By the time this issue of Hua Hin Today is in print the final curtains will be drawn on a momentous year in the history of Thailand with the concluding days of the Royal Cremation of the beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Most of us have been unable to witness the Royal Cremation in Bangkok first hand, but with television coverage providing amazing visual impressions of the ceremonies, the outpouring of emotion and the magnificent spectacle of the occasion; words seem somewhat superfluous. The Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha thanked the Thai people in Thailand and throughout the world for their spontaneous show of respect and loyalty for His Majesty. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), has also expressed deep appreciation to all visitors to Thailand for the respect and understanding shown over the past year. Very few reports have been received about visitors or resident foreigners misunderstanding or failing to show their respects; a pleasing reaction which has been appreciated by all levels of Thai society. Although the memories of the reign of King Rama IX will certainly endure; it is time to turn the pages and enter the next chapter as the portraits of King Rama X become more prevalent on the streets of the nation and Thailand returns to the colours of daily life. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has urged the Thai people to change their sorrow into strength to perform their duties, to give moral support to one another and to advance the country toward prosperity as wished by the late King. King Bhumibol passed down much useful advice to executives around the country, including being mindful of one’s financial situation, gratitude, innovation and invention. Suphachai said the group has “integrated the King’s philosophy of economic sufficiency into its strategy in order to achieve sustainability in its business conduct. CP’s integration of the King’s teachings goes back to 1971, when the group worked on Hat Sai Yai farm, King Bhumibol’s personal farm.

6 ‘Krailart Niwate’ – Preserving Hua Hin’s Urban Mangroves In many tropical countries, mangrove forests are a crucial component of a coastal environment. In the past, vast mangrove forests spread out along much of the coasts of Thailand

The original mangrove forests provided nursery grounds for small fish, crabs, shellfish, and shrimp, and feeding grounds for birds and monkeys. In the past half century, however, the mangrove forests have been rapidly diminishing due to the expansion of shrimp and salt farms. From 1961 to 1996, Thailand lost approximately 56 % of its mangrove forests.
Named Krailart Niwate after the adjacent 18 Rai plot of landowners, Wat Khao Krai Lart, the mangrove area was once in a poor state. The project took shape in 2013 when the temple’s abbot agreed to a plan to bring the mangrove ecosystem back to life. In the fourth quarter of 2014, experts from Silpakorn University joined to conduct a scientific survey of the land and produced the design of the now constructed 1,000 metre elevated walkway as a concrete boardwalk with rest shelters en route. Financial backing for Krailart Niwate to date has largely been dependent on Chiva-Som International Health Resorts with the support of Rotaract Clubs at Stamford and Webster universities and the Hua Hin Business Network. The Siam Commercial Bank has now donated one million THB to support Krailart Niwate.

Krailart Niwate is a mangrove preservation and environmental wellness project spearheaded by Krip Rojanastien and the Preserve Hua Hin Group under the Royal patronage of HRH Princess Maha Sirindhorn and driven by Hua Hin’s renowned health resort Chiva-Som. The aim is to preserve the last remaining urban mangrove ecosystem in Hua Hin to provide scientific understanding, knowledge and appreciation of nature. We hope that this article serves as a stepping stone for you to discover the revitalizing power of exercise, and inspire you to actively seek to become energized and make a change in your life. The aim is to reinvent each and everyone’s outlook on not only their bodies but also their minds. Getting rid of negative outlooks on your age, current health conditions and overall physical capabilities is all part of the journey. It is of utmost importance that you not only desire to change yourself, but enjoy doing it as well. Why is my body so weak? It is common for senior and the elderly to have fallen or have overall mobility issues and trouble standing up or functioning healthily in their daily lives. They ask, “what’s the problem?” The culprit in most cases is simple, Inactivity. Studies have shown that it only takes a few days of lying in bed to start losing your strength, flexibility, and balance. Once you fall in this hole of doing nothing, you enter a downward spiral. The downward spiral is the single largest problem. For example, one day you’re simply feeling under the weather so you decide to take it easy for a few days and sit back on your recliner and watch Television.
Help your strength with weight training in the arms and legs. Expand your bone density in the hips and spine. Access greater energy levels for daily activities. Learn to improve your balance with standing and walking. Have fun and keep your independence and vitality. Start with basic exercises and an exercise program.
After a while the chores start piling up, you finally decide to get up and get to work, until suddenly, you lose your balance and crash to the floor. Even if your hip isn’t broken at this point, it’s bound to have caused a nasty bruise. The pain the fall caused now limits you even further and ties you to your bed for an even longer time, causing you to get weaker day by day. Daily chores become increasingly more difficult to handle. Things like cooking and shopping and even showering can occupy large amounts of time and effort and be a huge strain on your body and even your mind. Perhaps you are the child of an elderly adult, and you constantly worry about their safety when you aren’t around. This is a very common concern amongst family members. Exercising and staying overall active will definitely improve their chances of staying safer throughout their life. Staying active and sensibly exercising, coupled with following a healthy lifestyle can add years of productive and functional living. So the problem is inactivity. What is the solution? Where do i begin? Well, It took a while to get into the shape you are in now. The first thing to remember is to always take small steps, especially in the beginning. Rushing yourself along only invites injuries and ultimately even more regression. Your body needs around 4 to 6 weeks to become accustomed to a new activity or exercise program. This is true especially if you have been inactive for a long time. Try exercising for a few minutes a day at first. Gradually crank it up to a solid 30 minute workout, twice a week.
Posture: It’s very important to learn correct posture before carrying out exercises in order to maximize the benefits as well as minimise the possible dangers of injuries. Breathing: Learn proper breathing techniques to help you improve lung capacity, function and overall energy level. Flexibility: Increase your flexibility to allow more motion to your body and limbs and increase your mobility. Strength: Build up your strength in your arms, legs, and back to greatly enhance your functional independence. Endurance: Improve your endurance over time and gain the ability to walk and participate in social activities like dancing, hiking and nature outings. Balance: Recalibrate your balance and increase your safety at home and in public. 10 LOY KRATHONG
‘Float All Your Troubles Away’ Loy Krathong is a unique Thai festival when you can send your bad luck, guilt, negativity and pretty much everything rotten about your life down the river or out to sea. The festival dates depend on the moon calendar. In 2017 the dates are November 2-4, with the full moon day on Friday November 3rd. The tradition of Loy Krathong has been observed in Thailand for no less than 700 years since the Sukhothai period (1238 - 1438). It is based on a Hindu tradition of thanking the Water Gods for the waters (Pra Mae Khongkha) or as homage to the legendary footprint the Buddha left on the bank of the River Narmada in India. Oneyear, a beautiful woman called Noppamas, who was the chief royal consort, made some special lanterns for the festival. She made them from banana leaves and shaped them like lotus flowers. The King was impressed and announced that Krathongs would be floated on the water every year. Loy (float) Krathong (container) occurs on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which is November 17th this year. The full moon shining on waterways which are flooded after the rainy season makes this one of the most beautiful and popular festivals in Thailand. During the evening, many people will go to their local klong (canal) or river to float their Krathongs.
They believe this will bring them good luck and is a symbolic way of letting go of all grudges, anger, and negative thoughts so they can restart their life fresh on a better foot. Krathongs contain a flower, a candle and three incense sticks which are lit before being placed on the water. In the old days people also trim their nails and put a bit of hair in the Krathong, wishing that it will take the bad luck and illness away. A few added coins may appease the great water gods. The people usually make a wish at the same time. Some people believe that if the candle remains burning until the Krathong is out of sight then their wish will come true. Alternatively couples release one Krathong each, hoping they will float away together, a sign of everlasting love. By the end of the evening, there are hundreds of flickering lights bobbing up and down on the water. Quite often there are also firework displays as well as shows. Overall it is a really memorable evening. On the beach, a more modern trend is to release flying lanterns and a pretty impressive sky can be seen at night. Around Hua Hin and Cha – Am there will be plenty of eating and partying at local venues. Just head for the beaches and waterways to be involved. The most popular locations for local people is where a waterway flows into the sea. Krathongs then start their journey in the waterway before heading out to the open ocean.
MTS Gives Green Light for Tourist Financial Aid
New Mini Buses on Trial Run to Provinces
The Transport Company has put on show the first batch of 21-seat mini buses that it said will replace the current commuter vans on the route from Bangkok to the provinces. Transport Company’s board chairman Maj Gen Suraphol Tapananond said the 7-metre long mini buses will be first put on service from Bangkok to destinations in the provinces within a distance of no more than 300 kilometres. All these new mini buses have passed all specification requirement test and have been registered by the Transport Company, he said. Bus operators will first put on services the new mini buses from Bangkok to Ratchaburi tomorrow in October. They will
replace the current commuter vans which have been in use for over 10 years, he said. Meanwhile the Transport Company will first rent 55 new mini buses to run on its routes to destinations in the provinces, possibly in November. The renting process is expected to be finished in two months. The mini bus is eight million THB costlier than the commuter van, but operators saw it worthy to invest as it will have longer working service. Operators are asking the ministry for a longer concession of up to 40 years. For operators of commuter vans, they are also seeking permission for extension of service to 14 years from 10 years. Mr. Smithichai Hongthong, an academic on financial aid for foreign tourists of the MITS, reported that the ministry was setting up the yearly fund to exclusively help foreign visitors in Thailand who suffer from terrorism, natural disaster, body attack, sexual assault, accident, stealing of property and travel interruption. Any foreign tourists can obtain financial compensation only when the above-mention incidents are proved to take place in Thailand. One million THB will be available for the death or loss of body part(s); 500,000 THB for those who need hospitalisation; 20,000 THB to those who are sexually assaulted or whose travel plans HUA HIN TODAY, November 2017
from Thailand is unexpectedly interrupted; 6,000 THB to those who have their property robbed or stolen. Tourists experiencing such incidents should immediately inform tourism authorities working in the area where the incidents occur so that they will work with the local police to investigate the case and report it to the MTS officials within 30 days. The financial aid recently set up by the MTS aims to give more confidence to foreign visitors in Thailand, particularly those carrying a passport with a tourist visa. Foreigners working in Thailand will not be considered.
Jatuporn Burussapat, the directorgeneral of the department, said that in a survey of Patong beach, Phuket, conducted by the department’s research and development centre, an average of 130,000 cigarette butts were found on every 2.5-kilometre stretch of the beach. According to Thai PBS, statistics compiled by countries with beaches, cigarette packages and filters constitute one-third of the entire garbage on a beach.

The cigarette butts block drain pipes. In water, they release toxic chemical substances such as cadmium, lead, arsenic and others which are poisonous to the food chain. As empowered by Section 17 of the Marine and Coastal Resources Administration Act, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, in a pilot move, will impose a smoking ban at 20 beaches, starting in November. They include Mae Phim, Laem Sing, Bang Saen, Cha-am, Khao Takiab, Bo Phut, Sai Ree, PaTong, Pattaya, Jomthien and Simira beaches. The ban will in the future be expanded to cover all beaches, Mr Jatuporn said. Smoking areas, with receptacles for cigarette butts, will be arranged for smokers before they walk down the beaches. Those violating the ban will be liable to one year in jail and/or a fine of not exceeding 100,000 THB. In the near future, throwing of cigarette butts from boats as well as smoking on these boats will also be banned.

12 Ratchapakdi Park to Close for 15 Days
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has said that the Army will close its Ratchapakdi Park in Hua Hin for 15 days from November 15th for maintenance.
Orasa Avudhkhom, director of the Prachuap Khiri Khan Office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said her office has reached an agreement with the Thanarat Fort, which is in charge of the park, to close it for maintenance of the sculptures of the seven great kings of Thailand. Workers would also use the period to restore landscaping in the park, she added. The park, which features giant statues of the kings, is located at the Army Noncommissioned Officer School and is opposite the Suanson Pradiphat Army recreation site. Ms Orasa said the park had been visited by more than 600,000 people from July 1 to Sept. 25.

Health Chief Urges Contraception for Teens
In a bid to prevent premature pregnancy among Thai teens, Health Department Chief Dr Wachira Pengchan is calling for girls aged 10 to 20 to receive a free contraceptive implant at any of the nationwide medical facilities registered for Universal Coverage (UC) under the National Health Security Office (NHSO).
Wachira said the high number of teenage pregnancies, including serial births, was of great concern to his department, hence the support for contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices. “The contraceptive implant is very effective – even more than birth control pills, which the person could forget to take,” he said. About 100,000 Thai teenagers give birth each year, with about 16 per cent of those from a second or further pregnancy. The department has spent the past three years campaigning for the use of contraceptive implants among teenage mothers and so far, 70 per cent of them have had the implants, he said. Mr. Nopporn Vuttikul, Mayor of Hua Hin together with department heads of the Hua Hin Municipality and members of a military unit have visited the Hua Hin Beach to follow up reports of thousands of dead fish littering the beach. This phenomenon occurs almost every year during the rainy season (during of October and November of the year) after heavy rain and fresh water run-off to the sea. Many marine creatures then die due to a lack of oxygen. People had been catching live fish just off the beach to eat and to sell. The dead fish soon started giving off an unpleasant smell and were gathered up from the sand and sold to animal feed producers. Military Unit helped to clear the dead fish from the beach as bad smells had begun to affect beach-goers.

To earn money to fund the Nawamin Bophit Building at the Siriraj Hospital, Thai movie star and model Metinee Kingpayoom with Piya Sawetpikul an actor and producer were participating as ‘Team Lukkade’, as promoters of the ‘Walk for Life Project. for treatment of a respiratory condition. The Nawamin Bophit building will become a one-stop specialised medical centre to accommodate and service many patients, particularly those with a low income. The True Group arranged a special means of contributing to the project via an SMS by typing the word “100” and sending to 91219 to donate 100 THB to the project. However well-wishers along the route of over 200 kilometres were enthusiastic and generous donors and a tally of over 8 million THB was achieved. Mission accomplished by Team Lukkade!

Gastronomy tourism and local food are being highlighted in a new tourism campaign, says Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul “Gastronomy makes up around onethird of tourist expenditures. But food can be a larger portion of their budget as Thailand offers a variety of foods, ranging from local to international dishes,” Mrs Kobkarn said. A national tourism campaign called Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018 is set to focus on local experiences including food and gastronomy. This year, CNN awarded Bangkok with the top rating for best street food in the world for the second straight year. Following Bangkok were Tokyo, Honolulu, Durban, New Orleans, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Paris, Mexico City, Cairo, Marrakesh, Cartagena
(Colombia), Portland (Oregon), Dakar, Bali, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, Miami, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and Beijing. Last year, gastronomy tourism generated 329 billion THB or 20% of total tourism income in Thailand, following accommodation (29%) and shopping and souvenirs (24%). The Tourism and Sports Ministry reported that the top five markets for gastronomy tourism are China, Russia, Britain, Malaysia and the US. Chinese tourists spent 83.3 billion THB on food last year, a 19% increase from 2015. Russians contributed 20.8 billion THB for food in 2016, up 32% from the previous year, while the British
spent 18.4 billion, a 10% increase. Malaysians contributed 16.1 billion THB, up 7%, while Americans spent 13.9 billion, an 18% increase. A top luxury retail operator, EM District, will organise Dinner in the Sky, an exclusive Bangkok event for food lovers. World-famous chefs will be invited to the event. From Jan 1 to Oct 11 this year, 26.9 million foreigners travelled to Thailand and generated tourism income of 1.37 trillion THB, increases of 5.6%
and 7.6%, respectively, from the same period the previous year. China remained first for international arrivals, with 7.63 million. During China’s Golden Week holiday from Oct 1 to 8, some 227,648 Chinese travelled to Thailand. The World Diabetes Day 2017 campaign will promote the importance of affordable and equitable access for all women at risk for or living with diabetes to the essential diabetes medicines and technologies, selfmanagement education and information they require to achieve optimal diabetes outcomes and strengthen their capacity to prevent type 2 diabetes. There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes and this total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040. Gender roles and power dynamics influence vulnerability to diabetes, affect access to health services and health seeking behavior for women, and amplify the impact of diabetes on women. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year. As a result of socioeconomic conditions, girls and women with diabetes experience barriers in accessing cost-effective diabetes prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, particularly in developing countries.
Socioeconomic inequalities expose women to the main risk factors of diabetes, including poor diet and nutrition, physical inactivity, tobacco consumption and harmful use of alcohol. Two out of every five women with diabetes are of reproductive age, accounting for over 60 million women worldwide. Women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have poor pregnancy outcomes. Without preconception planning, type 1 and type 2 diabetes can result in a significantly higher risk of maternal and child mortality and morbidity. Approximately one in seven births is affected by gestational diabetes (GDM), a severe and neglected threat to maternal and child health. Many women with GDM experience pregnancy related complications including high blood pressure, large birth weight babies and obstructed labour. A significant number of women with GDM also go on to develop type 2 diabetes resulting in further healthcare complications and costs.

Municipal Offices Now Open 7 Days a Week A decision of the national government means that municipal office across the country will now be open seven days per week rather than the previous Monday to Friday open days. 22 Comments on the Charming Character of Cha-Am
Cha-Am is a mere 25 kilometres north of Hua Hin; but it’s a very different place. Although development along this coastal strip continues to expand and the boundary between the two towns becomes blurred, Cha-Am retains a character of its own with many foreigners drawn to this charming seaside village When it comes to ways to make Cha-Am a better place to live, three problems were almost always mentioned; stray dogs, rubbish and traffic management. Our respondents suggest that these problems are not unique to Cha-Am, affecting foreigners wherever they live in Thailand. Accidents and injury from roaming stray dogs have long been discussed by the ex-pat population. The good news is that a local organisation ‘Stray Dogs Rescue Cha-Am’ is making inroads on the dog population and there is now an opportunity to support a monthly capture, neuter, vaccinates and release campaign. General cleanliness, but particularly rubbish on the beach was a frequent source of comment. For example “a cleaner beach without all the weekend revelers leaving their rubbish and animals behind; more trash cans on the beach.”
At the end of the fishing pier; twin squids are a Cha-Am landmark To explore this appeal, Hua Hin Today asked local expats two simple questions; not as a definitive survey, but to give an insight to the character of Cha-Am. 1. What are the things that you like the most about living in Cha-Am? 2. What would make Cha-Am a better place to live?
Location was also seen as an important advantage; “centrally located with good transport options”; especially being within easy reach of Bangkok and Hua Hin. Other places may have beaches, but are seen as either too crowded, too expensive or too remote. The location is also blessed with friendly weather and relatively flood and storm free. Golf course access is a bonus but closure of the town driving range has been disappointing.

Traffic management comments were not just about motor vehicles but also bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Apart from driving skills, there were two particular improvements sought when it comes to traffic; parking wasn’t one. Cha-Am is divided into two ‘zones’ by the main highway (Bangkok to Hua Hin). The beach ‘zone’ is about tourism with restaurants, hotels and entertainment. The inland ‘zone’ has businesses, commercial areas and the central markets. Crossing this highway is unavoidable to move between the two ‘zones’. That’s OK in quiet periods at the traffic light controlled intersection, but on busy weekends that changes. Our survey was just after a public holiday weekend when this intersection was blocked (again!) and anyone wanting to move between the two ‘zones’ forced to make a lengthy detour. This is a big issue for locals, including Thai people who may need to make multiple transitions. “A bridge for through traffic at the traffic lights” was suggested.
A beach for everyone with only distant storm clouds and now no smoking! It is very clear that the mix of people who make up the Cha-Am community; both ex-pats and Thai people, is very important. “A good mix of expats and locals”, “friendly local people in a small town environment” and “a great expat community” were typical comments. Being able to mingle with Thai people is valued; for example “weekends with busloads of Thai people make me feel I’m in the heart of Thailand”.

Weekends in Cha-Am are much busier than weekdays, but that’s part of the appeal. “Quiet weekdays, lively weekends” is a desirable combination for many. They enjoy the “relatively quiet, calm, safe and peaceful pace” but also enjoy entertainment options; including music as long as it is live! There is no desire to have ‘Pattaya-style entertainment’; “get rid of the bus station, a breeding ground for trouble” (a bar soi). However some say the nightlife is too quiet and over-policed. More entertainment options for the younger set and couples was generally the preferred way to go.

Commuter access along the beach road could be improved There were also suggestions for better pedestrian and bicycle traffic paths and the inability for these commuters to safely move along the beach road. Although some recent changes have reduced obstructed footpaths, the locals think there’s still a long way to go. In summary the expats of Cha-Am say that they enjoy the best of both worlds. Quiet but lively, cosmopolitan but the real Thailand and with all the conveniences they need; ………………..….. well almost! Some desirable additions would be a mall or shopping centre and an upgraded hospital. “Cha Am is a fantastic place to stay - it`s not a ‘tourist machine’ like the more well-known places in Thailand - cheap, and you feel that you are living among real Thai people”. Whether the Hua Hin ‘encroachment’ will soon make a difference to this idyllic community remains to be seen. But with just a few basic improvements; local ex-pats say that life’s pretty good in Cha-Am! When the bike lanes were first constructed it was a lovely ride but now unfortunately the path is in need of some drastic maintenance to stop the bicycle lanes falling into disrepair. 28 Riding a Motorcycle Taxi Safely
In most Thai cities and towns many of the locals travel by motorcycle taxi. All over Hua Hin at the end of small streets and on the corners of intersections you will see groups of Thai men (and a few women) congregated.
They will be wearing a plastic vest (usually orange) with a number on it. These are the Thai motorcycle taxi drivers and they can take you to most places, much quicker than most other forms of transportation due to their ability to weave in and out of traffic. If you are in a car you can wait at a red light while motorcycle taxis have long since gone as they weave in and out of cars to get to the front of the line. When the light changed to green, they were the first away. Many people use motorcycle taxis because of the speed but to do it right (and safely!) you have to know a few rules.
Even though motorcycle taxi drivers probably have the best safety record of any motorcyclists on the road, it’s very unusual to see a driver without a helmet. However they don’t often have spare helmets; if they do and offer it to you, take it and wear it. If you are a frequent user, you may want to find a regular driver that does. Why not take your own helmet? If you are heading for a restaurant, bar or office, it won’t be hard to find a safe place to keep it. 2. Hold Onto The Bar at The Back. It’s not particularly acceptable to hold onto the motorcycle taxi driver when riding behind him on a motorcycle taxi. It’s more polite to hold onto the small bar at the back of the bike seat and not hold the driver around the waist. Even when riding side saddle, most Thai women still hold onto the bar at the back of the bike and not to the motorcycle driver.

Even if the car is stationary and you are not, a hard knock against it could lead to a broken knee or elbow, or even knock you off the bike. So tuck in any protruding limb. This also goes for any bags or parcels you are carrying. Make sure you hold them close to your body so they’re not in danger of being knocked off when you pass a car. 5. Ask The Driver To Slow Down. It’s completely acceptable to ask a driver to slow down “Bpai Chaa Chaa”, and most of them will. There is no point taking a white-knuckled ride, when a quick request will make them slow down and give you a safer ride. 6. Sit Astride the Motorbike.

3. Make Sure You Look Ahead. Make sure you are constantly aware of what is going on ahead of you. It is much safer to be able to predict an upcoming collision or accident and brace yourself accordingly, than it is to be suddenly catapulted off the bike because you weren’t paying attention to what is happening on the road ahead of you. 4. Keep Your Knees and Elbows In. All the motorcycle taxi drivers weave in and out of traffic, and they often come very close to the cars they are going past. If you’re not used to it and don’t know what you’re doing, it can be very dangerous. Dress in a way to keep your modest intact while sitting astride the bike. Electric Tuk-Tuks Are Coming! the ‘Bzzt-Bzzt’ for Thailand & the World
Call them tuk tuks, auto rickshaws, mototaxis or any one of several other names, but they’re one of the world’s most ubiquitous vehicles – three wheeled motorised people-movers They’ve been a fixture on roads in Asia, South America, Africa and Italy for decades, and have more recently made their way into other European countries, USA and making their presence felt around the world. The electric motor means that unlike their gasoline counterparts, an electric tuktuk doesn’t make the distinctive “tuk-tuk” noise’; sounding more like ‘Bzzt Bzzt’! Thailand’s energy policymakers have promoted the first commercial launch of electric vehicles (EVs), starting by offering a 106 million THB subsidy to encourage tuk-tuk owners to switch over from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with the Energy ministry wanting to make the Tuk-Tuk a product champion
Thailand’s tuk-tuk may soon be replaced by an EV look-alike The subsidy comes from the Energy Conservation Fund (ECF) and will be granted to the first 100 tuk-tuk owners who switch to EVs. The subsidy covers the cost of converting the vehicles’ engines to be EVcompatible. The subsidy is part of a project to promote EVs and EV facilities in Thailand, as the country aims to become a regional EV hub over the next several years. EPPO director Thawarat Suttabutra revealed that the Ministry of Energy plans to convert all 22,000 Tuk-Tuks in the country to run on electricity within 5 years Last year, the ECF allocated more than 120 million THB in project finance for the development of 150 EV charging units in Bangkok and its outskirts, of which 79 are already up and running. The other 71 units are scheduled to be operational by the end of next year. Fuel consumption of LPG-powered Tuk-Tuk is described as 1.50 THB per kilometre while e-Tuk-Tuk is just 40 satang and travelling between 70-100 kilometres when the battery is fully charged.
Chiang Mai’s electric tuk tuks have been approved In June Chiang Mai’s Nakorn Lanna Cooperative announced that their request to
bring 450 electric tuk-tuks to Chiang Mai has been approved by the Department of Land Transport. The new plan will see 450 new three-wheel electric commercial vehicles roll out. A spokesman said that prices would average 80 – 100 THB per trip. The initiative is aimed at helping reduce congestion in the city while also reducing pollution levels. There is also Long Beach Aoi Yai, facing SW, it has great sunsets over the looming Myanmar islands further out, this is where all the action is - relatively speaking. If you come in February you might like to witness the Cashew Festival. With a rented motorcycle, go for a gentle spin, cut the engine and scan the sky. You might be lucky and spot, monkeys, fruit bats, tree snakes, squirrels, a sea eagle circling, ready to pounce on it’s prey, or gaze upon majestic hornbills, the island has a large population; best seen in low season. With its driftwood bars, and hand painted signs, Koh Phayam is that lost Koh Samui. It also has accommodation and restaurant prices to match a bygone era. Koh Phayam offers a simple getaway, if you can do without 24 hour electricity, 7-11 convenience, Jet Skis, cars, wild parties and superfast Wi-Fi, then this is the place for you. Lie back in a hammock, prize off the cap of a bottle of beer, pop a cashew or two in your mouth, and look towards a tree, and you may gaze upon a Hornbill. Life couldn’t be better! Bikerboys Hua Hin – Exploring the Countryside on Two Wheels
There is a group of friends of different nationalities living in Hua Hin that enjoy riding together on small motorbikes (max. 150 cc) exploring around Hua Hin and sharing some good laughs.
Bikerboys is not about biking for the speed but for touring/adventure type of rides to discover new places and share travel experiences. Every 2 weeks there is a one day trip starting from Hua Hin with a distance of around 150-200 km. Each ride takes place on the 1st and the 3rd Sunday of the month. The group started in November last year and has experienced making trips to many beautiful spots around Hua Hin. This is open to all bikers, male and female, with a motorcycle licence. Some experience in motorbike driving is necessary. The priority is safety; therefore riders are given a short briefing on the rules of riding safely in a group before starting a tour. 375 Tips for Successful Rental for Competing Condo Owners Since 2013, some 10,000 units have been introduced to the thailand condominium market every year and now there are around 72,000 of them, of which 35-40 per cent are for rent. Many owners choose cheap furniture that often doesn’t look good and tends to fall apart very easily, which leads to less satisfaction by tenants. Then others overdo the decoration, using furniture and decorations that are overly expensive, making it difficult to recoup the money spent in rental income. Also, the design may not appeal to a particular lessee.
Competition for condo owners to attract quality expat tenants is high and recently, luxury units have begun to enter the market in quantity, giving renters even more high-quality choices. The usual mix of property details such as location, building design, facilities, building management, brand image and rental rates will continue to drive the overall decision-making process, which is mostly out of the control of the owner. What the owner can control are aspects such interior decoration. A condo’s decorations can provide a competitive edge over other units in the same building. Here are a few tips that can help set your unit apart. First is furniture and fixtures. Most new condos today come fully fitted out, which means they have complete bathrooms, basic kitchens with a sink, stovetop, vent hood and cupboards, as well as air-conditioners and built-in wardrobes. The items that need to be added are furniture and appliances.

The official open ceremony will be hosted by Mr Suwat Liptapanlop on 6th November.

There are also be everyday ‘return the serve’ challenges with prizes to be won by spectators who are lucky to return the pro players serve. However the writer, local Cha-Am identity Kolbjorn Moe, wasn’t warning really warning about their driving skills on the golf course or forecasting an incident during a warm-up round at the Kaeng Krachan Golf Course. A golf buggy being used by two Members of the Cha-Am Golf Club, who had joined the travellers, somehow ended up nose-first in a green side lake. The warning message probably should have been directed towards those Members rather than to the Wirkola Cup players. One comment was to mention a wellknown quote by Dean Martin, “if you drink, don’t drive, don’t even putt!” However a reliable witness swears that alcohol was not involved.

Delicious Italian Dining at Dorigo’s
Amongst European cuisine, it’s fair to say that Italian stands out as a worldwide favourite, arguably eclipsing French, Greek, German or any other country’s offering
When it comes to Thailand, Italian food continues to grow in favour, especially amongst the young who may have first discovered a pizza of the fast food variety. However the owner and chef at Dorigo’s says that after they discover a real pizza, it’s very hard to go back to fast food. Eugenio Dorigo or Khun Jay as he is better known has both Italian (from Venice) and Thai parentage. That’s a heritage which gives him an edge over the competition as a young entrepreneur with his own Italian restaurant in Hua Hin. He proudly displays his Italian grandfather’s artwork around the walls of the simple but immaculate premises situated within easy reach of the town centre. There are assistants on hand, but it’s very clear that Dorigo’s is Jay’s place and his personal touch is what gives the restaurant its identity. The Italian word ‘trattoria’ means a family run, inexpensive dining establishment with an informal atmosphere and that’s a good description of Dorigo’s.
A Dorigo pizza has Chef Jay’s own interpretation of this Italian cuisine staple. The home-made base needs to stand for between 48 and 60 hours before the pizza is cooked with quality ingredients, rather than elaborate preparation being the key. Apart from pizza and pasta dishes it must be said that Italians enjoy going out for a good steak, but a steak in Italy isn’t necessarily an individual slab. Beef Tagliatta is essentially a nice thick piece of beef that is grilled then carved; perfect with Italian house wine. It’s simple and delicious either seasoned only with salt or using lots of coarsely crushed black peppercorns, as well as garlic and rosemary. Other choices include crispy skinned Norwegian salmon with imported fresh fish (not frozen) and to stray further away from the Italian theme, Chef Jay’s experiences at an Irish pub in Bangkok means that he’s open for other suggestions. Irish stew may need prior notice but fish and chips; a favourite across the British Isles is always on the
menu. Chocolate Lava Cake with Ice Cream or homemade Tiramisu are specialty deserts. Dorigo’s is a contemporary restaurant with Chef Jay representing a new generation of Thai restaurateurs with a traditional background but eager to add their own twist to established favourites. This is a great place for dinner with friends with seating for up to 60 and without the parking problems of downtown Hua Hin. You’ll also experience the personal attention to detail directly from Khun Jay as the owner operator. A special Christmas menu is now being planned so an early reservation for this festive occasion will be an easy solution as a venue for your celebrations. Thais love eating noodle soup with soup shops and mobile street vendors everywhere, though it can sometimes be quite daunting to the uninitiated. We have some tips about ordering noodles from our ‘foodie on the street’, Leigh Higgins There are many different types of noodle soups sold in Thailand, however many travellers may walk past the queue without ordering because of their uncertainty. Many noodle soups are of Chinese origin, however Thailand has developed her own flavours. Noodle soup is called Guay Tiaw, which can be eaten morning, noon and night, as a quick and versatile meal. Most vendors will specialise in one or two types of Guay Tiaw, so it is as easy as picking your type of noodle and adding a protein. The most common Guay Tiaw soups are:
tofu, slices of water morning glory, rectangles of coagulated blood and a big crispy wonton chip. It may be served dry or with the broth and ingredients together.
Guay Tiaw Tom Yum • A hot ‘n’ sour, spicy soup flavoured with lime juice, dried chilli and ground nuts and often includes liver, pork balls and a crispy wonton for texture. Variations on the broth are Nam Sai • A clear broth or Nam Khon / Nam Deang • A dark broth with a sweetness, enhanced by spices. Yen Ta Fo • A sweet and sour pink soup which gets it colour and flavour from fermented soybean paste. It is often served with pork, fish balls, fish cake, slices of squid, fried

Additional toppings may include deep fried garlic, coriander and spring onions.
It is also possible to order these soups done dry. Most of the soups are not spicy, so it’s great for those averse to chilli. At every soup vendor, a condiment set is on the table so you can flavour it to your taste. The typically Thai flavours of hot, sour, sweet and salty can be adjusted to suit your taste. Taste first, then adjust; everyone does it! Note from Leigh: Writing this was challenging, as for something so seemingly simple as a noodle soup, there are so many variations, however I found my favourite soups all by accident; by pointing, nodding and saying yes; Chai Kha/ Khrap. Most soups range from 20 to 50 THB.

Name: Sea Salt Crusted Sea Bass Description: Whole sea bass baked in a herbed salt crust served with spring vegetables and salsa Ingredients: Whole sea bass, flour, rock sea salt, egg white, fresh thyme, dry oregano, fresh dill, lemon, pepper. Sauce: chopped garlic, diced fresh tomatoes, fresh rosemary, lemon juice, olive oil, chopped parsley, salt Method: Prepare the sea salt crust 24 hours in advance then clean the fish and stuff with fresh dill and lemon with fresh ground black pepper.
Cover the fish with the sea salt dough and bake for 35 minutes at 220 C. For the sauce just mix all the ingredients together. A tip to make the dish special: Prepare fermented dough made with sea salt and leave at least 1 night so the brine permeates the dough and the salt is absorbed into the meat, making the fish taste better.

539 ‘Laap’ • A Must Try Salad in Thailand!
Sitting just behind Som Tam for popularity, Laap is one of the most beloved salads in the Thai culinary repertoire. We have asked our ‘foodie around town’, Leigh Higgins from Feast Thailand, about Laap and what makes this salad stand out! Laap is an ancient salad, possibly originating in the Yunnan Province of southwest China. The merchants of this part of China, the Chin Haw, may have helped to spread this dish throughout Myanmar, northern and northeastern Thailand along with Laos, where it is the unofficial national dish. The laap you will find more commonly across Thailand as a version from the Northeast, or Isaan region. This cooked salad generally consists of a minced protein gently simmered in a little water or stock. To this, a dressing is added which consists of lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, ground, dry-roasted dried red chillies and, very importantly, Khao Khua, which is ground, dry-roasted sticky rice, which gives this salad its specific nutty flavour and adds a crunchy texture. Coriander and mint leaves and chopped spring onions finish off the dish. Laap is most commonly made with minced pork or chicken, but in Thailand, fish like Pla Duk (Catfish) is also popular. Laap Pla Duk will sometimes have a paste-like texture or the fish may be in slightly bigger pieces and crispy; either way, it is very delicious. It is often served with a side dish of raw green beans, cabbage and Thai basil or other leafy green vegetables.
There are times you will find a laap will be slightly different; meatier in flavour, containing liver or other offal and with more herbs added to the protein. This depends on where in Isaan the cook comes from, as this region is vast, with land borders with both Laos and Cambodia, thus influencing how the dish is prepared. In the north, which borders Myanmar and Laos, they serve a very different version of this salad. Fish sauce is omitted, as is lime juice or any other souring agent. Often animal blood is added to add to flavour. In Chiang Mai an elaborate mix of dried spices are used to season their version of laap, including cumin, cloves, star anise, long pepper, cinnamon and prickly ash seeds. Many of these spices became a part of the Lanna Kingdom’s cuisine. With the addition of roasted aromatic vegetables, this mix is pounded to a smooth paste in a mortar and pestle. Called Nam Phrik Laap, this mix is used to season the laap in the cooking stage. The resultant dish is more rounded in flavour, with a much more slow-acting heat, slight bitter undertones and an almost floral sweetness. Laap is best eaten with sticky rice,(Khao Niaw). If you are someone trying to keep your carbs down, head for a laap and with the addition of the side dishes, it makes a great high protein meal.
It is very simple to find laap, as every Isaan restaurant will have it on the menu. I would love to say my favourite Isaan places, but the list would be far too long. I find that a humble vendor on a side street can make just as awesome a laap as a restaurant; it’s really about giving it a try. Seeking out northern restaurants or vendors around Hua Hin is a little more difficult, but here are two of the best: Khun Wanphen on Phetkhasem Soi Hua Hin 50, or there are two ladies at the very local Dinosaur Market, Soi Chonprathan 62 (near Wat Khao Noi). They sell exclusively northern food, including a spectacular northern rendition of laap. Note from the Editor: You will see laap written in many different ways, just like the word Isaan; they all mean the same thing; a delicious cooked salad from a great region.

11 55 Not Your Usual Street Market: Pranburi Old City Market Every Saturday night in Pranburi, the old city transforms its narrow streets into a not-so-typical night market. It’s where local heritage meets the new for a unique market experience
The province of Pranburi is home to an old town with a market aged over 200 years old. One of the first things you notice about this night market is that it is a stroll through yesteryear; with some modern touches thrown in. This market is aimed squarely at the locals rather than international tourists; this helps keeps its ‘old world’ charm. As you meander through the streets you walk past traditional wooden houses, many having been converted to coffee shops or antique stores; it’s rustic, yet very real. There are shopkeepers selling second hand clothes, others household items and even a natural healer selling roots and herbs for soothing ailments traditionally. Some of the vendors put blankets down and spread out their wares for sale, giving the market a sense of community. You will find new things for sale, like the obligatory t-shirt seller, though it’s also mixed with a stand selling locally made honey and another offering paintings by local artists. The market street is an a ‘L’ shape, with the middle being the food hub where the local vendors cook a vast range of Thai street foods, along with a smattering of
international dishes, like pasta and pizza thrown in. Grab some food, take a seat and enjoy the atmosphere. Along the way, there are vendors dotted throughout selling everything from sweets to fried potato sticks, snacks and fairy floss; there really is something for everyone. Two shops you must visit are Prod Pran coffee shop and Baan Ama souvenir shop; both offer great photo opportunities, as they are adorned with many retro items; they are just a short distance from each other. Prod Pran is a coffee shop in an old shop house where you can sit atop the upstairs balcony and watch the world go by. You’ll know the place when you see it, as it’s probably the most photographed shop in the market; and for good reason. Giving the market its character are all the local characters, such as the elderly man spinning records on a corner outside the antique shop; casually sipping whiskey and chatting to passers by. It’s also the stallholders who are willing to have a chat, pose for a photo or talk with the kids that make this such a great family outing. As there is so much to see and you don’t want to miss
out on anything, I suggest you walk up one side, turn around and come back on the other. This allows you a couple of hours exploring as well as photo memories. The best time to arrive is around dusk when the crowds are just starting to build and the vendors are set up and ready to sell. The market starts from around 5pm and finishes at 9.30pm.
