GOLD SILVER BRONZE
CORPORATE PARTNERS

It is our honor to welcome all of you to the 2023 HRC Columbus Dinner as we celebrate this year’s theme: “Without Exception”.

We would like to thank every member of the LGBTQ+ community, every ally, every supportive friend & family member, every corporate partner, every Federal Club member, every table captain, every silent auction donor, every dedicated volunteer and every HRC staff partners represented here tonight.

It is through YOUR sweat equity, YOUR dollars, and YOUR dedication that the Human Rights Campaign is successful.

As we gather, in excitement, to celebrate and honor those who have fought hard for equality without exception locally, and nationally. We recognize that there is more work to be done to combat the continued attacks against our trans, BIPOC, and drag communities.

There are a record number of anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ bills being pushed through Congress. The equality act is still hanging in the balance. Our LGBTQ+ children are losing their human rights. Legislators are trying to whitewash the atrocities of our past by blocking critical race theory lessons.

We too share in the dream that one day we will be seen by the continents of our character rather than the gender or sexual orientation we ascribe to.

Let us continue to tell our stories without exception!

Let us continue to show up for one another without exception!

Let us expand the boundaries of our service without exception!

Let us continue, together to go higher, without exception!

Let us be strong. Let us be unified. Let us be HRC without exception!

WELCOME LETTER

Hailie Sahar

VISABILITY AWARD

Pose star Hailie Sahar drops her debut pop single, Star Traveler, co-written by Kes Kross (Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Joe Jonas) choreographed by JR Taylor (JLo, Beyonce), and directed by Hailie and business partner, Jayce Baron. The music video is a short narrative film that features a transgender teen actor searching for the confidence to be herself through a mysterious videogame she discovers. While on a fascinating extraterrestrial journey, Sahar reminds the world that, no matter what, it is always best to be yourself and don’t let the bullies of the universe take away your stride. As legislation in the country continues to target the LGBTQ+ community, we continue to work, serve, walk, and EAT.

Hailie executive-produced and co-directed with Jayce Baron the award-winning anti-crime documentary, Beyond Ed Buck , which takes a look at internalized homophobia, transphobia, addiction, and the psychological root of predatory behaviors. The film provides a deeper and broader exploration of challenges faced by the Black and Brown LGBTQ+ community. Beyond Ed Buck premiered in 2022 on AMC’s ALLBLK and is now streaming on multiple platforms.

Hailie starred in the two-time Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated FX series, Pose, produced by Ryan Murphy. Pose was the recipient of the AFI TV Program of the Year and the GLAAD Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Pose was also nominated for a Television Critics Choice Award. Pose made global history by encompassing the largest transgender cast in starring roles on a hit television. Hailie can also be seen in the hit Freeform series, Good Trouble

Hailie is set to star and executively produce the iconic trans-rights hero, Sir Lady Java, in the new biopic. Emmy award-winner Anthony Hemingway is slated to direct and executively produce as well. Sir Lady Java was a staple of the Los Angeles nightclub scene in the ’50s and ’60s, sharing the stage with the likes of Sammy Davis Jr., Redd Foxx, Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, and James Brown. Lady Java was targeted by the LAPD who stripped her from her job as a performer due to Rule #9. She diligently push the issue that affected everyone until the law was lifted legally allowing freedom of gender expression for all.

Hailie has overcome many challenges presented to her as a transgender woman. She was crowned “Miss L.A. Pride” and “Queen U.S.A.” Sahar was honored with an invitation to speak on the HIV/AIDS epidemic at The Ronald Reagan International Trade Center for the 57th Presidential Advisory Council and continues to contribute to the East Los Angeles Women’s Center against domestic violence. Hailie has recently been featured in a “Beauty is what we bring to it” story for Allure magazine, where she revealed a facial birthmark. Hailie was featured in Playboy, where she talks about inclusion and the meaning of womanhood, and was featured in People Magazine’s Most Beautiful issue.

Hailie continues to push the narrative and boundaries as an actress, producer, and artist that can do it all and serves as a light for all communities everywhere.

Everybody.

Aminah Robinson

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Any work of art must be created by and for the human spirit— must express it, nourish it, enrich it. This work of art is grounded in the physical world but comes to full bloom in the world of the spirit.

In 1940, the year Brenda Lynn Robinson was born in Columbus, Ohio, she moved with her family into Poindexter Village, one of the nation’s first federally funded apartment complexes. Throughout her life, Robinson’s memories and research about Poindexter Village and Mt. Vernon Avenue, the lively commercial street nearby, were the focus of much of her work. From the time she was a little girl, Robinson knew she wanted to be an artist and her first studio was under her bed in the room she shared with her older sister Sue and her younger sister Sharron in the Poindexter apartment. Her father taught her how to draw and how to make books from homemade paper and “hogmawg,” a collection of mud, clay, twigs, leaves, lime, animal grease, and glue. Robinson used hogmawg in paintings and sculpture to add dimensionality and a highly expressive quality to her work. Her mother taught her spinning, weaving, needle and button work, which she incorporated in both two- and three-dimensional art. She began attending the Columbus Art School (now the Columbus College of Art and Design) on Saturdays while still in public school and then continued after she graduated from high school. Robinson combined the art traditions handed down to her from her family with the formal training she received in art school to develop an extraordinary, personal artistic vocabulary that included mixed-media sculpture, rag paintings, paintings on cloth, intricate drawings, woodcut prints, buttonbeaded books and dolls, and monumental tapestries she called “RagGonNons.”

Robinson’s wide-ranging subject matter embraced the local history of Black neighborhoods in Columbus, oral history gleaned from her elders, and research she conducted at the main library, where she worked during art school. The stories from her Uncle Alvin and Aunt Cornelia led her to connect her own story with those of ancestors who were kidnapped in Africa, forced to endure the Middle Passage, and enslaved in the American South. She celebrated those who survived and traced the journey of those who left the South and ultimately settled in cities such as Columbus. During the 1960s, Robinson was active in the Civil Rights movement and participated in the March on Washington. “I am Black as well as American—and my art as a whole must reflect that Blackness and all other influences around. In short, Black American Art is a fully American art…I do not ever want to stray from those very roots which gave birth to me…. Where do I go from here as a creative Black artist? To meet the needs of my people through work—that is my calling.” In the face of unmitigated racism and bigotry, she believed that telling the story of the African American past, present, and future in her art served to advance the struggle for equality and freedom. She worked on this massive story for six decades and referred to it as an all-encompassing “Symphonic Poem.” During the 1970s, Columbus woodcarver Elijah Pierce became an influential friend and mentor, who encouraged her to “stay on the path” and continue telling this story despite political upheaval and personal challenges.

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.
