Five and Counting... Most would recognize him by his bold sense of style, but I was equally impressed by Marcus Samuelsson’s high energy, ability to multitask and, most of all, his compassion for others. After finding much success through cooking, Marcus wanted to give back to Harlem, the place he calls home. It was a pleasure getting to know him and his longtime friend Herb Karlitz, with whom he founded one of Harlem’s biggest festivals, Harlem EatUp! Together, they have great synergy that has helped make the festival such a positive event for the area and its residents. Philanthropy has always been a major part of MOD Media’s foundation. Giving back to the community in which you work is so important. Recently, to celebrate the launch of HudsonMOD’s sister publication, ChicagoMOD, we teamed up with one of the city’s most worthwhile nonprofits, the 100 Club of Chicago, which helps families of fallen first responders. It was a night to remember, as some of Chicago’s top celebrities including Taylor Kinney and his Chicago Fire co-stars came out to help. Looking ahead to the summer, MOD Media will continue its celebrations on the waterfront as HudsonMOD marks its fifth anniversary at Maritime Parc in Jersey City. We have a lot in store for this milestone, which surely will leave a lasting impression on new and returning guests. Follow HudsonMOD on social media to gain a behind-the-scenes look as the festivities unfold.

The World’s Most Coveted Carryalls Even if you don’t take them out the door with you every day, each intricately stitched and sourced purse is a coveted carryall no matter how often you use it. They know no season, they know no era, they know no fad. Designer bags, timeless and elegant, are the investments of a lifetime. u

LOUIS VUITTON x JEFF KOONS COLLECTION In 1965, Audrey Hepburn asked Louis Vuitton to create a smaller version of the iconic Keepall bag that was first released in the 1930s, which resulted in the creation of the Speedy. Since then, the Speedy has been recreated in different sizes and prints and remains one of the most iconic shapes in the brand’s history. Louis Vuitton’s recent collaboration with contemporary artist Jeff Koons saw the Speedy 30 come to life in a new way. Koons brought imagery from his Gazing Ball paintings — a series of large-scale hand-painted reproductions of works by the Old Masters — to a range of Louis Vuitton products: the Speedy 30, the Keepall and the Neverfull. His collection features interpretations of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Titian’s Mars, Venus, and Cupid, Peter Paul Rubens’ The Tiger Hunt, Fragonard’s Girl With Dog and Vincent Van Gogh’s A Wheatfield With Cypresses. MATISSE AND AMERICAN ART As one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, French-born Henri Matisse (1869-1954) occupies a profound role in the evolution of American modern art since 1907. His use of vibrant colors, flat patterns, fluid lines and abstract forms has been a model for American artists. The Montclair Art Museum is showcasing the exhibition, Matisse and American Art, until June 18. Here, you will find Matisse’s iconic work arranged beside works by prominent American artists who drew inspiration from the French master. Dr. Gail Stavitsky, chief curator of the museum and the exhibit, says this is the first show to examine Matisse’s influence on 34 American artists from 1907 to present. “The show answers the question why Matisse has been so influential, possibly more so than Picasso, with a long generation of artists who range from artists in the twentieth century, like Max Weber, to contemporary times like Sophie Matisse, the artist’s great-granddaughter,” she says. Stavitsky walks us through three of Matisse’s most notable works and discusses how American artists continue to benefit from his legacy. NUDE IN A WOOD u Henri Matisse Matisse was known for his non-naturalistic colors and simplified forms. “Matisse’s painting Nude in a Wood is a classic example of what’s known as his ‘fauve’ period, meaning ‘wild beast,’” says Stavitsky. “It was the first group of paintings for which Matisse became very well known, with these really bold colors. Nude in a Wood has boldly simplified nudes in a composition of green, purple, mauve and pink, the kind of non-naturalistic colors used to indicate landscape and light and shade.” Matisse’s first oneman exhibition in America was in 1908, where American artists such as Max Weber had a chance to be introduced to his art. “It was shown in Matisse’s first one-man exhibition in America in 1908, so very early in his career, at gallery 291 in New York run by Alfred Stieglitz,” she says. APOLLO IN MATISSE’S STUDIO u Max Weber Max Weber, an American artist who studied with Matisse, borrowed many of the master’s ideas for his own nude paintings. “I’m comparing Nude in a Wood in terms of color and form to Max Weber’s Apollo in Matisse’s Studio because that is a view of Matisse’s school and Max Weber was among the American artists who actually studied with Matisse,” says Stavitsky. “There is an unidentified artist who is painting from a plaster cast of Apollo from ancient Greek culture. Maybe [it’s] a surprise that Matisse would be taking that academic approach, but he felt it was very important to know the fundamentals of art practice. And if you look at that painting you can see it is very boldly painted where green is used to indicate shadows on the sculpture, so again those uses of green and purple and all those vivid non-naturalistic colors. [It is] very much a fauve style but an academic Greek subject, so it combines the idea that you have to learn the fundamentals before you can experiment.” Max Weber (1881-1961) Apollo in Matisse’s Studio, 1908 Oil on canvas 23 x 18 in. Americans could first see a lot of Matisse’s paintings in one place. It’s also a painting that was bought by the Museum of Modern Art in 1949. It had a big influence on abstract expressionists, like Mark Rothko, which is why I chose [No 44. (Two Darks in Red)] for the show, which is a very similar shade of red as The Red Studio.” Stavitsky explains that Mark Rothko went to the Museum of Modern Art in 1949 after the work was bought and would spend hours staring at the painting as if he were immersed in music. “This whole idea of music being a really abstract art form was inspirational for abstract artists like Mark Rothko,” she says. “He painted this work in 1955, a year after Matisse died when many

people were thinking about him.”

Henri Matisse Matisse, though known for his interesting subjects, is predominantly recognized for his use of vibrant colors. “The reason that I chose to compare Pianist and Checker Players and No. 44 (Two Darks in Red) is they are hanging together in the exhibition,” says Stavitsky. “There’s a part of the show that addresses Matisse’s use of color, particularly the color red. You can see [that] in a variety of shades and hues in his painting, Pianist and Checker Players, which was done in southern France in Nice in 1924.” The painting shows the interior of his apartment, with his favorite model, Henriette Darricarrière, on the piano and two young men playing checkers. “There’s just a burst of red color and all kinds of wonderful patterns of the rug and the wallpaper,” she explains. “[It has] a variety of images that Matisse balances and organizes so well to create order and harmony.” Henri Matisse (1869-1954) Pianist and Checker Players, 1924 Oil on canvas 29 x 36 3/8 in. MADAME DE POMPADOUR u Henri Matisse Stavitsky ends on Madame de Pompadour to showcase Matisse’s evolution as an artist, as this was a work he did in his eighties. “It’s a cutout,” she says. “Madame de Pompadour was a great patron of the arts in the 18th century, and Matisse has a painted ink brush photo of her based on his photo of his favorite model of the time, Lydia Delectorskaya, his Russian studio assistant. “It is a very raw, vital work,” Stavitsky continues. “It shows how Matisse, who is very old at this time, was making such young, vigorous and vital work and constantly reinventing himself with his last great body of work known as the cutouts. He would cut out bold, simplified forms from painted pieces of paper prepared by his assistant. He called it drawing and sculpting with color.” Henri Matisse (1869-1954) Madame de Pompadour, 1951 Painted, cut and pasted paper, brush and ink 35 x 29 in. Stavitsky finds similarities to Matisse’s work in works by his great-granddaughter Sophie from 2014. “I’m pairing Madame de Pompadour with Sophie Matisse’s cut-paper collage, which is the

It happens to be based on some lyrics from a favorite song of hers, but the fact that she includes the words is a very conceptual approach.” Sophie has an impressive dual legacy of being the greatgranddaughter of Henri Matisse and step-granddaughter of Marcel Duchamp, the French Dadaist. Her art simultaneously embodies the visual aspect of Henri Matisse and the conceptual idea from Marcel Duchamp that art is a language. “This piece is making its world premiere. It’s never been shown before,” Stavitsky says. Sophie Matisse (b. 1965) Weather or Not, 2014 Gouache on paper, collage 12 x 16 in. a tornado had touched down and crossed the river heading north. In its wake, it left one dead and deposited all manner of debris into the river. Outerlimits owner Mike Fiore was undaunted, as was the boat’s pilot, offshore powerboat racer Brian Forehand: a tall, handsome, tanned mechanic who worked with Marker 17 Marine, a dealership in Wilmington. The day was cloudy and promised more inclement weather. Forehand closed the hatch on the canopied top of the SV 43 (the SV stands for super vee) — an extreme-performance, stepped-hull (to reduce drag) race boat powered by Mercury Racing 1650 engines — and headed out alone on the Pamlico River. Going solo was unusual. Most records had been set by two-person driver-throttler teams. But Forehand

was more comfortable driving and throttling the boat by himself. Forehand spent less than a minute in the cockpit, but that’s all he would need. He set the world record at 172.876 mph — a hair faster than the previous record of 171.88. By late morning, the winds had picked up. What’s worse, one of the SV 43’s propellers had broken after colliding with a submerged object. Forehand and Fiore knew the boat could go still faster. So they came back the next day and beat the world record they had just set—this time at a speed in excess of 180 mph. “It was quite an eventful weekend,” says operations manager Dan Kleitz on a recent weekday at the company’s boatyard in Bristol, Rhode Island, referring to the company’s world-record achievement. Machinery whirs loudly in the background. Outerlimits is hard at work on a wide array of models, including the 2017 SV 50, a direct descendant of the 43 that was used by Forehand to break the record. At 24, he was the youngest chef ever to receive a three-star restaurant review from the New York Times, was named Best Chef: New York City in 2003 by the James Beard Foundation, and served as guest chef for the first state dinner of the Barack Obama presidency in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. All the awards, accolades and fame aside, it was his mother who encouraged him to remain true to his roots and upbringing and eventually leave the fine dining scene at Aquavit. “My mother always challenged the fact and asked me, ‘Why does everything have to be expensive? Why normal people we grew up with, people who work in the post office, and plumbers, electricians and teachers. uelsson conceived the idea for Harlem EatUp! at around 2:30 a.m. at an after party during the 2014 South Beach Food & Wine Festival. “Marcus and I were chatting about Harlem and the transformation it has been experiencing,” says Karlitz. “We are both involved in a lot of food festivals, and it just hit us that Harlem needs its own to really shine the spotlight on what’s happening, especially from a culinary perspective.” “EatUp! has been something that both Herb and I have been thinking about for a long time,” echoes Samuelsson. “Herb has been legendary in the sense of starting festivals and events like NYC Wine & Food Festival, and we felt that, in order to have a bigger impact in our community, the festival was the way to go. For us to go from ideation to actual is amazing and one of our major accomplishments.” The two men pooled their individual talents: Samuelsson’s experience as a chef and restaurateur and Karlitz’s reputation as head of Karltiz & Company, his own event marketing firm known for leveraging its extraordinary network to create unforgettable experiences and marketing programs for clients and their customers. Harlem EatUp!’s tagline, “Celebrating Harlem’s Food, Culture and Spirit,” does just that. The festival has evolved rapidly in a short period with 300 volunteers, an expected 10,000-plus attendees this year and some exciting new additions to 2017’s lineup. “Our original intent was to highlight the amazing culinary offerings, but we have also woven in local entertainment and the arts from the beginning,” says Karlitz. “One of the most exciting things we’ve added this year is a concert at the hisMarcus Samuelsson serves up Red Rooster’s signature dish, Fried Yardbird.

GOLD COASTING Real-estate development on NJ’s Gold Coast continues at a record pace. “When you have housing stock that hasn’t been replenished or refreshed in a decade or two, you have people say, ‘I want something newer and better.’” Steven Fulop is the mayor of Jersey City, and what he’s saying about his town isn’t new. As early as the 1980s, local politicians of every stripe were predicting huge growth for the geographical expanse popularly known today as NJ’s Gold Coast, of which Jersey City is a part. They enthused how ripe it was for super development mostly because of its proximity to Manhattan. Predicted for such contiguous Hudson River waterfront towns as Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City and West New York was a virtual architectural and demographic facelift, and the ‘80s and ‘90s were the time for people and businesses to move in while rents were still affordable. Preview opening appointments are now being accepted. Residents will be able to take advantage of savings created by a 20-year tax abatement program. The initial 10-year period is fixed, with increases kicking in over the second 10-year period. According to K. Hovnanian

What should a prospective buyer know about the Gold Coast? When I meet with buyers who are considering a potential move out of the highly competitive Manhattan and Brooklyn markets, I often find that they have a misconception about the Gold Coast. They think that because the Gold Cost offers a lower price per square foot than Manhattan or Brooklyn, it will be the case that buying in New Jersey will be less competitive. When these same buyers start looking at Gold Coast properties, though, they quickly learn that the bidding process in highly desirable areas such as downtown Jersey City and Hoboken can be just as competitive as in Manhattan or Brooklyn. They can encounter low inventory, hot listings that are sold in a single day, and overheated auctions that can turn into bidding wars. These buyers learn that having an experienced and knowledgeable realtor to assist them and be their advocate is not just a benefit but also a necessity. As an example, I have advised my clients to look for opportunities to invest in areas that are convenient to transportation for commuters. Typically in flourishing urban areas, if you follow the train line you will tend to see values appreciate over time. That has been the case in the Gold Coast in recent years, and I expect that trend to continue in the future.

Trend Spotlight:

FLORALS The languid days and pastel colors of the Côte d’Azur set the tone for this year’s take on summer florals, which often get a bad reputation for being too loud, too bright and too sweet. This season, designers have toned down this perennial favorite with more subdued hues. Tones of powder blues and violet — think subdued hydrangeas — evoke an easy, breezy south of France vibe while staying true to the soft and feminine roots of florals.

Trend Spotlight:

CABANA STRIPES New Yorkers’ uberluxe play-grand for the rich, the Hamptons pair perfectly with this summer’s take on cabana stripes. Although stripes have a nautical vibe, designers this season opted for black instead of navy, offering a more elegant take on the trend. Whether or not they’re bright, stripes evoke feelings of fun. Even better, they are not relegated to casual sportswear. Cabana stripes mixed with gowns take black-tie affairs along the water to a new level!

WHITE SHIRT DRESSES South Beach’s more hipster cousin, Miami’s downtown arts district is the perfect backdrop for the ease and comfort of the fresh crisp white shirtdress replacing the ubiquitous form-fitting dress of recent years. When paired with a great heel, this summery wardrobe staple is sexy and works on all body types. Pair with other white accessories for a chic, modern and monochromatic look, and voila, you have the antithesis to those all-black monochromatic winter looks!

SEXY ATHLEISURE The colors that pulsate on the streets of Havana vibrate in this season’s sexy athleisure trend, borrowing the best from its more casual athleisure cousin by utilizing athletic fabrics for form and comfort (think neoprene or anything with stretch and shine) and cutting them in sexy new ways! Pair with a heel and remember to keep the look sporty with other bright-color accessories and oversized geometric jewelry. This winning combination will keep you sizzling long after dark.

‘80s CHICK The City of of Lights, a.k.a. Paris, sets the tone for wearing shades of black in this summer’s ‘80s chic revival. It’s less Molly Ringwald and more Catherine Deneuve. MANSION IN MAY

As the last surviving structure on Millionaires’ Row — an old-time term referring to the Gilded Age mansions that lined the streets on Route 124 in Morristown, NJ — Alnwick Hall – The Abbey, with its vibrant stained-glass windows and ornate medieval façade, intrigued onlookers for years. BY SARA BRISOLLA

D

esigner Istvan Francer once said, “I appreciate history, but you have to bring your own experience into your rooms.” Alnwick Hall – The Abbey, the setting of this

year’s Mansion in May project, is no exception. Originally owned by Edward and Rosalie Behr Meany, the 22,000-square-foot mansion was designed by the famed New York architect Percy Griffin, who added embellishments such as Heinigke & Bowen stained-glass windows, several grand fireplaces, crown moldings and an intricately carved oak staircase. All survive to this day. Through the years, the Abbey exchanged hands multiple times before being sold to its current owner in 2008. Since then, the mansion and its opulent luxuries (30 rooms, 11 baths, 6 storage rooms, 5 garages and 8 horse stables) have been closed to the public. Until now. Its rich history and mysterious charm made the mansion an ideal choice for the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center’s Mansion in May, one of New Jersey’s most famous interior-design projects. Mansion in May is the signature fundraising event for the Women’s Association. Different interior designers outfit the rooms and it is available for the public to view through May.

When the month is over, the items in each room are sold and the space is restored to its original look. More than 25,000 visitors will set foot into the grand estate to view the designers’ stunning interiors. Guests easily could spend more than two hours viewing the entire redesigned mansion. While the more than 40 rooms currently on public view each tell an interesting story, three of them — Gilded Blues Gathering Room, L’Abbey En Rose and Happily Ever After — are especially captivating. The Abbey’s current owner graciously allowed the Women’s Association to use the estate for Mansion in May, which has enjoyed much success since its inception in 1974. Katie Nolle, Vice President of the Women’s Association and this year’s General Co-Chair for Mansion in May, says the Abbey stood out from other mansions because of its intricate detailing such as stained-glass windows and ornate ceilings. “Each room inside the mansion makes you feel like you could have it in your house,” she says. While Mansion in May serves as a show house, its purpose is to raise funds for the Morristown Medical Center.

From the Owner:

Tom Maoli

What’s your favorite attribute of the home? The facade… it is a castle! How was your experience with lending your home to the Mansion in May project, which ultimately benefits the Morristown Medical Center? Excellent. The hospital is an amazing organization and the cause is well worth it.

Nolle, who is dedicated to the organization’s Contributing with Passion ideology, says the Abbey “describes the organization’s motto in a heartbeat,” especially given its proximity to the medical facility.

patient care and generate data demonstrating successful outcomes. To date, the Women’s Association has raised more than $25 million for the Morristown Medical Center, making it the no. 1 donator to the hospital’s foundation. Mansion in May is hosted every other year. In the off mansion years, the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical remains active with their businesses, the Bargain Box Thrift Boutique, three gift shops within the hospital as well as additional fundraising events such as a Farm to Table Dining experience with local celebrity chefs. “The Abbey symbolizes a time not only of power and privilege, but also of possibilities and progress,” say Nolle and her co-chair Megan Cassie Schubiger. “It exemplifies an era when the impossible became possible: transcontinental rail and telephone systems, motorized coaches and other revolutionary innovations.” It’s the perfect tie-in to this year’s Nursing Excellence innovation.

GILDED BLUES GATHERING ROOM The Gilded Blues Gathering Room, designed by Rachel Kapner along with her team of designers, Mary Lavecchia, Lois Darling and Ann Campbell of CWI.Design of in New Providence, used Benjamin Moore’s Starry Night Blue paint, a perfect fit for this remarkable room. With swirls of dark blue shades and bright pops of gold, the Gathering Room represented a marriage of the Gilded and Modern ages. Kapner, who was a past recipient of the Tulip Award (Mansion in May’s highest designer honor), stated how she drew her inspiration for the room by finding “the balance of color to bring out as well as enhance the already existing beautiful details that just needed to be brought to life.” The curtains, furniture and accessories all boasted shades of gold and blue. The stunning light fixtures hanging from the ceilings and walls were all custom made pieces, while the piano placed in the corner was a symbol of the music enjoyed in the Gilded Age.

L’ABBEY EN ROSE L’Abbey En Rose enchanted any guest who stepped foot into the mansion’s bedroom, which featured a beautiful soft color palette of light pink with touches of ivory, blush and gold — colors that are most popular this season. Sam Ciardi, Creative Director of Samuel Robert Signature Spaces in Millburn, said he allowed the room to speak to him while creating his design. To add to the overall aesthetic of the room, Ciardi mixed his soft-hued color palette with dramatic pieces throughout the room that helped them to resonate with viewers. HAPPILY EVER AFTER Diane Durocher of Diane Durocher Interiors in Ramsey created Happily Ever After, a bridal dressing room that was inspired by her own daughter’s wedding day. “When the ladies asked me to do the dressing room, I thought, well, for what occasion would you want to use a beautiful dressing room?” said Durocher. “We decided to go with a bridal dressing room because it’s for a special occasion. It was fun to accessorize and think about what it would all entail. Would your husband-to-be send a lovely card or send you some flowers? You’ll notice my daughter was my muse. All of the photographs are of her getting ready for her big day. That was the inspiration, along with the architecture itself: having this great room and the three windows. Coming off the master, everything just sort of evolved.” Using the palette of beige, white and gold, the medallion in the center of the ceiling was throughout the rest of the mansion. In May, the world’s most valuable gems went up for auction: the Apollo & Artemis diamonds. With their exceptionally striking colors, the blue and pink earrings were undoubtedly the most popular items at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction in Geneva. Selling for $57,425,478, the pair became the most valuable earrings ever sold at auction. The Apollo blue diamond weighed in at 14.54 carats, while its twin, the Artemis pink diamond, weighed 16 carats. One thing’s for sure, the new owner of these earrings will instantly look and feel like a Greek goddess. For more information, please visit Sothebys.com.

The restaurant told the New York Times that the menu will feature brand-new dishes, including filet mignon, lobster, scallops in snail butter and steak tartare. ulie Alongi not only overcame her own battle with cancer, but also helped her son win his fight with leukemia when he was three years old. Those trying experiences inspired her to dedicate her time and efforts to helping other children overcome terminal illnesses with her notfor-profit organization, Rosepetals. For the past twelve years, Rosepetals has assisted more than six thousand families with specialized care, toy purchases and celebrations for children, as well as financial aid for medical expenses, rent, food, clothing and at times funeral costs. HudsonMOD spoke with Alongi about her life’s passion and how Rosepetals has affected the lives of so many. Q: You’ve been a cancer survivor for more than 30 years. How did your fight against cancer help establish Rosepetals?

Q: Your son beat cancer. What advice would you give to other parents who are fighting the same battle? A: It is most important to to ask as many questions as needed. Knowledge is, after all, power. A parent of a child with cancer can say a daily prayer to St. Therese, as she will without fail make her presence known and somehow display a rose as proof of her intervention.

Julie Alongi

A: After my own personal experience with cancer, I decided I wanted to share with so many others all I had learned. The idea for Rosepetals naturally emerged from that. We have been a notfor-profit charity for 12 years. The spiritual inspiration has always been St. Therese of the Little Flower who continually taught that the way to peace and happiness is to cultivate the heart of a child. The hearts of children fill all of Rosepetals’ activities.

Q: How many families have received aid from the notfor-profit organization? Could you share an experience with a family that benefited from Rosepetals? A: To date, Rosepetals has been able to serve over six thousand children and their families. Virtually all of our children face end-stage terminal disease. One of my favorites is a special surviving young man named Danny who has been with us now for 12 years. He has had three brain surgeries for a tumor removal which has left him blind in one eye. We are waiting for the results from his last surgery, which replaced two arteries in the brain. He is a gifted young man who plans one day to be an illustrator for animated movies.

Q: How has this organization impacted the lives of these families and yours? A: The impact of Rosepetals upon the families of the children becomes most profound and life changing as parents learn to face the inevitable together with their child. Working with the children and the families under these most difficult circumstances has enabled me to develop a deep sense of compassion and patience, particularly for those in my charge.

Q: What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer hospice counselor? A: The children invariably never complain and are a true inspiration. They teach me how to live and how I should behave in the face of any obstacle. I have discovered that I cannot live without them.

Q: Do you plan to expand Rosepetals beyond the New York and New Jersey area? A: Growing Roses is our project to increase the impact and influence of Rosepetals Inc., to meet the expanding need for quality pediatric hospice care. The more Roses, the more we are able to care for the children and parents. Roses refers to the daily services and activities we provide for children and parents such as frequent bedside visitations, specialized counseling for family members and children, seasonal celebrations, supervised social gatherings and games. Roses also refers to guidance and assistance with imminent life choices, financial aid and funeral arrangements as necessary. Roses stem from donations and increase our ability to care for these special children.

Q: What are your future goals for the organization? A: Rosepetals is seeking to acquire a property that can be utilized as our organizational headquarters, which will also serve as a full support hospice residency for terminally ill children and their families. Families can then spend their last moments together with dignity in a quiet, comfortable and nurturing environment rather than alone in a hospital.

Q: How does someone volunteer with Rosepetals? A: No volunteer is permitted onto the wards or to assist without training. What Rosepetals really needs most is financial donations, particularly to facilitate specialized cases. To donate to Rosepetals, please visit Rosepetals-Hospice.org or send a check payable to Rosepetals, Inc. to 825 Bloomfield Avenue, #107, Verona, NJ 07044. All donations are tax deductible.
