IT’S HERE AT LAST After 3 years of waiting it’s here at last, after stories of doom and gloom and of hopes and dreams, we are there. We are all looking forward to a great year of celebration as Kingstonupon-Hull takes on the challenge as UK City of Culture 2017. We have seen a long list of events for the year already, which will hopefully draw people from around the UK if not the world, to our great city. We are pleased to announce that we will be holding our Real Ale & Cider Festival at the city’s Holy Trinity Church, our 39th, on what will be one of the last events at the church before it is re-dedicated as a minster. It just shows how the profile of the church has changed. Our beer festival is one such event that helped the church to pay its way in the modern world. The festival is from 27th to 29th April, further news elsewhere in this magazine, we hope to welcome you there.

FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Welcome to the Winter edition of Pub Mirror, and the lead up to the start of Hull, City of Culture 2017. As you will have seen from our front page we will be taking an active part in the celebrations when we hold our 39th Annual Real Ale & Cider Festival at Holy Trinity Church Hull. We aim to be bigger and better with something new, more beer - different layout and more fun for all. Make a note in your diary for 27th to 29th April 2017. If you have enjoyed a previous festival and are interested in helping this time there is a staffing form in this issue; see page 24.
Pubs of the Year we also have a seperate catagory for Cider. At the moment dozens of branch members are scoring the pubs in line with national and regional guidlines. The winners will be annouced in January, so keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. I would just like to thank those members who take part in the judging, without their hard work we would not be able to present these POTY awards each year.
The CAMRA Revitalisation Project is coming to an end with a third members survey just recently completed. We are not expecting any changes until our 2018 Members’ Weekend after all branches and members have had a chance to scrutinise the Executive Committee’s recomendations.
Anyone who has visited any of the festivals we have held previously at Holy Trinity may have been served by Rev Matt Woodcock. It is unusual enough to drink beer in church for some, and even more unusual to be served by a ‘man of the cloth’. What is even more unusual still is the journey Matt took to where he Is now, so it has been more than interesting to read his recently published book; ‘Becoming Reverend’.

HULL PUBS REPORT BY MARK SPIGHT During this quarter JD Wetherspoon closed its second outlet in the city William Wilberforce which halves the number of pubs that they have in the city to just two. Thankfully the pub has been bought and we now see Yates (below) making
a welcome return to the city after a lengthy break, with four real ales. Amber Taverns recently opened the Harry Pursey (below) in the former
Zachariah Pearson building on Beverley Road after a substantial makeover. The pub now no longer offers food and has a no children policy however we are pleased to see that they have real ale available. Another pub to have a makeover is Duke of York. This is a fine old pub located in Sutton Village that not only has a core group of regulars but also people who are willing to travel to sample their good real ale selection and food from their Indian restaurant
on site. Last quarter I reported that we had new owners at the Station Hotel, Beverley Road. It would be fair to say that Andy & his team are showing fantastic commitment to real ale and now have four hand pulls all focusing on local breweries. I would like to thank them for their dedication and superb support towards LocAle. Sadly we have two outlets which no longer offer real ale; these are Branded who recently took over the Common Room and the Apollo. Good news comes from various pubs that are really promoting real ale. These include the Highway (which recently received ACV status), they have a cask ale night every Tuesday with prices at £2.20 per pint. Stonegate pubs had an ale festival which saw Haworth Arms and Saltshouse Tavern increase their range. Our thanks to all involved. On the subject to ACV’s I would also like to congratulate Alan & Kay of Lord Nelson on being presented with ACV status. This is testament to the hard work that they have put in to create a pub that is an excellent community asset and is very well deserved. Head of Steam continues to impress local beer drinkers and they recently had a Cameron’s take over to highlight beers brewed by the company that owns the pub. This included a meet the brewer with Cameron’s head brewer taking time to discuss the brewing process and ideas for the future.
Theme nights are high on the agenda at the Goodfellowship (below)
with a great array of live acts, performances and community groups using the venue. Why not pop along to one of these and sample their great range of real ale & food with very generous discounts offered to CAMRA members. Another venue which is great for community use is Furley & Co (below) with various groups utilising the

facilities. The latest of which is a monthly chess night on the second Thursday of each month. Maybe this is something that you would like to ‘check’ out! Finally I would like to congratulate our branch chair Stewart Campbell who recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of Hop & Vine his is a great achievement for one of the city’s pioneering real ale & cider outlets that has won numerous awards; locally, regionally & nationally during its time of trading.

HOLDERNESS PUBS REPORT BY BRIAN JOHNSON After my enjoyable trip around the south eastern part of the Holderness area (see PM 97) I thought this time I would concentrate on the pubs in the area that have gained an entry into the 2017 Good Beer Guide (GBG) Some are quite rural and can be difficult to get to.
The Blue Bell at Old Ellerby (above) is a16th century inn situated about a mile off the A165 Hull to Bridlington road. This is a free-house, which comprises of one large room split into distinct areas. A small snug and a separate pool room, it has a great deal of character. Outside there is a small enclosed garden area which is very well tended. The pub serves a wide choice of ale including Great Newsome, one of our LocAles (see further details on page 14.)
The Board Inn, Skipsea (above) was built in 1642 and is situated in the middle of the village which is a conservation area. Because it is located on Back Street (its name as well as its location) it would be
very easy to drive past but it is signposted on the main road through the village. It is well worth making the small detour to visit it as there is always a warm welcome from both staff and locals. It has three hand pumps dispensing a changing and varied range of real ale and the food, which is sourced locally, is to be recommended. It is, however, important to check opening times in winter especially midweek (contact details can be found on Whatpub).
The Plough Inn, at Hollym (above) is just off the main Hull to Withernsea road, watch out for Crossroads Garden Centre and take the left turn just opposite. This family run 17th century inn which comprises two bar areas and a games room has been the branch’s pub of the year on a number of occasions, most recently in 2013. There is always a warm welcome and with real fires (very important at this time of the year) in both bars, five real ales and excellent food it is well worth a visit The Shakespeare in Hedon is perhaps the one of more well-known of our GBG entries in the Holderness area. This 300 year old town centre pub, which has remained
largely unchanged in the last 50 years, features rugby memorabilia reflecting the landlord’s previous career. It has an L shaped bar with and an excellent choice of ale available and as with many of our pubs it is LocAle accredited. The Stackhouse Bar on Newbegin, Hornsea is the most recent addition to the GBG. It has only been open for two years but in that time it has made its mark on the pub culture of Hornsea. Situated in the centre of the town just near the traffic lights this micro pub serves four regularly changing real ales as well as several real ciders and some rather unusual craft lagers. In September, they held the first ever Hornsea beer and cider 9 festival which was a great success with over 500 people attending. The event was held in the grounds of Hornsea museum, almost opposite the pub, which was a revelation to a lot of people as they had never been inside the museum. Finally, whilst we all mourn the demolition of the Royal Mail in Thorngumbald we wish to celebrate the fact that rising from the ashes is the New Royal Mail which opened in November. It is in the old sorting office behind the now closed post office on the main street through the village and Paul the former landlord of the Royal Mail will be running it. We wish him every success for the future and look forward to sampling a pint or three very soon.

Harpham St Quintin Arms now regularly sells beers from Wold Top Brewery.
Bull and Sun is still up for lease or sale, the agents are Nicholas Belt. Marine Bar has new managers who have taken over from Paul Bennett. Julie Anne Porter is the manager and assistant is Anita Pearson. Julie has worked alongside Paul for many years so we expect standards will still be very high. Burton Agnes. THE REVITALISATION PROJECT - LATEST NEWS THE THIRD SURVEY HAS NOW CLOSED. CAMRA members had been given a final chance to influence the group charged with reviewing its future direction and purpose. Since the Revitalisation Project was launched in April, tens of thousands of people have completed surveys, almost 2,000 people have attended consultation meetings across the country, and opinions about the future of CAMRA have also been sought from politicians, licensees, brewers, cider makers and journalists. The committee responsible for carrying out the review is now finalising its proposal - due to be submitted to CAMRA’s National Executive (Board of Directors) in December - and has launched a third and final survey of members. The CAMRA survey includes details of the proposals likely to be made and provides the last chance for CAMRA members to influence the recommendations. It’s likely the committee will be proposing that CAMRA becomes more inclusive and begins to include other types of beer - not just real ale - into
its activities. The committee is also likely to recommend that CAMRA widens its current campaigning for traditional pubs and begins more actively to promote and support all public places where people drink socially, including cafebars, restaurants, sports venues and music festivals. Chairman of the Revitalisation Project and one of CAMRA’s founders Michael Hardman said:
“We’re close to the point when we hand over our proposals to the National Executive and it has to get the approval of members for our recommendations and start the process to change CAMRA. We’ve carried out a huge amount of consultation and our recommendations will be the result of what we have heard from members over the past seven months, as well as our assessment of where CAMRA sits in the pub and
beer world. “The consultation has shown us that the majority of members believe that while the organisation will always champion real ale, cider and perry, CAMRA needs to recognise the quality that can exist in other beer types. We should also move away from a focus purely on traditional pubs, and seek to exert an influence over all of the venues where beer is drunk. “However we realise that any change in CAMRA’s purpose may have an impact on our members and on the activity that CAMRA carries out, so this last survey is essential for members to understand the implications of some of our proposals and give us their views, so we can make the final refinements to our recommendations.” Once the proposals have been submitted to CAMRA’s National Executive, members will get a chance to debate the recommendations at the organisation’s AGM and Conference in Bournemouth in April 2017. A final vote to adopt the recommendations will then take place at a general meeting of members at a later date

Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle. The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area. MEMBERSHIP REPORT BY TONY GARRETT, MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY Why Join CAMRA? CAMRA, as the biggest consumer organisation in Europe, is a powerful lobbying organisation for the interests of real ale drinkers and it has only achieved this status through ordinary drinkers who care about their real ale joining up. If it wasn’t for individual members joining the organisation and paying their subs, CAMRA would not have had the effect it has done on breweries, pubs and Government policy over the years. However, it is not all about the lobbying side of things, members themselves receive benefits and can be active in their branch on issues pertaining to real ale and other CAMRA campaigns. But why get actively involved? Firstly, if we did not have active members, the campaign would fall apart. The campaign is reliant on volunteers to take on committee positions, arrange trips, attend trips and to report on pubs about the beer and cider they are selling, amongst other tasks. Attending open meetings and joining in the social life of the branch keeps the branch going, but is also enjoyable and is a great way of socialising with like-minded people. Joining in is a benefit in itself of being a member, alongside the discounts available and other membership perks. If you are not currently a member, then please consider joining and taking a stand for real ale. FOLLOW THE TIGERS ON THE AMBER marvelous maggie in mexborough by davidTRAIL litten We are pleased to continue our long association with the Tigers’ Official Supporters Club and suggest some real ale pubs near the grounds. Most of these pubs will be in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, so I hope you enjoy the real ales/cider on offer. If you find any other places in the area please feel free to email the details at pubmirror@hull.camra.org.uk MIDDLESBOROUGH - MON 5TH DEC (KO 20.00) The Star (14 Southfield Road, TS1 3BX) is a large and popular pub situated opposite the university campus. Usually has 4 real ales and Westons Old Rosie cider. Also near to the campus is Wetherspoons, Swatters Carr (228 Linthorpe Road TS1 3QW) (right) an old 17th Century farmhouse with the usual Wetherspoon fare, a GBG 2016 pub. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - WED 14TH DEC (KO 20.00) Consider catching the train from Liverpool Street and stop off at Hackney Downs to visit the Pembury Tavern (90 Amhurst Road, Hackney, E8 1JH). Up to 16 reals ales beer and quality food. From there it is only 10 minutes on the train to White Hart Lane. The pub which is featured in our 2017 GBG. Nearer to the Ground is the Three Compasses (62 High Street, N8 7NX) a GBG pub since 2006, originally a coaching inn, where you can enjoy up to 6 cask quality ales. WEST HAM UNITED - SAT 17TH DEC (KO 15:00) The Lighthouse (E3 2JG) is a London pub at 421 Wick Lane in Mile End, London. This pub offers Sports channels, pool tables, real ale, vegetarian meals on the menu and outside seating. WEST BROMWICH ALBION - MON 2ND JAN (KO 15.00) The Vine (152 Roebuck Street, B70 6RD) is only a few minutes’ walk away from Kenrick Park 20 Metro station and you can street park in this area and then walk to the ground, this is a GBG 2017 pub. Another pub Crown and Cushion (2 Lloyd Street, B71 4AT) is within easy walking distance from the ground, a friendly welcoming pub which is also in the 2017 GBG. CHELSEA - SUN 22ND JAN (KO 16.00) The White Horse (1-3 Parsons Green, SW6 4UL) offers up to 6 cask ales including Adnams Broadside and Oakhams ABH and often Harveys brews and is in the 2017 GBG. MANCHESTER UNITED - WED 1ST FEB (20.00) Lime Bar (Lowry Plaza, Salford Quays, M50 3AG) serves three real ales and is an away friendly environment, it also has a extensive food menu available. Also on the Lowry Plaza next door to the Lime Bar is Craftbrew a smart modern bar in a 1990’s office block (it is better then it might sound, believe me you will always find be there before the match). The bar offers 3 locally sourced changing beers, with good food available all day ,it is a gem, and a 2017 GBG pub. ARSENAL - SAT 11TH FEB (15.00) The traditional pub for away supporters is the Drayton Arms, which is located near to Arsenal tube station and Drayton Park railway station. This Courage pub overlooks the new stadium and is only a few minutes walk away. However as you would expect it can get extremely busy on matchdays, with drinkers spilling outside onto the pavements. The Twelve Pins (formerly the Finsbury Park Tavern) near Finsbury Park Tube Station has a good mix of home and away fans and is about a ten minute walk from the ground. LONDON – General For that drink whilst waiting for the train home, the Parcel Yard at Kings Cross Station, has a full range of Fuller’s cask ales - plus guest ales and premium draught beers too. There is also the Betjeman Arms on the Upper Level Concourse at St Pancras International Station, The house beer Betjeman Ale is re-badged Sharps’ Cornish Coaster. ALL ABOARD BRIAN’S FUN BUS On Sunday 11th September our party of nineteen embarked on our penultimate survey trip of the year visiting pubs in Hornsea and surrounding villages. Our first stop was Old Ellerby and the quintessential village pub Blue Bell run for many years by Dave & Shirley Diamond. Now, anyone who has ever visited this pub will tell you indeed that this pub is a real diamond and is a fantastic community resource to the nearby villages. It proved to be a fine starting point as our party enjoyed two beers from Cottage Brewery, Honey Bunny plus Red & Ruth both contrasting styles and very well kept. Also on the bar were local favourite from Great Newsome, Sleck Dust plus 24 Tetley’s Cask, again declared on great form. As time passed by too quickly the party hopped aboard the bus just in time for the first bottled beer raffle as we made our way to Cross Keys in Cowden. Now we’re not suggesting a fix but it was our branch Chair Stewart who won the first prize at which time he made his selection and declared ‘I’ve got a small one, it’s easy to handle’ (ooo err)! Cross Keys awaited and the looks on the faces of the diners was a fine sight as we made our way into the bar areas to make our selection from Whitby Brewery’s Whitby Whaler, Isaac Poad’s No86 & Great Newsome Ploughman’s Pride and so good they were that a further swift half was
enjoyed by all whilst Beefy became snap happy with the CAMRA camera. JD however was not too impressed that despite posing for several photos never actually made any of them…..We wonder why?
Hornsea was our next port of call with three pubs in the town to be surveyed, the first of which being the recently refurbished Greene King pub Marine Hotel which has lovely sea views and is very popular with families, locals and day trippers. Unfortunately our driver missed the entrance to the car park and had to do a small detour of the town. A coincidence that there was no ‘Sat-Nav’ on this trip or just too many voices in his ear? We suspect the latter! A few minutes later we arrived with the driver doing a fine job swerving the numerous Pokemon hunters in the town, A certain member of our party got very excited at the prospect of joining them to find any rarities for his kids (Yeah right!). Our ale choices today were Greene King’s IPA & Marine’s Maiden Voyage (a house beer) plus Great Newome Sleck Dust. Sadly the Theakston Best had ran dry as we arrived however our party enjoyed

those on offer and appreciated the CAMRA discount offered. Next destination just up the road in the main part of the town was New Inn. This pub has had a recent makeover under licensee Ryan Whitehead who’s first job was to increase the number of real ales on offer to three….Good job Ryan! Our choices today were Black Sheep Bighorn, Saltaire Blonde and a house beer from Caledonian, East Coast Pale which was enjoyed so much by our party that it soon ran out and was replaced by Black Sheep’s Monty Python and Holy Grail. With the leader of our party Brian frantically checking his watch it was time to move across the road to Stackhouse Bar that has been receiving rave reviews in recent time and judging by the quality of today’s offerings of Brass Castle Hazelnut Mild, Treboom’s Mr Tambourine Man & Hop Britannia plus Great Newsome Frothingham Best we can easily see why. Also taking place across the road in the museum grounds was the first Hornsea beer, cider & music festival. Although this was not to be surveyed a couple of our party were smart enough to undertake a pre-survey survey of the aforementioned pubs and managed a flying visit for one or two of the seventeen ales on offer. Although it was the final day the festival was still busy & the quality of ales superb. A great job done by all involved!

BY MARK SPIGHT Sadly time passed too quickly and with two more pubs to visit off we went to Skipsea and the Board Inn. With a 20 minute journey there was time for a couple more raffle draws with Alan being a lucky winner for the second trip in a row (it’s getting boring now Alan). Arriving at the Board Inn, A popular Marston’s village pub, licensee Gary informed us that it had been a very busy weekend and the pub was down to just one ale by the time we arrived instead of the usual three. Not to worry as this was a new one to the majority of our party (Ringwood Red Boar) and proved to be incredibly
quaffable and on very good form. Our final pub of the trip was Black Horse ,Atwick, another lovely village pub and as Mark S kept reminding people was a place that held memories for him, as his good lady wife and he visited whilst staying in a nearby cottage on their honeymoon many years ago. You’re probably reading this showing as much interest in Mark’s honeymoon as our party who were more interested in getting to the bar to order from a choice of Rudgate Ruby Mild, Theakston Infallible and the pub’s regular beer John Smith’s Cask.
Sadly it was soon time to head homeward, not before dropping Brian and Carol off in their home town of Hornsea for a final visit to the festival which nobody begrudged them of doing as they had planned and delivered a great day out that was enjoyed by all. PUBS PRESERVATION SOCIETY Planning Applications As those of you who have read this magazine before will know, part of my job as Pubs Protection Officer is to keep an eye on planning applications to both Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC). The main reason for this is to to find out if pub owners are intending to carry out work to their pubs, ascertain what that work is and then determine whether it is likely to have any effect the pub’s future. In many cases applications are for minor alterations and I do not need to do anything. Sometimes the application is for something that will positively enhance the pub and I, on behalf of the branch, write to the council supporting the proposals. Then 26 there are those applications that will seriously affect the future of the pub and it falls to me to object to the proposals giving sound planning reasons as to why the application should not be approved. The planning regulations are very specific and deal with purely planning related matters as prescribed in law. Therefore statements such as “we don’t like it” “it spoils the pub”, “the new extension spoils the view” or if it is a change of use “there are too many of that type of establishment in the area already” or “it will take trade away from other similar establishments in the area” are not considered either material or even acceptable objections. As a result, in nearly all cases, while such objections will be acknowledged by
the officer dealing with the application they will ultimately be dismissed as irrelevant or immaterial. Because the system is so complex there is no comprehensive list of what constitutes an acceptable objection to a planning application but both the Hull and ERYC web sites do have guidance on what can be considered. I have a small advantage in that I used to work in the planning department and as such have a little background knowledge of how to proceed. It may be that the majority of you reading this will never need or even want to comment on an application but then again there may come a day when it’s your local that is affected. If that day comes, and you will know because a public notice will be displayed somewhere very close to the building affected, don’t leave it to someone else. Make a note of the details on the notice visit the council’s web site and look at the proposals. There will always be plans and drawings to show what is going to happen and there will often be photographs along with a statement by the applicant explaining the reasons for application and how it will affect certain aspects of the building and its use. If you think the changes are good for the pub write a letter of support, change isn’t always bad. On the other hand if you don’t like what is proposed then it is time to object using reasons based on the councils list of material and non-

material considerations as mentioned above. This article is not intended to lecture but rather to inform and educate those to whom planning is both confusing and mystifying. In the event that there is an application that directly affects you and your favourite watering hole please bear in mind that an objection from a local resident can carry more weight than that from a pressure group such as CAMRA. Having said all that, if you do become aware of an application and are not happy with it and want some advice on how to proceed, please feel free to contact me using the pubs protection e-mail address at the front of Pub Mirror. Assets of Community Value (ACVs) The main thing to report on as regards ACV’s is that in July, following a suggestion from a local resident, I submitted a nomination for the Bear in South Cave to be designated. All seemed to be going well until, with just a week to go before a decision was due, the owners, Unique Pub Properties Theta, submitted an objection. The owners who are based in Solihull just happen to be a wholly owned subsidiary of that well known pubco, Enterprise Inns. The objection centred on three things: 1. The Bear does not meet the criteria to be designated an ACV 2. The boundary of the pub as shown on the submitted plan includes a 19th century grave

Parish Council, would seem to support the contention that it is an asset.
3. CAMRA and especially the local branch is not eligible to nominate properties for inclusion on the register of ACV’s.

Naturally, and with assistance from our head office, I have responded to this objection as follows: 4. Unfortunately that deadline has now been moved again due to the heavy workload being experienced by the ERYC legal department. The new date for a decision is 15 December. LORD NELSON, ENDYKE LANE, HULL - ACV PRESENTATION Back in June this year, following a suggestion from local CAMRA member and pub regular Phil Birtles, the branch nominated the above pub to be designated an Asset of Community Value (ACV). Happily Hull City Council saw fit to agree with the proposal and in August the designation was duly made. However, due to some misunderstandings and a lack of communication it took until November for the pub’s official certificate to arrive at the branch. This meant that although it enjoyed the status and protection the designation affords there was no way Alan and Kate, the licensees, could advertise the fact. All that changed on Thursday 17 November when a small but select group of branch members (see above right)
descended on the pub to join the regulars in order to present the certificate along with the official ACV welcome pack and equally important window stickers. Ken Smith, the branch Pubs Protection Officer, had intended to make a short speech and hand over the certificate. However, such was the level of interest from the locals that it turned into quite a long description not only of the pub and the reasons for it’s designation but also an explanation of ACVs in general.
True to form Alan had laid 27 on some special beer for the occasion, we had to tell him in advance that we were coming, and the Oakham Ales Five Leaves Left was so good that most of us decided to spend the rest of the night there. All in all an excellent night out and a great way to celebrate a great pub and a special couple who run it. Congratulations to both Alan and Kate for their running of the pub and all the regulars who use it and make it the community asset that it most definitely is.

NATIONAL POTY AWARDS The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has revealed the four finalists for its Pub of the Year competition, one of the most respected and well-known pub awards in the UK.

Among the finalists for the first time is the George & Dragon in Hudswell (above), a previously closed Yorkshire pub which has been reopened by the local community. Not all pubs are protected under planning laws and many can be converted or redeveloped without planning permission. With 21 pubs closing every week, some communities are actually taking on running of their much-loved local to save it from closure, with great success. The Stanford Arms in Lowestoft is also among the finalists for the first time after significant improvements to the free house once returned to local ownership.

THE SOCIAL SCENE BY STEVE ALLISON Scarborough When August Bank Holiday came round some of the branch members and guests packed up their buckets and spades, jumped on the train and headed north to Scarborough. Unfortunately on our arrival we were greeted with rain, so with paddling in the sea and ice cream on the back burner, a stroll round the pubs ensued.
We started in the Stumble Inn, (above) Scarborough’s current Pub of the Year and it is easy to see why. Despite being a micropub we found six real ales and an additional 22 ciders were on offer too. Just up the road, further along Westborough we came across the Tap and Spile, a traditional pub offering 3 ales. From there, we headed to the Scholars on Somerset Terrace, a 10-15 minute stroll, thankfully the rain had eased up at this point!! Scholars offered up 7 beers specialising in Yorkshire brewed beers. A short walk later and we came to the Hole In The Wall and a choice of 3 beers, it is located in Vernon Road and so close to the beach that murmurs of a paddle in the sea were heard. We unanimously agreed that no one wanted to see the Chairman’s nobbly knees, so instead we headed northerly
first to North Street, stopping off at the Angel, which is a more modern pub offering Black Sheep Bitter, Theakston Old Peculier, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Tetley Cask and Sharps Doom Bar.
We then headed to North Marine Road, home to the cricket ground and we were soon bowled over by Indigo Alley (above) a traditional pub run by the Scarborough branch chairman with three real ales. From there, and a few doors down, we came across King and Cask, a tribute to Elvis and all things 1960’s, they offered another 3 ales. We finished our day at the North Riding Brewpub and 6 real ales. As we headed home with the best weather of the day, the rain hadn’t dampened our spirits as everyone enjoyed the day and so a big thank you to all in Scarborough for a great day out. Keighley A trip to the Keighley Worth Valley Railway and the festival they hold annually during the last weekend in October is becoming the most popular social event in our branch’s calendar.

The main festival is held is in the engine sheds at Oxenhope, where real ales replace the steam trains, this year the choice of beers exceeded 100, the choices were extended further with additional brewery bars. To extend the day and enjoy the charms of this beautiful West Yorkshire area most of the party travelled on to Haworth by train. Those who have visited Haworth know what a steep climb it is into Haworth. The efforts are

rewarded by the Fleece Inn (above), owned by Timothy Taylor is it the ideal place to try a wide selection of their beers. At the top of the village the White Swan and Black Bull offer further sustenance. As a last hurrah we visited the Cricketers Arms before returning to Keighley station for a final chance to enjoy more of the bars on the station (Cafe Choux Choux) below.

WITHERNSEA SURVEY TRIP Here you are sitting (hopefully) in a nice warm pub with (equally hopefully) a nice pint of real ale in front of you when you idly pick up this the latest edition of Pub Mirror thinking I’ll just have a leisurely read. What happens, you get to the part that says survey report and you think “here we go again another tale of a bunch of drunks swanning around the countryside on a glorified pub crawl”. Well you are right it is a pub crawl and we do enjoy a pint or two but it is a pub crawl with a very serious purpose. Have you ever looked at or bought a copy of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide (GBG)? If so then you will have seen the reasons for and the results of these pub crawls.

Pubs and clubs (yes there is one club in the area in the GBG) don’t get in there by magic it is the work of a very dedicated bunch of individuals who once a month, between May and October, give up a Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon to visit pubs and sample the beer. With almost 600 pubs and other drinking establishments in the area we can’t visit them all, so there is a process whereby members (nominations and scoring are for members only) nominate establishments for a visit. During the visit each member scores the beer from 1 - 5
based on its quality and the highest scoring pubs have the possibility of being included in the GBG (this year’s surveys are for the 2018 edition). So you see when you to get to the bit that says we went to this pub and drank beer then went to that pub and drank more beer don’t just dismiss it as a pub crawl but consider the amount of work your dedicated team is putting into the process. You could also consider how to get involved by joining us, thereby having your say in which pubs and clubs are in the GBG for the Hull and East Yorkshire area. Full details of survey trips (as well as all other activities) are on the diary page of our web site and on the back page of Pub Mirror. As for the trip itself, this was the last one of the season and involved the Withernsea area including such out of the way places as the Hollym and the Welwick as well as some easier to get to places like Patrington and Withernsea itself. Instead of giving a blow by blow pub by pub description of the antics of people you probably don’t know (join us and you’ll soon get to know us) I will list the pubs we visited and the beers on sale at the end of the article. I will, however, mention that, as usual, some of the party deviated from the set route and visited pubs not on the nomination list. This is not unusual and in fact makes for a more relaxed, spontaneous

and sociable as well as informative trip sometimes resulting in a surprise addition to the list of pubs being considered for the GBG. On this occasion such a deviation was a trip to the Hildyard Arms in Patrington (below) which,
because of the changes of licensee during the year, was not eligible for consideration for inclusion. We also tried to call in at the Holderness in Patrington but sadly it was closed following the departure of the landlady. Later on a few of us forsook the Nancy in Burton Pidsea for the Black Bull across the road. As promised here is the list of pubs we visited during that pleasant Sunday afternoon along with details of the beers each had on sale. As you can appreciate details of the scores achieved are confidential and only for use by the individual who awarded them when he or she casts their vote for the GBG. CORFU BEER - AN ISLAND BREWERY FROM ADAM DARNES A Fireside Tale..... When one jets away for a week in the sun, the thought of laying hold of good ale is predictably a bit of a distant dream. Usually fizzy, tasteless lager is about all that's on offer. Well, much to my excitement, when booking a getaway to Corfu, I noticed that there was a brewery not too far from where we were staying. Winning!
Corfu Beer is a local microbrewery based in Arillas, Corfu. They have been brewing since 2009, around the time of the economic crisis in Greece.
porter for the Wetherspoons beer festival. Amidst this growth, our tour host was very clear about the commitment they had to the local economy and people. Interestingly, all the ingredients used in the brewing process are Greek except the hops which are not ideally grown in the hot Corfu climate. This too is changing as developments with farmers on mainland hope for the opportunity to grow hops specifically. Many were surprised to discover that all the beers produced at Corfu Beer are unpasteurised and unfiltered. Therefore because of this they last 15days-6 months, our tour host described it being akin to delivering fresh milk!
Having sampled some of their beers in local tavernas and then discovering there was a free brewery tour, it definitely seemed worth a visit. The tour was very busy but succinct, the set up itself is fairly modest although not the smallest I've seen and with ample capacity. The tour host was a friendly, young Greek chap who had grown up in the local area. He was very passionate and informed about brewing and the processes used. He spoke proudly about the expansion of the brewery, now exporting to mainland Greece and the USA. Impressively, they have had a beer featured at the Great British Beer Festival in London and also brewed a coffee
Some of the beers available: Bitter Dark 5% vol - Made from roasted barley, full of character and quite stout-like. Definitely for the committed dark ale drinkers although served chilled. Special Red 5% vol Described as being made from caramelised malt and a fruity yeast. In my view this has a sweet and fruity finish and quite universally accessible to novice real ale drinkers. My personal favourite and certainly comparable to a good
British real ale. Contessa IPA 6.2% vol another very flavoursome and full bodied drop, packs a hoppy punch and with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Amorosa Weiss 5.6% vol made with a fruity yeast that gives it a banana note, pleasant but I personally couldn't have more than a couple. Less citrusy than most wheat beers. RoyaI Ionian Pilsner 5% vol hoppy aroma and comparable to a Czech or German lager, great to have a locally made good quality lager to sip on the beach. Ionian Epos 7.5% vol - made with the addition of Corfu honey. It's described as a barley wine. I felt it very similar 33 to some Belgian beers and certainly not a session ale! The brewery also produces 1842 Lemon Ginger Beer 2% vol & Cellar 15 5% which is an unpasteurised and unfiltered lager and only has a 15 day chilled shelf life. Corfu Beer hold a festival in October which would be marvellous if on holiday at that time, though I confess to wondering about returning later next year to coincide with the beer festival. Overall, some fantastic beers and always great to see production in the traditional way on the island and with a strong commitment to local sourcing and employment. At the time of writing there still remains a certain amount of work to do however, to bring the building to a position where brewing can start. It will be really good to see the brewery back to firing on all cylinders again. Rob says that once they have their first brew up and running, they will continue regular brewing throughout 2017.
