Your Exclusive Invitation It’s no surprise that more than 54.1 million people visited Chicago last year. This record-setting number only confi rms what we already know: Chicago is an impressive city. With its stunning Gold Coast, award-winning culinary scene, arts, culture, luxury retailers along the Magnificent Mile and, let’s not forget, the World Champion Cubs, Chicago is second to none. It’s for these reasons and so many more that we feel honored to serve this great city with ChicagoMOD, MOD Media’s newest publication in our rapidly growing portfolio and the city’s newest name in luxury. ChicagoMOD is your exclusive invitation to an all-encompassing “Life Well Lived.” This is not only our tagline, but also a mission we fi rmly believe in and strive to realize every day. A significent component of this mission is our dedication to philanthropy. On April 5, a portion of the proceeds from ChicagoMOD’s star-studded premiere event will benefit the 100 Club of Chicago, which supports the families of local fallen fi rst responders. We were introduced to this nonprofit by Taylor Kinney. The 100 Club is an organization that Taylor holds dear to his heart. I look forward to our continual support of this heroic association as well as other nonprofits throughout the year. Thank you for welcoming us to the magnificent city of Chicago. We’re honored to present you with ChicagoMOD to help curate your experiences for a “Life Well Lived.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

New Beginnings Simon Sinek’s motivational and now-iconic 2009 TED talk urged entrepreneurs and business leaders to “start with why.” This seems like an excellent place to begin my editor’s letter for the premiere issue of ChicagoMOD. Why, might you ask, debut a new luxury lifestyle publication in Chicago, circa 2017? Brimming with Fortune 500 companies, Chicago is one of America’s most affluent cities, and MOD Media is ideally positioned to deliver the essential elements of a “Life Well Lived” to Chicago’s most discerning audience. In ChicagoMOD, we will offer exciting and exclusive editorial— city-focused as well as internationally relevant—to our globally sophisticated audience. A case in point is our exclusive cover story with the rarely interviewed actor Taylor Kinney of NBC’s Chicago Fire. Now in its fifth season, the hit show paved the way for the popular Dick Wolf crossover series that now includes Chicago P.D., Chicago Med and the more recent Chicago Justice. Our city has become the hippest and trendiest location for filming top television and hit cable series. And ChicagoMOD is right there with them. Read our up-close-and-personal talk with a truly down-to-earth guy. Because Chicago is a world-class dining destination—with 26 Michelin-star rated restaurants—we debut with our Travel, Food & Wine issue on the heels of this year’s Jean Banchet Awards for Culinary Excellence. Read our interviews with this year’s award winners as well as our feature on the sweetest desserts and wine pairings from some of the city’s top pastry chefs. Then, book your dinner reservations! There is so much more to enjoy and read about in our premiere issue, from features on the finest timepieces and travel to Palm Beach and Copenhagen, to an inside peek at a fabulous pied-a-terre in the Aqua building and a conversation with Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. I look forward to bringing you our upcoming Fashion & Home issue in May. Until then,

What’s your personal definition of luxury?

“My idea of luxury is work that I’m passionate about, a home that is both welcoming and inspiring, and spending time with the people I love.”

“Luxury is knowing how to live well, experiencing the beauty in the ordinary and the extraordinary of every day. True luxury is having the time to follow your heart and an appreciation of where it takes you.”

Kerrie Kennedy

Sandi Todorovich “To me, as it relates to travel, luxury is an indulgence you gift yourself that provides an immediate feeling of immense pleasure. It is a combination of the highest quality and top service levels, at a price, and is frequently the part that lingers longest in your memory.”

Jill Brooke

Simon Murray

Dom Miliano

Frank Ishman

“Luxury is not settling and finding the best quality in whatever you do—that steaming fresh ground coffee in the morning, fresh orange juice instead of processed, the extra-pile cashmere sweater that keeps you cozy on a chilly day. As time moves on, one realizes that the quality purchases endure. Luxury is embracing life’s beauty and finding what resonates with you.”

“Luxury, of course, is a relative word. For some, the essential components to life are a luxury. I try to never forget that. But— we’ll call it supreme luxury—is when all the tiny little details, the very minutiae, picked up only by our subconscious, is taken care of down to the last piston, the last drop, the last stitch. It’s transcending the norm, and entering the realm of the fantastic. That both ends of the spectrum exist in the same word is poetry.”

“I think luxury is being able to make smart choices. Having the ability to make decisions among life’s many options, based solely on things like quality, comfort, beauty and convenience, is the ultimate luxury.”

“Luxury means to me, in a nutshell, personal elegance that goes above and beyond your daily life. I believe luxury can be achieved at all levels and can still have equal elegance whether at $50 or $5,000 dollars. I try hard to introduce a little luxury into my life every day and appreciate everything.”

RUGGED SOPHISTICATION “It’s always a surprise working with an actor for the first time. One of the daunting tasks of my job is not speaking with or meeting the person I’ll be styling beforehand. I have to rely on pictures and my styling sixth sense, which I liken to being the Style Whisperer. I imagined Taylor as a masculine down-to-earth kind of guy, and he did not disappoint. His rugged yet sophisticated vibe was a perfect match for the sharp-cut classic suits and the luxe leather motorcycle jackets I selected for him. While not a fashionista or your typical LA celebutante, Taylor had a keen interest in everything from the fabrics to the fit and was a natural in all of the looks. But ultimately, nothing is more stylish than graciousness, kindness and humor, which makes him a real star.” –Eric Himel

Instead, we add the smoky element with actual smoke from our smoke box behind the bar,” says Trousdale. “This is done in part for presentation, but more so to round out and expose the flavors within. The longer the guest lets it sit in the corked bottle, the more pronounced the smoke flavors will be.” Be prepared to sound the alarm!

GUCCI X GUCCIGHOST It was 2013 when the Olympic snowboarder-turned-graffiti artist, GucciGhost (aka Trouble Andrew), cut two eyeholes in a Gucci bed sheet for his Halloween costume, thus introducing his new alter ego to the world. GucciGhost began leaving his tag, a personal interpretation of Gucci’s logo, around his adopted city of New York before catching the eye of the brand’s Creative Director, Alessandro Michele. GucciGhost was brought aboard the major Italian fashion house to create a capsule collection featuring graffiti-style logos, hand-drawn doodles and bold details. His artistry can be seen on everything from women’s skirts to wallets to pocket squares in this eye-catching collection. Available at Gucci Retailers in Chicago or Gucci.com, $2,980

sure. You’ve got artists, collectors, curators and gallerists. We all come to the table because we are all passionate about art. We attend a lot of events supporting artists or foundations, and we have a lot of friends in the art world. We’ll be in NYC and meet people and they’ll just randomly invite us over to their home the next day to see their collection. It’s wonderful, really, to get to go into someone else’s home and hear their personal stories and their interactions with the artists. It’s such a big part of our lives and we love it. This is such an amazing world to be a part of. Is it important to have a strategy when assembling an art collection over time? Rich: Our philosophy has evolved over time, starting with collecting artists from a prior generation who were influential to us and then evolving to collecting artists of our own generation who have been influenced by that generation. Art of our generation might also be closer to a certain price point. We can also have a close relationship with people of our time, like Rashid Johnson, and have a conversation with him that we can relate to. What art shows do you attend and recommend to others? Rich: EXPO Chicago is done very well and is very manageable. People come from all over the world to attend. We go to Art Basel in Miami Beach every year, which is an outstanding fair to see world-class art, without question. Beth: We also go to Frieze New York and the Amory Show. The fairs are great because you get to see so much art in one setting. We learn about artists we haven’t heard of and we’ll come home and do research, look at their body of work and see if it is an artist we want to add to our collection. Richard and Beth Heller

hicago may not be the first city that comes to mind when you’re thinking of buying a second home. But for Coloradans Janet and Frank Nessinger, owning a pied-à-terre here was a decades-long dream. Frank grew up in the Chicago area, went to school in Boulder and ended up staying there for a job. Janet, a native Coloradan, was based in Chicago in the ‘80s when she worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Both missed the beauty and vitality of the city. That they both had family living in Chicago (his extended

family, her sister) sealed the deal. Chicago was calling them home. Their top priority was a view of what they missed most: the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan. So when their realtor took them to see two side-by-side units for sale in the Jeanne Gang-designed Aqua building, it was love at first sight. From the building itself, with its iconic, sculptural presence and numerous amenities, to the units’ sweeping lake views and ultra-modern aesthetic, the couple knew immediately this is what they were looking for.

That said, it wasn’t exactly A three-sided fireplace lends turnkey. To combine the two warmth to the living room, units (a one-bedroom and a dining room and kitchen, with one-bedroom plus den), the the stunning vista as backdrop. couple assembled a dream team: contractor Bob Soffer, lighting designer Anne Kustner, kitchen designer Peter Harris and interior designer Julia Buckingham, who was tasked with orchestrating the project.

The Life SHELTER

Early on, they hit a minor snag. When the walls were down and the space was larger, the ceilings began to look a little on the low side. “It felt kind of closed in,” recalls Janet. Enter lighting designer Kustner, who came up with the idea of building a soffit on the ceiling and lighting the recessed areas in both the living room and dining room. The end result is a rather remarkable illusion of soaring ceilings. Cleverly, the soffit in the center of the room also serves as a place for the fireplace to extend into, making it seem as if there’s an actual chimney. According to Buckingham, the see-through gas fireplace, clad in limestone with a playful vein texture, made for a logical transition between the two units. “Because it’s open on three sides to the living room, dining room and kitchen, it creates this wonderful, welcoming aura in the center of the home,” she says. “It’s great for entertaining.” Entertaining was a big part of the agenda for this couple. Whereas their life in Colorado tends to be low-key and quiet, in Chicago they envisioned something far more social and energetic. Similarly, they visualized an aesthetic vastly different from their rustic, lodgelike, earth-toned mountain home. “Janet and Frank knew right away they wanted something more urban, modern and coolly elegant,” Buckingham says. “Our inspiration really was the views of Lake Michigan, so we chose a color palette of cool grays and blues because we didn’t want to distract the eye looking out onto the lake.” The Aqua building itself, with its wavelike curves, provided further inspiration. “The exterior of the building is all about the watery

of the Aqua building. The fluid movement of the glass tile backsplash, featuring waves of blues and greens, along with a set of sensuously curved leather counter stools, complete the statement. In the dining room where a lot of the entertaining happens, Buckingham installed a wet bar using leftover cabinetry from one of the units, lined the wall with mirrored tile and hung shelves to display wine glasses. To capture the couples’ love of casual soirées, the dining room table converts to a billiards table. “When we throw a party, at some point we always take the top off so people can play billiards,” Janet says. “It really adds an element of fun, and it’s something my boys truly enjoy.” While the oldest son laid claim to the second bedroom, Buckingham found space for the younger son in a room that would also serve as a den. Because the interior room didn’t have any windows, Buckingham added transom windows to bring in light, installed a Murphy bed and equipped

In the powder room, the floor itself, an unusual black, white and avocado green mid-century modernesque tile from the Fine Line in Chicago, is the art. Still, the art that matters most to this dual-city couple is the art of living well. “We’re here about every three months and Christmas and Easter, and we always have a party for the Air and Water Show,” Janet says. “It’s been so wonderful to have the hotel below us for extra guests, plus all the amenities: the indoor and outdoor pool, the fitness center, the amazing staff, not to mention the park here, all the great restaurants and being so close to the lake. Make A Break For

THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH BY NICOLE FONZINO

L

uxury has no boundaries, and neither does The Breakers Palm Beach. Established by famed American industrialist Henry Morrison Flagler, the world-renowned hotel has been one of Florida’s most sought-after destina-

tions for decades, and rightfully so. Think vibrant-green palm trees, spectacular year-round weather, numerous highly rated restaurants and stretches of white beaches. Whether you’re escaping the cold winter months in the metropolitan area or simply in need of a relaxing retreat, The Breakers never disappoints. Flagler once said, “Helping others is like helping yourself,” a maxim he faithfully lived by. The Florida East Coast Railway system which he famously built up made his luxury resort accessible to all Americans. The line allowed people to experience not only his grand hotel, but also the bliss of Palm Beach. Ever since the railway’s establishment, The Breakers has been deemed one of the premier resorts of the South. Aristocrats, honeymooners and families flock to the coastal hotel to enjoy its superior amenities, picture-perfect weather and wonderful history. The hotel’s registry lists some of America’s wealthiest families, including the J.P. Morgans, Astors and Vanderbilts, who all came here to bask in the The Breakers’ magnificence. The rich and famous still gather here. Last year, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello celebrated a romantic wedding reception at the property. Not surprisingly, the allure of being able to vacation like royalty has proved irresistible to middle-class Americans, too.

The Life EXPERIENCE

There’s no doubt as to why so many people come to enjoy the resort. The Breakers is unlike any other property in the area, largely due to its Italian Renaissance-style architecture that allows you to experience a European hotel without leaving the U.S. Modeled after a few of Italy’s most iconic structures including Villa Medici in Rome, the Florentine Fountain in Florence and the Palazzo Carrega-Cataldi in Genoa, The Breakers stands out gloriously amongst its neighboring buildings. R&R AT THE BREAKERS With 538 rooms (68 are high-end suites) and 140 acres of oceanfront property, The Breakers can easily accommodate a large number of visitors. It offers a variety of activities for every demographic, from sports gurus to spa retreaters to fine diners. There are two premier championship courses: the Ocean Course and Ree Jones Course, both elite in their own ways. The Ocean Course is prominently known through-

As fate would have it—and Kinney is a believer in fate—Wednesday wasn’t a shooting day for Chicago Fire, so he eagerly accepted. However, the weather would not cooperate. Blessed with piercing blue eyes reminiscent of Paul Newman’s, Kinney captivates with quiet calm and rugged authenticity. “Writing for Taylor is so easy because he acts with his eyes,” says co-executive producer Brandt. “In a television era where everyone has to have a quippy or snarky comeback, Taylor does it the right way: from the inside out. He is right up there in terms of pure magnetism.” Kinney credits the show’s location for the palpable and genuine camaraderie on and off the set. “Not knowthe cast bonded by spending time Kinney throws out the ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field prior to a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds in 2012.

And the Jean Banchet Goes to‌ Every January, chefs from across the Chicago area join together with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to celebrate the Oscars of the Chicago dining scene, the prestigious Jean Banchet Awards for Culinary Excellence. Named in honor of the late, great Jean Banchet, whose exquisite French feasts at Le Francais in Wheeling helped transform the Chicago area into a must-visit dining destination, the Banchet Awards honor the very best restaurateurs, chefs, sommeliers and service teams the city has to offer. In the wake of the star-studded festivities, we caught up with some of the night’s biggest winners to discuss their culinary inspirations, the growing significance of the Chicago dining scene and the delicious surprises they have in store for us in the year ahead.

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL

COPENHAGEN BY SANDI TODOROVICH

I NEVER IMAGINED A MOVE TO EUROPE PLANNED FOR ONE YEAR WOULD TURN INTO SIX and afford the opportunity to live not only in London but also in Copenhagen, a city I knew very little about but quickly fell hard for. Living in Copenhagen was such a contrast to London life, but equally enjoyable for many different reasons. I was lucky enough to meet some amazing Danes before I relocated there, which eased my transition to their lifestyle. It is a cosmopolitan city full of good looking Danes, and is known for its minimalist and functional design, numerous canals and colorfully painted houses on cobblestone streets.

This is one of the most stunning castles I have seen, and I’ve seen a lot! The exterior is beautiful from all sides; you feel as if you’re in a fairy tale. The courtyard entrance with the large fountain sets the stage for a castle tour you can do on your own with or without an informative audio guide. Grab your light jacket and head outside for a five-minute walk along the Strøget to Café Europa 1989. This popular spot is located on the corner of Amagertorv, a bustling square along the pedestrian street, and has a number of outside tables. Grab a seat outside and enjoy your coffee and brunch with the other lucky patrons able to relax on the square. After brunch, head into Illum Bolighus just across Amagertorv Square to browse and shop for beautifully designed Danish home accessories. Afterward, stop in at Royal Copenhagen, also on the square, and browse for the famous blue and white porcelain dinnerware. Hopefully, you will be lucky enough to see a live demonstration going on as you enter the flagship store. BY EMMA REYNOLDS

my cancer was affecting them and how much my treatments were costing. I didn’t want them to worry about anything more than the cancer I was battling, and I don’t want other families to worry about anything other than beating cancer. Anthony Rizzo visits a young patient at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Q: Can you give us examples of how the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation raises funds and supports families?

A

Anthony Rizzo

t the age of 27, Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is a World Series champion, three-time All-Star and cancer survivor. Drafted by the Red Sox organization in 2007 as a top minor league draft pick, Rizzo’s life as he knew it came to a screeching halt in April 2008 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Luckily, the baseball star was in remission by September of that same year. In 2012, the year the Florida native was traded to the Chicago Cubs, the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation was founded. It’s run by Rizzo, his family and friends, and his management team. Q: When did you realize you wanted to start your own charity? A: I started my own charity because the thing that affected me the most when I was battling cancer was the pain and hardship that my family had to endure. I really wanted to have an organization that focused on the family aspect of battling cancer because without my own family, I wouldn’t have been able to beat it.

Q: How did your cancer affect your family? A: When I found out at age 18 that I had cancer, it not only flipped my world upside down but my family’s world as well. My parents selflessly took care of me and stood by my side through every treatment. However, I knew that by taking care of me they weren’t taking care of themselves anymore. I worried about how

112 CHICAGOMODmagazine.com VOLUME 1.1

A: We have three main events that we hold during the year to help raise money for the foundation: the Cook-Off for Cancer, the Walk-Off for Cancer and the Laugh-Off for Cancer. I am happy to say that, in the past year alone, we raised $1.5 million. With these funds, we are able to grant money for families who are struggling. We want them to know that they have a helping hand.

Q: The Cubs winning their first World Series in 108 years was a huge accomplishment. What has that experience been like?

A: The experience has been surreal. We always said 2016 was the year, but when we finished that World Series seventh game I had no words. It is an indescribable experience, but we are ready to get back on that field and start working on another championship.

Q: What moments do you look forward to and enjoy most in your charity work? A: I look forward to seeing the children on the oncology floor at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago once a month. I like to remind them that I was once in their position too and that if I can beat cancer, then they can too. My favorite part of the hospital visit is, after I give the children an autograph, they give me one too by signing my jersey. It means a lot to me.

Q: What else would you like people to know about you and the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation? A: I want people to know that my family and I created this foundation so parents never have to choose between going to work, paying their rent or being by their child’s side. No one should ever have to choose. For more information on the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, visit Rizzo44.com. To read more about Anthony Rizzo, visit us online at ChicagoMODMagazine.com.
