FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Well it’s been a very interesting and intense few weeks in the branch. We have had our Branch Chairperson Stewart Campbell step down due to personal reasons, which has meant a temporary change in the committee. We are lucky in having Angela Cawte an ex-chair of the branch as vicechair, so she has taken the role back. I have temporarily taken on the secretary’s role from Angela until the AGM in March, when hopefully someone else will take over the secretary’s role. I would like to place on record the branch’s thanks to Stewart for all the work he has put in over the years for the branch. He is now living in Whitby and is an active member there and in the Scarborough area, as well as at regional level. We wish him well.

Another result of Stewart stepping down was that I took on the role of festival organisor at short notice and I would like wholeheartedly thank the many people who helped me through this difficult period. With no experience as a festival organisor it was a steep learning curve, you wouldn’t believe all the things you need to be aware of, from licensing to loos, from insurance to security, but as I said I had a good team around me to help. A report on the festival is in the middle pages of this edition of Pub Mirror. Talking of festivals I am pleased to say that next year’s festival is booked in for the 12th to 14th April 2018 at Hull Minster. This will be our 7th festival at the church and the 40th beer festival for our

STEWART CAMPBELL STEPS DOWN It was with some sadness that, in October 2017, the branch bid a fond farewell to our long-serving chairman, Stewart Campbell. It was for personal reasons, mainly following the death of his long-time partner Janet Rowan, that he decided to up sticks and move to the wilds of Whitby. The move however did not signal the end of his relationship with CAMRA as he is now working with the Scarborough Branch as well as taking on a roll within the regional organisation and having plans to start a separate Whitby Branch. It seems you can’t keep a good CAMRA man down. Stewart is a Londoner by birth (and also a Reading FC fan) but for reasons now lost in the mists of time he decided to move to God’s Own County and come to live in the glorious city of ours (a wise move if ever there was one). Having seemingly always been a CAMRA member, some say he was weaned on real ale; he was soon involved in the workings of the local branch. At first like the rest of us as simply an active member attending open meetings, Good Beer Guide (GBG) survey trips and social outings. This, however was to change. In April 2004 he took on the editorship of the branch flagship publication, Pub Mirror, a job which he did either on his own or in conjunction with the previous editor Alan Canvess for almost 5 years. During his tenure in this post the magazine saw several changes in terms of content and layout a process which continues to evolve to this day under the current editor Bernie Cawte. Stewart also took on the role of Branch Treasurer and suprisingly, although not a Yorkshireman, kept the sort of tight control of the branch finances, that any Yorkshireman would have been proud of. In March 2014 Stewart finally gave up the treasurer’s role in favour of a more exalted post when he was elected as the branch chairman. During his period as chairman Stewart oversaw a number of significant events including the introduction of the Locale Scheme, the fight to save pubs by having them designated as Assets of Community Value, two highly successful beer and cider festivals at the Holy Trinity Church and the celebrations for the branch’s 40th anniversary in October 2015. He also took on the responsibility for preparing the entries for the GBG. It must be also be realised that on top of all his work for CAMRA he was at the same time in conjunction with Janet running a successful pub, The Hop and Vine, in Albion Street. Not only was the pub a regular entry in the GBG but it also gained renown as a haven for cider drinkers winning various local and regional awards and ultimately a national award. On behalf of the committee and all members of the Hull and East Yorkshire Branch thank you Stewart for all your hard work on behalf of the branch over the years and we wish you every success in your new ventures both within and outside CAMRA.

HULL PUBS REPORT BY JON MAJOR As we fast approach the end of this roller coaster City of Culture year it’s time to reflect on the amount of changes we have seen on the pub and real ale front in the city.

A new bar has opened on Trinity House Lane in the heart of the Old Town. The Brain Jar is a retro type bar which offers a selection of bottle condition ales.

We have witnessed new pubs opening, pubs closing, pubs having huge refurbishments, pubs adding even more real ales, more local breweries opening, many pubs hosting their own real ale & cider festivals plus tap takeovers from breweries both local and further afield all of which have been extremely successful and best of all several pubs in our region winning CAMRA awards on both a local and county level.

Several pubs in our area have changed hands recently one in particular is Pearsons on Princes Avenue. This has been taken over by Mark Farmer and Leslie Skinner who have had several pubs in the area; they have introduced a new menu and plan many changes including introducing a ‘caught on camera’ over the weekend, if you’re randomly picked from photos over the weekend you win a cash prize. One thing they don’t plan on changing is the choice of three real ales which includes ‘ Andrew Larkin toad in the ale’.

This last quarter alone has seen Vintage bar on Silver Street which opened in September add two more hand pulls to their bar upping the total to five, two of which are usually from the Marston’s range plus three rotating guests which always includes a local brewery. The New Clarence has re-opened and the new management team have had to settle in fast due to the nearby New Theatre opening its doors after a year long refurbishment. The pub has now added a new menu and reinstalled real ales.

Good luck to all those that have taken pubs on recently and if you know of any changes please let me know. I can’t close without mentioning our award winning pubs this year that include Cross Keys on Beverley Road and Duke of York in Sutton both gaining Commitment to Cask accreditation and of course the Yorkshire Pub of the Year runner up Whalebone. You have all done yourselves and the Hull area proud.

Pubs that have had refurbishments recently are St. John’s on Queens Road, Albert Hotel on Anlaby Road, Saltshouse Tavern on Dunvegan Road has not only had a major refurbishment but has also added three real ales.

EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS REPORT BY MARK BAINTON Cottingham Shirley Bamforth, owner of Hed’On Inn has received planning permission for a micro pub at 144 Hallgate, Cottingham (next to King WilliamIV). It will be called the Hugh FitzBaldrick after a 12th century local. Shirley hopes to open shortly. Market Weighton Londesborough Arms in Market Weighton held their 2nd festival on 23rd September. 10 ales were available., started at noon and finishing when all the beer had gone. Food (savories) were supplied by the local butcher. Coverforce a band from York supplied the entertainment.

Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle. The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. MEMBERSHIP REPORT BY TONY GARRETT Why Join CAMRA and why get involved? From the Branch Membership Secretary These days terms and styles are becoming very confusing. At one time you may have had two choices on the bar – both cask ales: Bitter or mild. Then styles developed and sometimes fused with styles from abroad. Then keg came back to retain shelf life, but taking the “real” out of ale. Finally the ideas of keykeg and keycask came along with various discussions about whether they are truly keeping the tradition of real ale alive and whether they add a benefit to the beer drinker’s choice. For anyone entering a pub today with cask ales and, as yet undefined, craft ales it can be a confusing world. CAMRA stands as an independent organisation representing the beer and cider drinking consumer to try and help people to understand which ales are real living beers, producing their condition naturally rather than through added gasses. Being part of the campaign both funds this work and also gives access to information about real ales and where the different beers fit in. It also gives you an opportunity to become involved in local CAMRA activities. FOLLOW THE TIGERS ON THE AMBER TRAIL We are pleased to continue our long association with the Tigers’ Official Supporters Club (we are now in our 6th year) and suggest some real ale pubs near the grounds. Most of these pubs will be in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, so I hope you enjoy the real ales/ cider on offer. if you come across ay other pubs, especially away friendly pubs, please let us know at pubmirror@hull.camra.org.uk Bolton Wanderers – Monday 1st January (KO 15.00) - The main pub for away fans is the Beehive (right) 991 Chorley New Road (BL6 4BA) which is about a 10-15 minute walk away from the away turnstiles. It is a good sized pub with 2 real ales and also serves food. You can also park your car there. Also there is the Barnstormers pub on Lostock Lane (BL6 4BL), from the M61, go past the stadium on your left, move into the right hand filter lane and turn right at the traffic lights into Lostock Lane, the pub is down on the right and admit away fans, this pub serves 4 real ales FA CUP 3rd round - Saturday 6th January (KO 15.00) - At the time of publication we don’t know the result of the replay between Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandra, so here is one from each town Blackburn - Near to the railway station is the Postal Order (15-19 Darwen Street, BB2 2BH) a former Post Office, now one of the army of Wetherspoon’s pubs around the country, serving beers from the local breweries such as Twaites, Moorhouse’s, Three B’s and Hopstar. Crewe - If you arrive early and have a bit of time on your hands then I would recommend a visit to 18 the Borough Arms on (Earl Street, CW1 2BG). The pub which, is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, is around a mile away (15-20 minute walk) from Gresty Road and has a large number of real ales, plus Belgian and German beers on tap. Sunderland - Saturday 20th January (KO 15.00) - If you have a bit of time to spare, then you may like to try the Harbour View, (Roker, SR6 0NU) on the sea front, which is around a 15-20 minute walk away from the ground. Simply go along Roker Avenue (opposite the main entrance to the stadium) until you reach the seafront, turn left along the front and you will see the pub up on the left. The pub which is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2018, serves up to six real ales and reasonably priced food (with its own match day menu). Preston North End - Saturday 3rd February (KO 15.00) – There are 6 GBG pubs in Preston and the first you will see if you are coming by train is the Old Vic, 79 Fishergate,(PR1 2UH) which is opposite the train station. It boasts seven handpumps so you should find a good choice of real ales, CAMRA Wetherspoon vouchers are accepted. This pub also serves food. Further towards the stadium is the Princess Alice (right) 29/31 Cambridge Walk (PR1 7SL) The pub is only a 10 minute walk from the ground, beers are normally from small local Lancashire breweries. Nottingham Forest - Saturday 10th February (KO 15.00) - There are 17 pubs in the CAMRA 2018 Good Beer Guide for Nottingham and the Vat and Fiddle, Queens Bridge Road (NG2 1NB) near to the railway station is a good a place to start. It is the brewery tap pub of Castle Rock brewery and so has a big range of real beers. Leave the station by the front exit, turn left a little way and Queens Bridge Road is a big thoroughfare on your right (almost opposite the station) Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

FOLLOW THE TIGERS ON THE AMBER TRAIL Another pub to consider is the Canalhouse, Canal Street,(NG1 7EH,) which is a converted Waterways Warehouse. Both pubs are in the 2018 GBG. Middlesbrough - Tuesday 20th February (KO 19.45) - The Star, 14 Southfield Road (TS1 3BX) is a large and popular pub situated opposite the university campus. Usually has 4 real ales and Westons Old Rosie cider on draft. Also near to the university campus is a newish Wetherspoon’s, Swatters Carr, 228 Linthorpe Road (TS1 3QW) an old 17th Century farmhouse offering the usual Wetherspoon’s fayre. Ipswich Town - Saturday 3rd March (KO 15.00) - Eight pubs are entered into the GBG for 2018 in Ipswich and our choice to start is The Arboretum, 43 High Street (IP1 3QL), which has a single bar and a restaurant upstairs which specialises in locally sourced freshly prepared food. Beer from local small brewers including Humpty Dumpty and St Peter’s are complemented by a good selection of local bottled beers. Also well worth a visit is the Dove Street Inn (right) on St Helens Street (IP4 2LA) which is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide which has up to 20 real ales and ciders on tap. Birmingham City - Saturday 17th March (KO 15.00) - It is not particularly recommended that you visit pubs near to the ground, so we have given you two pubs within 10 minutes of New Street station. The first is Old Joint Stock, 4 Temple Bar, opposite the cathedral (B2 5NY) which in its previous life was the Old Joint Stock Bank. It is a grade two listed building and boasts elaborate decorative features, a large island bar and a club room to the rear and a balcony drinking area. 19 Good quality food is served along with guest beers and ciders from local breweries. The second pub is the Wellington, 37 Bennetts Hill (B2 5SN) a local CAMRA Pub of the Year which boasts 17 hand pumps with local ales and two ever changing ciders. No food is served but you can take your own and plates and cutlery will be provided. Wolverhampton Wanderers - Monday 2nd April (KO 15.00) – There are 14 GBG 2018 entries for Wolverhampton but most are not considered away friendly pubs. Molineux is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre so a good choice might be Hogs Head (right)186 Stafford Street (WV1 1NA). This large 19th century traditional city centre pub with attractive brick terracotta exterior and stained glass windows is divided into separate areas inside. Usually with a wide range of 10 real ales and changing ciders is a really popular pub for all ages. There is a small bar called the Bluebrick, Broad Gauge Way (WV10 0BA) inside the Premier Inn hotel, located near to the railway station, which is used frequently by away fans. It does though charge a £2 entrance fee, but does have two real ales. If you have any comments or expereinces from the pubs you visit when watching the Tigers please feel free to let us know. HULL REAL ALE & CIDER FESTIVAL 2017 - VERSION 39 On Sunday 12th November 2017 - the army of Hull CAMRA volunteers set off on thier annual set up program for the 39th Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival. The festival itself was to open on Thursday 16th November at our now regular venue of Hull Minster. The amount of work our volunteers have to do is documented over the next few pages, We would like to thank Derek Taylor ÂŠ Derek Taylor Photography for the excellent photographs in this article. Tribute should be paid to the CAMRA volunteers who worked so hard, especially as the church is still a bit of a building site, and our own staff and volunteers who provided the support and on-the-spot trouble-shooting as we adapted this well-established festival into the new arrangements We are thrilled that a record number of people came to enjoy the quality ale and cider in this unique setting, and had a great time catching up with friends and making new ones. There was a happy and relaxed buzz in the church – which is one of the things that we always like to encourage! We are eagerly anticipating the next festival in mid-April when all our building work will be complete and our guests will have full access to our renewed and revitalised Hull Minster. Please come and join us!

This year was the last event that would involve Rev Matt Woodcock who Is moving on to continue bringing his unique approach to his vocation in York. Matt has become a friend to many of us in the years since the festival has been held at Holy Trinity and things have changed very much when I was first introduced

to him when he initially proposed that CAMRA held their local festival there. So we acknowledged Matt’s contribution with a special brew made for us by Brass Castle Brewery; named Wild and Woody, (Pump Badge, bottom left) unfortunately it wasn’t to Matt’s taste but he was pleased by the gesture. The festival was staffed by some long standing local members (two pictured below, Paul Ashton (left) and Mark Spight) who volunteer

year on year and several new faces this year, we hope they will return in 2018 as their involvement is essential to making the event as special as it is.

On the bars we had Steve from Sutton Coldfield and Nigel from Brigg. We also had assistance from Carlo, an Italian student studying in Hull, although we had no customers from overseas his help was never the less just as helpful. Carlo told us this of his own experience: Volunteering at the festival was an unforgettable experience. It was a real pleasure to work side by side with the lovely local CAMRA staff; thanks to them, I learnt loads of interesting things about the world of English Ales. Moreover, I personally always have at heart the promotion of the cultural heritage of the communities that host me, so I’m glad CAMRA gave me the opportunity for helping sharing this outstanding element of the local culture. Though what I enjoyed utmost was seeing the smile of people leaving the festival, genuinely pleased by the time spent in

from our visitors which were extremely gratifying and it makes a lot of the hard work feel worthwhile. One such person was Tim Edward, Membership Secretary from Ipswich’s branch who stated: ” Fabulous festival. Great choice of beers, great quality. So many different varities. Bar staff understood quality on a couple of times made sure I was OK with the last half of a cask/first half of a cask. Venue is iconic and beautiful. Thank and well done.” Praise indeed for all of those who met with Tim. We also hosted members from Nottingham CAMRA, they were being organised on the day by Steve Scrimshaw, Steve emailed after the event as follows We had an excellent day in Hull. Your festival was incredible; several people said if they’d known it was in such a great venue we would have visited sooner. The staff we spoke with 23 were clearly very proud of the venue and also interested to hear about our “little” festival as well. Obviously the downside to visiting on Saturday afternoon is the limited selection of beer, however, there was still a pretty good choice and we all commented on the condition and quality of the beers. Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality.

Drinkers however were also very impressed to hear the RSM choir who travelled over from Leeds to perform on the evening of the trade day event. People were literally dancing in the aisles as the songs were sung. Our guests included representatives from Axholme Brewing Company, The Great Yorkshire Brewery, Barclays, Rollits Solicitors, Andrew Jackson Solicitors, Department of International Trade and Team Humber Marine Alliance. We would like to thank all of our sponsors without whose support the festival just would not happen and to all of our brewery and pub freinds for ther many donations of beer and tombola prizes. Also to the church and City of Culture volunteers who helped with visitors to the church during the festival period.

24 24 As part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 the 39th Hull Real Ale and Cider Festival took place in Hull Minster. RSM once again sponsored the Festival Guide for Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA and it boasted RSM branding throughout as did the Minster itself. The event, held over 3 days, was tremendously popular to the extent that despite several hundred Ales and Ciders being available the place was dry by Saturday afternoon. There was one especially brewed for RSM amongst those on offer by Atom Brewery. All of Atomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beers have a scientific connotation and the beer was called Vis Major which means superior force in Latin. It was a great session beer with a tweaked malt and a light hop characteristic.

WHALEBONE REGIONAL POTY RUNNER UP BY HOWARD JOY The presentation for the Yorkshire CAMRA Pub of the Year runner up took place at the Whalebone, Wincolmlee, Hull on Saturday 11th November. Peter Goddard, Deputy Regional Organiser was there to do the honours and make the presentation to the landlord, Jamie Reading (below)

To achieve runner up to likes of the Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield is no mean feat and Peter referred to the quality and choice of the beer and cider at the Whalebone as well as the friendly and very helpful bar staff Danielle (pictured bottom right with Jamie), Jess and Jo. Peter also referred to the long history of the pub and paid tribute to the late Alex Craig and Tina who ran the pub from 2002 until Jamie took over in 2014. Jamie thanked Peter and acknowledged the award by encouraging those present to “Keep drinking the beer” – Alex’s favourite catchphrase.

The beer at the Whalebone is always excellent being given time to condition fully in the cellar and Jamie puts on a rotating selection of the best beers available locally and nationally with two dark beers always on offer. The range of ciders has been increased and helped the pub gain Hull Branch Cider Pub of the Year award recently. The pub is a traditional community

PUBS PRESERVATION SOCIETY This quarter I thought I’d focus on the National Heritage List for England, more generally known as the list of Listed Buildings, which is now maintained by Historic England. To be included on the list a building does not have to simply be old as the criterion for listing is that it should be of architectural or historic special interest. It is for this reason that in Hull specifically such diverse structures as a bridge over a drain, Hull’s iconic K6 cream coloured telephone boxes and Ye Olde White Harte public house are included. Each has their merit in terms of their history, specific design elements or connection with a famous architect.

Listed buildings are split into three grades with Grade 1 being the highest grade (Hull Minster for example) followed by Grade 2* (star) then Grade 2. There probably is a reason why these grades are not simply 1, 2 and 3 but I’m not aware of it. If anyone reading this is aware then maybe they could enlighten me, I’m always ready to learn! For this first article I thought I’d focus on those pubs in the City of Kingston upon Hull. The number of pubs in the city that are included on the list is really quite impressive, forming as they do over 6% of all the listed buildings in the city. Not all of the buildings on the list were built as pubs or hotels, with sympathetic conversions from banks and other uses accounting for a fair few in relatively recent years. BY KEN SMITH The purpose of listing a building is not to “preserve it in aspic” but rather to protect those aspects of it that make it what it is and has become over the years. It does not, therefore, mean that an owner cannot make any alterations to it or change its use. It does, however, mean that there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled before any work can go ahead. As each building and the way in which it is used is unique it is almost impossible to give a generic set of rules so anyone wishing to do work on such a building is well advised to contact the conservation officer at the relevant local planning department first. In Hull of course this means ringing 300300 and asking to speak to the conservation officer in the planning department. While it is not always necessary to receive planning permission for work to a listed building it is almost always necessary to get listed building consent. When an application is received the planning department has to decide whether the proposal and the building are of such significance that it has to be referred to Historic England. With most listed buildings the proposals are such that this is not necessary but the recent high profile case involving the removal of the second bar in Ye Olde White Harte meant that this had to be done along with the usual letters and public notices. While local and even national objections, in this instance from CAMRA’s Pubs Heritage Group, did carry some weight in the removal of the proposal from the application it was mainly the direction from Historic England that the application be refused that led to the amendment that was eventually approved. At the time there were a number of comments relating to this branch’s supposed approval of the proposal.

with all the modern catering equipment behind it in order to create additional seating areas and using the cleared bar top as a drinks resting surface, to be an acceptable compromise. As part of my duties as Pubs Protection Officer it is my responsibility to keep an eye on proposals relating to all pubs but naturally there is a slightly greater emphasis on protecting listed buildings from unwanted and unwarranted alterations. I do this by regularly inspecting the planning applications on the council web site but also by simply keeping my eyes open and seeing what us going on around the city. However I cannot be everywhere so if anyone sees work being carried out on a listed building that they think is inappropriate then they should first check the planning applications register to see if any approval has been granted. The best way to do this is to access the Hull City Council web site on www. hull.gov.uk and type planning applications in 31 the search box, on the next screen scroll down to Planning Applications and click. From there it’s just a few quick clicks to get you to the search box where typing the name or address of the property will display a list of any and all applications relating to it. Alternatively, if the building in question is a pub, then you can always e-mail me at the e-mail address in the inside cover of this magazine giving details of the property and the work being undertaken and I can make the necessary enquiries on behalf of the branch.

from the chair by angela cawte You may already have read I have now resumed the role of Chairperson for the Hull and East Yorkshire branch. As I have never left the committee since standing down previously it is a matter of moving seats but it is a pleasure to be further involved with a group of such diverse and interesting people, many of whom I have the pleasure of considering my friends. As far as the campaign is concerned there is always something to do, recently as a branch our focus has been concentrated on ensuring our delayed 2017 festival was the best it could be. Now, we are moving on to organising the branch’s Pub of the Year competition which is our way of recognising which of the three pubs in Hull, our towns and our villages offer the very best the real ale drinker can hope to experience. Many congratulations are extended to Jamie Reading who achieved runner up in the Regional Pub of the Year held by CAMRA, 34 unfortunately I was unable to be at the presentation made at the Whalebone but to know that Hull now has one of the 3 best pubs, in CAMRA’s terms, throughout the whole of the Yorkshire region is a source of great pride. Average Prices -to continue with the occasional debate we run within Pub Mirror from time to time , Back in early September I was packing for a short break in Harrogate when the local radio station KCFM news desk rang, I was expecting to be asked for a quote on the newly published Good Beer Guide so I was surprised when I was asked for my opinion on a survey undertaken by the rival publication which had been monitoring beer prices and as Yorkshire had come out as one of the cheapest places, I was asked to comment on local prices, which I did. Perhaps you heard it? It also prompted me to consider where and what we are paying as from earlier visits to places all over the Yorkshire region. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

So whilst in Harrogate I wrote down all the beers we drank, ABV and price and I have followed the same habit in other places since. Harrogate started at a Mitchells and Butler pub, sadly the worst beer in terms of quality and a shock in terms of price at £4.50 for two very uninspiring halves. The best of the pubs was the Montpellier , in my opinion, where I enjoyed Old Peculier so good I had more than one, this is usually my personal rule of thumb, particularly good as I enjoyed three rounds. Another pub where the quality was questionable was the Blues Bar, auto-backs are used here, not a good thing in my opinion and fortunately these are becoming rarer but certainly interesting to see in use. The other venue worthy of note was Sterlings Independent Beer and Coffee House, probably our overall favourite with a wide selection of craft beers, hand pulled ales and other drinks of all kinds, we even went there for breakfast! Over all the quality we experienced was generally very high but we paid for it, the average cost of a pint was £4.38- expensive possibly but I look forward to returning whenever I get the chance! Readers may have heard of the sad death of Neil in early October of pancreatic cancer following a short illness. Neil will be remembered, among other things, for rescuing from obscurity the failing Monks Walk in Beverley. He opened its doors back in April of last year, selling Locales from nearby breweries such as Brass Castle, Great Newsome, Wold Top and Yorkshire Brewing. The pub quickly proved popular with local drinkers and is featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2018. Neil's vision was to acquire the freehold of the building to restore its fabric and fully open the upper floors of this historically important Listed Building. Neil's widow, Gill and her two sons, Gerald and Tim wish to continue his vision and are seeking investors to enable the Monks Walk Inn Ltd to purchase the freehold. A light 4% Pale ale with a lingering citrus note from the use of Amarillo & Cascade hops. Another first was the creation of Minster Ale. An easy drinkable pale ale at 4.2% which both were showcased at the Branches Real Ale & Cider festival in November with the proceeds of the Minster ale been donated to the Minster. Along with these the other ales available at the festival were Moondance 4.5% (wheat beer); Mutiny 4.2% (porter) ; Raspberry Tipple 4.8% (fruit/wheat beer) & Waverider 5.2% (American IPA).

SURVEY TRIP TO HORNSEA Our fifth trip of the year took us to the Hornsea area and in particular to the Hornsea Beer Festival including the pubs of the town.

Our first stop was at the Blue Bell, Old Ellerby A 16th century inn consisting of one large room divided into distinct areas including a small snug with its own fireplace. This pub is popular with the local community and also has its own outdoor bowling green and fishing pond. Serving regular beers from Great Newsome and Tetley; also available was Cotliegh 25 a pale golden beer first brewed as an 40 anniversery beer for the brewery.

The pub itself is a large two roomed pub over looking the beach with sea views. Along with the Greene King the bar usually has 2 changing beers.

We then headed into the town centre and the 2nd Hornsea Beer Festival based in and around Stackhouse and the local museum garden area. The festival featured 30+ real ales, craft beers and ciders from breweries such as Brass Castle, Great Newsome, Yorkshire Brewing Company, Electric Bear, Tiny Rebel, Vocation, Atom, Brew York, Red Willow, Bad Seed, Magic Rock and Thornbridge.

Our next pub was the Cross Keys (below) at Cowden where there were amongst other beers Rat Brewery Pet Rat and Great Newsome Pricky Back Otchan. This newly refurbished rural pub with through lounge and two separate bars is owned by the same family as the adjacent holiday park complex. Our final drink of the day was at the New Inn in Hornsea, a friendly pub with large open bar/ lounge. On offer were two real ales namely Slightly Foxed and Saltaire No5.

After an enjoyable stay at Cowden the coach took us on to Hornsea and the Marine Hotel which was serving Greene King Barmy Army, a limited-edition easy drinking 3.7%ABV, golden beer. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

CAMRA CLUB OF THE YEAR - THE FINAL FOUR The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has named the best four clubs in the country as part of its Club of the Year 2018 competition, one of the most respected and well-known club awards in the UK. Among the finalists are two Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) clubs - the Albatross Club in Bexhill-on-Sea and the Real Ale Farm in Bargoed, Wales. The Albatross was a finalist last year and took home the national title in 2016. It boasts an interesting collection of RAF memorabilia and regularly holds beer festivals and social events. The Real Ale Farm is housed in the oldest surviving building in Bargoed, dating back to the 17th century. It offers the best range of quality beers for miles around, selected for flavour and interest and sourced from breweries both near and far. It hosts numerous charity events throughout the year.

Village Hall in Warrington, a former school that has previously taken home the National CAMRA Club of the Year title for its agriculturalthemed interior and local beer range. The club has recently introduced a new gin bar, which is also proving to be very popular with members.

Finally, the Flixton Conservative Club in Manchester is in the running after a recent transformation has seen an even wider range of real ales and ciders brought in. The club runs monthly brewery nights and a number of sports team and quiz events. The CAMRA Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine with the simple aim of finding the clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale – those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition. SURVEY TRIP TO HEDON On Sunday 8th October we started our last GBG survey trip to the Hedon area of our region, The intrepid group set off from Hull Truck at noon and in total managed to visit 7 pubs along the way;

Burstwick, a late addition to the trip.

Here are a few photos from the trip, starting with the group relaxing during the trip at the Nags Head, Preston where the group enjoyed Tim Taylor Landlord and Old Golden Hen.

The group visited both the Humber Tavern and the Royal Oak in Paull, and this is the view from Paull across the Humber to the bridge.

The second picture is the bar at the New Royal Mail at Thorngumbald.

The trip also took in the village of Hedon where we enjoyed some great beers at Shakespeare, Hedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;On Inn and Station.

BIG JOB CROWNED CHAMPION BOTTLE BEER Big Job from St Austell Brewery has been crowned the Champion Bottled Beer of Britain in CAMRA's prestigious annual award which recognises the best bottle-conditioned real ale in the country.

Big Job is a big beer. At 7.2% ABV it is powerfully hoppy with both citra and centennial hops, and is jammed full of Cornish barley. With a smooth, citrus fruit taste and a hoppy, lemon smell, it is anything but subtle. Runners up include Fullers' Vintage Ale which took home silver, and Oakham's Green Devil IPA which won Bronze. Roger Ryman, (below) Head Brewer at St Austell said: "In a market where there are so many fantastic beers available including two of my own personal favourites - Fullers' Vintage Ale and Oakham's Green Devil IPA - it is a huge honour to take home the crown. This 44 award is a huge testament to the hard work of our brewing and bottling teams which are very dedicated to producing fantastic beers."

CAMRA's National Director responsible for the competition Nick Boley says: "Congratulations to St Austell for winning the Champion Bottled Beer of Britain award, one of the highest accolades in the beer world." Christine Cryne, master beer trainer and judge adds: "The standard of competition was fantastically high. Big Job is a moreish, golden beer with honey caramelised citrus notes, refreshingly smooth with a warming finish with increasing spicy dry bitter notes and a soft fruity nose. "We were particularly impressed with how well balanced it was - we were looking for a beer which showed the brewers art of complexity, and that just gave it the edge."

The judging and announcement took place at the BBC Good Food Show at the Birmingham NEC, following a series of local member voting rounds and regional judging competitions throughout the year. Visitors to the BBC Good Food Show will now have the opportunity to sample the winning beer along with other finalists at a number of tutored beer tasting events run by famous beer writers as part of the Great Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
