Although there seems to be a slight decline in the overall number of pubs in our area, there is certainly an increase in the new style micropubs. 2XU ÂżUVW ZKLFK VHW WKH EDU IRU others to follow was Chequers in Beverley, this has now been joined in the last 12 months or so by The Butchers Dog, 'ULIÂżHOG +HGÂś2Q ,QQ, Hedon, 6WDFNKRXVH %DU, Hornsea and 7DLORUV &KDON, Howden These new style â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;pubsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; offer real ales, craft and bottled beers, with maybe a some what limited food option. This gets away from the larger food based pubs and gives us all more choice depending on your mood for your night or day out. One of the new â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;micropubsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Butchers Dog was

hull pubs report by mark spight I would like to start my report E\ RI¿FLDOO\ FRQJUDWXODWLQJ Jamie Reading at The Whalebone on retaining the title of Hull pub of the year. This is an excellent achievement so well done to Jamie and his staff. Since my last report the pub has also introduced a new selection of cider and perries making the choice available up to six at any one time. Further news from The Whalebone is that iconic beer Timothy Taylor Landlord has said a fond farewell to the pub creating more space for their excellent array of guest ales. Congratulations also to runner up Adrian Martin at St Johns Hotel who has created a great community feel to the pub. I would also like to thank Adrian for his hospitality in KRVWLQJ RXU ¿UVW 3XE 2O\PSLFV competition which took place in February. Other congratulations go to Paul Hamilton at Walters Bar on being awarded a welldeserved third place and Stewart Campbell from Hop & Vine plus Lee Kirman at The 0LQHUYD RQ PDNLQJ WKH ¿QDO ¿YH :HOO GRQH WR DOO Some sad news to report is that JD Wetherspoon has PDGH WKHLU ¿UVW RXWOHW WR EH based in the city; Zachariah Pearson (top centre) available for sale. This pub has always proven popular over the years
but is perhaps suffering from the decline in pubs located on the once popular Beverley Road strip.

Some excellent news to report is that cask ale has proven so popular that the management of the Mercure, Hull (below), prevously known as the Royal Hotel (located outside of Paragon Interchange) have introduced a second hand pump. Both pumps are dedicated to local brewery Wold Top with their range rotating and being served in very good condition.

Finally after just a few months trading the popularity of cask and craft beer bar Furley & Co has been great to see. They have held events including meet the brewer with Atom, beer/food tastings, Speak Easy and various community group meetings. It is also great to see new ales appearing frequently and that cask ale is proving extremely popular. My thanks go to the management for their support to CAMRA by signing up to the LocAle scheme and offering a discount of cask ales to CAMRA card carrying members.

hOLDERNESS pubs report by PETE MASON The Alexandra Hotel, in Withernsea, reopened in November; this Marstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pub had been closed for a year and was offered for sale. It was bought â&#x20AC;&#x153;free of tieâ&#x20AC;? and is now selling a range of cask ales, including Great Newsome, so hopefully will soon be part of our LocAle scheme. The manager is Colin Hall, who, after previously managing the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alexâ&#x20AC;? , went to Paull as manager of the Crown Hotel. The Crown, meanwhile, is being run by Emma and Lynne Hunter, tenants of the Humber Tavern, while the owner of the Crown decides whether to install another manager or put the pub up for sale. A new micropub, the 'Old Boat Shedâ&#x20AC;? was due to open on the site of the old lifeboat station (opposite the Pier Hotel) in Withernsea. The opening was put back to the middle of February, but at the time of writing (18th Feb) has not yet opened. After stopping sales of cask ale in the Blue Bell Inn, Sproatley, the manager Mike Green has since left the pub. The new manager is Tracy Adams and her husband Steve, who, as well as being the cellarman also cooks the Sunday lunches. They are both professional singers, and Tracy has run her own academy, â&#x20AC;&#x153;StageStruckâ&#x20AC;? for seventeen years. She has not previously run a pub, but her father and stepfather have run pubs and clubs for years, and she was brought up in the licensed trade. As a free house, she is committed to selling local beers, as well as two or three from further DÂżHOG DQG WKH SXE LV QRZ SDUW RI RXU /RF$OH scheme. They aim to create a traditional village pub withâ&#x20AC;?good ale,good food and good companyâ&#x20AC;?, and aim to take their customers views into consideration.

They previously ran the Red House in Lillieshall, Staffordshire, for three years. The New Inn, Hornsea, is currently selling two changing cask ales. The new licensee is Ryan Whitehead, who ran the Swiss Cottage in Ganstead until its recent closure. We have been told that a new â&#x20AC;&#x153;bed & breakfastâ&#x20AC;? in Patrington is selling cask ale, but as yet have been unable to verify this.

This will be available at the pub until stocks last and feed back attained. Cross Keys in Beverley is due to re-open in April (19th) after a huge refurbishment. Twelve hand pulls with three dedicated to Locale beers. Coleman's Cider Company up at Rudson Pava a couple miles from Nafferton on the A614 heading to Bridlington held their 2nd Wassail at Lauren's Orchard. Despite the weather being inclement the festival was a great success again. With now over 400 cider trees planted the attendees had their work cut out giving them a blessing.
The lodges are a response to a growing demand for value-for-money accommodation in easily accessible locations.” We are pleased to report that Vito, owner of the Goodmanham Arms has agreed to purchase the Bay Horse at Burythorpe, a small village south of Malton and close to the Jolly Farmers, Leavening, just outside our branch area. The pub had been closed for two years and was at risk of being converted to residential use. Vito plans to run the Bay Horse as a traditional YLOODJH LQQ ZLWK JXHVW EHHUV DQG RSHQ ¿UHV :H wish him every success with the venture. It’s worth reporting that Vito and Abbi will continue with their succesful venture at Goodmanham.

The Olde Starr Inn at Bridlington has re-opened its doors and has 4 hand pulls on .Matthew Curran who is to manage the place has made the transition across from Leeds to Bridlington. Future expansion includes events and entertainment. Great news for the Old Town area. Marston’s has lodged plans to build a 27-bedroom hotel by its Lobster Pot pub in Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The scheme forms part of Marston’s strategy to locate lodges alongside new-build pubs. In the planning statement for the Bridlington hotel, Marston’s said: “Development of the site will bring a new identity to a previously redundant land use providing a linked site development with the existing public house.

pubs preservation society by ken smith It’s been relatively quiet on the pub protection front over the last few months; however that doesn’t mean that nothing has been going on. 3ODQQLQJ $SSOLFDWLRQV In Hull, the Blacksmith’s Arms on Naylor’s Row, received planning permission for FRQYHUVLRQ WR ÀDWV ZKLOH part of Swiss Cottage on Ganstead Road Bilton is to be converted to a hot food take away with the remainder being scheduled for change of use to a restaurant. In the East Riding Area, the ¿JKW WR VDYH 7KH 5R\DO 0DLO at Thorngumbald goes on and the applicants, New River Retail, have still not submitted any evidence that the pub is not viable, despite having been given ample time to do so. The application which is to demolish the pub and build a Co-op convenience store on the site is scheduled for submission to the planning committee on 14 March. In a twist to the story the current landlord has now applied to for permission to change the IRUPHU VRUWLQJ RI¿FH EHKLQG WKH QRZ FORVHG 3RVW 2I¿FH into a micro pub. Another pub under threat is the Lady Le Gros on Norwood, Beverley. The owners, who claim the pub is not viable, have applied to demolish it and build four houses on the site. Naturally I have, on behalf of the branch, objected vehemently to the loss of yet another pub in Beverley citing
the council’s policy on the loss of community facilities which requires applicants to prove non-viability and also to show that the premises have been marketed as a going concern. No such evidence has been submitted. This application is still “pending consideration” and objections can still be submitted. Assets of Community Value I have not submitted any further nominations on behalf of the branch for ACV designation since the successful one for The George & Dragon at Aldbrough. This is because the chairman and I are waiting to speak to the Asset Management team at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council about their approach to the process. It was the head of the team who offered to meet us after I questioned that approach but despite twice asking for suitable dates and times he has still not got back to me. I will be writing again. While the branch has not yet submitted any more nominations for pubs to be designated this has not stopped others. The North Cave Parish Council has asked the that White Hart be designated and on behalf of the branch I have sent a letter of support for this very important, regular Good Beer Guide entry. A decision should be made by the time this publication is issued and I will include an update in the next edition.

On a more worrying note, when I was preparing the nomination for the St John’s Hotel on Queens Road I wrote to the ward councillors in whose area the pub is. The response I received showed quite clearly that they had no idea of what an ACV is, what it is for, how it works or how it could help both the pub and its customers, many of whom would be their constituents. As a result of this I wrote to the leaders of the main political parties in Hull offering to speak to their members on the subject of ACVs. Despite a follow up letter, I have not even had the courtesy of a reply from either Councillor Brady (top picture) or Councillor Ross (bottom picture.

As a result, I obtained more satisfaction from this period of membership than my earlier one. After about a year, the Membership Secretary role became available, I offered my services

It was then onto the White Swan (above) a Good Beer Guide (GBG) listed pub where we were offered beers including Raw Ghost, Anubis, Mucky Duck, Dark Star Hophead, Oakham Citra, Hummy, First Chop Ava, Dancing Duck Imperial Drake, Manuka, Dukeries Northern Rising and Abbott Ale. We then headed to the 5XWODQG another GBG pub with an excellent choice of Abbott Ale, Exmoor Gold, Jaipur, Hellcat, Oakhams JHS, Palaolithic, Lord Marples and Captain Pigwash.
Next up was the historic Royal 2DN (above) in the market area where we found Farmers Blonde, Bass, Old Peculiar and Doom Bar.

master cooper gets his apprentice After a successful summer advertising campaign for an apprentice, Master Cooper $ODVWDLU 6LPPV ÂżQDOO\ JRW his man in October. The story of his business and his requirement for new blood to continue his ancient trade had gone viral in the local and National press. He was interviewed by Vanessa Feltz one lunchtime on Radio 2 and a further evening interview took place across the syndicated National local radio network. However, top of the shop was an appearance on the ITV National News. Hundreds of job applications arrived from near and far on Alistairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s physical and electronic mats. Following a considerable amount of sifting and narrowing down, 22 six candidates remained by WKH ÂżQDO LQWHUYLHZ GD\ RQ WK October 2015.
It was a bright and sunny Saturday lunchtime when they began to arrive, all agreeing that it was great to have the opportunity and a privilege to make it so far along the selection process. All bar one had previous experience of working with wood in one form or another and this was to prove crucial in the selection
process which consisted of two elements, a regular sit down HR type interview and two practical aptitude tests. Two tasks were shown to the candidates before they were invited to â&#x20AC;&#x153;have a goâ&#x20AC;?. The ÂżUVW ZDV UDLVLQJ D FDVN ZKLFK in laymanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terms is putting the hoops on staves while the second was dressing out smoothing out the inside of the cask once assembled. Two of the six candidates were well ahead of the others in these tasks and there was not much to choose between them. However, from the duo Alastair chose Kean Hiscock for a couple of reasons. Although heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d no serious experience with working with wood, Alastair saw some something of himself when he was young in Kean. He also felt that he was the embodiment of a blank canvass which could be crafted into shape.
During the practical tasks Kean showed the correct attitude. He paid full attention to the demonstrations and showed great concentration, competency and hand/eye coordination. Alastair also noticed that Kean had the same sort of dry, cheeky

humour that coopers require and display. Kean has grown up in West Yorkshire and as well as a good formal education has also excelled in an inherited family gift - sport, representing Yorkshire at Under 19 level at Rugby League. As such his ambitions had initially lain in the sporting path as a PE instructor. However, the chance of a lifetime to learn the rare skill of the cooper was a unique opportunity to strive for. He had learned of the job vacancy by word of mouth and realised that if successful it would be a massive skill to attain. He did his research in preparation and gave the impression of being a FRQÂżGHQW \RXQJ PDQ GHVSLWH later admitting that he was nervous.
When Alastair rang him later on interview day, he thought that it was going to be bad news but it was quite the reverse. He later stated â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope to work in the business for many years, thereby keeping the trade aliveâ&#x20AC;?. Prior to Keanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appointment, Alastairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s order book was at bursting point with an ever increasing demand for his

from david litten services not only to make and repair casks for beer but to also maintain and service large vats at a number of large independent breweries and cider makers. He had already taken on South Australian wine cooper, Cassandra Phillips but an apprentice was vital. There are no technical college courses with day release facilities for learning the “art of the cooper” and Kean will learn “on the job” with one-toone practical training. Kean’s apprenticeship has now begun and will last for four years, covering not only all practical aspects of the business but also interpersonal skills in day to day interaction with customers and clients together
with learning the art of giving demonstrations and lectures to various groups around the country.

The apprenticeship is being funded externally by the London based livery company, the Worshipful Company of Coopers, which is extremely keen to encourage and support the current revival in the country and Yorkshire in particular. After just a couple of months at the White Rose Cooperage, Kean has shown a considerable aptitude to learn so many new skills and has already successfully assisted in the completion of several contracts including several vat repair jobs and lecture
For his part Alastair said “I am more than pleased with Kean’s attitude and temperament. He is making great progress.” Long may it continue.

$OVR QRPLQDWHG +RS 9LQH 0LQHUYD Friday 23rd January saw Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA members heading out for a fantastic social evening whilst presenting the awards for the winners & runners up of the Hull Pub of the Year 2015. 2XU ÂżUVW SRUW RI FDOO ZDV WKLV yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s runner up St Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hotel. As we arrived the pub already had a buzzing atmosphere with many regulars mingling well with 26 a few CAMRA members who had arrived early to see licensee Adrian Martin receive
this well-deserved award. Anyone who knows Adrian will tell you that not only does he keep a great pint but he has also created a fantastic community hub. It would be fair to say that in almost two years as licensee Paul Hamilton has worked wonders at Walters and always provides consistently good ales which are accompanied by a fantastic welcome from his friendly and attentive bar staff. Tonight certainly did not disappoint with highlight amongst the eight choices in particular coming from Brass Castle/ Ossett collaberation named Rampart; a strong IPA which was going down rather too well for its 7% strength. As our party reluctantly began to prise themselves away, some headed towards their last buses home and others stayed in the smaller break off party which visited our

fudge & helmets...branch social to york On Saturday 12th December almost thirty Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA members stepped onto their coach for our joint Christmas social with our counterparts from Scarborough to the beautiful city of York. Someone must have had it in for us as no sooner did we step foot off the coach in York the heavens opened with torrential rain which would last throughout the day. We were determined not to let the weather put a dampener on proceedings as we made RXU ZD\ WR WKH ¿UVW GHVWLQDWLRQ <RUN 6WDWLRQ 7DS. After a swift pint we made our way towards the <RUN %UHZHU\ 7DS doing 30 our best to dodge the rain and trying to drag Leon away from the numerous ice sculptures which he seemed rather fond of.

As time was ticking on we decided to head more central some in search of food and others trying to track down a combination of fudge and medieval helmets…..Don’t DVN It was perhaps a mistake to head central as the preChristmas shoppers meant it was nigh on impossible WR ¿QG D VXLWDEOH SXE ZKLFK had seats available in order for us to eat. After what seemed like hours but was probably more like twenty minutes we eventually found the 6DLOPDNHUV $UPV on the outskirts of the city where our much smaller party managed to satisfy our hunger. Nobody knew at the time that only a few weeks after our visit the 6DLOPDNHUV $UPV was to be an unfortunate victim RI WKH DZIXO ÀRRGV ZKLFK KLW Yorkshire. As time was ticking on we consulted our maps to plot a route to where we was to meet the coach only to discover

At this point we said goodbye to Gillian who left to catch her train home to present the Scarborough Pub of the Year awards. To try and keep as dry as

Wassail by stewart campbell Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA branch annual trip south of the river to Skidbrooke Cyder Company for their traditional wassail took place on 17 January.
Wassailing is a tradition that reputedly dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. From the Middle English, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Waes-Haelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; means â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;be in good healthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and the intention is to bestow just that on the orchard promoting a good harvest come autumn. Skidbrooke celebrate their wassail on the Sunday closest to the old twelfth night (17th January). In practice the tradition now consists of blessing the trees by way song and reciting incantations, scaring away evil spirits by making a racket and toasting the trees by placing toast soaked in cider on every tree in 32 the orchard presided over by Grimsby Morris. Oh â&#x20AC;Ś and drinking the odd pint of cider.
We have arranged to be at the Gas Lamp Lounge in Louth at 2pm so after a short coach ride we descend on proprietor Phil Ellis, who DW RQH WLPH UDQ WKH ÂżUVW PLFUREUHZHU\ LQ (DVW Yorkshire at the Crown & Anchor in Newport. Phil now brews Fulstow Ales just outside of /RXWK DQG D UDQJH RI ÂżYH RI KLV DOHV ZHUH available. Back on the coach and everyone is let loose to explore the pubs in the centre of Louth with a map and a deadline of 6:30pm to return for boarding before departing back to Hull.

It is the local CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year 2011, with an array of 12 handpumps offering the full range of real beers, from strong ales to mild and stouts to bitter, well worth a visit. =HURGHJUHHV (9 Bridge Street, RG1 2LR) below centre, is a real ale brewhouse but continental style brewed in the stainless steel brewing plant which is the main feature of this new style bar. %HHU LV VHUYHG FKLOOHG GLUHFW IURP WKH FRQGLWLRQLQJ WDQNV XQÂżOWHUHG DQG XQSDVWHXULVHG $ SXE ZLWK a difference. 6DWXUGD\ WK $SULO Y %ROWRQ SP The main pub for away fans is the %HHKLYH (991 Chorley New Road, BL6 4BA) which is about a 10-15 minute walk away from the away turnstiles. It is a good sized pub that also serves food and there is a separate bar area with full Sky and BT Sport coverage. You can park your car there. A nice pub of the edge of the moors and two miles from the Macron Stadium is %REÂśV 6PLWK\ (1448 Chorley Old Road, BL1 7PX) below left is a GBG 2016 entry. The inn is named after the local smithy who apparently spent more time in the pub then in his smithy across the road.

The 30th was celebrated with an all day party at The Oberon Queen Street while the 40th was marked with two very successful beer festivals at The Holy Trinity church. Other notable events during this period included the beginning of member discounts, branch membership reaching 1000 and a much greater internet presence. Branch Matters Sadly in 2013 founder member and one time chairman, Alex Craig, lost his 36 battle with cancer and the branch presented a lifetime achievement award to his widow Tina.

&DPSDLJQLQJ National initiatives aimed at saving pubs saw members visiting as many out of the way pubs in the area as possible in order to support them and promote CAMRA. The long running Mild in May and cider month promotions were also regularly supported in a number of innovative ways. In 2013 a couple of members attended the mass lobby of parliament as part of the national campaign to have the beer duty escalator abolished. The branch has embraced The Locale scheme, which promotes local breweries and pubs selling their beer, by providing the promotional material and advertising in Pub Mirror. In 2012 the branch was invited to have a membership stand at the Beverley Folk Festival, unfortunately the weather was less than kind and after almost losing the stand to high winds WKH PHPEHUV VWDI¿QJ ZHUH forced to spend most of their time sheltering in the beer tent (it’s a hard life).

Part four, 2005-2014 by ken smith 3XE 3UHVHUYDWLRQ The Yorkshire Regional Guide of Pubs with Historic Interiors for which the branch had been submitting details was eventually published in 2011 with a completely revised and updated version in 2014. Thanks to the efforts of the branch two more pubs, The Polar Bear Hull and The Eagle Skerne were “listed” Grade II during this period. Unfortunately while The Polar Bear has gone from strength to strength The Eagle was converted to a house in 2011. The branch was happy, in 2005, to provide input to the refurbishment of The Punch Hotel but while the work was mostly acceptable the covering of the original wooden panels with padded vinyl cushions was not. An objection was raised with the SODQQHUV DQG ¿QDOO\ LQ VSULQJ 2007 the cushions were removed. The most important addition to the preservation arsenal in recent years has been the Community Right to Bid Act which allows pubs to be nominated as Assets of Community Value (ACV). If a pub is designated as an ACV it means planning permission is needed for any change of use or alterations. The branch’s new PPO began proceedings to designate a number of pubs
in the area last year and the results can be seen on both the Hull City Council and East Riding web sites. )HVWLYDOV The three bars at the 2005 beer festival were named in honour of founder members Paul Ashton, John Ashton and Tim Bolton where they could all be found serving at their eponymous bars. Due to lack of suitable venue there was no 2007 HRACF but the following year a new venue, Hull College’s newly opened Horncastle Building on George Street, was used. It stayed there for two years before making a brief return to the Mortimer Suite. Since 2012, following a direct invitation from Reverend Dr. Neal Barnes, the event has been held at the Holy Trinity Church. The move resulted in the branch hosting the biggest and best attended festivals in its history with over 4,000 visitors in 2015. What is more the branch were also invited to be part of a larger food and drink festival at the church ZKHUH LW RI¿FLDOO\ FHOHEUDWHG its 40th anniversary with the “Fortyfest”, a selection of 40 specially chosen ales.

Our third new brewery is the Butchers Dog DW 'ULIÂżOHG Following on from the successful launch of the Micropub Nat and Tim have now turned their attention to the beers itself, since the middle of February they have been brewing - in their words â&#x20AC;&#x153;experimental brewsâ&#x20AC;?; so far we have had a Bitter, Stout, IPA and a vanilla Porter.
We are especially keen to brew and present a beer with a traditional Yorkshire head that should persist to the bottom of the glass. After all, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just taste with our tongues. Sight and smell are equally as important. I am hoping to achieve this by a combination of craft brewing and serving technique.
