8 Fashion & life style It’s Showtime - Lingerie Affair With Victoria Secret Show Unless you were in hiding, you must know that last month, not only it was the month of Christmas but it was also the month of the most popular lingerie catwalk for the past 19 years, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. It place in London this time. There was a lot of winking, kisses blown at the camera, and amazing lingerie on show. Also famous singers Taylor Swift in sexy black lace, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande were entertaining during show.

The last theme - The “Angel Ball” was a celebration of dramatic but still sexy elegant black gowns, inspired from black and white tuxedo. Facts you didn’t know: Before Victoria’s Secret, there were granny panties at your local department store. That’s exactly why Roy Raymond founded the store in Northern California in 1977. It grew to be the largest American retailer of lingerie

and moved into apparel, beauty products and up to now the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show once a year since 1995. The first show, in 1995, was held by brunette beauty Stephanie Seymour and was not televised but took place at the tony Plaza Hotel in New York City. 10 Mangove The Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Center

In an ongoing commitment to environmental preservation and education in the local community, Chiva-Som International Health Resorts and the Preserve Hua Hin Group under Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn are developing the Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation & Science Education Center in the last remaining urban mangrove in the Hua Hin. Entitled MEPSEC Hua Hin, the project is a collaboration of scientists, academics and students of Silpakorn University and the local inhabitants. The mission is multi-dimensional. Firstly, to take a precautionary approach to sustainable mangrove ecosystem management and create an urban biosphere reserve and secondly, to support environmental preservation initiatives and to educate and raise awareness on natural resource conservation, climate change and humanity’s impact on the environment to students as well as the general public. Lastly, to inspire and motivate today’s youth to develop an interest in studying sciences for a sustainable future. Since 2008, Preserve Hua Hin and ChivaSom have been organising Mangrove Ecosystem Study Camps to help local students gain first-hand knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem and other

environmental issues including climate change and environmental degradation caused by increased human activity and commercial development. Recognized as Junior Ambassadors, the students learn about the symbiotic relationship between plants, animals and water to help them understand both the stability and fragility

of the ecosystem, and develop respect for nature. They have been active in the reforestation projects and mangrove rubbish clean-ups as well. Chiva-Som and Preserve Hua Hin have been leading the reforestation project at the Khao Krai Lart mangrove since 2007 and over 1,000 seedlings have been planted so far. Research and planning are underway to restore another previously deforested area to a healthy reconstructed wetland with the planting of 2,500 seedlings native to the region. MEPSEC is located on land owned by the Buddhist temple Wat Khao Klai Lart and permission has been given to preserve and protect the mangrove ecosystem. With financial support from Chiva-Som, Silpakorn University has conducted extensive scientific research at the mangrove over the last year to determine its current condition. To be opened to the public in 2015 as the first ecotourism science center in Hua Hin, the state of the art education center is to be a showcase of sustainability demonstrating low environmental impact construction with a 1,000-metre elevated interpretive boardwalk throughout the mangrove.

12 GOLF Asian and European Golf Stars to Vie for ‘Pride of Thailand’ Trophy The US$2million Thailand Classic is set to welcome the best players from the Asian Tour and European Tour when it gets underway at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin from February 12-15. It will be the first time in eight years that the European Tour has co-sanctioned an event in Thailand with the Asian Tour. A special “Pride of Thailand’’ trophy has been designed for the Classic. The beautiful trophy, featuring unique Thai art, is a reflection of the effort which has gone into establishing this tournament. It signifies the pride of the Thai people in hosting the prestigious event. The trophy was designed by Thailand’s acclaimed Chang Sip Mu craftsmen and is a combination of traditional Thai craft and contemporary design. The US$2 million prize money is a record for a golf event in Thailand. The tournament, which is also part of the prestigious Race to Dubai series, is expected to attract a strong field including many of Europe’s successful Ryder Cup squad which comprehensively

defeated the United States last year. Ben Cowen, European Tour’s Deputy Director of International Policy said “we are delighted to be returning to Thailand for the Thailand Classic after eight years. It is an honour to have one of our 47 European Tour events held in Thailand, which is also a part of the exciting Race to Dubai series.” Cowen said he was convinced the tournament would be a great success. “I am sure the European golfing stars will thrill the local golf fans. At the same time the golfers will enjoy the famous Thai hospitality and the wonderful attractions Thailand has to offer.” Asian Tour’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Kerr was enthusiastic about having the new tournament on the Tour calendar. “The Asian Tour is honoured to celebrate the staging of the inaugural Thailand Classic,” he said. “It is not only the richest golf tournament in the Kingdom but also Thailand’s only co-sanctioned tournament by the Asian Tour and European Tour.’’

Thailand Golf Championship 2014

He also had high praise for the golf course. “The Black Mountain Golf Club is a wonderful host venue, having won numerous accolades. I applaud the efforts of all of our partners including event promoter MUSE Group for making this event possible.”

The Black Mountain course, which has already hosted three Asian Tour events since it opened in 2007, is regarded as one of the best in the region and has won high praise from leading golfers. It has also been named best golf course in Thailand for the past three years.

vs ‘Thailand’? In the end the locals (‘Thailand’) prevailed, however the Steinkjen team members were awarded Cha-Am Golf Club souvenirs to take home. The lowest putts competition was also won by two Cha-Am Golf Club Members; perhaps putting on Thailand greens was a significant winning edge.

Steinkjen Golf Klubb from Norway, were recent visitors to Cha-Am playing during a short stay on a variety of local courses, but also issuing a challenge to the resident golfers of Cha-Am.

Lee Westwood, The 41-year-old Englishman began the day in third, two shots behind leader Marcus Fraser, but set the clubhouse target with seven birdies in a five-under-par 67 to win by a single stroke.. “There’s nothing like finishing a year strongly to give you a bit of momentum for the next year,” said Westwood, who recovered from two opening dropped shots at the Amata Spring Country Club. “It’s a fantastic place to come and play golf,” he said. Quartet Qualify For The Open at St Andrews 2015 Marcus Fraser narrowly missed out on claiming his first win since 2010, but his disappointment was largely offset by the knowledge that he had qualified for next British Open at St Andrews. The Australian, who finished tied second alongside Martin Kaymer, a shot behind winner Lee Westwood, earned one of four places in the game’s oldest Major that were up for grabs at the 2014 Thailand Golf Championship, which forms part of the Open Qualifying Series. “That’s why I came up here – to try and get one of those sports at The Open at St Andrews next year, so it’s great, I’m excited,” said Fraser, who bogeyed Amata Spring Country Club’s demanding 18th hole to miss the opportunity of forcing a play-off with Englishman Westwood. HUA HIN TODAY, January 2015

Although mostly Members of the ChaAm Golf Club, the ‘Thailand’ team was a motley group of mixed nationality golfers with expats from England, Northern Ireland, Australia and also Norway taking up the challenge. The agreed format was 18 holes of stroke play with the winners determined by the lowest average Net score of the team Members. Fraser’s fellow countryman Scott Hend (fifth), India’s Anirban Lahiri and Jonathan Moore of the United States (tied sixth) were the other non-exempt players to earn their places in the field at the Home of Golf in 2015. Long-hitting Hend was equally effusive about winning his ticket to Scotland. “I’m very excited. I was thinking more about the four spots in The Open [than winning the tournament]. It created a bit more pressure because I really wanted desperately to play in another Open. It’s awesome,” said Hend. The visitors nominated Sea Pine (Suanson) as their course of choice. This was perhaps an attempt to negate the ‘local advantage’, but also as the remaining regional course to be played on their tour. This was an inspired choice, with the course in great condition and a steady cooling breeze from the ocean adding another dimension to the skills required.

The 19th hole entertainment was provided by a Stenkjen Member and guitarist\singer Karsten, who strangely enough seemed to favour Irish songs. This was a most enjoyable day of golfing camaraderie which Steinkjen President Erik Stene agreed, a great way to meet and greet the locals. This was the second of two challenges accepted (and won!) by the Cha-Am Golf Club recently. President Paul Graff said that the Club is always open to more challenges. Contact can be made, including membership enquiries, to www. chaamgolfclub.com.

14 GOLF Banyan Award Winners; Two Unheralded Golfing Professionals We had two reasons for a recent visit to Banyan Golf Course. First readers may recall the December 2014 edition which highlighted the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators Awards, featuring Hua Hin Golf Courses Banyan and Black Mountain. The headline said: ‘Asia Pacific Golf Summit - Black Mountain & Banyan Share the Honours’ Somewhere between editing and printing a ‘gremlin’ in the system meant that three award winners ‘shifted’ from the Banyan list to Black Mountain, an embarrassing error! Our first ‘mission’?, to offer our apologies to General Manage Stacy Walton and Director of Golf Operations of the Year, Stuart Daly. Secondly we wanted to talk with the two less heralded award winners, Best Club Caddie of the Year, Kannika (Khun Ked) Namthong and Best Golf Course Superintendent of the Year, Minachai (Khun Min) Srichanya. And to these two; khor thort maak maak (sorry very much) for our error. Our thanks for their time and openness. Our questions to Khun Ked: Can you tell us about your caddie career, how did it get started? “My first round as a caddie was when I was still at school and 12 years of age, so only on weekends. My Auntie introduced me to Royal Hua Hin Golf Course. I was very small and needed to carry the golf bag with no trolleys then. It was hard to convince them that I could do the job. That was 19 years ago and I’ve been caddying ever since.” What do you enjoy the most about being a caddie? “It really makes me happy everyday. I enjoy the exercise, the scenery, (especially mountains) and meeting new people.” Who are your favourite golfers? “I don’t really have favourites. I caddie regularly for 4 or 5 golfers and I like golfers who can joke and smile. Australian golfers are often good sports and are friendly.” What is the biggest tip you have ever had? “A Chinese golfer once tipped my 3,000 THB.”

HUA HIN TODAY, January 2015

What is your favourite Banyan hole? “Hole 15. It has great views of the off shore Islands.” How often do you work and what do you like to do when you are away from the golf course? “I often work 7 days a week, but not always in the low season. When I have time off I like to go shopping at Market Village. I may also be able to visit home in Ratchaburi sometimes in the low season.” What are your thoughts about winning the Best Caddie Award? “First the other caddies supported me and helped me win the Award. They are very pleased for me; that is important. Second, it has been a very exciting time, both at the Awards Ceremony and since then. The only problem is that when I am excited I forget my English, not so good. I also didn’t smile in the award photo!” Our impressions: Banyan and the Asia Pacific’s Caddie of the Year really typify why caddies in Thailand are so popular. No criticisms of golfers or anything about her role. Just eager to please and provide the best of service with immaculate grooming and the best of advice. The last question …..... Can you be my caddie next time at Banyan? Yes please book my number! Sorry readers; that’s my secret! Our questions to Khun Min: What are the main responsibilities in your position as Golf Course Superintendent? “Three main areas; first the maintenance and development budget, second managing the staff on course and then maintaining the equipment. I always need to think about the enjoyment and safety of golfers as a priority. Many golfers never see the work going on, for example we usually start the day at 4.00 AM under lights. We manage an annual schedule of work and my job is to keep that on track.” How do you keep up with changes or developments in the golfing industry? “One way is through the Thailand Golf Superintendents Association. There is an

annual conference with expert speakers and also regular seminars to attend through the year. Second we have visiting international consultants to discuss issues we may have and make suggestions.” Can you tell us what is the most common issue or even complaint you receive from golfers? “Low handicap golfers, professionals and tournament organisers want the stimp meter to show a speed of around 9.5 to 9.8; that’s usually too fast for the higher handicap players who then may not be happy. We aim for around 10.2 to 10.5 with adjustments to that according to the needs of visiting players but it’s hard to please everyone. If golfers are new to the Course they may ask about the green speeds from the caddie.” What is your favourite Banyan hole? “Hole 5. It may look straight forward but it’s very challenging and deceptive.” What are your thoughts about winning the Best Golf Course Superintendents Award? “I was concerned that winning the award could result in me becoming complacent. I want to show what I can everyday with our

golfers really enjoying the Banyan golfing experience, that’s more important to me.” Our impressions: The consummate unsung golfing industry professional. Khun Min (or ‘Minnie’ to his friends, including the caddies) knows the devil is in the detail from landscaping (how do the colours of the plants off the fairway appear against the fairway green?), taking care of staff welfare and concerns about the budget always in mind. A gentleman off the green and we are confident on course. He’s an 8 handicap player!

16 Wellness Top 10 Liver Questions You Should Ask

Our bodies are constantly waging battle to detoxify themselves of foreign entities that enter the system through exposure to pollution, chemicals in processed food, as well as through pathogens and by-products of metabolism. The main organ involved in the breakdown of toxins is the liver. Let’s look at 10 of the most important questions about the liver, and how they address how harmful a diseased liver is to the body, how a healthy liver can make you a healthier person and what you will experience – and what you should do – during a liver detox. 1. What does the liver do? The liver carries out more than 500 functions, but the following are five of the most important. Detoxification: The liver detoxifies the blood of metabolic waste products like ammonia, drugs, alcohol, chemicals and matter such as dead cells and microorganisms. Digestion aid: The liver secretes bile that aids in the digestion of food. Metabolism: The liver metabolizes major carbohydrates, proteins and fats. For example, it helps control blood-sugar levels by converting excess glucose in the bloodstream to glycogen – stored energy – and back for use when needed. Vitamin and mineral storage: The liver provides storage for numerous vitamins and minerals like A, D, E, K, B12, folate, iron, potassium, copper and zinc. Hormone breakdown: The liver can break down testosterone and insulin. 2. What causes liver disease? The liver can be damaged in a variety of ways. One of them is through inflammation, which is also known as hepatitis. Hepatitis results from damage to the liver by sugar, pathogens, trans fats, alcohol consumption, use of drugs and ingestion of chemicals. The liver can also be damaged through lack of either bile or blood flow. Bile and blood flow can both be obstructed by gall stones, which can cause scarring and a build-up of toxins in the bloodstream. The liver can also incur damage as a result of obesity and having too much iron in the blood.

3. What are the symptoms of liver disease? The main symptoms of liver disease are jaundice – yellow discoloration of the skin – weakness and fatigue, loss of appetite leading to weight loss, nausea and vomiting, stool discoloration and a distended abdomen. 4. How can a liver detox help me lose weight? A well-functioning liver boosts metabolism, and better metabolism means less food will be stored as fat and more fat will be burned as energy. Also, by reducing toxins in the body, you reduce inflammation and “false fat” or excess water weight will disappear. 5. What other benefits come from a clean liver? Having a cleaner liver will result in better digestion. With better digestion comes better health, as you will not be “what you eat” but “what you assimilate”. Your body will also be better prepared to break down and remove potentially harmful toxins from the body. Lastly, you will have clearer skin as a result of a healthy, happy liver. 6. How will I feel during a liver detox? Just a fair warning: as the body detoxifies you could experience a “healing crisis”, which can result in flu-like symptoms such as headaches, joint and muscle pain, body aches, sore throat, sweating, chills and nausea. These generally last a few days at the most. They can be reduced by drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest. Also, light exercise such as yoga, stretching and walking, as well as deep breathing, can help lessen the pain of uncomfortable side effects. As a precaution, be careful to limit the intake of detox herbs and supplements.

coconut oil, olives, olive oil, hemp, soaked nuts and sprouted seeds. Be sure to choose organic, low-fructose fruits like berries and kiwi fruit, and include some whole, non-gluten grains like brown rice and quinoa. 8. What should I avoid during a liver detox? Take care to avoid processed foods, trans fats, sugar, alcohol, recreational drugs, red meat and processed flour products like bread and pasta. 9. What herbs and supplements help the detox? Herbs such as milk thistle, artichoke, dandelion and burdock, and supplements of antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, B vitamins and MSM will help support the body during a liver detox.

7. What should I eat during a liver detox?

10. How often should/can you do a liver detox?

An ideal diet would feature local and organic vegetables at the top of the list, including juices. Raw or lightly steamed vegetables should be the basis of a liver-detox diet. You can also include some free-range meats like fish, chicken and eggs. Add some good fats as well, such as avocados,

Our livers are under constant attack from toxins, you should do your best to eat clean regularly and take care to keep toxins at a minimum. Perhaps a few times a year, it would be smart to elect a stricter liver detox regiment, and throw in some supplements.

Your Massage Matters

Massage options come in all shapes and sizes……. perhaps the same as the customers! However there are two real choices when it comes to style and budget. On one hand many of the upmarket resorts offer massage and spa experiences that can be exotic and luxurious; but there is a price to be paid. On the other hand there are literally 100’s of massage shops on the streets around town. The problem is which ones are ‘real’ and which ones are offering something other than treatment for your stress or discomfort? Our mission was to find a compromise; no luxury required, but a great massage at a bargain price, nothing more or less. After asking those ‘in the know’, our test run was at Pink Lotus Massage on Naebkhehat Road Hua Hin. The outside appearance is attractive, easily visible AND pink. Inside the reception area is modern and appealing, there are even elephant shaped folded towels on display. The owner Khun Tim can discuss your needs in English so you feel relaxed and confident immediately. A cleansing footbath happens through the first doorway away from other customers, not just a plastic tub on the floor. The massage area is one floor above; private, comfortable and spacious. Attention to detail is apparent, not pretentious but pleasant and relaxing. My needs were simple, get rid of this aching hip please! My masseur, Khun Pin, was confident that wouldn’t be a problem.

Thai or oil? ……. I didn’t really care as long as the problem was solved; up to you. My hour massage was a cross between the two styles; some massage oils but really a more traditional approach, firm and strong. This was the best of both worlds. The source of my discomfort was quickly discovered and became the focus of the attention. An hour later I was walking pain-free again. Khun Pin tactfully mentioned that although she could help me today, exercise was needed and she didn’t mean just walking around the golf course. OK, I got it! Pink Lotus Massage is our pick if you are looking for a massage with results but without fuss or suspicion and at very wallet-friendly prices. You’ll have nothing to lose except that niggling ache or pain. The exercise is up to you! Where: Naebkhehat Road between Sois 55 and 57, east of Petchkasem Road. Open: 10 am to 9 pm everyday. Phone: 032 512 116 Early Bird Special! Between 10 am and 2 pm the usual Thai massage cost for one hour is reduced from 250 THB to 200 THB; that’s great value.

18 People in bussiness Your Country’s National Day If you are not Thai then you will probably want to acknowledge your home country’s National Day in one way or another. Chances are that there will be a restaurant featuring the cuisine and traditional activities familiar to you. Even if you have real connection to the country in question it’s worth dropping by and saying hullo. Chances are you will be even more welcome than usual and win some points by mentioning their celebrations. In January the two most prominent National Days happen on the same date – 26th January for India and Australia. Apart from this date, both countries also share a national sporting passion for one sport, cricket. The Indian Cricket Team is currently in Australia for a Test Series (that’s the top level and most traditional form of the game) although that will be all over by 10th January. INDIA

January 26th is known as India Republic Day, honouring the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. On this day, celebrations are also held in all the state capitals, with the state governors reviewing a military parade and taking the salute of the troops. Everywhere are street vendors with all kinds of tasty food, like crispy fried pappadums, sweet pickles, vegetables spiced with curry and peppers and thick sweet puddings. For the kids, there are trinkets, balloons and sticky sweets. It’s all wonderfully, gloriously noisy and colourful. This year Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited U.S. President Barack Obama to be the chief guest at the Jan. 26 traditional Republic Day parade in New Delhi. AUSTRALIA

The nation becomes even more patriotic than usual and celebrates in a big way, with events held in just about every community to commemorate the arrival of the first fleet on Australian soil in 1788. Here’s what the locals are likely to get up to: Enjoy a BBQ The perfect and traditional way to celebrate Australia day is with a barbeque. They Invite family, friends and neighbours around for a sausage sizzle. It doesn’t get much better than a relaxed BBQ in the backyard to celebrate a stinking hot Australia Day. Then it’s likely to be beach cricket for a truly Aussie day at the beach. Aussie food - Traditional Australian foods may be vegemite sandwiches, meat pies and sausage rolls to lamingtons and pavlova. ‘1,000 Sook’; 1,000 Thai Pleasures ‘Amusement Alley’ stretches some 10 kilometres from the junction of the bypass road just north of Cha-Am along the main highway to Bangkok. We’ve already reported on Santorini, The Swiss Sheep Farm and Camel Republic. There are more entertainment and shopping venues coming, including a shopping complex under construction with the ‘golden arches’ of McDonalds already open. And let’s not forget the factory outlets for designer label clothing. Travellers heading south from Bangkok have many tempting reasons to stop en route.

Our latest visit was to check out ‘1,000 Sook’; what’s that? This is also called ‘1,000 Happiness Food and Farm’; perhaps a better translation would be 1,000 Pleasures. 1,000 Sook is a combination of an urban farm, a souvenir and Thai delicacies outlet and a steak (and more) restaurant. If you look around the shopping areas first, chances are you’ll qualify for a free entry pass to the farm with just a few purchases. It’s a bit like an OTOP, handicraft store and Thai specialty food outlet all wrapped into one. Find a special item or a real Thai gift. Instead of the usual bottle of wine, perhaps a bottle

of mangosteen fruit wine as the ‘red’ for a birthday present. Thai delicacies include fish sausages and every form of chilli known to man. There’s even a chilli sampling station if you are brave enough to try on the tongue! Thai desserts you will not see anywhere else could be a challenge as most labels are only in Thai language. For ladies there are fashion items, hand crafted and unique and for kids the most colourful selection of lollypops and ... Read more on Page 20..... ‘Rick the Brick’ V ‘Gentleman Jim’

Sjomannskirken – The Norwegian Traveller’s Friend If you want to be noticed, enjoy a fun way to travel around Cha-Am and have a little energy to spare, the Cha-Am ‘Party Bike is the way to go. This pedal-powered 12 seater, probably seen by most as a regular participant in the annual Songkram parade, had its most unusual riders ever recently. The Reverend Ragnavald Seierstad, Vidar Svava and other members of the Norwegian Seamen’s Mission were in town and wanted to let the locals know. The Norwegian Church Abroad or The Norwegian Seamen’s Church (Norwegian: Sjømannskirken) is a religious organisation serving Norwegians and other Scandinavians travelling abroad. Founded in 1864, The Norwegian Seamen’s Mission – Sjømannsmisjonen – was established to secure the moral and religious education of Scandinavian seafarers, but also to give them a “breathing room” where a fellow countryman was available to lend an ear and give some attention. Today, the churches and their staff together with travelling pastors around the globe represent a “resource centre” for all Norwegians travelling internationally.

The experience of being a Muay Thai boxer is not on the ‘bucket list’ for most of us. Although not considered a brutal sport, with tradition and sportsmanship taking pride of place, it’s still hand-to-hand combat.

The chances are that even the winner will bare the ‘scars of war’. Our trip to the Grand Muay Thai Boxing Stadium in Hua Hin was to witness Cha-Am’s ‘Rick the Brick’ tick off that item. ...Read more on Page 20.....

The Sjømannskirken group are regular visitors to Cha-Am, based in Pattaya but travelling across the country. They provide pastoral care and respond to request from hospitals, prisons and from the Norwegian Embassy when one of their countrymen is in need. In Pattaya, annually there are around 25,000 visitors to the church, not only those in difficulties, but those looking for a way to reconnect to their church or to their

fellow-countrymen. Reverend Ragnavald has a very positive view about Norwegians in Thailand. From his perspective, only a minority lead lives which could be described as ‘at risk’, the majority are really playing a very productive and fulfilling role in the community. In Cha-Am the church unofficial logo, a heart shaped waffle was on offer and enjoyed by the local Norwegian fraternity. As the logo suggest, a heartwarming way to meet the locals. If you want further information visit the website (including an ‘online church’) or call the Pattaya office. 20 News Getting Healthy For The King When there is a big occasion in Cha-Am, the ocean fronted ‘view point’ is often the venue of choice for celebrations. Just prior to the King’s birthday, the crowds gathered once again for aerobics, dancing and other expressions of how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

More Measures To Ease Bangkok Traffic Jams Soon

There was free healthy finger food on offer, medical checks and advice available and encouragement to join in the fun. The dancing displays included Latin and

modern styles, with an enthusiastic yellowshirted crowd doing their best to follow all the moves. A great way to begin the birthday celebrations with all ages joining in the fun in a healthy way.

Thailand Are 2014 Suzuki Cup Champions After a Late Comeback

In another effort to ease traffic jams in the capital due to construction of several electric train projects, the Transport Ministry has announced several measures that will see relocation of passenger dropoff areas on major roads and redirecting traffic on some roads to ease traffic problems. Transport ministry’s permanent-secretary Mrs Soithip Trisuddhi revealed the ministry’s measures to cope with traffic congestion after presiding over the meeting with the Department of Highway, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), and the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to discuss the congestion issue. She raised the Vibhavadi Rangsit Road saying it is the major inbound and outbound transport route that Bangkok motorists use where the constructions of the electric railway and the overpass bridges will intensify traffic congestion.

The young Thai team staged a remarkable comeback, conceding 3 goals before getting two late goals of their own from Charyl Chappuis and Chanathip Songkrasin to win the AFF Suzuki Cup with an aggregate score of 4-3 – a match few will forget. In the home fixture Thailand defeated Malaysia 2-0. “We played a beautiful game, a fantastic game,” Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang said after the match. Thailand now has a record-equaling fourth title but their first for 12 years, while Kiatisak is he first person to win it as a player and a coach. The winner was also awarded 25 million THB. Chanathip said the Thai team didn’t panic after seeing three goals from Malaysia and continued to play at their own pace. ...From Page 19..... other sweet tempters. They are not expensive but the chances are you will have spent enough for that free farm pass. The ‘urban farm’ is quaint, it’s not huge but you can take a horse-drawn buggy ride as an alternative to a gentle stroll through the carefully maintained and planned gardens. Animals to get the kids excited include sheep to bottle feed, rabbits, ducks and Shetland ponies to ride. Photography opportunities are a-plenty amongst the scarecrows, hay bales or Western styled out- buildings. We’ve yet to have a meal at the restaurant although one reason for the visit was an unsolicited recommendation from a friend who was very impressed with the quality and prices of the meals. If your visit coincides with mealtime, we would be confident that eating on-site would be a great finale to the day.

Defeat was cruel for Malaysia, who appeared to have pulled off another great escape after they overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit in the semi-final against Vietnam by winning 4-2 in Hanoi. This was the tenth edition of the AFF (Asean Football Federation) Championship, the football championship of Southeast Asia. Co-hosting rights to the group stages were awarded to Singapore and Vietnam with matches being held on 22 November to 20 December 2014. Meanwhile, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand also hosted knock-out stage matches, as their teams advanced to the semi-finals. Singapore was the defending champion, but failed to qualify from the group stage.

1,000 Sook – Some Information: Where: About 10 kilometres north of ChaAm on the left heading towards Bangkok. It’s the furthest ‘entertainment Alley’ destination away from Cha-Am. When: Open every day from 8.00 AM to 9.30 PM Cost: 50 THB adults, 30 THB children (farm entry) Tips: See if you qualify for free farm entry by shopping first. Take a Thai ‘translator’ if you really want to know what is in the package. Recommended For: Families with young children, romantic couples and souvenir hunters. Coming Soon! The entry sign already describes balloon rides. We understand that soon to be installed will be a balloon capable of taking visitors into the air to see the sights from above.

She said the ministry will be assigning new measures to solve or ease the traffic congestion, including a re-arrangement of the passenger pick-up and drop-off area in front of the Don Mueang airport train station, and the traffic flow re-arrangement on the road.

“Rick The Brick” ...From Page 19..... It’s been on the bucket list of Rick De Bies for some time; just ‘something he wanted to do’. After months of preparation at the Chock Dee Cha-Am Gym, Rick was ready to rumble in his first (and probably last) time in the ring. The banner was ready and the team ‘anthem’ (a crude version of Pink Floyd’s; ‘Another Brick Rick in the Wall’) was practised in the minibus en route. ‘Rick the Brick’??? To Rick’s embarrassment this is a name he’s probably stuck with for life. He can thank his local support team for that! Rick is a tall, strong and healthy looking Dutchman. A real ‘gentle giant’, who was outwardly calm and relaxed. His only stated concern was that he had no idea of the strengths or weaknesses of his opponent; his experience, height or weight. Just an Englishman named James. Rick was finding it hard to conjure up some aggression towards someone he couldn’t visualise. Physically the combatants were evenly matched, although Rick’s big disadvantage was a thirty year age difference. Rick is a very youthful 55 year old, with James a mere 25 years of age. This was probably the main factor leading to James being awarded the narrow points decision after three rounds. He was just a little more nimble on his feet and Rick a little more exposed. The contest could not have been described as classical Muay Thai, with the boxers following the Marquiss of Queensbury Rules rather than Muay Thai with the use

The re-arrangement of the passenger pick-up and drop-off area at the bus stop in front of the Don Mueang airport is expected to come into effect immediately with staff on site to provide assistance. Another measure is to rearrange the traffic on the Kamphaeng Phet 6 road and the Choet Wutthakat road. It will be reassigned as a one-way route with inbound traffic on the Kamphaeng Phet 6 Road and outbound traffic on the Choet Wutthakat road. The entrance and exit road to the exit 9 of the Don Mueang airport will be renovated and equipped with railings on the sides of the road to prevent cars from picking up and dropping off passengers. The plan is expected to be finished before the 2015 Songkran festival. Mrs Soithip said that the ministry has also planned to construct connecting roads to the Red Line commuter train which is expected to be in service by 2018 to facilitate the passengers. The ministry has ordered the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to study and design the crossings and the connecting roads within six months. The Department of Highway has suggested the construction of the underpasses and tunnels on the SRT’s land, she added. of feet being a feature. More like a good old fashioned ‘slug fest’ now enshrined on YouTube. Check out the action (Rick in the blue shorts) at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=iVL1i6UhRaU. At the conclusion Rick, sporting some minor facial swelling, described himself as….…… .“satisfied”. Winning was not the aim, just achieving his ambition without disgrace. Mission accomplished! ‘Gentleman Jim’ was also a gracious sport and the two were able to ‘grin and bare it’ with a post-fight beer; no malice remaining. The Grand Muay Thai Boxing Stadium holds competitive boxing every Wednesday and Friday night from 9 PM. The first bouts are likely to be young boxers (around 10 or 12 years old), followed by some women’s bouts before the main events. news 21 London Hosts World Summit in the Fight Against Depression

Monster Phuket Python Caught, A Six Metre Record

Global leaders, policy makers, industry professionals and academics called on countries around the world to do more to help the 350 million people suffering from depression. Meeting at ‘The Global Crisis of Depression: summit, participants, including Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General, Norman Lamb MP, Minister of State for Care and Support, United Kingdom and Nick Haekkerup, Minister of Health, Denmark stressed that healthcare systems, businesses and the general public need to work together to fight depression.

Rescue workers have wrangled a sixmetre-long python out from under a Phuket home owner’s house.

Kofi Annan told the delegates: “Depression has many impacts and dimensions. The danger is that this can make it harder to shape a coherent and effective response. We need to build the widest possible partnerships and use effective resources to overcome these challenges. I don’t underestimate the scale of the challenge but I’ve seen how progress can be delivered in the most testing circumstances. We have the knowledge to tackle depression; we now need to find the will and resources to use this knowledge to transform the lives of hundreds and millions of people.” “I hope that today’s meeting has given people a greater understanding of the significant impact of depression and its effect on society and the economy. We have examined what measures governments and businesses are taking to address the impact of depression and looked at best practices to deal with the issue,” said Professor David Haslam, Chair, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. “However, much needs to be done. It is now time to move forward to a future that sees the overall quality of life of patients suffering from depression

“It took us about two hours to remove the snake. It was absolutely huge. Weighing about 80kg, it was by far the biggest snake we’ve caught in the past 10 years,” said Sayan Thammapan, Ruamjai Rescue Foundation team leader. improved and the economic impact of depression minimised.” Depression is now the leading cause of disability worldwide. In Europe it accounts for more than 7% of premature mortality and now costs European governments more than EUR92 billion per year. It is estimated that more than a quarter of citizens of working age have suffered from a form of mental illness including depression, placing a huge strain on economic productivity and society welfare. The personal and societal costs have also become significant, including higher health care costs for individuals and employers, family care giver burdens and serious complications for the patients themselves. “Depression can be a devastating illness and I’m determined to make sure anyone affected gets the support they need. We are making progress - England is a world leader in improving access to talking therapies, we have a ground breaking plan to transform mental health care and I’ve challenged every FTSE 100 company to fight discrimination by signing up to Time to Change,” said Norman Lamb MP, Minister of State for Care and Support, United Kingdom.

National Police Chief Instructs Urgent Improvement of 191 Emergency Call Center

The python had taken over the crawl space under the home in the Baan Maneekram housing estate in Chalong, forcing the rescue workers to crawl in after it. “We had to catch it from a sitting position. Finally, I was able to get the rope loop

The assignment was made when the Commissioner-General presided over a workshop held to develop the 191 staff efficiency in taking public calls. He said he had tried calling the 191 in the middle of one night and found some difficulties to reach the service. He noted it was necessary for the centers to have sufficient personnel. He said besides that the call centers in 25 provinces still need improvement in terms of telephone line systems and equipment for call recording.

According to a survey, around 15 per cent of telephone lines were unable to access the 191. However, the international standard requires that the number of such calls must be less than 5 per cent. Operators must pick up a call within 4 seconds, and report the head office within 1 minute. Patrol units serving around urban areas must reach the caller within 5 minutes and 15 minutes for those serving outside Bangkok. Pol Gen Somyot said he also planned to tighten law enforcement covering the emergency call service in order to deal with a large number of fake calls and perturbing calls.

The enormous snake was released at the Khao Phra Thaew Wildlife Sanctuary in Thalang.

Americans In Thailand

This illustrated guide to America’s 300-year presence in Thailand is admirably modest about old glories and honest about the bad guys.

The Americans in Thailand deserve full credit for offering a fair and honest appraisal of themselves in “Americans in Thailand”, an exhaustive and valuable compendium of the men and women from the Land of the Free who made their mark on the Land of Smiles. It includes the “ugly” variety right alongside the worthy Yankee heroes who’ve earned mentions in the annals of Thai history. Most Thais and expatriates can list a good number of Americans who’ve come to prominence in Thailand, from the missionary Dan Beach Bradley and pioneering entrepreneur Robert Hunter (of Chang and Eng fame) to the CIA spooksturned-groundbreaking businessmen Jim Thompson and Alexander MacDonald, to the esteemed author William Warren and the royally favoured tycoon Bill Heinecke. They’re all fully profiled in “Americans in Thailand” alongside shorter visits with the endless succession of writers. You have Graham Greene, who described the original “Ugly American”, Carol Hollinger (“Mai Pen Rai Means Never Mind”) and Jack Reynolds, who wrote “A Woman of Bangkok”, the original bar-girl novel.

Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Somyot Poompanmuang has ordered an urgent improvement of the service of 191 Emergency Call Center, to ensure its handling of public calls during the New Year holiday.

eventually pulled it apart”. Among other surprises, Ulysses Grant spent five days in Siam in 1879, during a world tour following his presidency. The Civil War victor was in Singapore when King Chulalongkorn invited him to pay a visit and is quoted as subsequently saying that, of all the places thus far on his voyage, “I have seen nothing that has interested me more than Siam.” The first Americans to visit Siam were likely Captain Stephen Williams and his ship’s crew. Williams came in search of sugar in 1818 - three years earlier than the history books currently place the first American arrival - and went home with an order for Yankee flintlock rifles. The Bangkok Post (founded by Alex MacDonald) and its archives played a primary role in the creation of “Americans in Thailand”. The newspaper company must be congratulated on an eminently collectible resource and an immensely engaging history. ‘Americans in Thailand’; by various authors. Published by Didier Millet, 2014. But there are scores of names that will be unfamiliar to most people, even to their own countrymen. The founder of the Neilson Hays Library, for example, or Edward Strobel, the general adviser who guided Rama V’s hand in dealing with slavery, gambling and European colonialists. Genevieve Caulfield established the Bangkok School for the Blind. Architect Robert Boughey designed Q House and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Harry “Heine” Aderholt was the brigadier general who kept Air America flying. As to the US war in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, Thai-American relations get a detailed and candid examination in the chapter called “Armed Americans”. Once revealed, the truth about the two nations’ cooperation during that period, it begins, “proved to be both the glue which strengthened it and the centrifuge that HUA HIN TODAY, January 2015

News 27 Royal Thailand Police Spokesman: “Tourists DO NOT Need To Carry Passports”

Government’s New Year Fuel Price ‘Gift’

Police Lieutenant General Prawut Thawornsiri, spokesman for the Royal Thai Police, has said tourists DO NOT need to carry passports at all times. His comment came when he was responding to the recent tourist shakedown reports in various media outlets over the past month. He stated that if asked to show their passports, tourists can produce their documents at a later time if necessary. With his clarification, Mr Thawornsiri brings an end to an expat point of argument spanning years relating to the need to carry a copy, the original or nothing at all.

The National Energy Policy Committee has lowered the price of diesel fuel and petrol by Bt1 and Bt2 a litre respectively in what has been labelled a New Year gift in line with government policy.

Hua Hin Today has previously accurately conveyed this information however speculation has continued. We hope this statement finally resolves the question and reassures our readers.

Australian Government Cracks Down on Bizarre Requests from Travellers

Consular officials in Bangkok are used to helping Australians in compromising situations, but even they were shocked when a man asked taxpayers to foot the bill for a prostitute. The request is just one example of bizarre requests the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are cracking down on. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has launched a new strategy for consular officials to deal with the problem, warning Australian travellers to stop expecting the government to bail them out if they get in trouble. People who make repeat requests for unreasonable assistance will be turned down. Some of the more outrageous requests made of consular officials include one person who asked staff to take care of a pet parrot and feed a woman’s dogs while she was overseas. The Bangkok mission deals with the most requests for assistance, followed by Bali, Manila, Los Angeles and Dubai. Top Ten Weird Requests: 1) A traveller who was destitute in Europe refused to return to Australia without their pet bird, which could not be returned for quarantine reasons 2) A mother who wanted the embassy in Bangkok to book accommodation and a return ticket to Australia for her son, then

“This is a gift from the government in celebration of the New Year,” Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said. He added that since the National Council for Peace and Order, which he also heads, seized power from the elected government, fuel prices in Thailand had dropped by nearly B10 a litre. “The prices may get even lower in the future,” he said. Prayut said the fuel-price structure had been distorted, causing motorists to use liquefied petroleum gas and forcing the country to import more of the product. Nevertheless, he said the LPG price for households would remain

unchanged. For oil-based fuels, he said more price cuts were possible. The Oil Fund, which currently has a balance of Bt20 billion, will be kept to help stabilise fuel prices when they go up, he said. The Supreme Energy Board agreed to restructure fuel prices, outlining six key policies: Energy prices must reflect their true costs; excise tax rates should be similar for each transport fuel; and crosssubsidy between fuel products must be reduced. It also said the marketing margin of motorfuel retailers must be at appropriate levels and low-income earners must be taken care of. The National Energy Policy Committee also approved a feed-in tariff structure for electricity purchased from renewable power projects and a 15-year power-development plan.

Can the High Commission arrange for a risk assessment and some armoured cars? We only need them for a week.” 5) A traveller who asked whether the sand in Egypt would affect her asthma 6) “Why won’t the Australian embassy come and pack my bags for me? I’m an 80 year old architect travelling by myself and too old to pack my own bags” 7) “Can the embassy obtain prescription medicine from Australia and send it to me so I can continue my holiday?” 8) Requests for embassies to store luggage, hold mail, provide banking facilities or arrange tours for Australian travellers 9) A caller wanted to know the average salary for an expat to expect in Thailand 10) “Can the embassy tell the local police that I have an excellent driving record in Australia and should not have to pay those outstanding speeding fines?” * List provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade HUA HIN TODAY, January 2015

Diese Fashion Show of the Year zum 12 jähriges Jubiläum von Hua Hin Today, war wirklich sensationell.

May God bless him.

The Power of Four Year’s Love The Power of Love Church was founded in December 2010 with the original thought coming from Mr. Andrew Stocks. It’s very first Service at The Marriott Resort and Spa in Hua Hin and had around 30 people in attendance. Since then the organisation has grown along with support for the less fortunate in the community. There’s many more years of love on the way! For more information visit: www.thaipolic.com

34 News Prayut Orders All Government Facilities to Have Access For wheelchairs

10 Years After The Boxing Day Tsunami

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he has instructed all government facilities to be accessible to the handicapped and those who require supporting equipment.

Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has lead foreign envoys and relatives of the 2004 tsunami victims in a memorial marking the 10th anniversary of the disaster in Khao Lak, north of Phuket, on December 26th.

Prayut said all government facilities must assure that social equality is upheld and fundamental rights are protected. “These facilities and services include mass transit, public restrooms, and other places that need ramps for people who travel in wheelchairs. These ramps must not be too steep so that the disabled can help themselves. Ramps must also connect places in the facility, so that people in wheelchairs can have equal access to things they need,” Prayut said. He said Koh Kret, famous tourism sites been developed as a creation of Universal

Mode. The project has been carried out with help from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ministry of Transport, Chulalongkorn University, Pak Kret Municipality, and members of Pak Kret community. He said the Koh Kret model “is to promote the convenience and safety of the handicapped and those who require supporting equipment to go about daily life”. “The definition includes the elderly, recovering patients, veterans, young children, pregnant women and even ladies in high heels and short skirts. They will be able to leave home and carry out activities conveniently and safety, able to roam freely and independently without requiring the assistance of those around them,” Prayut said.

Gov’t to Establish One-Stop-Service Center for Issuing Official Permits

The government is to set up a One-StopService Center to process public requests for official permits, in a bid to provide greater convenience and cut down chances of corruption.

The center will process all types of requests that are not related to the decisions of the parliament, the cabinet or the court of justice. It will not proceed on any application asking to use natural resources.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said in his weekly television program “Return Happiness to the People” that his government is to shorten the duration of official services to issue various permits.

The officers who have received the requests will be authorized to check the transparency of the documents and must fulfill their purposes within seven days.

The draft Bill on the Establishment of a Center to Facilitate Issuance of Official Permits authorises all ministers to set up a one-stop-service center as a coordinator between the government sector and the people to ensure the latter’s requests would be processed immediately. Gen Prayut also mentioned in the TV program that the government has amended regulations to facilitate foreign investments. It has also set up a legal consultancy clinic for people with no nationalities and expand the registration of illegal workers to cover the Vietnamese.

PM Prayuth has presided over the opening of the event, titled “Hold Me Tight” with more than 1,300 attendees He thanked those who provided aid after the devastating disaster. The ceremony was held at the Tor 813 Tsunami Memorial Park at Khao Lak. The site of the memorial park and patrol boat Tor 813 is one kilometre inland, where the boat was stranded by the tsunami. A confirmed 3,950 people died in Khao Lak, though estimates including the number of people missing in the area after the waves exceeded 4,500. Among those in Khao Lak who died was Bhumi Jensen, grandson of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The ceremony was in memory of the victims who lost their lives in the waves. The Thai government had invited VIPs from many other countries to attend the ceremony.

Multi-faith ceremonies were held at the patrol boat memorial site, and a ‘Light Up’ ceremony and musical performances on stage during the evening. On December 27th, PM Prayuth and the delegation visited Baan Nam Khem and Chai Pattana-Kachad Thai (Ban Thung Rak) villages, which are regarded as model villages in exemplifying post-tsunami rehabilitation. More than 2,000 of the 6,000 inhabitants at Baan Nam Khem died in the waves. In Phuket, tsunami memorial services began with the traditional memorial and multifaith services at the Tsunami Memorial Wall at Mai Khao in the morning, and included the annual Light Up Phuket candlelight vigil on Patong Beach that night. “The victims of the 2004 tsunami will not be forgotten. We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to both national and international organisations which worked hard to ease the suffering of victims and their families,” said the Foreign Ministry’s permanent secretary Sihasak Phuangketkaew.

Deputy Prime Minister Says No Common ASEAN Currency

Although hopes are high for greater economic integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2015, the region should not replicate the mistake of the European Union and adopt a single currency, the Thai Deputy Prime Minister has stated. “A common currency will require a common interest rate structure,” Pridiyathorn Devakula told the Bloomberg Asean Business Summit, a forum held in Bangkok.

“It would be unrealistic to think that an interest rate structure that will fit [the] leading economies of ASEAN will be proper for other members within the association,” he said. The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will come into play in late 2015, is intended to create a tariff-free single market among the 10 member nations, but a single currency is not on the table.

36 Spa & Health Five Star Spa Experience For All!

SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) or ‘Pumpuang Disease If we talk about “Pumpuang disease”, I am sure that everybody in Thai society must be very familiar with it as the disease which cost Miss Pumpuang Duangjan, a very famous country folk singer in Thailand, her life. In this article, we will be talking about this Puampuang disease or as medically called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). What is the cause of this disease? What are its symptoms? And what criteria are used to indicate that a person has SLE. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) (a.k.a. autoimmune disease) is a disease caused by the dysfunction of our autoimmune system. Rather than acting against foreign substances from outside the body, the dysfunction acts against or destroys the cells of various organs in its own body, which cause inflammation. Organ inflammation often occurs to the skin, joints, kidneys, blood system or nervous system. One of its features is that the exacerbation will come once in a while alternate with the calm. In some cases the symptoms are very minimal or there are no symptoms at all, but some the symptoms can be severe. The Cause of SLE is still unclear. However, the medical profession believes that there are certain factors involved with the occurrence of SLE as follows: 1. Gender, Genetics and Race: SLE is found in females more than males (9: 1) in the age range of 20-45 years. The medical profession also found that the testosterone, in particular the estrogen, is associated with the occurrence and the severity of the disease. Relatives of the person who has SLE are more likely have the disease, especially the female relatives. The incidence of SLE was found in those with black and yellow coloured skin more than white, especially in East Asian. 2. Environmental Factors such as Ultraviolet rays in sunlight or chemicals encourage the occurrence of the disease. A viral or bacterial infection can also encourage exacerbation. However, there is still no discovery of the virus or bacteria causing the disease. HUA HIN TODAY, January 2015

3. Stress, both physically and mentally, including lack of sleep and working strenuously can also encourage the exacerbation of SLE. 4. Dysfunction of the immune system by having reactions to its own antigen resulting in the formation of antibodies. Some will attach to its own antigen creating Immune Complex disease and go to different organs and different parts of our body causing inflammation and tissue damage. Patients will be diagnosed with SLE when presenting four of these symptoms: 1) A fever of about 38 degree Celsius for many days 2) Red rashes on their face, cheekbones and nose 3) Mouth lesions similar to canker sores with slow recovery rate 4) Discoid Lesion 5) The symptoms of Arthritis in many joints equally appearing on both side of the body 6) Allergic to sunlight 7) Inflammation of lining such as Pleurisy and Pericarditis 8) Symptoms in blood system such as Hemolytic anemia, low leukocyte, and low platelet 9) Neurological symptoms such as seizures and depression with no explanation 10) Positive results from Antibody Blood Tests 11) Positive results in blood tests for Anti – DNA, LE cell, Anti – Sm, or received positive result in VDRL The facts about SLE are not easy but not too hard to understand. If we pay enough attention in taking care of our health and our body, SLE can be detected early and we are able to avoid certain factors which encourage the occurrence or severity of the disease. Therefore, if you suspect that you may have SLE, we recommend that it is best to consult with a medical specialist, together with having the laboratory analysis.
