2 Hua Hin and Cha-am is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. The resort town is estimated to generate around 45 tonnes of food and plastic waste every day. Businesses such as resorts and hotels may need to consider managing and reducing food waste and rerouting usable resources to those in need. ‘Table to Farm’ is a food waste reduction program for hotels to achieve this goal. Founder of the Table to Farm program, Kulanard Kanathanavanich, says that the program consists of 3 stages: 1. Food waste reduction within Food and Beverages Departments by tracking waste and setting targets. 3. Sorting scraps and food trimmings to provide to local livestock farms in need
2. Managing and rerouting unused ingredients and prepared foods to those in need.
The Program works with local nearby community schools in need, setting up distribution points for school collections
HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
The program also educates local farmers on best practices for feed management and safety. The program aims to foster a sense of care and responsibility by organising activities for staff to interact with program beneficiaries to show that their actions have tremendous impact. Kulanard Kanathanavanich, who also serves as Executive Director of Regent Cha-am Hospitality School (RHS) in Regent Beach, says that food waste reduction and management should be emphasised within hospitality institutions for both existing and new staff. “We are also teaching these conservation methods to our students at
RHS so that new generations of working professionals can be more aware and do their part to minimise food waste” Not only does food waste contribute to a tremendous waste of resources such as water, land and money, green house gases are produced such as methane and carbon dioxide. “With proper sorting and management, food waste can be reduced and put to better use for those in need. The resources required are minimal and great success can be achieved through many small scale actions. If each individual contributes, together we can make a huge difference.” The Table to Farm program hopes to show that not only can food waste reduction initiatives improve a hotel’s profitability; it can also create a huge community impact. Individual hotels have the power to make changes and create positive impact for the industry. The program’s approach has been officially shared with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, President of the Hotels Association of West Thailand and President of the Hotels Association of Hua Hin and Cha-Am. The message is now being passed-on and discussed with other operators.
3 Content 4 Cover Story I prefer to call this time of the year the ‘quiet season’. Not the ‘low season’, the ’rainy season’ or any other negative title; it’s just quiet. Neither is this the ‘dull season’, with festivals aplenty whether they involve the fine food and dining that makes Hua Hin such a special destination or sporting events such as our current Golf Festival. Some of us really enjoy this time of the year; especially as our region is the driest in Thailand and grey skies aren’t a deterrent to enjoy what’s happening around town. However quiet isn’t what our local businesses want to experience; so why is Hua Hin so quiet? Despite recent announcements on an expansion of the airport, Hua Hin still suffers from the lack of both international and domestic flights. Chiang Mai now has eight international and eight domestic flights available but with Hua Hin having just one flight available (to Kuala Lumpur) is one obvious deficiency. To ‘hide your light under a bushel’ simply means that you have hidden away your talent, gifts, abilities, and not promoted them in a way that others can see. That’s another reason for the quiet season; ‘Brand Hua Hin’ is yet to emerge on the world stage. Of course many of Hua Hin’s visitors are those escaping the European winter and they will soon return. After a scorching hot European summer, Thailand’s warm weather may come as a relief as these ‘snow birds’ return to their ‘home away from home’; we’re ready to welcome them back! 4 Saphan Pla - Walking Street on the Water
Saphan Pla is Hua Hin’s main fishing pier. It has now been developed as a promenade for a very pleasant evening stroll out to sea for a taste of market food, entertainment, to enjoy cool breezes and over-the-ocean vistas of the coastline.
The pier is now welcoming visitors every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening from sunset. However as a real working facility for the Hua Hin fishing industry, there will be occasions when a large fishing boat needing to offload a catch will restrict access. Another disruption will follow should there be severe weather as visitor safety is of prime importance. Market stalls follow the length of the pier with smiling owners cooking fresh morsels for passersby. There’s plenty of room for everyone with one side reserved for wooden seating or some visitors just squat on the raised concrete side. Take care of the drop to waters below; perhaps some
strategically placed floatation devices would be worth having on hand just in case! Don’t be deterred if you find Thai food a little daunting with a smattering of stalls catering for western tastes with burgers, kebabs and barbecue options available. However this is the best place to try authentic Thai food that’s a bit unusual and of course sea food galore. A portion is likely to cost only 30 - 50 THB. At the end of the pier you may prefer to sit at a table or even a deck chair to relax and enjoy the entertainment from a musical ensemble or a Thai dancing troupe; but not karaoke!
AirAsia Introduces Chiang Mai-Hanoi Flights
Small fishing boats are on hand for visitors to experience a short trip on calm seas. The fishermen are all trying to make a good impression with their boats cleanedup and proudly flying brand new Thailand flags. Life jackets are compulsory with the supervision of marine authorities to ensure a safe cruise.
AirAsia is launching 4 direct flights a week from Chiang Mai-Hanoi starting on 28th October, driving Chiang Mai towards becoming an international flight hub by bringing its network to 8 routes.
Ankle-deep floodwaters overran central markets in Phetchaburi city last month, as officials scrambled to issue nationwide flood warnings in other provinces.
D ow n tow n P h e tc h a b u r i wa s underwater in parts however this appears to be manageable. “Over the past month, we tried to control the water volume, but the situation has changed now. There’s more water, and all sectors are working to drain it to the sea,” said Nuttawut Phetphorahomsorn, Deputy Phetchaburi Governor. “I think we can handle the levels in the city. There might be flooding, but it won’t take long to bring it down.” The Kaeng Krachan Dam, 200 k i l o m e t re s s o u t h o f B a n g ko k i n HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
Phetchaburi, hit capacity earlier last month and officials there have urged residents to remain vigilant. The current provincial flooding is from both the dam and overflow from the Phetchaburi River, said Samrerng Saengphuwong of the Office of National Water Resources. Meanwhile the Pranburi dam still has enough capacity to receive water says Mr. Pairoj Kamton the dam Director of Operation and Maintenance. Relentless heavy rains have resulted in a huge runoff flowing into Pranburi dam which is the biggest dam in the province. The run-off has been about 4-5 million cu/m per day from the midle of July. This has resulted in a water retention of 316 million cu/m however with the dam capacity of 391 million cu/m this was around 80.9 % . There is a discharge to canals of 8.3 million cu/m per day as well as the production of water for Hua Hin and the Pranburi district. This means there is unlikely to be flooding from a dam overflow for Hua Hin residents as the Pranburi dam has enough capacity to receive more water unless very heavy rainfall occurs.
When : Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 PM to 10 PM. Recommended for : Visit the pier as an evening family excursion or a romantic alternative for couples escaping the hustle and bustle of downtown Hua Hin. Cost : No entry costs with many food options at market prices. A 30 minute fishing boat ride is around 300 THB. Comments : This venue is non-smoking and alcohol free; but unfortunately not plastic free. Rubbish disposal must be in the bins provided; plastic bags and polystyrene containers are in abundance; please don’t let them end up in the ocean. Facebook : www.facebook.com/ SaphanplaHuahin
Saphan Pla presents the best of what Hua Hin has to offer. It’s about the ocean and beach with a laid back ambience for all the family and last but not least sensational food. Taking a ‘walk on water’ along the pier is now a ‘must do’ for every weekend visitor as a most authentic Hua Hin experience. Where : Near the ocean end of Soi 55 in central Hua Hin. Parking, especially for cars, is limited. It may be best to park elsewhere and take a tuk tuk.

6 Walter Camenisch; Creator of the ‘Manora Family’
There’s a large signboard on display as you enter the Manora Company offices showing Managing Director Walter Camenisch, employees and his own family all described as members of the Manora family. The family theme comes through loud and strong when considering the Manora business operations and meeting with MD Walter. After commencing the business on 22nd July 1998, the company now has around 40 fulltime ‘family members’ who keep the Manora Villages running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. It’s not unusual for the foreign operators of businesses in Thailand to have difficulty securing the loyalty of Thai staff. That’s not an issue for Walter with a respectful approach and treating them as his own family. It’s certainly not the ‘master and servant’ approach adopted by some. Attending the 20th anniversary of his business revealed a display of affection and enthusiasm by staff and contractors as well as clients past and present joining the celebrations.
Walter is the highest profile member of the Manora family joining activities such as the ‘Khao Tao Clean Up Day’ to keep the community clean and green, the Manora Village Golf Day and Loy Krathong to introduce Manora residents to Thai culture. He doesn’t need to avoid or ignore any concerns of the residents; they are few and far between and managed with renowned Swiss hospitality and efficiency. Walter is a considered and thoughtful Swiss national with a twinkle in his eye. His background before moving with his Thai wife Phitsamai and family to Hua Hin some 30 years ago, followed university studies in linguistics, the Arts and a short career as a teacher. That move wasn’t always plain sailing. With little more than personal luggage and minimal financial resources, he needed
to ride the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990’s before astute land purchases, management acumen and being in the ‘right place at the right time’ led to the success of the three stages of the Manora development with a total of 99 luxury villas completed. That’s a deliberate number in recognition of the significance of the number 9 to the Thai people’s reverence to the late King Rama IX. The name ‘Manora’ is also a reference to the Thai culture that Walter enjoys and respects. “Pra Suthon - Manora” is a famous epic love story as the tale of ‘Kinnaree Manora’, a goddess in Thai mythology who appeared as half woman half swan and could fly or shed her wings to assume human form as she pleased. Walter is an optimist about the future of Hua Hin with the Thai royal heritage being just one of the attractions.
HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
One insight Walter offered was how European visitors from a county with a royal history understand the importance of this heritage and feel ‘at home’ sharing these values. He believes that offering security and attention to matters such as health and safety but with the opportunity to experience the culture of Thailand is the key to the appeal of Hua Hin. Walter says that the development of Hua Hin now means that every service and shopping need is available with further infrastructure development and rapid transport links soon to complete the picture. The areas where improvements are required are traffic management, the poor conditions of secondary roads and water drainage. With effective marketing he believes that it is a matter of time before Hua Hin takes the next step to become Thailand’s premier destination for tourists and new residents. Completion of the Manora 3 village in December 2017 and successful property sales means that it’s now time for Walter to reflect, consider future development opportunities, but also time to re-launch the Manora Real Estate arm of the business. Walter is justifiably proud that his personal values and goals have become a part of the company culture with customers treated with respect, honesty and integrity to build an unrivalled reputation in the area of real estate and property development. Becoming a member of the Manora family will always a rewarding experience. About Manora Village www.manoravillage.com About Manora Properties www.manoraproperty.com

8 BMW Builds X5 in Thailand to Counteract U.S. - China Tariffs BMW said it is producing between 10,000 and 20,000 X5 sports utility vehicles in Thailand as a way to supply Chinese customers, now that imported vehicles from the United States face a 40% tariff.
In spring 2016, BMW started building the X5 in Thailand and this plant is now capable of making a “significant portion” of the vehicles that would otherwise have been exported from its plant in South Carolina, to China. “This is one action to counteract,” Chief Executive Harald Krueger said in discussing the company’s second-quarter results. – Reuters
Harley-Davidson Motorcycles in Thailand
US President Trump has threatened the iconic motorcycle company Harley-Davidson with severe taxes and predicted a public revolt that he said would eventually put the 115-year-old firm out of business, blasting the Wisconsin company for a plan to move some operations outside the United States.

The three new hot rod baggers take the base level models and elevate them with a current custom styling statement that is sinister in design and dark in its finishes. They let you pass faster, stop quicker, take curves tighter, and see and be seen better. Paul James, Manager of Product Portfolio, HarleyDavidson® said, “Our new custom baggers are the most aggressive, on-trend touring bikes in the market and our owners love to roll up to their favorite hangouts and show off. These new hot rod baggers are the epitome of capable touring bikes that look cool, and ride better than ever.”
Harley-Davidson had long planned to open a new plant in Thailand, a decision that predated the trade war between Trump and the leaders of a number of other countries. But the firm said It was shifting more production overseas specifically to blunt the impact of the tariffs imposed by Europe.

The World Mosquito Program Early Success in Eliminating Dengue Fever
Last month’s report from ABC Australia has described a project in Indonesia showing early signs of success in eradicating one of the world’s most debilitating viruses — dengue fever.
Transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, dengue fever is active in more than 100 countries worldwide, infecting 400 million people every year and killing 25,000. But scientists from the Eliminate Dengue Fever program in Indonesia believe the virus may have met its match. With technology exported from Melbourne’s Monash University, mosquitos in Yogyakarta have been infected with bacteria called Wolbachia, which renders the insects incapable of carrying and transmitting dengue fever. So far the Yogyakarta team has released 6 million Wolbachia infected mosquitos, effectively breeding the disease carrying population out of existence. Once mosquitoes with Wolbachia are released, they breed with wild mosquitoes. Over time, the majority of mosquitoes carry Wolbachia. These mosquitoes have a reduced ability to transmit viruses to people. Wolbachia naturally occurs in up to 60% of all insect species. However, it is not found in the Aedes Aegypti mosquito “Confident? Of course I’m confident, because the potential of this project is massive,” entomologist Warsito Tantowijoyo said. “In areas where the Wolbachia bacteria have been established, we found that there haven’t been any reported cases of local virus transmission,” Mr Warsito added. “All of the evidence is pointing towards success,” said Professor Cameron Simmons, director of Impact Assessment
at the World Mosquito Program. The most common methods of controlling dengue fever, such as fumigation, are only temporary and vaccines are considered too expensive in developing countries, where the virus is most prevalent. The advantage of the Wolbachia bacteria is that, once established in the mosquito population, it’s a permanent fix.
The World Mosquito Program, known locally as Eliminate Dengue Yogyakarta, works with the community to grow and release mosquitoes with Wolbachia. The World Mosquito Program is currently operating in 12 countries around the world – including Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, Kiribati, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Mexico. “The demand is large. We are continually being approached by disease affected countries; our challenge is to keep up with that demand,” said Professor Simmons. The involvement of Thailand, one of the countries most affected by Dengue Fever is not described in the official World Mosquito Program website www. worldmosquitoprogram.org or related sources of information.

Michelin Guide Set to Cover Phuket
The Michelin guide to Thailand’s best restaurants will go beyond Bangkok to the southern tourism locations of Phuket and Phang Nga by year’s end, part of the country’s efforts to keep attracting visitors.

Segsarn Trai-Ukos, Country Director of Michelin Siam Co., Ltd. and Secretary General of Michelin East Asia and Australia, revealed that the extension of The MICHELIN Guide’s reach to Phuket and Phang-nga is part of Michelin Group’s commitment to contribute to the prestige of local Thai gastronomy and hospitality scenes on a worldwide scale, and make travel more enjoyable for everyone – in line with Michelin’s corporate slogan: “A Better Way Forward”. The expanded guide will be published in November, according to the Thai unit of the French tiremaker and publisher and will be available in a bilingual edition (Thai and English), in both print and digital versions. The review can boost tourism revenue by highlighting the different cuisines HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
available, Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said in an interview. “Gastronomy is Thailand’s strength,” Yuthasak said, adding the goal is to cover the whole country by 2021 under a five-year agreement with Michelin. A debut Michelin guide was rolled out last year for Bangkok, long a food-lover’s paradise. Indian restaurant Gaggan was among three that won two stars in the review, but none of those assessed achieved the coveted top accolade of three stars. Yuthasak said Michelin’s anonymous restaurant reviewers have been conducting inspections in the south since April. No plans for a further expansion to Hua Hin have been announced.
Apasra Hongsakula, who became the first Thai woman to win Miss Universe in 1965, also attended the press event, along with Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh NelPeters and Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova, the Canadian winner who has become a businesswoman in Thailand since she was crowned. Considering the fact that Thais treat the Miss Universe contest as seriously as the Olympics, it seems likely that the pageant is going to be one of the biggest events in the country this year. Thailand has only hosted the pageant twice — in 1992 and 2005. Tourism Minister Weerasak Kosurat expressed his confidence in Thailand’s ability to host the Miss Universe contestants. While it has not yet been confirmed whether the
contest will be held in Bangkok, the City of Angels is the destination the government is looking to promote during the event. However the pageant is likely to be held at Muang Thong Thani complex in Nonthaburi on December 17th. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha welcomed the organisers’ choice, saying the government was willing to support the pageant. “Other countries would know more about Thailand as contestants would join activities at several places,” he said. Thailand hosted the 41st pageant in 1992, followed by the 54th in 2005. Two Thais have been crowned Miss Universe; Apasara Hongsakula in 1965 and Porntip Nakhirunkanok in 1988.

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
A new campaign has been organised to understand what is necessary and to make them feel comfortable about receiving their eyeglasses. Time Optic had announced their first campaign on 23rd of July on Facebook with people sharing how pleased they were with their changed eyesight with big smiles and a lot of joy as they could see a clear world again. As well as this, the quality of the frames and lenses that Time Optic gave them for this campaign are better and stronger.
15 An Alternative Treatment That Really Resonates
Wim van den Toorn first became a convert to the efficacy of Bio-Resonance after success in the treatment of his wife’s severe allergy problems. After the failure of more conventional medical treatments, her relief from this distressing condition lasted for 15 years. In therapy, disharmonic oscillations are returned to the body in a therapeutically effective way. The returned oscillations correct the distorted ones and stimulate the cells to oscillate in the original mode.
The couple was considering travelling to Singapore for another round of treatment before they discovered a Bio-Resonance Clinic in Bangkok and once again relief was at hand. That led to Wim learning more of the theory and practical application of this alternative medical treatment. His enthusiastic conversion led to the commencement of a Bio-Resonance Clinic in Hua Hin as the second clinic of its kind in Thailand, although Bio-Resonance is well established in parts of Europe with early origins in Germany.
Like many alternative forms of medicine, BioResonance has been dismissed by many mainstream health professionals. On the other hand, Wim points out there are scientific studies that show its effectiveness. There are also many individuals who have participated in the treatment and report significant improvement in their conditions. He also says that unlike pharmaceutical treatments, there are no side-effects or unforeseen consequences of Bio-Resonance, but treatment is not recommended in case of pregnancy and when you have a pace-maker. Bio-Resonance considers electromagnetic frequency information generated by a person’s own body for the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of diseases. It relies on the principle that disease is preceded by a change in the electromagnetic impulses of body cells that interact with neighboring cells.
Left to right - Woraseth (Sonny) Thanadakwong, Suvijak Boonsorn and Wim van den Toorn With Wim as the owner/director, the clinic was opened in February of this year. The clinic also offers Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the expertise of a Thai practitioner, Suvijak Boonsorn (OMD, L. Ac) who is responsible for medical supervision, bio-resonance therapy, acupuncture and other forms of TCM. The clinic retains the mentorship of Clinical Professor Dr. Bhasakit Wannawibool MD.TCM from the Faculty of Oriental Medicine at Bangkok’s Rangsit University.
A Bio-Resonance diagnostic session These signals are in the form of oscillations and the patterns differ between a healthy cell (harmonic) and a sick cell (disharmonic), or between a healthy or sick organ.
Acupuncture as one form of TCM Our introduction to the Hua Hin Bio-Resonance Clinic included a brief diagnostic session which normally takes a full hour including on-screen diagnostic charts pointing out areas of ‘disharmony’ in various parts of the body in need of correction. This is a painless experience with the high-tech diagnostic outputs colorfully displayed and easy to follow. We’re told that treatment is very similar in its operation and is typically undertaken over ten one hour sessions. We also witnessed clinic assistant Woraseth (Sonny) Thanadakwong as the recipient of an acupuncture session. The multiple needles applied to his back only provoked smiles and was once again pain free. Hua Hin’s Bio-Resonance and TCM Clinic now offers a real alternative for the diagnosis and treatment of a range of ailments including addictions and allergies with almost no medical condition considered to be untreatable. It may be unconventional but the ‘true believers’, especially those who have experienced relief from their health problems, are growing in number worldwide. Osteoporosis - The Problems of Fragile Bones
The cause of osteoporosis is the degrading of bones resulting in low bone mass and density. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle; so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Unfortunately for women as this disease occur more often for men. There is a high mortality rate in women from broken hip bones due to osteoporosis. The most common place to find osteoporosis is in the spine; which has to carry all the weight. However wrists, hip, arms, and ribs are also prone. The effects include back hump, compressed lungs causing shortness of breath, fatigue, panting, tendonitis, and degraded joints. This is not entirely an “old people disease.”, however the disease occurs as you age and as your body starts to degrade. A weakened body makes it easier to catch diseases, but how you take care of your body is important as well. When talking about symptoms, osteoporosis barely shows any noticeable signs. You may not be aware until a bone is broken, a backache, humpback, or you become shorter. If you feel that you are getting shorter, this may be as issue that should be explored. At a younger age, there is more bone formation than bone degradation. This bone mass may be retained until about 30 years of age. After that, the bones start to degrade more than being formed. In older women the degradation occurs two to three times faster than men, which is why this disease is more often found in women.
The followings are those who are at risk: People who are at the age of 60-65 years old and it will get worse who older than 80 years old Women at menopause or ovarian surgery a decrease in estrogens and androgens. Women at menopause have a four times high risk than men of that age. A family medical history Those with a small stature and low weight A nutrition deficiency, especially calcium and vitamin D A lack of sunlight or working in conditioning A lack of exercise and mobility Smokers and a high consumption of alcohol, coffee, tea and soda drinks Patients with intestinal and kidney problems Constantly using steroid medication or medication for diabetes and the thyroid gland. The best prevention is to avoid controllable risk factors. You should also eat foods with high nutrition, especially calcium, which is found in milk, eggs, small fish, beans and green leafy vegetables. Exercise more often; get more sunlight for more vitamin D and have regular checks on your bone density. Provided by Healthlab Hua Hin HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018

18 Some Offbeat Days to Celebrate in September After a long, slow, quiet season, we dug deep to find a healthy helping of celebrations to help you emerge from the low season blues. September 8th - Grandparents Day
September 18th – Cheeseburger Day
Your Country’s National Day
If you are not Thai then you will probably want to acknowledge your home country’s National Day in one way or another. Try to find a restaurant featuring the cuisine and traditional activities familiar to you. In September there are four prominent National Days.
Vietnam - September 2
Founder Marian McQuade wanted to set aside a special day not only for the lonely elderly, but also to encourage grandchildren to “tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents provide.” US President Jimmy Carter was so on board with this initiative, he made an official national holiday to honour grandmas and grandpas across the country.
September 9th – Teddy Bear Day
There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s California sandwich shop, “The Rite Spot”. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger. To celebrate National Cheeseburger Day, gather some friends together, start up your barbecue grills, grill some hamburger patties, add your favorite cheese, then enjoy!
September 20th +! – Oktoberfest
On September 2, 1945, at Ba Đình Square, Ho Chi Minh, leader of the communist Viet Minh organisation, declared Vietnam’s independence under the new name of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in a speech that invoked the United States Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution’s Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
Brazil - September 7
The Independence Day of Brazil (Portuguese: Dia da Independência), commonly called Sete de Setembro (September 7), is a national holiday observed in Brazil on September 7 of every year. The date celebrates Brazil’s Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarveson September 7, 1822. In Brasília, the celebration takes place at the Ministries Esplanade with a military parade in the presence of the President of Brazil.
Mexico - September 16
We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, today is the perfect day to celebrate your childhood friend!
September 18th – Peanut Day
Don’t let the “Oktober” part of the name fool you -the 16 day festival of beer, oompa music, and wurst always starts in late September. Although historically a Bavarian celebration held annually in Munich, Oktoberfests have popped up in cities all over the world. Though the holiday started as a royal wedding celebration, it has since been eclipsed by the German beer.
September 26th – Pancake Day
Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a Mexican holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which staked a revolt against the Spaniards. It follows from the day of the Cry of Dolores (El Grito de Dolores), on September 15. Mexicans celebrate their country’s Independence Day with fireworks, parties (fiestas), food, dance and music with “Viva Mexico” or “Viva la independencia” is shouted amidst the crowds on this day.
Chile - September 18
Peanuts, which grow underground, are rich in nutrients, providing over 30 essential nutrients and phytonutrients. Peanuts are a good source of niacin, foliate, fibre, vitamin E, magnesium and phosphorus. They also are naturally free of trans-fats and sodium and contain about 25% protein (a higher proportion than in any true nut). Crack open some peanuts and enjoy.
HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
The table is set, the batter is mixed, the griddle is hot, the butter and syrup are ready and so is everyone, ready to celebrate Pancake Day. You may not have time to make a pancake breakfast but that is okay, pancakes make a great dinner as well. Pancakes can actually be served at any time and with a variety of toppings or fillings some of which are jam, fruit, syrup, chocolate chips or meat.
September 18th celebrates the proclamation of the First Governing Body of 1810, and marking the beginning of the Chilean independence process. September 19, known as the “Day of the Glories of the Army”. Within Chile the Fiestas Patrias are often referred to as the Dieciocho, or “18th”. Unofficially, the celebration can last for around a week, depending on when it falls.
19 Over 30 Resorts Near Kaeng Krachan Dam Temporarily Closed by Flooding
More than 30 resorts located downstream of Kaeng Krachan dam, a popular tourist spot in Phetchaburi Province have been closed down temporarily due to heavy flooding.
The floodwater levels at the 30 plus resorts reportedly range from 1-3 metres, making it impossible for their operators to carry on with their business. It was also reported that spillover water from the spillway has heavily damaged the only road leading to the resorts downstream of the dam. Officials at Kaeng Krachan dam said that the dam was discharging 259 cubic metres/second of water out of the dam into the Phetchaburi river after water level in the dam has risen to 750 million
cubic metres against its full capacity of 710 million cubic metres. One of the resort operators, Mr Thongbai Klaipetch, said that his resort and nine others in the same neighbourhood were marooned and the only road to the resorts was badly flooded. About 60 families of Ban Tham Sua in Tambon Kaeng Krachan have made preparations to evacuate out of their village due to heavy flooding which has rendered their daily livelihood difficult. Thai PBS

Tourism Boom Prompts US Hotel To Open in Hua Hin
The prospect of 40 million foreign tourists coming to Thailand next year is too big a draw to ignore for boutique US hotel company Standard International. Better known for its trendy hotels in locations such as Miami Beach and New York, Standard International plans to open hotels in four locations in Thailand by 2021 worth about $150 million, including one in Hua Hin.
Standard International CEO Amar Lalvani CEO Amar Lalvani said it’s part of a strategy calling for 20 new properties over the next five years, including in London, Paris and Milan. “Growth is much faster in
Asia,” Lalvani said. “Thailand is our starting point and from here we are looking at opportunities throughout the region.” A surge in Chinese holidaymakers has stoked the expansion in Thailand’s tourism sector, which now accounts for roughly a fifth of the economy. Thai developer Sansiri Plc in 2017 acquired a 35% stake in Standard International for $58 million. Sansiri and other local investors will help fund Standard International’s planned hotels in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket and Koh Samui. Sansiri will build residential projects next to the hotels in the first three locations, targeting young professionals who want apartments with hotel-type services, Lalvani said. Standard International is in talks with investors to build hotels in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai. Lalvani expects as much as three-quarters of revenue to come from Asia in the next five years. The firm’s hotels include features such as nightclubs and restaurants to attract local fashionistas, as well as foreign tourists. – Bangkok Post
The Art of Hua Hin on Show in Bangkok
Nang Wanwimolkesa-Ngam is one of Hua Hin’s most well-known and respected artists. She has exhibited her works both locally and internationally for more than a decade.
The Airports Department will spend 3.5 billion THB to upgrade Hua Hin International Airport over the next five years, says the department’s director-general.
Darun Saengchai said the upgrade was part of the “Riviera Thailand” and Southern Economic Corridor projects. He said work at the airport would take four or five years and includes enlarging the passenger terminal and building a second one. The number of travellers using the airport is expected to increase by tenfold, to three million a year, within that timeframe. Darun said the runway would also be extended, from 30 to 45 metres, and the hangars would be expanded.
The department is also looking at building an airport in Ratchaburi for private jets, he said, mulling plans for both facilities and financing. To date no additional fights or destinations from Hua Hin have been revealed with Air Asia continuing to operate flights to Kuala Lumpur four times per week with a growing number of passengers; particularly as Malaysian travellers welcoming the opportunity to spend leisure time here. The Grand Opening is on the 1st of September at 18.00 hours. From Khun Nang: “I ask you to come join, play with me, at my 2018 exhibition & workshops. “I’m really pleased to see that the pedestrian overpass outside Market Village is now keeping those crossing the road safe and even though the white markings can still be clearly seen, driving along this part of Phetchakasim Road is now free of ‘traffic dodgers’! Next outside Blúport please without the traffic attendants trying to entice me to drive through the red light.” Eric From the Editor To me a red light means STOP UNTIL IT TURNS GREEN, even if there are no walkers in sight. Some training of the traffic wardens to that effect wouldn’t go astray. Puppy Love
“Please let me beg you for help I am a Norwegian mother who have a daughter from this country. She is an animal lover by heart. I need to ask your help to open up publish an article for us so we can help providing homes and get 5 puppies off the streets into goodhearted homes. We will try this to reach out by making a story with my daughter, 8 years old. My daughter, (name withheld) and I has taken care of 7 puppies (now 5 left) for three weeks. We bicycle and discovered the scared mom and puppies on a corner of a trafficated road (soi 94). My daughter has taken care of many dogs this summer, not only providing food but medicines (antibiotics and blood supplement and Bravecto) - This has saved three from dying and we are so happy we have spent the summer doing this. My daughter deserves a happy ending with the puppies, because if we can give hope we also help plant a seed in a new generation that will inspire to take care in the future Please see what you can do, I know you must be the one that can help us with an article about soi dogs and caring! Khob khun mak ka! Best regards, Llada” From the Editor Hua Hin Today receives many comments about the soi dog situation; some complaining, some with suggestions and in this case a heartfelt plea. The Cabinet meeting last month in Chumphon The SEC is estimated to cost at least 200 billion THB, which will mostly be spent on transport links in four provinces, namely Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, according to Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak. Somkid stated that the provinces were chosen first because they complement each other in terms of their location. “The South is the most fertile region but has low GDP per head due to scattered, non-unified development, which lacked strategic planning in the past,” he added. Under the scheme, the two coasts will be connected by a new railway running from Nakhon Pathom, Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon, which will be completed in 2020.
HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
The government also plans to add a route to Ranong, where plans are in action to make it a hub for ocean transit links with the Bay of Bengal. Somkid said this sea link will facilitate trade between countries in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and those in Bimstec (The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), which consists of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. During the meeting, the private sector proposed 28 projects totaling more than 200 billion THB, 80% of which are already being undertaken by the Ministry of Transport. The Ministry has allotted 83.3 billion for the third phase of railway projects, 43 billion for 17 road projects, 1.33 billion for airports, 628 million for the port in Ranong and 228 million for marine projects. – Bangkok Post

Public Health Ministry Steps up Efforts to Fight Dengue during Rainy Season
The Ministry of Public Health is stepping up efforts to fight the spread of dengue during the rainy season.
Closure of Waterfalls in National Parks Under Review
The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has announced a temporary closure of many waterfalls in national parks across the country in the wake of the looming rainy season.
Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Chatchai Sarikulaya says that the country’s dengue situation in 2018 is similar to that of 2015, when the epidemic was at a high level from the beginning of the year. Gen. Chatchai said that there have been over 37,000 dengue cases during January and July. Most patients were aged between five and 14 and were mostly reported in the central region, followed by the North, the South and the Northeast. He
added that 45 of them died from the virus, mostly patients over 35 years of age. The DPM went on to say that the survey has found high larvae population in various areas and urged relevant parties to step up eradication efforts throughout the rainy season, particularly at schools, hotels, factories and hospitals in order to keep the number of new dengue patients below the 10,000 mark during the next two months. NNT
Spokesman of the department Sompote Maneerat said that officials at each national park were told to closely monitor the water situation in the waterfalls and to immediately sound an alert if the water level has risen to a point deemed endangering visiting tourists. After closing for a brief period Pala-U waterfall has now reopened and attracting many visitore. He suggested tourists keep themselves informed about the waterfalls they want to visit, and to follow the advice of field officials and all the warning signs for their own safety. Sompote explained that some of the waterfalls were to be closed for only a short period, while others would be closed for a longer period, depending on the water situation in each waterfall. Nang Rong waterfall in Nakhon Nayok,
which was hit by massive run-offs from Khao Yai national park, red flags were put up to ban tourists from venturing into the waterfall, although the water situation has returned to normal. However, officials were told to keep a close watch on the water situation and the stream in anticipation of more rains. – thaipbs.or.th HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
22 Huge Increase in Fines and Jail Terms Proposed For Drivers without Licences

Thai Rath has reported that proposals are in the pipeline for a large scale revamp of fines and jail terms for those driving without a driving licence. The report comment that behaviours need to change and that the authorities have had enough. Additionally a separate licence will be required for ‘big’ bikes. The department of transport of the Transport Ministry is recommending the changes for two out of date laws stretching back to 1979. This would mean drivers without licences could be fined up to 50,000 THB and go to jail for three months. The current penalty is a 1,000 THB fine and a possible jail term of one month. Motorists driving while suspended or who have had their licence confiscated may
Department director Sanit Phromwong revealed that the proposals will now go forward for consideration to ministerial committees. The proposals also include modernisation of procedures and other licensing matters. They are seen as bringing the law up to date and designed to change the behaviour of Thais for the better.

The Cabinet has also given its approval to a draft law mandating training and testing of big bike riders. The definition of a ‘big’ bike is yet to be revealed. The Cabinet is expected to impose more control over motorcycle and car drivers. New regulations that may be implemented include the need for medical validation when applying for a license to ensure that the driver does not suffer from mental or physical illnesses that would impair their ability to operate a motor vehicle. Those who intend to ride a high powered motorcycle or a big bike will have to pass thorough training and testing first. Licenses to ride such bikes will be separate from licences for general motorcycles. Source: Thai Rath/NNT
TAT Encourages Travellers to Check Weather Updates During Monsoon Season
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is encouraging travellers to remain extra vigilant by following all safety rules and guidelines during the country’s current monsoon season. Visitors are also advised to keep up-to-date with daily Thailand weather forecasts by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) on impending storms, heavy rains, rough weather, etc. The TMD also issues regular flood, flash flood, or mud slide alerts while regular surf forecasts help predict high waves and other coastal threats that are common to the Andaman Sea.
The English language TMD website is www.tmd.go.th/en/
If it is a particular torrential monsoon shower, many tourist activities are curtailed or delayed if tour operators are responsible and think that there are undue health and safety risks or threats.
Activities likely to be affected include: Mountain trekking l White-water rafting Zip lining l Bungy jumping l Snorkelling l Sailing l Diving l Ferry transfers While some activities will not run at all during the rainy season, many will run as usual, especially those in the high traffic tourist areas. May to October sees the Thailand monsoon season sweep into the Southwest, with September bearing the brunt of the rains. It does get pretty rainy around Phuket, thanks to the region’s proximity to the Andaman Sea, and many of the smaller islands are shut down during the monsoon. Be aware that island crossings by ferry are going to be choppier than usual in the monsoon and must be scrutinised on an hourly basis even if a ticket is already purchased.
The monsoon rains tend to be short, intense bursts of rainfall. They could last for a few hours in the middle of the day and waiting that long till the sky clears, and then go when the next boat is ready can be a wise investment. Unlike the rest of the country, the Thailand monsoon season
does not hit Ko Samui until later in the year, with the rains coming in during October to December, peaking in November and tailing off in January. Hua Hin and Cha-Am remain as the least effected regions during the monsoon season. TAT News

Members of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin have attended the Hua Hin General Hospital to present a much needed piece of equipment; a Nerve Stimulator Machine. A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS or TNS) uses electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves for therapeutic purposes. The presentation was made by President Brian Anderson and Immediate Past President Dr Birger Rexed to Doctor Nut Ratanakosai who accepted it on behalf of the hospital. Hua Hin Hospital is the main public hospital in the city. It is a good option for common health care and provides trauma, heart disease, surgical, orthopedics and neurology facilities equipped with the latest medical technology. A new extension has recently been completed and the level of patient care has improved as a result. President Brian Anderson said “To be able to help our local hospital is a great honour for the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin. Anything that is of benefit to the local community gives us all a real pride. We will be looking at other ways we can help in the future”

26 The ‘Hands of God’ Lift Vietnam’s Golden Bridge
Vietnam’s newest bridge is already a hit with tourists thanks to the huge stone hands holding up the golden pathways. A golden bridge being held up by a giant’s stone hands may sound like something out of a storybook, but it’s very real.
The bridge stands 1,400 metres above sea level, so it offers up some once-in-a-lifetime views of the Vietnamese landscape, as well as picturesque landscaped gardens surrounding the structure. There are colourful flowers and exotic plants lining either side of the path for an extra burst of colour as tourists walk along. TA Landscape Architecture’s Vu Viet Anh constructed the bridge in an area already attracting travel enthusiasts for its cable car, replica French medieval village and landscaped gardens. This is not enough for the architect; there are also plans for a silver bridge made to look like a god’s strand of hair that will connect to the Vietnam Golden Bridge. The hands are meant to look like those of a mountain deity nestled in the Ba Na Hills The Cau Van ‘Golden Bridge’ opened in June in the Ba Na Hills near the city of Da Nang. The 150 metre long bridge sits perched on a mountaintop, overlooking the spectacular jungle landscape, held up by two huge concrete hands that look like they’re coming out of the jungle itself. The idea is that the hands look like some sort of mountain deity holding up the structure - it’s being hailed as a work of art by architects and visitors alike. But of course one of the biggest highlights for guests is the pair of giant hands which protrude over the side. The bridge which runs through the hands gives the visitor a feeling that they are walking on a thread that is in the hands of gods.
Foreign Tourists Drive Boom in Secondary Destinations Foreign travelers have become the driving force behind a boom in the Kingdom’s secondary tourism destinations, an online travel agency says.
Statistics show that nearly 90% of the demand for stays in Chiang Rai, Koh Lipe, Mae Hong Son, Trang and Trat came from international travelers in the 12 months to the end of the second quarter of 2018, online platform Expedia said. It said the pace of overall inbound demand to these destinations has grown by 30% year on year. A closer look at the inbound trends by destination showed that Trat was the most popular destination among the five, seizing nearly half of the overall inbound demand, followed by Koh Lipe and Chiang Rai. While Trat and Koh Lipe each experienced inbound growth of 20% year on year, it was Chiang Rai that led the chart with 60% growth. During the same period, Mae Hong Son and Trang enjoyed a healthy year-on-year growth above 40%. and Mae Hong Son proved to be more appealing to Asian travelers. Almost half of the inbound demand originated from Indonesia, China, Japan and South Korea. However, when it comes to the high-value spenders, it was the US and UK travelers that fueled the steady ADR growth in Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai, with a positive growth of 10% and more than 5% year-on-year, respectively. These long-haul travelers also tend to book for accommodation 25 days to 35 days in advance. Among the five destinations, Koh Lipe recorded the highest ADR, thanks to its white-sand islands, coral reefs and tropical forests. While the inbound demand was led by
Dotted with islands, beaches and forests, Trat and Trang were particularly popular among European travelers. Swedish, German and Danish travelers made up nearly 40% of the overall international demand in these destinations. They also booked on average of 71 days in advance before they travel (25 days earlier than average booking window), paid 15% more than the average daily rate (ADR), and stayed five days per trip (1.3 times longer than average length of stay). Hence, this makes them an attractive source of demand for hotel partners. Sweden, travelers from the US demonstrated strong growth momentum (40% year on year), coupled with positive ADR growth (under 10% year on year). Data from the Expedia Group also confirmed that the American travelers were more generous than Swedish visitors, as they typically paid 20% more on accommodation than their Swedish counterparts. Travelers from the UK proved to be another valuable source for revenue growth, as they were the only long-haul travelers that contributed a double-digit ADR growth (10% year on year) to Koh Lipe during the same period. – The Nation

Bangkok Land Prices Increase 1,000% in 30 Years
Land prices in Central Bangkok have increased by 1,000% since 1988. Land prices rose dramatically during the Asian Tiger boom years from 1988-1996 before the market came to a grinding halt in the 1997 financial crisis Land price growth resumed in the early 2000s and there has been a rapid escalation of prices over the past two years for prime central business district (CBD) sites. The increase in land prices has not been uniform and there has been a huge change in the development patterns in Bangkok. Historically, the commercial city centre was on Charoenkrung Road and the Government Centre was on Ratanakosin Island. In the 1950s and 1960s, the commercial centre moved to Silom and Surawongse Roads. Bangkok grew in the 1970s and 1980s, but did not have a clearly defined city centre and development spread as new roads were built, but this has now changed. The two big changes have been the opening and extension of the mass transit system with the first BTS Line in 1999 and the MRT Dark Blue Line in 2004. The mass transit lines have changed the way that Bangkok residents work,
live and play. By the mid 2020s, Bangkok should have about 460 kilometres of mass transit lines, compared to the 402 kilometre London Underground system.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Bangkok spread further and further outwards, but in the 2000s, Bangkok has become more inward looking with the adoption of highrise condominium living and the growth of modern office space. The city centre is now becoming more clearly defined and the next round of development will be built on many of the remaining under utilised sites such as the One Bangkok development
Mass transit routes are influencing property prices
‘One Bangkok’ is a development on the corner of Rama 4 and Wireless Roads
The popularity of Bangkok’s mass transit routes with over 1.2 million users a day has increased land values next to stations, but not every line or station is equally attractive. Land values have been partially determined by the popularity of a line and a station. “The other big determinant of land prices has been urban planning and building regulations, particularly those governing how much space can be built, obviously if less space can be built on a site then the land is worth less,” commented Ms. Kulwadee Sawangsri, Executive Director, Capital Markets – Investment & Land, CBRE Thailand. Planning and building regulations have become increasingly stricter and more sophisticated and are now a key factor in determining land price.
Land prices are starting to form a much greater proportion of total development costs as they have risen at faster rates than construction costs. The total development costs, mainly due to the increase in land prices, have risen, driving condominiums prices higher and raising the revenue needed to make rental projects feasible. CBRE expects that Central Bangkok will continue to be the most preferred location for the best hotels, offices, retail centres, residences and other types of buildings such as hospitals. Bangkok will have a clearly defined city centre with extended development along the mass transit line routes concentrated in clusters around the stations. The rate of increase of land prices will depend on the level of development activity and the returns that can be generated from
development. This will vary depending on what can be built and how much customers can afford to pay either to buy or rent in the completed developments. As the number of freehold potential development sites in Central Bangkok declines, CBRE expects that land prices will continue to rise. In some cases, land prices will be higher than the value of the existing building on the plot and we will see more older buildings being demolished and the sites being redeveloped.
Older condos are likely to be demolished At the moment, the condominium law requires that 100% of co-owners agree to revoke the condominium enabling it to be sold and redeveloped. This has not happened to date although there are now some condominiums where the total value of all the units is less than the vacant possession value of the land on which the condominium has been built. “Assuming that planning regulations do not change and the amount of space that can be built on sites remains the same, then Bangkok’s CBD land prices are likely to continue to rise,” concluded Ms. Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, Managing Director of CBRE Thailand.
230 Acting in Good Faith
Recently there was a Judicial Judgement of the Supreme Court, Case No: 11058/2559 which made some changes to this principle. The Supreme Court now considers that the heir can inherit a Lease when the Lessee dies. For this to occur, there are two preconditions: The Lease Agreement was for up to 30 years (not a lifetime) There is a clause that the Lessee has the right to transfer the Leasehold or Sub-Lease to any third person without any consent from the Lessor.
Thai Law For Foreigners is based on common questions put to the Chief Lawyer of one of the most experienced legal firms in Hua Hin. Of course each set of circumstances will differ and a qualified lawyer should always be consulted when legal issues arise.
Inheritance of Leasehold
In general, Leasehold is not inheritable because it has been made in consideration of the personality of each person; that is the Lessor (a person who leases or lets a property to another; a landlord) and the Lessee (a person who holds the lease of a property; a tenant). This is a substantial consideration when a Lease Agreement/Contract is made. There is no doubt that the Lease Agreement/Contract will be terminated immediately by law when the Lessor or the Lessee dies, therefore, the Leasehold is not inheritable to the Lessee’s heir because the Lease ceases to exist.
3 Bedroom 3 Bathroom
Living area: 246 Sq-m
In these circumstances the qualifying personality of the Lessee or Sub-Lessee was determined not to be a substantial concern. The Supreme Court made a decision that the Lease is still effective even though the Lessee has died; therefore, the heirs of the Lessee can inherit the Lease for the remaining Lease duration. This decision of the Supreme Court was made under resolution of the Supreme Court General Meeting No: 9/2559 (2016) and will be of benefit to other later cases with this issue.

A recent case in a Hua Hin Court involved a foreigner who had set up a Company using a nominee Thai shareholder with 51% of the shares with the foreigner having 49% of the shares and named as the authorised director to buy land. Several years after purchasing land, during a visit from his home country, the foreigner saw someone constructing a house on the Company’s land. That person claimed that the land belonged to him having purchased it from the Company. In a civil case against the buyer, it was claimed that the Purchasing Contract was void because the Thai shareholder of the company had committed a crime by falsifying documents and the foreigner’s signature to amend the Company registration. It was claimed that the Thai shareholder had unlawfully named himself as the authorised director so that he could sell the land. The buyer defended the case stating that he had bought the land in Good Faith and paid for it, so he should be protected by law. As the Company amendments had been made using false documents, the Judge’s decision was that the sale was void because a crime had been committed. The unlawfully authorised Thai Director was unable to act on behalf of the Company to sell the land, therefore, the land purchasing contract and any subsequent transactions were void. The land was then returned to the foreigner. To Act in Good Faith and Pay is not protected in all cases. 4 32 When the Rules Give You a Good Break
Most golfers have the impression that they experience more unlucky breaks on the course than they benefit from lucky breaks. Certainly they seem to talk more about the bad breaks! This article is about a pro golfer who got his shot wrong, but knowing the Rules, it resulted in the right result.
Jordon Spieth (left) and Ricky Fowler (right) wondering whose ball was remaining on the green Rickie Fowler, one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour, had a very lucky break when he overhit his 90 yards pitch into the par 4 16th hole, during the 2015 BMW Championship. His ball was destined to fly over the green into thick rough when it struck the stationary ball of his fellow competitor, Jordan Spieth.
One ball came to rest within 12 inches of the hole and the other deflected off the putting green, over the fringe and into the rough. Fortunately for Rickie, it was his ball that had ricocheted back, coming to rest close to the hole. For Ricky, the good break was that the Rules allowed him play the ball the ball where it finished, saving himself at least one shot. Jordon replaced his ball with no penalty other than to see his opponent edging away on the leader board with another birdie. It was Rule 19-5 that applied to Rickie Fowler’s ball; If a player’s ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by a ball in play and at rest, the player must play his ball as it lies. It was Rule 18-5 that applied to Jordan Spieth’s ball; If a ball in play and at rest is moved by another ball in motion after a stroke, the moved ball must be replaced.
Come rain or shine they read the greens, give you the yardage, hold your umbrella and if you are lucky even give your shoulders a quick massage. After putting up with holiday hackers, you would have thought the caddies would have had enough of the golf course. However a large number actually like to play a round themselves and many would put regular hackers to shame.
Smart thinking General Managers encourage them to play on quiet days or evenings, as it improves their knowledge and understanding of their course and the game overall. Taking this a step further the Amazing Thailand Singha Caddie Championship is held on golf courses across Thailand in a hunt to find Thailand’s best lady caddy golfer. The Majestic Creek Country Club Hua Hin has hosted round seven of the Singha Amazing Thailand Caddy Championship 2018” on 7th August with a field of 160 caddies taking to the course. The Championship format involves eight courses at Nakhon Nayok, Chiang Mai,
Songkhla, Bangkok, Prachinburi and Phuket with 12 winners qualifying in each round before the final with 96 players eligible to play in the final at the Siam Country Club in Pattaya on 17th September. An unanswered question; how much did they tip their own caddy?

6 34 ‘Plogging’; Healthy for the Environment and Your Body The Scandinavians have introduced new trends to the jogging world. This year’s 2018 hot trend, ‘plogging’, comes from a Swedish word mix, jogging - running and plocka upp, which means ‘picking up or collecting’; collecting garbage that is.
When Erik Ahlström moved from Åre, a ski resort town in central Sweden to Stockholm, he had a strong first impression of the capital: “det ser ju ut som en soptipp,” which translates as “It looks like a dump.” Ahlström, an environmentalist, was put off by the amount of litter on the streets and in the parks, and resolved to do something about it. He somehow managed to organise groups of joggers, armed with garbage bags and gloves, to lope through Stockholm with him, picking up litter as they went. The trend of plogging exploded worldwide from that point. the beach, the weight of numbers and the enthusiasm of the ‘ploggers’ made the event a great success. Next time you are considering some exercise with a jog along the beach or road, either alone or with a group, take a bag with you and join the ‘plogging’ revolution!
Running is good for your health and picking up litter is good for the planet’s health, so why not combine the two? ‘Plogging on the Beach’ came to Cha-Am last month when hundreds of ploggers took to the sands last month on a ‘plogg’ which probably rendered a 2 kilometre section of the main Cha-Am beach the cleanest in Thailand! Cha-Am mayor Mr Nopporn Vuttikul welcomed as young crowd and family groups armed with bags to collect any refuse that could be found as they set off from the beach alongside the Long Beach Hotel to the finish line at the beach view point.
It’s probably fair to say that the exercise component took second place to the more social aspects of the occasion, including celebrations into the evening around the finish line. However as an alert to the need to take better care of the environment for both participants and those just relaxing on
Concerns Over the Welfare of Young Muay Thai Fighters
With cheers and the promise of money attracting some 200,000 youngsters under the age of 15 to go into Muay Thai, human-rights and health advocates in Thailand have raised concerns about the violation of their rights and the possible impact punches and kicks may have on their brain development. As the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission’s panel on the elderly, disabled, children, education and public health, Ms Chatsuda Chandeeying said this issue required prompt action because such competitions - in which the young fighters get paid for boxing - fell within the frame of child labour and abuse. She said the 1999 Boxing Act should be amended so it is in line with the 2003 Child Protection Act and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in order to ensure the protection of children. She also cited a study conducted by Dr Jiraporn Laothamatas, director and neuro-radiologist at Ramathibodi Hospital’s Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Centre (AIMC). The study estimated that 200,000 to 300,000 children - some as young as four - were taking part in these boxing competitions nationwide and were getting

exposed to injuries, especially to the brain. The study claims that internal brain injuries, normally caused by direct blows to the head, are usually difficult to detect, but could have long-term effects and even lead to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s later in life. Dr Jiraporn’s study prompted the AIMC to discuss the matter last December with the hospital’s Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Centre and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, and seek appropriate solutions. The study showed brain damage and memory loss, as well as a high risk of neurological disorders among young fighters compared to their non-fighting peers. It also found that young fighters’ IQ scores were lower by 10 points. “Such brain injuries will impair the young fighters’ education and well-being.
These children have no other choice but to become professional boxers later in life. “How can they possibly study and find jobs? What will their quality of life be with a bruised brain and low IQ? They might develop neurological disorders later in life and become a burden on those around them,” Dr Jiraporn said. Children under 10 must be limited to non-contact sparring to develop technique only while those aged 10-15 must avoid head contact. Those aged over 15 should only
fight in properly organised bouts and wear protective gear, she said. Despite the 1999 Boxing Act’s requirement that all Muay Thai boxers be above the age of 15, some 100,000 child fighters are well below that age limit. As the children are not registered with the Sports Authority of Thailand, they can fight only in unauthorised rings or at events held using the law’s loopholes. These children are also not always provided with sufficient safety gear. The Nation/Asia News Network

10 38 Promoting Golf in Thailand; With Other ASEAN Nations Closing Fast
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has hosted golf operators from international markets to meet with suppliers at the Thailand Golf Travel Mart 2018 with the catch-phrase ‘World Class Golf Destination’. Mr Tanet said, “Thai golf tourism has generated a lot of revenue to the country. In 2016, about 400,000 players came to Thailand generating an income of 4.8 billion THB. The average spending per person for golf is about 12,215 THB per day which is twice that spent by other tourists. Thailand excels at delivering a complete golf experience. Not only the diversity of courses and standardised amenities, but also unique local experiences, make Thailand competitive on both a regional and global level. The TGTM 2018 will strengthen the country’s position as the world’s leading golf destination.”
The event was held in Phuket from July 23-26 and hosted by Phuket Governor Prakob Wongmaneerung and Public Relations Director of TAT Thanet Petchsuwan. More than 128 buyers from 30 countries attended the TGTM 2018 with the majority coming from Asia (62 buyers) and the ASEAN region (35 buyers). There were also 27 buyers attending from Europe and four from the USA. A total of 111 local sellers representing Thai golf courses, tour operators, hotels and travel agents were on hand to sell their products and services.
“This property is the most perfect canvas,” says Robert Trent Jones II of Hoiana Shores, his first Vietnamese championship golf course design The Hoiana Shores Golf Club project is expected to employ in excess of 350 golf and hospitality professionals, the majority to be sourced from Vietnam’s first ever Golf Operations and Maintenance College on-site at Hoiana. Three priority requirements have been identified for Indonesia to catch up with Thailand’s golf tourism. “The first is direct flights and air connectivity. Second, we need to quickly hold a huge-scale Golf Travel Mart that involves buyers from all over the world. The third is our country’s brand awareness through international golf tournaments,” explained Visi Prima Golf Indonesia.

Thailand’s success in golf tourism has not gone unnoticed by other ASEAN countries. The Vietnamese golf industry is growing and becoming a real challenger to the Thai golf industry. A national development plan for golf courses suggests that by the end of 2020, Vietnam will have 96 golf courses however that target may well be an underestimate. IMG has already built 12 golf courses in Vietnam. Nicklaus Design who has built already 3 golf courses with another 7 are under construction. The FLC Group plans to build 20 new golf courses before 2021. The value of these golf course development projects is as USD 1 billion. The Hoiana Shores Golf Club, 40 kilometres from the Da Nang Airport) began in August 2016. It is part of a US $4 billion mega-resort. This integrated resort complex will have a 5-star clubhouse and state-of-the-art practice facilities. A high profile country club, entertainment and retail facilities with a casino, a mass market hotel, villa units and condo-hotel for sale and with timeshares are planned. It will span a site of approximately 985.5 hectares. The developers are expecting to become one of Asia’s most pre-eminent golf and leisure destinations. HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
Hua Hin Today’s Editor David (right, being ‘interviewed’ by Malaysian golf tour operators. Malaysia is also eager to further enhance a somewhat low profile place on the world golfing stage. International flights between Hua and Kuala Lumpur now offers opportunities for golfers from both locations to enjoy an expanded golfing experience. At least one golf tour operator from KL has offered golfing holidays for Malaysian golfers to our region with local golfers also considering Malaysian golfing opportunities. There are approximately 250 golf courses in Thailand, with destination diversity and the vast choice of golf courses located throughout the country is a key factor in attracting the large numbers of visitors coming to play golf in Thailand.
The Hua Hin/Cha-Am region has all the facilities necessary to advance its position within the ASEAN golfing scene. However the quality of the golf courses must be matched with quality marketing. The current Hua Hin / Cha-Am Golf Festival remains off the radar of foreign golfers as an event lacking in both imagination and promotion.

40 12 The Most Celebrated Football Competitions in Town! The 24th Confederation Cup
Nopporn Wutthikul, Hua Hin Mayor, wishing all competitors well before taking to the field Teams from nineteen Hua Hin and Cha-Am resorts and hotels have put their best foot forward at the 24th annual Football Federation Cup kick-off commencing last month as a very festive sporting occasion.
A large gathering of VIP hotel staff at the 2018 Federation Cup Opening
The opening match of the competition featured VIP teams included a number of Resort General Managers and government executive staff. No one seemed to know the final score but it was a fiercely and fairly contested match to set the scene for the main event which all players pledged to play in the same spirit. The more serious matches between the hotel teams now continue until the 13th September at the Khao Takiab Football Stadium before the closing ceremony, trophy presentations and charity donations. Winning the Federation Cup is certainly a matter of pride with some bragging rights to the winning hotel. However this is another example of the friendly spirit between the region’s hotels; much more than an elaborate and spectacular good old-fashioned team building exercise.

Hua Hin Golf Courses Awarded the Asia Pacific Order of Zenith The Asia Pacific Order of Zenith is a spin-off from the long running Asian Golf Awards, the only pan-Asian recognition award program for the golf industry that is now in its nineteenth year.
Given the long and impressive history of the Asian Golf Awards, it was generally felt that the time had come for the creation of a special award that would seek out and honour the absolute best amongst the best. An award designed to recognise distinguished golf clubs and permanently enshrine these clubs in a hallowed class all their own. Hence, the creation of the Asia Pacific Order Of Zenith.
Mike Sebastian, CEO of the Asia Pacific Golf Group Commenting on the special award, Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, the owner of the Asian Golf Awards said, “The time has come for us in the industry to establish a Hall of Fame for the best amongst our golf clubs – clubs that have strived to deliver the best all round experience for golfers.” Asia needs to develop a benchmark to measure excellence and the best way to do this is to create a peer group of clubs renowned for their commitment to excellence to serve the yardstick for others. To kick-off the program, a total of twelve golf clubs have been selected to be HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018
the initial inductees with all the organisations having success in past Asian Golf Awards polls. Each of the premier clubs on the award list has distinguished and excelled itself in terms of operating a golf club noted for the quality of its golf course, its club house facilities and services and its commitment to deliver a quality golfing experience to both members and guests alike. Local golf courses, Banyan and Black Mountain have achieved this award with one other Thailand (Bangkok) golf course.

both Banyan GC and Hua Hin as the number one golf destination in Thailand”. 14 42 17th Hua Hin / Cha-Am Golf Festival 2018 Underway
Play is now well underway in the 17th Hua Hin - Cha-Am Golf Festival after a colourful opening ceremony heralding a tournament day at the Royal Springfield Country Club on 4th August.
The opening ceremony featured representatives of the participating golf courses presided over by Tanes Petsuwan, Deputy Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand. In attendance were the Cha-Am Mayor, the Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khirikhan Golf Course Association Chairman Khun Suwit Reanrogruang and Board Members. The Tourism Authority of Thailand was also represented by the regional Directors joined by members of the Hua Hin/Cha-Am Tourism Association.
Assembled dignitaries on stage at the official opening The Hua Hin/Cha-am Golf Festival has been held successfully for the past 16 years to promote golf in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The event aims to boost the number of visitors during what has traditionally been the provinces’ low season.
However very few non-Thai golfers were in attendance; testament to the lack of promotion both locally and abroad. Timely marketing of this important event with significant sponsorship is well overdue to achieve the Festival’s promotional aims and to become a focus for low season golfing tourists. Local golf promoters are suggesting that the Golf Festival is due for a makeover and questioning the appeal of the current format. With few special events, celebrity golfers or prizes, the discounts on offer little incentive. Additionally individual promotions and deals from regional courses may cut across these discounts. Weekly events at the golf courses involved have been omitted from this year’s Festival. During the two months of the festival (August & September), the participating golf courses are offering special promotions at 1,000 and 1,800 THB green fees per person per round. The closing ceremony and tournament will be held at Banyan Golf Course on 6th October. Golf Festival Courses 1,800 THB Green Fees Banyan Golf Course Black Mountain Golf Course
About the Rules The Pros Getting It Wrong Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie was the subject of a controversial Rules incident in 2005 that still simmers over a decade later.
Montgomerie put his approach shot to the green into a greenside bunker. The ball was near the edge of a deep bunker; it seemed that his only possible stance was to have one foot in the bunker and the other out. Meanwhile, the weather had been worsening and realising that a horn was about to be sounded suspending play, due to potentially dangerous lightning, he left his ball in the bunker and walked off the course. The following day, on the resumption of play, Montgomerie’s ball was no longer in the bunker.
Montgomery faced with a much easier bunker shot Rule 6-8d(iii) came into play; play needed to be resumed from where it was discontinued. The player must, either before or when play is resumed, proceed as follows: (iii) if the player’s ball or ball-marker is moved (including by wind or water) while play is discontinued, a ball or ball-marker must be placed on the spot from which the original ball or ball-marker was moved. If the spot where the ball is to be placed is impossible to determine, it must be estimated and the ball placed on the estimated spot.. Neither playing partners had seen Montgomerie’s lie in the bunker so it was up to him to estimate where his ball was at rest and replace another ball at that spot. Television replays later showed that Montgomerie replaced the ball between 12 and 18 inches from its original position, which meant that he was able to take a much easier stance with both feet outside of the bunker. Montgomerie later admitted that he had been wrong about the spot where he placed the replacement golf ball, but was adamant that it he made an ‘inadvertent error’ in estimating where it lay. However, he apologised and donated his prize money of £24,000 to a local Tsunami Relief charity. HUA HIN TODAY, September 2018

2 46 Som Tam Listed on the Top Ten Dishes of the Planet
Som tam, the ever-popular Thai spicy papaya salad, is ranked fifth in the latest list of the top 500 best dishes according to the Lonely Planet Travel Guide for travelers ‘The Ultimate Eat-list’ is a ranking of the top 500 foodie experiences from all over the world.
The top 10 best dishes are: pintxos from San Sebastian, Spain; curry laksa from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; sushi from Tokyo, Japan; beef brisket from Texas, USA; Som tum (or Som tam) from Thailand; smorrebrod from Copenhagen, Denmark; crayfish from Kaikoura, New Zealand; bibimbap from Seoul, South Korea; pizza Margherita from Naples, Italy; and dim sum from Hong Kong. The list was drawn up by expert food editors of Lonely Planet who enlisted the help of chef Adam Liaw and food blogger Leyla Kazim to rank the entries, according to the editors. The entries were evaluated according to the taste, cultural importance and the special atmosphere of the location. – Bangkok Post About Som Tam Thai green papaya salad, which in Thailand is known as as som tam (ส้มตำ), is one of the most commonly available and popularly consumed dishes in Thailand. Som tam (ส้มตำ) originates in the northeastern part of the Thailand (Isaan), which is on the border of Laos, where the same dish is a staple as well. You’ll now find green papaya salad everywhere throughout Thailand, and on just about every street corner in Bangkok.

The Ingredients 5 cherry tomatoes 2 chili peppers 1 tablespoon dried shrimp 1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 carrot 1 clove garlic 6 green beans 2 cups shredded green papaya 3/4 lime 1 1/2 tablespoons palm sugar 2 tablespoons toasted peanuts The Dressing (palm sugar) One of the main dressing ingredients for this Thai green papaya salad recipe is palm sugar which balances the sour lime juice of the dressing. Roasted Peanuts Freshly roasted peanuts are another one of the necessary ingredients when making Thai green papaya salad. For the best taste get raw peanuts and roast them myself, so they have a nice fresh crunchiness to them. However, you just use any kind of roasted peanuts, just roasted and unsalted. The Green Papaya When you think of a papaya, you might think of an orange colored fruit with little black seeds in the middle that’s extremely
sweet. But green papayas (which are literally papayas that are picked unripe, so they are hard and green), not only appear completely green, but they taste completely different. They almost have a neutral cucumber like flavour. A green papaya can’t be compared to anything for the texture.
The locals are inclined to utter – “papaya, pock, pock”, during this process! To prepare the green papaya, first you want to peel off the outer dark green skin. Then either using something like a cheese grater, or chopping it manually with a knife you need to julienne your green papaya. When you get closer to the center, you will see the white immature seeds inside. Stop and move onto another part of the papaya. Discard any seeds that got into your bowl.
The dish is made using a wooden pestle and a spatula. Smash a clove of garlic first. Then add green beans and halved cherry tomatoes. Pound a few times just to bruise the beans and get the juice out of the tomatoes. Add chili peppers and crush them just enough to release the hotness, unless you like your salad really hot. Add the green papaya, dried shrimp, toasted peanuts, fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar. Use the pestle to push the mixture up in the mortar and the spatula to push it down so that the mixture is mixed well. If you do not have a big enough mortar you can crush garlic, tomatoes and green beans first. Set them aside in a large bowl. Add dried shrimp, fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar to the bowl. Add green papaya and mix well. Serve with sticky rice and a sliver of cabbage, green beans and Thai basil. Tips and Techniques For a vegetarian som tum, omit the dried shrimp and substitute soy sauce for fish sauce. Some people use tamarind in place of lime. Regular sugar can be substituted for palm sugar. The balance of fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar and peppers listed are important. Som tum is an individual dish with some including more lime juice than what the recipe calls for. This Thai green papaya salad is easy to prepare and tastes delicious.
473 Baan Chok – Appealing to All the Senses
The Baan Chok Cafe & Eatery on a blue sunny day A dark and stormy day really needed a setting to offset such a dreary outlook. The combination of an expansive vista across the lawns past majestic trees to the adjoining seaside and the open sunlit spaces of the Baan Chok Cafe & Eatery provided that relief with grey skies soon forgotten.
Open spaces and an expansive outlook to the ocean Baan Chok replicates an historic family home and retains the traditional colonial feel and look by design and retention of the gardens which are clearly visible through full length glazed openings leading to the beachfront. The restaurant is set within the They Talay Estate alongside the BaBa Beach Club, residential villas, condominiums, hotel and commercial spaces. The estate has over 110 Rai of land on 160 metres of coastline between Hua Hin and Cha-Am. In recognition of the significance of this Estate, Thew Talay is the only local nomination and one of two nominations
for Thailand’s Best Mixed Use Development Award soon to be announced at the 2018 Thailand Property Awards. Baan Chok now offers a relaxed and casual dining experience for They Talay residents but also for visiting diners. It also offers a venue for private gatherings or corporate gatherings with second level meeting rooms and facilities. Preparations were on hand to set the scene for around 50 guests the day after our visit with the lawns ready to be bathed in light and a DJ to provide entertainment from the stage and ocean backdrop. Our selection from the extensive menu of contemporary cuisine proved to be another antidote to the grey skies. First a giant pizza with half ’n’ half toppings of bright green pesto chicken and the Thai tastes of Tom Yang Goong. This hot and sour Thai dish is typically a soup cooked with shrimp but proved to be an unexpected but ideal pizza topping with all the signature spicy flavours. The Baan Chok menu features international dishes with a touch of Thailand, although traditional Thai items are also available. Grilled salmon salad with soy lime dressing, spaghetti with crab, tomato and cream sauce topped with grated parmesan soon followed; each with subtle and balanced flavours. Our advice at this point is to restrain your appetite for the specialty desserts which are all freshly made in-house. Presentation is a key to the success of any dessert with the visual appearance heralding some delectable taste sensations.
Vanilla panna cotta served with raspberry sorbet, caramel sauce & froy – tong topping, chocolate fondant and vanilla icecream then Thai tea crepe cake and meringue lemon mousse tart all proved the point that dessert at Baan Chok really are special. There’s an extensive wine, cocktail and other ‘adult’ drink menu available but to add we chose to go with fruity cool drink alternatives. Amongst the selection is iced coconut mocha, sri-trus (pineapple, mango, mint & lime) and a carrot, banana, pineapple, orange, honey ‘power bunny’. Once again attractive colours proved to be a stimulant to the palate as restaurateurs worldwide are well aware. Dining at Baan Chok is a delightful experience, both visually and to satisfy the palate. Perhaps that’s as a forerunner to one of the regular BaBa Beach Club ‘Playlist’ musical events, to celebrate a special event or to just to savour a relaxed fine dining excursion. After the meal there is an opportunity to stroll along the sands to complete the Baan Chok Cafe & Eatery Where: Within the Thew Talay Estate; look for the 196 kilometre marker on Phetchakasim Road around 20 kilometres north of Hua Hin. Hot foods have been the focus of research suggesting that eating fiery ingredients such as chilli peppers may do more than burn your tongue. These foods may help you live longer. “There is accumulating evidence from mostly experimental research to show the benefit of spices or their active components on human health,” said Lu Qi, an associate professor at Harvard School of Public Health and co-author of the study. But the evidence evaluating consumption of spicy foods and mortality from population studies had been lacking, he said. As a result, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences studied data collected from 2004 to 2008 as part of the China Kadoorie Biobank. Using self-reported questionnaires, they analyzed the spicy food consumption of nearly half a million people age 30 to 70 across 10 regions in China, excluding those with cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Li ‘The Chilli Man’ Youngzhi eats up to 2 kilograms of chillies every day
They then reviewed the records of 20,224 people who died over a seven-year follow-up period and found that those who ate spicy foods six or seven times a week had a 14% lower risk of premature death for all causes than people who ate spicy foods less than once a week. People who frequently consumed spicy food also showed a lower risk of death from cancer or ischemic heart and respiratory system diseases. Fresh and dried chilli peppers were the most common spicy sources, according to the study. The study points to the benefits of capsaicin, a bioactive ingredient in chilli peppers, which has been linked to health perks such as increased fat burning. Folk medicine practitioners also say capsaicin can help fight infection and stimulate the kidneys, lungs and heart. The study cites limitations including the lack of information about other dietary and lifestyle habits or how spicy food was cooked or prepared. In addition, researchers note that although chilli pepper was the most commonly used spice based on selfreports, the use of different spices tends to increase as the use of chilli pepper increases. Consuming these other spices may also result in health benefits, independent of chillies. FOOD & Entertainment, September 2018

539 The Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort is Now Plastic Straw-free
The InterContinental Hua Hin Resort is pleased to announce that the resort is taking steps to be single-use plastic free across the hotel and restaurants.
It will no longer purchase plastic straws with a commitment to offer compostable straws made from plants. From now on, paper straws at InterContinental Hua Hin Resort are available upon request. Plastic straws suck because they harm marine wildlife and ecosystems and, expose us to unhealthy toxic chemicals. They are used for minutes, here for centuries, piling up daily. 3 WAYS TO STOP SUCKING PLASTIC 1. Skip the straw and sip your drink. 2. Switch to reusable steel, glass or bamboo straws. 3. Use paper straws instead.
