The Tourism Authority of Thailand Prachuap office is busy planning significant marketing plans aimed at focusing tourism next year on new destinations and exciting events. Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Prachuap Khiri Khan, Director Soraya Homchuen revealed to a Hua Hin Today reporter that in the last 9 months of 2019, from January – September, a total of 4,963,466 tourists (both Thai and foreign tourists) visited the Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and has earned 28,839.45 million Baht in tourism income. Ranking as number 9 in the country’s tourism, 80% were locals and the remaining are foreign tourists.

Ms. Soraya is accelerating marketing plans for tourism promotion and expecting the numbers of visitors to rise significantly in 2020. In this coming year, the TAT Prachuap will encourage the participation of more private sectors in organising sports activities for the locals and tourists such as marathons, cycling, golf, football, tennis and various water sports in order to boost tourism in the Prachuap province. New brochures will be handed out offering 8 exciting destinations for traveling, eating and lodging in Prachuap province.

Weekday events and activities will be launched so as to encourage tourists to stay longer than usual. During the weekend, local tourists normally flock to the beaches of Cha-am, Hua Hin and Pranburi. The local tourism market has also planned to launch the “Prachuap Remarkable Weekdays – if you don’t try it, you won’t know it…” program. Private sectors will be urged to organise multiple sporting events continuing from the events held in 2019. Social Farm Trips will be organised to promote tourist attractions of secondary town cities such as Kui Buri, Thap Sakae,

Bang Saphan and Bang Saphan Noi districts. However, it is expected that by the middle of 2020, if the domestic and global economy improves and the trading war subsided, tourism would at least progress a bit if not more. Including the factor of the Thai Baht having the tendency to dip, this will consequently increase the European tourism market in the near future. Therefore, the TAT Prachuap is trying to accelerate the tourism marketing plan by early next year and to find ways to attract more tourist groups in visiting Prachuap province. Read more on Page 4

Acupuncture Cupping Therapy Chinese Herbal Medicine Moxibustion Gua-Sha

Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on a concept of balanced qi (pronounced "chee"), or vital energy, that is believed to flow throughout the body. Qi is proposed to regulate a person's spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Disease is proposed to result from the flow of qi being disrupted and yin and yang becoming imbalanced. Among the components of TCM are herbal and nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, acupuncture, and remedial massage.

As we’ve all known, properties and housing development had been increasing steadily for the past 12 years here in Hua Hin, Cha-am and Pranburi. In this issue, we’ve dedicated an exclusive section for the first ‘Top 3’ property developers. Although there are so many reputable developers in and around Hua Hin, we have already planned to add more of them (if not all) on our future subscriptions and website. Now, back to our ‘end of the year’ summary… For some of us, this year’s festive season will be quite different from the rest. Obviously, hotels and restaurants in Hua Hin and nearby establishments have put in tremendous effort in order to serve their clients the ‘best of their best’. Not just because it’s Christmas or another old-fashioned New Year, but it’s all about us altogether leaping into a new decade. You could see people smiling in every corner of the town, children are excited with their gifts and the arrival of Father Santa on Christmas Eve, and families are still hoping that their wishes would come true in this coming New Year. So, everything is set... the holiday mood is finally here! Perhaps you’ve already had your plans on where to celebrate this biggest event of the decade. Go ahead… have a great and memorable time with your family and loved ones. Dance, feast, scream and enjoy! Once again, we at the Hua Hin Today, would like to thank all our readers and friends (locally and around the globe) for your kind support all these times. We’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year !

4 Hua Hin ‘Pink Zumbathon’ Charity Event

Ms. Pailin Khongphan, Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin had presided over the opening of the Hua Hin Pink Zumbathon Charity Event for the Chalerm Phrakiat Breast Cancer Foundation at the Hua Don Beach, Khao Takiab. Ms. Budsaba Choksuchat, Deputy Mayor of Hua Hin, Mr. Chirawat Pramani, Hua Hin Municipality Clerk, Ms. Soraya Homchuen, Director of TAT Prachuap Khiri Khan Office, Hua Hin Woman’s Club members and the Zumba Thailand Teacher’s Network also attended the event. All guests both local and foreigners shown wearing in pink expressing the theme “Hua Hin in Pink” performed a Zumba dance at the Hua Don Beach in Khao Takiab. This was the first of its kind to be held in Hua Hin district. Instructor Yodchay Yamakrup (Kru Num), the first Zumba instructor in Thailand collaborated with the Zumba Fitness Teacher’s Network have created an energetic and overwhelming ambiance with their dance exercises. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the Chalerm Phrakiat Breast Cancer Foundation as well as promoting health tourism. Each year, there has been an

increase of 2 million women suffering from breast cancer worldwide. According to the statistics of the National Cancer Institute for Thailand, breast cancer is the number 1 disease found in Thai women nationwide. The risk for Thai women in contracting the disease is 1 out of 10, and a record of 10 deaths per day was caused by breast cancer. It is still unclear what is the main cause of the disease, even though there has been an increase in breast cancer detected in Thai women. The risks are often found in women aged 40 years old above. Many Thai women are now conscious of their health and are active in sports including aerobics and Zumba dances. The trend towards health and sports tourism is becoming more and more popular amongst the locals and tourists, and Zumba dance is considered a very trendy exercise in Thailand. As quoted by the late King Rama IX, “A person who receives something, should also give back in return by any means… Giving by trying to create unity for the society and nation. The nation must be able to trust one another and help each other in many ways with a truly generous heart.”

Thai Cultural Dancing for the late King Rama IX

More than 200 women in ‘Siwalai’ costumes performed a special Thai dance in respect of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in commemorating his birthday as well as Thailand’s Father’s Day on December 5. Col. Nawet Wanitchakul, Deputy Director of Internal Security of Prachuap Khiri Khan presided over the Ceremony, the great monarchy of Siam at the Rajabhakti Park in Nong Kae, Hua Hin. Mr. Thanont Pornrapipat, Hua Hin sheriff, Mr. Nopporn Wuttikul, Hua Hin Mayor and head of both public and private sectors also joined the ceremony. Members of the Hua Hin Dancing Art Association Faculty of Thai Music, and students from Burapha University together with 150

Girl Students Possessed During Religious Rituals

Mr. Surin Bunsap, Director of Hua Hin Witthayakhom School together with the faculty, parents and students gathered to make merit and performed Buddhist rituals by the monks from Khao Yai Temple for their school’s prosperity. Whilst the monks were praying and performing the rituals, a group of girl students who were sitting at the front row suddenly started to scream and went into seizures and convulsion, as if they were being possessed by some bad spirits. Everyone at the scene panic and were shocked causing teachers and the parents of the students to rush in and help them lie down (Continued from Page 1) TAT Prachuab is also preparing to bring in new entrepreneurs to Prachuap Khiri Khan province and participate in potential sales promotion such as the Thai Teaw Thai Fair, Thai International Travel Fair and Weekday Special Thailand. Ms. Soraya also announced that TAT will organise the “Colorful Festival of Prachuap Khiri Khan 2020”, on January 17 – 19 which will be held at the Queen’s Sirikit Park, (19 Rai) along the coastline of Hua Hin. The festive area will be divided into zones so it will be convenient for visitors to walk, shop and eat. There will be zones for sports, travel, café, hanging out, eating and also a fun zone for children. TAT would like to invite all Hua Hin residents and residents nearby to visit and join this event. HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

musicians from various schools performed in front of the statues of seven Kings of Siam during the ceremony. This event was held to commemorate HM Maha Bhumibol Adulyadej and honouring the loyalty and prestige of the great Kings of Siam All the performers were dressed in Thai traditional costumes consisting four main colours. Yellow represents the royal color of King Rama IX and King Rama X (King Vajiraklao), red representing the nation’s color, white symbolises religion and, blue representing Thai monarchy. The performance was beautifully coordinated when the procession slowly transformed into a stunning Thai national flag. Visitors and tourists attending the ceremony were inspired by the performance.

on the floor and do a first aid massage to calm them down. The incident lasted for about 30 minutes, and then everything went back to normal. One of the parents of the girls said that their daughter had been having this kind of seizures about 3-4 times lately. They had taken their daughter to see a doctor, but found out that nothing was wrong with her. The parents have also taken their daughter to several temples in order to make merit (according to beliefs) but haven’t found any cure yet. The parents were desperate and don’t know what exactly to do next.

6 She Sells Seashells by the Seashore The bounty of the ocean comes to Thailand in many guises, some edible, some recreational and some decorative. Our coastline provides all of these and more. One of the least heralded of these benefits is clearly visible at many tourist coastal locations, but particularly by the seashore of Cha-Am. Seashells have been used as jewelry or in other forms of decoration or adornment since prehistoric times. Making and selling shell decorations of all shapes and sizes follows this tradition as a significant cottage industry for Cha-Am. The city is probably the biggest supplier to many other coastal venues, including Phuket, Krabi, Bang Saen and Pattaya. Around Cha-Am this industry can be found at all levels; from shell suppliers, family handcraft operations to retail outlets and wholesale businesses. On the beach front retail operators may be either casual vendors strolling along the sands, mobile shops (from motorcycle sidecars to loaded pickups) or at more permanent shops. Vendors seem to miraculously appear whenever a crowd is drawn to the beach, especially on weekends. Items range from children’s’ novelties for a bedside table selling for 2 or 10 THB, through to large decorated mirrors which could be up to 1,000 THB. The most popular version is a doorway ‘curtain’ or archway. The shells may be from the Thailand coastline, particularly around Phuket Island, but also from Vietnam or China. They may come in bulky sacks, cleaned and ready

or in smaller quantities requiring sorting and cleaning. One important feature is that they are both white and naturally coloured, never dyed. Colours range of pastel shades of delicate pink or purple through to red, brown and orange. Decorations may be over 10 years old but show no signs of fading or otherwise deteriorating. Also a variety of shapes from the almost flat, ‘fanned’ species through to ‘snail’ shapes and ‘prickly’ extended cones. Not living creatures, but the remnants of what once was. They were destined to become beach sand and there is no shortage of that! No environmental issues here, just another way to appreciate ocean’s diversity. The small family business we visited makes around 50 of the ‘doorway style’ decorations each week. After sorting, cleaning and drilling a small hole in each shell, they ‘outsource’ the labour intensive process of threading each shell individually onto strands of thin cord or fishing line. The local ladies involved in this task give attention to detail and consistency, although ‘naturally’, each item is unique. This handcraft can be likened to knitting, including the patterns formation and colour changes. This is a relaxing, stress free and modesty paid hobby for some.

About 80% of the shell decorations are bought by Thai people, typically on holidays, with most of the remainder destined to decorate the homes of ex-pats. If you are thinking of taking a souvenir back to your home country, customs regulations will need to be considered. This is really a good news story for the local economy. Why Cha-Am has taken the lead in Thailand is something we can’t explain. Just another example of a local initiative which has really added colour to our region.

Khao Yai Temple New Pet Crematorium

Wat Khao Yai Arun-Bunyarat (Khao Yai Temple) has built a new pet’s crematorium (especially for dogs and cats). Monks will be performing a small praying ceremony before cremating the deceased pet animals – all free of charge. This is convenient and practical for pet owners worrying how and where to bury their adored animals when they die. Last month, a number of pet owners brought in their deceased pet animals to Khao Yai Temple for cremation. The monks performed religious rituals, requiem and pour holy water so as to send the spirits of their pets to the next life peacefully (according to their beliefs). The crematorium was built especially for dogs and cats – similar to the normal crematoriums except that it’s smaller. The first and only pet crematorium in Hua Hin, pet owners from nearby can bring in their deceased pets for rituals and cremation. Bones and ashes will be collected after the HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

cremation, and handed to the owner for burial at home or scattered in the river or sea, depending on the owner’s wish. Pet owners can donate cash to the temple to cover the expenses of charcoal, water, electricity, and fuel being used during the cremation. Phra Phichit Chanthasaro, assistant abbot of the temple said that a few years ago, people asked whether the temple could help them with the rituals and ceremony to cremate their deceased pet dogs and cats. The temple built a small crematorium made of simple materials using firewood for cremation, but it did not last that long. One day, Dr. Chinnawet Sarasas, a prominent businessman (also a pet lover) who visits the temple regularly saw the condition of the old pet crematorium. He offered to build a new one for the temple with proper metal sheets for roofing, marble floorings, steel doors and an exhaust system for the smoke.

Dr. Chinnawet has donated 400,000 Baht for the construction of the new pet crematorium which was completed in September.

Unfortunately, after the new crematorium was built, Dr. Chinnawet’s dog passed away unexpectedly. Needless to say, his pet dog was the first to be cremated at Khao Yai Temple. Phra Phichit goes on to say that the crematory was named: “Best Friend’s Pavilion” on behalf of Dr. Chinnawet, who wants it to be the last resting place for pet animals. Phra Somchai Ajaro, the temple’s caretaker, says it usually takes 1-2 hours for the cremation depending on the size of the deceased pet animal. Since the completion of the crematorium, more than a hundred pet dogs were cremated. Mr. Whou Puoekpo, a 73-year-old villager said building a crematory for pets at Khao Yai Temple is a good and practical idea because at present there are too many pets in Hua Hin and nearby areas including stray dogs. Animals and pets suffering from terminal diseases or being run over by vehicles accidentally can now have their proper resting place when they die.

7 Facebook Hacked;

Victims Scammed for Money

Last week a 28-year-old staff of the Railway Double Track Construction Project Ms. Chonthicha Innoi, (who happens to be the daughter of Deputy Director of Prachuap Khiri Khan police station) reported that she has been scammed through Facebook by a certain ‘relative’. Ms. Chonticha told the inquiry officer, Pol. Lt. Prasong Chaturat of Hua Hin police station that after receiving several messages from the relative in borrowing money through Facebook. The relative frequently borrowed her money and each time, the money was returned on a specific date. In a recent transaction, Ms. Chonticha was asked by the ‘relative’ to transfer 3,000 Baht through the Siam Commercial Bank E-Commerce app via her smartphone. The money went into the account of a recipient named Mr. Amrit Thongsod. When the money was not returned on its due date, she then tried to contact the recipient but found out that his Facebook account has been hacked and that this account name was a scam. Shortly, Ms. Chonthicha discovered that the account where she wired the money to has multiple deposit accounts that were presumably used in swindling victims. Many of these victims were from Hua Hin district. It was believed that more than a million Baht

was tricked by lending money to this hacker disguised as a ‘relative’ of the victims. The investigative police said that there would be a subpoena to notify the manager of Siam Commercial Bank to investigate the matter and take legal action as soon as possible. Police later found out that the owner of the bank account, Amrit Thongsod is residing in Kanchanaburi Province. Anonymously, someone must have hacked into his account and used it for scam operations. Pol. Col. Pitee Innoi, Deputy Director of the Prachuap Khiri Khan police station, told that the case of his daughter is an example of a genuine scammer (disguised as a relative) trying to borrow money through different social media platforms i.e. Facebook, Messenger or LINE. He advised that before lending money to a close relative who have communicated with you through online messages, it is wise to call and verify with your relative through their own mobile phone before trusting them in lending off your money. The case has now been filed to the Provincial Investigation Division 7 to follow up the investigation and arrest the criminal(s), The police suspected that it is a part of a huge network victimising net citizens throughout the country.

YOUR COUNTRY’S NATIONAL DAY December 16th Bangladesh

We wish he could have been born on the 5th, too. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still listen to his famed 5th Symphony to celebrate his birthday. But if we’re playing the numbers game, he did happen to compose exactly 16 string quartets. Coincidence? (Yes.) December 18th: Bake Cookies Day

Also called “No-L” day (get it, noel?), the precise intention of this holiday is a little murky, but the “no L” component comes from people who don’t want to send out Christmas cards but want to say hello to their friends and family, so they send out cards listing the letters of the alphabet with a gap where the letter “L” would be. In other words, Christmas Shmishmas. December 26th: Boxing Day

Victory day is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on December 16 to commemorate the victory of the allied forces over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The Commanding o f f i ce r o f t h e Pa k i st a n i Fo rce s G e n e ra l AA K Niazi surrendered with his forces to the Allied forces of India and Bangladesh, which marked the end of the 9 month-long Bangladesh Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh genocide and official secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

December 17th Bhutan

Bake Cookies Day comes at an opportune time. It arrives amidst the major December holidays, It serves as a reminder to brake holiday cookies. People, young and old celebrate this day by baking their favorite cookies. Make a party of it, and bake cookies with your family, friends, kids and grandkids. Bake Cookies Day is for everyone! December 21st: Crossword Puzzle Day

Boxing Day occurs the day after Christmas each year, and in modern times it is considered an extension of Christmas celebrations as well as a day for sales and major sporting events. Some people think that because Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, it must be the day all the boxes that presents came in are thrown away. Actually, the origins of this holiday go back many centuries to where, traditionally, on the day after Christmas, churches would open their alms’ boxes and distribute the contents to the poor of their parish. December 27th: Visit the Zoo Day

December 17th is officially the national day of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Bhutan is located in the Eastern Himalayas; it is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China in the north, the Sikkim state of India and the Chumbi Valley of Tibet in the west, the Arunachal Pradesh state of India in the east, and the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal in the south. Bhutan is geopolitically in South Asia and is the region’s second least populous nation after the Maldives. Thimphu is its capital and largest city, while Phuntsholing is its financial center.

December 18th Qatar

Crossword Puzzle Day is very puzzling to most of the people, why this special day would be so close to Christmas. Well, it just so happen that crossword puzzles were created and published on this day in 1913. It was published in the New York World newspaper. Arthur Wynne is created with creating the modern crossword puzzle became so popular. Hope you find some time in this busy holiday season, to compete a crossword puzzle today. December 24th: The End of the War of 1812 (in 1814)

December 18th is officially the national day of the State of Qatar, a country located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qutar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Whether the sovereign state should be regarded as a constitutional monarchy or an absolute monarchy is disputed.

December 20th Macau

Visit the Zoo Day takes place during the holidays, between Christmas and New Year Day, at a time when children often have off from school. Family members who live out of town are often visiting as well. Given these circumstances, Visit the Zoo Day provides a great way for families to bond during the holidays. Visit the Zoo Day, also known as National Visit the Zoo Day, is observed next on Friday, December 27th, 2019. December 31st: Make Up Your Mind Day

Just in time for Christmas, the Americans and the British got their stuff together to sign the Treaty of Ghent, thus ending the War of 1812. Contrary to what this conflict might lead you to believe, the war lasted for past its inaugural year, and despite the peace treaty signature in 1814, the war didn’t even officially end until 1815. On this day, we could always celebrate freedom and democracy—but why not honor inaccurately named conflicts too? HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

As the biggest fund raising venture on the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin (RCRHH) calendar, the 10th Annual Rotary Charity Golf Tournament was held on 29th November at the Banyan Golf Club. A staggering 1,347,767 THB was raised through multiple generous sponsorships, individual donations, auctions and raffles as perhaps the region’s most successful annual charity golfing event. A total of 128 golfers of many different nationalities in 32 teams were treated to breakfast, lavish hospitality on-course and after the ninth hole a joyous prize giving dinner.

Banyan golf course was showing these golfers yet again why the management has recently won awards as the Best Golf Club Experience and the Ultimate Service/Hospitality in the Asia Pacific. If there had been an award for the Best Charity Golf Course Experience, the tournament participants would have certainly voted for Banyan as the winner! The RCRHH gave big thanks to the Banyan Golf Club management and staff and to their main sponsors; Orchid Palm Homes, Dunlop Adhesives, NT Assets, Sansara Black Mountain, MediCall, Axa Insurance, KVIK Kitchens and to

their own Rotarian Lizzy Ginsel for her generous donation. The RCRHH provides the highest level of credibility and community support to achieve this success with a proud record of substantial community benefits. The funds raised at this tournament will now boost the Club’s ability to continue with these charity projects. 14 The Hua Hin & Cha-Am Condo Market Balancing Supply and Demand

The surveys have been undertaken by Plus Property and Frank Knight Thailand to demonstrate that a balance has followed the opening of a large number of development between 2011 and 2012, which caused demand to fall behind the surging supply. Condominiums in Hua Hin and Cha-Am have bright prospects with sales near the beach reaching 81%, according to a Plus Property survey. The Frank Knight survey puts the sales rate at a slightly higher 83% with just over 22,000 condominiums sold out of a supply almost 27,000 units. The lowest sales rate was in 2011, at 45 per cent due to the new supply entering the market that year, which reached 6,000 units. The sales rate increased to 71 per cent in 2015 and 78 per cent in 2017.

It was the highest in mid-2019, at 83 per cent. “Some 3,700 units or 70% [of the condos for sale during the survey] are from projects clustered near the beach. Thes zone has the highest sales ratio of 81%, with an average sales price of 88,000 baht per square metre, almost 30% lower than the average for the beachfront zone of 120,000 baht per sq m,” the Plus Property survey states. There were about 5,200 condo units on offer in Hua Hin during the survey conducted during the six months through June, said Suwannee Mahanarongchai, deputy managing director, business strategies and asset management at Plus Property. More than 50% of the supply is located in Cha-Am, where property projects generally had larger spaces than their counterparts in

Hua Hin. Nonetheless, the sales ratio in Hua Hin outperformed that of Cha-Am, as Hua Hin presented a wider array of amenities that included hospitals and two large shopping malls. There were a total supply of 11,700 condominium units and a sales ratio of 76% for the Hua Hin, Cha-Am area. The average sales price for all areas within the locality stood at 90,000 baht per square metre. Three zones have been identified where condominiums were being developed: the beachfront zone, the near beach zone and the hillside zone. The near beach zone was the most popular because it was less expensive than the beachfront zone and boasted relative proximity to the sea compared to the hillside zone. Since 2017, a total of four projects have been launched within the beach zone, three were situated inside Hua Hin’s city area and were adjacent to Phetkasem Road. This location meant that commutes could be made easily and residents could conveniently access the beach, malls and hospitals, while prices were also more affordable than the beachfront zone. One positive factor contributing to sustained interest for condominiums is that the locality remains one of the most popular holiday sites for visitors from Bangkok. Over the past five years, the number of Thai and foreign visitors to Hua Hin has risen 6% per year. The main buyers in Hua Hin are still Thai people looking for a holiday home for their weekend breaks, and who may rent the units out when they are not there. Foreign customers who buy condominiums in Hua Hin only account for 10 per cent of all buyers; this buyer group consists of foreigners from Scandinavian countries, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. In terms of the price of condominiums in Hua Hin, the average selling price of a condo with sea views is around 132,000 baht per

Majestic Creek Golf Club & Resort is one of the most unique golf courses in Thailand since there is a 27 -hole gem, lying in the beautiful undulating countryside close to the mountains separating Myanmar from Thailand and only 25 minutes outside the Royal town of Hua Hin.

square metre. This increased 2 per cent from the end of 2018. The price of a sea view condo falls within the range of 107,000 to 176,000 baht per square metre. Lower-priced units are usually those that have only partial sea views or are not directly facing the sea. The average selling price in Hua Hin tends to be higher than other areas. For units that do not have sea views, the prices range from 60,000 baht to 90,000 baht per square metre. In the first half of 2019, the average selling price of units that do not have sea views was around 74,000 baht per square metre, reflecting an increase of 2 per cent from the end of 2018.

Balancing An Optimistic Outlook

The property companies are eager to project increasing tourist arrivals commenting on high speed rail development and airport expansion. “Hua Hin has future growth prospects because of the government’s plan to develop a high-speed rail link for the South. The high-speed rail line passing through Hua Hin is the first phase of the plan,” said Ms Suwannee of Plus Property. However this comment was made before the news that the high speed train project has been shelved; at least temporarily. More airline international direct flights to Hua Hin are also described as contributing to additional future foreign tourist arrivals. Additionally stimulus measures that reduced the ownership transfer fee and mortgage registration fee has included home loans for properties priced no more than 3 million baht. As a result, condominiums priced at or below the 3 million baht mark now make up 75% of all the condominium units on offer in Hua Hin. Some 3,900 units stand to gain from the measure. The less optimistic point to the lower purchasing power for foreigners due to the high value of the baht; a fact that continues to adversely affect inbound tourism numbers and may influence future condominium demands.

There will be a very warm welcome for you here at the Majestic Creek Golf Club and Resort and we look forward to seeing you soon.

16 What Came First; the Sturgeon or the Caviar? The answer to this ‘fishy’ question is perhaps easier to answer than the age-old ‘chicken or the egg’ riddle that continues to befuddle thinkers worldwide.

Hua Hin Sturgeon Farm Manager Alexandr Tyutin is eagerly awaiting the farm’s first production of caviar early next year, some three years after the importation of the fingerlings, or baby fish. In this case the sturgeons definitely came to Hua Hin before the caviar! Our visit to the farm was arranged by the Sheraton Resort and Spa’s Executive Chef Jakub Mares after we tasted the delicacies of sturgeon on the menu during a Chef’s Table event at the Luna Lanai Restaurant in October. Before that event Chef Jakub had been on a quest to source the best local produce and succeeded in acquiring possibly the most exotic but local delicacy around. Comparable with crocodiles, the ancient sturgeon fish keep growing all their life with no deterioration in the quality of the meat. In fact the quality of the caviar improves with the age of the fish. The fish have been known to grow to well over nine metres in length. This is an ancient species with a fossil record going back over 200 million years. Sturgeons are now vulnerable to overfishing and interference offered worldwide protection. Fish farms in many countries are now the only legal source of sturgeon meat and caviar. The Hua Hin Sturgeon Farm’s founder and Managing Director, Dr Alexey Tyutin began setting up the farm back in 2014 with around 5,000 fingerlings imported from China in 2016. At that time the baby fish were only about half the size of a person’s little finger, weighing around 1.5 grams. Now there are exactly 2,769 fish weighing an average 11 kilograms kept in ten purpose made netted tanks in secure and very hygienic premises ten minutes away from downtown Hua Hin.

to determine the gender of the fish, a task that could not be achieved until the fish were around two years old with each fish given an ultrasound test. The males and females are now separated with the males destined for the dinner table and signs of the first spawning of the females under constant watch.

Asked why he decided to go into the caviar business in Thailand, Alexey says, “It was quite a sudden decision actually. It is difficult to find a new business in Thailand. Everything is here already and most people focus on construction and development of hotels, condominiums, holiday homes and so on.

When spawning is detected a ‘standby’ Russian sturgeon expert will begin harvesting the roe; a process which involves the individual massaging of the fish to expel the roe before the fish is returned to the tank unharmed. Each fish produces eggs annually but controlling the water conditions of different tanks means that different fish will spawn at different times of the year so that production can be staged. Farm Manager Alexandr is a trained engineer whose technical skills ensure the systems are maintained to control the water quality, particularly temperature, salinity and oxygen levels are maintained with hygiene, waste and feed monitoring being paramount. He joined his father’s enterprise around three years ago and lives nearby to the property as he may be alerted at any time if any issues arise with the monitoring systems. The majority of the farm’s future produce is destined for the Bangkok market although it seems certain many of Hua Hin’s resort chefs, including Jakub from the Sheraton, will also be keeping their eyes on this most unusual local produce for their special event. Thanks to Alexandr for his guided tour and to Chef Jakub for the invitation to check out the Hua Hin Sturgeon Farm; an amazing enterprise. I thought there were good opportunities in the luxury market in Thailand and since I knew caviar, I decided to go into this business and develop it here.” He anticipated that it would take around 9 year before a return on this significant investment may be realised. In the long chain of events that will finally see regular caviar production from early 2020, an initial requirement was

HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

Alexandr say he prefers his caviar as just a simple spread on fresh bread. When naively asked if he really likes caviar, his eyes widened at such a crazy question; then a very emphatic response - “FOR SURE”! Footnote: There have been some incidents in the wild of sturgeons leaping into boats. In 2015, a 5-year-old girl was reported to have been fatally injured after a large sturgeon leapt from a river in southern USA and striking her.

18 Endangered Hornbills; One of the Casualties of Superstitious Beliefs A craze for helmeted hornbill heads as amulets and decorations is posing a serious to the birds’ small population in Thailand’s forests, say conservation activists.

The campaigners spoke at a recent event where they announced a new campaign to raise awareness over the dwindling number of rare animals in the wild. They were joined by celebrities and government officials who urged Thais to eliminate the use of animal parts, such as hornbill heads, tiger teeth, and ivory. While ivory and tiger teeth have long been targeted by poachers, a recent fad for helmeted hornbill in the black market is particularly worrying because there are only about 200 hornbills left in Thailand, according to an activist from environment group Traffic. Yet, despite the birds’ potential extinction, their plight is not well known among the public, group coordinator Maethinee Passaraudomsuk said. Hornbills lost their head so that the orange-colored parts of their bills, or casques, could be carved into base reliefs of Buddha or even King Rama IX, the activist said. Speaking at the same panel, popular Buddhist monk and preacher Phra Medhivajirodom agreed with Maethinee that there’s a need to raise

HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

the public’s attention not just to elephants and tigers, but hornbills as well. “Don’t you know that killing [hornbills] will affect us, because one hornbill helps plant 200,000 trees per year?” the monk said. Hornbills play a significant role in the local ecosystem. Not only do they help spread seeds, but as a predator, the hornbill also helps control the population of small animals. The monk also said killing wildlife animals to make tributes to Lord Buddha will not bring any blessing to their lives. “It’s superstitious,” Phra Medhivajirodom said. “I should like to say it’s foolish, but dare not to, as I don’t want to offend anyone.” Another panelist was actor and volunteer Bin Banloerit, who was also chosen by the groups to be the public face of their campaigns. He admitted to having bought and possessed amulets made from wildlife animals in the past – his collection even included a tooth of a dugong – out of belief that they would bring good luck. But he changed his mind after working as a rescue volunteer. One day, Bin recalled, he realised that his belief was groundless because many dead bodies he retrieved from accident sites or crime scenes were wearing the same amulets he had, yet they met horrible deaths nonetheless “In the past I used to really misunderstand about tiger teeth and ivory,” Bin said at the panel. “I heard these stories about its potency, that a knife or a bullet cannot penetrate the owner. That was twenty years ago.” The actor-turned-volunteer added that he once lost a football gamble, and his pair of ivory tusks was taken away by the loan shark, which also proved to him that the tusks didn’t bring him any luck after all.

A study published in 2018 by USAID Wildlife Asia said about 500,000 Thais are believed to own ivory products, and 250,000 own artifacts made from tiger parts. Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation official Somkiat Soontornpitakkool said his agency has tried to visit some Buddhist temples that organised ceremonies to impart spiritual power into amulets made from ivory or tiger teeth, but his officials couldn’t do much. The matter was mostly left to religious authorities because the situation is “sensitive,” Somkiat said. He added that a revised edition of the Wildlife Protection Act is coming into effect in late November. Under the revision, violators who trade illegal wildlife items face up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to one million baht. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is joining hands with several international organisations to launch a campaign to end wildlife trafficking. The campaign, called “A Good Life is Free of Killing”, is a collaboration between the Thai government, WildAid, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The director of the DNP’s Wild Flora and Fauna Protection Division, Somkiat Soontornpitakkool, said illegal wildlife trafficking has led to sharp declines in the numbers of wild tigers and elephants to the extent that both animals are facing the real risk of extinction. “Thailand is considered as a transit country for wildlife traffickers, especially those coming from border areas near Malaysia and Laos,” he said. “Although Thailand has been removed from [Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species] Cites’s ivory trade blacklist, the illegal trade in tiger parts persists,” he said.

“All Asean members are working together on four main areas -- cracking down on wildlife smuggling, reducing consumer demand for smuggled flora and fauna, improving law enforcement, and clamping down on the illegal wildlife trade on the internet,” he said. According to Mr Somkiat, Thailand’s new Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act, which took effect in November, will carry stiffer penalties of up to 10 years in prison and/or a maximum fine of million baht for wildlife trafficking.

19 Ministry of Health: Family Problems Often Due to Alcohol Abuse About 10 percent of Thais say they have experienced marital and family problems because of someone else’s drinking habit, according to a new study. The survey, which involved face-toface interviews with 1,695 Thais over twelve months, also found that over a third of respondents feel threatened when they encounter someone drinking in public. The survey comes at a time when proponents of stricter alcohol regulations are saying it’s time the authorities focus on the adverse impacts of drinking, similar to a recent crackdown on second-hand smoking. “When someone faces a drinking problem, people around them are affected as well,” survey organiser Orathai Waleewong from the Ministry of Public Health said at a news conference.

The survey was supported by four organisations, including the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Centre for Alcohol Studies. Although less than 2.4 percent of respondents say they have been assaulted by family members or friends under the influence of alcohol – and even less, 0.8 percent, say they have been sexually assaulted – Orathai said alcohol can precipitate violence. She also identified other impacts on work, the emotional well-being, and the finances of drinkers. “There are no national measures to address the issue, such as rehabilitation services,” Orathai said. Even so, there exist a variety of laws aimed at curbing advertising and consumption of alcohol, which some business operators have labeled as excessive. The

most notorious among them is a ban on any action that “encourages” others to drink, with a maximum penalty of 500,000 baht. Juvenile welfare official Sahakarn Petchnarin said restrictions are also already in place on selling alcohol in the vicinity of 34,900 schools and universities. When asked whether the strategy is sound given other countries like the United Kingdom enforce no such restrictions (some top universities such as Oxford and Cambridge even subsidize the price of alcoholic drinks on campus), Sahakarn said Thai youths lack the same level of maturity as their Western counterparts. “The context is different. The strength of mind is not there,” Sahakarn said.

Thai Alcoholic Beverage Business Association chairman Thanakorn Kuptajit urged campaigners not to treat them as problems but engage with them to solve problems. “Such problems can be solved through cooperations. Don’t look at us as problems. We are the solutions,” Thanakorn said in an interview, adding that part of the problems is in not enforcing the law forbidding minor of those under 20 to buy and drink alcohol. Thanakorn also warns that while he generally supports the zoning of places where one can buy alcohol, tourism revenue should also be taken into consideration. “We need to consider the impact on the economy,” he said.

Very Effective Mosquito Repellents From Common Plants

Laksana Lueprasert, a pharmacist at the Ministry of Health’s Medical Sciences Department, says that an application of home-made repellents should be effective for about two hours against mosquitoes, which are active during daylight hours (and can transmit haemorrhagic dengue fever) and for seven hours against nocturnal mosquitoes, which carry encephalitis, a potentially fatal condition that causes acute inflammation of the brain. However, Laksana urged people to take other preventive measures to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, including making sure there are no puddles or receptacles holding standing water in the vicinity of one’s home which can serve as breeding grounds for the insect. Basil and peppermint are cousin plants, which is why they are both effective at fighting mosquitoes. A 2000 study published in Bioresource Technology tested the effectiveness of peppermint oil on mosquitoes and found that peppermint oil applied to the skin kept away 100 percent of one species of mosquito, 92 percent of another, and 84 percent of a third. The oil added to water also killed mosquito larva. So, if you have nothing else lying around, rub some peppermint oil on the skin or even rub a peppermint or basil leaf on the skin. Lavender can also repel mosquitoes. Simply rub lavender essential oil on the skin and you’re good to go. Lavender is also soothing after bug bites, so apply it to the skin if you or a family member gets bit by any insect.

Mention holy basil (kraprao) and turmeric (kamin) in the same breath and many people will assume you’re about to give the recipe for some appetising Thai dish. But the strong-smelling essential oils in these two kitchen-garden plants also make them perfect as ingredients in a natural mosquito repellent. The good thing about using essence of (kraprao leaves or turmeric root to ward off this pest is that both plants are easy to find and relatively safe to use compared to commercial chemical repellents, said Supaporn Pitiporn,

a pharmacist at Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, noting that another advantage was that the method for extracting the essence was very simple. Other commonly found plants with anti-mosquito properties are hanuman prasan kai, a decorative shrub in the Araliaceae family, and myrtle grass - called waan nam in Thai. These last four plants contain substances equivalent to Deet (Diethyl-meta-toluamide), a pesticide developed by the US army following its experience of jungle warfare during World War II and later certified by the World Health Organisation which is the most common ingredient in commercial mosquito repellent products.

The sleek and compact Scomadi Turismo Technica 125i rolls easy down Hua Hin’s winding countryside roads, bucolic vistas unfolding as far as the eye can see. From beach-hopping around Hua Hin to venturing further afield, guests will find carefully researched day trip itineraries, tried and tested by the concierge team. Culture vultures can delve deep into Thai history with an excursion to Klai Kangwon Palace—a former royal residence adjacent to some of the country’s best national parks. Equally impressive is the beachside Mrigadayavan Palace constructed entirely of teak wood amidst picnic-ready gardens—the perfect pit stop en route to the less travelled parts of the country.

Near the border with Myanmar, a scenic 1.5-hour ride from Hua Hin lies the 1,000-yearold forest that makes up Kaeng Krachan National Park. Within its borders, travellers get to explore the spectacular Pala-U waterfall cascading down 16 levels, cool down in its deep pools, observe abundant wildlife and rare birds and spend the day surrounded by pristine nature. In and around Hua Hin, guests can immerse themselves in local way of life with visits to Plearn Wan, a themed shopping complex; Cicada, an open-air art and craft market; or Seen Space, a beachfront shopping mall and eatery. To enjoy ultimate adventures on the modern classic Scomadi scooters, guests staying at Avani+ Hua Hin are encouraged to make scooter rental inquiries at the time of booking or at check-in.

21 Pirom: “The True Tastes of Thailand In Every Sense” Welcome to Pirom – a new chapter in the story of Thai cuisine!

At Pirom the story unfolds of Thai food and drink by presenting the country’s distinctive culinary as well as cultural heritage. Along with regional and specialty dishes that exemplify the diverse flavours and aromas of Thai food, Pirom also emphasize the sights, textures and even sounds associated with one of the world’s most popular cuisines. Pirom’s main menu highlights classic dishes and contemporary favourites from Thailand’s four major culinary regions: North, South, Central and Northeast. Pirom also offer special tasting and sharing menus that are great for families and groups, along with pairing menus combining Thai dishes with alcohol and non-alcohol beverages such as Thai wines and herbal drinks. All menus focus on premium ingredients including outstanding local produce such as Hua Hin’s renowned seafood delicacies.

There are many ways to tell a story – especially when that story entails the incredibly varied and complex aspects of Thai cuisine. That’s why in addition to dish descriptions and dietary information, our menus include enlightening side notes and other background pertaining to Thai food and drink. As to the country’s cultural heritage, just a glimpse around the restaurant you’ll see it conveyed through exquisite ceramic tableware, distinctive dining décor and many other touches that make every meal at Pirom a special occasion. Further enhancing your meal at Pirom most certainly will be a highly refined service assuring you of Thai hospitality at its finest. Pirom had likewise created a setting that encourages interaction with our experienced culinary professionals, all of whom are delighted to share with you their thorough knowledge of Thai food and drink. Pirom is also one of Hua Hin’s best places to experience a wide range of culinary programmes and activities such as guest chef appearances, festive holiday events and menus, year-round seasonal specialties, and much more. Chef Jasvir Sanghera, better known by her many fans as Chef Mama Duu has been cooking mostly all her life since childhood, and learning family recipes at home handed down by parents and grandparents, throughout a more than 30year professional career. As Chef de Cuisine at Pirom, the Thai native applies her extensive experience and no less considerable charm to creating dishes from all four of Thailand’s culinary regions. When the chef has time away from her kitchen duties and is in the main dining room, don’t be surprised if you happen to see someone ask for an autograph. Apart from happily sharing her knowledge with diners at Pirom, she’s also displayed her culinary talents on several Thai and international television programmes. Yet whether cooking here or for audiences around the world, always shining bright is Chef Mama Duu’s generous spirit as well as deep love and respect for her native cuisine. That same respect for tradition, moreover, inspires her to impart the knowledge and skills she’s mastered over the years

to the young now starting their culinary careers. ‘Cooking has been my life for over forty years,’ says Chef Mama Duu. ‘I’ve learned a lot and of course still greatly enjoy making people happy with my food. And so, it’s important for me to pass on my culinary knowledge and my life’s experience to the next generation.’ For diners at Pirom, that same expertise and genuine emotion define every Mama Duu dish, all made from the heart to nourish the soul.

A dish from Pirom’s menu; Mieng Khum

Historically a snack enjoyed primarily by the royal family though today often enjoyed by all Thais at social gatherings. Consummate skill is required to prepare the dish’s savourysweet shrimp sauce with peanut, dried shrimp, shallot, ginger, lime and chili and arrange within a beautiful lotus flower. Pla Sam Rod is a pan-fried sea bass filet with threeflavour sauce (spicy, sweet and sour). Passion fruit in sauce further makes for a distinctive blend of tastes. It’s a Cool Scene; ‘On the Rocks’ at Cape Nidhra wines, beers or spirits. Perhaps choosing a cocktail with the intriguing title of Cape Nidhra Strawberry Ale, Amaretto Moustache, Isaan Folly or Truth Serum will add to the conversation; or a classic Mojito, Pina Colada, Daiquiri or Long Island Iced Tea may better suit your mood.

“Man, it’s a hot one Like seven inches from the midday sun Well, I hear you whisper and the words melt everyone But you stay so cool” (Santana with Rob Thomas - ‘Smooth’) ‘On the rocks’ is a familiar way of describing a drink poured over ice before serving; that’s very cool! ‘On the Rocks’ is also the name of a very cool rooftop bar located in the heart of downtown Hua Hin at the Cape Nidhra Hotel; just a stroll away from the main road with uninterrupted views to the ocean. Our most recent visit was on one of those classic Hua Hin balmy evenings

at sundown. That meant cooling ocean breezes as well as cooling drinks during ‘happy hour’ with a selection of appetisers or hors d’oeuvres to complete the scene at our rooftop soirée. The experts say that an apéritif to stimulate the appetite (before dinner) is best dry rather than sweet, whereas a digestif (after a meal), may include a touch of sweetness and a higher alcohol percentage to help the body settle the meal and bring the evening to a close. Regardless of whether you choose to follow this suggestion or not, the drinks menu at ‘On the Rocks’ has an enticing selection of exotic options as well as house

We re-met long-standing GM Christian Roeschli who clearly enjoys mingling with regular patrons at this venue. Food and Beverage Manager Nopporn Samdeangdeth was our attentive host, overseeing the immaculate service of wait staff on hand to complement the relaxed atmosphere for those who have discovered this ‘oasis in the city’. Our next visit is likely to be on a Thursday evening. From December this will include live music from a laidback jazz trio, maybe with a cool version of Santana’s ‘Smooth’? But any evening ‘On the Rocks’ is recommended as the coolest rooftop bar in town!

‘On the Rocks Bar’ @ the Cape Nidhra Hotel Hua Hin Where: Central Phetchakasim Road across the road from the San Paolo Hospital then take a buggy ride past the pool suites towards the beach. Open: Everyday from 5 PM to 1 AM. Happy Hours every evening (buy one get one free) from 5 PM to 7 PM and 10 PM to 11 PM. Jazz Nights: Every Thursday from 6 to 7.30 PM. Hua Hin’s Top Property Agencies

For the past 12 years, Cha-Am, Pranburi, and especially Hua Hin, have been engaging in a property development race, as developments continue with vacant land, whether that be on the coast or in the cities continue be taken up.

Right now, there are so many reputable developers trying their utmost effort to design and build dream houses, pool villas, luxurious condos, and other land investments. However, customers as well as investors have many agencies and property developers to choose from in order to fulfill their needs in modern living. Finding an agent who is reputable, reliable and well informed is a vital of a successful property transaction but

how do you know who to trust? Word of mouth may work well for those with friends and family in the area. Moreover, newcomers are often uncertain and lack confidence in being able to secure the best agent for them. To address this uncertainty, we have now dedicated an exclusive section in this issue (and in subsequent issues to come) listing the ‘Top Three’ agencies and property developers. We’ve carefully selected these companies based upon our surveys,

ratings and personal recommendations. However, we are confident that there are more ‘Top Agencies’ in the field and we expect to be adding more and more agencies and property developers to our top agencies’ list as we continue our surveys. Perhaps you have experienced a great property deal which you would like to share with us so that we can extend our list and publish this information in our newspaper and on our website to keep our readers updated. 226 About Moving to Hua Hin; What the Locals Think

“My family and I are currently in Phuket and after doing some research have decided it may be a good idea to move to Hua Hin instead.”

“Did anyone else possibly make this move and was it for the better? Would we be getting away from the crazy that is Phuket or is Hua Hin also very touristy? What are the schools like and is there plenty to do with our kiddies?” This recent social media enquiry is very typical of basic questions posed by many considering moving to Hua Hin. We’ve looked at the posted responses from our expat population; not as a scientific survey, but as a ‘snapshot’ of how the locals see their lifestyle in Hua Hin. Typically our expats are very eager to say that choosing Hua Hin is the way to go; with just a few caveats along the way. There’s a clear message; move to Hua Hin; you’ll love it!

Mellow or Monotonous

Our expats reject the notion that Hua Hin is ‘too touristy’; especially when compared to Phuket, Koh Samui or Pattaya. That’s a feature which is a major bonus for most. On the negative side some may think that “compared to Phuket, Hua Hin is a very boring city; many retirees and no atmosphere;” or “not much social life for

younger people.” However these suggestions are rejected by most. In response to the ‘boring’ suggestion the locals say “Life is very much what you make of it. There is a very large expat community in Hua Hin both young and old. Sounds to me like you need to get out more and discover what the area has to offer”. Or more directly “Phuket is just a tourist trap!“

About the Environment

Hua Hin promotions often refer to local beaches but local expats don’t all agree that our beaches are that special. “Long beaches but much less beautiful (than Phuket) and a sea of an ugly colour; we never see the bottom.” Or “Hua Hin beach water is generally not blue or clean; a big downside” and “be careful on the beach at night in some spots with dogs.” However these comments about the ocean waters are generally overshadowed by other environmental considerations; “perfect for nature lovers and very popular with those that like outside action” and “I moved from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin mainly because of the pollution; the air is definitely cleaner down here.”

A general opinion that “the ocean is just OK” doesn’t seem to bother most! Many respondents mention areas away from the city with locations a little south of Hua Hin. Popular suggestions are “Head down the road to Pranburi, and then Pak Nam Pran; a lovely old fashioned fishing town. Yet another 15 kms to Dolphin Bay; if you want real quiet that’s the place to be” or “Pak Nam Pran, best place ever for me, my wife and five children.”

Transport and Services

Being within range of Bangkok is seen as a big plus, tempered by the desire for more air travel options. “The weak point is we don’t have many direct flights except Kuala Lumpur but we have easy excess to other tourist places and near Bangkok.” Or “If you need to go to Bangkok it’s 250 kms which I’ve done many times in a day, and the train is scheduled for the next 2 years.” Hua Hin Expats seem very happy about access to essential and recreational facilities without complaint. That includes education; “Hua Hin International is a top quality school”, “school has been just great, now got a 7 month old

and already booked in at the school my older children went to.” Health care and safety also receive big raps; “top class hospitals”, “amazing for my children, very safe, no crime at all, the local and tourist police are lovely, helpful if there ever is a problem.” With regard to recreation and dining, the level of satisfaction was very evident “good restaurants, nine golf courses, two shopping malls, three water parks, wake boarding, cinemas, sailing club and kite surfing” or “you have choices; a couple of shopping malls, a really nice upbeat outside market on the weekend with music, and good food choices.”

Cost of Living

Our locals believe there are significant cost benefits for family life in Hua Hin. “The cost of living and traffic are massive bonus points”, “I moved to HH three years ago; love it here, 25 % cheaper in housing” or “cost of living lower and traffic is better.” However some don’t entirely agree “Buying a house here is cheaper but a condo is more expensive. Rental Price here is a bit higher then Phuket.”

In Conclusion …………

It’s a human condition to be uncomfortable holding opinions and attitudes that contradict choices made. This ‘snapshot’ of comments from those who have chosen Hua Hin may need to be tempered because of that trait. We also haven’t heard the opinions of those who have chosen to leave Hua Hin. However the answer to the question; “is it a good idea to move to Hua Hin?” has received a resounding YES! “Hua Hin 100% better” is our expats’ response. Using words such as ‘mellow’, ‘tranquil’ or ‘peaceful, quiet and safe’ gives a clue to the preferred lifestyle. Is Hua Hin family friendly? “Hua Hin is the ideal place for a family” is the overwhelming opinion. Finally lots of encouragement to any would-be ‘Phukexiteer’; “come and visit, definitely not as touristy as Phuket, plenty of things for the kids to do and you’ll love it!” HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

What’s in a Name? FazWaz Hua Hin What’s the similarity between Google; the universally known internet search engine and FazWaz; Thailand’s prime property search operation? One answer is that both names bare little resemblance to the company purpose yet both are known, remembered and linked to that purpose. Brand recognition is what that’s all about and FazWaz has that recognition in real estate. “FazWaz was created to transform the way users find, research and buy properties in Thailand by providing tools, statistics and free information to empower them,” says co-founder and chief executive officer Michael Kenner.

A

t the heart of the business is a ‘data-driven’ property portal. “Our team of experts has designed our services with the aim of creating a transparent and free marketplace and [we] believe that this information should be easily accessible to everyone,” Mr Kenner adds.

employees. Within a distance of about 10 kilometres from central Hua Hin, FazWaz currently offers 1,742 properties from our last check of the website. There’s a comprehensive description of each property including multiple photos with maps and even a Google street view.

What the company refers to as ‘FazWaz 4.0’, is the latest version and recently online website (www. fazwaz.com) which continues the company’s emphasis on technology to empower those looking to buy, sell, rent or just learn more about the property market. That applies to mobile device users as this a preferred platform for many.

Enquiries about Hua Hin properties are likely to result in an introduction the person in charge of the FazWaz Hua Hin branch, Sales Director Stephen van de Merwe. Stephen says “I moved to Thailand early in 2011 before ever having been to Thailand or knowing anything about it at all - which has now proven to be one of the best choices I’ve made, especially since I landed up in Hua Hin, which I consider to be the best place to live in Thailand.

The FazWaz website offers simplicity in design and function but with very powerful property information access. Apart from properties classified by location, type (condo, villa, land etc.), number of bedrooms, amenities or special features, the price range you choose will offer properties at the lowest or unlimited end of the market and the title status of the property. FazWaz came to Hua Hin almost three years ago after being launched in Phuket in 2015. With a Bangkok head office, the company now has branches (not franchises) in Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket with around 100

I have been in the real estate industry in Hua Hin for about 8 years and I have seen this city grow considerably during that time. Having started working at the age of 15 in South Africa I learned the value of good service, clear communication, efficiency and being honest and up front as well as fair in all areas of business. Client satisfaction is a very important part of the business which is reflected in the number of word of mouth referrals that we get - as we do our utmost to

service every client, whether buyers or sellers, with the best knowledge and advice we have to offer” . Stephen often finds himself as a ‘pseudo tour guide’ to introduce the region to newcomers. As a part of his commitment to living in Thailand, he has studied and achieved fluency in both spoken and written Thai. Apart from easy communication with Thai people in both a social and business context, being able to understand legal documentation is a big advantage. FaxWaz Hua Hin has a modern office in downtown Hua Hin. Many travelling along Phetchakasem Road will have seen the distinctive name on signage before realising the nature of the business. That local presence means a personal introduction to the Hua Hin property market is always available. What’s in a name?; the name Fazwaz Hua Hin means realising what property technology can deliver. If you are looking for some very general information on the ‘net; just ‘Google it’; but if you are looking for property information, ‘FazWaz it’! HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

4 28 It’s Official - Hua Hin Has Thailand’s Best Weather! The attractions of visiting Thailand are many and varied. For some it’s about the friendly people, the traditions and culture or perhaps Thai cuisine. Enjoying a lifestyle that embraces the beaches, recreational opportunities and natural surrounds is also high on the list.

To enjoy these attractions, the weather must allow visitors to get outside unhindered by inclement conditions; that is temperature, humidity and especially persistent rain. During September 2019 parts of Thailand experienced extreme weather conditions after tropical storms including ‘Podul’ and ‘Kajiki’ wreaked havoc on northern provinces and Koh Chang was cut off from the mainland by stormy seas. Meanwhile weather around Hua Hin and the region stretching from Phetchaburi, past Cha-Am to Pranburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, remained uneventful with only intermittent showers hardly disturbing the outdoor lifestyle. This region enjoys more sunny days during the monsoon season than any other beach destination in Thailand.

The monsoon has less overall effect on daily life and holidays here than in any other part of the country for two major reasons.

First there is a mountain spine running the length of the Thai-Malay peninsula, rising just twenty kilometres behind Hua Hin. Despite these mountains being quite low, averaging below 2,000 metres, they cast a distinct rain shadow over the 20 kilometrewide coastal plain. When other parts of Thailand are being inundated by monsoon rain and floods, Hua Hin often remains dry and sunny. The second reason the monsoon has a

less impact than it does the beaches along Thailand’s west-facing Andaman coast, the islands in the gulf such as Koh Samui and its nearby neighbour Koh Phangan, comes from the region’s beaches facing the east. When monsoonal winds and rain power in, the beaches lie in a calm lee. While many beaches in Thailand, especially the Andaman ones, are pounded by waves, these beaches enjoy flat, calm seas with excellent swimming and water sports conditions – one of the only places in the country like this from May to October. The average daily temperature is remarkably consistent throughout the year. There is a greater variation in the amount of rain, however when compared with other regions in the country, these variations pale into insignificance. This may be described as a tropical savanna climate, with temperatures ranging from warm to hot throughout the year. The waters are consistently warm and the region has one of the lowest rainfall measurements of the entire country during the wettest season.

Taking a Closer Look at the Hua Hin Weather

Sitting on the north-eastern side of the peninsula, there are three main seasons. Let’s take a closer look at these seasonal variations in the Region and especially how they may impact on enjoying the tropical lifestyle.

The Peak Season – December to February

The “cool and dry” season lasts from December to February. The nights reach a welcome cool of around 22°C and the average daytime temperature is around 26°C through the entire season but peaks still reach 30°C so don’t expect to be cold! There is glorious sunshine 9 hours per day, although it is not as intense as the rest of the year, and the waters are perfect for all kinds of aquatic fun, with a constant temperature of 28-29°C. December is the driest month of the year, and rain is rarely experienced during this period or up to 10 mm at the most. Humidity is gentle at 70% on average, and the chances of clouds are also minimal. Christmas in Thailand is a favourite time for many foreigners as the weather is comfortably hot and dry enough to make a seaside holiday an absolute delight compared to the wintery weather experienced in Europe.

The Shoulder Season – March to June

Extending from March to June, the temperatures become higher with an average of 29°C. During 2019 the temperatures were hotter than usual with temperatures frequently in the mid 30’s and evenings staying hot and sometimes uncomfortable. However compared with some regions, particularly with northern locations rising to the 40 degree mark, outdoor activities weren’t out of reach and a cooling breeze from the ocean always present for beach goers. This is also a dry season with only a light shower or two appearing towards the end of April to signal the welcome cool change to come. The humidity is still moderate, at 75-78% on average, but it tends to become higher towards the end of the season. This is a time when SPF protection lotions, water and a hat are essential when you’re out and about in the summer sun.

The Off-Peak Season

The season between July until November is still labelled by some as the ‘Wet Season’ the ‘Monsoon Season’ or perhaps the ‘Green Season. However the ‘Green Season’ is only avoided by ‘green tourists’! This means a quieter time for yearround residents, with lower priced seasonal HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

‘specials’ including hotel room rates, rental properties costs and restaurant offers. Maybe the ‘Green Season’ really refers to golf course green fees, which may be up to 50% lower than during the Peak Season. The ‘Wet’ and ‘Monsoon’ labels are really unnecessary, without the full monsoon effect experienced by both the north and south of Thailand. Temperatures dwell around 28°C on average with the higher end at 33°C, and evening humidity levels are around 83% on average. Mornings can be overcast, but most days tend to be hot and humid rather than gloomy. Rainfall will average about 200mm in October as the wettest month of the year. October waters are a favourite for kiteboarding and parasailing and you can enjoy the beaches with plentiful sun for around 7 hours per day. More good news is that the rain tends to come in short bursts and will not fall every day. There aren’t long periods of drizzle, as you will see in North America and Europe, which means that outdoor enthusiast are not deterred on most days. It’s really just a matter of being prepared. An afternoon downpour late in the afternoon may mean seeking shelter for 30 or 40 minutes before resuming your bike ride under clear skies. These short, sharp showers may also be restricted to small ‘zones’. We’ve driven into the Hua Hin airport tunnel with windscreen wipers at full speed to emerge on the other side to a dry road without a dark cloud in sight! The bottom line is that the region’s yearround weather is unparalleled for those who want to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. Light clothing will be all you need at any time of year. Taking care of yourself in hot weather (drink lots of water) is much more important than being protected from storms, persistent rain and gloomy weather. Even if you do get caught in a rain shower you may be wet, but not cold! Sure you should have an umbrella on hand at times and sometimes need to seek shelter either undercover or in the comforts of air conditioning; but you’ll still be able to enjoy the great outdoors around Hua Hin almost any day, any time of the year.

More Than 20 Years Of Experience In The Hua Hin Property Market!

M

anora Property Hua Hin is a wellestablished real estate agency under Swiss management, with more than 22 years of involvement in the Hua Hin property market. They are a team of experienced, skilled and young professionals, sharing the same passion towards finding the right properties for their valued clients. The Manora Property Hua Hin was established in 1998 and has been a key player in the Hua Hin property market for more than two decades. The success story of Manora Co., Ltd. started after its founders Walter and Phitsamai Camenisch, decided to relocate from Switzerland to sunny Hua Hin and start a new life here. After traveling around Thailand for many years, Hua Hin became their first choice for relocation due to its good air quality, the best weather in all of Thailand and a charming character. The choice of business was obviously real estate due to the unlimited potential and high demand from Europeans, willing to retire in Hua Hin and surrounding areas. The first few years in business were rough due to the Asian crisis at the time, however, Manora managed to establish itself as professional, competent and honest service provider in the field of real estate in Hua Hin. Helping many foreigners to relocate, build and purchase a holiday or retirement home in Hua Hin, earned Manora a great reputation. This inevitably led to more business opportunities, such as the involvement in construction and sales of Sirin Villas 1 & 2, located on Soi 116, Hua Hin.

Soon after, Manora partnered with a team of Swedish investors and became involved in the property development. Their first major project was building several developments for the Swedish market, totaling over 300 villas in Baan Hua Yang, a sleepy village located about 130km from Hua Hin. Many satisfied clients and new high demand for properties led Manora on the path of property development, which became their primary business for the next fifteen years. Following the success and completion of the first projects, Manora started to build its own developments in the beautiful Khao Tao area, located only 15 kilometres south from Hua Hin town centre near the beach. Their first project, the Baan Manora, consisted of

five large and exclusive 2-story villas with 4-bedrooms, a large swimming pool and an enormous garden area. Due to its pleasant design, proximity to the beach and high quality construction, all the villas sold out extremely fast. Realising that there is a high demand for living in Khao Tao, the Manora Villages were born. From 2006 until 2017, Manora built 99 villas in total, across three different developments; Manora Village 1,2 & 3, and many other single-family homes as well as a commercial property in the area of Khao Tao. Today, with all the construction and active projects being completed, Manora Property Hua Hin agency, once again is the primary focus of Manora Co., Ltd., with a potential to develop more housing projects and singlestanding properties in the near future. The Manora Property Hua Hin’s office is based in Manora Village 1, Khao Tao. Their vibrant team consists of young and experienced professionals with various areas of expertise, focused on finding high-

quality residential and commercial properties on the Hua Hin property market. They provide the complete service in the field of sales and marketing management, as well as property management for the Manora Village developments. Having clear a understanding of their client’s needs and a great knowledge of the property market is a key to successfully guiding their customers with property acquisition and investments. The Manora team members are proud to integrate honesty, transparency and professionalism in all aspects of their work, in order to deliver the most pleasant buying or selling experience for their valued customers. Use their professional advice, years of experience and industry knowledge to capitalise on the Hua Hin property market and find the right choice that suits your needs and requirements. 6 30 The laws in Thailand may be significantly different from the home countries of many foreign residents. Thai Law For Foreigners is based on common questions put to the Chief Lawyer of one of the most experienced legal firms in Hua Hin. Of course each set of circumstances will differ and a qualified lawyer should always be consulted when legal issues arise.

Land Title Deeds

The Land Code provides many different types of Land Title Deeds (Chanod) as proof of occupation, possession and ownership of land. These Deeds are listed below: 1) Sor Khor 1 (No longer exists) An application informing the Government that the Applicant has occupied the land. This shall be used to issue a Chanod after the official surveying for the area has been completed.

Inheritance of Leasehold

2) Bai Jong (Nor Sor 2) A consent Letter issued by the Government which allows the Applicant to occupy and make use of the land temporarily. After occupying and making use of the land for a period of time as provided by law, the Applicant can then apply for the Land Title Deed Nor Sor 3 or Chanod. This kind of Title Deed is not transferable for a period of time as provided by law. 3) Land Usage Certificate (Nor Sor 3 / Nor Sor 3 Gor / Nor Sor 3 Khor) A certificate issued by the Government certifying that the Applicant who has made use of the Land, for 1 of 3 purposes. • Nor Sor 3 - issued by the Amphur for the area which has no aerial photography. • Nor Sor 3 Gor - issued by the Amphur for the area which has aerial photography by satellite. • Nor Sor 3 Khor - issued by the Land Office for the area which has no aerial photography. 4) Bai Tai Suan (Nor Sor 5) A letter proving the Land has been inspected for Title Deed issuance and then the Holder can apply for a Title Deed. 5) Chanod Proof of Ownership as provided by the Land Code. The Holder of Title Deeds stated above can apply for this then a Chanod can be issued as proof of ownership. Remarks: The Holder of Title Deeds Nos 1 to 4, only has Occupation/Possessory Right on the Land. The Holder of Title Deed No. 5, has Proof of Ownership. In general both have the same Right to use the Land legally, the only difference is the legal consequence of Adverse Possession or Squatter’s Rights, when someone who does

not have legal title to your land, attempts to claim legal ownership based on history of Possession or Occupation of the land without the permission of its legal owner. The Holder of Title Deed Nos: 1 to 4 will lose possession after 1 year of Adverse Possession or Squatter’s Rights as provided in Section 1367, 1374 & 1375 of the Civil and Commercial Code. The Holder of Title Deed No: 5 (Chanod) will lose Ownership after 10 years Adverse Possession or Squatter’s Rights as provided in Section 1382 of the Civil and Commercial Code. The Holder of Title Deed Nos 1 to 4 need to take extra care to visit their land regularly throughout the year to ensure that no one takes Adverse Possession or Squatter’s Rights. In general, Leasehold is not inheritable because it has been made in consideration of the personality of each person; that is the Lessor (a person who leases or lets a property to another; a landlord) and the Lessee (a person who holds the lease of a property; a tenant). This is a substantial consideration when a Lease Agreement/Contract is made. There is no doubt that the Lease Agreement/Contract will be terminated immediately by law when the Lessor or the Lessee dies, therefore, the Leasehold is not inheritable to the Lessee’s heir because the Lease ceases to exist. Recently there was a Judicial Judgment of the Supreme Court, Case No: 11058/2559 which made some changes to this principle. The Supreme Court now considers that the heir can inherit a Lease when the Lessee dies. For this to occur, there are two exceptional preconditions.

30-year Lease

The Lease Agreement was for up to 30 years (not a lifetime) There is a clause that the Lessee has the right to transfer the Leasehold or Sub-Lease to any third person without any consent from the Lessor. In these circumstances the qualifying personality of the Lessee or Sub-Lessee was determined not to be a substantial concern. The Supreme Court made a decision that the Lease is still effective even though the Lessee has died; therefore, the heirs of the Lessee can inherit the Lease for the remaining Lease duration. This decision of the Supreme Court was made under resolution of the Supreme Court General Meeting No: 9/2559 (2016) and will be of benefit to other later cases with this issue.

Acting in Good Faith

A recent case in a Hua Hin Court involved a foreigner who had set up a Company using a nominee Thai shareholder with 51% of the shares and the foreigner having 49% of the shares and named as the authorised director to buy land. Several years after purchasing land, during a visit from his home country, the foreigner saw someone constructing a house on the Company’s land. That person claimed that the land belonged to him having purchased it from the Company. In a civil case against the buyer, it was claimed that the Purchasing Contract was void because the Thai shareholder of the company had committed a crime by falsifying documents and the foreigner’s signature to amend the Company’s registration. It was claimed that the Thai shareholder had unlawfully named himself as the authorised director so that he could sell the land. The buyer defended the case stating that he had bought the land in Good Faith and paid for it, so he should be protected by law. As the Company amendments had been made using false documents, the Judge’s decision was that the sale was void because a crime had been committed. The unlawfully authorised Thai Director was unable to act on behalf of the Company to sell the land, therefore, the land purchasing contract and any subsequent transactions were void. The land was then returned to the foreigner. To Act in Good Faith and Pay is not protected in all cases. Provided by: © Jatupon Cherbangkaew; Executive Partner / Chief Lawyer; ACTA Law Firm Co. Ltd. Rosse Immobilien Co.,Ltd.

When you think about Rosse Immobilien Co., Ltd., Real Estate Agents in Hua Hin, it is not a one-man operation, rather a large team that works to deliver the best outcomes for their clients The company was established in 2007 by Martin Rosse and has quickly developed a solid reputation in the real estate and property development industry in Hua Hin. The company’s clients consist of mainly German and Swiss nationals, however with over 20 staff employed, 3 team members who speak German and English along with Thai nationals, this means that Rosse Immobilien can work across many facets of the property industry and liaise with potential clients from anywhere on the planet.

Martin’s team are able to consult should you opt to build your own property in Thailand. Their team of designers can step you through a range of floor plans, finishes and furnishings, so that you get exactly what you desire. They have also aligned themselves with a trusted legal team, so you have peace of mind when in the contract stage. They can also assist with visas for expats moving to Thailand, so they really are a one stop shop with regards to real estate. As an agent, Martin was involved in the sale of many properties; properties he had no involvement in building. Some years down the track, he witnessed first-hand some of the problems new owners experienced. It was with this in mind that Martin realised the only way to be able to continue to deal with his clients with a good heart was to have his own company, but ultimately, he also needed to be in full control of the project from beginning to end. Working closely with Martin is Knut Lindermann, who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge plus they have a team of people who have experience in marketing, accounting and manufacturing. In around 2014, Rosse Immobilien started by buying one block of land, then a second block. This was the genesis of his first project which included 7 villas and a 2 story house. As Martin’s personal reputation grew, his customer base became extremely trusting and began recommending his company to others. The new project has been close to 3 years from planning to completion of stage 1; Palm Avenue it is called and it is in Tambon Hin Lek Fai, just 500m from the main Pala U Road and not far from the Somtawin Witaedsuksa Huaymongkhon School. Khun Nui is the project manager and oversees every detail from maintenance, to coordinating materials and working with the construction team. The construction is aligned to German standards and the 22 luxury villas in stage 1 are already sold out, showing how sought after this project has been. The 18 luxury units of stage 2 are also well underway. For those purchasing property as an investment, Rosse Immobilien also guarantees a 6% rental return on this project, which is unheard of in today’s market. As the developer of this project, they have been able to be 100% hands on with contractors, making sure that the construction is of the utmost quality with the finishes being second to none. All the interior cabinetry and built-ins are done by Khun Nong and his team who are a part of the Rosse Immobilien staff. Included in the purchase price and rental guarantee is the ability to stay for one month free of charge. Should you require finance for their project, they have consultants to speak to you and negotiate a loan on your behalf.

The strength of the baht is currently of major concern for Rosse Immobilien customers, as most are Europeans looking to buy. Today, prices for new properties are between 10 and 20% more than they were only a few years back, though there are certainly some bargains for expats wanting pre-owned homes. If you’re after the best quality, though, prices remain where they were. As Hua Hin is an attractive retirement destination for expats, many of those deciding to retire here are pensioners and the strong baht has reduced their buying power somewhat. Conversely, due to the exchange rate, those wishing to sell their property are often able to lower the price to accommodate a quicker sale in the market, yet once converted to the Euro or British Pound, the returns are not so bad for those wishing to sell up and move away from Thailand. For rentals it is important that the property is ready for occupation so the Rosse Immobilien team, headed up by Khun Ning, go into the property one day prior to the commencement of the rental contract and make sure everything is looking spic and span for the tenant. When the tenant moves in, they are there to go through the property with the tenant, noting anything of import for when the tenant vacates. This helps protect both the tenant and owner. When the contract is up, it all works in reverse, with the team coming in to inspect and upon clearance, the bond is returned and the property is again placed on the market. Ullie Lindemann oversees the rental side by supporting the team with any necessary translation support to ensure the clients are happy. At the moment, they have around 200 condos for rent in Hua Hin, with others scattered all over Thailand in places like Bangkok, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. The Rosse Immobilien team sincerely wants to ensure that all clients are satisfied with their services, which in turn establishes trust and the “word of mouth” referral this generates is invaluable. Martin and his team prefer to try and match the right property to the right client, not just make the sale or rental to lock away the profit; “it’s about what is best for the client….always!” Their helpful website can guide you towards your ideal rental property or new dream home. There is also a section on furniture to make filling your new home child’s play. If you are wondering what to do in Hua Hin, they’ve got you covered there as well, with a comprehensive guide to dining out, nightlife, outdoor activities, shopping and much more. Subscribe to their site for up to date property news. How to Get Around Hua Hin

There are many choices of transportation for getting around Hua Hin, and we cover them all in this map. If you stay near the centre it’s possible to walk to most places. If you stay a bit further from the town centre, you may want to choose from the various public transportation options available including songthaews, tuk tuks, motorcycle taxis, tricycles, bicycles or minivans. You can check them all here in our Hua Hin Today Map for your guide.

worth of petrol. Please be aware that an approved driver’s license is required to avoid a financial penalty or perhaps to invalidate an insurance policy. It is also illegal for both the driver and passenger not to wear a helmet apart from safety issues. Many a visitor has been injured or worse after a motorcycle accident; be very wary and never drink and ride!

Bicycle Rental

Motorcycle Taxi

These are more reasonably priced, starting at 20 Baht per person. From the train station to the night market costs 30 Baht, as does a trip from the night market to the beach. You’ll see motorcycle taxis on many street corners, with the drivers wearing mainly orange or orange jackets with numbers at the back and front. Negotiate the price beforehand.

Tuk Tuk

A tuk tuk is rather an expensive means of transportation in Hua Hin. For a very short journey of 1 km we were charged 100 Baht, which the driver claimed is the minimum fare; but it’s a fun ride at a reasonable price if you travel in groups of 4 – 6 people and share the fare. You will find tuk tuks parked all around the city. Most people used them when they needed to transport goods or luggage.

Tricycle

This is a 3-wheeled rickshaw. These tricycles travel much slower as the driver has to ‘pedal’ you around town, which is good if you want to travel in a slower pace and see the town’s surroundings more up-close and personal. Again, negotiate the price HUA HIN TODAY, 16 - 31 December 2019

One of the cheapest means of traveling around town is the bicycle. Many Europeans prefer renting a bicycle because it gives you more freedom when pedaling around Hua Hin and at the same time doing exercise. A day’s rental wouldn’t cost you more than 100 Baht ($3).

with two-row of seats at the back, and is one of the cheapest ways (and the most popular) to get around the city, with prices starting at just 10 Baht per trip, depending on the distance you’ll be traveling. The songthaews operates along three designated routes, with 3 different coloured songthaews, each covering different routes. Green songthaews covers from Hua Hin Airport to Khao Takiab (10-20 Baht) Orange songthaews covers from Soi Mae Kep, Market Village all the way to Makro (10-20 Baht) White songthaews covers from Hua Hin to Mongkol Temple (10-40 Baht) and Hua Hin City (10 Baht) Green operates from 06:20 - 21:00 hours Orange operates from 06:00 - 22:00 hours White operates from 08:00 - 18:00 hours (Hua Hin to Huay Mongkol Temple) and 07:00 - 22:00 hours (Hua Hin City)

Walking

Songthaew

Motorcycle Rental

If you want more flexibility or want to travel to lots of places, you can rent a motorcycle for around 150-200 Baht per day. You’ll see rental shops around the city, or just ask your hotel staff. Renting a motorcycle, gives you more freedom and you can travel longer distances. A trip from Hua Hin to Cha Am (around 25 km away), will only cost you around 60 Baht

A songthaew is a modified pickup truck

This is my favourite way of getting around. And best of all, it’s free. You also get to stop wherever you want, take whatever route you want, and discover more of the city.

Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan

With a breezy seaside location 12km north of Hua Hin, this summer palace – Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan – was built in 1924 during the reign of Rama VI. Set in a beautiful garden with statuesque trees and stunning sea views, it’s a series of 18 interlinked teak buildings with tall, shuttered windows and patterned fretwork built upon stilts. The functional but elegant style of the palace was a result of Rama VI suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; the court’s Italian architect designed it to maximise air circulation and make the most of the seaside location. A renovation means there will be no interior access for many years (access may not resume even after the renovation is finished, but this is still uncertain), which is unfortunate, but it’s lovely on the outside too and still worth a visit. There’s also a nature trail here. The palace is within the grounds of Camp Rama VI, a military base. It’s easiest to get here with private transport but you can also catch a Hua Hin–Cha-am bus and ask to be dropped off at the camp’s front gate. As this is a royal palace, legs and arms must be covered, otherwise you’ll have to pay 20B to wear a sarong.

Hua Hin’s station Hua Hin’s popularity began to increase in the 1920’s as the railway line from Bangkok was constructed and King Rama VI built Klai Kangwon Palace as a summer retreat.

Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin--this Buddhist temple is home to the world’s largest statue of Luang Phor Thuad, a legendary southern Thai monk revered for his enlightenment and ability to perform miracles. Many believe that the amulets created in his image guarantee safety in times of distress. The statue, set within a park-like setting that attracts many visitors each weekend, was commissioned by HM Queen Sirikit and is the first thing you see when approaching Hua Hin from Highway 4 (heading to Prachuab Kirikhand).

Hua Hin’s station is one of the oldest in Thailand and its main feature is The Royal Waiting Room that used to welcome King and his court when they were visiting the town. Originally, it was situated at Sanamchan Palace in Nakom Pathom and was known as Plub Pla Sanamchan. Eventually, the room was tranported to Hua Hin. It is designed in the same style as Maruekkhathayawan Palace and is an attraction not to be missed if you are staying in Hua Hin. The train station is located at the top (west end) of Damnoern Kasem Road.

Plearnwan Vintage Village PlearnWan is an open-air market built around buildings that resemble old villages of Hua Hin Hin in 1950’s and 60’s. There are small stalls with food and local products as well as Vintages Shops to keep visitors busy shopping for few hours. For Children, there are a few rides to keep them occupied and an Ice cream shop to keep them cool. Plearnwan is quiet during the day but gets very busy during the weekends when the Bangkokians come to town. The location satisfies 3 of Thailand’s favorite pastimes: shopping, taking pictures and eating. Opening Hours are: 10:30 - 19:00 Location: Just North of King’s palace on Petchkasem Road.

Cicada Market- The Arts Market

A night market not to be missed is Cicada market in Kao Takiab Hua Hin. The Market is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday night only. The market has many unusual stalls selling items made locally, so you will find less mass-produced items in this contemporary art market. The location is based in park with beautiful fairy lights dotting the trees and small stalls selling goods and food. Most evenings there is musician and art performances in the Amphitheatre at the park. Also do not miss to detour to Tamarind Market that is just next door but with a heavier focus on food. Both places are a must see in Hua Hin! Opening Hours: Friday-Sunday starting 5pm-11pm Address: 83/159 Nong Kae-Khao Takiap Rd (next To Hyatt entrance)

There are changing rooms with locker facilities close to the park entrance. Lockers are provided free of charge but do require a 500 Baht deposit for the magnetic keys that are safe to take into the water pools. A towel rental service is available for 100 Baht.

Monsoon Valley

Monsoon Valley was founded in 2001 by Chalerm Yoovidhya, a wine-loving entrepreneur with a vision to create a Thai wine culture. Upon returning from his studies abroad, Chalerm saw potential in growing grapes in his beloved native Thailand and set out to show the world that great wines can be crafted even at the 13th latitude of the northern hemisphere. His first vineyard was at Tab Kwang, in beautiful Khao Yai, a region known as the ‘traditional’ grapegrowing region of Thailand. Surrounded by national parks and jungle, the choice for this area was perfect as the fertile red soil and convenient climate conditions created the best platform for making opulent and rich Shiraz. After initial success in Tab Kwang, he explored other areas of Thailand that would give birth to great wines.

Local golfers are often asked by newcomers or visitors what are the best regional golf courses to play. That’s not an easy question to answer; golf course conditions change as well as facilities and costs. Thus, our recommendation for golfers to visit during the period “Hua Hin & Cha-am Golf Festival 2019â€? is Majestic Creek Golf Club & Resort. Majestic Creek Golf Club Hua Hin & Resort is one of the most favourite golf courses among local golfers. The layout is criss-crossed by natural streams that add to the challenge, and indeed, the beauty of the course. It’s suitable for golfers of all levels, but low handicappers will enjoy the difficulty presented by several large water hazards. Majestic Creek Golf Club has been cut through the original jungle and follows the natural contours of the land, while this verdant landscape may not be as well-manicured as some of the other courses in Hua Hin, it nevertheless gives it a lovely natural feel. Most holes have water hazards, as well as excellent bunkering, which rewards precise shots. All visitors are welcome to come and play and why not make Majestic Creek your holiday base? Our up and coming â€˜Stay and Play’ deals and long stay packages will be unbelievable value for money, so check them out and start planning your golfing break in this Golfer’s Paradise. Please call +66 (0)81-942-3619, email bookings@majesticcreekcc.com, or browse our website: www.majesticcreekcc.com to reserve for Green Fee. There will be a very warm welcome for you here at the Majestic Creek Golf Club and Resort and we look forward to seeing you soon.

39 Rajabhakti Park

Rajabhakti Park, located in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, is a historically themed park honouring past Thai seven kings from the Sukhothai period to the current royal house of Chakri. The seven kings made great contributions to the country in each period of Thai history.

Tel. +66 (0) 86 369 3604

They are King Ram Khamhaeng (reigned 1279-1298) of the Sukhothai period, King Naresuan (1590-1605) and King Narai (1656-1688) of the Ayutthaya period, King Taksin (1767-1782) of the Thonburi period, and King Rama I (1782-1809), King Mongkut (1851-1868), and King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910) of the Rattanakosin period. They were designed by Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. His Majesty the King (King Rama IX) granted royal permission for the Royal Thai Army to build this park. He also gave this historical park the name “Rajabhakti Park,” which means the park built with the people’s loyalty to the institution of the monarchy. Rajabhakti Park is open to visitors every day, between 8:00 and 18.00 hours. No entrance free. You must follow cover your shoulders and knees – clothes are available to borrow.
