A Travel Writer's Love Affair What is it that you love about this place?” I asked that question my first night here and it put me on the road to experiencing the magic and wonders of Spanish Peaks Country. Hi! This is “Joe the Travel Writer” again, and in this issue I will be filling you in on some of the events, sites and things to do in Spanish Peaks Country this spring. Specifically, I am writing in more detail about the small town flavor of Walsenburg, which is the “Gateway to Spanish Peaks Country,” Lathrop State Park and the Scenic Highway of Legends.

Lanthrop State Park

Lathrop State Park is a popular place to enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, camping and hiking. Its Visitor Center boasts a historical mural and interactive interpretive displays for visitors of all ages. Walsenburg’s 9-hole Golf Course is located adjacent to the park and overlooks Martin Lake and the Spanish Peaks.

Mission: Wolf is a peaceful sanctuary for captive wolves and wolf-dog crosses, located about 14 miles north of Gardner. At present, they care for 32 wolves and wolf-dog crosses. A wolf visit can not be guaranteed, but the staff tries to take every visitor in to meet our ambassador wolves. The best days to meet a wolf are Wednesdays and Saturdays. The worst days are Mondays and Thursdays, when they're asleep and digesting. Cost: Free! They ask for donations or items from their wish list.

Walsenburg "The City Built On Coal" The best place to start to find out about Walsenburg and its history is the Walsenburg Mining Museum. You will find this museum in the 1869 jail house, just behind the County Courthouse. If you’re lucky, you may even find Carolyn Newman there. Carolyn is an avid fan and excellent writer about the history of this area. You can ask her anything. A block south on Main Street, you can’t miss Aprils Attic. Here you can find anything from the hilarious to the gorgeous, along with some authentic ‘Old West' and Civil War treasures. For more shopping fun, continue down Main Street and you will find four more Antique Shops, one after another, and around the corner is a co-operative Antique Mall that covers half of a city block. “Kitty Korner” from Aprils Attic, drop by the Museum of Friends and be sure to visit with the owners, Brendt and Maria. Their personal collection of artwork has a strong connection to the counter culture movement that was here in the area in the 60’s and 70’s and their stories are fascinating. During my initial visit to Spanish Peaks I stayed at the La Plaza Hotel and Bed and Breakfast and I recommend it. At this Historic Inn and Restaurant, you are within walking distance to all of the places I have mentioned here and you will get the opportunity to meet Karen Wilson who owns and runs the Historic Inn and Restaurant. Check your emails - I’ll continue to share tales of why people fall in love with Spanish Peaks Country. Or better yet, come and visit us!
