Locally Graffiti is called Street Art or “Art on the Wall”. Many cities in Asia have become famous for whole sections with amazing Street Art, such as Ipoh in northern Malaysia. The street art is self-expression of an artist (or group of artists) telling stories about their community and their lifestyle from the past until present through the means of painting pictures on vacant walls. People no longer need to visit an art studio or gallery to visualise these tales. The Hua Hin municipality believes that this project will promote tourism, draw in tourists and becoming another landmark of the city. Twenty art students from the Faculty of Architecture and Design of King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi voluntarily came to create their expressions of Hua Hin through paintings and drawings, which took them a total of 5 days to complete.

6 Everyone will be a Winner at this Charity Golf Event

The beneficiary of the February 2020 La Grappa & DanSea Charity Golf Event has already been decided. Once again, charity funding for local families with disabilities in Hua Hin district will be the real winner! This annual event has again attracted a full field of 160 golfers; there’s no need for the organisers to proactively promote the event, or to find the 40 teams needed for a full field.

Peter Kirketerp, the owner of La Grappa Italian restaurant in Hua Hin, is well known as a host who always ensures a sensational event which golfers allways plan to join well in advance. Participants know what’s in store is a fun day of golf (Texas Scramble), a lot of laughter, great food and drink and a great

About Charity Hua Hin Thailand This is where ‘Charity Hua Hin Thailand’ (CHHT) plays an active part in the event, as the recipient of the net profits, anticipated to be around the half million THB mark. Last year’s event enabled CHHT to increase the number of families being assisted to between 48 and 50 families every month. CHHT volunteers are dedicated to assisting families with disabled family members; 100% of all donations are spent on the needs of these families, as all volunteers bear their own costs.

opportunity to mingle with friends. These golfers are also ready to show their generosity towards the event’s charity objective. Being held at the awardwinning Banyan Golf Club means that conditions for competitive golf will be without peer, however this is a community event rather than just a golf tournament. Aiming to win and taking the game too seriously is clearly not the primary goal of

these golfers. Peter also knows how to add to their handicap with Prosecco, an Italian sparkling white wine, freely flowing on course! But the more serious matter is that the generated funds, raised through generous sponsorships and individual contributions during the day, will make a real difference in the lives of many less fortunate members of the Hua Hin community.

Charity Hua Hin has been operating since 2010, when the Director of the Hua Hin Hospital initiated a Wheelchair Project involving CHHT volunteers, carrying out home visits with hospital staff to assess and manage the provision of wheelchairs. This project continued after the first stage, when second hand wheelchairs were offered free to patients with disabilities. These wheelchairs were donated by the Wheelchair Project under Royal Patronage of the ‘Rajanagarindra Institute for Child Development’ in Chiang Mai. Later the Project also donated shower and toilet chairs. A core component of CHHT charity work is now the purchase and distribution of vital equipment and consumables which are beyond the financial resources of these families. This may include b a n d a g e s , b l a n ke t s , sanitary requirements, diapers for adults and children, plastic gloves, suction catheters and milk powder. Monthly food parcels are provided but also air mattresses, refrigerators, fans, cooking stoves and gas bottles.

HUA HIN TODAY, 1 - 15 January 2020

In fact, everything that assists these disabled patients to realise basic living conditions which others may take for granted. An important initiative, facilitated by last year’s charity golf event, has been the launch of the CHHT Study Fund in April 2019. This is spearheaded by two experienced Thai educators who have joined the volunteer group. The fund targets children between the ages of 4 and 17 who come from families supported by CHHT. The fund pays the basic costs for these children to study at a government school (school fees, books, uniforms, sports clothes and travel costs) so these children may receive a proper education and a way out of poverty and dependency. From an unheralded beginning, Charity Hua Hin has grown in its capacity to serve the disadvantaged of our community. Apart from receiving funds from the charity golf event, local service clubs and expat societies as well as overseas groups, now support CHHT. Coordinators Vincent Kerremans, Peter de Jong and their fellow volunteers offer their sincere appreciation to all these benefactors.

Officially the closing date for the charity golf event registration is 31st January, albeit the event is fully booked. However if you have a team of four, it may still be worthwhile contacting Peter Kirketerp, in case of a cancellation. The full cost is 24,000 THB per team, including the famous wine dinner. Of course, event sponsorship opportunities remain open. If you have ideas about how you can contribute, there will always be a way to support the work of CHHT and the less fortunate in our community. To offer your support, contact Peter Kirketerp at 081 844 7308 or email: peter @mondovino.co.th. For more information about Charity Hua Hin Thailand. Visit www.charityhuahinthailand. com La Grappa & DanSea Charity Golf Format: Texas Scramble, teams of four, shotgun start – amateur golfers only Where & When: Banyan Golf Course, Saturday 22nd February, tee-off at 11 AM After The Game: Wine Dinner and presentations from 17.30.

The band is known for their energetic performances and distinctive vocals and harmonization. This will be the band’s 3rd time to take on Black Mountain’s enthusiastic audience. Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

As an expat living in Khao Tao Village for the past 8 years, my wife and I would like to thank you for your effort in supplying all the information regarding the places and events happening in Hua Hin during Christmas and New Year. We have booked our reservations in one of the 5-star hotels for the grand celebration. Although the tickets are quite expensive, considering the high exchange rate of the Thai Baht, it’s all worth it. After all, 2020 comes once in a lifetime. Happy New Year to you and to Hua Hin Today! Your subscriber, Mr. Hans Glumpieg From the Editor: Thanks for your good wishes; it’s always our pleasure to promote what’s happening in our community! Dear Ms. Editor, I understand that Hua Hin and the rest of Thailand are trying hard to ban the use of plastic bags. I’ve seen many 7-11 stores and Family Mart, including department stores have started doing it, which is good – less pollution and preserving the environment. My question is: “How about the local wet markets, street food stalls and other small shops? They still use plastic bags to put in the food that you’ve bought, for example: fried rice, noodles, som tam, barbecues, sweets, etc. When are they going to stop using these plastic bags or is it really possible?” Just a reality check…… Regards, Mrs. Rosemary T. (Concerned Environmentalist) From the Editor: Long established practices may take time to change but we’re confident that change is coming. In the meantime, local action, including your refusal to take singleuse plastics, will also play a part.

12 Offbeat Celebrations 2020 New Year Celebrations The eve of December 31 ‘til the morning of January 1

New Year’s Eve is when all the fun and festivities happens. We see out the old year and ring in the new. Many people take it as an opportunity to feast and be merry. Drinking is not as much a part of the event as it was decades ago, if only because of tougher drunk driving laws. New Years’ Day on the other hand, is a time to relax and enjoy the start of a promising new year....a new beginning. It is a time to be with family. So, enjoy everything about 2020....it only comes once in a decade.

January 3rd - Sleeping Day

celebrated on September 13, or on September 12 in leap years. Programmers are greeted with positive comments like “Happy Programmer’s Day” in some work environments on International Programmers’ Day. The observance is also mentioned among programming communities in online forums and social media, including on Facebook or Twitter.

January 13th - “Make Your Dream Come True” Day

“Make Your Dream Come True” Day gives you the opportunity to try to reach for your goals and dreams. Whatever your dreams are, they won’t come true until you put some efforts into it. So, today is the perfect opportunity to get up and take the first step in fulfilling your dreams. On this dreamy day, try doing something… anything, to get closer in achieving your dreams. With enough perseverance and effort, you’ll realize that dreams do come true! Favourite Songs of Dreamers: Somewhere Over the Rainbow and If I had a Million Dollars

YOUR COUNTRY’S NATIONAL DAY Surprisingly, January the 1st happens to be an important day for quite a number of countries. It’s the day where they celebrated their National Day or Independence Day. Here are some of them: January 1st - Cuba; Sudan; Haiti and Slovakia

Cuba

January 1st is the National Day of the Republic of Cuba, a country comprising of the islands of Cuba as well as Isla de la Juventud and several minor archipelagos. Cuba is located on the northern part of the Caribbean where the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. The Cuba Island is the largest group of islands in the Caribbean.

Sudan

Also on the 1st of January, Sudan gained independence from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Egypt in 1956. Sudan has a population of 43 million people and occupies a total area of 1,886,068 square kilometres (728,215 square miles). The capital is Khartoum, located at the convergence of the Blue and White Nile.

Haiti

The Haiti’s Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on January 1, 1804. This declaration marked Haiti’s becoming the first independent black nation in the western hemisphere. This declaration was later followed by an Independence Day speech from Dessalines - recited in Haitian Creole - in which he denounced France Creole. In particular, the declaration demands vengeance against the French White Creoles, who committed atrocities against the African-Haitian population.

No, you are not dreaming! But, perhaps you should be. Festival of Sleeping Day is today. After the heavy partying on New Year’s Eve, it is an opportunity to sleep in, snooze, doze, nap, and get over with the hangovers. Whether it’s all day, a full 8-hour, or just a short nap, try to enjoy every single moment of it!

January 5th - National Bird Day

Slovakia

January 14th - Dress Up Your Pet Day

Great news! You don’t have to wait until Halloween to dress up your pet. National Dress Up Your Pet Day gives you the opportunity to.... you guessed it! Dress up your pet! Some pets like to get dressed up while others don’t. Anyway, try to make something for them to wear. Or, go to a pet store and buy an outfit for them. It’s still wintertime, so something warm is best. Sorry, we don’t know how to dress up a goldfish (if that’s your pet)!

National Bird Day is celebrated on January 5th International Migratory Bird Day is observed on the 2nd Saturday of May each year. People love birds, and bird-watching is a favorite pastime for millions of people. With this popularity, it comes as no surprise that there is more than one day recognized to appreciate, and enjoy birds. We suggest you celebrate both of these days.

National Day for Slovakia, officially called as the Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the west and is mostly mountainous. The population is over 5.6 million and consists mostly of Slovaks. The capital and largest city is Bratislava.

January 16th - National Hat Day

International Programmers’ Day celebrates the positive changes that programmers make to improve our everyday lives. It is usually held on January 7, but is also popularly HUA HIN TODAY, 1 - 15 January 2020

National Hat Day is set aside to wear and enjoy a hat of your choice and style. Isn’t it great that hats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles? You’ve probably might even have your own collection already. Hats are used to make a statement, or to promote a cause or a product. Back in 1797, the introduction of the Top Hat almost caused a riot. The Top Hat was first worn by James Heatherington in London, England. As Heatherington strolled through the streets of London displaying his Top Hat, crowds gathered, and some people began to push and shove. Heatherington was fined for “going about in a manner that frightened timid people”. National Hat Day is not just about wearing your favourite headgear. It’s an opportunity to make a statement. We suggest you wear a number of different hats over the course

13 Thailand at Loggerheads over Plans to Ban Three Agrochemicals

Heated arguments continue to rage over the decision on November 27 by the National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC) to postpone the ban of Paraquat and Chlorpyrifos from the originally planned date of December 1 until June next year and to impose strict controls on Glyphosate instead of banning it outright. Supporters of the outright ban on the three chemicals have launched an online campaign on Change.org to gather signatures for a petition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and this had collected 53,000 signatures out of the targeted 75,000 as of the afternoon of December 14. The premier appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul – who had voiced his and his agency’s strong support for the ban on health grounds – as chair of the National Committee on Chemical Management Policy, while the deputy chair position is held by Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Srion. This committee, which is tasked with pushing forwards the master plans for safe chemical management – was apparently an attempt to balance the power with the NHSC, which is chaired by Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. As part of these master plans, the National Committee on Chemical Management Policy put into place a short-term action plan by proposing amendments to chemical management laws and regulations to boost the effectiveness of chemical management and Thailand’s competitive capacity. A sub-panel for legal development set up under this committee saw the Public Health Ministry’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pushing for a draft Chemical Act to replace the Hazardous Substances Act of B.E. 2535 (1992) and public

hearings on this draft legislation were held between August 26 and October 18, 2019. A source at the Agriculture Ministry said the measure to ban Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos and Glyphosate would also be submitted to the National Committee on Chemical Management Policy for consideration in 2020 before being passed on to the NHSC for further decision. Other chemicals would be banned in the same way if backed by empirical evidence on toxicity and harm to human health, the source added. It is therefore possible that Anutin could use his authority as chair of the National Committee on Chemical Management Policy to table the ban of all three chemicals and overturn the NHSC decision. The NHSC’s November 27 decision has already caused division in the public sector with those who backed the ban’s six-month postponement saying it was passed through a “resolution” while those who disagreed with the postponement and wanted the ban to take effect immediately, claimed the NHSC didn’t arrive at a proper or complete “resolution”. According to the NHSC, it was the permanent secretary to the Agriculture Ministry Anan Suwannarat who proposed a review of the NHSC’s October 22 resolution to ban all the three agrochemicals. Anan claimed a postponement of the ban was needed because more time was required to manage the remaining stock of 20,000-plus tonnes of the chemicals. The NHSC, which by now also had many new members, reviewed the arguments and reached a decision on November 27 to postpone the ban of Paraquat and Chlorpyrifos to next June and to impose a strict control over the use of Glyphosate. This latest decision means that Glyphosate

will maintain its previous Category 3 status, allowing it to be used, produced, sold, and imported/exported by trained and registered individuals. But it was how the NHSC reached its decision that provoked a dispute. Suriya insisted the resolution was legitimate because a resolution can be drawn up in many ways and checks were carried out among the members at the beginning of meeting, whilst those backing the ban claimed that the NHSC didn’t vote for a resolution. The argument didn’t go any further as Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Mananya Thaiset, who oversees the Department of Agriculture, put an end to it by signalling that the department would adhere to the NHSC’s October 22 resolution to ban all three chemicals in the meantime, claiming that a formal letter on the NHSC’s November 27 resolution from the Industry Ministry had yet to reach her. For its part, the Industry Ministry affirmed it is currently in the process of issuing a ministerial regulation for the ban of Paraquat and Chlorpyrifos after June 1, 2020 and the strict control of Glyphosate and this would be proposed to Suriya soon. A source said it was not known when this process will be done. In the meantime, the 686-organisation network supporting the ban on the three agrochemicals threatened to file lawsuits against Suriya – in his capacity as the NHSC chair – at both the Central Administrative Court and the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases if no state agency relevant to the NHSC asked the Council of State to assess the legality of the NHSC’s November 27 decision. The network also noted that the Industry Ministry had not yet issued the ministerial

regulation on the ban for publication in the Royal Gazette. The Network is therefore preparing information for the Office of the Ombudsman Thailand in order to maintain the ban on the three chemicals and will soon file a classaction suit against the NHSC on behalf of 110 victims of the three farm chemicals on the grounds that withholding the ban would damage health and the environment, according to leading member Bio Thai foundation director Witoon Lianchamroon. Witoon also said that relevant agencies should issue remedial measures as soon as possible over the ban postponement because without the clear measures in place, an excuse to keep postponing the paraquat ban could well occur. Witoon claimed that since 1992 farm pesticides have been exempted from import tax and value-added tax (VAT) with the result that the country has missed out on collecting Bt10 billion in taxes that should have been used for development. “I don’t think that any farmer would risk using agrochemicals if they had other choices. These alternatives are not a heavy burden for the government to shoulder and tax incentives that used to be given to chemical companies may need to be shifted to aid farmers,” he said. Witoon also urged the government to consider following the example of countries such as Denmark and Norway of taxing the chemicals based on toxicity. He added that he had heard the Fiscal Policy Office had studied such examples but had not proposed this for implementation in Thailand. Temporary Closure of the Bon Kai Intersection

Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul, Hua Hin mayor chaired a joint meeting between Hua Hin Municipality, Hua Hin Police Station and Mr. Witchakorn Amrapal of the Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Company together with representatives of the Hua Hin community to discuss the temporary closure of traffic due to the ongoing construction of the double track railway at the Bon Kai intersection (Soi Hua Hin 88) and nearby areas. The traffic lanes will be closed from the north of the intersection (which currently has 6 lanes), leaving only 2 lanes, allowing just a one-way traffic and banning cars coming from the east of the railway crossing. The vehicles coming from the west of the railway can cross the intersection only on one-way lane. This temporary closure of the Bon Kai intersection will last for about 4 - 5 months starting middle of January 2020. Mayor Wuttikul suggested that the one-way lane traffic plan be changed to a two-way lane so it could at least be a bit convenient for vehicles to pass through the intersection. He also advised to speed up the construction so it won’t take up to 5 months to complete. In addition, the

mayor requested to expand the road behind the Market Village Shopping Center that connects the railway intersection to Soi Hua Hin 94 (Soi Mae Kep) so it can be used as an alternative route in order to avoid passing through the intersection. After reviewing the plans and further discussions with the construction engineers, Mr. Witchakorn said that he would expedite the construction by working double time, both day and night in order to complete the construction within 2 and a half months. Throughout the construction, they will open a two-way lane for vehicles from each side of the intersection, and occasionally change it to a one-direction-at-a-time during heavy congestion. Before ending their discussions, mayor Wuttikul reiterate with the construction company to even speed up the construction and possibly make it shorter than 2 and half months. This will help the road travelers as well as benefit the community. The mayor also instructed the contractors to install traffic signs, warning signs, as well as safety lights around the construction site especially at night to avoid accidents.

Cystitis – An Uncomfortable Urinary Tract Infection

Infections that cause cystitis, either from bacteria, fungus, or even urinary tract infections (UTI) can be divided into two parts: - Infection in the upper urinary tract such as kidney infections which may have severe symptoms. - Infection in the lower urinary tract such as bladder infections, or commonly known as cystitis It is more common for cystitis to occur in women more than men. Statistics show that most bladder infection cases derive from local bacteria. Natural bacteria is preventive for many parts of the body by blocking other pathogens to prevent diseases or infection from occurring. However, it may cause illness or infection to other parts of the body. Bacteria that causes severe symptoms are mostly from E.coli and P.mirabilis. Causes of cystitis are mostly from other factors: 1. The use of toilet paper by wiping from behind to the front that may lead feces in contact with the vagina, which further directs the pathogen from anus to the frontal area as well. 2. Insufficient water intake that leads to non-urinating, causing an increase of bacteria in the bladder that stays for days instead of only 2-3 hours as it supposes to be. 3. Suppress of urination. 4. Post sexual activity habit – lack of cleaning after intercourse may lead to the growth of pathogen 5. Patients with a suppressed immune system, such as diabetes, have higher risks of UTIs.

6. Use of vaginal douching that may lead to a decrease of local bacteria, which lessen its capacity to prevent harmful pathogens. (Don’t forget that local bacteria prevents other pathogens from causing disease or infection in its area.) 7. Menopause - after menopause, the vagina is more vulnerable to infection. It is highly recommended to avoid or prevent no. 1-6 from occurring to prevent bladder infection. The common symptoms of cystitis may include: • A strong, persistent urge to urinate with a burning sensation. • Pelvic pain • Urine that appears cloudy with a strong smell, or has a sign of blood in the urine • Unexplained chills and fever when pathogens in the bladder release toxins. Therefore, if you notice any of these symptoms, it is recommended that urine tests be conducted a preliminary diagnosis. If the result shows a high white blood cell count or high bacteria, the doctor may have you do swab culture to check the type of pathogen and its response to medication. This will help in obtaining a correct diagnosis with higher accuracy and treatment. Note: Do not try self-medication as misuse of medicine might make pathogen resistant to medication. Nevertheless, cystitis can be prevented by avoiding the causes described. If the infection occurs, it is crucial to take any necessary measures to stop the infection from spreading to the upper part of the kidney as it may cause shock symptoms that lead to death. 22 Gum Trees; the Diverse Eucalyptus

The River Redgum and Flooded Gum are the main eucalyptus species in Thailand. This is a diverse plant genus with more than 700 species native to Australia and Indonesia as well the entire South East Asia region.

The genus name Eucalyptus is based on the hood-like closed calyx which hides the stamens and pistils during the bud stage. The name comes from the Greek words eu “beautiful, good” and kalyptos, “hidden”. The first publication about the species was in 1788 by the French botanist Charles Louis L’Héritier de Brutelle when he worked in London. Most Eucalyptus species are relatively fast growing, high, evergreen trees and shrubs. One giant eucalyptus species (Eucalyptus Regnans) has been measured with a height of 97 metres and a trunk circumference of 20 metres in Tasmania. This species is known variously as mountain ash, swamp gum, or stringy gum. It is the tallest species of flowering plant and one of the tallest trees in the world, second to the coast redwood Sequoia sempervirens.

Appearance

The appearance of the bark of eucalyptus trees varies throughout their lifespan. Every year a new layer of bark is grown to broaden their trunk to some extent. In some species, the outermost layer dies and appears as long strips or in different sized flakes which may fall from the tree.

However, the dead bark can simply remain on the tree. Due to weathering this bark gets an aged appearance. On many other species, known as half-barks and blackbutts, the dead bark is retained only in the lower part of the trunk or as a large, black accumulation at the base of the tree. The smooth, upper and younger bark of half-barks or other smoothbarked eucalyptus species may show remarkable and highly interesting colours. Bark cells are able to photosynthesize in the absence of foliage. This allows the tree to grow in less-than-ideal climates, in addition to providing a better chance of recovery from damage sustained to its leaves in an event such as a fire. The young leaves and the leaves on older trees differ markedly in most species. For example, often the adult leaves sickle or heart shaped. Most leaves are leathery. The leaf blade is often rotated 90 degrees to provide less of a target for the high irradiation.

Fruits of Eucalyptus globulus

Distribution

Eucalptus have their home in Australia, including Tasmania, and the eastern half of Indonesia. Today, however, some species grow well in many other subtropical areas of the world (e.g.Thailand). In Australia the tree accounts of 70% of total tree species. No other continent has such a strongly dominated genus by a single species of trees.

In several regions of the world, where eucalypts are not native, eucalyptus are grown for their fast growth and good quality wood. Examples of such regions are Southern Europe and South Africa, South East Asia e.g. Thailand

Some diverse uses

Eucalypts are used both for obtaining strong-smelling essential oils as well as for timber. They are also the fodder plants of koalas and some other marsupial mammals; but for many other animals they are poisonous. Koalas prefer to eat old leaves where the toxins are not as concentrated as in the young shoots and leaves. Essential oil is obtained through the steam distillation of leaves and branches. There are more than 50 species of eucalyptus which produce essential oils which differ in their chemical composition and physiological effects. Eucalyptus globulus is used against coughs, flu (influenza)or hoarseness. Eucalyptus sweets (4 to 6 drops of eucalyptus oil (200 mg) on a lump of sugar) may be take orally or inhalents (20 drops) from the vapours of a hot water bath may use eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus is used against infections, fever, an upset stomach and to help loosen coughs. The leaf is also used for treating respiratory tract infections, whooping cough, asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, osteoarthritis, joint pain (rheumatism), acne, wounds, poorly healing ulcers, burns, bacterial dysentery, ringworms, liver and gallbladder problems, loss of appetite, and cancer. Eucalyptus oil should not be taken by mouth or applied to the skin full-strength. It must be diluted for safety. The diluted oil is taken by mouth for pain and swelling (inflammation) of respiratory tract mucous membranes, coughs, bronchitis, sinus pain and inflammation, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory infections. Diluted eucalyptus oil is applied directly to the skin for pain and swelling of respiratory tract mucous membranes, joint pain, genital herpes, and nasal stuffiness. It is also used as an insect repellent. In dentistry, eucalyptus oil is included in products used as sealers and solvents for root canal fillings. In foods, dried eucalyptus leaf is used as a flavoring agent. Eucalyptus oil is used as a fragrance in perfumes and cosmetics. It is also used as a mouthwash, antiseptic, liniment and ointment, and in toothpaste, cough drops, and lozenges. Eucalyptus leaf contains chemicals that might help control blood sugar. It may also combat bacteria and fungi. Eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that might help fight pain and inflammation and block chemicals that cause asthma.

6 30 Jürgen Klopp signs new Liverpool deal

Birmingham City

In October, world governing body Fifa said it wanted to expand the Club World Cup to 24 sides for 2021, plans opposed by its European counterpart Uefa. Fifa has also held private discussions about a global Super League, which would see clubs stop playing in their own domestic leagues to take part. “I struggle to see why an English team would need to leave,” Ferguson said.

Pep denies Man City exit clause

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has signed a new deal with the club that will run until 2024. Klopp said he agreed to a new contract to help the club attract their main transfer targets and to create a lasting legacy at Anfield. He will become the club’s longest-serving manager since Bob Paisley by the end of his third contract. Klopp, who joined the Reds in October 2015, signed a new six-year contract in July 2016 and that has now been extended further. Liverpool won the Champions League under the German last season and finished second in the Premier League. They lead the top flight this season and have an eight-point lead in pursuit of a first league title since 1990.

Birmingham City has appointed Pep Clotet as their new head coach, six months after he took over as interim boss of the Championship club. The Spaniard was assistant to Garry Monk, who was sacked in June after 15 months with the club.

League Two side Crawley Town

Is Jamie Vardy the best striker in Europe?

With a shot-conversion rate better than anybody in Europe’s top five leagues and having become more efficient than ever courtesy of Brendan Rodgers’ new tactics, Jamie Vardy seems to be in the form of his life. His club Leicester, shock champions four seasons ago, are flying again in the Premier League, thanks in large part to a formidable scoring run from the ex-England man. So is Vardy playing better than ever? Is he, even, the best striker in Europe? “He’s too good, he’s ridiculous. He gets quicker and quicker at 33 years of age,” said BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Clinton Morrison. Vardy is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with 16 goals in as many games, including 11 in his past eight - five clear of second-placed Tammy Abraham of Chelsea. Only Lazio’s Ciro Immobile - with 17 has scored more in Europe’s top five leagues this season..

Managerial Ins & Outs

Crawley Town have parted company with head coach Gabriele Cioffi by mutual consent. The 44-year-old Italian had been in charge of the West Sussex club since September 2018 when he succeeded Harry Kewell, who had moved to Notts County. Cioffi’s departure from The People’s Pension Stadium follows a run of one just one win in 11 league games. His assistant Edu Rubio has been appointed as interim head coach of the Reds, who are 17th in the table.

Mansfield Town

Sir Alex Ferguson questions FIFA’s planned Global Super League

Everton finally parted company with Portuguese manager Marco Silva following a run of poor Premiership performances. Silva was the 4th top-flight manager to be sacked in a short 16 day span, with Quique Flores from Watford on December 1, Unai Emery of Arsenal on 29 November and Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham Hotspur on 19 November. HUA HIN TODAY, 1 - 15 January 2020

James Milner signs contract extension until 2022 Pep Guardiola says it is “not true” he has a contract clause allowing him to leave Manchester City next summer. The manager, 48, has won two Premier League titles since joining City in 2016, and is contracted to 2021. City completed an unprecedented domestic treble last season, but are now 14 points behind leaders Liverpool at the time of writing. Responding to reports of a contract clause, Guardiola said: “No. It is not true. I spoke a few weeks ago about my intentions with the club.” Guardiola, whose side visit Arsenal said in November that he was “happy at the club” and “wants to stay to live and work in Manchester”. City are currently third in the Premier League, having lost four out of 16 matches, as many top-flight defeats as they suffered throughout the whole of last season, and two more than they endured in 2017-18. Guardiola said the club are not planning to make any January signings, despite being linked with Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake. “The players we started the season with we are going to finish with,” he said. “We will look in the summer.”

UEFA to push for VAR changes

The use of video assistant referees for marginal offside decisions could be amended next season if a joint bid by UEFA and the home nations’ FAs succeeds. The European governing body’s president Aleksander Ceferin told the Times there were issues with the “precision” of artificial lines drawn on the pitch to help make decisions. Mansfu=ield Town have sacked manager John Dempster after seven months in charge. The Stags have not won a league game since 26 October and are six games without a win in all competitions. Dempster’s last game in charge was Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Crewe, which left the club 18th in League Two and 12 points below the play-off spots.

U E FA w i l l wo r k w i t h t h e fo u r associations, which each has a vote on the board of lawmakers, the International FA Board (Ifab). Any changes to the laws would be made at Ifab’s annual general meeting in Belfast on 29 February. At a meeting earlier this month, Ifab discussed the use of VAR and said there was “a growing demand for more immediate information about the referee’s final decision”.

Ferrari chief admits to conversations with Hamilton

Sir Alex Ferguson has questioned why English teams would want to be part of a proposed global Super League.

Ferrari chief executive officer Louis Carey Camilleri said at a media lunch that Hamilton has had “conversations” with chairman John Elkann. Camilleri said Ferrari were “very flattered Lewis in particular, and other drivers, want to join us”. “It’s totally premature - we’ll look at our options at the appropriate time and see what is the best fit,” he added.

Ferrari admit they have held talks with world champion Lewis Hamilton about joining them in the future.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has agreed to a contract extension to stay at the Premier League leaders until 2022. The 33-year-old joined the Reds on a free transfer from Manchester City in June 2015 and is in the final season of his present deal. He won the Champions League with Liverpool last season, adding a Super Cup winners’ medal in August. “This was obviously the ideal fit for me - stay and play at the highest level as long as I can,” Milner said. “There’s a long, long way to go, but we’ll keep striving to keep improving and getting success for this club”.

Football Gossip

Atletico Madrid are prepared to lower their asking price for Spain midfielder Saul Niguez to £85m, putting Manchester United on alert. RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann has held transfer talks with Red Bull Salzburg’s Norway international striker Erling Haaland, linked with a January move to Manchester United. Bordeaux boss Paulo Sousa, who had brief spells in charge at QPR, Swansea and Leicester, says he is trying not to think too much about his future after a surprise link with the Arsenal managerial vacancy. Jurgen Klopp has hinted Liverpool could be back in the market for more Red Bull Salzburg players after landing Japan winger Takumi Minamino, 24, before the January transfer window. Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has already turned down job offers from Everton and two Chinese sides. Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, 28, wants to leave the west London club but will ignore the wishes of France team-mate Ousmane Dembele, 22, and seek a move to Juventus or Real Madrid rather than Barcelona. Manchester United are considering a move for Napoli’s Belgium forward Dries Mertens, 32. Former Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard, 28, has promised to return to Stamford Bridge once his spell at Real Madrid ends. Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has vowed to respect Paris St-Germain’s relationship with Kylian Mbappe, 20, amid rumours the France striker is not happy at the club. Genk’s Norway midfielder Sander Berge, 21, has insisted his head is in the right place, despite the consistent rumours surrounding a move to Liverpool.

317 Anthony Joshua: Fury or Wilder fight must happen in 2020

Unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua says a fight with Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder “has to happen in 2020”. Britain’s Joshua reclaimed his IBF, WBA and WBO titles from Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. WBC champion Deontay Wilder is scheduled for a rematch with Britain’s Tyson Fury on 22 February. “I feel like it’s ‘Lord of the Rings’, the last ring, let’s get it on, let’s make history,” said Joshua, 30. Speaking on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, he added: “It has to happen in 2020, we’re in the same division, same era, if these guys want to make history, especially Wilder because he has the last belt. By defeating Ruiz, Joshua joined a small cluster of men including Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson to have reclaimed the world heavyweight title.“

Francesca Schiavone reveals she beat cancer

Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone has revealed she has successfully overcome cancer. The 39-year-old became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam with her 2010 Roland Garros triumph and won eight titles before retiring in 2018. Schiavone, who has not revealed the type of cancer diagnosed, said: “I did chemotherapy, I fought a tough battle and now I am still breathing.

“I have won this fight. And now I am back in action.” In a short video on Instagram, Schiavone added: “Hi everyone, upon seven-eight months of silence from social media and from the world, I wish to share with you what happened to me. A cancer had been diagnosed to me.” Having defeated Australia’s Samantha Stosur in the 2010 French Open final, Schiavone reached a career best fourth in the world rankings in January 2011. Later that year she came close to defending her French title but lost to China’s Li Na in the Paris final.

Former British cycling medic has “case to answer”

Dr Richard Freeman has failed in his bid to have four remaining charges thrown out at his medical tribunal. The former British Cycling and Team Sky medic has admitted 18 of 22 charges against him to determine whether he is fit to practise. They include him ordering testosterone - but he denies it was to help boost an athlete’s performance. After two days of deliberation the tribunal chair said there was a “case to answer for all outstanding matters”. Freeman is accused of ordering 30 sachets of Testogel to British Cycling headquarters in 2011 knowing or believing it was to enhance intended to enhance an athlete’s performance. The medic, who is yet to give evidence at the tribunal, claims the delivery was for former British Cycling performance director Shane Sutton, a claim the Australian denies.

Saudi Arabia to host first Ladies European Tour golf event

Saudi Arabia will host its first women’s tournament in March 2020 when it stages a Ladies European Tour event. A prize fund of $1m (£750,000) will be on offer at The Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in Jeddah. “It is an honour for the Tour to be part of history,” said the LET’s acting chief executive Alexandra Armas. “This will be a fantastic experience.” Britain’s Carly Booth, Amy Boulden and Rachel Drummond are among players named as ambassadors for the event. Three-time Tour winner Booth said: “I have visited Saudi Arabia on a number of occasions and been lucky enough to spend some time teaching local women and girls how to play; they have been so enthusiastic and I am sure that seeing professional golfers compete in their country will inspire them to take up the game and strive for their dreams.”

Don’t Miss Those Short Putts!

“He missed short putts because of the uproar of butterflies in the adjoining meadows.” P.G. Wodehouse Stroke through the ball. Putting mechanics are for the practice green and most golfers tend to ease up on short putts. Don’t ease up putt right through the ball. Stand with your eyes over the ball. If there was only one rule for sinking 4 foot putts it would be, get your eyes over the ball. This simplifies things enormously for all golfers. Focus on the first inch. Be painstaking about that first inch. At address keep your eyes riveted on the first inch and don’t move them until you’re ball is one inch past impact.

You can complain about slow greens, grainy surfaces, poor caddies, and whatever you can think of to blame for poor putting. However, none of these are likely to be the cause for golf putting woes. Average golfers probably face 4 foot putts 10-15 times a round. Master putting from this range and you’ll dramatically cut your scores. Making 4 footers isn’t as easy as it sounds, not even for world’s best. Phil Mickelson did his chances no good after missing a tiny 22-inch putt during the first round of the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach in California. Former Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger, commentating for American TV, said the unbelievable missed putt was the “shortest missed putt of any player on this tour ever”. Mickelson’s calamitous moment came on the 412 yard par-4 third hole when he was trying to make par. He eventually tapped in for a bogey - but left fans shocked. One wrote: “Phil Mickelson just missed a putt from a foot for par; umphh golf!” Legendary golfer Bobby Jones once said that when it all comes down to one shot, nothing is more frightening than having to make a short putt. The thought of a putt less than 3 feet creates an expectation that you should make it. But because you place enormous pressure on yourself that you can’t miss the short ones, you end up sabotaging your effort. Here are some tips so that you don’t miss short putts: Think speed more than line. Golfers tend to focus on line with short putts. But speed is more important. Putt aggressively, but not too aggressively so that your ball goes to the back of the cup. Hit straight. If your putt looks straight, hit middle of the cup. If you start the putt straight, you have a margin on either side. If the putt breaks right or left, you will still have margin on one side. So hit the putt straight and don’t worry about giving up the hole.

A remedy for pulling or pushing short putts There’s a good chance you tend to pull or push short putts, making them anything but automatic. Research indicates that more than 70 percent of everyday players unwittingly pull the putter head across the target line and to the left, causing these frustrating misses. To remedy this mistake, find a flat spot on the practice green that’s one foot away from the hole and hit some putts, swinging the putter head over the centre of the hole on your through-stroke. Strike a dozen putts this way, passing the putter straight over the cup and not letting it veer to the left. Next, hit three-footers the same way and follow through toward the centre of the hole. Do this drill for five minutes before each round and you’ll cut way down on short misses. Missing a short putt at the end of the day may be devastating, but many golfers fear the short putt on their first hole, because if they miss they are doomed to a day of shattered confidence. What ensues is a series of “hit and hope” strokes and a high score. Take the time to be thorough in going through your pre-putt routine and never take a short putt for granted. This doesn’t mean to be tedious or delay play, but most missed short putts are hurried or missed through carelessness versus anxiety or fear-ridden strokes. HUA HIN TODAY, 1 - 15 January 2020

12 36 International Team Endures Heart-breaking Defeat in the Presidents Cup

The International Team suffered a gut-wrenching 14-16 loss in the Presidents Cup on December 15th after the United States Team staged an historic fightback in the Singles session, led by playing captain Tiger Woods. Woods, who put himself in the top match at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club, defeated the previously undefeated Abraham Ancer 3 and 2 which rallied his men to come from two points back to win the session 8-4. It was the first time a team has won the Presidents Cup when trailing into Sunday’s Singles. Already a holder of 82 PGA TOUR victories, the 43-year Woods surpassed Phil Mickelson for the most wins in Presidents Cup history with 27 and was undefeated for the second time in the event, going 3-0 this week. He was 5-0 in 2009. Leading 10-8 into the final day after some inspired performances in the Four-Ball and Foursomes sessions, the International Team, captained by Ernie Els, could not prevent the U.S. juggernaut from claiming its eighth straight Presidents Cup victory, with Matt Kuchar clinching the winning half point with a tie with Louis Oosthuizen in the penultimate match. Korea’s Sungjae Im enjoyed a successful Presidents Cup debut by contributing 3.5 points which included an impressive 4 and

3 victory over reigning U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland in the Singles which for a while provided the International Team with a glimmer of hope. Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama let slip a 4-up lead through 10

holes in the second match of the day against Tony Finau to settle for a tie while China’s Haotong Li went down 4 and 3 to World No. 2 Dustin Johnson. Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan fell 4 and 2 to Patrick Reed as his debut

ended with a 2-1-0 record. Els was proud with how his International Team, which featured seven rookies, battled against the powerful American side. “It’s been an incredible week. The players were just incredible. They were open for a new formula, so to speak, and embraced what I said to them, and you know, here we are. You know, we lost 16-14, and you know, we’ve got to swallow that,” said the South African legend. “But great strides were made, especially in our team play. I really felt that our team play was really the core of our team, and that never was previously. We never felt like we could play Foursomes or Four-Ball together as a team. We did that well. I think the U.S. Team, and I think you guys (media), and the people around the world will look at these (International) guys in a different way. If you compare our team on paper with other teams in other sport, you would have laughed us out of the building. But we gave it a hell of a go and we came mightily close to winning and upsetting one of the greatest golf teams of all time.“

The Pros Getting It Wrong – ‘Play the Course as you Find it!’

Patrick Reed found himself embroiled in a rules controversy during the third round of the December 2019 Hero World Challenge, with the former Masters champion issued with a two-stroke penalty for improving his lie in a sanded waste area. Footage of Reed’s actions on the 11th hole at Albany resulted in the rules officials informing the 29-year-old of his punishment during a five-minute post-round discussion.

Reed claimed to have been totally unaware of the affair until that point. The Rules of Golf allow players to ground their club in waste areas but they

cannot improve their capability to play a shot by “removing or pressing down sand or loose soil.” Rule 8 covers a central principle of the game: “play the course as you find it.” When the player’s ball comes to rest, he or she normally has to accept the conditions affecting the stroke and not improve them before playing the ball. To support this principle the Rule restricts what a player may do to improve any of these protected “conditions affecting the stroke ” (anywhere on or off the course) for the next stroke the player will make: Reed broke Rule 8.1a4, which states that golfers cannot “Remove or press down sand or loose soil” to improve the conditions affecting the stroke. Reed remained adamant he did nothing wrong knowingly and that a single camera angle, from behind and which twice shows the Texan flicking sand during practice swings, is deceptive. “It was in a full footprint and I felt my club was that far behind the ball when I was taking a practice swing,” Reed said. “It was obviously hitting a bit of sand, though I didn’t feel any drag. But when they brought it up for me [on the TV] I definitely saw it drag and, because of that, it is a two-shot penalty even though I didn’t feel like it would have affected my lie. “I don’t ever put the club directly behind the ball in a situation like that as I am scared of it moving. Intent is a big part but with only one camera angle it is a 50-50 battle when you are being assessed for anything like that. I told them there was no intent and it was far enough away from the ball, but they didn’t HUA HIN TODAY, 1 - 15 January 2020

have another camera angle to show that and they felt it might have been improving the lie.” Reed, who was three shots from the lead held by Gary Woodland in the Bahamas with 18 holes to play, appeared perfectly calm when discussing the scenario. “At the end of the day you have got to let things roll off your shoulders and I still have one round to play tomorrow,” he said. “If I stew over something, it is my word against their word and because they only have one camera angle, I don’t really have a choice. After seeing it brush some sand, they

thought that was a breach and, in the Rules of Golf, if you improve your lie, it is a penalty. At the end of the day you have to accept it and move on.” Slugger White, the PGA Tour’s vicepresident of rules and competitions, who issued Reed with the two strokes. He said: “I don’t know if he could have seen it as clearly as we did but he could not have been a better gentleman. Intent would not matter here, that’s not in the mix.”

14 38 Getting a Grip on Your Game What are the Best Golf Shoes?

that a spikeless shoe doesn’t quite allow their feet to grip the turf all the way through the swing. You don’t want to feel like your feet are always about to slip out from under you while swinging, so it’s probably best to err on the side of more grip rather than less. One of the main points to consider when deciding what style of shoes to select is the playing conditions you typically face on the course. Obviously, those who play on wet golf courses are going to need more traction than those playing on dry grass most of the time.

The original Soft spike golf shoes were introduced in 1993, primarily because of damage caused by traditional metal spikes to greens and, not coincidentally, wooden bridges, walkways, clubhouse carpets and floors. Not long after, courses began banning metal spikes. Today, they are history; except for some PGA Tour pros, including Tiger Woods. In general, putting surfaces are in far better condition today than they were 30 years ago, and part of that improvement can be attributed to the death of the metal spike. Much like metal spikes, soft spikes are designed to have several spikes inserted into the sole of the shoe in a variety of locations. When all of the spikes are in place, the shoe should offer excellent traction for the player as he or she moves around the course.

replaced periodically. This is a relatively inexpensive task, but one that you need to remember if you hope to maintain traction moving forward. Today, the main alternative to soft spikes is going with a spikeless shoe. Spikeless golf shoes include a variety of traction elements rather than replaceable spikes or ‘cleats’ on the sole of the shoe to help the player maintain his or her footing. These little bumps and ridges may not look like much, but are promoted as allowing the player to swing just as aggressively as he or she would when playing in a soft spike shoe.

Do spiked shoes offer a better grip?

Oversized clawed cleats were banned on some courses because of damage to greens While soft spikes are a great option for many golfers, they will wear out over time, especially if you frequently walk on hard surfaces like parking lots and cart paths. To make sure you get the most out of your soft spiked shoes, you’ll want to have the spikes

To contradict that claim, a recent study has found that amateur golfers, both low and high handicappers, are sacrificing a significant amount of driving distance based upon what they are wearing on their feet. The study was conducted PGA of America pro Eric Alpenfels and Dr. Bob Christina, Emeritus Professor of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina. The study asked 28 golfers, 14 low-handicappers (average 3.52) and 14 high-handicappers (average 15.26), to hit five drivers each wearing removable spike golf shoes and spikeless golf shoes. The golfers warmed up and then they hit five warm-up drives each. From there, each golfer hit 10 measured drives toward a simulated 34-yard wide fairway. Golfers hit five drives in cleated shoes, took a twominute break, and then hit five drives in spikeless shoes.

The golfers’ average carry distance was 4.35 yards longer when wearing replaceable cleats. The golfers’ average ball speed was faster and more consistent with replaceable cleats. “This study reinforced what we believed about the benefits of wearing replaceable cleats,” John Hohman, senior vice president of marketing for Pride Sports, said. “Driving distance and accuracy are key aspects of improving your scores, and the data provided by this study shows that your footwear choice absolutely makes a difference to your swing.” “The spiked shoes provided better grip with the ground and a more solid lower-body foundation, which produced higher-quality driver swings,” Alpenfels said. “The swings in spiked footwear were more efficient at translating clubhead speed into ball speed, because of more centred contact between the clubhead and the ball.” The study is definitely something to consider when making your next shoe purchase although the specific style of the spikeless shoes was not revealed, an obvious consideration. Are all spikeless shoes the same? However there are a couple potential arguments in favour of the spikeless shoe style. First, you don’t have to worry about the spikes wearing out and needing replacement. Some golfers seem to find these kinds of shoes more comfortable (and fashionable), which is important considering you spend four hours or more on your feet during most rounds of golf. However if there are no spikes to replace, there isn’t anything you can do about regaining lost traction if the soles of your shoes start to smooth out over time. It’s possible that you’ll wind up needing to replace your shoes sooner as the only option. Golfers who often walk on hard surfaces, whether that is on cart tracks, perhaps across the car park or around at the 19th hole, may most realise this necessity. Th e o t h e r p o ss i b l e d raw b a c k , highlighted by the study we have described, is simply not getting as much traction as you would with soft spikes. Some golfers need more traction than others and you may find

Ricky Fowler’s ‘hi-top’s’ have raised some eyebrows If you are a serious golfer who likes to play rounds throughout the year, including during Thailand’s wetter seasons, there is a good chance you’ll need more than one pair of shoes anyway. So why not pick up one of each and give yourself the option to pick the right one for each round? This is an appealing plan for a couple of reasons. First, you will be able to adjust your footwear choice based on the weather at hand. If you are headed out for a round on a rainy day, you may decide to reach for the pair of shoes with the soft spikes for a little extra grip. On the other hand, if there’s no rain in sight, you may decide that the spikeless model will be more comfortable. Another benefit of owning two pairs of golf shoes is not needing to break in a new pair immediately when an old pair has reached the ‘used-by’ date. While you easily pick up a new pair, they won’t be broken in. You may be uncomfortable when playing your upcoming rounds or have blister trouble. If you were rotating two pairs of shoes, it’s unlikely that both of those pairs would fail at the same time, so you could rely on the one good pair then break in the new shoes slowly by wearing them for a few range sessions before you head out to the course. For the serious golfer, it makes a lot of sense to have two pairs of golf shoes on hand and available, so why not have one with soft spikes and one with a spikeless design?

There will be a very warm welcome for you here at the Majestic Creek Golf Club and Resort and we look forward to seeing you soon.

39 15 Discovering Khao Tao – Hua Hin’s Relaxed yet Invigorating Southern Village

Many residents and frequent visitors to Hua Hin began their Thailand experience and love of the culture, lifestyle, climate and natural attractions of the country by exploring Bangkok. However when that burgeoning metropolis becomes too overwhelming, they explore further afield looking for a more peaceful and relaxed destination.

Hua Hin becomes the choice for those looking for a family friendly destination; being drawn to the beach lifestyle but still accessible to the ‘Big Mango’. However, central Hua Hin has its own urban pressures and that’s when the emerging location of Khao Tao beckons. Khao Tao is not to be confused with the diving island of Koh Tao which is much further south off the Chumphon coast. The idyllic village setting of Khao Tao is a mere 12 kilometres from Hua Hin but with an ambiance of its own. For those who want to escape Hua-Hin’s relatively busy ‘city centre’, this is a place for you to discover. Take Phetchakasem Road, the main highway south from Hua Hin, past Ratchabhakti Park featuring the massive statues of Thailand’s great kings of the Chakri Dynasty. Soon after, Soi 101 is the entrance road which becomes Khao Tao Road. Once that entry road is taken towards the coast and after crossing the railway line, you’ll begin to experience the Khao Tao village ambiance.

There are a number of condo developments at the northern entry but they have remained separate from the main settlement. Towards the village, the entry road passes by the local school and temple as well as many small restaurants and coffee shops. An early browsing opportunity can be found at a royal project where silk weaving by local villages on hand operated looms is a traditional niche industry. A little further on and the road meanders past small lanes with low density housing which provides easy access to the main wide sandy beach. A scenic lake on the other side of the road now comes into view. The lake was formed when a reservoir was built as the first royal initiative for sustainable water management. This royal connection resulted in an off-shore pavilion being built to celebrate the King’s 90th birthday anniversary on 5th December 2017. There is an opportunity to sit at a lakeside bench and ponder this monument, casual fishermen, walkers or joggers who may circumnavigate the lake along on a wide circling path. You may be also be offered the chance to release some fish fingerlings as a traditional way to earn merit and good luck apart from maintaining the lake fish stock. The area is usually not too busy although a bus load of tourists can appear on weekends or holidays. There is also a weekly ‘walking street market’ provided by local vendors and entertainers. The lake is a spectacular venue for the annual Loy Krathong Festival each November as candle lit floats provide an amazing evening vista across the still waters. At the end of this road the Khao Tao fishing enclave becomes an opportunity to discover the workings of the traditional Thai fishing industry with the freshest seafood you will ever find on offer. For many the highlight of a visit is to explore the Khao Tao temple complex with its Chinese influence and walkways past man-made caves, statues, shrines and viewpoints. At the lower level the final viewpoint features a turtle statue overlooking the bay and offshore islands. Khao Thao may be translated as ‘turtle hill’ in recognition of the rocky outcrop overlooking which provides the backdrop towering over these temples (khao = mountain, tao = turtle).

The more adventurous and physically able may choose to climb to the higher levels where a giant golden Buddha statue commands even more extensive views north and south towards the secluded Sai Noi Beach. Returning back along the main entry road you may wish to turn inland (Pharatchadamri Road) behind the lake and head south towards the cove of Sai Noi beach behind the Khao Tao hill. Just a little further and you will reach the Pranburi Forest Park or perhaps the nearby Korea Hua Hin Golf Course. Along the way you’ll pass a number of luxurious European styled villa complexes popular with retired or holidaying foreigners who are have found their scenic place in Thailand to relax, recharge the batteries and enjoy all the benefits that this piece of Thai paradise offers. Khao Tao is rapidly becoming known as a relaxing vacation or retirement location south of the busier Hua Hin. It is destined to retain the natural surroundings and the relaxed yet invigorating lifestyle barely affected by modern developments. Discovering Khao Tao is another way to appreciate how the region has so much to offer.

Hua Hin, Cha-Am, Pranburi

The Spirit of a Bright Christmas

Christmas is the time of the year where family, friends and co-workers got together and share their special moments of joy and happiness On December 14 Dusit Thani Hua Hin celebrated its 29th year anniversary as well as marking the beginning of this year’s festive season. The hotel staffs had put up a spectacular show “Santarella” by the garden’s lake which all the guests were truly amazed by their performance.

Mr. Kobchai Boonorana, governor of Petchburi, together with his wife Mrs. Saichon had formally lit up the Christmas lights in the garden to commemorate the start of the holiday season. Honourable guests from various private sectors, members of the Business and Tourism Association Club of Hua Hin - Cha-am and reporters from news agency attended the lighting ceremony followed by an exclusive dinner at the seaside restaurant. During the festive celebration, Dusit Thani had also organised 2 memorable events (Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve Party) which made the management and hotel staffs overwhelmed and satisfied from the effort they’ve put in to.

Being around for almost three decades, Dusit Thani Hua Hin continues to uphold their incomparable tradition in service and an impeccable style of home comfort. 2 42 Hua Hin’s Festive Season Arrives at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin In addition to the festivities, the hotel also continued its sharing tradition of providing support to Hua Hin’s local community, for which the hotel raised a total of over Baht 149,350 to sponsor Christmas presents for underprivileged students from four municipal schools in Hua Hin.

Nothing spreads festive cheer and holiday spirit in Hua Hin quite like Centara Grand Hua Hin’s time-honoured tradition, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, set to mark the official beginning of the holiday season with some of the unique essence of magic the iconic hotel is famous for. The season’s festivities in Hua Hin recently kicked off as Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin welcomed the most wonderful time of the year in grand style with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, complete with indulgent treats, festive refreshments and traditional carols. Well-attended by many familiar members of Hua Hin society and the hotel’s distinguished guests, this year’s ceremony was celebrated as guests joined in the countdown to the switching on of the first lights, led by Resident Manager Jan Weisheit and the hotel’s management team. With the ceremony’s fairy-tale inspired theme, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin boasted one of the best festive scenes in town as its award-winning Topiary Garden was set aglow and transformed into a magical wonderland, showcasing the already stunning landscape with outdoor Christmas decorations. Some remarkable highlights included the hotel’s symbolic elephant-shaped topiary, “Khun

Chokedee”, as well as reindeer and many other topiary creatures — all impressively dressed with nearly one million extraordinary fairy lights twinkling all over. The evening continued with the glorious sounds of the season from traditional carols performed live as guests enjoyed a special accompaniment of delightful canapés and evening drinks to ensure a leisurely, joyous evening.

A Breakfast of Champions: Thai style

Hua Hin has so many places to start the day with breakfast from 5 star hotel buffets to little cafés tucked in the back streets; however one of the joys of eating Thai Food is at breakfast time. Getting up early and exploring the streets or the local market, you will find some great options to get your day started on the right foot. Many Thai dishes can be eaten throughout the day but below are some of the ones most popular in the morning. What makes a good breakfast? That is certainly a difficult question, as everyone has a different version of what is good. Normally, a breakfast meal would have a combination of carbs, cereals or bread, plus proteins, fruit and a hot drink. In Thailand, where breakfast is known as Aa-haan Chao (literally morning food), it’s quite common to have Gai Yaang, grilled chicken, or Muu Bping, pork skewers and sticky rice; you get your protein, carbs and a great flavour hit, but here are some other dishes to put on your morning dining list.

Johk, or rice congee, is very popular amongst Thais. With its origins firmly rooted in China, this dish has it all with rice, pork balls, Asian celery and fresh ginger, plus the vendor may add fried garlic, coriander and a soft-boiled egg. You then flavour the broth up with soy sauce, white pepper, chilli, sugar and/or vinegar.

You will usually find the same vendor also doing a rice soup called Khao Dtom. This is a soup where the rice is still whole and various types of proteins are added to the soup. You will also see many locals eating Gao Lao, which is basically a Guay Dtieow noodle soup without the noodles. For breakfast, you will see it served with a bowl of rice on the side instead. This is a great way to eat, as you control how much rice you eat.

For those who like a lighter breakfast, Thai donuts are absolutely delicious. Bpaa Thong Gor are normally light and fluffy, a little crispy on the outside, which is great dipped in the condensed milk provided or the vibrant green pandan dip. These little morsels can come either salty or sweet depending on the recipe of the vendor. Most people will have these with a Café Boran, traditional Thai coffee, or they are also fantastic dunked in a Johk.

Steamed buns known as Saa-laa-bpao are also a great breakfast option. These also originate from China, like much of Thailand’s street food. They can be plain or have a tasty minced pork filling and are often served with hot jasmine tea. If you have a sweet tooth, you will also see Khanom Krok being cooked on the side of the road or in markets. These are small coconut milk puddings cooked in a special hot pan. These little puddings are sometimes served plain or have sweet corn or chives added. They are best eaten hot, straight off the pan.

For those high protein, high engerised breakfast eaters, you must try a Khai Luak. It is usually two soft boiled eggs served in a shot glass; you season it with Maggi and white pepper, stir and drink it down in one go. If you need an energy boost, then this is the breakfast item for you.

455 Satay: A Thai or Indonesian Invention?

When thinking about street food, the humble satay is one of the most popular choices, as it is so easy to eat, extremely delicious and very affordable. Served straight from the grill and dipped into the spicy peanut sauce, they are one of the tastiest snacks around. It’s easy for everyone to enjoy, as it’s certainly packed with flavour and not too spicy; a great family favourite. But what are the origins of satay? Satay has been influenced by Indonesian, Malaysian and Thai cuisine, but its origin has been widely agreed to be the Indonesian island of Java, though it soon spread to neighbouring countries of South East Asia. As you travel across the region, you will find versions of Satay in the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand; each having their own distinct version. Though originating in Indonesia, it is Thai cuisine which has been the main driver of the satay’s popularity, as Thai cuisine is much more heavily promoted worldwide than Indonesian cuisine, with more Thai restaurants in each country.

Hence the Satay quickly became known as a popular Thai dish. In the USA, the satay is reportedly considered one of their most popular Thai dishes. Thais are extremely confident of their cuisine and often borrow dishes from other cultures, giving them some “Thainess” along the way; the Satay is no different. In true Thai style, the dish was borrowed and reinvented; ensuring it is distinctly Thai. In Thailand, the pork or chicken is marinated in a mixture of turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, coriander root, garlic and fish sauce, which adds flavour but also ensures the meat is tender. The Thai peanut sauce is made from a large number of ingredients, however the use of a Red or Pha-naeng curry paste makes it easier to amalgamate all the Thai flavours with the additional ingredients like roasted peanuts, coconut milk, palm sugar and fish sauce, to name just a few. In contrast, the traditional Indonesian peanut sauce is made much more simply; with peanuts, Kecap Manis (sweet Soy Sauce), chillies, shallots and lime; this is

pounded together into a thick sauce, rather than cooked. In Indonesia, satay is usually served with a vinegar and vegetable pickle or ajaad, which acts as a palate cleanser.

There is normally a serving of lightly toasted bread as well. Bread in Thailand sometimes can have a sweetness to it, but when dipped into the peanut sauce, then followed with the vegetable pickle, it adds an additional textural element to the dish. Whilst chicken and pork are the most popular protein used in Thailand for satays, you may find beef or even vegetable and tofu versions being grilled. The street vendors would normally cook the satays in advance, putting them aside to reheat quickly over coals as they are ordered. The charcoal burners do add a wonderful smoky, barbeque taste to the satay, however you may also see vendors using small gas burners. It is also quite easy to see how Thailand has adapted the satay to a pork skewer called Muu Bping. These are normally a little flatter and the pork is generally has more fat, which makes it even more delicious. Rather than dipped into a spicy sauce, these are usually served with sticky rice, Khao Niaw, they make a wonderful snack at any time of the night or day.
