FONT-ASTIC SUCCESS Whether it was divine intervention or not, the first Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival to be held at the Holy Trinity church in Hull, was an overwhelming success, way beyond the dreams of any of the organisers. They say that people vote with their feet and in this case they surely did by the hundreds. The organisers were so taken aback by the take up, extra cask ales were brought in to try to stretch the beers to the third day on the Saturday. Unfortunately that did quite work as all beer, cider and bottle products were sold out by 2pm on the Saturday afternoon. So apologies for all those people that were disappointed by that, the good news is that next year will be have a lot more beers (100+?) and cider for your enjoyment. Talks are already going ahead with the church to hold the festival around the same weekend next year, good news for us and I hope the customers who came this year. Further news on the dates as soon as possible. It was also good news for the local real ale pubs in the area. To encourage our disappointed customers to stay in town and try real ales we gave out copies of our new publication ‘Hull Real Ale Guide’ which details over 80 pubs in Hull which sell at least one real ale. The licensees tell us they had a bumper Saturday afternoon and evening, which from our point of view is in itself a plus and helps push the message on real ale. Further festival views, pictures and reports inside this magazine.

EDITOR’s COMMENTS by Bernie Cawte What a great beer festival we had in April at the Holy Trinity Church, all beer, cider and bottled beer sold out by 2 pm on the Saturday afternoon. 85 casks of real ale, 25 ciders and perries and over 12 different types of continental bottled beers were consumed by a record attendance, the calculated gamble had paid off. LETTER (and EMAIL) TO THE EDITOR From Roger Corbett in Blackheath, London (amazing where Pub Mirror turns up) Hello Bernie I purchased the Hull Brewery Bitter pump clip in the attached photograph in a recent eBay auction. About £33 as I recall so quite a few others keen to obtain it I reckon. Hope your readers might like to see it and perhaps one or a few may remember when it would have been in use. My guess is early to middle 1960’s as it is a style of manufacture (other breweries had different shapes and colour contrast) I have also seen for Cobb's of Margate and Ann Street of Jersey from that period. Perhaps it will tease out some more photographs of Hull Brewery pump clips (and later incarnation as North Country Breweries) of older or later ilk. Cheers

Have you any topics you would like to talk about or pictures you think would interest our readers, then please send them to me at the following email address: hullbeerlovers@hotmail.com Contact updates : Join us now on twitter and give us your local news there and then @hullCAMRA.

Have you got any pictures of old Hull Brewery pump clips or can you tell us more about this one, please send your comments to me and we will print them in the next issue.

BRANCH POTY 2011 PRESENTATIONS by Kim Hessletine We had a gloriously sunny and dare I say hot Sunday in March, but it didn’t get off to the best start for Mike and I. We were late and had to meet up at the Cornerhouse in Beverley.

Wold Top to celebrate his win. This is a lovely hoppy, refreshing brew and perfect for the sunny day. The other beers were: John Smith’s cask, not my favourite beer but on good form and if it was always this good I might just change my mind: Sharps: Doombar, a malty, well balanced beer, mid coloured and on very good form. St Austell Tribute: this is a hoppy beer with a sharp, zesty bite: As with all beers we tried here it was on excellent form. Bob was over the moon at winning the award and he thanked his customers for their loyal support, and provided an excellent late lunch.

The Cornerhouse was runner up in the Town category and was a useful meeting point for the Beverley members joining the trip. It had Black Sheep Bitter: Timothy Taylor’s Landlord: Glenhaven Grand Slam: O'Finnigan’s Stout: Abbeydale’s Deception and Black Mass and finally Greene King Mild.

We also called briefly in at the Duke of Wellington, Lund, not an award winner this year but a convenient stop off. They had Wold Top Wold Gold: Theakston’s Best Bitter: Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. Goodmanham Arms at Goodmanham is the winner of the Village Pub of the Year. This is a dog friendly pub full of charm and character.

Peter, the landlord was very pleased to receive the award but graciously asked if we could return to officially present it to Charlie, his pub manager, as he had put in all the work for which Peter said he was very grateful. It is hoped that we will be able to go back on a Friday evening to do so. The winner of the Town Pub of the Year is the Rose and Crown in Driffield. This is a traditional locals’ pub with an incredibly popular landlord, Bob Palmer. Bob had returned a few days earlier from a holiday to the USA, it did not deter him from proving himself worthy of the accolade we there to present. Some of the group had to finish admiring the motorbikes in the car park before the beers beckoned. These were: Black Dog Brewery: Rhatas, Salopian: Darwins Origin, Northhumberland: Master Bates: Theakston’s Old Peculier: Bateman’s XXXB: Ilkley Mary Jane: – went off just as we arrived and Wold Top Bitter. Cider available were Westons – 1st Quality.

There were four cask ales on including, Top of the Drops, a 6% IPA especially brewed by CAMRA Hull and East Yorkshire Branch Forum .….

There was no surprise when this pub was nominated it is a firm favourite with both locals and those of us who have to travel to sample its delights. Although some of the beers were a bit on the cold side they were all on very good form.

BRANCH POTY 2011 PRESENTATIONS

HULL POTY 2011 PRESENTATIONS

by Kim Hessletine

by Angela Cawte

Continued from page 7

The presentation photographs of Hull Pub of the Year and runner-up should look remarkably To say that Vito was pleased to win this award is similar as both were won by Old Town publicans an understatement as he took it round to show all Alan Murphy and Chrissie Fleming. I have known his locals, and anyone else who showed the them personally for most of the time they have slightest interest. been in Hull and I am consequently well aware of Alan’s ambition to bring real ale to us, which is For us we had the pleasure of a couple of hours something he is proving more and more. in this delightful village pub, where all customers are treated like friends and enjoy the warmest of welcomes in traditional surroundings. The runner-up in the village category is the Hope and Anchor at Blacktoft, unfortunately although a smaller presentation group was present when Liz and Eddie Payne were given their award it must not detract from the consistency their pub delivers. Indeed the situation gives a few lucky ones a further opportunity to go again. See the Survey report on page 20 of this issue for that report.

All of the pubs who have gained Pub of the Year Awards for 2011, including the runner up in the village category, have worked hard and deserve every success for the coming year and beyond. It is at times like these that I can see how hard the licensees work, and use the term very loosely, that CAMRA does both encourage the landlords and promotes their good work to the greater population.

The pub which won this year was the Lion and Key, which has been totally transformed in the last two years, currently providing its customers with a choice of seven real ales and four ciders.

It was Walters the winner in the previous two competitions that took the title of runner up. It provided the drinker with 11 real ales at the time of the presentation, but this has since been virtually doubled. It has been the practise to list real ales available however due to the number on offer and to extent to which they change it is not practical to do so. The eagle eyed will no doubt recognise some of the pump badges and thus recognise some beers on offer that night. On the evening of the Presentation Crawl the presentation party also visited Black Boy, Hop and Vine and finally Wellington Inn. All three of these pubs proved yet again that they were also worthy contenders in this competition.

JUG & BOTTLE RETAIN AWARD

FOR YOUR DIARY

Bubwith based specialist delicatessen and offlicence, The Jug & Bottle became the first shop ever to retain a prestigious Drinks Retailing Award, when it was named Independent Cider Retailer of the Year for the second year in a row at a glittering ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel in London recently. This is the third time in the last four years that The Jug & Bottle has won a category at The National Drinks Retailing Awards and they were also runner’s up on two other occasions.

In September Hull & East Yorkshire Branch of CAMRA in conjunction with the Beverley Race Course, will be putting on a mini beer festival in the grounds, on a normal race day. This is a new departure for this branch but it’s not the first CAMRA branch to try this out. Ascot Branch first held a festival at a meeting some 6 years ago, now they have a 200 plus cask beer festival over two days.

Doug & Louise Smith, from this family-run business, are justifiably proud of the achievement. “We continually strive to provide the best possible range of products for our customers. We also try to offer a high quality buying experience, so to receive this recognition again is a fantastic honour,” commented Louise. The Jug & Bottle has had a long-held reputation for the quality of its’ cider stock and has continued to build on this over the last twelve months. There are now sixteen different ciders on draught and more than 90 different bottled varieties were on offer during 2011. Louise regularly changes the availability in order to give customers plenty of choice.

We are going to start on the much more conservative scale of around 15 real ales. The festival will be held on Saturday September 1st and will run from midday - 8pm, we are also hoping to have some live music as well.

The result has been a 61% increase in year-onyear sales, which is three times previous annual figures and Louise feels this is a direct result of winning the award in 2011. “The award has definitely helped to raise the profile of the shop and our cider range. We now get regular customers travelling over 50 miles to purchase their cider!” In presenting the award, trade journalist & one of the judges, Nigel Huddleston said “Few shops do so much to champion cider in the country than The Jug & Bottle which has now become a destination store for the cider enthusiast.” Added to the cider-related products on offer, The Jug & Bottle also stocks a wide range of beers; both draught & bottled varieties and wines - most of which can’t be found on the supermarket shelves. A fantastic delicatessen in stunning retail environment of the Old Victorian School on Bubwith’s Main Street, “makes The Jug & Bottle”, as one judge commented, “a cider nerds heaven! CAMRA Hull and East Yorkshire Branch Forum .….

Further details available soon on our festival blog page, but CAMRA members will be entitled to reduced prices for the meeting. As usual we will be looking for volunteers to help staff the bars, so if you are interested please email hullbeerlovers@hotmail.com to register yourself with our festival sub committee, or speak to any committee member, details are on page 3.

HULL PUB NEWS by Pete Mason and Jill Walker Welcome to my last edition of Hull Pub News. Jill Walker is taking over as Hull Pubs Officer, leaving me with an easier task of covering the eastern half of the East Riding. Yvette Hardy and Paul Miller have taken over the Rising Sun on Beverley High Road, about six hundred yards from their old pub, the Wheelhouse. They originally intended running both of them together with their other pub, the Duke of York, in Sutton, but were unable to agree suitable terms with Marston’s. The pub opened on Friday 4th May selling four real ales from the Marston’s stable and two real ciders. They will be keeping two ciders and a mild on permanently and there are plans to increase the hand-pumps in due course. The Wassand Arms, Wassand Street, has reopened as a Community Pub for the benefit of the Echoes Foundation and other local charities. The pub will be open on selected Friday and Saturday nights, and possibly Sundays. The charity was founded by Claire Stockton and she will be supported by bar manager Anna Fox. The ales for the opening were donated by Great Newsome and Wold Top Breweries.

is now only selling one cask ale, due to disappointingly low sales. However the landlady Rose, would like to generate more interest and has expressed an interest in holding a mini beer festival later in the year. The Sailmakers Arms, on St Andrews Quay, opened at the beginning of May after a £120,000 refurbishment. The Tap, on Spring Bank, is back in action. Selling up to 4 cask ales and new management team Ashley and Jess say cask sales are going very well. They plan to hold a mini beer festival over the Jubilee weekend and also operates a loyalty card for regular customers. Jill Hamilton, who briefly took over the Ravenser, Southcoates Lane in February, is now in charge at the Ship Inn, in Sutton, and is hoping to increase sales and choice of cask ales. The Inglemire Pub, (formerly the Inglemire Club) is reportedly now selling cask ales.

Congratulation to the Punch Hotel who have won a major pub award thanks to two landladies who have turned its fortunes around. The Timber Dock Tavern has now reopened as Business partners Leila Bolton and Claire the Goldcrest after a massive refurbishment, Bennett took over the pub in Queen Victoria and is selling three Marston’s ales on hand pump. Square two years ago.

On Newland Avenue, the Newland Tofts has opened on the corner of De Grey Street. The pub is named after the original name of Newland Avenue, and is selling up to four cask ales. Around the corner on Queens Road, the St John’s had closed after it is believed that the landlord had called it a day, and transferred to the Ravenser on Southcoates Lane. However at the time of writing, the St John’s is open and under a temporary manager The Sandringham, on Paragon Street, is now selling Tetley Bitter, on hand pump. Hopefully, the Grange Hotel, on Grange Road run by the same licensee, should also be selling Tetley Bitter. On Hessle Road, the newly refurbished Rayners Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA on facebook

......

Now they have been rewarded with the title of City Centre Pub for the Northern Region in the Marston's Pub of the Year. Leila said: "I've always been in the pub trade but was keen to set up my own business, however it just wasn't financially possible by myself. So I asked my friend Claire, who trained in catering, if she'd like to join me – and I guess the rest is history. We've absolutely no regrets starting up on our own. We love the job and are really passionate about what we do. We're very hands-on landladies. The Marston's award is the icing on the cake for us as we're a small team and it's great to get recognition for what we do." The Punch Hotel will now be put forward against other Marston pubs for the national prize. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Hotel Du Vin in Birmingham at the end of May.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS An update from your local membership Secretary: How can I get involved in CAMRA, I often hear people say. For one thing, keep pubs open by drinking real ale. Real cask ale cannot be bought in a supermarket or off-licence, so it is really important to save pubs to keep the cask ale flowing. Join in campaigns and sign petitions to save pubs, protest against excessive taxation and promoting the sale of full pints.

GOODMANHAM ARMS

However, on a local level, CAMRA members can also get involved. We have monthly survey trips through the summer months where we take a coach out to East Yorkshire pubs you might not otherwise get to. Contact Pete Mason and Mark Bainton for enquiries (see contacts on page 3).

Goodmanham, nr. Market.Weighton 01430 873849

Also we have some survey crawls covering the less central areas of Hull, again trying to catch some quality pubs that might not be in your usual drinking area. Contact Jill Walker for more details. We have monthly Open Meetings in central Hull pubs where you can be involved in the branch decision making and at the meeting in December, you can have your say about Pubs in the branch area for the next Good Beer Guide when we vote on the entries. Finally, how do I know about all these things? Well I send out a monthly newsletter by e mail (by post if you send me some stamps), we have a website (currently being refurbished), a forum for discussion, a members’ Yahoo Group for more immediate information about pubs and the branch and a Facebook group that is open to members and non-members alike. The Facebook group is a great way to let the world know what is going on in pubs near you. BRAND NEW!!! We are also on Twitter! So tweet away and let the world know what is happening in Hull and East Yorkshire. Access to these sites can be found elsewhere in this magazine, but if you have any problems in access, just drop me an e-mail at realaledrinker@hotmail.co.uk . If you do not have access to a computer, you can contact me on 07971 353226. Have a great summer. Tony Garrett, Membership Secretary

WHY JOIN CAMRA by Tony Garrett, Membership Secretary Many people say, I drink the ale and that’s the way to support CAMRA. This is really important and I encourage everyone to give this very practical support. EAST YORKSHIRE SURVEY TRIP

GREEN DRAGON

Our trips to survey for 2014 Good Beer Guide have started. We began with the Hope and Anchor at Blacktoft, which was the runner up in the most recent Pub of the Year competition (2011). Four real ales to include one guest are standard here, licensees Eddie and Liz usually have a mild, for some time this has been Jennings Dark Mild, which was appreciated by many.

51 Saturday Market Beverley (01482) 889801

CAMRA’S EAST YORKSHIRE TOWN PUB OF THE YEAR 2009 RUNNER UP 2010

After all too brief a visit we went on to Gilberdyke, with two options in Wards Hotel and the Cross Keys. We were not aware that the previous licensees have moved on from Wards Hotel, however we were able to try Greene King’s London’s Glory and at the Cross Keys there were three real ales of varying quality.

Weekly changing guest ales from Yorkshire and Regional breweries as well as real ales from around the UK. General Knowledge Quizzes on Tuesday & Wednesday @ 9pm Food served daily until 10pm

The third stop was White Hart, in North Cave where we received the usual friendly welcome from Tracey and Glen. There was better news here, they have moved the real ale so all hand pumps are now in the front bar, and increased to the choice to four, which including the self-style White Hart 1776, was an excellent example of the variety a free house can offer.

Good Beer Guide 2012 The Windmill Inn 53 Lairgate Beverley East Yorkshire HU17 8ET Tel: 01482 86 28 17

At the Triton Inn a further hand pump has also been added, providing another Wold Top - Wold Gold. I appreciated the opportunity to thank owner Paul for his continuing support of CAMRA, he gives discount and is currently promoting the e-petition against ascending beer duty. Then to Welton in the Green Dragon we were able again enjoy 10% discount on our choice from the four real ales from the Marston’s portfolio. Lastly, we ended the evening at Welton Memorial Hall, Black Sheep Bitter was the order of the day. Whilst this is a members’ club it is the epitome of the community local. Many of the pubs visited vary their choices, most of what was available is not likely to be available when you read this,so in the spirit of what a survey trip is about - to find out what is available - try to find the time to try these places yourself. We are losing too many rural pubs, and consider the e-petition at CAMRA.ORG.UK/saveyourpint please as it impacts on us all. Thanks to Mark his first trip was a resounding success! HULL REAL ALE AND CIDER FESTIVAL 2012 REPORT As reported on the front page of this edition of Pub Mirror our annual beer and cider festival was an overwhelming success and yes we ran out of beer. We knew we were on a sticky wicket when by close of play on Thursday we had already run out of 9 beers and we had to order more in. In fact in total we had 85 beers on offer over the 3 (sorry 2 and a bit days), which was the same as at the Mortimer Suite last year, which we had some 8 beers left over. Ciders and bottle also ran out, again better then last year when we had 3 ciders and numerous bottles left. The Festival Committee would like to thank all the customers without whom this would not had been so successful, but also to the volunteers from CAMRA, the church, the musicians and the catering staff, your efforts were much appreciated.

CAMRA and for Holy Trinity. Many people told me that they had lived in the area all their lives and yet never come into Holy Trinity - and now they realise what a splendid building we have at the heart of Hull. My colleagues and I had some fascinating conversations with people at the Festival. Matt Woodcock, our Pioneer Minster, had the privilege of praying with someone - whilst he had a beer in his hand! I genuinely hope that CAMRA and Holy Trinity can work together to stage a festival in 2013 - and with even more beers!" As Reverend Barnes said the coverage from the media was staggering, we had all the local media at the event, plus national coverage on ‘5 live’ and via the Press Association, here are some of things that they said: Hull Daily Mail: ‘Drinkers gathered around the pews today as the Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival opened at Holy Trinity Church. It is the first time the event, which is organised by the Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA branch, has taken place at the 700-year old church, which is also the festival charity.

Hand Pump Area Neal Barnes the vicar of Holy Trinity commented on the festival "As far as I'm concerned I thought that it was a truly excellent event, and well run by CAMRA. The atmosphere was great - and all very good natured. It was wonderful to see so many people come in to the church and then enjoy a good drink or two, friendly conversation and all within stunning surroundings. The media coverage was exceptional, both for the event, for

Yorkshire Post: ‘A Hull vicar has welcomed real ale lovers into his church for a beer festival, saying he thought it was the kind of event Jesus would have enjoyed. Pioneer minister the Rev Matt Woodcock said: "I think Jesus was all about people engaging in their everyday lives and wasn't someone who would have expected people to come into some big holy moment. The festival, which began in 1978, is expected to see 5,500 pints consumed over the next three days.’ BBC North: Thousands of real ale lovers are being welcomed into an East Yorkshire church for a beer festival. HULL REAL ALE AND CIDER FESTIVAL REPORT 2012 the city centre, for the first time. The Reverend Dr Neal Barnes, vicar of Holy Trinity, said he was "partial to a glass of real ale" and he wanted to support local businesses who were involved in the festival, which is in its 34th year. "I'm sure those attending will respect our wonderful building and drink responsibly," he said

stunning. I go to a festival in Gainsborough that takes place in a venue dating from Henry VIII but this goes back even further than that. I have already sent back photographs to members who could not make it today. Beer and stained glass what more could you want?" Mark Bateman, of West Hull, just managed to make the festival in time before the beer ran out. He said: "I have just signed up with CAMRA. I saw on Twitter there was a limited supply of beer left so we got down at noon. The atmosphere was very good and I think the venue was the real winner. There was a nice mix of real ale and culture and that's what it's all about. There was a varied mix of ales even though much of it had run out but it was certainly worthwhile going."

Branch Chairperson Angela Cawte and the Reverend Neil Barnes toasting the festival

Among the many customer the comments were of the same elk and here are a few of them courtesy of Hull Daily Mail and Yorkshire Post; Kevin Dalton, 60, a civil servant from Beverley, who was sampling a pint of Sledgehammer Stout – the strongest available at 7.4 per cent – said: “It’s very interesting, it’s a nice place to visit.” Table Area The Hull & East Yorkshire branch of CAMRA have a separate festival committee and we are sure that they will be recommending a return to this most historic and impressive venue for next years festival. Already dates have been offered for the same time of year, so we will keep you informed of the progress through this publication and our very successful festival blog page. REAL ALE v SMOOTH What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life. The dead beer is then resurrected by means of chemicals and served chilled by gas pressure through fonts. Smooth beer sales are also known as nitro-keg beer.

DRIFFIELD NEWS by Paul Alterskye Claire & I had a trip out to Driffield on the train on Saturday May 5th. Here are our findings: The Sidings is now called Buffers(restaurant); we didn't have a drink there but they had Black Sheep Best on. Tiger had John Smith’s cask plus 3 guests, the Robinson's Crusoe was good. We popped into the Star for a half which was in good condition. The Bell had 2 Wold Top beers on, which were in better condition than recent visits. While in this vicinity I checked Georgie's Bar, they had Caledonian Flying Scotsman, Full Measure; Jennings Cumberland and Original Keys; Ringwood Fortyniner. The Rose & Crown was superb.

We wanted to eat here although we weren't overly hungry. Well too bad because the portions were VERY generous. My all day breakfast could have fed 2 people. Popped over to the Benjamin Fawcett and had a nice dark beer from Conwy brewery. We finished in a very quiet Mariners but I have to say the Ringwood Boondoggle was my beer of the day; very well kept. We also put our heads in the door of the Buck; John Smith’s only, Full Measure; Cumberland and Spread Eagle; John Smith’s We had a look in the door of the Blue Bell, Riverhead after walking over the footbridge, which although having John Smith’s and Tetleys, neither were available( on a Saturday of a Bank Holiday ?)

Unfortunately the Falcon had no Real Ale. All in We called back at the Red Lion. They only had Greene King IPA on which was in good condition. all a great day out and can be visited by bus and rail.

THE INN CIDER by David Litten CAMRA’s National Cider and Perry Championships 2012 were held in early May at Reading and featured ciders and perries from different regions of the UK. They were assessed on factors such as aroma, flavour/taste, overall balance and finish by a judging panel consisting of publicans, drinks writers and CAMRA members.

The winner of the Perry Gold medal is Gwatkin Blakeney Red, which the judges described as having ‘a sweet aroma, with a wonderful elderflower and spirit taste, and a satisfying bite in the finish.’

Cornwall and Herefordshire producers take National titles CiderGOLD- Cornish Orchards, Farmhouse (Duloe, Cornwall) SILVER- Perry Brothers, Sweet Vintage (Dowlish Wake, Somerset) BRONZE- Burrow Hill, Medium (Martock, Somerset) PerryGOLD- Gwatkin, Blakeney Red (Abbey Dore, Herefordshire) SILVER- Butford Organics, Medium (Bodenham, Herefordshire) BRONZE- Minchew, Stinking Bishop (Aston-onCarrant, Gloucestershire) The winner of the Cider Gold medal is Cornish Orchards Farmhouse, which the judges described as ‘a very light and easy drinking cider, well balanced, and packed with flavour ’. The Cider champion producer, Cornish Orchards, started large scale production in 1999, and is a well established producer, which has been growing cider apples for the past 20 years.

On hearing the results of the Perry competition, Denis Gwatkin of Gwatkin Cider and Perry, said: “This is wonderful news. It’s 20 years since we won our first CAMRA award at Stockport Beer and Cider Festival, so it’s good to know we are still doing things right” Andrea Briers, CAMRA National Cider and Perry committee chairperson praised the quality of this year’s entrants. She said: “The competition once again brought together real cider and perry producers from across the country, and showcased some excellent variety and choice. The quality of the products coming through is testament to the hard work of Britain’s producers.” Cider & Perry Month Events During the month of October 2012, CAMRA branches and pubs will be hosting numerous events across the country to celebrate Cider Month. Look our for events in our area. No real cider in your pub then why not get your landlord/landlady to contact CAMRA and we will give them advice on what our campaign is about. Our Cider representatives will be happy to help.

Once in a lifetime London Brewery Crawl and a chance to brew in a Hall! Three London breweries are opening their doors to auction bidders at this year’s Great British Beer Festival at Olympia in celebration of London City of Beer. Every session, you can bid for a place on a brewery trip to Sambrook's, Brew Wharf and Kernel. The trip should be one to remember. Taking place on Saturday 8th September, there will be a chance to look around these three breweries and a chance to meet the brewers and sample some of their delicious wares. The trip starts at 11am at Sambrook's (nearest station is Clapham Junction) and a light lunch is provided. Established in 2008, Sambrook's was at the vanguard of the new breweries that have set up in London over the last few years and the brewery has gone from strength to strength, with their beers being found across London. This is a chance to see the recently expanded new brewery.

into being in 2008, is based in Borough. It is another brewer that loves big flavours; strong IPAs and porters are the order of the day and promises to end the day on a high. And this year's Brewer for a Day is equally enticing. The award winning, Thornbridge Brewery in Derbyshire is hosting the Brewer for the Day in their old brewery in Thornbridge Hall, which they set up in 2005 (they now have two breweries). Thornbridge Hall is a private stately home with a history back to the 12th Century and is set in 100 acres of parkland. The house was owned by the Longsdon family for circa 700 years and since the late 1700’s, the house has been have enlarged and altered. There is a William Morris/Burne-Jones window and even a private railway station. Particularly known for its strong Jaipur IPA, Thornbridge is offering the lucky winner overnight accommodation for two in Sheffield, transport to the brewery and a day's brewing including lunch. The auction will take place on the Thursday evening at this year's Great British Beer Festival. If you can’t make the Festival but would like to bid for either the brewery trip or the Brewer for a Day, send your postal bid to baustin@supanet.com or phone: 01923 211654 (answerphone) or you could enter the London Drinker crossword competition in the May/June London Drinker magazine.

Then a short trip to London Bridge and into Brew Wharf (next door to Vinepolis) to see the small brewery at the back of the pub, where one of London's innovative brewers is. Brew Wharf was at the beginning of Britain's love of big flavoured American and now have moved on to other imported hops and each beer has a different recipe so visitors will be in for a treat.

THE SWAN, BEVERLEY ROAD report from Hull Daily Mail A PUBLIC inquiry may decide the fate of Hull's remaining monument to the Blitz as the deadline for negotiations looms. The National Civilian WW2 Memorial Trust wants to turn the bombed National Picture Theatre in Beverley Road into a Blitz memorial. The trust is in talks with owner Reid Park Properties to buy the site and has revealed it now has £150,000 available to from private backers. But there is a disagreement over the price with a discrepancy of about £100,000. If a deal cannot be reached by August 1, a public inquiry will be held to decide whether or not the owner can make changes to the listed building. Alan Canvess, of the trust, said: "The plans to turn the building into apartments and a restaurant will require changes to the listed building. "We contacted the Secretary of State's office asking for a public inquiry, which was accepted. "It was agreed between ourselves, the owner and Hull City Council that preparations for any inquiry would be put on hold until August 1 to give us all a chance to thrash out a deal to buy the site. If that doesn't prove successful, the

public inquiry will take place around two months later." The trust has been given planning permission to turn the dilapidated National Picture Theatre in Beverley Road, Hull, into a memorial site with an education centre. Reid Park Properties has also been given permission to turn the building into apartments and a restaurant. If no deal can be reached, Mr Canvess believes everything hinges on the outcome of the public inquiry. He said: "If the owner is successful at the public inquiry then he has full permission to go ahead with what he wants to do. "But if he loses, he can't do anything with the site, which puts us in a much stronger position. "The owner still insists the site is worth £250,000 but we spent £1,000 on a district valuer who put it at between £130,000 to £150,000. "We have now raised £150,000 and are still looking to get more. "We will keep plugging away and hope the owner is responsive." Reid Properties declined to comment but confirmed it was in negotiations with the trust

PUB MIRROR ON TOUR by David Litten At Easter, Pub Mirror went on holiday, jaunting around Belgium once again in the company of Wakefield CAMRA! After an overnight journey to Dover and an early Good Friday morning crossing to Calais it was not very long before we reached the Gulden Spoor Brouwerij in Gullegem, West Flanders at around 9.00am. The brewer was at work preparing his next creation whilst being interrogated by eager beer nuts who consumed copious amounts of his bottled delights. What a way to start!

and also export hops to

Thereafter followed a fish lunch stop at the always excellent Poussecafe in Poperinge, washed down with a local beer of course. A short ride took us to the In De Vrede at Westvleteren. This is the very commercial brewery tap for the world famous beers brewed by Trappist monks across the road. This sparkling, all new cafe replaced the old simple building some time ago. The service and quality of what is thought by many to be the best beer in the world was first class. After a snooze on the coach we reached our base for the weekend, the Center Hotel in Kortrijk. Tod ay Kortrijk is the most important city in southern West-Flanders with several hospitals, colleges and a university. It was the very first city in Belgium with a pedestrian shopping street and today this has expanded across much of the historical city centre. The hotel was located close to the main square where the week long funfair was in full swing. Too loud man! Following a wash and brush up several of the local cafes were visited, the highlights being the Gainsbar (for interesting beers) and the Boulevard (for intimate atmosphere and quality beers).

Before returning to base we stopped in Ypres to witness the last post and the opportunity to bump into a fellow CAMRA chap from Hull. Amazing! Monday morning saw us back in Hainaut visiting Brasserie Ellezelloise complete with tasting boards and the popular spaghetti bolognaise. Oh, that Hercule Stout – only 9.0% ABV!

Day two was one of contrasts. The morning saw a visit to Brasserie St. Feullien in Hainaut which has recently been modernising. However, we had an interesting tour around the old brewery which is set to become a museum. The new kit was then viewed and approved and followed by a generous tasting session and the purchase of carry-outs. We retired to Mons for lunch and more beer at the elegant Excelsior in the Grand Place before taking to the road for the 15 mile journey to the Authentique Brasserie at Blaton. Frederick was not aware that we were coming, but nevertheless, it was an interesting small brewery using old dairy equipment. Some good stuff too. The first visit on Easter Sunday was to the very new De Plukker brewery near Poperinge. They use their own organic hops in their excellent beer Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA on facebook

...…

It was back to West Flanders in the afternoon for the trip’s final brewery and its tasting cafe – T’Gaverhopke. Here, several beers were eagerly consumed with the fruit ones being particularly popular. The evening was spent revisiting the best cafes in Kortrijk before an early start on Tuesday for the trek home. Another great holiday for Pub Mirror and its companions, with next year’s destination of choice being Mechelen.
