HULL & EAST YORKSHIRE CAMRA PUBs OF THE YEAR 2012 Congratulations to the following pubs on their success in our branch Pub of the Year awards for 2012. As in previous years there were plenty to choose from with over 70 pubs receiving nominations for these prestigious awards. The winner of CAMRA’s Kingston upon Hull Pub of the Year 2012 is the Wellington Inn, who make it a double success as they were also voted joint winner of our Cider Pub of the Year 2012. Runner up in this section was Ye Olde Black Boy. Our East Yorkshire Town Pub of the Year 2012 winner is the Green Dragon in Beverley and runner up was Marine Bar in Bridlington. The winner of our East Yorkshire Village Pub of the Year for 2012 is the Goodmanham Arms in Goodmanham and the runner up in this section was The Railway in Cottingham. EDITORS COMMENTS by Bernie Cawte It’s that time of year when the Branch turns it’s attention to our annual Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival, which this year celebrates its 35th festival. What a long way we have come it that time, this year’s festival will have over 100 real ales and 25 ciders and 16 different bottled beers on offer. After last year’s too successful festival when we ran out of beer, we have increased the beers on offer by 50%. We are using a theme of local ales with selections from local brewers and regional breweries. We hope to see you there, keep up to date by visiting our branch web site and festival blog for the latest details. At the beginning of February we carried out our Pub of the Year 2012 presentations with trips to the Town and Village award winners. Congratulations to the winners Green Dragon, Beverley and Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham and to the runners up The Marine Bar, Bridlington and Railway Hotel, Cottingham. Presentation of the Hull award winners also took place early in February report to follow in our next edition. So congratulations to the winner The Wellington Inn & Brewery and the runner the Olde Black Boy. This year’s standards were very high so it’s well done to all concerned. If you have not seen it yet the Branch web site now includes a branch calendar which we hope will make it easy for members and non-members to see what is going on in the branch area. Not only does it have the branch meetings, trips and events, it also has non CAMRA local events,

HULL PUB NEWS by Jill Walker Hello and a Happy New Year to you all. This edition of Hull Pub News has some good news with pubs being re-opened and I’m pleased to report the following: The Minerva after a short closure following the departure of the licensee Phil Daly has thankfully now been re-opened with Lee Kirman in charge. Lee tells us that the plan is to have Pilots Pride (new recipe), Marstons EPA, Hobgoblin, a Great Newsome product and Tetley cask. Home cooked food is now available with evening dining to follow in time. Pie night and Curry nights are planned and fresh fish and chips all day Fridays when they get into the swing of things. Also 2 old hand pulls will be repaired soon, giving 7 in total. The Olde Corn Exchange is another pub which re-opened shortly before Christmas. Licensee Adam Scruton also runs Ye Olde Black Boy in High Street. Corn Exchange has 10 hand pumps on the bar and has been tastefully decorated. Well worth popping in and a welcome addition to the old town real ale scene. Bar Exchange has now been re-opened by licensee Paul Crosskill who left The George, Land of Green Ginger for that purpose. Paul tells us that they have 7 real ales and 3 ciders available. This is another welcome addition to our old town pubs. The George is now under the management of Ann Hinds, we wish her the best. The Botanic, on Spring Bank is now refurbished and open with two hand pumps on the bar. However when I popped in on Christmas Eve they had no beer on. I’ve had a report from another member that they also found it lacking in cask ales when they popped in. The Tap on Spring Bank re-opened before Christmas but unfortunately has recently closed and is for sale freehold for £140,000+VAT. The Hole in the Wall on Spring Bank : despite difficult conditions, Wendy has run this noted cask ale pub for 9 years and still serves Abbeydale Moonshine [Hull’s only outlet] and Roosters or Summer Lightning. Well worth a visit. The Crown on Holderness Road has re-opened under new management. Mail Group - hullcamra@hullcamra.org.uk

Well that’s all the good news but I’m rather sad to report that The White Hart, Alfred Gelder Street closed on Friday 4th January. I haven’t been able to find out what the long term plan for the pub is. This is such a beautiful building and stunning bar, it’s a real shame someone cannot make a go of it. However licensee Sue Perkins also runs The Whittington and Cat and has had a hand pump installed there. They will be selling beers from Wold Top Brewery Pubs which don’t seem to be able to make a go of selling cask ales and are reported as having no cask on the bar when last visited are The Sandringham, The Wheelhouse and Raynors. If anyone knows of any others or indeed if any pubs have started selling cask where none was previously available, please inform us. Pubs which have closed since my last report are: The Fishbowl, Parkers and Masters Bar. The George, on the corner of Walton Street/Spring Bank West has been bought at auction but a planning application to turn it into a takeaway has been submitted. The triton inn Owners of a popular country pub, Paul and Anne Rusling have been devastated by a fire that has seen their new refurbishment work go up in smoke.

front-of-house is just blackened with smoke and soot damage Paul and Anne have now started redecorating the pub,but they are now counting the cost of fire and are unable to say when they will be able to reopen. The Triton Inn has been their life for six years."We took it from being closed in 2006 and rebuilt it internally from the floor up,"So it's very close to our hearts and something we take great pride in."

An electrical fault at The Triton Inn may be to blame for a blaze at the pub in Brantingham.The pub was closed for refurbishment when the blaze broke out in the restaurant, causing fire and smoke damage no one was in the pub when the fire broke out.

EAST YORKSHIRE PUB NEWS by Pete Mason & mark bainton To start this report, I would like to offer our congratulations to Phil and Avril Lowe. Three years after taking over as tenants of the Shakespeare Inn, Hedon, they have increased the quality of the ale and the atmosphere (both literally and figuratively) and have now received a national award from Punch Taverns for excellent service standards. The awards were judged by Cask Marque and involved checking the beer line cleaning standards, service standards and cellar quality. The Bay Horse, Arnold, re-opened at the end of October 2012. The pub was given a very sympathetic refurbishment by the new owners, to the tune of £250,000. There are three hand pumps dispensing John Smith's Cask, Morland Old Speckled Hen and Timothy Taylor's Landlord. John Robinson has been the tenant of the Travellers Rest, Long Riston, for just over a year. He is selling Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Wold Top Wold Gold together with a changing guest ale.

on the last time I called in. Barbara and Tony Ross have taken over as licensees of the Constable Arms, Sproatley. This is their first pub, and we wish them every success. Maggie Clarke finally took over as licensee of the Railway Hotel, Cottingham, on 9th December. She has been the manager there since leaving the Constable Arms, Sproatley, in 2011. Before that Maggie was the popular licensee in the King William IV in Cottingham. John Martin, took over as manager of the Victoria, Victoria Road, Beverley, in the middle of November. The Victoria, a Marston’s Heritage pub, sell Marston's Pedigree and a guest beer from the Marston's range. John was previously the manager of Greene King's Sherwood Manor in Nottingham, and has prior experience with Yates' chain of pubs. Report by Pete Mason

After being under a selection of temporary managers, the Sun Inn, Skirlaugh, was taken over by a new tenant in early November. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get there during opening hours to get more details, so watch this space for the next edition.

Triton Inn, Brantingham has had a fire which has caused extensive damage to the front part of the pub and at present the pub is temporarily closed. This is a shame as Paul and Anne had just put a third hand pull on dispensing Wold Top, Headland Red, see full story on previous page.

The Dacre Arms, Brandesburton, is selling Theakston's Old Peculier, John Smith's Cask and Black Sheep Bitter together with a regularly changing guest ale.

Crown and Anchor at Tickton, just outside Beverley, has a new landlady, she has a lot of plans for the place and hopes Marston's will back her all the way.

The Black Swan, also in Brandesburton, sells Mansfield Cask, Marston's Pedigree and a changing cask ale from the Marston's portfolio.

Monks Walk,Highgate in Beverley is now being converted to a French restaurant.

Withernsea Golf Club is selling Black Sheep Bitter and there are plans to install another hand pump in the spring.

Carpenters Arms in Market Weighton have had a 'Meet the Brewer Night’ on the 31st January and are planning similar events in the future. The guest brewer for the first night was the local brewery, Brass Castle.

Golden Sands Chalet Park is selling Hook Norton Hooky Bitter in the Clubhouse (open to non-residents).

POTY AWARD TRIP TOWNS AND VILLAGES BY ANGELA CAWTE

Once a year I have the very enjoyable duty to present Pub of the Year Certificates to publicans. They have achieved the best standards when visited by our volunteers who assess which pub provides the best overall experience. I have known some of these licensees longer than others, but the thing I enjoy most is the consistency of the pleasure in the voices of the winners when I telephone them with the news they have won. Similarly, I also organise the Presentation Trip, for 2012 the presentations to the winner and runners up in the Town and Village category were made on Sunday 3 February. As is usual we meet at Hull Truck Theatre in Ferensway where our coach picks us up. Members lucky enough to live on our route out of town avoid the very early start that some dedicated members have as they get picked up from bus stops on the way. The longest leg of the trip was the first to the Marine Bar on North Marine Drive, Bridlington, and our only sea view of the day. The Marine Bar is the runner up in the town category; this pub, a family run concern is part of the Expanse Hotel that has been open for more than 70 years, it has a separate identity and wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. The bar has been a regular entry in the Good Beer Guide for a number of years and proudly promotes this achievement.

I presented the certificate (above) to Natasha, Paul and Mac. My only regret is when we visit on these trips we always seem to have to leave too soon. They have 3 regular beers and vary the guests depending on the time of year, our party Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

was more than pleased with what we had to chose from.

From Bridlington we travelled to Goodmanham and the Goodmanham Arms, which under the

stewardship of Vito and Abbie Logozzi (above) has retained its status of the Village Pub of the Year. The pub has many charming features, particularly the open fires that were appreciated by us all. Abbie has also resumed brewing using a brewing plant left by a previous licensee so we were spoilt for choice from a varied range of ales from the in-house All Hallows Brewery, national and local independent breweries. Although the village of Goodmanham is no longer served regularly by public transport it is well worth the effort to visit. Abbie and Vito have achieved great things by making a village pub the hub of its community again and when so many villages are losing their pubs it is particularly pleasing to experience the opposite. POTY AWARD TRIP TOWNS AND VILLAGES BY ANGELA CAWTE The winner of Town Pub of the Year was next in Beverley and the Green Dragon, a Nicholson’s Pub, part of the Mitchells and Butler Group. The pub has been run for many years by husband and wife team Glyn and Alan Clarke (below).

Cottingham, runner-up in the Village category. Maggie has been part of the community in the village for some time and I know of several branch members who were more than happy when she returned to running a pub in Cottingham, after a break of 2 years. Maggie also had a selection of 7 real ales to choose from and 2 real ciders. The pub is tied to Enterprise and was substantially re-furbished when Maggie took over. All the members enjoyed the range of ales available to us on the day and the welcomes we received. They are all different yet consistent in the quality and choices they offer. It is so satisfying that we are able as a CAMRA branch to recognise 4 very different pubs overall as our best of the best (as well as the 2 Hull award winners).

Glyn is dedicated to the maintenance of her own very high standards, and has previously referred to the ale casks as her ‘babies’ when talking to me. She is also very proud of the meals she serves, and I had to arrange the presentation carefully, mindful that if our group of 26 had arrived earlier there would have been no room for us in the pub! I was given the responsibly of serving our group from a range of seven ales including a Hop Studio beer ordered in to mark the occasion, but I can confirm the bar staff have nothing to worry about! As with the other 2 pubs, we reluctantly had to leave to make the final presentation to Maggie Clark (below), the licensee of the Railway in

CAMRA welcomes Government plans for new “fair dealing” provision to end unfair practices in pub industry The Government has announced action on unfair large pub company leases to safeguard the future of many thousands of community pubs. This announcement is the culmination of years of campaigning by CAMRA and over 7600 people have lobbied their MP in the past year alone. Supporting CAMRA's campaign, Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “There is some real hardship in the pubs sector, with many pubs going to the wall as publicans struggling to survive on tiny margins. Some of this is due to pubcos exploiting and squeezing their publicans by unfair practices and a focus on short-term profits. Four Select Committee reviews since 2004 have highlighted these problems.... A change in the law is now needed to shift behaviour." CAMRA Chief Executive, Mike Benner said: “Over 3,500 tied public houses have been lost since the start of 2009. Many of these will have been lost as a result of excessive rents and by being forced to buy beer at up to 50% above market rates. The proposal for a “fair dealing” provision will allow publicans tied to large pub companies to challenge these high prices which means fewer valued pubs will be forced to close their doors.” “CAMRA fully endorses the Government’s wish to ensure that tied publicans are no worse off than free of tie publicans. Research shows that 46% of tied publicans earn less than £15,000 per year in contrast to 22% of free of tie publicans. Guest beer and free of tie options offered by pub companies with more than 500 pubs, long advocated by CAMRA, would be a straightforward means of levelling up the playing field."

Members of the Scottish Parliament, CAMRA volunteers, and brewers joined together in the wonderful setting of Holyrood to raise a toast to celebrate the Scottish beer industry and push forward our campaigns to save the pub. Real ale was enjoyed from Stewart Brewing, Fyne Ales and the ever popular Bitter & Twisted (4.2% ABV) from Harviestoun. There are now 57 breweries in Scotland. This diverse booming industry deserves greater recognition from the Government and CAMRA believes it should move towards the same status and national identity enjoyed by the whisky scene. Pubs however, in line with the rest of the UK, are struggling and Scotland has suffered a net loss of 110 pubs in the last year alone. CAMRA is campaigning for Scotland to follow Westminster's lead and appoint a Minister with responsibilty for pubs - someone to speak up for this unique British institution and provide a focus point for the diverse pressures contributing to the decline.

We have made a couple of changes to the admission and ticketing arrangements: Admission after 6pm on Thursday and Friday will be charged at £5 which includes your £1 refundable glass and a beer token to the value of £1.40. No advance tickets will be available this year. Admission is free at all other times and for card carrying CAMRA members throughout the festival.

Pub mirror for the archieves The Treasure House in Beverley who act as the archive service for the East Riding and also collect local history books and journals are wanting old Pub Mirrors for the archieves. They have some issues of 'Pub Mirror' in their journals collection. All of the journals are open to any of the public who might be interested in local history or old pubs and can be viewed in their reading room. They have collected some issues of the 'Pub Mirror' but have some gaps, which we are seeking to help them to fill and we are wondering if any of you might be able to help. The gaps they have are issues: 1-37, 40-46, 70, & 75 So if you have and would be prepared to donate them to the archives please contact the editor at pubmirror@hullcamra.org.uk. INN CIDER by David Litten CAMRA Pomona Award 2012 The Pomona Award is named after the Roman Goddess of apples, and is presented during October: CAMRA's Cider and Perry Month. Much consideration and deliberation goes into each entrant and it must be noted that the Pomona Award is not automatically awarded annually as it may be decided, after long discussion that no presentation will be made. In essence the Pomona Award is presented by CAMRA to the person, people, place or thing who has done the most to promote real cider or perry over the previous 12 months or for ongoing work to promote cider and perry. The 2012 Award was recently presented to Dr Andrew Lea at the Red Lion, Brightwell cum Sotwell, Oxfordshire, for his ‘wealth of knowledge, technical support and passion in contributing to the science and understanding of cider and perry production.

Dr Lea’s career started at the Long Ashton Research Centre, near Bristol, and fast forward to the present day, he remains one of the leading authorities in the science behind cider and perry making. Packed with a wealth of practical experience and understanding they include details about equipment, techniques, how to overcome problems and much more. Andrea Briers, Chairman of CAMRA’s Cider and Perry Committee, said: ‘I am delighted to be able to recognise Andrew Lea's work within the cider industry by presenting him with our Pomona Award. His unwavering support and help to new cider and perry producers has been invaluable.’

PROJECT VENUS The National Winter Ales Festival in Manchester this year gave brewsters (female brewers) an opportunity to show what they are doing. All 14 breweries from Project Venus were represented, including Metalman from Waterford in Ireland. Beers from Project Venus and their member brewsters, which were identified by a Venus post-it on their casks. Established in March 2011, Project Venus is a group of female brewers or brewsters who get together to pool their skills and ideas. It was inspired by the Pink Boots Society in American which aims to promote and further educate women in brewing and beer. Three of the Project Venus beers were collaborations involving at least half a dozen brewsters whilst the remaining eleven were from individual brewsters' breweries.

Saturday 20th January was a cold and bracingly windy morning and so the perfect time to travel out to Skidbrooke Cider farm in Lincolnshire and shout Waes Hael (be of good health) at some cider trees.

About 15 local CAMRA members did exactly that and after about 90 minutes of Morris dancing, frostbite and cider we took a warming trip around local pubs in and around Louth – including the excellent Gas Lamp Lounge – the brewery tap for Fulstow brewery. Same time next year!

HOT AUGUST NIGHT BY PETE MASON It was one of those sunny evenings as the summer peaks and turns to autumn. Do you remember the sun? That hot, yellow thing in the sky? Our intrepid crew was embarking on another survey trip, to the wilds of northern Holderness – ah, the sacrifices we have to make for the cause. The first stop was the Tiger Inn, in Beeford. The landlord, Roy Stamper, gave us a warm welcome as we sampled the John Smith's Cask Ale and Fuller’s London Pride in this pleasant country pub half-way between Hull and Bridlington. Suitably refreshed and fortified, we made our way eastward to Skipsea on the coast, to sample the delights of the Board Inn. Licensee Gary Carver was behind the bar, as most of the staff were going on a hen night for the head barmaid. Gary has been at the pub for eighteen years as I write this, and in the trade for nearly thirty eight years. On offer that night was Jennings’ Jogger's Tipple and Ringwood Three Sheets.

Yorkshire beer – York Red Hot night we visited – they have also incorporated a village shop into the pub, as well as a restaurant and conference centre. As the evening light faded, we headed off to our last port of call – the delightful Blue Bell Inn, a quintessential country pub in New Ellerby. The Blue Bell has been run by Dave and Shirley Diamond for twenty years (the anniversary was last June). The many connecting spaces were full as it was Dave's 62nd birthday the day before. As well as the regular Tetley Bitter, we were able to sample Sharpe's Doom Bar, Dunscar Bridge Wicketkeeper and Wedding Anvil plus Cross Bay Sand Pilot, which came on whilst we were there. All in all a very enjoyable night out in some typical country (and town) pubs.

As we left, Phil Birtles got on the hen party's minibus – they thought he was the stripper and he had to leap off the bus in panic before he was shanghaied for their trip to Bridlington.

A convenient two doors away is the Rose and Crown, where we received a cheery welcome from Matt Burns, who has been the license for seven years. On offer was Banks’ Dark Mild, Jennings’ Sneck Lifter and Marston's Pedigree. The evening was still (relatively) young as we headed southwest to the Wrygarth Inn on the outskirts of Great Hatfield. The pub was failing when it was spotted by Ray and Sandra Thompson who were on the lookout for a fresh challenge after six years at the Silkstone Golf Club (near Barnsley). In conjunction with our friends at Hull City Official Supporters Club, we are looking at the last few away fixtures for City as they chase promotion from the Championship. Saturday 9th February v Brighton & Hove Albion - 5.20pm The Lord Nelson (36 Trafalgar Street, BN1 4ED), is conveniently located for the station and bus route to the new Stadium. This pub serves the entire range of Harveys beers and Thatchers cider. Also worth a mention is the Evening Star (55-56 Surrey Street, BN1 3PB) which was the original home to the Dark Star Brewery, whose brews are all available here, along with many beers from other micro breweries. Draught cider/perries also available. Saturday 23rd February v Bolton Wanderers - 3.00pm A newcomer to our Amber Trail guide, Bolton has 9 pubs in this year’s Good Beer Guide. The nearest GBG pub to the ground being Bob’s Smithy Inn (1448 Chorley Old Road, BL1 7PX), an intimate stone built pub on the edge of the moors, the pub is some 200 years old and is named after a local smithy. This is a genuine free house offering guest beers from independent breweries, it also has its own restaurant. Saturday 5th March v Crystal Palace - 3.00pm Depending which way you get to Crystal Palace ground there are two-railway stations close by. At South Norwood you have a choice of a Wetherspoons, The William Stanley (7/8 High Street, SE25 6EP), or The Alliance (91 High Street, SE25 6EA). At Thornton Heath you have another Wetherspoons pub Flora Sandes (2/4 Ambassador Houses, Brigstock Road, CR7 7JG) and the Railway Telegraph (19 Brigstock Road, CR7 7JJ), which is a glorious throwback to better days, a generously-sized and attractive Young’s pub close to the railway station with a central bar serving a large saloon and a smaller snug. Wednesday 11th March v Burnley - 7.45pm Bridge Bier Huis, (2 Bank Parade, BB11 1UH,) is a large open plan free house, serving 4 guest beers as well as cider and perry. A regular CAMRA award winner. The Talbot Hotel (65 Church Street, BB11 2RS) is also a popular venue, and has recently been refurbished, it dates back to the 1800’s, two guest beers are normally on offer as well as 6 regular ales. Saturday 30th March v Huddersfield Town - 12.30pm Another new entry to our Amber Trail guide, Huddersfield offers us 8 GBG pubs including in the town centre closest to the ground; King's Head (St George’s Square, HD1 1JF), this pub serves up to 10 real ales and ciders at competitive prices, so it can get busy, but well worth a look. The Sportsman (1 St John's Road, HD1 5AY) is a CAMRA Conservation Pub, and has its own on site brewery. CAMRA local Pub of the year 2012. Saturday 13th April v Ipswich Town - 3.00pm Seven pubs are entered into the GBG for 2013 in Ipswich and one of the best is the Arboretum, (43 High Street, IP1 3QL), which has a single bar and a restaurant upstairs which specialises in locally sourced freshly prepared food. Beer from local small brewers including Green Jack and St Peter’s are available Tuesday 16th April v Wolverhampton Wanderers - 7.45pm Molineux suffers in so far as there are no designated away fans pub - so you are best trying the town centre pubs. Saturday 27th April v Barnsley - 3.00pm Last away game of the season, so where better to celebrate promotion than at the home of the world famous Barnsley Bitter, now brewed by Acorn brewery, which runs the Old No7 (S70 2PX), which is a very popular real ale pub and offers at least 8 real ales and ciders. LOCAL BREWERY NEWS Big River: Mark has brewed 3 specialist black beers for Winter: Humber Bridge 5.7% a Black IPA ; The Deep 5.2% , a full flavoured coffee porter and The Spurn 5.2%, a variation of Sailmakers Porter with a secret ingredient. Mark is also introducing a new range of pump clips feature in the 1930s railway poster style. Yorkshire Brewing Company: Guy Falkingham is developing his range of botted beers. The brewery is mainly supplying to the local restaurants, clubs, pubs and bars .The True North beer has been tweaked slightly and is now 4.1% abv. A Christmas seasonal ale was produced, Old Ebenazer. A very good dark beer, slightly spiced with fruit and hint of rum flavouring. Guy has started brewery tours and has started educating us with 'Meet the Brewer' evenings. More of a social informal chat in the way your beer is produced than someone lecturing you in a classroom. Get down and go and have a look the next time you see one advertised. Goodmanham Mischief Maker ABV 4% is a new beer so it is just Peg Fyfe Mild and the Mischief Maker as the only two regulars on at the minute. Abbie is continuing to experiment with other recipies on a regular basis. Wold Top Gill and Tom Mellor of Wold Top Brewery, Hunmanby Grange near Wold Newton, are celebrating their global growth in the export of their ales. Not just content with being a big hit here in East Yorkshire and further a field, they've taken Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Norway and now Canada on and doing very well at it. With almost 100,000 bottles going abroad last year with Italy taking the fair share of them, it’s the wide variety that Wold Top produces which seems to take them from strength to strength. Wellington Inn Brewery In the eighteen months since brewing commenced, Richard has brewed on average 3 brews per month. The ‘1st Duke’ 3.7% is the best selling bitter and has been a permanent fixture on the bar for 12 months. In the last 4 months Richard has also brewed the following beers: ‘Minister’ 4.5% pale gold ‘Commander in Chief’ 5.4% rich golden ‘Prime minister’ 4.8% blonde ‘Oporto’ 5.1% very dark ‘Kitty’ 4.2% very pale Along with some of our regular beers ‘1st Duke’ and ‘Beau Douro’ and a couple of specials ‘Mysore Rocket’ and ‘Leipzig’. The new beer ‘Oporto’ sold so well in the pub and in pubs in Newcastle, Dewsbury and York that he has brewed it again by request. Most recently Richard has brewed 2 new beers, a chestnut coloured beer 4.2% and an Amber coloured beer 4.4%. A decision to start calling our ‘one off’ beers by the name ‘Wellesley’s Soldiers’ until we decide if they should join the army of beers we intend to brew on a regular basis i.e., ‘1st Duke’, ‘Beau Douro’, ‘Statesman’ etc and our special seasonal beers. Therefore the amber 4.4% is called ‘Thomas’ and the chestnut beer 4.2% is called ‘George’. Great Newsome Sleck Dust has taken a silver award at the prestigious Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) , North Region Beer Competition held in Manchester. The flagship beer took a silver in the highly competitive standard bitters category which in doing so delighted the palate, nose and eyes of a strict judging panel on the day. 1872 Porter - Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain Elland Brewery, 1872 Porter, at 6.5 per cent ABV, was recently crowned CAMRA's Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2013 at the National Winter Ales Festival at the Sheridan Suite, Manchester. The West Yorkshire brewery first scooped the country’s top winter beer award in 2010. The winning beer is described in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2013 as a creamy, full flavoured porter, with rich liquorice flavours and more than hint of chocolate.

Also in the overall awards, Silver went to Bartrams Brewery’s (Suffolk) Comrade Bill Bartram’s EAISS (Egalitarian Anti-Imperialist Soviet Stout) while the Bronze medal went to Kelburn Brewing’s (East Renfrewshire, Scotland) Dark Moor. The finest Porters, Stouts, Old Ales and Barley Wines were blind-tasted by a judging panel of beer writers, members of the licensed trade and CAMRA members. Together with the other overall finalists, Elland Brewery 1872 Porter will now enter into the final of the Champion Beer of Britain competition at the Great British Beer Festival, Olympia, London, 13-17 August.

However unlikely it may seem that growing hops commercially in East Yorkshire is, it is true. What they can do in the West Country and Kent, determined folk from Yorkshire can match.

hops but it soon became clear that there was no information available for small scale / low-input growers. All the material seemed to be written for large producers or home growers of only one or two plants. The former tended to make use of very expensive machinery and buildings and were high input and conventional in nature. The latter, despite being entertaining, lacked in-depth agronomic, drying and packaging information. Nevertheless Matthew continued with his aim of creating a small scale hop farm producing quality local grown hops and hop rhizomes (root stocks) via a five year plan to build up the hop field with the approach “slower - smaller – local”

The determined man in question is Matthew Hall on right of this picture, having a beer with Mark Storey from Big River Brewery. I met him recently, quite by chance at a talk and tasting session during the Green Hop mini beer festival hosted by Ossett brewery at the Hop in Sheffield. One of the beers we tasted was Big River Hop3, a 2.8% ABV beer described in the tasting notes as “A light bitter hopped with Progress, East Kent Goldings and Northdown hops, all grown locally in East Yorkshire in the Northernmost hop yard in the country.” I was eager to try this beer as I am familiar with Mark Storey’s excellent beers, produced twelve miles to the West of Hull in Brough. Discovering that the hops used were from Elloughton, the neighbouring village was absolutely amazing and required further investigation. The hop project began with Matthew’s hobby home brewing, which gradually grew into an obsession. Some land was purchased from Yorkshire Water with the intention of building but after some research in to land usage it was realised that the land was more suitable for farming due to the high soil quality. He began to investigate the possibility of growing Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

He began in February 2012 by planting four varieties, 3 rhizomes of each of four varieties as a test, the chosen varieties of hops being as follows: Challenger - A high yielding dual purpose variety. An excellent all round hop with good alpha and aroma properties. As the main copper hop it provides a refreshing, full bodied, rounded bitterness which provides an excellent platform for a late hop. As the late addition it can give a very crisp, fruity character which has proved very popular in many beers. Goldings (East Kent rootstock) - A moderate to high yielding traditional English aroma variety. Valued for its smooth (almost sweet), delicate, slightly spicy aroma that produces the classic Goldings finish. Branch Website - www.hullcamra.org.uk

Very popular used either on its own or in conjunction with an aroma variety. A slightly richer flavour than Challenger although quite similar in many other ways.

The next step was to develop a small-scale trellising system for the first year plants that would make them easy to care for and check without having to climb up a 16 foot traditional trellis. The first four months involved the planning and erection of a row of hedgerow trellis work that would allow the plants to grow six feet upwards then up to twenty feet horizontally.

Matthew has had great support and interest from breweries across Yorkshire, with the excellent local Big River Brewery headed by Mark Storey taking the lead. He hopes to continue building on support for the project over the next few seasons and to supply Yorkshire hops to brewers to create beers with a unique twist.

The plants and beds had been covered in hay to protect from frost and to maintain moisture content. The first shoots made their way to the surface with Challenger being the first in early April and by July all were growing well. Beers from the wood – a thing of the past surely? Well no. Nowadays only about a dozen breweries in Britain use wooden casks. Of these, some continue the tradition from the old days including Yorkshire brewers Samuel Smith and T & R Theakston. Others are a part of a growing band of revivalists. These include two relatively new Leeds breweries, Ridgeside (est. 2010) and Kirkstall (est. 2011) and Five Towns from Wakefield (est. 2008). The catalyst for this mini revolution is Neil Midgley at the Junction pub in the centre of Castleford. Not only have he and partner Maureen Shaw returned their pub to its former glory by refurbishing it themselves but they have also championed the use of wooden casks for real ale. Following a successful “Yorkshire Beers from the Wood” festival featuring nine beers last year and seasonal awards from CAMRA and the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW) the Junction was recently voted Wakefield CAMRA Pub of the Year.

2013 is the 50th Anniversary of SPBW and to celebrate Neil is organizing a special beer festival for Saturday 30 March. It will feature about 20 different beers from the wood from local breweries and, hopefully, some from further afield. Some will be served from the cellar by hand pump and others direct from the cask. It is hoped that a special beer can be brewed for the event too. The pub will be open from 12.00 noon and is only 2 minutes walk from the railway and bus stations.

BREWING A BEER - AN AMBITION ACHIEVED BY DAVID LITTEN

A few years ago, I discovered the high quality beers brewed by Tara and Elaine at Mallinsons Brewery in Huddersfield and became an instant fan. So much so that I asked them to make a beer for me at the 2010 Huddersfield Oktoberfest. They duly obliged and having achieved that aim, I expressed a wish to see where it had been created. In fact, when I asked they responded with “why don’t you come and brew a beer?”

At 8 a.m. on a crisp morning I arrived to achieve my dream. Brewsters. Elaine and Tara soon arrived in their company limousine and we set to work. With Tara getting stuck into cask cleaning, Elaine took me under her wing and instructed me about the brewing process. She expertly explained the steps, something that came easily due to her experience as a top teacher. I was given a few simple jobs such as weighing out and adding ingredients to the brew while she did all the hard stuff.

That was that. I said goodbye as I left and hoped that I had not messed anything up.

Once the mash was going, we dry hopped and racked into casks an earlier brew and did lots of cleaning down to fill in the time until the time was right to transfer our brew to a fermenter where the yeast was added. Like a fascinating

At the festival I pulled the first pint, the Mayor drank it; it was the first beer to run off and was voted joint beer of the festival. I suspect its success was due to their excellent brewing skills rather than my amateur dabblings.
