THE

E XEC H

ello, and a big welcome to Huddersfield from your Students’ Union Executive Officers.

The Students’ Union is led by students, for students and everything we do is to make your student life better. We have all been students at Huddersfield and collectively we have gone through most of the same experiences you will be going through, so don’t panic we’ve all been there.

6

The SU Exec Team is made up of five full time officers that have taken a year out to lead the Students’ Union. Our team is made up of the President and four Vice Presidents, and together we represent your views to the University and wider community. Over the coming year we have lots of great things in store for you and we hope that you come along and get involved in the great activities that the Students’ Union runs for you.

JOSH ELDERFIELD SU PRESIDENT

H

i I’m Josh and I’m your Students’ Union President for the 2014/15 academic year. I’m originally from Kent and have been living in the wonderful Huddersfield for four years now. At 5’ 2”, it’s usually either really easy to spot me or really difficult - so if you ever need help from myself you’ll no doubt find me somewhere in Student Central. I pretty much live there! I got involved in the Students’ Union almost as soon as I arrived on campus. I engaged with the Union first through sport, and the joined the Men’s Football team as a club journalist – this paved the way for my constant involvement with the SU. I founded and led the Athletics Club in my first year too, and this has been a huge honour – not least because we competed in the Olympic Stadium in the club’s first year at the BUCS Championships and came away with a medal! I then got involved in the political aspect of the Union, and was a Union Councillor and NUS Delegate before standing last year for VP Education. My role is to listen and to represent the views of all students. If there is something that you’re not happy with and you want changed or if there is something that doesn’t already exist that you think we in the Students’ Union should be lobbying for, don’t hesitate to get in touch with myself or one of the other Exec Officers in my team, we’re here to help.

COCO TOMA

MIKE MCGOUGAN

VP COMMUNICATION & DEMOCRACY

VP EDUCATION

M

y name is Coco, and I am your Vice President for Communication & Democracy here at Huddersfield Students’ Union. I am a European student and was born in ITALIIIIIIIAAA, on the outskirts of Milan. Italia, Mamma Mia, the country of blissful landscapes, the cool Vespa Piaggio, fashion and the land of beautiful food like tasty mozzarella di bufala pizza, si si. I grew up there, and left in 2010 to read music journalism. My role focuses on making sure that you know what the Students’ Union is doing and can get involved in it as well. I oversee student media, such as our radio station and magazine, and the democratic side of the union, including elections and Union Council.

8

@COCOTTOMA

H

i, I’m Michael McGougan and I am your Vice President Education for the 2014/15 academic year. I am originally from the correct side of the Pennines, hailing from the best city in the world - Manchester. That being said I rarely go back and I have lived in Huddersfield now for five years which makes me the old man of the Exec Team. It’s a funny old town that I’ve fallen in love with and found it very difficult to escape, studying both my Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees here. In the up and coming academic year I have set my goals very high. I hope to focus on a number of projects that make student life here at Huddersfield better for you. This includes setting up an innovation education conference, increasing work placements across the university and an increase in education scholarship funds.

@MMCGOUGAN90

ALYSIA FORD

JORDAN AIRD

VP WELLBEING & EQUALITIES

VP STUDENT ACTIVITIES

I

’m Alysia Ford, your Vice President Wellbeing & Equalities for this coming year. I’m originally from Birmingham and yes, I do support the best team in the Midlands Birmingham City! I’ve just finished my psychology undergraduate and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, but for me, university has been more than just academia. I am the scrum half in the Ladies Rugby Union team and a pole dancer too. An unusual combination I know and if you’re thinking it, no I cannot read minds; I know I don’t look like a rugby player; and no I will not... This role to me means the world and I cannot begin to express the buzz I get from knowing I am in a position to help you. For me, life hasn’t always been smooth and without wanting to sound too cliché, I want to harness the difficult times and give something back.

@ALYSIAFORD

H

i I’m Jordan, your Vice President Student Activities this year. My involvement with the Students’ Union came from joining the University Football Club during my first year. Through joining the football club I was able to meet a variety of different people from different backgrounds and over the years I have developed majorly on a personal level. Student Activities provide various different avenues into the Students’ Union, not only through the many sports clubs and societies, but also through events like Freshers’ Festival and activities such as volunteering. Over the next year I’ll be focussing on various key projects designed at developing our activity groups, widening participation across campus and organising several events for students to look forward to.

SOCIETIES

G

ot a hobby that you’re really passionate about? Well there’s probably a society that caters for that. From academic based groups to video gaming and hitchhiking, there’s something for everyone. And if the thing you’re interested in doesn’t have a society you can easily set up your own. Bring on the Tea Appreciation Society (it doesn’t exist... Yet)! Societies offer the perfect opportunity for you to meet likeminded people, enhance your employability, and most importantly to have fun.

RAG Our Raise and Give (RAG) Society is here to raise money for local, national and international charities. They make fundraising fun by bringing you a variety of events like bake sales, sponsored leg waxes, abseiling and more. RAG also supports any groups and individuals wanting to raise money for good causes. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced fundraiser or you’ve never shaken the bucket, get involved and they will help you make the most out of it.

T’Hud magazine is the University of Huddersfield’s student publication. Run and edited entirely by students, they focus on reporting about student life, news and more. They publish a 40-page magazine each academic month that is distributed across campus and have a regularly updated website.

10

Radio Hud is the voice of student radio on campus. Broadcasting online from their dedicated studio in the Students’ Union, they offer a wide range of shows and lots of opportunities for students to get involved. These include hosting your own show, producing, editing and loads more.

FRESHERS.HUDDERSFIELD.SU

Hud TV is a brand new student-led television station that is starting this year. They aim to produce a wide variety of content and will broadcast their shows online. This is a great platform for getting your face in front of the camera or brushing up on your production skills.

VOLUNTEERING Make sure volunteering isn’t something you miss out on while you’re at University. Here at the Students’ Union we have a variety of exciting ways you can get involved. From HarvestHud, where we grow our own fruit and veg to donate to the local foodbank, to Knitter Natter, where we knit and natter with local older day residents at a nearby Age UK centre, we have something to suit everyone.

ONE-OFF VOLUNTEERING If volunteering as a one-off suits you better make sure you check out our Students at the Heart of Hud events. Students at the Heart of Hud happens twice a year and is an actionpacked day where you get to choose one volunteering opportunity from a choice of five to get involved in for the day. Opportunities can range from tidying a local churchyard, painting a local community centre to organising crafts and sporting activities with kids.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING If these opportunities still aren’t enough for you, we also offer an online service where we host a whole directory full of opportunities with external charities that you can browse through and sign up to.

WHY VOLUNTEER? Volunteering has massive benefits not only is it fun and rewarding but it helps you develop your skills, your experiences and increases your chances of securing that dream job once you graduate! You can find out more about all of our volunteering opportunities online. We are always more than happy to meet you too, should you have a query please visit us at the SU or contact us at volunteering@hud.ac.uk.

SPORT

K

eeping fit and healthy is key to your survival at University. Thankfully there’s a whole host of student-led sports clubs for you to get stuck into, be it at a competitive level or recreationally. The Students’ Union is home to all of the University sports clubs such as , Netball, Fencing and even Wing Chun Kung Fu. They compete across a range of regional and national leagues so you’ll get the chance to represent the University in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) and if you’re good enough, you might even earn a call up to the Great Britain University Squad. It’s not just about reaching the top though; a key part of university life is challenging yourself to try new things. Never played Handball before? So what? Go down and get involved! Even if you’re not brilliant at sport, our clubs are very welcoming and accept members of all abilities. A massive bonus to joining a sports club is the social side. You’ll make lots of new friends and have the opportunity to do plenty of social based events.

VARSITY Varsity is the Students’ Union’s biggest annual sports competition against local rivals Bradford. The event involves more than 2000 students from the two Universities going head-to-head both on and off the pitch. The first Varsity between Huddersfield and Bradford took place in 1988 and has continued to go from strength-to-strength ever since. The event itself has evolved over the years to allow for more sports to be included and to accommodate the ever growing interest from spectators. The principles however

remain very much the same. The format of the contest - 20+ matches played across at least 16 sports for one point each - very much instils the ethos of Varsity which is all about team work, good sportsmanship and pride in the University you are from. The current holders of the cup are the University of Bradford, who recorded their first win in four years in a closely fought victory in 2014 (12-10). In 2015 the competition will return to Huddersfield as we look to reclaim the cup!

T

he Students’ Union is a charity based on campus that is run by students for students. Its sole purpose is to make student life better for students at the University. We’re funded in large part by the University but they’re also a completely autonomous organisation. Why does that matter? It means that you have an independent voice on campus that is only concerned with your interests. We’re led by five students, elected annually to serve one paid year as either President or as one of four Vice Presidents. Collectively they’re known as the Executive Committee and they spend a lot of time talking to the University to fight on the issues you care about.

VOLUNTEERING Getting involved in extracurricular activities outside of the lecture theatre is a great way to boost your employability, meet new friends, and have some fun. But it’s also a way of giving something back to the local community and contributing to wider society. Nowhere is this more evident than in the huge amount of volunteering

16

FRESHERS.HUDDERSFIELD.SU

opportunities the SU provides students to get involved in. We run a host of student volunteering projects, from our allotment that grows produce for a local food bank (HarvestHud), to Knitter Knatter - a befriending scheme between students and older people in the local area. We also run a brokerage service via their website with hundreds of opportunities specific to students.

GET INVOLVED

ADVICE

Make the most of your University experience and get involved with the Students’ Union. Join a sports team, society or student media, run for election, volunteer with HudHarvest and campaign on issues that matter to you!

SPORTS & SOCIETIES At the heart of the Union are numerous sports clubs and societies. These are funded and supported by the SU, but are each led by a committee of students elected from their members. This gives students the opportunity to step up and take on leadership roles outside of their studies, and ensures that clubs and societies deliver what student members want.

While the majority of students make it through their University experience without any significant problems, there are times when things can get a little bit much. To combat this, we run a comprehensive Student Advice Centre which offers free, confidential and impartial advice on a range of matters such as: »»Academic issues – for example helping students in accusations of plagiarism and collusion. »»Housing issues – for example helping students when landlords are clearly not fulfilling the terms of their contract. »»Financial issues – for example helping students get the funding their entitled to.

CAMPAIGN A key aspect of the Union is our role as a campaigning organisation – fighting for things like lower fees, higher bursaries and more pastoral support for students. Over the course of the year we run loads of campaigns aimed at making student life better – from improving the quality of student housing, to reducing the additional costs associated with your degree, to making sure you’re clued up for assessments and exams.

Our advisers will talk students through their options, and help them explore what their next steps might be. They can also represent students and attend important meetings with them, such as progress hearings and assessment appeals. The service is completely non-judgemental and considers only the interests of the student involved.

@HUDDERSFIELDSU

17

VOICE At the core of everything that we do is a simple yet powerful idea: we are led for students, by students. But we can’t do any of this without you getting involved, standing for election, and representing your fellow classmates. There are loads of different ways to participate, which means no matter how much time you’ve got to give, there’s definitely something for you.

STAND FOR AN EXEC OFFICER POSITION

STAND FOR UNION COUNCIL

These five positions are elected in the spring term of each year, and spend a year out of their degree working full time, paid, in the Students’ Union. Each role takes a specific portfolio – President, Education, Student Activities, Equalities & Wellbeing, and Communications & Democracy – and sits as a Trustee of the SU. They’re responsible for the day to day leadership of the Union, finding out what students think about key issues, and fighting to make student life better. They also act as the collective voice of Huddersfield students when negotiating with the University and local community.

These are elected in the autumn term of each year to represent students within the Union, and make sure they’re focusing on the issues you want them to focus on. Councillors are paid a small honorarium each term, and get involved in things like focus groups, campaigns and supporting the Executive Officer team in their work. They’re crucial to making sure the Students’ Union really is by students.

STAND FOR NUS DELEGATE These are elected in the autumn term of each year to represent Huddersfield students at the annual NUS (National Union of Students) Conference – held in March. It’s an opportunity to get things on the agenda that are relevant to your fellow students, and make sure your national organisation is fighting for your interests.

18

FRESHERS.HUDDERSFIELD.SU

BECOME A COURSE REP These are elected in the autumn term of each year to work with the University and SU to improve the academic experience of students at Huddersfield. This includes things like representing students on key committees, making suggestions on different types of assessment that staff should use on your modules, or looking at ways the library can better support independent study. It’s an opportunity to have a real impact on the lives of your fellow classmates, and to gain some valuable experience that will serve you well after graduation.

HUDLETS HudLets is a lettings agency run by the Students’ Union for all students at the University of Huddersfield. It works with halls of residences, private landlords and a selection of other agencies to ensure students have access to high quality accommodation at a fair price during their studies. As an agency owned and run entirely by the Students’ Union, it’s committed to providing the best quality of service to their members. This offer is characterised by five key points.

TOP TEN TIPS FROM ALYSIA’S* MUM 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Make sure someone always knows where you are. Let your housemates know if you go out. Don’t leave your drink unattended on a night out; you can always buy another one with the drinks prices in Huddersfield! Always have £10 in your purse/wallet for emergencies, and no, that 3am takeaway is not covered by this. Make sure you always have your phone on you wherever you go. You never know when you’ll need to contact someone. Make sure you always have dry food in for when things get desperate, when you’re snowed in, you’ve run out of money or when you are just too hungover. You’ll be thanking your sensible self later. Be open minded to opportunities. Try something new and different - you never know you might love it! Push yourself and go to all your lectures. If this fails make sure you get a friends notes and you take time to go through them!

8.

There is more to University than just the academia, it’s a life experience and one which you may never experience again, so make the most of it. Have fun!

9.

Always have a surplus of toilet paper. You don’t want to be left stranded. Besides it has number of uses, double it up as kitchen roll or make Christmas decorations out of the cardboard.

10.

And last but not least, don’t forget your family is always on the end of the phone irrelevant of the time, or how ridiculous it sounds! After all that is what they’re there for.

CAMPUS FOLKLORE So you’ve pitched up in Huddersfield and you’re getting settled in but how’s your local history? Test yourself and see if you can spot the red herrings in our campus folklore.

ONE. SEVEN.

The paving stones on the plaza are uneven due to the fact that the University sits on top of an active geological formation and from time to time we have minor earthquakes that shift the stones.

In case of an emergency there is an underground bunker in Student Central that can house 30 people; it also has four week’s worth of food.

TWO.

A man dressed as a parrot came 2nd in the election for President in 2001.

The outer wall of the Sports Hall had to have perforated cladding added to it due to consistently high winds that caused a wind tunnel effect along the east side of the University.

THREE.

The University once had a swimming pool; it’s now called the Harold Wilson Building.

EIGHT. NINE.

St. Paul’s was the first place in the North of England to hold a graduation ceremony.

TEN.

The University can actually trace its roots back to 1825.

FOUR. ELEVEN.

Pub names are commonly reused across the country but the first ever recorded use of ‘The White Lion’ was by an old tavern located on the site of Student Central.

The Ramsden Building is named after Huddersfield’s first student, Harry Ramsden. Harry was the founder of Harry Ramsden fish and chip shops.

FIVE. TWELVE. The small railway outside the Research

The University is built on the site of the first Battle of Huddersfield, which took place in 1069.

SIX.

There is a secret room in the Technology Building that can only be accessed when the right sequence of doors are opened.

Downton Abbey actor, Rob James-Collier, studied business at the University.

The Milton Building was once the home of the Students’ Union.

Every four years all University of Huddersfield students receive an honorary stick of rhubarb. The tradition began in 1832 after the Huddersfield rhubarb triangle was formally recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The Executive Lift in the Central Service Building can only be accessed with the correct 5 digit security code; it’s only given to University Senior Management and the Students’ Union President.

EIGHTEEN.

In 2007 the University hosted its own version of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’; the winners were a pair of English Lecturers who danced a fantastic tango.

NINETEEN.

32 members of the University’s drama department were extras in X-Men: Days of Future Past, after chancellor Sir Patrick Stewart was impressed by their performance in the annual production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

TOP TIP Don’t bother buying kitchen appliances straight away or you’ll end up with 6 kettles. If your communal area doesn’t already come with one, you can all pitch in and split the cost. Also, don’t spend to much on them, as you don’t want to end up fighting about who gets to keep it when you all leave. Don’t bring anything too precious, like family heirlooms, no matter how much you think you can look after your stuff, you don't know who you will be living with.

MAKING CHANGE One of the amazing things about Huddersfield Students’ Union is that we’re member-led. This means students have the right to the change things and directly influence how we go about making student life better. There are four easy steps in this process. FINDING OUT ABOUT YOUR ISSUE Firstly, you need to have a clear understanding of your issue, and what you want to change. Go out and talk to other students, this could be course reps, societies or your friends. Ask them whether it affects them too. Do they think your solution is a good one? If you get a positive response and think it’s something the Union can realistically change, then it’s time to put your idea on to paper. SUBMITTING A MOTION TO UNION COUNCIL Once you’ve submitted your idea onto the agenda of Union Council, it’ll be debated and discussed by a group of student representatives called Union Councillors.

PUTTING YOUR IDEA INTO ACTION After this meeting has taken place, it then becomes the responsibility of the Union to work to implement your idea. Sometimes this means Exec Officers working with our permanent staff team to deliver something, but often it means getting a group of students together and working on a long term plan. HOLDING YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO ACCOUNT After a suitable amount of time has passed you’ll be able to ask the Exec Officers and Union Councillors about what progress has been made on the issue. They’ll be able to give you an update on what’s happened: but remember, as a membership organisation, it’s also up to you to make sure change happens. We’re only as strong as our members.

They’re all directly elected by students, and their job is to consider the issue from lots of different perspectives. If the idea gets a majority in favour, it passes and becomes official Union policy.

FRESHERS’ FAQS CAN I GET ANY HELP WITH HEALTH COSTS? Students are not automatically eligible for help with health costs, for example prescriptions or dental treatment. There are certain situations when you may be entitled to help but for most students they will need to apply to see if they are eligible under the NHS Low Income Scheme. To apply you can pick up an application form (HC1) and the guidance notes from the Students’ Union Advice Centre. The application will be subject to an income assessment.

The Students’ Union Advice Centre has a phone that students can use to contact Student Finance England. It is available during the Centre’s opening hours. At certain times in the year it can be busy so you may have to wait a short time before it is available. CAN I PARK ON THE CAMPUS? Parking on campus is only available to students with disabilities and even this is limited. For further information please contact Disability Services on 01484 473724 or email disability@hud.ac.uk

WHERE CAN I GET A COUNCIL TAX EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE? During enrolment you will be able to ask for a Council Tax Exemption Certificate from the iPOINT in Student Central. For more information on eligibility, visit the University’s website at: www.hud.ac.uk/student-support-desk/ I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY ACCOMMODATION/LANDLORD, WHO CAN I SPEAK TO FOR HELP?

There are other places to park around the town centre. You can find more details by visiting Kirklees Council’s website.

STUDENTS’ UNION ADVICE CENTRE

The Students’ Union Advice Centre advisers can provide information and guidance on a wide range of housing related issues. They are based on level 5 of Student Central and students can call in, telephone or email them to arrange an appointment.
