4 Cover Story Unless born before June 1946, everyone reading this edition of Hua Hin Today can make the proud statement; “I was born in the reign of King Rama IX of Thailand.” This month sees the conclusion of a year of mourning after the death of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 13th October last year with the Royal Cremation ceremonies taking place from 25th to 29th October. This event in the history of Thailand is without modern precedent and dominating the thoughts and emotions of the Thai people with few having any experience of living in the reign of any other Thai monarch. Thailand will witness scenes testament to the amazing impact that King has had upon all levels of Thai society as the beloved and revered ‘Father of the Nation’ who was bestowed with the title; King Bhumibol the Great in 1987. Our readers are urged to respect the occasion and to offer a subdued and reverent approach over this month. Hua Hin Today also recognises and respects this significance both in this edition and with a special feature in November following the Royal Cremation ceremonies taking place in Bangkok and nationwide. The next chapter in the illustrious history of the Chakri Dynasty will be the ordination of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun as King Rama X later in the year. 4 Thailand Awaits the Royal Cremation
HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej; King Rama IX of Thailand, passed away on October 13th last year at 88 years of age, plunging Thailand into deep mourning. A large number of Thais continue to this day to wear black to grieve over his death. Throughout his seven-decade reign, King Rama IX worked tirelessly to improve the well-being of his people. In return, he won much love and reverence of his subjects. This year-long period between death and cremation has allowed a profound display of love and respect from the Thai people.
Sanam Luang will become the Royal Funeral Grounds during the cremation ceremonies According to Thai Buddhist belief, religious rites and merit-making ceremonies carried out between death and cremation ease the path for the deceased and enables the departed to benefit in the next life. While the body is still present, the spirit can benefit by gifts offered, sermons preached and religious chants uttered in its presence. The cremation ceremony marks the final departure of the spirit from the mortal world. The Royal Cremation Ceremony for the late King of Thailand is scheduled for October 25th – 29th. The actual cremation will be held on October 26th (Thursday) which has also now been declared a public holiday. The ceremony will take place in Bangkok at Sanam Luang, the royal field in front of the Grand Palace. This has traditionally been the venue for royal cremations and is where the intricate 50 metre funeral pyre has been constructed by specialist workers and skilled artisans. The structure represents Mount Meru, the place where Buddhist and Hindu gods reside. Deputy Prime Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn in his capacity as the chairman of the committee in charge of the Royal Funeral has revealed that His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be personally performing a ceremony to install the top of the nine-spired funeral pyre at 5.00 pm on October 18th, marking the official completion of construction. The five-day schedule includes a royal merit-making ceremony at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall at the Grand Palace on the first day. On the second day, the royal cremation will take place at the Royal Crematorium at Sanam Luang. The royal remains will be collected on the third day. Another royal merit-making ceremony will be held on the fourth day to bless the remains, which will occur at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall. On the fifth day, food will be served to monks at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall before the Royal Urn is brought to the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall.
During the reign of King Rama III, the King wished to demonstrate that Thailand was such a fertile, flourishing country that even the area in front of the Grand Palace could be cultivated. Sanam Luang was then a normal plot of land, used for growing rice. When there was a Royal Funeral, it would be smoothed over to prepare for the event. During the reign of King Rama IV, when the ground was still used for farming, King Rama IV changed its official name from Thong Phra Meru to Thung Sanam Luang. Sanam Luang has been used as the cremation ground for all of Thailand’s kings and Royal Family members except for King Rama VII, who died in England. Mythical creatures, angels and gods are coming to life at Sanam Luang, thanks to the tireless, devout and often volunteer work of artists and craftsmen. They are building a monument for a single moment: the cremation of a beloved king. More than 100 sculptures and statues will be placed inside a crematorium complex. “This event has brought together talented artists from across the country to create the most amazing art pieces for the late king,” said painter Charoen Marboot.
The chariot was first built in 1795 in the time of King Rama I for the cremation of his father. The chariot has been used 25 times, most recently in 2012. Inch by gilded inch, the chariot to take Thailand’s late king on his last journey has been restored by skilled artisans over many months. Built of wood and decorated with gold and mirrors, the 13.7 tonne chariot is 18 metres long, 11.2 metres high and 4.8 metres wide. At the Fine Arts Department, close by the cremation site, the artisans, craftsmen and artists have applied the last layers of paint to an array of deities and creatures from ancient epics as well as statues of former kings of Thailand. Many of the artists provided their skills for free. A total of 441 troops from the army’s Department of Ordnance have rehearsed the hauling of chariots; 79 for the leading chariot, 222 for the greatest chariot or Phra Maha Pichai Ratcharot, and 110 for the Kren Bandai Nak, a structure for placing and moving the royal urn.

“Many (artists) here are loyal and faithful to the late king,” said Surathkij Pheeraphongsil, a director of the Fine Arts Department. “Nobody complains about difficulties or about being tired because the late king endured more than us.” For 23-year-old Waritha Songtua, a recent art graduate. “As a Thai who has ability in art, I can use it to give back to the country, because to conserve art and culture is like protecting the nation,” she said.
The Wat Huay Mongkol temple complex, located some 15 kilometres west of Hua Hin, is famous for its enormous statue of one of Thailand’s most famous monks, Luang Phor Thuad. This complex will become the centre of Hua Hin’s recognition of the Royal Cremation and visited by thousands of local people wishing to pay their last respects.

A Focus on the ‘Great Victory’ Chariot The chariot will carry King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s body to the site of the cremation. Known as the “Great Victory” Chariot, the vehicle is believed to take the divine back to heaven. The ritual use of immense chariot, which required 295 men to carry it, dates back to the Ayutthaya period although it was later refurbished to include wheels. It was most recently used in 2011 after the death of the daughter of King Rama VI.
Grand processions will show Thai ceremonial splendors to the world Six grand processions are planned for the ceremonies. During the five days, there will also be performances and exhibitions in honour of the late king. The event will be will be one of the most expensive in history with a budget of 3 billion THB. For the millions of Thais who loved the king, this event is very personal and they are eager to contribute to his final goodbye and ceremonies.
The Story of Sanam Luang Sanam Luang has been a place of central importance for the Thai people for centuries. Sanam Luang is Thai for “royal ground”, and it is a place where the King performs state ceremonies. In the past, Sanam Luang was an open field located adjacent to the Grand Palace. Running For Mental Health The beneficiary of the inaugural ‘Hua Hin Run to Give’ at the Cha-Am Naresuan Army Camp was the Hua Hin Hospital Psychiatric Centre. Another agenda item was to raise awareness about mental health issues and the unfortunate stigma associated with this serious worldwide health concern. ‘Run to Give’ involved around 230 starters completing either a 5 kilometre or 3 kilometre run (or walk for some), for the majority not as a fiercely contested race, but an early morning (6 AM) exercise and a good reason for an outdoor excursion with family or friends. By paying for the privilege of participating and receiving a souvenir’ T-shirts, over 150,000 THB was raised for a cause which is gaining more attention each year worldwide.
The Thailand Department of Mental Health believes that at least three million Thais are known to suffer from some form or other of mental illness. A study has concluded that around 20% of Thais, or about one in every five, suffer from some form of mental illness. The most common diseases were psychosis, anxiety disorders and depression. The World Health Organization is concerned about the rising incidence of depression across the globe. The World Health Organisation has moved depression to number two on its priority list, immediately below heart disease.

8 The Kra Isthmus Canal – A Maritime Silk Road to Rival the Suez and Panama
Mooted throughout Thailand’s history, the Thai Canal project is an infrastructure project that has been at the conceptual development phase for more than three centuries and conceived back in 1677
An Asian equivalent of the Suez or Panama canals, the so-called Kra Canal would slice through the Malay Peninsula some 800km south of Bangkok and about 200km north of Thailand’s border with Malaysia, linking the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea at roughly the same latitude as the island of Phuket. Until the 19th century, technology constraints made it impossible for the project to proceed. Toward the end of the 19th century, it became technically feasible with several proposals made by France and Britain during the reigns of King Rama IV and V. The 20th Century saw several attempts made to bring the project back, but coming to an end every time for one of three main reasons: lack of funding, national
security, and changes of government. The Canal project was reborn in 2001, with the hope of rebuilding the country’s economy and as a platform for sustainability with many rounds of seminars, debates and a “preparatory” feasibility study.
What is The Kra Isthmus Canal? The Kra Isthmus Canal would constitute a mega-project, a passageway that would connect the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand at the Isthmus of Kra, Thailand, the narrow ‘neck’ of Thailand heading south with the provinces of Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon featuring. A canal connection somewhere south of Chumphon would save shipping costs and time as the route is shorter by 1,000 km.
The canal’s purpose would be to bypass the narrow, traffic-choked and strategically sensitive Malacca Strait; the world’s busiest trade route with arate of accidents is twice as high as the Suez Canal and four times higher than the Panama Canal. The link would be between China, Japan and other East Asian nations with the oil fields of the Middle East and major markets in Europe, Africa and India. One of big winners could be Sri Lanka, which lies astride the busy sea lanes of the northern Indian Ocean, making it an obvious choice for a new shipping hub As the enterprise of a decade with a cost of at least US $30 billion - around 8% of Thailand’s GDP -, the canal would obviously create jobs in the Kingdom and beyond, but it would also facilitate global trade and stand as a symbol of international cooperation. Although the proposal is projected to provide many economic and trade benefits to Thailand and to the region as a whole, steps toward its development have been problematic. Apart from financing issues, there has been much debate over the costs for trade, the costs for the environment, national and regional security concerns as well as major concerns related to political and economic relationships in the region. Thailand has much to gain from a Kra Canal project at the same time as Singapore has just as much to lose. The Kra Canal, which has the potential of diverting half the shipping tonnage now calling at Singapore ports up north to Thailand, will have an impact on the Republic’s economy which will be huge and permanent.
A ‘Rail Canal’ maybe one innovative alternative
Recent Developments A Chinese company has recently completed a feasibility study, deciding on the best route for the canal. The Thai Canal Association for Study and Development has been set up to survey the proposed route. The Association has set up local committees along the proposed route to sign up supporters, spell out compensation proposals and explain the job opportunities a canal would create. A book has been prepared promoting the Kra Canal, with 10,000 copies, 1200 copies being distributed to leading institutional figures. According to the book, the waterway alone would cost $28 billion. A surrounding special economic zone would cost another $22 billion, which would fund related industries and infrastructure, including new cities and artificial offshore islands built with excavated earth. The combined project would eventually create some 2.5 million jobs according to the promotional book -- enough to employ one in four of the roughly 10 million inhabitants of southern Thailand. Another high-powered pro-canal group is the Thai-Chinese Culture and Economy Association of Thailand, headed by former Thai Deputy Prime Minister Bhokin Bhalakula. In recent speeches in China, Bhokin has called for the Kra Canal to be considered for inclusion in Beijing’s BRI initiative. In September this year, the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and Thai Canal Association for Study and Development hosted an international conference: TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE PATHS TO THAILAND’S FUTURE, THAI CANAL: Comprehensive Study of New Logistics Systems for the Maritime Silk Road.
Thai labour groups have rallied in support of the project “As the development of the Kra Isthmus Canal (Thai Canal) is of great significance to Thailand, it is recommended that the relevant departments of Thailand start the feasibility study of the canal as soon as possible,” said Prof Zhou Dawei from Peking University. He said, the Thai Canal would open up the most spectacular sea corridors in human history, like the Suez and Panama Canals which would connect international maritime channel network. Another expert Zhao Gang from Beijing’s Scheme of International Cooperation in Renewable Energy said, Thailand could not make the right judgment and decision without conducting a complete scientific feasibility study about the Thai Canal. Chairman of Thai Canal Association of Study and Development General Pongthep Tesprateep in his opening speech at a conference earlier this year, called on the Thai government to create a National Committee to complete a feasibility study. and control in animals and human beings; animal shelter management and integration of human–animal disease control in communities; awareness, data collection, analysis and research through its “Rabies One Data” centre; project monitoring and evaluation; and research, development and transfer of technology. “Her Royal Highness is championing a One Health approach to eliminate rabies in both Thailand and in the SouthEast Asia Region,” said Dr Bernadette Abela-Ridder, Team Leader of WHO’s Neglected Zoonotic Diseases unit. “This will greatly contribute to reaching our global target of zero human rabies deaths by 2030.”

It is transmitted via bites and scratches from infected animals; dogs are responsible for around 99% of human cases.

10 10 Year Retirement Visa Now in Effect
Are you a retiree wanting to live in Thailand? Did you already retire in Thailand years ago, and are sick of having to deal with retirement visa renewals every year?
Have you been saying for years the Thai government needs to make it easier for people to retire in Thailand? If so, you will be thrilled to know the Thai government has just instituted a new 10-year retirement visa that, if you qualify, could make your life so much easier. So, what is this 10-year visa for retirees in Thailand, where do you go to apply for it and how do you get it? HOW DO YOU QUALIFY FOR THE 10YEAR RETIREMENT VISA IN THAILAND? The qualifications you must be able to fulfill to be awarded a 10-year retirement visa are: You must be over the age of 50. You must be from one of 14 countries — Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, France, Finland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada You must have at least 3 million THB in a Thai bank account, or have a provable overseas income of at least 100,000 THB per month. You must have health insurance cover which pays out at least 10,000 US dollars You must not have any pending criminal convictions or charges. It is likely you will probably also have to show your residence yellow book (tibean bahn), or proof that you are the owner of a condominium or a rental agreement. And, of course, there will be the usual slew
of photographs. If you can meet all these qualifications, however, you can now apply for the 10-year retirement visa in Thailand. Although, technically, it is not a 10year retirement visa at all. Instead it is a 10-year visa that has to be re-applied for every five years, as the government wants to make sure you continue to meet all the stipulations throughout its term. Still, a five-year retirement visa for Thailand that is easily renewable is still much better than the current one-year retirement visa you have to reapply for every year. HOW TO APPLY Although the visa went into effect on 11th August, quite a few people at various Thai Immigration offices have not heard of its existence. It is also not yet listed on Thailand’s Immigration Department website. In fact, even though Lt. Gen. Natthathorn Prohsunthorn the commander of the Thai Immigration police has announced the existence of the new visa and is pushing for people to apply for it, many staff at various Immigration offices around the country have still have not heard of it and do not know how to help any retiree who shows up in their office and asks for it. That being said, Lt. Gen. Natthathorn Prohsunthorn says it can be applied for at any provincial immigration office.
Thailand Ranked Amongst the Cheapest Places to Buy a Beer A new study has ranked Thailand amongst the cheapest countries in the world to buy a beer. The study, carried out by UK based FX comparison site Travelex, produced an International Beer Index for 2017, looked at the average price of half a litre of beer in 32 countries which are popular holiday destinations for British holidaymakers. The study ranked Thailand in 6th place, where the average price of a beer was found to be 62 THB. The cheapest country to buy a beer was found to be Bulgaria, followed by Czech Republic and Hungary which were in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The most expensive country to buy a beer was found to be the United Arab Emirates where the average price of a beer will cost you approximately 378 THB, around 9 times the cost in Bulgaria!

Smuggled Pangolin Seized in Pranburi
The Customs Department has seized 136 live pangolin and 450 kilograms of pangolin scales worth 2.5 million THB that had been smuggled from Malaysia into Thailand to be forwarded to China.
Fire Fighting Drill 2017
The Permanent Secretary of Hua Hin Municipality, Mr. Jeerawat Phramanee, has visited an area of Hin Lek Fire Hill and monitored the annual firefighting drill 2017 carried out by the Division of Disaster Prevention and Protection, Hua Hin Municipality. Attended by police officers from the Hua Hin Police Office, the event aims to provide training to solve future fire problems. Effective operations need the integration of police offers and municipal staff.. The firefighting drill was both theoretical and practical. This included understanding how fires start, techniques for extinguishing fires, the use of chemical fire extinguishers and how to extinguish fires caused by gas and oil.

The “most trafficked mammals in the world” were confiscated following a tip-off that pangolins were being smuggled from Malaysia into Thailand and transported in two pickup trucks that had already passed through Chumphon. Officers at Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Pranburi customs checkpoint searched two suspicious trucks and found pangolins and scales. The endangered pangolin – which fetches high prices in Asia for its scales, which are believed to have medicinal qualities, and meat – is banned in international commercial trade per the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) and from import and export by Thailand’s Wildlife Protection Act 1992. So far this year, the Customs Department has seized pangolins and their products weighing 2.9 tons and worth 29 million THB, and also confiscated 16,730 pieces of elephant tusks and ivory products worth 7.5 THB million. Pangolin scales are used in traditional Chinese medicine and contain keratin, a protein also found in rhino horn. Pangolin meat is considered a delicacy in Vietnam and some parts of China. A U.N. wildlife conference last year approved a ban on trade in all eight species of Asian and African pangolins. Director-general of Thai Customs Department, Kulit Sombatsiri, said the market value and demand of the animals and their body parts remained high, which drove smuggling. “The smugglers keep doing this because the payment is so high and there are lots of demand for the consumption of these wild animals,” Kulit said. – The Nation

12 Khao Tao Reservoir Renovations
The Hua Hin Mayor Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, along with the Deputy Mayor Mr. Montree Chuphu and municipal staff have been monitoring the progress of renovation work of the Khao Tao Reservoir. The renovation work, with a 35 million THB budget, includes fixing and adding
walking paths along the reservoir, adding handrails and installing new electrical lights along the path. The work began in May and was completed in September. The reservoir is a well-known local tourist attraction with scenic landscapes as a royal initiative of the late King Bhumibol.

Floating Merit on the Waves
The bountiful sea is much-appreciated daily by the fishermen of Hua Hin. But these nightly seafarers and hunter-gatherers, who bring back seafood to our tables and markets each morning, also know the toll that has been paid to the changeable sea in the past in the lost lives of their companions. An important event, the Annual Shrine Merit-making by the Sea, was held on the weekend of September 23-24 at the seaside Wat Thapthip Thong Shrine, next to the Hilton Hotel in central Hua Hin, celebrating the maritime history of our prosperous seaside resort town. The Hua Hin Municipality, Tourism Authority of Thailand and the local fishery association organised this annual event. The event remembers the lives of those had been lost to the waves over the years while trying to make a daily living from our sea. This is similar to ceremonies in many other cultures around the world; sometimes known as a ‘Blessing of the Fleet’. In the same way as the Loy Kratong full-moon festival allows both the sinking of bad karma and the floating up of prayers for a better future, this sea merit-making lets friends and relatives of fishermen lost at sea remember their loved ones. In the ceremony, a colourfullydecorated small fishing boat waits at the seaside shine on Saturday September. The craft is loaded with small passengers in the form of little plaster stucco dolls, of the size of a tall glass, to which are attached pieces of paper written with names of those who had died at sea. The dolls are painted with faces and Thai costumes and can be bought with donations to the shrine.
The ceremonial boat is then taken in a joyful procession around the town for participants to add more dolls and money donations for the shrine, before the boat returns for to the Wat for the night. On Sunday morning, there is another quiet ceremony to bless the guardian stones that warns boats of dangerous submerged rocks in their location. There are moments here for further quiet contemplation to remember those who were on the fishing boats that had sunk at sea. At the temple, nine monks chant their blessing on the dolls before lunch is served to the participating crowd. The fishing craft, festooned in bright colours and brim-full with collective memory, is launched onto the waves to be dragged out and left floating on the open sea until eventually sinking by itself to the bottom. With that symbolic sinking go the recollection of past life losses and the hope of protection and good fortune. Today’s fishermen then begin to ready their nets and squid lines once again to gather what the Hua Hin ocean may give back to them tonight.

October 23rd every year marks “King Chulalongkorn Day” or known in Thai as “Wan Piyamaharaj Day”. It is the memorial day of the passing away of King Chulalongkorn, otherwise known as King Rama V. King Chulalongkorn led several major reforms in Thailand, for example in the areas of Thai educational system, military affairs, State Railway and Slave Liberation Act without bloodshed in Thailand. King Chulalongkorn is the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. He is the son of King Mongkut and the grandfather of the late King of Thailand, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He paid state visits to Singapore and Java twice and India once as observationtours to observe the political systems
and administration of the European rulers who governed colonies in South Asia and South-east. Asia. He brought back new knowledge and technology to apply in Thai government. Royal tradition such as uniform, haircut and audience the king were changed to the western style. King Chulalongkorn is considered one of the greatest kings of Thailand. His reign from 1868 to 1910 was characterised by extensive social and economic development, including the abolition of slavery and corvee (state labor service). At the Thailand International Exhibitions & Events Forum 2017 Bearing in mind ongoing improvements in connectivity, mega infrastructures, and incentives to enhance new investments in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), the initiatives are expected to magnify the recognition of each established ‘bleisure’ (blended business and leisure) destination, the bureau said. There is great potential in the growth of the MICE sector (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) and the resulting income distribution as it becomes increasingly important in developing the country, said Supawan Teerarat, vicepresident of the bureau’s strategic and business development. “Thailand is moving forward in all areas of development to steer the national economy to Thailand 4.0 era,” Supawan said. “The government encourages public and private partnerships as part of the transition, along with policies that enhance
a new business environment, innovation, as well as promotion of hard and soft infrastructure.” The exhibition sector generates significant economic impact for Thai society. Based on results of an economic impact study in 2015, the Thai MICE industry helped circulate total expenditure in the country’s economic system of 220 billion THBt, In the exhibition sector specifically, generated more than 53,000 million THB and more than 43,000 jobs were created. Hua Hin is known to have a plethora of upmarket resorts which typically feature conference areas in a setting which provides for all the necessary ‘leisure’ components of ‘bleisure’. Besides that, King Chulalongkorn was the first Thai King to send the Royal Princes to be educated in Europe. Throughout Chulalongkorn’s reign, radical writers had their works published for the first time. Works that were previously banned were allowed to be read by the public once again. The most important royal contribution was the announcement of Slave Abolition Act. Slave Abolition made him the Beloved Great King of all people of Siam. In the beginning of his reign, more than 1/3 of the Thai population was slaves. There was an endless continuity of offspring slaves who were slaves for the rest lives. Traditionally children of slaves also became slaves. The King also modernised government and streamlined the administration of the
country by dividing it into provinces and districts. He replaced the traditional lunar calendar with the Western calendar. Siam was a Buddhist country but he made it clear that other religions (including Islam and Christianity) should have the freedom to practice without fear of persecution. Communications in the country were improved greatly with the introduction of postal services, the telegraph and the construction of Thailand’s first railway (from Bangkok to Ayutthaya). King Chulalongkorn ascended the throne in 1868 at the age of only 15. His Majesty then passed away on October 23rd 1910 at the age of 57. He had ruled what was then Siam, for 42 years.
Historic Renovation of the Temple of Dawn Almost Complete Sitting majestically on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, the legendary Wat Arun is one of the most striking riverside landmarks of Thailand. The most spectacular view of the glittering monument can be seen from the east side of the river at sunset, when the spires of Wat Arun make an impressive silhouette against the skyline. The world-famous Temple of Dawn pagoda, internationally known as Wat Arun, will officially be reopened at the end of this year after being closed to visitors for three years to undergo repairs and renovation along with other structures in the temple compound. The original tiles covering the 81.85 metre high stupa, which were set aside during 1999 renovations, will be used. The Department of Fine Arts carried out the repairs and renovation. They also carried out an underground exploration of the stupa’s foundation. Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor says, “This was the biggest repair and renovation work to take place on the temple in recent memory using the latest restoration technology. The importance of this work, and that of Wat Arun to Thailand’s history, culture and tourism industry cannot be overstated. “It used to be the home of the Emerald Buddha, and over the years has now become one of the most visited tourism sites in all of Thailand. The competition of the renovation and official reopening celebration in December this year is the source of great pride to all Thai people.” This Wat or Buddhist temple is an architectural representation of Mount Meru, the centre of the world in Buddhist cosmology. In the mythology of Tibetan Buddhism, Mount Meru is located somewhere beyond the physical plane of reality, in a realm of perfection and transcendence. The four-corner prang
Wat Arum will soon shed the scaffolding and return to being one of the most striking riverside landmarks of Bangkok of Wat Arun, which house images of the guardian gods of the four directions, reinforces this mystical symbolism. It was initially envisioned by King Taksin the Great in 1768 after fighting his way out of Ayutthaya, when he arrived at this Buddhist temple just as dawn was breaking. He ordered the temple’s first renovation and renamed it Wat Chaeng, the Temple of Dawn. A 10-day long celebration of the completion of Wat Arun’s renovations will take place at the end of this year from 27 December through to 5 January, 2018. The festivities will include a tribute to King Taksin the Great and Thai dance performances. There will also be an exhibition on the temple’s history, showcasing the importance of its role in Thai society, highlighted by a display of award-winning photos of the temple taken over the years with the first images of Wat Arun dating back to 1865. UNAIDS Applauds Thai Strategy to End AIDS Epidemic by 2030
New HIV infections in Thailand have dropped 50% in six years – the biggest decline in Asia and the Pacific, according to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
UNAIDS has applauded Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health for its bold new national AIDS strategy, which provides a road map for ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat in Thailand by 2030. The National AIDS Committee has launched the 2017-2030 National AIDS Strategy with a 13-year plan to ensure an effective, cost-efficient and high-impact HIV response. The new strategy commits to a fasttrack phase, where an all-out effort is made to reach the global “90-90-90” treatment targets by 2020.
This refers to a situation where 90% of people living with HIV know their HIV status, 90% of people who know their HIVpositive status are accessing treatment, and 90% of people on treatment have viral suppression. Thailand has already achieved the first 90 and the other two goals are within reach. The country’s epidemic is concentrated among key populations, including men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs and sex workers. The strategy includes tailored programs for specific populations in specific locations. It also includes plans to increase the integration of HIV health services with those for Hepatitis C, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. Thailand is one of a handful of countries in Asia to almost completely selffund its HIV response, with nearly 90% of total AIDS spending from domestic public sources. – The Nation

New Cigarette Taxes Imposed
The Excise Department has imposed a cigarette tax based on tiered pricing, with expensive brands charged a higher rate than cheaper ones, with a goal of striking a balance between public health and government revenue. The new excise law was scheduled for enforcement from Saturday, September 16th. Imposing a single rate tax regardless of cigarette prices will take a toll on cheap cigarettes produced by Thailand Tobacco Monopoly, while expensive cigarette brands will benefit, said an informed source at the Finance Ministry. Such a tax structure could encourage people to smoke imported cigarettes, said the source. A single excise tax rate for cigarettes could affect the Excise Department’s revenue if the rate is set too low, but it could hurt low-income smokers if the rate is too high, the source said. A new excise duty on cigarettes is part of the new excise law, in which suggested retail prices will replace the existing exfactory price and cost, insurance and freight (CIF) values as a base for excise tax computation. The change is aimed at creating a fairer system for manufacturers and importers after some businesses were found to have understated their tax bills. The new excise duty rates for alcohol, cigarettes and playing cards have been have been before the cabinet for approval to ward off stockpiling ahead of the effective date. The cabinet recently approved organic laws concerning the new excise tax rates, which will apply to all 21 products subject to excise duties except alcohol, cigarettes and playing cards.
Even though the Excise Department will adopt the tax neutrality concept for the change in tax base calculation, some products, particularly sugar-sweetened ready-to-drink tea and coffee, will lose its excise duty-free privilege, while other soft drinks with added sugar will be subject to a higher tax bill two years after the new law is enforced if they fail to lower sugar content. The sugary drink tax will see one litre bottles and cans of soft drinks with sugar content of 0-6 milligrams as tax exempt, while more than 6 to 8mg will be subject to a 10-satang tax. Those with more than 8 to 10mg will be taxed 30 satang, more than 10 to 14mg 50 satang, and more than 14mg will be hit with a levy of one baht. Malika Bhumivarn, a partner at Bolliger & Co Consulting Ltd and a specialist on trade and customs, disagreed with tiered pricing for alcohol and cigarettes, saying products with equal harm to health should be levied at the same rate. Moreover, alcohol and cigarettes are major excise tax contributors, so their tax structure should be simple to discourage tax evasion and reduce loopholes, she said. The experience of other countries and international organizations suggests a tiered-tax system reduces efficiency in collecting such taxes, said Malika. She said the Excise Department should be more concerned with its key information, the ease of doing business to encourage entrepreneurs, and linking information among tax-collecting agencies. – Bangkok Post

The Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich, which traditionally runs until the first Sunday in October, now runs until 3rd October. 12th October Spain The Fiesta Nacional de España is the national day of Spain. It is held annually and the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival in the Americas, a day also celebrated in other countries. In October 7th, 1987, the name was changed to Fiesta Nacional. Spain’s “national day” had moved around several times during the 20th century; establishing it on the day of the international Columbus celebration was part of a compromise between conservatives, who wanted to emphasize the status of the monarchy and Spain’s history, and Republicans, who wanted to commemorate Spain’s burgeoning democracy with an official holiday. 28th October Czech Republic The 28th October is an unlikely date for Czechs to be celebrating their national holiday. After all, it commemorates the founding of the state of Czechoslovakia which was established in 1918 which ceased to exist 74 years later, when Czechs and Slovaks went their separate ways at the end of 1992. Czechs went on as if nothing had happened. To this day wreathes are laid, the national anthem is played, and except when the holiday falls on a weekend everybody enjoys a day off work. 29th October Turkey After Turkey’s victory in the War of Independence (1919-1923), the Turkish parliament proclaimed the new Turkish state as a republic. A new constitution, which the parliament adopted on October 29th, 1923, replaced the constitution of the Ottoman Empire. The leader in the Turkish War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, became the country’s first president on the same day. According to Atatürk, Republic Day is Turkey’s most important holiday. Many people in Turkey celebrate Republic Day by attending performances and participating in traditional processions with flags and musical bands. 22 Wat Tanodluang – The Cha-Am ‘Boat Temple’
Places of significance to those practicing or appreciating the Buddhist religion should always be treated with respect. This means always behaving in a way which does not offend or disturb those at worship.
Wat Tanodluang known locally as the ‘Boat Temple’ An example of this need applies to a very special place from a Buddhist perspective just north of ChaAm we recently visited, colloquially known as the ‘Boat Temple’ although its real name is Wat Tanodluang. There are 18 resident monks at the temple apart from a novice or two. However you’ll always find some other Thai people about paying their respects. Tourists are not really in evidence. The complex is more likely to be busy when there are Buddhist celebrations such as the ordination of new monks. The temple was built in the Ayutthaya Period and some ruins remain from the original structures. Abbots dating back to 1869 to the present day are listed. .
Check with someone of authority (a Monk?) first before entering. Communication may need gestures to show your request to enter buildings or taking photographs if there is a language issue. The ‘guardians’ of the temple will soon let you know what is OK. Behave in a respectful manner and you will find your hosts most affable and welcoming. About The Boat Temple The main feature of this place is the appearance of the main building called the Mahusot or ordination hall. This building is clearly in the shape of a VERY large boat hull with a more traditional Thai temple as the ‘superstructure’. The inspiration for this structure is the importance of the local fishing villages nearby, though the design was based on a temple a long way from the ocean.

Wat Tanodluang is ‘steaming’ through the jungle The protocol for visiting this superb example of Thai Buddhist culture is really quite simple. These ‘Rules’ should apply to any temple visits:
Entering the inside of the building from the ‘deck’ of the boat will probably need an escort from a Monk who is assigned as the day’s guardian.
Golden Buddhist images and murals with a nautical theme adorn the interior On our visit we were invited to enter by a Monk who proved to be a very hospitable ‘tour guide’. He pointed out the magnificent marble base of the shrine and mentioned that the cost of this alone was said to be in the vicinity of 100 million THB. At the rear of the building is a huge mural based on drawings made by His Majesty King Rama IX of Thailand. Where: Take the road from Cha-Am North past the Cha-Am Hospital and follow the signs towards Puktien Beach. About 7 kilometres on and you will see the temple on the left hand side of this road. Welcome Community Support after a Cha-Am Tragedy A fire has completely overtaken the life of a Ban Bangkao (Cha-Am) fisherman, his wife and son.
A short circuit in their home, led to the fire which destroyed all the family’s household and personal possessions and gutted the house. The fisherman and his wife were at sea at the time and their son was attending school only to discover the destruction upon their return. Left with only the clothes they were wearing, no insurance or savings, community support was the only way to rebuild their lives. However this support was quickly available from both official agencies and companies and from the expat community of Cha-Am. There have been pledges made for various aspects of the materials and work needed. The OKay Supermarket, a local store largely catering to the shopping needs of foreigners in Cha-Am, also began an urgent appeal for financial aid. A sum of 38,000 THB was contributed by owner Paul Graff’s customers and friends literally within days of the tragedy. Paul is very eager to thank all the donors and has been busy supervising the delivery of the building materials purchased. The Ban Bangkao municipal office was able to mobilise practical support within the community and with an adjacent plot of land quickly cleared and ready, army assistance then materialised with a workforce for the re-build. During our visit to the site of the fire, raw emotions were still close to the surface of the family involved; however the very rapid response and practical support provided meant that the family has been brought back from the brink and may soon be smiling again. Hua Hin Features in 20 Year Rail Master Plan
The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning has unveiled a 20-year master plan for rail development, worth more than 2.7 trillion THB, to facilitate special economic zones, tourism and local development. The plan covers double-track rail development stretching 2,777 km; metre gauge rail routes with a total distance of 2,352 km; standard gauge rail routes for high-speed trains, stretching 2,457 km; the establishment of container yards; and the use of electric trains for rail transport. According to OTP sources, the master plan will see around 1.9 trillion THB funded by the state and the rest will come from the private sector. The short-term plan runs from this year to 2021 for double-track rail routes covering three sections — ChachoengsaoKlong Sip Kao-Kaeng Khoi; Jira-Khon Kaen; and Hua Hin-Prachuap Khiri Khan. The high-speed train projects carried out between 2022 and 2026 will run between Bangkok and Rayong; from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima; and between Bangkok and Hua Hin. The long-term section will be from 2027 to 2036 running from Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai, from Hua Hin to Surat Thani and from Surat Thani to Padang Besar. Container yards will be built in Wa Ko in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Nong Pladuk in Ratchaburi as part of the shortterm plan. The Hua Hin railway station is clearing up buildings in the railroad area that stand in the way of the construction of the double track rail project. Thailand has secured rights to host a MotoGP race next year, after years of lobbying to bring top motorcycle racing to the kingdom. The MotoGP 2017 season consisted of races at 18 circuits with the Buriram International Circuit hosting the only new event on the 2018.
MotoGP owner Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has joined Sakon Wannapong, the Governor of Sport Authority of Thailand, for the signing of the contract after giving the green light with recent talks Florence, Italy. The talks took three hours and concluded with Dorna Sports being willing to give Thailand rights for three years beginning in 2018 up to 2020. Inaugurated in 2014, the Chang International Circuit is a 4.5 km long track with 12 turns. Apart from the World Superbike Championship, the circuit has also hosted the World Touring Car Championship, Super GT and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

As per 2017, the first official test of ‘18 will be held at Sepang, currently penciled in for January 28-30, before teams head on to Buriram for the second test on February 16-18, replacing Phillip Island on MotoGP’s winter test schedule ahead of the 2018 season,. The first race weekend is likely to be held from 5-7 October 2018 at the Buriram Circuit, just before the championships in Japan, Australia and Malaysia, but there has been no official confirmation of the date from MotoGP or owners Dorna Sports as yet. The SAT said it expected to receive confirmation shortly.

In 2014 he unveiled the $58.9 million Formula One-certified circuit in the 30,000 population town. The motorcycling extravaganza could pour millions of dollars into Buriram, a huge sum for a province that was once among Thailand’s poorest. Thailand’s government has earmarked millions of dollars to win the hosting of MotoGP in partnership with private sponsors. The 2018 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season will be the 70th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season.
Thai Women Enter the Male Dominated World of Taxi Motorbike Drivers Thailand’s capital is well-known for its gridlocked roads. During Bangkok’s intense rush hour, only the city’s army of motorcycle taxi drivers keep things moving.
Women, deprived of other economic opportunities and attracted by the freedom the job offers, are pushing into this traditionally male bastion of the national workforce.

“I had a friend who was working at this queue, near my house,” says Sangngian. “So I asked her to get me an interview with the group leader.” She now operates from 7am to 4pm six days a week. This has created good quality of life for the driver. “I like the freedom the driving gives me,” she shares. “I can choose my work hours and spend my free time with my son.”
A usually male dominated taxi rank Perhaps unsurprisingly, women face challenges when attempting to enter this male-centric sector. “When I first started driving, some men in the queue were teasing me,”
Sangngian shared. “Once I had proven to be a good driver, the harassment stopped. Some male colleagues also tried to push me out of the job because of the fear of competition.” Women drivers are popular in Jakarta Tens of thousands of men from Thailand’s rural provinces migrated to Bangkok following the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, and many of them took up the job of motorbike taxi driver. Kyoko Kusakabe, a professor at the Asian Institute of Technology north of Bangkok, sees similarities in this dynamic within other sectors of the Thai economy. “At the beginning, the men make life difficult for their female counterparts because they are scared to lose their social status as hard workers if too many women enter their profession and perform just as well as they do,” she said. While women entering a traditionally male line of work is good for equality, Kusakabe is concerned that it is a sign of larger economic problems. “There are less and less unskilled job positions,” she suggested. “Low-paid jobs in construction and markets are filled by Cambodian and Burmese migrants.”

30 Tours of Royal Cremation Structures to be Allowed in November The Ministry of Culture has made preparations for the public to be able to view and tour structures created for the Royal Cremation of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in the month of November. Minister of Culture Weera Rojpojanarat, today revealed after a meeting with organizers of the royal cremation ceremonies that the group had decided to allow citizens to view all structures created for the event, between November 1 and 30 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
The tour will include all structures built for the proceedings as well as an exhibition on His Majesty the late King’s royal works and life. Replicas of the structures and information will be available during the tour, with visitors to be able to scan AR Codes for further details. The codes will be particularly useful for the blind and the wheel-chair bound. Up to 100,000 people are expected to take the tour each day with sessions to allow 500 visitors at a time. Shuttle buses will be available from locations such as BTS and MRT stations to facilitate travel, with the Royal Thai Navy also planning to offer ferry services from Thonburi district.

A very pleasant trip for Hua Hin railway enthusiasts is to take the State Railway of Thailand’s new train south and spend a couple of nights in the friendly provincial centre of Hat Yai A connecting Thai train runs to the Malaysian border crossing at Padang Besar. If Kuala Lumpur is your destination, a new train travel experience awaits you at that station. The sleek aircraft sloping front of the new Malaysian train warns that this is a new fast electric ETS that streaks along at 140 kilometres an hour to reach the capital in just over four hours from the Thai border.
Waiting at the charming timber Hua Hin railway station, mostly older train still rumble by. Many are clearly hobbling at the end of their long working lives and well past retirement age. But more often now, shiny brandnew Chinese-made trains roll in. For example, at 6.45 pm daily, a comfortable overnight sleeper slips quietly into Hua Hin. There are very reasonable fares of 750 THB for a comfortable lower bunk and 650 THB for the upstairs bunk for the 12-hour overnight trip to Hat Yai. The train is brand new, a picture of sleek shining stainless steel and aluminium. The interior is bright and more spacious and displays Chinese useful no-frill functionality. The door slides open at the mere touch of the flashing button, and convenient small TV screens overhead shows your spot on the train route and which station approaches. of the Thai rail tracks. Seats are already being folded down to become beds when the train is boarded at Hua Hin. Neat curtains hang down in the cool air-conditioning, ready for a good night’s sleep. There also seems to be more space for your luggage. Before bed, stroll along a couple of carriages to the restaurant car, where there is a brightly pleasant dining space for coffee and good hot supper. There is minimal cooking facility but a good choice of pre-packed meals that can be warmed in the microwave. No alcohol is available. Sitting on your comfortably-wide bottom bunk bed, the night countryside can send you drifting nicely to sleep.

As Hat Yai there is no early rush to get ready to leave, as your train comes to a gentle halt at around 7 am in the large provincial city that is just waking up. Take a cheap tuk-tuk to your provincial hotel to get ready to explore this bustling but easy-going town. This is a good place to stop for a couple of nights, if you are travelling further south to Malaysia.

Sales of Rooftop Solar Power to Begin
The government will end the decade-long restriction on households and commercial buildings selling power generated by their solar rooftops to state utilities in the fourth quarter of the year
Rooftop solar power to be sold Deregulation will open the door for detached houses, warehouses, factories and offices to sell their leftover capacity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat). The buying rate is being fixed at below 2.6 THB per kilowatt-hour, according to the Energy Ministry. The fossil-based power Egat sells to consumers is about four THB per kilowatt-hour. At present, private actors are allowed to sell power to Egat through auctions under the small power producer (SPP) or very small power producer (VSPP) project. Energy Minister Anantaporn Karnchanarat said the government is considering granting licences to residents and building owners. The total capacity to be allowed,
however, has yet to be finalized. The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency has been appointed to set up details and conditions for granting licenses and the process to buy back power from the residents. Policymakers need to deliberate over details because there are several types of solar rooftop and different technologies — resulting in different sizes of solar rooftop projects at different power costs — before figuring out the regulation and licensing process. The regulations are expected to be approved in October. Thailand has 2,990 megawatts of solar power installed. Some 2,960MW, as of July, is from solar farms, while an additional 130MW is from rooftops. – Bangkok Post

It’s Never ‘Par for the Course’ at Black Mountain This has been big year for Black Mountain and the Skagers have plenty of work ahead. April 20th marked the 10th anniversary, although the real celebrations will take place later in the year. There’s also been the ‘soft’ opening of the recently created additional nine holes.
Away from golfing circles, ‘Par for the Course’ means business as usual or no real changes. However everytime we visit the renowned Black Mountain Golf Course, there’s always some pleasant surprises. No matter how many awards are won or accolades are received from golfers from around the world, there remains a culture of constant improvement. Perhaps that’s why the awards and accolades keep coming.

The couple are not strangers to Black Mountain and previously stayed for five months with their two daughters before making a family life change to become residents at a course side villa and enrolling the kids at the nearby Hua Hin International School.
Ostensibly our most recent visit to Black Mountain was an introduction to Swedish husband and wife Mikael and Caroline Skager, very recent additions to the BM management team. Caroline is now a teaching professional at the course and Mikael has been appointed as Operations Manager.
The successful trial period even resulted in Mikael reducing his golfing handicap from ten to a very respectable five. His previous golfing history has included caddying on the European Tour with Johan Edfors, a longtime friend and Black Mountain ambassador; although hospitality has really been his specialist career path.

The third green, reconstructed only two years ago, has had another make-over for a fairer putting test. It’s never ‘par for the course’ for the management of Black Mountain however achieving a par round at Black Mountain is on the bucket list of the better players about to head to Hua Hin’s most recognised golf course this season.

The 5th annual Hua Hin World Cup is a two day tournament and is confirmed for the weekend of 10th/11th December at the state of the art football grounds at True Arena. This year’s main sponsor is Red Mountain Hua Hin. The event organisers would like to extend their thanks to Anthony and Chayanisa Kelly for their ongoing support. Due to the success of the previous tournaments and an increase in the number of teams/players, True Arena has been confirmed as the venue. This ultra-modern sporting facility boasts 2 full size FIFA standard grass football pitches. There have been a number of friendly games at the venue and players from countries across the world have stated that it is one of the best pitches they have ever played on. To quote a former Swedish professional, ‘If you can’t play decent football on this pitch you can’t play it anywhere’. The format has changed slightly from previous years most notably the change from 6 a side to 7 a side; therefore a squad of 11 players is perfect. Thailand was the 2015 champions and is ready to defend the title against teams including England, Sweden, Finland, France, Switzerland and Ireland. The tournament is a friendly event with sportsmanship being the key element.

PM Wants Sisaket to Retain his Boxing Title as Long as Possible
The prime minister toys with Sisaket by delivering a direct punch at the champion who narrowly ducked Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told WBC super-flyweight champion Sisaket Nakhonluang-Promotion or Visaksilp Wang-ek that he would like the boxing champion to retain his title as long as possible to make Thai people happy and to be their idol. Sisaket who successfully defended his title by a knockout against Roman Gonzales in New York last month paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at the Government House. The prime minister told Sisaket that he had been following his fight enthusiastically and had been cheering him all along. In response, the boxing champion said he didn’t want anything special but only wanted to do something for the country. He attributed his successful boxing career to his hard working and training and also to his girlfriend who has always been his inspiration. He said he would carry on with his boxing career after his marriage with his long-time girlfriend. However, he added that he would like to join the police force after retiring from boxing.
The MahaSamutr Country Club; Where Exclusive Really Means Exclusive!
To understand what the MahaSamutr Country Club will soon be offering Members, it’s worth considering the granddaddy of Bangkok’s private clubs, the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) formed in 1901.
With its vast horse track, golf course and other sports fields in the centre of the capital, it’s easily the most exclusive of all of Bangkok’s private clubs. Some of Thailand’s most rich and powerful have yet to be admitted due to the long waiting list -- it can take as many as 10 years to secure a spot. Unfortunately terms such as ‘exclusive’, ‘private’ and even ‘country club’ have become misused in many modern marketing campaigns with very grandiose but inaccurate claims often made. For example many golf clubs have taken to call themselves ‘country clubs’; however there are typically few restrictions to any visiting golfer looking to play. The model of a country club being followed at MahaSamutr has many similarities to the aforementioned RBSC. This means providing a playground where only Members and their families have the rights to enjoy a variety of sporting, social and recreational facilities. It means there is a membership quota and access to the public really is restricted. Unless you are a Member, enjoying regular activities just isn’t possible. Activities on and around the sparkling lagoon waters have already commenced on weekends but won’t be continuing this month in recognition of the Royal cremation ceremonies in Bangkok. However Loy Krathom in November promises to be a big celebration with candles floating on the waters as a memorable new start. Anyone travelling along Soi 112 can’t help but notice
the diagonal roofing façade structure of the Sports and Country Club which has now reaching its highest point. Meanwhile, the landscape areas between each Villa have started development to prepare for ownership transfer in commencing in November. In the Sports Field building is being completed prior with specialist sports floor installations and the Olympic sized undercover swimming pool has been filled and being tested, with completion expected to be in February next year. The Country Club construction work is on schedule with a July completion projected. Construction of the main Villa entrance is underway to provide a private wayin separate from the Country Club entrance. Membership numbers have now reached around 900 of the 3,000 projected capacity and around 50% of the final 80 Villas have been sold. Being able to see the
reality of the Member’s facilities and the villas on the water’s edge and surrounding the vast lagoon now provides prospective Members with a real taste of the completed development rather than impressions from an artist’s drawing. The MahaSamutr Country Club is rapidly taking shape as a unique development in Hua Hin as the only real country club outside Bangkok. We would suggest that the next time you see any development being described as ‘exclusive’, ‘private’ or ‘unique’; take the time to consider what these words really mean. Grand Final at Vana Nava Hua Hin
Asia Flow Tour 2017’s final round took place at the Vana Nava water park in Hua Hin. This was the 7th installation of the Asia Flow Tour, with the winners getting the chance to participate in the 2017 World Flowboarding Championships in Aquaworld, Cancun, Mexico. Over the months of August-September, competitors from around Asia have journeyed to their nearest contest venues and battle for top spots with the top riders from the participating venues congregating at Vana Nava on 22-23 September 2017 to earn the title of Asian FLOW Champions. The champions will then take on a bigger challenge as the will be flown to the 2017 FlowRider World Flowboarding Championships at Aqua World Cancun in Mexico.
Flowboarding is a late 20th Century alternative board sport incorporating elements of surfing, bodyboarding, skateboarding, skimboarding and wakeboarding. Flowriders ride on artificial waves or “sheet waves”. Powerful pumps project a three-inch layer of water at speeds ranging from 20 MPH to 30 MPH. The water flows up and over surfaces engineered to replicate the shape of ocean waves. Sheet waves are stationary waves, in that the wave does not move forward, and the movement is derived from water flowing over a stationary surface. Flowriders get their speed from the energy of the water flowing at them, and can perform basic to sophisticated turns and tricks within a relatively small area. Vana Nava Water Park features the ultimate in surf simulators; the Double Flow Rider provides fast moving waters on a doublewide width. There is also a team on site to guide you as you try maneuvers on Body Boards and Surf Boards.
Golf Tip October Perfect your posture
You might never hit it like tour pros do, but there’s a part of their technique you can mimic: the address position. When your body is angled properly at the start, you have the foundation for a repeating swing. It allows you to coil around a constant axis and swing the club up and down on the proper track. A good thought is that you are standing “proud” to the ball. The key to a good setup is to tilt toward the ball from your hip joints, not your waist. The difference is subtle, but bending from the waist causes the back to get rounded (Pic 1). It’s tough to make a good swing from this unathletic position. For better posture, try this, tuck your fingertips into the joints at the front of your hips, and tip your upper body forward as you push your hips and backside out behind you. Keep your shoulder blades flat, and add a little flex to your knees (above, left). You should feel athletic and relaxed. Try to re-create this hip-hinged position when you play. You’ll look like a pro, and hit it more like one. (Pic2)

2 46 Stepping out of your comfort zone and into… Southern Thai Food!
With Hua Hin being at the apex of the southern region of Thailand, you will find some great southern food to try here. Many travellers to Thailand, however, do not venture to try it, as the dishes are not as well known as those of its northern culinary cousins. We have asked Feast Thailand’s Leigh Higgins to sift through this region and share where she goes to get her Southern Thai food fix. More often than not, Southern cuisine tends to be heavier, more intensely spiced, richer and more pungent than any offerings from further north. With most of the inhabitants of the southern regions being ethnically Malay and many being Muslim, the food bears those influences. There is bread in the form of Roti, a pan-fried flat bread. It is often stuffed with a meat and vegetable curry - Roti Mataba, or accompanied by a curry sauce for dipping - Roti Gaeng. Every market all over Thailand also serves the sweeter version, sprinkled with sugar and condensed milk - Roti Nom Kon Wan; it can also have crushed banana as a filling - Roti Gluay. A personal favourite is Roti Tissue, which is a very thin, crispy style roti.
Southern Thai food is a spice sensation, though many travellers never try it, as it often looks precooked, too spicy, or they are simply not familiar with it, as their Thai restaurants at home town do not usually serve southern dishes. Southern Thai Food is the food of the Isthmus of Kra, the small finger of land bordered on both sides by tropical seas and having many islands. Thai food from this area shares much in common with Indian, Malaysian, and Indonesian cuisine, as there are often liberal amounts of coconut milk (Kathi), coconut oil (Nam Man Maphrao), fresh turmeric (Khamin), galangal (Kha) , garlic (Gratiem) , lemongrass (Takrai) and kaffir lime leaves (Bai Makrut) . Southern food is the some of the spiciest in Thailand, with little of the refinement of the Central region. Red, yellow and orange curries make generous use of coconut milk and coconut oil and are often boiled with sour pineapple and tamarind to balance the richness of the coconut milk.

Some notable dishes of the region are:• Khua Kling - a spicy dry curry of minced pork, • Gaeng Som - a sour yellow to orange curry, • Pad Sator - a spicy stir-fry featuring ‘stink beans’, • Gaeng Tai Pla - a very popular southern curry made with fish stomach, • Moo Wan - a delicious, sweet pork dish – great to offset the intense spice of other dishes
My tip for anyone choosing southern food is to balance the meal with a variety of dishes, including a soup, generally clear and mild and a sweeter dish like a Moo Wan to balance the meal; the sweetness will reduce the effect of chilli and spice in the mouth. Add fresh vegetables and a Nam Prik to add texture and freshness to the meal, then a curry or a stir fry to round it off, giving you a truly balanced southern Thai meal; and yes, plenty of plain rice. Also, try not to drink too much water when eating spicy food, as it will only make your mouth feel hotter, as it spreads the volatile oils in the mouth. Plain rice or vegetables are a better alternative, or better yet, a sweet drink will help to bring your mouth back to where it started. Alexander Eaton was appointed General Manager of the Novotel Hua Hin Cha Am Beach Resort & Spa in August 2016. At that time he stated that “my mission is to make this hotel Hua Hin’s top themed meetings and events venue as a top choice for family escapes and getaways by taking our family offerings and activities to the next level.” This also meant travel to other countries and being immersed in the hospitality industry from a very young age. He may well be the most youthful and most experienced GM in town! Study in San Francisco was leading towards a medical career, but a career in hospitality beckoned when a scholarship to head in that direction was on offer. There’s a huge inflated ‘bouncy castle’, retro arcade games and other specified ‘Kid Zones’. There’s even massage for kids. 12 56 Sweet Treats: Navigating the Maze of these Thai Delights When visiting night markets or food areas around Thailand, you will often see vendors with a myriad of colourful sweet treats on display. Common questions from international guests to Thailand are along the lines of “what are they all” or “how and what do I order”
We asked our ‘foodie on the streets’, Leigh Higgins from Feast Thailand, to strip away the veil on these Thai sweet favourites. In Thailand, sweets are a major part of the food culture. From the morning to the evening, you will find different textures, flavours and types of sweets to tempt you. Sweets are eaten for breakfast, as a snack, or anytime during the day. They are also a great way to ease the sting of chilli in the mouth, as the sugar counters the chili and the coconut milk acts as a soothing agent.
At night, you will find street vendors all across the kingdom serving up Nam Khaeng Sai – a shaved ice dessert, or Khanom Wan Ruam Mit – a dessert of mixed sweets. At these vendors, you will see a vast number of bowls with different colours, shapes and textures of sweets. For many, this is where it ends for them, as the choice looks too daunting: What are all these bits? Is it all really sweet? How do I order? How do I eat it? There are so many different sweets on offer and, contrary to what you would think, not everything is overly

sweet. Sometimes Thai sweets can be quite deceptive, as some may look sickly sweet, but are not; hence why sugar syrup is added on request. Anything that looks candied is probably sweeter than say a jelly. There are usually two types of coconut milk on offer; the slightly sweeter one is for the multi-coloured sweets and jellies, whereas the other one is slightly saltier and added to things like black sticky rice or yellow beans. This adds a different flavour balance to the sweets. Most vendors normally have three zones of sweets on display. One zone is of fruits or jellies already mixed with coconut milk. One such dish is the very popular Gluay Buad Chee – Bananas in Coconut Milk. The second zone features the thick, sticky looking concoctions like black sticky rice or yellow beans in syrup. These are quite textural dishes and are usually served with the slightly saltier coconut milk. The last zone has the vast array of bowls displaying the multi-coloured sweets; selections like black jelly, pomegranate seeds and others or candied morsels like Chinese dates, pineapple and tomatoes.
There are also other selections that are flavoured with pandanus along with things like sweetcorn kernels or jackfruit. There is so much to choose from; just ask for a little of whatever you are attracted to, as nothing is offensive to taste, with some being sweeter than others. You will usually see locals ordering their sweets to take away in bags, though the vendors will also have some small bowls and nearby tables, allowing you to sit and eat. You may be asked whether you want it served with Nam Khaeng - crushed ice, which is great on a hot night. They may also ask if you want Kathi - coconut milk and/or sugar syrup; it’s up to you, as these desserts are about personalising. If you are close to a 7/11, buy a small tub of your favourite ice cream to accompany, or just eat it as is. All selections are delicious and it’s a really inexpensive and refreshing way to eat sweets in Thailand. Eat like a local and try out the street vendors serving these sweets between Hua Hin Soi 56 & 58 on Phetkhasem Road and also on Naebherkardt Road at the corner of Soi 55/1.
