A YEAR IN REVIEW
A
S THE NEW YEAR approaches, I cannot believe it’s already time for me to draft my last letter for 2014. While I am constantly thinking about future plans, I rarely take a moment to reflect on our past success. HudsonMOD has had a phenomenal year, given the number of marketing and editorial partnerships we’ve established in and outside of the New York Metropolitan area in addition to the success we’ve had on the event side of our business. We kicked off the current year in Los Angeles alongside film director Paul Haggis at the Hollywood Domino Event, which benefitted Artists for Peace and Justice. Additionally, we’ve hosted numerous events ranging from Van Cleef & Arpels to NBC’s American Dream Builders to yachting events in Newport, Rhode Island. With all of this success, the one accomplishment that stands out above all the others was the Trump National Bedminster “Concourse for the Kids” event benefitting the Eric Trump Foundation. Having raised substantial proceeds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—a cause I have grown quite passionate about—I am honored to have the opportunity to host this event again next September. With an even more exciting year ahead, HudsonMOD will continue to exceed everyone’s expectations… and I mean everyone’s! Before I jump ahead to next year, I am thrilled to announce the newest addition to the HudsonMOD team, Joumana Kidd, who will take on the role as our lifestyle editor. Joumana and I first met when she was referred by mutual friends to host HudsonMOD’s premier party red carpet event in 2012. With an extensive journalism background working at VH1, Extra and the Grammys (to name a few), it was only a matter of time before I had to add her tier of expertise to our HudsonMOD team. I also would like to take the time to express my deepest condolences to my friends, Diem Brown’s family, as Diem recently passed away after a prolonged fight with ovarian cancer. Diem was always, and always will be, an inspiration to us all. She was truly the definition of a person who celebrated “A Life Well Lived,” and for that, I dedicate this issue to her.

welcomes another successful, talented addition to our team as we enter the new year. Joumana Kidd—actress, philanthropist, journalist and, above all else, proud mother—is our newest lifestyle editor, combining her outgoing personality and expertise in the fields of entertainment and life. While attending San Francisco State University for speech communications, Kidd began her career as a model. Her reporting skills led her to co-host the radio talk show Talking Sports and cover events such as the Grammys and Rock-and-Roll
Hall of Fame ceremonies. Kidd has also worked as a correspondent for Extra and NBA TV as well as a relationship specialist on CBS’s Early Show. She crossed over from broadcasting to acting after her film debut in the 2001 Sundance Film Festival movie Whiplash. A part on NBC’s hit drama Third Watch was a catalyst in her becoming a main character on VH1’s Let’s Talk About Pep. Her advice column “Ask Joumana” deals with family, love and happiness. Going one step further, Kidd’s latest project is her own television show on NET TV, a platform for women to learn, share and examine the daily challenges of the world. She recently hosted HudsonMOD’s Concourse for the Kids event in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, interviewing celebrity guests Jonathan Cheban, Eric Trump, Lara Yunaska and others. With her pop-culture background and charming appeal, Kidd’s coverage of 2015 is not to be missed.

EXPERIENCE
EAU PALM BEACH: PAUSE, PLAY, PERFECT By Simon Murray UNEXPECTED MOMENTS of whimsy.
That’s what the Eau Palm Beach promises its guests. Arriving by chauffeured car from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, the valet hands me a glass of champagne as I step out of the vehicle and enter the decorative lobby. I don’t know if this is meant to be a moment of whimsy, but it’s certainly welcoming. The slender champagne flute remains in my hand throughout the tour of the Floridian resort. On seven acres of Atlantic coastline, the AAA Five Diamond Eau is a splashy new beach resort located in Manalapan that has already received an armload of awards since its establishment in 2013, including many for the property’s indulgent 42,000-square-foot spa. Last year, the resort parted ways with the

The Life EXPERIENCE
Ritz-Carlton brand and has since become affiliated with the Preferred Hotels & Resorts independent group of properties. The Eau moniker (eau is French for water, perfume or liqueur; all could apply here) was adopted from the spa founded in 2009, which has been entirely redefined as the “official adult playground of Palm Beach.” The result? Elemental indulgence, personalization and… rubber ducks. If that throws you for a loop, the Eau spa reminds you to pause, play and perfect. This isn’t a theoretical concept; the alliteration is as much a mantra as it is a guide. Before you put on your magic slippers (sandals), a personal spa concierge commences your luxuriant experience. Clipboard in hand, the concierge helps me to customize my treatment to varying degrees, asking if I want to increase the relaxing vibe with hints of lavender (pause), focus on energy with upbeat music and a citrusy aroma (play), or combine the latest technology for beauty treatments with scents of ginger and vanilla as well as a gold color therapy (perfect). Channeling my inner Robert Frost, I choose the path less traveled—playful—and receive the SelfCentered Massage, with upbeat European music playing in the background. Citrus and eucalyptus fragrances fill the air, giving the impression I’m being massaged on the beaches of Ibiza. The customization is further refined down to the level of “scrub couture.” The Scrub & Polish Bar follows a DIY mentality, allowing guests their choice of ingredients that, after being blended, stirred and whisked, become their very own magic potion applied by the hands of their relaxation masseuse. Although this journalist is alone, he is given leeway to explore the couple’s treatment rooms—performed in a private villa with a shower, bathtub or hamam for two— which seem the perfect way to unwind with a significant other. There is an element of casual fun that pervades the luxury resort, which I find
18
HUDSONMOD.com DECEMBER 2014
charming, if not delightful. Next to the spa’s hot tub are water guns for guests to use at their leisure, and bright yellow rubber ducks bob in the foyer’s wishing well. After my massage, I am found in the Self-Centered Garden (located at the heart of the spa), dangling my feet from the iron-linked swinging chairs that hang over inches of cool water below. From this playfulness stems the inspired guestroom design of famed potter, designer and author Jonathan Adler, a seasonal resident of Palm Beach. Imbued with the barefoot elegance of the Eau, the new guestroom reimagines a luxury retreat with Adler’s personality: equal parts glamour, fantasy, luxury and amusement. Described as a reenvisioning project rather than a total renovation, the room I’m treated to features a silver bamboo detail with ocean inspired blues and teals with the occasional pop of yellow that mimics the Florida sunshine. Outside, the
balcony is framed by cabana-esque, crisp draperies and outfitted with another whimsical hanging chair and a dining area overlooking the infinity pool below. At night, I’m treated to Angle, a contemporary American restaurant featuring locally grown ingredients and South Floridian specialties, including linecaught fish, all natural, dry-aged prime beef and classic seafood appetizers. Behind us stands the award-winning wine wall, and the selections chosen complement the decadent meal at the chef’s table, an imposing under-lit onyx slab. Before heading home, I am treated to another valet, coming to collect my things and offer me a second flute of champagne. While I can’t finish the glass before my car arrives, my crafty and knowledgeable valet (like most of the staff he has been with the property for years) offers to pour the bubbly wine into a coffee cup for the ride to the airport. What a whimsical moment.

MASERATI TURNS 100 When the famed Italian car manufacturer turned 100, we couldn’t ignore the fantastic achievement. Exotic car expert and editor of the Motorsports Community Newsletter Dom Miliano examines Maserati’s Centennial Edition.
I
n celebration of their 100th anniversary, Maserati produced Centennial Edition versions of their GranTurismo MC and GranTurismo Convertible MC motorcars. Each automobile is distinguished from other Maseratis by a unique Centennial badge on the alloy wheels and kick plates, displayed in either a charcoal or smoke-gray finish. Maserati has scrupulously developed innovative colors for the exterior. Born in the Italian seaport of Bologna, Maserati recalls its heritage with a new color called Blu Inchiostro, paying homage to the color used in Bologna’s banner. Another color, Grigio Pietra, incorporates real mica for an authentic metallic effect. They’ve also paid special attention to the interior. A racecarinspired carbon fiber trim appears on the dashboard with double contrasting stitching on the Poltrona Frau Leather seats and embroidered Maserati tridents on the headrests. Although the Centennial Edition focuses on special exterior and interior finishes, comfort has not been neglected. Each car features automatic dual-zone climate controls that adjust the ventilation of the exterior temperature. Many drivers will find

the exhaust note from the Maserati V8 all the music they need. Nonetheless, each car comes with an optional Bose Surround System capable of delivering concert-hall-quality sounds. Thevehiclesdon’tskimponpower, either.BoththeGranTurismo and GranTurismo Convertible are driven by a 4.7-liter V8 engine with an impressive 7,100 revolutions per minute and 454 horsepower. When mated to the 6-speed MC Race Shift gearbox, each special edition Maserati accelerates to 60 mph from a dead stop in about 4.5 seconds, topping out at a racetrack-ready 185 mph. The transmission has three modes to accommodate every driving condition: normal automatic, sport manual and, for those occasional track days, race manual. With acceleration and top speeds to rival many racecars, Maserati hasn’t forgotten the all-important stopping power, equipping each car with awe-inspiring Italian-made Brembo brakes, designed specifically for high-performance vehicles. If you love Italian style and race-bred performances, the Centennial Edition may be what you need. They’re available at the Maserati of Bergen County dealership in New Jersey, but hurry: these limited-edition vehicles are going fast.

FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS, Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams have
sought to make the world a more comfortable place through their successful business, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. An internationally acclaimed home-furnishings company with more than 20 signature stores and locations in America, Canada and Mexico, they’ve provided clients with the resources to create the ultimate living space that’s nothing but luxurious. This year, they celebrated their 25th anniversary with an extravagant event to benefit the Tyler Clementi Foundation and launched their new coffee-table book Who We Are, all while mastering their upcoming 2015 spring collection. HudsonMOD sat down with Gold and Williams to discuss their favorite moments from the first 25 years and how they envision the future.

VDB: What’s next for 2015? MG: We are currently working on our spring 2015 collection, but we can’t discuss it until that date. The pallet colors for spring will not be your common spring pallet. They will be different. The colors will be much better, but you’ll have to wait until spring. Gentlemen, you’re leaving me in suspense, as if it’s a mystery. BW: Yes, it’s like a mystery. Just note that there are exciting things that only we could have captured.

You recently released a new coffeetable book titled Who We Are, and you incorporate recipes. Why is that? MG: Part of a comfortable home is the entertaining. Therefore we decided to include Chef Sean Robinson in our book. Chef Robinson has been our corporate and personal chef for years. The book contains inserts of his recipes. We believe the combination of casual home comfort and food gives it a nice southern twist. BW: Our book is like a scrapbook of our 25 years infused with a collection of recipes. How did you select the best items? MG: The best items select themselves. They are the things that keep selling.
The Penthouse Suite at the Hotel Derek in Houston, Texas. Designers who put their vision into the rooms used pieces from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.
We introduce new merchandise every six months, and we discontinue the things that are our worst thoughts. However, some items have been with us for more than 10 years, making it to our best-seller list. Your company was recently selected to design the Hotel Derek Penthouse Suite. What was your role? MG: Our head of design worked with the designers of the hotel. It’s always exciting to see the vision of other designers using our merchandise.
What inspires you? MG: A restaurant, a hotel, meeting customers, being interviewed by you, your compliments on our work and products. BW: Antique shops, a flea market, a combination of colors you have never seen before, a transformation of shapes. Just sitting here looking at the chair just made me think of a floor lamp with round tubes that we need to create. The creativity part of my job is the fun part of the business, and that is truly inspirational. Where do you see the company in 10 years? MG: Our vision is to create more stores that are going to help people throughout the country make their house a dream home. Tell me your most memorable moment. MG: Meeting President Barack Obama and telling the President that the sectional and swivel chair in their family room of the White House was from our company. The President was delighted to hear this and replied, “The swivel chair is the one that I sit in all the time.” That was very memorable, knowing that our chair is in the White House. BW: The most memorable for me are opening our first store 10 years ago and being able to work directly with the consumer. Define luxury. MG: Things that are really special and make me feel good, like my upholstered headboard and the luxurious fabric of my bed sheets. BW: Having time to do the little things in life: drinking a glass of wine, working outside in the yard or having a nice conversation at the dinner table.

Bobby represented the original Brownstone Diner, located in Jersey City, on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, while Vanessa lent her interior-design expertise to Robert Irvine and helped decorate a renovated dining space on Restaurant Impossible. “In hindsight, Restaurant Impossible was a stepping stone that prepared me for the biggest personal challenge of my entire design life,” says Vanessa, “not only a collaboration between restaurant owner and restaurant designer, but the compromises between husband and wife.” The new diner, set to open in Edgewater, is the second Brownstone Diner & Pancake Factory to take root in New Jersey. The original is owned and has been operated by the Bournias family since 1968. Because of its great success, Bobby decided to open another. Although the location and menu were quickly settled (Bobby is keeping many of his family’s pancake recipes along with adding some new options), Vanessa hit a block when it came to deciding what style and direction to choose in designing the restaurant. “The main idea was that the restaurant would feature a great deal of our blended personalities,” says Vanessa. After Vanessa and her team contemplated an array of designs and spent countless hours in the studio, the idea came to her. Brownstone Diner turns its customers’ world upside down. In keeping with the inverted décor, Deleon added a juice bar built to look like an outdoor park, installed real brick walls and included custom garden murals. She put in outdoor walkway lighting, a vintage bike, benches and lampposts to strengthen the outdoor theme. While adding the final touches to the Brownstone, Vanessa wanted to honor the original 1968 diner in her decorations. She used custom newspaper wallpaper featuring clips of the grand opening of the original diner, an article of Bobby’s mother and father, and articles showing Bobby and Fieri, Irvine and Vanessa, and Bobby’s sisters Zoe and Maria, who are also very involved in the family business. Guests will be given the full experience of the family’s history and hints of the successes yet to come.

Chef Bernard Liberatore,

RUFFLES ARE IN VOGUE in kitchens everywhere, and their piquant flavor is spicing up all kinds of dishes: mac and cheese, chips, pizza, eggs benedict, scrambles, quiche, burgers and, of course, haute cuisine. The following HudsonMOD truffle challenge masterpieces—the creations of two master chefs—delighted our palettes. They’ll delight yours, too.
Chef Beck Bolender, Executive Chef of
Executive Chef of the Core Club, NYC
One Twenty One, North Salem, NY
Chef Liberatore has two passions: cuisine and rugby. He played professional rugby nationally and internationally while training at the best culinary schools in France. Of course, being French, truffles flow through his Gallic veins. Looking like a relative of actor Gérard Depardieu, Liberatore works the kitchen for his HudsonMOD Truffle Indulgence as if conducting a great operatic movement, filling every aspect of the preparation with a passion for cooking and a celebration of flavor. For cooking instructions, go to HudsonMOD.com/TruffleIndulgence.
Chef Bolender’s love for the freshest local food was instilled on the farm where he grew up. Working at the Culinary Institute of America and becoming the youngest sous chef in the history of Jean-Georges & Nougatine restaurant in New York City, he learned the nuances of haute cuisine without losing touch with the feel-good aspect of comfort food. Whether you make his dishes at home or take the 40-minute drive to his North Salem haunt, it is definitely worth the effort.

HE BIG APPLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN one of the world’s most sought after destinations to live. In recent years, though, New Jersey’s Gold Coast has become an irrepressible competitor by providing the same and in some cases more luxurious amenities to its residents: a more viable real-estate market, superior building features, larger living spaces and an even more breathtaking view of Manhattan’s skyline than Brooklyn offers. While people struggle to find lavish living spaces on the island for a reasonable price, Gold Coast owners continue to reap the benefits of both sides of the Hudson River. With his expertise in selling luxury homes in New Jersey and on the Gold Coast, Scott Waldman has broken New Jersey realestate records with the two highest sales in the state’s history. Rightfully earning his title as New Jersey’s very own “Million Dollar Listing Broker,” Waldman has been selling homes in K. Hovnanian’s 77 Hudson, an opulent high-rise condominium development that has become an iconic piece of property in New Jersey, attracting buyers from all over the world. As the lead broker of the luxurious building, Waldman says, “The views [from 77 Hudson] are unmatched by any other building along the Gold Coast. And you can’t beat the price. If you look in the city for similar square footage, you will pay double, if not more.” Not only does 77 Hudson offer exceptional views of New York City’s iconic skyline, but it also is located across the street from the ferry and New Jersey PATH, making commutes to and from New York City very convenient. Besides the ideal location, 77 Hudson provides homeowners with a long list of amenities, including a virtual golf room, 24/7 concierge services, a rooftop bar, screening rooms and a fully equipped gym. Although Waldman has already sold most of the lavish homes in the building, two still remain, and both are penthouse residences. Selling for nearly $3-million each, K. Hovnanian and Waldman teamed up with HudsonMOD to showcase one of the two remaining high rises to potential buyers. An exclusive cocktail event in honor of 77 Hudson’s acquirable space was held on Wednesday, November 12 at the premier penthouse located on the 47th floor. More than a hundred VIP brokers from the New York City metropolitan area attended the event, which was staged

MICHAEL STRAHAN WHO ELSE COULD EFFECTIVELY LEAD THIS ILLUSTRIOUS 100 LIST? THE FORMER FOOTBALL STAR TURNED TALK-SHOW HOST IS CHANGING THE SCRIPT ON WHAT “RETIRED PLAYER” MEANS TODAY.
THIS HAS BEEN ONE giant year for Michael Strahan. In February, the effusive, jocular, brawny former football star was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame during halftime at Super Bowl XLVIII, putting a stamp on his former career as a New York Giant and seven-time Pro-Bowler. Standing at center field, Strahan initiated the ceremonial coin toss, the coin flipping through the air and landing on the turf. But relying simply on luck was never part of Strahan’s future. For a man that accrued a franchise record for most sacks, “retirement” was just another allusive idea that needed to be taken down. But how do you redefine retirement? By staying engaged, that’s how. Which is why it’s difficult to find a harder working person in show business today. Not everyone can make the transition from pro-athlete to revered media personality. First down conversions hardly translate into meteoric resurgences on-air; trading gridiron blows for couch talk with Eva Longoria is no small feat. But for Strahan, a likeable, down-to-earth persona always had a future in television after removing his shoulder pads in favor of sports coats. Few, however, could’ve predicted how far he would go. Since retiring with the Giants in 2008, leaving the club on a high note with its first Super Bowl victory in nearly two decades, (we’re still relishing the win over Tom Brady and the undefeated New England Patriots), Strahan has made impressive strides as co-host of the rechristened syndicated talk show Live! with Kelly and Michael. That’s just his week schedule. During the football season, Strahan flies out to Los Angeles every weekend to film segments for the Fox NFL Sunday pregame show. Since April, he can also be found as a part-time co-host on ABC’s Good Morning America. Philanthropy is another constant in Strahan’s life. Recently, he led a star-studded roster of celebrities lending support for the 11th annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s ‘Thanks and Giving’ campaign. In the behind the
All smiles here as Michael Strahan poses with his family
scenes video from the shoot, the pleasurable gravitational pull Strahan has can be felt as he injects humor into the lives of St. Jude’s younger patients; a Patch Adams-type as goofy as he is genuine. Maybe that’s what he discovered: retirement doesn’t have to be a continous game of golf in a tropical paradise. It can also be found in the ways you positively impact those around you, from humanizing celebrities on air with his costar Kelly Ripa to helping those most deserving of our generosity. Retirement certainly hasn’t stopped him from being named number eight on People Magazine’s 2014 Sexiest Man Alive list. “I don’t know who’s voting on that, but congratulations to Michael, I guess,” jokingly ribbed Strahan’s long-time quarterback, Eli Manning. “Well-deserved.” Well-deserved, indeed. For Strahan, the sky’s the limit. Retirement was only the beginning for this jovial superstar, as he’s slated to make his big-screen debut alongside Channing Tatum in next year’s Magic Mike XXL.

#GIRLBOSS Following up last year’s Sheryl Sandberg success with Lean In, this year belongs to Sophia Amoruso, founder and CEO of online fashion retailer, Nasty Gal. Amoruso published #GIRLBOSS, which could be categorized as Lean In’s more rebellious yet similarly popular younger sister. While the two are related, their stances on women in the business world are quite different. Amoruso turned Nasty Gal into one of today’s most popular online retailers, selling more than $100 million in clothing and accessories. She wrote #GIRLBOSS to serve as a witty and brutally honest platform for young entrepreneurs, telling her incredible yet bumpy success story and offering bossy business tactics and advice on achieving goals.

DEREK JETER Though unscripted, it was still a work of the finest showmanship. Walking up to the plate with bat under the arm and adjusting his gloves (two of the trademarks for which he’s known), the Captain of Clutch, “Mr. November” himself, jumped on a first-pitch fastball and sent the ball into right field to score the winning run in a dramatic New York Yankees win over the Baltimore Orioles. It was Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium after announcing his retirement earlier this year. Although Jeter’s 3,000 hits and other accolades have made him a living legend for the Yankees franchise, his professionalism and candidness are what make him one of the all-time greats ever to wear pinstripes.

ERIC TRUMP There are few truly blessed people who also are generous givers. Eric Trump founded the Eric Trump Foundation in 2006 to raise funds for children fighting life-threatening diseases at St. Jude. With $28-million already donated, he’s turned the foundation into one of the largest charities in the U.S. His new building, the Eric Trump Foundation Surgery & ICU Center, will open in 2015 to expand St. Jude’s current surgery space by over 50 percent.

SOHO HOUSE CHICAGO The Soho House has added another star residence to its constellation across the world. Now, those traveling to the Windy City need not fret when looking for a space to unwind with other creative souls. For the British brand, the 12th house is also its largest, at 108,000 square feet. Standout features include 40 hotel rooms, a gym with a professional boxing room, pool deck and the Cowshed spa offering “sociable grooming” services to members.
JANET YELLEN This February, the world watched the historic passing of the Federal Reserve baton to Janet Yellen, the first woman to hold the spot. Yellen now heads the most influential central bank in the world. In July she received an honorary doctorate from the London School of Economics prompting Forbes to (unsurprisingly) name her the most powerful woman in the U.S. and second most powerful in the world.
The Charles Hotel in Munich is collaborating with jeweler Carl F. Bucherer to give one lucky guest a truly dazzling New Year’s Eve. During the celebration, the hotel will hand out flutes of champagne containing a diamond at the bottom of each glass. However, only one will hold the real diamond, valued at $3,150. Each $440 ticket includes a cocktail hour, an eight-course dinner, the New Year’s Eve party and, of course, the champagne reception.
DOMINGO ZAPATA The Spanish-American artist has sky-rocketed to fame within the past couple of years. Known for his Neo Expressionist art, which mixes modern and urban designs, Zapata’s famed work has been set to hang in the newly-restored Colosseum in Rome as well as the lobby in New York’s Plaza Hotel. A new exhibition in New York’s C24 Gallery titled “A Bullfighter in New York/Un Torero En Nueva York” isn’t the only mark the famed artist has left on the big city. Zapata was announced as the exclusive artist for the new Freedom Tower and will have his artwork displayed in the lobby of the iconic skyscraper.

Welcome to the future of online shopping.
AUDRA MCDONALD Who could forget the enchanting moment of Audra McDonald’s acceptance speech during her Tony win for her performance of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. Already one of Broadway’s greats, McDonald broke records when she became the first person ever to earn six Tony Awards. McDonald was praised for capturing Holiday’s heartbreaking vocals and side-mouth delivery. While accepting her Tony, McDonald lauded Holiday and the woman that came before her, “I want to thank all the shoulders of the strong and brave and courageous women that I’m standing on.” We anticipate number seven isn’t far away.
GUINNESS THE 1759 Beer has a reputation for being an unglamorous drink compared to champagne or scotch. Yet few alcoholic beverages (beer or otherwise) compare to this year’s Guinness the 1759. It’s rich with caramel flavors and subtle hop notes, and Guinness produced only 90,000 bottles, making this amber ale a rare discovery amongst beer lovers. Named after the year Arthur Guinness signed the 9,000-year-old lease at St. James’ Gate in Dublin, the moniker is a testament to how much Guinness is enjoyed by those who appreciate quality taste.

SULLIVANS COVE FRENCH OAK PORT CASK Who would have thought that the world’s best single malt whisky of 2014 would come from Australia? Giving the Scots and Irish a run for their money, the owners of Sullivans Cove’s French Oak Port Cask won the most prestigious international whisky award, beating even Scotland and Japan. Priced at $180 a bottle, this complex flavoring is created with rich toffee and molasses notes. Taste this year’s greatest whisky the next time you’re down under.
THE BIRKIN BAG The iconic Birkin Bag was named after actress Jane Birkin, who met Hermes CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a plane. Nearly 20 years later, the rare Hermes 30-centimeter diamond Himalayan Nilo Crocodile Birkin is the world’s most expensive handbag: $432,000. The hardware on the bag is 18-karat white gold covered with studded white diamonds, while the Cadena lock weighs 69 grams of gold and is studded with 40 white round brilliant diamonds. Small wonder this stunning creation is a staple in handbag history.
LOUBI UNDER RED The idea behind Christian Louboutin’s signature red soles originated in the red nail polish women wear, so it’s only fitting the French designer finally launched Loubi Under Red earlier this year. A special fine-tipped brush transforms the underside of nails to mirror the deep red of his iconic soles. Of course, the polish isn’t intended only for the underside. You can use it to coat your entire nail or for nail art. Now admirers of these coveted heels can embrace them even more.

BMW i8 Every great pioneering achievement has its story. In the case of the BMW i8, it begins in 2008 with the launch of Project I and ends (for the time being) with the series production of the plug-in hybrid boasting the appearance and breathtaking performance of a sports car, the consumption and emissions of a compact car, and the intelligence and innovation of a concept car. The first deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. took place at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 15, and that special edition features individual frozen grey metallic exterior paint, a Dalbergia brown leather upholstery, trim accents in “i Blue” and other unique features. DIEM BROWN This wasn’t supposed to be a posthumous tribute. When I wrote here about Diem several weeks ago, she had been hospitalized with colon cancer. Although the next month brought frightening news when Diem announced the cancer had spread to her liver and lymph nodes, part of me (and in all honesty a large part) believed her when she said in August: “I’m going to have a family and get married and the whole American, 2 kids, white-picket fence dream. It’s something that’s really important to me, because it means a long-term future.” It wasn’t an unrealistic goal for someone who’d fought so hard since being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 23. It seemed the MTV star and HudsonMOD celebrity host could achieve anything she set her mind to. It was this optimism that made her inspirational and absolutely magnetic. Though I worked with her sparingly as editor, each time she and I attended an event I thoroughly enjoyed her company. She enriched every moment, was always upbeat, always cheerful. It pains me to report that on Friday, November 14, Diem lost her long battle with cancer. Even in her final moments, she rejoiced in the beauty of life. We at HudsonMOD will always cherish the short time we worked with Diem. Our lives, as well as those she touched through her blog on People.com and the organization MedGift (founded to assist those in financial, physical and emotional need), are all the richer because of her compassion and unending devotion to life. She dreamed and we allowed ourselves to dream with her. We will continue to do so in her honor. —Simon Murray

Thirty-three feet per second. That’s how fast the elevators travel to the top of the world’s tallest man-made structure, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. If that weren’t impressive enough, passengers see projections of other global landmarks— there goes the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building—to give them a sense of how high this needle really is. Now, the Burj Khalifa SKY does the same. For the first time ever, visitors can ascend to Level 125, where they can take in 360-degree views of the city, and shoot up to the 148th floor—or SKY level—for the highest outdoor terrace in the world.
OUTERLIMITS POWERBOATS In today’s world, few things are more exhilarating than speed. Our smart phones take us on journeys over the Web in a flash. They’re the only performance manufacturer in the world using carbon fiber post-cured epoxy in their vessels, meaning they’re stronger and lighter.
MARY BARRA The “boys club” still exists in a variety of elitecentric fields, such as Hollywood, Wall Street and the automobile industry. Although the number of women in these fields has grown remarkably, the game-changer of 2014 came last January when Mary Barra became the first female CEO of General Motors and the first female CEO ever for a major global automaker. OSCAR DE LA RENTA Couturier to Jacqueline Kennedy. Married to Françoise de Langlade and then Annette Engelhard. Award-winning designer for Lanvin and Balmain. Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo—otherwise known by his eponymous fashion house, Oscar de la Renta—was many things. In 2007, a year after Oscar was diagnosed with cancer, Executive Director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and creator of NY Fashion Week, Fern Mallis, called him “The Sultan of Suave.” Indeed, since his passing this October, everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Taylor Swift to Reese Witherspoon has paid their sartorial respects by donning his eye-catching lace and embroidered dresses on the red carpet. Although Peter Copping (former artistic director of Nina Ricci) has been hired to make sure Oscar’s legendary looks live on, the Santo Domingo-born designer said it best after receiving his cancer diagnosis: “The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die... The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life.”
THE TRANSPARENT CANOE KAYAK If glass-bottom boats were innovative, the transparent canoe is genius! The appellation of this canoe-kayak is no lie: it’s literally a clear, see-through boat. What better way to enjoy your beachside villa than on a two-person canoe-kayak that offers paddlers an underwater vista? Being able to see what is below you opens a whole new world of underwater action.

LAMBORGHINI ASTERION The Paris Motor Show has seen its fair share of unveils from the world’s luxury supercar companies, enough to blunt the edge of surprise. Even so, this year Lamborghini took our breath away with the 910 horsepower Asterion, a marvel of forward-thinking ingenuity. Why? It’s been given the LPI distinction by the raging bull, or what the Italians call Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido. In other words, Lamborghini has decided to produce hybrids.

FRANCESCA AMFITHEATROF
A
S 2014 DRAWS TO A CLOSE, strong, sophisticated women are using their voices and skills more than ever to drive the luxe lifestyle forward. What “forward” means is still being defined, but in the world of design Francesca Amfitheatrof—trained silversmith, jeweler and Tiffany & Co.’s first female design director in its 177 years of business—is part of this evolution. It’s not surprising to find Amfitheatrof in this role. Growing up in several international cities, she immersed herself in art and culture. Her parents also had artistic and fashion roots with her father being a Time bureau chief and mother a public relations executive at Valentino and Armani. Before joining Tiffany, she worked on collections for some of the most prominent high-end brands, including Chanel, Fendi, Marni, Alessi and Asprey. Amfitheatrof moved to Brooklyn last year and brought her global vision to Tiffany. She launched the Tiffany T, a rich collection of cuffs, necklaces and rings featuring a bold, sculptural look evocative of Manhattan’s architecture. In the midst of a world tour supporting the Tiffany T launch, HudsonMOD caught up with Amfitheatrof and discussed her T designs, living in New York City and what’s in store next.
From the streets of London to Tiffany’s headquarters in Midtown, Amfitheatrof now manages 20 people in design.
By Mara Model
Q: After living in Rome, Tokyo and England, how has living in Brooklyn and working in New York City been for you? A: In New York, people have such great energy and curate their looks in a really interesting way. Honestly, I can’t think of a more exciting place I could possibly be. Q: What was the process of designing the Tiffany T? A: “T” felt like a natural jumping off point for my work here. It pays homage to the Tiffany name, but it also has a verticality and angularity that I associate with the energy and intensity of New York. There is a lot of New York in Tiffany T, and by that I mean the relentless movement, optimism and creativity you find on these streets. [New York] is a place of courage and reinvention that constantly sparks creativity. What I love about it too, though, is that it’s democratic. It’s an attitude, not an age. Q: What fashion designers inspired you this year? A: Haider Ackermann, A/W 2014 Collection is absolutely perfect to be worn with the T collection. It is all about proportion, simplicity, purity and strength—all qualities I searched for while creating T. I also love the Chanel supermarket collection and everything by Preen. These three designers have all the qualities that inspire me. Q: What does becoming the first female design director for Tiffany mean to you? A: We have endless women who have really left a mark on this brand, and that’s been a huge influence. At Tiffany, we carry forward the spirit of risk and vision. We’re unfettered by historical styles or schools of design. Rather, we create with a freedom to make—and break—our own rules. Q: What designs are you working on next? A: Blue Book 2015 [a new high jewelry collection] for which I drew my inspiration from the art of the sea. Q: Define luxury. A: For me luxury is about purity and originality rather than ostentation and complication. Not having to fuss, not having to work too hard, and being approachable and inviting— that’s luxurious to me and is often the ultimate goal when I design. There’s real beauty when you wear something— whether it’s jewelry or fashion—that is effortless and suits you so perfectly. It becomes part of who you are. Q: What’s something that readers don’t know about you but should? A: When I’m on holiday, I’ll spend as much time visiting jewelry stores as I do museums and galleries.
