Does Solving Monkey’s Over-population in Thailand Really Need THB 1.5 Billion Budget?

泰国官方解决猴子 的问题有必要用15亿 泰铢的预算吗?

The TAT together with local business operators in Hua Hin and nearby districts have organised the “Amazing Hua Hin 2019” campaign in order to promote tourism and travel for both local tourists and foreigners during the so called ‘Green Season’, by offering lowered room rates and restaurants at a special price of up to 50% discount from September 1 – 30, 2019. Ms. Soraya Homchuen, Director of TAT, Prachuab Kirikhan Office, says “the campaign will also help generate additional income to stimulate the economy and to manage throughout the Green Season or the ‘off-season’.”

For the past 3 years, Thai tourism industry has suffered a consistent dip in campaigns, promotions, as well as revenue, with Hua Hin not immune. Ever since the Thai Baht strengthened early last year and with the devaluation of the British Pound, European tourists have significantly declined. Despite of the slight increase in trips to Thailand made by Chinese and Indian tourists in the recent months, the entire outlook in the industry doesn’t look overly convincing. The Amazing Hua Hin 2019 campaign is set to ‘break the ice’ and put Hua Hin back into the limelight of tourism. The TAT hopes to persuade tourists, as well as expats living in Hua Hin and nearby cities, to take advantage of this special cost-effective campaign during this ‘off-season’ month that will benefit everyone. Local TAT office has requested cooperation from business establishments in Hua Hin and nearby areas, which includes hotel businesses and accommodation, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and the like. Business operators participating in this campaign are encouraged to offer discounts of 10 - 50% so as to attract more tourists from September 1 - 30, 2019. Read more on page 4

Plans exist to move over 100,000 monkeys throughout Thailand to a designated Monkey Settlement, yet three years have passed and still no monkeys have been moved. The budget for monkey management has been discussed. Initially plans set Lopburi as a pilot province; yet the plan is somehow still pending. On 21st June 2019, the third consideration of the agenda chose Patthana Nikhom district to be the location of the monkey settlement, as it has enough space to relocate all of the monkeys; locals, however, disagree. As the growing monkey population has become a huge problem throughout Thailand, Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-o-Cha, commanded every related section to participate in solving monkey the monkey management issue by settling on Lopburi as the location for the monkey settlement. Due to the PM’s command, the National Legislative Assembly hired institutes from four of Thailand’s universities: Kasatesart University, Thammsat University, Mahidol University, and Khonkan University, to help design the settlement.

Officials were told, “The m o n keys u s u a l l y d a m a g e p ro p e r t y, s t e a l f o o d a n d aggressively invade homes. To make matters worse, they also bite local people.” There are now two solutions to the problem. If locals agree to continue to live with the monkeys, officials will sterilise them to control the growing population. If not, officials will probably move the monkeys to either monkey settlements or remote islands. Otherwise, they will let the monkeys die of natural causes, since the lifespan of a monkey is about 20 years. The news of relocating monkeys became the talk of the town back in May last year when committees on Animal Welfare discussed “The solution to Monkey management in the crisis area, following the strategy of monkey management for sustainability”. Since then, news subject never to be spoken of, yet the project continues, and though the budget has now been spent. Sadly, it has been three years since the Prime Minister implemented the measures, but to date, not a single monkey has been moved. Read more on page 4

2 “Woman with a Very Beautiful Heart” Usually, when we drop or lose our wallet or purse, seldom do we really expect to get it back, especially if there’s a lot of money in it; but not with Ms. Chompoonuch. In the early morning of August 9th, Ms. Chompoonuch Mangpraset, a 22 year old receptionist at Talay Hotel and Villas at Cha-am Beach in Petchburi province, found a wallet and a pack of cigarettes dropped in front of the hotel. She checked inside the wallet and found that it belonged to a foreigner named John Anderson. The wallet contained 3 credit cards and a cash amount of 19,032 Baht. Chompoonuch went to the Cha-am Police Station to report the wallet she’d found so that the police could locate the owner. Her act of honesty was appreciated by the local police. Chompoonuch told a Hua Hin Today reporter that around

4:30 a.m. that day while she was working at the front office, a hotel guest walked down from his room to do his morning exercise at the beach and spotted the wallet lying on the footpath. The guest asked if one of the hotel guests might have dropped the wallet. Chompoonuch responded that it might be, so she took the wallet and opened it. To her surprise, she found that there were many thousands of baht as well some credit cards inside. She later made announcement to all hotel guests, saying she had a lost wallet, but nobody came to claim it. Eventually, Chompoonuch and her friend decided to go to the police station to file a report as a record of evidence so the police could follow up the case and hopefully find the owner of the wallet..

Dear readers, First and foremost, I hope you are all in your finest health condition as you receive September’s paper. As you can see in our headline, you will have this opportunity of receiving up to 50% discount from our participating establishments during this “Amazing Hua Hin 2019” campaign which has started September 1 until the 30th I personally would like to invite and encourage expats, locals and tourists to join in and contribute to this special costeffective promotion organised by the local TAT office and Hua Hin Municipality. In this issue, we have added yet another informative ‘special news section’ written in Chinese. Although you will notice that there has been a rise in Chinese tourists visiting our resort-town Hua Hin, Thailand had the largest Chinese population in Southeast Asia (about 6 – 9 million people of mixed Thai/ Chinese blood). So, by adding a Chinese page in our newspaper, I believe that it could broaden our service in bringing information for our readers, to both the tourists and locals. And lastly, November will be our newspaper’s 17th year anniversary, so there’s no other better timing in launching our bimonthly subscriptions. There you go… you have the “Amazing Hua Hin 2019” to join in, a new foreign language page, and a twice-a-month newspaper subscription coming to you very soon.

Does Solving Monkeys Throughout Thailand REALLY Need THB 1.5 billion Budget?

The pilot program in Lopburi province is still the preferred solution to dealing with monkeys in the area of Phra Kan Shrine and Prang Sam Yod. Lopburi Provincial Livestock Office claimed that there are more than 2,200 macaques and long-tailed macaque monkeys within the city, with other districts totalling around 10,000. From 2017 - 2018, officials controlled the monkey population six times and identified them all. At present, there is an increase of only 800 1,000 monkeys since controlling population by sterilisation. Protected Areas Regional Office Saraburi expects that in the 4 year period of 2019 – 2023, the masques, including long-tailed macaque, will increase to 88,278; this evaluation is based on female monkeys who are able to give birth when they are two years old. If there is no plan to deal with monkeys, by 2023, the monkey population will increase by 400% from where it is now. How c a n we de al w i t h monkeys? Where to relocate them? To move 10,000 monkeys in Lopburi as the pilot program has HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

divided local residents into two groups. There are those who say that the monkeys can be a symbol of Lopburi’s tourism attracting both Thai and foreign visitors. Meanwhile, others have said the monkeys are an annoyance. Residents in the area of Khao Praya Dern Thong were interviewed. This is where there are official plans to build the monkey settlement, though there are many condominiums, hotels, hospitals and a forest, which may wind up being the habitat of the monkeys. “No monkeys!” One local decried pretentiously. Another said that, “moving the monkeys to here (Khao Phraya Dern Thong) would make this place a tourist attraction and gain lots of benefits to the local residents nearby.” “If the monkeys are all good, move them to your house,” another villager said. “The issue of relocating the monkeys is not very different from the building of a garbage power plant. Though there are many advantages, everyone wants the electricity, just don’t build the plant near my house.” Moving Monkeys throughout Thailand is Uneasy Villagers in the area of Pattana district, Chonburi province, which is suggested to be the monkey settlement said, “If the lifespan of a monkey is 20 years,

then the sterilisation project would be a better choice. Although it takes time, we move monkeys to nowhere. Eventually the monkey population will decrease.” According to the reports from the Lopburi Provincial Livestock Office, to solving the monkey management issue by following villagers’ recommendation which no need to spend much of the 1.5 billion baht. Meanwhile in Hua Hin city, the municipality starts a birth control program. The growing population of macaques, currently around 3,000, has become a real disaster for local people and visitors. Although the city has implemented a birth control program, it has not worked as they had planned. Regardless, the municipality and Protected Areas Regional Office 3 signed an agreement that they are going to sterilise macaques in the area of Khao Takieb Mountain and Hin Lek Fai Hill between 22nd August – 7th September 2019. This will be performed at Hua Hin Dog Shelter. The operation will be carried out by the veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Hopefully, the project will effectively reduce the growing number of macaques in Hua Hin.

Lawyers Council of Hua Hin District Provides Volunteer Lawyers Project for Citizens

As of 13th August 2019, President of Lawyers Council of Hua Hin district Mr. Kunnawut Orsuwan, accompanied by Superintendent, amphoe Hua Hin Police Station Pol. Col. Thanakorn Wongsiriluck led attorney volunteers to station at Hua Hin Police Station to assist people with low incomes facing civil legal issues. According to the approval from Council of Ministers on March 19th 2019 to establish volunteer lawyer’s project under the national reform project “Quick Win”, there will be volunteer lawyers based in 150 Police stations throughout Thailand to help people with their legal cases during office hours (8.00 to 16.30 hours). The objectives of this project are to provide legal information and assistance to

people facing civil legal issues, reduce social inequality, and decrease a number of cases to the court. “The establishment of Volunteer lawyer’s project based in Police Station is intended to decrease the amount of cases occurring in the courts and the length of time in making lawsuits of defendant, victim or people,” Mr. Kunnawut said. Nowadays, there have been almost 10,000 volunteer lawyers throughout Thailand including 400-500 volunteer lawyers in Bangkok. Also, this project is expected to have 250,000 people ask for legal assistance, so that they can reduce their payment for lawsuits. Anyway, this project is still pilot programme within 6 months that will begin in August.

The Net Pracharat: The Village Broadband Internet Project Mr. Jirawat Pramanee, Permanent Secretary of Hua Hin Municipality, presided the meeting with Somsak Karunaphithak, head veterinarian, Department of Public Health and Environment and related officials, to accelerate the process in resolving the various issues in Hua Hin Dog Conservation Center. Frequently, there have been numerous complaints from nearby residents regarding

the nuisance from the dog center such as the consistent barking of the animals, foul odor, and the release of excessive waste water causing the drainage surrounding the center to overflow. Preliminary order has already been prioritized and direct instructions have been given to the authorities to solve the problem as soon as possible in order to alleviate the trouble of the residents being affected.

The government has been doing the Net Pracharat Project by expanding high-speed Internet network through the fiber optic cable network (Fiber-To-The-x : FTTx) so that local Thai people who live in the remote areas will be able to access broadband or high-speed Internet as those who live in the cities. In December 2017, about 24,700 target rural villages throughout the country were completely installed by the fiber cable network. In addition, since 2017, there have been 5.21 million users registered to access Wi-Fi Pracharat. Currently, the Council of Ministers agreed to follow the Open Access Network (OAN) model by allowing any telecommunications (or Internet) service providers who obtain licenses from NBTC to connect and use the Net Pracharat network without fees to provide last mile Internet service to customers with fair and affordable HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

price for local people. This is to promote infrastructure sharing that helps reducing infrastructure investment cost in rural areas. The Net Pracharat project helps reduce inequalities of Broadband Internet access. With high-speed internet network installed, local people who live in remote areas will be able to access useful content and services such as education, Public Health Services and Online Government Services: E-Commerce, E-Learning, E-Agricultural, and E-Government via Internet as those who live in cities. Accordingly, the government has attempted their best to improve the quality of lives of people by providing the Net Pracharat project so that Thai people throughout the country can access digital technology equally—this is also to launch the Thailand 4.0 policy by driving the country by innovation, knowledge, technology, and creativity.

the beach, revealing the coral reefs that live in shallow waters such as the Foliose Coral, Staghorn Coral, Anemone Coral, sea anemones and sea cucumbers.

The low sea water level had occurred again, and it’s the second time this year in Koh Talu island. Koh Talu is considered as one of the famous diving sites in Prachuab Kirikhan. This phenomenon causes the coral reefs and other sea creatures to emerge above the normal sea water level.

The authorities have collected images as the base and information of natural phenomena that occur each year, and will be useful to the relevant agencies. The rise and fall of sea level will not affect the coral reefs, even though at times the weather is gloomy and no sunlight penetrates the sea water throughout the day due tropical storms and monsoon season.

From the picture, you can see many different corals in the Pearl Bay and Big Bay area has emerged over a wide area after a huge reduction of sea water. It is the lowest level recorded for the second time this year. The first recorded low sea water occurred in early June, and the second one, recently occurred in the beginning of August. The Resource Restoration department from Talay Siam has confirmed that low sea water level will not affect the coral reefs

Chilli: Phrik

Thailand is known for the humble chilli, as it is the base of so many dishes, yet it is also a great ingredient to accelerate your metabolic rate. Not all chillies are hot, so if you want the benefits without the heat, simply choose the bigger red ones. The smaller the chilli, the hotter they are, making it simple to regulate your heat level. The #1 condiment in Thailand is Phrik Naam Bplaa, which is fish sauce with chilli; annoint your next Thai dish with it.

Turmeric: Khamin

Lime: Manao

Fresh turmeric is widely used in many dishes whose origins are in the south of Thailand. Fresh turmeric contains curcumin, an antioxidant that is said to be great to help reduce inflammation, but it also increases your metabolism. If you are looking to add turmeric to your diet, chew a centimetre piece of turmeric root in the morning on an empty stomach, add turmeric powder to your juice or smoothie, or select dishes that have pounded turmeric in the pastes like Khao Soi or try a Dtom Kha Khamin; a soup made with fresh turmeric.

One of the easiest ways to start your day off on the right foot is to have a warm glass of water with the juice of a lime or a lemon up to an hour before you eat breakfast. Devotees of this will tell you it gives the body an uplifting, early morning wake up call. It also aids digestion and overall body health. Like all citrus fruit, limes are a great source of Vitamin C and are good for boosting your metabolism and shredding those unwanted kilos.

Garlic: Gra-thiam

C o r i a n d e r, l i k e oregano, dill and fennel, is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help improve the metabolic rate by nullifying the harmful effects of free oxygen radicals. Fresh coriander is easy to find in local markets and is commonly served as a side dish when you order Isaan food. It adds texture and flavour and also some relief from the heat of dishes like Laap or Nam Dtok. There are many items that can help support your metabolism. Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is another disease that is highly prevalent in Thailand. The number of patients is calculated as around 6 – 10 percentage of the total population. 90 percent of the first infected person is affected by what is called an “acute infection”. Most people with acute hepatitis is usually able to resolve the symptoms with no problem. However, 10 percent of the infected person will become a carrier or diagnosed as having a chronic infection. When following up with this group of patients, the result shows that: 5 – 10 percent will have liver cancer; and 30 percent will have cirrhosis and enter the liver failure stage in a period of about 5 years. Although, chronic hepatitis receives many attentions in term of discovering treatment; however, there is still no measure or medicine that could cure hepatitis b for 100 percent. But if we are infected with hepatitis HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

b, what can we do to take care of ourselves? Treatment of patients with acute hepatitis B virus At present, the patient with acute hepatitis b does not have to take medicine. For an infected person

that is healthy, their body will be able to build immunity to the infection and can recover by themselves. Therefore, our main advice would be to take good care of yourself. Get enough rest. Eat nutritious food. Avoid alcohol drink, medicine, and other supplements that may have side effect as destruction of liver cells. But… For some patients that have the symptoms of nauseous and vomiting, they would have to avoid oily food and fried food. This is because their body cannot make enough bile to break down fats for digestion, causing such symptoms and have a poor appetite. This causes would make the patient lose their weight, thinning, and weakening because they did not receive enough nutrition. This makes their body unable to create any immunity to the infection, causing this group of patients to have chronic hepatitis b afterward. We will continue in our next article on how to take care of yourself and the treatment for patients with hepatitis b virus.

17 Gallstone is more dangerous than you think! However, patients always have concerns for the long-term effect of not having the gallbladder. The bile is created from the liver and then stored in the gallbladder. When you eat fattening food such as rice with pork leg, a very popular dish in Thailand, the stored bile is excreted to help digest fat. Therefore, if the gallbladder is removed, patients can still eat fatty diets as normal but it may take more time for the digestion so more proportion of vegetables and fish is recommended. We should avoid fattening food when we are 40 - 50 years old anyway.

are found. This type of gallstone is caused by an imbalance of the bile composition. The gallstones will cause problems when they obstruct the flow of bile causing inflammation in the gall bladder. They may also block the bile duct causing similar infection leading to jaundice or the condition of yellow eyes and skin and if the stones remain for a prolonged period of time, it increases the risk of cancer of the gall bladder and biliary system. The earliest symptoms of gallstones are distension and pain under the rib cage area or the middle part of the upper abdomen. Other symptoms include flatulence, easily full when eating a big meal or fatty diet. There are more severe symptoms with the inflammation of the gallbladder along with fever, nausea and vomiting. For the diagnosis, ultrasound of the abdomen can detect and help with the diagnosis. “Gallstone” is one of the most common biliary tract diseases found in 10 - 20% of the patients during the ultrasound examination. First of all, we can say that this disease is often found in Forty, Fertile, Fatty Female or in another word, the condition is commonly found in over-weighted women who are around 40 years of age and have a few children. Some people are symptom-free when the firstly detected during the examination, however, there is a risk of 1 - 2% per year for the symptoms to appear. The incidence of gallstones is increasing nowadays. Dr. Thawatchai Suksanong, our General Surgeon at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shares that his patients always have questions about what gallstones look like. The two main types of gallstones are cholesterol stone and pigment stone. In Asia, more pigment stone which is a dark color, round or square lumps

For the patients who are symptom-free, surgery may not be necessary. On the other hand, if the symptoms or complications appear, the timely surgery to remove the gall bladder is recommended. Currently, laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become a standard procedure for treatment for gallstones. During the procedure, 3 – 4 small holes are made for the insertion of the instruments into the abdomen, the patient will have less pain and will recover more quickly and can leave the hospital in 1 - 2 days. The hospitalization may be longer in cases with inflammation of the gall bladder. The conventional surgery may be needed in some cases with complications “ It is better for the patients to receive the cholecystectomy, surgical removal of the gallbladder, before it gets complicated or worse “ Dr. Thawatchai said.

After the surgery, the patients may find that oily food may still cause flatulence or fatty stool. Most patients can adjust themselves with the eating habits. For those with concerns can receive the annual health check up to prevent disease and with an early detection, it can be treated. General Surgery Clinic, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin

H1N1 Flu Virus (Swine Flu) H1N1 Flu is also known as swine flu. It’s called swine flu because in the past, the people who caught it had direct contact with pigs. That changed several years ago, when a new virus emerged that spread among people who hadn’t been near pigs. While swine flu isn’t as scary as it seemed a few years ago, it’s still important to protect yourself from getting it. Like seasonal flu, it can cause more serious health problems for some people. The best bet is to get a flu vaccine, or flu shot, every year. Swine flu is one of the viruses included in the vaccine. How Do You Catch It? When people who have it cough or sneeze, they spray tiny drops of the virus into the air. If you come in contact with these drops, touch a surface (like a doorknob or sink) where the drops landed, or touch something an infected person has recently touched, you can catch H1N1 swine flu.

People who have it can spread it one day before they have any symptoms and as many as 7 days after they get sick. Kids can be contagious for as long as 10 days. Despite the name, you can’t catch swine flu from eating bacon, ham, or any other pork product. Swine Flu Symptoms These, too, are pretty much the same as seasonal flu. They can include: Cough, Fever, Sore throat, Stuffy or runny nose, Body aches, Headache, Chills and Fatigue.

Like the regular flu, swine flu can lead to more serious problems including pneumonia, a lung infection, and other breathing problems. And it can make an illness like diabetes or asthma worse. If you have symptoms like shortness of breath, severe vomiting, pain in your belly or sides, dizziness or confusion and go to hospital. Are There Tests for Swine Flu? Yes. Without one it’s hard to tell whether you have swine flu or seasonal flu, because most symptoms are the same. If you have swine flu, you may be more likely to feel sick and your stomach and throw up than with regular flu. But a lab test is the only way to know. Even a rapid flu test you can get in your doctor’s office won’t tell you for sure. To test for swine flu, your doctor runs a swab -- a bigger version of the ones in your bathroom -- up the inside of your nose around the back of your throat. But the test isn’t as common or widespread as those for regular flu. So the only people who really need to be tested are those in the hospital or those at high risk for life-threatening problems from swine flu. How Is It Treated? Some of the same antiviral drugs that are used to treat seasonal flu also work against H1N1 swine flu. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu), peramivir (Rapivab), and zanamivir (Relenza) seem to work best, although some kinds of swine flu don’t respond to oseltamivir. These drugs can help you get well faster. They can also make you feel better. They work best when you take them within 48 hours of the first flu symptoms, but they can help even if you get them later on. Antibiotics won’t do anything for you. That’s because flu is caused by a virus, not bacteria. Over-the-counter pain remedies and cold and flu medications can help relieve aches, pains, and fever. Don’t give aspirin to children under age 18 because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Make sure that over-the-counter cold medications do not have aspirin before giving them to children.

Is There a Vaccine for Swine Flu? The same flu vaccine that protects against seasonal flu also protects against the H1N1 swine flu strain. You can get it as a shot or as a nasal spray. Either way, it “teaches” your immune system to attack the real virus. Besides a flu shot, there are other things you can do to stay healthy:

Wash your hands throughout the day with soap and water. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice to make sure you’ve washed long enough. Or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Avoid people who are sick.

18 Common Hoopoe Upupa epops

by Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

( onomatopoeia ) . The intervals between the verses are rarely longer than five seconds. Both sexes call for interference rough, rääh ‘ what strongly reminiscent of the warning cry of the Jay. During the breeding season, hisses and squeaks are also common, though at other times of year hoopoes are fairly quiet.

After hatching, the altrical chicks are covered with a fine down and are fed by both parents for 25-29 days until they leave the nest. After fledging, they stay near their parents for up to another week.

Habitat The Hoopoe is able to colonize a variety of habitats , but they are always exposed to heat, dry, not too dense wooded areas with only short or sparse vegetation at all. The species occurs mainly extensively in fruit and wine cultures in areas with livestock grazing on bushy areas . Also very sparse forests, especially pine forests, and extensive islands in closed stands of trees are sometimes used as breeding habitat. Distribution and systematics

The Hoopoe (Upupa epops ) is one of several species of the scientific family of the hoopoe bird ( Upupidae ). The number of subspecies varies according to scientific opinion between five and ten. Despite its attractive and distinctive plumage, the hoopoe is superbly camouflaged for its ground-feeding behavior in its preferred dry habitats. This bird is so outstandingly unique that it was revered in ancient Egypt, a symbol of virtue in Persia and he is the national bird of Israel. Appearance Characteristic features are the contrasting black and white banded wings with distinct yellow inclusions , the long, dark curved beak and the five to six inches long erectile crest. The tail is black with a wide white bandage about the last third of the tail. The rest of the body is ranging from pink-buff to orange-buff to tan. Also characteristic is the wave-shaped, butterfly -like fluttering flight. In several long , solid wing beats there are some short , fluttering , so that the air appears to be unstable and uneven. The sexes are very similar , the females are slightly smaller. While searching for food and arousal situations, the permanent nod is very striking. Vocalization It consists of mostly three (two to five ) dull , pipe flute-like elements on , u ‘ ( also , up ‘ or ‘ pu’ ) which carry very far. This reputation has led to the scientific genus name

Approximate range. nesting resident (all year) wintering Reproduction Hoopoes are monogamous birds. As cavity-nesters, they choose nesting sites low to the ground, often in a hole in a wall or occasionally in low nest boxes. The nest may be unlined or sparsely lined with bits of leaves, grass or feathers. A typical brood can have from 3-12 round, pale, milky blue eggs, and 1-3 broods may be laid per mated pair each season. The female parent incubates the eggs for 15-16 days, and the male may feed her during the incubation period.

Feeding The diet of the Hoopoe is mostly composed of insects, although small reptiles, frogs and plant matter such as seeds and berries are sometimes taken as well. It is a solitary forager which typically feeds on the ground. More commonly their foraging style is to stride on relatively open ground and periodically pause to probe the ground with the full length of their bill. Insect larvae, pupae and mole crickets are detected by the bill and either extracted or dug out with the strong feet. In addition to feeding in soil Hoopoes will feed on insects on the surface, as well as probing into piles of leaves and even using the bill to lever large stones and flake off bark. Common diet items include crickets, locusts, beetles, earwigs, cicadas, ant lions, bugs and ants. Enemy behavior The enemy behavior , the hoopoe have developed some special behaviors. The sudden appearance of a bird of prey , when a safe refuge in a hiding place is no longer possible the Hoopoes go into a camouflaged position that underpins how the body contour resolution can be as high contrast colored plumage. Here, the bird lays with wide spread wings and tail flat on the ground, neck, head and beak are steeply upward.

Sirindhorn - Forestry & Energy

Background

In 2000, the Border Patrol Police Bureau (BPPB), Huai Sai Royal Department Study Centre, and the Foundation for Mrigadayavan Palace under the patronage of HRH Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda Sirisobhabannavadi jointly established an International Environmental Park at Rama VI camp in Amphoe Cha-am, Petchaburi, for presentation to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2003, to be named as ‘The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park’ (SIEP) to celebrate on the occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 48th Birthday Anniversary. Its operation was designed to pursue the works during her stay at the camp in the hope that it will become a living natural museum which represents HRH the Princess’s honourable deeds and ingenuity in conservation of nature, environment, history, culture and tourism to both Thais and foreigners. HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

On the 13th of November 2000, HRH Princess Sirindhorn granted a royal permission to name the institute after herself as ‘The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park’ and to use the royal initials “Sor Tho” as a park logo. The park was then officially opened on July 19, 2008.

Energy for Environment Centre

Situated in the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park with the support of the Energy Conservation Promotion Fund, the Energy Policy and Planning Office, Ministry of Energy, the Energy for Environment Centre disseminates the awareness of energy conservation and environment.

Plantation

Mangrove forest area is in the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park, located at Khlong Bang Tra Yai and Khlong Bang Tra Noi. This area was originally an abundant mangrove forest, full of various types of

plants and habitat of animals. However, the destruction of forests in the area was degraded to almost a devastated forest. On 14th of August 1994 that HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, mentioned a proposal to Dr. Sumet Tantivejkul, at Mrigadayavan Palace to secure suitable land for mangrove planting and rehabilitation. On 17th August 1994, the Crown Princess planted several types of mangrove trees at the entrance of Khlong Bang Tra Yai and Khlong Bang Tra Noi and gave additional proposals to maintain the plantation and to continue planting further. Presently, mangrove forest areas in The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park has an increasingly abundance of ecosystem both in trees and animals. They become habitats of various animals including migratory birds. They also become a natural classroom for studying the ecology and biodiversity of the mangroves forest and help raise awareness to the enormous benefits of mangroves forest, which deserves preservation.

Honouring Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s Birthday 2019

August 12, 2019 in Hua Hin, Thailand - Dusit Thani Hua Hin guests and staffs gathered to honor a candle light vigil bringing guidance and eternal love which shall never fade amidst the countless blessings and good wishes made to Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sirikit… The Queen Mother also resembles the mother of the Kingdom of Thailand. “Many happy returns to Her Majesty the Queen Mother!”

In sickness and in health we shall never part

On August 10, 2019, Busaba and Matteo have finally ‘tied the knot’ and arranged an immaculate wedding at the Manora Property in Hua Hin. The long-withstanding relationship between Busaba Camenisch and Matteo Cvjeticanin began during their school days back in 2013. They both attended the same Hotel and Tourism Management University in Switzerland, where they met and started dating after a few months. During that time, they’ve studied and worked together in world’s top hotels around Switzerland, Jamaica and Croatia without clear plans in life on what to do and where to go after they complete their studies, let alone knowing that they will become lifetime partners in the future. Upon graduating from university in late 2016, they’ve made a decision to relocate in Hua Hin, Thailand where they joined the Manora Company Limited, a family business of Busaba, focused on property development and real estate. Manora Company Limited is one of the largest and consistent real estate agency and property developer in Hua Hin and also a gigantic contributor in property news for Hua Hin Today Newspaper. After more than 3 years of working and living in Hua Hin, they finally made a decision to exchange vows and got married. The ceremony was memorable and grandiose which was held in Khao Tao, with the presence of their family and close friends.

There are a few caves around the region however this one is quite spectacular as upon entry in the main chamber as there is a Royal Pavilion called Khuha Kharuehat. It is important to plan out your day to ensure you get to the main chamber around 9.30 to 10.30am as this is when the light shines brightly through the enormous cavern and lights up the pavilion. To get to the cave, you will be travelling about 45 minutes south from Hua Hin and you will end up at Sam Roi Yod National Park. You arrive at Bang Pu where you can buy tickets into the park. There are 2 ways you can get to the cave. Firstly there is a 2km walk to get to the cave which is not a flat walk or you can take a longtail boat, weather permitting, for 400thb for the boat.

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

You will arrive at Laem Sala Beach and it’s a short walk to where you start the climb up, 430 metres into the cave which will take about 30- 45 minutes depending on your fitness level and how long you stop at the half way point at the look out. Once you are at the top of the mountain, it is a short descend into the cavern which is eerily quiet, still yet cool environment. The pavilion is quite spectacular with a backdrop of trees behind it. There are plenty of vantage points where you can rest and take photos. The ceiling height of the main cavern is around 50metres high where

the Khuha Kharuehat sits. It is smaller than what you would expect, after seeing the photos, but none the less is spectacular. The pavilion was completed in 1890 to commemorate the visit from king Rama V. Other Kings, including the late King Bhumibol have visited the site. Best time to go: It is advisable to do on a dry day as the climb up and down can be very slippery due to the wet rocks and slippery mud. Get to the main cavern by no later than 10.30am to see the sun beaming through the cavern. Also, be getting there early you will beat the crowds and have an even more magical experience.

Tips: Wear walking shoes that have good tread as the decent can be slippery and there is very little to hold onto so your shoes need to be able to grip. Take water and a small towel with you as you will need it as it’s a sweaty adventure. Fitness level: you need to have medium level of fitness to be able to walk up and into the cave and back out again. The climb is steep and has not got man made steps. Cost: 200 THB per person for the Cave and 400 THB for the longtail boat. You can share the longtail boat with other travellers however you need to return with those people. Recovery: once completed there is a restaurant at the bottom of the mountain that you can stop and get refreshed or back at Bang Su where there are plenty of food and drink options.

6 34 5 Parenting Tips for Dealing with an Angry Teenager For parents, the first few years of taking care of a child seem overwhelming. But as the child grows, parents realize the increased challenges of parenting a kid during his or her teenage. In fact, many parents feel, as if, they are losing the kid they used to play within the backyard. This happens to almost every parent. And this time is not just difficult for parents, kids also feel confused and go through a tsunami of new emotions as they live their teenage years. Their biological characteristics change, which impacts their emotional understanding. At the same time, they try to understand their own place in this world. All these things turn a teenager into an angry child. The bigger problem is their children’s inability to express and manage their anger correctly. Which is why teenagers often find themselves into trouble. Teenage kids can feel a strong need to shout, act out or other loud things to release the force of emotions they feel. As parents, seeing your kid go through all that is hurtful, overwhelming and sad. In some cases, parents don’t know the right approach to managing their kid’s anger and end up further damaging the child’s emotional health. You need to understand where that anger is coming from. Teenagers think and try to behave like adults, but they are not adults. They are in the process of becoming adults. The brain development keeps on happening until we complete 25 years on this planet. If you yell back at an angry teenage child, it will only increase the pitch of the issue. An anger outburst in teenagers should be handled in a particular way to defuse the intensity. Your kids are finding themselves in the middle of the outside world and your protection. They need your protection but don’t like to be bossed around. This confusion between dependence and independence turns into angry power plays.

basketball or any other. Encourage your kid to join a class, so he or she can indulge in an activity for a physical release. You can also try to take exercise classes together. This will ensure a physical release and you will get a chance to connect with your child more.

4. Allow and respect his/her privacy

The outcome of any situation with your teenage kid depends on your ability to communicate and take the right actions. This article has 5 tips you can use in that department to obtain positive results.

1. Listen calmly before speaking

You might feel that your kid is acting out for no reason or maybe for the wrong reasons. But do not charge at the child without listening to them. Take some time and patiently hear what your child has to say. An angry teenager wants to let it all out. If you avoid listening, it can further increase their anger. The feeling of avoidance can make your child go overboard with his or her anger. So, your goal in such situations should be to be extra attentive towards your kid and listen before you speak.

2. Find the right time to speak during a heated conversation

When your child is angry, his or her emotional intensity reaches its peak. And that emotional peak doesn’t allow the kid to hear and understand what you say. Even if you talk in their favour, they feel interrupted and get angrier.

The chances of your kid listening and communicating increase when you find the right moment to put across your point. You shouldn’t try to talk during the heated emotional outburst. Let the child say it all and calm down. Sometimes you have to spend the whole heated conversation, simply listening to your child. Then, when you find your kid calmed, you can sit and begin the conversation in a softer manner. The process is easier said than done for sure. You may also feel anger and wish to say everything out loud. The challenge is to hold yourself and relax. The thoughts may have to stay in your mind for a few days before you get a chance to talk to your kid.

3. Make a physical release opportunity available

Mental stress is released with physical activity. Which is why you might see an angry teenager throw stuff, pacing or do other physical activities to release the stress. You can provide a positive opportunity for your child to release from an anger teenager mindset. Find out his or her favorite sport or activity such as running, swimming,

Your child is in the process of becoming an adult. There is a constant urge to acquire freedom and do things as he/she pleases. And you have to respect that! Teens usually don’t prefer their parents walking in their room without knocking. It is their own castle and you can’t barge in. This gives a sense that you are trying to control your kid’s life completely. You don’t want to be perceived as a controller, it should be an image of a protector. For that, you need to respect the boundaries and allow your kid his/her privacy. At the same time, you can make yourself available for your kid’s protection and support.

5. Don’t infantilize your teenage child

Teenagers don’t want their parents to treat them as if they are an infant. In your eyes, they will always little babies. But you can’t forget that your baby has turned into a young child and trying to become a grown boy or girl. If you start babying their every action, it will trigger the anger and thus become angry teenager. Criticizing their actions, trying to teach them every single minute and being in their face all the time. These are the things that create unwanted situations. You can find a quiet, one-on-one time to respectfully inform about something that you don’t agree with.To parent a teenage child, you have to treat them as grownups and protect them as a child. There has to be a perfect balance to avoid heated situations.

357 Confusion Reigns in TM30 Palaver Special report: Expats ‘none the wiser’ after FCCT forum, immigration put on defensive, writes Thana Boonlert Long-term foreign residents of the kingdom have spent the weekend scratching their heads in bewilderment over the baffling requirements of the now notorious TM30 form after a recent forum at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) with senior Thai immigration officials present on the panel. On Thursday evening at the FCCT, foreign expats and guest speakers alike expressed concerns about the lack of clarity and consistency in the application of the TM30 regulation, and the officials said they would do their best to forward the complaints and queries to Immigration Bureau Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Sompong Chingduang. H oweve r, t h e o f f i c i a l s hastened to warn they could neither promise a time frame for which some of the more onerous requirements might be eased or reviewed, or even whether it would happen at all, stressing repeatedly that national security is paramount. On the books for 40 years but not rigorously enforced until March 25 this year, under the 1979 Immigration Act, the TM30 rule requires Thai landlords who provide accommodation to foreigners to report their presence to immigration within 24 hours of their arrival and departure. Long-stayers, including foreign retirees, foreigners married to Thais, and foreigners working in fields providing much-needed expertise, among other categories, must also report their whereabouts within 24 hours under another rule called TM28 when they stay at locations other than their registered primary residence, say when they visit another province, or when they return from overseas trips. According to the officials at the forum, reporting is an “easy” process and can be done in person at local immigration offices, by mail or via online registration and an app, though these assertions were met with murmurs of disbelief by some foreigners at the event who told the Bangkok Post they have waited in queues of up to 300 people, or dealt with an online system and app they insisted does not function properly. What could have been an illtempered event proceeded quite cordially, though at times the terse questions of event moderator, British journalist and past FCCT president Dominic Faulder, may have caught the immigration officials off-guard and put them on the defensive, according to some of the old-hand foreigners present. CRIME PREVENTION Mr. Faulder pointed out that nobody has noticed a particular deterioration in the security situation in Thailand recently “except for some ping pong bombs that had nothing to do with foreigners”. Nevert heless, Pol. Maj . Gen. Patipat Suban Na Ayudhya, commander of Immigration Division 1 and the most senior official at the event, cited national security as the main reason for the strict enforcement of TM30. “A couple of years ago, many cases happened in Thailand. A lot

of terrorists came here and did something not good to my country. We have to use the law [TM30] again. Some people don’t know whether it is legal or illegal to keep foreigners in their residence. “You don’t know whether foreigners at your house are good or bad guys. That is the reason. We try to save you and my country. The first reason is your safety because you don’t know who is a good guy or not,” he said. Nevertheless, offering a glimmer of hope, Patipat added: “We’re going to bring the problems to my commanders when we meet to change the rules for good guys like you. But we don’t know when we will be done. “We try our best to distinguish between the good guys and bad guys. I promise all of you. We try.” Patipat was referring to the “Good guys in, bad guys out” slogan of the Immigration Bureau with respect to Thailand wishing to see the back of criminals, terrorists and other wrongdoers. P o l . C o l . Th a tc h a p o n g Sarawanangkul, superintendent of Immigration Division 1 SubDivision 2, said the TM30 rule aims to curb the opportunity for crimes to be committed by ill-intentioned foreigners in Thailand. “We are not focusing on you [law-abiding foreigners]. We are focusing on those who don’t comply with the law. We can arrest criminals by using this rule. “Criminals don’t want anybody to see them. If you can tell an officer who is staying in your place, I think we can reduce opportunities for offenders to commit crime,” he said. TECHNICAL GLITCHES H i t w i t h a b a r ra g e o f complaints about technical snags with the registration process, Patipat said this might have been caused by the incomplete submission of documents. “I understand your problems with usernames and passwords. We try our best to improve the documents. You didn’t know whether you filled in everything online. That is the reason. You didn’t know if it is complete or not,” he said. Pol. Col. Thatchapong, who said he has to work until past 10:00 p.m. every day in order to cope with the number of TM30 application forms flooding into his divisional office, concluded that filing a TM30 was “really not that hard and it’s easier than telling your wife you’re at home”.

PRACTICAL SOLUTION? Chris Larkin, a director of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and a member of AustCham’s Advocacy Group who was one of the guest speakers, said security concerns are a legitimate matter, but suggested to the immigration officials that qualified foreigners who want to stay in Thailand longer should be given long-term visas rather than a yearly extension. To get this kind of visa, Mr. Larkin proposed that police reports be provided from foreigners’ home countries to reassure Thai immigration. Mr. Larkin also urged Thailand to expand its pink card ID system. “Every Thai citizen has a house book and an ID card. This is an example. The pink ID card registers [its holder’s] name and address, which goes into the government system. It could be made easier for foreigners who stay longer than 90 days in Thailand to get these ID cards, like migrant workers,” he said.

time doing paperwork. Go find the bad guys,” Mr. Larkin said. LAW ‘MUST BE LOGICAL’ Sebastian Brousseau, a Canadian lawyer with permanent residency in Thailand who has organised a petition among expats in the country to “reform Thai immigration” and who was also a guest speaker, insisted to the Thai officials present that the immigration laws “must be logical”. In one of the more heated exchanges of the evening, Mr. Brousseau, responding to comments by Pol. Col. Thatchapong, said: “I’m sick and tired of hearing the law is the law ... TM30 was not enforced before, so basically the law is the law, we gave you some solutions … and you tell me the law is the law. The law must be logical, rational and efficient.” CLARITY & CONSISTENCY Richard Barrow, a Thailandbased blogger and long-term resident who was another one of

“I think this system would be much better. It makes everyone feel they are part of Thailand. You don’t have to reinvent the system because you already do it for 2 million migrant workers.” TOO MUCH PAPERWORK Some of the panelists, including Mr. Larkin, pointed out that the resuscitation of the TM30 rule adds to the already hefty pile of immigration paperwork that expats and other long-stayers must wade their way through. Examples they gave were the TM6 forms when foreigners arrive in Thailand, the TM28 forms concerning short-term travel, and the TM47 forms when they report in their whereabouts to immigration every 90 days. “I think the Immigration Bureau is experiencing problems of too much paperwork. It is a waste of your resources. Don’t waste your

the guest speakers at the forum, called for clarity and consistency by Thai immigration in enforcing the TM30 and TM28 rules. “The landlord has to register foreigners within 24 hours. The problem is the landlord might have 10-15 units. It is a lot of work for them to keep registering foreigners every time they come back from a trip. Sometimes, the landlord is not even in the same city or country,” he said. Mr. Barrow said Thai landlords also have to queue up at Chaeng Watthana [immigration office] to report their presence, greatly inconveniencing them. “Now some apartment blocks are putting up signs saying ‘no foreigners’ because they don’t want the hassle,” he said. Although reporting can be done online, Mr. Barrow said people have experienced difficulties in the registration process because the

system is fraught with software glitches. “It is not working as well as it should do. People who apply online take many weeks before they get usernames and passwords [to access the application system]. “The immigration officers suggest that the online form is the best way of doing it, if it works. My opinion is they should have sorted it first before they started enforcing the law. Once it is sorted, it should be simple and take one or two minutes to register,” he said. Though he suggested that the TM30 rule does not affect the tourism industry, Mr. Barrow conceded that domestic travel and tourism is suffering a downturn because expats are afraid of going away for weekends for fear of having to keep reporting themselves to the authorities on their return under the TM28 rule. “When I asked the immigration officer, his solution was: “Travel Less!” “I am not asking for the TM30 to be abolished. As a guest in this country, I respect and will try to obey the law as much as I can, but all I am asking for is clarity and consistency. “Clarity means we want to understand what is going on because it is very confusing. Consistency means that one immigration office insists that when you go to another province and come back, you should do the TM30 whereas the other says don’t worry about it,” he said. ‘NONE THE WISER’ As the forum drew to a close, some of the attendees expressed frustration that many of their questions had gone unanswered and that little progress seemed to have been achieved with the meeting of minds, while others continued to gripe about the inefficiency of the online TM30 system. Paul Williams, 73, an urban transport planner from the UK, complained about the online form registration. “I tried to comply and twice applied online. I think I have sent all the documents. One was two months ago. One was a month ago. I’ve had no response,” he complained. An elderly American man, resident in Thailand for more than 20 years and who asked not to be named for fear of recrimination from the immigration authorities, said: “I’m as confused at the end of this as I was at the start. I still don’t know for sure what documents I need to produce to do this TM30 thing and when I need to do it.” Another long-term resident from Australia, who also declined to be named, said: “I’ve been here for hours listening to these lots. It’s very frustrating and I’m none the wiser.” A British woman who said she had been resident in Thailand for more than 10 years, struck a more conciliatory tone, but still insisted on maintaining anonymity. “Well, at least they [the immigration officials] turned up and listened. I hadn’t been expecting them to. Maybe they’ll go back to HQ and tell their bosses there’s a serious problem here [with TM30],” she said. Source: Bangkok Post HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

10 38 Stars Align… Thanks to Lizzy Sometimes when the ‘Stars Align’ there’s an amazing outcome. In this case the ‘Stars’ were Hua Hin’s Multi-Culture Club legend and Rotarian Ms. Lizzy Ginsel, the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin, Petchaburi’s Ratprachnukhoh School and Stamford International University. The result was a ‘dream come true’ for two young ladies who had few opportunities in life, can now look forward to a future boosted by tertiary education scholarships. Ms. Lizzy, who is well known as Hua Hin’s socialite and has been organising Multi-Culture Club charity events for at least the past five years. Some may have wondered what Lizzy had meant by these funds benefitting ‘the university fund,’ and now, everything is revealed.

Lizzy has long been a close friend of the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and has recently joined becoming a Rotarian in her own right. With her health as a concern and a significant amount of money on hand, it was time to talk with the RCRHH to manage these charity funds. This idea resulted in Rotarian and Stamford Director of the Stamford Student Centre, Ms. Benjamas Uamsa-ard contacting the Principal of Ratprachnukhoh (47) School. Very soon two young ladies who had recently graduated from the school emerged as very deserving recipients for university scholarships. The RCRHH’s Board then agreed to give the opportunity to the nominees with President Napa Keawtem interviewing the pair.

C o i n c i d e n t a l l y, R o t a r y Members from Stamford had already been assisting this very special school with activities to support their students who all come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. After graduating with academic distinction from the school, the two students concerned, Dee Dee Kosin and Kwanthip Phutdee, had been fending for themselves earning meager income working as veterinary assistants but also sending the majority of their income home to support their families. It has been a tough life with little respite in sight. A university education was far beyond their reach – that is until the ‘Stars’ came into alignment. Now with the payment of 700,000 THB from the MCC Charity Funds

into Rotary’s stewardship, they will begin attending Stamford every Sunday as well as continuing their employment on the other 5 or 6 days a week. In another 3 ½ years, they should graduate with a bachelor of business studies and a real future. B o t h yo u n g l a d i e s s ay working as a teacher is their goal, but as Rotary President Khun Napa pointed out, the only mentoring and positive role models they have experienced so far have been from that profession including the most significant of these supporters, Ms. Kaneungnij Phumpuang, School Counselor. Perhaps with a broader outlook on life, that could all change. The official presentation of the scholarships at Stamford

was attended by all the ‘Stars’, with not a dry eye in the house. The two recipients’ emotional responses to this dramatic change in their fortunes included heartfelt promises to honour a commitment to their education. After their demonstrated determination in life already beyond reproach, that’s a commitment that’s not in doubt. Dee Dee and Kwanthip began their studies in earnest over the weekend at Stamford International University and hit the ground running. A great result for Lizzy personally, MCC and the RCRHH, congratulations to all the ‘Stars’ involved and very best of wishes to Dee Dee and Kwanthip for their most promising future!

Who Really Are the Region’s Top Amateur Golfers?

That’s a question that a new event on our busy golfing calendar; the Evason Hua Hin Masters just might answer. This will be an amateur event at two of our best golf courses; Springfield Royal Country Club and Banyan Golf Club. Siam PGG’s Andy Harris is the event organiser and he says “There are many Amateur Golf Events held in Hua Hin annually. None feature an amateur event at the two of the top courses for the top male and female amateur golfers in Thailand”. Siam PGA Holidays are the founders and organisers of the most prestigious Amateur Pairs Event in Thailand – The InterContinental Pairs Classic. They believe there is space for an outstanding amateur event for competitive low handicap and higher handicap golfers alike that will crown a Hua Hin Amateur Champion for both Men and Ladies. The format will be 36 Holes stroke-play Gross and Net Championship. There will be a men’s and ladies division with 18 holes at Springfield and Banyan GC on the weekend of October 5th and 6th with practice rounds HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

available on Friday an evening welcome reception and a prize giving luncheon after the second round. Top Prizes include: 3 nights stay in Evason in Nha Trang, Vietnam & 2 Nights Pool Villa in Evason, Hua Hin. It is anticipated that the event will attract the best golfers not only from Hua Hin and the region but from other areas of Thailand and SE Asia. The goal is to build it into a prestigious annual event much like the Intercon Pairs has become. The main sponsor is the Evason Resort Hua Hin with stay and play packages for visiting golfers. Evason General Manager Alan will also be a strong contender as the current Hyatt Open Champion. A l t h o u g h v i s i t i n g g o l fe r s a re always welcome competitors to regional competition, our money is on locals taking the crown as the Evason Masters champions and a claim to be the Royal Coast’s top amateur golfers. 12 40 Things You Should Know Before Playing Golf; But Never Too Late To Learn

“IF only I’d known then what I know now.” It’s a common lament that is as applicable to the complex game of golf as it is to life. The ride could’ve been a lot smoother, and hence happier had you known a few things about golf before starting to play. But even years into a golfing journey it’s never too late to take stock of some important principles. A pro can fix your swing better than your friend can

If you are a golfer who always wanted to play from the back tees, it may be much fun to rethink that idea especially if you’re not at the top of your game. After playing from the very front tees you may find a more interesting and cerebral round of golf.

You never hit the ball as far as you think you do One thing that has come out of golf GPS tracking software is that most golfers don’t hit the ball as far as they think they do. On average we are probably hitting the ball about a halfclub less than we think we are. But this is tough information to swallow and even if you’d known this year’s ago, it’s hard not to stay in denial.

Forget about the back tees

Avoid the headache and drink water Just because your mate read a swing tip in a golf magazine on the weekend, doesn’t mean it will fix your swing. Think about this each time you read a golf tip in a golf magazine.

A pre-shot routine is not just for the professionals

Don’t think that a headache is normal after a round of golf; it isn’t if you’ve had enough water to drink. A sip here and there doesn’t cut it. Drink plenty of water. And while you’re at it, sun cream; wear it and reapply after nine holes. Just do it.

You need to be able to putt straight

Stay fit and flexible

Having a pre-shot routine isn’t just for the pros. It’s a boring aspect of golf, but if you want to get better and creep up on the elusive world of consistent golf then you need to have a consistent pre-shot routine. Just make sure it’s quick.

Putting from off the green

Even if you’re the world’s best at reading greens you need to be able putt the ball along that line. If you can’t putt the ball straight over a perfectly flat surface, then practice. It’s an easy drill that can be done at home.

This is not so important in your 20s but it’s hugely important to stay on top of this before your shoulder turn gets a little shorter, or that follow through starts to creak. By all means stretch before a round but also stay fit and healthy in between rounds too.

Many have this false belief that if you’re just off the green then you should be a good enough golfer to execute the perfect chip shot. The fact is that there are many lies around the green when a putter will do just fine.

Golf should always be fun or at least engaging. If it’s not, don’t be afraid to put the clubs away for a while. It may be just the break you need to save yourself, and your playing partners, from a few unpleasant days on the golf course. Golf is a game you can play well into your later years of life, make sure you’re fit enough to be doing it and always remember what you need to know.

Dusit Thani Hua Hin has a new Dining Experience every Wednesday night

The majestic Dusit Thani Hua Hin, known for its fine dining and high levels of service, has launched a new dining experience: Med on Wed: Mediterranean on Wednesdays. The concept has been developed by Chef Sam, Executive Chef of Dusit Thani Hua Hin to bring Mediterranean flavours to the San Marco Restaurant which every other night features authentic Italian specialities. But this dining experience is in 3 parts; the cold cut buffet and salad bar, an à la carte selection for mains and your choice of two desserts. This allows diners to choose only the options they desire. They may choose to dine only from the buffet and salad bar, add

on a main course or go with all three courses. As you approach the alfresco style dining room, alongside the stunning light and water feature, you are confronted with the cold cut buffet and salad bar which is stocked full of tasty Mediterranean food raging from Italian salamis and hams to Spanish roasted peppers and vegetables. You can start with the soup, which changes weekly, choose one of the pre-made salads like a potato salad, or a frittata. There is also a large choice of “design your own” salad ingredients and dressings. Grab some freshly baked bread with either a crumbled feta or a tomato spread to complete this course.

If you want to continue take things a step further, you can choose your main course from the menu. This menu changes regularly, as it’s about using seasonal ingredients, as well as giving repeat diners a great reason to come back. Menu options will always have a “pasta of the night”, a beef and pork option, plus one or two seafood dishes. One of the most popular dishes is the seafood linguine with a delicious seafood bisque; there is also the herbed pork involtini with Parma ham, served with a red wine sauce. The beef options are also extremely popular, like the beef tenderloin rolled in mushrooms, served with crispy roasted potatoes and vegetables and a creamy peppercorn sauce. Then if you still have room, there are two desserts to choose from like a strawberry sundae or an oozy chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Chef Sam is

all about flavour, choosing the best seasonal ingredients he can. Where possible, he strives to obtain locally grown, organically farmed produce. The bonus is that this way of presenting the menu means guests can choose what they would like and the main course is made to order; which ensures the ingredients are cooked and served at their very best. Choose a wine from the list and dine away, Dusit Thani Hua Hin style. 2 46 CloudKitchens Trend CouldKitchens is a new concept in restaurants/minikitchens which only cater to online food delivery orders. There are no dine-in or customer take-out options; just online order delivery. As celebrity chef Eric Greenspan said in a new documentary about CloudKitchens, “Delivery is the fastest growing market in restaurants. What started out as 10% of your sales is now 30% of your sales, he said. “The industry predicts it is going to be 50 to 60% of a quickserve restaurant’s sales within the next three to five years. So you take that, plus the fact that quickserve brands are kind of the key to getting a fat payout at the end of the day…” E a r l i e r t h i s ye a r, U b e r cofou nd er, Trav is Kal ani ck , announced that he had invested over $100 million in a startup called City Storage Systems, that focused

on repurposing distressed real estate assets and turning them into spaces for new industries such as food delivery. This company owns CloudKitchens. The concept is that food chains, independent restaurants and food truck owners are invited to lease spaces for a monthly fee; they are also charged additional fees for data analytics. The pitch is that using CludKitchens can potentially increase their sales whilst reducing their overheads. The company is also accumulating all sorts of data about their tenants and customers; this data will prove invaluable to CloudKitchens. Although shared kitchens have been optimistically received as a potential pathway for food entrepreneurs to launch and grow their businesses, particularly as more people turn to take out, there are many downsides that may well outweigh the positives; or at the very least counteract them. Last year, for example, UBS wrote a note to their clients titled “Is the kitchen dead?”, wherein it suggested the rise of food delivery apps like Deliveroo and Uber Eats could well prove ruinous for home cooks, as well as restaurants and supermarkets. “The cloud kitchen brews a storm for local restaurants”, said renowned VC Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital. Moritz begins by pointing to the runaway success of Deliveroo,

the London-based delivery service that relies on low-paid, self-employed delivery riders who deliver local restaurant food to customers, including from shared kitchens that Deliveroo itself operates, including in London and Paris. He believes that Amazon’s recent investment in the company “might just foreshadow the day when the company, once just known as the world’s largest bookseller, also becomes the world’s largest restaurant company.”

What is a Cloud Kitchen? The term Cloud itself refers to online, in the technological sense. It basically means any kitchen that runs solely to fulfill online orders. To take that a step further, a cloud kitchen is any restaurant that has only the kitchen without any dine-in or takeaway facility. The other terms are also used in place of coud kitchen; Delivery Kitchen and Ghost Kitchen. The business model for a cloud kitchen is also vastly different from that of any regular restaurant. 517 Size Really Doesn’t Matter Known for its medicinal properties, Carissa Carandas is rich in Iron, vitamins A & C, as well Calcium & Phosphorous. It can be used to treat ailments like indigestion, stomach pain and constipation; the fruit and a paste made from the leaves can also be used in the treatment of infected wounds or skin diseases. The leaves can be used to treat diarrhea and reduce fever. The roots are used as an anthelmintic medicine for itches and may be used as an insect repellent.[3]

Many fruits have undeservedly been dubbed as Super Foods. This little dynamo really earns the moniker. They say big things come in small packages and from May through to September in markets all over Thailand, you will see the beautiful fruit, Carissa Carandas, Manao Hor in Thai (มะนาวโห่) Almost too beautiful to eat, the tiny berries are simply delicious and packed full of nutrients and other healthenhancing properties. The Carissa Carandas has white to red fruit the size of berries. The plant itself is a sort of straggly shrub, with little appeal to the eye. As a rapidly growing shrub, it is droughtresistant and thrives well in a wide range of soils, making it perfect to be grown in and around Hua Hin.

Simply everything from this plant can be used in traditional medicine, including the leaves, stems and the white, unripe fruit. This supercharged fruit is high in antioxidants, with the fully-ripe red fruits being a good source of Anthocyanin; the unripe fruits are a great source of vitamin C. Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid; a class of compounds with antioxidant effects. Found naturally in a number of foods like berries, grapes and tomatoes, anthocyanins are the pigments that give red, purple and blue plants their rich coloring. In addition to acting as antioxidants and fighting free radicals, anthocyanins may offer antiinflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits.[1] Anthocyanins may enhance heart health, according to a 2010 report published in Nutrition Reviews. The report’s

authors note that anthocyanins appear to improve cholesterol levels and blood sugar metabolism, as well as fight oxidative stress (a process known to play a role in heart disease).[1] Dietary intake of anthocyanins may also help prevent high blood pressure (a major risk factor for heart disease), according to a 2011 study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.[1] The fruit is used in the ancient Indian holistic system of medicine known as Ayurveda. Ayurvedic medicine; Ayurveda” for short, is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India.[2] It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments may be geared toward specific health problems. [2]

The fruit can be eaten raw or the unripe, sour fruit can be made into pickles and chutneys. In and around India, it is widely used for chutneys to compliment curries and other dishes. Here in Thailand, you will commonly see the ripe Manao Hor used in jams, or taken to the next stage as sweet, yet sticky and sour sweets and jellies. When pressed, the juice has a slightly bitter sweet taste and is said to improve appetite and digestion. The juice has the deep red colour of Cabernet Sauvignon and has a slight wine taste to it, which works a treat with a splash of soda water. Some inventive cooks remove the skin and seeds, cook them down and put them into tarts; once mixed with apples, some sugar and cloves, they make for a deliciously sweet pie. Hua Hin’s station

54

Hua Hin’s popularity began to increase in the 1920’s as the railway line from Bangkok was constructed and King Rama VI built Klai Kangwon Palace as a summer retreat.

Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin Wat Huay Mongkol Hua Hin--this Buddhist temple is home to the world’s largest statue of Luang Phor Thuad, a legendary southern Thai monk revered for his enlightenment and ability to perform miracles. Many believe that the amulets created in his image guarantee safety in times of distress. The statue, set within a park-like setting that attracts many visitors each weekend, was commissioned by HM Queen Sirikit and is the first thing you see when approaching Hua Hin from Highway 4 (heading to Prachuab Kirikhand).

Hua Hin’s station is one of the oldest in Thailand and its main feature is The Royal Waiting Room that used to welcome King and his court when they were visiting the town. Originally, it was situated at Sanamchan Palace in Nakom Pathom and was known as Plub Pla Sanamchan. Eventually, the room was tranported to Hua Hin. It is designed in the same style as Maruekkhathayawan Palace and is an attraction not to be missed if you are staying in Hua Hin. The train station is located at the top (west end) of Damnoern Kasem Road.

Local golfers are often asked by newcomers or visitors what are the best regional golf courses to play. That’s not an easy question to answer; golf course conditions change as well as facilities and costs. Thus, our recommendation for golfers to visit during the period “Hua Hin & Cha-am Golf Festival 2019” is Majestic Creek Golf Club & Resort. Majestic Creek Golf Club Hua Hin & Resort is one of the most favourite golf courses among local golfers. The layout is criss-crossed by natural streams that add to the challenge, and indeed, the beauty of the course. It’s suitable for golfers of all levels, but low handicappers will enjoy the difficulty presented by several large water hazards. Majestic Creek Golf Club has been cut through the original jungle and follows the natural contours of the land, while this verdant landscape may not be as well-manicured as some of the other courses in Hua Hin, it nevertheless gives it a lovely natural feel. Most holes have water hazards, as well as excellent bunkering, which rewards precise shots. All visitors are welcome to come and play and why not make Majestic Creek your holiday base? Our up and coming ‘Stay and Play’ deals and long stay packages will be unbelievable value for money, so check them out and start planning your golfing break in this Golfer’s Paradise. Please call +66 (0)81-942-3619, email bookings@majesticcreekcc.com, or browse our website: www. majesticcreekcc.com to reserve for Green Fee. There will be a very warm welcome for you here at the Majestic Creek Golf Club and Resort and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan With a breezy seaside location 12km north of Hua Hin, this summer palace – Phra Ratchaniwet Mrigadayavan – was built in 1924 during the reign of Rama VI. Set in a beautiful garden with statuesque trees and stunning sea views, it’s a series of 18 interlinked teak buildings with tall, shuttered windows and patterned fretwork built upon stilts. The functional but elegant style of the palace was a result of Rama VI suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; the court’s Italian architect designed it to maximise air circulation and make the most of the seaside location. A slow-motion renovation means there will be no interior access for many years (access may not resume even after the renovation is finished, but this is still uncertain), which is unfortunate, but it’s lovely on the outside too and still worth a visit. There’s also a nature trail here.

HUA HIN TODAY, September 2019

The palace is within the grounds of Camp Rama VI, a military base. It’s easiest to get here with private transport but you can also catch a Hua Hin–Cha-am bus and ask to be dropped off at the camp’s front gate. As this is a royal palace, legs and arms must be covered, otherwise you’ll have to pay 20B to wear a sarong.
