From the Editor October 1st is a Blú Day for Hua Hin. That’s not to suggest that anyone should feel sad or walk around with a long face; in fact just the opposite!

We’ve made a big deal about events leading up to the grand opening of the Blúport Resort Mall for good reason. The opening marks the commencement of yet another stage in the development of Hua Hin as our city marches towards more international standards and higher levels of sophistication. These standards have also been recognised by some authorities as steps are taken to improve pedestrian walkways and upgrade policing techniques. It also seems that the battle to enforce orders made by the Provincial Court some 2 years ago to remove buildings encroaching over city beaches near to the fishing pier may soon be engaged in earnest. Thailand has witnessed similar situations in a number of other locations when local businesses with a long history of occupying sites not considered to be meeting legal requirements, have staunchly resisted similar orders. It may take a steely resolve by all the official authorities involved before the ocean frontage on the northern end of Naresdamri Road is open once again to the ocean. One suggestion is for a replacement boardwalk for a way to enjoy the ocean breezes during an evening stroll. We trust that you enjoy our content as Hua Hin Today also strives for higher standards and sophistication. The Center is located in the Bon Kai area, west of the railway in Hua Hin. It started its work on 1st July 2016. Wanna to be Chairperson of HHCC for One More Term

Pavement Repairs For Petchakasem Road Hua Hin Municipality in cooperation of the Hua Hin Highway Authority is planning to improve the pavements along Petchakasem Road.

In August the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul and the deputy mayor attended a meeting with members of the Hua Hin Cultural Council (HHCC), with an agenda to find the next HHCC Chairperson. The participants agreed that Mrs. Wanna Choksuchart would be the Chairperson for one more term, thanks to her dedication and past works recognised by both Thais and foreigners. Mrs. Wanna has been an active worker on many cultural events and activities, particularly a student contest of Thai etiquettes, a Dharma lecture by Buddhist monks for youths, a standard classical Thai dance, a traditional Thai dress event, a concert of Thai folk songs, and a children’s contest about Thai culture.

she should chair the council for one term, she is pleased to keep working with the current 38 members who helped her throughout the previous term. The HHCC secretary will be Dr. Thaweesak Dechapanya. The HHCC is discussing the annual December event which will aim to present Thai culture to foreign tourists and Thai visitors. The event is likely to be held at Phon Kingphet Memorial Park as in previous years, announced Mrs. Wanna.

The Chairman of the coordinating committee, Mr. Siraphan Kamolpramot has held a meeting to discuss how to improve the pavement from the intersection near the Hua Hin Municipality to Chiva Som, as the pavement is currently studded with billboards and advertising signs that affect driving conditions. Some of the pavement is damaged, or dominated by sellers.

The highlight that is most recognised by people in Hua Hin is her work on organising events to celebrate Thai Mother and Father Day’s to commemorate the birthday of Their Majesties the King and the Queen. Each activity that Mrs. Wanna has initiated and organised boosts the positive image of Hua Hin. They are examples that the cultural councils in other provinces of Thailand would like to follow in order to foster and promote their local tradition and culture. The award-winner of the Ministry of Culture, Mrs. Wanna admitted that she had become tired during her last term and would like other members to chair the HHCC as many of them are well-qualified. However, since most of the HHCC members approved that

Access for the disabled is also an issue and some planted trees are damaged, affecting the overall landscape of the city. Mr. Aphikhun Sirakhunchai, who designed the pavement, is involved in planning the pavement renovation with the Municipality which is responsible for repairs. The municipality will continue repairs to pavements on Damnern Kasem, Sra Song, Chom Sin and other roads in the city.

5 A Confident Run For Hua Hin Run For Hua Hin is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 starting at the True Arena in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand

It is hoped the event will boost the image and confidence in Hua Hin as a tourism destination while also increasing visitors and revenue for the town.

Dr Tawee Narissirikul, Prachuap Kiri Khan Governor said, “The Half Marathon race is intended to stimulate the tourism industry in the province and build confidence among tourism operators.

Tough Action Urged Against Hua Hin Beach Encroachers

Hua Hin police and administrative officials will take action on 52 structures encroaching on the city’s beach, two years after a court ruling.

“The event committee has been established from various agencies, in order to facilitate smooth operations and to ensure safety along the race route, which will be managed by the Royal Thai Police.

The event is supported by major Thai sponsors such as Blu Port Resort Mall, True Corporation, Thai Life Insurance, MahaSamutr Development, Park 24 Project, Gems Gallery as well as Proud Real Estate; Vana Nava Hua Hin Water Park and Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort. Proud Real Estate, Mr Suwat Liptapanlop, Chairman and former deputy prime minister of Thailand said, “Run For Hua Hin will be one of the biggest running events in Hua Hin with a target of 10,000 runners. The event will highlight Hua Hin as a key destination for tourism again, and will build confidence among Thai and foreign tourists and the tourism sector as a whole. “The provincial governor himself is leading the organising committee for this event. I would like to invite runners, athletes and tourists who love running to join the race then relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the town. “Hua Hin is ready to welcome visitors and participants to join the run. Amateurs and professionals from Thailand and overseas can enter without any subscription fees. The run will create a fun, exciting atmosphere to help revive the travel business by welcoming everyone,” he added.

“We firmly believe that the Run For Hua Hin will help restore confidence and strengthen Hua Hin’s reputation as a top destination amongst local and international tourists,” he concluded. Ms Proudputh Liptapanlop, Executive Director of Proud Real Estate, the leading property developer in Hua Hin said, “We believe strongly in Hua Hin as a world class destination for sporting events. There will be three categories: a Half Marathon covering a distance of 21 km, a Mini Marathon covering a distance of 10.5 km and a Fun Run covering a distance of 5 km. The events are open to men and women of any age and the races start from 4.00 a.m. at True Arena Hua Hin.”

Run For Hua Hin Schedule: Sunday, October 9th, 201, 04.00 Register and receive event T-shirt, 05.00 Half Marathon 21 km starts, 06.00 Mini Marathon 10.5 km and Fun Run 5 km starts, Runners and spectators who are interested in joining Run For Hua Hin can register online at www. runforhuahin.com or at True Arena Hua Hin, Prachuap Kiri Khan, entry is free.

The buildings, comprising seafood restaurants, guesthouses and homes, are located from the Fishing Pier on the northern end of Naresdamri Road, which runs parallel to the beach, to Chaomae Tubtim Shrine. Pol Col Chatchai Riamek, acting commander of Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial police, said on the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Court ruled in 2014 in a case brought by the Hua Hin Municipality and the Marine Department in 2003 that owners of the 52 buildings had violated the 1979 Building Control Act and had to dismantle the structures. The court also issued arrest warrants for several of the defendants for failing to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling. However, police have not arrested any of them while the Hua Hin municipality has yet to enforce the demolition order. Pol Col Chatchai said he had instructed Hua Hin police chief, Pol Col Chaiyakorn Sriladaecho, to coordinate with the municipality and report the progress in the case. Hua Hin district chief Sutthipong Khlai-udom said a joint team of officials would descend on the encroached beach and expedite law enforcement on charges of encroaching on public land and

polluting sea water. The team includes police of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division, soldiers from the Internal Security Operations Command and officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and the Office of Public Sector AntiCorruption Commission. “They will also take action against responsible officials who have violated Section 157 [of the Criminal Code] for dereliction of duty because some encroachers are investors with close links to certain local politicians and influential figures. So local officials have not enforced the court order,” Sutthipong said. Meanwhile, Hua Hin mayor Nopporn Wuthikul told Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Tawee Naritsirikul that responsible authorities should proceed cautiously because the information used during the trial might no longer be up-todate, according to local reports. Some of the structures might have been modified or changed hands over the past few years. He therefore urged officials to examine carefully the structures that needed to be pulled down and identify the owners. – Bangkok Post

Hua Hin Police To Use Hi-Tech Inspection Devices for Maximum Crime Prevention The Deputy Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police and the Deputy Commissioner General of the Police Office Region 7 in Thailand have provided intelligent helmets and motorcycles to police officers in Hua Hin, aiming to take care of and safeguard both Thai and foreign people in the city. In September Deputy Commissioner General Police General Wuth Liptapanlop, who is responsible for taking care of tourist attractions throughout Thailand, reviewed the work of Hua Hin police, especially crime, firearms and illicit drug issues. He asked

the police to continue their active work to boost safety in the city. Police General Wuth asked Police Major General Surachai Khuandechakup, the Deputy Commissioner General of the Police Office Region 7, to provide police inspectors with 20 intelligent helmets and Honda motorcycles. The helmets, with a very small video camera attached, can record incidents in which the police are involved as evidence for legal prosecution. Produced by Thai technicians, the intelligent helmets cost 2,000 THB. They will be Hua

Hin as a trial and if they are proved to be effective and efficient, the Royal Thai Police Office will then provide them to all police officers in Thailand.

high from October to December this year. The Hua Hin police have to work hard in monitoring beaches and entertainment venues.

“I’ve been informed that, in terms of safety in Hua Hin, many tourists are confident with the work of our officers so that reservations for hotels and guesthouses here are very

They should also work with local administrators and tourist police officers to produce maximum safety,” concluded Pol. Gen. Wuth.

HUA HIN TODAY, October 2016

Visiting Supaluck Umpujh; the Blúport Visionary Supaluck Umpujh is Vice President of The Mall Group that owns Bangkok’s Siam Paragon and Emporium, The EmQuartier shopping complex and dubbed the ‘iron lady’ of retail in Thailand. Our meeting was at ‘Belle Baan’ (French/ Thai - beautiful house), the gracious home of Khun Supaluck; set within a green leafy garden with many stone sculptures just a lane away from one of the busier Bangkok thoroughfares. Our meeting was with an equally gracious host driven by an artistic passion, genuine enthusiasm and determination. Khun Supaluck showed us an earlier photo of the Blúport site with a small house where she has fond memories of childhood family holidays. The Blúport development is

driven by her personal experiences in Hua Hin, as well as her commercial motivation. Khun Supaluck is a hands-on project manager, designer, interior decorator and concept developer. What can now be seen at Blúport is an extension of her style and perhaps an insight to her personality. Because of Khun Supaluck there are whimsical nautical themes with fun and colour as well as culture, style and practicality on show. If you wear a blue and

white sailor-suit you’ll fit in fine! Khun Supaluck is also behind an exhibition of water-painting by internationally renowned artists featuring a massive mural some 15 metres long which may be some sort of world record. The exhibition commences at Blúport from the opening day on 1st October with paintings available by auction. On the thornier issues of traffic management and other infrastructure needs, Khun Supaluck is informed, alert and ready with the solutions. For example there has been a substantial land purchase behind Blúport to allow an expanded rear access and to ease main road congestion. This was a comfortable conversation rather than an interview with the driving force behind Blúport. Our thanks to Khun Supaluck for sharing her insights and infectious optimism. 8 A Buddhist Blessing for Blúport A Buddhist blessing conferred by monks on the premises is a necessary ritual for the success and good fortune of any new project, including a new family home or a small business. In this case a dedicated ceremony was also important for the prosperity and future success of Blúport. On September 22nd that blessing was conferred in an elaborate and colourful ceremony attended by an array of religious leaders, dignitaries both local and the developers’ executive. It was a serious though warm-hearted expression of support and encouragement by the assembled well-wishers welcoming the Blúport family to the Hua Hin community.

Full Steam Ahead! Meanwhile an escorted stroll through Blúport’s ground floor revealed a scene resembling something akin to an active beehive, with literally hundreds of ‘worker bees’ busily at work to ensure that the opening in just 10 days time (1st October) will be a success. This was a 24 hour hours, 7 days a week effort.

Joining Blúport at The Kui Buri National Park

“Yes we can!” was the message displayed by the very motivated workers who were pulling out all stops to be ready on time. I’m not a gambling man but my expectation is that they’ll make the deadline.

Well before the doors opened at Blúport, we were able to join the management and staff on a visit to the Kui Buri National Park. This was a team building exercise combined with an early CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity. Ms. Kritsana Umput and Mr. Pasu Liptapanlop lead the Bluport team who were honoured by the presence of Prachuap Khirikhan Deputy Governor, Mr. Pongpan Wichiansamut. The visit included a novel way of aiding re-forestation of the park. Apart from the usual way of planting trees (you know, digging a hole and establishing a young sapling); rubber powered sling-shots were on hand to fire large, stone-like seed pods deep into the jungle. The Park Rangers know from experience that many of the seed pods will sprout. Establishing re-growth this way means that visitors are not tramping through the undergrowth, disturbing both flora and fauna. The group’s wildlife observations were limited to seeing very distant elephants and gaurs; the large wild bovines. However it’s understandable that these naturally shy creatures would not venture too close to the nearly 100 Blúport visitors. Although keeping quiet and being well behaved, the group was bound to be conspicuous.

9 Husband Minding at The Wednesday Night Market Cha-Am

If you go to the Cha-Am Wednesday Night Market you may choose to enter on the left where a lane takes you past a variety of food stalls. About 100 metres on the left side and you will come across one of the features of the Market. This is a vary innovative ‘extra’ to the usual market scene, the ‘Falang Husband Minding Centre’. This free service provides for the care, protection and safety of many falang husbands who are not ‘brousers’ while their wives go about their shopping without concerns. Husbands will then be out from under your feet, not complaining (“when are we going home”) and your shopping can procede undisturbed! All the wives need to do is pay for drinks (usually beer!) then collect them and take them home. The Wednesday Night Market is a Cha-Am institution and a must visit see for every visitor. As soon as the sun goes down a usually quiet part of town comes alive with a huge range of stalls with vendors offering everything imaginable. The Market is not really set up as a tourist attraction and the vast majority of the shoppers are local Thai people, many of whom are there every week. However it’s a great Thai experience for travellers and you can see many of the local produce and products in one venue. The Market is HUGE! It would probably take you an hour just to walk down each ‘shopping lane’ even without actually stopping to buy.

What Will You Find?

Food: from donuts to dumplings, from bugs to biscuits, from chicken to chillies, from cockles to cake, from seafood to sausages and from pasta to popcorn. And of course Thai delicacies too many to mention. For Kids: From stuffed animals to train rides and from bouncy castles to ballons. Kids just wonder around with wide eyes unable to decide on which special treat to take home. For Adults: From electronics to cosmetics, from tools to trophies, from shoes to shoulder bags and as many varieties of t shirts as could could ever imagine. Clothing of all sorts some new, some second hand, some original and some may have ‘fallen of the back of a truck’. Videos, CDs and all the macines to play them. Animals: Puppies, kittens, fish, rabbits and birds. Even some ‘look alikes’ that you eventually realise are really battery powered.

Where is it?

The Market entrance is on Narathip Road starting at the roundabout about 300 metres before the Cha-Am Railway Station. From the intersection of Narathip and Petchaksem Road (traffic lights) if you are comiung from Hua Hin turn left, go straight

on and you can’t miss it. The Market sprawls through a network of lanes alongside the Railway Lines, the Government offices and permanent shops.

When Is It Open?

Every Wednesday from sunset (about 5.30pm) untill about 10.00pm. Early is better as the choice is better and some stall holders may choose to go home early.

Our Tips?

Parking may be difficult for vehicles with more than two wheels, better to leave your car either at home or outside the area and take a motor bike taxi? Transport away from the Market is limited to motor bike taxis, so other arrangements

may need to be made if you have a family group. Don’t eat before you visit or plan to eat later. There is plenty of choice (with drinks) and you can find seating for a very casual (no flash restaurants), entertaining (watch the passing parade) and delicious (try cooked grasshoppers?) Thai style dining experience. Come prepared with suitable footwear. If there is rain about it may be muddy underfoot so no high heels! Take your time. No need to rush around, it’s likely to be busy so just enjoy mingling with the locals.

Our Weekend of Big Bikes, Big Cars and Big Hearts

The weekend of 3rd and 4th September was a weekend full of muscle bikes and muscle cars around Hua Hin and Cha-Am. I love Hua Hin/Strong Together was the overwhelming theme as crowds gathered at the Hua Hin Clock Tower on Saturday evening to continue to show that Hua Hin has recovered from recent tragic events and is moving forward with confidence. Alongside Hua Hin Mayor and other o0fficials the most visible and colorful and sometimes outlandish supporters arrived in

American muscle cars and bikes from the past, including some look alike super heros and even the ‘Batmobile.’ This celebration of Hua Hin as a safe and progressive community really brought out another form of camaraderie. Not based on being a biker but being part of a buoyant and optimistic future. The 3-Nation Charity Ride 2016 (3NCR) which saw more than a thousand bikers from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand ride and meet for a purpose in Cha-Am. Apart from the obvious camaraderie which bikers who relish the two-wheel experience on the open road enjoy and the renewal of old friendships, this event had a charity purpose. The 3NCR has been rolling from strength to strength since 1994 and is organised

annually on rotation by one of the four founding clubs – Team 27 of Singapore, Super Biker Club Malaysia, Penang Motor Sports Club, and Team Hanuman Thailand. Some millions of THB have been distributed to welfare homes of the host country due to the charity fund-raising efforts of the riders, clubs and organisers over the years.

Southeast Asia. The charity beneficiary of the event was the Bannongrong School in the Kao Pra District of Hua Hin. The non-charity highlight was the performance of Thailand’s iconic rock band Carabao, a band which has reached cult status and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world.

This year’s 3NCR was organised by Team 27 of Singapore in Cha-Am and marked the 23rd year of the biggest charity ride in

10 True Leadership at True Arena Hua Hin

Wasawat Tuntiprapha, or Khun Ong to his friends is the new, energetic and entrepreneurial General Manager of True Arena Hua Hin Khun Ong is a native of Nahkon Ratchasima. He has a background in the finance and banking industry, however involvement in sporting activities has always been in the background. Rugby as a school boy was the first passion, followed by university studies in the mountainous US States of Washington and Montana providing the opportunity to take to the ski slopes where he progressed to become a snow-boarding instructor.

The bad news was that both of these sports took a toll on KhunOng’s knees so that these days his sporting ventures need to be more passive. As an aside; a scholarship in the US lead to spending time in Alaska, literally assisting Eskimos to manage their tax-returns! These days Khun Ong is on a mission to present True Arena to the Hua Hin community as an accessible, friendly and progressive resource. His favourite part of the job is meeting guests; listening to their ideas and making

them feel at home. He wants visitors to make True Arena ‘their club’ where they can meet others and enjoy a social lifestyle apart from sporting or fitness activities. There are plans for a series of communityfriendly activities and events beginning with ‘Run For Hua Hin’ on Sunday, October 9th. This inaugural event seems destined to become a real draw card of the future as the Thailand version of the Boston Marathon. This iconic US event attracts 500,000 spectators each year and around 30,000 registered participants each year, that’s the benchmark that Run For Hua Hin is looking towards. Apart from a series of high profile tennis competitions and other sporting events, there are also plans for a jazz concert and the professional tennis tournament, WTA and ATP, as well as the annual tournament like World Tennis Thailand.True Arena is also contemplating an indoor tennis court. Youthful energy based on sound business strategies is what the leader of this vibrant community facility needs as True Arena moves forward. Khun Ong is up to the task and rapidly getting to know the 700 members as well as meeting anyone wanting to know what’s on offer. Hua Hin now has a real focus for recreational activities and a social scene lead by a young guy with a very progressive attitude. Something like business attire with sneakers seems to fit.

New Semester at Wai Wan College

The Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has chaired the opening ceremony of Wai Wan College, an academic institution for seniors, at the Hua Hin Municipality. The ceremony was attended by municipal executives, school administrators, business people, members of local clubs and a group of local seniors. A report was delivered by the deputy mayor of Hua Hin Ms. Phailin Kongphan. The Wai Wan College has been established to develop and improve the lives of local seniors. The number of older people in the city increases every year and as many are staying alone all day, this has resulted in cases of depression.

The municipality launched the college to improve the lifestyles of older people by providing them with knowledge about how to take care of their health and boost physical and mental skills. This will enable them to realise how valuable they are and feel proud. This objective corresponds to the motto of the project; ‘getting old with value and pride’. The Wai Wan College will have classes every Wednesday for 16 weeks at the Hua Hin Municipality, Hua Hin Temple and the centre for the seniors’ activities in Soi Hua Hin 106, Nong Kae. The classes have both theoretical and practical activities, organised by several volunteer groups.

HUA HIN TODAY, October 2016

12 King Chulalongkorn Day

23rd October of every year is a national holiday in Thailand as it marks “King Chulalongkorn Day” or known in Thai as “Wan Piyamaharaj Day”. It is the memorial day of the passing away of King Chulalongkorn, otherwise known as King Rama V. King Chulalongkorn led several major reforms in Thailand, for example in the areas of Thai educational system, military affairs, State Railway and Slave Liberation Act without bloodshed in Thailand. He was ordained as Buddhist monk for a short time during September 15 to October 11 2516/1873 and then was coronated again on October 16 2416/1873 to announce absolute kingship to the people of Siam and the world.

So WHO exactly was King Chulalongkorn?

King Chulalongkorn is the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. He is the son of King Mongkut and the grandfather of the current King of Thailand, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Moreover, he paid state visits to Singapore and Java twice and India once. It was not the pleasant tour but an observation-tour to observe the political systems and administration of the European Imperialists who came to govern the colonies in South Asia and South-east. Asia by this way he brought back new knowledge and technology to apply in Thai government. Royal tradition such as uniform, haircut and audience the king were changed to the western style.

HOW did King Chulalongkorn become one of Thailand’s most loved and revered King? King Chulalongkorn is considered one of the greatest kings of Thailand. His reign from 1868 to 1910 was characterized by extensive social and economic development, including the abolition of slavery and corvee (state labor service). He is also famed for his ardent Thai nationalism, and for his skill in fending off the threat of European colonialism, despite the fact that large tracts of Siam were ceded to the Europeans during the period. King Chulalongkorn managed to prevent Thailand from being colonized by extending friendship and travelling extensively to western countries like America, Great Britain, France and Russia. Because of this, Thailand remains as the only country in Southeast Asia to have never been colonized. Besides that, King Chulalongkorn was the

first Thai King to send the Royal Princes to be educated in Europe. Throughout Chulalongkorn’s reign, radical writers had their works published for the first time. Works that were previously banned were allowed to be read by the public once again.

and Christianity) should have the freedom to practise without fear of persecution. Communications in the country were improved greatly with the introduction of postal services, the telegraph and the construction of Thailand’s first railway (from Bangkok to Ayutthaya).

King Chulalongkorn was perhaps best known for his abolition of slavery. In 1900 the Employment Act stated that all workers should be paid. All the slaves in Thailand were freed so that they would not become unemployed.

Born on September 20, 1853 King Chulalongkorn ascended the throne in 1868 at the age of only 15. His Majesty then passed away on October 23rd 1910 at the age of 57. He had ruled what was then Siam, for 42 years.

The most important royal contribution was the announcement of Slave Abolition Act. Slave Abolition made him the Beloved Great King of all people of Siam.

How Do Thais celebrate Chulalongkorn Memorial Day in Thailand? Many Thais show their respects for the great monarch by placing wreaths at the Equestrian Statue, in the Royal Plaza, Dusit District, on this public holiday. Much of this part of Bangkok was originally built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn and bears the architectural mix of Thai and European styles characteristic of the era.

In the beginning of his reign, more than 1/3 of the Thai population were slaves. It was so because there was the endless continuity of offspring slaves. They all were slaves for the rest lives. Traditionally children of slaves also became slaves. The King also modernized government and streamlined the administration of the country by dividing it into provinces and districts. He replaced the traditional lunar calendar with the Western calendar. Siam was a Buddhist country but he made it clear that other religions (including Islam

13 Six Things You Should Never Eat With Durian

Durian – also known as the king of fruits – is a local favourite. It is prickly on the outside and soft on the inside; and it is a fruit that you either like or hate, with no middle ground. With the recent news about the increase in supply of durians and the fall of prices, we can be assured of a bountiful durian season this year. But durian lovers, before we rush ahead to gorge ourselves on this heavenly piece of fruit, take the time to read on the 6 things we are advised not to eat durian with: Ok, we have to admit that some – ok, most – of the items mentioned here are based more on old wives’ tales than scientific study but like the saying goes, better safe than not, right?

Coca Cola – a carbonated drink loaded with caffeine and said to cause cardiac failure when consumed together with durian.

Crabs – Crabs are said to be extremely ‘cooling’ while durians belongs to the ‘heating’ category; consuming both at the same time will cause your digestive system to be confused and may cause discomfort in your stomach.

Egg Plant – both durian and egg plant are considered to be ‘heating’ foods; if taken together, they will cause your body to heat up and fall ill.

Beef and Mutton – these meats are ‘heating’ foods, and when consumed with durian may add to the heat of your body and cause you to fall ill.

Alcohol – Ok, people have been saying that eating durian and drinking alcohol at the same time will kill you. While we are not able to confirm that fatality will occur, we do know that the high sulfur content of durians inhibits the enzyme that helps to break down alcohol in your body by up to 70%. Milk – Durian is also said to inhibit the breakdown of caffeine in the body. It has been said that drinking milk with durian can lead to increased blood pressure and in rare cases, fatal consequences.

Health Ministry Considers Legal Action Against Neglect In Mosquito Breeding Prevention The Ministry of Public Health is checking health-related laws and regulations to ascertain whether penalties can be taken against house-owners who, through negligence, allow mosquito breeding grounds to exist in their houses or house compounds. Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsattayathorn said that health officials in all provinces had been told to inform members of the public to do three things: to keep their house in order and tidy; to collect garbage and to get rid of breeding grounds for mosquitos. Mosquitos, he said, are carriers of three diseases namely dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. He suggested that every household must be responsible for taking care of their households to make sure that there are no mosquito breeding grounds. He said legal experts of the ministry were told to study whether any penalty could be taken against those who allow mosquito breeding grounds to exist in their households. “If mosquitos from your house bite me in my house and I am infected with Zika or dengue, can I sue him?” the health minister questioned. Fighting Dry Mouth With Sugar-free Candies

If you are constantly fighting dry mouth, try reaching for sugar-free candies or gum to encourage saliva production, a public health organisation recommends.

It is also crucial to ensure you stay hydrated. The organisation recommends water, unsweetened fruit or herbal teas and diluted juices. Dry mouth often leads to difficulties chewing, talking, swallowing and can sometimes even cause dental problems. There are many causes of dry mouth, one of the most common being medications. Many drugs, including antidepressants, sleep aids, painkillers and antibiotics, list dry mouth as a common side-effect. Under no circumstances should you stop taking medications without first consulting your doctor, says the German Green Cross organisation.

Reusable Water Bottles – Harboring Dangerous Germs Recycling your plastic water bottle may seem like a green thing to do, but the truth is it’s better to simply avoid plastic altogether, and for a number of reasons. Drinking from a reusable water bottle places you at risk for contracting an array of dangerous germs like E.coli and salmonella. Laboratory testing of 12 refillable water bottles used by athletes over the course of a week identified a buildup of bacteria dangerous to humans. On average, the plastic bottles contained more than 300,000 colony-forming units of bacteria, according to the UK’s Daily Mail. The testing found a wide array of bacteria linked to skin infections, pneumonia and blood poisoning.

The bottles were so dirty that researchers concluded that drinking from them was no more sanitary than licking your pet’s food bowl. The amount of bacteria found on the reusable water bottles is comparable to the germs you would find on a toilet seat, they added. It turns out that not all plastic bottles are the same in terms of filth, either. The straw-top, probably one of the least used water bottle types, contained fewer germs than the others with an estimated 25 CFU. The straw-top is believed to have the least amount of germs because water drips to the bottom of the straw instead of sticking

around at the top attracting bacteria that thrive on moisture.

Endocrine mimickers or hormone disruptors interfere with the body’s natural sex hormones, leading to all sorts of health problems including infertility, early puberty, cancer, thyroid problems and more. Even low dose exposure to these chemicals can significantly affect your health.

Stainless steel water bottles or even glass bottles are optimal for a number of reasons. Not only do they harbor fewer germs, but they don’t leach toxic chemicals into your drink.

1,150 Hua Hin Kids Are Safer Now

In possibly one of the most beneficial Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in recent times, the combined forces of local Resorts and a number of other community orgaisations and companies have presented 1,150 motorcycle helmets to Hua Hin children as part of the “Helmet Extravaganza”. Shocking figures show that less than seven per cent of Thai children wear helmets when riding on motorbikes with their parents. This means that every day, all across the country, more than 93 per cent of Thai children are risking their lives just by traveling to and from school. In order to address this alarming statistic, 14 of Hua Hin’s top hotels joined forces on 14th September, to present the “Helmet Extravaganza” - a CSR event aimed at saving the lives of young people in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Hotels taking part in the initiative included Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa, Hilton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, InterContinental Hua Hin, Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, Chiva-Som International, Putahracsa Hua Hin, SO Sofitel Hua Hin, G Hua Hin Resort & Mall, Banyan The Resort Hua Hin, and Amari Hua Hin.

Representatives from these hotels welcomed hundreds of local children from nearby for an engaging event aimed at delivering the message of motorcycle safety. A total of more than 1,000 motorbike helmets were donated by the hotels, Hua Hin Palm Orchid Homes, Hua Hin Business Network, the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and the Da Vinci International School to the students, who were also able to take part in fun activities such as helmet painting. “It is a worrying fact of life in Thailand – and across many Asian countries – that many children do not wear helmets when traveling on motorcycles with their parents,” Goetz Bauer, General Manager of the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa. “There are many reasons for this, but often it is simply that the children do not have helmets to wear.” “By donating more than 1,000 helmets to local students we could be potentially saving the lives of 1,115 local children. This is a truly incredible.”

16 Rejuvenated by the Spa Experience – ‘It’s A Breeze’ Apart from a friendly welcome from the reception staff at the Breeze Spa at the Amari, there was one important question they wanted me to answer. “How do you want to feel after the treatment?” I ticked the “rejuvenated” box; my post-therapy assessment?; mission accomplished!

First came a genuine and warm welcome from Khun Jeab; she’s more than just a receptionist. She listened carefully to my many rather naïve questions, asked about any special requirements, concerns or health issues. It’s not just to boost your confidence; duty of care is taken seriously including staff qualifications and training. To really make you feel relaxed and at ease, a cooling glass of mixed tropical fruit juices was served before I was introduced to my therapist Khun Cap Moo showed me the way to a private treatment room. What I was about to experience after the essential foot cleansing and ‘re-dressing’ down to just disposable underwear was a Hua Hin Tropicana Package; 2 hours which involves an intense exfoliate treatment and a complete and relaxing massage. For those who may be a little on the shy side, there’s a discrete towel shield held by the therapist to ensure a client’s modesty is maintained; after all the disposables don’t leave a lot to the imagination! My exfoliation experience began with aromatic oils being drizzled over me then I could feel (not see); a mixture of real pearl powder and grounded jasmine rice being sprinkled over me followed by a gentle rub, just faintly abrasive, to remove worn-out skin tissues and stimulate the microcirculation of cells. Pearls have been used for centuries for both beauty and health reasons. Rice is rich with vitamins and other nutrients, as a perfect treatment for your skin. The next stage was a shower to remove the exfoliates. Demonstrating attention to detail and convenience I was surprised to find a running warm water shower was waiting. Khun Cap Moo had left me alone for just a moment or two before I was asked to shower and that was why. Struggling with temperature or pressure controls wasn’t necessary. At a number of stages of my luxurious massage Khun Cap

Moo extended her hands below my downturned my face so that a variety of subtle aromas from massage oils could be enjoyed from beneath the open headrest. At one point warmed sea shells were held against my ears as a pleasant reminder of childhood days at the beach when this was a way to hear the sounds of the sea; it still works. I also remembered that pet dogs really enjoy having their ear lobes massaged; I discovered that also works for me! Time goes by quickly when you are in that state of peaceful bliss. It’s also hard to remember much when you drift away into your own thoughts without a care in the world. I later explained to the Spa Manager Khun Nick that my best problem solving times are either during a long distance solo drive or when drifting in and out of sleep in the very early hours of the morning. However the third time is during a soothing and blissful massage. It didn’t really enter my mindset, but I could have solved any world crisis during my time at the Breeze Spa. The Spa industry in Thailand and especially in Hua Hin is really a feature of the tourist experience that locals can also enjoy. The best operators are very thoughtful, designing services and facilities to be luxurious, immaculate, inviting and restful.

The Breeze Spa at the Amari is an example of this thoughtfulness. As an example, recent redecoration deliberately avoided a traditional Thai style on the advice of Thai clients who suggested that both religious and royal sensibilities may not be appropriate when enjoying personal indulgences. Instead walls of small white stones, shimmering mosaics, subtle natural and subdued lighting and wooden parquetry flooring set the scene. There’s even your own private ‘after treatment area’ where a drinking a jasmine tea completes your experience. A definition of rejuvenation may be “making someone feel or look young, healthy, or energetic again, to give new strength or energy.” That was my initial request and that was my feeling upon returning to the ‘real world’. My thanks and appreciation to the Breeze Spa staff for the rejuvenation experience, it’s one everyone should relish from time to time. How Important is the Urine Test? It is ideal to have both good mental health and good physical health. Therefore, it is necessary to have an annual health checkup, at least once a year, to assess your current health status.

As part of this check-up, a urine test is useful in many ways. It assesses your risk for many diseases, such as kidney disease, diabetes, cystitis and vesical calculu. Urine is a waste substance from our blood filtered by the kidney and eliminated out of our body. Urine is composed of 95% water, 2.5% urea, and 2.5% of other substances. Normally, we would urinate around 3-5 times during the day; by volume is around 1-2 litres per day.

urine test as it would give a more accurate diagnosis. Since there are cases where you could not find any abnormality with the physical and chemical examinations, but discover such abnormality with the microscopic examination. The following are what can be found in urine sediment.

A urine test in a laboratory can be divided into 3 types as follow: 1. Physical examination – a check on the volume, colour, smell, turbidity, and the specific gravity of urine. Normal urine would have amber colour. A change may indicate dysfunction of the kidney or metabolism. New urine would usually be in clear colour, but may be more turbid if left for a while. Turbidity of urine caused by abnormality may come from having too many white blood cells, bacteria, or fat in the urine. The specific gravity will indicate the ability to control the concentration of body fluids of the kidneys. The average stage is 1.005 to 1.030. 2. Chemical examination – will help identify abnormal condition of our body at primary stage as follow: To check the acidity (pH) that indicates the capacity of renal function, where the average stage is 5-8. To check for any chemicals in the urine. In general, it should not be detected or tested negative. However, if our body is in bad conditions or has any dysfunctional, such as patients with chronic kidney disease, older people where protein is usually found in their urine, or patients with diabetes where having poor glucose control would led to excess sugar in their urine. 3. Microscopic examination – is the most important part of

The accuracy of the test also depends on the collection of the fluids. The correct way to collect the urine for the laboratory is to collect in the middle period of urination, where you have already urinated a little to clean the urethra. You should collect around 10-15 millilitres of the urine in a clean container and let out the rest. Women should avoid getting a urine test during menstruation or inform the staff before the test to avoid any misinterpretation on the test result. As you can see, just an easy urine test will allow you to know a lot more about your body. So are you ready for your annual health checkup? Contributed by Health Lab Hua Hin

17 Wat Thiti Sutto – A Sanctuary Weekend Away

It’s a Hua Hin temple that’s not on the tourist map, but well known to local Thai people, especially when the time has come for quiet contemplation, perhaps for a weekend away from the pressures of urban life. We were invited to join a local husband and wife, who with their six year old daughter (our temple guide Nong Nun), were taking time-out from their busy working life to retreat for two nights to Wat Thiti Sutto. They were dressed in the traditional white clothing of novice monks, with no food after noon, certainly no alcohol or TV and sleeping on a floor mat spread over tiles. There’s early morning Buddhist learning and study under the tutelage of saffron robed monks, then most of the day is spent alone before more Buddhist learning at 4 PM. Fans and phones are allowed but quiet please! Women have their own area, away from couples, men and families. Wat Thitti Sutto also provides expansive grounds for walking amongst nature and Buddhist symbols aplenty for inspiration. Thai people show no scepticism or surprise at this practice, it’s a normal part of life. When there is a need to refresh or revitalise, the need for a temple retreat, whether that is for a few days, a few months or longer, is respected. There are cultural equivalents worldwide with solitude and contemplation being the common link. Being alone in the desert is just one version. However this form of retreat has been sadly lost to the mainstream of modern western thinking; we’re too busy being stressed! Perhaps surprising is the plethora of statues featuring fierce animals including serpents, tigers and mythical creatures, but that doesn’t seem to detract from the peaceful atmosphere. The temple is set high amongst the hills just to the west of Hua Hin with some glimpses towards Hua Hin town and a fine northern outlook with cooling breezes. We didn’t see any sign of foreigners at the temple. However we are assured anyone behaving in a way that

shows respect to Buddhist ways and those in retreat is welcome. It may even be possible for foreigners to undertake their own time-out at the temple, but that needs to be arranged in advance; you’ll also need Thai language skills or assistance. Where: Take Soi 70 away from the centre of Hua Hin. Before the Artists’ Village near the top of the hill turn right. English language signs point towards the Hua Hin Dog Refuge; the temple sits high above the road after about 2 KM.

20 Road Trip in the New Ford Everest

My partner in crime and I weren’t 15 kilometres into a road trip to Kui Buri National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, when we were forced to put the Ford Everest we were test driving into action. As the designated driver, I was behind the wheel when a huge construction truck to my left decided to swerve into our lane without warning. Luckily, the antilock brakes kicked in and I was able to avoid a collision. With a starting price of 1,549,000 THB, the Titanium Plus diesel (2.2L 3.2L) sport utility vehicle (SUV) with advanceDriving Assist Technology, Panoramic Roof that can seat up to seven, has great acceleration as well as a state of the art braking system. There is a Power folding rear seat, trunk lid and wheels 20 inch alloy wheels. Our first stop on this journey was at a roadside stand selling dragon fruit - three kilos for 100 THB. We pulled off the smoothly paved road onto a dirt side road. Designed to tackle tough terrain and unexpected obstacles, the transition was smooth and comfortable. Back on the road, we ventured further south. The SUV offers a smooth, easy ride. And, unlike rigid suspension systems, the Everest’s “watt’s linkage suspension” delivers improved stability and handling with maximum comfort. As we reached the turnoff to Kui Buri National Park, we realised we had less than a quarter tank of diesel, so we went to the nearest gas station to fill up. It took five of us to figure out how to open the fuel cap (you just have to unlock the doors), but we had a good chuckle. Located in the Tenasserim Hills, the national park is known to be the best elephant and gaur (wild ox) sighting place in Thailand. Established in 1999, the forest consists of dry and moist evergreen forests, with various species of wildlife and many different bird species.

At the Yang Chum reservoir, we decided to take the Everest off-road and then continued to the Huai Luek Wildlife Watching Area. It was here at a ranger station where we had to stop driving our car and use an open-air safari vehicle to enter the wildlife area. Safari tours are 850 THB per group. Back in the Everest, we headed back to Hua Hin. The seven airbags in the Everest provide a network of protection with front seat driver and passenger airbags and seat-mounted side airbags. Side-curtain airbags protect everyone in the front and back. Thankfully we didn’t have to test these out. While I was busy focusing on the drive, my companion had

a great time playing with the SYNC™ 2 voice activation system. He was able to make calls just by saying a name, have it read out incoming texts, and play music from the phone. There is also an 8-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, SD card slot and RCA port, making it easy to view and use all different types devices. Test driving the new Ford Everest was a blast. For me it is the perfect marriage between a city car, and an off-road beast. To see the Everest in person, visit Ford JorCharoan Prachubkirikhan (Hua Hin) at 6/143 Petchkasem Rd, Hua Hin (near Boonthavom) or call 032-547367-8.

22 A Day at V Villa

Arriving at the porte cochere, one is struck by the understated elegance that defines V Villas Hua Hin, MGallery by Sofitel. Three huge cloth chandeliers were billowing overhead in the open-air lobby upon my arrival. I was greeted with a cold towel and a traditional Thai phuang malai (garland), handmade with fragrant jasmine flowers. I was quickly met by my personal butler, Khun Bee, who would be at my beck and call during my entire stay. Khun Bee escorted me to my private and luxurious 1-bedroom pool villa, explaining the general layout of the resort as we walked. When we arrived, she opened the main door onto an expansive covered patio that led to my private pool We entered the villa and I was struck by the high ceilings and the attention to detail at every turn. From the entrance foyer we worked our way to the well-appointed bathroom replete with a jacuzzi tub (and rubber ducks!), into the master bedroom, and finally back to a living room. At this point my butler pulled out a cell phone and handed it to me - this was a direct line to her phone and I could contact her whenever I needed anything. Then she gave me an iPad, in which everything I needed to know about the resort and more was loaded - from “A” for Activities to “V” for Villazzo restaurant. But first things first - I had to take a dip in my private swimming pool! I changed into my bathing suit (actually, I skinny dipped but this is a family paper) and took the plunge. After swimming a few laps and just relaxing in the jet bubbles at one end of the pool, I decided to explore the beautiful property. Among the 23 villas are a selection of one, two and threebedroom suites - and the crown jewel - an expansive and luxuriously decadent Presidential Beachfront Villa. The interiors are the work of the famed J+H Boiffils architectural and interior design firm. Welcoming bedrooms are decorated with unique accessories and tasteful furnishings, while the spacious en suite bathrooms include a rain shower, a twin Jacuzzi, and amenities by Hermès. and each villa includes a 9×3.75 metre swimming pool. From the lobby, there is a paved path straight to the ocean. Flanking this path are the private villas, which are surrounded by shrubbery at least 3 metres high. It was impossible to see into anyone’s villa due to the design and the foliage. Definitely gives a feeling of exclusivity and luxury.

I made my way down toward the ocean, taking a quick peek at V Spa. There are a few well-appointed treatment rooms, and all services can be booked via your butler. A great feature here is treatments are offered in-villa as well, providing personalised luxury and comfort of a full-service spa in the privacy of your private villa. Before arriving at the beach, there is pool open to all guests. That is correct - if your private pool isn’t enough, you can join the other guests at a larger pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Dotted around the pool deck are lounge chairs. Also poolside is the Villazzo Restaurant. Acclaimed for its exceptional cuisine and service, the eatery serves its cuisine al fresco or in air-conditioned comfort. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is open from 7am to 11pm. My butler had mentioned afternoon tea in my suite at 3pm, so I made my way back and was delighted to find a tiered serving tray full of sweet and savoury items. There are so many personal touches (V Pillow menu, complete Wi-Fi coverage, a dedicated iPad) at V Villas Hua Hin that even the most discerning traveler will be impressed. 24 Fun, Weird and Offbeat October Days

The month of October is full of fun, bizarre and offbeat holidays that you can celebrate, almost one for every day. We’ve selected just a few that you may wish to celebrate this month. October 17th National Mulligans Day

4th October National Vodka Day

Your Country’s National Day

If you are not Thai then you will probably want to acknowledge your home country’s National Day in one way or another. Try to find a restaurant featuring the cuisine and traditional activities familiar to you. Here are some prominent National Days for October.

1st October China

It is by the distillation of fermented substances such as grains, potatoes or sometimes fruits or sugar that vodka is made. Traditionally prepared vodkas had an alcoholic content of percent by volume. In the United States, products sold as vodka must have an alcoholic content of 30 percent or more. “On the rocks” (over ice) is a popular way vodka is ordered. Cocktails with vodka as a vital ingredient include Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, Sex on the Beach, Moscow, Mule, White Russian and Black Russian.

6th October National Noodle Day

In golf, a mulligan happens when a player gets a second chance to play a second shot without penalty. The Mulligan gives golfers a second chance after a terrible shot that may have ruined a good round. According to the United States Golf Association (USGA), one story is that the term derived from the name of a Canadian golfer, David Mulligan, one-time manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, who played golf in the 1920’s. According to the USGA, the term first achieved widespread use in the 1940’s. However don’t try to claim a Mulligan during a serious game of golf; it’s absolutely against the Rules of Golf; even on this National Day.

October 28th National Chocolate Day

The National Day of the People’s Republic of China celebrates the nation’s s founding on October 1st, 1949, with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square. But the PRC was not founded on that day, but on September 21st, 1949. The Central People’s Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China on December 2nd, 1949, and declared that October 1st is the National Day. The National Day marks the start of one of the Golden Weeks in the PRC celebrated throughout mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau with a variety of government-organised festivities, including fireworks and concerts. Public places, such as Tiananmen Square in Beijing, are decorated in a festive theme. Portraits of revered leaders, such as Mao Zedong, are publicly displayed.[6]

3rd October Germany Noodles come in many varieties and National Noodle Day celebrates them all. The word noodle derives from the German word “nudel”. Noodles are made by some type of unleavened dough being rolled out and cut into a variety of shapes. Long thin strips are likely the most popular, however some of the other shapes such as; tubes, strings, shells, flat, wide and etc., have their fans also. Boiling, pan-frying or deep-frying them are the common ways of preparing the noodles. They then can be eaten alone, with butter or with a sauce or used in soups, casseroles, salads or lasagna. It is a question as to where the noodle was first invented but it is known that it has been a staple in many parts of the world, including Thailand for over 1800 years.

While there are many specific chocolate related holidays throughout the year, National Chocolate Day celebrates all things chocolate. Chocolate is one of the world’s favorite flavours, chocolate is well deserving of it’s own day of honor and celebration. One way is to go out to your favorite restaurant and indulge in a delicious chocolate dessert.

October 31st National Knock-Knock Joke Day

October 15th National Grouch Day

The Day of German Unity (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the national day of Germany which commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, when the goal of a united Germany was fulfilled again. Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but the unity of Germany. The Day of German Unity has been the German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed. The Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich, which traditionally runs until the first Sunday in October, now runs until 3rd October.

12th October Spain

If you are a grouch today is your special day. According to Sesame Street Magazine, National Grouch Day was created for all grouches to celebrate their way of life. A grouch is described as a person who complains frequently or constantly or a person who is habitually irritable or complaining. It seems that a grouch may be happy (although they would never admit it) only when others are unhappy and grouchy. It is then that they feel most comfortable by having others share in their world with them.

The Fiesta Nacional de España is the national day of Spain. It is held annually and the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival in the Americas, a day also celebrated in other countries. This holiday is for jokesters of all ages to share their knockknock jokes throughout the day. In 1934 the standard knockknock joke format was used in a newspaper humour column: Knock Knock, Who’s There?, Rufus, Rufus Who?, Rufus the most important part of your house. Children often learn to tell knock-knock jokes as one of their first types of jokes, at a very young age. You can easily make up your own knock-knock jokes with just a little imagination.

In October 7th, 1987, the name was changed to Fiesta Nacional. Spain’s “national day” had moved around several times during the 20th century; establishing it on the day of the international Columbus celebration was part of a compromise between conservatives, who wanted to emphasize the status of the monarchy and Spain’s history, and Republicans, who wanted to commemorate Spain’s burgeoning democracy with an official holiday.

26 Trying Your Hand (Plus Elbows, Feet and Knees) at Muay Thai Boxing

It is generally agreed that Muay Thai began as a close quarters battlefield combat to defend the land and people from early invasion threats. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and often referred to as the sport of kings.

This physical and mental discipline is known as “the art of eight limbs” because it combines the use of fists, elbows, knees, shins and requires physical fitness that makes the trained full contact fighter very efficient. The 1930’s Muay Thai was codified and today’s rules and regulations were introduced. Rope bindings of the arms and hands were abandoned and gloves took their place. This innovation was also in response to the growing success of Thai Boxers in international boxing. Hua Hin’s Pone Kingpetch became Thailand’s first world boxing champion title (Queensberry Rules not Muay Thai) by defeating Pascual Pérez of Argentina in 1960 for the world flyweight championship. His statue near the Hua Hin Railway Station celebrates this achievement.

Our trip to the Grand Muay Thai Boxing Stadium in Hua Hin was to witness Cha-Am’s ‘Rick the Brick’) as his supporters dubbed him) in Muay Thai action. Rick is a tall, strong and healthy looking Dutchman. A real ‘gentle giant’, who was outwardly calm and relaxed, although admitting just before the event that he was feeling a somewhat nervous. He had no idea of the strengths or weaknesses of his opponent; his experience, height or weight. All he had seen or knew was from a poster showing ‘Roshan’ alongside a Sri Lankan flag; apparently his opponent was arriving in Thailand just a few days before the bout.

Muay Thai spread widely internationally in the twentieth century with extensive TV coverage. It has its enthusiasts and practitioners in the Americas, Australia, Japan, Europe, as well as in many other countries around the world. So You Want To Be A Muay Thai Boxer? The experience of being a Muay Thai boxer is on the ‘bucket list’ for some visitors to Thailand, including ladies. That may be somewhat surprising; it’s not generally considered to be a brutal sport, with tradition and sportsmanship taking pride of place, but it’s still hand-tohand combat. The chances are that even the winner will show the ‘scars of war’. However most are just thinking about losing weight, as self-defense or to improve stamina. Perhaps some sparring with other trainees without ever becoming too competitive. It’s also a way to have a very active holiday with a Thai difference. If you are thinking about trying your luck as a real boxer, you’ll need to show that you’re ready and able at a recognised gym which may negotiate a contest. ‘Rick the Brick’ In Action Becoming a Muay Thai boxer has been on the bucket list of Rick De Bies for some time; just ‘something he wanted to do’. After months of preparation at the Chock Dee Cha-Am Gym, Rick was ready to rumble in his first (and probably last) Muay Thai match.

HUA HIN TODAY, October 2016

At the conclusion Rick was the winner after his opponent, perhaps a little underprepared, ‘threw in the towel’ after three rounds. Sporting some minor facial swelling, Rick described himself as ………….……. “satisfied”. Winning was not the aim, just achieving his ambition without disgrace. Mission more then accomplished! . Our thanks to Rick and Chok Dee gym operators Rosalie and Kru Phot for allowing Hua Hin Today to follow Rick’s progress to victory. You’ll find more information on their facebook page: www.facebook.com/chokdeechaam Muay Thai Boxing Matches Where: Grand Muay Thai Boxing Stadium & Gym, next to the Hua Hin Grand Market, off Petchakasem Road near the San Paulo Hospital. When: Every Friday and Wednesday night from 9.00 PM. OR Where: Thai Boxing Garden and Gym; 20/23 Poonsuk Road Hua Hin When: Every Tuesday & Saturday starting at 9 PM.

30 Banyan The Resort Hua Hin Supporting Rescue Paws Doing their part for animal aid, Banyan The Resort Hua Hin recently nominated Rescue Paws as benefactor of their latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) initiative. Rescue Paws is a non-profit animal relief centre based in Khao Tao, lending great efforts in addressing the issue of an ever-growing number of strays in the Pranburi, Hua Hin and Cha-Am areas, and bettering the lives of the many abandoned, injured and abused animals roaming our streets. Banyan The Resort Hua Hin raised funds for Rescue Paws by hosting several ‘Meating & Fishing’ dinners, as well as 3 charity fairs during July to September. In September, a group of 15 Banyan staff members, lead by Public Relations Manager, Paranee Centiyanonth (Bee), visited Rescue Paws at their facilities in Khao Tao, and was able to take a few of the dogs for a walk to the beach, followed by a soapy shower. Having all learnt more about their daily operations, current challenges and future goals, as well as the social impact that an uncontrolled stray animal population has on local communities, the party joined in a ceremony to present Rescue Paws with a 10,000 THB cash donation and a generous selection of medical supplies & products, collars, leashes, dog food, medication and linen.

Hanli Engelbrecht, Operations Manager at Rescue Paws, noted that their continued success is possible only with the participation and support of local communities and establishments.

HUA HIN TODAY, October 2016

Extending sincere thanks for the generous donations, she applauded Banyan The Resort for their efforts and hopes that others may follow their shining example. Khun Paranee ended the ceremony with a pledge of Banyan’s on-going support to Rescue Paws in the future.

Be Amongst the First to Take a Walk in The Park The newest housing development to spring up in region is The Park Exclusive Residence Hua Hin The project is located off Soi 112 on the road toward Banyan Golf Club. “The area is very green,” said Robert Rystrom, one of the developers of the project. “It has a real park-like feeling, that is why we are calling it The Park.” Launched in September of this year, the 86-villa project has already sold six, and an additional three have been reserved. There are 5 villa types to choose from, Oasis 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the Mirage - all include private pools and all can be customised. Prices start at 4.5 million THB for Oasis 1, with the most expensive Mirage villa starting at 9.6 million THB. “We’re trying to use some new ways of development,” said Robert. This includes using lightweight steel construction, magnesium oxide boards, and many eco-friendly practices including LED lighting, solar energy for hot water, rain water collection, and inverter air conditioners. Framing of the structures will be done with SMARTFRAME™ - the latest innovation of cold formed, light gauge, steel framing technology from BlueScope Lysaght, the world leaders in pre-engineered steel structures. The framing is more cost competitive compared to timber frames and conventional reinforced concrete structures, has a high strength to weight ratio resulting in lighter structures, is easy to prefabricate and mass produce, and is termite proof.

The builders will also use synthetic resin roofing tiles that have a 50-year lifespan. The tiles are self-cleaning and reduce bad climate impact outside of the roof. The colour will not fade for at least 10 years, and they are highly decay resistant. The walls will be constructed utilising Magnesium Oxide Boards, which are virtually impervious to water, fire, insects, and chemicals, and actively prevent the growth of mould and mildew, all while being environmentally friendly and non-toxic. LED lights will be used for all the homes and LED solar lights

will be used for the garden and common areas. Among the many benefits of LED lighting is they last 40 times longer than traditional lightbulbs, there are no toxic gasses to complicate disposal, and they do not generate heat. The villas will also utilise solar power to heat their water. Using solar power is an energy-efficient way to heat water and saves money while helping the environment. Privacy is also important to the builders of The Park Hua Hin, and there will be two-metre high walls between the homes. For more information, visit their website: www.theparkhuahin.com.

The Ideal Bali Hut Design

Are you tired of the usual, everyday look of your place? Bali huts are structures that have become popular in many other parts of the world though the designs may still best suits a tropical climate and Thailand is no exception. They placed in many different home situations and there are many good Bali hut designs, but you can also design the Bali hut on your own. When you want to have a Bali hut in your place, there are a few things you need to consider as part of the preliminaries. First,

you need to consider the use of your Bali hut. Bali huts can be used in many, many ways. Bali huts can be used as a good lunch or dinner place for your family and friends. A large table, a few chairs, and a mini bar can be placed in it. This gives you the chance to provide your family and guests a different ambiance than the usual dining room setting. If you want to impress your friends, give them a dinner that they can’t forget- not only the food, but the venue as well. The furniture defines the function of your Bali hut. The function of your Bali hut influences

the size. If you do not want your hut to be an exclusive place for you or your family, that from time to time friends and guests will come and be accommodated in your hut, you should really consider building a bigger Bali hut. You should include this as a crucial part of your Bali hut designs and plans –the size. Bali huts have a simple layout. The four wood posts are made of wood, usually cedar, pine, or bamboo, and the roof is made of dried leaves and other vegetation, stitched together to form a whole, sturdy roof.

www.facebook.com/huahintodaynews HUA HIN TODAY, October 2016

Since the layout is simple, it is your task as Bali hut owner to improve more its appearance and allure. And how are you going to do that? You need to think of the necessary furniture that you need to add. You can also include railings and decks if you want to. You can put lamps or lanterns and other decorations, so that you can still appreciate your Bali hut at night. You just have to think of your own possible Bali hut designs. Always maintain your Bali hut, so it can last for a very long time.

419 Breaking Or Changing the Rules of Golf

The Rules of Golf have taken a beating this year, further exposing to the masses that they’re more complicated than advanced calculus. At a time when the game is in need of a growth spurt, many have suggested it’s time for the Rules to be simplified. Golf Digest has joined in the debate and listed some suggested some changes. Here’s our top ten suggestions made in the spirit of fairness and to speed up play. However you can’t play this way now or make these Local Rules without breaking the Rules of Golf and we’re not expecting the R&A or USGA to take any notice soon! 1. If a ball moves, even if you accidentally caused it to move on the green or when moving debris or you stood on it while searching, forget about it. How does it possibly help you? 2. You are allowed to tap down a spike mark on the green. Why not, it’s OK to repair a plugt mark so what’s the difference? 3. Remove rocks from the bunker that interfere with your stroke. Can you imagine explaining to your doctor how you managed to cause that serious eye injury because the Rules of Golf didn’t allow you to remove that one tiny stone? 4. One-Mark Procedure. You only get to mark your ball once on every green. Keep putting and hole out. The guys waiting on the fairway as you marking and placing three times on every green will be happy.

‘Rhodes Rules School’ Questions & Answers

For golfers of all abilities who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Golf; provided by Rules guru and author Barry Rhodes. Each month 5 new Questions & Answers will be shown; here are numbers 11 -15.

5. Agreement about ground conditions. “Can I take it out of this divot/footprint?” “or “That should be ground under repair”, just let common sense prevail. The sticklers call this “lift, clean and cheat,” but if even the pros call it winter rules, why shouldn’t you?

Question 11

6. Accidental strokes don’t count. This usually happens on greens, put the ball back and be more careful.

Time spent in playing a wrong ball is not counted in the five minute period permitted for searching for a ball. True or False?

7. There is no logic in out of bounds incurring a greater penalty than landing in the lake (hazard). Take a penalty; drop the ball where it left the course and play on. It speeds up play, eliminating provisional shots or the walk of shame back to the tee box when a player discovers his ball is out of bounds. 8. Hitting a ball off a root can cause permanent damage to a golf club and the person swinging it. It’s reasonable and safe to move the ball. 9. Drop On Other Side Of A Forced Carry. It’s fun to challenge yourself, but losing one ball is enough. If you find a hazard off the tee, drop on the other side, your wallet won’t complain. 10. The maximum during a stroke round is 5 over par on any hole. Once you’ve hit that number, just pick up and say “put me down for the max.” No one wants to see you hit 14 shots on one hole and even worse, watch you go through the process of counting them all.

TRUE or FALSE?

Answer: True. Definition of Lost Ball. Question 12

Answer: True: Rule 11-4a.

A player who is naturally right-handed may carry a left-handed club to use for shots where she might otherwise have to turn a clubhead over, for example, where her ball is lying against a tree. True or False? Answer: True. Rule 4-4.

Note: However, the opponent may also elect to let the stroke stand.

Note: There is nothing in the Rules to prevent a player carrying both left and right-handed clubs, providing they do not start their stipulated round with more than 14 clubs. Question 13 A ball is in a bunker when any part of it touches the bunker. True or False? Answer: True. Definition of Bunker. Question 14 In match play, if a player plays from outside the teeing ground when starting play of a hole her opponent may require the stroke to be cancelled and replayed from within the teeing ground. True or False?

Question 15 A player’s provisional ball may not be played if their original ball is neither lost nor out of bounds. True or False? Answer: True. Rule 27-2c. Note: The player must continue play with the original ball. The above content has been provided to Hua Hin Today by Barry Rhodes ©2016 and may not be copied without permission. The answers to the questions have been referenced to the Rules of Golf 2016 ©2015 and the Decisions on the Rules of Golf 20162017 ©2015, as approved by R&A Rules Limited and The United States Golf Association. Ball below your feet, no problem Golf tip October

Typical situation here: You’ve hit your tee shot to the right, onto a sidehill lie with the ball below your feet. Most golfers approach this shot like any other -- then lose their balance and miss the green right. First off, understand that gravity wants to pull you down the hill. As a result, your swing can get too vertical and prevent the clubface from rotating back to square at impact(Pic 1). To adjust, get into a stable position at address and maintain it as you swing. Start by putting more weight on your heels(Pic2) . Really squat down in your knees, lowering your rear end. You want to sit into the slope. This will result in your swing being more on plane (Pic 3). Spread your feet a little wider, too, but use your normal ball position. The shot will tend to curve to the right, so aim left. Take a Chance on Mamma Mia

When I think of Mamma Mia, two things come to mind: the musical based on the songs of ABBA; and, the delicious Italian restaurant in the heart of Hua Hin. Mamma Mia was founded in 1996 by Claudio Ceriani. Located on Naresdamri Road a short stroll from the Hilton, the restaurant has amassed quite a following over the past 20 years with both locals and visitors alike. Be sure to check out the upstairs terrace with a grand view to the Gulf of Thailand. This is a perfect location for a sundowner, before enjoying an Italian feast. The name of the game at Mamma Mia’s is their authentic and traditional home-style Italian cuisine. Many of the core ingredients are imported from Italy.

When it comes to their wood-fired pizzas, all I can think of is gimme, gimme, gimme! The Margherita is the standard pizza I order at an Italian restaurant as it really showcases the pizza chef’s talents - and it is always top notch at Mamma Mia. Fun fact: the Margherita was created to honour Italy’s Queen Margherita, and is made with red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese and green basil - all the colours of the Italian flag. At Mamma Mia, the breads and pastas are all made fresh daily, with locally sourced as well as imported ingredients.

The restaurant prides itself not only on the pizza and pastas, but also on an abundance of fresh seafood and fine cuts of meat. On a recent visit we were enticed by a grain-fed tomahawk steak that weighed in around a kilo! So on a Friday night when the lights are low, and you’re looking out for a place to go, I suggest Mamma Mia. In fact, any night of the week is a great time to visit, because when all is said and done, a meal at Mamma Mia is a meal to savour. Location: 8/4 Naresdamri Rd. 2 46 Oceanside Dining at its Best at Sai Thong

Arriving at the beautiful Anantara Hua Hin Resort at dusk, my dining companion and I were met by Sales & Event Manager extraordinaire Khun Pooky, who promptly led us to the golden sands of the oceanside restaurant Sai Thong.

Surrounded by majestic palms in this open-air eatery, we were seduced by the tranquil gently crashing waves of the Gulf of Thailand throughout our meal. The restaurant specialises in BBQ seafood and imported steaks. Our meal began with Deep-fried Calamari Rings (370 THB) served with a delicious aioli and fresh lemon wedges. The breading was thick but surprisingly light, and the calamari inside was perfectly tender. Next came the Spanish-inspired Potato Bravas (190 THB). This dish was served in a small cast iron pot and was filled to the brim with potatoes, spicy chorizo sausage and onion, all topped with an egg before being baked in the oven. Our entrees were two - the Flamed Seafood Wok (2,290 THB) and the Surf ’N’ Turf Platter (1,790 THB). Thankfully Khun Pooky stayed with us during the meal as there was a lot of food to try! The wok was brought table-side and set ablaze with

flames shooting overhead. Inside were large tiger prawns, rock lobsters, a nice salmon filet, and a whole sea bass. The menu says this item is recommended for sharing, and I concur. The second dish was creatively served on a what resembled a scale. The meats on one plate balanced with the seafood on the other. The seafood side included rock lobster, a salmon filet, and a whole sea bass. The meat side included a pork steak, German sausage, and bacon-wrapped chicken breast. We did our best to get through both dishes and still ended up with a nice take away package. During the meal, the house band came by to sing a few acoustic songs, and in fact went table to table taking special requests. There is a special Saturday night BBQ seafood buffet at Sai Thong for just 1,490 THB per person.

448 J –Jetrin’s Into the Sheraton Hua Hin

J-Jetrin is a Thai show business legend. Jetrin Wattanasin or “J Jetrin” is a musician and actor who has been performing his brand of hip hop for the last 25 years; he will turn 46 years old this month. J-etrin released his debut solo album Jor-Ae-Bor in 1991; his popularity is not restricted to Thailand, with concerts worldwide, including tours in the US, concerts in Amsterdam, Hamburg, London and Sydney to name just a few.

The Chandelier ballroom at the Sheraton on 10th September proved to be a very appealing venue for the nearly 1,000 concert-goers, typically in the 20-30 year old age group who had grown up with his music and wre very eager to see the legend in action; they weren’t disappointed.

The music has been described as ‘a poppy brand of hip-hop’. As well as the jeans not falling below the waist-line and the cap being worn with the peak at the front, J-Jetrin’s performance had commercial appeal rather than without a less savoury ‘gangsta’ image being present either on the stage or in the audience. “The thing about hip-hop today is it’s smart, it’s insightful. The way they can communicate a complex message in a very short space is remarkable”. The Sheraton plans to hold more concerts from pop, rock to hip hop during April, June & September 2017; stayed tuned!

Rating : PG-13 (for crude and sexual humor, some language and violence) Genre: Comedy Directed By: Jared Hess In Theaters: Oct 10, 2016 limited Runtime: 90 minutes Studio: Relativity Media

Cast: Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis Kate McKinnon Summary: Parents need to know that Masterminds is an action comedy based on the true story of one of America’s largest bank thefts. Wanting to find adventure, David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers

the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime. Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurd heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash. The only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and is set up to take the fall. With the bandits blowing the millions on lavish and ridiculous luxuries, they leave behind a glaring trail of evidence. Now on the lam and in over his head, David must dodge the authorities, evade a hitman, Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis), and try to turn the tables on the ones he trusted most. Written by Relativity

12 56 Traditional Thai Dancing

(So Much More than Grace, Beauty and Colour)

Although the traditional Thai performing arts may have suffered inroads from Western entertainment and generally changing tastes, Thai dance drama is certainly alive and well. Thai traditional dance displays the elegance of an art form refined over centuries and supported by regal patronage. In the beginning dancing was exclusively court entertainments and it was not until much later that a popular style of dance theatre, likay, evolved as a diversion for the common folk who had no access to royal performances. These days tourists can attend very polished Thai dance performances at resort or official events which frequently feature this form of theatre and glimpses of traditional culture from years gone by.

monkeys, humans and celestial beings. The dance may require agility and muscular exertion. Most Khon performances feature episodes from the Ramakien, the Thai version of Ramayana, the Indian epic. Lakhon is less formal than Khon and the dancers do not wear masks. Lakhon dance movements (especially the upper torso and hands) are graceful, sensual, and fluid portraying different emotions. Dancers are usually female and perform as a group rather than representing individual characters. Lakhon plots feature a wider range of stories drawn from the Ramakien, the Jatakas (stories of previous lives of Siddharta Gautama Buddha) and folk stories. Fawn Thai is a form of “folk-dance accompanied by folk music., There are five classic styles: Fawn Leb (Fingernails Dance from Chiang Mai) Fawn Ngiew (Scarf Dance from Chiang Rai) Fawn Marn Gumm Ber (Butterfly Dance) Fawn Marn Mong Kol (Happy Dance) Fawn Tian (Candle Dance)

Traditional Thai dances can be divided into four main categories: Khon is the most stylised form of Thai dance. It is performed by Hanuman Hak Kor Chang Arawan dancers who mime the action while the story is being told/sung by a chorus in the background. Dancers wear elaborate costumes and masks to portray different characters. Khon characters include demons,

The Manohra Dance is unique to the south. It is a dance drama which presents the love story of Prince Suthon and Kinnari Manohra, a half-bird half-woman being. While the prince was away at war, unscrupulous court advisors misled the king into believing that the sacrifice by fire of Manohra was the only means to prevent his imminent death. All visitors to Hua Hin should take advantage of any opportunity to witness this form of theatre and to take home memories of this exotic part of Thai culture; it’s the real thing.

15 59 La Botte is a Barrel of Fun

Sandwiched between Cicada Market and Tamarind Market like the meat in an Italian hoagie, La Botte is an Italian restaurant not to be missed when in Khao Takiab. Owner Roberto met us upon arrival and escorted us to a table on the vast terrace. La Botte (barrel or cask in Italian) has been open for two-and-a-half years, and continues to grow in popularity with both locals and tourists. We started with my favourite dish of the night (actually one of my favourite dishes in Hua Hin), the Carpaccio di Spada - swordfish carpaccio. Drizzled with the perfect combination of olive oil and lemon, the fish is also dotted with slivers of celery adding a nice crunch to the softness of the fish. Following close behind was a Tuna Pizza. Thin-crusted with plenty of tuna and not drowning in cheese, it became apparent why La Botte calls itself a pizzeria as well as a restaurant. The most popular pizzas are the ham and pineapple, and the parma ham, rocket and parmesan pizza. The calzones (basically a folded pizza) are also well liked by the regulars.

Many of the pastas at La Botte are homemade, like the squid ink tagliolini we sampled with the dish Tagliolini al Nero di Seppia. The spaghetti was cooked al dente, and was topped with plump shrimp, cherry tomatoes and zucchini, all in a rich tomato sauce. Our final course was the Filetto Manzo al Pepe Verde, a New Zealand tenderloin with a green peppercorn sauce. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, the steak was tender and juicy. For dessert we were tempted with the homemade Tiramisu, but we just didn’t have any room left. We did, however, have just enough room for a small grappa - after all, grappa is fermented in barrels similar to the namesake of the restaurant. And, there is always room for grappa!
