By attending a meeting last month at the Hu Hin Airport along with representatives of the relevant official agencies, we were privy to a presentation by the airline management. However this edition of Hua Hin Today presents only general information and does include specifics such as proposed routes, projected passenger numbers and details of the concessions being sought. Our aim is to inform the community without breaching the confidentiality and privilege of attending the presentation meeting. We hope to have achieved this aim. In July this year Hua Hin Today reported on plans for the upgrading of Thailand’s airports, but Hua Hin was then off the map as far as any government initiated international air travel was concerned. What can this mean to Hua Hin?
Enter AirAsia and all that has changed. At a meeting between AirAsia management, government and airport authority officials together with tourism and hospitality representatives an AirAsia Five Year Network Plan & AirAsia Partnership Proposal was revealed to participants. Hua Hin Today was able to attend that meeting to hear the proposal details. However this information has yet to be made public. This is much more than a plan for flights between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur. This is a plan to link Hua Hin to many more cities and unique routes to other countries.
The Ministry of Transport needs to approve a proposed package of incentives before flights can commence, says Darun Saengchai, director general of the Department of Airports.

Hua Hin Airport has all the essential requisites During the airports rather chequered history there have been a number of attempts to manage regular flights; both domestic and international which have been shortlived.

AirAsia – Tony’s Dream Really Took Off AirAsia was established in 1993 and began operations on 18 November 1996. In 2001, the indebted airline was bought by Tony Fernandes’ company Tune Air Sdn Bhd. Fernandes turned the company around, producing a profit in 2002 and launching new routes from its original hub in Kuala Lumpur. In 2003, AirAsia opened a second hub at Senai International Airport near Singapore and launched its first international flight to Bangkok. From 2 aircraft in 2001 to 233 in 2017, this growth is projected to reach 525 aircraft by 2028. “The A320 has played a key role in our success, enabling us to offer our passengers the lowest fares possible and completely redefine short haul travel in Asia.” said Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group CEO. AirAsia is well known for venturing into uncharted destinations and unique routes. Hua Hin is considered to be a ‘readymade product’, well in advance of previous successful new destinations such as Langkawi (Malaysia) or Badung in Indonesia where there was little infrastructure, including hotels or tourism services prior to the start-up. The clear message is that aviation is a key component in tourism development. Details of the AirAsia proposal have not been officially made available for publication although we can say that concessions are significant and will need to be carefully assessed as reasonable and the relevant budgets to be affected manageable. AirAsia supports the acceptance of concessions by stati ng that one of the fundamental considerations is that rebates increase passenger numbers as low cost carrier passengers are very price sensitive.
“Allow us to bring people to Hua Hin” pleads AirAsia’s Dilhan Haradasa; and this means lots of people; tourism numbers could increase dramatically. With about 30,000 hotel rooms and extensive new amenities to serve growing numbers of tourists and residents, the Hua Hin community has long yearned for both domestic and international air connections. “This is great news for Hua Hin”, says Black Mountain Managing Director Harald Elisson. “The convenience of having an international airport just 20 minutes away from Black Mountain gives visitors and residents a greater choice of easy travel options, and will give even more people the opportunity to come here”. But this is not just about big numbers. One of the projected benefits is for tourist numbers to be spread out during the year and an end to the low season blues. Huge economic benefits may be in reach for the biggest enterprises to the smallest home business.
Darun Saengchai, director general of the Department of Airports has not disclosed when the approval is expected, saying only that it should not take too long if the airline is to meet the planned December launch date. However this influx of visitors requires careful management if the character of the city is to remain. AirAsia flights may be the catalyst for growth however retaining the family-friendly and relaxed charm of the community is for local planners to carefully consider. Progress for Hua Hin is inevitable. The opening of Hua Hin Airport to international traffic presents an opportunity to leap forward towards that future as a real ‘game-changer’ for the local tourism industry.

6 Warren Shaw’s Legacy to Education in Hua Hin Following removal of a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma) in 2011, Warren continued an active life as a teacher/trainer in the Cha-Am/Hua Hin communities. Sadly, in July 2016 the cancer returned to his lymph system with widespread lesions of cancer detected. Warren and his wife Teresa decided to return to family in the UK in November, and in December he was admitted to Nottingham City Hospital where he died peacefully with his wife by his side on December 26th. Teresa told Hua Hin Today: “Warren had always been a selfless giver in life, and when he found he could not be an organ donor due to the cancer spreading in his body, he wondered what else he could do. Following some research on the internet, he decided to donate his body for medical education and research to help other people and train future medical professionals”. Warren donated his body to the UK National Repository in Nottingham (www.nuh.nhs. uk/bodydonation), however, this option is becoming more widely available in Thailand through university medical schools. Both Warren and Teresa had worked in NHS Cancer Care in the UK which helped them to recognize changes in a mole that he had for many years on his upper arm. Teresa urged people to have any skin issues checked in case they are symptoms of cancer saying: “I think a lot of people may have ignored that changing of the mole but because he worked in cancer care and had the awareness, he got it checked out. If he had left it longer, it could have spread five years earlier. Warren had five more happy years in Thailand because he picked it up early.”

Warren was the Lead Lecturer of the Laureate English Program at Stamford International University. After succumbing to cancer in 2016, the Warren Shaw Memorial Scholarship was set-up to provide Hua Hin students with the chance of a university education.
Teresa Shaw is now back in Thailand and working to create an ongoing legacy in memory of her husband. She is raising money to establish the Warren Shaw Memorial Scholarship to enable students at the Hua Hin School to pursue a university education. The aim of the Scholarship is to continue Warren’s legacy of supporting education in Thailand. Teresa said: “The support has been fantastic. Friends and family around the world have been sending in donations. A fund raising event in Hua Hin earlier this year raised 40,000 THB.
Events have been held in the UK and Thailand celebrating Warren’s life and fund-raising for the scholarship The next fund raising venture will be with friends and family to run the River Kwai Half Marathon (21 km) or 10km on 10th September. Warren was planning to run the River Kwai Half Marathon in 2016, however, due to his illness he had to withdraw from the race. Warren Shaw’s dedication to education in Hua Hin has been honoured through the establishment of the memorial scholarship. Teresa has set up a page for the scholarship to update people about fundraising and student selection for the initial scholarship. ASEAN Summer School Held in Hua Hin
The Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Montree Chuphu has opened The Enhanced Networking on Sustainable Urban Development in ASEAN: Summer School (SUD ASEAN) in Hua Hin. Taking place at Hua Hin Municipality, the event featured a special lecture by Dr. Awasda Phongphiphat for Thai students and other ASEAN member countries; that is Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It was organised by the Centre for Excellence on Energy Technology and Environment, King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). The major objective of the SUD ASEAN Summer School is to promote knowledge exchange on biodegradable energy production from garbage. Hua Hin
was selected as the event’s venue because it is considered to be city of low carbon dioxide emissions as a model city for ASEAN countries. The event also enabled the participants to understand current urban issues and think about ways of sustainable urban improvement for further development.
Donating Used Cellphones
The Department of Pollution Control is launching a campaign to encourage people to donate used cellphones, aiming to manage at least 9,000,000 unused mobile devices by the end of the year.

This activity involved the Department of Pollution Control, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, the Office of National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission. Income and benefits from the campaign will be donated to various Thai charity organizations.
As the cellphone system is being transformed to the digital technology old mobile devices are becoming obsolete and the number of old and unused cellphones is increasing. Some people discard cellphones inappropriately with other garbage. Unused cellphones require a proper form of disposal to prevent potential effects on the environment. Data from 2016 shows that the sale of cellphones in Thailand increased 47% or 22 million cellphones had been purchased. This means that 1,721 tons of old cellphones are discarded, and more mobile devices tend be unused every year. Unless correct and proper management of discarded cellphones is introduced, environmental problems follow. The Department of Pollution Control is campaigning for correct, effective and systematic disposal of unwanted cellphones to avoid environmental problems and to encourage social responsibility.

8 The Rotary Club of Hua Hin’s New President Continues to ‘Make a Difference’ In 1930 a visiting Canadian to Bangkok established the first Rotary International Club in Thailand. Since then over 300 clubs have sprung up all over the Kingdom. Today, it is a rare town in Thailand that does not boast at least one Rotary club. Rotary has two Clubs based in Hua Hin. The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin is the English language Rotary Club formed in 2009 with Swedish national, Dr Birger Rexed, as the current President. However this year the Rotary Club of Hua Hin, the Thai language Rotary Club, celebrates its 30th birthday with Mrs Wadsana Rai as the President from July 1st.
Mrs Wadsana has been a Member of the Club for 12 of those 30 years after leaving her home town of Kanchanaburi and then with her husband Udai Rai establishing the Picasso Tailor Co. in Hua Hin in 1993. The business can now proudly boast that it is Hua Hin’s longest established tailoring business. Rotary Clubs bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services and to encourage high ethical standards. As President, Mrs Wadsana’s primary role is to be the public face of that community involvement. This means being an active participant in the Club’s many community projects such as blood donation drives, mangrove restoration projects and the

royally sponsored ‘brain-based learning’ education model to a local school. Apart from the advantages of being part of a local network of community leaders, Rotary offers a welcome to visitors from like-minded Rotary Members worldwide. That welcome suits Mrs Wadsana as a frequent traveller (17 countries so far), especially to investigate fashion trends around the world to ensure that her family business is up to date with the latest fashion trends. The bad news is being President has necessitated cancelling such a trip
to Australia later this year where she had hoped to meet up with Rotary International President Ian Riseley, a Member of the Rotary Club of Sandringham (Melbourne). Being the President requires dedication with major time commitments. The 2017-18 Rotary International presidential theme; Rotary: Making a Difference, does not signal any big changes for the Rotary Club of Hua Hin. This has been the real mission since the Club’s formation 30 years ago and a mission that Mrs Wadsana as the President is dedicated to do her best to continue.

Flood Economic Damages Estimated at Over 15.7 Billion THB
The Kasikorn Research Centre says damage to the national economy caused by the flood crisis could amount to more than 15.7 billion THB or 0.1% of GDP in total.
This figure does not include damages to property and basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges among others, it said. The centre also estimated that the damage to the agricultural sector alone will exceed 12 billion THB. The worst-hit provinces are Sakon Nakhon, Maha Sarakham, Si Sa Ket, Nakhon Ratchasima and Kalasin. Thailand’s cabinet has approved 1.6 billion THB in relief for farmers hit by floods in the north and northeast. Twenty-nine people have been killed and some 700,000 hectares of farmland damaged by flooding in 36 of Thailand’s 77 provinces. Some of the areas hit by flooding are used for growing rice and the floods could impact rice production during the off-season production cycle starting mid-August.
Treasury Department has announced that it will be helping flood victims in their recovery by allowing rent payments to be deferred for up to 2 years. Treasury Department deputy director-general Amornrat Klumplob said that treasury officials have been ordered to carry out an immediate survey of damages to properties currently being leased that have been flooded. For properties leased as dwellings or residences that have suffered partial flooding, she said, the Treasury Department will grant a one year exemption on rent collection. For homes that have suffered total damage and conditions are unlivable, rent payments could be postponed for two-years. This does not apply to homes that have been completely inundated but not suffered a total loss and can still be lived in after the flooding.
The survey by the Treasury Department thus far showed that in 11 provinces which were flooded, there are more than 3,000 afflicted tenants, half of them are in Sakon Nakhon. With regards to properties leased for agricultural purposes, she said if crops have been lost to the floods, the department will allow one year exemption on rent collection to help recovery. King Maha Vajiralongkorn had urged the government to work out long-term water management plans, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters. Thai PBS

10 CJ Express Plans 4 Billion THB Investment
CJ Express Co, the operator of CJ Express convenience stores and CJ supermarkets, plans to invest 4 billion THB as part of a plan to double the size of the business to fetch 20 billion THB in sales by 2020. “If we are in a consumer product business, we will never be successful if we don’t have our own distribution. Convenience stores fit in with consumers’ lifestyles. People like shopping at outlets... near their homes due to busy traffic these days.”

Managing director Sathien Setthasit Managing director Sathien Setthasit said about 3.7 billion baht will be used to open 370 new CJ Express convenience stores and supermarkets this year through 2020. The remaining 300 million baht will be spent on renovating existing stores and upgrading other facilities. Mr Sathien expressed confidence that the investment would help boost sales to 10 billion baht this year, up from 7.4 billion last year, and ensure that the company reaches its target of 20 billion baht. in sales in 2020. The company this year made an effort to add new stores in the central region and in a 250km radius from Ratchaburi province where its distribution centre is located. CJ Express is owned by the same stakeholders as Carabao Group, an energy drink maker, but it has separated the operations and management teams of the two units. Mr Sathien, who is also one of the founders of Carabao Group, acquired CJ Express from its former owner in Ratchaburi about four years ago after he perceived a low business opportunity in expanding energy drink production in the Thai market. Thailand’s energy drink market is 32 billion THB a year, but it has shown only slight growth over the past several years. Operating retail businesses helps the firm to manage product distribution efficiently, Mr Sathien said.

This function will be added in the fourth quarter.
The centre of the zone is considered a three kilometre radius from the Poolsuk community. Phittaya said he took the measure after a black dog bit local residents and foreigners. The dog died during quarantine and a laboratory test found it had rabies. Hua Hin Hospital reported that 15 people were bitten by dogs and received rabies vaccine. Article 20 of the Plague Act of Thailand in B.E. 2558 (2015) allows temporary zones to be declared to address the spread of rabies and is now in place until 7th September: From the northern part of the city to Wang Klai Kangwon Buddhist Temple; From the southern part of the city to Khao Phithak Community; From the eastern part of the city to the Gulf of Thailand; and From the western part of the city to Tan Diew Community. The centre of the zone is within a three kilometre radius from the Poolsuk community.
The declaration requires pet owners to follow measures to ensure public safety: Moving and/or transferring pet cats and dogs into and out of the above-mentioned areas is strictly prohibited unless there is a written statement from veterinarians or relevant authorities. If a dog or cats is found dead due to the infection or unknown causes; local authorities, police inspectors or veterinarians have to be immediately informed; and the owners are responsible for taking care of the animals’ body until the authorities reach the area. Moving the body is strictly prohibited. Owners of pet cats and dogs must follow all rules made by veterinarians. In addition, the Hua Hin Municipality is providing free vaccinations for all pet cats and dogs until 7th September at the municipal offices.
Health experts always recommend early medical attention after a dog bite has been suffered regardless of any suspicion of a rabies infection. The disease is preventable through timely vaccination. Rabies has a low prevalence in Thailand compared with many other southeast Asian countries. In the SEA Region, Thailand has registered a sharp decline in the number of human rabies deaths through mass dog vaccination campaigns, improved accessibility to human postexposure prophylaxis and an effective vaccine delivery system. Authentic Products Highlighting Thai Culture Sought By Chinese Tourists An increase in the number of Chinese tourists in recent years has benefited Thai retailers, especially those offering uniquely Thai products.
Chinese are the largest group of tourists, accounting for about 30% each year. Chinese spending on Thai products, ranging from fashion to electronics, has been an important part of the Thai economy.
Chinese Tourists Looking for products that highlight Thai culture According to a Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) survey, Chinese tourists allocate 41% of their traveling budget to shopping and 4% to food. The rest goes to transportation, entertainment, tour-guide fees and accommodations. Of the budget allocated to shopping, 63% of Chinese shoppers intend to spend on food and HUA HIN TODAY, September 2017
snacks, 62% on gifts and souvenirs, 51% on clothing, and 49% on cosmetics and personal-care items. Buying souvenirs and gifts for friends and families when traveling overseas is a Chinese tradition. Many Chinese tourists buy souvenirs and gifts inside supermarkets in shopping malls, as they usually offer more varieties. Mid-range fashion brands have also become increasingly popular among Chinese tourists, especially Thai fashion brands with a presence in the mainland. For example, the Thai bag retailer Naraya is popular among Chinese tourists. The handmade products’ emphasis on affordability is a unique selling point. Genuine luxury products are also benefiting from the trend as Chinese tourists can get value-added tax refunds, which make it more attractive to tourists. As well, Thai cosmetic products are popular among the Chinese. Beauty Buffet, a leading Thai cosmetic company, said aside from its administration strategy, the reason for its significant growth over the years was growing interest and positive feedback
from foreigners, particularly those from China, Hong Kong, and the Middle East. An important part of a tourist’s cultural experience in Thailand is food and beverages, with seafood and traditional Thai restaurants being the most popular. Although Chinese tourists currently spend 4% of their budget on food, it is a growing sector, as the government is trying to promote Thailand as a food destination. Many restaurants have added Chinese-language menus, while some have gone so far as hiring Chinese-speaking staff to take care of Chinese customers. King Power, the leading duty-free chain and majority share owner of AirAsia, has especially reaped the benefits from the boom in Chinese tourists over the past few years. The number of Chinese tourists has grown to become a large portion of its customer base, so much so that it is renovating retail space to offer uniquely Thai-branded products and herbal goods in response to the high demand. With TAT projecting the number of Chinese tourists will reach 9.5 million in 2017, an increase of 9% year-on-year; there
is still much room for growth for retailers in Thailand seeking to take advantage of the expanding customer demographics.
King Power at Phuket Airport, could Hua Hin Airport be next? Notably, the products or services of retailers who benefit the most from Chinese spending share certain attributes. They typically are niche products that highlight Thai culture. They offer good quality at affordable prices, giving tourists a sense of increased value for money. Lastly, the availability of such products or services is usually limited in China. These types of products create unique touristoriented products as they comprise a level of Thai authenticity that cannot be easily found in their home country. – Bangkok Post

Thailand earned nearly 70 awards in SmartTravelAsia.com ‘Best in Travel Poll’ 2017 edition with Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui and Hua Hin all being named among the ‘Top 10 Holiday Destinations’ for Asia

The effect of ransomware attacks on Microsoft’s older versions of Windows is starting to impact on Windows 10 with attacks such as WannaCry and Petrwrap being the most high profile.
Cybercriminals find older versions such as XP and Vista easy targets and have exploited vulnerabilities. A study by Spiceworks revealed that two thirds of businesses had now moved over to Windows 10 to reduce the threat. Speaking to ITPro, Peter Tsai, senior technology analyst at Spiceworks, said: “In recent months, widespread ransomware attacks such as WannaCry and Petrwrap have put businesses under pressure to upgrade unsupported operating systems, such as Windows XP and Vista, and move to more secure systems like Windows 10. “And while Windows XP is still running in some businesses, it’s evident that more companies are beginning to recognise the security risks and prioritise upgrades in order to better secure their networks.”
The cyber-attacks that took place earlier this year affected users in more than 150 countries and highlighted the risk, especially with the much-loved Windows XP. After the attacks, Microsoft warned all users to update their OS immediately to the latest version of the software. A statement from Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith said: “As cybercriminals become more sophisticated, there is simply no way for customers to protect themselves against threats unless they update their systems.” Mr Smith added: “We have seen vulnerabilities stored by the CIA show up on WikiLeaks, and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world. “An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the US military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen. “The governments of the world should treat this attack as a wake-up call.”
Land Windfall Tax Rate to be Determined
A draft bill on the land windfall tax is expected to go before Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong for approval this month. The applicable tax rate, which is flat, could be lower than the 5% ceiling, says the Fiscal Policy Office’s chief. Some people have proposed that a portion of revenue generated from the land windfall tax be directed to local administrative organisations, while the draft bill stated that the tax will be entirely contributed to the fund for basic transport infrastructure project development.
Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong Even though the draft bill will set the ceiling tax rate at 5%, the Finance Ministry can fix the applicable rate lower than the maximum, said Krisada Chinavicharana, director-general of the Finance Ministry’s think tank. He said the tax will not take a toll on property developers and those who reap a windfall from the inflated price from transport infrastructure development. A one-time tax will be applied to cases in which land ownership is transferred after a transport infrastructure project starts. Britain, France, Poland and Colombia have all imposed land windfall taxes.
Authorities to Crack Down on Red License Plates
The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has instructed owners of new vehicles with red license plates to register their vehicles within 30 days, in anticipation of a new law abolishing red license plates.
Thai Health Wants Thais to Eat More Vegetables The Thai Health Promotion Foundation has launched a project to encourage Thai people to eat more vegetables with an aim to make each Thai eats at least 400 grams of vegetables a day as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Dr. Pairote Saonuam, Director of Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Office of Thai Health, said that the foundation had set a target for Thai people to increase vegetable intake from 25.9 percent to 50 percent in the next four years. He said Thai Health would support the private sector to hold activities to increase public understanding and knowledge about the merits of vegetable consumption and to create environment that will encourage people in the offices to eat more vegetables and fruits.

The Council of the State has approved a new bill abolishing red license plates. The bill is now undergoing deliberation in the National Legislative Assembly. DLT Director-General Sanit Promwong confirmed that under the new law, all street-legal vehicles must be registered and red license plates will no longer be issued. Starting January 1st, 2018, new car owners must register their vehicles within 30 days. During a period of grace from October 1st to December 31st, 2017, vehicle registrations must be carried out within 60 days and owners are required to carry vehicle handbooks. All vehicles with red license plates must have their handbooks issued by the DLT. The DLT has coordinated with the Royal Thai Police in enforcing the new measure, as unregistered vehicles are subject to criminal charges of fraud.
People will also be taught how to grow their own vegetables and to prepare healthy food menu in offices, he added. Chanchida Ngarm-urairat, chief of a program to promote health among office workers through vegetable consumption, said that 777 employees of six private companies had joined the program. The participants were taught how to weigh vegetables, how much they should eat each day, the safety of vegetables and fruits, how to get rid of chemical residue in vegetables and fruits and how to check for chemical content in their blood. The program had opened a 21day course for volunteers among office workers to change their vegetable-eating lifestyle. A training course in chemical-free vegetable cultivation, vegetable cooking as well as fruit and vegetable preservation was organised for 33 model volunteers.
Violators will be subject to jail terms from six months to five years and a fine of up to 10,000 THB. 13 Foreign Victim of Hua Hin Bomb Revisiting City An Italian tourist who was injured in the bombing in Hua Hin last year has returned to remember the generosity of local residents and medical staff who helped him

He received a warm welcome from local tourism and administration officials as one of the eight foreign tourists wounded in the bombings in Hua Hin in August last year.
According to TAT’s local office, Mr Tazzioli chose to return to Hua Hin because he was impressed with the kind help and treatment he had received there. In addition to celebrating his birthday during the visit, he wanted to meet the medical staff at San Paulo Hospital, where he was treated for shrapnel wounds to his back. Hua Hin was among the targets bombed in several provinces in the lower part of the country on August 11th and 12th last year. Three people were killed and 31 others injured. Banks Taking Orders for King Rama IX Commemorative Coins
The Treasury Department has produced King Rama IX commemorative coins on the occasion of the royal cremation of the late king.
Those interested can now place their orders at 19 banks and their branches throughout the country, Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong said. Those placing their orders can pick up the coins from January 29th, 2018. The coins are produced in four denominations — 50,000 THB gold coin (99,999 coins available); 2,000 THB silver coin (399,999 available); 3,000 THB bronze coin (39,999 available); and, 100 THB cupronickel coin (39,999,999 available). The front side of each coin of all denominations features the image of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The other side of the coin features the royal crematorium with the cremation date October 26th, 2017.
Patchara Anuntasilpa, directorgeneral of the Treasury Department, said that the orders for the coins, except the bronze, can be placed at 19 banks and their branches from Aug 22 to Sept 30. Dual Track Train Project Linking Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Ready to Roll
Ambitious plans to develop a new railway line that will run along existing tracks between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan have been finalised.
Following a bidding exercise that was entered by 11 companies, the State Railway said that Italian-Thai Development Company has won the contract after their proposal of 5.8 billion THB was accepted. After final checks are made of the proposals, contracts are now expected to be signed that will mean the line can begin construction without further delays.

The work involves a track following the existing route for 84 kilometres. Two new railway bridges and 12 stations will be constructed. Yards for storage and commercial use will be constructed at Sam Roi Yot station and Thung Mamao station. Drainage work, pedestrian overpasses, a flyover and U-turn work also form part of the proposed construction. The track will be one metre gauge. The Ministry of Transport previously said the dual track railway linking Hua Hin district and Chumphon province will be completed in 2 years. According to Transport Permanent Secretary, Soitip Traisut, the planned construction of the railway has already been approved by EIA, which indicates that it will have little impact on the environment.

25-year-old Mareeya Poonlertlarp, a half-Thai, half-Swedish model, has been crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2017 at Siam Paragon Hall.
183cm tall, a postgraduate in marketing from the Stockholm Business School, is said to be fluent in four languages - Thai, Swedish, English and Mandarin. She won 1 million THB, a diamond tiara and a car, as well as the trophy. She is now set to represent Thailand at the international Miss Universe 2017 pageant in Las Vegas this coming November. First runner-up Supaporn Litiphruek received half a million THB, and joint second runners-up Suraphuen Artkongharn, Ratchanok Nawaset and Paweensuda Duuen each pocketed 150,000 THB. Chalita Suansane, Miss Universe Thailand 2016, was also on stage. Chalita finished in the top six in the global Miss Universe competition - Thailand’s greatest

The Bank of Thailand will issue the 20 THB, 50 THB, 100 THB, 500 THB, and 1000 THB banknotes this month in gratitude to H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The colours, sizes, and the portrait on the front side of commemorative banknotes are identical to the 16th series banknotes. The main element on the reverse side of each denomination depicts portraits of H.M. Supplementing Your Diet
Supplements or supplementary food has a name that describes its use. This is to supplement nutrition for your body when that nutrition or does not include all five food groups. 22 A Catholic Monument in Cha-Am: The St Theresa Prayer Hall
It’s one of the most unusual sights you are likely to come across in your local travels, presumably the legacy of a mission to spread the message of the Catholic Church in rural Thailand. But what of the history? We organised an English translation of a stone proclamation in Thai, to see if there were any clues. Here’s what we found: The land was purchased by the Very Reverend Father Surachai Chumsriphan and his wife on St Theresa Day (1st October) 1991. “On that day, Father Manas Chuabsamai baptized my wife and summoned Saint Theresa to be her guardian angel. In honour of God and Saint Theresa who always give us blessing, we had this prayer hall built with great belief in them. Here, people are allowed to practice meditation, pray to God by themselves or convene a seminar or meeting.” This is a quote from the opening day, though no date was described.
Today this religious building is a relic; a magnificent monument slowly decaying. However the symbols and religious murals of Catholicism remain as a glorious affirmation of the founders’ Christian faith.
One fresco shows the ‘garden of Eden’, complete with Adam and Eve, dinosaurs and elephants! Vibrant stained glass windows are intact, beaming with reds, golds and blues. The domed high ceilings are also resplendent with gold and red religious symbolism. This is would be an amazing sight in many parts of the world, but in Thailand, absolutely astounding.
On 1st May 2005, the building was handed over to the Diocese in Ratchaburi (with responsibility for Petchaburi Province), with a message from Father Manas Chuabsamai (John Bosco). It had then been administered for 11 years (1994). He is quoted as saying “All I wish is to see is that the Saint Theresa Prayer Hall will continue to serve as a spiritual sanctuary for anyone in search of God. Here, people can pray, meditate and improve their mind more profoundly. That’s all we know so far about this accidental ‘discovery’; we’d like to know more. If you can tell us about this monument to Christianity in Thailand, please let us know. Where?
The Prayer Hall is clearly unused with birds flying through the open areas, a broken tiled floor and ruined vestiges of religious worship, including a fallen alter and crumbling statues. However all is not lost. Many multilevel frescoes on the walls show painted scenes of the Christian message in remarkably good condition.
There is evidence that the Prayer Hall still gets a little care and attention with gardens and pathways being maintained. Your visit will be noted, please leave it the way you found it!
If you know the entrance to the Springfield Royal Country Club, it’s easy to find. Travelling on the bypass (Pranburi – Cha-Am) Highway North, about 10 kilometres before reaching Cha-Am, Route 101 is a main intersection with traffic lights and signs to the Golf Course heading west. The Course entrance is another 5 kilometres; then after a further 500 metres you’ll see the entrance on the left. A word of caution! On the balcony at the side of the building we were attacked by a swarm of wasps, which left some very painful memories; please be careful!
The Fishermen of Bang Sai Yoi
Bang Sai Yoi is a small community wedged between government land and the Mrigadayavan Palace to the south, condo and resort developments to the north around 10 kilometres south of Cha-Am. Fishing is the lifeblood of this community. This is recognised by a string of five man-made stone islands just off-shore providing shelter to the flotilla of small fishing boats. The central of these islands has a pier linking it to the foreshore to enable transport of the night’s catch back to shore. Last month the 200 metre long pier was given a concreted surface around 6 metres wide. This was a community project with the combined support of the Cha-Am municipality, a local cement company and two nearby resorts.

The total budget to complete this project was described as 150,000 THB. The Ban Bang Sai Yoi community is not sophisticated or developed although the Buddhist temple, surrounds and local school are an obvious source of pride. Beachside homes and other buildings remain simple and the fishing industry is the only sign of commercial activity without the usual scattering of seafood restaurants. Apart from providing benefits to the fishing industry with the more efficient management of the catch, this project was also described as the forefront of the development of the area for more public use as a tourist attraction so that visitors can see the local fishermen’s lifestyle and buy fresh fish, crabs and other seafood from the local fishing boats to increase the income of local people. It would seem that the simple life of the fishermen of Ban Sai Yoi is about to change so that foreign visitors are no longer a rarity and the implications of tourism will soon be realised.

28 2. Get some rest Driving while tired can be stressful – and dangerous. Getting a good night’s sleep before hitting the road is a good step towards staying calm and in charge on the road. It’s just as important to rest regularly along the way of your trip. Consider changing drivers if you are feeling tired or stressed.
Traffic jams, inconsiderate drivers, even driving in bad weather. Traveling in a variety of road and congestion situations can make you feel stressed. So how can you use emotional intelligence to respond to emotional incidents on the road or elsewhere? Here are some suggestions:
Driving in Bangkok – you know what to expect We’ve all experienced it. You’re enjoying a nice, peaceful drive on a sunny day. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, another car begins to tailgate you. Then, the driver flashes his lights and begins honking his horn. At the first opportunity, he overtakes you. How do you feel now? More important, what action will you take next? Unfortunately, most of us will handle situations like this the wrong way.
Pause. It’s easy to get caught up in emotion if someone cuts us off or does something impolite. Before you react, force yourself to stop for a few minutes (or even seconds). Think things through. Once you’ve paused, ask yourself the following questions: If I retaliate, what might the other person do in response? Is it worth it? How would those potential results affect me (or my family) in the future? How does this incident fit into the big picture? Will I really care about it next week, or next year? Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Once we’ve slowed things down, it’s often easier to relate to another person. Could it be that this person is simply having a bad day? Or maybe there are extenuating circumstances: Imagine the guy that just cut you off is actually trying to rush his pregnant wife to the hospital.
Angry and aggressive behaviours include purposefully tailgating, yelling or honking at another driver to show anger, and making “angry gestures.” But researchers further estimate that about 8 million U.S. drivers engaged in “extreme road rage,” which included purposefully ramming another vehicle or getting out of the car to confront another driver. Fortunately leaning on the horn is uncommon in Thailand but there are still too many examples when road rage has resulted in ugly incidents.
Putting it into practice. Knowing how to handle these situations is important to managing your stress levels and helps ensure you arrive safely at your destination. Getting emotionally worked up rarely leaves us feeling any better off – it just passes on the frustration to another driver and spreads the road rage.
3. Sound mind, sound ride Make your vehicle a setting that reminds you of one of the reasons why it’s awesome to drive – playing and hearing what you want. The right playlist or the right talk radio station can help fend off stress and frustration in a traffic jam. At a reasonable volume, this can help make the drive more pleasant and help you stay calm.
As You’re Driving 1. Drive smoothly
If burning fuel (and your money) is stressing you out as you sit idle in traffic, remember that smooth driving can help decrease fuel consumption. There’s no reason to rush five metres forward only to stop again. Accelerate and brake smoothly to in stop-start traffic help make your tank go further. 2. Give yourself some space
Tailgating is dangerous for everyone involved and a recipe for potential accidents. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one ahead. If you find yourself being tailgated, you might want to find a safe space to pull over and let the driver pass. Bad drivers are not worth your precious energy! 3. Drive and Let Drive
Decide in advance that today you will allow those we are anxiously trying to move into your lane to do so, rather than being competitive. It will cost you almost no time and it feels good when you receive a friendly wave rather than feeling stressed because of some sort of pointless duel.
Don’t honk or stare, or use rude hand gestures. Take a few deep breaths. Though you can’t control traffic or other drivers, you can control your own behavior. Getting into a conflict is ultimately self-defeating, as it will not get you out of the traffic faster. 4. Entertain the kids

Krungthep (city of angels), the ‘Big Mango’ or Bangkok, is by any standard a formidable metropolis. Its cultural events, shopping, glittering sights in the old city and the new and the busy life on the Chao Phraya River beckon to residents of Hua Hin. has gentrified to include a few boutique choices, and is now a colourful and vibrant part of Bangkok, where Thais come to join travellers at some of the best bars and clubs in town, as well as to take advantage of all the various shopping bargains.
The fact that the angels often have to wear gas masks as they fly through the daily pall of pollution seems an inescapable fact of life in cities of the world these days. But how is it best to tackle that city’s horrendous knotty traffic that ranks among the worse in the world? Public transport is one effective answer and we suggest here a couple of good ways to tackle Bangkok’s continual snarl.
Rising above the traffic
Sprinting into the city Crossing the Chao Phraya, the train is soon at the Bangsue station, where you can get off to better access the southern half of the sprawling city. Bus number 70 for example will take you from there to Sanam Luang, the central park near the river in the old city, where ceremonial buildings are nearly completed for the approaching royal cremation.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) comes to the rescue, offering a daily express train link from Hua Hin right to the heart of the big city. The three-carriage air-conditioned Sprinter, starting in Surat Thani in the south, comes past our railway station with its beautiful Thai wooden architecture at 4 pm each day. It delivers you to Bangkok’s central station at around 7.45 pm. While the SRT is at last replacing some of its ancient trains with new Chinamade carriages and engines, the trusty old Sprinters are still, well, old. But it’s cool and comfortable inside, and the fare remains a friendly 410 THB for the three and a half hour speedy trip to Hua Lumphong central station.
Famed Khaosan Road backpacker village, the home of cheap accommodation, is nearby. A taxi ride (all metered) to there from the Bangsue station should cost you less than 100 THB. Khao San Road
Sombat undercuts the train fare, offering the trip on its VIP luxury coach for 241 THB. These coaches are very comfortable and take only 24 passengers at a time who are seated three across, with the single line of comfortable sofa seats on one side and the double seats on the other.
Nightlife at Khaosan Road From the Sprinter, just walk down to Bang Sue underground (MRT) station. This is one stop before to the end of the excellent Toa Pun-Hoa Lumpong MRT service that saves you much time by tunnelling under the city’s congestion. It’s best to buy reusable MRT and Rabbit BTS cards, that can be topped up when needed, to bypass the ticketing queues.
Chao Phraya River welcomes you on the bus
the Hua Hin bus station on Phetchakasim Road to its own convenient Vibhavadi station near Morchit and Jatujak market in Bangkok, and not far from the Bangsue rail station.
In just over a half hour, the MRT reaches Hua Lumpong, letting you off at Sukhumvit and Sathorn stations as needed, where you can surface to connect with the BTS sky train to reach your hotel in those parts of town. Some four months ago a new transport service has also become available. The Sombat Tour coach service started its welcomed VIP bus service from
The VIP way You are in for a cool trip in more ways than one, as the air-con tends to be arctic. The bus drives at a sedate 80-90 kilometres per hour all the way, and it takes 3-4 hours to reach Bangkok, depending on the city traffic. It’s like cruising along in a comfortable armchair, and you can enjoy views of provincial centres without the worry of driving through them. Conveniently, before arriving at Sombat’s own dedicated coach terminal, the bus can drop you off at the Morchit BTS Skytrain station and nearby Jatujak MRT station, from where you can zoom freely either above or below the congestion.
Riding Green to Khao Tao
There is a shining new bicycle standing in your garage, ready for that much-needed exercise that you have been postponing. So where might you use it? The current Royal preference for healthy bike-riding has created many welcomed new and safer cycling tracks, including around the big moated Dusit Royal Palace in Bangkok. Locally, you can now ride south from Hua Hin Township all the way to the turn-off to Ban Khao Tao, some 7 kilometres on.

First take Phetchakasim Road (National Highway 4) after the railway overpass past Tesco Lotus on the left, Patravadi School, and the office of Hua Hin Today and Soi 116 on your right to where a dedicated bicycle track branches off from the highway.
Take your time and cruise past the Kasetsart Veterinary Teaching Hospital on the left. A kilometre or two further up the road, on the right-hand side of highway, is the new Rajabhakti Park, where the dominating statues of 7 previous Kings stand.
Ahead, a real treat for bike-riders that has been nicely prepared for you. The new super cycle way is paved in bitumen with a dividing line in the centre and wide enough for bicycles to pass each other
Cross the busy highway carefully and cycle in to admire the colossal bronze sculptures, each towering around 14 metres high against forested hills in the background.

The new track takes you alongside the busy major Highway 4 to Pranburi and further south, all with a very pleasant green growing border on your left side to enjoy.
Back on the cycle superhighway, the Suan Son Pradipat military recreation beach comes up next, where you may wish to break your energetic journey for lunch by turning left and riding down to the shady sand. Cars pay a 20 THB entry fee to the army guard at the gate but bikers are free.

Refreshed now, you pedal on south to the turn-off to Ban Khao Tao some 7 kilometres from the start of Soi 116. Follow the cycling track left until it lets you back on the road heading to the beach-side village.
Here you can park the bike and stroll on the waterside cement track that circles the big lake. Or else find a shady place to sit to rest and enjoy the view of the green turtle hump of Khao Tao rising from the sea in the distance.

There is of course the pleasant return trip, yet to be cycled.
About a kilometre from the turnoff from Highway 4 is the big Khao Tao waterworks reservoir that can be called your destination for this first valiant exercise effort.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has hosted the Thailand Golf Travel Mart (TGTM) 2017 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand where golf tour operators and buyers from key international markets met with suppliers and golf course owners from across Thailand. The session had about 135 people attending. TGTM 2017 showcased Thailand as a world-class golf destination, with its amazing courses that show beautiful scenery while

The opening match of the competition featured a mixed celebrity team which included show business stars as well as a number of Resort General Managers. No one seemed to know the final score but it was widely accepted that is would be most unwise for the celebs to claim victory over a team with the name ‘Gov’ on their playing strip, especially at an Army base! We recognised the GMs from the Amari (Phanuphan Buasuang), the Veranda (Jamnong Bootsong) and the Sheraton (Bruce Dupuis) amongst the celebrity team players. Vason Kittikul also took his place in the team as the keeper. He is the President of the Thai Hotels Association Western Chapter as well as the Long Beach Hotel ChaAm GM and host of the event. It’s always wise not to challenge anyone with ‘Gov’ on his shirt! Canadian national Bruce Dupouis commented that he felt much more comfortable on ice due to ice hockey experience. However the Sheraton supporters who gave him credit for a goal-assist. Our apologies to others who we have not named but it was difficult to identify some of the celebrities in their unfamiliar mode of dress. We can also name Everson Pranburi (Alan Thomas) and Hilton Hua Hin (Denis Richter) GMs who were providing vocal support to their respective teams from the VIP box after successfully feigning injury; perhaps to avoid potential humiliation on the field. The more serious matches between the hotel teams now continue until the 7th September at the King Rama VI Army Camp Stadium with the closing ceremony, trophy presentations and charity donations at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa. Winning the Federation Cup is certainly a matter of pride with some bragging rights to the winning hotel. They may also have to undergo some scrutiny just in case any recent ‘casual’ employees also play for the Hua Hin City Football Club! However this is another example of the friendly spirit between the region’s hotels as an elaborate and spectacular good old-fashioned team building exercise.

From playing against other football academies to taking up European Football Scholarships; the youth of Hua Hin have many opportunities to be involved in the ‘world game’ at the Dusit Thani Hua Hin Soccer Academy.

The Academy is extremely fortunate to be the only club to have access to the immaculate grass football pitches in front of this prestigious hotel.
All ages and levels of expertise can enjoy the Dusi Thani grass pitches from pre-schoolers to under 18.
Some students have gone on to earn trials with major European clubs such as RSC Anderlecht. After a year training with the Academy, Larrs Hinrichs returned to Germany where he was immediately signed by OSC Bremerhaven and will soon be playing for one of their academy’s youth teams. The Academy has a long standing partnership with J&S International Football Management which represents some of the best international players in the modern game. Founder Patrick de Kloster has visited on numerous occasions. He has also arranged for prospects from the academy to have trials with Belgian Premier League champions RSC Anderlecht. Steve Barbé is the Director / Head Coach who has retired after a career which included over 100 appearances in the Belgian top division and playing in major international competitions such as the UEFA Cup. He also had a brief spell at Charlton Athletic and is a licensed, qualified coach under the Belgian FA. In July a group of parents and coaches from the travelled to Pala U Noi with the community organisation Jungle Aid to conduct a coaching clinic for the children and hand out some kits. A group of between almost 20 kids took part in a coaching session followed by a match and some shooting practice. Head Coach Steve said, “These children play on one of the worst pitches you will ever see but it hasn’t diminished their enthusiasm for the game. I hope this will be the first of many coaching clinics we put on in this community.” Other projects include a scholarship program which allows less fortunate local children to join the Academy. The 2017/18 MOL League season starts this month with the Academy competing alongside some of the top
academies in the wider region. Teams are entered at Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 15 levels with every player having an opportunity to compete in the league.

42 10 ‘Gimme Golf’ – The Putt You Will Never Miss Succinctly, a ‘gimme’ is a putt so short golfers consider it unmissable, so if conceded by another player, it can be picked up and counted as a holed putt. The word means “give me,” as in “give me this one?” “The least thing upset him on the links. He missed short putts because of the uproar of butterflies in the adjoining meadows.” P.G. Wodehouse The unofficial rule for the length of a gimme is “inside the leather” - that is, if a ball is closer to the hole than the distance from your putter head to putter grip when laid flat on the green. However the reality is that formal measurements are rarely made as this removes one of the main aims; that is to speed-up play. Some golfers abuse the practice by imagining longer and longer putts as unmissable. It’s another one of those golfing ‘rules’ which can be sabotaged and must rely on individual integrity.
But very importantly this is an unofficial agreement by recreational golfers. In STROKE PLAY (including Stableford), a gimme has no place within the Rules of Golf. There are no circumstances, when a gimme can be used in a competition played under the official Rules of Golf or a round posted for handicap.
This begs the question; what length of putt is unmissable? The real answer is none; we’ve all seen a player casually ‘waving’ a putter at a ball inches from the hole with the ball being almost or completely missed and an extra stroke incurred.

In MATCH PLAY, either player may formally concede a stroke, a hole, or the entire match at any time, and this may not be refused or withdrawn. This is the only ‘gimme’ available in the Rules.
That is usually recognised as a concession signal but was ruled otherwise with no verbal exchange. The lesson is that words such as “that’s a give”, “take it” or “that’s in” must be heard before the ball is picked up.

‘Inside the leather’ is the usual gimme length If your recreational group decides to accept gimmes, you might still choose to take the putts so that a handicap adjustment can be made and you can boast about real pars, real birdies or better. Many golf instructors consider gimmes counterproductive to good putting, suggesting that you need to see and hear that ball drop into the cup to build confidence and learn how to avoid the putting ‘yips’!
Golf in Thailand adds another twist. It’s common to find a white circular line marked around the hole about the usual gimme length. This does not suggest that the Rules of Golf have been overruled, that’s not possible. Caddies may also urge players to take a gimme, or in the local parlance “Give, Give, Give!” However it’s only your playing partner, not the caddie that can make the offer. In concept, the gimme putt is supposed to add to golf’s sportsmanship. Often it’s anything but, as evidenced at international match play level when Norway’s Suzann Pettersen refused to concede a putt after walking off the green in the 2015 Solheim Cup.
Tears after ‘gimme confusion’ at the 2015 Solheim Cup If using the gimme formula is causing disharmony in your social group it may be better to go back to the ‘real rules’ to stay friends. Some other etiquette considerations are: DON’T: Endlessly fumble in your pocket praying your opponent will cave-in and give it to you. DON’T: Apologise for making your opponent putt. It comes off as insincere, especially if they miss. DON’T: Take it personally when an opponent makes you putt, just go ahead and sink it! DO: Be liberal with gimmes on the front 9, conservative on the back. This sets an affable tone for the round, but increases the pressure in a tight finish. Some golfers think about how their generosity may affect an important relationship with their playing partner. Being kind-hearted to your father-in-law is one thing; however nothing screams ‘brown-nosing’ like conceding seven-foot downhill putts to the boss!

Playing a Plugged Ball from the Bunker
We have all encountered the dreaded plugged ball in the bunker. Here is a simple way of getting the ball back in play. The setup is similar to a normal bunker shot – shoulder-width stance, feet dug in for balance, ball played ahead of centre in the stance. The club head will enter the sand at a point that corresponds to the dead centre of your stance - picture 1. Keep the club face square; not open like standard bunker shots. Remember to align your feet and hips only slightly left of target, shoulders square to the target and shift your weight more to your left side ( for a right handed golfer) – picture 2. Grip down the club for control and grip really tightly (grip pressure of 9 out of 10). This will help prevent the club from twisting and decelerating quickly as goes deeply into the sand. Now make a full swing and make sure that the club is traveling in a downward motion through the sand, there will be little or no follow through. Remember, there will be very little spin on the golf ball and you might have to accept the ball will roll past the pin. Don’t get too cute trying to finish pin high as you need to be very aggressive to get the ball out. The word “pizza” was first documented in 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. While pizza has been eaten in Italy for centuries, the introduction of tomatoes to Italian cuisine in the 18th and early 19th centuries finally gave us the true modern Italian pizza. “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore”.

2 46 A Beginners Guide to the Secrets of Thai Street Kitchens
As a traveller to Thailand, you are often confronted with a multitude of food options when you are in markets or around the streets; often it is quite challenging. We have asked Feast Thailand’s General Manager, Leigh Higgins, to explain about one integral part of Thai Street Food culture. One of the most popular street kitchens or vendors is the Dtam Sang vendor. These guys can whip you up a fantastic meal in an instant, from a repertoire often exceeding 100 dishes. The name Dtam Sang (sounds like dum sung) means ‘made to order’.

Their main aim is to make you something you are going to love. You can recognise a Dtam Sang vendor very easily, as they have all of their ingredients on show. Proteins like shellfish, meat, seafood or tofu are normally on ice to keep them fresh, with a huge variety of vegetables also on display. There are usually one or two large woks, with burners

too much red, which may mean it’s spicy; perhaps the English translation does not sound appetizing. Just remember that these cooks can cook much, much more than what is on their menu; whatever you desire. Next time you are at a Dtam Sang vendor, ask yourself the following five questions: What do I feel like? A stir fry or curry, a salad, a soup or something deep fried What protein do I want? Fish, beef, squid, prawns, tofu, pork, shellfish or chicken Do I want vegetables or herbs? Onion, tomato, cabbage, morning glory, coriander, Chinese celery Do I want carbs with the dish? Rice or noodles What sauce do I want, if any? Oyster sauce, fish sauce, chicken stock, coconut milk or cream What about the language barrier, I hear you ask; how do I order? Don’t let this stop you. These cooks are ready to please, so pointing to what you want is definitely OK. What if I don’t want it hot, is your next question? Commit these two words to memory - Mai Phet; not spicy! The best tip for eating street food is to order it freshly cooked, making Dtam Sang one of the best options on the streets. Often people worry about the protein and vegetables on ice; is it fresh? The answer is, yes it is. These vendors set up just before meal times and the food immediately goes on display on ice, with only a small amount of protein displayed.
This means it is kept cool and fresh. Popular proteins sell out quickly, so they will not be on display long enough to go bad.

The event started with a fashion show led by Dr. Kanthicha Chimsiri, Miss International 2016. Then 15 beauty contestants wore Thai costume traditional followed by evening gowns. The judges then chose the three finalists followed by the winner, Mrs. Trakranta Noppawong, as the first Mrs Noble of Thailand. Mrs. Trakranta is a business woman and the mother of two cute sons. As Mrs Noble Queen Thailand, she will represent Thailand at the Mrs Noble International 2017 contest in Myanmar this September. She is now preparing to perform Thai traditional dancing for the Myanmar contest with no language issues as she can communicate in English.

11 55 Northern Thailand : A Foodies Guide If you have travelled and eaten Thai food in the northern region of Thailand, you will have experienced how good the flavours of this region are. Outside of this region, it is much more difficult to find authentic northern food so where to find it in Hua Hin? Notable for its lack of extreme spice, northern Thai food is the food of the lush green valleys and cool, forested mountains of the Thai highlands. The former Lanna Kingdom was once the ruler of this northern region. It was also home to the majority of the ethnic groups of Thailand. Its food is often extremely seasonal in nature. Many northern Thai dishes share their origins with the neighbouring Shan State in Burma, northern Laos and also with Yunnan Province in China.

Head for Wanphen Khao Soi, just opposite the Klai Kangwon Palace. There is no English sign out the front and the menu is in Thai. Having said that, the northern flavours are fantastic, authentic and right up there with the best in town. Another delicious dish Khun Wanphen serves is Gaeng Hang Lae. This is a rich jungle curry made without coconut milk. It is not overly spicy, but seriously delicious. There are many other northern dishes on display for you to choose from, so you will not regret seeking this place out.
Sticky Rice (Khao Niaw) is traditionally eaten rather than normal steamed Jasmine Rice (Khao Suay). You will rarely find the addition of coconut milk or cream, with curries and other dishes relying more on dried spices for flavour. The use of chilli is not as prevalent in the north, as compared to the south.
The most well-known northern dish is Khao Soi (Chiang Mai Noodles). This is Thailand’s version of Laksa. Its rich broth is

It is a must try for lovers of sausages. During the day, there is a street vendor at the Chat Chai morning market who has Sai Ua grilling fresh; otherwise head to Cicada Market on the weekend where there is a vendor doing excellent northern food.
Does Thai Spaghetti Bolognese sound like something you’d like? Then make sure to ask for Nam Prik Ong. It is usually served with Khanom Jiin, fermented fresh rice noodles, and looks exactly like the Italian version, sans the Parmesan cheese. Across the canal you will find the serene courtyard setting of Khrua Araya. This hidden gem is tucked away, making it difficult to find. It does, however, serve up a really tasty version of Nam Prik Ong. The large earthenware pots lined up in a row also contain other sauces to try with your Khanom Jiin. A northern relish, which is quite a taste sensation, is Nam Prik Noom. It is made from roasted young green chillies and served with either crispy pork skin or vegetables. It may look spicy, but is generally mild, with the sharp tang of green chilli. At evening time, the local markets at either Phae Mai or Dinosaur have a vendor there selling Nam Prik Noom and other northern dishes.

12 56 Lessons from a Mediterranean Sailing Star
After a sailing lifestyle based on the Spanish Mediterranean coast at Valencia, young yachting star Eva Gil Talay has surfaced in Hua Hin to help Club Members at the Sailing Club Hua Hin learn all about Opti and Laser sailing. This is also a chance for her to recharge the batteries and recuperate after being injured when her bicycle was struck by a motor vehicle back home and her sailing career put on hold after suffering a broken arm from that traumatic event in August last year. Although a mere 19 years of age, Eva has an impressive record in Optimist, Laser and 470. She has been on the podium in 12 Spanish championships, and top 15 in two European Championships, as well as competing in five World Cups. After her accident, Eva decided that she was in need of a sabbatical and is now enjoying her ‘bus man’s’ holiday.
Eva can see a future for a sailing culture to emerge locally with our favorable ocean and weather conditions. Eva has a family which has long embraced that culture and commenced sailing almost as soon as she could walk.
She had offers to sail in Thailand but these offers were to become some sort of ‘sailing hostess’, rather than to take on a tutoring role for aspiring sailors, young and old, and that what Richard Vine was offering.

Family sailing trips around the Mediterranean were a way of life which certainly influenced her adventurous spirit and longing to see the world. This is Eva’s second trip to Thailand and the chances are she will be back to add to the development of a sailing culture here. Eva’s bubbly personality and confident approach, apart from her sailing credentials, make her a great sailing tutor. We heard one young student also talking about how pretty she is; but that’s just a bonus!
