Make your Summer Getaway An Escape from the Everyday! The history and legends of the Spanish Peaks are interwoven into a tapestry of our Native American lore, heroic tales of early settlers and unique geology that you won’t find elsewhere. Here are just a few of the many celebrations we have planned this summer to observer our rich, western Heritage, natural wonders and local talent.
July 12 Native American Culture Day at La Veta’s Francisco Fort Museum – FREE DAY! Grammy award-winning Native American artist Robert Mirabal returns to the Plaza along with native dancers, Pueblo artisans, petroglyph specialist and guests from the Wolf Sanctuary.
Featured Events July 2: Taikos Drum Exhibition in Walsenburg’s Downtown Park Every day thru Labor Day (weather permitting) Walsenburg Wild Waters July 4th: Parade and fun in Cuchara starting at 11:00 am and at dusk, the best fireworks show in southern Colorado can be seen from Lathrop State Park July 5-6: La Veta Art in the Park Celebration & 4-H Ranch Rodeo/ Bull Riding Event July 11-12: Cuchara Hermosa Art Show July 26: Francisco Days Museum and events are FREE. Award winning singer Mark Ross will present Mining Heritage music
August 2: Taste of Downtown Walsenburg with music, beer gardens & car show. All day until 8:00 pm September 25-28: 10th Annual Spanish Peaks Celtic Festival and Retreat FREE
August 2 Old Trapper’s Trail/Historic Ranch Tour and Gardner Chuck Wagon Dinner Follow the traders and trappers along the Taos Trail as the Naive Americans, Spanish military, gold seekers and French spies did for the past two hundred years. This tour starts at the Walsenburg Mining Museum (112 West 5th, Walsenburg. CO) at 8:30 am and ends with a Chuck Wagon Dinner at the Gardner Methodist Church, an 80 year old tradition. Cost for the tour and dinner is $18.00 for adults and payable the morning of the tour.
August 2 2014 Annual Studio and Gallery Tour The Annual Studio and Gallery Tour are organized by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council to showcase local artists, artisans and galleries. This event is a way to let nonartists learn how art is made and provide opportunities to purchase original art. Self Guided Tour maps are available at the SPACe Gallery in the Town Park, 132 Ryus Street, La Veta, CO.
