Dietary fats are found in both plant and animal foods. Fat is a major source of energy for the body and aids in the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fat is also important for proper growth, development, and maintenance of good health.

Choose Your Fats Wisely

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults consume no more than approximately one third of their calories from fat to reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases (such as cardiovascular disease), while providing for adequate intake of essential nutrients.

Keep trans fat consumption as low as possible by limiting foods that contain trans fats formed during food

Infants and toddlers up to two years of age have the highest energy needs per unit of body weight of any age group. Fats are an important source of calories and nutrients for these youngsters.

Look for partially hydrogenated oils, a source of trans fat, on the ingredient list on a food package. Note: The Nutrition Facts label can state 0 grams of trans fat if the food product contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving. Thus, if a product contains partially hydrogenated oils, then it might contain small amounts of trans fat even if the label says 0 grams of trans fat.

As a food ingredient, fat provides flavour, consistency, and stability – and helps you feel full. Where’s the Trans Fat? Trans fat can be found in many of the same foods as saturated fat. These can include: Coffee creamer Crackers, cookies, cakes, frozen pies, and other baked goods Fast food Frozen pizza

Use the Nutrition Facts Label as your tool for reducing trans fat in your diet – which may help decrease your risk of developing cardiovascular disease!

processing. Trans fat has no percent Daily Value (%DV), so use the amount of grams (g) as your guide.

Choose lean cuts of meat and skinless poultry. Switch from stick margarine to soft margarine (liquid, tub, or spray). Limit packaged snack foods and commercially prepared (ready-made) baked goods.

Substitute fat-free (skim) or low-fat (1%) milk and milk products (such as yogurt and cheese) or fortified soy beverages for full-fat (whole) milk and milk products. Get plenty of foods that are naturally low in fat and high in dietary fiber, such as whole grains, beans, peas, fruits, and vegetables. Cook and bake with liquid oils (like canola or olive oil) instead of solid fats (like shortening, butter, or lard). Try baking, steaming, grilling, or broiling. These cooking methods do not add extra fat. U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Suppression of Urine, Harm That You May Not Realise If you are one of those people with a frequent desire to urinate, but it passes in small quantities with pain either at your sexual organs, or in the region of the bladder, you may have a problem.

These are the indications of cystitis, with suppression of urine being the main cause. Cystitis can occur to both males and females, and in all ages. But importantly, without proper treatment, it may have more negative consequences. Our body has three main mechanisms to excrete waste substances from our body; perspiration, defecations, and urination. Excreted body wastes usually consist of excess substances that our body does not need, including bacteria. Frequently suppression of urine or doing so for long periods of time retain substances, including bacteria. This may lead to bacteria multiplying, causing more severe disease; such as pyelitis, acute kidney failure, or blood poisoning that may cost your life. Although cystitis can occur to both male and female, and in all ages, it is more likely to occur for women. The reason for that is because a woman’s body has a urinary tract that is only 4-5 centimetres in length and it is closer to the anus than men, causing it to be easier to get infected.

In addition to suppressing your urine, drinking insufficient amounts of water is also another cause of cystitis. When our body lacks water, it will extract water from other part of our body, causing the urine to be richer and subdue the desire to urinate. The result is that waste substances remain in our body for a longer period of time. A diagnosis by a urine analysis in the event of cystitis, would show WBC > 5-10 cells/HPF and usually show a higher rate of bacteria in urine than normal. An initial treatment after early detection or having the disease for the first time, is to change behaviour by drinking water more often and in a greater quantity. More importantly, do not suppress your urine and go to the bathroom every time you desire to urinate. However, if such changes of behaviour do not improve symptoms, it is suggested that you meet with the doctor to get a complete treatment. Supplied by Health Lab Hua Hin

16 I Just Had The Rolls Royce of Facials!

You haven’t experienced pampering until you’ve experienced the Black Pearl 24k Gold Facial! I have been following the craze of gold facials after celebs like Ellie Goulding, Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz all started raving about the incredible results they were getting from the luxury facials, but didn’t think that a normal pleb like me would ever have the chance to experience something like it. Well, let me tell you ladies it is now possible –the gold facial has come to South Africa and I couldn’t be more excited! Last week I got the chance to visit the oh-soincredible Delaire Graff spa in Stellenbosch to experience the Black Pearl 24K Gold Cleopatra Facial and trust me when I say, I have never experienced anything quite like it. Of course, the fact that this facial uses gold to treat clients’ skin is super cool but it’s not just about the ‘wow’ factor of having gold on your face – the facial actually works… like a bomb!

Last week I realised that Cleopatra had it all right! It is well documented that the former queen of Egypt had a bit of an ostentatious streak and amongst other things, loved to sleep with gold on her face. The ancient Egyptians used gold as so much more than just adornment; the precious metal was also used as a form of therapy for the skin, thanks to its curing and antibacterial properties. Well, now after experiencing a gold facial for myself, I can categorically tell you that the Egyptians had the right idea.

HUA HIN TODAY, November 2016

After an hour and a half in the treatment room with my therapist, I sat up to find that my skin felt like a million bucks. My skin was beautifully plumped, moisturised up the whazoo and glowing like never before. I couldn’t stop staring at myself in the mirror and stroking my face and was even more pleasantly surprised when the results lasted a good few days afterwards. If you there was ever a Rolls Royce of facials then this would be it. The Black Pearl 24k Gold

Cleopatra Facial is the perfect facial for a bride to get before her wedding and, if you’re really feeling flush, before any other special occasion where you want to look great in pictures. This unique facial is said to have incredible anti-aging effects and also improves blood circulation, stimulates metabolism, energises the skin and aids in natural healing, leaving your skin tightened and with a brighter complexion. The facial I had at Delaire Graff involved multiple steps using the Black Pearl range of products, a variety of semi-precious healing stones, and microdermabrasion. Each step was a treat in itself and even the extraction process felt gentle! There’s no steam in this facial, as Delaire Graaf feels it can be quite jarring to the skin and instead the skin is left to heal itself during the mask stage. The 24K gold Cleopatra Mask is obviously the hero of this 1.5 hour facial and I loved the feeling of the mask being removed from my skin – the mask is gently removed with a metallic stone, leaving behind remnants of gold flakes on your skin. These flakes are then massaged into the skin to leave your skin feeling ultra soft and hydrated. The powerful mask contains a high concentration of active ingredients which includes hyaluronic acid which is said to be great for boosting hydration and combating the signs of aging.

17 World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier Wins his Fourth title The French Volkswagen driver Sebastien Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia sealed the 2016 championship with victory in Rally Spain with two rounds still remaining in the season, adding to their titles from the preceding three years.

It means Ogier equals Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Makinen as a four-time title winner, with only nine-time champion Sebastien Loeb having won more. Talking about how his latest title feels in comparison with previous ones in an interview on official WRC website, he said: “You don’t want to compare them.

There were always some differences, but they are always so enjoyable and always meaning a lot for me, even if they happen in different conditions. This year, once again, we had to fight hard to get it and I’m as proud of this one as the others.” “Of course, you always feel the first one a bit stronger because you reach your goal, your dream, but this one has the same value.” Twelve months ago, Ogier had crashed out of the Duesaigues Power Stage in Rally Spain while on course for an easy win, but this time he made sure to cross the line to put himself in the history books. “Before the final stage I had it a bit in my mind and I really extra concentrated myself before the start to be awake,” he admitted. “I know that stage perfectly and if I was really concentrated there was no reason to make a mistake. Last year I was a bit too relaxed maybe on this one.” Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets was full of praise for the champions: “Congratulations to

Action Plan Aims to Cut Road Carnage

Deadly highway blackspots, speed limits and vehicle safety systems are the key targets of a new national action plan designed to curb road deaths. The Transport Ministry has announced a comprehensive road safety plan in a bid to reduce the road toll – the world’s second highest per capita – and stem an estimated 200 billion THB in annual economic losses. Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning director Chaiwat Tongkamkoon said the plan was drawn up in collaboration with related agencies and will be implemented between now and next year. Mr Chaiwat said the plan focuses on five measures: 1. managing traffic information and accidents; 2. improving road design; 3. raising vehicle safety standards; 4. encouraging road users to drive safely; and 5. enhancing emergency responses. Existing transport safety centres will become coordination and management centres to share information about road accidents. They will be tasked with formulating policies to address road safety. Crash investigators will be assigned to examine areas which are prone to deadly accidents and determine the causes. Road designs will be examined and improved to enhance safety. This includes rest areas for trucks and buses, installation of safety barriers and improving railway crossings. Inter-provincial passenger vans will be equipped with cameras, speed monitoring devices and an anti-distraction system. Child car seats will be made mandatory and motorcycles will be equipped with speed limiters.

Varying speed limits will be imposed on urban roads, rural roads, highways and express-ways. Local administration organisations will determine speed limits in areas under their jurisdictions. Operators of the passenger buses and vans will also be asked to buy additional insurance to cover road accident victims. A co-payment system is likely to be introduced to ensure the operators’ cooperation. Mr Chaiwat said there were 69,371 road accidents last year, a 10 per cent increase from the year before. A total of 6,268 people were killed and 18,160 injured. Speed is the top cause of road accidents, accounting for 72.7% of all crashes, followed by changing lanes in an unsafe manner (8.89%) and driver fatigue (4.98%). According to the latest World Health Organisation survey, Thailand has the second-highest number of road deaths per capita. The country also has the highest motorcycle death rate, with 26.3 killed from every 100,000 people. On average, between one and two people are killed every hour. The economic damage is estimated at B200 billion a year, or about 1.7% of GDP. The plan was unveiled after Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith revealed the government was planning tougher drink-driving laws.

Sebastien and Julien on this fantastic success. Winning the world championship title four years in a row is proof of their outstanding ability. They can rightly be proud of themselves, and of the team that made this possible.” The Manufacturers’ Championship will be decided in one of the two rallies still to come with Volkswagen leading with 62 points from Hyundai.

New-Vehicle Sales Satisfaction in Thailand On The Rise With declining new-vehicle sales in Thailand, automotive dealers are paying closer attention to their customers, which is resulting in higher customer satisfaction with the new-vehicle sales experience, according to the J.D. Power 2016 Thailand Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study, SM mass market segment.

additional freebies from their dealer, including accessories (93%); first year of auto insurance (86%); and vehicle service packages (18%). Despite receiving discounts and more freebies, 9% of customers say they paid more than expected for their vehicle,a sharp increase from 2% in 2014.

As the automotive industry in Thailand suffers its fourth consecutive year of declining sales, automotive dealers are working even harder as they compete for business from a smaller pool of buyers and customers are appreciating the extra attention they are getting from the dealership, as overall satisfaction with the sales process improves to 811 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2016 from 801 in 2015.

“To lift satisfaction levels even higher, salespeople who are able to demonstrate how the vehicle is a value-for-money product can help steer customers away from being fixated on the price,” saidSatrabhaya.

Furthermore, the proportion of delighted customers—those who rate their overall purchase experience 10 (on a 10-point scale)—increases to 22% from 8% a year ago. “Dealers overall are doing a great job of enhancing the sales process to delight customers, and they must remain committed to this cause,” said Siros Satrabhaya, country manager at J.D. Power Thailand. “Focusing on price cuts and giveaways to attract customers is not sustainable in the long run. Instead, dealers must work on developing personal connections with their customers so that when the market picks up, they will be better positioned to gain from customers’ repurchase and recommendation activities.” Customers are increasingly driving a harder bargain, with their pre-shopping research focusing on learning where to get the best deal. The study finds that 58% of customers are using the internet to research their new-vehicle purchase, and two of the three most often searched topics are related to getting the best deal: vehicle pricing (78%); product brochures (60%); and promotions (52%). Additionally, 51% of all customers indicate receiving discounts and getting

“Understanding their customers, their family profile and their usage needs, along with providing relevant comparisons with competing models are some effective ways to achieve that.” Now in its 17th year, the study examines six factors that contribute to overall customer satisfaction with their new-vehicle purchase experience in the mass market segment. In order of impact on overall sales satisfaction, those factors are delivery process (19%); dealer facility (19%); sales initiation (17%); deal (16%); delivery timing (15%); and salesperson (15%).

20 Some Offbeat Days To Celebrate in November It’s a bit unusual to have a designated month for one style of cuisine; November is known as Turkey Month. It might be a great excuse to roast dinners all the trimmings, though i n Thailand that may not be all that easy, but there are plenty of unusual holidays to fill your November days with celebration. NOVEMBER 4TH: KING TUT DAY

No, this day does not commemorate the great Egyptian king’s birthday. On this day in 1922, British archeologist Howard Carter and his crew discovered the entrance to King Tut’s tomb. This monumental discovery was one of the greatest archaeological achievements of the 20thcentury, and remains a huge attraction. The least we can do is take a day to honour it.

NOVEMBER 18TH: USELESS STUFF DAY

Your Country’s National Day If you are not Thai then you will probably want to acknowledge your home country’s National Day in one way or another. Try to find a restaurant featuring the cuisine and traditional activities familiar to you. In November here are four prominent National Days.

November 9th Cambodia Independence Day

NOVEMBER 5TH: GUY FAWKES DAY

Although the advertising industry works terribly hard to convince us that we never quite have enough stuff, many of us probably use way more stuff than we need. Take the day to reflect on exactly which kinds of stuff are excessive in your day-to-day life, and how you might reduce using said stuff. Or at least clear room for all the new stuff you’ll be getting soon for the holidays.

NOVEMBER 19TH: WORLD TOILET DAY

The eponymous man behind the infamous “Gunpowder Plot” planned to blow up Britain’s Parliament in 1605, spawning annual bonfire celebrations, effigies, and creepy masks for centuries to come. It was Parliament that declared November 5th as a day of celebration to commemorate their foiling of Fawkes and company’s plot, but it’s Fawkes’ mischievous spirit that pervades the festivities.

Later in the day, there is a gala parade held in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, with colorful floats and marching bands.

November 18th Latvia Independence Day

NOVEMBER 6TH: NATIONAL SAXOPHONE DAY

Brass on the outside, woodwind on the inside, the saxophone has created sweet, sweet baby-making jams for more than 150 years. Invented in 1846 by Belgian instrument-maker Adolphe Sax, the saxophone has since become a staple of both modern jazz and classical compositions.

NOVEMBER 13TH: WORLD KINDNESS DAY

Cambodia was a French protectorate for 90 years before it gained independence from France on November 9th, 1953. The principal celebrations are held in the capital city of Phnom Penh, beginning with a morning ceremony at Independence Monument, usually with the King of Cambodia in attendance.

A holiday devoted to the John, the Pot, the Latrine, the Porcelain God? Sounds like the brainchild of a group of 5th graders. In fact, it’s an international event dedicated to destigmatizing toilets and address the challenges of global sanitation. Billions of people in the world do not have proper access to toilets, but also that in addition to being vital to life, toilets can be “fun and sexy.”

NOVEMBER 19TH: INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY

You may be hard-pressed to find anyone who believes men are internationally underrepresented, but someone still deemed the male gender worthy of a worldwide holiday. The theme of this year’s men’s day is health, more specifically “Helping Men and Boys Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier Lives.” We can’t argue with that!

Latvian Independence Day commemorates declaration of independence of the Republic of Latvia from German and Russian occupation on November 18, 1918 after the end of the First World War. The People’s Council of Latvia proclaimed independence in the building that today houses the National Theatre in Rīga. Many festive events take place through the country on Latvia’s National Day, including a nationally televised address to the people by the President of the Republic of Latvia. In recent years this speech is given before large crowds in the square by the Freedom Monument in Rīga.

November 22ndLebanon Independence Day

NOVEMBER 28TH: RED PLANET DAY

Founded in 1998 by an organization called the World Kindness Movement, this international holiday encourages everyone to look deep into their hearts past religion, race, and other differences to do something nice for their neighbors and/or humankind.

Lebanon gained independence on 22 November 1943. The day is celebrated to commemorate the liberation of Lebanon from the French Mandate.

NOVEMBER 15TH: CLEAN OUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR DAY

The fourth planet from the sun, and home to a future dystopian civilization according to Total Recall, gets its own day of honour in November. Plot out your dream Mars colony, wear all red, or perhaps read stories of the Roman God of War—whatever Red Planet activity suits your fancy!

NOVEMBER 29TH: NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE DAY

Or as we like to call it, “Discover the science project you didn’t know you had growing in your refrigerator Day.”

Despite its close association with cowboys and honky tonk bars, the square dance actually originated in Europe in the 17th century. However, the United States has since taken over its cultural reins, so much so that 19 states have declared it their official dance. If you have yet to try this folk dance, take your partner by the hand and swing him/her down to the nearest hootenanny.

Beirut; the capital of Lebanon, is the main hub of activity. Here celebrations are held with pomp and glory. You can also witness a grand parade featuring Lebanese and military dignitaries.

November 28thAlbania Independence Day Dita e Pavarësisë (“Independence Day” in English) was declared in 1912 by Ismail Qemali, founder of the modern Albanian state and its first head of state and government. After five hundred years of Ottoman domination, an independent Albania was proclaimed on November 28, 1912. The Albanian flag is ceremonially raised in Tirana, Albania’s capital, with the presence of the President, Prime Minister, Tirana’s mayor, and other officials. They also visit the national martyrs’ cemetery.

26 The Parks and Waterfalls of Ubon - Thailand’s North-East Ubon Ratchathani is one of the northeastern provinces of Thailand, and the country’s easternmost, located about 630 km from Bangkok. There are three famous and interesting national parks in this Province and some excellent natural waterfalls.

Phu Chong – Na Yoi National Park This 687 square kilometre park is where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia meet. The superb view of the three countries can be seen from the Pha Pheung cliff where visitors can take hiking trails leading to the high plateau. Interesting attractions include; the 40 metre Bak Tew Yai waterfall, about 4 kilometres from the park office; the rock formations at Phlan Yew and springs in the forest at Bo Nam Sap.

Kaeng Tana National Park Kaeng Tana National Park is in Khong Chiam District on the Mun River. It is a protected area of 80 square kilometres. The park has an average elevation is about 200 metres with many undulating hills and undulating plains divided by the Mun River. The highest peak, Ban Tad, stands at 543 metres. The park is covered by deciduous forest and dry evergreen forests as well as grassland, and bamboo. Wildlife includes wild pigs, barking deer, civet, macaque and gibbon. Kaeng Tana is also home to large mammal animal species including, Common Wild Bear, Palm Civet and Common Muntjack.

Pha Taem National Park Covering an area of 140 square kilometres, this National Park features plateaus, hills, deciduous forest, and sheer cliffs. There are irregular shaped sandstone outcrops and beautiful wild flowers growing among the rocky ground. Highlight of the Park are Pha Taem and Pha Kam which are located near the National park headquarters. There are numerous prehistoric cave paintings from 3,000-4,000 years ago depicting the traditional way of life of people during the prehistoric days including fishing, rice farming, human figures, animals, hands and geometric designs. Pha Team is one of the world’s oldest agrarian communities with Ubon Ratchathani as the cradle of Northeastern civilisation. Recently discovered archaeological evidence suggests that humans settled in this area between 14,000-6,000 years ago.

What makes this waterfall unique is that the water comes down through a big hole in the rock instead of spilling over a cliff. At around 11 AM, sunlight shines through the hole at the same angle as the falling

Huai Luang Waterfall, also known as Bak Tew Waterfall, is a 40 metre waterfall in Phu Jong Na Yoi National Park of Southern Ubon. Bak Tew is Khmer for “Beautiful Room” and when you’re down by the waterfall that description makes a lot of

sense. Bak Tew is also the name of a man who supposedly committed suicide by jumping off the waterfall due to a broken heart. It’s a spectacular place to visit even when it’s just a trickle in the dry season. From downtown Ubon it takes around 2 hours to get there. If possible, go on a weekday and leave early in the morning so that when you arrive, the sun is shining on the waterfall. If you wait until afternoon, the sun goes behind the cliff and it’s not quite as spectacular and the water feels colder.

Growing Interest for Thailand Real Estate among Japanese Investors

There are many reasons for a growth of interest growth among Japanese investors in Thailand real estate. The most vital of those reasons is the economic situations of Japan, government’s policies and its public response to the economic fluctuations. Natural disasters like earth quake, social and cultural boundaries and restrictions on Japanese youth are also factors encouraging the Japanese to look towards Thailand. To explain further we must first understand the economic conditions of Japan. Japan is the world’s third biggest economy, a noteworthy aid contributor and one of the essential origins of worldwide capital and credit, with a population of 127 million in 2015 and a per capita income of US$32,486. The country is worlds fourth biggest in terms of export and import, and has the world’s largest electronics and mechanical and automobile industry.

From 2000 to 2007, the Japanese economy developed by a normal of 1.5% every year. However because of the worldwide financial crisis, the economy shrunk by 1% in 2008 and by another 5.5% in 2009. The economy came back to growth in 2010 with GDP development of 4.7%. At that point Japanese development contracted once more, by 0.5% in 2011 because of the effect of the Great Tohoku Earthquake on March 11th, 2011. The economy developed by an unassuming 1.7% in 2012 and by another 1.4% in 2013. In 2015, the economy extended by a tiny 0.5%, after a compression of 0.03% in 2014. The Japanese economy developed by an annualized rate of 1.7% in Q1 2016, in sharp diverges from the past quarter’s 1.7% decay. The economy is expected increase by a pitiful 0.5% this year and to decrease by 0.06% in 2017, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This economic instability is causing turbulence in the mind set of middle class and middle income investors. They feel that their capital is insecure if invested in Japan, which is the reason new investors and young businessmen are looking for alternative economies and for many of them Thailand is the best option in the region with its lucrative condominium real estate industry. Thai-Japanese Government level cooperation: This is another most encouraging aspect for Japanese Investors to come to Thailand and invest in the infrastructural development of Thailand. In addition to this Thailand is the biggest manufacturing hub for Japanese companies in Southeast Asia.

Tokyo, seeking to counter China’s developing impact in Southeast Asia, Japan has reaffirmed its solid financial ties with Thailand. Thailand’s Prime Minister, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, said on a visit to Tokyo that he would permit Japan to invest in railway ventures, a consoling stance for Tokyo. His Japanese counterpart said he had “productive discourses” with the Thai PM. “The financial ties between the two nations are getting to be more profound,” he said at a news meeting. This level collaboration is proving helpful in confidence building for Japanese investors in Thailand markets.

32 4 Colour Your Bedroom – Colour Your Life

When picking your bedroom decor, the colour scheme may make a difference if you want to get more sleep or improve your love life. A recent survey conducted by Travelodge revealed that certain shades can stimulate or relax sleepers, and their effects last beyond night time. After polling 2,000 guests on their evening habits, the hotel chain found some surprising results. Check out their findings, and start planning your next makeover accordingly.

Silver

Gray

People with silver bedrooms like the luxurious yet soothing metallic tones, but they can have an unexpected side effect. A fifth of respondents with silver décor said they’re more motivated to exercise in their bedroom.

Dark gray isn’t a good choice, either. Besides its dreary connotations, the survey found people with gray bedrooms spent the most time online shopping in bed instead of catching up on sleep.

Orange

Light Brown

Shades of orange add warmth and create a relaxing atmosphere that can aid digestion – especially if you’ve eaten a big dinner. The colour helps warm and relax body muscles, which is essential to getting a good night’s sleep.

Romantics, take note. Couples who sleep in a bedroom with caramel décor have reported a much more active love life, more than any other colour.

Purple

Red

People with purple bedrooms are the least rested of all, getting on average a measly five hours and 56 minutes sleep per night. The rich colour is actually very mentally stimulating, making it difficult to switch off after a busy day and potentially causing vivid dreams or nightmares.

And contrary to popular belief, red bedrooms are actually the worst for romance — these residents reported the least active love life.

Blue

People with blue bedrooms got more sleep than any other colour. It’s not just coincidence, either, specialised receptors in our eyes — the same cells that inform our brain’s daily rhythms — are most sensitive to the colour blue. Blue is also associated with calmness and it can lower your heart rate and reduce blood pressure.

Yellow

Surprisingly, the second-best colour for sleep is yellow. The sunny hue stimulates the nervous system, encouraging relaxation. Plus, the cheery shade creates instant coziness.

Green

Gold

Dark Brown

An earthy green isn’t a shabby pick, either. It was the third best colour palette for sleep, and 22 percent of respondents who slept in a green bedroom reported waking up feeling upbeat and positive.

The colour isn’t as cozy as you think — it can make residents feel isolated, uncomfortable, and restless.

It may sound cliché, but bankers and other finance workers were more likely to feature gold décor in their bedrooms. The glitzy metal is associated with wealth for a reason!

Black Mountain Wins Gold Award Best Sports & Recreation Facility 2016

The Asia 2016 Sports Industry awards (SPIA) took place at the Centara World Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand on 3-4 October 2016. “To be voted ‘Best Sports & Recreation Facility’ by such a distinguished international panel is extremely rewarding” said Black Mountain Managing Director, Harald Elisson. “Giving our visitors and members the best possible leisure experience is our number one priority, and an award like this confirms that we are

getting it right, and it also focuses our attention to continue improving”. The award was presented by Col. RujSaengUdom - Deputy Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand. Hosting many championship golf tournaments, including Asian & European Tour Events, has put Hua Hin & Black Mountain firmly on the international map, becoming a golfing destination of choice for many.

A string of other awards, including “Best Golf Course in Asia Pacific” and being “Ranked No. 1 Golf Course in Thailand” by Golf Digest has cemented Black Mountain’s position as a premier golf resort in the region. See the website for more information about Black Mountain: www.blackmountainhuahin.com

Thongchai Jaidee Foundation Event 2016 (1St-4Th December 2016)

From December 1st - 4th, Black Mountain resident & Thai golfing legend, Thongchai Jaidee, hosts his own tournament at Black Mountain Golf Club, for the second time in 2 years.

In a star-studded field of enormous talent, already confirmed to play alongside Thongchai are: Prayad Marksaeng, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Prom Meesawat, Chapchai Nirat, Simon Yates & Johan Edfors.

A total of 144 players will compete in the four million baht (approximately US$115,000) event, which includes 24 invitee spots offered by the man himself, who will also be in the field. The remaining 120 spots will be split in this co-sanctioned event, between the ADT (Asian Development Tour) and the All Thailand Golf Tour.

“It’s a pleasure to be providing the venue and working again this year with Thongchai, says Black Mountain Managing Director Harald Elisson. “The future of golf in Thailand depends on its rising stars, so supporting the Foundation in it’s efforts to assist Thai youth with educational opportunities is very rewarding, and playing a part in realising and developing national golfing talent is of great interest to Black Mountain.” Thongchai, who holds an unprecedented three Order of Merit crowns and 13titles on the Asian Tour, including this year’s 100th Open de France, is the third Asian Tour player after Korea’s K.J. Choi and compatriot Boonchu Ruangkit, to host his own tournament in Asia. In 2009, he realised his intent to give back to the game by launching the Thongchai Jaidee Foundation to help under-privileged golfers in his hometown of Lopburi. The foundation not only supports professional golf for men but also women professional golf in Thailand through the Thai LPGA. By the staging of his own tournaments, Thongchai hopes to draw increased attention to his growing foundation and at the same time, create playing opportunities for the region’s emerging talent. “We are providing them with the knowledge of the game which could probably earn them a living one day,” said Thongchai, currently ranked 49th position in the world.

“We received an official letter from Thailand Ministry of Finance recently to certify that the foundation has been exempted from tax thanks to our contributions to the society over the years. It was a great milestone for us,” added Thongchai. “The ADT (Asian Development Tour) has grown immensely over the years. It has been a great platform for budding golfers to gain playing experiences and hone their skills before moving on to the bigger stage. The Tour has also produced a handful of upcoming young players who are just waiting to burst onto the scene.” “We have enjoyed a very successful event last year where Kiradech (Aphibarnrat) won. I am sure the field will be very competitive again this year and we can look forward to some world-class action from the rising stars

of the game this December,” said the 46-yearold Thai. Asian Tour Associate Director Irfan Hamid said: “Thongchai has been one of our most successful golfers for over a decade and his tournaments will be an inspiration to the younger generation of golfers across the region.” The ADT will continue to reward the top-five finishers on the Order of Merit at the end of this season with Asian Tour cards for 2017. The sponsors of the Thongchai Jaidee Foundation 2016 include SINGHA, Black Mountain Golf Club, Betagro, and Idemitsu. Harald Elisson added: “It’s going to be a great event, and we look forward to welcoming the players, supporters and sponsors, doing so much great work for the Foundation.”

A Ball Perched in the Rough isn’t Always a Good Thing

Golf tip November

As we are in the middle of the rainy season and the rough is thicker than normal this months tip helps you prevent the “flyer” from the rough. You’ve hit it into the rough, and when you get up to your ball you’re psyched because you realize it’s sitting up. Not so fast. A ball perched in the rough isn’t always a good thing. When your ball is sitting up like that, you’re likely to hit a flyer. You’ve seen the shot: You club yourself correctly, but you fly it to the back of the green and it runs right off. This happens because at impact, the grass gets in between the clubface and the ball. This keeps the face from being able to grab the ball like it normally does, so the ball comes flying out without spin and runs when it hits. To keep this from happening to you, First, play it farther back in your stance, (Pic 1) about middle for a short iron. This will lean the shaft more toward the target. Then, hinge your wrists abruptly on the backswing, (Pic 2)! which sets up a steeper angle into impact. Finally, as you swing through, keep the back of your top hand going toward the target for as long as you can. This will guard against the face twisting if it catches the grass first. Luna La Pran – Oceanside Dining Excellence Sheraton Hua Hin Pranburi Villas has a prime location on the long stretch of ocean frontage at Paknampran. That’s just a 20 minute drive south from Hua Hin and the perfect place for a weekend away at a luxury villa or just an afternoon of indulgence at the Luan La Pran Restaurant.

Our afternoon visit to Luna La Pran couldn’t take advantage of any moonlight vistas as the name ‘Luna’ suggests, but the cooling breezes and sea view panorama was the perfect setting to enjoy a fine dining experience. The official entrance to the Sheraton is down a small side road off the beachfront with a 5 minute stroll to the restaurant. Although just parking on the ocean road may be a closer option, the stroll was a great introduction to the serenity of the resort, along a palm fringed green walk-way with salas almost floating in water lily ponds, just a hint of the very private villas nearby and past the other dining place; the slightly more formal Dalah Restaurant.

2 42 Not Only Eating Bread, But Loving Bread in Cha-Am!

‘Aun’s Baguettes’ was a name that didn’t really describe the passion that many people feel about eating bread. Just a few months after opening Aun’s Baguettes in Cha-Am, owner Khun Aun (Jettapon Yoswichai) quickly realised his bakery name needed to reflect to that passion, so a decision was made to change the name.

‘Aun’s Baguettes’ is now ‘Love Bread’. Changing the name of any business is a big decision to make. Apart from the costs (signage, packaging, customer information etc.), there’s brand loyalty to consider. In this case Khun Aun’s customers encouraged the change, (they are bread lovers) so rebranding their favourite place for coffee and comfort food was very welcomed. So what has changed apart from the name? The short answer is almost nothing. Same baker with a passion for the product (bread of all varieties, coffee, sandwiches, light meals AND baguettes), same service and same location. Just a new name that reflects what it’s all about; we all love bread! Love Bread Where: Narathip Road, Cha-Am; on the left heading from the main traffic lights half way towards the beach. All Your Palate Could Ask For and Then More

My greeting from Khun Koy on arrival at the Hua Hin Hills Bistro and Wine Cellar for a 1 PM lunch was “I hope that you are feeing hungry!” Skipping breakfast and any earlier temptations meant that was an absolute YES; several hours later, the same question would have been answered with an emphatic no! Our dining and wining experience included these three courses of exquisite Thai cuisine featuring dishes from the very north of Thailand; just one of the regions being ‘visited’ monthly. But then an unexpected finale that really meant ‘im laew;’ or to put it politely in English, more than an elegant sufficiency. Krabong: This is a favorite kind of crispy fried snack in the north of Thailand and a great entree. Variations can be made by replacing the pumpkin or other vegetables with banana flowers, green papayas, green squash, tiny fish or prawns. Aeb Pla: Fillets of fish, coated in spices and herbs, wrapped into a banana leaf package, and grilled. An eruption of spice, aromatic herb, and steam, it was sensationally delicious – I loved how the fish was moist and oily, yet is still had the smoky flavour of being grilled. Gang Hung Lae: This dish has a wonderful exotic aroma especially from garlic and ginger. The pork is simmered to tenderise and traditionally there is no need to use expensive cuts.

Perhaps something like a Thai version of massaman curry although it is said to have originated in Myanmar then introduced to Thailand and modified to suit local tastes. Wine pairings, included the initial sparkling Mionetto Prosecco Brut, through Kellermeister Reisling, Chilean Chardonnay, ‘Mud House’ New Zealand Pinot Noir and probably a few other fine wines. Thai food has proven it’s compatibility with not only both the local Monsoon variety from Siam Wines, but with the best drop from every continent available. Sometime during the course of my lunchtime conversation with gracious host Khun Koy, I asked her about the best local source of beef, specifically steak for the home barbecue. Pon Yang Kham beef was the advice, from Sakhon Nakhon Province. This is the home of livestock cooperative Thailand’s best beef, thanks to its French hybrid cows between two best breeds Charolais and Limosin sponsored by the French government. Some 15 minutes after that topic of conversation was concluded, I was presented with another course, absolutely without any suggestion from me. Just to show how a steak can be tender and succulent in Thailand, a magnificent medium rare steak arrived. I was too amazed to ask about the preparation and use of the herbs and spices which made this yet anuther memorable component of the dinner. The only issue was my inability to finish more than half of the steak, definitely im laew!

433 ‘Float All Your Troubles Away’

Loy Krathong is a unique Thai festival when you can send your bad luck, guilt, negativity and pretty much everything rotten about your life down the river or out to sea. This year the main event is on the evening of the full moon, on Monday, 14th November. November full moon shines, Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong, and the water’s high in the river and local klong, Loy Loy Krathong, Loy Loy Krathong, Loy Krathong is here and everybody’s full of cheer, We’re together at the klong, Each one with his krathong, As we push away we pray, We can see a better day.’ (An English translation of an old Thai children’s song)

the festival. She made them from banana leaves and shaped them like lotus flowers. The King was impressed and announced that Krathongs would be floated on the water every year. Loy (float) Krathong (container) occurs on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which is November 14th this year. The full moon shining on waterways which are flooded after the rainy season makes this one of the most beautiful and popular festivals in Thailand. During the evening, many people will go to their local klong (canal) or river to float their Krathongs. They believe this will bring them good luck and is a symbolic way of letting go of all grudges, anger, and negative thoughts so they can restart their life fresh on a better foot.

The tradition of Loy Krathong has been observed in Thailand for no less than 700 years since the Sukhothai period (1238 1438). It is based on a Hindu tradition of thanking the Water Gods for the waters (Pra Mae Khongkha) or as homage to the legendary footprint the Buddha left on the bank of the River Narmada in India. One year, a beautiful woman called Noppamas, who was the chief royal consort, made some special lanterns for

Krathongs contain a flower, a candle and three incense sticks which are lit before being placed on the water. In the old days people also trim their nails and put a bit of hair in the Krathong, wishing that it will take the bad luck and illness away. A few added coins may appease the great water gods. The people usually make a wish at the same time. Some people believe that if the candle remains burning until the Krathong is out of sight then their wish will come true. Alternatively couples release one Krathong each, hoping they will float away together, a sign of everlasting love.

By the end of the evening, there are hundreds of flickering lights bobbing up and down on the water. Quite often there are also firework displays as well as shows. Overall it is a really memorable evening. On the beach, a more modern trend is to release flying lanterns and a pretty impressive sky can be seen at night. The memory of that woman who made the first Krathong is often remembered

in beauty contests called “The Noppamas Queen Contest”. Around Hua Hin and Cha – Am just head for the beaches and waterways to be involved. The most popular locations for local people is where a waterway flows into the sea. Krathongs then start their journey in the waterway before heading out to the open ocean.

444 The Fresh Herbs and Spices in Thai Food

You may know many Thai dishes but you may not know about Thai herbs that lend their distinctive flavours and aromas and really characterise Thai cuisine. 1. Bai makrut / Kaffir lime leaves

Kaffir lime leaves are widely used in spicy Thai soups and curries, either cooked whole, together with the dish, and/or finely shredded and added before serving.

3. Gui chai / Allium tuberosum Chinese chives

6. Kracha / Holy basi

Closer in flavour to garlic than onions. Used to season cooking and is used in stir fries such as pad Thai and comes in green and yellow varieties.

Holy basil has a distinctive scent of clove and reddish tipped leaves. It is used, for instance, in the well-known Kraphao mu (minced pork fried with basil).

4. Horapha / Thai sweet basil

7. Maenglak / Lemon basil

2. Bai toei / Pandan or screwpine leaves

FOOD & Entertainment, November 2016

A herb often seen in spicy soups and Northern curries. It literally means “European coriander”, perhaps because it was brought from the Caribbean to Thailand by Europeans. 10. Phrik khi nu / Bird’s eye chilli

A variety of the sweet basil with a taste of anise. It is used in different curries such as red and green curry and often also served separately. This sweet smelling leaf is used for flavouring different sweet snacks/ desserts. It is also used in the well known dish Kai ho bai toei, deep fried chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves, as well as to stuff the belly of barbecued fish.

9. Phak chi farang / Culantro

5. Kha / Galangal The perfume-like scent and flavour of the galangal root is characteristic for many Thai curries and spicy soups.

The leaves are used in certain curries. It is also indispensable with Khanom chin nam ya. The seeds resemble frog’s eggs when soaked in water and are used in sweet desserts. 8. Phak chi / Coriander/cilantro leaves The leaves are seen often as a garnish with many Thai dishes. It is indispensable for Tom yam soup.

This small chilli is one of the spiciest and used extensively in Thai cooking. The Thai name literally translates to “mousedropping chilli”

The Rocks is next to a breathtakingly beautiful stretch of the Hua Hin beach overlooking the Cape Nidhra swimming pool. Dining at the Rocks is an experience to be savoured. 12 52 Nang Talung – Me and My Shadow

Nang Talung is a folk shadow puppet spectacle of the southern region of Thailand. It is a very popular kind of entertainment.

Academics believe that this kind of “shadow play” featured in human culture since time immemorial and was prevalent both in Europe and Asia. In Asia, shadow the puppet spectacle spread to Java (Indonesia), Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand.

Nang Talung tells a story in verses, which are sung (called “wa bot”) in dialect, interspersed with dialogue, and uses the puppets’ shadow on the screen to attract the audience attention. All these tasks are performed solely by nai nang talung–the Nang Talung puppeteer.

Local people in the south of Thailand formerly called Nang Talung or as a shortened form–“Nang”. It is thought that the word “Nang Talung” probably originated after the shadow puppet spectacle from the south was shown to the central region. Wanting to distinguish this kind of “Nang” (shadow puppet spectacle) from the Nang Yai (Grand Shadow Puppet Spectacle), the central region people added “Talung” to the word “Nang”. The word “Talung” came from “Phatthalung”.

The principal elements and equipments for a Nang Talung spectacle are: the screen, the lighting equipments, and the musical instruments. The musical ensemble comprises a pi nai (a kind of Thai oboe); a mong (medium sized gong), a thap (tuned one-sided drums), a klong tuk (a kind of drum), a pair of ching (a pair of small cymbals) and a pair of trae (a pair of claves [hardwood sticks). The musicians called “luk khu” play the music during the spectacle. Thap is the most important musical instrument in the band because it controls the tempo and rhythm for the other members of the band to follow.

The southerner’s shadow puppet spectacle was performed in Bangkok for the first time during King Rama III’s reign when Chao Phraya Phatthalung (Phueak) brought the troupe to perform in Nang Loeng subdistrict. The puppeteer was from Phatthalung Province.

FOOD & Entertainment, November 2016

The set of leather puppets comprising the ruesi (rishia hermit), Phra Isuan (the Hindu God Ishvara or Shiva), Chao Mueang, Nang Mueang, the hero and the heroine,

the deities, the demons, the comedian, and other characters featured in a phaeng nang. The comedian character is the most important of the whole set and indispensable. The comic parts add colour to the spectacle and leave strong and longlasting impression on the audience. People will talk about the jokes and the funny bits and tell others about them. If the puppeteer succeeds in creating a hilarious character that people keep talking about can be considered a truly accomplished puppeteer. Besides its entertaining value, Nang Talung’s lasting popularity from the past to the present also rests on the sharp wit of the puppeteer who comments on the prevailing social occurrences and happenings through the puppets. This reflects the character of the southern people who are keen on following social and political development and occurrences in the nation. Nang Talung has therefore been a part of the social and cultural landscape of the southern people throughout the ages.

Italian Cooking With Paola First an introduction from Paola: “My name is Paola and I’m Italian although I have been leaving in Hua Hin from almost nine years. Cooking has always been a hobby and a passion for me having learnt from my mother and some other relatives the real and traditional Italian way to cook. The recipes I will show you come from the old Italian tradition of my family over many generations. My home town of Venice is the origin of these dishes, so I will let you know some typical dishes of this beautiful and charming place which are not so well known abroad. This month I will show you how to cook a Venetian pasta dish; “I Bigoi in Salsa”. The Bigoi pasta was created in 1604 by a pasta maker from Verona; Bartolomio Veronese. The sauce is derived from the need to combine the carbohydrates of the pasta, necessary for sustenance, and protein, especially sardines, which could be found in the ocean’s inexpensive supermarket from the lagoon of Venice. According to tradition, this dish is consumed on the eve of special religious days such as Christmas and Easter. I hope you will be pleased with this recipe and enjoy the “Bigoi in Salsa” (bucatini with anchovies).

Ingredients for 4 persons 320gr. of bucatini (a thick spaghetti-like pasta with a hole running through the centre) 1 onion cooking salt black pepper extra vergin olive oil dry white wine anchovies a stick of butter Start by preparing the sauce: Chop thinly an onion and stir fry in a saucepan with extra virgin olive oil until it becomes golden. Add the anchovies cut into small pieces without their oil together with a little amount of black pepper and dry white wine. Stir fry for about 5 minutes until the wine evaporates. To make the sauce creamier, you might add a stick of butter. Meanwhile fill with a pot with water and boil, then add a little cooking salt and let it dissolve. I suggest you only about 3 teaspoons of cooking salt because the anchovies are already slightly salted. Add the bucatini and cook according to the cooking time indicated in the pack. I suggest you to remove the pasta from the water least two minutes before the suggested cooking time. Pour the pasta in the saucepan and mix together.... and now; buon appetito!! ‘Father Of The Thai Nation’

From The King’s Early Life, Ascension to The Throne And In Later Years, He Has Always Been The Embodiment of The Title ‘Father Of The Thai Nation’ Our recognition and tribute of the life of King Bhumibol Adulyadej is only a brief glimpse of the life and times of this revered monarch who will forever be remembered for the loyal dedication and love of his people and nation.

The Early Years

Family

‘Strength of the land, incomparable power’

His Majesty the King of Thailand inspired Members of his own Family to be actively involved in many development projects.

HM King Bhumibol was born at Cambridge Hospital in Massachusetts, USA on 5th December 1927. He was the youngest son of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla, and Mom Sangwan (later Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother). His uncle, King Rama VII, then head of the House of Chakri, chose his name, Bhumibol Adulyadej, meaning “strength of the land, incomparable power”. Prince Bhumibol Adulyadej began his studies at Mater Dei, a Catholic school in Bangkok. However, with the change of the political system from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy in 1932, in 1933 his mother took her family to Switzerland, where he continued his education in Lausanne. The family remained in Switzerland and by 1945 he was studying sciences at the University of Lausanne, when World War II ended and the family was able to return to Thailand.

Ascension To The Throne

“We shall reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people.” This is the accession oath His Majesty the King took upon his coronation on 5th May 1950. Following the sudden death of his brother, His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol on 9th June 1946, Prince Bhumibol Adulyadej became the heir apparent. In 1948, His Majesty suffered serious injury in an automobile accident and lost his sight in one eye. In the weeks of convalescence, he was tended by the 16-year-old M.R. Sirikit. The couple announced their engagement on M.R. Sirikit’s 17th birthday in Lausanne. The Prince and his fiancée returned to Thailand on 24th March 1950 where they were given a joyous welcome. Their wedding was held at Sapathum Palace on 28th April 1950. On 5th May 1950 in the Grand Palace he became King Rama IX of the Chakri Dynasty. To prepare himself for his new role, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej returned to Switzerland to complete his university education. He quickly acknowledged the influence of his brother, His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol who had sought opportunities to see first-hand the lives of his people. “My brother had no time to do many things...but he set up perhaps without knowing, a new Kingship. The people had somebody to look on as a symbol, a new thing, because in the past Kings were perhaps more sheltered.” This very hands-on approach dovetailed with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s own endless curiosity about everything around him. Taking one of his Royal titles, Phra Chao Phaen Din (“Lord of the Land”), seriously, he traveled extensively through the villages near his summer palace at Hua Hin, on the coast south of Bangkok. His journeys made him aware of the problems faced by farmers and farm families. His Majesty and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit toured wearing an ordinary white shirt and no Royal trappings; he talked with farmers about their daily lives. He also received petitions, much as his Grandfather, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn had. The King’s statements about the importance of farmers set the theme and scope for the work he would pursue throughout his reign. “It is the peasant, the farmer, who is the backbone of Thailand” “Our economy has traditionally been based upon agriculture”. The national income which has contributed to creating prosperity in the country has been derived mainly from agricultural productivity. It can, therefore, be said that the nation’s prosperity relies to a large extent on ensuring the prosperity of agriculture.” November 2016

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit: In 1972 Her Majesty came upon a beautiful indigenous local silk called mudmee. Realising its production would be a means of bringing income to village women who wove it, she set up a foundation to handle everything from raising silkworms to marketing. Its success prompted her to explore other Thai traditional crafts and embarked on an ambitious venture that involved engaging the old masters to teach young artisans the fine points of their crafts. In 1976, she set up the SUPPORT Foundation (Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques) to ensure that the program would survive long into the future. H.R.H. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn: Having spent considerable time in the provinces, the Crown Prince became aware of the need for better health care for rural residents. Her interest in new knowledge led her to establish the Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre. H.R.H. Princess Chulabhorn: Princess Chulabhorn is a research chemist who established the Chulabhorn Foundation in 1986 and the Chulabhorn Research Institute in 1987. 3 A Lifetime of Achievements; The Royal Projects

“The development of the country must be fostered in stages. It must start with the construction of infrastructure, that is, the provision of food and basic necessities for the people by methods which are economic, cautious and conforming with principles. “Once the foundation is firmly established, progress can be continually, carefully and economically promoted. This approach will prevent incurring mistakes and failures, and lead to the certain and complete achievement of the objectives.” From HM the King’s speech at Kasetsart University commencement ceremony, 19thJuly 1974. His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej and members of Thailand’s Royal Family have set up numerous village-based community development projects nationwide which are now open for small-scale tourism. They provide unique insights into the King’s concept of a sufficiency economy and are models of alternative economic development. During the modern period (post1988), the development of the Royal Projects reached its apex. The Chaipattana Foundation was established, promoting his “sufficiency economy” theory, an alternative to the export-oriented policies adopted by the period’s elected governments. After 2006, establishment of a “sufficiency economy” was enshrined in the constitution. Royal Projects offer businesses and organisations new ways to offer incentives or to boost teamwork while contributing to grassroots communities. But to tourists, they are a great way of making memories. Here’s a look at just five of the main and most accessible of the Royal Projects. There’s many, many more!

Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang, Chiang Mai Angkhang is home to one of the most important Royal Projects and is a centre for research in cold climate crops thanks to an annual mean temperature of only 16.9 Celsius and fertile soils. It is home to various ethnic groups who live in the surrounding villages, and visitors are welcome to explore the local culture.

Royal Agricultural Station Inthanon, Chiang Mai This is one of the oldest of the Royal Projects, founded back in 1979. Here hill-tribe people grow sustainable crops with regular harvests to prevent slash and burn techniques and to ensure they never again have to rely on opium as a cash crop.

A Personal Legacy

HM King Bhumibol was also a painter, musician, photographer, author and translator. His legacy includes these personal attributes in addition to his royal achievements.

Music

HM King Bhumibol was an accomplished jazz saxophone player and composer, playing Dixieland and New Orleans jazz, and also the clarinet, trumpet, guitar, and piano. HM The King performed with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, and Benny Carter. He wrote 49 compositions, including marches, waltzes, and Thai patriotic songs, but mostly jazz swing.

Sailing

HM King Bhumibol was an accomplished sailor and sailboat designer. He won a gold medal for sailing in the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1967. This accomplishment was all the more remarkable given a lack of binocular depth perception. In 1966, he sailed single-handed across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Toey Ngam Harbour in Sattahip, covering 60 nautical miles (110 km) in a 17-hour journey on the “Vega 1”, an OK Class dinghy he built.

Patents

HM King Bhumibol was the only Thai monarch to hold a patent. He obtained one in 1993 for a waste water aerator named “Chai Pattana”, and several patents on rainmaking after 1955 including the “sandwich” rainmaking patent in 1999 and the “supersandwich” patent in 2003.

Final remarks

“The King ruled, was a leader, converted people’s despair into determination and stability. He stood up and fought many different obstacles.” Statement from Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Over 70 years, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej took the country through periods of political turmoil with his wise counsel. His fortitude and devotion to human development were an inspiration to all. Regardless of the differences and disparities across Thai society, His Majesty was a solitary constant, a beacon of hope for Thais rich and poor, young and old, rural farmers and urban residents alike. His Majesty King Bhumibol’s selflessness, generosity and compassion will always be remembered. To honour the monarch, Thais must learn to follow in his footsteps and carry on his royal legacies. Nong Hoi Royal Project Development Centre, Chiang Mai Another northern Royal Project, Nong Hoi, was also set up in 1974 with the aim of helping Hmong hill-tribe people diversify their crops. Now it is a popular venue for eco and agro tourism. It is also home to Yao, Lisu, and Haw (Chinese) hill-tribes with unique handicrafts being made and some traditional ceremonies.

Chang Hua Man Royal Project, Phetchaburi This is one of the newest Royal Projects initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol in 2009. Situated in Phetchaburi Province, the project is aimed at showing how crops can be grown to a commercial level without the need for damaging chemical fertilisers. The Project boasts a dairy farm and has become a learning centre for farmers who want to improve milk yields.

The Special Royal Connection To Hua Hin

The Royal connection that Hua Hin has to this day, started around the turn of the 20th century when Prince Chakrabhongse came to Hua Hin on a hunting trip. He liked the town and returned to build the first Thai beach villa in Hua Hin. King Rama VI then built a summer retreat here and even later King Rama VII built yet another palace, naming it Klaikangwon - “far from worries”. From 2004 until 2006 it was the full-time residence of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), until health issues forced him to return to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, returning again in 2013. One Buddhist temple the late king used to pray at was the Rajaya Rattana Banpot Temple. Boonpeng Talalak, one of the staff members at the temple, was only 10 years old when he first met King Bhumibol back in 1974. He recalled fondly how fortunate he was to have been able to see his king up close. “We felt so lucky to be so close to him,” he said. “We didn’t have to stay outside the temple’s fence during his visit. We were two metres away from him”. “I always miss him as he is in my heart,” said Boonpeng. “He used to come to Hua Hin every year. But now…” A tree in Rajaya Rattana Banpot planted by the monarch more than 40 years ago in honour of his brother King Rama the 8th is also a marker at the temple for the Thai people to remember him. Built in the 1920’s, Hua Hin’s Railway Station is one of the oldest in Thailand. The main attraction is The Royal Waiting Room, which was used to welcome the King and his court when they visited the town. The station was designed and decorated in the same style as the Mrigadayavan Palace.
