The Yingluck Shinawatra government wants to “The Hua Hin route is the only way connecting build four high-speed train lines from Bangkok to the Thai-Malaysian border, at Padang Besar in upcountry as part of a 2-trillion-baht infrastructure Songkhla province,” he said yesterday on the investment. sidelines of the Home Buyers’ Expo/NPA Grand The high-speed projects would be built in phases, with only the Rayong-Pattaya route likely to be finished in one stage.

A study by a consultancy hired by the government showed the Bangkok-Hua Hin route would see an economic rate of return (ERR) of 10.7%, less than the 12% benchmark set by the Transport Ministry.

Construction of the first phase of the four routes _ Bangkok-Phitsanulok, Bangkok-Hua Hin, Bangkok-Rayong and Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima _ would be completed by 2019. The Bangkok-Hua Hin route would stretch 225 kilometres at a cost of 82 billion baht.

Chula Sukmanop, director-general of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, said if the route is not worth the investment, the ministry should invest in other routes instead.

But Mr Chadchart said the route would see a higher ERR if the development extended to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon or farther.

In June, MR Pridiyathorn Devakula called on the government to cancel its planned development of four high-speed rail routes, arguing they would not be worth the cost. The former Bank of Thailand governor referred to a study that said some routes would need as many as 41,000 passengers a day or 15 million a year to break even, totals that exceed domestic airline passengers at the moment. were asked to monitor and prosecute those violating the law. In terms of parking cars or motorcycles at the footpath, a regulation of parking was imposed. Moreover, one more turning point for cars between Ban Hua Na and Minitel Hotel in front of the local office of electricity generating authority was approved because it can solve traffic problem effectively.

According to the Prachuab Governor Mr. Weera Sriwattanatrakul, the meeting agenda focuses on traffic problems during rush hours, holidays and weekends as well as ‘footpath seizure’ by some street vendors or taxi drivers. These problems reportedly affect people in Hua Hin and tourists.

Mr. Weera added that all the programs to solve traffic problem proposed by public authorities should be monitored by the media who will help make announcement to the public. In terms of a one-way route on Sra Song and Damnern Kasem Roads, Mr. Weera said he agreed with it, but representatives of Hua Hin Municipal Council and local community should acknowledge this plan. Moreover, before launching the plan, a public hearing should take place and stakeholders will be invited for further discussion.

At present, many streets of Hua Hin are scattered by signboards, billboards, rubber cones and tree branches. The more the streets are obstructed, the worse the traffic in Hua Hin will become. To make things more complicated, some street vendors are taking over footpaths as their own to do business. Also, some shops along the streets have roofs so long that, when it rains, Finally, the Prachuab governor would like Hua Hin municipal executives to the rainwater falls down from the roof, making pedestrians unable to walk think about how to deal with urban growth in the near future by formulating on the footpath conveniently. To solve the problems, municipal officials a city plan in the center and outskirt of Hua Hin.

Government’s New Education Curriculum “Almost Finished”

N

ext year, some Thai students will be getting more than new tablets. They will be trying out a whole new curriculum. The Education Ministry’s work on reforming the national school curriculum is almost finished, Pawit Thongroj, an adviser to the Minister says. The curriculum overhaul has been a priority for Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana and was moved ahead by the curriculum reform committee chaired by Mr Pawit. He said the reform included reviewing the best education practices from several countries, including Finland. “The curriculum overhaul is now about 80% complete,” Mr. Pawit said. “The overhaul focuses on more appropriatecontent based on students’ age and brain development.” Initially, only about 3,000 schools, or 10% of the nationwide total will be involved. The new curriculum will beimplemented at the start of the 2014 academic year for Prathom 1, Prathom 4, Mathayom 1 and Mathayom 4 classes. Content for Prathom 1 and 2 students (Grades 1 and 2) will mainly focus on three subjects – maths, Thai and English – while older students will study more subjects in more detail. In addition, Mr. Pawit said the new curriculum will encourage students to learn more outside the classroom by themselves, beyond what they learn from their teachers. In Finland, teachers spend more time focused on researchbased learning for their students, he said. Beginning at the kindergarten level, students are encouraged to come up with their own questions as a way to search for the answers.

ating Thai food with Thai people is a reminder about how different our eating habits are. Although you’re probably not going to offend anybody by holding your spoon the wrong way or taking too much yam wun sen, understanding how Thai people eat will undoubtedly smooth your way and maybe even provide a greater understanding of the food and people. So here are a few tips on how to eat like the Thais do:

he Hua Hin Today team has been waiting for a month for Aree’s House to start serving Cheese Fondue. We knew it was coming but the owner of Aree’s House is very particular with his Fondue. He didn’t want just any ingredients he wanted “THE SWISS” cheese fondue ingredients from Switzerland. His Fondue is specifically from the Fribourg Alps and made of 50% Gruyere and 50% Vacherin cheese, you can’t be more authentic than this. I am sure it’s not as simple as just adding bunch of cheese to a pot as each Fondue has its own secret ingredients. For those of you who might not know the background of Fondue, it originated around the 16th or 18th Century in Switzerland or France, depending on who you listen to or their nationality. Originally it is said that Fondue started when in the winter months the peasants had a scarcity of fresh food but plenty of hardened bread and old cheese that was hard to eat. The people realised if they added some wine, garlic and herbs to the cheese it would make a delicious brew, solving the problem with the hardened cheese and the bread softening in the process. The word Fondue comes from the word melt in French (fondre). Cheese Fondue is the original but since then Meat Fondues, Chocolate Fondues and many other fondues have cropped up. Fondue is eaten communally with everyone dipping into their Fondue with bread with a continuously boiling Fondue pot.

How did we enjoy the cheese Fondue at Aree’s House? Ok, I ate most of it and I do not care what anyone says. That’s what happens when you eat with three people sharing a pot and they spend all their time talking in French. Talk is for later when the food is gone is my opinion. In other words the fondue was very good, just the right mix of cheese with a hint of wine and some other “secret” ingredients. Aree’s serves two sizes of Fondues; 440 grams for 1-2 persons 790 THB or 880 grams for 3-4 persons for 1,550 THB. Fondue is very deceptive in size and you might think that’s you haven’t eaten much but then the bread swells in your tummy and you are very full indeed. This was the case with me. I have always loved Fondue, in either tropical or cold climates. I used to save all my student money so I could eat Fondue in an old hotel in my former hometown of Singapore that made fantastic fondue when I was young. That hotel and the fondue expert are long gone so I am happy to know that when a cheese attack enters my mind I can go to Aree’s House for a happy food coma. Try it and don’t share, it’s ok to be greedy when it comes to Fondue. Aree’s House Address: 130/3, Soi 55, Chomsin Road, HUA HIN Tel. +6632531353

1. Order a balance of dishes.- You may all want to eat phat thai, but it’s actually a jaan diaow, a one-plate meal typically enjoyed by one person eating alone. When eating with others, try to order dishes that everybody can share (i.e. virtually everything except phat thai or any another noodle dish). Also, try to order a good balance of dishes. Ordering four coconut milk-based curries is a bad idea you’ll almost certainly regret later. Perhaps order one fried vegetable dish, one sour soup and one uncooked dish, perhaps a yam (Thai-style salad), or a naam phrik (chili dip). Throw in a grilled or deep-fried fish and you’ve got yourself a phat meal. This is very easy to do in most restaurants, and allows you to truly sample the variety of Thai cooking. 2. Always eat your food with rice. Some may remember growing up with families ordering Chinese food and how the rice would always end up unopened in its white container until, several months later it solidified and went sour and was eventually thrown away. Needless to say that’s not the way to do it in Thailand. In fact, it’s hard to imagine eating anything such as a spicy kaeng som or a phat fai daeng without rice. In Thailand, rice is the “base” of the meal, much like bread elsewhere. And since the flavours of Thai cooking are so strong, you’re going to want something to tone it down a bit anyway. There are many Thais who, in leaner times, have had little more to eat than a plate of rice and maybe a splash of fish sauce.

3. Dishes are shared. - This is one concept that foreigners seem to have a particularly difficult time with. If you dine with Thais, they’ll ask you to order one or two dishes that you fancy. However when these dishes arrive they are no longer “your” dishes to horde, rather they belong to everybody. On the same note, when serving yourself, you are expected to take one bite at a time, not one serving from the central dish. Scraping a huge pile of food onto your rice can be seen as greedy here. And there are no “courses” per se in Thai food, so eat everything as it comes. 4. Use a fork and spoon. - This is another big difference that has a couple of dimensions. When dining informally, or with close friends, there often won’t be any serving spoons. Thais use the same spoon they’ve just shoved into their mouth to pick food from the central dish. And for those who are unsure about the mechanics of the fork and spoon, here’s how it’s done: With your right hand, use your spoon (or the communal spoon, if one is provided) to take the equivalent of one bite of food from the central dish. Put this directly on top of some of the rice on your plate. Holding the fork in your left hand, use it to push the now fooddrenched mound of rice back onto your spoon. Eating directly from the fork may be considered crude. During the meal there are two things that you should never do. One is licking your fingers and the other is to blow your nose. If you cannot avoid blowing your nose then excuse yourself from the table and go to the rest room. Because the food is so delicious it may be easy to eat every last bite on your plate. However try to remember to leave just a little on the plate. An empty plate means that you are still hungry and since Thai’s pride themselves on ensuring their guests have plenty to eat they will feel that they have failed if the plate is clean.

The Hua Hin Hills Vineyard Experience Fine Dining and Wining in a Perfect Vineyard Setting

Driving to the Hua Hin Hills Vineyard should be a pleasant drive in the countryside.

A

round 40 kilometres from Hua Hin you just need to follow the main route (No. 3219) towards Pala U Waterfall then turn off left after 30 kilometres. The route is well signposted and an easy cruise passed a number of other regional tourist destinations.

Our host Restaurant and Retail Supervisor Chiraphan Permsuwan at the Sala Restaurant presented a selection of tapas creations each accompanied by a fine wine from the vineyard Monsoon Valley Wines range. The pairing of food with a particular style of wine is an important aspect of a ‘wine culture’. It’s not about being a wine snob but it is about experiencing the best pallet experience when dining.

Our chosen selections were all a delicate combination of very subtle flavour variations presented in a visually imaginative and creative way. The restaurant offers those not familiar with this pairing of food and wine with recommendations of how to choose and what to expect. A clear recommendation to anyone who is uncertain about this aspect of their wining and dining menu choices is to believe that the very talented management and staff really understand how to maximise every Back on track, although half an hour late for customer’s culinary indulgence. Once again our booking, entering the vinery property was I was reminded of my visits to Margaret River entering a landscape like no other in Thailand. where fine dining is a priority for every visitor. The Sala Restaurant should not be regarded as a lesser quality or less sophisticated approach. This is a world class wine and dine venue which is already gaining the international plaudits it deserves. However my passenger, the appointed ‘navigator ‘was perhaps a little too obsessed with a number of stray dogs on the road (“be careful!, be careful!’) and with a some light rain seemed to think it was more important to play with the windscreen wipers than to pay attention to the signs. The result was we missed the turn off, almost made it to the waterfall and had to ask some bemused locals for some directions.

My only personal discomfort was an expectation that I would be able to describe the individual pallet sensations in the manner of an educated wine connoisseur. My inadequate vocabulary struggled to express these subtle flavor variations. My apologies to our hosts for my inadequate descriptions and praise for such a sensational dining experience.

From the elevated restaurant and visitor information pavilion set high above the rows of vines we gazed across a green valley with a backdrop of hills and mountains encircling this secluded precinct. I was reminded of the many trips I have made to vineyards in the Margaret River area of South Western Australia. Only the distant forests of Eucalyptus trees were missing, replaced by the no less scenic Thai flora and flora. However this setting was once an elephant, rather than a kangaroo corral! We had two main purposes for our visit. Firstly to experience and discuss how a new attitude towards wine appreciation is being introduced into Thailand culture and second to see firsthand how the vineyard is being developed with an escorted tour of the grounds.

Next, off in an open vehicle to drive around the vineyard, stopping off to discuss with the viticulture manager Khun Cho Rai aspects of grape cultivation and managing the estate. Unfortunately our visit coincided with a change in arrangements for elephant riding around the grounds. In the near future this truly Thailand mode of transport will return as the management is now making arrangements for elephants to once again grace the vineyard grounds. Efforts are now being made to ensure that an elephant experience will be beneficial for visitors but also for the elephants. They want to ensure that this will not be insensitive or distressful for either man or beast.

Growing grapes for either wine production or as table grapes in Thailand is not easy. There are many different climatic, soil and pest considerations to those managed in vineyards in the usual latitudes of viniculture. One example described by Khun Cho Rai is the fear of rain after pruning the vines. Pruning takes place twice a year and rain soon after the process is likely to attract fungal disease and a major problem for the crop to come. I couldn’t help but notice the cheerful demeanor of the field workers who, despite the hard manual work, seemed to be appreciating the ‘fruit of their labour’. Of course work at the vineyard is a bonus for the local economy and nearby villages as one of the unseen benefits of this development.

The origins of the vineyard can be traced back to successful experimentation at the nearby Royal Research Station at Huay Sai in 2003. The vineyard is another testament to the foresight of this program of innovation in Thai agricultural development. Not only grapes of five varieties are under From the valley floor and looking back towards cultivation, but also olive trees, fruit and the restaurant and other visitor facilities vegetables. In most cases this means that fresh the integration of the Thai architecture with produce from the vineyards ensures the quality this scenic setting becomes apparent. Six Golf Tips to Save Your Back G olf puts stress on your back. So it’s no surprise when golfers come down with back injuries—a problem that can sideline you for months. If you try to play through it, you can hurt other parts of your body trying to compensate for the injury, including your shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The best way to deal with a back injury is to avoid them altogether. Below are some golf tips to help take stress off your back when swinging.

Below are six moves that help eliminate back pain: 1. Turn your front shoulder down (backswing) 2. Bend your back knee (backswing) 3. Squat with your lower body (downswing 4. Shift weight to front foot (impact) 5. Thrust pelvis toward target (finish) 6. Stand up to normal height (finish) Basically, these six moves we describe take pressure off your lumber spine (lower back), which was never intended to twist. They also help add power to your swing. On the backswing you must maintain a bent right knee and turn your shoulder down before starting your swing. Maintaining a bent knee prevents the right side of your pelvis from becoming higher than the left. More important, it prevents the bottom vertebrae from turning left, putting stress on them. Turning the shoulder down lets the midback handle the twisting, not the lower back. As you come down, make a slight squatting move. Squatting lets you use your thighs (quadriceps) and butt (glutes) to promote a lateral move to the left, taking stress off your back. It also adds power to

your swing. If you don’t squat, the only way for you to generate power is to torque your spine, which isn’t good. At impact, your body weight should be over your left leg and your shoulders/hips should be level and turning open. This enables your hips to do most of the rotational work, not your lumbar spine. Your lumbar spine was meant to stabilize your upper torso. Twisting it causes pain. As you complete your swing, thrust your pelvis forward and stand up. This move lets your left glute and core muscles absorb the swing’s stress. When you finish, you should be standing at your normal height.

The elder brother, Asanee, is known for his guitar solos and his wild, “rock star” persona. The bespectacled Wasan is known for his sensitive songs and softer, gentler style. Their songs often include a hook chorus sung by female backing vocalists. WEDNESDAY NIGHT MARKET CHA-AM Complete With Husband Minding Centre!

If you go to the Cha-Am Wednesday Night Market you may choose to enter on the left where a lane takes you past a variety of food stalls. About 100 metres on the left side and you will come across one of the features of the Market. This is a very innovative ‘extra’ to the usual market scene, the ‘Falang Husband Minding Centre’. This free service provides for the care, protection and safety of many falang husbands who are not ‘brousers’ while their wives go about their shopping without concerns. Husbands will then be out from under your feet, not complaining (“when are we going home”) and your shopping can procede undisturbed! All the wives need to do is pay for drinks (usually beer!) then collect them and take them home. The Wednesday Night Market is a Cha-Am institution and a must visit see for every visitor. As soon as the sun goes down a usually quiet part of town comes alive with a huge range of stalls with vendors offering everything imaginable. The Market is not really set up as a tourist attraction and the vast majority of the shoppers are local Thai people, many of whom are there every week. However it’s a great Thai experience for travellers and you can see many of the local produce and products in one venue. The Market is HUGE! It would probably take you an hour just to walk down each ‘shopping lane’ even without actually stopping to buy. What Will You Find? Food: from donuts to dumplings, from bugs to biscuits, from chicken to chillies, from cockles to cake, from seafood to sausages and from pasta to popcorn. And of course Thai delicacies too many to mention. For Kids: From stuffed animals to train rides and from bouncy castles to ballons. Kids just wonder around with wide eyes unable to decide on which special treat to take home. For Adults: From electronics to cosmetics, from tools to trophies, from shoes to shoulder bags and as many varieties of t shirts as could could ever

imagine. Clothing of all sorts some new, some second hand, some original and some may have ‘fallen of the back of a truck’. Videos, CDs and all the macines to play them. Animals: Puppies, kittens, fish, rabbits and birds. Even some ‘look alikes’ that you eventually realise are really battery powered. Where is it? The Market entrance is on Narathip Road starting at the roundabout about 500 metres before the Cha-Am Railway Station. From the intersection of Narathip and Petchaksem Road (traffic lights) if you are coming from Hua Hin turn left, go straight on and you can’t miss it. The Market sprawls through a network of lanes alongside the Railway Lines, the Government offices and permanent shops. When Is It Open? Every Wednesday from sunset (about 5.30pm) untill about 10.00pm. Early is better as the choice is better and some stall holders may choose to go home early. Our Tips? Parking may be difficult for vehicles with more than two wheels, better to leave your car either at home or outside the area and take a motor bike taxi? Transport away from the Market is limited to motor bike taxis, so other arrangements may need to be made if you have a family group. Don’t eat before you visit or plan to eat later. There is plenty of choice (with drinks) and you can find seating for a very casual (no flash restaurants), entertaining (watch the passing parade) and delicious (try cooked grasshoppers?) Thai style dining experience. Come prepared with suitable footwear. If there is rain about it may be muddy underfoot so no high heels! Take your time. No need to rush around, it’s likely to be busy so just enjoy mingling with the locals.

Peter plays the guitar and sings and Flemming plays the bass guitar. They jam with various other artists and if you go to see them you never know what will happen. I even heard they jammed with an opera singer once but still kept it “Bluesy”. They play mostly music by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, T Bone Walker and occasionally the Rolling Staones and Clearance Clearwater Revival. There seemed to be a bunch of regulars attending so our own Hua Hin Blues Bands has diehard groupies. Hua Hin City Blues Band plays 7.30-10.30 at Mekong Café. El Murphy hosts a local band by the name of the Stone Head Band that plays rock like it should be played with long hair and all. Catering mostly to rock oldies, this is a place where your foot starts taping even if haven’t heard the songs for a while. The band plays 7 days a week and caters to locals and farangs alike. It is ‘kid friendly’ and we sat next to a father and son team enjoying the band with a one beer for the dad and coke for the son. You can sit inside or outside and of course you can see the latest football as well, it is an Irish bar after all. Inside seems to cater for the crowd that had come to listen to the band and on the outside you can hear the music plus look at the action on Soi Selakam, always interesting.

Petchaburi – Visiting The Baan Nong Chok Community Keeping The ‘Thai Song Dum’ Culture Alive

or the past 230 years or so the Thai-Dum or Thai Song Dum people have lived in Thailand and have still managed to retain their own traditions, custom and language. These tribal villagers began their immigration into Thailand in 1779 from neighbouring Laos and Vietnam. Most can be found living in Petchaburi Province although a community can also be found in the central province of Supanburi.

The crew of Hua Hin & Cha-AM Today took a ‘road trip’ to Petchaburi to learn more about this cultural group. In Petchaburi the Thai-Dum people are well integrated into the Baan Nong Chok community. Baan Nong Chok is located close to Khao Yai, pass Petchaburi City and nearly an hour’s drive North from Cha-Am. Their presence is most apparent in two locations established so that there will always be a focus on their cultural heritage.

This place is really much more than a museum. There are artefacts, handicrafts and other information about the day to day lives of the Thai-Dum people. Photographs of the past and current ceremonial events also show glimpses of the colour and richness of this culture. However

he Chinese have given us much to celebrate, not least Chinese food, which has seemingly left its indelible mark on every continent around the globe. Perhaps it is fitting that the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, second only in importance to the Spring Festival, brings with it another Chinese delight – the moon cake. Also known as the Moon Festival or “Zhongqiu jie”, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated annually on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, this year falling on the 19th September. With the moon at its brightest, the date will be a celebration of the end of the summer harvesting season for farmers, while for others it is the opportunity for a joyous reunion of family members who gather to party and appreciate the beauty of the autumn moon. Indeed, those of Chinese origin around the globe see the occasion as a chance to gallivant, dance, feast and moon watch to their heart’s content. Legends concerning the origins of the MidAutumn Festival abound, but perhaps the most told is of the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e, and her tempestuous relationship with her consort, the Lord Archer, Hou Yi. The story goes that once, while the earth and its population were being ravaged by a severe drought caused by ten suns fiercely burning simultaneously in the sky, Hou Yi was summoned by the gods and asked to shoot down nine of the demon suns with the promise that in return he would be given the highly sought after elixir of immortality.

Task duly completed and reward in hand, the master archer returned home to share the prize with his lovely wife, Chang’e. However, she purportedly stole the potion for herself and took refuge in the moon. Hou Yi followed in hot pursuit, only to be intercepted by the Hare, who would not allow Hou Yi to pass until he promised reconciliation with his wife. As the story goes,

Most of foreign patients in the province were suffering from motorcycle-related road accidents. Some foreign patients who have health insurance are able to receive emergency treatment at private hospitals but for those who do not have are advised to seek treatment at public hospitals. On top of the unpaid bills, the Public Health Ministry had to cater a special service for foreign patients: through medical mediators, their problems at public and private hospitals would be resolved within 90 days. In 2012, 59 per cent of foreign patients filed complaints to the ministry, mostly about service quality at clinics. Yuthachai of the Association of Domestic Travel disagreed with such an initiative and said it should rather be a ‘’voluntary’’ measure, not compulsory. He expected complaints from foreign tourists if this takes effect. While saying that it is too early to estimate the negative impact on the number of tourist arrivals, he said this will surely create a barrier. Noting that Thailand would have a problem in enforcing this rule on tourists travelling without tour packages, he said the regulation is sending a negative message to the world that accidents are high in Thailand. He insisted that most foreign individual travellers can take care of themselves. For the minorities, Thailand’s third-party motor insurance scheme should be enough to foot their bills.

any of our readers ask questions about some specific legal issues that need to be considered when living in Thailand. To answer these questions our expert partners, Siam Consulting Hua Hin assists to provide the answers. This time the question is:

What sort of driving license is needed to legally drive in Thailand?

A. International Driving Licence

Any foreigner wishing to drive in Thailand must hold a valid international license issued by the authorities of a country that has signed a bilateral agreement with Thailand or acceded to an international treaty to which Thailand is a signatory. In our experience it is most likely that foreigners from the ‘usual’ countries travelling to Thailand will be included. For a full list of countries that have agreed to accept the 1949 United Nations Convention on road traffic covering acceptance of the International Driving Permit visit this link:

eople from one particular country seem to have fallen in love with Thailand to a greater extent than other nations – the Swedes. Up to 5 % of the population is visiting Thailand each year.

Today the Swedish contingent is the largest expat group in Hua Hin. Over several years the Swedish people have become increasingly well organised. The Swedish Association of Hua Hin (Svenskföreningen i Hua Hin) was founded in 2008 by the Present Chairman Gert Andersson, together with Lars Olof Fagerström and Margareta Olsson. The pediatrics clinic at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is divided into 2 sections. The first one, entitled Well Baby Clinic, is reserved for children who need pre-scheduled vaccination and the second one, Sick Baby Clinic, is exclusively for the young patient who needs medical diagnosis. This is too ensure that diseases will not be spread from one child to others.

Quite a few want to spend much more time in Thailand. Thailand has been growing as the place where Swedes buy a second home and Hua Hin has developed into a favorite place for this home!

Dr Som-art Wongkhomthong MD, the Director of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, said that a recent survey completed by the hospital showed that the obstetrics & gynecology and pediatrics units had so many patients that sometimes the area on the 1st floor of the hospital could barely accommodate other people. As a consequence, the hospital has already increased the budget to renovate its 3rd floor and turn the entire area into new obstetrics & gynecology and pediatrics clinics. Besides many qualified medical specialists and doctors with work experience in the USA, the obstetrics and gynecology clinic enjoys the latest medical equipment and technology. It is also working closely with Hua Hin Hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology doctors in transferring pregnant women having prenatal care at local clinics in Hua Hin to deliver their baby at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin.

Proof of residence (a home booklet known in Thai as the “Tabian baan”) or a residence permit issued by Immigration. 4. A medical certificate (in Thai) 6. An application for a Thailand Driving Licence is submitted to the Department of Transportation office within each Province. The applicant may also be required to pass some visual and reflex tests. The license is then awarded depending on the category of license obtained in their country of origin. The initial licence will be for a period of one year and subsequently for five years. Recent changes include a requirement to sit through a presentation (in Thai) of safety issues when driving. A practical (driving) test is not usually required for a licence of a similar class of vehicle described on your international or home country licence. A Thai Housewarming – Family, Friends & Food

K

huan Ban Mai (ขึน ้ บ้านใหม่), the blessing of a new house, literally means “going up into a new house”. The terminology refers to the fact that in the past one had to ‘go up into a house’ since most Thai houses were built on stilts to avoid the possible flooding during the summer rainy season.

or crackers). As well as these individual gifts for monks there is usually a sealed envelope which contains a donation to help support the temple. The meal must be finished by the monks before noon. As part of the ceremony, monks will sprinkle lustral or holy water on the host and guests and throughout the new house. Each member of new household will receive a string wrist-binding (white holy thread) from the monk as a blessing. The holy thread, known as Sai Seen, is also entwined around the main household Buddha image. Once blessing is complete the monks leave and the guests will have lunch together.

This occasion is regarded by Thai people as a very auspicious event. It celebrates the completion of a new home (or renovation) by bringing together friends and family and performing a Buddhist rite to encourage good fortune and prosperity for the new dwelling and its inhabitants.

A wide selection of food is prepared for the event and the choice of dishes is an important consideration. Thai curries are a popular choice and are often served with Thai vermicelli. Vermicelli is a long mung bean noodle which is a traditional symbol of longevity and is served to promote the long life of the host, long like the noodle. Serving curry with vermicelli is also common for other ceremonies such as a wedding.

Before the ceremony takes place, the host will ask for advice from monks or senior lay people to determine a suitable day for the ceremony. The auspicious day depends on the day of the week and the time of the year. For example, Saturday is considered to be an unlucky day for a blessing as Saturn is believed to be the planet of misfortune. Monks play important role in the house warming ceremony. The host will usually invite an odd number of monks such as 5, 7 or 9 monks as odd numbers are regarded as a lucky. Normally, the ceremony is held in sacred lustral water is made with four elements: Earth, Water, Fire the morning until noon and afterwards the monks gather together to and Wind. Only 43% of Thais bother to wear a crash helmet when riding on a motorcycle, despite the government’s campaign for 100% helmet compliance since 2011, according to an extensive nationwide survey by two road safety groups. Foreign riders were not quoted in the survey but unofficially foreigners are just as negligent and at risk as Thai riders.

accidents in Thailand are connected in some way with motorcycles, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). Half of these accidents result in head injuries.

Why Not? A recent survey of those not wearing a helmet came up with the most often stated reasons (excuses!) for nor wearing a helmet. Wearing a helmet is well known as one of the most effective ways to reduce severity of head injuries due to motorcycle crashes. The victims in the pillion position are less likely to use a helmet, and those who ride during the night time, regardless of the seating position, tend not to wear a helmet.”

Dessert will also be served to everyone. Desserts with significant names and meanings are chosen such as Foi Thong (sweet golden threads), Thong Yip (sweet golden flower), Thong Yod (sweet golden dew-drop-like ball) or even Kanom Chun (layered sweet meat). In Thai, “Thong” means “golden” and desserts with this is in the name signify wealth and good life for one and all. Kanom Chun dessert implies receiving respect and promotion in your working life. Khuan Ban Mai, the housewarming ceremony, is a traditional part of Thai life that has been passed from generation to generation. It is a ceremony combining Buddhist beliefs with social values and Thai customs and is a wonderful opportunity for family members to gather and enjoy the moment together increasing warmth and closeness in the family and with friends.

Thai Law Thai law is very clear on the obligation of riders and passengers to wear crash helmets. The Land and Traffic Act B.E. 2522 (1979), Section 122 stipulates: “The rider and the passenger of a motorcycle shall wear a motorcycle helmet. The provision under this Section is not for monks, novices, ascetics, persons of other religions which require a turban, or any other person under Ministerial Regulation.” The penalty is a fine not exceeding 500 baht for both riders and passengers, with the rider helmets. Brian is an avid motorcyclist with a good knowledge about bikes. responsible. Several brands of crash helmets, designed for adults and children, are sold at shopping centres, supermarkets and other retail spots, and they are quite affordable, ranging from about 149 baht up to 1,290 baht in one large international supermarket chain. In one small store the price ranged from 160 to 450 baht, and in some shops it is possible to buy a helmet for as little as 80 baht. The price of an imported BMW helmet is between 21,000 and 55,000 baht, according to an authorised dealer in Bangkok. How well made and therefore how much protection a helmet gives in an accident is very hard to determine just by looking at it.

“Cheap helmets selling for 200 or 300 baht are probably not very good quality. Whether they can protect the rider in a crash depends on the circumstances – if it’s at low speed, even a cheap helmet is better than nothing. Then again, you could have the best helmet on but if you are going fast enough there’s no guarantee that it is going to protect you. But generally cheaper helmets are made from cheaper plastic,” Brian said. “If you take an expensive helmet and drop it on the ground, it won’t bounce. The cheaper ones bounce, so they aren’t absorbing the impact.

“Generally, Thais don’t like to wear helmets, especially the young kids who maybe think it’s not Every Thai-made and imported helmet should cool. How to Eat Safely at a Street Food Stall in Thailand You Can Eat Authentic Thai Food Without Getting Sick?

any long term residents of Thailand love eating street food. It’s healthy, delicious and perfectly safe, particularly if you know where to eat it and how to order it. Tourists, on the other hand, come to Thailand and avoid eating street food, simply because they don’t trust it and think they’ll get sick. If you’re in Thailand and want to try authentic Thai food, the street food stalls are where you’ll find it and, if you follow these quick tips, you’ll get a great meal and eat food that’s completely safe. Quick Facts About Thai Street Food -

Although, obviously, it’s cooked out in the open on streets crowded with people and traffic, Thai street food is often safer and healthier than food you’ll buy in a western supermarket. The reason being, unlike in the west where the animal the meat came from was killed months ago, in Thailand the meat you eat at a street food stall was clucking, mooing or swimming only a day or two ago. Fresh meat has less bacteria; simple!

Thai food also is made with a myriad of spices. Spices have been used for centuries in countries like Thailand to kill germs and bacteria in food. The essential oils in the spices are an anti-bacterial and are miraculous against things like E. coli and Salmonella, and that’s also a big reason why it’s quite difficult to get sick from street stall food. Tips On How To Buy Street Stall Food Safely -

1. One of the first tips to follow to make sure you eat street stall food safely in Thailand is, if you’re going to sit down at the stall, only eat at stalls where a lot of people are already eating. Thais are fastidious about food and will travel miles just to eat at a particular stall. If the stall you’re interested in eating at is packed with Thais, you can guarantee the food is not only delicious, it’s shove them in a bag, choose pieces either still on the grill or ones that have just been taken off. The also safe. heat has already killed the bacteria, and eating 2. When you buy meat on sticks, sausages, squid them while hot will make sure of it. etc, choose the pieces you want yourself. Instead of letting the vendors grab a couple of pieces and 3. Order food at street stalls where it’s cooked while you watch and don’t choose foods that

have been sitting getting cold. A steaming hot bowl of noodles is a great choice, tom yam geung (spicy shrimp soup) or a fresh Thai omelette with rice, mixed and cooked while you wait. 4. If you’re wary about getting sick at a street food stall, eat more vegetable dishes and less meat dishes. Vegetables have enzymes in them that keep them fresh longer, so they’re less likely to make you ill.

5. Thais eat rice with most meals and, it’s a good thing for you to do at food stalls too. Rice is a plain, starchy food which works well to keep your stomach settled. A Thai friend told me “always eat rice with meals and your stomach will be okay”. It’s always worked for me and will probably work for you.

L

ecturers from Thammasat University have recently collected information concerning road safety problems in Hua Hin and will forward a report to government.

On 29th July 2013, Assissant Professor Dr. Pawinee Eamtrakul, an expert on city planning from Thammsat University with a team of researchers on Thailand’s traffic systems, attended a meeting with public officers and representatives of local Hua Hin communities. The meeting addressed problems about traffic and the safety of foreign visitors. Recommendations from this meeting will be sent to concerned organisations and the government who will work on solutions. Asst. Prof. Dr. Pawinee’s team was financially

Accordingly English language training for the Police is firmly on the agenda. To better understanding the profile and needs of the community, a house to house survey is being planned. The intention is to use uniformed police officers to go door to door but also to provide an English language version of the survey. We offered some assistance with this process, to advise readers about the timing and content of the survey but also if assistance is required with the English language content. More news soon. Ch-Am’s Police Superintendent wants a greater dialogue with the Cha-Am community and we hope that Cha-Am Today can be a part of achieving that aim. We hope to bring our readers more information in the future about policing services in both Cha-Am and Hua Hin.

For many years, Hua Hin and Cha-Am has been regarded as one of the best golfing regions in Thailand. As the Hua Hin & Cha-Am Golf Festival is now in full swing we thought it was the perfect time to give you some ideas about new golf fashion, accessories and golf lifestyle. We (some of us who nothing about Golf) have done some research and learnt that it can occasionally take 5 hours to play a round, so we thought if you are going to be out there for 5 hours you might as well look good playing Golf. So we decided to share tips and some delicious homemade recipes for a homemade energy drink & snack to make your day playing golf stylish as well as healthy

GOLF FASHION No matter how sweaty we can get on the golf course there is no reason not to look good. You never know who you will meet whether it be a client, friends or the love of your life.

STYLE NOTES:

Even if Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein are not sponsoring our local golf games, being in Hua Hin doesn’t mean that we can’t put a bit of style on the green.

Keep cool and opt for breathable fabrics with moisture wicking technology, like Nike Dry-Fit, Adidas’s Clima Cool and Lycra. Ladies, steal from the tennis wardrobe the famous “skort” a friendly skirt/shorts. This will assist with the crucial ranges of movements you might need during the play. Guys, avoid the old fashion chequered shorts and turn your eyes towards bright colours. Tangerine would be my favourite colour choice to match with a white polo shirt. Last but not least, the most important rule of the golf course. Avoid any fashion faux pas by ensuring your clothes are clean and neat. Polo shirts must be collared and tucked in. Shorts should be long enough for you to bend over and sit down comfortably.

After visiting a couples of golf shops in Hua Hin town, and by the way, we have plenty of choice in town, and here are some ideas we like to pass your way.

QUICK, EASY AND EFFICIENT ENERGY DRINK To make sure you stay hydrated and energetic try making your own Energy drink much more healthy than buying chemical laden drinks from the shop. And its pretty easy to. Homemade Electrolyte Drink 1/4 cup of lemon juice 1/4 cup of lime juice 1 teaspoon of salt 1 whole squeezed orange 1 litre of water Optional, If you don’t like the bitter taste of this drink you can add a tablespoon of honey.

DIY - THE 100 THB HAT ORGANISER

Let’s be honest as a golf player or a hat enthusiast must have a full collection of hats lying around in the cupboards. To stop them from taking precious place in you cupboard floor, we have come up with a solution that only cost 100 THB to create. You will need:

• shower curtain hooks, (depends

how many hats you’ve got) in transparent plastic material • One hanger (in wood from Index); or from home You just have to place the hooks on the hanger and attach the hats to the hooks. Ta da! It’s done, and for you can use this idea as well for your jewellery, scarfs , ties and headbands.

HEALTHY TRAIL MIX SNACK Trail mixes are easy to make and store well in a sealed container or ziplock bag. What you need is: peanuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, cashews, sunflower seeds and dried fruits such as apple, pineapple, mangoes, papaya, apricots, raisins or cranberries. Mix according to your taste and prepare some in advance. Remember you don’t need to be on the golf course to appreciate these two lovely healthy recipes.

YOUR TOP 5 ESSENTIALS FOR GOLF For your convenience when travelling a golf travel bag with wheels saves you energy and time. We recommend going safe on the choice of colour, since you will be using it for years. Black or White is safe, timeless and fashionable. • Golf Cooler Bag. This is perfect to carry your energy drink and snacks. Check out the recipes below. • Gloves, match the colours with your golf clothing. • Essentials include extra tees, divot tool, ball marker clip for your hat, towels, umbrella and fresh wipes to cool you down. • Eyewear, they are very necessary especially with the hot weather, you want to keep the glare of the sun out of your eyes to allow you make that awesome shot. • Always wear a hat to keep the heat off your head. • A must, sunscreen and lip balm to hydrate yours lips from the sun and avoid looking like a roasted chicken.

Khun Jackie - The Elephant Man

A

mnuay Singkhon is a Thai elephant Mahout working at the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation. Traditionally a Mahout starts as a boy in the ‘family profession’ when he is assigned an elephant early in its life and is responsible for every aspect of the elephant’s training and welfare. They remain bonded to each other throughout their lives. These days the arrangements are rather more flexible however the bond between mahout and elephant remains.

Khun Jackie, as he is more usually known, is 35 years old and he had been working full time as a Mahout for the past 9 years. He previously was more part time but he has been involved in this line of profession since he was 15 year old. He now lives at the Foundation in Hua Hin and his wife and child live in Aumpur Kaeng Krachan, Petchaburi Province. His wife originally come from comes from Burriram. For a while his nightly female sleeping companion was Songkran, his elephant which would cry if left alone, although now a little more independent. Being a Mahout is a seven day a week 24 hour responsibility which leaves little private time because of this devotion. This means awaking with the elephants, usually at dawn, and spending all his day in training, feeding, washing and generally

keeping his elephant happy. Khun Jackie rejects any suggestions of corporal punishment, just gentle persuasion with a sense of humour. No concept of holidays or free time is within Khun Jackie’s grasp and really the only thing he can manage outside this profession is to arrange time with his family. Khun Sam says that he loves being the Mahout for Songkran, his favourite elephant. He describes Songkran as cute and innocent She is also naughty in a clever way. He loves Songkran in the same way he loves his own family. He refers to this one ton family member as ‘Nong’ or sister. It’s hard to imagine a Western equivalent to this professional devotion. Perhaps think about the life of a Mahout next time you have a ‘pet problem’!

Hua Hin Sport Day 2013

H

ua Hin Municipality is hosting the Hua Hin Sports Day 2013 from 2nd to 7th September 2013, featuring various kinds of sport, including basketball, takraw, badminton, pétanque, aerobic dance, football and traditional Thai games. This will be held at a variety of venues in Hua Hin such as the Hua Hin Municipal School, Phon Kingphet Memorial Park, Queen Sirikit’s Memorial Park and Hua Hin School. According to the Hua Hin Mayor Mr. Nopporn Witthikul, this event aims to boost unity within 36 communities in Hua Hin and encourage participants, especially youths, to take more exercise. The participating communities will be represented by different colors: blue, orange, green, pink and navy blue. For further information on Hua Hin Sport Day 2013, please contact the Education Division or the Social Welfare Division of Hua Hin Municipality at tel. 032 511 047 ext. 402 or 221.

According to a report by Knight Frank property consultancy, there were 22,619 units on the market in the area during the first half of this year, of which around 11,395 units were sold. The purchase rate for new condominiums stood at 49% in 2012, rising to 52% in the first half of this year, leaving around 10,639 condominium units still on the market. Demand was from Thai medium-income earners, primarily from Bangkok, who opted to buy compact inland units, from 30 to 35 square metres, at prices less than 2 million baht per unit. The report argues that Hua Hin is “gearing up for growth”, due to the government’s plan to promote Hua Hin and Cha-am as a seaside resort destinations for foreigners, and infrastructure development plans for a high-speed train link and special highway, which will make it easier to travel between Bangkok and Hua Hin. But it urges developers to exercise caution before considering new condominium projects, given that more than 10,000 units remain for sale. “The Hua Hin residential market is

overwhelmingly driven by Thai purchasers who are looking for a second home or a holiday property near Bangkok; this group comprises nearly 75% of the total purchasers,” the report said. “Other buyer groups are expatriates and foreign retirees from Europe.” It adds that Hua Hin’s seaside destination has recently drawn interest from Chinese buyers who are seeking second residential properties in Asia, “due to a joint venture between Thai investors and Chinese developers in the works for the Hua Hin market this year”.

HUA HIN CITY FOOTBALL CLUB

W

Thailand Football – Get Involved!

atching football in Thailand is easy. If you have the necessary TV channels or visit a bar you can have live access to all the main events including the English Premier League and a variety of Europe’s top competitions. However remember this is only watching TV, not the full match experience and the atmosphere that only being at the game can provide. I often think it’s a little sad that many Thai people seem to care more about the players and teams overseas than their own teams although it always hard to ignore the star qualities of the Rooney’s, Ronaldo’s, Man U’s and Liverpool’s. But what about the local football game?

On 3rd August Hua Hin City played Thonburi (Bangkok BG) at the current local venue at the Thanarat Army grounds. The largely Thai supporters enthusiastically supported their team with the Club mascot, banners, flags, fancy dress and drums. In many other locations in Thailand this would also an opportunity for the expat population of football supporters to turn out and join in the carnival atmosphere but that was not evident here; only a handful of ‘falang’ in the crowded stands. We noticed one couple of foreigners moving to the spectator seating from the player’s race. However they explained that they were not really VIPs, they just got lost on the way in! Perhaps a little strange as the security for the game was being provided from the Military Police from the local Army base. As for the game, plenty of excitement and a good result for the locals:

Mangos, Water and a Magic Tree Doctor

W

ater can be a scarce commodity in many parts of the world. Although we have plenty of rain in Thailand, there are times when the fields are bone dry. Addressing that problem has been a centuries old task, but perhaps there is a real environmentally friendly answer. Education is considered the key to improved understanding of environmental issues, and that was the idea behind a new book, The Magic Tree Doctor, which is to be given a launch in September. Written by established author, Neil Ray, the book is illustrated by children from the British Education Children’s Centre in Hua Hin. The story is set in a mango orchard in the hills around the city, so it seemed right to include the local community.

Neil said the ideas came thick and fast and soon developed into a story where the trees chat amongst themselves, about water, being thirsty and an odd man who comes along to help – that’s The Magic tree Doctor! The launch will take place in Hua Hin on 7 September when the talented children from the BECC will receive the thanks of sponsors such as Innovative Eco Management (IEM), Chang Garden Resort, Chiang Rai, and The Royal Hua Hin Rotary Club. th

inar Bråthe officially took over the KVIK showrooms in Hua Hin on 1st August 2013. This affable Norwegian now manages five showroom staff as well as an installation crew at the Danish design kitchen business. Kvik celebrated its official opening of our new showroom in Hua Hin on Wednesday 16th of February 2011. Initially the showroom operated under the stewardship of the Kvik CEO Carsten Anderson as part of the Company’s expansion into Thailand. Einar met Carsten some three years ago. When the opportunity surfaced to become a real part of this business, it seemed like a perfect match. Einar’s background is primarily in real estate, marketing , home building and renovation. He also has qualifications in Business Administration. As a major bonus, Einar has a keen personal interest in cooking, so he really feels at home in a showroom demonstrating all the latest in kitchen design. All the ingredients for success and customer confidence are there. He is able to offer insights into how a Kvik kitchen can make a big difference to any home, condo or apartment. He can show his customers how to get the most of a new culinary experience in a very practical ‘hands on’ way.

“Thainess,” one of the primary themes of future marketing campaigns, as a traditional Thai wedding ceremony does allow participants to enjoy Thai customs in a unique setting.

Einar has been in Hua Hin for the past four years and in Thailand for over nine years. He has a Thai wife who operates an advertising agency and a 2 and a half year old son. Apart from Norwegian, Einar speaks a variety of other Scandinavian languages with a smattering of German and French. He also recognises that the future of the business will not only include expat customers but also Thai people who are increasingly looking for a European style kitchen. His Thai staff understands how traditional Thai cooking can be enhanced with the range of European appliances and design.

Kvik’s business is based on strong partnerships with franchisees. We met Einar and Carsten Anderson at the Kvik showroom on the day of the handover to the new franchisee. IN THE NAVY!

Have you ever wondered about the Naval Ships that are a feature of the Hua Hin Seascape?

ust wander along a Hua Hin central beach any day (or night) and glance out to sea. The chances are you will see four or five ships just off the coast with the Royal Thailand Navy offering a protective ’umbrella ‘over our community. In part about ensuring the safety of the Klai Kangwon Palace and any residents that may be spending time there but also adding to the safety that all Hua Hin Residents and visitors enjoy.

We were told of a training mission that involved a local fishing boat. The fishing boat and crew were accompanied by a navy person travelling ‘incognito’. The task was to cross into the ‘no-go’ zone and test the reaction of an intercepting naval ship. Apart from the ‘top brass’ and the sailor on board the fishing boat, this was not revealed to others as a training exercise. When the fishing boat was intercepted, a deliberate stream of verbal abuse was orchestrated by the ‘phony’ fisherman looking to provoke a reaction from the crew of the ship. The Rear Admiral told us about a video he reviewed which, apart from providing him with a good laugh at the antics of the provocateur, was a source of great pride due to the patient insistence and good natured reactions of the ship’s crew. A stranger tale was about a jet ski rider who, when questioned about the reasons for being in the exclusion zone, was a little embarrassed to admit that he had become disorientated during a jet ski event near Pattaya. of Thailand Tattoos – Sak Yant

T

he traditional tattoo of Thailand is called “Sak Yant”. These tattoos are associated with both Buddhist and animist beliefs and were popular in Thailand before the arrival of Buddhism. Sak Yant dates back to Angkor times 3,000 years ago and the art is greatly influenced by Khmer culture. The specific script used for yantra tattoos is a mixture of ancient Khmer script or Khom and the original Buddhist Pali script. Every year, hundreds of foreigners in search of original and magical tattoos come to Thailand to have a Sak Yant.

Tattooing with bamboo has long been practised in Buddhist temples where monks would receive religious texts tattooed by grand master monks. Throughout Thai history, soldiers would visit temples to be tattooed by monks and receive spells for protection, strength and invisibility. Thailand legend has it that the country has never been occupied as Thai soldiers are warrior ghosts who cannot be seen or killed by the enemy due to their protective tattoos. The belief is not only that the designs are potent, but also the chanting of prayers that accompany it. The implement used for the tattoo is nearly a metre long and as the monks do their work, the chanting begins until the tattoo is finished. One hand directs the needle, cradling the tip as one would a pool cue, while the other hand drives the needle in and out of the skin at around two to three times per second. The series of dots in the skin connect to resemble a tapestry. Bamboo tattooing is extremely painful but considered worthwhile to make the bearer invincible. Another technique involves the tattooist rubbing ink into the wound after the needle has penetrated the skin, while at the same time a prayer is said to impregnate the charm with its spiritual power. Thai monks have to undergo months of training to find the mystical place within themself a place where they won’t be distracted. Only when they have found this place within can they orchestrate their mind, body and heart in the necessary performance of tattooing. Thai traditionalists warn tattoo enthusiasts that ordinary ‘decorative’ tattoos have no power to protect or bless them. In the traditionalist’s eyes they are executed using modern electric machines in the hands of tattooists with little true feeling. Consequently the tattoos lack authority and integrity and are perceived to lack magic. Such tattoos would have little power to act as a protective amulet or talisman or to bring good fortune to the wearer. Quite often, the tattoo will not be recognisable as it will be a Thai script reproducing prayers and sometimes it will be a ‘yantra,’ a pattern which is less graphic than an animal and composed merely of dots. Each component of each yantra, right down to a single dot, has specific and significant meaning. The traditional Buddhist tattoo is of a geometric design based on images of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, the Lotus or some other type of Buddhist symbol that is said to attract luck, wealth and blessings as well as providing insurance against evil spirits.

P

Another Thai tattoo that performs more or less the same functions is a Hindu Sanskrit tattoo that is based on the fearsome Hindu gods and deities such as the four faced Buddha, the Holy Eagle, the Heavenly Dog, Hanuman the Monkey God, and a Wealth Deity which make the evils spirits retreat. Many tattoos are of animals, the most popular being the tiger. The tattoo of a tiger represents the tigers’ spirit and the lower back is a favoured location as the tiger spirit will be in control of your life. Angelina Jolie submitted to the classical tiger treatment at the hands of venerated tattoo master, Ajarn Noo Kanphai in 2004. A special Thai tattoo to improve your interpersonal and relationship skills called the Golden-Tongued Bird ‘Sha Li Ka’, is to improve your confidence and speaking skills, and it must work because it is seriously painful as it is applied to the tongue. The tattoo inked on the top of the head is intended to ‘flood your head with blessings to protect your soul’. This is called the ‘Yuan Shen Guan Ding’ tattoo. It is said that the soul resides up there, right alongside one’s store of good luck, and also any potential for success in business and relationships. The placement of the tattoo on the body has great significance in Thai tattooing, the closer a tattoo is to the head, where the soul is thought to reside the greater the power of the tattoo. For attracting special wealth, there are hand tattoos. Pieces of 24K gold flake inscribed with the wearer’s personal data are hand-pricked into the palm. Could his be the origin of the ‘golden handshake’? An invisible Tattoo? Thai tattooing has been adapted to modern times with typical Thai finesse. For those who worry that their tattoos may not be well-received in an office, tattoos can be done not with the usual tattoo inks but with sesame oil. The tattooing implements, the designs and the mantras are all the same except that the result is an invisible tattoo, with none of the visible stigma of a tattoo, but with all its magical powers to protect as an amulet and talisman. THE BARAI–LIKE SPENDING TIME ON A FLYING CARPET

T

he wonderful and efficient marketing people at Hyatt not to try to describe how it impacts on you visually Regency invited me and the newspaper team to review the although I would need a thesis length story to do it justice. Spa at the beautiful The Barai.

I am not even going to attempt to describe the impressive size of this place or all the details that result in its appearance, but I do have to say this place is amazingly beautiful. It has been built to cater to all your 5 senses;-Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch. The goal of the journey is to bring peace and tranquility to the guest of the Barai. Designed by the famous Thai architect, Lek Bunnag and named after large man-made water reservoirs (the Barays), somebody has put a lot of thought into the design and how this place would be experienced. It is hard to separate the design, service and treatment; they go hand in hand. However it would be a disservice

Entering the Barai starts with very long entrance hallway that is dark with light trickling in, tricking your mind to take slow steps and to generally slow down. The entrance leads to an empty Marrocen style (in my mind) courtyard with earth red walls and a humongous water feature with the sky as the ceiling. You can’t get any more WOW than that, trust me. From the courtyard hidden gateways lead you to sand covered passage ways leading to the treatment areas and changing rooms. Even the passageways are stunning, it’s just not fair! The treatment rooms are equally well thought out with ceiling portholes in star shapes, beautiful personal shower and a relaxing are courtyard (again open to the elements). I am not ashamed to admit that I showered in the open area in my own fantasy courtyard completely buck naked because I could and I would do it again in a heartbeat (please do not try imagine this!). On top of this, located in the Tranquility Court of the Spa there is a private swimming pool with a view of the sea and the changing rooms. I loved it that at The Barai you may come in hours early for your treatment to enjoy their changing rooms (lovelyyy…). The recreation area boasts a Sauna, Steam Room and Relaxation room. The Sauna and Steam room did it for me, releasing any toxins and leaving you as fresh as the day you were born. They could have sent me off packing at this point and I would have been really happy. All the above and I haven’t even mentioned the treatment yet. I had a Hyatt signature mini facial and body treatment by JUNE JACOBS. June Jacobs Spa Collection has specially designed facials and body treatments exclusively for Hyatt spas. The treatment conditions and hydrates the body and counteracts the signs of aging. The treatment starts with an exfoliation, a Papaya Enzyme massage, a wrap, followed by a refreshing Lemon Sugar Body Polish and finished off with an age-defying body emulsion; leaving your body soft as silk and well moisturised.

The treatment left my skin on face and my body refreshed, looking brand new and seriously hydrated. June Jacobs products are really gentle and great for the skin. Once I finished my treatment I got a sneak peak at The Barai Suites (one of eight) adjacent to the Barai. They are designed for an exclusive stay and a private spa indulgence. The rooms are stunning and located right by the sea and have the most amazing bathrooms I have seen. Then the marketing girls took me for a quick high tea at McFarland House. The McFarland house was built in 19th century, has been restored and transformed into an elegant and breezy casual bar and dining area, offering setting with 180 degree views of the Gulf of Thailand. How did the High tea go? I ate everything I could lay my hands on as usual including other people’s food. The location is beautiful and located as close to the ocean you can be without getting wet. And the food was yum.

Do note that The Barai has recently introduced complimentary round trip transfers, exclusively offered to THE BARAI Spa guests The entire treatment was gentle and relaxing and I snoozed residing within the Hua Hin area. through it. Whilst the body treatment was happening a mini facial was given, again with June Jacobs products. My therapist So to wrap up this Spa review (heavy on the architecture I know) was discreet (even while I was I was on the loose, naked in The Barai,… a definite thumbs up, treatment –Thumbs up, staffthe courtyard), courteous and very knowledgeable about the Thumbs up and of course highly recommended! treatment. Did I mention that I choose my own music for the The Barai treatment? I went for the latest chill-out music but there is much Hyatt Regency Hua Hin to choose from. Tel: 03 252 1234
