FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Welcome to the Autumn edition of Pub Mirror, my 33rd attempt to get it right, you never know one day I might succeed. Please look out in October for our CAMRA Cider month, where we try to promote pubs which sell real ciders and perries. There is a list of these pubs on our Pubs With page. If you know of any pubs selling real cider/perries please let us know so we can add them to our list. CAMRA will be holding a Mass Lobby Day in Westminster, London on Tuesday 30 October 2018. This will be our opportunity to bring
pressing campaign issues to the attention of up to 650 Members of Parliament (MP’s). The purpose of the lobby day will be to ask MP’s to commit to the following CAMRA campaigns: - Axing plans to increase beer duty in the upcoming Autumn Budget. (UK) - A permanent business rate relief for pubs in the upcoming Autumn Budget. (England) - An urgent review of the Pubs Code so that the Market Rent Only option becomes a genuine choice for tenants. (England and Wales) CAMRA members from this Branch are attending along with many others. We will let
you know how we get on. Finally may I say Good Luck to Hull City in the new season. For many years I have been writing the Amber Trail for this magazine and Tigers fan club magazine, but in this day and age there are apps for that, so there will not be any more unless it is really missed.

HULL PUBS UPDATE BY JON MAJOR Another great addition in the Old Town is Crown & Cushion (below) on Trinity House Lane, this is the old Trinity. It’s had a major refurb and has a classy retro style interior, they have also installed two handpulls to the bar which will feature rotating ales from various breweries.
Well where do I start for this quarter’s entry?? There has been so much going on in the city it’s a job keeping up. Many thanks to all those who have contacted me regarding changes to pubs, you’ve certainly kept me on my toes. It’s good to see one of my very first regular haunts back open which is the Windmill on Witham albeit only on weekends. I have not yet made it in so I cannot say for certain what is on the bar, but I intend making time soon. A new bar on the block is Tommy Coyle’s bar Barrow Boys on Hull’s up and coming area Fruit Market on Humber Street, a very classy bar indeed unfortunately it does not offer real ales (not that classy then).
It was renamed the Crown & Cushion in honour of one of Hull’s lost pubs, the original been on the corner of nearby Silver Street dating about 1823, then demolished in 1876 to make way for a bank. Shortly after, a neighbouring pub on Land of Green Ginger changed its name to Crown & Cushion, this eventually closed in 1927 (below) also to make way for a bank. I’m sure this will be third time lucky and it stays a pub and not a bank
Another bar/club that should be open by the time this edition hits the street is Warehouse 21 on the old site of Sharkey’s on George Street. This is going to be a sister venue to the wine and cocktail bar Service Station which is located on the corner of George Street, Warehouse 21 is going to be an over 21 venue with live entertainment, we will have to wait and see if it offers real ale. One place not to miss if you’re around the Old Town during the day is the new micro brewery Vittles and Company Brewing (below under old previous badged name) which is situated in Trinity Market. It offers a wide range of bottles of real ale from local, regional and national breweries as well as his own brews. You can also sit and chill at the bar and drink it whilst talking to Richard who is passionate about his ales. But, don’t forget to buy a few bottles to enjoy at home too.
It is so good to hear about local businesses doing well and expanding as well as supporting other local breweries. One such business is Shoot the Bull, this company, well known for its pop up street food took over the kitchen at Old House. Hull’s oldest domestic building in February 2016 eventually taking on the full lease of the pub in the December of the same year and hugely growing the business which Continued on Page 8 Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

Continued from Page 6 includes a very busy restaurant upstairs offering a variety of meals as well as their street food. Old House (below)has two hand pulls and several craft ales, which always includes a local ale.
The bar and food area of the theatre is open to the general public at all times the theatre is open whether a show is on or not and offers a full menu. Chris Harrison, managing director of Shoot the Bull said it’s important to support local breweries.
After a short period of closure I’m so glad to report that 1884 is to reopen under the name 1884 Marina Bar (above). The bar celebrated its opening on Friday 24th August. It is situated on the prime site of Dock Street, which is on the side of the Marina and is now one of Hull’s busiest areas. It still retains its very popular fine foods and you’ll be just as welcome if you only want a drink and to enjoy the regular live music. Unfortunately real ale is not available as yet.
They have since ventured out to a number of other outlets including a very popular market stall in Trinity Market, where there are two craft lager lines which you can enjoy in the newly refurbished seating area. Riverhouse their very popular coffee house is next door to Old House on Scale Lane and they have recently taken on the kitchen at the newly refurbished Crafty Little Brewery pub White Hart (below) which offer a good selection of real ales and craft ales.
Their latest venture is into theatre land having taken the lease on the bar and catering at Hull Truck Theatre. During the theatre’s shut down month during August Shoot the Bull and Hull Truck’s team have been hard at work changing the bar and menu. PUBS PRESERVATION SOCIETY In a recent press release CAMRA identified that, nationally, 18 pubs are closing every week across the country. As you can imagine our area is not immune from this devastating series of events. Having said that it was only following a conversation with the reporter from the Yorkshire Post who was writing an article on the Bosville Arms at Rudston that I decided to have a look at the state of things in the area.
Despite the change in legislation a couple of years ago that sought to protect pubs as Assets of Community Value the above shows quite clearly the difficulties being experienced by mainly small villages to retain the pub as the hub of their community. Having said that, it is not all doom and gloom as recent experiences have shown and the following examples show that there is hope for both rural and urban pubs.
While I may have reported on the following pubs separately over the past few years it is rather sobering (in more ways than one!) to see the actual pubs in the area that have been the subject of planning applications for various changes of use, mainly to residential, in the recent past. The following list details just some of the more recent closures and approvals: Barnes Wallis Inn, Howden - Change of use to residential - approved May 2018 New Inn,Tickton - Pub closed May 2018: New owner claims he will only reopen the pub if he gets permission to build 3 dwellings in the car park. Pack Horse, Hutton Cranswick - Change of use and part demolition to former dwelling approved June 2018 George & Dragon, Pollington - Erection of a dwelling and conversion of existing public house and residential accommodation - approved May 2018 Cross Keys Inn, Holme Upon Spalding Moor Conversion of existing pub to single dwelling and erection of three new dwelling - approved July 2018 George & Dragon, Holmpton - Change of use from public house to dwelling. Pending Consideration Bay Horse, Hull - Change of use to residential approved 2017 The Board Inn, Skipsea - Recently closed and now sold it is believed to a local developer who wishes to convert it to residential use The Ship, Langtoft - Pub closed and now up for sale for probable redevelopment Travelers Rest, Long Riston - Closed February 2018 Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
The Falling Stone, Thwing (above) – An application for change of use to residential was recently refused permission based on the fact that the application did not meet the requirements of the ERYC Planning Policy or the National Planning Policy Framework. The pub remains empty and the Parish Council are urgently trying to buy it to run as a community pub using funds from local residents and organisations such as the Plunkett Foundation which provides assistance in such cases.
Bosville Arms, Rudston (above) - The recent application to convert this pub, which has already been closed and standing empty for 4 years, to residential use was recently deferred by the planning sub-committee to allow the local

By the time this article appears in Pub Mirror there will have been an application to designate the pub as an Asset of Community Value and the Parish Council will have started looking into the possibility of acquiring funds to buy it.
and smoking ban have had an impact on rural pubs. While that may be true it is also a fact that most of these pubs are in well-established and populated villages where there are more than enough residents to keep it going along with outside and passing trade. The old adage – Use It Or Lose It – rings ever true and it is up to the local populations to support their local by visiting and using it for whatever purpose.
The Criterion, Hessle Road, Hull - An application to convert the pub to twelve flats was granted two years ago and plans were well under way to complete the work when a saviour came to the rescue. The pub has recently reopened and is now thriving again.
In closing I need to say that this will be my last article as Pubs Protection Officer for the time being as I have recently resigned from the post. I hope the above proves of some interest to those of you reading this magazine and that I have over the last couple of years or so informed, interested and to some extent educated you with my ramblings on pubs protection, ACVs and planning in general. It may be that I will return to the role in the future but until then farewell and thanks for reading.

HOLDERNESS PUBS UPDATE BY BRIAN JOHNSON The George and Dragon in Aldbrough has undergone a number of management changes. The latest newcomer is Rick who previously managed the Alexandra in Hornsea until it closed a few months ago
The number of pubs in the Holderness area is sadly on the decline. I have recently heard that planning permission is beimg sought to turn the George and Dragon in Holmpton into a house and the Board Inn in Skipsea is likely to be demolished to make way for residential development. The Alexandra in Hornsea is going to be turned into flats. The Holderness in Patrington and the Bay Horse in Arnold are both up for sale and there is still no news of the Traveler’s Rest at Long Riston which has been closed since before Christmas with no sign of anything happening to it
The Shakespeare Inn in Hedon now has new landlords, Matt Leach and Gerri Curran formerly of the Woolpack in Beverley. They are now the custodians of this very special pub which has been in several editions of the Good Beer Guide. I am delighted to report that the quality of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord remains as high as ever, if not better, served along side of a changing selection of other varying ales. Hornsea’s Stackhouse Bar have got planning permission to open a new micro pub in Bridlington this will be known as Stackhouse Bridlington. We wish Lucy and her staff every success in her new venture.
Pubs that have changed landlords recently are the Rose and Crown in Hornsea where Darren Read has taken over from Colleen and Andy Thorley but not sure if it’s a temporary or permanent appointment. The ale is still well kept and worth a visit between the other establishments
EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS UPDATE BY MARK BAINTON Market Weighton Londesborough Arms are holding their 3rd annual beer and music festival on 22nd September from noon until the beer runs out. 10 casks will be available along local butchers savoury pies and music from Crazy 'Orse.
Driffield The former Blue Bell at Riverhead has now re-opened as Miska’s. It is good to see this traditional pub has new life. The pubs hroughout the town had a boost over the weekend of 11th-12th August as the annual Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally was held at the showground.
Bridlington The Station Buffet Refreshment Rooms on the railway station is to go on sale, as John the licensee is to hang up his apron and retire. The Half Moon which is closed has a planning application to convert it in to a shop submitted to the council.
Beverley The Beverley Arms hotel along North Bar within has re-opened after an extensive refurbishment in the region of £6.5m. Thwaites ales are available along with some fine dining.
Sewerby Ship Inn is holding a vegetarian & vegan tasting event at the pub on 15th September.

REAL ALE IN HESSLE Hessle used to have little to attract real ale drinkers but thankfully that is no longer true. After a period of decline, the real ale scene in Hessle has greatly improved of late . Now, within a three minute walk from the Hessle Square bus terminus, you will find no fewer than four pubs offering a choice of of eight handpulled beers and two draught ciders/perries between them - and a browse around the outskirts of Hessle will take you to another four pubs offering eleven more cask ales.
Greene King IPA, occasionally partnered with another similarly standard beer, but now it has four active hand pumps dispensing three well kept, tasty real ales and a cider or perry. Alongside the standing Sharp’s Doom Bar are two changing real ales usually from Yorkshire breweries, including Great Yorkshire Brewing Co. (Cropton) and Great Newsome. The new landlady is keen on real ales, as can be seen from the new sign inside declaring ‘We Love Cask’.
In the Square itself are the Admiral and the Marquis of Granby, and a short stroll toward the church brings you to Harry’s Bar, around the corner from which is The Hase. Let’s start there and walk back.
A few doors down, on the corner of pedestrianised Prestongate, is The Admiral. Formerly known as the Admiral Hawke, it has re-emerged as a pub once more after a previous interlude as an Indian restaurant and is now owned by the Craft Union Pub Company. Amongst its multiple smoothflow fonts sits a solitary hand pump offering changing beers. When I visited it was Greene King’s ‘Bobby’ (a tribute to England’s 1966 World Cup-winning captain). So far we have not strayed beyond 175 yards from the bus stop in the Square, so let’s venture a little further afield. The Norland is within easy reach of the Square,
The Hase (Enterprise Inns) pictured above has improved greatly under its current licensee, who has been awarded Cask Marque, with a regular offering now of three hand-pulled beers, always in top condition, and often a draught cider. Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker is their standing beer, accompanied by two changing guest beers, which have recently included: Abbeydale Moonshine, Wye Valley HPA, amongst others. Just around the corner opposite the church hall is Harry’s Bar. A chalkboard outside this small and rather loud bar advertises ’Real Ales’ but they only have one hand pump amongst the serried ranks of smoothflow fonts.
10 minutes or so on foot along Hull Road, where you will find three cask ales from the larger breweries, such as Taylor’s Landlord, Wells’ Bombardier, Shepherd Neame Spitfire. Norland has the Cask Marque and opens at 9am seven days a week serving breakfasts if you are planning to make a day of it in Hessle. (NB. The EYMS 57 bus stops nearby on its way along Hull Road to and from the Square)
Cross the road a few yards along at the zebra crossing and you are outside the Marquis of Granby (Stonegate Pub Company) which has seen a remarkable transformation in 2018. For many years its only regular real ale was Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

BY BRIAN NELSON The independently-owned Country Park Inn nestles on the Humber foreshore beside the Humber Bridge and boasts a glorious view across the estuary. It is a good 25 to 30 minute walk from Hessle Square (see directions below). On a fine day your walk will reap a fine reward because there can be few more impressive pub vistas than the one across the Humber from the Country Park Inn patio or lawned drinking area, especially when accompanied by one of their three real ales: Sharp’s Doom Bar plus two changing ales including, on my last visit, something called Country Park EPA, which is not brewed on the premises but is bought in and sold by permission under the pub’s name (the afternoon staff did not know where it is from). Also a good half-hour walk from Hessle Square is a new addition to Hessle’s pub scene - the Wingfield Farm Carvery, situated on the main Humber Bridge roundabout at the top of Boothferry Road. It was newly built and open only a year ago and, as its name suggests, it is primarily a family-friendly dining venue but surprisingly it has three cask ales on offer. Two (Abbot Ale and IPA) are from Greene King, who own the place, but the third is always from a local brewery - usually Great Newsome, whose Elderflower Power was in fine fettle when I called in. If you have a designated driver, there is ample car parking, and it has a patio area, if you don’t mind watching traffic on a major roundabout.
From Hessle Square To The Norland - leave Hessle Square past the Co-op store and walk straight along Hull Road (about 10 minutes) To Country Park Inn - head towards the railway station, then take the nearby footbridge over the dual carriageway, turn right then first left down to the foreshore and walk along under the Humber Bridge. (half an hour level walk) To Wingfield Farm Carvery - go past the church and the Hase, turn right along Northgate, then left up Swanland Road to Boothferry Road, and head left to the top of the hill. (half an hour uphill walk) To Darley’s - keep going straight along Northgate/Beverley Road to Darley’s roundabout. (15 minutes walk)
A mile down hill from here, along Boothferry Road at Darley’s roundabout, is (you guessed it) Darley’s, which is part of Greene King’s Hungry Horse chain of food pubs/sports bars. I found nothing special here by way of real ale. Some years ago Darley’s used to sell four different real ales but now they only have Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen on hand pump, neither of which excite my taste buds. FOOD is served at the Hase, Granby, Norland, Darley’s, Wingfield Farm and Country Park Inn, and the Fish Net (five minutes walk from the Square on Hull Road )is a good fish & chip shop.

DIRECTIONS To Hessle • EYMS 57 and 66 buses from Hull stop in Hessle Square, as does the EYMS 80 from Beverley/Cottingham/Anlaby. • The Humber Flyer and Humber Fastcat buses from Hull to Barton-on-Humber stop along Boothferry Road near to Darley’s and Wingfield Farm • Hessle rail station is midway between Hessle Square and the Country Park Inn (about 15 minutes walk either way)
As you can see, a trip to Hessle in search of a good pint will not leave you disappointed. As is the case almost everywhere, some pubs are better than others for real ale, but there are plenty to choose from to justify an afternoon or evening in Hessle - or both, if you have the stamina. Who knows - with the high quality of some of the beer that is now on offer, could the day be coming soon when Hessle can once again boast an entry in the Good Beer Guide? What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

MEMBERS’ DISCOUNT SCHEME Details of local discounts for members are published in Pub Mirror, on the web site and in social media as well as at local events such as the Real Ale & Cider Festival. In addition the branch will endeavour to supply pubs which notify us that they are offering a discount with the necessary publicity materials in the form of posters and window stickers like the one on the opposite page. Feel like you could or would like to do more for CAMRA but don’t know where to start? CAMRA membership is about more than just discounts and Wetherspoons vouchers, nice as they are. Locally there is a small but dedicated band of people who make things work in terms of producing and publishing this magazine, updating the What Pub site, running the beer festival, organising social trips and the many other activities which help ensure CAMRA is represented in this area. Despite the fact that there are almost 1,300 members in the Hull & East Yorkshire branch the average attendance at open meetings is 25. Naturally this is very disappointing to those of us who are actively involved and while we know that not everyone can afford the time to carry out some of the official branch roles there are other ways to show that you care and want to do something to help support Real Ale & Cider in the area. Keep an eye on the branch diary published on the web site and in Pub Mirror and feel free to ask about what’s going on in the branch. You may feel that you could; • fill a role on the committee • take up one of the associate positions that may be vacant • come along on one of the social activities • be part of the survey trips that are conducted in order to assess beer quality for possible inclusion in future editions of the Good Beer Guide. You may have some great ideas about what we should do, how things could be improved, how to make members more involved or just know of a pub whose beer is so great it is worthy of consideration for the Guide. SAD NEWS - RIP BARRY LISTER I am sorry to inform our readers that the former Branch Chairman Barry Lister has died recently, following a long illness. Barry was Branch Chairman from December 1988 to January 1991.Our thoughts are with those who knew him. CAMRA’S YORKSHIRE PUB OF THE YEAR 2018 The George & Dragon in Hudswell, North Yorkshire, has been named ‘Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2018’ and is now celebrating a run of THREE consecutive wins after also taking the prestigious title in 2016, and 2017.
The Victorian Craft Beer Cafe in Halifax, was the other Joint Runner-up. The pub opened in 2014 and is owned and run by Simon & Pang Stather. The drinking area is on two levels and offers several seating spaces. Ten handpumps dispense eight real ales and two real ciders. CAMRA’s Yorkshire Regional Director, Kevin Keaveny, said “The result of this year’s competition shows that pubs situated in villages, former industrial areas, and town centres can all be recognised for the efforts made by enthusiastic and hard-working management and staff.” The eighteen entries for this year’s prestigious title were visited by individual members of a judging panel over a four month period. Each nomination was scored against strict criteria that included an emphasis on the Quality and Choice of Real Ale, Style/Decor, and Service and Value
The pub is located 3 miles west of Richmond, on the border of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. It is owned by Hudswell Community Pub Limited, which was formed in 2010 to buy, refurbish, and reopen the only pub in the village. It has achieved this and gone on to develop the pub as a hub for a wide range of activities and services. Stuart Miller has been running the pub since 28th July 2014.

A large beer terrace to the rear offers stunning panoramic views over the Swale Valley.” Wensleydale Falconer Session Bitter and either Northallerton Dark or Rudgate Ruby Mild are always available. Three regularly changing guest beers, sourced locally, are also always available. The Kelham Island Tavern in Sheffield was a Joint Runner-up in the competition. The pub was rescued from dereliction in 2002 and is run by Trevor Wraith and his team. Twelve handpumps dispense an impressive range of beers, always including a mild, a porter, and a stout.

CAMRA’S YORKSHIRE CLUB OF THE YEAR 2018 The Wortley Men’s Club in Wortley has been named ‘Yorkshire Club of the Year 2018’ and is now celebrating a run of FIVE consecutive wins after also taking the prestigious title in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Wortley is a village that is just over 8 miles away from Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The club is situated in the centre of the village at the back of the Wortley Arms public house. It is run by Nigel & Teresa Pickering, who said they were delighted to have won the competition for a fifth time. The club is described in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2018 as: “Set in the pretty rural village of Wortley, near Wortley Hall and gardens. The opulent building features exposed timber frames, ornate ceilings, wooden panelling and a real fire.” Timothy Taylor Landlord is on sale regularly, and two guest ales are obtained from local and national breweries. A changing real cider is always available. The club runs an annual beer festival in July.” CAMRA’s Yorkshire Regional Director, Kevin Keaveny, said “This fifth win in a row shows the club’s continued commitment to high standards. It also shows that a club in a village can thrive if the management offer the members the products, facilities, and level of service that they require.” The Oakworth Social Club in Oakworth was the Runner–up in the competition for the second successive year. The club is situated on Chapel
Lane, and is run by Dale Walsh & Louise Shimmin. They said that they were “really pleased to have done well in the competition again”. The club is described on CAMRA’s WhatPub online pub and club guide as “Friendly and welcoming, an imposing Victorian building on the main thoroughfare. Originally built as the Liberal Club in the late 19th century, it has a comfortable lounge style front bar, with another bar serving room at the back with traditional games and TV. There is a third upstairs bar and function room.” The twelve clubs nominated for this year’s prestigious title were visited by five judges over a three and a half month period. Each nomination was scored against strict criteria that included an emphasis on the Quality of Real Ale and the Temperature it was served at. Also considered were Atmosphere, Style/Decor, Service and Welcome, and Alignment with CAMRA’s Principles. JUNE SURVEY TRIP 9th June we venture out to the Wolds area of the branch to survey pubs for consideration to be entered into the Good Beer Guide.
along with a refurbishment - we finally can say we’re in the Wolds! The beer garden looks inviting to savour the first of the four choices on offer. Start with Theakstons Old Peculier, then Bradfields Farmers Blonde either John Smiths Cask or Theakstons Bitter to finish, I can’t quite decide. Also on the bar in the craft fonts was Theakstons Pale ale 4.5% not overly strong for a craft beer but it was so flavoursome jI just had to try it, well worth a look out for.
First on the list was at Dunswell, the Ship Inn (above) not quite the Wolds you say but it’s on the way. Previously shortlisted for Pub of the Year (village) it has four hand pumps offering a regular Greene King IPA and three guests which were at the time Sharps Sea Fury, Old Speckled Hen and Lounge Lizard from Nethergate brewery. A good start to the trip. After all sampling/tasting done it was time to head to our next pub. Bay Horse at Cherry Burton (below) has a connection with one of our branch members, our very own Hull Pubs Officer Jon Major. He was once the licensee here and he told me he was the one responsible for getting in three hand pulls to serve real ale at the pub. On these three today was Hobgoblin Gold, Ringwoods 49er and the other was being cleaned. Jon explained where the bands set up to entertain the locals, the christmas tree positioning and how much the pensioners and children enjoyed the xmas lunch parties.Time to go.....Jon’s getting teary eyed.
Goodmanham Arms (above) Pub of the Year winner (Village) was the next port of call. Peg Fyfe, No Notion, Ragged Robin are regularly at the bar, and brewed on site. Let’s have a look what guest beers were on; White Rat, Dizzy Blonde, Hambleton Stallion,Theakstons Old Peculier and ciders. We made it just in time to all get served as a large group of ramblers descended upon the pub from the Wolds Way. After a second half to try it was back on the coach to North Newbald. The Gnu and opposite, the Tiger, are next on our list. The group is halved so service is easier on the pub staff. The Gnu was serving a Youngs Best Bitter and Bradfield Farmers Blonde. Both these village pubs serve many walkers and cyclists all year round. They can’t be missed as both are located on the main road,so a ‘pub

The Tiger (below) opposite the Gnu (above) has a lower than average door height so it catches a few taller people out, even with a warning sign stating ‘’mind your head’’and today was no except within our group. There Mr A Taylor aka Tower Block, twice the door jamb stood firm against the softness of his head ‘ouch’. On at the bar was Tim Taylors LandlorBd, Wainwright ,Black Sheep Bitter and Bradfield Farmers Blonde, for the third time. If we could have stayed longer how many more times would Tower Block strike the frame?
The Half Moon prides itself with serving its home cooked food in its restaurant. Maybe another day i’ll get to try something from their menu, but today is about the beer they have on.Three hand pulls,Theakston Old Peculier ,Ossett Big Red and Black Sheep.What a way to end a trip with the mill’s sails casting a long shadow over the fields. Next the Barrel (top right) at Walkington is a traditional vilaage pub and similar to the Ship Inn at Dunswell as one of our finalists for the Pub of the Year along with the Ferguson Fawsitt Arms a few yards up the road which is also on the survey list. The Barrel has regular beers Thwaites Wainwright and Lancaster Bomber. The guest beer was from Ossett, Big Red. Amber/red colour,smooth malty full bodied beer with and a chocolate hint finish to it. Old Rosie cider compliments the four pumps.

THIRD ANNUAL PUB OLYMPICS Thursday 26th July was a hot and sunny day, a great day for our CAMRA Pub Olympics at the City Hotel. The scene was set for another epic battle on the Dart board, Dominoes table, Pool table, Skittles rack and the dreaded Shove ha’penny, all followed by a Quiz and raffle. Neil the landlord did us proud laying on Holderness Dark and Frothingham Best, to complement the Bellhaven 80 Shilling already on the bar where Avril (below left, with Jude centre and Carol right) served everyone with a smile. Mine was a water with lemon and ice as I hade to keep a clear head.
Darts was organised by Ken. Phil Jackets and Jude played each other, both pub darts team members, it wasn’t a fix honest. Using a trebles board single leg 401, after a number of close matches it was Michelle (Fiona’s mum) in the final with Jace (below left), girl power, Michelle(below right) won.
The skittles were organised by Brian. Once the board was completely assembled we only had 8 pins, but we had simple rules, 3 swings and the one with the most knocked down won. It was a three-way tie Kris, Phil and Ken. A toss of a coin to decide who played first and Phil won (Kris won last year).
We had Stuart from Bridlington (a CAMRA member) and Jude a pub regular who came for a night out and stayed and a couple who just wanted to join in the fun.
Carol organised the dominoes which was played as the best of three games, with eight players taking part and Colin Shores ended as the overall winner
Disaster we could not find the ball and chain for the Skittles. Kris said it was a ploy from CAMRA members to sabotage his chances of a repeat performance from last year. However, it was found, and the game was saved thanks to Jude. Fiona (below left) stepped up to organise the pool putting Ken and Eileen together both CAMRA members and man and wife. Eileen won, and the game of pool was under way. Stuart had to forfeit his place in the final as he had to catch his train. Jude played Fiona in the final which Jude duly won.
Shove ha’penny had Val and Gary Bennet as the unbiased adjudicators, 10 ha’penny’s each to shove up the board not touching the lines. Ken Smith (above) and Tony Garrett where tied on 12 apiece, so ofter another play off and despite Tony owning the board, Ken won. Brian Johnson set the quiz this year which was a more run of the mill general knowledge events. Answer sheets were sold and filled in over the whole of the night. Team Darts Phil

MEETING/SURVEY TRIP BRIDLINGTON BY ANGELA CAWTE In July we experimented with the format and content of both Branch Meetings and a survey trip by combining them. As such we began by organising an open meeting, providing transport so that all interested members who needed to travel could and Ken Smith very kindly scouted for a suitable venue, the Old Ship Inn in St John Street. Bridlington.
a mixed experience for some, but I can say that Theakstons Old Peculier was like nectar for me. (Anyone who knows me knows how much I rate anywhere with good OP). And then onwards to the town centre. We concluded by meeting up again at the Marine Bar, our branch’s current Town Pub of the Year. The pub is certainly living up to this accolade, as the beer there was amongst the best of that day. It would be unfair to focus on the pubs I visited, as I am aware that there are so many and fortunately the time we had was used well by everyone to visit a wide range of places. From the scorecards handed in the other pubs visited were: Prior John, Beaconsfield, Stirling Castle and Apollo
The idea of the day was to increase interest in Bridlington both to hi-light the pubs to members and to encourage Bridlington based members to engage with branch business. We appreciate that Bridlington can be too far for some to travel to our usual open meeting venues.
BEER SCORING My thanks go to those who went on the visit for heeded my request to score their beers on WhatPub. This is an on-line tool CAMRA use to build a data base on pubs in branch areas, in today’s world it is becoming more and more important that we use on line tools both for ease of use and keeping information up to date.
The meeting was conducted using a pared down agenda, and I tried to focus on matters which would be of interest to everyone. As the meeting ended we enjoy a further hour or so socialising, and a light buffet lunch, and then it was off to see what else is available.
We, the Committee are constantly having recommendations made to us for various reasons. We need to know though what more than one individual thinks of a place. All members can help with this by scoring their beer, I can assure anyone who may be hesitant that the data collected is used anonymously and is only ever used so we can evaluate the quality of beer in a specific venue.
Using our coach part of the group went to the High Street area; this includes the Board, Pack Horse and Queens. I chose not to visit any of these pubs myself, as I had been to all three relatively recently and preferred to see what other pubs had on offer. I was reassured by those who scored their beer that all three were up to the standard we hope to find.
In conclusion if you rate a place please tell us, and similarly do the same if you have the opposite experience. It could make the difference in your favourite pubs gaining the credit you believe they deserve or not!
I led the group to the Telegraph, I was interested to see how the place had changed in different hands and I am pleased to report that there were none where it matters and the beer was as good as ever. From here we proceeded on foot to the Fat Badger. This was Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

GBG SURVEY HORNSEA AREA BY BRIAN JOHNSON My trips are famous for something going wrong at the start even if it’s only the bus being late, however this time the bus was early unfortunately it couldn’t park outside Hull Truck so had to park on the other side of the road but after a bit of chasing about we eventually got started and after picking up two new members at Crooked Billet we went on to our first stop at Sproatley.

The pub had had to close completely on health and safety grounds because they had no water at all for toilet or washing facilities which is really unfortunate because it is now a really good pub compared to before Greene King and Linda took it over when I felt it was in danger of closing However, pubs in the town while the water pressure was low they were still serving ale and while I only intended to visit two pubs here because we had so much time I left people free to wander between pubs. New Inn was serving Threedom from the Black Sheep Brewery and Sanctuary pale ale from Cameron’s. Stackhouse Bar was serving Great Newsome Old Fergie, Ilkley Brewery Crossroads, Orkney Isle Dark Munro, and Small World Beers Twin Falls. Luciens serve three Wold top beers including Anglers Reward and Against the Grain
The Constable Arms (below) is a rather magnificent village pub which we have not visited in my time as pubs officer. Seems much bigger on the inside and also has a nice beer garden. On this occasion they were serving, Hobgoblin Gold, Marston’s Saddle Tank and Jennings Snecklifter.
At 6.45 it was time for the coach to leave for the last stop of the day the Blue Bell (below) at Old Ellerby.
Our next stop is another pub we have not visited in my time the Roos Arms in Roos another village pub that seems bigger on the inside. It has recently been bought by two couples from Leeds and their philosophy is to run it as a pub that serves food rather then a restaurant that serves ale. I feel that is how it used to feel on the few occasions I have been in previously. On this occasion they were serving Black Sheep Bitter, Brass Castle Northern Blonde and Kirkstall Brewery Pale Ale.
As Carol and I live in Hornsea we disembarked at the Tesco roundabout and made our way home thinking that was the end of our part in quite an eventful trip. Unfortunately I was just going up my garden path and my foot slipped off the edge and I lost my balance and smacked my chest in to a large ceramic planter result of which is I’ve cracked a rib which will slow me down for a few weeks but apart from that it was a very good trip which I think everyone enjoyed.
The third stop was the Cross Keys at Cowden when we first got an inkling of trouble ahead they were not serving food as they had no water fortunately at this point they were still serving ale and that day they had on Great Newsome Galivanting and Timothy Taylors Landlord. They are ‘Litmus’, a Raspberry and Lime Sour at 3.7%, ‘Fission’, an Orange and Chilli IPA at 6.5%, and ‘Oblivion’, a Raspberry Milk Stout at 9.0%. Their new range of t shirts, also made available for the first time at that event, also proved really popular. Visitors to Hull Sesh over the early August Bank Holiday weekend will have been able to enjoy an a 4.2% Session IPA brewed specially. The event sold through 150 kegs in record time and ran out of Atom’s beer in the early evening. Having been proud sponsors of the Dead Bod stage there, feedback was really good and they will be looking to extend the partnership going forward. Also, we have seen the release of ‘Resonance’, a 6.0 % Mosaic IPA, at Atom Bar alongside the first beer from their new signature experimental series by brewer Jamie Gibson. These will be limited to at most 50 to 60 litres per brew and will showcase Jamies wild side with flavours. Finally, Atom are introducing a unique beer for the upcoming British Science Festival, one of the worlds biggest science festivals, this year at Hull University’s Campus from 11 to 14 September. Atom will be hosting a couple at the bar, alongside being one of the sponsors of the Festival where a whole host of free events will be worth attending.

Moe (or Mosaic –named after the hop used in the beer) is brewed more often than others ales and is virtually a permanent ale. As well as this beer, they have brewed Black Jack - a vegan liquorice porter, a hand-pulled German style lager, Seafret, a light hoppy ale, and a blonde beer in honour of Amy Johnson called Pilot’s Pride. It might be worth mentioning that the in June/July with the weather having been so crazy, they had some trouble with cooling at the storage unit. Those casks were recalled but it did effect several casks of ale locally.

The farm-based brewery’s Frothingham Best bitter was awarded Gold in the Bitters up to 4.5 abv category, and Liquorice Lads Stout won Bronze in the Flavoured Stouts category. Both beers have been winners in previous years, but this is the first time both have won together. Matthew Hodgson, managing director, said it was a day to feel proud of the achievements. “We are celebrating here at South Frodingham. BREWERY NEWS tests and was awarded a silver medal in the Speciality Beer Category, whilst its blonde beer, Wold Gold won a bronze medal in the Ale Category. The medals are the latest in a long line of award wins for the brewery, now in its fifteenth year, as demand for its beer increases both at home and increasingly abroad. Alex Balchin, Wold Top’s Brewery Manager said that they were delighted with the awards: “Gaining recognition from the International Beer Challenge for the quality of our beers is a real compliment and an amazing achievement, especially as there are so many new and exciting products coming out of the beer world.”. Against the Grain, 4.5% ABV, is made from lager malt, maize, hops and yeast and is a premium full flavoured bitter beer with a good creamy head, refreshing bitterness and citrus aftertaste. It also won a silver award in the Premium Bitters & Pale Ales 4.5% to 4.9% category at the SIBA regional keg awards 2017. Wold Gold, 4.8%, is a mix of Wold grown Barley, Wheat and Cara malt hopped with Goldings and Styrian hops that give it a soft, fruity flavour with a hint of spice. It also won best in show at this year’s London Beer Competition. The International Beer Challenge aims to reward and promote excellent beers from around the globe providing brewers with a platform to express their beers. Industry leading experts on the judging panel included beer writer Jeff Evans and a range of expert judges including former brewers, beer buyers, independent beer retailers, writers and broadcasters.
