HULL PUBS UPDATE BY JON MAJOR the Brain Jar. The Atom Brewing Co. Corn Exchange invests its full attention into offering knowledgeable service and helpful expertise.
Already heading to almost half way through the year and pub wise I would say this second quarter has been quite good with a couple of pubs opening in our area.
“We’ll have 16 keg lines and four cask, joined by up to 100 cans and bottles from around the world, plus an exciting spirit and cocktail range” says Nick Kirman, Operations Manager. “By only stocking brands that share the Atom ethos of quality, we’re committed to elevating Hull’s drinking experience.”
Let’s start with Oscars on Silver Street which have reinstalled a couple of lines of real ale and real cider. White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street has now re-opened after 7 long years of closure. This is run by Crafty Little Brewery of Brough and are showcasing all local ales and also some from afar. I must say on a personal note that it is so good to see this venue back open and looking splendid. Not only is the ale of very good quality it is also offering a food menu to match, all this as well as two full size shuffle boards.
“Corn Exchange has been a drinking establishment for over 300 years,” adds Nick. “Atom is hoping to push this tradition further than ever and firmly root itself in the centre of the city.” Complementing an impressive range of beers, spirits and cocktails from across the globe, the friendly bar presents a specially designed menu of small plates by the KerbEdge Street Food team and locally roasted coffee from The Blending Room. We wish them well.
Another new venue is Off The Road Live Lounge which is situated at the top of Princes Avenue and the corner of Spring Bank. This is a retro type music bar offering hand pulled ales both local and national, also offering a CAMRA members discount, thank you Craig and Janie and good luck in a great looking venue.
Unfortunately one pub that has closed is Holderness on Holderness Road and the Kingston on the old Hedon Road is up for freehold sale.
Xanders on Newland Avenue has now reopened under the name of Harrington’s I must admit I have not as yet paid a visit, but, I promise by the next edition I will have a report.
Polar Bear on Spring Bank is now a freehold having been bought from Marstons. It is now doing as well as ever and hosting its very popular ‘Sesh’ nights.
Atom Brewery have refurbishing the centuriesold Corn Exchange Pub on Lowgate and reopen on 14th June. They have creating a space that they hope will be both welcoming and flexible. Sitting beside the beautiful Hull Minster and a stone’s throw from popular drinking spots the likes of Head of Steam and
Gardeners Arms on Cottingham Road has undergone a refurb and unfortunately reduced its number of hand pulls but I’m sure the quality will not be reduced, they are also still offering members’ discount. The Olde White Harte on Silver Street will once again serve food. The catering will be run by Tony Norrie from Texas Tony’s Café in Hessle Road. Mr Norrie said: “The restaurant will be spread throughout the pub but it will be mainly upstairs which has only been open to private groups in the past. The restaurant will be run by me while the landlord, Mike Woolass will run the pub but it will be all part of the same premises”’

HOLDERNESS PUBS UPDATE BY BRIAN JOHNSON This report is not easy to write as sadly I have to report several pub closures
with no intention of running it as a pub The Roos Arms in Roos was closed for a short while but is now open again
The Travellers Rest in Long Riston closed suddenly before Christmas and the Hilyard Arms in Patrington is closed apparently because the landlord was taken seriously ill.
The Bay Horse at Arnold is up for sale but I have no further details at present
The Alexandra in Hornsea has been sold and is apparently been turned into flats.
A bit of good news that I have been given permission to report is that the Stackhouse Bar in Hornsea is branching out and opening another bar in Bridlington. Based near Boots it is expected to open before Christmas and will be known as Stackhouse Bridlington
The Board Inn in Skipsea which has been up for sale for some months, I am now given to understand it has been sold to a local builder

HESSLE PUBS NEWS FROM BRIAN NELSON A change of licensee in March 2018 at the Marquis of Granby in Hessle Square. The new licensee has four hand pumps in the bar dispensing Great Newsome Sleck Dust, Gt Yorkshire Brewing Yorkshire Gold, Sharp’s Doom Bar and a draught cider, at the time of writing. The Sleck Dust and Yorkshire Gold were very well kept and the pub is now selling good, tasty ales from the smaller breweries.
Regarding the Hase, they now have three cask ales on most of the time (Tim Taylor’s Boltmaker plus two rotating guests) and it is always in great condition. What with the Hase and Granby, Norland (selling 2 or 3 well-kept), and Country Park Inn on the foreshore (which had 3 hand pumps going the last time I was in a few months ago), Hessle is now well worth a visit for discerning real ale drinkers and a trip there from Hull by bus (EYMS 66 or 57 - 20 minutes, or Park & Ride) or by train (10 minutes) will not be a wasted journey.
At long last, the Hase has some competition as the best real ale pub in Hessle, not only on the quality of their beer but also on price (Hase £3.25 a pint, Granby £2.40/£2.50). Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS UPDATE BY MARK BAINTON The Carpenters Arms in Market Weighton was re-launched towards the end of 2017 by new landlords Mark and Caroline Atkinson, one-time of the Half Moon, Newton-Upon-Derwent, and the Oddfellows Arms, Wilberfoss. The pub went through a difficult period under two different landlords in 2016/2017, after owners Hawthorn Leisure gave it a minimalist style makeover, which didn’t appeal to the regular customers, and resulted in a dramatic loss of clientele.
A resident craft ale, lagers, traditional ciders, fine wines and a well acclaimed gin menu will also be on offer. Opening times 3 - 11 Mon Thurs, Fri 3pm - 11.45pm Sat. 2pm - 11.45pm & Sun 2pm - 11pm. Owned and run by Shirley Bamforth of the Hed’On Inn with the help of Manager Sarah Mason and Asst Manager Pauline Copley and newly appointed local staff. 5% discount for CAMRA members.
Mark and Caroline carried out another complete refurbishment, just one year after the previous makeover, to take it back to the style of a more cosy traditional local community pub, which has been bringing the regulars back, along with new faces.
Coach and Anchor at Tickton is being refurbished and be open in the coming months. Very pleased that Fox and Coney, South Cave re-opened last October. They give a ten percent discount to CAMRA members. The pub is also dog friendly.
Mark bought out free of tie on his pumps, to turn it into a free house, initially selling 3 cask ales, which comprise of Theakstons Best Bitter and constantly changing light ales and dark ales on the other 2 pumps. Due to customer demand a fourth pump was added to dispense John Smith Cask.
Sun Inn Beverley - Just a quick update, Richard tells us he has secured a further five year lease at The Sun Inn, having taken over in 2011! We are very glad to hear this. You may see a few pubs up for lease, this is to do with change of ownership from Punch Taverns to either Star Heineken or Patron Capital.
Half Moon at Skidby accredited with the Cask Marque. Opened on Friday 25th May 2018, the Hugh Fitz-Baldric in Cottingham, named after a local Cottingham man from the 1400’s who became the first Sheriff of Yorkshire. They will be serving 9 cask ales some permanent, at least one LocAle & the others changing each week to enable real ale enthusiasts to constantly try new brewers and ales from up and down the country. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
Ship Inn Sewerby, held a bush-craft day for families over the May bank holiday .Getting into the Royal wedding party mood, the pub put on 5 course Royal Wedding meal and British ales day on the 19th . PUBS PRESERVATION SOCIETY BY KEN SMITH There is currently a great deal of concern around the closure and redevelopment of pubs across the country and our area is no different to any other. As mentioned in previous articles and regularly reported at the branch open meetings applications to change the use of pubs to residential and other uses are coming thick and fast. As a matter of course such applications are dealt with on their merits and in accordance with both the National Planning Policy Framework and the relevant local authority’s Local Plan (in our area the local plans are those of Hull City Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council). Such applications, if they are approved, will naturally directly affect the pub by removing either the use or the building or both.
of development has potentially affected a pubs ability to operate. One such was the Mariners Arms in Driffield where developers have been given permission to build on almost half the car park. Fortunately, there has, to date, been no real adverse effect on the pubs viability. A more recent such case is that of the New Inn at Tickton where the new owner has applied for permission to build 3 dwellings (2 houses and a bungalow) on the car park, taking not just some but all of the car park away from the pub. The new owner has declared his intention to refurbish and re-open the pub as a “village local” where customers would be local and therefore there would be minimal need for car parking on site.
There have been numerous cases in the branch area over the last 4 years while I have been the Pubs Protection Officer where this has been the case and most have been commented on in previous articles and meeting reports as well as having been objected to in the strongest possible terms.
While CAMRA naturally applauds the reopening of any closed pub the loss of the whole car park brings with it the danger of the pub not being viable due to lack of custom. Following discussions with the new owner of the pub, CAMRA has received an undertaking that on-site parking, albeit a reduced number of spaces, will now be provided to help the long term viability of the venture. CAMRA awaits developments on this application and the refurbishment of the New Inn with interest.
There are, however, other threats that can indirectly affect the ability of a pub to operate its business. One of these is inappropriate development adjacent to an existing use. What this means is that if, for example, a developer wants to build a house (or houses) next to a business that creates a lot of noise or smells there could be subsequent complaints from new residents that could seriously affect the running of the pre-existing business.
It is for instances such as these that CAMRA must remain vigilant and continue to investigate and address potential threats to pubs. However, it is not always possible for one person to pick up on everything that is happening in what is a vast area and covers many hundreds of pubs. I would therefore ask if anyone sees or hears about developments that could affect a pub they contact me using the e-mail address at the front of Pub Mirror.
In the case of pubs of course the very nature of the business means that noise and disturbance will be created. This could be due to the regular comings and goings of patrons and delivery vehicles as well as the normal use of pub equipment and any entertainment that is provided. It is therefore important to monitor applications that are for sites that are either adjacent to or very close to pubs. Another threat which is most likely but not exclusively to affect rural and village pubs, is the loss of their car park. There have been a number of applications over the years where this type Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE BY KEN SMITH I’m sure you will all have been bombarded in the last few weeks with e-mails and letters from the various organisations and companies you deal with on a daily basis informing you about the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which came into effect on 25 May and replaced the old Data Protection Act. CAMRA is of course no different to any of these organisations and we have to abide by the new regulations.
Pub Mirror it is not always possible for people to have ready access to those sources and can sometimes take some finding whereas an e-mail with specific information can be easily read from most devices and will contain all the relevant information in one place. Finally, as I have said, the campaign holds personal data on all its members and in relation to this has a very strong and up to date Privacy Policy. This can be read by logging in to the CAMRA website and scrolling to the bottom of the home page where there is a link.
As a holder of personal information about our members we have to ensure that it is held securely and that we only use it for the specific purpose those data were collected. We also have to give our members the option to opt out of receiving communications from us in any format and then abide by that member’s decision. All current members have a set of preferences showing if and how they wish to be contacted and these are held on the CAMRA secure database along with that member’s personal information. All members have access to their own data and can access it by signing in to the CAMRA website using their membership number and password and choosing the option to “Edit your membership information”. Clicking on the link will take members to the database where only their information will be displayed and allow them to amend and update many of their personal data.
I hope I haven’t bored you too much with this my first article as Membership Secretary but feel that it is important to let you know about how seriously we take personal information and also allow any members who may not know that they have options they can exercise.
With regard to contact either by CAMRA nationally or the local branch members should access the “preferences” tab where there are a number of options that require a simple yes or no. Current preferences can then be altered by clicking the Edit button at the bottom of the page. This will then ensure that members only receive the communications that they want. Naturally we would prefer members to opt in to receiving information about branch events and activities as it is a very effective way of getting the message about what we are doing to interested parties. While that information will be available on both the web site and here in Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

Our LocAle pubs are listed on the below and opposite.
CAMRA LocAle is an initiative which promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits • Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity • Local brewers who gain from increased sales • The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally • The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution • Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different.
NEW LOCALE PUBS
Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle. The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area.

REALLY USEFUL INFORMATION REAL ALE V SMOOTH
CAMRA HEAD OFFICE
What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

The dead beer is then resurrected by means of chemicals and served chilled by gas pressure through fonts. Smooth beer sales are also known as nitro-keg beer.

MEMBERS’ DISCOUNT SCHEME While it is important to make use of these offers to show that CAMRA uses those pubs offering discount the following Motion was proposed and carried at the conference in Coventry earlier this year: “This Conference believes that no CAMRA member or Branch should ask for, or expect, a permanent discount from any pub or brewery, but if a business wants to offer CAMRA members a discount, this be respected but not expected.” This is a fundamental change to the way in which CAMRA has previously approached this matter and as a result it is important that CAMRA members respect this decision and do not ask for discount at the point of service unless it is specifically advertised in the pub or has been reported elsewhere by the local branch. Details of local discounts for members are published in Pub Mirror, on the web site and in social media as well as at local events such as the Real Ale & Cider Festival. In addition the branch will endeavour to supply pubs which notify us that they are offering a discount with the necessary publicity materials in the form of posters and window stickers like the one on the opposite page. Feel like you could or would like to do more for CAMRA but don’t know where to start? CAMRA membership is about more than just discounts and Wetherspoons vouchers, nice as they are. Locally there is a small but dedicated band of people who make things work in terms of producing and publishing this magazine, updating the What Pub site, running the beer festival, organising social trips and the many other activities which help ensure CAMRA is represented in this area. Despite the fact that there are almost 1,300 members in the Hull & East Yorkshire branch the average attendance at open meetings is 25. Naturally this is very disappointing to those of us who are actively involved and while we know that not everyone can afford the time to carry out some of the official branch roles there are other ways to show that you care and want to do something to help support Real Ale & Cider in the area. Keep an eye on the branch diary published on the web site and in Pub Mirror and feel free to ask about what’s going on in the branch. You may feel that you could; • fill a role on the committee • take up one of the associate positions that may be vacant • come along on one of the social activities • be part of the survey trips that are conducted in order to assess beer quality for possible inclusion in future editions of the Good Beer Guide. You may have some great ideas about what we should do, how things could be improved, how to make members more involved or just know of a pub whose beer is so great it is worthy of consideration for the Guide. You can contact any member of the committee using the contact details on page 3 of this magazine but just for information you can always contact me using the e-mail address – members@hull. camra.org.uk.

WHAT IS WHAT PUB? For a number of years, people have been asking why CAMRA as the UK's largest and most influential pub-going consumer organisation doesn't have its own online pub guide. Well now it does. You can use whatpub.com to search for pubs across the UK and then look up opening times, descriptions, facilities and of course details of the real ale and cider on offer. Being an online guide means that extra functions such as additional text for descriptions, photos and live map data are also available When you search for pubs on whatpub.com you will not see just Good Beer Guide pubs, and there is no way of searching specifically for Good Beer Guide pubs - so you will still need the book or Mobile App (coming later) to find the very best real ale pubs. How it all started... CAMRA's online pub guide is the result of an immense amount of work by volunteers and staff. A decision was made at the start to acknowledge the local expertise of CAMRA members, which is why the pub details and descriptions that appear on whatpub.com come from CAMRA branches. 150,000 volunteers have an input into WhatPub and this is what makes CAMRA's pub guide so different (and we would say better) from other online pub guides.

POTY 2017 PRESENTATIONS One of the highlights of the year is making presentations to our Branch’s Pubs of the Year. Events in March 2018 proved to be just a little bit more challenging than usual. Firstly where as the best of our best were very far flung; too far from the others to make all the presentations during one trip, which has been our practice previously. I therefore organised two separate weekend trips, each on subsequent weekends, but one on Saturday and the other on the following Sunday. The Beast from the East intervened, so in conclusion we were able more than ever to experiment with when we arrange trips.
Year on the premises. Wonderful views of Flamborough Head can be enjoyed along with a real ale or two from the bar of the best pub in all our branch’s towns. The Marine Bar has held its place in the Good Beer Guide for many years and has previously been runner up, so it was extremely pleasing to acknowledge the very high standards maintained for so long. The presentation was made in front of a number of Bridlington based members who had responded to my invitation to attend. Presentation to Julie Porter at Marine Bar (below)
The first trip, undertaken on a lovely warm and sunny spring day took us initially to Thorngumbald. There I presented the runnerup in the Village Pub of the Year to the New Royal Mail’s Paul Smith (below) A second attempt at visiting our Village Pub of the Year and Town Runner-up was sucessful on a Thursday evening. We started off by presenting Runner-up to Chequers Micro-pub in Beverley to Ian Allott (pictured below)
There it was a pleasure to acknowledge the efforts made and passion invested to continue to provide the village of Thorngumbald with a pub and all the aspects a village pub can bring to a community. From Thorngumbald we went on to Bridlington, as I am not driver myself the detour made by the driver left me wondering where we going but.......
and his team, this has been a favorite of our members for some years. Unfortunately at the time of the visit Ian was undertaking some decorating and all the pump badges which have tracked the development of so many of our local brewers since the pub opened were missing. These badges champion the support all these brewers have had here I hope this continues for a very long time.
Our destination was the Marine Bar, on Bridlington’s North Bay and purpose to present Town Pub of the Year to its management team. This is a very unusual venue as to many it seems like a hotel bar, but it is run separately as a stand alone pub. Hotel guests are of course fortunate that they have our Town Pub of the Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

BY ANGELA CAWTE On to Goodmanham, Village Pub of the Year. The Goodmanham Arms was in the course being refurbished by Vito and Abbie when I first became active in the branch. so this now goes back some years. Fast forward to the present day and the Goodmanham Arms continues to charm, Abbie and Vito, pictured below, therefore were again
Jamie also earlier in the year was awarded Yorkshire Regions Pub of the Year runner - up. Below Jamie shows both well deserved awards.
From the Whalebone we went on to the George Hotel, the Pub of the Year. It was luck rather than design which left us able to combine a presentation with the branch AGM, Fittingly of course it was appropriate to hold the AGM in ‘the best pub’. Unlike all the other pubs presented this year the George Hotel has not previously been acknowledged since licensees Kim and Alan (below) took over. They have
worthy winners of an award they have been making their own. With a wide selection of styles well kept real ale in a welcoming village local it really is a gem. If you are one of the few real ale enthusiasts yet to visit you will not be disappointed. Hull Pub of the Year both winner and runner up were presented on the same evening of the branch AGM. So we met up earlier than usual at the Whalebone where presentation of the Runner-up certificate was made to Jamie Reading. Under Jamie’s stewardship the pub has maintained high standards laid down by
made vast improvements since taking the lease, the pub had struggled before them to stay open, but their energy and enthusiasm coupled with a dedication to real ale have brought this historic pub back to life in so many ways. On behalf of all branch members and in particular those who participated in the process, I would like to offer our congratulations to all those involved!! (Thanks to Ken Smith and his trusty SLR for the presentation photographs)

BOARD INN RECEIVES NATIONAL CAMRA AWARD The Board Inn pub in Bridlington has been highly commended in the prestigious Pub Design Awards from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) held in association with Historic England. The award recognises high standards of architecture in the refurbishment and the conservation of existing pubs. Winning the judges over with its newly renovated interior, pleasingly low light, and a curious menagerie of taxidermied animals with fascinating stories behind them.
and much painted wooden panelling restored. The rooms are nicely distinguished from each other in terms of decor and comfort. One judge even described them as “some of the best ‘traditional’ pub rooms I have been in in a long time.” The Hull and East Yorkshire branch chairperson Angela Cawte presented the award to representatives of the pub’s management on Sunday 25 March 2018, as pictured below.
The 17th century pub is a major landmark on Bridlington’s High Street, and its refurbishment – by local entrepreneurs Joanne and Paul Wheeler – was a key component in East Riding Council’s regeneration of the whole of the historic Old Town. The pub’s interior has been carefully treated, with historically-sensitive wooden floors repaired

HULL REAL ALE & CIDER FESTIVAL 2018 There were also the 70 plus CAMRA members, the church volunteers and COC staff volunteers who helped to make sure everyone was looked after and supported the festival. The Hull Minster staff also need to be recongnised for their hard work, lead by James Symonds and included Dave, the verger and his team. Unfortunately there are too many people to mention, but each and every one of you are thanked for the help and support shown. This year’s festival saw a couple of new local brewers represented for the first time, Black Mill from Beverley and Vision from Hull. We also welcomed a new (to us) local cider producer Hedgehogger. I am pleased to say that they were all well received. In total 18 local ale brewers and cider producers were represented at the festival and I would like to thank them all for their help and support yet again.
It only seemed like 6 months ago when we held our last festival, wait a minute it was. Yes we moved to November last year because of the work renovating and upgrading the Minster. So we were very pleased to arrive and find no builders, machines or scaffolding. If you have not been to the Minster yet, you must go along and see what a gem of a building we have here in Hull.
In total we had 190 different brews from 110
When I think what it looked like just 6 years ago when we first held out festival here, a big well done to all concerned in turning this into a must see venue. The new and improved venue yet again saw us set attendance festival records and over 11,000 pints of beer, cider and perry were consumed by our eager customers. We thank you all for your support.
different brewers and producers which is a record for the festival, how we will better that is a challenge but we will of course try. It was also pleasing for us to get to close down on Saturday night rather than half way through the day as has been usual in recent years.
I must say a big thank you to the following: Hull CAMRA festival committee for their work over the past 6 months to enable the festival to go ahead: Paul Ashton, Mark Bainton, Angela Cawte, Tony Garrett, Jon Major, Pete Mason. Ken Smith and Mark Spight.

BY BERNIE CAWTE, FESTIVAL ORGANISER were a couple of one offs supplied by Yorkshire Brewing Co. These included a special ale to commemorate our Branch’s 40th beer festival, along with several casks of their ‘Minster Ale’, which they supplied free-of-charge to help raise funds for the church.
I would like to express my thanks to our festival sponsors, the main sponsors as shown at the bottom of these pages, without whose help and support we would find it difficult to do the job we do. All of them have been sponsoring us for several years so many thanks to them for that belief in what we are doing and the message we are trying to get across. There are also our ‘cask sponsors’ which included our LocAle brewers and several local pubs. Again that support is very much appreciated. The food stalls this year included Chilli Devil’s, German sausages and the church cafe. Other stalls were provided by Chucking Cheese and the Blending Room.
This generous gift from Yorkshire Brewing company plus other donations from return of tokens and glasses you donated to the church raised an additional £375.86 to the church funds. Thank you on behalf of the church and CAMRA.
Festival music was organised by Andy BassetScott and again his support and those of the artists is very much appreciated. Pictured below is Gene Pool Brewery’s Lindsey Simpson showing more of his obvious talents.
It was a lot of hard work for all involved especially as it was so close to the last festival, but at the end of the day we are here to get the real ale message across and to promote real ale and other quality beers, including under our revised constitution craft and ‘keg’ beers. Hopefully for the next festival in April next year there will be some changes in what we will be offering.
Finally my last thanks must go to you all, the public from Hull and beyond (51 branches of CAMRA had members join us at this festival). So thanks go all and I hope to see you there again on 9th to 11th APRIL 2019, cheers.

HULL REAL ALE & CIDER FESTIVAL STAFF TRIP 2018 On a random day any time after the festival we take as many volunteers as we can away for the day. We always visit a place of interest outside of the branch area, more than anything for a change of scene for those involved.

BY ANGELA CAWTE to What Pub for details of the many pubs we visited. After dragging ourselves away, and for some it was more of an effort, we went back to Hull via Castleford. At Castleford we stopped briefly at the Junction, famed for its use of wooden casks. It would not be fair to single out particular pubs in preference to others. I know I visited places others didn’t and vice versa Here are some of the pubs visited: The Hop, Wakefield Beer Exchange, Old Print Works, Harry’s Bar, Priory Bar and Ale House The entire day was an opportunity to relax with friends and celebrate the hard work we had all done towards the festival. I’m already looking forward to the next one!
From the response of our group all of whom would have happily stayed longer than we had arranged, Wakefield is clearly a destination for those who appreciate a good beer. Please refer

REVITALISATION UPDATE CAMRA members have voted to approve change following the largest consultation in our 47 year history. Members have voted to approve all but one of our National Executive's (CAMRA's board of directors) recommendations designed to take the organisation into the future.
To act as the voice and represent the interests of all pub goers and beer, cider and perry drinkers The changes will see us put increased focus on educating members (and non-members) about different types of beer. It also sees campaigning for real cider and perry added to the objects for the first time, as well as recognising pub and club protection as a key object for the organisation.
Almost 18,000 members voted online and at the AGM, held in Coventry in April, to express their views on changes to CAMRA's Articles of Association to re-define the organisation's purpose and campaigning activities.
CAMRA's outgoing National Chairman, Colin Valentine said: "The recommendations for change that we made to the membership were based entirely on feedback received from members when we consulted with them as part of the Revitalisation Project.
Members voted to remove the organisation's current "objects" in the Articles of Association - the statement of what the Campaign exists to achieve. In place of the old objects, members voted to approve recommendations to add in new objectives for the Campaign, designed to make the organisation more inclusive, relevant and welcoming:
"It was the largest consultation CAMRA has ever carried out and we listened to the views of over 25,000 of our members, who filled in online surveys and attended consultation meetings across the country.
To secure the long term future of real ale, real cider and real perry by increasing their quality, availability and popularity
"We were determined to give every single member the right to have the final say on the recommendations by voting on the changes to the Articles of Association. The membership has taken advantage of that right and made its views clear.
To promote and protect pubs and clubs as social centres as part of the UK's cultural heritage
"We're delighted that all but one of the Special Resolutions was approved, which shows the majority of members agreed with the consultation findings that CAMRA needs to change to remain a relevant and effective campaigning organisation.
To increase recognition of the benefits of responsible, moderate social drinking To play a leading role in the provision of information, education and training to all those with an interest in beer, cider and perry of any type
"The hard work now starts to define new strategies to position CAMRA where our members have told us they want it to be. We appreciate that, that while the majority of members voted in favour most of the recommendations, there is some disagreement about how we deliver the required changes.
To ensure, where possible, that producers and retailers of beer, cider and perry act in the best interests of the customer. However, the majority of members did not approve the recommendation to add one additional object the Articles of Association: Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

REVITALISATION UPDATE "We need to do all we can to reassure all members that our core campaigning objectives remain focussed on real ale, cider and perry as ever. Those who called for more far reaching changes, which has not been supported in the vote, and those who disagreed with any change, can be confident that their contribution to the Campaign remains as valued as ever - and that all members can continue to work together to achieve common objectives."
the first instance it is down to pub landlords to consistently serve up decent pints of beer and CAMRA to do whatever they can to help. We need to get things into perspective. CAMRA will not find a cure for cancer. It will not find justice for the poor and dispossessed. It will not promote peace in the world. Those were not the aims for which it was set up. It was set up so that those of us who enjoy a certain type of beer can continue to enjoy it, in all its rich variety. We do not tell anyone else what to drink; we never have and never will. At most, we would just prefer that they did it in a pub.
What does it mean to you and us? These comments were made by the editor of London Drinker CAMRA magazine Anyone who drinks anything other than real ale would be welcome to join CAMRA. You may be surprised to find yourselves among people who primarily like nothing better than to sit in a good pub enjoying a good beer. That said, while acknowledging the pressures that they are under, we should always remember that in

Hopefully, numbers will increase for future trips which are always the second weekend of the month May to October you will need to check whether it’s a Saturday or Sunday. Anyway, we set off in good spirits to our first stop which is a micro pub in Patrington by the name of Amy’s Bar which has only been open as a bar for a couple of years but was a café for many years. We were made very welcome with free sausage rolls and nibbles on the bar. They serve four ever changing cask ales as well as some boxed ciders on this occasion, Crafty Little Brewery Chameleon, Scarborough Brewery Transmission, Sharps Atlantic and Tetley’s Best Bitter
Stout, Sleck Dust and Brass Castle Misfit. We then visited the Plough in Hollym which is tucked out of the way just off the main road. Over the years it has been a regular entry in the Good Beer Guide because of the consistency of their ales. Five real ales were available, Half Moon’s Jon’s Blonde, Ainsty Ales Moloko Mild, Bantam Best, Greene King Abbot Ale and one badged for them called Withernsea RUFC, I understand all profits from this ale are donated to the rugby club I must also say thanks for the quiche and other nibbles which helped us stave of the hunger pangs whilst continuing with our daunting task.
Our second stop is one that is really out of the way in Patrington Haven, a free house called the Burns Head bought by the present owners just over a year ago they have done a lot of
We travelled on into Withernsea where we visited three pubs because of an error in my navigation we started off at the Captain Williams where an 80th birthday party was in full swing so as you can imagine it was rather busy. work in refurbishing it and it is now looking good. Last August they had a barbeque and an outside bar which was very well attended, and I understand another one is planned for this year. They have up to three hand pumps, although, when we visited only two were in use. Their ales are ever changing during our visit they had Hancock’s HB and Maxim Brewery All English. For our third stop we went to the Coach & Horses at Welwick, a village pub which also runs a local shop and has an excellent

He had enjoyed the opportunity to explore many new pubs in rural villages. He continued to describe us as the friendliest branch that he has been involved with.

FALKLANDS BEERWORKS BY JON MAJOR On a visit to the Falkland Islands I had to go and check out one of its newest additions ‘Falkland Beerworks’.
were there, the Globe has two taps and the others have just the one. It is also served in the officers mess at the military base. Jeff said his biggest hurdle was trying to teach the landlords/ladies how to keep and serve it as well as the cleaning of the lines as all this is completely alien to the pubs who have only ever served tinned beer in the past. Everything he uses for the brewery from all his equipment to the dry ingredient and bottles are shipped over from the UK which is an 8,000 mile journey and he chooses Thomas Fawcett and Sons Ltd of Castleford in Yorkshire to supply his grain and hops from Charles Faram and Simply Hops. He said one of the main problems is the waiting time on deliveries. So far he is brewing five different brews ‘Rock Hopper’,”Cape Pembroke”, ‘Longdon Pride’, ‘Black Tarn’, ‘Peat Cutter’ and ‘Iron Lady’. These cover a variety of different styles such as blonde, best bitter ,pale ale, IPA, mild and stout
The islands have never had draught beer let alone real ale, all they’ve had is canned and bottled beer that is shipped in. So installing real ale on tap is a major leap forward. Jeff Halliday, was on holiday in New Zealand when he had the idea of building a brewery and a very short six months later this dream became a reality when he opened what is probably the most remote brewery in the world. He went to Brewlab in Sunderland in the UK and attended a 3 week course and gained a certificate in practical brewing. On his return to the Falklands he started brewing in a garage until he built the brewery on its present site at 60 John Street, Port Stanley. It’s a small premises with only a 400 litre brewing capacity, which is not surprising as the island only has five pubs and a hotel as well as the military base which is 30 miles out of the capital.
When I visited I presented Jeff with a three bottle gift pack from Yorkshire Brewhouse, a Hull CAMRA beer festival t-shirt and polo shirt from Hull’s award winning pub The Whalebone.
Jeff works full time and all his spare time is spent at the brewery as the concept of real ale is growing stronger on the island. The first to take it on handpulled was The Malvina House Hotel who has supported Jeff from the start, this was shortly followed by the Victory Bar and most recently the Globe Tavern who actually first started serving it on draught whilst we Hull and and East East Yorkshire Yorkshire CAMRA CAMRA Hull
In the future he hopes to open a tasting room in the brewery which, hopefully will help educate more people in the wonderful taste and styles of ales from Falkland Beerworks.

With flavour forward hoppy beers very much the trend, the majority of beers being consumed remains in the 3.6-4.5% ABV pale goldern session range. As the brewery straddles the market between traditional and cfaft customers we have intriduced single hopped flavour forward beers to compliment our establised range, The current beers out in Spring were Amarillo 4.4% and Casablanca 5.4% ABV, with more delights to come in this summer.
