CELEBRATING THE DISCERNING EYE This issue has always been one of my favorites. Spotlighting collectible items ranging from vintage exotic cars and rare pieces of art that grace the walls of Christie’s to a 30-year-old unopened bottle of single malt, it speaks to the discerning eye and a true appreciation for luxury. These are the qualities that inspired a man like Charles Royce to see past the shambles of a property neglected for decades and invest $11.5 million in renovations, creating what’s now one of the world’s premier properties: the Ocean House in Rhode Island.

We dedicate this issue to the memory of Leo Vagias, a special young man who left this world suddenly at the age of 19. Our thoughts and prayers are with our extended family and friends at the Waterside.

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS & ROSÉ Since premiering HudsonMOD in 2012, the first luxury lifestyle magazine to serve New Jersey, our anniversary bash has been a huge hit. This year’s event was more spectacular than ever. A private airport hangar was converted into a luxury showcase furnished by Roche Bobois and featured some of the top fashion and fine jewelry designers in the world presented by Neiman Marcus/Short Hills. Guests enjoyed plenty of eye candy from a jet parked at the entrance of the hangar to the Gorski’s sable fur draped beside a convertible Maserati (one of only 100 produced) from Celebrity Motor Car Company’s Maserati of Morris County. For more coverage of this spectacular event, see pages 72-73.

State provides travelers with some of the most luxurious summer destinations in the Northeast, including Watch Hill, home to one of Rhode Island’s most distinguished resorts, the Ocean House. Situated on the outer borders of Watch Hill, a small yet affluent seaside town located at the southern tip of the state, the Ocean House’s light yellow façade is a historic icon dating back to the Civil War. The bold Victorian-style exterior attests to the building’s abundant historical charms, instantly transporting visitors to an opulent past. Bold white columns, multiple balconies, a white wraparound porch and the impressive black-and-white Ocean House sign all add to the character of this beloved resort. Handling Tuition After Divorce “Given the high cost of college, these issues have become a larger part of family law cases involving children.”

G

iven the high cost of college, payment of tuition after parents divorce has become a larg-

er part of family law cases involving children. What are the respective parents’ obligations? How much should divorced parents contribute? Does the amount vary depending on how expensive the college is? Steven M. Resnick, a legal attorney specializing in family law, offers his insights.

When parents divorce, are students entitled to receive more government and school financial aid? This depends on the school and the living situation at the time of the event. It is important to try to work together if parents are remarried to ensure the correct income is reported to the college for financial aid purposes. How is the amount of each divorced parent’s contribution determined? Parties can agree on how it will be paid and what, if any, contribution they ex-

If there is no agreement, then the family court will decide using a list of factors to make the determination such as the ability to pay, the relationship between the child and the paying parent, and the education level of the parents, to name a few. Are divorced parents obliged to contribute to post-graduate tuition as well? They used to have more exposure on this where the law included payment for graduate school such as law school in proper circumstances. A new law has limited that exposure and placed the burden on the child in issue. Is the tuition contribution separate and apart from alimony? Alimony is included in the income of the

achos Figueras, the Argentine-born top-ranked polo player and model, recently tackled something even

more challenging than the sport he’s been playing most of his life. He recently co-authored (with Jessica Whitman) High Season, the first romance novel in his series entitled The Polo Season, featuring a character who clearly resembles him. “That [romance] takes me out of my comfort zone, whereas I’ve been playing polo all my life,” he says. “For polo, the biggest challenge is finding the best horses. For romance, it’s making sure the reader falls in love with the story.” High Season hit shelves in May. The next two novels, Wild One and Ride Free, followed in June and July. The series captures the chic and glam jet-set life of the polo circuit and features a steamy-hot player named Alejandro Del Campo. Although the story delves into Figueras’ life to capture the color, lifestyle and specifics of the polo world on and off the field, the real heartthrob and the fictional one take separate roads. “Fortunately, my life doesn’t have nearly so much heartache,” says Figueras. In the novel, Del Campo is a widower. In real life, Figueras is happily married to his wife Delfina Blaquier, whom he has four children with. Still, Figueras was inspired to write a romance novel in part because of his wife. He met his spouse at a polo match, but that’s not the only reason he wanted to create the series.

GUIDE TO BESPOKE BY BIJAN ZAMANIAN

“Bespoke is much more than suiting and accessories: it’s a lifestyle choice.”

HUDSONMOD.com SUMMER 2016

T

he epitome of elegance and luxury in menswear, bespoke practically begs to be pronounced with a sophisti-

cated British accent. Because bespoke garments are tailored to the individual buyer’s specifications, the quality and fit are far superior to that of any off-the-rack suit. First, there’s the canvas that runs throughout the garment. Made of horse hair and cotton that’s treated multiple times, it creates a shaping structure that comports with your frame the more often you wear it. A store-bought suit is flimsy and shapeless by comparison. Another notable option are surgeon cuffs. The name originated during World War II when military doctors wore sport jackets while performing surgery and needed the buttons to be functional so sleeves could be rolled up. Even though you’re not likely to use the buttons in this way, they’re an attention-getter. In fact, keeping the last sleeve button (or two) undone is a subtle way of letting people know that your suit is bespoke. Think of it as a sartorial wink. Pic stitching runs along the edge of the lapels and side and breast pockets in intricate hand-fashioned detail. Many lower-end suit stores are adding machine pic stitching to mimic a high-end look, but this

50 HUDSONMOD.com SUMMER 2016

doesn’t compare to a hand-done pic stitch. Other bespoke signatures include a soft shoulder that lets you remove the garment elegantly with no pulling, slightly longer side pockets similar to those on a Tom Ford suit, and a barchetta chest pocket (“little boat” in Italian) shaped with a slight curve resembling the bow of a sailboat. More than anything else, though, being a man that “goes bespoke” is about having something that is one-of-a-kind. It’s about your garment embodying your personality and having control over how you want to be perceived. In today’s business world, perception is reality and walking into a room wearing immaculate clothing is the surest way to make a fantastic first impression. Fit and construction aren’t the only ways to personalize your bespoke garment. You can line the inside of your jacket with family photos, have your wedding date stitched under your collar or have contrast stitching on each buttonhole to compliment your accessories. Looking for ways to change up the traditional power pinstripe business suit? The new trend is separates. A patterned jacket with solid trousers used to have no place in the office. Nowadays, it is acceptable for men to dress more “on-trend” and add color to their wardrobe. Wearing separates is a great way to exemplify power while still

“More than anything else, being a man that ‘goes bespoke’ is about having something that is one-of-akind.”

Custom liners set the suit’s tone when you take off the jacket. You can go from subtle to daring to show off your personality.

Double buttons and buttons on a 45 degree angle are unique features you won’t see on off-therack shirts.

Contrast stitching on button holes and lapels add a custom detail and can match the contrast fabric.

BESPOKE VS. MADE-TO-MEASURE In simple terms, made-to-measure works off a pattern with an initial consultation where measurements are taken for the suit to be created. A bespoke suit has multiple fittings where the garment is tailored accordingly in between to get the perfect fit. 52

Contrast fabric vests elevate the look of a suit. Add the jacket liner to the back section of the vest to match the jacket for a bold look.

Angle pockets, ticket pockets and double pockets are trends that add a unique touch.

Contrast fabric on plackets and cuffs offer a pop of color and can achieve a more casual look if needed.

But you also have to hire the right kind of people – people who not only “get it” but live it personally as well. Maoli quips, “You can’t teach height! THE CORE (FRENCH) FOUR Louis XIII, Hermès, Saint-Louis and Puiforcat have partnered to create four stunning sets called the L’Odyssée d’Un Roi celebrating the renowned cognac’s traveling heritage. Each French brand added its own special touch to the sets, which will be showcased in their own worldwide traveling exhibition. Sotheby’s will auction three off in September. The L’Odyssée d’Un Roi is comprised of a leather hand-stitched trunk by Hermès, a white-gold pipette by Puiforcat and mouth-blown crystal decanters etched with world maps and four glasses by Saint-Louis. The decanter will be filled with an extremely rare blend of Louis XIII formulated by cellar master Baptiste Loiseau and his predecessor Pierrette Trichet. The cases go on display in May in New York before being auctioned off. Money raised from the auction will benefit the Film Foundation, a nonprofit developed by Martin Scorsese to help protect classic films.

No longer do you or a family member have to be a maestro to enjoy live piano music in your home. Steinway & Sons has developed the Spirio. Dubbed by the company as the “world’s finest player piano system” and operated with an iPad, the Spirio allows the user to select prerecorded performances by pianists including Jenny Lin and Robert Glasper and then watch as it replays the exact performance mimicking all key and pedal movements. You can also manually play the Spirio if you’re so inclined, giving you the best of both worlds.

“How is Bobby? Gloria? Ally?” They have no idea how that makes me feel so loved.

Q: You’re known for throwing one of the hottest parties in the Hamptons. Tell us about your annual Luxury Luncheon. A: One of the perks of being famous is the wonderful free products people send me. I wanted to share that experience, so I created a giant gifting suite for my closest girlfriends with a gift bag valued at $5,000. It turned into what is now my annual Luxury Luncheon. Lunch is always served by the finest caterers like Carlyle off the Green, Chef David Burke and

ou may know Jill Zarin as one of the original cast members of the hit Bravo reality show The Real Housewives of New York City, but there is much more to her than just an effervescent reality-TV personality. Her resume is extensive and shows her to be a serious entrepreneur. From Skweez Couture to Bed Bath & Beyond’s Jill Zarin home-product line to her own fine jewelry collection, she does it all. She co-authored Secrets of a Jewish Mother with her sister and mother, helps her husband Bobby with his long-time family-owned business Zarin Fabrics, and is full-time mom to a daughter. Even with that full plate, Zarin finds time to give back to charities she is deeply devoted to. One is the Eric Trump Foundation, where she serves as a member of the Executive Committee and helps raise money through her notable annual Luxury Luncheon event hosted at her Hamptons estate every summer. HudsonMOD caught up with Zarin during a break from her busy life to chat about her successes, throwing one of the hottest Hamptons soirees, and more. Q: After your experience on the Real Housewives of New York, would you venture into reality-TV again? A: I loved being on TV, and more importantly, the way fans respond to me and my family every day with love, respect and kindness. Fans ask me everyday on social media or in person,

Q: What can you tell us about this year’s luncheon? A: The first thing you should expect to see is the gigantic tent overlooking the bay filled with live music and a lot of passed food. This year, we will be adding a $100 raffle ticket where one person will win the goodies inside “Jill’s Closet.” It will be filled with thousands of dollars worth of luxurious products, and the proceeds will go directly to the Eric Trump Foundation for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Q: Why is it important to give back to charitable organizations? A: Money never motivated me. I always worked hard and spend less than I make so I don’t have anxiety. What keeps me up is worrying about people who are suffering from illness. Children are the most vulnerable and have not had a chance to see the world. I have always admired Eric Trump and how, as a young adult, he saw the world and made it his personal mission to help children. I was compelled to come forward and offer anything we could do to support him.

Q: You’re also a successful entrepreneur with numerous ventures. How do you juggle all of these responsibilities? A: I just do one thing at time and have incredible people who work for us. Zarin Fabrics has a new online store with incredible gifts for everyone. My favorite is a furry thing that you put into a stroller or on the floor for a baby gift. Please check out www.zarinfabrics.com and sign up for our newsletters. We still travel the country promoting Secrets of a Jewish Mother that I co-wrote with my sister Lisa Wexler and my mom Gloria Kamen. We love to speak at any organization, but UJA, JCC and Hadassah are our specialties. For more information, please contact jill@jillzarin.com.
