FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Welcome to our winter edition of Pub Mirror. Doesn’t time fly when you are enjoying yourself or is it just my age .... don’t even try...... There are many changes ongoing in the brewery and pub trade at the moment. Hopefully we have managed to get most of these to you in our pub updates and brewery news. It is good to see the ongoing development of the Marina/Fruit Market area of Hull. This goes to prove what a good job was done by the City of Culture team and the ongoing legacy it has left. Let’s hope this good work continues and takes in the other parts of our regionHolderness and East Yorkshire
in particular. As mentioned in the previous edition CAMRA held a mass rally where hundreds of our members descended on Westminster to send a message to MP’s about the very serious threats facing pubs and the industry. A full report is elsewhere in this edition. It will be interesting to see what happens next. Please get behind this inititive as best you can. We are nearing our Annual meeting where members can get more involved either by attending the meeting and or volunteering for officer and associated posts. Further details will be sent to members

HULL PUBS UPDATE BY JON MAJOR Well as this year draws to an end I’m sat here thinking where the heck it has gone. So much has gone on in the Hull pub scene and this quarter hasn’t been any different.
feel to it and still includes four rotating real ales and has added a craft lager to the bar and of course still includes its trademark homemade chillis.
The Polar Bear on Spring Bank is undergoing an extension to its bar area. This will give room for another seating booth and for a purpose built stage area under the iconic roof dome, and create more capacity for its very popular ‘sesh’ nights. Polar Bear is home to a very highly decorative and listed ceramic bar (picture below)
One bar which has changed venue is the fairly new Barrow Boys, they have moved home from Humber Street to a larger premises on Dock Street opposite the Marina which is the 1884 building. I recently visited a little gem of a shop in the Paragon Arcade, this arcade in itself is a beautiful place which many people walk through but not many notice the quality shops in there. One is the 80 Days Bier Market a true beer lovers paradise offering a huge selection of bottled and canned beers from around the world specialising in Belgian beers. A must visit if around the centre of Hull. They have introduced an open evening in the arcade along with the other shops on the first Saturday of the month where you can sit outside the bier shop and try the bottles on offer whilst browsing the other shops. The owners Karla and Andrew Murphy are passionate about what they do also have 80 Days Bier Haus on Princes Avenue.

Two very exciting changes in our area this quarter is the change of management at Hull’s oldest licensed premises and the forthcoming Taphouse Brewpub. Details of both can be read in separate articles further on. I have to end this report in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year and to all the pub managers and staff a massive thank you to you all for your hospitality this year and may your Christmas season be busy and safe.
Unfortunately on a down note two of our pubs have closed this quarter these are New Clarence on Charles Street and Albion on Caroline Street, hopefully it won’t be too long until these have new owners and open once more.
Many congratulations to all that have earned their place in the 2019 Good Beer Guide, I know there are many that just missed out but unfortunately we only have so many entries we can include with a huge amount of eligible pubs.

BRIDLINGTON The Londesborough Hotel is being demolished after fire ripped through the building in October. Funny Onion is now closed until February 2019 New Inn, Prince Street now has 2 hand pumps
Woolpack Inn - following the recent departure of its landlord Terry, the Woolpack now opens all day from 11am (4pm Mon) serving traditional pub food. Paul Clarke, the new licensee, having returned to the trade after a 20 year break, has already brought the pub back to life. Cornerhouse - The twelve handpumps on the bar have been reduced to eight, hopefully to improve the beer quality.
Half Moon (above) refurbishment is going well and the shop half of the refurb is almost ready. The Rustic Bar in Queens Street had no real ale at present
Monks Walk (below) - has new hand-painted signage, and very smart too. Beers from Beverley’s Twisted Angel Brewery have featured recently.
The new Stackhouse is scheduled to be open by Christmas. There are rumours of two new micro-pubs opening in the old TSB and Collins’ shop in town. The refurbishment of the Wetherspoons Prior John is on hold as there are some legal issues to be resolved HESSLE The Hase pub has been accredited again with the Cask Marque. HOWDEN The White Horse has closed and has a solicitor’s practise working from there.
Again in Beverley it is believed that a new micro-pub is opening near to the old Lincoln Arms Windmill Inn - Theakston’s Old Peculier is a regular beer at this traditional pub on Lairgate

HOLDERNESS PUBS UPDATE The Board Inn in Skipsea, has reopened, apparently the owner of the Funny Onion in Bridlington has bought it from the developer and will be selling real ale. Early reports are that a lot of the old regulars have returned, which is nice to know. The pubs kitchens have also reopened and are now serving food.

The Sun Inn in Skirlaugh has closed and is going to be changed into a children’s nursery (we do not expect it to have any real ale on) The Old Boat Shed in Withernsea has been sold as Rick has decided to retire. The new owners are keen on cask ale but have no experience in running a pub and as far we know are only opening Thursday to Sunday at present. The Victoria in Hornsea no longer sells real ale.
Kings Head, Hedon is now under a new licensee as is the Falcon Inn at Withernwick we wish them all the best.
Hornsea Bowls club is installing another hand pump, not sure what they will be selling yet apart from Old Speckled Hen.

Other news: 1. - The Bosville Arms at Rudston is the latest pub in our area to be designated an Asset of Community Value (ACV). This follows a spirited fight by the local residents which saw a recent application to convert it to residential use refused by the ERYC planning committee. The residents are currently actively pursuing the possibility of acquiring the pub to operate as a community facility. 2. - The Kingston Tavern, Paragon Street, Hull: The premises have recently been made safe and the front refurbished by Hull City Council under a little used provision of the Town and Country Planning Act. The cost of the work will be recovered from the owners. 3. - George & Dragon, Holmpton: The pub which closed in December 2017 was the subject of an application to convert it to a residential use but following a concerted effort by a local CAMRA member garnering support from local residents the application was refused at a meeting of the ERYC planning committee on 5 November 2018.

CHANGES AT YE OLDE BLACK BOY BY JOHN MAJOR It’s all change at Hull’s oldest licensed premises, the historic icon of High Street that is Ye Olde Black Boy. As we say farewell to Adam Scruton, who has been licensee for 10 years and proved himself a very popular and competent custodian, it is a great time to look back on the building’s history and wish Adam well in all his future ventures.
in use as a licensed premises was in 1792 when James Hayes was the victualler. A year later there was an auction at the pub to sell a brewer’s dray. Brewers bought the pub at the turn of the 18th/19th century. By 1829 the Black Boy was advertised as a free house, which probably only meant it had passed from a brewer to a wine & spirit merchant. Fast forward to 1926 and the front office was converted into a smoke room and a serving bar was added to the rear room, previously there were only serving hatches. After the conversion the bar was renamed to ‘ye old Black Boy’.
To list the full history would take up all the pages of this edition so we’ll go for a very potted history The site of the Black Boy (but not the pub itself) can be dated back to 1336 when a Richard Taverner came into possession of a Tenement named Gastryk House.
It is difficult to date the Black Boy correctly as its shape has probably not altered from when Gastryk House was demolished and divided up. There are reused medieval bricks in the passageway and 18th or 17th century bricks in the walls.
The first reference to licensed premises on the site is in 1729 when William Smith, victualler, and his wife Mary, purchased a garden at the rear of their house. Mr. Smith built a dividing wall on the north side and erected a Brewhouse on the site (the garden was to the rear of 149 High Street). The previous owner Hannah Fletcher sold the house to Mr Smith and the dimensions were listed as 42 feet 10 inches long and 18 feet 4 inches wide, which is roughly the same as the present Black Boy.
The new licensees are Alan Barnes & Kim McGivern, who you may know as licensees of Hull’s Pub of the Year 2017 the George Hotel, they are taking it on temporarily until February 2019 but plan on signing for it permanently after that. They will become the 50th known licensees (there are no listings between 18611888).
The name of the pub first appears in 1748 when a deed involving, William Hayton, baker mentions the Black Boy to the south of his land, which was the property of the heirs of William Smith deceased.
Alan said they are excited about taking on such an iconic pub and are looking forward to building on its current success. We wish them well on this venture and I for one look forward to their hospitality.

The pub was designated a Tetley Heritage Inn in 1981, however, Pubmaster, a new company set up in response to the larger breweries having to shed licensed premises bought the pub in 1992. It was later bought by the Century Inns chain, which was then acquired by Enterprise Inns who still own the property.

The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits • Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity • Local brewers who gain from increased sales • The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally • The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution • Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different. Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle.

What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

MEMBERS’ DISCOUNT SCHEME Details of local discounts for members are published in Pub Mirror, on the web site and in social media as well as at local events such as the Real Ale & Cider Festival. In addition the branch will endeavour to supply pubs which notify us that they are offering a discount with the necessary publicity materials in the form of posters and window stickers like the one on the opposite page. Feel like you could or would like to do more for CAMRA but don’t know where to start? CAMRA membership is about more than just discounts and Wetherspoons vouchers, nice as they are. Locally there is a small but dedicated band of people who make things work in terms of producing and publishing this magazine, updating the What Pub site, running the beer festival, organising social trips and the many other activities which help ensure CAMRA is represented in this area. Despite the fact that there are almost 1,300 members in the Hull & East Yorkshire branch the average attendance at open meetings is 25. Naturally this is very disappointing to those of us who are actively involved and while we know that not everyone can afford the time to carry out some of the official branch roles there are other ways to show that you care and want to do something to help support Real Ale & Cider in the area. Keep an eye on the branch diary published on the web site and in Pub Mirror and feel free to ask about what’s going on in the branch. You may feel that you could; • fill a role on the committee • take up one of the associate positions that may be vacant • come along on one of the social activities • be part of the survey trips that are conducted in order to assess beer quality for possible inclusion in future editions of the Good Beer Guide. You may have some great ideas about what we should do, how things could be improved, how to make members more involved or just know of a pub whose beer is so great it is worthy of consideration for the Guide. CAMRA MEMBERS LOBBY OF WESTMINSTER Hundreds of CAMRA members descended on Westminster last week to send a message to MPs about the very serious threats facing pubs.

"The Lobby Day has been a huge success. It gave members an opportunity to speak to their MPs direct about tackling the root causes of pub closures, need for fundamental reform to ensure that pubs remain at the heart of communities and continue to make a valuable contribution to our society, culture and economy."
The Lobby Day saw the launch of CAMRA's three point plan to save the Great British pub, and encouraged MPs to commit to. 1. Introducing a preferential rate of duty for draught beer.
Speaking at the Members' Rally, Mike Wood MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group added: "We need to make sure that we have a proper review of local business taxation which goes beyond what was announced (in the Budget) on business rates, so that pubs of all sizes are actually taxed at a fair rate and we have a taxation system fit for the 21st century rather than the 1950s, and one that recognises the economy as it is now rather than one that was based solely on land values."
2. Reforming the business rates system to address the unfair burden on pubs. 3. Conducting an urgent review of the Pubs Code so that the Market Rent Only option becomes a genuine choice for tenants. CAMRA members held meetings with MPs throughout the day, which culminated in a rally with speeches from the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, Mike Wood MP, as well as Ruth Smeeth MP and Alan Brown MP. The Lobby came the day after the Budget, which contained the very welcome decision to freeze duty on beer and cider, and the announcement of a new package of business rate relief that will help smaller pubs. While this change will see annual savings of up to £8,000 for some pubs, CAMRA is extremely disappointed that pub-specific rate relief has been scrapped, meaning that pubs with a rateable value of over £51,000 will lose out. Many of these pubs saw the largest rates increases after the last revaluation, and are struggling under sky-high bills that threaten them with extinction.

A63 GBG SURVEY REPORT FROM MARK BAINTON We are to head off down the A63 and visit the villages along the way. Hope and Anchor on the banks of the River Ouse at Blacktoft is our first port of call. We get to sample Courage Directors, Pennine brewing Co. Amber Necker, Lincolnshire Craft Beers Melton Mild, Marston’s Pedigree and Ringwood’s Boon Doggle. We follow on from the Hope and Anchor and in to the Black Swan (below) at Eastrington. Here was a new beer to most of the party, Blonde by Beer Monkey Brewing Co. from Skipton,the other beer was Theakstons Old Peculier.
The White Hart in North Cave is the next pub and opens at 4pm. As some of the group found the chippie next door had just opened and it’s best not to rush the landlord we divide and then consume or was it conquer? On the bar we have Theakstons Best, Adnams Southwold Bitter, Wold Top Big Sky and Great Newsome Elderflower Power. Soon the other half start to amble back in and some disappear to the chippie - result everyone’s happy. Time to move on and South Cave’s Fox and Coney beckons. A large selection to choose from as we enter. Yorkshire Brewhouse YPA and Great Newsome’s Sleck Dust and Frothingham Best catches my eye to start with. I’ve already had a half of Theakstons Best and Wold Top Wold Gold so all what was left to try was Crafty Little’s ChamALEon.
Ringwood’s Boon Doggle were on offer. Here you can ask for a ‘paddle’ of thirds so Ken takes the challenge. I would like more pubs to venture into these then you can try more beer but with out the volume. As we are in Brough we head out to the new kid on the block, The Centurion Arms. It’s classed as a micro pub due to its size. The pub is another first time for some and all really enjoyed themselves. The ales available were Shrimps and Barbies, an Aussie pale ale from Wilde Child Brewery a single hop pale ale from Barnsley’s Outhouse brewery named Ged, Bridge Bitter from Burton Bridge Brewery.
Across the A63 is Welton and the Green Dragon pub. A former 17th Century coaching house now a traditional pub with rooms (a 21st coaching house perhaps?) is our last one to survey. Marston’s beers are on show. There was Jennings Cumberland & Cocker Hoop, Thwaites Wainwright and Wychwood’s Hobgoblin Ruby Halloween special. I’m wondering if anyone takes up the hospitality and books a room as a few have started to ‘flag’? No is the answer as we all get back to the Interchange. Another trip done. I would like to thank all the publicans for a great day and Acklams coaches for driving us around safely.

Hallgate Tavern (above) was a great surprise to me as I’ve never been in and I was pleasantly surprised with a good array of hand pulled beers on sale. More people joined the group and we ended up with twenty five dispersed around Cottingham. We had a bit of a competition on who took the best photo with a bottle of beer as the prize. We crossed each other on the street and gave the low down on where they had been,
We were all smiling and having a good time together. From there we went to Hugh FitzBaldric a new micro pub on Hallgate with several hand pumps on. The beer the laughs and good feelings all round lasted all day. Cottingham even put the flags out for us.
The Fair Maid (top right) is a pleasant place to eat and drink as is the Blue Bell both have good beer, and good food.

KWVR BEER FESTIVAL SOCIAL TRIP BY ANGELA CAWTE For some years the branch has run a trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway to enjoy the annual beer festival. We travel by coach to Keighley from where those who wish to, catch the next steam train out of town to the Festival. For the others the coach carries on to Oxenhope where the main engine sheds are and the location of the main festival.

The opportunity to visit Haworth, to drink at the Black Bull, home to excellent Theakston’s ales and the Fleece (below) a Timothy Taylor’s pub was taken. It was a shame there was no time to linger so onward to Keighley. The steep hill to Haworth’s historic centre was much easier on the return to the station
For the 2018 event there were two bars at Keighley with opportunities to get a beer for the journey. At Ingrow which houses ‘Rail Story’ a permanent collection of artefacts to help tell the story of railway preservation there were bars from several local breweries. Including a personal favorite when in the area - Old Spot at Cullingworth.
We were fortunate that the train taking us back to Keighley had Kirkstall’s Brewery Bar on board. Excuses for a further pint don’t come much better than that! Of course we took full advantage,,,, The meeting point to return was the Boltmakers In Keighley (below) the pub seems to get smaller every time I visit but I think that is down to its popularity and the vast numbers that go there. It was a fabulous place to end a great day and I can say with confidence that we were spoilt by the choice and quality available everywhere

MALTON SOCIAL TRIP FROM CAROL JOHNSON We started out with a full coach of twenty eight and set off in warm weather and good spirits. With a raffle and quiz mostly out of the Pub Mirror and local knowledge. We had a great run through and got there in record time, fifteen minutes early. So I went into the Brass Castle Brewery and they opened the Tap Room (below) doors for us, so we could sample the beer, Bad Kitty and Sunshine.
We all went through to the brewery and had a very entertaining talk from Phil the head brewer, where he let three of our group go up the ladder and put hops into the large vat. It was Charles Trafford’s brother in-law Andy’s birthday, later on in the tap room he was presented with a 2 pint crowler. He chose Sunshine they canned it on the premises. He said he will remember it for a long time. Some went around Malton Market and visited the other pubs in Malton, of which there were many including the Spotted Cow (below) and around the Market Place in the centre of Malton. We all managed to get on the coach very quickly as we held up the traffic on the main street.
On to Pickering the coach dropped us off half way up the hill on the main street and everyone went their own way. The Sun Inn (below) had a mini festival on so some partook of that and all the other pubs had a fair smattering of our party. One or two went to the North Yorks Moors Railway but sadly saw no train.
We all met on the high street where the coach held up the traffic in the street while we all piled on. We had the answers to the just for fun quiz which Ken Smith won. One of the answers was Sunshine Beer by Brass Castle so we had ‘Bring me Sunshine’ verse and chorus all the way to Wetwang.
At the Black Swan - a great pub with pleasant host and staff and great beer, and the fish and chip shop next door did very well out of us. The Victoria Inn is just down the street of a very pretty village with a duck pond. Even the weather stayed with us all day. A grand day out as Wallace and Gromit would say. TAPHOUSE BREWPUB BY JON MAJOR On a recent visit to find out how the work is going on for this new and exciting project of the new Taphouse Brewpub I met up with Guy Falkingham from Yorkshire brewery, he took me round the site and explained all about his vision for this much needed addition to Humber Street. Guy is in partnership with Lee Kirman from the Minerva on the Marina and between them promise to deliver a truly great bar.
At the end of the bar there will be full length windows showcasing great tanks in this working brewery so you can sit and enjoy your ale whilst watching the next brew taking place. Guy has been brewing as the Yorkshire Brewing Company on these premises for six years and has always had visions of extending through to create a Taphouse, after talking to Lee about his vision for over a year they decided to go into partnership and their plans are now well under way and they expect to open before Christmas. As well as great ales this venue will also offer a great variety of food with meals being served mid week and at weekends a changing offer of street food will be available. As if that isn’t enough you will be regularly entertained with music and spoken word, with the emphasis being on local talent.Organised Brewery tours and tasting sessions will also be offered.

On entering the venue you will be greeted by a 9 metre long bar which will have up to 40 craft and cask ales and 12 real ciders, not only from the in house brewery but also from other local, national and international breweries, a wide selection of bottled and cans will also be available. (The former fruit and veg warehouse which is being converted into Taphouse Brewpub. A total of almost £300,000 is being invested to breathe new life into the building and fit out the venue.)
Humber Street has been one of Hull’s major economic areas for over 200 years and the centre of the North’s fruit and vegetable distribution market until 2009. In recent years it has seen a huge regeneration project taking place and is well under way of becoming a destination for art and culture. I can see The Taphouse Brewpub leading the way to this up and coming ‘go to’ area of Hull. Further update on page 45.

They are ‘Litmus’, a Raspberry and Lime Sour at 3.7%, ‘Fission’, an Orange and Chilli IPA at 6.5%, and ‘Oblivion’, a Raspberry Milk Stout at 9.0%. Their new range of t shirts, also made available for the first time at that event, also proved really popular. Visitors to Hull Sesh over the early August Bank Holiday weekend will have been able to enjoy a 4.2% Session IPA brewed specially. The event sold through 150 kegs in record time and ran out of Atom’s beer in the early evening. Having been proud sponsors of the Dead Bod stage there, feedback was really good and they will be looking to extend the partnership going forward. Also, we have seen the release of ‘Resonance’, a 6.0 % Mosaic IPA, at Atom Bar alongside the first beer from their new signature experimental series by brewer Jamie Gibson. These will be limited to at most 50 to 60 litres per brew and will showcase Jamies wild side with flavours. Finally, Atom introduced a unique beer for the British Science Festival, one of the worlds biggest science festivals held this year at Hull University’s Campus in September. As well as being one of the sponsors of the Festival, Atom hosted a couple of events at the bar as part of the well received other free events at the event.

Pack Horse 7 Market Pl, Bridlington YO16 4QJ Regular Beers: Quay Gold (ABV 4.2%), BLO - Tony Garrett Over the last 3 months the Rob and Helen have continued brewing a variety of beers, keeping Bridlington Brewery consistently on the bar of the Pack Horse. Although Moe (or Mosaic –named after the hop used in the beer) looked like it may have become a permanent ale, it has recently been just one of a number of ales that have left the brewery to slake many drinkers’ thirsts. Black Jack - a vegan liquorice porter has made a further appearance; Copper Horse, a 3 hop beer with a copper hue; a beer based on the old 80 shillings ale, called Farries; and a light beer based on Mosaic and Amarillo hops (the name is yet to be decided at the time of writing. They are still working on opening a micro-pub in the old Half Moon Premises, although half of the premises is soon due to house a shop.

Another pale ale first showcased at April’s Real Ale Festival at Hull Minster, called ‘Jester’ after the name of the hop used exclusively in it. It will also be available in bottle and pin for the Christmas trade as another session ale.”

BREWERY NEWS Bottles at 330ml (all sealed and labelled by hand) have proved extremely popular, and Crafty Little Brewery is currently completely sold out. Another session is planned shortly for their Red Tale, Wolfbite, Perky Porter, Black Ryeno and ChamAleon brands, with an estimated production of 750 bottles a day to be made available. In addition to the introduction of Apex Predator as a session ale in the last few months, initially sold via their own outlet, White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street in Hull, they have just launched Silk Stout at 4.5%, already a favourite with arachnophiles as the bar clip features a great big hairy spider, and Snake Charmer, an unfiltered Vermont style IPA at 5.5% with added lactose for extra flavour. With plans to expand into South Yorkshire and Derbyshire the brewery is currently looking to take on a part time sales rep with experience of that region’s wholesale licensed trade.

The brewery are using it to help raise awareness of depression. It is amazing how many people have dark moments in their lives and are affected by depression.

Similar malt menu but this time two hops instead of one which is going down well. Staying with English hops though. With Brexit coming, every little helps.
