3 From the Editor In this edition of Hua Hin Today we considered community reaction to last month’s dreadful events. Instead of this being a bad news story, what we discovered was optimism and confidence. Basically normality has returned with visitors continuing to feel safe and the ‘family friendly’ reputation intact. There’s also good news about developments around town. First the fishing pier has undergone some renovations, high-speed rail is on the fast track and last but not least, pedestrian safety is on the radar, especially crossing the road outside Market Village. One of the most significant Hua Hin developments in recent times is almost ready to open the doors. Next month we will be providing our readers with an introduction to the Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, opening on 1st October. There’s reason to believe the Hua Hin shopping scene will never be the same again. Just driving past the entry may not give you a real understanding of the scope and proportions of this development - it’s huge! We’re looking forward to our sneak preview soon. Hua Hin Today is also looking forward to our future with the appointment of Visa Chimdee only increasing that confidence. Our new General Manager is a lady with the know-how to offer our readers and customers even more each month. See more about our new GM (page 26) and welcome Khun Visa!

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2016

4 Scholarships Funded For Hua Hin Students

Municipality to Launch “Senior” University The Social Welfare Division of Hua Hin Municipality is to launch a “Senior” University, where Thai and foreign senior people take part in exercise and physical therapy together to enhance psychological and physical health. “Witayalai Wai Wan” is the Thai wording for this style of university, however a direct translation would be “Sweet University”, not really what it should suggest in English.

The Mayor of Hua Hin, Mr Nopporn Wutthikul has welcomed and thanked three local business people who have offered to fund student scholarships which will recognise academic performance, advance the students’ education prospects and assist their family circumstances. The three benefactors are Mr Seung Lee Park from South Korea, Ms Enya Wang from China and a Thai national, Dr Dusit Charoen. All three are business people working and living in Hua Hin. Mr Seung and Dr Charoen said they the three had not known each other previously. After meeting they realised that they shared a vision to assist Hua Hin students. Mr Seung is a retired business man and Ms Enya owns a shop in Hua Hin. They then asked Mr Dusit to join them in this project.

Scholarships will be awarded every three months and will be valued at up to 30,000 THB. Both Dr Charoen and Mr Seung were from poor families who found it difficult to make ends meet when they were young. They needed to wear worn out school uniforms and study was difficult without electrical power at home and relying on lamps at nighttime. However they both persevered with study and found success in business after graduation. They are eager to improve the quality of life for students encountering similar difficulties. Mr Nopporn said he was pleased that local business people were concerned about the problems encountered by local students and would like to provide them with better opportunities. He thanked them for their good intentions and initiative.

A Migrating Immigration Office

Mrs. Rampha Chamlongrat, the director of the Social Welfare Division, said the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has a policy to promote quality of life amongst seniors in the city. The “Senior” University is established to offer courses and activities where the participants learn and understand each other, narrate past experiences including failure and success in life, study about legal affairs, traffic, how to take care of themselves, cooking, local traditional performances, handicrafts and Buddhist chanting. All the courses will be conducted by qualified teachers, trainers, legal experts, academics and police officers. It will encourage the participants to use free time wisely to improve themselves and their community. Doing so will make the seniors happier, and solve social problems that may

occur to or may be caused by old people. The “Senior” University will be open from September to December once a week. The theoretical study will take place at Naresdamri Meeting Room with other activities at the Ban Nong Kae Community. Around 150 participants are expected. Those interested in joining the project can complete an application with their ID and photos at the Social Welfare Division. Foreigners are also welcome. After the course, a certificate will be presented to every participant. All expenses, including meals will be met by the Hua Hin Municipality.

Cha-Am’s Biggest Annual Festival ‘Kin Hoy, Do Nok, Tok Muek’

In recent weeks, there has been a portable office alongside the main Prachuap Khiri Khan Immigration office declaring itself as “Phetchaburi Immigration”.

However residents of Phetchaburi will soon be directed to the more permanent Phetchaburi Immigration office located just south of the centre of the town of Tha Yang. We were also told that all Phetchaburi residents will be directed to this new office, albeit many will be located much closer to the Hua Hin office. If you are living north of the airport underpass, you are in the ChaAm District of Phetchaburi, not Hua Hin or Prachuap Khiri Khan. The enforcement of this requirement may not be favorably received by residents who are located just north of the border. Immigration staff were unable to provide an opening day but September is the designated opening month. Locations Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin) Turn towards the ocean (east) just north of the main Hua Hint centre down Soi 19 off Petchakasem Road. Turn right at the T junction at the end of the road; the office is

on the right hand side around 300 metres further. Please note many websites still refer to an office on Canal Road, a very outdated location. Phetchaburi (Tha Yang) Drive north towards Bangkok from ChaAm, the office will be located on the main road before an irrigation channel and before the Tha Yang town centre. Look for a PTT station on the right then the office soon after on the left. Phone: To check on the opening day contact the Call Centre 1178 or 032-526556 The Hua Hin immigration office receives great reviews for the level of service and compliance with regulations, including correctly receipted fees. Phetchaburi residents are hoping that these features will soon be carried forward to the new Tha Yang office.

It’s Cha-Am’s biggest off-season Festival and a huge celebration of local seafood; that’s the Shell Eating (or is that shell-food eating?) – Kin Hoy, Bird Watching - Do Nok and Squid Catching – Tok Muek Festival. Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Cha-Am Municipality and the Boonrawd Brewery Public Company Limited, this year’s festival will be held between 10th and 17th September. The Festival is centred at the closed-totraffic beach end of Narathip Road and the adjacent viewpoint. A giant stage will host top Thailand rock bands, comedians and dancing girls. Every night throngs of visitors can enjoy the market, feast of seafood and entertainment.

www.facebook.com/huahintodaynews HUA HIN TODAY, September 2016

You can expect to be offered a free guided tour with a chance to find out about ChaAm’s bird population. Not only local birds; when it is getting cool in the far north of Asia, it’s a time when birds visit on their migratory routes heading south. It’s unfortunate for foreign visitors that this very colourful extravaganza needs to happen at a time of the year when the squid are close to shore and the birds are migrating. That’s because it’s also a time when there are few foreign visitors in town. However largely Bangkok-based Thais always arrive in droves to guarantee a busy and successful Festival year after year.

5 Hua Hin High-speed Rail Put on Fast Track

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has sped up the construction of four high-speed railways, pushed for property development along their routes and pointed at the Bangkok-Rayong railroad as the pilot project. “Many stations along the railroads have potential to develop commercially,” he said after meeting yesterday with Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith on drawing up a plan to make use of land along the rail lines. The move is part of the government’s policy to drive the economy through investment along the East Economic Corridor.

The three other lines are BangkokNakhon Ratchasima, Bangkok-Hua Hin and Bangkok-Chiang Mai. The Transport Ministry would study the return on investment of each project and the number of stations with potential for commercial development. “We expect the study’s results within two weeks before submitting it to the premier,” he said.

Arkhom said the Transport Ministry expects to propose two high-speed railway projects – Bangkok-Rayong and Bangkok-Hua Hin – to the PPP Committee for consideration this month at the earliest or later next month. The aim is to seek participation from the private sector. For the Bangkok-Rayong commercial development project, the ministry expects to open bidding by the end of this year. In parallel, bidding on the construction and operation of the 193km Bangkok-Rayong and the 211km Bangkok-Hua Hin high-speed railway projects would be pushed to open

Hua Hin Fishing Pier Renovations

The Bangkok Fish Market Organisation, along with the Hua Hin Municipality and Klai Kangwon Royal Navy Patrol, have completed recent renovations of the Hua Hin fishing pier. The Director of the Bangkok Fish Market Organisation, Mr. Manop Kanchanaburakul, said that the Hua Hin fishing pier had been modified with a 115 million THB budget. Fishing boats and the Klai Kangwon Royal Navy Patrol boats can now be moored and marine products can be brought ashore. The new fishing pier has the same standards as many other piers, having rubber bumpers that protect boats from damage by the pier pillars, as well as an area where boat passengers can embark and disembark. On the upper level, a private company has rented an area to market marine products, so that local fishermen can sell and buy their products. The fishing pier can be another area where local fishermen can earn an income as well as local fresh markets. Responsible for supervising 18 fishing piers throughout Thailand, the Director of the

this year. The Bangkok-Rayong project was estimated at Bt95 billion and the BangkokHua Hin project at Bt152 billion. “Both railroads are waiting for the results of their environment impact assessment, expecting that they should be coming out this month before seeking approval from the Cabinet,” he said. – The Nation

New Pedestrian Overpass for Market Village

The mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul has met with officials and local people to consider the building of a pedestrian overpass in front of Hua Hin Market Village shopping mall. The General Manager of Hua Hin Market Village, Mr. Amornthep Aummeephien and the staff of the shopping mall provided information about the need and possibilities which may see the building of the new overpass.

Bangkok Fish Market Organisation said that each area had different problems, such as wastewater and trespassing. The Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered authorities to give priority to the Hua Hin fishing pier. Apart from serving as a business place for local fishermen and an area where boats can moored, the Hua Hin fishing pier will become a walking precinct in the late afternoon and evening where visitors can enjoy and admire the local lifestyle says the Hua Hin mayor Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul. It has been a request of local people that an area be provided for small fishing boats and that the beach area between the new and old fishing piers be available as a public area with lights installed. Mr. Manop said that further development will be the responsibility of public and private organisations as a cooperative public development project. However the pier currently has restricted access due to the construction of new buildings. It will be some months before benefits to the public can be realised.

The current dangers posed for pedestrians crossing the road in this location are apparent with a number of serious incidents being reported. Apart from the density of the traffic and passengers disembarking from public transport vehicles, hazards also relate to vehicles attempting to make U-turns with the uncertainty created by nearby temporary lane markings. Another hazard relates to driver behaviour at pedestrian crossings. Courteous drivers who have stopped to give way to pedestrians on the crossing have reported near misses as vehicles in other lanes do not stop or reduce their speed.

This has meant that pedestrians stepping past a stopped vehicle become vulnerable to those who do not recognise the crossing. In more recent times, traffic controllers have been deployed to avert this danger outside Market Village. This is a concern at a number of other locations on Petchakasim Road with fading road markings adding to the problem.

6 Hua Hin Welcomes a New International School Da Vinci International School (DVIS), an accredited international school, is set to become a window to the world of quality education.

The abilities of all students are supported according to the theory of multiple intelligences. Da Vinci International School will follow the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) curriculum, but school officials say the school is not just for British kids. They offer global educational skills for all expatriate kids and local Thai kids. The goal of the school is to provide students with a carefully balanced education. The mission is to prepare tomorrow’s global citizens and leaders with the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need to face, meet and succeed with the challenges of the future. Named after Leonardo da Vinci, the school aims to cover science, engineering, architecture, arts, mathematics, poetry, painting and sculpture in a new and innovative manner. DVIS takes great pride in addressing the development of the whole child, including all aspects of the skill set students need to succeed in the 21st century (intellectual, creative, physical, social, participatory, cultural and moral). The school is still under construction, but the soft opening is slated for September, 2016. The inaugural students are registered and ready to go, although there is still some availability for other students wishing to join this first semester. DVIS aims to develop students who are not only outstanding academically, but also endowed with a wider and deeper sense of social awareness, responsibility and obligation to community.

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2016

DVIS is committed to the development of an institutional culture that unites promising students, dedicated parents and guardians and professional teachers and educational managers in striving continuously for the highest standards, the best practice and performance and the soundest academic provision in a warm, caring and friendly environment. The curriculum for Nursery, Preschool and Primary classes is reinforced where appropriate with ancillary elements chosen on the basis of their suitability in view of local cultural factors. Students thus receive a blend of global and domestic education which builds on and complements their previous knowledge and their existing cultural identities.

Classroom learning will be linked to, and supported by, DVIS’ extensive extracurricular program. Extracurricular activities will address physical and recreational sectors, as well as educational ones. There are many benefits of joining an international school and obtaining an international education, including use of English as the principal medium of instruction, the ability to impart skills that refine critical thinking, and international school communities tend to be multinational. The main international language is arguably English. That Da Vinci will teach its classes in English, will afford all nationalities a strong background in English. Being a multinational school, students are exposed to a range of cultures from a young age. This often enhances their confidence and their empathy, and leads to lifelong friendships. DVIS has chosen to follow the CIE curriculum as it has distinguished itself by offering courses suitable for all young people seeking global preparation for university studies, careers and lives. Students from all over the world are welcome to apply to their school, and applications are accepted for review throughout the year. Leonardo da Vinci once famously observed “learning never exhausts the mind”, a sentiment followed by the instructors and staff at DVIS. ‘Emitte lucem et veritatem’- Sending out light and truth. 8 Thailand Post Gets Modern to Serve Facebook and Instagram Shops

Visa On Arrival Fees Doubling For Some Countries The Thailand Post service is about to move towards offering more modern services and amenities to appeal to an increasingly tech-savvy population. The postal service is investing 500 million THB on IT and new technology that will help them better serve online sellers and other modern users of their services. They realized they needed to take these steps in order to gain back business from messenger service apps like GrabBike that can deliver things quickly and cheaply and their services can be ordered from the convenience of a user’s mobile phone. They also realise that the need for such services is growing with the rise of people having at home businesses that require delivery such as Instagram and Facebook shops. With the money they are investing, Thailand

Post plans to introduce a bunch of services in the next several months. PromptPost is an app that lets people who regularly ship lots of packages, such as online sellers, pre-register and use new selfservice kiosks that cut the processing time of each package down from eight seconds to two seconds, reported Bangkok Post. They will also introduce THP Card, a prepaid card that allows people to pay quickly at post offices across the country, and, hopefully, a license from Bank of Thailand to allow e-wallet services. Thailand Post has already increased and optimised their international delivery and e-commerce services to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and China. International revenue makes up 14 percent of Thailand Post’s total sales and they hope to increase that number. Coconuts Bangkok

The Foreign Ministry said in its announcement that the decision to hike the charge for this class of visa was based on what Thai embassies and consulatesgeneral are collecting, to make the fee more comparable to what Thais pay when they travel to other countries.

World’s Best Cities for Street Food

Sidewalk vendors, push carts, holes in a wall - even in cities with rich reputations for fine dining, some of the best meals are on the streets. Places like Hong Kong have blurred the line between haute cuisine and quick comfort food, as humble dim sum diners win Michelin stars. That’s still the exception, but most chefs on the street aren’t looking for that kind of recognition. They’re cooking for crowds who pack around their stands day after day. Here are the top 10 best cities in the world for street food, from quick snacks to moveable feasts, with Bangkok taking the top honours. It’s impossible to avoid street food in Bangkok, where sidewalk vendors in different parts of the city operate on a fixed rotation.

Bangkok’s Chinatown is one of the best city districts for street food.

To create greater awareness on Thailand’s efforts to stop illegal ivory trade, the country’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has been actively campaigning for the project through several activities, including the release of a video aimed at warning travelers of the regulations and penalties in place of anyone dealing with illegal ivory or ivory products, as well as the handing out of this leaflet. 9 Bus Transport Company To Undergo Major Overhaul

The state-run Transport Company is planning a major makeover of its bus services to cut costs and to be able to compete with low-cost airlines which have increasingly attracted bus passengers. The main concept of this major overhaul is to provide services which meet the digitalage lifestyles of passengers at reasonable costs which are competitive with low-cost airlines. While low-cost airlines enable passengers to arrive at their destinations faster than buses, they lack other basic facilities such as onboard free snacks and drinks, the source pointed out, adding that the Transport Company will complement its speed disadvantage with other conveniences that are not available in low-cost airlines. Under the 4-year restructural plan, the source said that the Transport Company will rent a fleet of 400 new buses which will be equipped all kinds of conveniences to meet the modern lifestyle of consumers such as on-board wi-fi, battery recharging ports,

reclining seats with automatic massaging system. Meanwhile, safety will be enhanced with the installation of a safety system that will restrict every driver to four-hour driving at an interval. The ignition key cannot start the engine after 4-hour drive unless the bus has to stop for a while, said the source. The new modern bus will be put into service for trial in four main routes namely Bangkok-Mae Sot, Bangkok-Phuket, Bangkok-Nakhon Phanom and BangkokChiang Mai with two buses for each route initially. Besides service makeover, the bus agency plans to commercialise its prime land plots such as the Ekamai bus terminal which will be relocated to Bang Na and the land plot developed for commercial purposes. The company is not expected to perform well this year compared to last year’s due to a 30 percent drop in passengers. But it expects a rebound in revenues after a major service makeover. ThaiPBS

Passenger Vans Are Told to Leave Victory Monument

All passenger vans operating from the Victory Monument will be relocated to three bus terminals – Mor Chit, Ekamai and Sai Tai Boromratchachonni by October 25th. The new order to regulate the operations of the passenger vans was agreed upon at a meeting at the headquarters of the 2nd cavalry division led by Colonel Suvit Katesri, deputy commander of the division and chairman of the committee to regulate passenger vans. Also attending the meeting were representatives from transport Companies, Land Transport Department, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority and operators of the vans. It was agreed that passenger vans would continue to operate in their existing routes but from three separate bus terminals instead of from Victory Monument and its surrounding areas. Passengers using the services of the vans will be notified of the relocation plan through a publicity campaign to be launched in August and September. To facilitate their travel to the three terminals, there will be free shuttle bus services at Victory Monument.

Nopparat Karoonyavanich, the vicepresident of one transport company, plans to cut passenger van fees by 20 baht after its vans are relocated. The lower costs relate to the operators not having to pay expressway fees and the relocation also will result in shorter travel distances for some routes. Mr Nopparat said about 60-70% of the van relocation preparations have been completed. Van parking lots and stations including passenger waiting areas will also be provided. The firm also discussed with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority a plan to provide shuttle buses from skytrains to the bus terminals for van passengers. All facilities will be ready before the NCPO’s order comes into effect, he said. Currently passenger van services operate between Pranburi, Hua Hin and Cha-Am to the Victory monument in central Bangkok as a popular low-cost transit option between the two locations. Hua Hin Food Festival 2016

The annual Hua Hin Food Festival 2016 is taking place from 16st - 18st August. The event will showcase a wide variety of local food and international delicacies prepared by professional chefs of participating hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin. The event will highlight a wide variety of local food and international delicacies cooked by professional chefs from participating hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin and Cha-am.

To curb road accidents in Thailand, the Department of Land Transport said it will make the driver’s license test for private vehicles more difficult to pass. After the World Health Organization placed Thailand in the second spot for having the deadliest roads in the world, transport officials are now looking to improve their driver’s license testing system. The initial information that has been released is they will increase the training

session from four to five hours and the number of questions in the theory test will go from 50 to 60 questions next year. However a real omission seems to be the lack of any on-road driving test. Demonstrating driving skills on a very small ‘test track’ with an emphasis on parking may not allow for the assessment of important safety issues such as intersections, U turns and other traffic management driving skills.

There will also be shops and stalls selling tasty dishes and reasonable prices by local clubs and associations. The event will showcase professional skills from talented kitchen staff in a series of competition, including ice carving, vegetable and fruit carving, and cooking. 10 Hua Hin Police Maintaining Hua Hin as a ‘Safe Haven’

Last month Hua-Hin Today had the opportunity to meet with Police Major General Kasana Jamsawang, Commander of the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police and Colonel Sittichai Srisopacharoenrat, the Superintendent of the Hua Hin Police. Apart from gaining a greater understanding of the issues faced by police in managing any problems faced by foreigners visiting or living in Hua Hin, this was an opportunity to introduce Visa Chimdee in her new position as General Manager of our publication. As Hua Hin Today is the only English language newspaper in Hua Hin, a renewed offer was made by her to communicate important information in our newspaper from the police to foreigners either visiting or living in Hua Hin.

The police describe the level of serious crime in Hua Hin as low when compared with many other towns and cities in Thailand and for that matter worldwide. Incidents of personal theft, including ‘snatch and grab’ and minor assaults are the most common offences reported, although such incidents remain infrequent. Additionally a high rate of apprehension and resolution for victims has been achieved. In a number of Thailand locations where there are a significant number of tourists, including Phuket and Pattaya, Foreign Police Volunteers programs assist communication between the police and foreigners. Volunteers may mediate when there is a dispute involving the police or local people and provide advice and information to foreigners experiencing difficulty. Volunteers may be placed at Police Stations or patrol in areas where foreigners are prominent. The establishment of such a service is under active consideration and may become a future project for Hua Hin. Finally Pol. Col. Sittichai commented on illegal drug use and distribution. He warned that illegal drug activities, including personal use or possession is a serious matter. There already is a strict policy in place throughout Thailand which provides severe penalties to tackle drug use. The Hua Hin police are optimistic about the future of Hua Hin as a ‘safe haven’ for foreigners. The goal of achieving a ‘crime free’ status may never be realised. However with the ongoing vigilance of the police, the cooperation of the community and the common sense and goodwill of our visitors, the reality of Hua Hin maintaining high levels of safety seems assured.

12 Where International Education Is Really International

The word international may be overused to the extent that it has become a cliché. This includes references to international cuisine, international organisations and in more recent times; international education. 1,600. Additionally the MBA program offers around 160 students a focus on entrepreneurial skills offered by faculty members with both academic and industry experience. IACBE Accreditation The International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education has granted the Rama IX Campus accreditation for business and management undergraduate programs and is now working with Stamford’s Hua Hin Campus to achieve this recognition. This is a first for any Thailand university. Accreditation involves rigorous evaluation and a comprehensive peer review. Pierre Bourgoin, Assistant President of the Phetchaburi campus of Stamford International University, has described the Stamford vision to an assembled group of Bangkok and local media during their introduction to the university’s international programs on campus. Mr Bourgoin was eager to describe international education as being much more than just teaching in the English language. “It’s about the student experience, the program design as well as faculty members all being connected and interactive with the international community”, he says. Part of this opportunity relates to Stamford being connected to over 80 institutions in 29 countries as a member of the Laureate Universities network of learning institutions. Even before Stamford’s international programs in business and hospitality management were launched in July this year, 75% of student’s undertaking

undergraduate programs have chosen bilingual pathways with Mr Bourgoin noting an improving level of English proficiency from enrolling students. Other features of the international programs include seamless access to Stamford’s Bangkok campuses at Rama 9 and Asoke, student exchanges and other overseas opportunities. Being industry connected, both at home and abroad, ensures that students are ‘job ready’ in a world-wide sense. “Our follow-up shows that 95% of responding 2015 graduates are now employed in area of their field of study”, says Mr Bourgoin. Stamford Hua Hin has already attracted the interest of students from a wide range of countries including Russia, India, Bangladesh, China and Myanmar with a projected enrollment 100 students per year in the international program apart from the usual undergraduate quota of around

“IACBE is an international standard. Our graduates will be recognised when they pursue their Master’s degrees overseas. The recognition will also increase their employability,” said Dr Andrew Cowan, President of Stamford International University. Stamford’s inaugural International Night

On a lighter note, earlier in the year Stamford’s International Night was a very colorful and flavorsome evening of entertainment and cuisine presented by students in national costume. This was an evening that was as international or multinational as could ever be imagined! International education at Stamford is now being delivered with innovation, recognition of best practice and integration with the Hua Hin community. Khao Tao – Hua Hin’s Turtle Hill There is understandable confusion amongst many who get their Khao’s and Ko’s mixed up. Khao = hill or mountain, Ko (or koh) = island, Tao = turtle

In the Hua Hin area, as well as Khao Tao (Turtle Hill) there is also a tiny island called Ko Tao (Turtle Island) which can be seen from the hillside viewpoints alongside another small island called Ko Singto (Lion Island). The much bigger island of Ko Tao – the one well-known with backpackers and the diving community, is located a long way further south from Hua Hin and is closer to Chumphon and Ko Samui. Khao Tao is a charming village only 20 kilometres from Hua Hin, best known for many shrines, views over the coastal scene and a fine fresh water lake. Even if you aren’t particularly interested in temples, the hillside location of the temple complex at Wat Khao Tao provides some beautiful views over the Gulf of Thailand with Hua Hin stretching away in the distance to the north. The temple and various shrines here are a mix of Chinese

and Thai influences with small caves and hollows holding Buddha images and carvings of other important figures such as Phra Mae Thoranee (Mother Earth). If you don’t feel like tackling the steps that lead to the top of the hill, just have a rest and enjoy the sea breezes at the sala adjacent to the turtle shrine. But if you’ve made it here it would be a shame not to witness the views from the top of the hill where the giant seated Buddha image looks out to sea. There is also a standing Buddha on a lower level. Although it takes just a little bit of effort to climb the steps all the way to the top, the views are ample reward. Inland slightly is the location of the first reservoir in Thailand, a freshwater lake which was developed as a Royal Project. The Thai signs say no fishing although some seem to take little notice. A pavilion and statue of HM the King of Thailand is now under construction and will soon grace this lake; perhaps that will make a difference to obeying the fishing rules!

There are a number of beach restaurants that serve up delicious local food, seafood and drinks with sun loungers and umbrellas. As opposed to Hua Hin and Khao Takiab beaches, Had Sai Noi drops-off quickly, making it ideal for swimming. Where: You will find this idyllic location some 20 km south of Hua Hin, not too far off the main highway to Pranburi. Simply follow the signs to Khao Tao and then Sai Noi beach. The road goes around the ocean side of the reservoir and is easy to follow. Khao Tao Fabrics Just before reaching the reservoir another attraction is a Royal Project dating back to 1964. The production of handwoven cotton fabric here is a signature Prachuap Khiri Khan souvenir, although this origin is little known by foreign visitors. More information in our next edition!

13 “Unbreakable” - Hua Hin Defiant With High Visitor Numbers Business owners, hotels and attractions are reporting that visitor numbers remain high in Hua Hin as life returns to normal after the recent incidents on August 11th – 12th.

Fears that tourism would be greatly affected in Hua Hin in the wake of recent explosions have been allayed as the town remains busy with local and international tourists visiting the town’s beaches, town centre shops, as well as bars and restaurants near to the sites of the attacks. This spirit can be demonstrated by the example of the Poonsuk Road Bar, The Blue Monkey. Just a week after the incidents they staged an “Unbreakable Party”, posting this notice on their Facebook page. “We have decided to use this as an opportunity to show that we Hua Hin people are strong together and will stick together no matter what. We are UNBREAKABLE. We will be giving out shirts to everyone; it will say UNBREAKABLE on the front and HUA HIN THAILAND on the back.” People from all sections of the community gathered at the downtown clock tower near where two of the bombs exploded. They were joined by Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor Thawee, other Provincial government and community representatives and municipal Hua Hin Mayor Noppaporn. This became a lively musical event and the Mayor thanked the organisers; describing the gathering as very impressive and memorable Placards in Thai and English that told the story that Hua Hin people are strong – Keep Calm and Carry On and Hug Hua Hin were held up in English while “We are strong”, “Welcome to Hua Hin” and “Hua Hin people united together” were translations of the Thai messages. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “We are pleased that life has quickly got back to normal in Hua Hin, as it shows that people have confidence in the safety of Thailand and the increased security measures that have been put in place nationwide.” TAT is launching a “We Care” initiative, campaigning for the local communities to pull out the stops when it comes to hosting tourists and to encourage everyone working in the field of tourism to wear special White-Yellow Ribbons – symbols of the peace and unity of the nation. In addition, TAT is planning to organise a number of mega events and special tourism promotional campaigns to attract local and international visitors. The “Jazz Run Cycling Hua Hin Festival” is scheduled for the first week of September, and will comprise a jazz music festival, a food fair, a marathon, and a cycling event. Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has said that the long-term effects on these recent events are likely to be minimal as the incidents don’t seem to be terrorism related. The ministry is maintaining a target of 2.4 trillion THB of revenue from the tourism industry in 2016, compared to 2.24 trillion THB generated in 2015 when 29.8 million tourists visited the kingdom.

Meanwhile, Prachuab Khiri Khan Governor Tawee Narissirikul, chaired a meeting for a newly established prevention and protection centre. He stated after the meeting that Hua Hin district has returned to normal, with all schools to reopen.

He urged citizens and tourists to be confident in the town’s safety. Accelerating the installation of CCTV cameras around Hua Hin is on the agenda to continue to build confidence and surveliance security locally. Army Commander Gen Theerachai Nakwanich later said that his Command has adjusted its work plans for greater efficiency, while acknowledging that pursuit of those doing the bombings was the responsibility of police. He urged the public to contribute to the effort to bring those responsible to justice. Police Chief Pol. Gen. Chaktip Chaijinda traveled to Hua Hin to follow up on the investigation after he had been instructed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan to monitor the investigation closely. He also assured local people and tourists of their safety while urging them to return to their normal lives.

14 Finding Balance with Massage Therapy The Putahracsa Day Spa is a hidden gem in the heart of downtown Hua Hin

Located along soi Nahb Kaehat, the resort is divided into two sides. The first side is located on the beach side of the road, while the other side is west of the road and a bit more inland (although still only a stone’s throw from the beach). It is on the west, inland side of the road where you’ll find the Day Spa. As you approach the reception desk, the staff will guide you to the spa. Parking is available on either side of the road. On a recent visit, I opted for the 90-minute Body Balance massage (1,800 THB). The massage promised a blend of Thai and Western massage techniques with warm Thai herbal compresses to relieve body tension and promote better sleep patterns. I was greeted at the door by Khun A, my massage therapist. She offered me an orange-scented cold towel and a glass of butterfly pea flower tea. We discussed my treatment for the day, and she asked if there were any parts of my body she should avoid, or any areas she should focus on. As I had strained my left calf earlier in the day, she said the herbal compresses involved in the massage would help to alleviate the strain – and she was correct.

I was lead to a beautifully appointed room with soft lighting and gentle music playing. I removed my shoes, and Khun A washed my feet before leaving the room for me to disrobe. I donned the black mesh-like disposable underwear I was given (happy to say I don’t have any photos of that – at least not to share) and climbed onto the massage table. With my face nestled in the towel-laden head rest, I looked upon a bowl filled with fresh flowers floating in water, and immediately felt relaxed.

Khun A entered the room and the massage began. She alternated between an oil massage, and the use of hot herbal compresses on different areas of my body. Nothing felt rushed – I was completely relaxed and at ease from the start of the massage, straight through to the end. Following the treatment, I was given some ginger tea, and some dried guava to snack on. It was suggested I not shower for 2-3 hours to let the essential oils soak into my body. The Putahracsa Day Spa practices a balance of traditional theories and modern techniques to create treatments that unify the mind, body and soul. Using ancient sources of nature and natural products, the spa ensures each treatment is a sensory experience. Treatments are available in the spa, or in-room (for guests of the hotel). Many spa packages are available – too numerous to mention here. Check out their website (www.putahracsa. com) for more information. What Is Clean Food?

Healthy lifestyle trends are extremely popular. Whether it’s T25, pilates, yoga, cycling, swimming, or even the eating trend of Clean Food. More than 50% of health lovers must have heard of the expression Clean Food. “Clean Food” is the food using the least seasoning or don’t use it at all. It’s the no-processed–food that we take into our body, such as fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, brown rice, no-fried-foods, or no-grilled-foods. In a broad sense, it can be divided into 2 categories as follow: Food with no contamination: Food contamination can be caused by germs - as in well-cooked-foods, from parasite - not half-cooked; or from chemicals - no insecticide, no repeatedly heated oil used. So it’s beneficial to our body and non-toxicant. Nutritious food: food from all 5 food groups, namely proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fats. Eating a variety of nutritious foods from each of the 5 food groups in sufficient proportion. Trying to avoid food with strong flavour. And eat lots of vegetables and fruits. So what should be done before trying “Clean Food”? Refraining from tea and coffee is the first thing you should do, because tea and coffee will give your body the sweetness from sugar and other substances that are not good for your body. Trade your snacks for vegetables, fruits, and beans. Fresh vegetable and fruit juices are also acceptable. Try starting out with tasty-and-easy-to-make clean food first. Start with one meal per day, then change to more varieties and more meals per day later on. Eating “Clean Food”, along with exercising, has a lot of benefits for your body. Such benefits include being healthy and, of course, weight loss. According to the exercise rule, we should not take a heavy meal at least 1-2 hours before the exercise.

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2016

But if you have to have such a heavy meal, then you need to wait around 2-3 hours before the exercise. However if you have heavy meal after exercise, there is a higher chance for you to gain weight. It is best for you to exercise in the morning because you haven’t eat yet. Also, because morning exercise accelerates your metabolism. But one thing you should never forget is drinking clean water after the exercise, or mineral water to make up with those minerals lost with sweat. Eating “Clean Food” is a pleasurable thing, it means we are taking case of our health more by being more careful about what we put in our mouth.

16 Electric Car May Be on Thai Market This Year Locally assembled four-seater electric vehicles (EV) by FOMM Corporation are expected to hit the Thai market at the end of the year with a price-tag of 300,000 THB. Because of this, the Department of Land Transport is amending current laws to allow compact EV vehicles with engine power of below 15 kilowatts to be registered. According to The Department of Industrial Promotion’s Industrial Development Director Pitoon Pholpanichrasmee, compact EV vehicles will be available for use in Thailand by the end of the year or early next year. He has been quoted as saying that the battery cloud system of EV vehicles still needs to be further developed for faster charging. According to Pitoon, the present allocated time of 6 - 8 hours needs to be compressed into half an hour. An agreement between Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology of Thammasat University (SIIT) and FOMM Corporation, the Japanese electric car manufacturer, was signed yesterday to conduct a one-year joint research on compact EV vehicles, reported The Nation.

FOMM has also signed another memorandum with Bangchak Petroleum to conduct research on their battery cloud system. This will also allow them to utilize Bangchak service station. The purpose of these collaboration is to improve the future of EV vehicles. According to Pitoon, most car companies are awaiting Thai government policy on import tax before importing any vehicles onto the market. This is done to ensure prices on them remain affordable. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) pilot project to run 200 EV buses at the end of the year will be brought up at a committee hearing to determine the electricity charging rates for these vehicles, reported Agreements signed for more EV stations by next year A memorandum of understanding has been established by Energy Minister General Anantaporn Kanchanarat at a PTT station in Nonthaburi province. This is in conjunction with six car companies; BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porches, and Volvo.

Five Advantages of Turbo Engines You Might Not Know One of the current trends in automotive technology is the utilisation of smaller displacement engines enhanced to produce power and torque levels on par with larger displacement engines.

This is commonly dubbed “engine downsizing” which has long been the norm in Europe and USA, but only just became popular in Thailand. Engine downsizing offer solutions to both rising fuel prices and improving tailpipe emissions both also satisfying environmentally conscious consumers.

Therefore, a turbocharged engine is more efficient in getting more air into the engine more quickly due to this higher and continuous compression. Placing more air-fuel mixture in to the combustion chambers result in more energetic combustion – essentially a more powerful and efficient combustion is produced. Thus more power is gained using less fuel which result in cleaner, lower emissions for better environmental care. Here are 5 advantages of a turbo that that you may like to consider: 1. Engine tenability to suit varying driving styles Apart from selecting the most suitable engine for a particular model, turbo enhancement opens up a much wider range of application to suit different kinds of driving. The key is the wide range of turbo boost pressure that can be

The memorandum of understanding is relates to two Electric Vehicle stations to be built this year and an additional 14 EV stations by next year, raising total EV stations to 20. Thai PBS

Rejecting Road Rage

We’ve all been there – traffic jams, inconsiderate drivers, even driving in bad weather… traveling in a variety of road and congestion situations can make you feel stressed. Knowing how to handle these situations is important to managing your stress levels and helps ensure you arrive safely at your destination. Getting emotionally worked up rarely leaves us feeling any better off – it just passes on the frustration to another driver and spreads the road rage. Instead, consider having a game plan before you even get into your car, and know what you have to do to help avoid frustration once you’re in the thick of things.

In the last past few years, many European car brands have introduced such technologies to the Thai market but due to their novelty, the vehicle prices are still beyond the reach of most consumers, but that is changing. The turbo comprises primarily of two major components: the turbine and the compressor. Both are shaped like a turbine (think windmill) and both are linked to a common connecting axle and, of course, spin together. The turbine is propelled by the exhaust gas from the engine’s combustion chambers which, in non-turbo engines, would otherwise be expelled through the exhaust tailpipe. At the same time, the compressor side of the turbo compresses the air that goes into the combustion chambers with much higher efficiency than non-turbo or normally aspirate engine can.

The Ministry expects to see 1.2 million electric vehicles running on streets in the country within the next 20 years or by 2036.

Before You Drive

1. Allow Time for Delays This may seem like a no-brainer, but failing to give yourself a bit of breathing room when traveling to work or social engagements can create unnecessary stress, so allow time for unexpected delays. If you do get stuck in traffic find alternative, less crowded routes – less traffic makes for a less stressful drive. manipulated or tuned by the engineers. Turbo tuning can help with increased agility in city driving, better acceleration and fuel economy. At the same time, it can enhance engine performance and more responsive highway driving.

2. Get some rest Driving while tired can be stressful – and dangerous. Getting a good night’s sleep before hitting the road is a good step towards staying calm and in charge on the road. It’s just as important to rest regularly along the way of your trip.

2. Enhanced engine performance A turbo can more efficiently increase air intake into the engine thereby improving air-fuel mixture and combustion without the need to increase engine displacement. A properly engineered turbocharged engine with relative small displacement can offer more performance than a non-turbocharged engine of much larger displacement.

3. Sound mind, sound ride Make your vehicle a setting that reminds you of one of the reasons why it’s awesome to drive – playing and hearing what you want. The right playlist or the right talk radio station can help fend off stress and frustration in a traffic jam. At a reasonable volume, this can help make the drive more pleasant and help you stay calm.

3. Saves fuel When a car manufacturer decide to use smaller engine with turbo technology to replace larger non-turbo engines, the performance requirement must remain on par or better to offer drivers drivability in every day driving. Since we know a turbo significantly improve efficiency of an engine, it also results in more efficient use of fuel. Simply put, a properly engineered turbocharged vehicle offer enhanced driving performance while saving fuel at the same time compared to a comparably powered non-turbo vehicle.

4. Decide your driving style Make a conscious decision before you get underway about your style of driving; it’s always your choice. Perhaps decide in advance that you will allow those we are anxiously trying to move into your lane to do so, rather than becoming competitive. It will cost you almost no time and it feels good when you receive a friendly wave rather than feeling stressed when others are not courteous.

4. More environmentally friendly Not only does a turbo help improve performance, it also help to reduce emissions by enhancing the efficiency of the combustion process. By harnessing the energy of the exhaust gas to propel the turbine which in turn drives the compressor squeezing huge amount of air to mix with fuel produce a more compressed air-fuel mixture which enables a higher energy and efficiency combustion every time resulting in more power and cleaner exhaust. A cleaner exhaust means less harmful emissions of Carbon Dioxide (Co2), meaning better care for the environment. 5. More fun to drive and increased reliability In the past, turbo was used to exploit as much power as possible in racing application or high-performance sports car. However, modern turbo application in everyday car is focused on offering drivers drivability by taking advantage of increased torque and acceleration. This means that modern everyday car with turbo can be more fun to drive.

As You’re Driving

4. Drive smoothly If burning fuel (and your money) is stressing you out as you sit idle in traffic, remember that smooth driving can help decrease fuel consumption. There’s no reason to rush five metres forward only to stop again. Accelerate and brake smoothly to in stop-start traffic help make your tank go further. 5. Give yourself some space Tailgating is angerous for everyone involved and a recipe for potential accidents – keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one ahead. If you find yourself being tailgated, you might want to find a safe space to pull over and let the driver pass. Bad drivers are not worth your precious energy! 6. Drive and Let Drive Don’t honk or stare, or use rude hand gestures. Take a few deep breaths. Though you can’t control traffic or other drivers, you can control your own behavior. Getting into a conflict is ultimately self-defeating, as it will not get you out of the traffic faster.

There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920′s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, “The Rite Spot”. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, today is the perfect day to celebrate your childhood friend!

On this day at Ba Đình Square, Ho Chi Minh, leader of the communist Viet Minh organization, declared Vietnam’s independence under the new name of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN) in a speech that invoked the United States Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution’s Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Peanuts are a good source of niacin, folate, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium and phosphorus. They also are naturally free of trans-fats and sodium, and contain about 25% protein (a higher proportion than in any true nut). Crack open some peanuts and enjoy.

September 14th – Cream Filled Donut Day

This day recognises one of our favorite foods. Whether you enjoy a vanilla filled, chocolate filled or many of the other varieties, cream filled donuts offer many ways to satisfy your sweet tooth. So go out and enjoy a Cream Filled Donut or make some of your own.

You may not have time to make a pancake breakfast but that is okay, pancakes make a great dinner as well. Pancakes can actually be served at any time and with a variety of toppings or fillings some of which are jam, fruit, syrup, chocolate chips or meat.

September 28th – Good Neighbour Day

The Grito de Dolores (“Cry of Dolores”) was uttered from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato in Mexico, on September 16, 1810. It is the event that marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. The “grito” was the pronunciamiento of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest. Since October 1825, the anniversary of the event is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day.

Good neighbours often become friends, they watch out for each other, lend a helping hand and are there for advice when asked. Neighbours are there when we need to borrow something, to get our mail for us when we are away, to watch our homes and sometimes to watch our children and our pets as well as the many other things we do with our neighbors. To celebrate, do something nice for your neighbour today.

At around eleven in the evening, the President of Mexico rings the bell of the National Palace in Mexico City. After the ringing of the bell, he repeats a shout of patriotism (a Grito Mexicano) based upon the “Grito de Dolores”, with the names of the important heroes of the Mexican War of Independence, ending with the threefold shout of ¡Viva México!

This day was created to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of a good neighbor. It is a blessing to have a good neighbor but it is even a greater thing to BE a good neighbor.

21 Looking After Your Eyesight Keep The World Looking Beautiful

Failing eyesight can seriously impair our quality of life. Without good vision we struggle to read, drive, recognize faces or see colour – many of the things that give us our freedom and pleasure. There are several causes of vision impairment in adults with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Cataracts mainly affecting the over 60s, and diabetes being the leading cause among working-age adults. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in the US for those aged 60 or older with as many as 11 million people suffering from some form of it. The scary thing is that this number is expected to rise to nearly 22 million by 2050! The disease causes irreversible destruction of the centre of the eye’s retina causing a loss of the refined vision required for many of our day-to-day activities. Cataracts, another extremely common form of impaired vision, causes blurring and affects the ability to see

colors correctly. Unhealthy lifestyle choices like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and poor diet leading to diabetes all contribute to cataract formation. The good news is that, by adding certain nutrients to our diets every day, we can preserve or improve our vision and stave off AMD. A diet rich in Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids will help protect from these irreversible conditions. Furthermore, by adding these healthy foods to our diets, and cutting out unhealthy eating habits we can maintain a healthy weight, making us less likely to get obesity-related type 2 diabetes. Get Enough Sleep A lack of shuteye can be dangerous for

When Should You Eat?

Go big on breakfast, roll with later hunger pangs. An ideal eating schedule does not exist, but for those who want to optimise their metabolism and cardiovascular system, there are guidelines. People are tied to their internal clocks more so than previously thought. Sunlight and darkness not only impact a person’s sleep cycle, but they also regulate metabolic hormones. This changes the way a person’s body responds to food.

Following a pure metabolically based approach, the largest meals should be enjoyed in the morning and at noon. Dinner ought to be the smallest meal of the day. This way of eating would take advantage of the metabolism’s efficiency. However, many workers have developed a different rhythm because they cannot prepare large meals for themselves during work. “For many people it is normal to have the big meal after work in the evenings,” Hauner says. “It would not make any sense to ban dinner. An eating pattern like that would not last.” Nutritionist Silke Lichtenstein also discourages radical approaches to food: “Someone who imposes a strict food ban after 6pm will start eating in advance at 5pm to make sure they are not hungry later.” “That would make no sense,” Lichtenstein says. Most experts agree that snacking can be a problem. “We’re getting to the point where people are eating eight to 10 times a day,” says Pfeiffer. “By constantly

Exercise Your Eyes We all know the importance of exercising bodies, but our eyes can benefit from a workout too! Improve your eye focus and strengthen your eye muscles with simple eye exercises. Improve Your Air Quality Studies have proven that poor air quality, smog and pollution can have a big impact on our eye health. Aim to offset the negative effects of our cities’ poor quality air by investing in a good air filter for your home and adding Himalayan Pink Salt Lamps to the rooms you use frequently.

What about Supplements? While supplements are useful for filling in gaps in your diet, and can help you top up if you are running low in a particular vitamin or mineral, in the long term there is no substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. Before deciding if you want to supplement or not, read what the US National Institute for Health has to say about supplements. In addition to practical steps like those outlined above, the best way to ensure good eye health (and overall health) is to eat a whole foods diet – rich in plant based food and healthy fats. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, more is more – so make sure to consume all the colours of the rainbow!

“A meal eaten in the morning will be metabolised faster than in the evening, regardless of the meal,” says Andreas Pfeiffer, a top German endocrinologist. “A healthy breakfast is basically good,” agrees Hans Hauner, a top nutritional doctor. “However, it is debatable whether breakfast must be the largest meal of the day. A person should take into account preference and individual eating patterns.”

your eyesight. In order to fully rejuvenate itself, the eye needs at least five hours of sleep every night. If your eyes don’t get sufficient rest, you could face side effects like eye spasms, dry eye and burst blood vessels.

Staring At The Screen For many, staring at a computer screen all day long is how we making a living. This, along with our smartphone addiction and love of Netflix, leads to additional strain on our eyesight. Studies indicate that up to 90% of people who work at a computer screen suffer from some form of eye problems. To lessen the negative effects on your eyes, make sure there is no glare on your screen when watching television or using your laptop, and follow the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes take 20 seconds to focus on something 20 feet away.

Police

supplying our body with food, the energy resources stored in our cells are not being consumed.” Studies have also shown that eating frequently, even if the amounts are smaller, results in an intake of more calories than the daily recommended amount. Incorrigible nibblers should at least take care to avoid eating anything after dinner, the nutritionists advise. The human body never evolved to cope with frequent servings or regular meals. Strict daily mealtimes are more of a cultural development. “Hunger phases are quite healthy as long as they do not cause malnutrition,” Pfeiffer says. “Alternating between hunger and eating phases will support metabolic flexibility, which has a long-term positive impact on health.” “We should reject the idea that hunger needs to be satisfied immediately,” Lichtenstein adds. Instead of snacking on something unhealthy, people should think about enduring the hunger until they can treat themselves to something healthy and nutritious.

22 Kui Buri National Park – Thailand’s Elephant Central Kui Buri national park is without a question the best place in Thailand to see elephants in the wild, making it a great wildlife safari destination. Besides around 320 elephants, you have a reasonable chance to see the world’s largest wild cattle species, the Gaur. These impressive bovines occur in large herds in the park. The national park is home to one of biggest population of gaurs in entire Thailand with estimated around 100 individuals. Established in 1999 Kui Buri National Park is located in the Tenasserim Hills in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, next to one of the largest national parks of the country, Kaeng Krachan. The forests consists of dry and moist evergreen forests with trees such as Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, Hopea odorata, Terminalia chebula and different species of palms. The habitat provides for other animals like the tiger, deer, porcupine, monkey, wild boar and an incredible number of bird species. Some of the common birds that can be found in Kui Buri are crested fireback, indian roller, asian openbill. Visitors who wish to only see wildlife over a day trip are advised to head directly to a substation called Huai Leuk, it is quite far north from the visitor centre. There are also clear signs from the visitor centre all the way to the wildlife watching area. Once in Huai Leuk a safari vehicle must be arranged as private vehicles won’t be allowed to pass beyond the substation. The wildlife watching areas are open from 2pm until sunset but it is recommended to visit the area on the late afternoon as there won’t be many animals around on the earlier hours.

Both parks are rich in flora and fauna These days the local people have cooperated with the park rangers in monitoring the wild elephants and to take them back to the forest without harming them. In this way, the local people can benefit from tourism and the elephants have a chance to survive in this park. How to Get There Along Phetchakasem Road, at the Km. 290 or 3 kilometres past the Kui Buri District Office, turn right into Highway No. 3217, passing Ban Yang Chum into the Yang Chum Reservoir Project. This is around 60 kilometers south of Hua Hin. Turn left before reaching the project and go along the path to the Yan Sue Village until the end of the path. Turn left for 2 kilometres to the Office of the National Park. (The distance from Kui Buri to the Office of the National Park is 35 kilometres). Wild elephants in Thailand Wild elephants in Thailand are very difficult to count given their dense, forested habitat, but most experts would agree there are between 2,000-3,000.

However this coincided with a rapid rise in tourism, which provided employment for many elephants. Today, probably more than half of Thai elephants work in tourism.

Thailand’s current population of domesticated elephants is about 2,700. This is a serious decline from about 100,000 domesticated elephants in 1850, with numbers now stable.

Disturbingly, some overseas animal rights groups have argued that tourists should not visit elephant camps, claiming it promotes cruelty.

Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are fully protected as an endangered species. In 1989 the Thai government banned all logging in protected areas, effectively protecting the remaining natural forests. While undoubtedly a very wise choice, one unfortunate side effect was that it threw many logging elephants out of work.

In fact, most Thai elephants are very well cared for, the value of the elephant is only one of the reasons, being simply too valuable to abuse. (A young calf or a healthy, young breeding female is worth as much as 700,000 THB or US$22,000.) Although the camp to be visited should be carefully selected, the kindest thing that ethical, elephant-loving tourists can

Without work in tourism, elephant owners will have no means to care for their animals. The use of the term ‘domesticated’ elephants, although it is the most common description, is a bit confusing because it can be misinterpreted to imply that (like domesticated dogs, cats, horses, water buffalo, etc.) these captive elephants are a different strain from wild elephants. Nowhere in Asia has the elephant ever been selectively bred, the process required to bring rapid genetic change to wild species. Both behaviorally and genetically, domesticated elephants are captive wild elephants, virtually the same as their wild cousins.

23 On August 2nd, over 40 Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin members and guests attended Swiss National Day celebrations at the Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa as a more festive alternative to the usual weekly Rotary meeting

This is a club tradition with the club having special Swiss connections. Many members, including President Gianni Battistini and Past President (and event coordinator) Paul Grab are Swiss nationals. There is also a special relationship between Thailand and Switzerland which includes many royal connections. Before becoming the present King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej lived as a student on Lake Geneva. In 1950 he returned to Thailand having spent 17 of the 23 years of his life in Switzerland. His Majesty holds a degree in law and political science from the University of Lausanne. VIP guest was His Excellency the Swiss Ambassador to Thailand, Ivo Sieber. After being the Ambassador of Switzerland to the Philippines, on 27th November 2015,

he had the distinguished honor to present his Letters of Credence to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. August 1st is really the Swiss National Day, but understandably attending celebrations in Bangkok was a necessary priority for the Ambassador. His attendance in Hua Hin the following day, which he described as “Thailand’s second city”, was more than acceptable and appreciated by an assembled capacity crowd at the Marriott Paksa Sawan Ballroom. The Swiss national colours of red & white were on display with the guests wearing their own carefully chosen personal selection. Had it not been for the far better behaviour, the scene could have been mistaken for a gathering of celebrating football supporters; maybe Manchester United for Premier League fans or Sydney Swans for AFL followers! 26 Khun Visa - From Founder

to General Manager @ Hua Hin Today Deciding to move from Pattaya to Hua Hin has been a welcome return to the newspaper world and to the origins of Hua Hin Today for Visa Chimdee. In August Visa was appointed to the position of newspaper General Manager. Khun Visa was a successful executive in the hotel/ hospitality business for many years. She moved to Pattaya City in 1997 where she established a successful travel business company called Karesell Tours. Her business acumen and hard work was recognised by peers and she soon became a business partner in the launching of an English language newspaper called Pattaya Today. Seven years later the newspaper was a resounding success but sadly at that time Visa’s partner passed away. In order to spend more time with her young son, she sold the newspaper business. A few years later she was introduced to the chemical industry through friends who invited her to join their business. Initially the company distributed products on Thailand’s eastern seaboard. Visa Chimdee was a founder of the Hua Hin Today newspaper. George Mastronikolis was a friend from his time in Pattaya who asked her for help to commence Hua Hin Today in 2003. At that time there was no English language newspaper in Hua Hin. In the early years of founding of the newspaper she made many trips between Hua Hin and Pattaya, especially in the first year until the newspaper could stand on its own. Since then Hua Hin Today has grown with spectacular success and is now 13 years old. “I am very happy to be back in the newspaper business especially with Hua Hin Today as I was the founder. I look forward to not only working within a well known newspaper company, but also working alongside colleagues with the same ambitions and determination to see the business grow further”. Hua Hin Today Donates to Myanmar Border Village It was a long awaited trip to visit the village of Baan Wang Takeian on the border with Myanmar in Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, only 15 km from Prachuab Khiri Khan City.

The Head of the village was waiting for us on the main road. The road was in very good condition and accessible by car. When we arrived at the village, a pleasant surprise was waiting. In a small white central building with a few houses around, a small group of kids was singing a Christian song as we entered. To our surprise this building is a Christian church. Unlike more familiar churches, this was just an open room with a white cross at the back and a table. The Head of the village is also a priest who read something in a strange language from a very old bible. This village is a small Christian community, with more than 90% of the 150 residents being Christians, most of them dressed in traditional clothing. They are 30 families in total, with the oldest person a 95 years old man, with his face showing the suffering of a hard life and the youngest just one 1 year old. The history of this village goes back to a time after the finish of civil wars in the area between different factions of rebels from Burma and the army. A few families escaped the violence and moved to the Thai side of the mountains. The government of the time helped them, offering a small piece of land to live. The land is 5 Rai next to the river with very good soil to rebuild their lives. At that time there were only 6 families, in the years to come the number has grown thanks to the generosity of Thai authorities. However this small community is now facing many issues to survive. None of the residents have ID cards or any kind of identification so they cannot leave the area, cannot own anything significant or even drive a motor bike. They must stay there, with the men working at local farms when work is available. The villagers lack the basic essentials, with water as the main problem. They collect rainwater and have only an open well as their HUA HIN TODAY, September 2016

source of drinking water. There is a limited electricity supply with small paths inside the village becoming muddy after rain when they must walk in the mud. They need help from us; any help. But when asked about their first priority, they said that 30 plastic chairs are needed for the church so that believers can pray to God. Hua Hin Today has delivered some of their basic needs such as clothes, shoes, tooth brushes and toothpaste, school equipment, rice, sugar and toys for the kids as they really have nothing.

Thailand Property Growth in 2016

Several property firms are predicting that Thailand’s real estate market will see growth of around five to ten percent in 2016 Greater Bangkok expected to lead the charge, reports The Nation. The government’s investment in infrastructure projects across the country is just one reason for the positive outlook this year. “When the government starts to invest in infrastructure projects, that will open up new land for property firms to develop residential projects,” said Thongma Vijitpongpun, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pruksa Real Estate.

“This will challenge property firms to invest in the new locations following the new mass-transit route from Bangkok to the suburbs and nearby provinces.” The Nation noted that infrastructure projects either under construction or scheduled to begin construction soon include railway double-tracking, motorways, and ten new mass-transit routes. The goal is to make Thailand a regional transport hub and this in turn will boost demand to buy homes in the

country as foreign companies see Thailand as a gateway to other Asean countries, noted Thongma. He added: “We believe that Thailand’s property market will show average growth of five to ten percent a year from 2016 to 2020. We will launch more new residential projects nationwide to serve strong demand in the market, especially in locations close to the mass-transit system.” Tritecha Thanmatithum, Supalai Deputy Managing Director, agrees with this sentiment and noted that the government measures to cut transfer and mortgage fees

will also help improve the property market this year. He said that the company plans to launch up to 29 residential projects in 2016. Of these, 20 will be low-rise developments such as detached houses and townhouses, while the rest will be condominiums. Chanond Ruangkritya, President and CEO of Ananda Development, also believes that the property market in Thailand will see growth and the developer is making plans accordingly. It expects to launch ten residential projects in 2016, of which eight will be condominiums and the other two detached housing projects. Photo: Youtube

32 4 The Art of Personalising Your Home

Artwork can add a personalised finishing touch to any room. Properly displayed and tasteful artwork can instantly bring life to an otherwise dull room by displaying fine paintings, prints, or photographs, or more casual, affordable pieces. However don’t match a frame to the room’s décor too much; let it stand on its own. Frames should also complement the era of the artwork.

How to Display It How you display the artwork on the walls can make a big difference. “Too many people hang art randomly, like they’re throwing stuff at a dartboard,” says one designer. “ The size of the work usually determines the decision about solo or in a grouping. A large piece can stand alone; smaller works may look visually stronger if grouped, particularly if they reflect a similar style, subject matter, or frame.

What to Display

Go big; one enlarged photo offers a huge wow. By making the wall the star, you don’t necessarily need many other elements to complete it. First lay out a grouping on the floor to form a composition. When mounting, spaces of 4 to 5 inches between works, use a measuring tape and level for accuracy.

Mirror, mirror on the walls. They offer great feng shui and bring in light and space. You can never have too many. On a stairway, this can offer reflected views as you climb to the next level. Forget the notion that art has to have a fancy pedigree or exorbitant costs. Anything a home owner loves is suitable, from a museum-quality painting to a child’s drawings. Here are some other suggestions for what to display.

How high, low, or close together? The size of the works, height of furniture, and ceiling height need to be considered. A good guideline is to have the centre of a work or the centre of the grouping at eye level.

The power of black and white, for example using black and white photographs, which can be framed in inexpensive frames.

Choosing the Proper Frame The style, width, material, and colour of picture frames are personal choices, frame works in a grouping that has the same or similar motifs or maybe a series in the same colour range.

Looming Tax Set to Spur Homebuilding Demand in Second Half The homebuilding market is expected to recover in the second half as the looming land and buildings tax helps stimulate demand before coming into force next year.

Economic sentiment is also improving thanks to the launch of megaprojects and low interest rates and oil prices, said Pichit Arunepunlop, president of the Home Builder Association (HBA). According to Mr Pichit, the land and buildings tax would prompt those who purchased land for self-building to kick off construction in the second half to avoid seeing their plots taxed under the new act. The cabinet approved the long-awaited tax in June, which is designed to expand the national taxpayer base. The bill, which takes effect next year, sets ceiling rates of 0.2% of the appraisal value for land used for agricultural purposes, 0.5% for residences, 2% for commercial use and 5% for vacant or undeveloped land. The tax will be levied on primary homes and land used for agricultural purposes with appraisal prices starting at 50 million THB. The rate will be applied to the amount exceeding 50 million THB. Owners of primary homes and farms with an appraisal price below 50 million THB will be exempt from the tax. The tax will also apply to second homes on a progressive basis, with rates of 0.03% to 0.30% for homes whose appraisal values range anywhere from under 5 million THB to over 100 million. For vacant or undeveloped land, the tax rate will be imposed at 1% for 1-3 years, 2% for 4-6 years and 3% for more than seven years.

WEB DESIGN GRAPHIC DESIGN

“The act will compel not only those who have delayed their decision to self-build, but also those who own land for selling purposes. This will help boost the quantity of land supply on the market,” said Mr Pichit. At the same time, purchasing power for people in the agricultural sector should pick up as the drought-related conditions have alleviated, he added.

Low interest rates and oil prices would further help offset home construction costs. The HBA expects the value of the homebuilding market to total 7.2 billion THB in the second half, up from 6 billion in the same period last year. In the first half, it totalled 4.8 billion THB, up from 3.5 billion in the same period last year.

DESIGNHUAHI N@GMAIL.COM 095-531-5281

In a move to boost demand in the second half, the HBA held the Home Builder Expo 2016 from Aug 18-21 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, which is projected to generate 3.2 billion THB. “The self-built home market represents real demand where [the land buyer] is well prepared before making a decision,” Mr Pichit added. 6 34 Thailand Currency Considerations

If you have relocated to Thailand and your daily needs are funded in baht, then you are fine as long as the baht’s purchasing power is not significantly diminished against other major currencies or trading partners of Thailand. However, if your lifestyle centres around your base currency, then you will need to measure your capital gains or losses in your base currency. What happened to Thailand during the Asian Financial Crisis? When Thailand’s economy slowed down and the kingdom needed to lower interest rates to stimulate its economy, foreign funds were withdrawn in search of better returns, also known as capital outflows. When capital pulls out, they are typically pulled from the share market, property market and loans (which are lent to Thai businesses). This caused a severe shock to Thai businesses as funds became scarce. Businesses dependent on foreign lending started to suffer, as their access to capital became restricted. As funds left Thailand, interest rates began to rise. The Thai government needed to use reserves to prop up the Thai baht by selling USD to buy baht, supporting its value. This used up large amounts of foreign reserves (typically US dollars) that were pitted against hedge funds, which ended up gifting the hedge funds tens of billions of dollars in a hopeless defence of the Thai baht, which saw it devalue. When the Thai baht depreciated, more Thai businesses went bankrupt as they held large debt, which were in US dollars. What is different in Thailand today? As a result of learning from the painful experience of pegging the exchange rate in 1997, the exchange rate is now allowed to float freely. This prevents price and value distortion from building up. When the baht is freely floated, there is little price distortion, as the traded exchange rate reflects the market value more closely. Thailand’s debt-to-GDP ratio is below 50 percent, nowhere near dangerous. The kingdom’s foreign reserves can more

than pay off its government’s external debt if it wants to as it has US$160 billion in reserves, while approximately US$130 billion in external debt. At present, Thailand’s foreign reserves are one of Asia’s largest at around US$160 billion. The Thai government has a strong foreign exchange reserve position, which is one of the highest among developing economies. It is continuing to run a trade surplus, accumulating foreign exchange reserves. Due to the free float of currency exchange, it is able to set its own interest rate more effectively. At a time when the Thai economy is starting to see signs of a slowdown, and the US economy and US dollar are showing signs of strength, instead of raising the interest rate to prevent funds outflow and maintain the exchange rate, it surprisingly lowered and kept interest rates at 1.5 percent to continue to keep borrowing costs low for Thai businesses. Doing so weakens the Thai baht and creates some capital outflow, which Thailand is able to withstand while it stimulates the economy and further increases export competitiveness. A country’s currency is very dependent on the strength of its financial system. Some ways to measure a currency’s susceptibility to being attacked by speculators include monitoring government absolute debt, debt to GDP, foreign currency reserves, inflation, elevated stock market and property prices, and a distorted market (i.e. pegged interest rates; pegged currency exchanges, etc.). Thailand has a high foreign reserve and a manageable budget deficit of 2.5 percent (most countries run budget deficits. It has run trade surpluses for most of the last 10 years. For a developing economy such as Thailand, less than 50 percent government debt-to-GDP is considered low. The external debt is also manageable. Thailand’s household debt rose to 71.6 percent in Q1 2016, but this is nonetheless still

manageable. The house price index is also high, which is expected during prolonged periods of economic growth. Capital inflow in 2016 has not been strong, and we can only surmise that it may be neutral or negative. If there is capital outflow, this shows that the Thai economy is weathering the outflow of capital well without shocks to its economy. Of course, there are many factors to consider as to whether a currency will remain strong or weak, such as politics, social factors, technological innovation, environmental factors and laws. All these affect currency values, especially political events. Tips to Lay Ceramic Tiles

Some essentials to look at before your tile laying DIY project gets underway; provided by Boonthavorn, ceramics and DIY specialists. Ceramic tiles are highly favored in many houses thanks to unique characteristics, high quality and modern design. Tiles are durable, appropriate to use inside and outside buildings, easy to buy with reasonable prices and not too difficult to lay or remove. Apart from selecting ceramic tiles that appeal to you the most, another equally important thing is laying them correctly. It may seem easy, but laid incorrectly future problems are likely. Consider these suggestions before you get started; however there are many more issues to be considered. For example: The need for a stable, clean, level/even and uncontaminated sub-floor. Consider the ‘squareness’ of the area, the centre of the rooms and the lines you will need to follow. Grouting and grout sealer. Finishing trims and the management of transitions between different types of flooring. Consider the need for equipment such as trowels to spread the tile fixing product, tile cutting equipment, mixing tools and containers, gloves and safety glasses. Check whether all the tiles are the same colour and size. Don’t accept any different colours or sizes; contact the supplier immediately if there are differences. It is recommended that information about the tiles is kept for additional tiles to be purchased.

Lay ceramic tiles according to the arrow points or the logo appearing at their back. Leave at least a 2-3 mm. gap between each tile for a grout line between tiles. Tile lines must be symmetric.

Porcelain tiles absorb less than 0.5% water, so you do not have to leave them in water, regardless of the type of cement you are using to lay the tiles.

To help you align the laid tiles easily and quickly, we recommend a spacer for tile alignment designed to be used with any types of tiles.

Random Pattern Tiles are tiles with various patterns on the surface. This is so they appear as natural as possible. Random pattern tiles may have different patterns or different patterns and colours

For granite type tiles, do not use any colour markers to write on the tile surface during the laying as some marks may remain and cannot be erased later.

You do not have to separate the colours or arrange the pattern of the tiles after unpacking. All you need to do is lay them the way you want.

For Granite type tiles, always wipe out wax off the surface. Normally, these tiles are waxed. After laying them, use a recommended product from the supplier to remove the wax and to enhance their beauty and durability.

Tips for Taking Care of Tiles Use water or only a little cleaning solution with water to clean tiles. Do not leave cleaning solution on the tiles for a long time because it will leave a stain on the tiles. Do not use cleaning solutions containing hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid or hydrofluoric acid to clean tiles. Never use the chemical substance of isopropyl (alcoholbased) to clean tiles. Do not use any cleaning equipment with rough and sharp surface to clean tiles. Take the time to discuss your tiling project in advance with a tiling expert.

Fixing Materials Ceramic Tiles + Sand-Mixed Cement = Require water Ceramic Tiles + Glue-Mixed Cement = Require no water If you use sand-mixed cement to lay ceramic tiles, soak the tiles in water before laying them. Doing so will prevent the tiles from absorbing water from the cement while it is drying; laying the tiles with glue-mixed cement does not require this process. Porcelain Tiles + Sand-Mixed Cement/Glue-Mixed Cement = Require no water

357 10 Interior House Painting Tips & Painting Techniques for the Perfect Paint Job

Here are 10 tips to make your painting projects go smoother and faster while giving you a professional-looking finish that you’ll be proud of. You’ll also find ingenious tips that can cut your cleanup time in half and extend the life of your paint brushes. Tip 1: To avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge

Lap marks are those ugly stripes caused by uneven layers of paint buildup. They occur when you roll over paint that’s already partly dry. (In warm, dry conditions, latex paint can begin to stiffen in less than a minute!) The key to avoiding lap marks is to maintain a “wet edge,” so each stroke of your roller overlaps the previous stroke before the paint can begin to dry. To maintain a wet edge, start near a corner and run the roller up and down the full height of the wall, moving over slightly with each stroke. Move backward where necessary to even out thick spots or runs. Don’t let the roller become nearly dry; reload it often so that it’s always at least half loaded. Keep the open side of the roller frame facing the area that’s already painted. That puts less pressure on the open side of the roller, so you’re less likely to leave paint ridges Tip 2: Mix several cans of paint in a large bucket for a consistent color throughout the room

Once paint is dry, you can’t just pull the tape off the trim. Paint forms a film between the wall and the tape, and removing the tape tears pieces of dried paint off the wall. So before pulling off the tape, cut it loose. Wait for the paint to completely dry, at least 24 hours, then use a sharp utility knife or box cutter knife to slice through the film. Start in an inconspicuous area to make sure the paint is hard enough to slice cleanly. If you cut the paint while it’s still gummy, you’ll make a mess. As you cut the paint, pull up the tape at a 45-degree angle. Tip 4: Paint the trim first, then the ceiling and walls

Prime and texture wall Pros usually follow a certain order when painting a room. They paint the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls. That’s because it’s easier (and faster) to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. And you certainly don’t want to tape them both off!

Tip 6: Clean dirty surfaces so the paint can form a strong bond

If you paint over dirty, oily surfaces, the paint will easily chip or peel off. So before painting, clean grimy areas with a deglosser or heavyduty cleaner intended for prepaint cleaning. They work well to clean painted, varnished or enameled surfaces to improve the adhesion of the new paint. They’re ideal for cleaning greasy or oily areas like kitchen and bathroom walls and removing hand marks around light switches and doorknobs.

Tip 3: Let the paint dry, then cut the tape loose for a perfect edge

Tip 9: Feather out paint where you can’t keep a wet edge

Tip 7: Roll paint along the edges for consistent texture

You can’t cover large areas like ceilings, extratall walls or stairwells in single, continuous strokes, so the best way to minimize lap marks on these areas is to feather out the paint along the edges that you can’t keep wet. The thinner, feathered coat of paint will avoid the buildup that causes the lap mark.

Tip 5: Prime and texture wall patches to avoid a blotchy finish

When coverage is difficult to estimate, add more rather than less. You can always pour the leftover back into cans. For large jobs, use the bucket and a roller screen rather than a roller tray. It’s much faster to load your roller with the screen than to use a roller pan. Simply dunk the roller into the paint bucket, then roll it along the screen until it stops dripping.

But even with canvas or rosin-paper drop cloths, large spills still need to get wiped up right away or they’ll seep through. Clean spills with paper towels or cloth rags. Likewise, if you splatter paint on any other surface, wipe it up immediately.

Wipe on the cleaner in a circular motion using a lint-free cloth or abrasive pad. Start at the bottom and work up. After the surface is clean, fill in any nicks and holes, then sand them smooth before painting. The cleaners are available at paint stores and home centers. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and eye protection.

When painting the trim, you don’t have to be neat. Just concentrate on getting a smooth finish on the wood. Don’t worry if the trim paint gets onto the walls. You’ll cover it later when painting the walls. Once the trim is completely painted and dry (at least 24 hours), tape it off (using an “easy release” painter’s tape), then paint the ceiling, then the walls.

Corners and areas next to trim that are painted only with a brush have a notice- ably different texture than the surrounding paint. To ensure the finished texture will be consistent in these areas, brush on the paint, then immediately roll it out before the paint dries.

Paint color may vary slightly from one can to the next. If you have to open a new can in the middle of a wall, the difference may be noticeable. Mixing the paints together eliminates the problem. It’s best to estimate the amount of paint you’ll need and mix it in a 5-gallon bucket (a process called “boxing”).

canvas stays in place, so you don’t need to tape it, and you can use it to cover any surface. Plastic drop cloths are slippery to walk on or set a ladder on and don’t stay in place. Even worse, paint spills on plastic stay wet, and they can end up on your shoes and get tracked through the house. Canvas is slippery on hard floors, so rosin paper ($10 for 400 sq. ft. at home centers) is better over vinyl, tile and hard- wood. Tape the sheets together and to the floor to provide a nonslip surface.

Use a 3-in. roller with a nap that’s the same thickness as the roller used for the rest of the wall. Roll as close as you can without bumping the opposite wall or slopping paint onto the trim. Finish brushing on the paint and rolling it out in one area before moving on to the next section.

To paint a large section without leaving lap marks, roll the nearly dry roller in different directions along the dry edge, feathering out the paint as you go. After completing the entire length of the wall or ceiling, move to the next section and paint over the feathered edges. For the second coat, apply the paint in the opposite direction. This crisscrossing paint application sharply reduces (if not eliminates) lap marks. Tip 10: Sand trim between coats for an ultra-smooth finish

Tip 8: Use cotton drop cloths rather than plastic One coat of paint usually won’t hide the underlying color and sheen on trim. And if you don’t sand the surface smooth between coats, the finish may have a grainy texture. For a smooth finish, sand the trim before applying each coat of paint.

Freshly painted walls often look blotchy. The color is uniform, but the sheen isn’t consistent. This usually occurs over the holes and cracks you patched with a filler or drywall compound. The porous fillers absorb the paint, dulling the surface (a problem called “flashing”). When light hits these dull spots, they stick out like a sore thumb. The smooth patch also stands out in contrast to the slightly bumpy texture of the rest of the wall. A quick coat of primer is all it takes to eliminate flashing and texture differences. Primer seals the patch so paint won’t sink in and look dull. To match texture, prime with a roller, feathering out the edges. Choose a nap thickness to match the surrounding wall texture (a 3/8-in. nap roller for smooth walls; 1/2-in. for textured).

Spills and spatters happen, regardless of how careful you are. It’s a lot easier to pre- pare for them than to wipe them out of your carpeting or off your wood floor later. All it takes is canvas drop cloths in your work area (a 4-ft. x 15-ft. cloth costs $15). The thick

Sand the trim with a fine-grit sanding sponge. Sponges get into crevices where sandpaper can’t go and let you apply even pressure. Then apply the first coat of paint, let it dry at least 24 hours, lightly sand it again for a completely smooth surface, and apply the second coat. After each sanding, vacuum the trim, then wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove the dust. Information from Family Handyman - www. familyhandeyman.com

2016 Golf Festival Tees-Off In Style

Play is now well underway in the 15th Hua Hin - Cha-Am Golf Festival after a colourful opening ceremony heralding the first weekly tournament day at Lakeview Golf Course on 31st July. The opening ceremony featured representatives of the nine participating golf courses arriving on big bikes, a traditional Thai dance performance with a twist; the dance story rival’s golf prowess being the decider of their dual. In attendance was the Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khirikhan Golf Course Association Chairman Khun Suwit Reanrogruang and Board Members. The Tourism Authority of Thailand was represented by the local and regional Directors. Many more VIPs, including media stars, joined the full field of golfers ready to tee-off. TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “The Hua Hin/Cha-am Golf Festival has been held successfully for many years now to promote golf and other sports that tourists can enjoy in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. As the event has become better known by sportsmen and women internationally, it has become much anticipated by local businesses, which enjoy a boost of visitors during what has traditionally been the province’s low season.” However very few non-Thai golfers were in attendance; with the exception of local golf tour operators and management staff from the golf courses involved. Timely marketing of this important event may still need to be in need of development to achieve the Festival’s promotional aims and to become a focus for low season golfing tourists. During the two months of the festival (August & September), the 9 participating golf courses are offering special promotions at 1,000 and 1,800 THB green fees per person per round (not tournaments). Ariya Jutanugarn Becomes Thailand’s First Major Winner

Twenty-year-old Thai golfer Ariya Jutanugarn made history when she became the first ever Thai golfer, man or woman, to win a major title at the 2016 Women’s British Open Golf Championships at Woburn Golf Club in England. The Thai golfer held off the challenge of Mirim Lee to win by three shots. The 20-year-old had a two-stroke lead over South Korea’s Lee going into the final day and started strongly to lead by five shots after nine holes. A double-bogey at the 13th threatened Jutanugarn’s chances as her rival closed to within one shot. But a birdie at 17 and an untroubled par at the last secured the title. Ariya was showered with water and champagne from sister Moriya and friends when she holed the final putt, and the first hug was from her Mum, Narumon. What did she say to her daughter? “I don’t know. She just cried,” said the new champion. “She then said ‘thank you’, and that made my day. “For me it was hard today. I felt a little bit nervous at times. I think this victory is really important for me and Thai golf. I hope I can inspire some players in Thailand.” .....BBC

A2: Hole-in-one. The play of the hole was completed when the player holed that ball. Decision 1-1/2.

A Hole-In-One On the Way To The Gold Medal Olympian Justin Rose made history when he hit the first hole-in-one in modern Olympic golf history on his way to winning the gold medal.

Question 3: What are the approximate odds for an average golfer scoring a hole-in-one, as calculated by actuaries at insurance companies that insure special prizes for the feat? A5: 12,500 to 1. On average, a player who plays courses with four Par-3s, twice a week, should score a hole-in-one every 30 years! (Reference Wikipedia).

This month we have moved away from the usual format and feature some interesting Q & A about Holes-in-One, just in case you get lucky soon. Question 1: Outside of the USA and Mexico, a player will lose their amateur status if they accept a prize of more than ($US750), or the equivalent, for a hole-in-one made during a competition. True or False? A1: False. This limit was removed by the R&A in January 2012. Question 2: A player played their tee shot to the left of a par-3 into a bush at the side of the putting green, and the played a provisional ball. After a fruitless search for their original ball the provisional ball was holed with two further strokes. Then the player found the original ball in the hole, did the player score a hole-in-one or 5?

Question 4: On a par-3 a player hits their first ball into water, tees another ball and hits it straight into the hole. They can claim a prize for a hole-in-one. True or False? A6: False. They have scored 3 on the hole. Question 5: It is traditional for a player who has scored a hole-in-one to buy a round of drinks for everyone at the clubhouse bar. True or False? A9: True. Justin Rose is a U.S. Open winner and now an Olympic gold medalist, winning the men’s Olympic golf tournament on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro in a thriller of a duel against Henrik Stenson. American Matt Kuchar secured the bronze medal

The Briton prevailed with a two-shot win on the Olympic Golf Course, making a 2-foot birdie putt on the final hole to lock up the gold medal. Rose and Stenson were tied heading into the par-5 finishing hole Stenson went first, leaving approximately 20 feet for birdie, before Rose chipped close to force Stenson’s hand. The reigning British Open champion three-putted for bogey, then Rose tapped in for the victory with a final-round 67.

Narrow Your Stance for Crisper Chip Shots Golf Tip September 2016 If you set up with a wide stance, it’s easy to hang back with your upper body and have your spine tilting away from the target (Pic 1). More often than not, you’ll hit your chip shots fat or thin from this position. Instead, set up with a narrow stance and feel that your whole body is leaning slightly toward the target (Pic 2) When you swing, maintain this body-forward position as it will encourage you to keep your hands ahead of the clubhead past impact. You’re allowing the club to work down and through the shot--ideal for crisp contact. John Wither PGA Golf Professional Banyan Golf Club, Hua Hin www.huahingolfacademy.com, Tel +66 (0) 811426216

40 12 Golf Proves it Belongs in New Owners At Majestic Creek Country Club Olympics During Rio Games Thai-listed steel supplier Max Metal Corporation Pcl has acquired stakes in a renewable energy operation and a Hua Hin golf course for a consideration of 450 million THB.

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson’s battle for the gold medal was a heck of an opening act at the Olympics. And while the race for gold wasn’t nearly as exciting for the women, it was still an incredible two weeks in Rio for golf. There were plenty of concerns heading into the Games, but the top players rose to the occasion and it became clear early on that, yes, this was something bigger than another 72-hole, stroke-play event. In the end, six medals were handed out to six different countries – Great Britain, Sweden, the United States, Korea, New Zealand and China. Those who missed out on the podium were heartbroken when the realization hit that it would be another four years before they would get another chance. Both the men’s and women’s medal stands were filled with three of the top-15 players in the world. Both events benefitted from the major-championship pedigrees of their contenders. Who knows what the world will look like in 2020, but it’s highly unlikely Tokyo will resemble Rio. With great attendance in Rio and strong TV ratings, it would be very surprising not to see golf become a fixture at the Olympics, long past Tokyo in 2020.

MAX’s director Itthichai Arungsrisangchai said, the acquisitions are in line with the company’s policy to diversify into other businesses, which can generate income and profit. MAX will fund these acquisitions by using the remaining from the capital increase amount of 839 million THB, he added.

39 11 ‘Rhodes Rules School’ About A Hole-In-One For golfers of all abilities who wish to improve their knowledge and understanding of the Rules of Golf; provided by Rules guru and author Barry Rhodes.

A9: True. The answers to the questions have been referenced to the Rules of Golf 2016 ©2015 and the Decisions on the Rules of Golf 20162017 ©2015, as approved by R&A Rules Limited and The United States Golf Association. Da Mario Italian Ristorante; Or Should That Be “Da Cristian”?

“Da Mario” simply translated from Italian means “Mario’s” – Mario’s Italian Ristorante Pizzeria Hua Hin that is. As the owner and Chef is Cristian Uleri, an obvious question may be; “Where is Mario?” The simple answer that in years gone-by, Christian had a partner named Mario and together they operated Italian restaurants in both Phuket and Hua Hin. An amiable agreement lead to Cristian taking over Da Mario in Hua Hin with his partner retaining the Phuket operation. They remain the best of friends, but changing the familiar name of this well patronised Hua Hin restaurant was never a good business idea. Restaurant-goers be well advised – look for Cristian as your Maitre ‘D (pardon the French); not Mario! July 12th this year was a momentous day in the 9 year history of Da Mario. At the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bangkok, the Thai Italian Chamber of Commerce awarded Da Mario Italian Ristorante Hua Hin – Chef Cristian Uleri the 2016 Ospitalità Italiana Award. This project involves more than 40 Countries and 65 Chambers of Commerce, which certifies authentic Italian restaurants that follow the strict requirements set by the Italian Institute for Research in Tourism (IS.N.A.R.T.) in Italian quality. Every year worldwide, including Thailand, the award is made to restaurants certifying the provision of fine Italian food and beverages. This year eleven awards were made in Thailand. Eight went to Bangkok restaurants, one to Chonburi and one to a Phuket restaurant. Da Mario was the only Hua Hin recipient. The clear requirement of the Ospitalità Italiana Award is that the Italian cuisine is authentic, true to the traditions of a country where dining is not just about enjoying a meal but celebrating a way of life.

Italians are passionate about football (Cristian is a Juventus supporter) but even more so about Italian cuisine. This award w i l l n eve r b e m a d e t o restaurants which present some sort of ‘hybrid’ Italian food, perhaps pandering to those looking for the influence of flavours from a different country of origin. It must be Italian through and through. This one of the few awards made after judges visit the restaurants and conduct something akin to an audit of authenticity. It’s a process commencing in January and including recommendations being sent to Italy before the final results are known. Award winners are not those which have conducted a successful marketing exercise to entice favorable reviews or facebook ‘likes’. It’s about Italian connoisseurs (or is that conoscitori?) judging what Italian cuisine should really be. Our congratulations to Cristian and Da Mario on this fine achievement. We suggested that the ‘real Mario’ may be a little jealous as his Phuket restaurant was not a recipient. Despite being assured this would not be a problem; some interesting conversations seem inevitable at Cristian and Mario’s next meeting. This Award is really something to brag about! Movie Review Update Given that Pete has become a cross between Mowgli and a young Tarzan, the big questions are how he will cope with his return to civilization and what happens once the local community learn about Elliot. Grace’s woodcarver grandpa Meacham (Robert Redford) has always spun tall tales about what lurks in the woods and now it seems he might have been telling the truth. In a summer largely filled with hectic, big-budget blockbusters top-heavy with special effects and bombast, Pete’s Dragon is sweetly refreshing in its gentle demeanour and traditional storytelling. The dragon has a puppy-dog charm rather than ferocity and the film is all about family connections, growing up and feeling safe. There is a villain of the piece in Karl Urban’s Gavin and his dastardly plan to hunt Elliott down but he never seems much of a threat to the film’s mild-mannered, understated approach. The big dramas here are all about Pete, his friendship with Elliot and finding a place they can both call homes. There are no great demands upon the adult actors but Dallas Bryce Howard is suitably sincere as the kindly Grace and Redford, who turns 80 this month, is still an effortless, twinkly-eyed charmer as the wise old grandpa. Director David Lowery transforms the story of a young boy and his big friendly dragon into a darker, more somber affair in which moments of magic bubble to the surface of a real and dangerous world. But it is still a charming, old-fashioned family film that echoes E.T. and even harks back to the days of Lassie Come Home. The opening scenes depict all the force and horror of a car accident in which Pete’s parents are killed.

Directed By: David Lowery Written By: David Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, Malcolm Marmorstein In Theaters: 25 August 2016 Runtime: 90 Minutes Studio: Walt Disney Pictures Genre: Animation, Kids &Family

The youngster survives and crawls from the crash site into the woods. You wouldn’t give good odds on his survival but among all the scary noises and frightening wolves, Pete finds a protector in a furry, lovable green dragon that he calls Elliot. The years pass as Pete (now played by Oakes Fegley) and Elliot become the best of friends. However as a logging company starts to chop down their own personal playground, the pair is discovered by forest ranger Grace (Dallas Bryce Howard).

The acting honors fall to Oakes Fegley who captures all the dilemmas and insecurities of the young Pete and makes us care about his friendship with the cuddly Elliot. It may be extremely slight and even too wholesome for modern tastes but Pete’s Dragon is still welcome family fare.

An Inspired Tasting Menu at Villazzo

The Villazzo Restaurant at V Villas Hua Hin, MGallery by Sofitel, recently hosted two special dinners prepared by rising star chef Nicolas Basset Chef Nicolas is the Executive Sous Chef at the French restaurant La VIE, at VIE Hotel Bangkok, MGallery by Sofitel. He travelled to Hua Hin to prepare two special menus featuring food inspired by Michelin star chefs. Chef Nicolas has worked with some of the world’s illustrious names in gastronomy such as Albert Roux and Marcus Wareing. He grew up in both France and Finland, and while working as a part-time chef in London at 19, he fell in love with creating innovative dishes.

His resume is impressive, including stints at Michelinstar The Orrery Restaurant, Chez Kristof (now closed), and Michelin-star La Trompette. In Thailand, he has worked at L’Appart at Sofitel Sukhumvit, and the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok before joining La VIE – Creative French Cuisine. The Villazzo restaurant in Hua Hin is the resort’s chic poolside eatery, serving exquisite cuisine alfresco or in air-conditioned comfort. V Villas Hua Hin was recently re-branded as an MGallery by Sofitel. MGallery is a collection of boutique hotels dedicated to lovers of life, literature and culture. MGallery hotels are each inspired by their own stories, which you’ll hear whispered through the halls, echoed in the artful design and layered into the details of signature dishes and cocktails. Our French-inspired meal began with an amuse-bouche (a single, bite-sized hors d’œuvre) of asparagus (white and green), sherry, mascarpone, and shaved truffle, setting the tone for the meal ahead. FOOD & Entertainment, September 2016

The starter was pan-seared Hokkaido scallops and cauliflower in a wild mushroom emulsion topped with a truffle-infused foam. The main course was Barbary duck imported from Australia. The creatively-plated dish also included butternut squash, and rosemary dusted peaches. The sweet and savoury balance was perfection. Dessert came in the form of a white chocolate cake with elements of tonika bea, pineapple and coconut. Throughout the meal, Chef Nicolas went from table to table presenting and explaining his dishes to the eager diners. In the end we were treated to a sneak-peek of the following night’s menu which included seared foie-gras escallope, butter-poached Maine lobster, and a tarte Bourdaloue. Exotic Cuisine In Thailand Fresh Egg Yolk & Ice Cream

Contrary to what you might believe, egg is no stranger to many frozen desserts. But seriously, who would want to see egg in their ice cream anyway?

is beautiful and you won’t be able to stop yourself from trying it, even though a voice in the back of your head says, “that’s totally a raw egg.”

Does the idea of yellow swirls of egg yolk marbling a scoop of coconut ice cream sound good? It’s a bit hard to imagine how this could be in any way appetising, but when you taste it you will know why this is a pretty genius food idea.

The frozen egg, when mixed with coconut ice cream, makes the texture denser and adds chewy bits of chunk. It doesn’t add a funny taste or add smell to the ice cream.

Kai Kaeng (literally “Frozen Egg Ice Cream” in Thai), an egg yolk is mixed into the coconut ice cream just moments before it is scooped up into small bowls to be served. Those few seconds, not even a minute, are enough for the frozen ice cream to freeze the yolk from a yellow liquid into solid swirls. The result

These colorful ingredients can be found at many shaved ice stands. You can also get sweetened palm seed, coconut chunks, candied pumpkin, sweetened longan, corn, sweet sticky rice, herbal jelly, Thai melon, toasted peanut, lod chong, and salim. All of these can be mixed to your liking. There is no rule on how to mix these toppings properly so feel free to try a crazy combo. FOOD & Entertainment, September 2016

Pah-La-U Durian Festival

Market Village Hua Hin is hosting an event durian Pah- La- U festival on 2nd – 6th September. Everyone can taste the most famous of local fruit; Pah- La U- is a new kind of durian which has a smooth texture, smell good, and are sweet. There will also be other kinds of fruits such as mangosteen, rambutan and many more. Durian is sold in Asian markets or Asian grocery stores. Look for light-colored spikes without any dark brown patches or bits of white between the spikes (signs of over-ripeness). Durian fruit freezes well, and is often exported and sold frozen. Store your durian in the refrigerator or a cool place until you’re ready to open it. Selecting Your Durian The first thing that you should do is pick the durian up in both your palms. Do this gently, and if the thorns hurt, use some protection for your hands. Place the durian next to your ear, and give it a gentle shake, not unlike shaking maracas to some soul music. If there is

no sound, it means that the fruit is too ripe. If there is a hard knocking sound, the fruit is not ripe enough. What you want to hear are dull, subtle knocks. After identifying the right knocking sounds, you want to narrow your choice down further with the right smell. Put the durian about an inch from your nose. Take a whiff. Can you smell the slightly fragrant odor? If it smells raw, like an unripe fruit, then the durian is probably not ripe. If the smell is strong and over-powering, it is probably too ripe and the flesh is likely to be soft and gooey. It should smell just so – neither too raw nor too strong. Health Benefits Durian is very healthy, with high concentrations of vitamins and minerals. It is unique among fruit in that it contains the B-complex vitamins (great for vegetarians!). It is also rich in dietary fibre and high in vitamin C, potassium, essential amino acid, copper, iron, and magnesium.

12 56 Hua Hin Zoo - A Family Friendly Adventure

A zoo (short for zoological garden or zoological park, and also called an animal park or menagerie) is a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and in which they may also be bred. The oldest zoo in the world still in existence is the Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna, Austria. It was constructed by Adrian van Stekhoven in 1752, but the zoo’s predecessor - the royal menagerie - dates back to 3,500 B.C. Hua Hin joined this long legacy of zoos by opening the Hua Hin Zoo earlier this year. Part interactive petting zoo, part observation only, the zoo encourages visitors to buy food to feed to the various animals. Available for purchase are natural leaves, carrots, bananas and sunflower seeds.

The animal park is appropriate for the whole family. There are wide paths that connect the exhibits so that strollers and older people can get around safely. While there are smaller foot paths that are a little rocky in places leading even closer to the exhibits, staying on the main path provides a great vantage point. Just inside the entrance gate are bicycles that can be rented to pedal around the compound it walking is not your thing. There is a large gift shop with a wide range of items, and an open-air restaurant.

There is a large aviary section featuring peacocks, pheasants, turkeys, and others, a large fenced in area for deer and a separate one for goats, and a cute little hut for alpaca. Also in the zoo are buffalo, tigers and bears, oh my. Animals I touched were a baby elephant and its mother (to which I fed a basket of bananas), a baby white lion, and a baby black and white goat. I’m sure there were others I could’ve petted, but these were as adventurous as I got. In one area there are huts that children can enter to feed piglets and rabbits. And for the adventurous, you can purchase a bottle of milk (100 THB) to feed the baby white lion who is called Meena. Scattered throughout the grounds are plenty of photo opportunities. Whether it is the natural greenery, or the various props scattered about, there are no shortage of ideas. FOOD & Entertainment, September 2016

The grounds are spacious with plenty of mature trees providing ample shade for picnics and relaxing and numerous lakes. Tickets for the zoo are 250 THB for adults (ages 10 and up), 150 THB for kids 3 to 9, and free for kids under 3. Prices are the same for nationals and for expatriates. The zoo is open daily from 8AM to 6PM. Weekends are busier than weekdays, but there is never a bad time to visit. Hua Hin Zoo is located at 369/10, Soi Moo Baan Hua Na, Hin Lek Fai. There are plenty of colourful signs showing the way. There is some construction going on, so I imagine the zoo is still a work in progress with more to come in the future.

1316 57 Air Space Has Landed on the Runway in Khao Takiab and the Doors are Open

The glasshouse barn-like space with the full scale replica of the world’s first aircraft, the 1903 Wright Flyer hanging from the ceiling, sets the scene. Air Space actually includes three ‘Space’s; The Café, The Restaurant, and The Outdoor Garden. The Café offers an all-day Western menu, including breakfast and coffee. The coffee bar features coffee beans from Chiang Mai, as well as a selection of nine distinctive coffee tastes including beans from Kenya, Honduras and Nicaragua. The signature coffee is “deconstructed latte,” served in champagne glasses. Customers are encouraged to take a shot of espresso, a small glass of warm milk, a glass of café latte, a glass of sparkling water and a bite of homemade pastry. The Restaurant offers seafood and Thai cuisine. The must-try appetiser is “miang som o” (herbed pomelo salad with grilled shrimps on deep fried wild betel leaves). For main dishes, stir fried crab meat with herbs and paprika, deep fried sea bass topped with Thai style spicy sauce, and roasted duck with red curry and fresh fruits are highly recommended. Finishing off the meal with iced ladcheag in coconut milk with cantaloupe, black sticky rice, and homemade popped rice would be a nice way to sweeten the rest of the day. The Outdoor Garden offers a full bar list, including the Thai herbal drinks – “naree rumpueng” and “mah kratueb rong.”

Highlights include seven aviation-themed cocktails, including “steward” and “black box.” The Steward is a blend of whisky and fresh coconut water. The taste reflects the steward’s character; aggressively charming. The very first sip brings a strong taste of whisky, yet the after taste is soft, creamy, and freshly sweet from coconut water. A black box, as its name suggests is served in a black box. Order it next time you are

at Air Space to reveal what is hidden inside. Live music is provided from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Monday to Thursday, and from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM on Friday to Sunday. For further information: Call 063-916-0999 or see www.fb.com/airspacehuahin, Address: 12/399 Hua Dorn, Nong Kae (Khao Takiab)

16 58 14 Finding Fresh Fish

The construction of new buildings adjacent to the fishing pier in Hua Hin will prevent most of us greeting fishing boats returning to port with their catch for the next few months. Longer term we expect that these new facilities will give Hua Hin residents and visitors even easier access to freshly caught seafood. But fear-not, buying fresh seafood along the coast from Pranburi to Cha-Am is still very easy; here are just some of the options. Hua Hin In Hua Hin the best place to find the freshest seafood is at the many local and night markets. Huana Market (across from Vana Nava Waterpark) This market has a little bit of everything, but specializes in seafood. The selection changes daily, but there are always a wide variety of shrimp available, plus whatever cockles are in season. Chat Chai Market This market starts early in the morning and runs until mid-day. Here you will find a section dedicated to fresh seafood. The earlier you go the better for the best selection. Khao Takiab Seafood Market At the southern end of Hua Hin is the town of Khao Takiab. Here you will find a seafood market that starts in the morning and runs all day long. Located across the street from

a tributary from the Gulf of Thailand, the fishing boats pull right up to the docks and offer their catch to the vendors that dot the roadway. Aside from the usual shrimp and fish, the market is known for their scallops, which you can buy in-shell or out of shell. On a recent visit there was an abundance of horseshoe crab, so you never know what might be on offer. The market is also a great place to take pictures of the local fisherman as they repair their nets. You might also run into a monkey or two that like to scour the market for any scraps, Cha-Am The inlet past the northern end of the Cha-Am beach is home to a local seafood industry. The harbour is home port to fishing boats of all shapes and sizes which supply the Cha-Am fish market every morning. The market is not only set up to supply seafood either to Bangkok and wider Thailand, but also locally. Those ‘in the know’ will arrive early, not long after sun-up when the boats return after their overnight expedition. Buyers include restaurant owners and chefs, all looking for supplies to satisfy the demands of diners later in the day. Vendors may choose to keep their seafood in tanks at their premises or to immediately put the catch on ice; they know freshness is vital. However seafood buyers include those who are only purchasing small quantities for their family and friends, anyone can buy, but by mid-morning stall owners start to leave, it’s been a long day for them already. You need to be early to find the best ‘catch of the day’.

Another option in Cha-Am is to visit stalls which operate most of the day a little further south of the fishing harbour. Around Sois 4-5 south, at the other end of the beach road to the port, you’ll find seafood vendors who were purchasers at the fishing boat harbour earlier in the day or who may have their own fishing boat as a small business. The numbered stalls are on both sides of the beach road and welcome passers-by. They display seafood either in tanks or on ice and you can select your personal choice as you wish. Speaking Thai is not a requirement, sign language will do. Prices by weight are on display. How do you know when seafood is fresh? Knowing how to choose fresh fish or seafood is a vital skill for a seafood cook. Unless you caught the fish yourself, you may have no way of knowing exactly how fresh it is. But buying fresh fish is easy if you know what to look for. The best way to choose a live fish or crab or lobster is to look for, well, life. Is it scampering around in its tank? Swimming happily? Or is it sulking in a corner or hanging motionless and panting? If so, don’t buy it. Look for bright, clear eyes. The eyes are the window to a truly fresh fish, for they fade quickly into gray dullness. Dull-eyed

fish may be safe to eat, but they are past their prime. Next look at the fish. Does it shine? Does it look metallic and clean? Or has it dulled or has discolored patches on it? If so, it is marginal. Smell it. A fresh fish should smell like clean water, or a touch briny or even like cucumbers. Under no circumstances should you buy a nasty smelling fish. Cooking won’t improve it. Look at the gills. They should be a rich red. If the fish is old, they will turn the color of faded brick. Look for vibrant flesh. All fish fade as they age. If the fillet still has skin, that skin should look as pristine as the skin on an equally good whole fish – shiny and metallic. Is there liquid on the meat? If so, that liquid should be clear, not milky. Milky liquid on a fillet is the first stage of rot. Press the meat with your finger. It should be resilient enough so your indentation disappears. If your fingerprint remains, move on. The most important things to remember when bringing home fresh fish, keep it SUPER COLD, be prepared!

The Quintessential Local Market in Hua Hin

The Night Market in Hua Hin is the quintessential market in town, and for good reason: it boasts a plethora souvenirs, clothing, electronics, and massage spots. But the true star of the show is the food

But then the preparations you can choose from are the icing on the cake.

Technically located on Soi 72 off Petchkasem Road, the market continues to evolve and grow, and a new entrance has sprung up on Soi 72/1. This section of the market is an indoor/outdoor mall, and connects to the main market via a winding path.

Want to keep it simple? Butter poach your lobster. Feeling indulgent? Try your lobster Thermidor style (trust me). Or try your whole fish deep fried with Thai spices - a classic that is always tasty.

Starting from Petchkasem Road and working west down Soi 72 there are a smattering of food stalls, but once across the crossroad to the back part of the soi you will find the main food stalls.

Also known as the Night Bazaar, the market is open daily from 6PM to 1AM, and is bustling with activity from the get-go. Vendors start setting up as early as 5PM, but if you want to visit when everything is in full swing you should visit after 6:30PM.

The food here is fantastic. Choosing to eat from a food stall or from one of the restaurants that spill forward into the crowded streets, one can’t go wrong. There are plenty of local foods available at the market. Vendors who specialise in just one or two items have perfected the art of those items and will most likely be delicious. Also any vendor with Thais lining up is a good indicator that the food is delicious. FOOD & Entertainment, September 2016

But the seafood is not to be missed. Huge plump lobsters, glistening prawns, horseshoe crabs, and variety of whole fish are available and sold by weight.

The night market is the type of market you want to take your time with - go without an agenda and just wander. Stop for a bite here, pick up a souvenir there, have another bite over there - there is no wrong way to enjoy this market. And, like all local markets in Hua Hin, admission is free.

1516 59 Elevated Street Food, Not Elevated Pricing

Thai street food was just ranked number one in the world by CNN. However, many visitors to Hua Hin find the idea of street food a little daunting But thanks to Talay Thai restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, travelers can sample the best of Thai street food in a more controlled environment. Set in three interconnecting beachfront pavilions with a central courtyard, Talay Thai offers authentic Thai cuisine. The home-style cooking brings out savoury and sweet flavours that characterises Thai cuisine. My dining companion and I arrived at the restaurant for their daily Sabai-Sabai promotion just as dusk was setting in. We were served a complimentary bowl of prawn chips, with a creamy, sweet and spicy chilli dipping sauce. They should bottle the sauce and sell it in their gift shop – it is so tasty. For dinks we went with a promotional Treeline chardonnay. At 200 baht a glass, this Australian wine paired wonderfully with the Thai food. The first dishes we sampled were the Hat Yai-style deep fried chicken (gai tord) and the fried shrimp cakes (tod mun goong) – both a great start to our feast.

Next came a bowl of tom yum goong – the ubiquitous spicy and sour prawn soup with lemongrass. A favourite among foreigners for many years, the Talay version is one not to miss.

Of course we had to sample a curry, and the kang phad prik gaeng kari was highly recommended by our server. The tender rock lobster swimming in a rich yellow curry was a savoury triumph with just a hint of heat. Not wanting to leave without trying a Talay Thai Specialty, we ordered the deep-friend sea bass (pla ka pong tord ta krai). The deep fried fish had been removed from the bone for easy eating. The sweet mango sauce with a touch of lemongrass paired perfectly with the fried fish. We finished our meal with a scoop of lemongrass ice cream and scoop of coconut ice cream. I didn’t think I’d have any room left, but I managed… Throughout the meal we were entertained by live music – a lovely duo with a huge repertoire of songs (and they take requests).
