MPs and Ministers support CAMRA’s Latest Campaigns On the 24th April, CAMRA held their annual Parliamentary Reception. The event was attended by Jo Swinson, Minister for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs; Community Pubs Minister Brandon Lewis; Andrew Griffiths , Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group; Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles. Opening with a speech from CAMRA’s National Chairman Colin Valentine, MP’s in the room were thanked for lobbying the Chancellor of the Exchequer in an effort to abolish the Beer Duty Escalator, which duly came through. Secretary of State Eric Pickles took to the floor, describing pub culture as Britain’s equivalent to European cafe culture in a fantastic speech: “This is a game changer. CAMRA’s decision to go for the registration of 300 pubs this year is ambitious but achievable, and then next year, and the year after - once they’re registered it changes the whole nature of the game. It’s demonstrated that it is within the grasp of communities to be able to do that. I understand that you want to see changes in the law, in planning, but let me make clear, this is a big changer - local authorities already have a power through a thing called article four to be able to ensure that the change of use from pub to supermarket, or to doctors surgeries or to solicitors can be stopped. Don’t wait for things to happen, use the power that this gives. To CAMRA, you have my support, you have my desire to see British pubs go from strength to strength – and with the consultation [on PubCos] you’ve seen that we’re not just prepared to talk-the-talk, we’re prepared to make a difference, and we’re doing it not just to be nice to your fine organisation, but because we recognise that the British pub is integral to British life.” For further information on the above Community Pub and PubCos campaign’s please go to the Branch web site and register your views, or go to the www.fairdealforyourlocal.com web site. At last the weather has changed and at the time of writing the temperature had risen to over 20C. My apologies that the magazine is slightly late out due to the editor and other members of the branch, taking some time to relax after our very successful annual beer and cider festival. If you weren’t able to attend you really missed a great event with over 160 different beers, ciders and perries on offer. There was also music from local bands which added to the festival feel and ambience of the 3 days. Further details, report and pictures elseware in this issue. This year’s Branch AGM was held at the Lion & Key, High Street, Hull, back in March. The existing 2012 committee was joined by two new members in Linda Watkin and Lindsey Simpson, Social Secretary and Young Members Coordinator respectively. Already both are bringing new ideas and new enthusiasm to the Committee. Long may this continue. We also have a new Beer Styles Officer, Mark Sewell, who volunteered at the last Open meeting, so a warm welcome to all three. Hull & East Yorkshire Pub Survey CAMRA are compiling a national pub database at whatpub.com which will eventually be released to public view. This will enable everyone to search for pubs across Britain which offer real ale, food, and many other different facilities. HULL PUB NEWS by Jill Walker Hello everyone, nice to see the sunshine today as I write this report, I hope it’s still around when you read this. Firstly, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Paul Miller and Yvette Hardy of The Rising Sun, Mizzen Road on scooping the ‘Marston’s Community Pub with Food’ 2013 award for the North of England in a recent award ceremony. The pub will now go forward to the national competition to be judged against the southern winners for the national award. Paul and Yvette have worked very hard since taking over at The Rising Sun and they are worthy winners. They are also having their first beer festival from 23rd to 27th May with 20 real ales and ciders available over that period. We have another new real ale outlet, Lodge Café/Bar on Newland Avenue (next to Larkins) opened in March. Three ales are on offer, on my visits I’ve seen Black Sheep Bitter and beers from HB Clark, Titanic and Timothy Taylor, all have been very well kept and served. Xanders also on Newland Ave are now selling three beers from the Great Yorkshire Brewery (Cropton), always excellent. Further Newland news, Larkins are having beer festivals on whit weekend bank holiday and the August one too. 30 Ales available as well as food and live music.

The Duke of York, Sutton has a new licensee. Andy Wilson who took over 3rd April reports that they still have four hand pumps including Jennings Dark Mild. Spring Bank Tavern is advertised as For Sale Freehold but I have a report of a new temporary licensee in place who is reported to be keen on real ale but unsure of the demand for it in the area. If you demand it, he will sell it so perhaps you’d better pay him a visit and show him some support. Whilst you’re down there, don’t forget to visit the other real ale outlets of Hole in The Wall, The Polar Bear and The Botanic. With a bit of effort and a fair wind we can start a rejuvenation of Spring Bank. We have lost more pubs to closure and in one case demolition since the last edition. The Greenwood, Greenwood Avenue has now been demolished and closures include; The Silver Cod, Anlaby Road, The Hastings, Spring Bank West, Elephant and Castle, Holderness Road. These closures follow others such as The Eagle, and Three Crowns, both Anlaby Road, The George on Spring Bank West/Walton Street which now has planning permission to be converted to a takeaway. There is a worrying trend of traditional pubs being closed and new café/bar style outlets opening or is it just progress and a change in drinkers’ requirements? Why not let us know what you think?

Mild in may by jill walker By the time you are reading this, May will be halfway through and several of our pubs will hopefully be reaping the benefits of participating in our Mild in May promotion by having people visit them specifically for that reason. I do hope you have all visited our branch website to see which of our pubs are taking part and have supported them in their efforts. Holderness PUB NEWS by Pete Mason Following my previous visits to the Bay Horse, Arnold, the owners of this recently refurbished village pub, namely Ellis Thorpe, Phil Read and Aubrey (Jacko) Jackson together with their manager, Ross Virr, told me that they would like to hold a Beer festival there at the end of the summer. Down the road in Skirlaugh, I finally pinned down the elusive new(ish) tenants of the Sun Inn. Dave Ramage and Karl Linley have settled in well and would like to increase their choice of ales. They previously ran the Lord Nelson, in North Hull, for a short time and improved the quality of the beer as well as the sales. There is a possibility that there will be a joint Beer Festival later this year in conjunction with the nearby Duke of York (licensee Linda Beaumont). Both of these establishments are selling real cider – the Duke sells Old Rosie and the Sun various ciders from a box on the bar. New licensees took over the Constable Arms, Sproatley, at the beginning of May. Phil and Maggie McCulloch have entered into a five year retail partnership agreement with Marston’s. The brewing groups area retail manager is keen to increase the choice of cask ales, and is increasing the hand pumps to four, along with a selection of four Marstons ales. Dave Rosser is serving Tetley Bitter plus a guest ale at the Marquis of Granby in Easington, while the nearby Neptune Inn has been closed until a new tenant is found. Hopefully, by the time I deliver this issue to the pubs in Holderness, the situation will have been resolved. Down the road, the Crown and Anchor, in Kilnsea, offers Tetley Bitter and Taylor's Landlord. The Coach and Horses, Welwick, is to be sold by auction, and after its closure last Autumn and being advertised for tenancy, the Bluebell, Keyingham, is now being advertised for sale. John and Lisa Mowforth have taken over as licensees of the Duke of Cumberland, Cottingham. John is a former licensee of the Duke, which is where he met Lisa. The Barn Farm, Camerton, has been refurbished by owners Heineken, and has now Mail Group - hullcamra@hullcamra.org.uk

re-opened as the Camerton, selling Caledonian Deuchars IPA and Morland Old Speckled Hen. The Brewery has been looking for a tenant for the pub/restaurant, but, at the time of going to press, I don't know whether they have been successful. Stuart and Kate Fenn have taken over as tenants of the Rose and Crown, North Bar Without, Beverley. The couple run the Panizzi Restaurant in Beverley, and Kate will continue to run this, while Stuart concentrates on the pub. They are refurbishing the interior, and Enterprise are dealing with the outside. If all goes to schedule, the premises will re-open by the end of June. After a short stay as manager of the Victoria, Beverley, John Martin has been replaced by Russell Brooker, who hopes for a longer tenure than his predecessor. Russell is currently serving Marston's Pedigree plus two other Marston's ales. The Commercial Hotel, Withernsea, is currently selling three cask ales, and sales appear to be going well. It is good to see this previous CAMRA favourite selling real ale again. Also in Withernsea, the Boating Club is selling cask ale again until the Autumn, and the cask beer at the Golden Sands Leisure Park is reportedly as good as ever.

Ilkley’s “The Mayan” real ale is top of the chocs At a recent special event in Leeds, Ilkley Brewery’s ‘The Mayan’ Chocolate Chipotle Stout combined with Turkish Delight to fight off tough competition to come out on top in a beer and chocolate matching tasting event. Of the beers sampled, it was one of two real ales at the event, the other being Leeds Brewery’s Yorkshire Gold. In a double coup, ‘The Mayan’ was brewed by Harriet Marks, the only beer of the evening to be brewed by a female.
Taking inspiration from an ancient Mayan recipe, this 5.3% chocolate Chipotle stout is velvety smooth and bittersweet with subtle smoky tones. Created in collaboration with food and drink video blogger, Jo Pickard, also known as Lady Gadabout, The Mayan is made with Galena, Bramling Cross and Chinook hops and features a friendly kick of smoked Chipotle chillies and bittersweet chocolate. The Mayan is the first beer of 2013 to launch in the Origins line which celebrates some of the world’s greatest ales. Linking up with leading beer luminaries like Melissa Cole and Pete Brown to create the beers, the Origins range explores traditional methods and innovative techniques to craft exciting new ales packed with flavour. Held at Leeds Brewery’s Brewery Tap pub, the tasting was organised by Dea Latis - named after the Celtic goddess of beer - a nationwide group aiming to encourage more women to enjoy beer. Ladies from across Yorkshire tasted six different beers, each with a different chocolate designed to bring out the taste in each. Expert guidance was provided by Annabel Smith, Dea Latis founder and one of the country’s few beer sommeliers. Smith said, “Beer and chocolate are perfect partners. They are both a balance of sweetness and bitterness, so when consumed together, the tastes and textures complement each other. Our guests at the tasting included experienced beer lovers, occasional beer drinkers and complete novices, but everyone learned something new and, more importantly, had a great evening tasting beer with chocolate.
This was one of our most successful events and it’s great to move Dea Latis north of London and start involving women in other parts of the country. 14 Following a varied career as a globetrotting chef, marine commando, future brewer Mark Storey got the education bug and after studying several disciplines went on to teacher training in 2006. After qualifying he undertook supply teaching and never one to take the seemingly easy option taught science in English to students in France. Upon his return to these shores he took up teaching science in East Yorkshire (but not in French). With his varied experiences up to that point he followed in his grandmother’s footsteps as a brewster and began to experiment with fruit wines with ingredients from foraging in the hedgerows. From this it was only a short step to having a go at home brewing. Without using extract he began to create recipes and it was not long before he upgraded to a half barrel plant. It was not long until family and friends gave him the thumbs with regards to quality and it seemed like a natural progression to turn commercial.

It was then not long before the bottle conditioned beers started to appear regularly at farm shops, farmers’ markets, food festivals and in delicatessens across Hull and East Yorkshire. In the meantime casks of real ale began to appear in local freehouses and at festivals. Demand has created a fivefold production via the installation of a 2.5 barrel plant.
All of the beers are hand-made using the finest locally sourced ingredients ranging from Matthew Hall’s hops from nearby Elloughton to honey from Mark’s own bees. Currently there are five regular beers: Halcyon Daze (3.4% ABV) – A blonde summer ale with citrus overtone and bright hop aroma. Ropewalk (3.5% ABV) – An amber session ale with a mellow and round aroma. Big Red (3.9% ABV) – A rich ruby red ale with a complex taste including malt and autumn berries. After much planning and applying for licences and permissions from various parties, Big River Brewery finally opened on the banks of the bigswirling, mud-coloured, 1/3 of England draining River Humber and it only seemed right to give a nod in that direction. Thus, having begun as a half joking conversation having heard a radio interview whilst sat in traffic on the way home from a holiday, reality was achieved in September 2011. Bottle conditioned beers were first to appear and the first outing for cask beer was the Halcyon Daze at Pave rapidly followed by Windjammer Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
Windjammer (4.7% ABV) – A strong hoppy golden bitter. Sailmakers Porter (5.2% ABV) – A dark beer with roast coffee and liquorice flavours. Mark’s imagination and creativity are continually to the fore and February saw new special beers including Humber Bridge Black IPA 5.7% ABV, Spurn Chocolate Porter 5.2% ABV (including mystery ingredient) and Deep Coffee Porter 5.2% ABV brewed with a single origin Rwandan coffee bean, expertly in collaboration with James from The Blending Room. April saw another batch of new specials: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokai whenuakit-anatahu (AKA Kiwi) 3.6% ABV, a nicely dry hopped bitter; Hindustan IPA 5.7% ABV; a new dark mild M*U*D 5.5% ABV and 5.5% ABV cherry special mild for Hull Beer Festival.

Mark has maintained his local profile with several “Meet the Brewer Sessions” at freehouses both in Hull and further afield in East Yorkshire. Big River beers are now in demand not only in Yorkshire but also around the country. One of Mark’s brewing ambitions is to see his beers being drunk and enjoyed in flung corners of the world. Having already sent it to Everest base camp the next destination is Antarctica this winter. Another is to work with someone like Ray Mears and tinker about with making a beer with some odd wild ingredients that only someone like him would know about. So, what next? A recent holiday to Belgium has activated Mark’s creative imagination once again and a Belgian style beer may well be on the cards. Will there be a dubbel, tripel quadruple or even all three? 20 No sooner had the Branch packed away our festival equipment we’re off on our first GBG 2015 survey trip around the Holderness region. With all seats taken, and Howard’s gone and fitted a wide angle lens to his CAMRA camera, we head out to Roos to visit The Roos Arms and The Black Horse. At The Roos Arms (below) we are treated to Black Sheep and Great Newsome’s Amy’s Aviator, a golden 4.% ale .
We are guided on by Withernsea’s lighthouse to The Commercial (above) on Queens Street next. St Austell Tribute, Greene King Abbott Ale and Tetley Cask were on offer with most choosing the Cornish beer, Tribute. to start with, in a pub which has to be said has a good following from the local community.

We leave the sea views behind us and under the leadership of our Pubs’ Officer, Mark Bainton (above), we head on to Hollym, a very well spread out village as our driver found out as he took a few wrong turns to get us to The Plough Inn (below) voted the Branch Village pub of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

After seeing the road sign for Patrington we head in that direction and in to The Holderness Inn (below). Our numbers soon have the bar staff busy serving York’s Guzzler, Wye Valley HPA, Wells Bombardier and Tetley Cask, and a selection of soft drinks which our driver sampled.
21 The final stop of the evening trip was The Crooked Billet (below left) in Ryehill. It was still full with regulars when we flooded through the door and you could see the relief in the ones who had just got served as we start ordering pints of Marston’s Bitter, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Jennings Cumberland Ale and Marston’s Battleaxe.
Time soon catches up so we bid farewell to our hosts and to the remaining regulars who have enjoyed a laugh and a joke with several of our party and we head back to the bright lights of Hull to await the details of the next trip, whethersocial or GBG, see website for details.
The Station Hotel (below) was a little further along the road. They had Black Sheep Best Bitter, Great Newsome Ploughman’s Pride, Revolutions (Clash) Porter and Old Rosie cider, a varying selection to suit everyone’s palate. The night was drawing to a close all to quickly so it was time to move on.

Hull real ale & cider festival 2013
The end of another successful Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival, thirsty drinkers sated, volunteer staff taking a well deserved rest, committee members exhausted, clergy and church helpers happy and relieved in equal measure but everyone hopefully looking forward to next year.
every year learn more lessons that we hope to put into place in future festivals. We have for a number of years experienced difficulties with accommodating everyone on a Friday evening, being restricted by the 499 limit imposed by using a Temporary Events Notice.
This year’s event was the biggest festival the branch has ever run and by far the largest festival held in East Yorkshire with 135 different real ales, 27 ciders and perries and 20 imported bottled world beers. Alternatively that accounts for nearly 9000 pints of beer, 1100 pints of cider or perry and 400 bottles.
This year the number of people coming to the festival between 6pm and 7pm was greater than expected leading to us being at maximum capacity by 7.30 which meant we had to adopt a 1 in 1 out policy. Apologies if this caused any inconvenience however we are in discussion with the church to alleviate this problem next year. As well as raising funds for CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, the festival also provided funds for Holy Trinity Church, as well raising money for the festival charity Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Thank you to all those who contributed to the charity. Thanks must also go to Holy Trinity Church for putting up with us for ten days whilst we constructed and dismantled the festival, as well as welcoming the public to their wonderful building during the festival opening times. Like all CAMRA festivals, ours is wholly staffed by volunteer members and their endeavours are much appreciated. We could not run the event without their valuable contribution of time and effort. Similarly I could not have organised the festival without the rest of the festival committee who have been working immensely hard since November in putting the event together. Ta. We are always trying to improve the festival and Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

The result was a phenomenally successful Festival. The atmosphere was just buzzing every day, afternoon and evening – there were no ‘quiet’ periods! My colleague, Revd. Matt, now a CAMRA member, took a turn on the bar. He and I had many wonderful conversations with people around the church and so many people commented that they were blown away by being able to enjoy a great drink in such a great building.

INN CIDER by David Litten Local Producer Rob Gibbon – Moorlands Farm Cyder 2012 was an unusual year for Rob. It was a year when sales increased given the economic climate and the atrocious weather that had to be endured. The weather was a disaster for the apple harvest which decreased by around 50%. Fortunately a good friend in Worcester was able to help out with extra English grown apples of the variety used to produce Moorlands Cyder. The ciders stored from last year have been tasted are clear and continue to bear the unique taste and all bodes well for 2013.

Medium Sweet Special Edition (6.2%) – Limited edition different vintage from the usual medium sweet cyder, matured for a year longer. All were very well received, so much so that they were drunk dry.
Rob has recently secured a deal to supply Jamie Oliver’s Italian Restaurant in York and has also been invited to be tutor for a cider making course at Hartington School of Food and Drink in Bakewell, Derbyshire in September. Rob will outline his own inspiring journey from farmer to acclaimed cider maker and will provide tips on how to produce artisan cider and apple juice. During the "hands on" cider making course Rob will demonstrate how to make fantastic tasting cider at home, either for home consumption or as the foundation for cider making on a semi or full commercial basis. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about some of the things that APPLE have done in the last year and update you on some of our future plans. The National Cider and Perry Awards took place in May with the winners being Cornish Orchards Farmhouse Cider and Gwatkin Blakeney Red Perry. We also awarded our Pomona Award to Andrew Lea, who has helped many cider producers over the years. With the growth in the campaign recently we were able to give branches the opportunity to select their entry into the National Cider Pub of the Year competition and a number of branches took the chance to take part. Thanks to everyone who helped with this. The winner of the competition was the Royal Oak in Wantage who received their award at the beginning of our October Month Promotion. During cider month, as well as the usual national events which included our cider trip, the number of activities arranged by branches increased.

This growth also gave us the opportunity to take our cider bar training outside London with sessions taking place at Cambridge Beer Festival in May and Derby Beer Festival in February this year. As Mike Benner said earlier in the recent conference in Norwich, this year is a very special one for us with it being 25 years since the APPLE committee was formed and plans are underway to celebrate this special anniversary. Some of you may already have seen the logo and the posters that have been produced for this event. We will also be trying to arrange meetings with MPs to discuss the possibility of legally distinguishing between real cider and the more industrial keg ciders. Future plans also include changing the timescale for Cider Pub of the Year to give branches more time to consider whether they would like to select their entry into the competition.

28 Around five years ago, Guy Falkingham, having had over twenty years marketing and developing products in Britain and across the globe saw a commercial opportunity to develop and produce his own instead of those of other people. These products are real ales – something he has enjoyed throughout his adulthood.
Following a Brewlab course in Sunderland, he gained valuable hands-on experience at Brew Company in Sheffield and on Lord Halifax’s Estate at Garrowby near Driffield (now home to Brass Castle) he began to gather brewery equipment. The brew plant was purchased from the former Garton Brewery in East Yorkshire and casks from Star Brewing Company in Essex. He originally planned to establish his brewery in Beverley where the equipment was in storage but planning issues prevented progress. He observed the beginning of the exciting regeneration of the old Fruit Market area in Hull and seized the opportunity to set up his new business in old fruit warehouses in Humber Street.
Brewing in humber street After about a year of refurbishing, “Brewery Wharf” was born and ready for the installation of the equipment. The vessels were enlarged to increase capacity from four barrels to six allowing twenty four casks (1728 pints) per brew length. Some automation was added and trial brewing began. Wherever possible British, and, preferably Yorkshire ingredients are used. With his international marketing experience and an eye on potential overseas business, Guy decided to name the new brewery “Yorkshire Brewing Company”.
The launch of the first commercial brews took place at the Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA beer festival at Holy Trinity Church in April 2012. Two beers - Jubilation Ale and True North were well received. After further range developments, there are three main products: Supernatural Blonde (4.1% ABV) - a citrusy pale ale; True North (4.1% ABV) - a Yorkshire style bitter; Tyger Tyger (3.6% ABV) - a distinctive session bitter. The recent winter seasonal ale was: Old Ebenezer (4.8% ABV) - a unique blend of barley, oats, hops, spices and fruit with a tot of Jamaican rum – truly wonderful. Recently, to celebrate the home of H.M.S. Bounty, Guy brewed Mutiny (3.6% ABV) - a unique ale based on an old 1750 London Porter with seven malts and distinctive coffee and chocolate flavours. The recent 2013 CAMRA festival at Holy Trinity Church featured the three regular beers plus Mutiny and a festival special Holy Trinity (4.5% ABV), a tasty Double IPA. Naturally they all sold well.

The visitor centre at the front of the Brewery Wharf has already hosted a number of events, amongst which a party from Rotherham CAMRA were well impressed by the hospitality provided. “Meet the Brewer� sessions have also been held in local pubs whilst a range of bottles for cafes, restaurants and the off trade is being developed. Merchandise and full mash grain home brew kits are in the pipeline as are plenty more exciting developments. Watch this space! USEFUL INFORMATION REAL ALE v SMOOTH What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life. The dead beer is then resurrected by means of chemicals and served chilled by gas pressure through fonts. Smooth beer sales are also known as nitro-keg beer.

LOCAL BREWERY NEWS Big River: One of the star beers at Holy Trinity was Big River Maggie’s Mild - a 5.5% Mild infused with cherries-brewed in memory of Maggie Morris in the Belgian style. A one-off, the beer was based on Big River M*U*D strong mild, the second batch of which should be available now. Previously available at the Hop and Vine and Admiral of the Humber. Mark is working on developing another Belgian style beer which is eagerly anticipated.” Yorkshire Brewing Company: This brewery is going from strength to strength. Demand for their beer is nearly outstripping supply. With the high volume of beer festivals around at this time of year,the brewery's production is at its highest. Tyger Tyger, True North and Super Natural Blonde are in huge demand across the region’s beer and music festivals. Locally, Mutiny is selling well within Hull’s real ale outlets. All the above mentioned ales appeared at Hull’s Real Ale and Cider Festival in April, held again at the Holy Trinity church. These were greatly appreciated and received a positive response from the festival attendees which is always good to hear. Only brewed for the festival was the Holy Trinity Jubilation ale with all the proceeds going to help with the up keep of the church. Slight disappointment for some as Hull Brewery Mild was due to be launched but the Head Brewer wasn't happy with it overall...watch this space. Look out for 'New Summer' the latest new beer which is due out in the next few weeks. New Summer, a pale ale with notes of passion fruit, more details to follow soon. The brewery is also running in conjunction with various retail outlets, Beer and Music Festivals. Larkin's (Newland Avenue, Hull) on 24th-26th May is first and following on from there it is at the Minerva on the Pier front on 30th May-2nd June. Goodmanham Mischief Maker ABV 4% is a new beer so it is just Peg Fyfe Mild and the Mischief Maker as the only two regulars on at the minute. Wold Top Gill and Tom Mellor of Wold Top Brewery, Hunmanby Grange near Wold Newton, are celebrating their global growth in the export of their ales. Not just content with being a big hit here in East Yorkshire and further a field, they've taken Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Norway and now Canada on and doing very well at it. With almost 100,000 bottles going abroad last year with Italy taking their fair share of them, it’s the wide variety that Wold Top produces which seems to take them from strength to strength. Wellington Inn Brewery The new beer ‘Oporto’ sold so well in the pub and in pubs in Newcastle, Dewsbury and York that he has brewed it again by request. Most recently Richard has brewed 2 new beers, a chestnut coloured beer 4.2% and an Amber coloured beer 4.4%. A decision to start calling our ‘one off’ beers by the name ‘Wellesley’s Soldiers’ until we decide if they should join the army of beers we intend to brew on a regular basis i.e., ‘1st Duke’, ‘Beau Douro’, ‘Statesman’ etc and our special seasonal beers. Therefore the amber 4.4% is called ‘Thomas’ and the chestnut beer 4.2% is called ‘George’. Great Newsome Sleck Dust has taken a silver award at the prestigious Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) , North Region Beer Competition held in Manchester. The flagship beer took a silver in the highly competitive standard bitters category which in doing so delighted the palate, nose and eyes of a strict judging panel on the day. The SIBA award comes shortly on the back of Sleck Dust, winning its first award earlier in the month at the Yorkshire’s Finest Taste Awards, the beer’s first recognition. Once we reached the 100,000 mark, we lobbied hard to get a debate in the main chamber of Parliament, where MP’s unanimously agreed the escalator should be scrapped. The campaign continued with the Save Your Pint Mass Lobby on 12th December, a fantastic day where 1,200 CAMRA members met with over 180 members of parliament. Pubs mirror travels again
Another Easter and another Belgian holiday for Pub Mirror in the company of Wakefield CAMRA. This time it was destination Mechelen, half way between Antwerp and Brussels. As the second largest city in Antwerp Province it is a strange mix of Bohemia and late Gothic. Perhaps there might be time to explore some culture.
Lunch was taken in Aalst before travelling on to De Heeren van Leidekerke, one of the best specialty beer bars in Belgium, run by four brothers. We visited this marvellous place about 20 years ago and it was great to meet up with Joost again.
As usual, an overnight journey to Dover and an early Good Friday morning crossing to Calais were made. Once again threats of a ferry crew strike were averted. Perhaps they knew the importance of our expedition! Priorities were set and the first port of call was Brouwerij Het Anker dating from 1369. It is now a very modern plant producing a wide range of dangerously strong and tasty beers headed by the world famous Gouden Carolus Tripel (9.0% ABV). The old steam brewery has been transformed into a museum, hotel and cask ageing storage area for the soon to be ready single malt whisky distilled from the 2010 brews of the aforementioned beer. There followed a tasting session in the hospitality bar before heading off to grab some snap in Mechelen and visiting a few cafes. Easter Saturday began with a visit to Brouwerij Dilewyns in Dendermonde. The brewery began in 1999 as a hobby brewery but in May 2011 moved to the new site to produce the excellent Vicaris beers. Much of the brewing is carried out by Brewster Anne Catherine. Most of the production is bottled in what was described as a small brewery (larger than many that Pub Mirror has visited in England). Again the hospitality was great and as we left many of the party loaded up their bags and crates with assorted bottles.

The evening was spent wandering round Mechelen to some great bars that all had televisions showing the local team in action and just for atmosphere the cheers could be heard echoing around the town streets. Sunday began with a bit of culture round the old streets of Mechelen before setting off for the brewery Kerkom with its fabulous Bink beers. Here some delightful fruit and extra strong beers were sampled before moving on to the Wilderen Brouwerij & Aloholstokerij. This was another ultra modern new brewery on an old site fronted by Mike Janssen who had previously worked at Riva and Ter Dolen. Brewing can be operated remotely if required via computer or mobile phone. Detecting a trend it was observed that jenever is distilled from the four grain Tripel beer.

By david litten There followed a trip along Red Light strip to the Vaudree 3 on outskirts of Liege at Juprellee where everyone had a meal before returning to Mechelen to explore more local cafe delights. Monday saw a visit to Namur for lunch followed by a visit to another new brewery, Brasserie Marsinne at Couthuin. Founded in July 2012, it is described by the brewers as a small brewery – this time only 20 hecto litres. Just one beer is currently brewed – Leopold 7 – strangely a seven ingredient blonde beer named after the original 19th century brewer.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TIGERS ON THEIR SUCCESSFUL 2012/13 CAMPAIGN AND PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE. This column is enjoying the summer break whilst looking at the new venues that City will be going to next season. Hull of course are the only Yorkshire team in the Premier League so will be flying the flag not only for Hull but the whole of Yorkshire, doesn't it make you feel proud? So who is the local derby against? Is it Sunderland or Manchester United? We all wait with baited breath for the release of the 2013/14 fixtures and those dream games against the cream of English football, to once again see the likes of Rooney, Van Persie, Bale (??), Yaya Toure and the rest at the KC. The increase in revenue that these teams generate with the large band of support that follow some of them will, we hope, see its way into the local pubs/clubs and businesses. We will once again seek to find the away-friendly pubs in the towns and cities, so you can enjoy the many real ales in these places. Maybe a nice pint of Marble Summer Ale 4.5% ABV in Manchester or perhaps Woodforde’s Wherry Bitter (ABV 3.8%) from Norwich? I am sure there will be many new beers to try. Let’s all raise a glass the Steve Bruce and the lads, and here’s hoping for a enjoyable new season and Hull City once again cementing themselves in the top flight of English football.

10th anniversary of the whalebone brewery
It was a happy coincidence when Alex and Tina Craig purchased the Whalebone that the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, had just announced a reduction on the beer duty paid by small breweries. Alex was able to purchase not only the pub but also the cottage next door which was a perfect location for a brewery. Assisted by small brewer guru David “ Dixie “ Dean a 2/12 barrel plant was established.
Brewing at the Whalebone is expertly handed by Alex and Jamie Reading. With reduced duty and zero transport costs, Whalebone pub customers can take full advantage of a recession busting price of £1.60 for Neckoil Bitter and £1.50 for Diana Mild. The Whalebone Brewery remains the oldest established working brewery in Hull and by the time the 10th Anniversary comes around in August over a million pints will have been produced and enjoyed by happy customers. A beer named Joseph Allen named after the surgeon on the whaling ship “Diana”, a full flavoured golden hoppy beer has been produced in the past and would be nice to see it back again if there is sufficient demand…….
All the beers are associated with the whaling industry which was based on the nearby River Hull in the 19th Century. Beers produced have included Truelove Porter, Full Ship and Neckoil Bitter and Diana Mild, the latter have proved so popular that they are now permanently on sale at

Branch Open Meetings All open meetings start at 8pm and conclude at approximately 9.30pm with a chance to socialise and refreshments are normally provided at the end of the meeting. Wednesday 5th June - Open Meeting at The Railway, Cottingham. Saturday 15th June - Regional Meeting at Cleveland, The Bay Hotel, Eaglescliffe starting 12.30. Wednesday 3rd July - Open Meeting at The Goodfellowship, Cottingham Road, Hull. Saturday 3rd August - Open Meeting at The Tiger, Beverley commencing at 3.00pm, followed by a social crawl around Beverley. Survey and Social Trips These trips run from May through to October usually on the second Saturday of the month and are used to survey the village pubs that are nominated for the following year’s Good Beer Guide. Branch Beer Festivals Sunday 25th August 2013 - Beverley Race Course Mini Beer Festival. To be confirmed. Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th April 2014 - The Hull & East Yorkshire branch of CAMRA are proud to announce that next year’s Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival, will again be held at the Holy Trinity Church, Lowgate, Hull - 130 or more beers, a minimum of 25 cider and perries, bottled beers from around the world, plus music entertainment from local artists.
