from the editor - Bernie Cawte In the words of that great comic duo - ‘in a packed program tonight - we have a lot to get through.’ First on the list is a big thank you for all those that turned out through the maze of roadworks to get to our beer festival held at the Holy Trinity Church, in Hull’s Old Town. Once again records were broken well over 4000 thirsty drinkers found their way to us and consumed over 11,000 pints of beer, cider and perry. Unfortunately once again we ran out of beer before we wanted to, even though we have increased our offerings in the last 5 years at the church from 80 casks to 150 casks. Plans are already in progress for next year’s festival, being the Year of Culture we will be aiming for something a litle different to help celebrate the event. Keep an eye on our various media outlets for more information throughout the year.
Elsewhere in this edition are reports of survey and social trips which are enjoyed by our members throughout the year. If you want to join us and help draw up the next GBG entries for this area, then join CAMRA at our website or use the form in this magazine. It’s a great chance to visit pubs throughout the branch but also to meet some like minded people.

hull pubs report by mark spight It has been a really busy quarter for the three FLW\ FHQWUH -' :HWKHUVSRRQ RXWOHWV ¿UVWO\ ZH have a change in management at William Wilberforce as Emma Badham has left to become manager at the latest JDW outlet in our branch area Cross Keys Beverley. I would like to thank Emma for her promotion of real ale at the pub and wish her luck in her new role. Three John Scotts has been used for a channel 4 drama called National Treasure where it doubled as London courthouse the Old Bailey. Finally it is great to see meet the brewer events return at Admiral of the Humber, the ¿UVW RI ZKLFK EHLQJ ZLWK %DUQVOH\ EDVHG $FRUQ It was great to sample their range of beers and also Mark Platten’s Gorlovka stew‌..Lovely! Redevelopments have taken place at a number of Hull’s pubs, these include: Hop Pole, Queens Hotel, Muttleys, Oyster Catcher and The Highway. I would also like to take this opportunity to pass on my congratulations to The Highway and also St John’s Hotel who have been awarded Asset of Community Value (ACV) status. We have a change of licensee at Green Bricks as James Edge (formerly of The Crown, Holderness Road) has taken on the reins. I would like to wish James luck in this popular pub located on Hull Marina and thank him for already showing support to CAMRA. Exciting news to report as we have a new bar The Peoples Republic which recently opened on Newland Avenue. Although this bar does not offer real ale it is certainly proving popular amongst the number of other bars in the area.

Work is underway at Cameron’s Head of Steam which is located in Trinity Square with an expected opening late June. Anyone who has visited a Head of Steam will tell you that these pubs are great real ale outlets and I’m sure that this one will certainly prove a welcome addition to the old town.

hOLDERNESS pubs report by brian johnson Hi, my name is Brian Johnson DQG , DP WKH QHZ 3XEV 2IÂżFHU for the Holderness area. I have lived in Hornsea for two years having returned from the wilds of South Yorkshire and have been a member of CAMRA for what seems like for ever. I enjoy visiting pubs and chatting to landlords which is why I have decided to take on this role. I have to say that the pubs in Hornsea have FKDQJHG VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ VLQFH ZH moved here, fortunately all for the better. The Victoria, the New Inn, and the Rose and Crown, all on Market place in Hornsea, have all gained new managers in the recent past and they all keen on promoting real ale. Stackhouse bar, a free house on Newbegin, opened shortly after we moved here and is very successful. Another new establishment is Luciens also on Newbegin, it is a Pizza restaurant but sells a beer from Wold Top, usually Anglers Reward. The New Inn, now ably run by Ryan, formerly of the Swiss Cottage at Bilton, offers 20p a pint discount to CAMRA members. The Alexandra has also recently changed management as Simon had to retire on health grounds and after a slow start the new manager is serving well-kept Tetley Bitter and Black Sheep Bitter. Another pub in the town, The Marine on the sea front, also offers 10% off real ale to CAMRA members. Moving out of town The Cross Keys at Cowden opened shortly after we moved to Hornsea and we were lucky
enough to attend the open evening. They have 3 hand pumps including at least one LocAle and an excellent restaurant. The Falcon at Withernwick is under new management, and although they are not doing food at present they hope to start soon, fare will be more of a traditional pub grub nature than that previously served. On to Withernsea where we were given a very warm welcome by Ricky and his wife
at the Old Boat Shed (above) shortly after it opened on 16th April. The pub has four hand pumps and is now an accredited LocAle pub and is offering 20p a pint discount to CAMRA members. Recently we accompanied Ken Smith, the branch Pubs 3URWHFWLRQ 2IÂżFHU ZKHQ KH SUHVHQWHG DQ $&9 FHUWLÂżFDWH and welcome pack to the new licensees at the George and Dragon in Aldborough. This is the only pub left in the village but they have 2 hand pumps selling Black Sheep and Tetley Bitter, both of which are kept well. The Tiger at Beeford is under new management and now has regular opening hours serving food daily apart from Monday.

The Hildyard Arms in Patrington re-opened about 6 weeks ago and is well worth a visit. At present they are VHUYLQJ WZR 6KHIÂżHOG EHHUV which are unusual in this area and well worth trying. From there a short walk across the road brings you to the Holderness where you will be given a warm welcome by both the landlady and the sight of the number of hand pumps on the bar. In addition to these two well established pubs there is a new venture in Patrington which is due to open soon. This will be a cafe by day and a micro pub by night. I have only mentioned a few of the many pubs there are in the Holderness area and I apologise to the many missed out. I hope to get round to 9 visiting them all in the next few months. I would also like to make a plea to anyone who is reading this and who lives in the Withernsea area. I am in need RI D OLDLVRQ RIÂżFHU 7KH MRE simply involves distributing Pub Mirrors in and around Withernsea and keeping me up to date with changes to licensees and the beers being served at the various pubs. The Old Starre Inn - the pub now has 2 hand pumps in operation selling a changing selection of beers which are being sourced nationally.
The Ship Inn - held its May Bank Holiday Music and Beer festival with over 10 cask ales available.
Beverley Lord Nelson - has re-opened after closure, run by Sue and Gemma - who tried real ale, Black Sheep and John Smiths, but it didn't sell, so no real ale just keg & bottles only. Rose & Crown - now closed for some weeks but rumoured to be re-opening shortly more as a restaurant with bar. Beverley Arms - is to re-open as a Thwaites Inn of Quality, if after refurbishment it is anything like their Judges’ Lodging in York, it will be amazing and will iclude a real ale bar. Gamebird - Martin has moved to the Green Dragon,ten new hand pumps installed.
The Board Inn - Opened its doors on May 6th with 8 handpulls on the bar. A selection of the ales on offer were from Ossett,Oakham,Tim Taylors and Tetley breweries. The Old Town area of Bridlington is becoming the place to be for real ale enthusiast with The Pack Horse, The Black Lion (pub IURP WKH 'DG V $UP\ ¿OP Bull and Sun and now The Board
Kirkella The Beech Tree is proudly the only local outlet to have the new Ember Inns Pale Ale beer on its bar.It was launched in April and is brewed by the Black Sheep Brewery. A beer festival is planned for August Bank Holiday weekend by

the revitalisation project After 45 years of being one of the largest single-issue consumer groups in the world, the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) could be coming to an end.
The Revitalisation Project is CAMRA’s response to a beer and pub industry which has changed hugely since the organisation was founded in 1971.
The organisation is embarking on a consultation of as many as possible of its nearly 180,000 members to ask them who and what it should represent in the future - and it may no longer be focussed on real ale.
The rise of craft beer and a resurgence of interest in beer in recent years, plus renewed threats to pubs, has challenged CAMRA to review if it is best positioned to represent its members in the future.
One of its four founders, Michael Hardman, has returned to lead the Revitalisation Project - a wholesale review into the purpose and strategy of CAMRA.
Options include becoming a consumer organisation for all beer drinkers, all pub goers regardless of what they drink, or even all alcohol drinkers, regardless of where they drink it.
Members of the organisation will be invited to share their views about the future of CAMRA by completing surveys and attending around 50 consultation meetings across the UK this summer.
Revitalisation Project Chairman Michael Hardman said: “This could mark a fundamental turning point for the Campaign for Real Ale. So fundamental it may no longer continue as the Campaign for Real Ale and instead become a campaign for pubs, or a campaign for all drinkers.
They’ll be asked whether CAMRA should move away from promoting and protecting traditional real ale and become more inclusive, or shed subsidiary issues which have become attached to the organisation over the years - such as cider - in order to narrow its focus exclusively on cask-conditioned beer.
“It’s not up to us though. It’s up to our members to tell us what they want the Campaign to do in the future. “CAMRA has sometimes been criticised for failing to react to the times, being old-fashioned

and reactionary, and failing to embrace developments in the pub and beer industry such as craft beer. This is the chance for our members to tell us who we should represent in the future and for what we should be campaigning. "Who do we represent now, and who should we represent in the future to help secure the best outcome for the brewing and pub industry? If we want to play a key part in driving the beer market back into growth and helping to create a thriving pub sector, do we continue with our narrow focus, or do we become more inclusive? "I've always been immensely proud to be a founder member of CAMRA. I'm just as proud to be able to return to head 13 up the Revitalisation Project to ensure the organisation we launched in 1971 is relevant and effective for the next 45 years. "When we founded the Campaign the most important thing was choice and combatting poor quality beer. Now our members need to tell us what is important to them. We need to hear from as many CAMRA members as possible to tell us what they think the organisation should look like in the future."

You may join to receive the information that is available about real ale and pubs nationally and locally; you may join to make use of the discounts available on beer and cider, EHHU IHVWLYDO HQWU\ RU RQ SXEOLFDWLRQV DQG RWKHU PHPEHU EHQH¿WV \RX PD\ MRLQ MXVW WR EH D VLOHQW supporter of the cause or you may want to join to actively campaign for real ale. Indeed, there will be other reasons as well. If your main aim of joining is to support the campaign less actively and drink cask ale, that is still important, but please use the Whatpub.com scoring system if you have access to the internet to give the branch a wider view of quality ale in the area. If you want to be more active - let us know and we will welcome you, if not we wish you happy drinking and we are pleased that you are supporting the campaign as a branch member. Moreover, the future of the BEVERLEY ARMS HOTEL (below) looks secure after
21 previous failed attempts to regenerate it, following its acquisition by Daniel Thwaites with plans to develop it as an "Inn of Character" and if it's the same as its Judges Lodging in York ,expectations are set high. Months of uncertainty could be over for the ROSE & CROWN (Enterprise Inns) with builders currently on site and talk of a bar/ restaurant operation. Another Enterprise pub, the DURHAM OX is currently seeking another tenant So there are plenty of reasons to visit Beverley now and in the future. CAMRA National AGM & Members’ Weekend 2016 The CAMRA AGM and Members’ Weekend was held this year from 1-3 April. It was good that it did not clash with the branch beer festival this year and that allowed Stewart Campbell and I to attend. It

However, the primary discussions of the AGM were reserved for the Special Resolutions which were surprisingly entertaining to be a part of. These related to the greater inclusion of members, not present at the meeting by embracing on-line voting. The National Executive were solid in their acceptance of these resolutions (at least they did not speak against them). Our national chairman, Colin Valentine (below) spoke
strongly in favour, but almost the whole hall was against the resolutions as written. Some because they did not approve of the outcome of AGM/conference voting being determined by members who had not had the opportunity to engage in the related debates and some who felt that it was inappropriate for the decision to be voted on in the format that was being voted for – in case you did not know, the decision to implement on-line voting was made using an online voting system by people that had not been a part of the debate. Although the members present at the AGM voted strongly against the resolutions (much to the surprise of a battered and visibly shaken Colin Valentine), the on-line vote gave a resounding “yes” and the resolutions were passed. However, Colin promised that the views of the room would not be ignored when the NEC met to discuss the situation. Of nautical note was the Ship and Mitre. Ye Cracke and The Blackburn Arms were also pleasant drinking holes. The Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival 2016 was held in Holy Trinity Church from 14-16 April. And a rip-roaring success it was. This year we had 153 casks of beer, 40 boxes of real cider and perry and a choice of 16 world bottled beers. This ZDV WKH ¿IWK \HDU WKH IHVWLYDO has been held in the church and every year we have increased the beer and cider order and every year we still manage to sell out.
So whilst we must thank all the discerning drinkers who attended our festival we should also apologise to those who arrived after 3pm on Saturday WR ¿QG WKH IHVWLYDO DOPRVW devoid of beer. We have already started planning for next year and have held initial meeetings with the church to ascertain the exact nature of the planned alterations to the building and the timetable of
works which will determine the scale of next years event.
This year also saw the introduction of various food stalls in order to provide a wider choice and the caterers all reported their thanks to our customers who supported their endeavours and all have asked to come back in 2017. Our food offerings included hot food from Hull’s ‘Chilli Devil’; crisps from Lincolnshire producer Pipers; savoury pies and pastries from 6XQVKLQH 3LHV RI 6KHI¿HOG and Oddfellows Chocolate Company from Burton upon Trent and Bellisimo gelato We also had a stall selling Viking Horn drinking horns which made a very unusual departure from the polycarbonate glasses provided.

We will again be using the church, there will be a newly paved square outside to enhance the setting, but also some new facilities inside the church. A new cafe and bookshop are among the enhanced facilities planned, so come and see them and us!

first new pub for 124 years in market weighton At 4pm on Friday 11th March. The Weighton Whippet micro-pub opened up for business in a former Market Weighton stationery shop on the High Street. pubs preservation society 2Q D FROG EXW ¿QH GD\ LQ WKH middle of March a small but select group set off for the far reaches of the branch area in order to visit what is probably the northernmost of our pubs, The White Horse, Bempton. We had been told that the pub had re-opened following a period of closure and wanted to check it out. In addition, as LW ZDV WKH ¿UVW RI WKH SXEV LQ the area to be successfully nominated by the branch as an ACV, we had a present for the new licensee. This was in the shape of a framed FHUWL¿FDWH DQG ZHOFRPH pack from CAMRA HQ acknowledging their status. We arrived uncharacteristically early and had to hang around outside for about 15 minutes, all the time wondering if the opening times we had been 30 informed of were indeed correct. Fortunately our fears were groundless as on the dot of noon Andrew, the new licensee, swung open the doors and let us in.
After introducing ourselves and explaining the purpose of our visit we were duly introduced to the rest of the team, Steph, Arthur and Phyl who are running the pub as a team. They are group dedicated to running the pub as a real ale outlet and have plans for continuing the community nature recognised by the ACV designation.
Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking there were no grand speeches to mark to handover, just a quick handshake and a photograph to mark the occasion. A few days later the same small group visited the George and Dragon in Aldbrough in order to present WKHP ZLWK WKHLU FHUWL¿FDWH DQG welcome pack. Due to the showing of the Good Friday derby match between Hull FC and Hull KR the pub was not only open but very lively indeed with contingencies from both sides making as much noise as they could (I’ll refrain from making any comment on the result). Despite the fact that the licensee at the time of the designation had left the pub in February, we were able to meet and greet the new
landlord and landlady Paul and Trina (above) A quick chat showed once again that, despite the change of licensee, they intend to carry on the good work started by Sue and had already started to make friends and create a good impression. 2QFH DJDLQ WKH FHUWL¿FDWH was presented without any great fanfare, just a simple photograph to mark the event, this time including both Paul and Trina along with some guy in a CAMRA T shirt.

On to the third of our presentations which was held over to the Branch open meeting on 4 May. That meeting took place at the St. John’s Hotel where Adrian Martin (below), the landlord,
was still serving an extended range of beers following his successful (but fortunately for us not too successful) beer festival over the bank holiday weekend. (Okells’ Manx Pale Ale was going down extremely well with many of the members who attended). After a very informative and it has to be said relatively quick meeting (minutes will be available on the branch website in the members area), it was on to the presentation. Being the “cowardy custard” that I am I chickened out of the presentation this time. Fortunately I was able to persuade a reluctant but nevertheless very capable branch chairman, Stewart Campbell, to do the job for me. Unfortunately for me and you reading this I was then told I still had to have my picture taken, hence the presence of that same bloke in a CAMRA T shirt. Finally for this round of presentations on a very warm and sunny day just a week after the open meeting I made a lone trip, using the EYMS continued on next page

weight behind the campaign to save pubs. Following a meeting with one of WKH FDPSDLJQV RI¿FHUV DW CAMRA HQ he has decided to carry out a week long campaign around pubs in his constituency in order to highlight the risks they face. He will be urging communities to get behind their local by way of using it more and VSHDNLQJ DERXW WKH EHQH¿WV of having it designated as an ACV. Exact details of the pubs to be visited are still being ¿QDOLVHG EXW KH KDV VHW DVLGH four days from 25 – 28 July for the tour which, as he is a keen cyclist, he intends to do by bicycle. Graham has said of his and CAMRAs campaign and ACVs in general “Only two pubs in my constituency are listed as Assets of Community Value. I want to see more protected in this way. So, in the week of 25 July I’m going to combine two of my favourite leisure pursuits – cycling and visiting pubs – and pop in to as many as possible to raise awareness of this issue.

regional young members social by warren yabsley Did you know there are around 1000 CAMRA members in Yorkshire who are between 18 and 30? I bet that surprised you. And in addition to those RI¿FLDOO\ FODVVHG DV <RXQJ Members (YMs), there are another 500 aged 31 to 35 who I like to include too. Would you not agree that’s pretty good numbers for an organisation perceived as being full of old blokes who wear socks and sandals and have a beard and beer belly? That said, there are many trendy beer bars around where if you’re male and don’t have a beard you’re the odd one out - I say this as I stroke mine, perusing the words for the next paragraph. Anyway, as everyone’s spread over a large area (in other 32 words across God’s Own County) and always busy it FDQ EH GLI¿FXOW WR PHHW XS ZLWK other YMs, which is where a Regional YMs’ Social comes in. And if you’re wondering who’s writing this let me introduce myself: I’m Warren, Regional YMs’ Coordinator and YMs’ Contact (YMC) for Leeds branch. Every CAMRA branch is encouraged to have a YMC with this position ¿OOHG LQ DURXQG WZR WKLUGV RI Yorkshire branches. Every 3 to 4 months (well, we do have lots of other stuff going on) I hold a social with previous events including a walk along part of the Leeds-Liverpool canal taking in a number of quality pubs enroute and an ale WUDLO EHWZHHQ :DNH¿HOG DQG 6KHI¿HOG YLD %DUQVOH\ RQ WKH
Hallam train line. The latest adventure in the ongoing series of events was the infamous Trans Pennine Rail Ale Trail. Most of you will know it runs between Stalybridge and Dewsbury (or extended to Batley) and really took off in popularity post-2009 after it featured on Oz and James Drink to Britain. Although the programme was very well intentioned by promoting real ale and the pubs in, or close to, the stations on the route, it unfortunately had a negative effect because it attracted large and unruly, non-ale drinking groups whose sole intention was to get plastered. I’d done the trail a couple times with Leeds University Real Ale Society and thoroughly enjoyed it before the numbers partaking exploded. Sadly, I’d been put off for the past few years but following a ban on certain spirits and pints of lager by select forward-thinking pubs I’d heard reports that it was returning to its former glory. When friends suggested the jaunt as a recent Saturday afternoon out it was the perfect opportunity to ‘test the water’ for a Regional Social. From what I saw, the majority
intentioned so it was a green light for the event.
For the record the trip took in the following pubs; Stalybridge Buffet Bar (bottom center), Britannia Inn and Commercial Hotel at Mossley, Riverhead Brewery Tap in Marsden, Commercial at Slaithwaite, King’s Head and +HDG RI 6WHDP DW +XGGHUV¿HOG railway station and the West Riding Refreshment Rooms in Dewsbury (below).
So, after 8 pubs and 10 hours the thoroughly enjoyable day drew to a close with all those on the social already looking forward to the next one. Following a crash course and with assistance from the IT section at CAMRA HQ he has now set up a new site which, while still in its’ infancy nevertheless, looks very good and can only get better (the address can be found elsewhere in this magazine). Unfortunately there is still no Cider Representative and many of the associate posiWLRQV IRU DUHD OLDLVRQ RI¿FHUV (people who keep an eye on

Beer Festivals Pub Mirror There is very little to report on this as the magazine continues to be produced quarterly with the circulation remaining at around 5,000. The content as ever comprises mainly articles by active members and details branch activities. We would welcome feedback from anyone reading the magazine either by post or via e-mail to the editor or any member of the committee.
Pub Preservation Work continued apace on trying to save pubs but as inevitably happens many have been lost, some to the bulldozer and others to different uses. The Victoria outside Beverley is currently a building site, the fate of the Lincoln Arms also outside Beverley is hanging in the balance,

Unfortunately the Fortyfest held in October 2015 as the EUDQFK¶V RI¿FLDO FHOHEUDWLRQ did not go as well as planned and hoped for despite the excellent work done by the Festival Committee. With just over 1,000 people through the doors in three days, beer and food sales did not live up to expectations. This was, however, dramatically turned around at the April 2016 festival when despite increasing the beer choice and quantity from that ordered for the 2015 event the doors had to be closed early. Awards Naturally the Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the year awards were made at the beginning of the year and full details can be found in Pub Mirror 95 the Spring 2016 edition. Another award was the committed to Cask award given to a licensee who shows their commitment to stocking, keeping and selling real ale over a period. This latest award was to the landlord at Walters Bar down Scale Lane in Hull.
Branch Social Activity When Steve Allison took over as Social Secretary in March 2015 he promised great things and he has not failed to deliver. He organised successful out of town trips to Grimsby, York and Leeds where we met up with members from other branches. These were complemented by trips to various breweries in the area with more of the same planned for later this year. In addition there was the now infamous pub Olympics night at the St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hotel Queens Road where a (fool) hardy bunch turned up to play various pub games including darts, cribbage and pool as

The Bridlington Brewery is now brewing every week and hope to increase to twice or three times a week in due course. Having struggled to get brews off the ground for a few months due to their concentration on the Pack Horse pub, they now have a worker to help them out who has both the passion and knowledge for good brewing. The brewery has had 3 brews on recently: Damn Yankie – brewed with American hops is a golden beer at 4.5% Seafret is named after a local music group who have been customers at the pub. Another golden beer at 4% Graphter’s Gold is brewed with German Pilsner malt and ale malt and is 4.1% They have not brewed either Jackdaw or Bulldog for a while, but both are possible in the future. The next plan for a new brew is a liquorice stout – currently unnamed. The brewery beers are currently available at the Pack Horse and Telegraph Inn in Bridlington and the Stumble Inn in Scarborough.

lord nelson wins regional award by phil birtles In addition to being awarded the branchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Committed to Cask award last year (see Issue 92 p41), Allan and Kay Greaves at the Lord Nelson, Endike Lane have also won the Punch Taverns North East regional Publican of the Year award for 2015. This is quite DQ DFKLHYHPHQW IRU WKHVH ÂżUVW time publicans who, without any previous experience in the licensed trade, only took over the Lord Nelson in September 2014. The success has been achieved by a combination of Allan and Kayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment to the combined effects of WKHP SURYLGLQJ D ÂżUVW FODVV service to their customers
and promoting real ale in particular. Not only are the two real ales changed every two weeks but Allan also has a policy of never repeating the same ale â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even though some have proven very popular.
