IN THIS ISSUE

Letter from the CEO

Nicholas, our cover story, is a very lucky dog. There are so many animal lovers here in Tampa Bay who are willing to stop their car to rescue an abandoned animal in the streets and bring them to our shelter. One of the many reasons I feel so lucky to work at HSTB is because of our amazing medical staff who are so knowledgeable and love to help heal these animals. Through your support, they were able to provide the best possible medical care for the 14,396 animals that entered our doors last year. Not only was Nicolas rescued, he found the perfect home like 13,298 other animals last year.

Tampa Bay also cares deeply about the plight of outside stray cats. It was truly an honor to give the $3,500 reward to the two people who were brave enough to come forward to the sheriff’s office to have the abuser arrested for cruelty to animals (see page 6). I hope he is still sitting in jail for the cats that he maimed and killed. It is estimated there are more than 200,000 outdoor stray cats in Hillsborough County. We are so thankful that there are so many volunteers willing to trap and sterilize those cats and feed them daily. To date, HSTB has performed TNVR (trap/neuter/vaccinate/ return) for more than 77,000 cats since 2008. That is a huge number of cats who have been saved.

Stay tuned for other heartfelt stories about what we do for animals in this community every single day. We appreciate your support and couldn’t do it without you.

NO MORE PAIN

Frightened terrier mix covered in painful burrs finds hope and healing

TThe Humane Society of Tampa Bay takes in thousands of animals annually. More than half of these animals are strays, brought to us by kind Tampa Bay citizens who find them or by our Rescue Team. In 2022 alone, over 6,500 scared and defenseless stray animals were brought to HSTB. One such stray pet was Nicholas, a 2-year-old terrier mix. A good Samaritan found Nicholas wandering the streets in severe pain and knew that she must bring him to the HSTB Intake Department immediately. Nicholas was covered head to paw in burrs that had wrapped and tangled themselves in his unkempt and matted fur. The burrs turned his fur into a rat’s nest, making whatever he touched become stuck and adding to the pain. The burrs had become so deep that they were scratching his skin and creating open wounds in the creases of his legs and stomach.

Due to his intense discomfort, the intake veterinary staff knew it was imperative that he be sedated and shaved immediately. It was a long and tedious process; they handpicked the burrs out of his fur one by one and delicately shaved him to give him the relief he deserved. He was then given antibiotics for his infected skin to ensure the wounds did not become more severe. While Nicholas felt better physically and could move around without

foreign objects ripping open his skin, he was scared and unsure who to trust. We can only imagine what life was like for him before he came to HSTB.

After being closely monitored for days, Nicholas was ready to find his forever family. However, with the trauma he’d experienced, he was very anxious during meet-and-greets with potential adopters. He would urinate from the stress and then try to hide or become one with the wall. Even on walks, he would roll over and refuse to move, and the staff became extremely worried about him.

Many unsuccessful meets-and-greets later, he finally met his forever family! Adopters Andrew and his daughter came to HSTB looking for a new dog but wanted one that was having a hard time finding a home. When they were told about Nicholas, they immediately wanted to meet him. Andrew’s daughter sat on the floor and waited quietly for Nicholas to come to her. After a few minutes, he moved tentatively towards her and, suddenly realizing he’d met the one he’d been waiting for, he crawled into her lap, licked her face, and wagged his tail! He was home.

REWARD GIVEN for Capture of Town & Country Cat Killer

In 2022, the Tampa Bay community was rocked by the shooting and killing of stray cats in the Town ‘N’ Country area of Hillsborough County. HSTB immediately offered a $2,500 reward for capturing the person(s) responsible for this deplorable act on defenseless animals, to stop more cats from being harmed. Florida Voices for Animals donated an additional $1,000 to the reward. The perpetrator evaded capture for many months, but those in the community did not give up hope that he would be caught eventually.

Finally, a courageous woman and her boyfriend became heroes to the cats and community. They caught their neighbor in the act, gun in hand, shooting at defenseless and frightened cats. This fearless couple sprang into action, chasing him and calling the police. After months, the cats’ nightmare was over.

When we learned more about the couple, we found that they are avid volunteers with the TNVR program and had even taken in multiple cats who were maimed by the senseless crime. They are devoted to the cats in our community and do whatever they can to ensure they are happy, healthy, and safe. HSTB was honored to be able to give them the reward for their act of bravery and for putting the cats first.

TNVR

Good for Community

The TNVR Program at HSTB began in 2007 and is now a pillar of the Tampa Bay animal welfare community. Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (TNVR), is the humane method of controlling feral cat populations. With the help of incredible volunteer trappers, 77,873 cats have been helped since 2008!

HSTB believes in caring for the whole community, reaching beyond the confines of our county and shelter. When Rescue Pets of Florida and Pasco County Animal Services reached out with a great need for TNVR but no resources to start a program, HSTB offered use of our facilities. Now, each month, the groups transport their cats to HSTB’s shelter for “pop-up” TNVR clinics.

Caring for Community Cats

CATS HARD AT WORK a Life-saving Solution

The Working Cat Program is just one of many initiatives aimed at saving the lives of cats in our community! Previously known as the Barn Cat Program, it began in answer to a serious issue. At that time, some feral cats receiving TNVR services at the Animal Hospital could not be released back into their neighborhoods for a variety reasons. Other cats came to the shelter as strays but were not socialized enough to be adopted into homes. HSTB thought of a solution that solved both problems, the Working Cat Program. Since June 2019, 710 working cats have been adopted.

Working cats are semi-social cats that would be unhappy in home environments but thrive in barns, warehouses, sheds, breweries, etc. where they provide free rodent control, farm animal companionship, and overall cuteness! Barn cat adopters provide these cats a second chance, daily food and water, and safe, cozy places to live out their lives.

One of the establishments that takes advantage of the working cat program is Magnanimous Brewing! They adopted four cats (pictured at right) for their various locations of breweries to keep the rodents away and bring joy to staff and guests. With the community coming together, the Working Cat Program will continue to save lives.

2022 SPAKITTY DINNER a Delicious Success

2022 SpaKitty Dinner, the annual spaghetti dinner held to honor and fundraise for the TNVR program, was a great success! It was originally scheduled for November, but Hurricane Nicole had other plans. It was rescheduled for January 11 th and no one was deterred. It was a wonderful night of delicious food from Ava, beautiful music from Ray Gurka Music, and a silent auction. We are thankful for everyone who came out to celebrate the feral cat community!

SAGE

Many may remember Sage, the poor puppy found by a good Samaritan eating from the garbage with a metal chain embedded so deeply into her flesh it was ripping through. Sage needed immediate surgery to remove the chain and repair the injured tissue. While Sage has physical scars that will never fade, she returned to being a happy three-month-old puppy.

Sage attracted the attention of Marvel actor and former professional wrestler Dave Bautista (pictured above right and below), who came in to adopt her shortly after seeing HSTB’s social media post about her story! A life-long pitbull lover and advocate, he wanted to give Sage, now named Penny, the life she deserved. And he has!

It has been over one year since Dave adopted Penny, and she is far from the scared, injured, and alone puppy she was when she came to HSTB. Penny is the happiest, sweetest pup who loves to run around with Dave and play with her pitbull siblings, Ollie, Maggie and Tallulah. It is apparent that Penny loves her life and we couldn’t be happier that her superhero came to save her. A big thank-you to Dave and all those who rescue, adopt, and advocate for pit bulls.

HEALING Hospital

MITTENS

Mittens was an abandoned cat, lonely and scared, when Mrs. Phillips rescued him. He was also very sick with horrible ear and skin infections. She was already in love with him and desperately wanted to help him but was limited financially. She was prepared to make the difficult decision to surrender Mittens to the shelter when she went to the HSTB Animal Hospital.

Mittens needed treatment and reoccurring appointments with the vet to get him on the road to recovery, and thankfully the Pet Assistance Grant was able to help! He immediately got medicine and Mrs. Phillips was able to apply and get approved for Care Credit to continue his treatments. She was so happy she got to keep her new beloved cat!

DIOR

When sweet Dior suddenly stopped eating, her owner was concerned. As the third day started without Dior eating, he knew he needed to do something immediately but he could not afford to go through an expensive treatment. He went to the HSTB Animal Hospital to see if there was any accommodation for his financial situation.

The vet techs helped Mr. Trujillio sign up for the Pet Assistance Grant that covered the cost of the bloodwork, exam to rule out more serious issues, and medications she needed to deal with her GI issues. He was over the moon that Dior received treatment and that it didn’t take long for her to start eating again!

PANCHO & PIOLIN

In a terrible turn of events, Pancho and Piolin were ruthlessly attacked by another dog. They had open wounds and their owner brought them to the HSTB Animal Hospital immediately. Their extensive injuries needed to be cleaned, and they both needed antibiotics. Unfortunately, their owner could not afford the treatment. Luckily the Pet Assistance Grant covered all the treatment cost as well as their annual vaccinations which were due at the time.

The family was overjoyed when the day that started out so terribly ended with everyone safe, well and home together!

HUMANESOCIETYTAMPA.ORG 11

Ruby, a 3-year-old bloodhound, came to HSTB when her owners could no longer afford to care for her. She had multiple health concerns. Most notably, she had extensive entropion, a condition where an eyelid grows inward causing the eyelashes to rub the eyeball constantly. This condition is not only painful but it also leads to serious infection. Ruby could not see, and every blink was agonizing.

The HSTB veterinary staff realized she needed surgery immediately to relieve her suffering. She came through the procedure with flying colors and woke up with a brand new outlook on life, literally! After a few weeks to recover, Ruby was finally ready to be placed for adoption, just in time for the holidays! A wonderful family saw her on the HSTB website and came to the shelter right away to meet her. It didn’t take long for Ruby to know she’d found her family; she left that day with bright, happy eyes fixed ahead on her beautiful future.

PASCAL

On a very busy day at the shelter, a shopping bag was left next to the adoption desk. When the adoption manager found the bag and looked inside, a tiny, starving chameleon peered up at her with pleading eyes. The manager brought the little lizard straight to HSTB veterinary technician and resident reptile expert, Kat Hanna. Kat confirmed that Pascal was not only underweight, but also needed heat lamp therapy as soon as possible. She also fostered Pascal for the next few days so that she could recover and gain weight.

Chameleons take a lot of work and have specific needs that require specialized care, continued on page 13

research and equipment. When Pascal was ready for adoption, the staff posted her information on social media seeking a home experienced in this level of reptile care.

As fate would have it, the Brooks family saw the post and came straight to the shelter. They had recently adopted a similar reptile, and were certain they had the knowledge, patience, and willingness to provide for her! Pascal came to the shelter in a discarded bag, but left in the arms a loving mom, brother, and sister, a welldeserved upgrade!

LEO

Sweet senior Leo was surrendered to HSTB when his previous owner suffered from health complications and could no longer care for him. Leo was extremely anxious, scared, and confused in the shelter and spent most of his days hiding, hoping no one paid attention to him.

Alex came to the shelter looking for a cat to adopt. When he saw Leo hiding, he sat quietly on the floor and tried to coax the traumatized kitty into his lap. After two hours, Leo finally ventured out for a visit. Unfortunately, Alex couldn’t stay any longer.

Unable to get Leo out of his mind, Alex came back to the shelter with his wife and in-laws. This time, Leo came right out when Alex sat next to him; he even let Alex pick him up! It was a match made in heaven and well worth the wait!

TOM BRADY The GOAT, On and Off the Field

It is no secret that Tom Brady is an incredible football player, the greatest of all time, in fact! But, not everyone knows that he’s also a champion for animals. During Brady’s time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he volunteered with his children at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay! He came and went quietly and without fanfare, making sure the focus was on his children and the animals.

The Bradys, sometimes accompanied by Logan Ryan’s family, helped by walking dogs, socializing cats and kittens, and feeding rabbits. They also enjoyed visiting with veterinary and intake staff and learning about the variety of animals at the shelter and everything that goes into their care.

Brady’s gift of time, his interactions with staff, and his attention to the homeless pets made it clear that he is both a strong advocate for animals and a fantastic father. In fact, he recently "gave in" to his daughters request to adopt two of the kittens she had fallen in love with at the shelter.

HSTB is very grateful to the Brady and Ryan families for sharing their time and compassion with the animals. The staff, volunteers and all the animals at HSTB wish #12 all the best in retirement; our doors will always be open to the GOAT!

to Logan Ryan and his foundation, RARF (Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation), for providing free obedience training for dogs adopted from HSTB in the summer of 2022.

Humane Society of Tampa Bay Presents

Children are future pet owners, philanthropists, and changemakers; that is why the humane education program at HSTB is so important! Staff and volunteers love to witness children of all ages and backgrounds spend time with the animals and learn about how the shelter works. Due to the ongoing success and requests from the community, the Humane Education programs are expanding!

CRITTER CAMP: HSTB’s most popular education program, Critter Camp runs all summer and during extended breaks during the school year! Campers learn about animal care, safety and careers while hanging out with shelter pets, playing games, doing crafts, and helping with shelter activities.

PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT: Parents need a night out, and that’s where HSTB comes in! Due to popular demand, the program is now offered twice a month and with fun themes. Drop your two-legged kiddos off at the shelter from 6-10pm to play games, do crafts, and play with furry friends!

PETS & TOTS: For children ages four and under, HSTB holds Pets & Tots twice a month! Parents, grandparents, nannies, and more are invited to bring their tot to the shelter to play with small pets and do an activity. It’s a great way to expose little ones to animals in a safe environment!

NO-SCHOOL DAYS: Whenever public schools are off, HSTB has parents’ backs! Your child can spend their day off with adoptable pets, playing games and enjoying fun activities!

PAWS FOR LITERACY: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45pm to 4:00pm, school-age children are invited to practice their reading skills while spendig time with the animals. HSTB has books and stools and will partner them up with an adorable adoptable waiting to hear a nice story!

UNCORKED FOR A CAUSE Victor & Sanna Hedman host event for HSTB

For nearly a decade, Victor Hedman, defenseman with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and his wife Sanna have been faithful, generous partners of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. In 2022, that partnership reached new heights with the Uncorked for a Cause fundraising event!

It was a fantastic evening attended by Lightning coach Jon Cooper and nearly all of the players. Guests enjoyed live and silent auctions with items donated by the athletes as well as meet-and-greets with the team. All told, more than $65,000 was raised for the homeless animals at HSTB.

Thank you, Victor and Sanna Hedman for your leadership in the community and for helping HSTB continue the important work of saving lives.

VOLUNTEER Of The Quarter

Joanne Hubert

After having enjoyed a career traveling the world with TWA, Joanne Hubert joined the volunteer team at HSTB! Leader, mentor, helper, fundraiser, counselor, tour guide, and friend are ways staff and volunteers describe Joanne.

You might see Joanne assisting adoption coordinators, fitting newly adopted dogs with a new harness in the Retail Store, leading a team of special event assistants at an off-site “yappy hour” and, upon returning, give an impromptu tour to potential adopters and supporters.

Being the top Lone Wolf fundraiser for her favorite event of the year, Bark in the Park, shows Joanne’s incredible passion for and dedication to the animals! She finds inspiration through her grandchildren, who are quick to assist when she needs helpful hands! She loves having the opportunity to share her love and dedication for animals with them and watch them learn and understand the vital roles animals play in our lives.

Thank you, Joanne for all you do for HSTB, the Community, and the animals!
