FOOD SCENE La Veta Farmers' Market opens May 16th from 3:00-6:00pm in the courtyard of the Francisco Fort Museum and the Library at 310 So. Main St. Meet Scot Mangold, Executive Chef, The Timbers Restaurant and Tavern, Cuchara, When you ask Scot what his favorite type of food is to cook, his answer is always "good food". Through his travels, he has developed an appreciation for all cuisines and brings this experience to his cooking. Scot uses fresh, local ingredients,

correct seasoning and proper cooking techniques to create a culinary experience that fits his philosophy of "simple is always best'. Scot's career began in 1999 when he graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, SC. He moved to Panama City Beach, FL, and trained under legendary Atlanta chef, Paul Albrecht. After a year working under Chef Albrecht's tutelage, Scot moved to Denver and was given his first Executive Chef position at the Colorado Private Reserve, a very high end private club. After it closed, he worked for restaurateurs Cyd Anderson and Rachel Woolcott at Restaurant Aix. For the next three years, Scot combined his passion for cooking with his love of playing golf. He was Executive Chef of Heritage Eagle Bend, a semi private golf course in Aurora, worked the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and Bear Dance Golf Club in Larkspur. From 2004-2012, Scot moved back to his hometown of Evansville, IN, to work as Executive Chef at Firefly, a southern grill restaurant. This was followed by an exciting opportunity to work as the Executive Sous Chef for SMG Evansville, a large scale catering company, where he catered to such celebrities as Mikhail Gorbechev, Sarah Palin, Kid Rock, and Hank Williams Jr. Scot could not stay away from Colorado. He returned in 2013 to work as Executive Chef of The Timber's. He is very excited about the menu he will offer this year to create the high quality culinary experience locals know they will get. Scot will use Aspenridge Beef products, which are upper choice, no antibiotics and no growth hormones for all his beef items. The Timber's menu will include lamb raised locally on the L&M Ranch in La Veta, striped bass from the San Luis Valley, and vegetables from the local markets.

GEOCACHING Gary Grady in Cuchara writes: Looking for a great individual or family activity? Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. You use a GPS device to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Some of the locations are called “biocaches” because they are natural formations instead of a container hidden by someone. The Cuchara Valley has a number of biocaches as well as geocaches. Geocaching is a great family activity and is free. Anyone of any age can get started by going to the website, www.geocaching.com. Once you register there for the free basic membership you can go to the “Hide & Seek a Cache” page and enter any zip code. About a dozen geocaches are hidden in the valley or nearby. Pick any geocache from the list on the web site and click on its name. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device and start heading to them. You will not need to enter the coordinates in the phone app, and it will actually help you navigate to the geocache with a compass and indicate how far you are from it When you find the geocache, sign the logbook that is hidden with it and return the geocache to its original location. Some of the geocaches have small trinkets you can swap for. Take one from the container and leave another in its place. You can then share your geocaching stories and photos online. Their intention was to create a live-in work of Drop Art, continuing an art concept they had developed earlier at the University of Kansas. Drop Art (sometimes called "droppings") was informed by the "happenings" of Allan Kaprow and the impromptu performances of John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, and Buckminster Fuller. "Flashing on the Sixties", a Tribal Document is one for the time capsule. Directed by Lisa Law, and based on her photographic book of the same name, "Flashing On The '60s" is an excellent, refreshing look back at the decade of love, peace, and social change…this program serves up fond memories to those who lived these events and provides a valuable history lesson to those too young to remember." - Billboard Magazine. Part 3: Panel Discussion: Local Commune Members Date and Time: May 17th, 2:00–3:30pm Location: Francisco Crossing, 300 So. Main St. This panel discussion includes representatives of four local communes. There were 4 or 5 major communes in Huerfano County with names like Libre, Red Rockers ... and folks such as Ken Snyder, Abbie Hoffman, Stewart Brand, Allen Ginsburg, and Baba Ram Dass were frequent visitors to Spanish Peaks Country. For another interesting view see - Huerfano - A Memoir of Life in the Counterculture (2004) by Roberta Price.

Timothy Miller, professor of religious studies at the University of Kansas, is the author of "The 60s Communes: Hippies and Beyond" and published two earlier books on intentional communities, including The Quest for Utopia in Twentieth-Century America to which this new volume is a successor. He co-directed the 60s Communes Project, an extensive documentation effort that preserved memories and artifacts from the 1960s-era communes.
